THE provincial council has stepped up the promotion of the Costa Almeria as an ideal holiday destination to the Spanish market to ‘cushion the blow’ of the loss of international visitors. The Diputacion has now intensified the ‘Sin ir mas lejos… Almeria’ (Without going further… Almeria) campaign launched at the end of lockdown to reboot the provincial tourism sector through a focus on attracting visitors from elsewhere in the country. Promotional initiatives will see the Costa Almeria mentioned on toprating national and regional TV and radio programmes over the rest of summer and into autumn. There is also advertising online and on social media and publicity on the streets of major cities.

PROMOTION STEPPED UP
OBJECTIVE: The Almeria Council is aiming to attract more national tourism to make up for the loss of visitors from other countries. The Costa Almeria campaign is featured in digital outdoor information panels in strategic locations like Plaza de Castilla, Avenida America and Principe Pio in Madrid and on public transport systems, including Barcelona’s tram network and Mallorca capital Palma’s urban buses. The reinforced promo-
tional actions are all about “strengthening the province’s tourism businesses, which are indispensable for the provincial economy, finding potential new visitors and making the sector year-around,” explained Tourism deputy Fernando Gimenez. “Now more than ever the Diputacion has to be at the side of Alme-
ria’s tourism companies and professionals, to make it through these circumstances as much
as the health situation allows and cushion the blow of the loss of international visitor with an
increase in national tourism,” the deputy insisted. “We are confident that this reinforcement of the campaign will help us to find new potential visitors who want to discover all that the Costa Almeria offers the tourist.” The campaign is part of the Diputacion’s ‘Programa Promo’ to build up the image of Almeria as a holiday destination and to stimulate local trade through communication and promotional actions at local, regional, national and international level.

Shows cancelled ALMERIA City Council cancelled all the shows planned for this week due to the recent surge in Covid-19 cases in the province. A further 452 people tested positive for the virus just between Friday and Monday, pushing up the number of active cases to 2,457. In a statement released at the beginning of the week the council’s Culture department explained it was in permanent contact with the Andalucia regional government’s Health Delegation, describing the decision to suspend the events as “painful, but necessary.” The department stressed that council-organised events this summer have all been staged with strict health safety measures in place, including limited audience numbers, having all members

coming days. Events will be rescheduled when the pandemic situation “is more favourable,” the department statement added. Affected shows include children’s theatre, flamenco and performances by Almeria City Orchestra and by violinist Ara Malikian.

Essentials only VERA’S street market partially reopened on Saturday, two weeks after the council suspended it for at least a fortnight over concerns about outbreaks of Covid-19 in the province. Only stalls selling fruit, vegetables and other food products or basic essentials were allowed to set up at the Paseo Miguel de Cervantes market site. A statement from Vera’s conservative Partido Popular mayor Jose Carmelo Blanco last Thursday explained this was due to the “current health situation, there being numerous outbreaks in the Levante region of the province.” Authorisation for stalls selling other kinds of items will depend on how the pandemic situation evolves, the notifi-
cation said. Vera’s left leaning PSOE party criticised what it described as the PP’s ‘improvisation’ in its decisions over the market. The party claimed the authorisation for the market, but with a prohibition on some kinds of stalls, led to confusion and to ‘disagreeable incidents’ on Saturday morning. According to PSOE, several stallholders selling clothing and shoes tried to set up without authorisation, resulting in verbal confrontations with Local Police and the market traders being reported. PSOE accused the council of failing to give market sellers like these an explanation in advance and an expected forecast on when they will be able to return.

Safe destination image boost VERA’S image as a safe holiday destination has had a boost with the news that 11 local establishments have merited the regional government’s ‘Andalucia Segura’ distinction. Promoted by the Junta de Andalucia’s regional Tourism ministry, the stamp is “the only instrument which the sector has to demonstrate that it is following hygiene and safety measures and recommendations,” explained the territorial delegate for the department Jose Luis Delgado during a visit to Vera. The Covid-19 crisis has made safety “key for a sector as vital as tourism,” Delgado pointed out, as he dropped in to some of the businesses which have gained the stamp, accompanied by Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco, Tourism councillor Catiana Soriana Pinar and Destino Vera manager Pilar Guerra. “When we visit Vera we have the opportunity to enjoy beautiful, safe beaches, to eat in places which are a reference for our cuisine, and to rest in maximum category hotels which have
done all the necessary work so we can have the peace of mind of being in a safe space,” the territorial delegate added. He encouraged more of Vera businesses in the tourism sector to apply for the Andalucia Segura stamp and “gain that image of solidity, peace of mind and safety which we need to show to our visitors. “It is an added value and a true showcase, a demonstration of the excellence of the Almeria destination which contributes to consolidating confidence in our province.” Delgado also praised Vera’s active tourism sector for “making Almeria more attractive as a destination. “Every day in our province you can live an experience, and that’s all thanks to the work of the sector,” he said. “I want to thank you for your efforts in adopting measures and continuing to operate in this new normality, as you make the Levante region of Almeria a sports area tied to tourism and contribute to expanding and strengthening our offer for visitors.”

ALBOX businessman Glenn Unwin has been doing his bit to help those in need in his area. The Albox Insurance owner has made a generous charitable donation to the Albox Council Food Bank which supports struggling families. Glenn said he wanted to give something back to his local community. “I live in Albox and I knew the town hall was struggling to supply food parcels, so I thought we ought to make a contribution,” Glenn told the Euro Weekly News. After checking with the council what items they needed most he set off for a local supermarket and did a massive shop of household staples to help keep families in a vulnerable situation going. “We should all stick together,” Glenn stressed.

Bridge plans HUERCAL-OVERA Council wants a major bridge project it says will eliminate an accident black spot to be included in provincial government plans. The local authority has asked the Diputacion de Almeria to include the project for works on the San Isidro bridge, access to the municipality and 340 highway area in the 2020/2023 four-year plan, with an initial investment of €1 million. Huercal-Overa mayor Domingo Fernandez said the project is something which has long been demanded by local residents. He pointed out that the process for getting the works off the ground began back in 2012 and has continued in successive years. Fernandez said the administration had even presented an appeal to the Andalucia Ombudsman at one stage over the “paralysis of the procedures, but had never given up.” Through the provincial plans “we are going to make a reality and carry

Strict stance on self-isolation ADRA Council has decided to step up Local Police checks on people who are self-isolating after testing positive for Covid-19 or who are being monitored. Mayor Manuel Cortes met with Local Police chief Trinidad Perez last week to discuss the importance of what the council described as “a more specific control” to ensure people are abiding by the health regulations and avoiding possibly spreading the virus.
Cortes explained the idea is for officers to work in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucia “to supervise compliance with the obligatory isolation measures.” The mayor also made it very clear the council will be “strict in the application of sanctions for non-compliance with confinement, the health of the rest of residents is at stake”, he stressed. Cortes also put a general appeal to the public for “individual responsibility”
and to take every precaution at a time when the number of new cases of Covid-19 have been increasing by the day in Almeria Province. “This crisis requires a collective response and to come through this it is essential to have the effort of all Adra residents”, he commented. Local Police are also working with the Guardia Civil and Civil Protection to check that people and businesses are following the rules, particularly in areas like beaches and leisure zones.

Storm ready roads CARBONERAS Council has completed works on the Llano de Don Antonio and cemetery roads, a project with funds from the regional government for repairing damage from last autumn’s violent storms. The local authority has repaired and resurfaced nearly a kilometre of country lane in total, also ensuring there is sufficient drainage to prevent future damage from torrential downpours. Carboneras mayor Jose Luis Amerigo and Public Works councillor Pedro Lopez went to take a look this week at the result of what the council said were works which local residents had been demanding for some time. Lopez underlined the importance of projects of this kind on rural roads which have a significant amount of traffic and which in the case of the Llano de Don Antonio road provide access to the most populated outlying district of the municipality. The council has also carried out improvements to several streets in Carboneras town centre which were in a poor state of repair. Plans are now in the pipeline for resurfacing country lanes in the Los Belmonte and Los Alarcones areas and on further streets in the town.

Skilful moves
TRICKY: The rescue required “a very complicated manoeuvre,” the Guardia reported. SKILFUL moves by a Guardia Civil rescue boat saved a drifting boat from smashing into a stone breakwater at Garrucha port. Officers on board the A-08 Rio Almanzora were on their way back to the port when they noticed the anchor of a leisure craft losing its grip due to the 50-kilometre an hour winds and the 1.5-metre high waves, which were thrusting the boat ever closer to the breakwater. They lowered the rescue dinghy and with what the Guardia described as a “very complicated manoeuvre,” and with great skill on the part of the skipper, managed to get close enough to attach a towline to affix a hook. An officer meanwhile jumped on board the boat to calm down the four crew members and give them life jackets. Finally the Guardia managed to raise up the anchor chain and refloat the boat, preventing it from sinking, and subsequently tow it to a jetty at Garrucha’s marina. No-one on board the boat was injured during the incident.

A RURAL employment plan managed by the Almeria provincial council has double benefits for the Nacimiento area of the province. The €616,000 investment in Abla, Abrucena and Nacimiento under the PFEA rural employment initiative is generating nearly 6,000 working days and means the modernisation of public infrastructure and services. PFEA Diputacion de Almeria deputy Matilde Diaz visited the three municipalities accompanied by the mayors of each to
see how the works were going and to chat to the people employed under the plan. Diaz maintained the PFEA plays a vital role in achieving two of the provincial administration’s main objectives. One is addressing the issue of depopulation in small municipalities, especially in inland Almeria. The second is strengthening equal opportunities for the province’s population. “The PFEA is essential for the creation and consolidation of job places in the municipalities with
the smallest populations, even more so in the context of the present crisis,” she affirmed. “The PFEA represents an important investment in our villages which generates wealth, employment and improves the services which councils provide for their residents,” Diaz added. The works being carried out in Abla, Abrucena and Nacimiento include street resurfacing, installing new water and waste water pipes, improvements to a municipal plant nursery, and garden maintenance.

The localities, all in the Levante, north and Los Velez region, each presented projects to the Junta’s Employment Territorial Delegation, with a global request for assistance adding up to nearly €2.5 million. Nijar will receive the biggest subsidy, at just short of €540,000, which will be used to employ 60 people for improvements to urban services and to fund an employability support programme for the beneficiaries of the funding. Storm repair cash THE Spanish government has agreed a €1.8 million handout to Almeria to help ease the impact of the violent storms which battered the province in September. The Finance Ministry is allocating payments from the European Union Solidarity Fund to 25 municipalities in all. The financial aid is aimed at covering council costs on storm damage repairs to services and infrastructure like power, water, sewage, telecommunications, health and education. The ministry has already paid out nearly €90,000 in subsidies to 13 councils which put in requests for assistance under a royal decree, among
them Vera, Bedar and Lubrin. Another five - Seron, Arboleas, Antas, Sierro and Sorbas - are due to receive payments totalling nearly €322,000 in all imminently. A further €1.4 million in assistance has been approved and is in the process of being paid out. Of this amount, more than €1.2 million is destined for Nijar, the Almeria municipality worst hit by last autumn’s extreme weather. Also set to receive financial aid are Velez-Blanco, Macael, Chirivel, Tabernas, Taberno, Cantoria, Pulpi, Los Gallardos, Bacares, Rioja and Olula del Rio.
PREVIOUS PROGRAMMES: Previous initiatives aimed at promoting employment in Huercal-Overa have proved popular, the council said. JOB development is a council priority, the Huerca-Overa administration says. For this reason the local authority has allocated nearly €300,000 to employment programmes and initiatives. Economic Promotion councillor Monica Navarro explained the budget allocation includes subsidies for self-employed just getting going on their business activities, job training in the workplace for young people, and assistance to companies which had to shut down or which have been negatively affected by the Covid-19 crisis. A further section of the budget sees more than €400,000 allotted to supporting, promoting and boosting local trade
“with the objective of helping the more than 400 families in our municipality which make a living from shops and small and medium-sized businesses,” Navarro pointed out. The overall goal is to “contribute to the development of the local economy, doing away with barriers to the process of company creation, at the same time as offering this first contact with the workplace to young people and supporting and promoting trade and local businesses with support for reactivation and modernisation,” the councillor said. The council said to date it has awarded 235 lots of financial assistance under its support programme for companies affected by the pandemic.

Questioning Fundamental Rights Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Magistrate Alfonso Villagómez Cebrián, annulled Madrid’s Autonomous Government’s ban on smoking last week; in a democratic country and with a legal system that protects the people’s fundamental rights and freedom, we should all consider the necessity and legality of the actions of the public authorities when they take our freedoms away. Every day we come across new regulations that tell us how we have to act, what we can do and what not, with whom we can and cannot meet, where we can go and where not. Moreover, we must not forget that all these regulations affect rights and freedoms protected by the Spanish Constitution, which can only be limited in a situation of a State of Exception, as regulated by the constitutional text itself. It all started with the lockdown decree last March which prevented us from free movement and assembly knowing that in a State of Alarm these rights and freedoms can’t be touched, 40 million Spanish residents accepted the situation due to fear of this pandemic which has rocked most of the world. After the State of Alarm finished, the Autonomous Regions were given back their power. However, they have regulated numerous aspects of our daily life through legal orders that are null and void, since they are contrary to the Government’s Royal Decree-Law. This Royal Decree-Law, known as the ‘New Normal’ that imposes several health and safety rules (some of them constitutionally questionable) have to be controlled and imposed by the Autonomous Administrations; for example, wearing a face mask. The Autonomous Communities have not limited themselves to imposing the Royal Decree-Law, but have in turn regulated a stricter version, approving regulations that are therefore illegal. In addition, this situation produces legal uncertainty which is also constitutionally unacceptable. And in the middle of all this chaos are the members of the Security Forces, obeying

On the one hand, all Spanish civil servants are obliged to obey when carrying out their duties, but on the other hand, they are also obliged to report illegal practices in their jobs when they become aware of them. Therefore, we should ask ourselves, what should the police do? Denounce people or denounce their superiors? Meanwhile, the government has had to acknowledge that there has never been a committee of experts that supposedly advised on the decision-making of the de-escalation and on the preparation of the aforementioned Royal Decree-Law of the New Normal. The damage which has been made by these clearly political decisions has taken the hotel and bar businesses to a dead zone where no help has been offered more than the original furlough. All this opens up many questions, such as, why is the government going down this road? Are our politicians uneducated with regard to health and economic issues? All these questions will have to be answered sooner or later. Bearing in mind that politicians have never been objective thinkers, we should not hesitate to question them regarding how they legislate our fundamental rights and freedoms.

What you need to know about Spanish residence and Brexit UK nationals who want to live in Spain and access healthcare and other benefits from 2021 must secure Spanish residence before the Brexit transition period ends on 31 December 2020. Those who successfully applied for Spanish residence before July 2020 received the Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión – widely known as the ‘green card’. Since 6 July 2020, the biometric foreigners' ID card, Tarjeta de Identidad del Extranjero (TIE) is issued instead. Either of these documents demonstrates legal residence in Spain, enabling you and your direct family to live here and enjoy uninterrupted citizens’ rights post-Brexit. Holders of a green card can choose to exchange it for the new TIE – while this is not obligatory, the new format (ID card with photograph) could be more practical and explicitly states your access to citizens’

OPERATION: Guardia Civil tracked down and cuffed the five suspects following an eightmonth investigation. GUARDIA CIVIL have made five arrests for a brutal attack on a Nijar taxi driver, two of the detainees also facing charges for sexually assaulting a female passenger. The detentions follow an eight-month investigation to track down those responsible for the violent incident last December, ending with
‘Operation Autotax.’ The Guardia’s initial reconstruction of events established that the attackers had followed a ‘pirate’ taxi to a district of Nijar. There they set upon the driver, leaving him with significant injuries, before stealing his vehicle. Before the passenger could get to her home, two of the individuals threatened her with a
knife and sexually assaulted her, then made off. According to the Guardia the aggressors went to some lengths to avoid being found by law enforcement: they all moved away from Almeria Province and ‘adopted major security measures.’ Ultimately surveillance and monitoring produced results and they were all located and cuffed.

It is likely, for example, that non-Spanish residents with a holiday home in Spain, for example, may only be permitted to spend a limited time there each year without a visa/permit. Next steps to lock in guaranteed rights for Spain Essentially, if you want to secure uninterrupted freedom of movement and associated rights in Spain from 1 January 2021, you need to: • hold current proof of residence (green card, TIE or other residence document) before 31 December; and • continue to meet the conditions of Spanish residence, such as spending 183 days a year in Spain. If you are not yet registered here but intend to become Spanish resident, make an appointment to obtain the new TIE as soon as possible. Although the whole process can take some months, once your application is submitted, you
will receive a receipt from the Spanish immigration authorities which will be valid to prove your residence and rights under the Withdrawal Agreement. Note that in becoming legally resident, you will very likely also be deemed tax resident and liable for Spanish taxation on a worldwide basis, so it is important to get your tax planning in order. CARBONERAS Council has put out a video on social media aimed at raising awareness among youngsters about doing their bit in the fight against Covid-19. The video features young
locals, among them students, musicians, sportspeople and bar and restaurant staff, with the message “we know how to be responsible too,” and appealing to others their
age to respect measures designed to prevent the spread of the virus. “We know now is the time to stick to small groups, to enjoy ourselves with caution,” says one. “It’s the time to look out for our family and for our neighbours,” says another, and “it’s time to look after ourselves,” adds a young man. The video reminds viewers to wear face masks and wash hands. “We do it, but we all have to do it. Because we can only beat this virus together,” warns a group of young female handball players. The video also features Carboneras mayor Jose Luis Amerigo Fernandez. He says while the council is “dealing with Covid19 with all the means within its reach, the collaboration of everyone is essential, and especially of the youngest.”

COMMITMENT: The Tourism and Beaches councillor said the council is continuously improving accessibility on municipal beaches. NEW ‘flexi-walkways’ are making it easier for beach-goers in Roquetas de Mar to enjoy a dip in the Mediterranean. The local council’s Tourism and Beaches department has acquired 100 metres of the flexible walkways. Made from recycled plastic which does not deteriorate in the sea, they are rolled out to extend to the shoreline from six shaded zones on Roquetas’ beaches, which have been set up for people with mobility problems. These shaded zones on the Aguadulce, La Romanilla, La Bajadilla,
La Urbanizacion, Las Salinas and Serena beaches are in turn connected to the seafront promenade by wooden walkways. Tourism and Beaches councillor Francisco Barrionuevo said the new walkway acquisition reflects the council’s commitment to “continue reinforcing accessibility on its beaches” and to equip them with all the necessary facilities “so they remain a reference point.” He pointed out that this year the local authority has also equipped the shaded zones with 10 amphibious wheelchairs.

MORE CONTROLS: Police have intensified inspections and checks on restaurants, shops and the most crowded areas of the cities. POLICE are taking a harder line on Covid-19 prevention rule-breakers in the Costa Almeria capital. The city’s anti-Covid police operation saw officers issue some 700 reports mid-month compared with the 120 registered in the last fortnight of July and the first week of August. Police took action against more than 600 people for failing to wear a face mask in public. They also reported establishments for not complying with social distancing rules between tables on bar and restaurant terraces or for not respecting set maximum capacities. Officers issued sanctions against 11 people
for so-called ‘botellones’, or gatherings in public places to drink and party. On top of that, they reported six people for smoking on the street or on a bar or restaurant terrace, something which has been prohibited in Andalucia since the beginning of last week under new restrictions aimed at halting a surge in the number of people testing positive for the virus. Almeria City Public Safety councillor Maria del Mar explained the anti-Covid operation meant more inspections and checks on wining and dining establishments, shops and leisure outlets, as well as on the most crowded areas. The aim, she said, is to
“intensify the compulsory use of the face mask and social distancing, as well as all the health authorities’ recommendations in order to reduce the rate of coronavirus infections.” The councillor highlighted the awareness-raising side of the operation, with a campaign to promote public health on the street in collaboration with Civil Protection personnel. She said getting the message across about the importance of respecting the health safety regulations is vital, as is coordination between the public administrations and the security forces, to get the new infection rate down and to stop the virus from spreading.
Drug delivery frustrated THREE people are under arrest after a joint Guardia Civil and Customs Agency operation frustrated an illegal delivery of 1.4 tonnes of hashish on a Costa de Almeria beach. The operation was launched after a Customs Agency aircraft picked up on a semi-rigid boat in the Alboran Sea heading for the provincial coastline, leading to the coordinated surveillance of the craft. When it reached the shore at the Guardia Viejas beach in El Ejido, offi-
cers keeping a close eye on the location watched as a number of individuals jumped off and began loading bundles of the drug onto a waiting lorry. That was when law enforcement stepped in. Officers seized 47 bundles of hash, 37 from the lorry and 10 dropped off onto the beach. They also seized 30 canisters of petrol which the Guardia said had been lined up to load onto the boat, but which had made a high-speed escape.

Earmarked for improvements EIGHT well-used rural roads in Roquetas de Mar are earmarked for improvements under a plan with more than €500,000 of Almeria provincial council funding. Unveiling the details, Roquetas councillor Rocio Sanchez explained the roads in question are in various different districts of the municipality, including El Solanillo and Aguadulce, and have been selected for upgrades on the basis of their importance for both the agricultural sector and for residents. “As you can see, these are strategic roads, most of which not only give access to farms, but which are used as a connection between residential areas”, Sanchez commented. She also underlined the “importance of col-
laboration between institutions” on projects of this kind. “Thanks to the Diputacion de Almeria’s Road Plan, Roquetas de Mar is going to receive an important investment which will
mean better accessibility, communication and safety on rural lanes”, she affirmed. The improvements will include cleaning out and creating ditches and rainfall drainage and resurfacing.

CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council has been doing its homework on ensuring a safe return to municipal classrooms at the start of the new school year in September. The local authority reported it has now set out plans for the measures which need to be implemented. The administration said it will carry out reinforced and continuous cleaning and disinfections in schools on school days, having already started on cleaning and disinfections efforts in classrooms. Meanwhile the Education and Public Safety councillors, Ana Maria Castro and Maria del Haro, are working with the heads of the municipal schools on establishing entrances and exits and signposting at each centre. Several weeks back the Cuevas mayor Antonio Fernandez and the Educa-
tion councillor met with the school heads and the director of the local health centre to discuss any concerns and needs. The council said all those at the meeting expressed their commitment to community education and to a return to school marked by the Covid19 pandemic, making it clear they would coordinate their actions. A statement from the Cuevas administration also revealed it has sent a letter to the Junta de Andalucia’s Education delegation calling for the regional government to establish clear measures and viable protocols, as well as resources, for the safe return of pupils. A further request is for the Junta’s backing for the ‘extraordinary expense’ which the council’s actions on helping schools ‘in the face of an unprecedented start to a term’ will mean for the municipal coffers.

Possible takeover bid SHARES in Britain’s largest internet sup plier BT have been dropping sharply over the past months even though the company still continues to make signifi cant profits and has a huge annual turnover. It didn’t help that in line with many other companies around Europe it sus pended its dividend but with a reduc tion of value close to 40 per cent in the last year, BT management fear that it is likely to attract a predatory takeover. Sky News reported that BT has con tacted American Investment Bank Gold
man Sachs asking that it should prepare a defence strategy in the event that a takeover bid is launched. Should a takeover actually be fact rather than fiction, it could be either a private equity firm or Deutsche Telecom AG which has shown interest in the British corporation for several years but it does come with baggage. Like other previously government owned organisations, when privatised in 1984, there were a number of regula tion put in place by the then govern ment which are still extant and a new

owner could well find itself at odds with those regulations which make the group responsible to the UK government as well as its shareholders. There’s also the matter of coping with superfast broadband and the introduc tion of 5G which will require greater in put from British companies now that Chinese Group Huawei Technologies will have a far reduced involvement. Add to this, a welldocumented pen sion shortfall and any takeover could be problematic although in the longrun, the value of BT is bound to go up.

You can divide your 90 days as you wish. At the end of the 180day pe riod, you must leave Spain for at least 90 days. So I am afraid that your plan will not work.

FOR the first time since 1960, the UK government’s debt of just over £2 (€2.2) trillion is greater than Gross Domestic Product (GDP) according to the Office for National Statis tics (ONS). Debt had been creeping up during the latter part of 2019, but the lockdown and pandemic has hit Britain bad ly and the fact is that for the past four months spending has exceeded tax income. Eat Out scheme. Analysts forecast that once these two significant amounts are paid, the need to borrow will drop, especial ly as company VAT payments will be due and the Furlough scheme will finish. Britain will not benefit in the way that Italy and Spain have from the financial sup port from the European Union and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak will have to be creatively cau tious in his autumn budget and hope that significant trade deals following final Brexit divorce are just around the corner.

Educational skullduggery
THE British government’s final decision to allow teachers to decide student’s exam results was not only ridiculous, but positively wreaked of a hasty and desperate endeavour to resolve a problem that they could have simply done without. After all, when you are in debt to the tune of two trillion pounds and gripped by a pandemic bringing the country to its knees, having a bunch of youngsters crying in their cornflakes and marching on Downing Street because they consider they should have received higher than an F in mathematics, was just about the last thing they needed. Appeasing the teachers, pupils and public in one fell swoop was actually a stroke of genius, they simply wanted the problem to go away - and it has. Unfortunately, because of the method used to obtain their grades and through no fault of their own, in years to come the classes of 2020 will be viewed on with suspicion by just about everyone, universities and future employers alike trying to have us believe that teachers would be either competent, unbiased or impartial enough to deliver up fair and just results in these ex-

They have always had their favourites, or students they dislike and even their occasional attraction to pupils, (who can often manipulate ‘Sir’ or ‘Miss’ with the guile of those far beyond their years!). You can’t tell me that a teacher, who is
aware that a better result for young Jimmy who is not the brightest, but, is ‘such a nice lad’ and has ‘tried very hard,’ doesn’t merit perhaps just a little tweak in the marking department? Well of course it would. Couple that with the fact that schools are judged by their overall success rate and you have the perfect storm for educational skullduggery. Is it any wonder the
diddum’s experienced one of the highest pass rates in history? No, I’m afraid this is merely one more step in the lowering of British education standards, which has been slowly eroding for years. I’m actually pretty convinced that the leftie luvvies will adore this method of selection. No exams, no stress and if they had their way, no losers. I predict a whole glut of university graduates stacking the shelves of Sainsbury’s in the dumbed down years to come. You truly do have to feel sorry for poor old Boris. He’s found himself at the head of a government experiencing the worst series of crisis in living memory. Become a new dad. Been at death’s door with the Covid virus and when he tries to slip away into the British countryside for a brief respite, has an irate farmer chase him off the land where he pitches his tent! Absolutely besotted
FOLLOWING on from our previous article about losing our dog Chalkie, we found ourselves trying to adjust to a life without him and in all honesty, it was a daily struggle. We missed him not being there to greet us, his cuddles and the fact he was always by our side, without question. As days and weeks passed, we sat down as a family several times to talk about how the massive hole he left behind was prominent, and even more so with the current climate, and the new normal, how it wasn’t going away and was there even a possibility of us moving on without it ever being filled again. It was also very heartbreaking to see all the animals in the kennels without loving homes, but we were so happy when we were able to rescue and home two adorable puppies who I immediately named Han Solo and Chewbacca (I am a massive Star Wars fan ha ha). They are turning three months old and just about to go for their second batch of inoculations. The force is strong with them, they are playful, full of energy and have settled right in as family members. We are absolutely besotted.

Good luck with that one Germany... MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LOVE dogs - they are just the best pets in the world. They just want to be your best friend and are very loyal. My ambition is to be half the man my dog thinks I am. The greeting when you return home is ‘Wow you came back. Thank you!!’ So you will understand that when I read that North Korea’s leader has reportedly ordered his people to hand over their pet dogs so they can be turned into meat for restaurants absolutely made me feel sick and totally outraged. It’s bad enough they eat dogs in the first place, but to come round your house and remove your beloved pet is just not even something I want to think about. There was another doggy story that caught my eye this week and initially I thought it was crazy but after looking at it closer it isn’t. The story was on the Mail online which does not seem to have the ability to report anything truthfully which
is infuriating. Their headline was that in Germany owners had to walk their dogs two hours a day and would get prosecuted if they didn’t. After looking into it it’s not quite as bad but still difficult to understand how they could police it. But what they are saying is dogs aren’t cuddly toys. They also have their own needs, which need to be taken into account. Under the new rules it will no longer be legal for Germany’s 9.4 million dogs to be left alone at home for long periods. Keeping dogs tethered or on a lead for a significant amount of time could also be banned, which is absolutely correct. What they don’t seem to have taken into consideration is that not all dogs are the same. My dog is 14 years old. He couldn’t walk two hours a day. He likes to go out for two walks a day, get a bit of exercise, do what he has to do and come home. He’s emptied again at night before we close for the day. Also you have to take into consideration the size and breed. A tiny Chihuahua doesn’t need the same exercise as a Labrador. Anyway good luck with that one Germany. Maybe whilst timing dogs’ walks you can check whether everyone has their face masks on and are socially distancing at the same time!

WE’VE all put on weight over lockdown. Hold the front page! Well, that’s according to Boris who’s now busily urging lardy Brits to lose weight to reduce the risk of succumbing to Covid-19. (Err, how much weight have YOU lost, Boris?). And as for Jamie Oliver, he’s tried for years to reduce obesity in school kids with mixed results. Maybe Jamie should turn his attention to adults too, with the news that one UK c h u rc h p l a n s t o r i p o u t church pews so ‘fat folk’ can walk down the aisle ... “Here comes the bride, 40 inches wide,” is the headline in one paper describing a Dorset church’s plans to remove some of its pews because the aisle is too narrow for obese couples to walk down. According to its Parochial Church Council: “We have had occasions at wed-

dings where the couple have been too large to be able to walk side by side down the aisle.” But isn’t this simply evolution in action? No longer does the bride need to slim to fit the dress, but now she needs to slim to fit the church. What next, are they going to widen the doors, have a snack break half-way through the service or add a pizza oven and a deep fat fryer in case anybody gets a bit peckish if the sermon drags on? Not forgetting to have the floor reinforced. Absolutely ridiculous! Clearly time not to change the church but the people wanting to get married there! In this time of Covid and the proven link with obesity, a prewedding diet would seem to be in order. The answer is to lose weight, not wreck the
church. But let him who is without sin cast the first scone. (Sorry!) At this point I should declare an interest. My 90-yearold neighbour told me that the doctor had said he must lose weight and cut down on his daily four cans of beer. They call me Sir Lunchalot GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AMIDST the never-ending rule changes of the new normal, one thing remains constant - each day, lunch is something of an occasion. Having always preferred to lunch, rather than dinner, I try to find restaurants in Marbella to fulfil my desire for great food, and stylish settings. Trust me, it’s not as easy as it should be. Living directly on the beach, one would expect simple, yet fantastic seafood and local cuisine. However, it seems that the restaurateurs of the area prefer to mix things up, with an awful lot of Asian fusion. Yes, I’m confused too. If you’re fortunate to live in Andalucia, there are so many amazing culinary possibilities. While dining out should be something to look forward to, I find it something of a chore, as I try to think of where to go. First World
problems for sure, but still, problems are problems. That changed this week, as I stumbled upon my new favourite place. Primeria Selection, in Marbella town is possibly the most stylish and passionate of all. Stylish, as it exudes simple elegance. Passionate, as the owners Luis and Encarna Galán are knowledgeable and interested in every aspect. I met a friend on an impossibly hot Wednesday afternoon, when the only thing to calm the heat was chilled Veuve Clicquot, and an ocean of San Pellegrino. We shared some burrata and then asked what else was on offer. I was told that in the evening the menu lists daily specials. One thing I’ve noticed a lot in Marbella - despite the economic downturn and lack of custom, most places are reluctant to bend the rules, remaining trapped in opening times that simply no longer apply. If a customer wishes to go off piste, and let’s say, order from the evening menu at lunch time, why not? They have money, and you have what they want. I believe they call it ‘good business.’

Anyhow, that’s exactly what happened. When I asked what time the exciting evening menu begins, ever smiling, and super well-informed Encarna replied, “right now, if you like!” Suddenly our lunch became an occasion and naturally so did our tab. Amazingly fresh prawn tortilla with black truffle. Potato salad with cod tartare. A locally sourced cheese plate. A well-priced and delicious Rioja. Sorry if I’m making you hungry. This couple are passionate about every aspect of their business, and more so, about promoting seriously good Spanish produce. That evening, I thought of how well they ran their chic eatery. Hands on and hard work - I know it’s hard work, as I used to be involved in a similar restaurant in Dublin. That’s the thing about whatever you choose to do - without a true passion, there’s no point. I was recently interviewed for an English magazine, about my lifestyle, and life in general. When asked why I live in Spain, I replied, because I am fortunate. Yes, there are many things about Marbella that surprise me. But a life without surprise, well, where’s the fun in that?

I’M guessing that many of you would love nothing more than to have complete control of your lives? For me, this was an everyday occurrence. However, I never actually understood how much this affected my state of well-being. Trying to control the outcome of every aspect of my life, increased my anxiety and lead me to question my own natural ability to just be me! There were things I was trying to control that were actually, completely out of my control. This then lead to frustration, anger and resentment. By concentrating on controlling everything outside of me, I lost my authentic self. I lost my inner calm and peace, replacing it with uncertainty. I needed to know why I felt the need to control everything in my life, and why it was so impor-

Quote - Before you take control of your life you first must understand what “taking control” means. tant to me. I had to revisit my past to find the answer. I picked up my journal, and wrote the title ‘Why Do I Need To Be In Control?’ After frantically writing, I had dwindled it down to two main reasons... FEAR and EGO. My ego was telling me that if I didn’t control my personal and business life, I would fail! I had to be perfect in every way possible to avoid said failure and to also avoid the judgement of others. If I had control, I would only achieve success. I felt that I had to control my work, my relationship, who I allowed around me because then, there was no way I could get hurt! The problem was, I was the one that was causing the hurt. Not only to myself but
everyone around me. So How Do You Let Go Of The Need To Control? Here are three of the top tips that taught me how to be less of a control freak Learn to Just Be You cannot control anything that is outside of you. You can only control the emotions that you attach to it. Be at peace with yourself. Take anything between five and 30 minutes per day to ‘Just Be.’ Find a quiet spot, take in your surroundings and enjoy the moment. Don’t pressurise yourself to feel or do anything, just enjoy whatever comes to you at that moment and breath. Show gratitude for what you have, here and now. Let go of the outcome and appreciate the calmness within you.
Write a List Write a list of the things that you CAN control. By physically writing the list of what you can control, you can remove the need to control what is outside of you. My list consists of the following, My mental well-being - I can control my mental state and wellbeing by doing what makes my soul happy. For me, this includes, reading a book, meditation and journalling. As a believer of the law of attraction, I understand we all work on electrical frequencies. By ensuring I am on a high-frequency level, and being at peace with myself, I will attract more of the same back to me. My appearance - I can control how I want to look. If I wish to wear make-up, I can. If I wish to
just kick back in my favourite PJs, with my hair scrunched, on the top of my head, I can. Let Go of the What Ifs What if it goes wrong? What if I make a fool of myself? What if I fail. One vlogger has taken things too far and caused quite the stir amongst skin specialists, using sunscreen to create a long-lasting contoured effect. According to dermatologists, the practice is inherently flawed and dangerous to the skin. Mona Gohara, MD an associate professor of dermatology at Yale stated: “You will leave your skin with an uneven pigment that can take months or years to go away.�

and their waist sizes. A healthy, balanced diet, with regular exercise, is the key to a healthy life. But we need to live a happy life too.

DEAR Euro Weekly, I live in a particularly Spanish neighbourhood in Fuengirola and there are a couple of Spanish bars owned by the same people that are situated next to each other. Every single night the bars are ram-packed, sure they serve a little tapas to go with the drinks, but I am talking no social distancing, no masks, absolutely no time for chairs or tables to be wiped down and disinfected. It’s bedlam. The police pass this area regularly as it is near the police station and a main road, but I have never seen them stop and do any kind of enforcement or checks. Are we back to us against them again? Surely it should be one rule for everyone if we ever want rid of this horrible virus?

At the time, Spain’s PM Pedro Sánchez said visitors would be safer from the virus in Spain than in the UK, and he hoped Britain would think again. However, the UK government have not changed their mind and an official spokesperson for BoJo even warned that ‘no travel is risk-free during this pandemic.’ Now, the UK government has said anyone travelling from France and the Netherlands will have to quarantine, which again caused a mass exodus among those holidaying in these destinations. It was reported that the latest measure was put into place as new Covid-19 infections grew across Europe and France, in particular, reported a large increase in infections in the past week. Nissan Juke Tekna + DO you like Marmite? Your answer may determine whether you a p p ro v e o f N i s s a n ’s Juke, that when it was launched divided opinion and there was no middle ground. Rather like a certain wellknown food spread. Launched in 2010 this small SUV-like hatchback polarised opinion but certainly didn’t dent sales as it appealed to those looking for something that lacked the anonymity of most euro boxes. In its latest guise, the Juke has lost a little of its quirkiness but probably increased its appeal. While it retains the individuality there are new, neat styling touches that will appeal to a broader set of buyers. Spaceship style front lights, dramatic LEDs and a sweeping grille give the Juke a presence lacking in more mainstream fare in this sector. Prices start from €19,738 (£17,860) for the lead in
ROAD TEST by Mark Slack model and there are six trim levels in total with prices topping out at €27,032 (£24,460). Standard fare includes such items as DAB radio, Bluetooth, cruise control, powered door mirrors, air conditioning and high beam assist for the headlights. It is a very comprehensive starter list of standard equipment. The single engine option for all versions is a threecylinder, turbocharged, one-litre petrol unit with either manual or dual clutch automatic gears. It’s a super engine and whilst not unduly fast proves fun to drive. My Tekna + model test car sits just one below the top line version and came in automatic form which utilises twin clutches, a method popular on many cars nowadays. It’s not perfect and often feels jerky, but in Nis-
san’s incarnation it proves pretty nifty and useable. Standard fare is good with an absolute plethora of kit on this model and I really couldn’t imagine anything else you would need on a car. Priced at €28,578 (£25,860) and resplendent in two tone grey and ‘Fuji Sunset Red’ the interior proved even more vibrant with ‘energy orange’ highlights. Sounds awful but it really did work. With a modest 11.1 seconds to 100 kmh (62 mph) and a top speed of 180 kmh (112mph) it’s no sports car but feels peppy and good fun on the road. Combined fuel consumption is okay, but not great, at 44.1 mpg, but that’s about the only downside. It’s an adventurous car and whether you’re young, old or even in-between, I can imagine those wanting something a bit different, a head turner (although not always from an admiring crowd) will love the Juke.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were better in the first half, but it was Kingsley Coman, who started his career at PSG, that came through with a 59th-minute header at the far post from Joshua Kimmich’s cross that left the French giants still searching for that elusive Champions League triumph. It was certainly a night of joy for Bayern coach Hansi Flick, who added the Champions League to the Bundesliga after initially taking over as interim coach from sacked Niko Kovac in November. In contrast, it was a night of bitter disappointment for PSG’s two attacking superstars, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, who failed to produce their best and found themselves frustrated by the Bayern keeper and man of the match, Manuel
champions of Europe once more, becoming the first team to win the trophy by winning every Champions League game in a single campaign. Bayern closed the perfect Champions League with 11 victories in 11 games, the only shame was that the match had to be played to a virtually empty stadium in Lisbon, Portugal due to coronavirus restrictions.
