THE association ‘Héroes Hasta la Médula’ was created in 2016, by a group of people who met at the Paediatric Oncohematology of Granada, while treating their children for leukaemia. Over time, more families joined the project to help promote different actions against childhood cancer and highlight the need for bone marrow donation. This summer they have developed different sporting challenges. The next one is to be Médula Swimming, where those who have joined the cause will complete a journey from Maro to Fuengirola over 86 kilometres in eight stages, some of them 12 kilometres apart. On September 6, the swimmers will leave Maro beach at 8.30am to-

A MAN in Nerja seems to have the answer to worry-free social distancing at the beach. He created his own ‘little zone’ to keep people away. The new normality in Spain requires 1.5 metres social distancing and people are trying their best to follow these rules. However, when going to the beach these rules can sometimes prove difficult to maintain, especially during busy summer days. To date, more than 15 per cent of these patients cannot find a suitable compatible donor and the number of donors is increasing in Spain at a rate of about 250 new donors/year.” The aim of the association is precisely to help this number of donors increase considerably. They also assure that all the money raised in their challenges will go to a research programme on childhood leukaemia resulting from an agreement with the University of Granada.

SUPERSTAR: Message of hope to those who are struggling with the illness. HOLLYWOOD actor and Malaga resident Antonio Banderas has announced that he has already recovered from Covid-19. The superstar took to Twitter on Tuesday, August 25, to let his fans know and give hope to those who are already struggling with the illness. “After 21 days of disciplinary confinement, I can say now that today I overcame the Covid19 infection. I am cured. My thoughts go to those who weren’t as fortunate as me, and to those who suffered more than I did. I also wish strength to the ones who are in the middle of the fight,” Banderas wrote in a post that included a mock-up of him kicking shapes of the virus. The ‘Puss in Boots’ and ‘Zorro’ legend announced on this same social network on August 10 that he had tested positive for Covid-19, forcing him to celebrate his 60th birthday in quarantine. At the time, he noted that he was “relatively well, just a little more tired than usual” and hoped to recover quickly as he has done. Throughout these three weeks, in addition to “reading, writing or resting” as he stated he would, he has been active on social networks publishing images of sunrises in Malaga and showing his “pride” for his daughter Stella del Carmen’s appearance on the cover of Glamour magazine.

Guardian Angel FRAN SOLER a ‘guardian angel’ had to jump into the sea to rescue people on two separate occasions over the course of 10 days, as they were on the brink of drowning in the sea off Rincón de la Victoria. The ex-military man said of the first incident, “It was Sunday morning, and there weren’t many people on the Torre del Benagalbón beach, as soon as I got there, I saw a person about 50 metres from the shore, and a woman was screaming because there was a man in danger at sea.” Soler continued “I didn’t hesitate, I have knowledge of resuscitation due to my military training, and although the man was heavy, I managed to get him out

with effort and I began CPR, until the Guardia Civil and ambulance arrived. Days later “the man found me, his name is Jorge, he’s from La Cala del Moral, and he thanked me.” On the next occasion, which took place around five in the afternoon, “I was telling Jorge’s story when curiously again I see a woman calling for help, this time it was not a heart attack, but that she had problems with her legs, she was paralysed, nervous and I managed to take her to the shore, where she was able to calm down and recover from the shock.” If you are in danger on the beach of Torre de Benagalbón, you better hope Juan Francisco Soler is nearby.
LUCKY DESTINATION THE mayor of Torrox, Óscar Medina, on Tuesday, August 25, presided over the official reception for the Cordoba CF team and coaching staff who are in Torrox, staying at the Hotel Urban Dream in El Morche, where they will spend time training for the sporting season. Medina, during the meeting with the CEO of Cordoba CF, Javier González, and the director Adrián Fernández, was presented with the club’s strip signed by all the players. TIE card FROM 2021, British residents will apply for the new resident card with a photo called TIE. To avoid overcrowding, the National Police has decided to bring forward the date to start applying for this new Residencia. So, during the transition period up to December 2020, those interested can voluntarily change a green Residencia for a TIE card. The British Consulate informs that if you have a permanent or updated Residencia, you don’t have to change it for the moment. Those living in Nerja and surroundings

MARITIME Rescue has transferred 36 people to the port of Motril, August, 26, rescued from a boat they were occupying in Alboran waters. There were 25 men, nine women and two children, all in good health. According to sources from Maritime Rescue, it was the boat Guardamar Concepcion Arenal that was in charge of the transfer to the Granada dock, where they arrived at 2.40am. After carrying out Covid-19 testing on the immigrants they received medical and nutritional care by the Red Cross, they have since been handed over to the National Police and social services. This comes just one day after Maritime Rescue transferred five men to the port of Motril after rescuing them from a dinghy attempting to reach the Spanish coastline. GOVERNMENT, business leaders and trade union representatives are set to sit down next month to talk about a new extension to Spain’s ERTE job furlough scheme, according to Spanish media. The press reports that Employment and Social Security ministers Yolanda Diaz and Jose Luis Escriva will meet with the CEOE Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations head Antonio Garamendi and union members in Mallorca capital Palma on September 4 to discuss the possibility of extending the scheme. As it stands, the temporary aid financial scheme to

Job furlough extension talks cover the lost earnings of employees whose job contracts have been temporarily suspended due to the Covid-19 crisis is due to end on September 30. Garamendi expressed the view in a recent interview with the El Pais newspaper that the furlough scheme should run until at least December. “What they have to say is how much money there is and until when it will reach, because it is already negotiated,” the CEOE president affirmed. Teachers stall traffic HUNDREDS of cars, buses and even lorries of driving schools gathered on Tuesday, August 25, in several of the streets of Malaga City in a long caravan which left at 11am from the feria grounds, in front of the provincial headquarters of the General Directorate of Traffic, to demand that there be more examiners available, as there is now more demand for students looking to get a driver’s licence and fewer officials, and in times like summer, the problem increases. “We are at a time when many students want to sit their test and the situation is even worse than before because the General Directorate of Traffic has installed a new system, called Capa, which means that you have to adapt to the capacity they have, in a place where traffic adapts to the needs of society,” explains Francisco Naranjo,
president of the Provincial Association of Malagueñas Driving Schools (APAM) and manager of the Ruta 7 driving school. Antonio Martín, president of the Provincial Association of Driving Schools of Malaga (APAE), stressed that “there are 15,000 students who already have their theoretical exam approved and who are waiting to be able to do the practical” and stressed that great damage is being caused not only for driving schools, but the students themselves since many need this licence to work. No student wants to wait four months for the exam, especially when the classes are not cheap. The president of APAE even affirms that there will be driving schools that would have to close if the number of examiners in Malaga is not increased.

AN off-duty National Police officer saved the life of a 50-year-old man last week, who suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest when bathing in a pool in Velez-Malaga. The officer was leaving his home when he heard cries for help indicating that there was a man drowning in the swimming pool of his urbanisation. He immediately went to help and found the victim almost without a pulse surrounded by people, including his wife, who was already beginning to perform CPR on her husband. The officer applied chest compressions whilst his wife performed the breathing, thus managing to stabilise him until the arrival of the ambulance.

THE project for Torrox to have a new football pitch, to replace the current one in El Morche continues to cause political controversy. The PP government team’s intention to acquire a plot of 13,000 square metres in the area of Santa Rosa-Los Llanos for €1.8 million has not convinced the left-wing opposition groups, PSOE and IU, who have filed an appeal against the latest agreements. Both formations have taken to court the agreement for the “declaration of public interest of the land after the expensive acquisition for the location of a sports complex.” In addition, PSOE and IU have presented a letter
demanding precautionary measures for the suspension of the file, “in such a way that if it were impossible to build the sports complex on that land because the urban legislation specifically prohibited it, the property in question would be of no interest to be acquired and thus the town hall of Torrox would not concur in considerable economic damage.” Mayor, Óscar Medina, is disappointed in the decision by the PSOE and IU, and warned that the project “has all the correct technical and legal reports that support the urban operation.”

Back to nature THE Parque Loro Sexi in Almuñecar is more than an ornithological park, in it, different birds, mammals and a great variety of plants coexist that are meticulously cared for by the dedicated team in charge of maintenance, cleaning and feeding. STILL ONGOING: The wash-wash scam investigation. TWO brothers, of Nigerian origin, have been arrested for their part in a scam dyeing banknotes. The scam is commonly known as the ‘wash-wash’ or ‘tinted ticket’ scam. The scammers met first with victims in Velez-Malaga in a proposed sale of roadside assistance cranes. The scam involves the dyeing of banknotes to aid in the transport and laundering of large sums of cash. Initially, genuine notes are dyed, allowing the victim to witness the process from start to finish. Once satisfied, the
same process is completed swapping genuine cash for counterfeit. When the notes arrive at the desired destination and are washed clean as previously shown, the victims are left with a pile of paper with no face value. The brothers have successfully carried out up to €55,000 worth of ‘tinted ticket’ scams in the region, and are being detained whilst the investigation continues. Police are not ruling out the possibility of further arrests in the future as part of the ongoing investigation.

Buggy bother TWO young people, around 21 years of age, have been transferred to the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía with various injuries after the vehicle in which they were travelling crashed down an embankment in Torrox. One of the women was trapped by part of the vehicle, a 4 × 4 buggy that rolled about 200 metres, requiring the release from the frame by firefighters. The Local Police of Torrox reported that after an initial assessment, the young woman showed a possible fracture of the femur. The incident occurred on Monday, August 24 at the Tamango Hill urbanisation, in the Calaceite area of Torrox Costa. The buggy was part of an excursion group in which other similar vehicles participated in a route organised by an adventure tourism company.

EWN took to the streets to ask the public and local bar and restaurant owners how the restrictions have affected them. We were surprised to discover that the general public finds it more of a hindrance than the establishment owners who seemed to have faith in their customer’s ability to make the right decision. • Tim Orram an expat who lives in Benalmadena and is originally from Bristol said, “It’s bulls**t, I think it’s a scam. I go to bars and still see people smoking there without ‘safely’ distancing. Also, if you ask the police the specifics of the l a w t h e y just shrug because they are just as confused about it as we are.” • Kate Kelly an expat who lives in Torre-
blanca said “The smoking ban is so confusing. Which is such a shame as I have felt that the Spanish approach to the Coronavirus has been well organised and communicated so far. I vape and am really unclear as to when and where I can do that now. It has made us a bit wary as to going out at night and so we have been mostly staying on our balcony.” • Maria Jose of Los Angeles bar in Albir on the Costa Blanca is aware of the problems other bars, restaurants a n d cafes a r e experiencing, but has not had any real issues herself. “It has not really been a problem for us as we have a lot of outdoor space and we are located on the street, so it is quite easy for smokers to social distance.”
She went on to say that, “Our customers have all been very responsible when it comes to hand cleaning, wearing masks, and now keeping a distance when smoking.”
• Elliott Wright, owner of popular restaurant Olivia’s in La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol, has not seen the smoking ban as such a big issue and praised his customers, saying “Under the circumstances, people have understood that smoking is an issue and have politely smoked outside or in a smoke zone without issues.”
Drive-in Succes THE first deputy mayor of Velez-Malaga and councillor for Tourism, Jesús Pérez Atencia, spoke of the success of the Velez-Malaga drive-in movie theatre, an initiative launched by the Tourism delegation, in which some 2,000 people have enjoyed the screenings. Atencia explained, “this event has been a boost to the economy of the town in these very difficult times. “The crisis of Covid19 has forced a twist on tourism work, and we thought this was a good way to organise an event for people, in which everyone felt safe, and also guaranteed the health of the attendees and the respect of sanitary regulations,” said the coun-

FROM Monday, August 17, following Galicia and the Canary Islands example, the Spanish Ministry of Health banned smoking in the street and public spaces in Andalucia where smokers cannot guarantee a distance of two metres from others. This is one of the new restrictions published by the Junta de Andalucia which came into force as well as others on nightlife opening times and monitoring capacity. The smoking ban applies to all outdoor public spaces, from streets to bar terraces when a minimum distance of two metres cannot be respected. This also applies to devices such as vapes, e-cigarettes and hookas. Also, if somebody is caught smoking in a bar or establishment it is not just them who can receive a penalty, both the owner and the smoker can be fined for anything from €100 to €3,000 for breaking the restrictions.

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Magistrate Alfonso Villagómez Cebrián, annulled Madrid’s Autonomous Government’s ban on smoking last week; in a democratic country and with a legal system that protects the people’s fundamental rights and freedom, we should all consider the necessity and legality of the actions of the public authorities when they take our freedoms away. Every day we come across new regulations that tell us how we have to act, what we can do and what not, with whom we can and cannot meet, where we can go and where not. Moreover, we must not forget that all these regulations affect rights and freedoms protected by the Spanish Constitution, which can only be limited in a situation of a State of Exception, as regulated by the constitutional text itself. It all started with the lockdown decree last March which prevented us from free movement and assembly knowing that in a State of Alarm these rights and freedoms can’t be touched, 40 million Spanish residents accepted the situation due to fear of this pandemic which has rocked most of the world. After the State of Alarm finished, the Autonomous Regions were given back their power. However, they have regulated numerous aspects of our daily life through legal orders that are null and void, since they are contrary to the Government’s Royal Decree-Law. This Royal Decree-Law, known as the ‘New Normal’ that imposes several health and safety rules (some of them constitutionally questionable) have to be controlled and imposed by the Autonomous Administrations; for example, wearing a face mask. The Autonomous Communities have not limited themselves to imposing the Royal Decree-Law, but have in turn regulated a stricter version, approving regulations that are therefore illegal. In addition, this situation produces legal uncertainty which is also constitutionally unacceptable. And in the middle of all this chaos are the members of the Security Forces, obeying

All this opens up many questions, such as, why is the government going down this road? Are our politicians uneducated with regard to health and economic issues? All these questions will have to be answered sooner or later. Bearing in mind that politicians have never been objective thinkers, we should not hesitate to question them regarding how they legislate our fundamental rights and freedoms.

Possible takeover bid SHARES in Britain’s largest internet sup plier BT have been dropping sharply over the past months even though the company still continues to make signifi cant profits and has a huge annual turnover. It didn’t help that in line with many other companies around Europe it sus pended its dividend but with a reduc tion of value close to 40 per cent in the last year, BT management fear that it is likely to attract a predatory takeover. Sky News reported that BT has con tacted American Investment Bank Gold
man Sachs asking that it should prepare a defence strategy in the event that a takeover bid is launched. Should a takeover actually be fact rather than fiction, it could be either a private equity firm or Deutsche Telecom AG which has shown interest in the British corporation for several years but it does come with baggage. Like other previously government owned organisations, when privatised in 1984, there were a number of regula tion put in place by the then govern ment which are still extant and a new

owner could well find itself at odds with those regulations which make the group responsible to the UK government as well as its shareholders. There’s also the matter of coping with superfast broadband and the introduc tion of 5G which will require greater in put from British companies now that Chinese Group Huawei Technologies will have a far reduced involvement. Add to this, a welldocumented pen sion shortfall and any takeover could be problematic although in the longrun, the value of BT is bound to go up.

CAUTIOUS: Rishi Sunak looking positive. FOR the first time since 1960, the UK government’s debt of just over £2 (€2.2) trillion is greater than Gross Domestic Product (GDP) according to the Office for National Statis tics (ONS). Debt had been creeping up during the latter part of 2019, but the lockdown and pandemic has hit Britain bad ly and the fact is that for the past four months spending has exceeded tax income. Eat Out scheme. Analysts forecast that once these two significant amounts are paid, the need to borrow will drop, especial ly as company VAT payments will be due and the Furlough scheme will finish. Britain will not benefit in the way that Italy and Spain have from the financial sup port from the European Union and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak will have to be creatively cau tious in his autumn budget and hope that significant trade deals following final Brexit divorce are just around the corner.

Lima airport contract THE Inti Punko consortium, comprising Spanish company Sacyr and Peruvian Group GyM, has been awarded a contract to construct a second runway at the Jorge Chávez airport in Lima, Peru. This is part of an ongoing project to increase landings and capacity at the capital’s main airport which has an overall budget of €330 million to be completed by 2022. In addition to the construc tion of the second runway, 3,480 metres in length, the contract includes the supply of more than 10 kilometres of new taxiways, approach lights, beacon systems, navigation and surveillance equipment.

THE British government’s final decision to allow teachers to decide student’s exam results was not only ridiculous, but positively wreaked of a hasty and desperate endeavour to resolve a problem that they could have simply done without. After all, when you are in debt to the tune of two trillion pounds and gripped by a pandemic bringing the country to its knees, having a bunch of youngsters crying in their cornflakes and marching on Downing Street because they consider they should have received higher than an F in mathematics, was just about the last thing they needed. Appeasing the teachers, pupils and public in one fell swoop was actually a stroke of genius, they simply wanted the problem to go away - and it has. Unfortunately, because of the method used to obtain their grades and through no fault of their own, in years to come the classes of 2020 will be viewed on with suspicion by just about everyone, universities and future employers alike trying to have us believe that teachers would be either competent, unbiased or impartial enough to deliver up fair and just results in these ex-

You can’t tell me that a teacher, who is
aware that a better result for young Jimmy who is not the brightest, but, is ‘such a nice lad’ and has ‘tried very hard,’ doesn’t merit perhaps just a little tweak in the marking department? Well of course it would. Couple that with the fact that schools are judged by their overall success rate and you have the perfect storm for educational skullduggery. Is it any wonder the
diddum’s experienced one of the highest pass rates in history? No, I’m afraid this is merely one more step in the lowering of British education standards, which has been slowly eroding for years. I’m actually pretty convinced that the leftie luvvies will adore this method of selection. No exams, no stress and if they had their way, no losers. I predict a whole glut of university graduates stacking the shelves of Sainsbury’s in the dumbed down years to come. You truly do have to feel sorry for poor old Boris. He’s found himself at the head of a government experiencing the worst series of crisis in living memory. Become a new dad. Been at death’s door with the Covid virus and when he tries to slip away into the British countryside for a brief respite, has an irate farmer chase him off the land where he pitches his tent! Absolutely besotted
FOLLOWING on from our previous article about losing our dog Chalkie, we found ourselves trying to adjust to a life without him and in all honesty, it was a daily struggle. We missed him not being there to greet us, his cuddles and the fact he was always by our side, without question. As days and weeks passed, we sat down as a family several times to talk about how the massive hole he left behind was prominent, and even more so with the current climate, and the new normal, how it wasn’t going away and was there even a possibility of us moving on without it ever being filled again. After thinking about it long and hard we decided to start looking at the option of homing another dog as we

couldn’t move past this. We started to research into various charities and animal shelters but nothing positive was really happening for us after having reached out a few times. It was also very heartbreaking to see all the animals in the kennels without loving homes, but we were so happy when we were able to rescue and home two adorable puppies who I immediately named Han Solo and Chewbacca (I am a massive Star Wars fan ha ha). They are turning three months old and just about to go for their second batch of inoculations. The force is strong with them, they are playful, full of energy and have settled right in as family members. We are absolutely besotted.

Good luck with that one Germany... MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LOVE dogs - they are just the best pets in the world. They just want to be your best friend and are very loyal. My ambition is to be half the man my dog thinks I am. The greeting when you return home is ‘Wow you came back. Thank you!!’ So you will understand that when I read that North Korea’s leader has reportedly ordered his people to hand over their pet dogs so they can be turned into meat for restaurants absolutely made me feel sick and totally outraged. It’s bad enough they eat dogs in the first place, but to come round your house and remove your beloved pet is just not even something I want to think about. There was another doggy story that caught my eye this week and initially I thought it was crazy but after looking at it closer it isn’t. The story was on the Mail online which does not seem to have the ability to report anything truthfully which
is infuriating. Their headline was that in Germany owners had to walk their dogs two hours a day and would get prosecuted if they didn’t. After looking into it it’s not quite as bad but still difficult to understand how they could police it. But what they are saying is dogs aren’t cuddly toys. They also have their own needs, which need to be taken into account. Under the new rules it will no longer be legal for Germany’s 9.4 million dogs to be left alone at home for long periods. Keeping dogs tethered or on a lead for a significant amount of time could also be banned, which is absolutely correct. What they don’t seem to have taken into consideration is that not all dogs are the same. My dog is 14 years old. He couldn’t walk two hours a day. He likes to go out for two walks a day, get a bit of exercise, do what he has to do and come home. He’s emptied again at night before we close for the day. Also you have to take into consideration the size and breed. A tiny Chihuahua doesn’t need the same exercise as a Labrador. Anyway good luck with that one Germany. Maybe whilst timing dogs’ walks you can check whether everyone has their face masks on and are socially distancing at the same time!

They call me Sir Lunchalot GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AMIDST the never-ending rule changes of the new normal, one thing remains constant - each day, lunch is something of an occasion. Having always preferred to lunch, rather than dinner, I try to find restaurants in Marbella to fulfil my desire for great food, and stylish settings. Trust me, it’s not as easy as it should be. Living directly on the beach, one would expect simple, yet fantastic seafood and local cuisine. However, it seems that the restaurateurs of the area prefer to mix things up, with an awful lot of Asian fusion. Yes, I’m confused too. If you’re fortunate to live in Andalucia, there are so many amazing culinary possibilities. While dining out should be something to look forward to, I find it something of a chore, as I try to think of where to go. First World problems for sure, but still, problems are problems.
That changed this week, as I stumbled upon my new favourite place. Primeria Selection, in Marbella town is possibly the most stylish and passionate of all. Stylish, as it exudes simple elegance. Passionate, as the owners Luis and Encarna Galán are knowledgeable and interested in every aspect. I met a friend on an impossibly hot Wednesday afternoon, when the only thing to calm the heat was chilled Veuve Clicquot, and an ocean of San Pellegrino. We shared some burrata and then asked what else was on offer. I was told that in the evening the menu lists daily specials. One thing I’ve noticed a lot in Marbella - despite the economic downturn and lack of custom, most places are reluctant to bend the rules, remaining trapped in opening times that simply no longer apply. If a customer wishes to go off piste, and let’s say, order from the evening menu at lunch time, why not? They have money, and you have what they want. I believe they call it ‘good business.’ Anyhow, that’s exactly what hap-

pened. When I asked what time the exciting evening menu begins, ever smiling, and super well-informed Encarna replied, “right now, if you like!” Suddenly our lunch became an occasion and naturally so did our tab. Amazingly fresh prawn tortilla with black truffle. Potato salad with cod tartare. A locally sourced cheese plate. A well-priced and delicious Rioja. Sorry if I’m making you hungry. This couple are passionate about every aspect of their business, and more so, about promoting seriously good Spanish produce. That evening, I thought of how well they ran their chic eatery. Hands on and hard work - I know it’s hard work, as I used to be involved in a similar restaurant in Dublin. That’s the thing about whatever you choose to do - without a true passion, there’s no point. I was recently interviewed for an English magazine, about my lifestyle, and life in general. When asked why I live in Spain, I replied, because I am fortunate. Yes, there are many things about Marbella that surprise me. But a life without surprise, well, where’s the fun in that?

HELP FOR THE BRIDE WHO’S TOO WIDE!
WE’VE all put on weight over lockdown. Hold the front page! Well, that’s according to Boris who’s now busily urging lardy Brits to lose weight to reduce the risk of succumbing to Covid-19. (Err, how much weight have YOU lost, Boris?). And as for Jamie Oliver, he’s tried for years to reduce obesity in school kids with mixed results. Maybe Jamie should turn his attention to adults too, with the news that one UK c h u rc h p l a n s t o r i p o u t church pews so ‘fat folk’ can walk down the aisle ... “Here comes the bride, 40 inches wide,” is the headline in one paper describing a Dorset church’s plans to remove some of its pews because the aisle is too narrow for obese couples to walk down. According to its Parochial Church Council: “We have had occasions at wed-

No longer does the bride need to slim to fit the dress, but now she needs to slim to fit the church. What next, are they going to widen the doors, have a snack break half-way through the service or add a pizza oven and a deep fat fryer in case anybody gets a bit peckish if the sermon drags on? Not forgetting to have the floor reinforced. Absolutely ridiculous! Clearly time not to change the church but the people wanting to get married there! In this time of Covid and the proven link with obesity, a prewedding diet would seem to be in order. The answer is to lose weight, not wreck the
church. But let him who is without sin cast the first scone. (Sorry!) At this point I should declare an interest. My 90-yearold neighbour told me that the doctor had said he must lose weight and cut down on his daily four cans of beer. CONFUSING WORDS: The US has influenced our spelling. they know a word but they get it wrong. Grievious (for grievous); henious (heinous); interpretate (interpret); labryinth (labyrinth); loyalism (loyalty); mischievious (mischievous); nucular (nuclear) and reputated (reputed) are a few examples I have noticed - both in speech and print.
Some are silly buzz words used over and over again by Sunday Times contributors, such as bling; cheesy; chutzpah; and twee. The word ‘sexy’ is used to describe software and ideas for cooking. Maybe, they think the use of these words is ‘cool.’ Others are intentional slang: fantabulous; gynormous; hu-
mungous; squillions; yonks. They are quite expressive and most of us know what they mean. The US has influenced our spelling, pronunciation and even meaning of words. Before the war, we in England had a per fectly good word for a thousand million (milliard) while a billion meant a million millions. It doesn’t any more. Brasil and civilise became Brazil and civilize; programme lost its last two letters; colour is widely spelt as color and many of us have capitulated to practice our beliefs rather than practise them. Was it the Americans who persuaded us to pronounce the English town of Shrewsbury to rhyme with Dewsbury? It’s unlikely that Chester will ever be spelt Cheicester, but will Leicester soon be spelt Lester? If we take phonetic spelling to its extreme, I shudder to think how
Norfolk will be spelt. Why is it necessary to use obscure acronyms in place of words which describe an organisation? We may know what UNO and NATO mean, but what about NASED (National Association of State Election Directors)? And why has their use in social media spread to expressions such as TBH (to be honest) and LOL (lots of love)? I began thinking about words when I heard this conversation on the terrace of a bar last week. I had no need to jot it down. “I kind of asked Harry, like.” “Cool. Like, did he know?” “He went “I dunno; you better ask the boss.” I then noticed that the guy sitting at the far end table, with an empty wine bottle in front of him, looked a bit bladdered. I hoped he wasn’t going to deliver a technicolour yawn on to the pavement.

DEAR Euro Weekly, I live in a particularly Spanish neighbourhood in Fuengirola and there are a couple of Spanish bars owned by the same people that are situated next to each other. Every single night the bars are ram-packed, sure they serve a little tapas to go with the drinks, but I am talking no social distancing, no masks, absolutely no time for chairs or tables to be wiped down and disinfected. It’s bedlam. The police pass this area regularly as it is near the police station and a main road, but I have never seen them stop and do any kind of enforcement or checks. Are we back to us against them again? Surely it should be one rule for everyone if we ever want rid of this horrible virus?

TK Dear Euro Weekly, I got a bit of a fright last week when I read your report on Facebook about the possibility of a lockdown in September and I must say the load of comments made it worse. However, when I read your follow up article it did begin to make sense and of course, if that is what the government ask

First one closes their borders then another follows suit in what seems like a childlike move, do they really have our best interests at heart or have we become bargaining tools in their future plans? Three weeks ago, the UK government decided to re-impose a 14-day quarantine on everyone arriving from Spain forcing travellers into panic and trying to return home at short notice. At the time, Spain’s PM Pedro Sánchez said visitors would be safer from the virus in Spain than in the UK, and he hoped Britain would think again. However, the UK government have not changed their mind and an official spokesperson for BoJo even warned that ‘no travel is risk-free during this pandemic.’ Now, the UK government has said anyone travelling from France and the Netherlands will have to quarantine, which again caused a mass exodus among those holidaying in these destinations. It was reported that the latest measure was put into place as new Covid-19 infections grew across Europe and France, in particular, reported a large increase in infections in the past week. T h e m o v e i s a g i g a n t i c b l o w t o F r a n c e ’s tourism industr y as the previous move was to Spain’s. Is there something we are missing? A bigger picture? Take away the destinations and people will spend money on home soil maybe?

It’s not just time to talk about mental health - it’s time to ask, listen and care MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED LET’S not just encourage someone to talk about their mental health, let’s practise to be good listeners. It’s easy for someone to say “say how you feel” but how many times have we sat there knowing full well they aren’t listening to what you have to say. When it comes to the need to talk about our mental health, we seem to put all of the responsibility in the court of the person who is already struggling. Sure, nobody can read minds, and people can’t expect specific help without asking for it. But mental health problems can make it harder to talk and ask for help in the first place. The responsibility of reaching out for help has to be matched - to provide safe spaces to talk, to listen, to not judge. My experiences have taught me the difficulty of coping with unwanted and distressing thoughts. When I was dealing with unwanted thoughts, having to seek help felt like an overwhelming task when I was already just surviving. I have often tried to reach out to people but felt like I am being a burden, why should they have to carry my pain too? It can be very diffi-
cult for people to go there - to be with someone in their suffering - especially when they may not see the reality of it face-to-face, or don’t feel equipped to talk about such things. But this isn’t about having a degree in psychiatry, or even mental health awareness, we simply just want someone to talk to who isn’t going to judge. We all have a personal responsibility to take care of our health as best as we can, and to try and seek support when we realise we can’t manage on our own. With my own mental health, my responsibility is to make sure I have people around me who I can rely on, be open with, and allow myself to be supported by. Also as an outsider, with family and friends also suffering with mental health issues, we must take responsibility for putting our fears aside when people indicate they are in distress, get them to keep talking, and get them to share the load BUT let’s LISTEN, listen like we mean it. Stop what you are doing, and listen, two minutes of your time can save a person’s life, it can change their thought process, it can distract them from whatever they may be feeling. I grew up with my Dad saying “You have two ears, one mouth … use them in that order.” So instead of putting the responsibility on people to talk about their mental health, let’s educate ourselves about mental health problems, ask people about their mental health, and practise being good listeners whether we have our own experiences of mental health problems or not. Body shaming of all types is unacceptable as it invokes a strong feeling of self- doubt, which can be harmful in the long run. While significant attention has been drawn to fat-shaming, skinny-shaming continues to be a problem. Be it fat, thin, tall, short, promoting all equally can help people, especially women, to become more confident in their appearances. Social anxiety and eating disorders are some of the examples of body shaming effects. We must stop putting women down for their body weight and their waist
sizes. A healthy, balanced diet, with regular exercise, is
the key to a healthy life. But we need to live a happy life too.
