Last Friday, August 14 according to El País, Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa announced that all establishments, such as bars and restaurants would have to close at 1am, with no new patrons allowed to enter from midnight onwards. And nightclubs, discos and similar establishments have been ordered to close for the foreseeable future. Another measure announced by Illa was a blanket ban across Spain of smoking in public if a twometre distance cannot be maintained between a smoker and other people. Illa also said that bars and restaurants would need to guarantee a minimum safe

The maximum number of diners will be limited to 10 at a table or gathering. The new measures were announced after Euro Weekly News was accused of scaremongering last week after it carried a report in good faith on the EWN website regarding Spain’s Covid-19 plans for the immediate future should the rise of new cases
continue to escalate. The report, which said that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez was set to lockdown Spain once again from Friday, September 18, was published after a chance meeting with a freelance reporter and two gentleman who identified themselves as government bodies. Government officials later challenged the veracity of the report, but would not say what was wrong with it, choosing no further com-
ment as a reply. As a result of that report, EWN also found itself at the sharp end of a concerted social media attack. People insisted that it was ‘fake news’ that would exacerbate problems already making life difficult for business owners. The attacks were made both professionally and personally to members of staff. We at EWN strive for accuracy at all times and share people’s anger and frustration, especially if we ourselves are misinformed, particularly in these rapidly changing and extremely distressing times. That said, we would be
failing in our duty of care to our readers if we were to underplay the seriousness of the pandemic in Spain. It is far from over. Health Minister Illa was quoted in the El País report as saying: ‘There has been a growing number of outbreaks in recent weeks.’ Illa was speaking to journalists after having held an emergency meeting with health officials from Spain’s regions, which have been in charge of their own coronavirus measures ever since the State of Alarm, implemented by the central government back in March, came to an end.
His press conference was held after the latest figures released by the Health Ministry last Thursday showed a worsening situation. Spain’s regions reported a total of 2,953 new Covid19 infections detected in the previous 24 hours, and added a total of 7,550 confirmed cases from previous dates. Not since the worst moments of the crisis in Spain, back in April, have infection rates been so high. We have to work together in unity to ensure the continuation of our lives in Spain. Skin Cancer Health Station A NEW health station in Cala Bosque has been designed to help in the protection against skin cancer. The health station has a sun traffic light that measures the intensity of ultraviolet radiation, a defibrillator, a shaded rest or breastfeeding area, an emergency button connected to 112 and a charging
station. Information is available to the public through a digital and interactive touch screen system with an integrated camera that tells you what your skin phototype is, and gives updates from the Spanish Association against Cancer.

Brits Choose Cartagena RESTRICTIONS in the wake of Covid-19 have not slowed down the a m o u n t o f U K re s i dents choosing to settle in the municipality of Cartagena. In a statement from the councillor responsible for Statistics and Population, Alejandra Gutiérrez, he indicated that, “throughout this last year 2020, the number of British registered in the municipality has increased by over 200 people.” However, despite the rise in UK residents this year, since the beginning of the Brexit process by the British gover nment in 2016, there has actually been a progressive decline in its population in Cartagena,

Editors of British tabloids need to be called out each time they portray Benidorm as the ‘bad boy’ of Spanish resorts. Heaven knows there are thousands who care passionately enough about the manner in which it is portrayed to challenge this sort of negative reporting. I know that such people exist because I am one of them, and on numerous occasions have
blasted off emails berating news desks for false or negative reports about the place that I love. I also know that anger can be badly misdirected. For example Euro Weekly News last week found itself under attack on social media after it carried a report about the latest Covid-19 measures being implemented in Spain.
The report - headed ‘Spain Set To LOCKDOWN Friday September 18 with Three Phase System closing borders with France and Portugal’ - was instantly dismissed as ‘fake news’ that would only serve to worsen severe economic downturns in Spanish resorts. Such was the anger over the report that one enterprising local even began advertising
Council Jobs for Mazarron Rider 10 Unemployed UNEMPLOYED people in Torrevieja will be given a boost as the council announces plans to give 10 people employment into different departments within the local authority. Domingo Paredes, councillor for Development and Employment of the Torrevieja Council, has launched the EMCORP 2020 insertion programme, in order to promote the regeneration of employment within the area. This programme will involve the hiring of a total of 10 unemployed people, who are at least 30 years old and with the required qualifications, to provide them with work experience which improves their employability. Over the next six months; six social workers, one architect and three administrative technicians will be incorporated full-time in different departments of the city council, such as Social Welfare or Projects and Public Works. These contracts will be made thanks to a grant of €248,323,

AT the beginning of August the UK’s Daily Express carried this clickbait headline: ‘Brits ‘scared to go out’ as local beach resorts turn into ‘Benidorm on steroids’.’ It was a report about large crowds converging on Cornish resorts, and the apprehension locals felt about huge influxes of strangers. The paper said: ‘Speaking to the BBC Claire Harris, a 37year-old St Ives’ resident, said she’d banned her children from the town’s harbour and main shopping areas due to the number of people. She claimed the influx had left her “too scared to go food shopping” for fear of picking up the virus.’ The report itself contained no mention WHATSOVER of the popular Spanish resort, so why was the word ‘Benidorm’ used in the headline and intro in such a gratuitously offensive manner?
‘boycott EWN’ t-shirts and face masks! The idea that a paper would deliberately print fake news to harm the economy of a country in which it operates is beyond ludicrous. If fury has to be expressed - and I really believe that it does - it should be directed at the bureaucrats who, right now are playing us like fiddles by arbitrarily introducing new Covid-19 regulations, and insisting on moving the goalposts every few hours or so. This sort of game playing has in the past and will continue in the future to perplex both journalists and the public. Confusing briefings by government officials can only result in the inadvertent spread of misinformation at a time when clarity is most needed. All this confusion has to end soon if any shred of sanity is to be rescued from the wreckage of 2020.

Composting Centres GREAT news for the environment as more sustainable plans and initiatives have been launched in Benijófar and Cox, municipalities of the Vega Baja, with the introduction of composting centres and spaces for the storage of compost and structuring material. In an effort promote the selective collection of waste, the Alicante Provincial Council, has been working on more sustainable projects within the environment sector since 2018. The provincial Deputy for the Environment, Miguel Ángel Sánchez, explained the benefits of community composting centres, “The creation of composting centres is especially useful in towns with a smaller population, since it entails an estimated reduction of 30 per cent in the frequency of collec-

waste; seven-litre buckets and compost bags will be distributed to houses who want to participate in the project. The municipalities are also provided with a box of the ‘Composting Manual,’ a publication that explains how the compost bin works and how to solve any problems, should they arise.
IN a show of great support, an aid plan is set to be launched by Torrevieja Council to help those suffering from the economic impact of Covid-19. The financial boost totals €211,924 and is being made available by the Alicante Provincial Council, with aid being set to a maximum of €2,000 per applicant. The councillor for Development, Employment and Local Development of the Torrevieja City Council, Domingo Paredes, has announced that during the last week of August, the application period for subsidies will be published and opened for self-employed workers and small companies. Domingo Paredes added that “in order for interested persons to prepare the documentation, it will be available on the ADL website, www.adl-torrevieja.es.” Although the submission deadline is expected to open in the last week of August 2020,” he concluded. Those interested in applying for the grant are kindly requested to read the terms and conditions in their entirety.
Archaeological Heritage Improvements
HERITAGE: Major works set to improve archaeological sites. SUMMER projects totalling more than €86,000 have been agreed and will contribute towards the significant improvements of Archaeological Heritage sites across Cartagena. The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, who heads the Archaeological Heritage Area, has been busy securing contracts for the works on various projects during the summer months. Works on the Caballero del Cerro de Despeñaperros Wall were the last to be awarded, meaning that maintenance can finally be carried out on the section of this wall, which is located in the heart of Cartagena, on which the Castle of San José sits. Works are set to cost around €80,000 upon completion. The mayor has also secured works for the site of Molino de las Piedras and the restoration of three sculptures that surround the Pedreño Pantheon, in the Remedios cemetery. These works represent the mayor’s commitment to protection, and enhancement, of sites and historic buildings of the municipality. “These buildings are just a sample of our rich history that we must respect and value, and by being restored we will be able to enjoy true architectural jewels of our municipality,” concluded Ana Belén Castejón.

Projects such as the ‘Neuroscience in Motion’ project, which enables all students to carry out sports activity at the beginning of the educational day in order to stimulate the body and mind, have been considered a huge success. APPEAL: Bone marrow needed by young woman seeking a transplant. A YOUNG woman from Albatera has publicly asked for help in the search for bone marrow as she bravely battles Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Samanda Rocamora, who urgently needs a bone marrow transplant, appeared at a press conference to spread the word of her appeal, which has now gained some much-needed traction on social network platforms. “I need a bone marrow transplant and I need it urgently because time is against me, so I need people to come to donate in a massive way to increase my chances,” explained the young woman, who added a heartfelt statement saying, “many people need a donor, I don’t know if I will find one, but I have to try and if not, at least we help other people to get the donor that they need so much.” Samanda explained that “The bone marrow donation is simply a blood transfusion, it is not a painful process, the marrow regen-
erates, so they can donate many times.” To donate marrow, you only need to go to the place of donation with your ID, be between 18 and 40 years old and have no personal history of heart, liver, autoimmune, infectiouscontagious or neoplastic diseases.

Age Concern Not a fair deal Follow-Up EURO WEEKLY NEWS spoke to Maureen Payne, of Age Concern Costa Blanca, about the effects Covid-19 has had on the charity, and whether they have made any plans for the future. “The lockdown was very difficult for our beneficiaries, the majority who live alone,” explained Maureen, “normally they would be transported, by our vehicles, to our Day Centre to meet with friends and socialise.” Adding that “once the lockdown came into force, they found themselves isolated again. To relieve some of this we called them on a regular basis to make sure they were well and safe.” Going the extra mile for their beneficiaries, Maureen told EWN that “some of our volunteers did shopping for those who could not get out and our telephone was manned during the lockdown so that we could continue to supply mobility equipment when requested.” With Covid-19 cases appearing to be on the rise again, Maureen honestly stated, “we hesitate to make too many plans for future events until we see how the situation works out.” As we recently announced, the Age Concern Centre in La Siesta is set to return on September 1 fol-

This year, the Covid-19 crisis has obliged town and city halls throughout the region to cancel them, bringing multimillion losses as visitors stay away. That was the case for Elche, which 500,000 people visited during the centuries-old Mystery Play and the Nit de l’Alba events in 2019. This year, Elche’s mayor Carlos Gonzalez calculates that having to suspend the fiestas will lose €50 million for the city and its businesses. Xativa (Valencia), whose Fallas fiestas had to be cancelled in March when Covid19 began to spread, also had to write off its Fira d’Agost, a fair that has been held since obtaining Jaume I’s royal charter in 1250. Xativa’s Fiestas councillor Pedro Aldavero estimated that cancelling the fair has

Brave and big-hearted Oscar THE 11-year-old from Denia is walking the Camino de Santiago - more than 300 kilometres - with ever-supportive mum Niamh, to raise as much cash as possible for a sensory garden at the La Xara Occupational and Day Centre. “Two years ago, when Oscar was nine years old, he asked if I would take him on a journey. He asked if he could walk the Camino Santiago,” said Niamh, adding: “That’s not just like going for any old walk, it’s a pilgrimage!” In October 2018 and October 2019 determined Oscar covered 470kms of his incredible challenge. The plan was that in October 2020 Oscar would tackle the final 300-plus kilometres of the camino from Leon to Santiago de Compostela. “However, as we all know, 2020 hasn’t quite gone to plan,” explained
mum-of-three Niamh, a well-known singer on the Costa Blanca. To avoid Oscar missing more school after months of lockdown, mum and son hatched ‘a crazier plan.’ Oscar will walk his final 300km of the Camino Santiago through the tricky tracks and trails of Galicia in the very early mornings of August, having started his trek on Friday, August 14. Niamh said: “Oscar’s fundraiser has been incredible. Truly heartwarming. We really can’t thank you all enough. And donations continue to fly in. It’s not too late. But, right now, the focus of our mum/son duo must be to simply walk. “To cover 300km in less than two weeks. To keep each other positive and to take time to bond further and deeply appreciate our surroundings.” Previously Oscar cam-
paigned for sponsorship when he set himself the challenge two years ago, and with the help of the local community and generous friends of the family, he was able to buy a much needed electric hoist for the local La Pedrera rehabilitation centre AND he also scraped together the money to donate a new pair of trainers for all 60-plus residents at the men’s shelter in Gandia. And having recently visited the Occupational and Day Care centre in La Xara and seeing first-hand the “vitality and importance of this place,” Oscar instantly decided that if he could raise a bit of money from his walk, then this was where he’d like to direct it. “He loved the happy vibe and walked away so certain that they deserve ALL our support,” said Niamh.
Oscar asked Director of the Centre, Ana, “How can I help?” and she explained that they often dream about installing a sensory garden adapted for special needs. With a budget tighter than ever, practical priorities come first, but Oscar is determined to help - and you can too. “There’s been so much negativity recently. It’s time to take back the joy and the sharing and the caring that a community’s unity can create, said Niamh urging the public "from your heart” to help make the project a success. And it’s not just cash donations that can help make the sensory garden a reality.

Reach out in crisis IN all its nine and a half years of establishment, never has the Reach Out charity been in such dire need of help! Reach Out was set up to feed and clothe the homeless and help them rehabilitate back into society, as well as provide food for the poorest people of Torrevieja. However, the charity is under threat of closure due to the impact of Covid-19 and the lack of customers to their charity shops and the inability to have fundraising events. “Lack of visitors to Spain, recession, unemployment,
and movement restrictions have led to a drastic reduction in money raised,” said Davy Young, President of the charity. “To keep the homeless centre open on a weekly basis we have to raise €1,500 weekly to provide meals to around 60 homeless and pay wages and utilities. We also provide food provisions and hygiene products to more than 45 families who struggle from day to day and are barely existing”, he added. “We have insufficient funds to carry on beyond November and we are desperate for volunteers who can help in the shop(s), office, the kitchen, washing and shower facilities, replacement clothing and essentials such as toiletries. Appointment System AS previously reported, the Ribera Salud group are currently planning on building a multipurpose sports medicine and social centre set to be annexed to the new health centre being built in Orihuela Costa. In what is set to be a busy time for the group, the improvements they are overseeing with the appointment system will considerably reduce response times, allowing for a faster and more efficient service. The telephone system has already been upgraded with the aim of improving patient care in the health centres, enabling individuals to better manage their medical and nursing appointments. tinction of dipteran. The works represent a total expense for the department of around €70,000 and services will include control of those areas, or foci, where a plague or excessive accumulation of dipterans is developing.

Drinking in the Streets SUMMER drinking has risen in the streets of Cartagena with the police being forced to hand out big penalties. Fifty-six penalties, which have mostly been given to young people, are said to be down to venue closures due to Covid-19, or the subsequent earlier closures since reopening. BUSTED: Drugs house raided and cannabis seized. THE alleged perpetrators of a cannabis growing and distribution operation are a couple, said to be the president and vice president of a cannabis association in Torrevieja, consisting of a 40-year-old man of Chilean nationality and a Spanish woman, 32. Upon a raid of the house, the police found in every room they examined, various types of drugs (marihuana, hashish, cocaine and amphetamine), all in different forms (plants, buds, oil, resin, raw, in doses or in tablets), with the highlight being two marihuana crops growing inside cupboard greenhouses and plants on the interior patio being entertained by music said to promote better growth. The full extent of the items recovered from the house were: 160 marihuana plants, 400 grams of marihuana buds, 165 grams of hashish oil, 160 grams of hashish resin, 125 grams of hashish, 15 grams of cocaine, one dose of amphetamine, €1,400 in cash and one gun. The two were imprisoned.

REDUCTION: Sports participation in Torrevieja reduced by up to 50 per cent. TORREVIEJA City Council has drastically reduced the price to participate in sports, by offering up to 50 per cent off. Councillor for Sports, Diana Box, made the announcement as a result of sport facility users not being able to enjoy the use of the rental facilities during the lockdown. The announcement also sees money re-
turned to those who have paid for memberships without being able to use the facilities, or having them extended to cover the time missed. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, the suspension of public shows, sports and leisure activities affected the possibility of anyone using sports facilities and subsequently losing money on
any payments made in advance for services, such as payments for sports schools, gym memberships, sports facilities memberships. The announcement also stated the enrolment of Municipal Sports Schools would reduce their public prices by 50 per cent. These discounts were announced to run until October.

Following their promotion to the Second Division, Cartagena City Council will contribute around €150,000 to FC Cartagena, as works to the stadium need to be carried out. Works are estimated to cost around €600,000, according to Deputy Mayor and Head of the Sports Area, Noelia Arroyo. The president of FC Cartagena, Francisco Belmonte, has advanced that the full contribution from municipal government will be allocated to works on the stadium, so that the total sum of works will have a budget of €750,000. Noelia Arroyo also stressed that the agreement between the club and the government consists of “the municipal aid remaining in a municipal facility for the enjoyment of all and, in

GETTING THINGS DONE: Mayor of Cartagena hard at work. THE mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, has announced plans for a much-needed beach cleanup, at the recent Inter-Administrative Forum meeting. Following a previous meeting held in July, the mayor of Cartagena already proposed to take a step forward and initiate the relevant studies to carry out the removal of mud and sludge in the towns of the Mar Menor. An act that has always been the responsibility of the government of Spain. The Cartagena City Council, along with the consistories, have made it clear they feel the power in this matter be-
longs to the State, but a solution to the situation of beaches, such as Los Urrutias and Los Nietos, cannot be delayed any further with the situation only getting worse. “We are very clear that if we do not do it, no one will come to do it, so we are going to start working on the report that makes it possible
and we will see later who assumes the cost of these much-needed works,” said the mayor. Hydraulic investments are being made to improve the sanitation network in various riverside towns to alleviate the possible spills that occur due to the poor condition of these infrastructures.
Rojales Robber now Arrested A THIRTY-THREE-yearold Spanish man was arrested after alleged-
ly committing multiple robberies in Rojales. The Investigation Area of the Guardia Civil of Almoradí, finally apprehended the man they believe to be the perpetrator of the robberies of five homes and a commercial premise. This follow investigations into crimes that were committed during the quarantine phase of Covid-19. The criminal activity of the man was ended after being recognised by police, thanks to the analysis of the recordings obtained from security cameras, located at a point near one of the robberies. He was released and set to return before the judicial authority.

Youth Employment Training TRAINING: Helpful new courses for young job seekers.

ANOTHER excellent initiative has been launched in Orihuela with the announcement of several employment training courses. The Youth Council, headed by the mayor, Mar Ezcurra, revealed a new programme of free training courses which will take place until September 17. The sessions, to be delivered in the multipurpose room of the María Moliner Municipal Library, are focused on being “very practical and visual courses intended and oriented to the search for employment,” commented Mar Ezcurra. The mayor is looking to encourage young people to enrol on these courses to
learn how to harness their own resources and skills when trying to, in most cases, secure their first job. The talks are set to give job seekers new skills, and develop new strategies and actions, in order to achieve the best possible start into life in their chosen profession. The courses will be face-to-face, at the María Moliner Municipal Library in Orihuela, with all the established sanitary and capacity control measures (maximum 20 people), but they can also be held online, via streaming. Forced to Close AN establishment on Torrevieja’s ‘golden mile’ has been forced to close due to one of its staff testing positive for
Covid-19, a representative for the 100 Montaditos chain announced. The announcement came on the heels of
“hoaxes and bad disclosures about the situation of our premises,” according to the representative. The franchise, located on Calle Ramón Gallud, has asked the rest of their staff to quarantine themselves at home and have ensured they have taken all the appropriate measures through the guidance of the health authorities, consultants and occupational risks, “taking extreme measures of disinfection and precaution in the premises.” The establishment also voiced their appreciation to the “calls we received and the encouragement and the expressions of affection.”

ENVIRONMENT: Changes will hopefully help with less pollution and odours. ONE of the busiest areas in Cabezo de Torres is set for a face lift with the mayor of Murcia committed to improvements. José Ballesta assured residents within the area, where hundreds meet daily, that “we are committed to the urban renewal of the entire environment with actions that will directly benefit its 13,680 neighbours.” The food market now features a new 25-metre mural, by the Murcian artist Ángel Toren, which will now have five underground rubbish and recycling containers installed. The containers are designed to collect both organic waste and materials that can be recycled (cardboard and plastic).
Among the advantages of this action, the underground containers are less noisy when unloading and offer more space for pedestrians. They also generate less odours and are cleaner. Other works to be carried out include the installation of two bollards on each of the platforms of the underground containers to prevent vehicles from parking on them, as well as information panels to indicate the times for depositing rubbish, collection of furniture and appliances. An injection of €127,500 by the city council has allocated to three public spaces in Cabezo de Torres: the Day Stays centre, the Centre for Conciliation of Work and Family Life and the Plaza de Abastos.

After passing mandatory PCR tests, the players finally stepped back onto the indoor pitch following a five month break due to the health crisis. The Club’s board is now waiting for news from the RFEF after the announcement of a possible delay to the scheduled start of the new season, with the
season due to commence competition on September 5. The Board of Directors is extremely concerned about the economic damage that Covid-19 will have on the number of companies willing to support Women’s Futsal. Antonia González, who chairs the club, said “unfortunately in times of crisis or complications, companies first stop supporting women, it is something automatic, and thus we will find it hard to be able to reach higher levels of advertising impact. OVER the years the Costa del Sol has been home to many entertainers and EWN was lucky enough to speak exclusively to Sheena Cochrane who lives in Mijas Costa and was a professional dancer who managed to travel the world performing with some massive names in the process. Sheena has released a book named ‘Exit Stage right’ which is available as an e-book on Kindle and paperback on Amazon. “I began dancing when my mother suggested I do something to use up my excess energy. I wasn’t the best at school and decided maybe I could make my future from dancing. “I was a day student at the Royal Ballet but realising that there were many more girls better than me, I decided that I would be better using my talent as a means to travel the world.” And so, she did, she travelled to the Middle East, the Far East, the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, South America and many more. From there Sheena became one of the famous 60’s Tiller Girls and would ap-

Whilst there she crossed paths with people such as Cary Grant, Jerry Lewis, Liberace, Shirley MacLaine, Cher, Tony Bennett, Paul Anka, to name but a few. She also appeared as an extra in the film ‘Chisum’ with John Wayne, which was filmed in Durango, Mexico. When asked why she gave up such an exciting lifestyle she said “It’s a young profession and I gave up professional dancing in 1981. I was given the option of becoming a dance teacher, but I enjoyed dancing more than teaching.” Would she suggest dancing for the younger generation? “Even if not as a profession, dancing gives you posture and is amazing overall exercise for the body.”

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Spanish government has just imposed a no smoking ban in public if you cannot maintain two-metre social distancing in another harsh blow to the night clubs and bars as they will also have to close at 1am. Meanwhile, the state’s machinery seems to work to keep us in a constant condition of fear; feeding us constantly rising figures of infected people with Covid-19 and warning us through the media with propaganda messages that it’s due to our ‘irresponsible behaviour’ for meeting up with our families, or the younger generation partying all night long. However, this ‘irresponsible behaviour’ never seems to include our workplaces, business meetings and public transport which is heavily used

in the main cities. Nevertheless, many doctors are very critical of the way the media and the government provide us with the figures. The figures are actually quite complicated for the general public to understand. To break it down to basics; as an example, last March and early April in Andalucia, whose communi-
ty has the largest population in Spain, had saturated ICUs. Today’s figures show us that only 21 people are in the Andalucian ICUs with Covid. Large parts of the population are also being screened with PCR tests, and although the figures that are published every day may seem worrying, in fact, they might be positive

We must remember that these disqualifications and the support from the media have happened before. Certainly, some theories have no basis, but on the other hand, many of them are presented by doctors and biologists which are being treated in the same way.

IT’S traditional in the Valencia region for everyone to eat from the same pan that the paella is cooked in. Now, as it tries to stop the spread of Covid-19 in social PAELLA: No more communal eating. settings, the Generalitat’s Health department is recommending that the Sunday paella should be served on individual plates whether eating out or at home. So, too, should salad, instead of everybody dipping into the same bowl. The Health department also warned against drinking wine or water straight from an equally traditional porron or botijo. Not everyone has welcomed the advice and Manuel, a 70-year-old quoted in the Valencia press said he had no intention of complying. “If you’re with a few family members, it doesn’t matter,” he reasoned. “I’m going without a lot of other things. I haven’t been away, I don’t go to restaurants and I don’t meet many people,” he said. “I like eating paella from the pan and I’ll go on doing it.”
GUARDIA CIVIL officers stopped a major scare ending in disaster when they rescued two young children on a country road. The incident involved two Arabic children, who spoke no word of Spanish or English, running along the CV-912, the road that connects Almoradí with Rafal. The officers asked the children if they needed help, but between not understanding the language and the children crying, officers had to think of a different strategy in order to help the children. The Guardia Civil officers used their initiative and stopped passing vehicles until they found someone who could act as an interpreter for the visibly shaken and distressed, 11 and four-year-old children. Thankfully, they were able to solve their communication problems when one driver was able to assist the officers. He reported that the children had gotten lost after playing in

a park near the house of their relatives, and because they had only arrived on holiday a few days before, they became unaware of where the house was.
With the information, they managed to find a large group of people searching for the children, which included the relatives, in the district of El Saladar, in Almoradí.

IT HELPS: Prime Minister Sánchez needs support of all political parties. WHEN you run a minority government it is often nec essary to take note that if you want to push through a controversial idea that it helps to have opposition parties with you. The Spanish government needs money and needs it quickly, so it recognised that many councils throughout the country have significant surpluses in their accounts which are estimated at to talling more than €20 billion. Perhaps rather hurriedly the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez managed to enter into an agreement with Spanish Federation of Mu nicipalities and Provinces
(FEMP) by the narrowest of margins to borrow €14 bil lion over a period of 10 years, which has since been increased to 15 years. In return, those municipal ities lending the money will be invited to share €5 billion to use in efforts to support their residents following the Covid19 pandemic. Mayors all over Spain who are not aligned to the PSOE or Podemos parties are in revolt against the plan as they argue that they should be able to use their funds to aid their population and it appears more than likely that plan is doomed to failure.

Industrial sector growth THE latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that although industr y in Spain is showing definite signs of recovery,
just three sectors actually saw growth in June 2020. In essence, cigarette and drug manufacturers saw very little problem
with the lockdown as both tobacconists and pharmacies were allowed to remain open for the whole of the pandemic and therefore saw
business rise in the fist half of the year. The other sector that has grown relates to computers, technology and electronics.

I’m up to here with it all!
THIS week I truly don’t know where to start. Like most of us, I’m actually up to here with all of it. Masks, viruses, black, white, conspiracies, racism, religion, woke, fake news, kneeling, left wing, right wing, immigrants, BLM, knifings, shootings, grooming, lockdowns, offending, demos, diversity, integration, terrorists, politicians, statues, hatred, lies, hypocrisy and Uncle Tom Cobley et al. What was that about halting the planet and jumping off? Lead me to it! However, one thing this ol’ boy has never been guilty of is burying his head in the sand. So contrary to last week’s dissenters, I am in fact fully aware that this whole chaotic mishmash could well be an NWO conspiracy. I actually began to suspect something of this ilk in the early 60’s when a good friend of mine, far more astute than I, often stated that the world was not run by governments, but in his words, controlled by the ‘Twelve men of Wall Street.’ Nothing much has changed since, except that those he referred to are now spread much further afield than a single street in New York! Unfortunately, it appears to me that the whole plot could now be reaching some sort of climax. I fear the con-

When the dust finally settles, and assuming we are not regaled by the new Messiah, a brainwashed and weary human race, will welcome with relief the peace and order offered by those who control the NWO, and the predictions of George Orwell and his ilk

I did notice this week that places of entertainment and non-essential businesses in the UK were allowed to reopen again, after being ‘inexplicably’ closed a fortnight ago (remember my Eid appeasement piece!?). To me however, the event that took the whole tin was the erection in East London of the nine foot statue depicting a young black girl
using her mobile phone! So they want to tear down statues of our great statesmen and historical figures and in their place erect someone using a phone! It would be a little more acceptable if she’d have actually invented the device. Some chance! I also discovered that the widow of George Floyd, who ‘cried bitterly’ at his funeral, had not in fact seen him for six years. During that same period he had apparently also not paid a single penny in child maintenance. However in a move that just about sums up the priorities of today’s ‘woke’ brigade, she has actually received over $14 million (yep) in donations from ‘sympathetic well-wishers.’ No wonder the brothers could afford those new suits they all looked so uncomfortable in during the memorial ceremonies. What a result they’ve all had. I wonder how much of it has been donated to the charities of people that could truly benefit from it. Not a great deal I’ll be bound. GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA is a first-rate tourist destination located south of the Costa Blanca, 25km south of Alicante International Airport. POST-LOCKDOWN BABY BOOM & DIVORCE TSUNAMI
WITH both a baby boom and divorce tsunami predicted postl o c k d o w n , w i l l t h e re a l s o b e a publishing explosion along the lines of: ‘My Lockdown Novel’, in which ‘I discover the Real Meaning of Life’? The crisis probably won’t be quite as fruitful for political memoirs and diaries, though. ‘Monday: stayed i n d o o r s . Tu e s d a y : s t a y e d i n doors. Wednesday...’ And sales of classic novels are up, many featuring tales of plagues, viruses and diseases. And people are reading more as a consequence of lockdown: a third of older adults and half of 18 to 24-year-olds. But whatever the genre, authors often face the risk of unwittingly basing a fictional character on someone identifiable. The crime writer Simon Brett, who recently published his 107th book: The Clutter Corpse (I’m already on my 10th, so still a way to go!) had this problem with his very first: Cast, in Order of Disappearance, which he set in Goring-onThames with a victim called Marius.
However, the publisher worried that the actor Marius Goring might believe this referred to him and sue, so asked Brett to change the location. One of Brett’s novelist friends similarly had to make a late change to a character’s name, using ‘find and replace’ to change all Davids to Kevins. “This worked fine,” Brett says, “until readers got to the point when someone talked about visiting Florence and seeing Michelangelo’s famous statue of Kevin.” I had the same experience with an early novel. I likewise had to change a character’s name, using ‘find and replace’ to change all Joans to Beryls (don’t ask!). Like in Brett’s case, this worked well until you got to the bit about a key character’s trip to Paris and coming across in the Place des

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I don’t know if other people find this strange or if it’s just me! I shop mostly at Mercadona in La Cala where I live. When we went into lockdown and were only able to go out for food and medication I found Mercadona very good with the rules. When going there during the lockdown there was only one person supposed to shop per household. Before you could go into the store there was someone to make sure you had gloves and you were keeping your distance. This also seems to be the case at Aldi. In Mercadona someone was at the lifts making sure only one person at a time used each of the two lifts going in and out. Also, the staff at the tills were stopping people from getting close while putting their shopping on the belts and paying for it. All very good and well organised to me. I really can’t understand why this is not in place now the store is so much busier than then! They now seem to let whole families in at once as happened before lockdown, this makes it so hard to distance. I think two people per household is enough as it is not a very big store. Also, there are no staff telling people about the rules regarding the lifts or to keep their distance. I have found the customers are left to do this. Surely during this busy time, it should be there are more staff doing these things. After all, we are still in a pandemic! Hopefully, it won’t be long till we get back to going shopping with just the locals. Would like to know if anyone else thinks this way or could it just be me? Yours sincerely June Butler
OUR VIEW From loved to loathed ISN’T it about time we cut Harry and Meghan some slack? If we don’t agree with what they are doing then just leave them alone. As a young couple with many advisors surely they have all the interference they need. Maybe they just want to do their own thing and create their own lives as many young couples do. Also, if you have an inheritance from our Mother, Father, wealthy Granny, why should they not accept their generosity? In the beginning, it was the stuff of fairy tales, a girl from a far-off land meets a handsome foreign prince and falls deeply in love. After a whirlwind romance they marry… however, the evil press is intent on destroying them. Sure, Meghan came from a dysfunctional family who she has had problems with and is estranged from. Are the Royal family normal? I think not. Surely the world now is not so judgemental as the people in those fairy tales? A Prince cannot marry an entertainer, a girl from a troubled family, with less money or even... a different colour of skin? Have we not progressed as a people to celebrate diversity, to applaud the underdog, to believe in true love? Any man would protect his wife and lash out against those who tried to belittle her, hurt her or bad mouth her. Why should that mean that he is under the thumb or less of a man? Surely that makes him more of a man? Let the couple move to California if that is what they wish, they are doing you no harm. If you wish to see the back of them and only have bad to speak of them now, here is your chance to rid yourself of the energy it takes you to feel so angry or jealous or hard done by.

Silent majority Dear Euro Weekly News, This is the first time I have ever responded to anything in the Euro Weekly, but the letter from ‘angry old Brit’ Alan Doig was so exactly what I had already said that I felt I had to respond. Your ‘survey’ on Leapy Lee was a complete waste of time. You say 74 per cent, but 74 per cent of what? The number of people who bothered to respond of course, and who would respond? The people who agree with Leapy Lee, who are quite obviously in agreement with his obnoxious views. It is sad that a section of the Brits, who seem to make up his bigoted followers, are being represented by you as typical of the rest of us, who are not racist, not narrow-minded, and definitely not in favour of leaving Europe. This nasty little troll obviously loves to air his views without any criticism, but for heaven’s sake don’t think that we (the silent majority) are in agreement. We live here because we want to be here, and consider ourselves to be Europeans. Does anybody know who Leapy Lee is? It is not clear why his views should be put forward, but I wonder if it is a deliberate way of invoking a response for your letters column. Bit muddled Dear Euro Weekly News, Barry Duke seems to have become a bit muddled in this week’s column. He starts out by savaging Norman Tebbit and Tebbit’s remark about his father ‘getting on his bike’ to look for work in the 30’s. Then he moves on to condemn the present UK government and the ‘grotesque nanny state.’ Barry is appalled and believes ‘folk should take personal responsibility,’ ‘nowadays self-control and the exercise of willpower are outdated concepts,’ ‘millions have been conditioned to believe that it’s the job of bureaucrats to manipulate every aspect of their lives.’ In other words, Barry believes in personal responsibility, self-control, freedom of the individual and minimal state intervention in the lives of private individuals. All good, solid Tory values. Sounds like Barry has a lot more in common with Norman Tebbit’s dad - than he might care to admit. Sincerely, Jim Shanks

Expats, the Mother Country needs you! I find that among us expats our attitude is completely different to those back home, we have taken risks and changed our lives and our place of abode, and most of it wasn’t easy! I have little in common now with people back in the UK, I’ve been here over 25 years. I love Britain, though today I’m ashamed of how it has become, due to relaxed parenting and not being accountable for blame. Would I return to ‘help out’ ... If it was appreciated, yes.

‘But he works hard and smells nice’ MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man SORRY there was no column last week. It’s not that I wasn’t grumpy, it’s just getting harder to be amusingly grumpy as opposed to just really angry and that was me last week. I’m not much better this week but here are some of the things that set me off. Social distancing - I know we have to do it but I loved the way folks greeted each other here in Spain. I prefer kissing people on the cheek instead of touching elbows. I like wearing cologne and being close enough for people to say I smell nice. I know that might sound weird but it’s something my late mother always said to me. It was a standing joke. When Mrs S used to call her and moan about me for some reason or another, which I know is hard to believe, my Mum would always listen with a sympathetic ear and then say ‘yes but he does work hard and he always smells nice.’ Once again the British government sprung a surprise quarantine period on
the folks returning from France and other places. This, of course, made thousands of people try and return home quickly and, in many cases, cut short their only holiday this year. I’m sure many had scrimped and saved so they could have a bit of quality family time together and try to forget, for a short time, about the chaos in the world. What did they find? Every airline, ferry and Eurostar immediately at least doubled their prices. Yeah I know it’s business but it’s also taking advantage of people that, in many cases, just can’t afford to pay it. If they’d stayed and seen their holiday through to the end they will have to do two week’s quarantine and possibly not get paid and, in some cases even lose their job. They aren’t covered by travel insurance because their trips hadn’t been cancelled and they were returning by choice. The joke is people returning to the UK from Spain have reported that no-one checked on them through their quarantine. Some didn’t even fill in forms and I’ve even heard of people that went back for a few days and returned without being challenged by anyone. How can you cope through difficult times? If you are a person who looks at every situation through a negative mindset, it can have an impact

How To Cope Through Difficult Times on every aspect of your life, including family, friendships, relationships and health. Your thought patterns affect your emotions, which in turn, affect your behaviour and actions. For example, if you wake up one morning in a bad mood and consistently think of that bad mood, you will feel angry, frustrated, grumpy. This may lead to the actions of shouting at family members, becoming impatient with work colleagues, whilst mentally beating yourself up over your behaviour. Depending on the issue that each individual is dealing with, there are several ways you can approach this and learn how to change your way of thinking and your coping
mechanism. Write Rather Than Think The first step I take with all of my clients is journalling. Write down your current negative thought. What is the situation that has caused this thought? Do you have any physical evidence that makes this thought true? Writing down your actual thoughts helps you recognise and name it without judgement. You may even notice that your painful feelings disappear after a while. ‘This too shall pass’ can become words to live by. You Can’t Control A Person or Situation Outside Of You This is a statement I live by daily. You are only in control of you! Whilst you cannot control a situation or person outside of you, you
can control the emotions that you attach to it. Do not dismiss or ignore your emotion as that will not make the pain go away. Acknowledge the distress and accept it as your present reality. Accepting does not mean you like it, it only means that you can put these unpleasant thoughts to the front and centre of your mind, rather than allowing them to float unconsciously under the surface. Be Your Own Best Friend Eighty per cent of our thoughts are negative, we can be really mean to ourselves. Ask yourself, is that the way you would treat your best friend? Self-love is so important. Everything starts with how you feel about yourself, so, the next time you punish yourself

over a situation you cannot control, ask yourself this important question. Would I speak to my best friend in the same way? Do The Things You Love It is a fact that there will be situations in everyone’s life that may cause you difficult times, but, that doesn’t mean you have to allow it to control every aspect of your life. When these situations occur, remember to do the things you love and reach for the belief. Talk out loud if it helps, ‘I love the warmth of
the sun on my face’, ‘reading books makes me feel relaxed’, ‘I love the smell of fresh coffee’, these examples will amend your way of thinking and will encourage you to look for the positive. For yourself but not by yourself: what I have learned along the way (Warning, this article may be triggering for some readers)
MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I STARTED having difficult or should I say different thoughts at a young age that at the time seemed ‘normal’ to me as I knew no different ... now looking back I know I was definitely wired differently. I can clearly remember back to being in school and sitting in class and drifting off into my own world ... next thing I know, I had one of these drawing compasses in my hand digging my initials into my thigh until I drew blood, I clearly remember the feeling of freedom, control and satisfaction. Odd, I know, but true! I vividly remember walking home from school at about 13 years old and having visions of me running across the train tracks and what would happen if I did, would I hurt myself? Would I die? Would I be missed? What would happen? I didn’t know that other people thought like me, and that the thoughts that were running through my head were not right. In this last year I have finally learned to manage my condition alongside medication. Sometimes changing from one medication to another but also becoming more relaxed about its changes as I get to know what they mean and know that (most of the time) I can control them. So here’s what I’ve learned: • Don’t hide from it: get to know your condition from research as well as the behaviours you associate with depression, mania and overall bipolar. If you feel something is wrong, admit it. • Don’t hide behind it: mania is the very worst of you but you are still you. Whilst you learn to control
your condition you may have limited control over your behaviour but your actions are still your responsibility. If you catch yourself saying ‘I don’t have to do this because I’m depressed or mentally ill’ get someone to give you a swift kick in the backside. Distancing yourself from responsibility is also distancing yourself from reality. • Know yourself: Get to know your triggers. This is probably the hardest part. You need to start paying attention to what triggers mania or depression for you . • Love yourself: forgive yourself for mistakes or ‘bad behaviour’ instead of beating yourself up, resolve to do it differently next time and move on. • For yourself but not by yourself: Each person has to learn their own way to control their condition. It’s incredibly easy to recognise other people with bipolar when you recognise the behaviours in yourself, but it’s very obvious when they are struggling. There is nothing better than recognising your fellow bipolar person and sharing stories with each other. • Use your family and friends! Help them to understand, explain to them your triggers but also how to help you manage your moods. Often friends and family feel helpless when it comes to mental health not knowing how to deal with it, what’s appropriate to say or not. Love Ms Bipolar x

Detox water STAYING hydrated, especially at this time of year, is often a challenge for many of us. It’s so easy to pick up a fizzy drink or a cold beer, instead of drinking the water our bodies desperately need. Because it’s made by infusing flavour, rather than juicing or blending, detox water contains very few calories and can be made at home without any need for smoothie and juice making gadgets. Simply chop up your ingredients and add them to bottled water. The more you add the stronger the flavour will be and making the drink in advance by an hour or so will help extract more flavour. Don’t leave the ingredients in the water for longer than 12 hours though

Their cars have risen steadily from cheap and cheerful bargains to stylish and wellmade cars that compare and frequently beat their European counterparts. One of Kia’s newer entrants has taken an idea that Mercedes Benz started with the CLS and moved things to a more affordable level with its ProCeed, mixing four-door practicality and sweeping estate car looks. Kia calls the result a shooting brake; thereby recounting a term from the early days of motoring, with

However, the tradeoff is that sloping tailgate means rear vision is like looking through a letterbox, and a pretty slim one too. The range starts at £24,335 (€26,933) for a GTLine ProCeed with 138bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine and six-speed manual gearbox and tops out at £29,095 (€32,201) with the same engine in an even more thoroughly specified GT-Line S
with seven-speed automatic gearbox. The lead-in 1.4 petrol model passes the benchmark 60 mph in 8.8 seconds and will carry on to a top speed of 130 mph with a 45.6mpg average. It’s willing engine pulls this biggish machine along with verve and in impressive quietness. Although my test model was black with a distinctly black interior it was lifted by aluminium interior highlights and light grey diamond stitch cloth centre panels on the seating. So the ProCeed not only felt quality it looked it too. An array of standard equipment stretches from heated seats and steering wheel to auto lights, wipers and dimming mirrors. On top of that there is dual zone air conditioning, cruise control, powered, heated and folding door mirrors and a plethora of safety kit. It’s a package that stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons.

Practical Passion THE new Aston Martin DBX is a true ‘make-or-break’ moment for the British car maker and as such, it has to be rather good. That’s a pretty tall order for any new model, let alone for the first Aston Martin SUV. Aston Martin’s DBX is also based on a new aluminium platform and is produced at a new factory, so when the company talks about an allnew model, they truly mean it. Power comes from AMG’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine, producing 542 HP (550 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque and paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The official 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time is set at 4.5 seconds while top speed is set at 181 mph

(291 km/h). However, it is not as fast as the competition, the Lamborghini Urus does it in almost one second less. Perhaps a
DBX S in the future? Aston Martin wanted the DBX to offer a very comfortable cabin, that’s why they gave it a really
long 3.06-metre wheelbase while keeping the overall length shorter than that of the Bentley Bentayga, one of its direct rivals. The result is a surprisingly roomy and practical environment smothered in leather, with plenty of unique storage solutions thoughtfully scattered around the cabin. As standard, the Aston Martin DBX comes with air suspension, adaptive dampers, a 48-volt active anti-roll system, a set of 22-inch alloy wheels,
along with a 10.25-inch infotainment system, which is an adapted version of the previous-generation Mercedes systemwith Apple CarPlay and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Aston Martin has said that the DBX will receive a hybrid variant at some stage during its life cycle but such a model isn’t expected to arrive for at least two more years. The price is as high as expectations for this car, at a staggering starting
price of €175,000, and that’s before you add things like the outrageous luxury of a portable pet washer. The 11 different accessory packs are meant to increase the functionality, practicality and daily usability of what is ultimately a family-oriented SUV. Each accessory pack tailored to a different lifestyle need, some rather unconventional options include a specialedition Maxi-Cosi child and baby seat donning the Aston Martin Logo.

Clever competition CITY CAR: Digital displays instead of conventional mirrors gives a total of five screens in this clever car. THE Honda E is the Apple iPhone of cars. It’s small, expensive, and will need recharging regularly. But many buyers will be happy to overlook its shortfalls in order to drive one of the most desirable electric city cars on the market. It has an official range of 137 miles, dropping to 125 miles if you spec the ohso-pretty 17-inch alloy wheels. That’s better than the new Smart EQ Forfour, but not as good as recent competitors like the MINI Electric; which is cheaper, too.
The 35.5kWh battery supplies a 152bhp electric motor driving the rear wheels, but with 315Nm of torque, this gives the car its character. Honda claims 062mph takes 8.3 seconds. While, like an iPhone, its specs don’t stack up against competitors on paper, it’s the way the Honda E goes about its business that makes it ultra desirable. There are no fewer than five screens spread across the dash, including two infotainment displays and even digital screens in-
stead of conventional mirrors. If you prefer an oldfashioned switch or rotary control for changing the radio, this probably isn’t the car for you. The Honda E builds on the usual benefits of an electric car (instant acceleration and excellent refinement) with a tiny turning circle which makes city parking a doddle. Justifying the Honda E’s €28,902 start price is difficult given the low drivingrange, however, it really is a perfect city car leading the way with technology.
