CLUB Running Playas de Torre del Mar aims to convert the town of Torre del Mar into the capital of the Nordic Walking with a special event organised for this Sunday, August 16, for those who want to learn about the sport. Participants will learn basic techniques of Nordic Walking, to allow them to take part in this sport that can be practised alone or with someone, on any surface, and at any time of the year. The activity will begin at 8.30am from the roundabout of the Torre del Mar Lighthouse. Registration will be free and includes Nordic Walking poles, so that those who do not have any may use some loaned for the occasion.
IN the early hours of Tuesday August 11, a man went out into the streets of Malaga asking for help from the National Police to aid a neighbour with a baby girl who was not breathing. The little girl, just one month old, did not respond to initial stimuli from the parents. The police observed the child was not breathing and had begun to turn purple. The officers quickly took control of the situation and began to practise resuscitation on the girl. After a few minutes of heart massage, the ba-

Public Holiday Reminder AUGUST 15 is a public holiday throughout Spain and is ‘Dia de la Asunción de la Virgen María.’ It is one of the biggest religious festivals across the country involving the Marian feast day. The holiday is based on the Christian belief that God raised the Virgin Mary to heaven reuniting her with her soul after her death. The holiday has been kept since the fourth century AD, as an attempt to replace an earlier pagan harvest festival. This is why it is still called the ‘Feast of Our Lady of
the Harvest’ in certain regions of Europe. The Dia de la Asunción de la Virgen María, celebrations begin in Spain on August 11 and culminate on August 15. The holiday usually coincides with several ferias throughout Spain, however due to Covid-19 health and safety regulations, all group gatherings have unfortunately been cancelled. Although the holiday falls on a Saturday this year it may lead to possible closures and reduced hours of supermarkets and businesses.

TORROX Town Hall has enabled four different smoke-free spaces along more than nine kilometres of coastline. This year the town hall has joined the project of the Andalucian Network of Sanitary Services and Smoke-Free Spaces (RASSELH). These spaces are in areas in which the project had already begun: Playa de Ferrara, sports area; Playa del Cenicero and Paseo Marítimo en El Morche and Playa de El Peñoncillo. The mayor, Óscar Medina, has stated that “promoting healthy
lifestyle habits, collaborating in improving health and quality of life, as well as reducing pollution, were our motivation to define smoke-free zones on our beaches. We share these objectives with the RASSELH project, with which they also seek to improve the image of the Andalucian coasts.” In addition to the correct delimitation of these areas, by adhering to this project, the town hall will use signs to inform visitors about the benefits of avoiding smoke and tobacco products.

NEW FUNDS: Restarting the tram service is a priority.
THE government team in the Velez-Malaga Town Hall has not thrown in the towel in its attempt to get the tram service, which was halted in June 2012, up and running. The then mayor, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, claimed it was “a ruin for the municipal coffers.” Since then, Antonio Moreno Ferrer has been repeating that one of his priorities was to restore the tram service. However,
more than five years later, no progress has been made. All attempts have been in vain. During the last mandate, the works to repair the damaged infrastructures, valued at about €2 million, were put out to tender, but nobody snapped it up. Negotiation with the Junta de Andalucía has not progressed either, so the regional administration continues to consider the Veleño tram system as

García Gilabert has presented the special programme of the 2020 festivities that will run until August 15 and under the motto: ‘Volveremos a juntarnos’ or ‘We will get together again’ with a festive atmosphere in honour of the Virgen, “so we have decided to carry out this programme in which the streets, shops and restaurants of Almuñecar, which will be filled with life and joy,” he said. Home rehab THE councillor for Housing in Nerja, Nieves Atencia, has reported that the Junta has approved the Call for the 2020 Municipal Housing Rehabilitation Programme. A total of €140,000 has been allocated to this, doubling the budget of the previous programme. This is an agreement included
among the measures of the Municipal Shock Plan in the face of the coronavirus crisis. The councillor points out that applications may be submitted from the day of publication of the announcement in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia. On the other hand, remember that the beneficiaries will receive a municipal subsidy of up to 50 per cent of the budget for the execution of the work. The limit for this is €3,000. Atencia encourages residents who are interested in doing repair work in the kitchens, bathrooms or other units of their homes, to submit their requests once the term begins.

ONE of Spain’s most famous actors, Antonio Banderas, has tested positive for Covid as cases in Andalucia continue to rise. The Malaga actor announced this unfortunate diagnosis on Monday, August 10, his 60th birthday. The Hollywood star posted an official statement via his social media account explaining that “he wished to make” his coronavirus diagnosis “public” and that he wished to spend his milestone birthday in quarantine. THE Municipal Youth Centre of the Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall becomes a pioneering facility by offering the free use of a recording studio to launch demos of local groups, according to the councillor for the Youth Department, Antonio José Martín. It is about “promoting the cultural creation of our groups by giving them the opportunity to record a demo in a professional studio through this initiative aimed at the 14 groups that currently use the centre’s rehearsal rooms,” says Martín. The demo, made up of four songs, “provides musicians with a business card that helps them promote their songs,” says the mayor.
The recording studio has the necessary equipment to record the first demo at no cost and with the assistance of a professional sound technician to make the recording. It has a mixing desk, studio monitors, microphones for drums, bass and guitar, and computers. “The essential requirement to access the CMJ recording studio is to carry out rehearsals at the Municipal Youth Centre,” said the mayor. Suspension bridge
ADAPTED AREA: Workers begin improvements through the Gran Senda. WORK began last week for the installation of a suspension bridge of almost 50 metres over the Almanchares riverbed, in the area known as El Saltillo, which connects the municipalities of Canillas de Aceituno and Sedella through the Gran Senda de Málaga. In addition to this action, footbridges and trails are being adapted to improve and make the route of stage 7 of the Gran Senda more attractive, in the section that runs between both municipalities. The works are expected
to be completed in the autumn, coinciding with the beginning of the peak hiking season in the province. Ortega explained that the Diputación has invested almost €600,000 in improving the área. As well as the 46-metre-long suspension bridge over the Almanchares River, some metal walkways that have existed for a few years are being adapted for hiking, located more than 100 metres high, built on rocky outcrops and old masonry walls where an old ditch runs.
ON Sunday, August 9, a devastating fire ripped through the Lazy Days Mobile Home Park in Mollina, Malaga where almost a hundred British families lived. It has been discovered that the terrifying fire practically destroyed everything, leaving only about 20 of the approximately 70 mobile homes standing. After the firefighting teams were able to control the fire, some of the residents who had been evicted returned to the place and were horrified to find that there was nothing left of what had been their homes until now. THREE warehouses in the Guadalhorce industrial estate, Malaga, have been discovered selling counterfeit clothing. An inspection by National Police officers took place on Thursday August 6, of three separate warehouses as part of operation ‘Murma.’ During the inspection a total of 217 counterfeit textile garments have been seized. Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL LAST week a judge ruled out against Extremadura’s local government’s confinement and reunion decree. According to the Spanish constitution, the freedom of movement can only be ‘limited’ in a State of Alarm and this could also be debatable. Nevertheless, it seems that politicians are using Covid19 as a carte blanche to do what they think best; without any questioning from the general public, just a few voices from some doctors, biologists, sociologists and psychologists who are totally against the measures which are being taken. However, they say that our society is the most informed in history, but in reality, it is probably the most deceived. Nowadays, we believe we are infor med, with knowledge and with the freedom that allows us to make our

own decisions, but this might not be the case. People, in general, like to inform themselves in a comfortable way, sitting on their sofa and without making great intellectual efforts. Therefore, television, papers, and social media are the preferred mediums, and those who want to control
our opinion know that. As a result, they inform us through the news and teach us what we should think through series, movies, and major Hollywood productions. They begin to show us the way from a young age with cartoons and video games. We must have in mind that the most important media
groups are owned by just a few families, who in turn own the most powerful corporations on the planet. You may ask yourself, where do our politicians fit in in all this? Well, as an example, the major media groups have received grants from the government during Covid-
19, which doesn’t make much sense as these groups have no financial problems, as they are always boasting about how well they are doing. These major media groups as stated above belong to some of the world’s major corporations using their foundations to circulate budgets superior to many countries’ gross domestic product. In 1888 President Rutherford B Hayes noted in his diary that the United States ceased being a government for the people and had been replaced by a ‘government of the corporation, by the corporation, and for the corporation.’ It’s up to the people to question and critically think about the information being given and at the same time to pressure our politicians to get out of their comfort zone and take action.

EIB Fights Pollution SPAIN is receiving a great deal of funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the latest announcement shows that it will provide €95 million for a number of urban regeneration projects in Barcelona. A significant percentage of this investment will be to create a new concept of housing where the majority of vehicle traffic is only allowed around the perimeter of the neighbourhood with priority given to pedestrians and where cars are allowed, speeds will be carefully controlled.

UK job loss potential continues by John Smith WH SMITH, the newsagents which has grown over the decades since its founding in 1792 is considering shedding 1,500 jobs, more than 10 per cent of its work force due to the lockdown. The main area for concern is its UK stores at airports and railway stations as with a hugely reduced footfall, sales have literally plum meted and airport sites in particu lar are expensive to maintain. Things are slightly happier with its US airport operations as the bulk of flights are internal and are
relatively well populated meaning that sales are still at acceptable levels. In a statement on its finances, the company revealed that it ex pected to make a loss of at least £70 million (€77 million) for its fi nancial year ending August com pared to a profit of £155 million (€170 million) in 2019. Despite this, reserves are rela tively good and the company has strong lines of credit so with the potential reduction in staff it be lieves that it can return to profit. The only way this increase can have the appearance of legality is if it is included in the proposed community budget for the following year. I am supposing that you received a copy of the budget before the AGM. And we suppose the committee discussed it pre viously. If one of the budget items is the president’s gratu ity and the budget is approved without dissent, this seems to cover the issue. If nobody noticed that the president’s payment had been increased, it has been passed as part of the budget. This covers the legal side of it. The trans parency leaves something to be desired because the mem bers really had no opportunity to object to the higher gra tuity.

Management cuts IN a bid to cut costs, the NatWest Bank in the UK is believed to be about to reduce its senior management team by at least three as it looks to save around £250 million (€275 million) during 2020.

MILLIONS still dying, hospitals and governments unable to cope, countries that have allowed tourism to resume becoming once again rampant with it - and still numbskulls are denying the existence of this devastating Covid virus. Why do human beings choose to turn a blind eye to events and situations that are blatantly staring them in the face? To my mind, unless something drastic or miraculous occurs, I think this evil malady will be with us for well into next year and possibly beyond. It makes my blood boil to see so many totally ignoring the directives of the health leaders and authorities. I also feel that by advising the over 50’s to stay at home is aiming at the wrong end of the age groups. These are the citizens who have in the main been conforming to the government’s directives and now are being penalised for it. It’s the self-centered youngsters that should be firmly locked

down. But that won’t happen will it? The privileged and uncaring members of present day generations simply won’t comply. We are now experiencing the direct result of the namby pamby’ing leftie luvvies who, over the past 30 years or so, have somehow eased themselves into positions of control and frankly got it all wrong. It has resulted in millions of our youngsters firmly
believing that the world owes them a living and utterly destroyed all their respect for others, particularly their elders. The social media has allowed them to air and spread doctrines based on little, or no knowledge of history or tradition whatsoever, and subsequently instilled in them values so out of touch with reality that they consider the colouring of their pubic hair a deci-
sion of major importance. Sometimes I really am thankful to have reached the age of 81. At least with my future longevity growing shorter and more precarious by the day, I won’t have to experience the total chaos our planet will find itself in when serious decisions need to be made by this bunch of, oh so often ‘offended’ and utterly naïve bunch of selfish wasters. I just hope and pray, that those among them who have received a decent upbringing and retain a true empathy and respect for their fellow human beings, can lift their peers out of the mire they have sunk into. Unfortunately, as these are in a sad minority, I fear most of their efforts will be lost in such a morass of entitled under-achievers and violent criminals that most of their efforts will be completely in vain. ANTI-MASKERS ARE THE NEW ANTI-VAXXERS: WHAT ABOUT YOU?
ALL over Europe and beyond we’re seeing Covid-19 restrictions lifted, then replaced as infections spike. However, when this is all over, I’d be very interested to see an in-depth survey and analysis of those people who 1) won’t do as they are advised/ requested/required; 2) take it as a personal affront and infringement of their civil liberties to be asked to wear a mask for a very short time; 3) regard it as absolutely essential to go to a pub/ beach/hotel abroad without further delay; 4) have no concept whatsoever of community responsibility. Whenever lockdown is eased a very short period out of a healthy person’s lifetime - why are so many anti-maskers prepared to break the law and gamble with their own and other people’s safety for basically trivial reasons? And presumably there is a
cross-over with the conspiracy theorists/influencers who think the metal strip in a mask is a conductor for 5G and anti-vaxxers - a quarter of Brits - say they might refuse a coronavirus vaccine. Does this matter, you ask? You bet, because their selfishness and stupidity put others at risk, particularly those who can’t have vaccinations for medical reasons. Punishment (denial of NHS services or schooling, for instance) for non-vaccination is a nonstarter, it’d be hard to enforce without added bureaucracy and likely costly court cases. So why not try, as a one-off against this virus (deadly to both health and the economy), the ‘carrot’ instead? Offer, say, some hard cash for each person vaccinated. It would cost a few hundred million pounds, but would likely soon pay for itself. Money talks, possibly louder than influencers, igno-
rance or superstition. Alternatively, if a vaccine becomes widely available, surely all countries will require a certificate of vaccination for entry, as used to be the case for smallpox in many countries before it was eliminated due to a worldwide vaccination programme. Once these anti-vaxxers find they’re unable to travel anywhere other than in their own country, I suspect the problem could disappear... So, where do you stand? Guadalupe - the Royal Monastery at the heart of Spanish history SET in the heart of the region of Extremadura about an hour’s drive from the historic Renaissance town of Caceres, the pretty village of Guadalupe is a remarkable destination in its own right. While its cobbled streets are lined with striking buildings that show the evidence of many centuries of history, the reason people come from far and wide is to see the magnificent building right at its centre - the Sanctuary-Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Founded by King Alfonso XI of Castille in the 14th century, it is a truly exceptional edifice that has been added to and lavishly embellished down the years. In fact it is regarded so highly that it has been named as a UN World Heritage Site. It became Spain’s Royal Monastery, where the great and good gathered amidst some of the most magnificent religious art and exquisite gold, and silverware. This was not simply a religious house, for it was at the heart of power. It was here that the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, granted Christopher Columbus an audience that would eventually lead to the discovery of the Americas. Exceptional blend Architecturally, it is an exceptional blend
of differing styles. The 14th-15th century Mudejar church and cloister is particularly fine, with its intricate façade setting a striking tone. The interior nave and two side aisles are notable for their fine vaulting and feature richly ornamented altars and tombs. The sacristy is renowned for a series of paintings by Zurbarán and magnificent wall paintings that seem to leap out from the plain canvas of the architecture itself. It was built between 1638 and 1647 and provides a contrast to the earlier periods. Moving through the sacristy the Chapel of Santa Catalina of Alejandria is home to some imposing tombs that date to the 17th century. It is also packed with reliquaries and exquisite works of art. Entering into the Camarin de la Vigen you will find an octagonal room decorated in baroque style. Head up the stairs and the star of the show awaits - Guadalupe’s famous black Madonna. Here a monk takes over from the usual guide to present the statue to and bless visitors. The statuette is richly clothed and in her arms holds a baby Jesus - also black. It is the most emblematic symbol of the monastery - and for many Catholics the most holy part of the visit.

On Monday, I was in Marbella and found a fantastic little bar, selling Lavazza coffee. This may seem mundane, but as someone who’s lived in Italy for many years, and also one who drinks way too much coffee, this find is like winning the lottery. Spain is fantastic for many things, sadly, coffee isn’t one. I love strong coffee, but the flavour of café solo is way too bitter. When I ask for frothed milk, I receive warm milk. I start my day with one cappuccino, followed by uncountable espressi. I’m pretty wired most of the time, but why change the habit of a lifetime? Anyhow, I bought a take out espresso and found a spot where I could stand, socially distant, remove my mask, and down my fix. It’s a long time since I’ve been ‘papped’, as they say, so when a guy with a camera arrived and took my photo, I was shocked. At first I assumed he was photographing the buildings. But no, he continued snapping and told me it’s illegal to remove my mask. I laughed, and explained I was trying to drink my coffee. “I’ll make a police report!” he steamed, ironically wearing a filthy mask, with his nose uncovered. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been wearing a mask since March, will continue to. But at what point does removing it becoming such an issue for someone else? My friend felt it would be funny to
We try to remain socially distant. take photos with his phone, much to the annoyance of Mr Busybody. It all got heated, so I finished my coffee, replaced my mask and moved on. Clearly the guy had bigger issues to address. Later, I was standing in-line at the ATM, when the lady next to me asked why I was wearing a mask. “It’s a fake virus?” she informed. I didn’t respond, but that didn’t stop her. She went on, “I must regi s t e r w i t h t h e c h a t f o r u m , Tr u t h , and learn the reality. The leaders are taking over, soon we’ll be microchipped”. I prayed the guy in front of me would hurry, so I could escape. In one day, I learned a lot: there are the believers and the suspicious. Those wearing masks, not because we’re forced to, but because we care for others. Then there are those who feel it’s time to become a law enforcer. Let me put it on record; the next person to stick a camera in my face without asking can expect to have it smashed. Unless of course, it’s Patrick Demarchelier.

OUR VIEW Your choice WE’RE all going on a summer holiday!.. No? Maybe not yet? I do think we all deserve a holiday after the year we have had so far. But is that a possibility? There seems to be many strong opinions on this terrible virus and whether it is getting worse, better or just something we should try to live with. Should travelling be a priority? Can people be trusted to go to a different country and abide by the rules and regulations? We should remember that a holiday is a luxury and also that cheap beer and sunshine aren’t the answers to all our prayers. However, some of us need to break from the old routine, to literally distance ourselves from our everyday life. When will we be able to do that? Nobody has an answer. This uncertainty seems to be perpetuating fear, and constant news updates on figures really stick the boot in. Whilst we are getting riled up and upset about not getting to burn in the sand for a week there are other people who have been parted from their families, missed funerals, lost their jobs and lost their lives. Deep down do we really feel that we deserve a break more than them? The governments have our choices in the palm of their hand. There are some who think that they are crushing us and others who think they are saving us. The majority may feel that we should put our trust in them and let them take control, it would certainly free us of some worries. Others believe it is a well-planned conspiracy to control the world, are they getting a bit carried away? Before you think of flying off into the sun please think, are you ready for any eventuality? Is it really worth it? If so, go right ahead.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, On Friday, July 24, my wife and I had come out of Mercadona and into the outside parking area near the entrance. When she suddenly collapsed and her head hit the floor. A young Spanish couple in a car stopped and jumped out and called an ambulance as she was unable to move. They stayed with us and used a hand fan to keep Stella (my wife) cool in the fierce heat. I would like to say a mighty big thanks to this couple for the quick reaction and help they gave us and it just shows that there are people in this world that care and have feelings for others. AS protective face masks have become an essential part of everyone’s life thanks to Covid, many have discovered that regularly wearing one can have uncomfortable sideeffects, mainly the dreaded ‘maskne’. Banish back pain BAD posture can affect your whole body. But the back and shoulders are usually the areas that suffer the most. Back pain has now become one of the most common health complaints in society, and on many occasions is due to bad habits. Hours sitting at a computer or standing at work or even walking without maintaining an upright posture can create tension in the back and shoulders that end up causing uncomfortable pain. Here are some techniques and exercises that can be practised daily to correct it. Wall slides A simple exercise to strengthen the waist and correct the posture of the entire spine. It consists of supporting the back straight against the wall and sliding slowly, pressing the back on the wall, until your knees are flexed. Now hold the pose for 10 seconds. Do five to 10 reps a day. Torso tilts This practice is used in yoga as a stretching exercise. Standing with your back straight and your feet together, raise your arms until the palms of your hands come together above your head. Then tilt

Rotating shoulders This exercise will alleviate accumulated tension in the shoulders and cervical muscles and promote correct posture. Hold the pose for five seconds before exhaling and bring your shoulders down, adopting the initial posture. Do five to 10 reps a day.

For people with mental health issues, it can be an excruciating and exhausting experience. Daily life is enough of a struggle for us to cope with without additional pressures that poor mental health can bring. Small things can make a difference to anyone when they are not feeling themselves. When you’re feeling down, it doesn’t always take winning the lottery to turn your day around does it? It’s the little things in life that we so often take for granted! That passing compliment on a new outfit, a hug from a loved one or being praised for something you have accomplished, no matter how small it may seem. These small things can make a difference to anyone when they are not feeling themselves, even more so for people with mental health difficulties. When I’m in that dark place and all I see is the world against me, a small message turns my whole day around. From a personal point of view; I am very open about what I have. I keep no secrets about my condition. If anyone asks, I am more than willing to tell them. By being this way I’ve found the true friends and fami-
ly who stick by me. They accept everything, from my weird and wacky sense of humour to understanding the way I react and being able to deal with curve balls I can so frequently throw. Through thick and thin; these are the people I choose to surround myself with. The people who have the biggest impact on my life, the ones who I can rely on. Having bipolar disorder means that I could be in a different frame of mind from one day to the next, sometimes I can change within the same day! I have days where I want to be alone; I’m normally a very social person, if I go quiet, it’s a key indicator I may not be myself. Having that message pop up on your phone “Hi! Are you okay? I haven’t heard from you!” is sometimes all I need. It might seem insignificant, but when I’m in that dark place and all I see is the world against me, it turns my whole day around. To those loved ones; family and friends of anyone who is struggling with their mental health and to us fighters and survivors who are or have struggled with their own, remember that we cannot do everything on our own. It’s terribly hard for loved ones to see us in distress but it’s equally hard for us. You mustn’t see us as just ‘being difficult’ or ‘hard work’ because everyone needs a little help every now and again. You don’t have to go to the ends of the earth to help us, just show that you care and show that there is something for us to fight for. M u c h love, Ms Bipolar x

POINTS-SCORING AND NAME-DROPPING DAVID WORBOYS “THANK God I am not like other people!” I doubt if even arch-egoist Donald Trump has said this aloud in so many words - at least in public. But I have heard this sentiment of superiority expressed so many times in varying degrees of subtlety. This is the essence of egoism - self-adulation at the expense of others. In this way, friends, acquaintances and strangers alike all become adversaries. In my book ‘The English Middle-Class Code,’ I suggested there are several ways of projecting self-image. And they involve both boasting and putting other people down. The most obvious ploys are name-dropping, points-scoring, criticising and, finally, posing. Name-droppers often cite

This suggests they fit in with a ‘superior’ group. ‘Lord Balderdash was a close friend of my uncle.’ ‘It was when we attended the Queen’s garden party.’ ‘I met Muhammad Ali at the Plaza Hotel in New York.’ ‘Cassandra was at school with General Mockingbird’s daughter.’ At the slightest opportunity, the name-dropper will jump in to impress the adversary with the joys of travel and experiences by references to places.
‘We love going to Glyndebourne’. ‘Oh, yes; that would be when Reggie and I were in Cairo - there are some wonderful museums there!’ ‘I don’t suppose you’ve been to Vienna yet?’ Points-scoring means gaining points by flaunting. ‘We like the first-class lounge at Heathrow.’ ‘It’s time for our BMW’s MOT; have you ever driven a BMW?’ ‘I’m really pleased with my new camera; I must show it to you.’ It is most effective when, at the same time, the adver-
sary loses points by being put down. ‘Those curtains are so 1970!’ ‘Didn’t he get into Oxford?’ Autobiographies can portray interesting events, opinions and impressions during the author’s lifetime. Unfortunately, many of them focus on promoting the writer’s self-image by dwelling on his successes or her achievements. Too frequently, those who write mainly about themselves are not really interested in anything or anybody else. They
therefore have little of substance to say. And so they emphasise their good fortune their wealth, their knowledge, their experiences and their ‘connections’ in the hope of invoking envy. But, apart from friends and family, who wants to know? The need to be right means criticising, which means somebody else must be wrong - or better still, made to feel inadequate. The adversary therefore has to be contradicted, interrupted or ignored, whether right or wrong. This signifies a complete intolerance of the ideas, tastes and opinions of others. In the view of the egoist the other person is ignorant, illiterate, naive, lazy. Posers are a special category. While they prefer the visible to the vocal approach, they risk being ridiculed aloud in public by anybody humorously ‘challenging’ their pretentiousness. They merit a separate discussion.

Expats, the Mother Country needs you!
BARRY DUKE I ANTICIPATED a robust reaction to a question I posed on Facebook last week, but I hadn’t bargained for the outpouring of derision and fury it provoked. This is what I posted on the Brexpats in Spain page: ‘How many of you are prepared to return to the UK to help it out in its hour of need? ‘I ask because I received a message on FB that got me thinking about writing a column for Euro Weekly News. The message reads, in part, “it is time for expats to return home and rally to the mother country at its time of need. We have an economy to rebuild and we face huge challenges from the virus, from the shortterm impact of Brexit, and the ‘woke’ fifth columnists undermining us from within”.’ It damn near caused a riot. Within 30 minutes 115 people had left comments, many of
which cannot be repeated in a f a m i l y newspaper. The page’s administrator was forced to close down the thread when it looked like it was g e t -
ting completely out of hand. Many excellent points were made, but to my mind the best was posted by Iain Henderson who pounced on the term ‘fifth columnists,’ meaning the enemy within.

He pointed out that the UK ‘isn't at war with the EU ... We are not dealing with spies, saboteurs, or irregular forces. This is a story of a small island
nation which has taken its ball and bat home. It’s now having a childish tantrum as it’s facing a long period out in the cold with no agreement with its biggest trading power.
‘And no. I won’t be going home to help Blighty in its hour of need. This is an act of sabotage of epic proportions and the tragedy is that we have done it to ourselves. John Perry added: ‘I am one of those ‘woke fifth columnists’… We are disenfranchised exiled patriots. We love our country and want the best for it. We came to Spain as Euro Brits. ‘England is presently in the hands of the very worst third rate leadership, governed by Johnson, a pound shop Donald Trump. There is no place for me at the moment there. ‘I expect the union to break up and Brexit to utterly destroy the economy. Covid will simply intensify the disaster already inflicted on it by a half-witted, post-imperialist deluded electorate.’ My own view? Let the thousands of expats who voted to leave the EU return to sort out the current mess and the far bigger one looming on the horizon.
