IN 2018, the triathlete Miguel Ángel Roldán Marín received news that nobody wants to hear. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease of the central nervous system that currently has no cure. This athlete and teacher by profession then decided to tell his story and create an association ‘Saca la Lengua a la ELA’ or ‘Stick your tongue out to ALS’ to raise awareness of the disease and raise funds for research. One of the collective’s initiatives arrives this August, with a challenge that will be held on the Axarquia coast. The challenge is to swim the distance from the Balcón de Eu-

Last Friday, August 14 according to El País, Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa announced that all establishments, such as bars and restaurants would have to close at 1am, with no new patrons allowed to enter from midnight onwards. And nightclubs, discos and similar establishments have been ordered to close for the foreseeable future. Another measure announced by Illa was a blanket ban across Spain of smoking in public if a twometre distance cannot be maintained between a smoker and other people. Illa also said that bars and restaurants would need to guarantee a minimum safe

Benidorm-bashing and fake news AT the beginning of August the UK’s Daily Express carried this clickbait headline: ‘Brits ‘scared to go out’ as local beach resorts turn into ‘Benidorm on steroids’.’ It was a report about large crowds converging on Cornish resorts, and the apprehension locals felt about huge influxes of strangers. The paper said: ‘Speaking to the BBC Claire Harris, a 37year-old St Ives’ resident, said she’d banned her children from the town’s harbour and main shopping areas due to the number of people. She claimed the influx had left her “too scared to go food shopping” for fear of picking up the virus.’ The report itself contained no mention WHATSOVER of the popular Spanish resort, so why was the word ‘Benidorm’ used in the headline and intro in such a gratuitously offensive manner?

If fury has to be expressed - and I really believe that it does - it should be directed at the bureaucrats who, right now are playing us like fiddles by arbitrarily introducing new Covid-19 regulations, and insisting on moving the goalposts every few hours or so. This sort of game playing has in the past and will continue in the future to perplex both journalists and the public. Confusing briefings by government officials can only result in the inadvertent spread of misinformation at a time when clarity is most needed. All this confusion has to end soon if any shred of sanity is to be rescued from the wreckage of 2020.

CORNISH RESORTS: Locals were not happy about the huge influx of strangers into the area. Editors of British tabloids need to be called out each time they portray Benidorm as the ‘bad boy’ of Spanish resorts. Heaven knows there are thousands who care passionately enough about the manner in which it is portrayed to challenge this sort of negative reporting. I know that such people exist because I am one of them, and on numerous occasions have
blasted off emails berating news desks for false or negative reports about the place that I love. I also know that anger can be badly misdirected. For example Euro Weekly News last week found itself under attack on social media after it carried a report about the latest Covid-19 measures being implemented in Spain.
The report - headed ‘Spain Set To LOCKDOWN Friday September 18 with Three Phase System closing borders with France and Portugal’ - was instantly dismissed as ‘fake news’ that would only serve to worsen severe economic downturns in Spanish resorts. Such was the anger over the report that one enterprising local even began advertising

A FORMER National Police officer saved the life of a man, on Wednesday, August 12, who suffered a cardiac arrest while dining at a restaurant in the west of Malaga City. The events took place when the officer, who was off duty with his family in a bar, noticed that several people were asking for help since a man had lost consciousness. Immediately the policeman came to the aid of this person who was immobile, his face was

Fantasy thriller THE psychological horror ‘La Casa del Caracol,’ the first fiction feature film by director Macarena Astorga, is finishing its filming in the Axarquia region and will be presented at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival, which begins on August 21. In the film, the writer Antonio Prieto decides to spend the summer in a town where he hopes to find tranquillity and inspiration for his next novel, and there he meets Berta, a woman for whom he feels an instant attraction, as well
as some peculiar characters about whom he begins to write and investigate. Antonio begins to discover that the locals keep many secrets and a disturbing hidden legend, and the reality that he will live in those days will make him realise that, sometimes, reality far exceeds myths. ‘La Casa del Caracol,’ is one of the first films to be shot in Spain after the State of Alarm due to the coronavirus, and its rights have already been acquired by RTVE and Canal Sur.
Keep it clean THE Environmental Department of Velez-Malaga has launched an initiative, in collaboration with the Association of Neighbours and Friends of La Villa, to raise awareness about cleaning in this emblematic neighbourhood of the capital of Axarquia. This was presented on Thursday, August 13 by the area councillor, Antonio Ariza who said that “we are ... in La Villa, where an awareness campaign for cleaning is carried out under the slogan ‘La Villa es Nuestra Casa, la Queremos Limpia’,” which translates as ‘The Villa is our house, we want it clean.’ Ariza said “we ask for strict collaboration in terms of schedules and dumping of furniture on pavements. In this way, neighbourhoods like La Villa will make their historical charm shine, leaving behind the problem of rubbish. I encourage all residents to participate.” Josefina Rey, a member of its Environmental Commission, said “this campaign must be a starting point so together we can keep the streets of this historic neighbourhood clean and we count on everyone’s collaboration.”

Brave and big-hearted Oscar THE 11-year-old from Denia is walking the Camino de Santiago - more than 300 kilometres - with ever-supportive mum Niamh, to raise as much cash as possible for a sensory garden at the La Xara Occupational and Day Centre. “Two years ago, when Oscar was nine years old, he asked if I would take him on a journey. He asked if he could walk the Camino Santiago,” said Niamh, adding: “That’s not just like going for any old walk, it’s a pilgrimage!” In October 2018 and October 2019 determined Oscar covered 470kms of his incredible challenge. The plan was that in October 2020 Oscar would tackle the final 300-plus kilometres of the camino from Leon to Santiago de Compostela. “However, as we all know, 2020 hasn’t quite gone to plan,” explained
mum-of-three Niamh, a well-known singer on the Costa Blanca. To avoid Oscar missing more school after months of lockdown, mum and son hatched ‘a crazier plan.’ Oscar will walk his final 300km of the Camino Santiago through the tricky tracks and trails of Galicia in the very early mornings of August, having started his trek on Friday, August 14. Niamh said: “Oscar’s fundraiser has been incredible. Truly heartwarming. We really can’t thank you all enough. And donations continue to fly in. It’s not too late. But, right now, the focus of our mum/son duo must be to simply walk. “To cover 300km in less than two weeks. To keep each other positive and to take time to bond further and deeply appreciate our surroundings.” Previously Oscar cam-
paigned for sponsorship when he set himself the challenge two years ago, and with the help of the local community and generous friends of the family, he was able to buy a much needed electric hoist for the local La Pedrera rehabilitation centre AND he also scraped together the money to donate a new pair of trainers for all 60-plus residents at the men’s shelter in Gandia. And having recently visited the Occupational and Day Care centre in La Xara and seeing first-hand the “vitality and importance of this place,” Oscar instantly decided that if he could raise a bit of money from his walk, then this was where he’d like to direct it. “He loved the happy vibe and walked away so certain that they deserve ALL our support,” said Niamh.
Oscar asked Director of the Centre, Ana, “How can I help?” and she explained that they often dream about installing a sensory garden adapted for special needs. With a budget tighter than ever, practical priorities come first, but Oscar is determined to help - and you can too. “There’s been so much negativity recently. It’s time to take back the joy and the sharing and the caring that a community’s unity can create, said Niamh urging the public "from your heart” to help make the project a success. And it’s not just cash donations that can help make the sensory garden a reality.

THE association Nuevas Generaciones de Rincon de la Victoria has joined the ‘Sé valiente’ or ‘Be brave’ campaign which encourages young people to contribute their ideas and experiences to build a common project for the future, urging them to take a step forward and work for Rincón de la Victoria and all of Malaga. This was explained by the president of NNGG in Rincon de la Victoria, Al-
ba Ortiz, who stressed that “there are many young people who want to contribute their grain of sand to society with political concerns and wanting to improve the future of our municipality.” Nuevas Generaciones is the largest politicalyouth organisation in the province of Malaga, with more than 1,800 members, and the campaign includes videos and images which will be launched on social net-
works, encouraging young people to interact and join this project from platforms like Facebook, Twitter and mainly Instagram. Alba Ortiz wanted to emphasise that the doors of NNGG are open to all those young people “wanting to take action, to learn proactively and who want to feel useful working for the interests of our generation and of our land to be brave and step forward.”

Extraordinary measures THE 31 municipalities of the Axarquia have presented projects to participate in the Activación, Impulso y Recuperación del Empleo (AIRE), launched by the Consejería de Empleo, Formación y Trabajo Autónomo for the Andalucian and Malaga municipalities, an initiative aimed at the region with a fund of €3.9 million which will allow the hiring of 450 unemployed. The territorial delegate for Employment and University of the Junta de Andalucia in Malaga, Carmen Sánchez Sierra, pointed out that this initiative was launched “in record time” and as an “extraordinary measure, designed to reactivate employment and benefit the unemployed population in order to alleviate the effects caused by the health crisis caused by Covid-19.” According to the data provided by Carmen Sánchez, the AIRE endowment for the entire region is €165 million, of which €146 million come from the European Social Fund and €19 mil-

Poets abode ON the 84th anniversary of the death of the Granada-born poet Federico García Lorca, three of the writer’s nieces have decided to put up for sale what was the author’s summer residence in the town of Nerja. The house measures 300 square metres, has an orchard of another 1,300 and is located in the centre of the Andalucian town, on Calle Hernando de Carabeo, close to the famous Balcón de Europa. The author of ‘Bodas de Sangre’ spent some summers on this property in the 20’s and 30’s of the last century. The three nieces, daughters of his brother Francisco, are the owners of this property that is more than 100 years old and overlooks the cliffs of the town. They decided to put the property up for sale two months ago with a starting price of €3 million. According to the advertisement ‘Casa Lorca is, possibly, one of the most historic houses in Nerja.’

There is limited access to Calle Maravillas, Calle Nueva and the descent to Maro beach. The councillor points out that this reorganisation will prevent the traffic problems which occurred this summer on days of great influx to the beach. MOTRIL Local Police have already issued two fines for non-compliance of the new 1am closing regulation for bars, after finding two chiringuitos still open after the newly imposed curfew on Monday, August 17, just one day after the laws came into effect. Reinforcing surveillance on the beaches with 90 new patrolling officers has been prioritised to help prevent people gathering for a nightcap after the bars close. The same will happen in both Salobrena and Almuñecar. Two fines have also been issued for late night drinking on the beach in both Playa Granada and Carchuna.
THE Axarquia Nature Studies Cabinet, GENA, Ecologistas en Accion have reported the sand dunes known as La Carraca in El Morche, Torrox, are under threat due to people crossing them to get to the beach. A complaint has been filed with the Andalucian Regional Government of Urban Planning and Environment, after GENA pleaded with beach guards to be more active in reporting people to the Local Police but were informed that “it is not their task.”
GENA said that the construction of new apartment blocks nearby, along with the creation of the Senda Litoral coastal walkway, has increased numbers of visitors to the beach. Currently the town hall has cordoned off the area and put up signs, but the organisation says police presence is needed, more notices provided and the issuing of fines put in place for people who ignore them. Torrox Town Hall is calling for more support from local residents and tourists to help conserve this area.
Well dressed THE town hall and the Instituto Andaluz de la Juventud have launched a sexual prevention campaign among young people in Motril in which, under the slogan ‘Te pongas lo que te pongas, vístete para la ocasión’, or ‘You put on what you wear, dress for the occasion’, it aims to provide information and prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through the use of condoms. With this objective, both administrations, represented by the councillor for Youth of Motril, Alejandro Vilar, and by the provincial director of the IAJ in Granada, Juan Miguel Perea installed an information point in the Plaza del Ciprés, where youngsters can receive information on sexual health. Juan Miguel Perea from the Instituto Andaluz de la Juventud has indicated that this new edition of the sexual health campaigns seeks to offer information to young people from Motril about their healthy effective relationships and the practice of safe sex to prevent infections.
Council pays THE Motril City Council will pay €596,000 to the bankruptcy administrator who has been appointed to manage the ADL (Activities of daily living) company, in charge of the Home Help Service, with the prior commitment that the payment of the wages of its workers in the municipality would be priority. The ADL company, which manages this service in numerous municipalities in the Andalucian provinces, has requested to enter into bankruptcy when declaring itself insolvent to face the debts it has contracted. OVER the years the Costa del Sol has been home to many entertainers and EWN was lucky enough to speak exclusively to Sheena Cochrane who lives in Mijas Costa and was a professional dancer who managed to travel the world performing with some massive names in the process. Sheena has released a book named ‘Exit Stage right’ which is available as an e-book on Kindle and paperback on Amazon. “I began dancing when my mother suggested I do something to use up my excess energy. I wasn’t the best at school and decided maybe I could make my future from dancing. “I was a day student at the Royal Ballet but realising that there were many more girls better than me, I decided that I would be better using my talent as a means to travel the world.” And so, she did, she travelled to the Middle East, the Far East, the Caribbean, Bahamas, Mexico, South America and many more. From there Sheena became one of the famous 60’s Tiller Girls and would ap-

Whilst there she crossed paths with people such as Cary Grant, Jerry Lewis, Liberace, Shirley MacLaine, Cher, Tony Bennett, Paul Anka, to name but a few. She also appeared as an extra in the film ‘Chisum’ with John Wayne, which was filmed in Durango, Mexico. When asked why she gave up such an exciting lifestyle she said “It’s a young profession and I gave up professional dancing in 1981. I was given the option of becoming a dance teacher, but I enjoyed dancing more than teaching.” Would she suggest dancing for the younger generation? “Even if not as a profession, dancing gives you posture and is amazing overall exercise for the body.”

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Spanish government has just imposed a no smoking ban in public if you cannot maintain two-metre social distancing in another harsh blow to the night clubs and bars as they will also have to close at 1am. Meanwhile, the state’s machinery seems to work to keep us in a constant condition of fear; feeding us constantly rising figures of infected people with Covid-19 and warning us through the media with propaganda messages that it’s due to our ‘irresponsible behaviour’ for meeting up with our families, or the younger generation partying all night long. However, this ‘irresponsible behaviour’ never seems to include our workplaces, business meetings and public transport which is heavily used

in the main cities. Nevertheless, many doctors are very critical of the way the media and the government provide us with the figures. The figures are actually quite complicated for the general public to understand. To break it down to basics; as an example, last March and early April in Andalucia, whose communi-
ty has the largest population in Spain, had saturated ICUs. Today’s figures show us that only 21 people are in the Andalucian ICUs with Covid. Large parts of the population are also being screened with PCR tests, and although the figures that are published every day may seem worrying, in fact, they might be positive

We must remember that these disqualifications and the support from the media have happened before. Certainly, some theories have no basis, but on the other hand, many of them are presented by doctors and biologists which are being treated in the same way.

Created in 1980, latest annual turnover for Ta-Tung was €15 million and it is expected that the new owners, who are retaining the founder Kav Ly will look to expand the business by producing more meals in the Pastas Gallo kitchens. New targets for increased expansion will be France and Portugal and food will be based on Chinese, Japanese and Thai cuisine.

IT HELPS: Prime Minister Sánchez needs support of all political parties. WHEN you run a minority government it is often nec essary to take note that if you want to push through a controversial idea that it helps to have opposition parties with you. The Spanish government needs money and needs it quickly, so it recognised that many councils throughout the country have significant surpluses in their accounts which are estimated at to talling more than €20 billion. Perhaps rather hurriedly the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez managed to enter into an agreement with Spanish Federation of Mu nicipalities and Provinces
(FEMP) by the narrowest of margins to borrow €14 bil lion over a period of 10 years, which has since been increased to 15 years. In return, those municipal ities lending the money will be invited to share €5 billion to use in efforts to support their residents following the Covid19 pandemic. Mayors all over Spain who are not aligned to the PSOE or Podemos parties are in revolt against the plan as they argue that they should be able to use their funds to aid their population and it appears more than likely that plan is doomed to failure.

Industrial sector growth THE latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that although industr y in Spain is showing definite signs of recovery,
just three sectors actually saw growth in June 2020. In essence, cigarette and drug manufacturers saw very little problem
with the lockdown as both tobacconists and pharmacies were allowed to remain open for the whole of the pandemic and therefore saw

I’m up to here with it all!
THIS week I truly don’t know where to start. Like most of us, I’m actually up to here with all of it. Masks, viruses, black, white, conspiracies, racism, religion, woke, fake news, kneeling, left wing, right wing, immigrants, BLM, knifings, shootings, grooming, lockdowns, offending, demos, diversity, integration, terrorists, politicians, statues, hatred, lies, hypocrisy and Uncle Tom Cobley et al. What was that about halting the planet and jumping off? Lead me to it! However, one thing this ol’ boy has never been guilty of is burying his head in the sand. So contrary to last week’s dissenters, I am in fact fully aware that this whole chaotic mishmash could well be an NWO conspiracy. I actually began to suspect something of this ilk in the early 60’s when a good friend of mine, far more astute than I, often stated that the world was not run by governments, but in his words, controlled by the ‘Twelve men of Wall Street.’ Nothing much has changed since, except that those he referred to are now spread much further afield than a single street in New York! Unfortunately, it appears to me that the whole plot could now be reaching some sort of climax. I fear the con-

When the dust finally settles, and assuming we are not regaled by the new Messiah, a brainwashed and weary human race, will welcome with relief the peace and order offered by those who control the NWO, and the predictions of George Orwell and his ilk
will ultimately come to pass - Job done. I did notice this week that places of entertainment and non-essential businesses in the UK were allowed to reopen again, after being ‘inexplicably’ closed a fortnight ago (remember my Eid appeasement piece!?). To me however, the event that took the whole tin was the erection in East London of the nine foot statue depicting a young black girl
using her mobile phone! So they want to tear down statues of our great statesmen and historical figures and in their place erect someone using a phone! It would be a little more acceptable if she’d have actually invented the device. Some chance! I also discovered that the widow of George Floyd, who ‘cried bitterly’ at his funeral, had not in fact seen him for six years. During that same period he had apparently also not paid a single penny in child maintenance. However in a move that just about sums up the priorities of today’s ‘woke’ brigade, she has actually received over $14 million (yep) in donations from ‘sympathetic well-wishers.’ No wonder the brothers could afford those new suits they all looked so uncomfortable in during the memorial ceremonies. What a result they’ve all had. I wonder how much of it has been donated to the charities of people that could truly benefit from it. Not a great deal I’ll be bound. And so it is with many celebrities with a particular name. Step forward Alistair Sweetheart, I mean Darling. The conductor and pianist Daniel Barrowboy is in good company with Herbert von Caravan. We had the Labour politician Ed Milligram and, before him, the trio of Flair, Frown and Flunkett. In the entertainment world there are Faye Done Away and Jimmy Starbucks. The Church is represented by Cormack Murphy O’Connor Cruise O’Brien and journalism by Janet Street-Walker. John Yogi Bear invented the television and Johnny Bunny Onion wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress. What was Paul Dropping’s nickname at school? Why is

Was the politician John Nott actually a negative kind of man, and did Harvey Wallbanger really go ballistic? Was the snooker player, Doug Mountjoy, always having the time of his life? And was Red Riding in fact the sister of Robin? But it’s not just the names of people that keep me awake at night. The Spanish drink their ‘cafe ole’ and wish each other ‘feliz ano’. In
French restaurants they order ‘fruits de merde’ or ‘gigolo d’agneau’, while the English prefer roast saddle of bicycle or snake-and-pygmy pie. The Germans love their ‘Pantoffelpuree’ and ‘Penatencremsuppe’. In the field of sport, the cricket commentator, Henry Blowfly, is now 80 years old while Monty Parasol is retired for the time being and Leigh Halfpenalty is still scoring points for Wales. ‘But he works hard and smells nice’ MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man SORRY there was no column last week. It’s not that I wasn’t grumpy, it’s just getting harder to be amusingly grumpy as opposed to just really angry and that was me last week. I’m not much better this week but here are some of the things that set me off. Social distancing - I know we have to do it but I loved the way folks greeted each other here in Spain. I prefer kissing people on the cheek instead of touching elbows. I like wearing cologne and being close enough for people to say I smell nice. I know that might sound weird but it’s something my late mother always said to me. It was a standing joke. When Mrs S used to call her and moan about me for some reason or another, which I know is hard to believe, my Mum would always listen with a sympathetic ear and then say ‘yes but he does work hard and he always smells nice.’ Once again the British government sprung a surprise quarantine period on
the folks returning from France and other places. This, of course, made thousands of people try and return home quickly and, in many cases, cut short their only holiday this year. I’m sure many had scrimped and saved so they could have a bit of quality family time together and try to forget, for a short time, about the chaos in the world. What did they find? Every airline, ferry and Eurostar immediately at least doubled their prices. Yeah I know it’s business but it’s also taking advantage of people that, in many cases, just can’t afford to pay it. If they’d stayed and seen their holiday through to the end they will have to do two week’s quarantine and possibly not get paid and, in some cases even lose their job. They aren’t covered by travel insurance because their trips hadn’t been cancelled and they were returning by choice. The joke is people returning to the UK from Spain have reported that no-one checked on them through their quarantine. Some didn’t even fill in forms and I’ve even heard of people that went back for a few days and returned without being challenged by anyone. short step to Willibald Rottenplopp (Swiss), Ida Nokimova (Czech), Hristo Barguerov (Bulgarian), Slavko Sonovabic (Serbian) and, of course, Kow Dung Pong (Chinese). Then there are the names that we inflict on our children when we have not considered their abbreviated forms, such as the Dover family and their two sons Benjamin and Stanley. The only two cases I have personally come across are Archibald Bishop (which must have been intentional) and, in Germany, Horst Reder (forgivable). In Italy we could have Alberto Fresco and Oliver Garchi. In the Englishspeaking world, parents named Hanger would need to be reasonably dumb to name their son Clifford. Samuel Bowe’s Mum and Dad may have a warped sense of humour and perhaps the parents of Robert Slay like a good laugh every 20 minutes too. And we can’t let this go without reference to Jeremy ‘Three Goals’ Attrick.

POST-LOCKDOWN BABY BOOM & DIVORCE TSUNAMI
WITH both a baby boom and divorce tsunami predicted postl o c k d o w n , w i l l t h e re a l s o b e a publishing explosion along the lines of: ‘My Lockdown Novel’, in which ‘I discover the Real Meaning of Life’? The crisis probably won’t be quite as fruitful for political memoirs and diaries, though. ‘Monday: stayed i n d o o r s . Tu e s d a y : s t a y e d i n doors. Wednesday...’ And sales of classic novels are up, many featuring tales of plagues, viruses and diseases. And people are reading more as a consequence of lockdown: a third of older adults and half of 18 to 24-year-olds. But whatever the genre, authors often face the risk of unwittingly basing a fictional character on someone identifiable. The crime writer Simon Brett, who recently published his 107th book: The Clutter Corpse (I’m already on my 10th, so still a way to go!) had this problem with his very first: Cast, in Order of Disappearance, which he set in Goring-onThames with a victim called Marius.
GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY YOU know you’re getting old when the clothes you used to wear, come back into fashion. I noticed it a few years ago, when almost everyone was strutting around with their knees on display, due to purposely designed rips in their jeans. A look that by now, really is past its sell-by-date, and should be forgotten. Yes, for those who follow fashion, you’re still deeply trapped in the 1990s - a period of time that style seems to have escaped. In Puerto Banús, on Tuesday morning, I stopped by Gucci and Dsquared2 to see what’s happening. My style tends to be very preppy, if not classic, so as I skimmed the rails of endless neon colours, sportswear and ugly, chunky trainers, I found nothing to suit. At Ralph Lauren, I was tempted, but then realised, I already have most of the items I was considering. Thankfully my AmEx remained unused. I had a glass of rosé at Sinatra’s Bar, a place I used to hop all over, back in the aforementioned 90’s. It made me think of how life has changed. Back then, I

However, the publisher worried that the actor Marius Goring might believe this referred to him and sue, so asked Brett to change the location. One of Brett’s novelist friends similarly had to make a late change to a character’s name, using ‘find and replace’ to change all Davids to Kevins. “This worked fine,” Brett says, “until readers got to the point when someone talked about visiting Florence and seeing Michelangelo’s famous statue of Kevin.” I had the same experience with an early novel. I likewise had to change a character’s name, using ‘find and replace’ to change all Joans to Beryls (don’t ask!). Like in Brett’s case, this worked well until you got to the bit about a key character’s trip to Paris and coming across in the Place des

What’s it all about? liked to party all day and all night. My life choices were pretty hectic, if not ill advised at times. I realised I was the one who used to ‘over shop’ for designer goods, that I disposed of as quickly as I’d purchased them. I guess I was one of the original ‘fast fashion’ crew. I would wear something once, or perhaps twice, before deciding it was finished. That’s the trouble with being photographed regularly, clothes need to be worn just a few times. I found myself addicted to Dolce & Gabbana one week, Etro the next. And as one designer became my favourite, the last usually went to charity, or to friends who wanted certain pieces. My shopping habit, like my life, was out of control. Dressing for dinner, I stared into my wardrobes, full of clothes that I rarely wear. Since relocating to Marbella, I tend to wear shorts most of the time, and polo shirts, all of the time. Beach
life, is a pretty chilled existence. It made me think, why do we need so much stuff? Life in a place like Marbella is all about excess. Every second car is a Rolls-Royce, 20 grand handbags are considered normal, Balthazars of vintage Champagne at lunch, why not? But really, what it’s all about? I think lockdown has changed us all, in so many ways. I now have no desire to shop for things I once felt I needed. In fact, I’ve realised that we must slow things down. The demand for designer goods, may be delivered rather differently as we move forward. Certain houses have even stopped production. What will those with limitless credit cards do to pass the days? One idea, is to stop and think. If you shop properly, your choices will last. If you buy quality, over disposable trends, you will hold on to them, and they will be timeless. We must remember that life
PRETTY CHILLED: It’s a beach life. is cyclical, and everything comes around again. The next generation will feel they have discovered it. Let them. And as life keeps going, this current strange phase shall pass. It’s how we move forward that counts, and what we count as important that matters.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I don’t know if other people find this strange or if it’s just me! I shop mostly at Mercadona in La Cala where I live. When we went into lockdown and were only able to go out for food and medication I found Mercadona very good with the rules. When going there during the lockdown there was only one person supposed to shop per household. Before you could go into the store there was someone to make sure you had gloves and you were keeping your distance. This also seems to be the case at Aldi. In Mercadona someone was at the lifts making sure only one person at a time used each of the two lifts going in and out. Also, the staff at the tills were stopping people from getting close while putting their shopping on the belts and paying for it. All very good and well organised to me. I really can’t understand why this is not in place now the store is so much busier than then! They now seem to let whole families in at once as happened before lockdown, this makes it so hard to distance. I think two people per household is enough as it is not a very big store. Also, there are no staff telling people about the rules regarding the lifts or to keep their distance. I have found the customers are left to do this. Surely during this busy time, it should be there are more staff doing these things. After all, we are still in a pandemic! Hopefully, it won’t be long till we get back to going shopping with just the locals. Would like to know if anyone else thinks this way or could it just be me? Yours sincerely June Butler
OUR VIEW From loved to loathed ISN’T it about time we cut Harry and Meghan some slack? If we don’t agree with what they are doing then just leave them alone. As a young couple with many advisors surely they have all the interference they need. Maybe they just want to do their own thing and create their own lives as many young couples do. Also, if you have an inheritance from our Mother, Father, wealthy Granny, why should they not accept their generosity? In the beginning, it was the stuff of fairy tales, a girl from a far-off land meets a handsome foreign prince and falls deeply in love. After a whirlwind romance they marry… however, the evil press is intent on destroying them. Sure, Meghan came from a dysfunctional family who she has had problems with and is estranged from. Are the Royal family normal? I think not. Surely the world now is not so judgemental as the people in those fairy tales? A Prince cannot marry an entertainer, a girl from a troubled family, with less money or even... a different colour of skin? Have we not progressed as a people to celebrate diversity, to applaud the underdog, to believe in true love? Any man would protect his wife and lash out against those who tried to belittle her, hurt her or bad mouth her. Why should that mean that he is under the thumb or less of a man? Surely that makes him more of a man? Let the couple move to California if that is what they wish, they are doing you no harm. If you wish to see the back of them and only have bad to speak of them now, here is your chance to rid yourself of the energy it takes you to feel so angry or jealous or hard done by.

Silent majority Dear Euro Weekly News, This is the first time I have ever responded to anything in the Euro Weekly, but the letter from ‘angry old Brit’ Alan Doig was so exactly what I had already said that I felt I had to respond. Your ‘survey’ on Leapy Lee was a complete waste of time. You say 74 per cent, but 74 per cent of what? The number of people who bothered to respond of course, and who would respond? The people who agree with Leapy Lee, who are quite obviously in agreement with his obnoxious views. It is sad that a section of the Brits, who seem to make up his bigoted followers, are being represented by you as typical of the rest of us, who are not racist, not narrow-minded, and definitely not in favour of leaving Europe. This nasty little troll obviously loves to air his views without any criticism, but for heaven’s sake don’t think that we (the silent majority) are in agreement. We live here because we want to be here, and consider ourselves to be Europeans. Does anybody know who Leapy Lee is? It is not clear why his views should be put forward, but I wonder if it is a deliberate way of invoking a response for your letters column. Bit muddled Dear Euro Weekly News, Barry Duke seems to have become a bit muddled in this week’s column. He starts out by savaging Norman Tebbit and Tebbit’s remark about his father ‘getting on his bike’ to look for work in the 30’s. Then he moves on to condemn the present UK government and the ‘grotesque nanny state.’ Barry is appalled and believes ‘folk should take personal responsibility,’ ‘nowadays self-control and the exercise of willpower are outdated concepts,’ ‘millions have been conditioned to believe that it’s the job of bureaucrats to manipulate every aspect of their lives.’ In other words, Barry believes in personal responsibility, self-control, freedom of the individual and minimal state intervention in the lives of private individuals. All good, solid Tory values. Sounds like Barry has a lot more in common with Norman Tebbit’s dad - than he might care to admit. Sincerely, Jim Shanks

Summer shaving SUMMER is in full swing, and whilst there is nothing wrong with a little body hair, there’s something about wearing a breezy dress with silky smooth legs that makes you feel so confident. Put sugar in a small plastic bowl and add enough olive oil to saturate the sugar without excess oil floating over the sugar. Next, quarter an entire fresh lemon and squeeze all the citrusy goodness into the mixture, give it a stir and you’re good to go. For the actual exfoliation be sure to soak your skin in warm water in the
bath or shower, then scrub thoroughly, rinse away scrub, shave with desired foam or gel and then scrub and rinse once more. The olive oil will soften the sur face of your skin leaving it glowing, the sugar will remove the dead skin without drying it out, unlike salt. The citric acid will aid with inflammation from rashes. A quick word of warning … The olive oil makes the tub slippery.
Detox water
STAYING hydrated, especially at this time of year, is often a challenge for many of us. It’s so easy to pick up a fizzy drink or a cold beer, instead of drinking the water our bodies desperately need. There’s been a lot of hype about the health benefits of ‘detox water.’ Of course drinking extra water will make you feel better anyway, however, the addition of herbs, vegetables and fruits is said to help with weight loss, toxin removal, balancing of pH in the body, digestive health, increased energy levels and improved complexion. Because it’s made by infusing flavour, rather than juicing or blending, detox water contains very few calories and can be made at home without any need for smoothie and juice making gadgets. Simply chop up your ingredients and add them to bottled water. The more you add the stronger the flavour will be and making the drink in advance by an hour or so will help extract more flavour. Don’t leave the ingredients in the

UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I STARTED having difficult or should I say different thoughts at a young age that at the time seemed ‘normal’ to me as I knew no different ... now looking back I know I was definitely wired differently. I can clearly remember back to being in school and sitting in class and drifting off into my own world ... next thing I know, I had one of these drawing compasses in my hand digging my initials into my thigh until I drew blood, I clearly remember the feeling of freedom, control and satisfaction. Odd, I know, but true! I vividly remember walking home from school at about 13 years old and having visions of me running across the train tracks and what would happen if I did, would I hurt myself? Would I die? Would I be missed? What would happen? I didn’t know that other people thought like me, and that the thoughts that were running through my head were not right. In this last year I have finally learned to manage my condition alongside medication. Sometimes changing from one medication to another but also becoming more relaxed about its changes as I get to know what they mean and know that (most of the time) I can control them. So
here’s what I’ve learned: • Don’t hide from it: get to know your condition from research as well as the behaviours you associate with depression, mania and overall bipolar. If you feel something is wrong, admit it. • Don’t hide behind it: mania is the very worst of you but you are still you. Whilst you learn to control your condition you may have limited control over your behaviour but your actions are still your responsibility. If you catch yourself saying ‘I don’t have to do this because I’m depressed or mentally ill’ get someone to give you a swift kick in the backside. Distancing yourself from responsibility is also distancing yourself from reality. • Know yourself: Get to know your triggers. This is probably the hardest part. You need to start paying attention to what triggers mania or depression for you . • Love yourself: forgive yourself for mistakes or ‘bad behaviour’ instead of beating yourself up, resolve to do it differently next time and move on. • For yourself but not by yourself: Each person has to learn their own way to control their condition. It’s incredibly easy to recognise other people with bipolar when you recognise the behaviours in yourself, but it’s very obvious when they are struggling. There is nothing better than recognising your fellow bipolar person and sharing stories with each other. • Use your family and friends! Help them to understand, explain to them your triggers but also how to help you manage your moods. Often friends and family feel helpless when it comes to mental health not knowing how to deal with it, what’s appropriate to say or not. Love Ms Bipolar x

Hissing cockroaches: Pests or pets?
BARRY DUKE IT started as a fact-checking exercise that the Internet assumed was a quest for an apartment full of monster cockroaches. I began getting pop-up ads for hissing Madagascar roaches hours after I began reading up on the critters, something I was prompted to do by passage in ‘The Web’. Jonathan Kellerman’s thriller describes a katsaridaphobic character running out of her bathroom screaming after it had been invaded by giant roaches. I was sceptical, mainly because I’d seen some pretty big cockroaches in South Africa, but none that were three inches long. So I did a quick check, and sure enough, Kellerman’s description was spot on. Within an hour a window popped up on my computer screen, notifying me that I could buy from Amazon ‘a complete Kindle guide to the care of America’s favourite

pet, the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach’ for just $2.86 (€2.42) I then checked whether the roaches were indeed ‘America’s favourite pet.’ One site informed me that their ‘gentle nature, large size, odd sounds and lowmaintenance care have made them popular educational tools and pets.’ The ‘bots’ that monitor one’s
online searches took that search as a signal that I had a burning desire to populate our apartment with the bugs, and more and more ads began appearing. One, from a company called Fluker’s Farm in Louisiana, was offering them in two sizes: juveniles for $1.45 (€1.22) each and adults for $1.95 (€1.65). Fluker’s informed
me that ‘Hissing cockroaches are often kept as pets … Hissers have a relatively long life span and, under optimal conditions, they can live up to five years!’ Then up popped an eBay ad for ‘a brand-new, unused, unopened and undamaged’ roach for $2.50 (€2.11) plus $27.90 (€23.56) shipping.’ Just when I thought these
topped the list of the weirdest pop-ups ever created, along came one for Donald Trump bandages. The algorithms that track one’s browsing had somehow made a connection between a benign and harmless insect and a repulsive, brutish and very stupid life-form. For a moment I was puzzled. Then I remembered doing a search during the Covid-19 lockdown period for adhesive plasters (‘curitas’ in Spanish) after I’d cut a finger slicing carrots, and could find none in the apartment. The Trump bandages are being sold by an outfit called the Patriot Depot for £8.95 (€9.90) for 20. The blurb says ‘Who better to put on a bandage but Trump, the man who’s been healing the wounds inflicted by Obama’s presidency.’ Don’t rush to put in an order.
