But the Andalucia regional Health ministry stressed they were necessary on the grounds “leisure premises with mainly nighttime opening hours, like drinks bars, discos and dance halls, are currently the origin of the epidemic outbreaks with the highest number of associated cases.” In fact on Monday Almeria registered a provincial record for the number of people testing positive for the virus

in 24 hours. The bad news on the evolution of the Covid19 pandemic in Almeria over the last few weeks and now the introduction of new restrictions on what used to be taken for granted ordinary life are not exactly reasons to cheer. But it is worth remembering the reasons for the new law and listening to the administrations’ messages that with responsible behaviour and everyone doing their bit, the province can get back to normal as soon as possible.

TABERNO residents are up in arms about a large-scale pig farm project in the locality. Crowds of locals, many of them expats, have been turning out every evening for weeks to protest in front of the town hall against the plans for a farm for some 6,000 pigs in the Cerro Roldan area. Real proof of the strength of local feeling is the number of residents who have signed a petition organised by the ‘Taberno No Se Vende’ platform created to coordinate efforts to fight the project: to date some 700 out of a population of approximately 1,000. As it stands the town has put a stop to the construction works, for now at least. In comments to Spanish media, Taberno mayor Antonio Martes said that while the project had the necessary Junta de Andalucia environmental licence, the regional govern-

ment had informed the council about issues which indicated that the company behind the farm was not abiding by all the permit stipulations. One of the leaders of Taberno No Se Vende, Alejandro Garcia, told the Euro Weekly News there were two reasons why the council could “legally paralyse” the construction, is-

sues on which the platform is working with ecological associations and lawyers as a basis for getting it stopped. First there is the question of water. According to Alejandro, in its application for the licence the pig farm company said it would be able to access water

near the site, but this is not the case. Instead, Alejandro alleges, it established an unauthorised connection to a water pipe, which was not only not in the original project, it led to the company being reported to the Guardia Civil and to the paralysis of the works. The second issue, Alejandro said, is the construction has involved moving a lot more earth than was approved. Explaining why locals are just so vehemently opposed to the farm, many Brits, Dutch, Germans and Belgians who have chosen to make Taberno their home among them, Alejandro stressed that it is a small, quiet, clean locality without any contaminating industry. He insisted it “makes no sense” to allow this kind of business to start operating there. Alejandro claims that if the

The recognition comes on top of the SICTID quality distinctions awarded by the Secretary General for Tourism and the CEE blue flags Mojacar’s beaches have already earned this year. The Mojacar tourism office has since reopening its doors on June 15 been applying Covid-19 controls which comply with guidelines, recommendations and measures to reduce infection coordinated by the Secretary of State for Tourism, the regional governments and the FEMP Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces.

For example Euro Weekly News last week found itself under attack on social media after it carried a report about the latest Covid-19 measures being implemented in Spain.

AT the beginning of August the UK’s Daily Express carried this clickbait headline: ‘Brits ‘scared to go out’ as local beach resorts turn into ‘Benidorm on steroids’.’ It was a report about large crowds converging on Cornish resorts, and the apprehension locals felt about huge influxes of strangers. The paper said: ‘Speaking to the BBC Claire Harris, a 37year-old St Ives’ resident, said she’d banned her children from the town’s harbour and main shopping areas due to the number of people. She claimed the influx had left her “too scared to go food shopping” for fear of picking up the virus.’ The report itself contained no mention WHATSOVER of the popular Spanish resort, so why was the word ‘Benidorm’ used in the headline and intro in such a gratuitously offensive manner?

‘boycott EWN’ t-shirts and face masks! The idea that a paper would deliberately print fake news to harm the economy of a country in which it operates is beyond ludicrous. If fury has to be expressed - and I really believe that it does - it should be directed at the bureaucrats who, right now are playing us like fiddles by arbitrarily introducing new Covid-19 regulations, and insisting on moving the goalposts every few hours or so. This sort of game playing has in the past and will continue in the future to perplex both journalists and the public. Confusing briefings by government officials can only result in the inadvertent spread of misinformation at a time when clarity is most needed. All this confusion has to end soon if any shred of sanity is to be rescued from the wreckage of 2020.

CHALLENGERS: ‘Paul the Pool’, his wife Anna Bedford and their daughters Imogen and Alannah raised €755. THE pandemic stopped the annual Walk for Life Arboleas cancer charity fundraiser from going ahead this year, but the 6k Any Way Challenge introduced to take its place has proved to be a winner. Local people have raised a grand total of €6,025.69 by covering the distance walking, running, swimming, pacing on a treadmill or cycling without gathering in groups. All the money will go towards helping people in the area who are affected by cancer. The charity expressed its enormous gratitude to all the challengers, their sponsors and everyone who supported them. “We have a wonderful community, and we could not do what we do without you,” the organisation said. WORKING HOLIDAY: The PP leader used his Almeria break to meet with provincial and regional politicians and take part in party events. THE leader of Spain’s main Opposition party opted for the Costa Almeria for his family summer break. Popular Party national president Pablo Casado spent 10 days in Aguamarga in the Cabo de Gata Natural Park with his wife and two children, Spanish press reported. They used their time

to explore the park’s coves, beaches and villages; the family were snapped enjoying lunch at a beachside restaurant in Isleta del Moro. But it wasn’t all play and no work for Casado. He also took the opportunity to meet with provincial and regional PP politicians and take part in party

events in locations including Almeria, Balanegra and Pulpi, and to comment on provincial issues. “Almeria is a safe tourist destination and one of the best coasts in Europe,” the PP leader tweeted on Friday, insisting that water resources have to be guaranteed with European funds, as do the high-speed rail link.

Risky rescue A LAD proved to be a real hero when he put himself at considerable risk to rescue a drowning fox from an irrigation pool in Roquetas de Mar. The youngster clambered down the steep side of the pool and clinging onto a tube with one arm coaxed the floundering fox towards him. He let go of the tube long enough to fish the exhausted animal out of the water, carefully balancing himself so as not to end up in the same predicament. He then managed to edge himself and the bedraggled fox up to the outstretched arm of a mate and to safety. As the video shows the fox was all but done in by its ordeal and shaking. Again the lad showed a true caring side, carrying it to a sunny spot to warm it through while and giving it reassuring strokes. “It’s done now tough guy, breathe easy,” the young rescuer tells the fox.

MOJACAR Council has taken the first step towards making a new health centre for the municipality a reality. Councillors unanimously approved an Urban Development Agreement between the local administration and five Mojacar residents under which an area of land between Mojacar village and the coast will be ceded for the construction of the future facilities. The council described the Los Gurullos site as an “excellent location” given its central position and accessibility. At the same extraordinary plenary meeting council members agreed the regulatory bases for the “Mojacar Contigo” financial aid plan for local businesses and the self-employed. The programme is aimed

A GROUP of paddle surfers are safe and sound after a long night and several failed attempts to rescue them from a tricky to access spot in Cabo de Gata. The Guardia Civil received the alert early Saturday evening that the three adults and three children had gone missing early while they were paddle surfing and exploring the Vela Blanca cave.

All available resources were immediately scrambled, with more than 25 officers taking part in the air and sea effort to find them. It wasn’t until 7am the following morning that they finally located the group perched on a rock near to the cove. Guardia scuba divers launched themselves into the sea to get up close to them and help them feel

A MOTOCYCLIST suffered minor injuries after running into a rope strung across a road in Pulpi’s San Juan de los Terreros coastal resort and coming off his bike. Pulpi Local Police appealed to the public for their help in finding whoever was responsible for running the rope between two palm trees on Avenida del Mediterraneo, just before the roundabout leading to the Las Gaviotas residential complex, and causing the accident soon after midnight on Thursday August 13. Posting on social media,

Pulpi Council reported the rope had been cut from a parking area behind the Mar Serena beach bar just minutes earlier. The post said Local Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw anything which could be related to the incident to call 670 618 181. The local authority reported the victim was recovering at home from the accident, which it described as “completely intentional.” It “could have had even more serious consequences,” the council pointed out.

Mechanical help NEW machinery is helping Adra Council in its intensified efforts on cleaning, disinfecting and washing down public spaces. A local agricultural company has pitched in and paid half the cost of the machinery, which the local council said will benefit the whole locality. The administration maintained the acquisition represents “a step forward” in the improvements it is implementing in its municipal cleaning and maintenance services, and will be especially useful for areas attracting the most people and difficult to access streets. The council pointed out that since the start of the pandemic it has considerably increased the amount of resources allocated to cleaning and disinfection “with the aim of preventing hypothetical focuses of infection in public areas of the town, as well as on rubbish skips, in recreation zones and on the busiest streets.”

Dutch travel warning THE Netherlands is warning against all but non-essential travel to Almeria following a surge in Covid-19 cases in the province in recent weeks. The Dutch government has added Almeria to its code orange travel list, meaning residents of Holland are advised not to travel to the region unless absolutely necessary. Travellers arriving back from the province are recommended to get tested for the virus immediately at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport and are urged to self-isolate for 14 days. The Dutch travel warning for Almeria came into effect first thing on Sunday, at the same time as for Burgos, Navarra, Madrid, Salamanca and the Balearic Islands. Several other regions of Spain were already on the orange list, including Huesca, Soria, Zaragoza and Teruel.

NEW SKILL: The workshops introduced participants to using wood and lead for artistic printing.

TYPOGRAPHY workshops in Cuevas del Almanzora made a highly creative impression on those taking part as was evident in the beautiful work they produced. The three weekend workshops in the art of and technique of arranging letters and text were orgnanised by the Emilio Sdun Legacy cultural association with the collaboration of Cuevas Council, and with Eva Mengual of La Seiscuatro as teacher.

The cultural association was set up to promote the work of the German artist, who lived and worked in Los Guiraos in Cuevas for many years before his death some five years ago, producing unique and exclusive publications. The workshops were the association’s first organised activities, and aimed to introduce the participants to Sdun’s work and to using wood and lead for artistic printing. Each four-hour introduction

to typography session began with a brief talk about the composition of Sdun’s work and some of the most common terminology in the world of printing. Participants then had to come up with a work on which they played with typography to create a palindrome, or a word or sentence which reads the same backwards and forwards, and experiment with different materials for the backgrounds. The results were surprising and eye-catching.

PULPI Council has urged residents and visitors to the municipality to put parties and celebrations on hold until the pandemic situation improves. The local authority put out the request on August 12 following a meeting of the Emergencies Plan made up of representatives of the Local Police, Guardia Civil, Civil Protection, Red Cross, the municipal health centre and town hall, as well as local businesses. The meeting discussed the current Covid-19 situation in the locality, concerns about the effect of the appearance of more cases and possible action to minimise the risks of infections. The decision to strongly recommend putting back parties or celebrating occasions like weddings, christenings and birthdays was, the council said, because “as we all know, at these events we relax the safety measures and they are, and have been, the cause of infections.” Also decided at the meeting was launching a campaign to raise awareness about the importance of complying with health authority safety recommendations, beefed up Local Police and Guardia Civil actions

DECISIONS: The meeting ended with a list of actions aimed at dealing with the current Covid-19 situation. on preventing concentrations of people and gatherings to drink and party in public places, and asking the Government Sub-delegation to reinforce the municipal Guardia Civil personnel. Another agreed move was to request the Junta de Andalucia to provide the Local Police and Guardia Civil with more exhaustive information about positive cases of the virus in Pulpi in order to better control the corresponding self-isolations, while ensuring full confidentiality and data protection. Mayor Juan Pedro Garcia called on the public to be aware and to do their bit.

“We have to row in the same direction and we all have the same goal, which is to look out for the health and economy of Pulpi residents”, he said. “I am sure difficult times await us and we have to be prepared to face them”, the mayor warned. The day after the meeting the council reported Pulpi’s deputy mayor had tested positive for Covid-19. A post on the council Facebook page said he was self-isolating at home, but was asymptomatic and felt fine. The post also reported the town hall had been temporarily closed for a thorough disinfection as a preventative measure.

SYMPATHY: The council expressed its support for and solidarity with Raul’s family and friends “at this difficult time.” CHIRIVEL was in mourning after the lifeless body of a 20-yearold local man who had been missing for three days appeared in Mazarron in Murcia on August 13. The council confirmed the tragic news about the discovery of Raul Vivancos Asensio in a post on social media.

The local authority also announced it had suspended all the cultural activities which had been planned over the following three days and offered “all support for and solidarity with his family and friends at this difficult time.” Raul was last seen on Sunday August 9 in Mazarron.

Easier bathing Do your bit CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA Council has installed ‘flexi-walkway’ beach matting on the Quitapellejos beach in Palomares to make bathing more accessible for people with reduced mobility. The local authority explained the walkways are made from recycled plastic and are compatible with the environment, as well as making it easier for people with mobility difficulties to reach the edge of the shore. The initiative is a further

demonstration of a “firm commitment to improve and advance in the accessibility of its beaches and its tourist resources,” the Cuevas administration commented, adding that it is well aware that “adapted and accessible tourism is

a growing segment.” The council said the flexi-walkways will be rolled out on the other accessible points on municipal beaches like Playa Luis Siret in Villaricos and in Pozo del Esparto from the next holiday season.

Missing man located THERE was relief in Olula del Rio following the news of a local resident missing for over a month is safe and well in Baza in Granada. The council confirmed on Facebook that Juan Francisco Gonzalez Reche had reappeared and that his family were with him just hours after the local authority issued an appeal to the public on social media to collaborate on the search for the 47-year-old by sharing the post as much as possible. Juan Francisco’s family particularly asked the council to put out a thank you for the “rapid response and productive collaboration,” the administration’s second post stated. “Once again we have shown that Olula del Rio is a supportive town and responds when residents need help,” it ends.

PLEA: The mayor urged the younger generation to wear face masks and social distance. ADRA Council has called on the younger generation to do their bit and help reduce Covid-19 infection rates. Coinciding with International Youth Day on August 12, the local authority urged the locality’s youngsters to show “responsibility” and to “collaborate.” “It is essential to behave with common sense because the virus remains present”, Adra mayor Manuel Cortes warned. “We have to continue maximising all precautions, and hence it is essential that all youngsters are involved in the fight against the coronavirus”, he added. The mayor urged young people to “strictly comply with all the protection measures”, telling them they are “key to stopping the pandemic and

preventing it from spreading, especially among the most vulnerable groups.” At the same time the council put out a reminder that get-togethers to party in public places and consuming alcohol on the street are prohibited and there are fines for breaking the rules. The administration insisted that it is “vital” to avoid crowds and mass gatherings given they are a main source of infections and pointed out that measures like wearing a face mask and social distancing are not only compulsory, but are the “main barriers” to stopping the propagation of Covid-19. The council also repeated the need to stay at home and call the Andalucia Health Serivce in the case of experiencing any symptoms.

Brave and big-hearted Oscar THE 11-year-old from Denia is walking the Camino de Santiago - more than 300 kilometres - with ever-supportive mum Niamh, to raise as much cash as possible for a sensory garden at the La Xara Occupational and Day Centre. “Two years ago, when Oscar was nine years old, he asked if I would take him on a journey. He asked if he could walk the Camino Santiago,” said Niamh, adding: “That’s not just like going for any old walk, it’s a pilgrimage!” In October 2018 and October 2019 determined Oscar covered 470kms of his incredible challenge. The plan was that in October 2020 Oscar would tackle the final 300-plus kilometres of the camino from Leon to Santiago de Compostela. “However, as we all know, 2020 hasn’t quite gone to plan,” explained

mum-of-three Niamh, a well-known singer on the Costa Blanca. To avoid Oscar missing more school after months of lockdown, mum and son hatched ‘a crazier plan.’ Oscar will walk his final 300km of the Camino Santiago through the tricky tracks and trails of Galicia in the very early mornings of August, having started his trek on Friday, August 14. Niamh said: “Oscar’s fundraiser has been incredible. Truly heartwarming. We really can’t thank you all enough. And donations continue to fly in. It’s not too late. But, right now, the focus of our mum/son duo must be to simply walk. “To cover 300km in less than two weeks. To keep each other positive and to take time to bond further and deeply appreciate our surroundings.” Previously Oscar cam-

Fish death legal action A COALITION of animal protection societies has launched legal action against a man who dragged a harmless moon fish out of the sea in Roquetas de Mar and held it down on the sand, leading to its death. The Equinac marine life rescue association, ANADEL, ASPAC, Amigos de los Animales de Castellon and Liberta had already presented a formal report against the man, the owner of a sunbed rental business, for the incident on August 5 to the Almeria Guardia Civil’s SEPRONA nature protection service. Now they have gone one step further and also reported him to a court.

Passenger numbers plummet ALMERIA registered the biggest drop in passenger numbers over the first seven months of the year of any airport in Andalucia. Figures from the AENA public company which manages Spain’s airports show a total of 116,543 passengers went through the provincial airport between the beginning of January and the end of July, nearly 80 per cent less than in the same period of 2019. This compares with an average decrease of just under 69 per cent for the whole region. The number of flights which went in and out of Almeria airport over the seven-month period was down by just under 59 per cent, at 2,833. The fall in operations for the whole of Andalucia was 53.4 per cent. Throughout the more than three months of the national State of Alarm Almeria had virtually no national or international flights.

OVER the years the Costa del Sol has been home to many entertainers and EWN was lucky enough to speak exclusively to Sheena Cochrane who lives in Mijas Costa and was a professional dancer who managed to travel the world performing with some massive names in the process. Sheena has released a book named ‘Exit Stage right’ which is available as an e-book on Kindle and paperback on Amazon. “I began dancing when my mother suggested I do something to use up my excess energy. I wasn’t the best at school and decided maybe I could make my future from dancing. “I was a day student at the Royal Ballet but realising that there were many more girls better than me, I decided that I would be better using my talent as a means to travel the world.” And so, she did, she travelled to the Middle East, the Far East, the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, South America and many more. From there Sheena became one of the famous 60’s Tiller Girls and would ap-

When asked why she gave up such an exciting lifestyle she said “It’s a young profession and I gave up professional dancing in 1981. I was given the option of becoming a dance teacher, but I enjoyed dancing more than teaching.” Would she suggest dancing for the younger generation? “Even if not as a profession, dancing gives you posture and is amazing overall exercise for the body.”

The property owners told the Guardia the robberies took place in the early hours of the morning, but on different dates. In both cases the thief had climbed up an outside wall to reach a window left open due to the high temperatures. Investigations and analysis of the facts led to the identification of the suspect and his eventual arrest following a discreet monitoring of his activities.

Smoothing the way THE drive on the main road connecting Topares with Velez-Blanco town a n d t h e re s t o f t h e province is smoother and safer thanks to resurfacing works, the Almeria provincial council reports. The Diputacion invested €180,000 in the project to upgrade the surface on the four-kilometre stretch of road, now completed, which also included creating a lane for pedestrians and cyclists connecting the Topares district with the municipal swimming pool. The works came under the Provincial Highways Plan approved by the provincial administration for this year, and which has a €9 million share of the ‘Acelera’ programme. This in turn is part of the ‘Plan Almeria’ aimed at promoting the province’s economic and social recovery from the impact of the Covid-19 health crisis. Weapon find THE Spanish Navy has recovered an anti-sonar weapon discovered under the sea just off Roquetas de Mar’s Salinas beach. The Navy reported that a scuba diver came across the device on Sunday August 9 and reported the find to the Guardia Civil, who in turn activated the established protocol for this kind of situation. The Guardia alerted the Navy Maritime Action Surveillance and Operations Centre, or COVAM, in Cartagena. Through COVAM the Maritime Action Admiral sent a team specialising in underwater bomb disposals and divers specialising in disabling mines from the naval Anti-Mine Measures Divers Unit to locate and recover the device, thereby “eliminating the danger” and “minimising the environmental impact.” Also collaborating on the operation was the Guardia Civil and members of the 112 Emergencies service. Devices like the one found in Roquetas’ waters were launched from submarines to confuse sonar and the identification of a target.

Meanwhile, the state’s machinery seems to work to keep us in a constant condition of fear; feeding us constantly rising figures of infected people with Covid-19 and warning us through the media with propaganda messages that it’s due to our ‘irresponsible behaviour’ for meeting up with our families, or the younger generation partying all night long. However, this ‘irresponsible behaviour’ never seems to include our workplaces, business meetings and public transport which is heavily used

WHEN you run a minority government it is often nec­ essary to take note that if you want to push through a controversial idea that it helps to have opposition parties with you. The Spanish government needs money and needs it quickly, so it recognised that many councils throughout the country have significant surpluses in their accounts which are estimated at to­ talling more than €20 billion. Industrial sector growth THE latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that although industr y in Spain is showing definite signs of recovery,

I’m up to here with it all!

THIS week I truly don’t know where to start. Like most of us, I’m actually up to here with all of it. Masks, viruses, black, white, conspiracies, racism, religion, woke, fake news, kneeling, left wing, right wing, immigrants, BLM, knifings, shootings, grooming, lockdowns, offending, demos, diversity, integration, terrorists, politicians, statues, hatred, lies, hypocrisy and Uncle Tom Cobley et al. What was that about halting the planet and jumping off? Lead me to it! However, one thing this ol’ boy has never been guilty of is burying his head in the sand. So contrary to last week’s dissenters, I am in fact fully aware that this whole chaotic mishmash could well be an NWO conspiracy. I actually began to suspect something of this ilk in the early 60’s when a good friend of mine, far more astute than I, often stated that the world was not run by governments, but in his words, controlled by the ‘Twelve men of Wall Street.’ Nothing much has changed since, except that those he referred to are now spread much further afield than a single street in New York! Unfortunately, it appears to me that the whole plot could now be reaching some sort of climax. I fear the con-

using her mobile phone! So they want to tear down statues of our great statesmen and historical figures and in their place erect someone using a phone! It would be a little more acceptable if she’d have actually invented the device. Some chance! I also discovered that the widow of George Floyd, who ‘cried bitterly’ at his funeral, had not in fact seen him for six years. During that same period he had apparently also not paid a single penny in child maintenance. However in a move that just about sums up the priorities of today’s ‘woke’ brigade, she has actually received over $14 million (yep) in donations from ‘sympathetic well-wishers.’ No wonder the brothers could afford those new suits they all looked so uncomfortable in during the memorial ceremonies. What a result they’ve all had. I wonder how much of it has been donated to the charities of people that could truly benefit from it. Not a great deal I’ll be bound. What’s it all about? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY Y O U k n o w y o u ’ re g e t t i n g o l d when the clothes you used to wear, come back into fashion. I noticed it a few years ago, when almost everyone was strutting around with their knees on display, due to purposely designed rips in their jeans. A look that by now, really is past its sell-by-date, and should be forgotten. Yes, for those who follow fashion, you’re still deeply trapped in the 1990s - a period of time that style seems to have escaped. In Puerto Banús, on Tuesday morning, I stopped by Gucci and Dsquared2 to see what’s happening. My style tends to be very preppy, if not classic, so as I skimmed the rails of endless neon colours, sportswear and ugly, chunky trainers, I found nothing to suit. At Ralph Lauren, I was tempted, but then realised, I already have most of the items I was considering. Thankfully my AmEx remained unused. I had a glass of rosé at Sinatra’s Bar, a place I used to hop all over, back in the aforementioned 90’s. It made me think of how life has changed. Back then, I liked to party all day and all night. My life choices were pretty hectic, if not ill advised at times. I realised I was the one who used to ‘over shop’ for designer goods, that I disposed of as quickly as I’d purchased them. I guess I was one of the original ‘fast fashion’ crew. I would wear something once, or perhaps twice, before deciding it was finished. That’s the trouble with being photographed regularly, clothes need to be worn just a few times. I found myself addicted to Dolce & Gabbana one week, Etro the next. And as one designer became my favourite, the last usually went to charity, or to friends who wanted certain pieces. My shopping habit, like my life, was out of control. Dressing for dinner, I stared into my wardrobes, full of clothes that I rarely wear. Since relocating to Mar-

PRETTY CHILLED: It’s a beach life. bella, I tend to wear shorts most of the time, and polo shirts, all of the time. Beach life, is a pretty chilled existence. It made me think, why do we need so much stuff? Life in a place like Marbella is all about excess. Every second car is a Rolls-Royce, 20 grand handbags are considered normal, Balthazars of vintage Champagne at lunch, why not? But really, what it’s all about? I think lockdown has changed us all, in so many ways. I now have no desire to shop for things I once felt I needed. In fact, I’ve realised that we must slow things down. The demand for designer goods, may be delivered rather differently as we move forward. Certain houses have even stopped production. What will those with limitless credit cards do to pass the days? One idea, is to stop and think. If you shop properly, your choices will last. If you buy quality, over disposable trends, you will hold on to them, and they will be timeless. We must remember that life is cyclical, and everything comes around again. The next generation will feel they have discovered it. Let them. And as life keeps going, this current strange phase shall pass. It’s how we move forward that counts, and what we count as important that matters.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I don’t know if other people find this strange or if it’s just me! I shop mostly at Mercadona in La Cala where I live. When we went into lockdown and were only able to go out for food and medication I found Mercadona very good with the rules. When going there during the lockdown there was only one person supposed to shop per household. Before you could go into the store there was someone to make sure you had gloves and you were keeping your distance. This also seems to be the case at Aldi. In Mercadona someone was at the lifts making sure only one person at a time used each of the two lifts going in and out. Also, the staff at the tills were stopping people from getting close while putting their shopping on the belts and paying for it. All very good and well organised to me. I really can’t understand why this is not in place now the store is so much busier than then! They now seem to let whole families in at once as happened before lockdown, this makes it so hard to distance. I think two people per household is enough as it is not a very big store. Also, there are no staff telling people about the rules regarding the lifts or to keep their distance. I have found the customers are left to do this. Surely during this busy time, it should be there are more staff doing these things. After all, we are still in a pandemic! Hopefully, it won’t be long till we get back to going shopping with just the locals. Would like to know if anyone else thinks this way or could it just be me? Yours sincerely June Butler

OUR VIEW From loved to loathed ISN’T it about time we cut Harry and Meghan some slack? If we don’t agree with what they are doing then just leave them alone. As a young couple with many advisors surely they have all the interference they need. Maybe they just want to do their own thing and create their own lives as many young couples do. Also, if you have an inheritance from our Mother, Father, wealthy Granny, why should they not accept their generosity? In the beginning, it was the stuff of fairy tales, a girl from a far-off land meets a handsome foreign prince and falls deeply in love. After a whirlwind romance they marry… however, the evil press is intent on destroying them. Sure, Meghan came from a dysfunctional family who she has had problems with and is estranged from. Are the Royal family normal? I think not. Surely the world now is not so judgemental as the people in those fairy tales? A Prince cannot marry an entertainer, a girl from a troubled family, with less money or even... a different colour of skin? Have we not progressed as a people to celebrate diversity, to applaud the underdog, to believe in true love? Any man would protect his wife and lash out against those who tried to belittle her, hurt her or bad mouth her. Why should that mean that he is under the thumb or less of a man? Surely that makes him more of a man? Let the couple move to California if that is what they wish, they are doing you no harm. If you wish to see the back of them and only have bad to speak of them now, here is your chance to rid yourself of the energy it takes you to feel so angry or jealous or hard done by.

Silent majority Dear Euro Weekly News, This is the first time I have ever responded to anything in the Euro Weekly, but the letter from ‘angry old Brit’ Alan Doig was so exactly what I had already said that I felt I had to respond. Your ‘survey’ on Leapy Lee was a complete waste of time. You say 74 per cent, but 74 per cent of what? The number of people who bothered to respond of course, and who would respond? The people who agree with Leapy Lee, who are quite obviously in agreement with his obnoxious views. It is sad that a section of the Brits, who seem to make up his bigoted followers, are being represented by you as typical of the rest of us, who are not racist, not narrow-minded, and definitely not in favour of leaving Europe. This nasty little troll obviously loves to air his views without any criticism, but for heaven’s sake don’t think that we (the silent majority) are in agreement. We live here because we want to be here, and consider ourselves to be Europeans. Does anybody know who Leapy Lee is? It is not clear why his views should be put forward, but I wonder if it is a deliberate way of invoking a response for your letters column. Bit muddled Dear Euro Weekly News, Barry Duke seems to have become a bit muddled in this week’s column. He starts out by savaging Norman Tebbit and Tebbit’s remark about his father ‘getting on his bike’ to look for work in the 30’s. Then he moves on to condemn the present UK government and the ‘grotesque nanny state.’ Barry is appalled and believes ‘folk should take personal responsibility,’ ‘nowadays self-control and the exercise of willpower are outdated concepts,’ ‘millions have been conditioned to believe that it’s the job of bureaucrats to manipulate every aspect of their lives.’ In other words, Barry believes in personal responsibility, self-control, freedom of the individual and minimal state intervention in the lives of private individuals. All good, solid Tory values. Sounds like Barry has a lot more in common with Norman Tebbit’s dad - than he might care to admit. Sincerely, Jim Shanks

And was Red Riding in fact the sister of Robin? But it’s not just the names of people that keep me awake at night. The Spanish drink their ‘cafe ole’ and wish each other ‘feliz ano’. In

French restaurants they order ‘fruits de merde’ or ‘gigolo d’agneau’, while the English prefer roast saddle of bicycle or snake-and-pygmy pie. The Germans love their ‘Pantoffelpuree’ and ‘Penatencremsuppe’. In the field of sport, the cricket commentator, Henry Blowfly, is now 80 years old while Monty Parasol is retired for the time being and Leigh Halfpenalty is still scoring points for Wales. Shabby and Messy shone together for

Barcelona while Newcastle has its Tsoon Army. Even in the world of art we have the movie Acropolis Now, together with Great Expectorations, Wagner’s The Flying Dustman, the Bugger’s Opera and the Turnip Prize. After a few drinks, or when we are feeling more young at heart than usual, we tend to invent names. Samuel Bowe’s Mum and Dad may have a warped sense of humour and perhaps the parents of Robert Slay like a good laugh every 20 minutes too. How To Cope Through Difficult Times

you wake up one morning in a bad mood and consistently think of that bad mood, you will feel angry, frustrated, grumpy. This may lead to the actions of shouting at family members, becoming impatient with work colleagues, whilst mentally beating yourself up over your behaviour. Depending on the issue that each individual is dealing with, there are several ways you can approach this and learn how to change your way of thinking and your coping mechanism. Write Rather Than Think The first step I take with all of my clients is journalling. Write down your current negative thought. What is the situation that has caused this thought? Do you have any physical evidence that

makes this thought true? Writing down your actual thoughts helps you recognise and name it without judgement. You may even notice that your painful feelings disappear after a while. ‘This too shall pass’ can become words to live by. You Can’t Control A Person or Situation Outside Of You This is a statement I live by daily. You are only in control of you! Whilst you cannot control a situation or person outside of you, you can control the emotions that you attach to it. Do not dismiss or ignore your emotion as that will not make the pain go away. Acknowledge the distress and accept it as your present reality. Accepting does not mean you like it, it only means that you can put

these unpleasant thoughts to the front and centre of your mind, rather than allowing them to float unconsciously under the surface. Be Your Own Best Friend Eighty per cent of our thoughts are negative, we can be really mean to ourselves. Ask yourself, is that the way you would treat your best friend? Self-love is so important. Everything starts with how you feel about yourself, so, the next time you punish yourself over a situation you cannot control, ask yourself this important question. Would I speak to my best friend in the same way? Do The Things You Love It is a fact that there will be situations in everyone’s life that may cause you difficult times, but, that doesn’t mean you have to allow

it to control every aspect of your life. When these situations occur, remember to do the things you love and reach for the belief. Talk out loud if it helps, ‘I love the warmth of the sun on my face’, ‘reading books makes me feel relaxed’, ‘I love the smell of fresh coffee’, these examples will amend your way of thinking and will encourage you to look for the positive. Summer shaving SUMMER is in full swing, and whilst there is nothing wrong with a little body hair, there’s something about wearing a breezy dress with silky smooth legs that makes you feel so confident. Frequent shaving can cause all sorts of problems though, including pesky ingrown hairs, rashes and razor burns. Three simple ingredients come together to give you soft, glowing skin. The scrub recipe below is wonder ful for before and after shaving. Enjoy it on the tougher parts of your body: arms, legs, elbows, feet, etc, but do avoid sensitive areas such as your face and areas that may be affected by acne. Ingredients: Granulated sugar Olive oil Fresh lemon Method: Make this scrub immediately before use, (it’s

best not to make large batches and saving due to using fresh lemon.) Put sugar in a small plastic bowl and add enough olive oil to saturate the sugar without excess oil floating over the sugar. Next, quarter an entire fresh lemon and squeeze all the citrusy goodness into the mixture, give it a stir and you’re good to go. For the actual exfoliation be sure to soak your skin in warm water in the

bath or shower, then scrub thoroughly, rinse away scrub, shave with desired foam or gel and then scrub and rinse once more. The olive oil will soften the sur face of your skin leaving it glowing, the sugar will remove the dead skin without drying it out, unlike salt. The citric acid will aid with inflammation from rashes. A quick word of warning … The olive oil makes the tub slippery.

For yourself but not by yourself: what I have learned along the way (Warning, this article may be triggering for some readers)

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I STARTED having difficult or should I say different thoughts at a young age that at the time seemed ‘normal’ to me as I knew no different ... now looking back I know I was definitely wired differently. I can clearly remember back to being in school and sitting in class and drifting off into my own world ... next thing I know, I had one of these drawing compasses in my hand digging my initials into my thigh until I drew blood, I clearly remember the feeling of freedom, control and satisfaction. Odd, I know, but true! I vividly remember walking home from school at about 13 years old and having visions of me running across the train tracks and what would happen if I did, would I hurt myself? Would I die? Would I be missed? What would happen? I didn’t know that other people thought like me, and that the thoughts that were running through my head were not right. In this last year I have finally learned to manage my condition alongside medication. Sometimes changing from one medication to another but also becoming more relaxed about its changes as I get to know what they mean and know that (most of the time) I can control them. So here’s what I’ve learned: • Don’t hide from it: get to know your condition from research as well as the behaviours you associate with depression, mania and overall bipolar. If you feel something is wrong, admit it. • Don’t hide behind it: mania is the very worst of you but you are still you. Whilst you learn to control

your condition you may have limited control over your behaviour but your actions are still your responsibility. If you catch yourself saying ‘I don’t have to do this because I’m depressed or mentally ill’ get someone to give you a swift kick in the backside. Distancing yourself from responsibility is also distancing yourself from reality. • Know yourself: Get to know your triggers. This is probably the hardest part. You need to start paying attention to what triggers mania or depression for you . • Love yourself: forgive yourself for mistakes or ‘bad behaviour’ instead of beating yourself up, resolve to do it differently next time and move on. • For yourself but not by yourself: Each person has to learn their own way to control their condition. It’s incredibly easy to recognise other people with bipolar when you recognise the behaviours in yourself, but it’s very obvious when they are struggling. There is nothing better than recognising your fellow bipolar person and sharing stories with each other. • Use your family and friends! Help them to understand, explain to them your triggers but also how to help you manage your moods. Often friends and family feel helpless when it comes to mental health not knowing how to deal with it, what’s appropriate to say or not. Love Ms Bipolar x

POST-LOCKDOWN BABY BOOM & DIVORCE TSUNAMI

WITH both a baby boom and divorce tsunami predicted postl o c k d o w n , w i l l t h e re a l s o b e a publishing explosion along the lines of: ‘My Lockdown Novel’, in which ‘I discover the Real Meaning of Life’? The crisis probably won’t be quite as fruitful for political memoirs and diaries, though. ‘Monday: stayed i n d o o r s . Tu e s d a y : s t a y e d i n doors. Wednesday...’ And sales of classic novels are up, many featuring tales of plagues, viruses and diseases. And people are reading more as a consequence of lockdown: a third of older adults and half of 18 to 24-year-olds. But whatever the genre, authors often face the risk of unwittingly basing a fictional character on someone identifiable. The crime writer Simon Brett, who recently published his 107th book: The Clutter Corpse (I’m already on my 10th, so still a way to go!) had this problem with his very first: Cast, in Order of Disappearance, which he set in Goring-onThames with a victim called Marius.

However, the publisher worried that the actor Marius Goring might believe this referred to him and sue, so asked Brett to change the location. One of Brett’s novelist friends similarly had to make a late change to a character’s name, using ‘find and replace’ to change all Davids to Kevins. “This worked fine,” Brett says, “until readers got to the point when someone talked about visiting Florence and seeing Michelangelo’s famous statue of Kevin.” I had the same experience with an early novel. I likewise had to change a character’s name, using ‘find and replace’ to change all Joans to Beryls (don’t ask!). Like in Brett’s case, this worked well until you got to the bit about a key character’s trip to Paris and coming across in the Place des

Hissing cockroaches: Pests or pets?

BARRY DUKE IT started as a fact-checking exercise that the Internet assumed was a quest for an apartment full of monster cockroaches. I began getting pop-up ads for hissing Madagascar roaches hours after I began reading up on the critters, something I was prompted to do by passage in ‘The Web’. Jonathan Kellerman’s thriller describes a katsaridaphobic character running out of her bathroom screaming after it had been invaded by giant roaches. I was sceptical, mainly because I’d seen some pretty big cockroaches in South Africa, but none that were three inches long. So I did a quick check, and sure enough, Kellerman’s description was spot on. Within an hour a window popped up on my computer screen, notifying me that I could buy from Amazon ‘a complete Kindle guide to the care of America’s favourite

online searches took that search as a signal that I had a burning desire to populate our apartment with the bugs, and more and more ads began appearing. One, from a company called Fluker’s Farm in Louisiana, was offering them in two sizes: juveniles for $1.45 (€1.22) each and adults for $1.95 (€1.65). Fluker’s informed

me that ‘Hissing cockroaches are often kept as pets … Hissers have a relatively long life span and, under optimal conditions, they can live up to five years!’ Then up popped an eBay ad for ‘a brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged’ roach for $2.50 (€2.11) plus $27.90 (€23.56) shipping.’ Just when I thought these

topped the list of the weirdest pop-ups ever created, along came one for Donald Trump bandages. The algorithms that track one’s browsing had somehow made a connection between a benign and harmless insect and a repulsive, brutish and very stupid life-form. For a moment I was puzzled. Then I remembered doing a search during the Covid-19 lockdown period for adhesive plasters (‘curitas’ in Spanish) after I’d cut a finger slicing carrots, and could find none in the apartment. The Trump bandages are being sold by an outfit called the Patriot Depot for £8.95 (€9.90) for 20. The blurb says ‘Who better to put on a bandage but Trump, the man who’s been healing the wounds inflicted by Obama’s presidency.’ Don’t rush to put in an order. They are bound to plummet in price if the Orange Menace is exterminated by Joe Biden in November. Something good just HAS to come out of 2020.

Standing out from the crowd HAVING been scribbling about cars for many years I have seen many car companies launch, and more than a few disappear, and can recall Kia’s entry into the UK. Their cars have risen steadily from cheap and cheerful bargains to stylish and well-made cars that compare and frequently beat their European counterparts. One of Kia’s newer entrants has taken an idea that Mercedes Benz started with the CLS and moved things to a more affordable level with its ProCeed, mixing four-door practicality and sweeping estate car looks. Kia calls the result a shooting brake; thereby recounting a term from the early days of motoring, with echoes of landed gentry and Purdey guns on the grouse moor before heading for dinner in a car that mixes looks and practicality. The ProCeed certainly

ROAD TEST by Mark Slack does that as externally it progressively changes as your eye travels rearward from standard car to shooting brake. Inside, even the entry level model has the look and feel of a more expensive model, with both passengers and their luggage generously catered for in terms of space. The rather elegantly angled rear hatch opens on to a load area with a generous 594 litres of carrying capacity. However, the trade-off is that sloping tailgate means rear vision is like looking through a letterbox, and a pretty slim one too. The range starts at £24,335 (€26,933) for a GTLine ProCeed with 138bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox and tops out at £29,095 (€32,201) with the same engine in an even more thoroughly specified GT-Line S

with seven-speed t gearbox. The lead-in 1.4 petrol model passes the benchmark 60 mph in 8.8 seconds and will carry on to a top speed of 130 mph with a 45.6mpg average. It’s willing engine pulls this biggish machine along with verve and in impressive quietness. Although my test model was black with a distinctly black interior it was lifted by aluminium interior highlights and light grey diamond stitch cloth centre panels on the seating. So the ProCeed not only felt quality it looked it too. An array of standard equipment stretches from heated seats and steering wheel to auto lights, wipers and dimming mirrors. On top of that there is dual zone air conditioning, cruise control, powered, heated and folding door mirrors and a plethora of safety kit. It’s a package that stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons.
