THE provincial council has teamed up with a major travel firm to promote the Costa Almeria destination to both national and international tourists. The Diputacion de Almeria has signed an alliance with Viajes El Corte Ingles for a promotional campaign via conventional methods and through digital publicity aimed at highlighting the attractions of the Costa Almeria to travel agents and to the general public. Under the agreement the destination will have a presence in the company’s network of more than 600 travel agencies around Spain plus a further 108 outlets in some 15 countries, including France, Italy, Portugal, the US and a good number of South American nations. The strategy includes running Costa Almeria advertising on 10 digital advertis-

Viajes El Corte Ingles will also send out a newsletter to its client database, and a banner with a link to the Costa Almeria website will feature on the company’s main web page for a week. In addition the travel firm has committed to inserting a specific landing page for the province on its website for a fortnight and to run-
ning a banner on different sub-sections of the site. The deal with Viajes El Cortes Ingles is the latest agreement between the
Diputacion and a travel company under the administration’s ‘Programa Promo’ to reboot the provincial tourism sector fol-
lowing the hit from the Covid-19 pandemic. There are already agreements with online travel portals Logitravel, Destinia and Atrapalo, and with tour operator Avoris. “We are working on promotion at national, provincial and regional level, and with actions like this we are consolidating the positioning of our destination at international level,” commented Tourism deputy Fernando Giminez. He promised the initiative means “all the good things which our destination offers will reach millions of potential visitors.”

THE local authority is setting up an information point on the UK’s departure from the European Union in the Diversity Centre offices. “The council, within its municipal responsibilities, is providing information and consultations on the disconnection process for the British community resident in our municipality, as our priority is to apply all the necessary measures which result in the well-being of all residents in our town,” commented Vera mayor Jose Car melo Jorge Blanco. The council said a member of the municipal staff will be available from 10am to 2pm, Monday to Friday, to deal with queries and provide information on the possible consequences of the UK leaving the EU and to try and clear up any doubts. Public Holiday Reminder AUGUST 15 is a public holiday throughout Spain and is ‘Dia de la Asunción de la Virgen María.’ It is one of the biggest religious festivals across the country involving the Marian feast day. The holiday is based on the Christian belief that God raised the Virgin Mary to heaven reuniting her with her soul after her death. The holiday has been kept since the fourth century AD, as an attempt to replace an earlier pagan harvest festival. This is why it is still called the ‘Feast of Our Lady of the Harvest’ in certain regions of Europe. The Dia de la Asunción de la Virgen María celebrations begin in Spain on August 11 and culminate on August 15. The holiday usually coincides with several ferias throughout Spain, however due to Covid-19 health and safety regulations, all group gatherings have unfortunately been cancelled. Although the holiday falls on a Saturday this year it may lead to possible closures and reduced hours of supermarkets and businesses.
Lorry fire THE A7 motorway was blocked to traffic going in the direction of Almeria first thing on Sunday morning after a fire broke out on a lorry loaded with juice and milk at a point level with HuercalOvera. The Andalucia 112 emergencies services reported the incident meant traffic had to be temporarily diverted via the N-340A between kilometre markers 559 and 546 while Bomberos del Levante firefighters extinguished the blaze. There were no reports anyone was injured.

THE first phase of the Adra market makeover is complete and it is fully open for business. Mayor Manuel Cortes noted the market had undergone a “radical change” which “now you can clearly appreciate,” during a visit last Thursday to see the result of the works. He particularly highlighted how “functional” and how much more modern and light-filled the market is now, and urged locals to shop there and “support traditional trade because this is also the lifeblood of our town.” Commenting on what remains to be done on the €1.1 million market project

Immigrants surprise beach-goers A DINGHY with some 15 illegal immigrants on board raced onto the shore at Mojacar’s El Lance beach on Sunday evening, much to the astonishment of beach-goers chilling out in the cooling temperatures. As soon as the boat hit the sand just in front of Ankara the immigrants took off across the beach and ran up onto the road, abandoning the rubber dinghy where it was. Spanish press reported the Guardia Civil set about tracking them all down, but there were no updates on whether they had all been intercepted. Also on Sunday night Guardia Civil located two dinghies with 29 Algerian immigrants on board about 30 miles south of Almeria in the Alboran Sea.
EL EJIDO has recycled a record amount of cooking oil this year. The council reported that nearly 15,000 litres of domestic use oil have been deposited in the 87 dedicated recycling bins distributed around the municipality, the highest amount for the last four years. “In 2016 we managed to recycle 4,935 litres, however in recent years we have tripled that figure. floor of the main building have been redistributed in order to gain another three classrooms for infants and two exterior toilet modules for primary. The administration zone has also been redistributed, and pupil and teaching and non-teaching staff lavatories upgraded. Other actions include waterproofing the roof, works on the electricity and safety installations, repairing cracks and replacing tiles. The project is part financed by the EU’s European Regional Development Fund through the 2014-2020 Andalucia operation programme.
Adra on squatting ADRA Council is standing up for tougher action on squatting. The local authority has called on the Spanish government “to promote the necessary reforms to defend property.” More specifically the administration wants to see measures like giving municipal councils the authority to evict squat-
ters and harsher sanctions imposed on illegal occupations involving violence or where properties are used for sexual exploitation or drug trafficking. Adra also argues in favour of giving community of owner meetings the authority to press for evictions of properties in cases which affect other
residents in a community. At the same time the council has pledged to draw up its own municipal plan “to combat the seizure of properties and to preserve the right of private property.” The move got the backing of the members of the conservative Popular Party, the centrist Ciudadanos and the far-right

Fury over fish death

INCOMPREHENSION: The Equinac marine life association said it failed to understand why the harmless fish had not been left in peace. MARINE life rescue association Equinac reacted furiously to the death of a harmless moon fish on a Roquetas de Mar beach after a man dragged it out the sea and held it down. “Creatures live in the sea and they have every right to approach the beach without being attacked or harassed, without there being a collective hysteria, and even less that it has to die at the hands of people like this gentleman,” the organisation said. Equinac, the authorised association for dealing with marine life beachings in Almeria, explained that the moon fish, which is about the size of a medium-sized dolphin, had been spotted swimming off the Roquetas coast for three days, moving with currents with its fin above the water, as the species does. Over that time, members of the public mistaking it for a shark or dolphin alerted the authorities. Equinac made it clear the creature was harmless and should be left alone. However images posted on social media show a man holding the fish down on the sand.

ADRA is stepping up its commitment to looking after and protecting the environment. The council has applied to join the Spanish Network of Towns for the Climate, a move which got the backing of all the political parties represented on the municipal corporation at the last plenary meeting. The aim is to “continue moving forward in the fight against climate change and mitigating its effects on the planet,” the local authority said. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes said joining the network “demonstrates the council’s clear commitment and backing for promoting the care and respect for the environment as a strategic, central concept of municipal policies.” He also underlined what he said is a “growing awareness among the public on the issue.” Becoming part of the initiative is “an important step along the path we have already started on with the acti-

Car flips over A DRIVER was left trapped in his car after it flipped over onto its side on the coast road running between Almeria and Aguadulce on Friday. Almeria City Council reported that a firefighting team was called out to help at the scene of the accident at the level of the San Telmo castle on the road known locally as ‘El Cañarete.’
They played a key part in the rescue effort, managing to extract the driver via the door to the boot. He was lifted to a safe zone to be attended to by health personnel before being transferred to hospital. The firefighters also neutralised the fuel which had spilled onto the highway as a result of the accident to prevent it from igniting.

health crisis and protection is the job of everyone,” he stressed. The council also reported that in the light of recent outbreaks of the virus in nearby localities associated with nightlife, it is giving out an informative circular to all nightspots and hospitality trade businesses listing the compulsory rules on the urgent and extraordinary measures they have to adopt to prevent Covid-19 infections. The circular includes the corresponding fines if they don’t, which in the case of very serious violations go all the way up to €600,000. The local authority said the aim is to ensure all businesses receive the information.

The local authority’s Presidency department headed by Rocio Sanchez Llamas has organised signs in Spanish, English, German, French and Arabic reminding the public about the importance of social distancing and wearing face masks at all times. Larger format signs are going up on roads, while small versions are being distributed among local shops. “Roquetas Council continues working on information and raising awareness among citizens is an essential tool in the fight against Covid-19, which is a struggle in which each one of us has a key role, so that together we can defeat it,” the councillor affirmed. She explained the idea is to “give basic information in five languages so
nobody is left without knowing about these obligatory measures.” The location of the signs also takes into account the profile of the population in each zone and whether it is a touristy area. “The regulations have to be complied with by residents, but also by all visitors arriving in Roquetas over these months,” Sanchez Llamas stressed. She also pointed out the council has established a police presence dedicated to ensuring compliance with the Covid-19 prevention regulations, especially in areas where people are most likely to congregate, including shopping centres, seafront promenades and beaches. In addition, the administration has created signs specifically for the beaches, the weekly markets and the cemeteries, and has put up informative signs in all municipal buildings, among them the Santa Ana Castle and the bullfighting museum.

POLICE in Almeria have arrested a second Red Cross worker for their involvement in stealing and selling off two pallets worth of cartons of milk which had been donated to the charity. This brings the total number of detentions in relation to the matter to three. At the beginning of July the Red Cross headquarters in Almeria City received a donation of 16 pallets of milk worth nearly €10,000 in all from an Andalucia-based dairy company. A few days later the person in charge of the charity’s logistics informed police that some of the donation was being sold in a premises on the city’s Sector 20 industrial estate. Police checked to see if the claim was true and arrested the owner of the establishment where the milk was on sale and the individual who had contacted him and offered it to him at well below its market value. But the police investigation

In looking into how two pallets had disappeared from the logistics warehouse, without apparently leaving any fingerprints, officers discovered that a video and security monitoring system had been disconnected. The investigators concluded that the person in charge of the Red Cross warehouse had made it possible for one
of the individuals already under arrest to access the milk in exchange for money. The most recent detainee in connection with the case, 49-year-old FGR, now faces charges for the theft of the two pallets of milk, valued at more than €1,000. Police said the investigation remains open and they have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests.
A SUSPECTED thief cornered by Guardia Civil on a rooftop terrace in El Ejido threatened to jump if officers didn’t back off. The Guardia had been pursuing the suspect in relation to an attack on a woman while she was sitting in her car in the Las Norias neighbourhood. They spotted him going into a building, leading to a chase up the stairs to the roof. Cornered, the suspect stood on a ledge some 40 metres up from the ground and several times made as if to jump. The officers talked to him and tried to calm him down. Then
when he let down his guard and was out of danger, they managed to grab hold of him and arrest him for violent robbery. He is accused of wrestling with the victim in her vehicle, managing to get away with her handbag containing cash and other personal belongings, and leaving her with injuries which required hospital treatment. The Guardia Civil said a speedy investigation into the robbery had led to the identification of the suspected attacker, an individual with an extensive record for similar crimes.

Cashpoints for villages THE Almeria provincial council has launched an initiative to address ‘financial exclusion’ in inland villages with the installation of a cashpoint in Laroya. The Diputacion said this was the first of 33 multi-service cashpoints which will be installed in municipalities currently lacking any kind of banking or financial service, and which provide access to personal accounts and allow for dealing with any payment due to the administration. Brutal mugging
INVESTIGATION: The Guardia reported that the victims were initially hesitant to report the crime due to a fear of reprisals. GUARDIA CIVIL made nine arrests for a brutal mugging outside an Aguadulce nightspot. The detainees, aged between 15 and 24, face charges for violently robbing two young men in the early hours of the morning. The attackers whacked the pair repeatedly with the pole of a beach umbrella to steal their mobile phones, cash and other items of value. Fear of reprisals from the delinquents made the victims initially hesitant to report the crime. But a detailed investigation, witness interviews and information provided by the victims led to the identification of the suspects. The Guardia reported that the youngsters under arrest have records for similar incidents and that they have admitted to the Aguadulce attack.

He said the cashpoints represented “one of the most important commitments of this legislature… to take services to all corners of the province and bring financial services closer to all the villages.” He also affirmed that Almeria is the first province in Spain to install these kinds of multi-service automatic cashpoints, stressing they are 100 per cent financed by the Diputacion. The Laroya mayor said the cashpoints represented a service for the village’s inhabitants, but also for tourists. She pointed out that rural tourism is one of the main pillars of the local economy and said the cashpoint saves having to make a seven-kilometre trip to Macael. Over the coming months more cashpoints will be installed in the Almanzora, northern and Poniente regions of the province.

Overweight to heavyweight Jacob’s knock out journey JACOB SHARP weighed 165 kilos two years ago before shedding a staggering 70 kilos. A new-found passion for boxing and sheer determination has literally transformed his whole life. “I was fat from a kid, I grew up obese,” the 27-year-old, who lives on the Costa Blanca told Euro Weekly News. “I was so shy and wouldn’t have my picture taken. I ate, was lazy and never had any energy. I couldn’t do anything and everything was a chore.” Londoner Jacob, who has set up home in Benidorm, admits at his heaviest he had a 56-inch waist and at 6ft 3 inches, could only buy clothes for large men online. “I knew I had to do something. I tried going to the gym and dieting but nothing happened, I didn’t lose any weight.
“Then I started boxing in January 2018 and forgot about dieting. I just concentrated on the boxing and the weight literally fell off. I was training two hours a day for two years solid. “I found a love for boxing, it’s something I really enjoy and my weight dropped to 95 kilos.” Little did Jacob know that this would be a massive turning point in his life. As his body shape altered, so did his mindsight and life goals. With a natural flair for the sport, Jacob - who has deliberately bulked up to 110 kilos - set his sights on competing in the ring and already has two wins under his belt. The heavyweight added: “I’m now aiming for regionals. I’ve been offered to turn professional but if I do it now, I won’t be able to compete in the Olympics or anything.
“I would rather achieve something before I go professional. It’s very much a business, and I want to get more enjoyment out of it before going too serious.” In just two years, Jacob has already sparred with the top 10 heavyweight boxers, including Artur Szpiika, a Polish professional boxer who challenged once for the WBC heavyweight title against Deontay Wilder in 2016. A major turning point for Jacob came in September 2019 when he met Ilko Kirimov. “He was training for the Valencia championships and needed someone to spar with. He came to Vista Gym in La Nucia where I train to use me for sparring and beat me black and blue. “After that he won the championship and I said to myself ‘I’m going to beat this guy.’ I trained hard and put my name down for a fight in Benidorm and he did

too, thinking he could beat me. But he didn’t, I beat him. “After that I knew I could do anything. “I want to win the Community of Valencia, then the regionals and see what’s next, it could be the whole of Spain. Eye on Almeria beach-goers A STEPPED up Local Police presence is keeping an eye on Almeria beachgoers to ensure full compliance with safety measures to prevent any possible risk of Covid-19 infections. As well as controlling maximum numbers on beaches, officers are also checking that everyone is wearing a face mask and social distancing, and issuing fines of at least €100 for non-compliance. Over the second fortnight of July and the first week of August officers filed more than 120 reports against individuals for not following health authorities’ coronavirus prevention rules, Almeria Safety and Mobility councillor Maria del Mar Garcia Lorca reported. The councillor explained police are particularly focusing on the areas which tend to get the busiest and that they have the authority to close access to beaches to prevent the number of people exceeding what is considered safe. She also explained that officers on the lookout for possible so-called ‘botellones’: get-togethers in public places to drink and party. She made the point that the sanctions are intended to encourage responsible behaviour on the part of the public and prevent further coronavirus contagions. into action, three pairs of Local Police officers have been patrolling Almeria’s urban beach area, two officers on the beaches of Costacabana and Retamar and another two at Cabo de Gata and La Fabriquilla. They coordinate the monitoring tasks with the beach assistants contracted by the Junta de Andalucia. The assistants use megaphones to remind the public of the rules featured on noticeboards at beach entrances. The Safety and Mobility councillor repeated that the minimum distance between groups of beach-goers is four metres.

The local authority stated that Maui Beach should not open for a period of 24 months due to a ‘serious violation’ of the law on Public Spaces and Leisure Activities in Andalucia, affirming it had been operating as a music bar without the correct kind of licences.

Park investment THE Andalucia regional government has promised a major investment in Almeria’s Cabo de Gata natural park. Commenting during a recent visit to the park’s Las Amoladeras information centre, the Junta’s Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable Development regional minster Carmen Crespo said the administration is putting more than €1 million into the conservation and improvement of the park. She said this would go on projects for the conservation of the coastline, protecting and highlighting the geological heritage and on improving facilities and infrastructure. Crespo explained the investment comes under the Andalucia government’s €25.2 million plan for strengthening and modernising the use of the region’s natural spaces with the aim of “promoting the sustainable exploitation of these zones and also business undertakings linked to the environment.” The regional minister expressed the conviction that this would promote and improve rural development through ecotourism, generating green employment and creating wealth in a

way which is fully compatible with the conservation of natural spaces. The Cabo de Gata project includes a La Casa de los Volcanes eco-museum, viewing points, walking trails and signposting. Business support on doorstep THE Almeria Chamber of Commerce will have a delegation based in Huercal-Overa from September onwards. The move was formalised at the end of July with the signing of an agreement between the provincial business institution president Jeronimo Parra and Huercal-Overa mayor Domingo Fernandez. The mayor said providing Huercal-Overa’s business community with close access to Chamber of Commerce services on their doorstep was part of the council’s ongoing support for business people and entrepreneurs “at these difficult times.” It also complements the local authority measures for “supporting and stimulating economic recovery and the creation of employment in the municipalit,” Dominguez affirmed. Jeronimo Parra said the initiative would enable the chamber to provide a swifter response to Huercal-Overa businesses’ needs, underlining the operational advantages of the decentralisation. “It avoids a lot of trips and kilometres by businesses,” he commented. The council maintained the collaboration will be a benefit to business ventures, training and youth employment, but also represents support for the more than 2,000 municipal companies on the Chamber of Commerce census in terms of trade, internationalisation, innovation and digitalisation. The local authority is supporting the chamber’s services with an annual financial contribution, with a commitment for a period of four years, and will propose, action and support joint projects with the business institution.

Nevertheless, it seems that politicians are using Covid19 as a carte blanche to do what they think best; without any questioning from the general public, just a few voices from some doctors, biologists, sociologists and phycologists who are totally against the measures which are being taken. However, they say that our society is the most informed in history, but in reality, it is probably the most deceived. Nowadays, we believe we are infor med, with knowledge and with the freedom that allows us to make our

These major media groups as stated above belong to some of the world’s major corporations using their foundations to circulate budgets superior to many countries’ gross domestic product. In 1888 President Rutherford B Hayes noted in his diary that the United States ceased being a government for the people and had been replaced by a ‘government of the corporation, by the corporation, and for the corporation.’ It’s up to the people to question and critically think about the information being given and at the same time to pressure our politicians to get out of their comfort zone and take action.

Markets suspended A SURGE in new Covid19 cases on the Costa Almeria prompted a number of localities to suspend their street markets to avoid gatherings of people and a possible risk of infections. Garrucha Council announced on Thursday August 6 that after studying the pandemic situation over the previous 24 hours it had decided to stop both its weekly Friday market and the daily summer season market on its seafront promenade until there is a drop in the number of cases. The local authority also put a temporary halt to sporting activities and to organised activities for youngsters at its House of Youth. At the same time the council said it was beefing up disinfection efforts in the municipality and had asked the Junta de Andalucia to reduce

tion develops. “The council considers the protection of health is vital and comes before any individual or collective right,” the notification states. There is also an appeal to the public to “maximise protection and prevention measures and to follow the protocols to the letter. “Between us all we can contain the expansion of the infections,” the notification ends.

Still denying its existence
MILLIONS still dying, hospitals and governments unable to cope, countries that have allowed tourism to resume becoming once again rampant with it - and still numbskulls are denying the existence of this devastating Covid virus. Why do human beings choose to turn a blind eye to events and situations that are blatantly staring them in the face? Do these ostriches not understand that by ignoring the existence of a problem, they will never stand a chance of solving it? Like their overblown feathered counterparts, do they think that when they withdraw their heads all the troubles will have miraculously gone away? Well I have news, they won’t. To my mind, unless something drastic or miraculous occurs, I think this evil malady will be with us for well into next year and possibly beyond. It makes my blood boil to see so many totally ignoring the directives of the health leaders and authorities. I also feel that by advising the over 50’s to stay at home is aiming at the wrong end of the age groups. These are the citizens who have in the main been conforming to the government’s directives and now are being penalised for it. It’s the self-centered youngsters that should be firmly locked

down. But that won’t happen will it? The privileged and uncaring members of present day generations simply won’t comply. We are now experiencing the direct result of the namby pamby’ing leftie luvvies who, over the past 30 years or so, have somehow eased themselves into positions of control and frankly got it all wrong. It has resulted in millions of our youngsters firmly
believing that the world owes them a living and utterly destroyed all their respect for others, particularly their elders. The social media has allowed them to air and spread doctrines based on little, or no knowledge of history or tradition whatsoever, and subsequently instilled in them values so out of touch with reality that they consider the colouring of their pubic hair a deci-
sion of major importance. Sometimes I really am thankful to have reached the age of 81. At least with my future longevity growing shorter and more precarious by the day, I won’t have to experience the total chaos our planet will find itself in when serious decisions need to be made by this bunch of, oh so often ‘offended’ and utterly naïve bunch of selfish wasters. I just hope and pray, that those among them who have received a decent upbringing and retain a true empathy and respect for their fellow human beings, can lift their peers out of the mire they have sunk into. Unfortunately, as these are in a sad minority, I fear most of their efforts will be lost in such a morass of entitled under-achievers and violent criminals that most of their efforts will be completely in vain. During such scorchers, in the western province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, we head north for relief. Even the tiny islands have high northern rockfaces, forming moisture clouds from the prevailing Trade Winds. At 35º in the south and away we go, over mountains through cool forests to cloudy zones on north coasts. Eastern province Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, apart from Gran Canaria itself which has higher elevations, is different. Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Graciosa are flatter. The LGTBIQ+ Love Festival took place, albeit in ammended form. Covid free La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa are nearly full, the other islands not far behind. Mainland Spanish are here in force, happily spending money. “It’s amazing here! We holiday abroad, so we’d never have come,” said Luis Torres from Madrid. I asked if they’d be back. “Of course. Now we know!” Will appreciation of what’s close increase, I wonder? Good news indeed.

ANTI-MASKERS ARE THE NEW ANTI-VAXXERS: WHAT ABOUT YOU?
ALL over Europe and beyond we’re seeing Covid-19 restrictions lifted, then replaced as infections spike. However, when this is all over, I’d be very interested to see an in-depth survey and analysis of those people who 1) won’t do as they are advised/ requested/required; 2) take it as a personal affront and infringement of their civil liberties to be asked to wear a mask for a very short time; 3) regard it as absolutely essential to go to a pub/ beach/hotel abroad without further delay; 4) have no concept whatsoever of community responsibility. Whenever lockdown is eased a very short period out of a healthy person’s lifetime - why are so many anti-maskers prepared to break the law and gamble with their own and other people’s safety for basically trivial reasons? And presumably there is a
cross-over with the conspiracy theorists/influencers who think the metal strip in a mask is a conductor for 5G and anti-vaxxers - a quarter of Brits - say they might refuse a coronavirus vaccine. Does this matter, you ask? You bet, because their selfishness and stupidity put others at risk, particularly those who can’t have vaccinations for medical reasons. Punishment (denial of NHS services or schooling, for instance) for non-vaccination is a nonstarter, it’d be hard to enforce without added bureaucracy and likely costly court cases. So why not try, as a one-off against this virus (deadly to both health and the economy), the ‘carrot’ instead? Offer, say, some hard cash for each person vaccinated. It would cost a few hundred million pounds, but would likely soon pay for itself. Money talks, possibly louder than influencers, igno-
rance or superstition. Alternatively, if a vaccine becomes widely available, surely all countries will require a certificate of vaccination for entry, as used to be the case for smallpox in many countries before it was eliminated due to a worldwide vaccination programme. Once these anti-vaxxers find they’re unable to travel anywhere other than in their own country, I suspect the problem could disappear... So, where do you stand? OUR VIEW Your choice WE’RE all going on a summer holiday!.. No? Maybe not yet? I do think we all deserve a holiday after the year we have had so far. But is that a possibility? There seems to be many strong opinions on this terrible virus and whether it is getting worse, better or just something we should try to live with. Should travelling be a priority? Can people be trusted to go to a different country and abide by the rules and regulations? We should remember that a holiday is a luxury and also that cheap beer and sunshine aren’t the answers to all our prayers. However, some of us need to break from the old routine, to literally distance ourselves from our everyday life. When will we be able to do that? Nobody has an answer. This uncertainty seems to be perpetuating fear, and constant news updates on figures really stick the boot in. Whilst we are getting riled up and upset about not getting to burn in the sand for a week there are other people who have been parted from their families, missed funerals, lost their jobs and lost their lives. Deep down do we really feel that we deserve a break more than them? The governments have our choices in the palm of their hand. There are some who think that they are crushing us and others who think they are saving us. The majority may feel that we should put our trust in them and let them take control, it would certainly free us of some worries. Others believe it is a well-planned conspiracy to control the world, are they getting a bit carried away? Before you think of flying off into the sun please think, are you ready for any eventuality? Is it really worth it? If so, go right ahead.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, On Friday, July 24, my wife and I had come out of Mercadona and into the outside parking area near the entrance. When she suddenly collapsed and her head hit the floor. A young Spanish couple in a car stopped and jumped out and called an ambulance as she was unable to move. They stayed with us and used a hand fan to keep Stella (my wife) cool in the fierce heat. I would like to say a mighty big thanks to this couple for the quick reaction and help they gave us and it just shows that there are people in this world that care and have feelings for others. Never got their names but they know who they are and I just hope that they manage to read your paper or somebody who knows them passes on this message. THANK YOU AGAIN.

THIS has definitely been a year to remember. With everything that has happened, it’s fair to say, a divide has been caused. Many people have different beliefs and opinions of the worldwide decisions that have been made. Families and friends have fallen out, arguments have become the norm on social media, anger and fear has spread like the summer wildfires. But what about the hashtag #BeKind? Has this become tomorrow’s chip paper? Is it now a thing of the past? A Shock To The Nation On February 15, 2020, the beautifully talented Caroline Flack took her own life. Whilst I didn’t know her personally, it had a huge impact on me. She lit up our TV screens with her big smile, dirty laugh and ‘girl next door’ attitude. She was warm, relatable

with a kind and genuine soul. The pressure of the national tabloids and trolling emails became too much for her. She didn’t want to continue with her life, she felt there was no way out. On average in both Spain and the UK, there are over 9,000 deaths per year from suicide, with concerns of a rise in 2020. Due to the world’s news, mental health issues have been on an all-time high. It is now believed, as of May 6, 2020, over 6.8 million adults have been diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder (GAD). With these statistics in mind, should we think twice before publicly airing our opinions with what we believe to be or not believe to be true?
REMEMBER: You only get one shot at life, so make it count!
My answer is both yes and no! Of course, we can all have our own beliefs, our own opinions. If we were all the same, the world would be extremely dull. However, I truly believe there is a way of
doing so. We should express our feelings, beliefs and opinions with nothing but KINDNESS! We should respect that not everyone will think and feel the same. We should understand that oth-
ers may be more fearful of the current situation and are simply not ready to look into other motives. The same as we should respect those who have researched more and taken the time to look out for others. So, before you fall out with a friend over a difference of opinion, before you remove a family member from your life, read this quote and remember, you only get one shot at life, so make it count! Don’t let anyone make you cruel! No matter how badly you want to give the world a taste of its own bitter medicine, it’s never worth losing yourself. #BeKind was a global hashtag. It’s now time to turn that hashtag into action.

Dreaded ‘maskne’ AS protective face masks have become an essential part of everyone’s life thanks to Covid, many have discovered that regularly wearing one can have uncomfortable sideeffects, mainly the dreaded ‘maskne’. But what exactly causes maskne? According to dermatologists, the “constant rubbing of the masks against our skin causes micro-tears, allowing easier entry for bacteria and dirt to clog up our pores.” Also, there is the damp, hot environment underneath your mask. Breathing into a mask creates a warm, moist environment that leads to the build-up of oil, sweat and bacteria. Add the fact that face masks are designed to block things and it’s a recipe for skin disaster. One way to combat it is to avoid thick skincare creams and swap them for more lightweight water-

Skincare companies have seen a strong rise in deep-cleansing products in
the past few months. This rise may be attributed to mask-related issues, including oilier skin and acne, as well as an increase in hygiene habits due to Covid-19. However, while skincare is booming, the make-up industry has taken a bashing as more people are working from home and avoid going out. Luckily, the demand for make-up is expected to rise again as life returns to normal, businesses begin to reopen their doors, and more people return to the workplace.

Back pain has now become one of the most common health complaints, and on many occasions is due to bad habits. Hours sitting at a computer or standing at work or walking without maintaining an upright posture can create tension in the back and shoulders that causes uncomfortable pain. Here are some exercises that can be practised daily: Wall slides A simple exercise to strengthen the waist and correct the posture of the entire spine. It consists of supporting the back straight against the wall and sliding slowly, pressing the back on the wall, until your knees are flexed. Hold for 10 seconds. Do five-10 reps a day. Torso tilts This practice is used in yoga as a stretching exercise. Standing with your back straight and your feet together, raise your arms until the palms of your hands come together

Banish back pain above your head. Then tilt your torso from left to right, holding for five seconds on each side, to stretch and twist the spine. Rotating shoulders This exercise will alleviate accumulated tension in the
shoulders and cervical muscles to correct posture. Inhale by raising your shoulders towards the ears without separating your hands from your body. Hold for five seconds before exhaling. Do five-10 reps a day.

Guadalupe - the Royal Monastery at the heart of Spanish history SET in the heart of the region of Extremadura about an hour’s drive from the historic Renaissance town of Caceres, the pretty village of Guadalupe is a remarkable destination in its own right. While its cobbled streets are lined with striking buildings that show the evidence of many centuries of history, the reason people come from far and wide is to see the magnificent building right at its centre - the Sanctuary-Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Founded by King Alfonso XI of Castille in the 14th century, it is a truly exceptional edifice that has been added to and lavishly embellished down the years. In fact it is regarded so highly that it has been named as a UN World Heritage Site. It became Spain’s Royal Monastery, where the great and good gathered amidst some of the most magnificent religious art and exquisite gold, and silverware. This was not simply a religious house, for it was at the heart of power. It was here that the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, granted Christopher Columbus an audience that would eventually lead to the discovery of the Americas. Exceptional blend Architecturally, it is an exceptional blend
of differing styles. The 14th-15th century Mudejar church and cloister is particularly fine, with its intricate façade setting a striking tone. The interior nave and two side aisles are notable for their fine vaulting and feature richly ornamented altars and tombs. The sacristy is renowned for a series of paintings by Zurbarán and magnificent wall paintings that seem to leap out from the plain canvas of the architecture itself. It was built between 1638 and 1647 and provides a contrast to the earlier periods. Moving through the sacristy the Chapel of Santa Catalina of Alejandria is home to some imposing tombs that date to the 17th century. It is also packed with reliquaries and exquisite works of art. Entering into the Camarin de la Vigen you will find an octagonal room decorated in baroque style. Head up the stairs and the star of the show awaits - Guadalupe’s famous black Madonna. Here a monk takes over from the usual guide to present the statue to and bless visitors. The statuette is richly clothed and in her arms holds a baby Jesus - also black. It is the most emblematic symbol of the monastery - and for many Catholics the most holy part of the visit.

Lost in a Masquerade GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN the ‘new normal’, we’re becoming quite divided. While we show something of a united front, w e s t a n d s t ro n g a g a i n s t t h e dreaded virus, or more likely, the dreaded aftermath. We clapped for frontline workers, continue to sanitise our hands, until the skin is almost non-existent, and of course we try to remain as socially distant as possible, even in i m p o s s i b l e s i t u a t i o n s . H o w e v e r, there’s a major division between those who believe in Covid-19 and those who call it the Scamdemic. On Monday, I was in Marbella and found a fantastic little bar, selling Lavazza coffee. This may seem mundane, but as someone who’s lived in Italy for many years, and also one who drinks way too much coffee, this find is like winning the lottery. Spain is fantastic for many things, sadly, coffee isn’t one. I love strong coffee, but the flavour of café solo is way too bitter. When I ask for frothed milk, I receive warm milk. I start my day with one cappuccino, followed by uncountable espressi. I’m pretty wired most of the time, but why change the habit of a lifetime? Anyhow, I bought a take out espresso and found a spot where I could stand, socially distant, remove my mask, and down my fix. It’s a long time since I’ve been ‘papped’, as they say, so when a guy with a camera arrived and took my photo, I was shocked. At first I assumed he was photographing the buildings. But no, he continued snapping and told me it’s illegal to remove my mask. I laughed, and explained I was trying to drink my coffee. “I’ll make a police report!” he steamed, ironically wearing a filthy mask, with his nose uncovered. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve been wearing a mask since March, will continue to. But at what point does removing it becoming such an issue for someone else? My friend felt it would be funny to

Clearly the guy had bigger issues to address. Later, I was standing in-line at the ATM, when the lady next to me asked why I was wearing a mask. “It’s a fake virus?” she informed. I didn’t respond, but that didn’t stop her. She went on, “I must regi s t e r w i t h t h e c h a t f o r u m , Tr u t h , and learn the reality. The leaders are taking over, soon we’ll be microchipped”. I prayed the guy in front of me would hurry, so I could escape. In one day, I learned a lot: there are the believers and the suspicious. Those wearing masks, not because we’re forced to, but because we care for others. Then there are those who feel it’s time to become a law enforcer. Let me put it on record; the next person to stick a camera in my face without asking can expect to have it smashed. Unless of course, it’s Patrick Demarchelier.

Amongst the plethora of unpleasant symptoms trumpeting the advent of this little understood period of a woman’s life, two stand out as being the real bitches of many a dog day afternoon spent grappling with hot flushes, towering rage and crumpled weeping; they are the phantoms of forgetfulness (or the many pauses of the menopause) and fat, fat that suddenly appears where fat has no right appearing, increasing the size of girth and ass and decreasing ones visibility. Fat spreads around the middle and no amount of exercise will shift the little b****. Welcome muffin top goodbye two piece bikini and cute little purple sequined crop top (a shopping faux pas best forgotten about). The two Fs creep in like uninvited guests around the 45 age mark and set

up home above the garage. If you thought the forgetfulness of pregnancy was bad welcome to the many pauses of menopause dear lady readers. Not only does one march purposefully into a room on a mission soon forgotten but one ceases to recognise the whole room and is left frozen like an errant laptop during an illegal streaming of True Detective (another symptom is the desire to watch Matthew Mcconaughey on a loop but not Magic Mike due to the hot flushes... far too dangerous). I once even forgot my son’s name ... although that is nothing compared to the utter confusion caused during my misspent youth by a man I swear I had never met, greeting me warmly and proceeding to recount episodes of our relationship. It turned out that I had spent the whole weekend with him on a shared pub crawl... luckily we did not marry or buy a house together. Of course nowadays the muffin top and the red face and grumpy persona protects me from such japes, that and my
middle aged lady cloak of invisibility (which I imagine to be crocheted in a patchwork of luminous colours). No longer being deemed worthy of unwelcome flirtations is at first mildly irritating and then entirely refreshing. I now eat and drink less and exercise more yet my middle age spread keeps on spreading. I lose words halfway through a sentence and never remember a name once given and don’t get me started on instructions and directions. I may look as if I am listening but in reality I am pondering the evolution of mouths and the delightful little freckle on the nose of the person speaking. I may blame the menopause but in actual fact I have never been very good at instructions, I am more of a kinesthetic learner and would rather ‘do’ than listen as I have a mind full of extraneous information which takes far too long to sift through, a bit like my documents draw. As to the battle of the muffin top… hoist the white flag. Cava and Cake anyone? Toodle pip!
POINTS-SCORING AND NAME-DROPPING DAVID WORBOYS “THANK God I am not like other people!” I doubt if even arch-egoist Donald Trump has said this aloud in so many words - at least in public. But I have heard this sentiment of superiority expressed so many times in varying degrees of subtlety. This is the essence of egoism - self-adulation at the expense of others. In this way, friends, acquaintances and strangers alike all become adversaries. In my book ‘The English Middle-Class Code,’ I suggested there are several ways of projecting self-image. And they involve both boasting and putting other people down. The most obvious ploys are name-dropping, points-scoring, criticising and, finally, posing. Name-droppers often cite

This suggests they fit in with a ‘superior’ group. ‘Lord Balderdash was a close friend of my uncle.’ ‘It was when we attended the Queen’s garden party.’ ‘I met Muhammad Ali at the Plaza Hotel in New York.’ ‘Cassandra was at school with General Mockingbird’s daughter.’ At the slightest opportunity, the name-dropper will jump in to impress the adversary with the joys of travel and experiences by references to places.
‘We love going to Glyndebourne’. ‘Oh, yes; that would be when Reggie and I were in Cairo - there are some wonderful museums there!’ ‘I don’t suppose you’ve been to Vienna yet?’ Points-scoring means gaining points by flaunting. ‘We like the first-class lounge at Heathrow.’ ‘It’s time for our BMW’s MOT; have you ever driven a BMW?’ ‘I’m really pleased with my new camera; I must show it to you.’ It is most effective when, at the same time, the adver-
sary loses points by being put down. ‘Those curtains are so 1970!’ ‘Didn’t he get into Oxford?’ Autobiographies can portray interesting events, opinions and impressions during the author’s lifetime. Unfortunately, many of them focus on promoting the writer’s self-image by dwelling on his successes or her achievements. Too frequently, those who write mainly about themselves are not really interested in anything or anybody else. They
therefore have little of substance to say. And so they emphasise their good fortune their wealth, their knowledge, their experiences and their ‘connections’ in the hope of invoking envy. But, apart from friends and family, who wants to know? The need to be right means criticising, which means somebody else must be wrong - or better still, made to feel inadequate. The adversary therefore has to be contradicted, interrupted or ignored, whether right or wrong. This signifies a complete intolerance of the ideas, tastes and opinions of others. In the view of the egoist the other person is ignorant, illiterate, naive, lazy. Posers are a special category. While they prefer the visible to the vocal approach, they risk being ridiculed aloud in public by anybody humorously ‘challenging’ their pretentiousness. They merit a separate discussion.

BARRY DUKE I ANTICIPATED a robust reaction to a question I posed on Facebook last week, but I hadn’t bargained for the outpouring of derision and fury it provoked. This is what I posted on the Brexpats in Spain page: ‘How many of you are prepared to return to the UK to help it out in its hour of need? ‘I ask because I received a message on FB that got me thinking about writing a column for Euro Weekly News. The message reads, in part, “it is time for expats to return home and rally to the mother country at its time of need. We have an economy to rebuild and we face huge challenges from the virus, from the shortterm impact of Brexit, and the ‘woke’ fifth columnists undermining us from within”.’ It damn near caused a riot. Within 30 minutes 115 people had left comments, many of
which cannot be repeated in a f a m i l y newspaper. The page’s administrator was forced to close down the thread when it looked like it was g e t -
ting completely out of hand. Many excellent points were made, but to my mind the best was posted by Iain Henderson who pounced on the term ‘fifth columnists,’ meaning the enemy within.

He pointed out that the UK ‘isn't at war with the EU ... We are not dealing with spies, saboteurs, or irregular forces. This is a story of a small island
nation which has taken its ball and bat home. It’s now having a childish tantrum as it’s facing a long period out in the cold with no agreement with its biggest trading power.
‘And no. I won’t be going home to help Blighty in its hour of need. This is an act of sabotage of epic proportions and the tragedy is that we have done it to ourselves. John Perry added: ‘I am one of those ‘woke fifth columnists’… We are disenfranchised exiled patriots. We love our country and want the best for it. We came to Spain as Euro Brits. ‘England is presently in the hands of the very worst third rate leadership, governed by Johnson, a pound shop Donald Trump. There is no place for me at the moment there. ‘I expect the union to break up and Brexit to utterly destroy the economy. Covid will simply intensify the disaster already inflicted on it by a half-witted, post-imperialist deluded electorate.’ My own view? Let the thousands of expats who voted to leave the EU return to sort out the current mess and the far bigger one looming on the horizon.

A proper spare tyre at a reasonable €133 (£120) would be top of my tick list of extras, thereby banishing the standard tyre sealant kit forever.

The German team kept themselves in the game with Kai Havertz playing a one-two with Kevin Volland, firing the ball past goalkeeper Samir Handanovic to minimise the gap to a single goal.
