THE Mallorca President has thanked the Spanish King for bolstering the image of the island as a safe holiday destination. “The best promotion there can be for Mallorca is that the Royal Family maintains its holidays in this Covid situation,” Catalina Cladera said she told King Felipe VI at an audience with the monarch on Monday morning at the La Almudaina Palace in Palma. Commenting to press following the meeting, Cladera said the presence of King Felipe, Queen Letizia and their daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia at the Marivent Palace in the Mallorca capital represented a message of “peace of mind and of safety.”

Police swoop on pickpockets POLICE in Palma have made 34 arrests in a major swoop on an international network of pickpockets described as one of the biggest gangs of its kind in Europe. Around 50 officers took part in 20 or so Tuesday morning raids in various districts of the city, including El Arenal, Coll d’en Rabassa, Aragon, Sa Vileta, Son Ferriol and the Joan Miro area, according to reports. Spanish press said the operation was the result of a joint investigation involving the National Police Centre Station and the Organised Crime Group under the orders of the Organised Crime Drug Unit, with the collaboration of Palma Local Police and police forces from other countries. Investigators believe the

LOCAL HERITAGE: The museum features all kinds of pieces, images and documents related to Soller and Mallorca’s maritime history. WATER reserves in the Balearics in July were at the highest level for a decade despite there being less rainfall than normal, the regional Environment ministry reported. The islands’ reservoirs stood at 67 per cent of capacity last month, compared with 51 per cent in July last year, and around 20 per cent above the level in the driest summers over the last 10 years. The AEMET State Meteorological Agency reported that there was an average of less than three litres of rain per square metre last month in the Balearics, representing just 45 per cent of the average for July.

PROMOTIONAL TOOL: The video is aimed at supporting Felanitx’s tourism sector. FELANITX Council has launched a new promotional video focusing on the locality’s coastal gems. Under the title ‘Felanitx is waiting for you,’ the video mixes up images of colourful fishing harbours, striking rocky inlets and crystal clear waters lapping the shores of unspoilt coves in locations including Porto Colom, Cala Ferrera and Cala Serena.

The local authority explained its Tourism department produced the short film in collaboration with the Mallorca Tourism Foundation to use as a promotional tool on social media in support of the Felanitx tourism sector. The council also revealed it is working on a longer video to be shown at tourism fairs, as and when the Covid-19 pandemic allows.

FREEDOM: The couple snipped the turtle out of its trap. THERE was a lucky encounter for a turtle tangled up in a fishing net off the coast of Mallorca’s Cap Blanc. A young couple were sailing in the area when they noticed a great mass of plastic and rubbish floating in the sea. They decided to go and pick it up, but when they got closer they realised to their horror there was a turtle totally trapped in the netting. ITV backlog solution

Museum reopens doors THE Soller Maritime Museum has reopened its doors following months of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic and to allow reform works to be carried out. The museum located in the old Santa Catalina de Alejandria chapel in Soller Port welcomed its first visitors on Friday. The renovated exhibition area features old naval pieces and objects related to fishing and trade, models of boats, photographs and historic images and documents, with other exhibits related to the sea distributed around the building exterior, entrance and exhibition hall. The main themes are fishing, trade and emigration. One of the big attractions is ‘The Murmur of Memory’ project for the recovery and preservation of oral memories related to the port, which Mallorca President Catalina Cladera and Balearic government Vice President and regional minister for Culture, Heritage and Language Policy, Bel Busquetas, officially inaugurated earlier in the week. The project is based on research by Dr Catalina Gaya and

and allowing it to swim free. They then scooped up the netting to safely dispose of it. “We continued on our way with the net taking up half of our boat, but satisfied on having been able to help that defenceless animal,” one of them posted on Instagram alongside a video of the turtle rescue. “How sad, how ugly everything is, how difficult to find words for what just happened,” the post continues. “A little bit of awareness please…”

THE Mallorca government hopes a new mobile ITV station will clear a major backlog of appointments which has built up as a result of the Covid-19 crisis lockdown. The administration has approved the modification of the contract with the company which operates the service to get the new station up and running. It has also signed an agreement with Calvia Council on the cession of land in Peguera on which to locate the station. Mallorca President Catalina Cladera thanked Calvia mayor Alfonso Rodriguez for making the land available and making it possible to “get the project going and improve Mallorca’s ITV service.” “With this provisional solution we hope to be able to normalise the waiting times for getting an appointment for an ITV.” Rodriguez said it was about “offering a public service and looking out for the general interest.” Works on preparing the 5,000sqm plot on the Ma1A highway connecting Peguera and Andratx are set to start this week. The plan is for the mobile station to have four inspection lines for cars and motorbikes, allowing for a 30 per cent increase in Mallorca’s inspection capacity. It is expected to function from 6am to 9pm and to operate for a period of 10 months. The Consell said the temporary closure of the island’s four ITV stations in Son Castello, Son Oms, Inca and Manacor during the State of Alarm affected some 63,000 inspections. As it stands the waiting time for an appointment is around four months.

Police stop parties CALVIA Local Police have beefed up night patrols of Magaluf and Palma Nova beaches to stop boozy gatherings of youngsters. The council reported officers have come across large numbers of young people partying on beaches near to Calvia’s nightspots and have had to break up groups making a racket or failing to practise social distancing. The local authority said police are keeping a particular eye on the beaches from about 2pm onwards to stop revellers from getting together to party. The administration highlighted the fines of between €100 and €3,000 for drinking in public places under legislation aimed at addressing the effects of the Covid-19 crisis.

Local Police are also checking venues follow the rules on closing times established under a Balearic government decree. At the weekend officers reported establishments in Palma Nova and Peguera for still being open after 2am. Ponsa for allowing dancing and another due to noise, as it had the music turned up and its doors open. Officers continue to monitor Punta Ballena and adjacent streets to make sure businesses remain shut. The Balearic government ordered the shutdown of the notorious strip mid-July following scenes of throngs of rev-

ellers not wearing face masks or keeping a safe distance apart and reports of drunken incidents and brawls on the street. The council made it clear most businesses in the locality are complying with the regulations to prevent Covid-19 infections and to stop drunken excess tourism, as well as with the regular municipal by-laws.

Bars and restaurants worried NEARLY one in three bars, cafes and restaurants in Mallorca could end up shutting for good due to the devastating impact of the Covid-19 crisis, a Balearic hospitality sector association has told the regional government. On Monday representatives of the hospitality arm of the CAEB Balearic Business Association Confederation discussed what the entity described as the “worrying” situation with the Govern’s Employment and Labour Health director general Virginia Abraham and the Balearic Health and Safety Institute director Ruben Castro. The CAEB representatives called for the extension of the ERTE temporary suspensions of job contracts until the end of the year, “thinking about the survival of the small businessperson, so they can maintain all their workers’ jobs,” a demand the Balearic government agrees with. They also raised concerns about contracts for employees taken on for specific periods of time and discontinuous fixed contracts, saying the matter was keeping many of its members awake at night. They said maintaining jobs and guaranteeing employment for six months is unsustainable for many of Mallorca’s small and medium-sized businesses at this time, and could end up meaning enterprises have to shut down.

CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY: Citizens need to be “active on prevention and exercise maximum caution,” the Balearic Environment regional minister stressed. THE Balearic Island government has reminded the public to be on the alert for sparking off wildfires. “Be active on prevention and exercise maximum caution,” regional Environment and Territory minister Miquel Mir urged citizens. He reminded people that “we are currently in the month of the year with the highest risk,” and cautioned against “letting down your guard,” especially given the particularly high temperatures in

recent weeks. So far this year wildfires have affected a significantly smaller area of the Balearics than in 2019: 33.3 hectares by August 6 compared with just over 100 hectares by the same date last year. But Mir made the point the difference was to a great extent down to the fact the archipelago has not suffered any one big major fire this year, like the 2019 blaze in Cala Tuent. “The statistics can change from

one day to the next,” he stressed. He underlined the importance of residents doing their bit and “being proactive in implementing self-protection measures,” notably fire breaks, and especially for properties located between forest and urban areas. The regional minister made the comments during a visit to the Son Bonet air base in Marratxi, one of four with the aerial resources of the department which he heads.

Youths blamed for break-ins GUARDIA CIVIL have blamed delinquent youths for a wave of break-ins in Inca. They have arrested two and are investigating another five who are underage on suspicion of forcing their way into a number of homes and businesses in the locality. The couple of detentions and investigations into two of the minors came after an Inca resident came across one trying to get inside a property while the others kept a lookout, and then a few days later found them trying the same thing. When the owner went outside he discovered the gang had forced the padlock on his bike to nick it. The same group of delinquents are reportedly believed responsible for hits on a home and a bar in the same street just hours earlier. Also that they had taken advantage of the lockdown to get into the establishment on various occasions to steal different stuff. In the case of the other three minors under investigation, the Guardia have again linked them to break-ins of residential properties and businesses. In one of the robberies the thieves got away with items with a combined value of more than €1,800. The Guardia said the young robbers generally covered their faces to avoid being identified and went equipped with tools like levers and wrenches to force open doors. The Guardia also said the investigation remained open and further arrests had not been ruled out.

Pro and anti Royals BOTH pro and antimonarchists turned out for the Royal Family’s visit to Petra on Monday evening. As the Royal party visited the house where the 18th century friar credited with taking Catholicism to the US West Coast, Junipero Serra, was born, there were cheers and calls of “Long live the King” and “Long live Queen Letizia” from the gathering organised by Foro Baleares in defence of the Crown. Meanwhile the pro-republican group Arruix Borbons was whistling and shouting out demands to free Catalan prisoners and slogans like “the monarchy is rubbish.” King Felipe and the Queen were joined on their tour of the Juniper Serra museum by their daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, who was walking with a crutch after falling a day earlier. Accompanying the royals were the heads of the

During their visit they learned about the centre’s work with children, adolescents and their families over the last two decades in one of the most disadvantaged districts of Mallorca. The also chatted to some of the youngsters the project assists.

FUNDS from the Balearic eco-tax are set to finance the creation of jobs for the needy. The regional government has authorised contracting a service to improve the quality of environmentally important areas of the islands’ coastlines, the work to be carried out by people at risk of social exclusion. The initiative will cover cleaning, conservation and maintenance actions. These will include clearing waste from beaches, bays and other areas located in protected natural spaces and separating and classifying the waste collected and transporting it to authorised points to be recycled or treated. Also removing invasive species, reporting on environmental incidents, gathering data and producing reports.

Easing crisis impact THE Mallorca government has approved a €2.5 million plan to help local councils with their efforts to ease the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on their localities’ economies. The collaboration agreement, which comes under the island administration’s ‘Mallorca Activa’ programme, is aimed at municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants for measures to boost economic activity and the business structure. The Mallorca Activa project will be managed by the Consell’s Presidency department, and will include measures like professional training based on infor mation technology and communication, the promotion of employment based on moder nisation, and digital transition towards a more sustainable socio-economic model. It will also include a training programme for the unemployed in sectors which generate jobs adaptable to the reality of each municipality, among them caring and logistics. Bike lane network grows PALMA Council has added another two kilometres of bike lane to the city’s network. The city administration reported that works on a new €50,000 lane running between Andreu Torrens and Andrea Doria streets are finished. The island capital now has 94 kilometres of cycle lane in all. This is just six kilometres short of what the Sustainable Movement councillor Francesc Dalmau said is the council’s goal of having a network extending for more than 100 kilometres during the current legislature. The councillor pointed out

that bike and scooter use has increased since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and maintained the city administration is working to combat climate change and to promote health, “hence why we have done this work. “We will continue creating more spaces for bikes in Palma,” he pledged. Dalmau also mentioned the council is working on a bylaw to impose a 30kph speed limit. He said the measure would reduce the number of accidents and put vehicle speeds on a level with that of bikes and vehicles on 90 per cent of the city’s streets.

Cat torture arrests POLICE arrested two youngsters for the horrific torture of a cat in Manacor in the early hours of Saturday morning. According to reports the creatures’ desperate cries woke up residents. They saw a cat tied up and four young people doing unspeakably cruel things to the animal until it died from its injuries. The youngsters left the cat’s body in the street, although a resident placed it in a rubbish container. When a Local Police patrol arrived at the scene they set about searching the area for those responsible, leading to the detention of the pair on animal cruelty charges. The investigation remains open and National Police have not ruled out further arrests.

Child poverty risk

COVID-19 IMPACT: The Balearic Infancy and Adolescence Office director warned the pandemic could further increase the child poverty rate. AS many as one in four children in the Balearic Islands were at risk of poverty even before the Covid-19 crisis, according to a newly released report. The OBIA Balearic Infancy and Adolescence Office director Serafin Carbello revealed last week that the figures from 2019 put the archipelago as having a child poverty rate of between 22 and 25 per cent. He warned it is “the most serious problem” for infancy and adolescence, and expressed concerns that the impact of the

pandemic on Balearic families could push the child poverty rate up even higher. Carbello also reported that extreme poverty on the islands had increased last year. He linked the rise to the Balearics social structure and to job insecurity. The OBIA report concludes that the instruments created for dealing with child poverty “appear to be insufficient,” despite administrations’ “commendable efforts.” He particularly highlighted the issue of housing and municipal services.

UNKNOWN: The FEHM president said how the next two months go depends on whether the UK keeps the quarantine requirement in place. THE UK’s decision to include the Balearic Islands on its red travel list had a notable impact on July hotel occupation levels in Mallorca, according to an organisation representing the sector. The average number of beds taken in the islands’ hotels which were open for business last month was 37 per cent, reported FEHM Mallorca Hotel Business Federation president Maria Frontera. She said the figure was about 5 per cent below what had initially been

predicted for July. The FEHM president blamed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s decision to impose a quarantine on all travellers arriving in the UK from anywhere in Spain, including the Canary Islands and the Balearics. Frontera revealed that 57 per cent of Mallorca’s hotels are currently open. In her view, how occupation levels turn out in August and September depends on whether the UK government keeps the quarantine measure in place or not.

EIB Fights Pollution SPAIN is receiving a great deal of funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the latest announcement shows that it will provide €95 million for a number of urban regeneration projects in Barcelona. A significant percentage of this investment will be to create a new concept of housing where the majority of vehicle traffic is only allowed around the perimeter of the neighbourhood with priority given to pedestrians and where cars are allowed, speeds will be carefully controlled.

UK job loss potential continues by John Smith WH SMITH, the newsagents which has grown over the decades since its founding in 1792 is considering shedding 1,500 jobs, more than 10 per cent of its work force due to the lockdown. The main area for concern is its UK stores at airports and railway stations as with a hugely reduced footfall, sales have literally plum­ meted and airport sites in particu­ lar are expensive to maintain. Things are slightly happier with its US airport operations as the bulk of flights are internal and are

relatively well populated meaning that sales are still at acceptable levels. In a statement on its finances, the company revealed that it ex­ pected to make a loss of at least £70 million (€77 million) for its fi­ nancial year ending August com­ pared to a profit of £155 million (€170 million) in 2019. Despite this, reserves are rela­ tively good and the company has strong lines of credit so with the potential reduction in staff it be­ lieves that it can return to profit. If nobody noticed that the president’s payment had been increased, it has been passed as part of the budget. This covers the legal side of it. The trans­ parency leaves something to be desired because the mem­ bers really had no opportunity to object to the higher gra­ tuity.

Still denying its existence

MILLIONS still dying, hospitals and governments unable to cope, countries that have allowed tourism to resume becoming once again rampant with it - and still numbskulls are denying the existence of this devastating Covid virus. Why do human beings choose to turn a blind eye to events and situations that are blatantly staring them in the face? Do these ostriches not understand that by ignoring the existence of a problem, they will never stand a chance of solving it? Like their overblown feathered counterparts, do they think that when they withdraw their heads all the troubles will have miraculously gone away? Well I have news, they won’t. To my mind, unless something drastic or miraculous occurs, I think this evil malady will be with us for well into next year and possibly beyond. It makes my blood boil to see so many totally ignoring the directives of the health leaders and authorities. I also feel that by advising the over 50’s to stay at home is aiming at the wrong end of the age groups. These are the citizens who have in the main been conforming to the government’s directives and now are being penalised for it. It’s the self-centered youngsters that should be firmly locked

down. But that won’t happen will it? The privileged and uncaring members of present day generations simply won’t comply. We are now experiencing the direct result of the namby pamby’ing leftie luvvies who, over the past 30 years or so, have somehow eased themselves into positions of control and frankly got it all wrong. It has resulted in millions of our youngsters firmly

believing that the world owes them a living and utterly destroyed all their respect for others, particularly their elders. The social media has allowed them to air and spread doctrines based on little, or no knowledge of history or tradition whatsoever, and subsequently instilled in them values so out of touch with reality that they consider the colouring of their pubic hair a deci-

sion of major importance. Sometimes I really am thankful to have reached the age of 81. At least with my future longevity growing shorter and more precarious by the day, I won’t have to experience the total chaos our planet will find itself in when serious decisions need to be made by this bunch of, oh so often ‘offended’ and utterly naïve bunch of selfish wasters. I just hope and pray, that those among them who have received a decent upbringing and retain a true empathy and respect for their fellow human beings, can lift their peers out of the mire they have sunk into. Unfortunately, as these are in a sad minority, I fear most of their efforts will be lost in such a morass of entitled under-achievers and violent criminals that most of their efforts will be completely in vain. ALL over Europe and beyond we’re seeing Covid-19 restrictions lifted, then replaced as infections spike. However, when this is all over, I’d be very interested to see an in-depth survey and analysis of those people who 1) won’t do as they are advised/ requested/required; 2) take it as a personal affront and infringement of their civil liberties to be asked to wear a mask for a very short time; 3) regard it as absolutely essential to go to a pub/ beach/hotel abroad without further delay; 4) have no concept whatsoever of community responsibility. Whenever lockdown is eased a very short period out of a healthy person’s lifetime - why are so many anti-maskers prepared to break the law and gamble with their own and other people’s safety for basically trivial reasons? And presumably there is a

ANTI-MASKERS ARE THE NEW ANTI-VAXXERS: WHAT ABOUT YOU? cross-over with the conspiracy theorists/influencers who think the metal strip in a mask is a conductor for 5G and anti-vaxxers - a quarter of Brits - say they might refuse a coronavirus vaccine. Does this matter, you ask? You bet, because their selfishness and stupidity put others at risk, particularly those who can’t have vaccinations for medical reasons. Punishment (denial of NHS services or schooling, for instance) for non-vaccination is a nonstarter, it’d be hard to enforce without added bureaucracy and likely costly court cases. So why not try, as a one-off against this virus (deadly to both health and the economy), the ‘carrot’ instead? Offer, say, some hard cash for each person vaccinated. It would cost a few hundred million pounds, but would likely soon pay for itself. Money talks, possibly louder than influencers, igno-

rance or superstition. Alternatively, if a vaccine becomes widely available, surely all countries will require a certificate of vaccination for entry, as used to be the case for smallpox in many countries before it was eliminated due to a worldwide vaccination programme. Once these anti-vaxxers find they’re unable to travel anywhere other than in their own country, I suspect the problem could disappear... So, where do you stand? Lost in a Masquerade GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN the ‘new normal’, we’re becoming quite divided. While we show something of a united front, we stand strong against the dreaded virus, or more likely, the dreaded aftermath. We clapped for frontline workers, continue to sanitise our hands, until the skin is almost non-existent, and of course we try to remain as socially distant as possible, even in impossible situations. However, there’s a major division between those who believe in Covid-19 and those who call it the Scamdemic. On Monday, I was in Marbella and found a fantastic little bar, selling Lavazza coffee. This may seem mundane, but as someone who’s lived in Italy for many years, and also one who drinks way too much coffee, this find is like winning the lottery.

Spain is fantastic for many things, sadly, coffee isn’t one. I love strong coffee, but the flavour of café solo is way too bitter. When I ask for frothed milk, I receive warm milk. I start my day with one cappuccino, followed by uncountable espressi. I’m pretty wired most of the time, but why change the habit of a lifetime? Anyhow, I bought a take out espresso and found a spot where I could stand, socially distant, remove my mask, and down my fix. It’s a long time since I’ve been ‘papped’, as they say, so when a guy with a camera arrived and took my photo, I was shocked. At first I assumed he was photographing the buildings. But no, he continued snapping and told me it’s illegal to remove my mask. I laughed, and explained I was trying to drink my coffee. “I’ll make a police report!” he steamed, ironically wearing a filthy mask, with his nose uncovered. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been wearing a mask since March, will continue to. But at what point does removing it becoming such an issue

for someone else? My friend felt it would be funny to take photos with his phone, much to the annoyance of Mr Busybody. It all got heated, so I finished my coffee, replaced my mask and moved on. Clearly the guy had bigger issues to address. Later, I was standing in-line at the ATM, when the lady next to me asked why I was wearing a mask. “It’s a fake virus?” she infor med. I didn’t respond, but that didn’t stop her. She went on, “I must register with the chat forum, Truth, and learn the reality. The leaders are taking over, soon we’ll be microchipped”. I prayed the guy in front of me would hurry, so I could escape. In one day, I learned a lot: there are the believers and the suspicious. Those wearing masks, not because we’re forced to, but because we care for others. Then there are those who feel it’s time to become a law enforcer. Let me put it on record; the next person to stick a camera in my face without asking can expect to have it smashed. Unless of course, it’s Patrick Demarchelier.

OUR VIEW Your choice WE’RE all going on a summer holiday!.. No? Maybe not yet? I do think we all deserve a holiday after the year we have had so far. But is that a possibility? There seems to be many strong opinions on this terrible virus and whether it is getting worse, better or just something we should try to live with. Should travelling be a priority? Can people be trusted to go to a different country and abide by the rules and regulations? We should remember that a holiday is a luxury and also that cheap beer and sunshine aren’t the answers to all our prayers. However, some of us need to break from the old routine, to literally distance ourselves from our everyday life. When will we be able to do that? Nobody has an answer. This uncertainty seems to be perpetuating fear, and constant news updates on figures really stick the boot in. Whilst we are getting riled up and upset about not getting to burn in the sand for a week there are other people who have been parted from their families, missed funerals, lost their jobs and lost their lives. Deep down do we really feel that we deserve a break more than them? The governments have our choices in the palm of their hand. There are some who think that they are crushing us and others who think they are saving us. The majority may feel that we should put our trust in them and let them take control, it would certainly free us of some worries. Others believe it is a well-planned conspiracy to control the world, are they getting a bit carried away? Before you think of flying off into the sun please think, are you ready for any eventuality? Is it really worth it? If so, go right ahead.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, On Friday, July 24, my wife and I had come out of Mercadona and into the outside parking area near the entrance. When she suddenly collapsed and her head hit the floor. A young Spanish couple in a car stopped and jumped out and called an ambulance as she was unable to move. They stayed with us and used a hand fan to keep Stella (my wife) cool in the fierce heat. I would like to say a mighty big thanks to this couple for the quick reaction and help they gave us and it just shows that there are people in this world that care and have feelings for others. BARRY DUKE I ANTICIPATED a robust reaction to a question I posed on Facebook last week, but I hadn’t bargained for the outpouring of derision and fury it provoked. This is what I posted on the Brexpats in Spain page: ‘How many of you are prepared to return to the UK to help it out in its hour of need? ‘I ask because I received a message on FB that got me thinking about writing a column for Euro Weekly News. The message reads, in part, “it is time for expats to return home and rally to the mother country at its time of need. We have an economy to rebuild and we face huge challenges from the virus, from the shortterm impact of Brexit, and the ‘woke’ fifth columnists undermining us from within”.’ It damn near caused a riot. Within 30 minutes 115 people had left comments, many of

which cannot be repeated in a f a m i l y newspaper. The page’s administrator was forced to close down the thread when it looked like it was g e t -

ting completely out of hand. Many excellent points were made, but to my mind the best was posted by Iain Henderson who pounced on the term ‘fifth columnists,’ meaning the enemy within.

He pointed out that the UK ‘isn't at war with the EU ... We are not dealing with spies, saboteurs, or irregular forces. This is a story of a small island

nation which has taken its ball and bat home. It’s now having a childish tantrum as it’s facing a long period out in the cold with no agreement with its biggest trading power.

‘And no. I won’t be going home to help Blighty in its hour of need. This is an act of sabotage of epic proportions and the tragedy is that we have done it to ourselves. John Perry added: ‘I am one of those ‘woke fifth columnists’… We are disenfranchised exiled patriots. We love our country and want the best for it. We came to Spain as Euro Brits. ‘England is presently in the hands of the very worst third rate leadership, governed by Johnson, a pound shop Donald Trump. There is no place for me at the moment there. ‘I expect the union to break up and Brexit to utterly destroy the economy. Covid will simply intensify the disaster already inflicted on it by a half-witted, post-imperialist deluded electorate.’ My own view? Let the thousands of expats who voted to leave the EU return to sort out the current mess and the far bigger one looming on the horizon.
