THE Mallorca government is talking up the island as a safe holiday destination pick in a new promotional campaign aimed at the Spanish tourist market. It is the island administration’s first comarketing campaign, and is being run by the Mallorca Tourism Foundation together with the travel division of Barcelo Avoris, B The Travel Brand. Speaking to press at the campaign launch on Monday, Consell de Mallorca President Catalina Cladera explained it had been designed so that travel agencies and tour operators “can publicise Mallorca as a safe, sustainable and quality destination.” A further aim remains to make tourism on the island less seasonal, Cladera added. The Mallorca president also defended

She explained that the campaigns will mainly be online, “but also through more traditional mediums.” Cladera thanked B The Travel Band for
its “effort and courage” at “such a complicated time,” and underlined the need to “sell the Mallorca destination to tourism in all the world, but in this case specifically to national tourism, which is a good, safe customer.” Barcelo Avoris travel division CEO Vicente Fenollar stressed that Mallorca is a “strategic destination” for the company, not least because the business has its origins on the island. “We are confident it will be a very productive campaign,” he commented, pointing out that 700 offices throughout Spain will be getting to work on the promotion. He also made the point that Spanish holidaymakers tend to be somewhat “last minute” in their holiday plans, making now a good time to get the campaign off the ground.
GO, SPAIN! a celebratory dinner at the GPRO Valparaiso attended by many of the more than 50 Go, Spain! ambassadors. Among them will be actress, journalist and TV presenter Cayetano Guillen-Cuervo, who is the documentary narrator, model and TV presenter Nieves Alvarez, and top chef Paco Roncero. One of the main objectives of the production company behind the project, Think, is the promotion of Spain as a cultural and tourism reference point at world level. The documentary is therefore aimed primarily at an international audience and will be distributed in countries including India, China, the US, Brazil, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, as well as in Spain and the rest of Europe.
It is due to premiere in November on the platform Filmin.
All the profits from the production will go to the Food Bank.

FILMING for a documentary showcasing Spain’s economic recovery and reconstruction from the Covid-19 crisis through culture, art, cuisine, sport, music and entertainment has moved to Mallorca this week. The final scenes for ‘Go, Spain’ are being shot at various places on the island. They include the GPRO Valparaiso hotel in Palma, the Axartell bodega in Pollensa, Ses Salines and Cap Blanc. The hotel’s manager Toni Ferrer is among the Mallorcans taking part in the project. Also the Oliu Restaurant owner and chef Joan Porcel, the Mallorca Exhibitions and Culture curator Neus Cortes, film producer Juan Carlos Caro and designer Sebastian Pons. The focus is on quality, which goes beyond sun and sand thanks to the island’s offer of gastronomy, sustainability, culture and sporting activities. The production will wrap up this Friday with

EVIDENCE: Archaeologists found bones, a bullet and personal objects dating back to the 1930s. A TEAM of archaeologists working on exhumations at the Son Coletes cemetery in Manacor has discovered what they believe are the bones of victims of Spain’s Civil War. The found a bullet which had been fired at one and personal objects dating back to the 1930s. The remains were located 12 days into the exhumations in a part of the cemetery be-
lieved to have been used for burying victims or reprisals. It was also reported the remains could have been stored in bags during construction works on the new cemetery in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The bullet is seen as the most compelling evidence of the likely origin of the bones: it is of a kind which was commonly used by Falangist squads.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: The subsidies are aimed at modernising the craft sector and making it more competitive. THE Mallorca government is backing island produced crafts and artisan products as part of a strategy aimed at creating a more diverse economy. The Consell de Mallorca’s Craftwork Management department has revealed it has allocated nearly €350,000 this year in subsidies to the 180 projects and 106 professionals working in the sector. The financial assistance is for covering costs like training, whether attending or organising classes, organising events, taking part in fairs and markets and promotions of artisans’ trades. The help is also aimed at improving and modernising the craft sector through subsidising the reform and adaptation of workshops, the acquisition of new machinery or IT equipment and the development of websites. “With these subsidies we are provid-
ing support to our artisans and therefore a boost to the Mallorca product, which has been a core idea of our policies from the first moment,” said Economic Promotion and Local Development councillor Jaume Alzamora. Commenting during a visit to Soller on Monday along with the Craftwork Management director Marta Joran to two of the artisans who are benefiting from the subsidies, Alzamora added, “now more than ever we want the sector to modernise and be more competitive, because the productive fabric of Mallorca is a basic actor for the diversification of our economy.” The subsidies were announced in May as part of the island administration’s ‘Mallorca Reacciona’ plan for social and economic activation aimed at dealing with the severe impact of the Covid19 health crisis.

A RUNAWAY bull proved to be quite a challenge for Inca police. The beast escaped from the municipal slaughterhouse on Sunday and took off down the road, charging at people and cars it came across along its way. “When the week ends and you think nothing else can happen you get a warning about a bull grazing on an industrial estate,” Inca’s Local Police posted on social media. Given the potential risk the animal represented to both pedestrians and vehicles the force mobilised all service patrols. They found it near the cemetery, but catching it was no easy matter. The bull was frightened and kept rushing at the officers and their cars. They got it surrounded,

Progress wrecked THE UK Government’s recent moves on Spain have wrecked all the progress which was being made by the Balearic Island tourism sector, according to Mallorca hoteliers. “All the advances in terms of tourism in the Balearics have been ruined by the UK’s decision to advise against travel to Spain, including the Balearics and the Canary Islands, and to impose a quarantine on all the British returning from Spain,” the FEHM Mallorca Hoteliers Federation president Maria Frontera told Spanish press. Frontera said she had been surprised that the UK changed its mind and included the two archipelagos in the essential travel recommendation only on Spain having initially excluded them. She also expressed the hope that diplomatic negotiations on the issue would have a positive outcome, but added that it was unlikely to be soon. In the meantime the ‘disastrous’ ef-

Royal break a bit different THE Spanish Royal Family’s annual break in Mallorca is set to be a bit different this year, Spanish press reports. The King and Queen and their daughters Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia are scheduled to arrive at the royals’ Marivent Palace summer residence on the island on Friday August
7 and stay for around 10 days. But rather than spend the whole time in Mallorca as usual, they will also visit Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera. The trips to the other three Balearic Islands follow on from King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s visits to various parts of Spain in recent weeks to support
business sectors trying to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and to promote tourism. The King’s mother Queen Sofia is already staying at the Marivent along with his sister Infanta Elena. Queen Sofia is due to spend August on the island.

Registration numbers drop COVID-19 is one of the main factors behind a drop in school registrations in the Balearic Islands, according to the regional Education minister. The archipelago’s Education ministry reported there are 756 less requests for places for the upcoming 2020/21 school year than there were for the last. The islands’ Education minister Marti March put the decrease down to the economic crisis created by the pandemic, as well as to a drop in the Balearics’ birthrate in recent years. The motion aimed at trying to bring about a reverse of the Balearic administration’s decision to shut down leisure outlets on the three streets and set out a plan for police action in the most
troublesome areas of the municipality did however have the support of members of the centrist Ciudadanos and the farright Vox party. PP spokeswoman Luisa Jimenez had argued that the kind of fights and rowdy behaviour seen on Punta Ballena and on other streets earlier in July, images of which were posted all over social media, were the responsibility of the security forces and not the businesses. She described the shutdown introduced on July 15 as “hasty, discriminatory and not very effective,” and maintained it had simply pushed this kind of behaviour by tourists to other areas of the locality. But Deputy Mayor Natividad Frances stuck by the measure. She agreed it had been a “tough” move and that there was “collateral damage,” but insisted “we are talking about public health.”

THE good news is the number of people out of work in the Balearic Islands dipped slightly in J u l y, b u t t h e b a d news is the archipelago’s jobless figure is over 90 per cent higher than at the same time last year. A total of 71,547 people on the islands were registered as unemployed with the SEPE State Employment Public Service by the end of last month, Employment and Social Security Ministry figures released on Tuesday reveal. This compares with 34,042 in July 2019. There were however 2,746 less people without a job than in June, representing a 3.7 per cent decrease.

AFTER a series of scandalous leaks about ex-King Juan Carlos’ corruption, the former head of the Royal family has decided to exile himself and leave Spain. This decision has been taken to help his son, the current reigning monarch, King Felipe VI rule without scandal. A series of alleged corrupt and immoral actions have come to light over the past few months, bringing with it reputational damage to the monarchy in Spain. The former king expressed his decision to move in a statement which was issued on Monday.
In the letter, he conveys that “his desire to be of service to Spain” is exactly what “inspired” his “reign” and that “in the face of public repercussion that is generated due to past events of” his “private life,” he has taken the “thoughtful decision to move, at this time, outside of Spain.” This decision has not been taken lightly “but with great serenity” and the former King who reigned upon Spain for “almost 40 years” contends that he has “always wanted the best for Spain and the Crown.”

MALLORCA has been remembering the final victims of Basque separatists ETA in Spain. Calvia Council staged an act paying tribute to Guardia Civil officers Diego Salva and Carlos Saenz de Tejada on Thursday July 30, the 11th anniversary of the assassination of the 27 and 28-year-old in Palma Nova. The homage was held in the exact spot where the young officers’ vehicle was blown up by an explosive device planted by ETA and was attended by family members of the victims, representatives of the Guardia Civil, and dignitaries including the Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Aina Calvo. It was Calvia mayor Alfonso Rodriguez who said a few words at the ceremony. “Eleven years ago terrorism brutality snatched away the lives of Diego and Carlos,” the mayor said. He expressed his “peace of mind and satisfaction in knowing that democracy defeated terror, that it

PALMA City Council has launched a campaign calling on the public to be careful with how they throw away used face masks and gloves. The authority has produced a video in which it appeals to people to behave responsibly and not simply toss masks and gloves on the ground be-
cause of the health risk, but also because of the harm to the environment. The video depicts typical scenarios like someone emerging from a supermarket and carelessly yanking off plastic gloves and a woman aiming a mask at a rubbish bin as she passes, but missing and just leaving it where it falls.

Brawl turns really nasty A BRAWL over booze in a Palma park got really nasty, turning into a violent attack on a young man with a broken bottle. According to reports he had been drinking with another man in the Camp Redo park late at night. When one grabbed the other one’s drink they got into an argument. The other drinker smashed a bottle and went for the young man. He left his victim with serious injuries to his stomach and a gash on his hand before making off.
By this time several witnesses to the fight had called 091. When UPR Reaction and Prevention Unit officers arrived at the scene they found the victim bleeding profusely from the stomach. Moments later an ambulance arrived and rushed him to the Son Espases hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. A police investigation ultimately led to the arrest of a 27-year-old as the suspected aggressor on charges of attempted homicide.

Hunt For Belgian Couple Who Refused PCR Test
HUNT IS ON: Officers are working tirelessly to try and track the couple down.
T H E p o l i c e a re c u r re n t l y o n t h e hunt for a Belgian couple who were meant to take a PCR test to determine whether they suffered from the coronavirus or not. The Belgian couple were expected to show up at the Barbanza Hospital in A CoruĂąa, in Galicia, however, they failed to show up and now the police are on the hunt to track them down. Last Sunday, several medical sources
confirmed that the leaders of the health centre informed the police that the Belgian couple had not arrived for their scheduled testing. Therefore, the matter has now fallen into the authorities’ hands and will be considered as a crime against public health. The officers are now working tirelessly as they attempt to track them down, as there is a likely chance that they could both be infected with the coronavirus.

Pitbull attack A PITBULL terrier attacked and injured a policeman attending the scene of a burning hut in Palma in the early hours of Saturday. The dog reportedly leapt on the officer and bit him several times in the face while firefighters were putting out the flames consuming the shack next to the old Bunyola road next to Son Fusteret, which had been lived in by down-and-outs. The policeman fired a couple of shots to get the
terrier off him and the animal fled into undergrowth. The officer had to be taken by ambulance to a Palma clinic to be treated for injuries to his face. According to reports Local and National Police patrols had gone to the scene of the fire after a number of people called it in to the emergency services. When they got there they discovered the terrier was tied to a tree near to the blaze. They told the owner to untie and hang

on to his dog, but he let it go and it went for one of the policemen. It was also reported the dog was accidentally strangled to death when its owner tried to capture it with a steel snare after
the attack on the officer. Meanwhile it took Palma firefighters two hours to extinguish the flames, although they had to return a few hours later when the fire started up again.
British Red Cross IT was in 1859 that Swiss philanthropist Henry Dunant saw for himself the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in Italy and decided that he had to do something to relieve the suffering that soldiers and civilians had to cope with. In 1863 he founded the Red Cross Society and in 1864 his ideas were incorporated into the Geneva Convention which still survives to the present day. The year 2020 sees the 150th anniversary of the British Red Cross which was created following the brutality of the Franco Prussian War and it became a society under Royal Charter in 1908 and continues to be closely connected with the Royal Family as the Queen is Patron and Prince Charles President. Nowadays it is not so involved with the armed forces (although the Ministry of Defence owns the rights to the actual Red Cross), but is involved in assisting all of those in need in both the UK and across the world.

SHARP FALL: The islands received 92 per cent less foreign tourists between January and July than over the same period of last year. THE number of tourists to the Balearics plummeted over the first half of the year. Figures released this week by the national and regional institutes of statistics reveal that for every 10 visitors the islands received in the first six months of 2019, there was only one between the beginning of this year and the end of June. There were just short of 790,000 visitors over the six months, of which nearly 440,000 were foreigners. This compares with more than 5.5 million international visitors over the same period of last year: a massive fall of more than 92 per cent. National arrivals on the islands dropped by just under 70 per cent from approximately 1,158,000 to less than 354,000. In June, the same month a pilot tourism project brought German tourists into the islands via safe air corridors, the archipelago registered nearly 28,400 foreign visitors. In June 2019 the figure was in excess of two million. National visitors to the islands in June this year added up to almost 30,000, more than 91 per cent few than last year.

Share of fund pie THE Balearic Islands are set to receive nearly €105 million of the Spanish government’s Covid-19 Fund to ease the impact of the pandemic on regional government coffers. The Treasury Ministry order setting out the distribution of the first round of the €16 billion fund of €6 billion, published in the BOE Official State Bulletin, specifies that the archipelago’s share is €104,536 million. Balearic regional Finance Minister Rosario Sanchez expressed regret that the allocation for the islands’ administration “will not totally alleviate” the reduction in income and the extraordinary expenses due to
the health crisis given the major impact it has had on tax collection. The regional minister nevertheless welcomed the creation of the fund and the modifications introduced during the negotiation process on how much each region of the country would get. She explained that the Balearics will receive more than the average per inhabitant for all of Spain’s regions, with an estimated €420 million overall. Sanchez described the Covid-19 fund as an “important advance,” having been a demand made of the national government since the start of the crisis.

Tighter restrictions THE Balearic government has imposed tighter restrictions on get-togethers in the face of increasing figures for new Covid-19 cases on the archipelago. The administration’s regional Health ministry announced on Friday July 31 a limit on indoor family and social gatherings to 15 people and to 30 outdoors, whether at private or public premises. The maximum numbers had been 30 and 70 respectively. The change also applies to celebrations of a religious character which involve a party, a meal or similar, whether at the organisers’ homes or at places of worship. However it excludes weddings or similar kinds of celebrations; the maximums remain 250 people for

NEW RULES: Family and social gatherings are now limited to 15 people indoors and 30 outside. outdoor spaces and 150 in enclosed areas. Social distancing must be observed at all times at all kinds of events, the government reminds the public. The regional Health ministry also ‘reinforced the prohibition’ on all so-called ‘botellones,’ or boozy gatherings, usually of young peo-
ple, on the street or in any outdoor public place, including parks and squares. Posting details of the new restrictions on social media on Friday, the Balearic government stressed “Covid19 has not disappeared,” and called on the public to exercise “caution and responsibility.”

Support for UK nationals in Spain through major information campaign and one-to-one assistance INFORMATION CAMPAIGN THE UK Government has launched a public information campaign across Europe to help UK nationals prepare for the end of the UK’s transition period on December 31. UK nationals living in Spain will receive information about specific actions they need to take to keep their rights and access to services in Spain, including around residency, healthcare, driving licences and passports. The campaign will use multiple channels - including Facebook, digital media and newspaper and radio advertising - in urging people to take necessary action to protect their rights so that they can continue living, working and travelling in Europe after the transition period. This builds on the work the British Embassy and Consulates have already been doing to support UK Nationals in Spain. Hugh Elliott, British Ambassador to Spain is one of several British Ambassadors from across Europe, who is featured in a video encouraging UK nationals to take action which can be found here. UK Nationals Support Fund Following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, three organisations in Spain have received funding to provide practical support to atrisk UK nationals to complete their residency applications in Spain and secure their rights under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement. Age in Spain, Babelia and Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (IOM) are each receiving government funding to support those who need additional help to complete the paperwork required for residency applications. This may include pensioners, people with disabilities,
those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language translation or interpretation. British Ambassador Hugh Elliott welcomed the initiative: “Supporting UK nationals is one of our highest priorities and the assistance available through this fund builds on the support that we are already providing
at the British Embassy and through our network of consulates. Two week review THE pound has experienced some ups and downs in the last couple of weeks. News of a potential vaccine hailing from a lab in Oxford seemed to generate overall optimism that benefited sterling for a time. High borrowing figures from the Government were largely shrugged off as inevitable and while the spectre of Brexit loomed, analysts kept their focus on the more immediate future. Signs that retail sales stabilised in July according to the CBI’s Distributive Trades Survey and indications that there was a resurgence in the property market all helped the pound end the month on a successful note, making dramatic gains against the US dollar and climbing slightly against the euro. The euro made gains when the European Council approved a historic jointly funded programme to deliver a €750 billion coronavirus recovery package and a €1,074 billion seven-year budget. The Eu-
rozone Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) rose 6.5 points to 82.3 in the Eurozone and the Employment Expectations Indicator (EEI) improved for the third month in a row. Industry, services and retail all saw a sharp rise in confidence and this helped the euro make gains against the US dollar, although it lost out slightly to the pound. It has been a tough couple of weeks for the US dollar, putting in some of its weakest performances of the quarter. Signs that the US has yet to get the virus under control, delays to further packages of support and no clear road ahead are all contributing to a tough environment for the previously unassailable greenback. The Federal Open Market Committee kept its rates unchanged and appeared to challenge the Government to offer more support, stating that their role in supporting people through the pandemic was limited to “lending, not spending.” Fluctuations in the price of WTI crude
put pressure on the Canadian dollar and caused the currency more difficulty than the ecostats. The Loonie appeared unaffected by a jump in headline inflation from -0.4% in May to 0.7% in June, for example. Signs that investors were taking a relaxed attitude to risk benefited the Australian dollar for a while but without a constant supply of positive news, the Aussie was soon struggling. Despite PMIs for services and manufacturing reaching the growth zone, sharp falls in confidence did the Aussie no favours and there was no reaction to the dramatic slowdown in Australian headline inflation from 2.2% to 0.3%. Analysts kept their eye on the Trimmed Mean measure, which was up at 1.2% and has more importance for the Reserve Bank of Australia and future changes to interest rates. The New Zealand dollar benefited briefly from Business NZ’s performance of

Bank losses ALL Spanish banks are reporting a significant drop in profits for the first half of 2020 due to the lack of business caused by the lockdown. Many anticipate that even with a recession, income will increase in the second half.

UK House Prices Jump ONE of Britain’s largest mortgage lenders Nationwide has reported that house prices in the UK saw their biggest jump in 11 years. On average prices across the country have risen by 1.7 per cent in July which was far higher than economists in a Reuters poll had anticipated. To support this, the Bank of England revealed that mortgage approvals had quadrupled during June as compared to the previous month, although this was still lower than in previous years but the signs were promising.
Home Delivery CHINESE owned UnionPay International, said to have the world’s largest customer base, has entered into an agreement with Barcelona delivery group Glovo. Founded in 2015 and operating in 22 countries, Glovo is a fast delivery company specialising in take-away food and now UnionPay International customers in Spain and Portugal can use their cards through the Glovo App. With no delivery fees until August 15, the card is used widely by Asian students in Europe and is beginning to attract a number of Spanish based consumers.

Spanish Economy in Recession WHILST analyst and government economists expected that Spain would suffer serious economic problems in the first half of 2020, many have been surprised at the size of the drop in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) has released infor mation showing that the actual fall in the second quarter of the year was 18.5 per cent, much greater than the forecast 16.6 per cent which was in itself worrying. When you consider the incredi ble way in which the Spanish econ
omy had grown for 24 consecutive quarters and was approaching its situation prior to the 2008 eco nomic crisis, this is not good news. Looking forward and taking into account the first two quarters re sults, the end of 2020 sees a 22 per cent drop and Spain is entering in to the deepest recession it has known. There was some hope of a tourist recovery when Britain opened the ‘safe corridor’ but the imposition shortly after of the need to selfquarantine when re turning to the UK from Spain has

seriously affected the situation. Certainly, holidaymakers and second home owners from other parts of Europe are visiting the country, but the British do repre sent the largest percentage of visi tors and therefore any recovery will be marred by the nonappear ance. One area of good news is that whilst acknowledging that 2020 will have to be something of a write off economically, the Span ish government will receive grants from the European Union and be lieves that 2021 will see the return to economic growth.

Can he fight tax agency? Since 2015 I have kept a file on the UKSpain tax treaty of 2013 and the controversy about declara tions of civil service pensions, whether from June 12, 2014, or January 1, 2015. Which is it? Now I have been hit with a penalty of €2,180 for allegedly NOT declaring my public service pension for 2014. Given that I only received £7,000 in that period it seems extraordinary. The appeal to Ha cienda is exhausting and has been going on since Novem ber 2019. David’s answer to an earlier enquiry omits the possibility of invoking Article 25, which HMRC has recom mended. My income is the Public Service pension and UK state pension, the same income as in 2014. For 2019 they refunded me €5.60! They continue to deduct the penalty amount monthly from my bank account. I B (Costa del Sol) The tax agency fi YOU AND THE LAW nally declared that IN SPAIN the treaty was in ef fect for all of 2014. Invoking Article 25 will not help. If the tax agency has al ready garnisheed your bank account, your legal recourse is to initiate a ‘contenciosoadministrativo’ procedure, in which a citizen acts against the state. My own case took three and a half years.

THE European Investment Bank (EIB) and Spanish energy company Endesa are joining forces to promote electric mo bility in Spain. To this end, the EU bank will provide the Spanish company with €35 million in financing for the installation of electric charging stations across the entire country.

NEW VEHICLES: Some of the huge fleet. FOR some time there has been significant disquiet on the Rock over the number of new cars taking up space in what are supposed to be pub lic car parks near the centre, but the Gibraltar government has struck a £20 million deal to sell space and release central parking. Local firm, the Bassadone Automotive Group has agreed terms for the acquisition of two large areas, with one comprising the entire lower level underground car park and part of the upper level un derground parking at the Lath bury Sports Facility well away from the congested centre. The other is part of the Eu
ropa Business Centre at the Dockyard, adjacent to the new premises being redevel oped by the Bassadone Group to house its new showrooms, offices and warehouses. In addition, the govern ment has been advised by the Bassadone Group that it in tends to relocate part of its in ternational business from Por tugal to the new premises at the Dockyard, thus allowing it to take advantage of secure storage facilities close to its highly specialised workshops. Bassadone currently em ploys 320 staff in Gibraltar and this will increase with the opening of the new facility and transfer of business.
Spanish Uzbek Friendship AN Agreement of Coopera tion for trade and econom ic relations has been en tered into between the Embassy of Uzbekistan and the Madridbased Eurasian Business Alliance. The intention is to pro mote Uzbekistan as a suit able trading partner for Spanish companies and to share information with each other about potential business opportunities in each other’s region. The first area of cooper ation will see an attempt to attract Spanish investors to the implementation of a project for production of functional, dietary and ba by food using European technologies in the Khorezm region.
Waterstones faces problems BRITAIN’S largest high street bookseller Water stones is reportedly due to make a number of redun dancies in its London head office according to the Bookseller periodical. Having climbed out of losses following the 2008 crisis and overcome com petition from Amazon and other online book sellers, the company is now facing challenges caused by the lockdown. It opened its Covent Gar den store in June, but after just a week it has to close a g a i n d u e t o l a c k o f c u s tomers and most of its uni versity sites are still inop erative.
Charging Spain’s green vehicles The project, which will be implemented over the next four years, will make it possi ble to roll out a total of 8,500 charging points for hybrid or electric vehicles. The first 2,000 charging
points will be installed this year on the main motorway network and in Spain’s princi pal urban areas, with the aim of covering 15,000 kilometres to include towns and cities with over 35,000 residents.
This will provide electric ve hicle drivers with charging points every 100 kilometres and charging infrastructure in the country’s main towns and cities. The remainder of the sta
tions will be installed gradually over the next three years until 2023, reaching 8,500 publicly accessible charging points. All of these will be on roads or in public car parks with open ac cess for drivers.

Latest currency news After dropping at the start of July, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has re covered ground over the last couple of weeks, with GBP/EUR moving from 1.09 to 1.11. EUR/GBP has fluctuated between 0.89 and 0.91. GBP/USD, meanwhile, stormed from 1.24 to 1.31 and EUR/USD ral lied from 1.12 to 1.18. What’s been happening? While the Euro has been benefit ing from broadbased weakness in the US dollar, the common currency came under pressure as July drew to a close. New coronavirus worries in Spain
EURO: The common currency came under pressure at the end of July. and the latest Eurozone GDP figures put the euro under pressure, with the German growth data providing particular cause for concern. The German GDP release re vealed a largerthanexpected con traction in the second quarter. The Eurozone’s largest economy also slid in to deflation in July. The Eurozone as a whole suffered a record slump in growth in the sec
ond quarter of 2020. The Pound, on the other hand, has enjoyed a resurgence despite ongoing speculation about the UK leaving the EU without a deal at the end of the year. Sterling’s strength was derived from some endofmonth flows as well as the broad weakness of many of its peers. What do you need to look out
for? Next week one of the biggest cat alysts of movement in the GBP/EUR exchange rate will be the Bank of England’s (BoE) latest policy deci sion. While the Monetary Policy Com mittee (MPC) isn’t expected to make any changes, GBP investors will be keeping a close eye on the bank’s forward guidance. Any clear indication of negative interest rates could dent demand for the pound. Further Sterling movement could be inspired by July’s finalised PMI release. Confirmation that UK busi ness activity soared to a fiveyear high would be poundpositive. The Euro, meanwhile, may also edge higher if the Eurozone’s own final PMI releases for July are up wardly revised. However, the real focus for EUR
investors will be Germany’s latest industrial data. If German factory orders and in dustrial production continued to ex pand at a solid pace in June the Eu ro could recoup losses against the Pound and continue its march high er against the US dollar. It’s extremely precarious
ON the eve of Eid, which is loosely the Muslim equivalent of Christmas, the British government announced they were relocking down selected areas of the UK. It was not rocket science to realise that on closer inspection, these were in the main, parts of the country where the residents were predominately Muslim or ethnic. For regular readers, I don’t need to reiterate a column of many weeks ago, where I reported that a number of these areas were simply ignoring the government warnings and indeed in some cases being told not to worry because this virus ‘could not harm a hair of true believers’ and was merely ‘Allah’s revenge on the Infidels!’ This latest government order ordained that for at least another two weeks those living in these areas would not be allowed to meet up in each other’s homes or gardens. This of course is precisely what is customary during the Eid celebrations. Frankly, to me these instructions were so obviously directed at the Muslim population I thought the government had either finally grown a pair, or were in fact so naïve and knuckle headed they thought

EID CELEBRATIONS: Lockdown has been brought back in selected areas of the UK. it wouldn’t be noticed. Ha! Some ‘opes. I could actually hear the screams of ‘discrimination’ and ‘racism’ from here. Lo and behold a few hours later, in a hasty move that reeked of total panic, there was another governmental decree. They had now decided to reverse a recent directive in these areas and also re – ban the public from all sporting events, including indoor gyms, dance studios, bowling alleys, water parks, casinos and swim-
ming pools. Weddings would also once again be restricted to 30 people. In other words any establishment that the indigenous locals could have attended for a little social enjoyment were having their imminent opening permissions rescinded - thereby putting everyone in the same miserable boat, which neatly (or clumsily!) sidestepped any accusations of the government singling out any particular section of the population.
In other words, because of the lack of compliance and flouting of the regulations by a few super spreaders, the whole of the local population have been made to suffer, purely to avoid certain sections of the populace feeling picked on or becoming ‘offended.’ To me it’s the weak, capitulatory appeasement of a lily livered government that is actually the most disquieting. It also proves how assured they are that the beleaguered silent majority would be afraid to raise even a peep of discontent. No, the fact is that until we get some truly patriotic strength at the top, the future of the country and culture our ancestors fought to preserve is extremely precarious indeed. As a final word, and although I don’t always agree with many of his right wing views, I also found it disgraceful that last week Tommy Robinson and his family had to flee the country of his birth because his home had suffered an arson attack and they were in fear of their lives. Getting a good night’s sleep
A REFRESHING night’s sleep is essential to our health and indeed our beauty regimes (tired bags under the eyes just are not sexy) and although each individual’s actual requirements can be different, it is normally recommended to get between seven and nine hours sleep per night. There are ways to get a good night’s kip. Try to get into a routine with the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends. Your body will then adopt this pattern and you will be ready for sleep at the right time. A relaxing, routine before bedtime will enable you to wind down ready to go to bed. Daily exercise can help you to be tired when it’s time to go to sleep. Your bedroom should be free from any noise or light that could disturb your sleep. Check your room for noises or other distractions. This includes a bed partner’s sleep disruptions such as snoring. Consider using blackout curtains, eye-

shades and earplugs. Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. You will feel more refreshed and this will reduce aches and strains in the morning. Avoid bright light in the evening and expose yourself to sunlight in the morning. This will keep your circadian rhythms in check. Alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine can disrupt sleep as can eating big or spicy meals which can cause discomfort from indigestion that can make it hard to sleep. Switch off your mobile phone, television and computer well before bedtime, they invariably stimulate the brain, making it harder to get to sleep. If you can’t sleep, go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. If you’re still having trouble sleeping, don’t hesitate to speak with your doctor or find a sleep professional.

DROP THE EGO Depression hit and the walls were closing in. I knew I had to do something as I was slowly pushing away everyone I loved and I was about to lose it all. So how exactly do you quieten the noise? Can you set yourself free from a negative mindset? Hell yes! I studied hard for two years, I put everything into practice, I tested any different techniques, and now, I am here to show you how!!! We all have ‘voices’ inside our heads commenting on our moment-to-moment experiences, the quality of our past decisions, mistakes we could have avoided, and what we should have done differently. These voices can be really mean and make a bad situation much worse. The voice will always criticise and beat you down at every given opportunity. But the question is, why? Our
ego (or as I like to name her, the witch), feeds off self-doubt and fear. She can be a residue of childhood experiences - automatic patterns of neural firing stored in our brains and dissociated from the memory of the events they are trying to protect us from. If you try to ignore the voice or even dismiss it altogether, It can take charge of your whole life, enabling you to become a slave to the mind. This, in turn, will allow you to believe that the outside world is dangerous and that you need to obey her rules for living in order to survive and avoid pain. You will live your life existing rather than living! So how can you quieten the noise? Step 1 - I would like you to look at your end goal. What is it you would like to achieve? Think of your current goal, your dream. What does it look like? Where are you when you achieve this goal?
Who is the first person to share it with? Now take a moment to align with this next question. How does it feel to achieve your goal? Feel every emotion possible for the next minute. How do you feel? You’re smiling, right? You know what it feels like to reach your goal. You can see your success and know what it feels like. You can feel what it can do for you and your families life? 321... The ego has started. Am I right? Just as you picture everything you want to achieve, that is when she starts! Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. Step 2 - Acknowledge and understand your thoughts Write down everything, word for word that your ego/witch, is telling you. It is important to be completely honest here. You need to share EXACTLY what the voice is telling you. Next to each statement, write
the following, what physical evidence do I have that makes this thought true? The answer to be ZERO! There is no physical evidence to stop you from being successful. The only evidence you have is FEAR. Fear of failing, fear of judgement, fear of other people’s opinions, fear from past experiences. It is time to face those fears... Name one step you can take today that will bring you closer to your goal. Don’t think of the outcome. Ignore the ‘what if.’ Just give me one step, right now, without thinking about it. What can you do today that will get you closer to your goal? If you feel you will need more guidance, a hand holding approach and want to discuss your mental blocks in more detail, I am here to help. Not funny! Dear Euro Weekly News, Having just read your article about the consideration of closing French borders, I experienced an incident in Mercadona yesterday. Having obeyed the rules all through lockdown I stood behind the line at the checkout waiting for the people in front to pack, pay and move away.

ON Friday, July 31, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced his intention to ban the Chinese social network TikTok in the country, which Washington views with suspicion for reasons of national security. For those who don’t know what TikTok is, it is a social networking app that mostly shows short videos of children and many celebrities lip synching to songs or creating some actually pretty good dance moves. It is developed by ByteDance, based in Beijing and has achieved great success among the public, but at the same time it is claimed to have raised great doubts about the security of user’s data and links with the Chinese Communist Party. Tension between the US and China has increased in recent months fuelled by the Covid pandemic, for which the two countries blame each other. “As for TikTok, we are going to ban it in the United States,” Trump said in remarks to reporters, and added, “I have that authority. I can do it with an executive order.” Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted that the Trump administration was considering restricting access to TikTok in the States given the possibility that Beijing is using the social network as a means to monitor and distribute propaganda. After an hour of trying the app this writer saw no evidence of any propaganda, but quite a lot of funny pranks and families coming enjoying using it together. Surely this is just another example of Trump’s huffy baby rouine? TikTok general manager in the United States, Vanessa Pappas, warned on Saturday that the Chinese network has no plans “to go anywhere,” in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement to veto it. Pappas stated in her message that they are proud of the 1,500 workers they have in the USA and that they will create another 10,000 jobs over the next three years. “We don’t plan to go anywhere. TikTok is home to creators and artists to express their ideas and connect with people from different backgrounds. We are proud of everyone who calls TikTok home.”

As I put my purchases on the belt, the family behind me, (French, two adults and two teenagers, the lads both had their masks around their neck!), started to put their purchases on the belt just behind mine. I put up my hand and gestured to the distance lines on the floor, to which they just looked and carried on loading up the belt. I pointed again, and then the cashier also told them to stop and pointed to the floor to bring to their attention the warnings, they still carried on! She then left the till and walked round to them and pulled back the trolley to the line. No surprise Dear Euro Weekly, It’s not surprising that there is a large reduction in the number of people visiting Spain for a holiday from the UK. Regulations and government advice at both ends are confusing, restrictive and seemingly frequently changing, so we don’t know whether it’s advisable to go to Spain, what restrictions we will find, whether or not there are lockdowns if there are quarantines at either end, whether hotels are open when we arrive, etc, etc. Who would want to go on holiday when such confusion and concern exists? Closed borders and residencia, a Bridge under Troubled Waters AS consul for Denmark
CONSULAR MATTERS and a lawyer on the coast, I have come across an important issue for EU citizens living here in Spain. As an EU citizen, you are o f c o u r s e f re e t o t r a v e l w i t h o u t re s t r i c t i o n a n d this has always been the case. However, I apologise in advance as I am going to mention Brexit and the coronavirus in this article. The problem that occurred during the Coronavirus lockdown was that Spain closed its borders and people who weren’t Spanish citizens, residents, or cross border workers weren’t allowed to travel to Spain, of course, these people had previously
enjoyed the right to move freely throughout the European Union. Rightly or wrongly a number of citizens of Denmark and the United Kingdom amongst others had been living in Spain without being residents here. This meant that they were effectively blocked from returning to their permanent home in Spain if they happened to be in another country when the lockdown was announced. Had they been residents in Spain, or had their residencia then this would not have been a problem as they would have been allowed to return. Spain did have a very harsh lockdown so they would have had their movements massively restricted on their return. In the news, some EU countries and the British government has announced that
NO ENTRY: Borders were closed during lockdown. anyone returning from Spain has to undergo a 14 day quarantine period. In addition, a number of flights have been cancelled. Well, there is nothing that can be done to avoid the travel restrictions, but to avoid being effectively stuck in one country being unable to return to Spain I would advise everyone who is living here in Spain to apply for residencia. Remember to note that if you
stay for more than 183 days in Spain you become a tax resident. We have helped a number of citizens and clients with residencia. I would advise that you are very careful with people calling themselves advisors or consultants as they may not be a qualified gestor or a lawyer. As Consul I recommend you instruct a qualified professional. Now lastly Brexit, well the United Kingdom has left the EU
and the transition period will end on December 31, 2020. If you have a holiday home here in Spain there is nothing to worry about as long as you are happy spending 90 days or less in Spain in 180 days. If you live here you need to apply for residencia or residency. If you are British you can still apply for residency next year but the requirements will be more onerous. So if you are already living here you should apply for residency if you haven’t already and if you are in a position to move before the end of 2020 please do so. Remember you can rent or buy a property. Please be aware of unscrupulous people involved in renting and sales and always take advice from an independent lawyer regarding a lease or a property purchase.

Mikel Arteta’s side came from behind to win 2-1 in a game that rounds off a domestic season like no other. Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice after Christian Pulisic had put Frank Lampard’s men in front. Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic was sent off after what proved to be Arsenal’s winner for two bookable offences. Arsenal’s tally of FA Cup wins now stands at 14 more than any other English club. Aubameyang went on to lift the famous trophy - but not before dropping it. It is their fourth FA Cup in seven seasons. Arteta has now won the competition as both Arsenal captain and manager. Football

THE Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who became a legend with Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, announced his retirement from football on Tuesday, August 4, after a year and two months without playing after suffering a heart attack. This closes a career full of success at the young age of 39 years old. “The important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination to which it took you, because with work and effort, it will come on its own, and I think I can say, without hesitation, that it has been the path and the destiny I dreamed of. Thank you,” Casillas wrote on his social networks along with a letter announcing the end of his career as a goalkeeper. Based on his successes, Casillas became the best goalkeeper in the history of Spanish football and a world icon. RETIRED: Casillas became a legend with Real Madrid and the Spanish national team.
