LET’S NOT GIVE UP “LET’S not give up on the winter without a fight.” This is the optimistic message from Costa Blanca’s hospitality sector which has confirmed hotel occupancy is up with August getting off to a healthier start than July. The region’s hotel association, Hosbec, attributes the slight upturn to the domestic and local market and said in a statement “hotel occupancy is improving in these first days of August.” “The hotel sector of the Valencian Community faces the most strategic
weeks of the tourist season with better data than those recorded during July.” It follows president of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig’s revelation he is “hopeful” about the resurgence of tourism after the coronavirus crisis, although he admits that “it will not be easy.”
August is off to a good start.
He told Europa Press: “There is no plan B, but rather a plan: we are working together with the private sector and with the people who have trusted in the Community.” Hotel occupancy during this first week of August has oscillated between 61 per cent of the hotels on the Costa Blan-
ca, 46 per cent in Benidorm, 44 per cent in Valencia City and 45 per cent in Castellon. It is believed between 10 and 20 per cent of the visitors are foreign tourists, depending on the area, with the remainder likely to be Spanish and expats.

A desire to travel Hosbec president, Toni Mayor, reminded the government that “this difficult stage could have been positive with better planning and control, which should serve as a lesson to face the autumn and winter with a strategy to protect the sector and a substantial improvement in the data on infections by Covid-19. “Let's not give up on winter just yet,” he added. The association and its members recognise “there is a lot of stagnant demand and a desire to travel, and not only among the British… this is why hoteliers are sending an optimistic message, especially to the Spanish government.” And the message is this: “We shouldn’t consider autumn-winter to be lost without a fight. We must stabilise and reduce the contagion to the levels of the end of June, and we must take extreme security measures so that the same thing does not happen, and lift the restrictions of the European countries. “If they control the health situation, we can do so just as effectively. And if we manage to do it in four weeks, we will still be able to recover the tourist pulse, even if it is only partial,” stressed Mayor.

Public Holiday Reminder AUGUST 15 is a public holiday throughout Spain and is ‘Dia de la Asunción de la Virgen María.’ It is one of the biggest religious festivals across the country involving the Marian feast day. The holiday is based on the Christian belief that God raised the Virgin Mary to heaven reuniting her with her soul after her death. The holiday has been kept since the fourth century AD, as an attempt to replace an earlier pagan harvest festival. This is why it is still called the ‘Feast of Our Lady of the Harvest’
in certain regions of Europe. The Dia de la Asunción de la Virgen María, celebrations begin in Spain on August 11 and culminate on August 15. The holiday usually coincides with several ferias throughout Spain, however due to Covid-19 health and safety regulations, all group gatherings have unfortunately been cancelled. Although the holiday falls on a Saturday this year it may lead to possible closures and reduced hours of supermarkets and businesses.

THE Compromis party is campaigning to remove King Juan Carlos I’s name from Spanish streets. Responding to a request from Carles Mulet, a Compromis senator who represents Valencia, the central government sent him a 15page document listing villages, towns and cities with public spaces bearing his name. Juan Carlos abdicated in favour of his son, Felipe, in 2014 and recently left Spain amidst scandals surrounding the multimillion fortune
who should give explanations, they said. According to local historian Antoni Espinos, the new battlements modify Sant Bertomeu’s traditional outline that is fixed in Javea’s collective memory. It was undeniable that the church would once have had battlements, Espinos conceded, but the tower was finished in the 17th century and, owing to its height would not have needed “false crenellations.” The “wise official technicians” need to demonstrate their prior existence, the historian declared.

In the early days of the pandemic, the regional government had to turn to China for PPE. Generalitat sources quoted in the Spanish media explained that it would rather rely on the interior market, which is betterprepared and can respond more quickly than turn to Asia.

CRENELLATED battlements now adorn the tower of Javea’s Sant Bertomeu church, which is currently undergoing urgently-needed repairs. Built as a fortress as well as a church to protect the local population against Barbary pirate incursions, the battlements are obviously an authentic addition to the 16th century church. Or are they? Members of the Municipal Culture Committee maintain that they are not, and have no “historic basis.” They passed on their objections to Javea’s mayor, Jose Chulvi and Culture councillor, Quico Moragues who explained that the town hall is not involved with the repairs or restoration. As this is being carried out by the Archbishopric and the Parish, it is they

OLIVA: Town hall suggestion for affordable housing.
OLIVA Town Hall asked the local population to help meet the demand for social housing. Yolanda Balaguer, who heads the Social Welfare department, explained that banks are reluctant to provide properties repossessed from mortgage defaulters. Instead she called on the owners of empty apartments to rent them out to local families. At present, approximately 40 Oliva families are looking for homes with reasonable rents, she said, but property-owners and estate agents hesitate to let properties unless future tenants demonstrate that they can pay. In the past they wanted to see a work contract, asked for a cash deposit and set other hard-to-meet conditions, Balaguer said. Owing to the Covid-19 crisis, requirements were even more stringent now and, given the slow economic recovery, they were likely to get worse. Social Services has offered to put owners and future tenants in touch with each other to formalise rent agreements and would continue to monitor the situation to ensure that tenants kept their side of the bargain. In cases where they did not, the property would be returned to the owner, Balaguer pledged.

LA NUCIA’S €2.4 million second Sports Pavilion will open its doors at the end of 2020. The new facility is being built next to the Camilo Cano Olympic Stadium and will allow the number of sports teams and clubs in the town to continue to increase. Nucia mayor, Bernabé Cano and Councillors Miguel Ángel Ivorra and Serafín López, visited the site last week, which will also have a large car park for use by the pavilion and La Muixara Public School. He said the sports facility will be a “functional and dynamic covered sports pavilion of 2,854 sqm parquet court.” It will be equipped with four changing rooms, a fitness room, a weight room and a massage room, and is being financed by the Alicante Provincial Council and La Nucia Council. “We are very satisfied with this work, it is aesthetically beautiful and different. The growth of the grassroots sport and the increase in the number of teams in all the La Nucia clubs made it necessary

The Santa Maria group, which owns both of the parks, said the plan had always been to shut down at the end of August. A drastic drop in tourism has only exacerbated the situation and forced their hand. A source told Informacion that “each year the influx of visitors is less in the last week of August” and added that “this year the forecasts are not very good due to the entire situation generated by the coronavirus and the lack of tourism.” As such, the water park and the leisure complex have decided to close their doors on August 23.

Benitachell digs BENITACHELL’S health centre now opens for three days a week following town hall complaints. Before Covid-19 it was open for five days but this was then cut to two. “Even three days aren’t enough,” municipal sources said, pointing out that the centre no longer has a paediatrician and parents must take children to neighbouring Teulada. “Not only do we want a paediatrician back in Benitachell, we also want an increase in the days it opens, which were few enough before,” a town hall statement declared. Benitachell’s mayor Miguel Angel Garcia, Health councillor Isa Garri-
do and Teulada-Moraira mayor, Rosa Vila, recently spoke via video link to Antonio Barcelo, Marina Salud’s primary care director. Benitachell’s population increases during the summer, they explained, and many residents are elderly, needing extra care. Telephone attention was also inadequate, they said. Marina Salud, the outsourced private company that provides the Marina Alta’s health care, initially refused to make any changes, but finally relented and added an extra day. The centre is now open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am until 3pm.
Customer safety TWO restaurants in Valencia City closed last Thursday afternoon, August 6, amid a coronavirus scare. The Valencian chain which owns La Más Bonita Patacona and La Más Bonita Ruzafa restaurants, said in a statement the measure was taken following the ‘possible infection’ of one of their employees : “For the safety of our customers and employees we closed voluntarily until we know the results of the tests of all the workers.”

A pig of a problem MARINA ALTA agricultural growers and hunters warned that the Cerdoli population is rocketing. A cerdoli is a cross between a wild boar (jabali) and a Vietnamese pig (cerdo) many of which have been abandoned when they grew too big to be cute. Not only are the cerdolis happy to eat anything they encounter, but they are increasingly unafraid of humans. They are also responsible for road accidents, especially at night when they are most active although drivers are unaware of their presence. Meanwhile growers like Bernardino Ortala from Beniarbeig are increasingly anxious to find a solution. “They come looking for food and water but once they get inside a smallholding they ruin everything,” Ortala told Las Provincias recently. Francisco Ginestar from Denia has also suffered from the cerdolis. “My father has an acre of vines and they have eaten his entire crop of muscatel grapes,” his daughter Pepa explained to the same newspaper. “Then they returned, made another hole in the fence and finished off the little they left behind the first time. It’s hopeless,” she declared.

Disco throws in the towel SPAIN’S oldest discotheque, Hacienda, closed one day after reopening in Javea at the beginning of August. The legendary disco, which dates from 1966, issued a communique explaining that it had decided to cease activities ‘owing to the present health situation and the risk of Covid-19 contagion.’ The statement went
on to explain that with the security of clients and personnel in mind, this was the ‘safest and most coherent decision’ although the disco had complied with all the necessary health regulations. “Remember, this is not goodbye, it’s au revoir. Hacienda Javea will sparkle again, once it is safe for everybody.” The management had insisted on reservations
and moved sociallydistanced tables onto the dance floor but, according to sources quoted in the local media, it soon became apparent that clients were flouting all the rules. “They decided to throw in the towel once they realised that there were people who had learnt nothing from the pandemic,” the same sources said.
Catamaran makes SOS call THE concessionary that provides the service on Calpe beaches went to the rescue of the five occupants of a catamaran. After receiving a message that one of the people aboard the boat, a man of 77, was unwell with possible heart failure, lifesavers went out to the catamaran in their rescue launch. On arriving and finding that the four other passengers, two of
them minors, were also indisposed, complaining of dizziness and faintness, they transferred them all to the La Fossa beach, where the concessionary’s Basic Life Support ambulance was waiting for them. Three had recovered by the time they were on dry land, but the elderly man and two other passengers were taken to Calpe’s health centre.

COVID-19 COVER: Free quarantine accommodation for suspected or confirmed cases.
VISITORS to the Valencian Community with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 will spend the quarantine period in free hotel accommodation. The Generalitat’s Tourism department is paying €280,000 to take over a Benidor m hotel for Alicante Province tourists and another in Valencia City for those from Valencia or Castellon, the regional Spanish press reported.
Unconfirmed reports hinted that the Benidorm hotel would be on the Levante beach. Francesc Colomer, regional Tourism secretary, explained that the initiative incorporated yet another measure linked to tourist safety, sending out a message of “confidence and credibility to the national and international tourism markets.” Colomer stressed that the tourism sector had
made an “enormous effort” to apply health and safety practices that would back the Valencian Community brand as a reliable, quality holiday destination. Referring to the free hotel accommodation for suspected or confirmed Covid-19 cases, the Tourism chief pointed out that the initiative represented another advantage for the sector at such a “complicated and difficult” time.

A weekend of fires

THREE forest fires broke out inland within the space of four hours on Saturday August 8. These occurred in Castell de Castells and Guadalest although the most virulent occurred in the inland Marina Alta area of Vall de Gallinera. Flames destroyed 160 hectares of land, and not 200 as originally feared, said Jose Maria Angel who heads the region’s Safety and Emergencies department. The fire originated in neighbouring Villalonga (Valencia) but spread to Vall de Gallinera where firefighters were hampered by high temperatures reaching 40ºC, the steepness of the area and the danger of the Levante east wind fan-
ning the flames, Angel revealed. Although the fire was surrounded and controlled by Sunday morning with no further evidence of flames, hotspots remained and aircraft continued dousing the area with fire-retardant and water to prevent rekindling, he said. The Emergencies chief praised the coordination between the Administrations involved, not least because it was necessary to attend to fires in Guadalest and Castell de Castells at the same time. The Guadalest fire affecting 200 square metres of pines was extinguished by the early hours of Sunday morning, while in Castell de Castells, where 16 hectares of woodland were burnt, the fire was controlled by 10am.
Growing pains
ALICANTE Province’s cereal harvest has been reduced by 3,000 tons this year, with growers predicting total losses of approximately €1 million.
The growing grain was attacked by fungus after the January storms, followed by more rainfall than usual from the end of March and throughout April.

Right-of-way tussle SEVERAL Les Rotes residents complained to Denia Town Hall after a neighbour tried to block access to their own homes. According to the local Spanish media, they were horrified when work began on an automatic sliding barrier. Once in place, they pointed out to the municipal authorities, they would not be able to reach their own properties via a road they had always used without problems. Denia Town Hall took immediate action by halting work on the barrier, although a lawyer who represents the property-owner suggested in the local Spanish media that the road is private. It is not a right-of-way, he allegedly claimed, implying that a legal battle could soon ensue.

Doing nicely, thank you ALTEA had 72 per cent occupancy in July, according to statistics from the local hotel and tourist accommodation sector. “These figures can’t compare with the 92 per cent registered in 2019 but, given the exceptional situation created by Covid-19, they aren’t bad,” announced Altea’s Tourism councillor Xelo Gonzalez. The outlook for August was “very good,” the councillor added. “The town hall has been working all these months to convey an image of tranquillity and safety, which we are emphasising with our Information Assistants in the Old Quarter,” she said. Meanwhile the Tourist Info Altea offices attended to 813 enquiries from visitors during August, of whom 78 per cent were Spanish. Most came from the Valencian Community and Madrid, followed by the Basque Region, Castilla-Leon and Castilla la Mancha. The majority of foreign visitors were French, with the remainder coming from the UK, Belgium and the Netherlands.

All together, now! VALENCIAN COMMUNITY political parties have pulled off what their Madrid counterparts have so far failed to do. The regional government’s three-party coalition of the PSOEPodemos-Compromis parties, together with opposition parties, the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos, signed the Alcem-nos (Let’s get up) pact for the Valencian Community’s economic, social and healthcare reconstruction. Ultra-right wing group Vox was not a signee. After the agreement was signed, the Generalitat president Ximo Puig thanked all the parties involved for their good faith and “intense work” but lamented that Vox should have distanced itself from the “practically unanimous”

Bad ending TWO African stowaways, believed to be around 13, were drowned when they jumped from a merchant ship in Valencia port. According to the Spanish press they were killed by the eddies slapping against the ship’s hull as it docked, hampered by their own clothes and luggage. According to some sources, they hardly knew how to swim but rejected the lifebelts they were thrown. They carried no identity documents and pathologists are taking fingerprints and DNA samples in an attempt to identify them. Not only are their identities a mystery, but investigators do not have a clear idea of where the boys stowed away on board the Leto, registered in Liberia. They could have joined the ship in Douala, Cameroon or San Pedro in Ivory Coast.

THE mayor of Villajoyosa appears to have back tracked on a previous warning that drastic measures such as ‘confining the town’ will be taken if coronavirus infections continue to rise. An increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases in Villajoyosa prompted the town hall to call on the ‘responsibility and civic mindedness’ of

But on Monday afternoon, Villajoyosa Council released a further statement claiming it “does not consider confining the population.” Verdú “denied that the confinement of the town is part of his plans due to the
increase in positive cases in the town,” despite the initial statement still appearing on the town hall’s website. The latest press release states “it is not his competence” and he “denounces the sensationalism of some media that

have distorted the information doing irreparable damage to the tourist fabric of the town.” Stressing that Villajoyosa is a “safe city,” the mayor added: “The data is not alarming.” It was added that the 21 active cases in the town represent 0.05 per cent of the entire population and are they are under Public Health supervision.

Resolution of termination of real estate contract CARLOS BAOS WE CAN HELP YOU AS lawyers, when we face a contractual dispute and a possible claim or legal action, related to the possibility of terminating (resolving) a sale contract, in Spanish law it is essential to know article 1124 of the Civil Code (CC), Basically, this says that the dispute can be resolved in the event that one of the parties has not fulfilled its obligations and that the affected party may choose between requiring the fulfilment of the contract or by cancelling provided that damages and interest are paid. This rule must however be interpreted in accordance with article 1504 of the CC, in the case of purchase contract of real estate properties with deferred prices, that is, most real estate
purchase and sale agreements, since normally a deposit is paid at the beginning and the rest of the price is paid, at completion when signing before a notary. Thus, article 1504 says: In the sale of real estate, even if it has been stipulated that due to non-payment of the price in the agreed time, the termination of the contract will take place, the buyer may pay, even after the ter m has expired, if in the meantime it has not been requested judicially or by a notarial deed. Once the request is made, the Judge may not grant a new deadline. Therefore, in such cases, even if the buyer does not pay the rest of the price within the agreed ter m, he may pay it after the deadline, unless he has been instructed separately by a judiciary or a notary. It follows that if we are sellers, who have signed a sales contract
and our buyer does not pay, in order to resolve the contract, it is normal to send a notarial request. This request must be acknowledged by the buyers as if it is not received by them or their legal representatives, it will have no effect. Although, there is no unanimous interpretation on the nature of this request, the vast majority understand that it must be resolutive, that is, that it must express clearly the will to ter minate the contract for non-payment. As has been pointed out by the Spanish Supreme Court, legally it is possible that the situation requires payment to the buyer within a specific period and it also indicates that in case of not doing so, the contract will be understood to be resolved or terminated, that is, a payment and resolution requirement or request contained in the same document. FREE pet kits are being handed out to dog owners in Alicante from last Friday (August 7) to encourage people to keep the streets clean and avoid fines of up to €780. ELDERLY residences in the Valencia Community face fines of up to €60,000 if they fail to have adequate coronavirus prevention measures in place. The Consell from Friday, August 7 approved a decree which sets new sanctions and will ban visits and outings in nursing homes which experience an increase in new cases. The new decree, set by the Ministry of Equality, is aimed at monitoring noncompliance with the measures against the killer virus in residences, day centres, youth centres and other establishments of a social nature. And the hefty fines will be enforced in all premises which don’t meet the guidelines. ‘Serious infractions’ include ‘skipping recommended confinements,’ keeping an employee in the workplace who has tested positive for Covid-19, flouting capacity limitations or carrying out activities that involve ‘crowding of people’ and create a risk of transmission of coronavirus to more than 10 people, ‘espe-
cially if they are over 65 years old, with functional diversity or mental health problems.’ The new ruling also includes ‘minor infractions,’ with fines of up to €600 for breaches of capacity restrictions which affect less people and lack of ‘hygiene and prevention measures.’ In a press conference yesterday, Minister of Health, Ana Barcelo confirmed her department is preparing ‘a resolution that will once again make it possible to suspend visits and departures of residents from residences in those centres that are located in municipalities or health departments with the highest incidence of coronavirus infections.’ She explained the decision will be justified at all times by an epidemiological study and “a resolution will be approved for each specific case.” When asked if there was any data on how many residences and which may be affected, she replied: “Over the next week we will see what those residences may be,” reports Las Provincias.

In 1888 President Rutherford B Hayes noted in his diary that the United States ceased being a government for the people and had been replaced by a ‘government of the corporation, by the corporation, and for the corporation.’ It’s up to the people to question and critically think about the information being given and at the same time to pressure our politicians to get out of their comfort zone and take action.

Boat bursts into flames
CREW RESCUED: The cause of the fire was unknown at the time of going to press. FOUR crew members were rescued from a 15-metre fishing boat which burst into flames two nautical miles off the coast of Villajoyosa. Valencia’s Salvamento Maritime Rescue confirmed the Salvamar Mirfak vessel was despatched at 6.30am on Thursday, August 6, af-
ter reports of a huge ‘column of black smoke’ coming from the stricken boat close to the Alicante port of Villajoyosa. Fishermen on a nearby vessel had already managed to get the four crew members to safety, and Salvamar Mirfak then set about extinguishing the flames. The fishing boat was
completely gutted by the fire and while it remained partly afloat, sources confirmed it was so badly damaged it is likely to sink. The Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service were also at the scene, and transferred the rescued crew all of whom are said to be in ‘good condition’ to the mainland.

Taking no chances POLICE swooped on bars, discos and nightspots throughout the Valencia region last weekend, checking compliance with anti-coronavirus regulations. As they did the previous weekend, officers from all police forces and the Guardia Civil carried out controls in principal tourist areas in Valencia, Alicante and Castellon provinces. The Generalitat police’s Night-time Venues Unit inspected 158 establishments last weekend, resulting in fineable offences on 33 occasions for ignoring Covid-19 health and safety regulations or breaching laws covering nightspots, leisure activities and public spaces. Meanwhile, the National Police unit seconded to the Generalitat identified 420 people and 121 vehicles. They also had to remind 415 individuals of the

Melon-growers losing heart
Prices are lower now. MELON and watermelon growers told the Spanish media that they are “desperate.” The prices they are paid, between five and 15 cents a kilo, are even lower than last year, they said, added to which large-scale robberies are stripping the fields of around 30 per cent of the crop. Sources at an agricultural cooperative in Puzol (Valencia) said they are so disappointed by this year’s showing that some growers are debating whether to bother planting the typical and traditional summer crop next year. “We are defenceless,” the cooperative’s president Mariano Aguilar said. “Those who pay us, pay what they want, which is less each year. And those who rob us, get away with it.” Growers are used to losing the odd melon or so to passers-by, they said, but organised gangs know when to take the ripest fruit growing near the roads at times when there are few people around.

Overweight to heavyweight Jacob’s knock out journey
JACOB SHARP weighed 165 kilos two years ago before shedding a staggering 70 kilos. A new-found passion for boxing and sheer determination has literally transformed his whole life. “I was fat from a kid, I grew up obese,” the 27-year-old, who lives on the Costa Blanca told Euro Weekly News. “I was so shy and wouldn’t have my picture taken. I ate, was lazy and never had any energy. I couldn’t do anything and everything was a chore.” Londoner Jacob, who has set up home in Benidorm, admits at his heaviest he had a 56-inch waist and at 6ft 3 inches, could only buy clothes for large men online. “I knew I had to do something. I tried going to the gym and dieting but nothing happened, I didn’t lose any weight.
“Then I started boxing in January 2018 and forgot about dieting. I just concentrated on the boxing and the weight literally fell off. I was training two hours a day for two years solid. “I found a love for boxing, it’s something I really enjoy and my weight dropped to 95 kilos.” Little did Jacob know that this would be a massive turning point in his life. As his body shape altered, so did his mindsight and life goals. With a natural flair for the sport, Jacob - who has deliberately bulked up to 110 kilos - set his sights on competing in the ring and already has two wins under his belt. The heavyweight added: “I’m now aiming for regionals. I’ve been offered to turn professional but if I do it now, I won’t be able to compete in the Olympics or anything.
“I would rather achieve something before I go professional. It’s very much a business, and I want to get more enjoyment out of it before going too serious.” In just two years, Jacob has already sparred with the top 10 heavyweight boxers, including Artur Szpiika, a Polish professional boxer who challenged once for the WBC heavyweight title against Deontay Wilder in 2016. A major turning point for Jacob came in September 2019 when he met Ilko Kirimov. “He was training for the Valencia championships and needed someone to spar with. He came to Vista Gym in La Nucia where I train to use me for sparring and beat me black and blue. “After that he won the championship and I said to myself ‘I’m going to beat this guy.’ I trained hard and put my name down for a fight in Benidorm and he did

too, thinking he could beat me. But he didn’t, I beat him. “After that I knew I could do anything. “I want to win the Community of Valencia, then the regionals and see what’s next, it could be the whole of Spain. Quick work BENIDORM Town Hall received a €30,494 grant for a new rapid charging-station for electric vehicles. The town hall’s Mobility councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate announced that the town hall will add just under €8,000 to the subsidy from the Valencian Institute for Business Competitiveness (IVACE). Located in Avenida Villajoyosa, it will have the same characteristics as the charging station that now operates in the Avenida de Europa, De Zarate revealed. “At present there are 12 charging stations dis-

Doing it by the book TWENTY-TWO Benidorm establishments have been awarded the SICTED seal for good anti-Covid practices. These are awarded by Spain’s Tourism and Health ministries, in collaboration with the Spain’s Tourist Quality Institute (ICTE), to establishments and businesses adhering to their handbooks and procedures that reduce the spread of Covid-19. A SLICE of a €90,000 cash pie has been made available to associations and non-profit organisations which work in the social health, equality and functional diversity field in Benidorm. Councillor for Social Welfare, Ángela Llorca, confirmed: “We have approved in the Local Government Board the bases that regulate this aid, with which the council intends to continue supporting the social associations of Benidorm that work for the integration and the improvement of the quality of life of the most disadvantaged people or groups or those who require special attention.” A maximum of €12,000 will be given to successful associations, and the processing of this subsidy will be done through the municipal Electronic Office https://sede.benidorm. org.

Clean sweep at schools WITH Benidorm’s state schools due to reopen in under a month, the town hall is stepping up its cleaning schedule. Awnings and barriers are also being put up to prevent gatherings of large numbers of pupils at breaktime. The town hall wants the return to school to be as normal and as safe as possible, notwithstanding the Covid-19 pandemic and as soon as term starts, cleaning will be stepped up in the town’s 13 primaries and five Instituto high schools. This will include cleaning and disinfecting during the school day. Education councillor Maite Moreno, talking to the local Spanish press, explained that this will enable schools to adapt to the “new reality” and the regulations agreed with the regional government so that classes may resume after six months. The town hall is currently negotiating modifications to its contract with the cleaning concessionary as in the past school-cleaning has been carried out in the afternoons, Moreno said.

Aiming to bring recreational sports and competitive sports of the yachting sector closer to residents, the academy is reducing fees for TeuladaMoraira residents. Reductions apply to a course consisting of two hours of theory and four hours’ sailing to obtain an official licence for handling boats of up to six metres and jet-skis with limited engine capacity. There is also a course for jet-ski instructors, qualifying them to work with hire firms, obtaining a federated licence valid throughout Spain. Given the professional

All aboard (at last) FOUR years after Line 9’s Calpe-Denia section was closed on safety grounds, Teulada station has reopened. Onward journeys to Denia or stations in between must still be completed by a bus put on by rail operator FGV, but Line 9 is now operative between Teulada and Benidorm. As with all public transport, masks must be worn, with social distancing observed as far as possible. FGV renovated 11 kilometres of track between the stations, installed the latest signalling and security systems, while overhauling the Ferrandet and Quisi viaducts at a cost of €17 million. All that remains now for the line to reopen is completing what FGV admits

Missing woman located A 78-YEAR-OLD woman, identified by her first name Barbara, was found safe and sound. She went missing on Sunday afternoon from her home in Calle Eucaliptus at around 7pm and was found the next day in the l’Andrago district, about two kilometres away. Worried relatives and friends contacted the police and also asked anyone who had seen Barbara to contact the authorities. Guardia Civil officers from Benissa, Callosa, Calpe and Altea joined in the search, assisted by
the Public Safety Unit (Useseci) from Alicante City, plus a Guardia Civil helicopter assisting from the air. Panico, Sira and Jero, three dogs from the Guardia Civil’s canine unit, also played an important part in helping to scour the Pinar de l’Advocat area where investigators believed Barbara was likely to be. When located next day, Barbara, who has dementia, was found to be in good health although disorientated and dehydrated after spending a night in the open.
Infrastructure grant TEULADA-MORAIRA applied for a €591,672 grant from the Diputacion provincial council. This will be used for municipal projects amounting to €910,264, of which the town hall will provide the remaining €318,595. The cash will be used to install underground rubbish containers, improving storm drains in the centre of Teulada and main drainage in Moraira’s Pla de Mar.
Retail therapy A SHOPPING night will be held in the centre of Moraira today, August 13, where participating shops will remain open between 8pm and 12 midnight, with special offers and live music.

Javea-Denia NEWS Embankment now repaired AMJASA, Javea’s municipal w a t e r c o m p a n y, h a s r e placed waterpipes and a retaining wall beside the Gorgos river. The road there, which had been closed to vehicles for some years, is open to traffic once more, Amjasa announced. The repairs, which cost €121,539, provide more protection for a key section of the domestic network, as the pipeline carries water from the desalination plant to the town. The Gorgos frequently floods during heavy rain and this part of the river had needed attention since 2007 when the embankment collapsed, Amjasa explained. Free Spanish classes JAVEA Town Hall will provide basic and intermediate Spanish classes each week, the Residents’ Help Desk announced. Subsidised by the Diputacion provincial council, the free classes begin on August 31 and continue throughout September. Basic level classes will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10am until 12 noon and intermediate level on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10am and 12 noon. They will take place in the Duanes public library in a large, wellventilated room with all Covid-19 health and safety measures taken into account. Fifteen places are available for each basic and intermediate course and applications, giving personal details and a contact number, should be made via email to help@ajxabia.org before 2pm on Thursday, August 27.
Ashtrays for smokers JAVEA’s town hall, Rotary Club and Club Nautico are targeting beachgoers and boat-owners. Their joint objectives are seabeds and sands without cigarette ends. Ever-present on the beaches these are difficult
to remove with the machinery used for cleaning while smokers on boats pollute the seabed by throwing cigarette ends in the sea. Ten thousand cardboard ashtrays are being distributed on Javea’s beaches
this summer to discourage smokers from stubbing out cigarettes in the sand. Cardboard was chosen deliberately so that if smokers leave the ashtrays on the beach they will not be leaving more plastic behind them. Nevertheless, the organisers hope that the ashtrays will be deposited in special methacrylate containers installed on seafront promenades. This, it is hoped, will demonstrate to smokers that thousands of cigarettes are left on Javea beaches each day. Javea’s Rotary Club was behind the idea, explained local president Luis Santos, as protecting the environment is a principal Rotary objective this year. The Club Nautico has also joined the scheme and will hand out the ashtrays to members. “We have been organising coastal clear-ups for years and we always find more cigarette ends than anything else,” said the Club Nautico’s manager, Luis Nogueroles.

UK job loss potential continues by John Smith WH SMITH, the newsagents which has grown over the decades since its founding in 1792 is considering shedding 1,500 jobs, more than 10 per cent of its work force due to the lockdown. The main area for concern is its UK stores at airports and railway stations as with a hugely reduced footfall, sales have literally plum meted and airport sites in particu lar are expensive to maintain. Things are slightly happier with its US airport operations as the bulk of flights are internal and are
relatively well populated meaning that sales are still at acceptable levels. In a statement on its finances, the company revealed that it ex pected to make a loss of at least £70 million (€77 million) for its fi nancial year ending August com pared to a profit of £155 million (€170 million) in 2019. Despite this, reserves are rela tively good and the company has strong lines of credit so with the potential reduction in staff it be lieves that it can return to profit. Still denying its existence
MILLIONS still dying, hospitals and governments unable to cope, countries that have allowed tourism to resume becoming once again rampant with it - and still numbskulls are denying the existence of this devastating Covid virus. Why do human beings choose to turn a blind eye to events and situations that are blatantly staring them in the face? Do these ostriches not understand that by ignoring the existence of a problem, they will never stand a chance of solving it? Like their overblown feathered counterparts, do they think that when they withdraw their heads all the troubles will have miraculously gone away? Well I have news, they won’t. To my mind, unless something drastic or miraculous occurs, I think this evil malady will be with us for well into next year and possibly beyond. It makes my blood boil to see so many totally ignoring the directives of the health leaders and authorities. I also feel that by advising the over 50’s to stay at home is aiming at the wrong end of the age groups. These are the citizens who have in the main been conforming to the government’s directives and now are being penalised for it. It’s the self-centered youngsters that should be firmly locked

down. But that won’t happen will it? The privileged and uncaring members of present day generations simply won’t comply. We are now experiencing the direct result of the namby pamby’ing leftie luvvies who, over the past 30 years or so, have somehow eased themselves into positions of control and frankly got it all wrong. It has resulted in millions of our youngsters firmly
believing that the world owes them a living and utterly destroyed all their respect for others, particularly their elders. The social media has allowed them to air and spread doctrines based on little, or no knowledge of history or tradition whatsoever, and subsequently instilled in them values so out of touch with reality that they consider the colouring of their pubic hair a deci-
sion of major importance. Sometimes I really am thankful to have reached the age of 81. At least with my future longevity growing shorter and more precarious by the day, I won’t have to experience the total chaos our planet will find itself in when serious decisions need to be made by this bunch of, oh so often ‘offended’ and utterly naïve bunch of selfish wasters. I just hope and pray, that those among them who have received a decent upbringing and retain a true empathy and respect for their fellow human beings, can lift their peers out of the mire they have sunk into. Unfortunately, as these are in a sad minority, I fear most of their efforts will be lost in such a morass of entitled under-achievers and violent criminals that most of their efforts will be completely in vain. real estate market to start recovering during 2021. Following a successful launch in Spain, Bueno plans to expand into France, Italy and Portugal where they will promote the same concept. in most European countries over the next five to seven years. This growth will be driven by an innovative platform and the additional benefits they will be able to offer as their customer base grows. Bueno is currently in dialogue with a number of partners and investors and have had initial talks with one of the white label banking platforms in Germany (white label banking allows companies such as Bueno to work with a selected company which has its own banking licence to ensure customer security). They have had initial talks with a tech insurance company in Luxembourg/Switzerland with the goal to launch Bueno’s own insurance brand under their white label platform. The Bueno team currently consists of six people, with backgrounds from Spanish banks, the financial service industry, technology and sales. They plan to increase to some 50 people within the next 12 to18 months and they have the ambitious goal of becoming a profitable NEO bank within 18 months.

Expats, the Mother Country needs you!
BARRY DUKE I ANTICIPATED a robust reaction to a question I posed on Facebook last week, but I hadn’t bargained for the outpouring of derision and fury it provoked. This is what I posted on the Brexpats in Spain page: ‘How many of you are prepared to return to the UK to help it out in its hour of need? ‘I ask because I received a message on FB that got me thinking about writing a column for Euro Weekly News. The message reads, in part, “it is time for expats to return home and rally to the mother country at its time of need. We have an economy to rebuild and we face huge challenges from the virus, from the shortterm impact of Brexit, and the ‘woke’ fifth columnists undermining us from within”.’ It damn near caused a riot. Within 30 minutes 115 people had left comments, many of
which cannot be repeated in a family newspaper. The page’s administrator was forced to close down the thread when it looked like it was getting completely out of
HELPING OUT: I won’t be one of them. hand. Many excellent points were made, but to my mind the best was posted by Iain Henderson who pounced on the term ‘fifth columnists,’ meaning the enemy within.
He pointed out that the UK ‘isn't at war with the EU ... We are not dealing with spies, saboteurs, or irregular forces. This is a story of a small island
nation which has taken its ball and bat home. It’s now having a childish tantrum as it’s facing a long period out in the cold with no agreement with its biggest trading power.
‘And no. I won’t be going home to help Blighty in its hour of need. This is an act of sabotage of epic proportions and the tragedy is that we have done it to ourselves. John Perry added: ‘I am one of those ‘woke fifth columnists’… We are disenfranchised exiled patriots. We love our country and want the best for it. We came to Spain as Euro Brits. ‘England is presently in the hands of the very worst third rate leadership, governed by Johnson, a pound shop Donald Trump. There is no place for me at the moment there. ‘I expect the union to break up and Brexit to utterly destroy the economy. Covid will simply intensify the disaster already inflicted on it by a half-witted, post-imperialist deluded electorate.’ My own view? Let the thousands of expats who voted to leave the EU return to sort out the current mess and the far bigger one looming on the horizon.

ANTI-MASKERS ARE THE NEW ANTI-VAXXERS: WHAT ABOUT YOU?
ALL over Europe and beyond we’re seeing Covid-19 restrictions lifted, then replaced as infections spike. However, when this is all over, I’d be very interested to see an in-depth survey and analysis of those people who 1) won’t do as they are advised/ requested/required; 2) take it as a personal affront and infringement of their civil liberties to be asked to wear a mask for a very short time; 3) regard it as absolutely essential to go to a pub/ beach/hotel abroad without further delay; 4) have no concept whatsoever of community responsibility. Whenever lockdown is eased a very short period out of a healthy person’s lifetime - why are so many anti-maskers prepared to break the law and gamble with their own and other people’s safety for basically trivial reasons? And presumably there is a
cross-over with the conspiracy theorists/influencers who think the metal strip in a mask is a conductor for 5G and anti-vaxxers - a quarter of Brits - say they might refuse a coronavirus vaccine. Does this matter, you ask? You bet, because their selfishness and stupidity put others at risk, particularly those who can’t have vaccinations for medical reasons. Punishment (denial of NHS services or schooling, for instance) for non-vaccination is a nonstarter, it’d be hard to enforce without added bureaucracy and likely costly court cases. So why not try, as a one-off against this virus (deadly to both health and the economy), the ‘carrot’ instead? Offer, say, some hard cash for each person vaccinated. It would cost a few hundred million pounds, but would likely soon pay for itself. Money talks, possibly louder than influencers, igno-
rance or superstition. Alternatively, if a vaccine becomes widely available, surely all countries will require a certificate of vaccination for entry, as used to be the case for smallpox in many countries before it was eliminated due to a worldwide vaccination programme. Once these anti-vaxxers find they’re unable to travel anywhere other than in their own country, I suspect the problem could disappear... So, where do you stand? OUR VIEW Your choice WE’RE all going on a summer holiday!.. No? Maybe not yet? I do think we all deserve a holiday after the year we have had so far. But is that a possibility? There seems to be many strong opinions on this terrible virus and whether it is getting worse, better or just something we should try to live with. Should travelling be a priority? Can people be trusted to go to a different country and abide by the rules and regulations? We should remember that a holiday is a luxury and also that cheap beer and sunshine aren’t the answers to all our prayers. However, some of us need to break from the old routine, to literally distance ourselves from our everyday life. When will we be able to do that? Nobody has an answer. This uncertainty seems to be perpetuating fear, and constant news updates on figures really stick the boot in. Whilst we are getting riled up and upset about not getting to burn in the sand for a week there are other people who have been parted from their families, missed funerals, lost their jobs and lost their lives. Deep down do we really feel that we deserve a break more than them? The governments have our choices in the palm of their hand. There are some who think that they are crushing us and others who think they are saving us. The majority may feel that we should put our trust in them and let them take control, it would certainly free us of some worries. Others believe it is a well-planned conspiracy to control the world, are they getting a bit carried away? Before you think of flying off into the sun please think, are you ready for any eventuality? Is it really worth it? If so, go right ahead.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, On Friday, July 24, my wife and I had come out of Mercadona and into the outside parking area near the entrance. When she suddenly collapsed and her head hit the floor. A young Spanish couple in a car stopped and jumped out and called an ambulance as she was unable to move. They stayed with us and used a hand fan to keep Stella (my wife) cool in the fierce heat. I would like to say a mighty big thanks to this couple for the quick reaction and help they gave us and it just shows that there are people in this world that care and have feelings for others. Never got their names but they know who they are and I just hope that they manage to read your paper or somebody who knows them passes on this message. THANK YOU AGAIN.

Your wish Hi Euro Weekly News, Please, please, bring back the Hexagram puzzle, for myself and most of my friends, this is our favourite puzzle of the week, as it is sometimes really hard and other times quite easy, it seems to always be the one that is left out in favour of the Funeral Plan advertisement. We really enjoy the rest of the paper, especially Leapy Lee, always controversial, but spot on with his comments, Mike Senker is also very entertaining. The Authoress, doesn’t seem to be in this week but her comments are also good, the Letters page is always up to the minute. In all, it’s our favourite weekly paper, but please us all even more by reinstating the Hexagram puzzle, once and for all.
Heartbreaking Story of a British Expat who Flew to the UK from Spain’s Costa del Sol to Visit his Sick Brother then was Refused Access by the Care Home! We were not allowed see my mum-in-law. Her husband only twice a week, very strict due to Covid. Just the way it is now. They don’t want guests or staff bringing virus in. It is heartbreaking.

POINTS-SCORING AND NAME-DROPPING DAVID WORBOYS “THANK God I am not like other people!” I doubt if even arch-egoist Donald Trump has said this aloud in so many words - at least in public. But I have heard this sentiment of superiority expressed so many times in varying degrees of subtlety. This is the essence of egoism - self-adulation at the expense of others. In this way, friends, acquaintances and strangers alike all become adversaries. In my book ‘The English Middle-Class Code,’ I suggested there are several ways of projecting self-image. And they involve both boasting and putting other people down. The most obvious ploys are name-dropping, points-scoring, criticising and, finally, posing. Name-droppers often cite

Unfortunately, many of them focus on promoting the writer’s self-image by dwelling on his successes or her achievements. Too frequently, those who write mainly about themselves are not really interested in anything or anybody else. They
therefore have little of substance to say. And so they emphasise their good fortune their wealth, their knowledge, their experiences and their ‘connections’ in the hope of invoking envy. But, apart from friends and family, who wants to know? The need to be right means criticising, which means somebody else must be wrong - or better still, made to feel inadequate. RUNNING is free, you can do it anywhere, it bur ns more calories than any other mainstream exercise and it can reduce your risk of long-term illnesses, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke. It can also boost your mood and keep your weight under control. Okay, you have bought those new trainers and are keen to get out for a nice jog, but here are some top tips for beginners. It really helps to have someone about the same level of ability as you to run with. You’ll en-
courage each other when you’re not so keen to run. You’ll feel that you do not want to let your running partner down, and this will help motivate you. Firstly, to avoid getting a stitch do not eat anything solid about two hours before your run and only drink in small quantities. Many musclerelated injuries are caused by people failing to warm up before exercise. Start each run with a gentle warm-up of at least five minutes. This can include quick walking, marching on the spot, knee lifts, side stepping and climbing stairs.

Banish back pain BAD posture can affect your whole body. But the back and shoulders are usually the areas that suffer the most. Back pain has now become one of the most common health complaints in society, and on many occasions is due to bad habits. Hours sitting at a computer or standing at work or even walking without maintaining an upright posture can create tension in the back and shoulders that end up causing uncomfortable pain. Here are some techniques and exercises that can be practised daily to correct it. Wall slides A simple exercise to strengthen the waist and correct the posture of the entire spine. It consists of supporting the back straight against the wall and sliding slowly, pressing the back on the wall, until your knees are flexed. Now hold the pose for 10 seconds. Do five to 10 reps a day. Torso tilts This practice is used in yoga as a stretching exercise. Standing with your back straight and your feet together, raise your arms until the palms of your hands come together above your head. Then tilt your torso from left to right, holding for five seconds on each side, to allow for stretch-

For people with mental health issues, it can be an excruciating and exhausting experience. Daily life is enough of a struggle for us to cope with without additional pressures that poor mental health can bring. Small things can make a difference to anyone when they are not feeling themselves. When you’re feeling down, it doesn’t always take winning the lottery to turn your day around does it? It’s the little things in life that we so often take for granted! That passing compliment on a new outfit, a hug from a loved one or being praised for something you have accomplished, no matter how small it may seem. These small things can make a difference to anyone when they are not feeling themselves, even more so for people with mental health difficulties. When I’m in that dark place and all I see is the world against me, a small message turns my whole day around. From a personal point of view; I am very open about what I
have. I keep no secrets about my condition. If anyone asks, I am more than willing to tell them. By being this way I’ve found the true friends and family who stick by me. They accept everything, from my weird and wacky sense of humour to understanding the way I react and being able to deal with curve balls I can so frequently throw. Through thick and thin; these are the people I choose to surround myself with. The people who have the biggest impact on my life, the ones who I can rely on. Having bipolar disorder means that I could be in a different frame of mind from one day to the next, sometimes I can change within the same day! I have days where I want to be alone; I’m normally a very social person, if I go quiet, it’s a key indicator I may not be myself. Having that message pop up on your phone “Hi! Are you okay? I haven’t heard from you!” is sometimes all I need. It might seem insignificant, but when I’m in that dark place and all I see is the world against me, it turns my whole day around. To those loved ones; family and friends of anyone who is struggling with their mental health and to us fighters and survivors who are or have struggled with their own, remember that we cannot do everything on our own. It’s terribly hard for loved ones to see us in distress but it’s equally hard for us. You mustn’t see us as just ‘being difficult’ or ‘hard work’ because everyone needs a little help every now and again. You don’t have to go to the ends of the earth to help us, just show that you care and show that there is something for us to fight for. Much love, Ms Bipolar x

Lost in a Masquerade GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN the ‘new normal’, we’re becoming quite divided. While we show something of a united front, w e s t a n d s t ro n g a g a i n s t t h e dreaded virus, or more likely, the dreaded aftermath. We clapped for frontline workers, continue to sanitise our hands, until the skin is almost non-existent, and of course we try to remain as socially distant as possible, even in i m p o s s i b l e s i t u a t i o n s . H o w e v e r, there’s a major division between those who believe in Covid-19 and those who call it the Scamdemic. On Monday, I was in Marbella and found a fantastic little bar, selling Lavazza coffee. This may seem mundane, but as someone who’s lived in Italy for many years, and also one who drinks way too much coffee, this find is like winning the lottery. Spain is fantastic for many things, sadly, coffee isn’t one. I love strong coffee, but the flavour of café solo is way too bitter. When I ask for frothed milk, I receive warm milk. I start my day with one cappuccino, followed by uncountable espressi. I’m pretty wired most of the time, but why change the habit of a lifetime? Anyhow, I bought a take out espresso and found a spot where I could stand, socially distant, remove my mask, and down my fix. It’s a long time since I’ve been ‘papped’, as they say, so when a guy with a camera arrived and took my photo, I was shocked. At first I assumed he was photographing the buildings. But no, he continued snapping and told me it’s illegal to remove my mask. I laughed, and explained I was trying to drink my coffee. “I’ll make a police report!” he steamed, ironically wearing a filthy mask, with his nose uncovered. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been wearing a mask since March, will continue to. But at what point does removing it becoming such an issue for someone else? My friend felt it would be funny to
We try to remain socially distant. take photos with his phone, much to the annoyance of Mr Busybody. It all got heated, so I finished my coffee, replaced my mask and moved on. Clearly the guy had bigger issues to address. Later, I was standing in-line at the ATM, when the lady next to me asked why I was wearing a mask. “It’s a fake virus?” she informed. I didn’t respond, but that didn’t stop her. She went on, “I must regi s t e r w i t h t h e c h a t f o r u m , Tr u t h , and learn the reality. The leaders are taking over, soon we’ll be microchipped”. I prayed the guy in front of me would hurry, so I could escape. In one day, I learned a lot: there are the believers and the suspicious. Those wearing masks, not because we’re forced to, but because we care for others. Then there are those who feel it’s time to become a law enforcer. Let me put it on record; the next person to stick a camera in my face without asking can expect to have it smashed. Unless of course, it’s Patrick Demarchelier.

Amongst the plethora of unpleasant symptoms trumpeting the advent of this little understood period of a woman’s life, two stand out as being the real bitches of many a dog day afternoon spent grappling with hot flushes, towering rage and crumpled weeping; they are the phantoms of forgetfulness (or the many pauses of the menopause) and fat, fat that suddenly appears where fat has no right appearing, increasing the size of girth and ass and decreasing ones visibility. Fat spreads around the middle and no amount of exercise will shift the little b****. Welcome muffin top goodbye two piece bikini and cute little purple sequined crop top (a shopping faux pas best forgotten about). The two Fs creep in like uninvited guests around the 45 age mark and set

up home above the garage. If you thought the forgetfulness of pregnancy was bad welcome to the many pauses of menopause dear lady readers. Not only does one march purposefully into a room on a mission soon forgotten but one ceases to recognise the whole room and is left frozen like an errant laptop during an illegal streaming of True Detective (another symptom is the desire to watch Matthew Mcconaughey on a loop but not Magic Mike due to the hot flushes... far too dangerous). I once even forgot my son’s name ... although that is nothing compared to the utter confusion caused during my misspent youth by a man I swear I had never met, greeting me warmly and proceeding to recount episodes of our relationship. It turned out that I had spent the whole weekend with him on a shared pub crawl... luckily we did not marry or buy a house together. Of course nowadays the muffin top and the red face and grumpy persona protects me from such japes, that and my
middle aged lady cloak of invisibility (which I imagine to be crocheted in a patchwork of luminous colours). No longer being deemed worthy of unwelcome flirtations is at first mildly irritating and then entirely refreshing. I now eat and drink less and exercise more yet my middle age spread keeps on spreading. I lose words halfway through a sentence and never remember a name once given and don’t get me started on instructions and directions. I may look as if I am listening but in reality I am pondering the evolution of mouths and the delightful little freckle on the nose of the person speaking. I may blame the menopause but in actual fact I have never been very good at instructions, I am more of a kinesthetic learner and would rather ‘do’ than listen as I have a mind full of extraneous information which takes far too long to sift through, a bit like my documents draw. As to the battle of the muffin top… hoist the white flag. Cava and Cake anyone? Toodle pip!
Does the term alpha male need to exist?
An Open Book IRONICALLY, what irritates me tends to inspire me. Last weekend, I read an article in The Times Magazine called ‘The Hardman Hot List’. A profile of the w o r l d ’s t o u g h e s t m e n based not only on their previous career trajectories, soldiers, marines and survival experts, but also on their alpha male status. The jour nalist attempts to create a self-deprecating portrayal of these men. Throwing in jokes about their muscles and how he is secretly terrified of them. He even borders on flirtation, describing them as if they have been produced on some super human factory line. Laboratory experiment aside, he also encourages his reader to view his subjects like Michaelangelo’s David. A divine image. After all, the dictionary definition of an alpha male is ‘the most power ful and successful male in any

group’. Success and power are rather difficult to quantify which renders the alpha male status as unattainable. A fallacy which should have been left behind many years ago. On one occasion, the article appears to convey a rather condescending description of these men. Referring to one of them as "not conventionally handsome". After years of vilifying a woman’s image, are we now going to do this to men? What is conventionally handsome anyway? It is interesting, nevertheless, to see that this is somewhat a role reversal. Then again, it is only perpetuating another negative cycle when the whole context of what masculinity means ought to be challenged. Not to mention body image. If the writer of the article was straight, I can see how it would have been liberating to write about men in such a coquettish fashion. On the other hand, a more nuanced look at masculinity would have unpacked a more meaningful discourse.
The article is a missed opportunity. Imagine if these alpha males opened up about having battled with PTSD, or if they spoke about their mental health. Imagine if there were Black or Asian men in the list or an openly gay individual. There was nothing indicative of what it is to be a man in 2020. As Generation Z vocalises their advanced political views towards gender, it seems, by reading this article, we have travelled back ten years. We can’t assume that to be an alpha male you have to be a white heterosexual man. It begs the question, does the term ‘alpha male’ need to exist? Thankfully, there was another article in the same publication that spoke about one man who is unable to do ten press-ups. It cheered me up with its undeniable relatability. Providing some perspective, albeit with humour, on the increased pressure men feel to attain what society considers to be the perfect image.

GUIDED tours of the Roman site of Banys de la Reina have been relaunched by Calpe Council this week and will take place every Tuesday until September 29. These are free tours by the archaeologist Alicia Luján who will explain the history and importance of this enclave. The Banys de la Reina is one of the most important archaeological sites in their category in Roman Hispania. It dates from the end of the second century AD and was made up of a group of luxury Roman villas, of which its architectural design and mosaics stand out, made up of black and white tesserae; and marbles originating from far away places. It is located near the sea and receives its name from rafts carved into the rock, which were used to contain fish. Groups of 20 people will be organised who must keep social distance and wear a mask. The visits will last one hour and will depart from Molí del Morelló. To take part, register in advance at the town’s tourist office.

LEARN the history of the modernist gardens of Villa Marco in El Campello in a free, bilingual tour which takes place on Tuesday, August 18. At the beginning of the 20th century, it acquired a residential character and its then owner, René Bardin, endowed it with a modernist style with curious influences from French colonial art that differentiate it from the rest of the estates that are still preserved in the region. Pulling all this along is a zingy little 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine in the most powerful of the three available versions. Urge it on and the sound turns a touch diesel-like but there's no denying the resulting performance. Showing a little restraint pays dividend at the pumps, with a week and
500 miles of mixed road driving producing a wallet friendly 6l/100km (47.0mpg) on the trip computer. You can have your Crossland with a diesel engine and better economy still but with most of the cars finding private buyers you can’t imagine many people wanting the extra expense (and, nowadays, raised eyebrows from the neighbours). Not that you can’t spend more on even the top model if you fancy, from premium metallic paint (€722/£650) and leather seat trim with electric adjustment for the driver’s seat (€1,871/£1,685) to a safety pack that includes emergency city braking (€555/ £500) and rear camera with parking sensors front and rear (€505/£455). A proper spare tyre at a reasonable €133 (£120) would be top of my tick list of extras, thereby banishing the standard tyre sealant kit forever.

Speedy summer tour THE new GR Yaris is breaking cover in the UK over the last few weeks with a summer tour of Toyota retailers. The thoroughbred performance hatchback developed directly from Toyota Gazoo Racing’s World Rally Championship-winning experience, made its debut ahead of its official launch in October. The display has given potential customers and those who have already reserved their car the chance to take a first close-up look at the model ‘in the metal’. Each Toyota Centre operated a personal appointment service, so everyone had plenty of time to take in the detail and learn more from the specialist sales teams about the GR Yaris’s perfor-
mance and equipment specifications. The car is a pre-production model and was on static display only. Details of driving opportunities in production-ready cars will be announced at a future date.

GERMAN giant BMW has launched a new, more powerful plug-in hybrid version of the 5 Series called the 545e xDrive. The xDrive shares the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the newly launched X5 xDrive45e SUV, with a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, an 11.2kWh battery pack and an electric motor, giving a maximum output of 387bhp and 600Nm of torque. BMW’s most powerful PHEV powertrain gives the 5 Series a 0–62mph time of 4.7 seconds, a top speed of 155mph and, more importantly, a maximum electric range of 33 miles.
62mph can be achieved in less than 5.5 seconds. Customers opting for the Circuit Pack version of GR Yaris gain further performance-focused features, including 18inch BBS forged alloy wheels with Michelin Sport Pilot 4s tyres, circuit-tuned GR suspension, two Torsen limitedslip differentials and red-painted brake callipers.
Fuel economy figures for the xDrive come in between 117.7–166.1mpg. CO2 emissions figures are between 38–54g/km of CO2. With the new model based on the facelifted 5 Series, it has gained all the cosmetic and technology upgrades fitted to the updated standard model. So, buyers get a slightly tweaked radiator grille, slimmer LED headlamps and updated front and rear bumpers. Inside, there is added support for Android Auto to its 12.3-inch infotainment system. The 545e xDrive forms a key part of BMW’s latest electrification strategy, which is focused on expanding
its pure-electric, PHEV and mild-hybrid models. BMW hopes that 50 per cent of European sales will be electrified by 2023 - although the brand will continue to improve and develop its combustion-engined models too - as BMW is aware that not all of its customers are ready to make the jump to an electric powertrain yet. BMW sees PHEVs as a compromise between the convenience of petrol power and fully electric. BMW has attempted to make the new 545e act like an EV by installing new geo-fencing technology that automatically forces the saloon to run in pure-electric mode when the car recognises it’s in a built-up area.
