GENERALITAT president Ximo Puig declared that there are no plans for blanket closures throughout the Valencian region. Neither the Costa Blanca nor anywhere else would return to lockdown although Puig admitted the possibility of closing “premises or certain areas.” The regional president was talking on Sunday, August 2, in Morella, Valencia, at a homage to the 23 people living there who died from Covid-19. “This isn’t a question of black or white,” Puig said.
Outbreaks have occurred in safe places where people were letting their guard down at family gatherings and celebrations or nightlife venues. It was vital to promote “maximum responsibility” amongst individuals and business-owners, Puig stressed. THE Covid-19 pandemic has inevitably affected the health of the region’s tourist industry. More than four million foreign tourists visited the Valencian Community in the first six months of 2019, compared with 1.2 million this year. Approximately one million foreign tourists visited the Valencian Community in June 2019, plunging this year to 31,487 between June 21, when the State of Alarm was lifted, and June 30, according to Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), a loss of 96.6 per cent. Of those visiting this region, the majority - 30 per cent - were French. The quarantine period on travellers arriving from Spain imposed by the UK and Norway amongst others has also clouded

Putting the brakes on A CRIMINAL gang suspected of importing high-end vehicles from Germany and tampering with the mileage to resell in Spain has been shut down by Murcia’s Guardia Civil. An investigation was launched at the beginning of the year after several complaints from people who had bought cars which went on to have mechanical and ‘wear’ problems. It became apparent the condition of the vehicles didn’t tally with the mileage reading. Officers discovered paperwork had also been falsified and traced the cars back to workshops and warehouses in Murcia. Three people have been arrested in connection with 15 cases of fraud. THE nephew of Murcia’s Regional Minister of Health, Manuel Villegas, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his father to death. Expert in sports medicine, José Antonio Villegas, 68, was killed on the doorstep of his home in Hellin. His wife called emergency services just before 8am on Tuesday morning, August 4, after finding his lifeless body at the front of the property in Calle Infanta Cristina. The National Police Homicide Group has taken over the investigation and a “young man of about 30 years of age, who could have some type of mental illness” is in custody, sources confirmed to Spanish press.
Safe tourism THE network of Tourist Offices in the Murcia Region has become the first in Spain to receive the ‘Safe Tourism Certified’ quality seal, granted by the Institute for Spanish Tourist Quality (Icte). On Monday, August 3, the offices on the coast and in the capital received their official stamp of approval and, over the next few days, offices in Mula and 13 inland locations will be presented with theirs. In total, 25 offices and

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy was seriously hurt after being hit by a car in the Murcian hamlet of Llano de Brujas. The 112 Murcia Region Emergency Coordination Centre received a call at 8.19pm on Monday, August 4, reporting a traffic accident which had left a
child in the road with a broken leg. Local Police and an ambulance were sent to the scene, and after being stabilised by health workers, he was transferred to the Children’s Emergency Service at the Virgen de la Arrixaca General University Hospital.

Leading the way EMPLOYMENT figures in Spain have finally risen after months of a downwards spiral and Costa Blanca leads the way in this positive trend. Despite the atypical amount of tourists in S p a i n t h i s s u m m e r, Costa Blanca’s Alicante has seen a 9,294 point rise in the number of jobs, which is mainly attributed to the hospitality sector. Overall in Spain, there has been an 89,849 reduction in the total amount of unemployment figures for the month of July, bringing the number of unemployed people in the country during July to a total of 3,773,034. This has been a 2.33 per cent decrease in unemployment figures for June, after four consecutive months of increasing unemployment, caused by the coronavirus crisis. In terms of autonomous communities, employment has risen in 14 regions, with Andalucia leading the way, as 21,901 people were employed. Seal of approval FIRMS in Orihuela have been given the distinguished SICTED stamp in recognition of good practices implemented in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The seal is granted by the Secretary of State for Tourism as part of the Tourism Quality SICTED project, and were presented to four companies in the town last week by councillor Mariola Rocamora.

Safe and clean USERS of skateboards and rollerskates in pedestrian zones in San Fulgencio face fines of up to €1,500. The penalties of between €750 and €1,500 will apply to anybody who uses skates or ‘drives’ on pavements or spaces reserved for pedestrians. The same maximum fine will be dished out to anyone who carries out any activity that ‘could dirty the public roads,’ which rules out cleaning cars in the street, warns mayor, José Sampere. “The ordinance prohibits the dumping of debris or any type of trash on the public roadway and unfenced plots of land, and sets out the measures to be taken by the owners of buildings or shops to keep them clean.” Sampere added: “It is not allowed to wash and repair vehicles on the street, and it is forbidden to abandon dead animals, to litter the streets with pet droppings or allow urination on building facades or street furniture.” The council is also urging people to make use of a household, furniture and garden waste collection service, available by calling 693 927 778.

ALICANTE UNIVERSITY: Joint Covid-19 investigation with UMH points to importance of climate. ALICANTE Province’s benign climate could have helped to put the brakes on Covid-19 in the province last spring. This theory was put forward by a joint report on the expansion of Covid-19 by Alicante University and Elche’s Miguel Hernandez (UMH) that was quoted in the local Spanish media. Researchers found there were fewer contagions in low-lying and warm parts of the country with high minimum temperatures, explained Jorge Olcina, one of the report’s authors and Professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at Alicante University. This explained the province’s lower incidence of Covid-19 last spring, compared
with Madrid or the Basque Region where temperatures were lower, Olcina said. The report stressed the role that the human factor played in spreading Covid-19 through the different zones that were analysed, but concluded that “environmental and atmospheric factors contributed elements that could aggravate or, conversely, slow down the intensity of the pandemic.” Olcina also pointed out that the period under analysis coincided with the lockdown when mobility had practically no effect on the spread of the coronavirus. “It made more sense to match it to meteorological and geographical factors,” he said.

The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the councillor for Emergencies, Victor Valverde, announced the congress will be held in the Auditorium of the CAM Foundation in Orihuela, during a meeting attended by Director of the Institute of Water and Environmental Sciences of the University of Alicante, Joaquín Melgarejo, on Monday, August 3. A close-up look at The Bank Job
LISTENING IN: Robert Rowlands was first to learn of the Baker Street Robbery.
ROBERT ROWLANDS, now living on the Costa Blanca, knows more than the average person about the Baker Street Robbery. Thanks to him, the police knew early on that a bank was being broken into somewhere in London on the night of Saturday, September 11, 1972. Robert, who was staying in his parents’ Wimpole Street flat at the time, owned an extremely powerful ex-US army radio, he explained to the Euro Weekly News. Without warning, this began transmitting walkietalkie broadcasts between a lookout perched on a rooftop somewhere in London and a group of men tunnelling into a bank below him. Robert immediately rang
the police who did not believe him but, when he insisted, suggested that he recorded the broadcasts. He later had an unproductive visit from six uniformed police from the Marylebone police station. Frustrated, he then rang Scotland Yard on the legendary Whitehall 1212 number. Officers there were more prepared to accept his story and told Robert with some complacency that it was always wiser to call in the Met. They too visited the house, learning from the walkie-talkie exchanges that the gang’s attempts to penetrate the vault had to be delayed owing to fumes from their equipment. Robert was unable to understand the police’s slowness in locating the gang and their willingness to search the 750 London streets with a bank, although he knew from the radio’s frequency that it was within a one-mile radius of Wimpole Street. In fact, a patrol did pass the Lloyds Bank branch in Baker Street, but was spotted by the lookout who raised the alarm, prompting
everyone to down tools. Police did eventually act on his suggestion and sent out one of the GPO vans that trawled the streets detecting unpaid television licences, but by then the transmissions had stopped and the gang had flown. Their haul from the ransacked safety deposit boxes was worth €30 million in today’s money and allegedly contained compromising photographs of the late Princess Margaret and actor-criminal John Bindon. “The Baker Street bank robbery could never have been pulled off today,” Robert said. “Lack of police coordination was incredible, not least the way that reports of loud noises from an adjoining restaurant were not linked to the break in. “But the MI5 D-Notice slapped on the whole affair at the time, did exist and so, almost certainly did those compromising photos of the Queen’s sister. “This also raises the question of whether the police were the bunglers that they appeared. Was it possible that they wanted the robbery to succeed in order to destroy the evidence of Princess Margaret’s indiscretions?”

Reunited with lost jewellery AFTER searching high and low, staff at Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia reunited one of their customers, Birgitta Vincent, with her missing gold ring. With huge sentimental
value, Birgitta was overjoyed that the ring had been found and presented staff with pink roses to thank them. Mrs Vincent had lost the jewellery when coming into the store to order her contact lenses and was distraught, as it was a gift from her late husband. She called the store in a panic, asking if the team had found it, and following a search of the store, it was found and returned to the grateful owner. Centre a reality A NEW multipurpose civic centre for more than 30 groups and associations looks set to become a reality in Orihuela Costa. Momentous change MORE than half a million euros is being invested in pedestrianising the ‘historical and commercial centre’ of Elche. Work on the 5,200 sqm transformation of the Corredora and Plaza de Baix began on Monday,
August 3, with the €540,000 project expected to be completed in November. “This will mean a momentous change for Elche and particularly for the Historic and Commercial Centre because it will revitalise economic and social activity and attract new businesses,” said Elche mayor, Carlos González.
Regional funding THE Valencian Community has received €1.350 billion from Spain’s Treasury. Of this, €449 million corresponds to the Covid-19 fund and €901 million to the autonomous communities’ finance system. The Treasury emphasised the central government’s commitment to providing funding for Spain’s regions, providing a total of €13.073 million to guarantee that they have sufficient resources to provide quality public services during the present health emergency.

DANIEL FAUS, whose partner Alejandra Garcia is charged with murdering his eight-year-old foster son Dominique, withdrew his private accusation against her. A NEW species of dragonfly has been located in the River Cazuma in Bicorp, Valencia. Biologist Javier Barona found the new species in 2017 while working on a Valencian Community investiga-
tion into the threatened insects in the Escalona river basin. Barona explained that the Bicorp discovery has specific genetic and anatomic characteristics distinguishing it from the Valencian Community’s 66 other
dragonfly species or the 80 or so that exist in Spain. Owing to its origins, it has been named Onychogomphus cazuma and is believed to be the first European dragonfly to be detected since the 18th century.

Crazed Woman Stabs her ex

ARRESTED: The woman was transferred to the police station and brought to justice. THE Local Police in Sevilla have arrested a 44-year-old woman for allegedly stabbing her ex-partner on Calle Evangelista, in Triana. The crazed woman was in breach of a 300-metre restraining order. During the incident, several officers appeared at the scene, although the neighbours noticed that the attacker, and the party she had attacked, had already left. A few metres away, they located the victim, a 59-year-old man, sitting on the ground with a bloody arm, asking for help. The victim had been stabbed in the chest and arm with his ex-partner, the at-
tacker, standing beside him. The police officers managed to separate them after which the male quickly fled the scene. However, he was found and transferred to the nearest hospital centre to be treated for his wounds. The incident occurred despite the fact that the aggressor has a restraining order against her ex-partner. She is strictly prohibited from approaching him within a 300-metre radius, a procedure that was confirmed in a court of Sevilla. Once arrested, the woman was transferred to the police station and brought to justice.
Police Officer Run Over A NATIONAL POLICE officer was run over last Wednesday by thieves who tried to escape from a robbery in La Cañada, Real Madrid. The thieves were trying to break into the Cañada Real when they encountered a patrol from the San Blas Police Station who were on another call where they were in the process of recovering a stolen vehicle. Seeing the chase, the officers tried to intercept the thieves but it was impossible for them because of the speed at which the car was moving. One of the officers fired several shots when he saw that he was go-

The Belgian couple were expected to show up at the Barbanza Hospital in A Coruña, in Galicia, however, they failed to show up and now the police are on the hunt to track them down. Last Sunday, several medical sources
confirmed that the leaders of the health centre informed the police that the Belgian couple had not arrived for their scheduled testing. Therefore, the matter has now fallen into the authorities’ hands and will be considered as a crime against public health. The officers are now working tirelessly as they attempt to track them down, as there is a likely chance that they could both be infected with the coronavirus.
A HEARTLESS mother in Spain’s Toledo has been arrested for leaving her two-yearold locked in a car during the suffocating heatwave experienced over recent days. A neighbour in the capital of Castilla-La
Mancha saw how the mother left her twoyear-old inside the vehicle in direct sunlight during 40-degree weather with the windows closed. Thanks to a nearby witness and their call to the 092 emergency services, the boy was
rescued from the vehicle. The Local Police had to break the car windows to rescue the minor who suffered from dehydration. The woman was arrested for leaving her two-year-old locked in a car and abandoning a minor.

AFTER a series of scandalous leaks about ex-King Juan Carlos’ corruption, the former head of the Royal family has decided to exile himself and leave Spain. This decision has been taken to help his son, the current reigning monarch, King Felipe VI rule without scandal. A series of alleged corrupt and immoral actions have come to light over the past few months, bringing with it reputational damage to the monarchy in Spain. The former king expressed his decision to move in a statement which was issued on Monday.
In the letter, he conveys that “his desire to be of service to Spain” is exactly what “inspired” his “reign” and that “in the face of public repercussion that is generated due to past events of” his “private life,” he has taken the “thoughtful decision to move, at this time, outside of Spain.” This decision has not been taken lightly “but with great serenity” and the former King who reigned upon Spain for “almost 40 years” contends that he has “always wanted the best for Spain and the Crown.”

Teenage heroes TWO teenagers have been hailed heroes after rescuing a 10-year-old who was swept away by the current of the Turia river in Valencia. Modest Héctor Ballester and Lucía González, both 14, claim they don’t consider themselves to be extra special, but are proud of having helped the young girl in distress as the river passed through Riba-roja on Sunday, August 2. The brave pair told Las Provincias they became alar med when they saw family members frantically looking for the young girl who had slipped into the river while playing with her brother. Without thinking twice, Lucia and Héctor grabbed their floats and jumped into the water. They said “it was a fight with the current which carried them about two kilometres” and added: “The girl was on a bed of brambles and reeds, above the water, and we told her to not stop screaming as we

couldn’t see her properly.” After several unsuccessful attempts to reach her, Héctor decided to go back to get help while Lucía stayed with the “scared girl.” After a while, the two girls slowly made their way back to safety, where emer-

Support for UK nationals in Spain through major information campaign and one-to-one assistance INFORMATION CAMPAIGN THE UK Government has launched a public information campaign across Europe to help UK nationals prepare for the end of the UK’s transition period on December 31. UK nationals living in Spain will receive information about specific actions they need to take to keep their rights and access to services in Spain, including around residency, healthcare, driving licences and passports. The campaign will use multiple channels - including Facebook, digital media and newspaper and radio advertising - in urging people to take necessary action to protect their rights so that they can continue living, working and travelling in Europe after the transition period. This builds on the work the British Embassy and Consulates have already been doing to support UK Nationals in Spain. Hugh Elliott, British Ambassador to Spain is one of several British Ambassadors from across Europe,
who is featured in a video encouraging UK nationals to take action which can be found here. UK Nationals Support Fund Following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, three organisations in Spain have received funding to provide practical support to at-risk UK nationals to complete their residency applications in Spain and secure their rights under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement. Age in Spain, Babelia and Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (IOM) are each receiving government funding to support those who need additional help to complete the paperwork required for residency applications. This may include pensioners, people with disabilities, those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language translation or interpretation. British Ambassador Hugh Elliott welcomed the initiative: “Supporting UK nationals is one of our highest priorities and the assistance
available through this fund builds on the support that we are already providing at the British Embassy and through our network of consulates. We are delighted that this project will help the most vulnerable UK nationals get the support they need to protect their residency rights and continue to live safely here in Spain. “UK nationals should visit our Living in Guides on gov.uk where they can find more information on the steps they need to take and how to access support.” This project is funded by the UK Government as part of the UK National Support Fund (UKNSF), which has made available a total of £3 million for charities and organisations to provide practical support for UK nationals living in the EU. Residents in countries including Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy and Poland will also benefit. The services available for people who need this additional support include: • answering questions about residency applications, such as
the documents required and application procedure • guiding individuals through the process, if necessary • supporting people facing language barriers or difficulty accessing technology IOM will cover Andalucia, Madrid and Murcia, Babelia will cover Alicante, and Age in Spain will cover Catalonia and the

Barbara moved FORMER EastEnders star Dame Barbara Windsor has been placed in full-time residential care after her Alzheimer’s worsened during lockdown. Scott Mitchell, her husband of 20 years, has said he had reluctantly acted on the advice of her neurologist, but the decision had still been immensely painful. Speaking of the day he left Dame Barbara at the home, Mr Mitchell said: “I feel I’m on an emotional rollercoaster. I walk around, trying to keep busy, then burst into tears. Tragedy for Singer Will POP IDOL winner, and singer, Will Young has tragically lost his twin brother after a longlasting battle with alcoholism and depression. Will shot to stardom after winning the very first edition of Pop Idol, an ITV talent contest, in 2002. His twin brother, Rupert Young, suffered from dysthymia, a depressive mood disorder which he was diagnosed with back in 2005. Although the specific circumstances of Rupert’s death are still unclear, Rupert spent years trying to battle his mental health problems. Rupert was in and out of the hospital frequently and his struggles with alcohol addiction caused

IT was in 1859 that Swiss philanthropist Henry Dunant saw for himself the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in Italy and decided that he had to do something to relieve the suffering that soldiers and civilians had to cope with. In 1863 he founded the Red Cross Society and in 1864 his ideas were incorporated into the Geneva Convention which still survives to the present day. The year 2020 sees the 150th anniversary of the British Red Cross which was created following the brutality of the Franco Prussian War and it became a society under Royal Charter in 1908 and continues to be closely connected with the Royal Family as the Queen is Patron and Prince Charles President. Nowadays it is not so involved with the armed forces (although the Ministry of Defence owns the rights to the actual Red Cross), but is involved in assisting all of those in need in both the UK and across the world.
LEAVING EU: Old protest against Brexit held in southern Spain. AN increasing number of Brits have flocked from the United Kingdom to Europe amidst the chaos of Brexit, and unsurprisingly Spain is the favourite destination
among Brits. Although the UK voted to leave Europe over four years ago now, there is still a great deal of uncertainty as to how and when this will officially happen.
In an attempt to avoid the negative consequences of the UK leaving the EU, many Brits have started to take matters into their own hands and migrate to other Euro-
pean countries. Data from OECD, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and development, shows that from 2016 to 2018, a total of 73,642 people migrated from Britain to EU states. This is much more than the 56,832 people who migrated from the years 2008 to 2015. Brits have not only chosen to migrate, but they have also chosen to take on citizenship in an EU country. For example, Germany experienced a 2,000 per cent increase in citizenship with nearly 32,000 Brits choosing to naturalise there. However, the most popular country for Brits to migrate to was of course Spain. The UK and Spain have always shared a distinct love affair with many areas such as Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Almeria specifically catering for their needs. There has always been a large British presence in Spain, and especially in the aforementioned areas, as between 2016 and 2018 a total of 21,250 Brits chose to move to EU’s sunshine state. Other popular choices for Brits have included Germany, France, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

Many presidents asked for common actions to be taken regarding Covid health and safety as currently there is no coordination or unification between regions which can be confusing for both residents and those travelling into different areas. As soon as Spain entered the ‘New Normality’ the central government ceded all the competencies back to the Autonomous Regions. know the details which each region has decreed concerning Covid health and safety measures. H o w e v e r, w e f i n d o u r selves with 17 different systems. Unfortunately, the virus, like the general public, doesn’t understand these differences. If we also add the factor
that the 17 presidents are making statements which are confusing and creating sensationalist headlines and general misleading news on social media platforms, there is a much larger problem. Overall there was no consensus with the Health and Safety measures.
On the other hand, Mr Sanchez did state that the Central government would handle the recovery fund that was coming from Europe, in this case, the 17 presidents were keen to handle their own budgets. Just like the budget from Europe, it would be logical to think that the central
gover nment coordinated the so-called ‘New Normality’ until we are back to the old normal. Considering that, it would be much easier for the general public to understand. At the plenary session of the conference, Sánchez stated that an Inter-ministerial Committee will be set up chaired by the President of the Government. He also specified that a Recovery Fund Monitoring Unit will be set up at the Office of the Presidency of the Government and a highlevel group will structure public-private collaboration. The Minister for the Treasury will head up the sector conference with the regional governments and cities, to establish multi-tier collaboration. Local authorities will also be able to take part in this governance process.

Home Delivery CHINESE owned UnionPay International, said to have the world’s largest customer base, has entered into an agreement with Barcelona delivery group Glovo. Founded in 2015 and operating in 22 countries, Glovo is a fast delivery company specialising in take-away food and now UnionPay International customers in Spain and Portugal can use their cards through the Glovo App. With no delivery fees until August 15, the card is used widely by Asian students in Europe and is beginning to attract a number of Spanish based consumers.

Spanish Economy in Recession WHILST analyst and government economists expected that Spain would suffer serious economic problems in the first half of 2020, many have been surprised at the size of the drop in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) has released infor mation showing that the actual fall in the second quarter of the year was 18.5 per cent, much greater than the forecast 16.6 per cent which was in itself worrying. When you consider the incredi ble way in which the Spanish econ
omy had grown for 24 consecutive quarters and was approaching its situation prior to the 2008 eco nomic crisis, this is not good news. Looking forward and taking into account the first two quarters re sults, the end of 2020 sees a 22 per cent drop and Spain is entering in to the deepest recession it has known. There was some hope of a tourist recovery when Britain opened the ‘safe corridor’ but the imposition shortly after of the need to selfquarantine when re turning to the UK from Spain has

seriously affected the situation. Certainly, holidaymakers and second home owners from other parts of Europe are visiting the country, but the British do repre sent the largest percentage of visi tors and therefore any recovery will be marred by the nonappear ance. THE European Investment Bank (EIB) and Spanish energy company Endesa are joining forces to promote electric mo bility in Spain. To this end, the EU bank will provide the Spanish company with €35 million in financing for the installation of electric charging stations across the entire country.

NEW VEHICLES: Some of the huge fleet. FOR some time there has been significant disquiet on the Rock over the number of new cars taking up space in what are supposed to be pub lic car parks near the centre, but the Gibraltar government has struck a £20 million deal to sell space and release central parking. Local firm, the Bassadone Automotive Group has agreed terms for the acquisition of two large areas, with one comprising the entire lower level underground car park and part of the upper level un derground parking at the Lath bury Sports Facility well away from the congested centre. The other is part of the Eu
ropa Business Centre at the Dockyard, adjacent to the new premises being redevel oped by the Bassadone Group to house its new showrooms, offices and warehouses. In addition, the govern ment has been advised by the Bassadone Group that it in tends to relocate part of its in ternational business from Por tugal to the new premises at the Dockyard, thus allowing it to take advantage of secure storage facilities close to its highly specialised workshops. Bassadone currently em ploys 320 staff in Gibraltar and this will increase with the opening of the new facility and transfer of business.
Spanish Uzbek Friendship AN Agreement of Coopera tion for trade and econom ic relations has been en tered into between the Embassy of Uzbekistan and the Madridbased Eurasian Business Alliance. The intention is to pro mote Uzbekistan as a suit able trading partner for Spanish companies and to share information with each other about potential business opportunities in each other’s region. The first area of cooper ation will see an attempt to attract Spanish investors to the implementation of a project for production of functional, dietary and ba by food using European technologies in the Khorezm region.
Waterstones faces problems BRITAIN’S largest high street bookseller Water stones is reportedly due to make a number of redun dancies in its London head office according to the Bookseller periodical. Having climbed out of losses following the 2008 crisis and overcome com petition from Amazon and other online book sellers, the company is now facing challenges caused by the lockdown. It opened its Covent Gar den store in June, but after just a week it has to close a g a i n d u e t o l a c k o f c u s tomers and most of its uni versity sites are still inop erative.
Charging Spain’s green vehicles The project, which will be implemented over the next four years, will make it possi ble to roll out a total of 8,500 charging points for hybrid or electric vehicles. The first 2,000 charging
points will be installed this year on the main motorway network and in Spain’s princi pal urban areas, with the aim of covering 15,000 kilometres to include towns and cities with over 35,000 residents.
This will provide electric ve hicle drivers with charging points every 100 kilometres and charging infrastructure in the country’s main towns and cities. The remainder of the sta
tions will be installed gradually over the next three years until 2023, reaching 8,500 publicly accessible charging points. All of these will be on roads or in public car parks with open ac cess for drivers.

Latest currency news After dropping at the start of July, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has re covered ground over the last couple of weeks, with GBP/EUR moving from 1.09 to 1.11. EUR/GBP has fluctuated between 0.89 and 0.91. GBP/USD, meanwhile, stormed from 1.24 to 1.31 and EUR/USD ral lied from 1.12 to 1.18. What’s been happening? While the Euro has been benefit ing from broadbased weakness in the US dollar, the common currency came under pressure as July drew to a close. New coronavirus worries in Spain
EURO: The common currency came under pressure at the end of July. and the latest Eurozone GDP figures put the euro under pressure, with the German growth data providing particular cause for concern. The German GDP release re vealed a largerthanexpected con traction in the second quarter. The Eurozone’s largest economy also slid in to deflation in July. The Eurozone as a whole suffered a record slump in growth in the sec
ond quarter of 2020. The Pound, on the other hand, has enjoyed a resurgence despite ongoing speculation about the UK leaving the EU without a deal at the end of the year. Sterling’s strength was derived from some endofmonth flows as well as the broad weakness of many of its peers. What do you need to look out
for? Next week one of the biggest cat alysts of movement in the GBP/EUR exchange rate will be the Bank of England’s (BoE) latest policy deci sion. While the Monetary Policy Com mittee (MPC) isn’t expected to make any changes, GBP investors will be keeping a close eye on the bank’s forward guidance. Any clear indication of negative interest rates could dent demand for the pound. Further Sterling movement could be inspired by July’s finalised PMI release. Confirmation that UK busi ness activity soared to a fiveyear high would be poundpositive. The Euro, meanwhile, may also edge higher if the Eurozone’s own final PMI releases for July are up wardly revised. However, the real focus for EUR
investors will be Germany’s latest industrial data. If German factory orders and in dustrial production continued to ex pand at a solid pace in June the Eu ro could recoup losses against the Pound and continue its march high er against the US dollar. It’s extremely precarious
ON the eve of Eid, which is loosely the Muslim equivalent of Christmas, the British government announced they were relocking down selected areas of the UK. It was not rocket science to realise that on closer inspection, these were in the main, parts of the country where the residents were predominately Muslim or ethnic. For regular readers, I don’t need to reiterate a column of many weeks ago, where I reported that a number of these areas were simply ignoring the government warnings and indeed in some cases being told not to worry because this virus ‘could not harm a hair of true believers’ and was merely ‘Allah’s revenge on the Infidels!’ This latest government order ordained that for at least another two weeks those living in these areas would not be allowed to meet up in each other’s homes or gardens. This of course is precisely what is customary during the Eid celebrations. Frankly, to me these instructions were so obviously directed at the Muslim population I thought the government had either finally grown a pair, or were in fact so naïve and knuckle headed they thought

it wouldn’t be noticed. Ha! Some ‘opes. I could actually hear the screams of ‘discrimination’ and ‘racism’ from here. Lo and behold a few hours later, in a hasty move that reeked of total panic, there was another governmental decree. They had now decided to reverse a recent directive in these areas and also re – ban the public from all sporting events, including indoor gyms, dance studios, bowling alleys, water parks, casinos and swim-
ming pools. Weddings would also once again be restricted to 30 people. In other words any establishment that the indigenous locals could have attended for a little social enjoyment were having their imminent opening permissions rescinded - thereby putting everyone in the same miserable boat, which neatly (or clumsily!) sidestepped any accusations of the government singling out any particular section of the population.
In other words, because of the lack of compliance and flouting of the regulations by a few super spreaders, the whole of the local population have been made to suffer, purely to avoid certain sections of the populace feeling picked on or becoming ‘offended.’ To me it’s the weak, capitulatory appeasement of a lily livered government that is actually the most disquieting. It also proves how assured they are that the beleaguered silent majority would be afraid to raise even a peep of discontent. No, the fact is that until we get some truly patriotic strength at the top, the future of the country and culture our ancestors fought to preserve is extremely precarious indeed. As a final word, and although I don’t always agree with many of his right wing views, I also found it disgraceful that last week Tommy Robinson and his family had to flee the country of his birth because his home had suffered an arson attack and they were in fear of their lives. Closed borders and residencia, a Bridge under Troubled Waters CONSULAR MATTERS AS consul for Denmark and a lawyer on the coast, I have come across an important issue for EU citizens living here in Spain. As an EU citizen, you are o f c o u r s e f re e t o t r a v e l without restriction and this has always been the case. However, I apologise in advance as I am going to mention Brexit and the coronavirus in this article. The problem that occurred during the Coronavirus lockdown was that Spain closed its borders and people who weren’t Spanish citizens, residents, or cross border workers weren’t allowed to travel to Spain, of course, these people
had previously enjoyed the right to move freely throughout the European Union. Rightly or wrongly a number of citizens of Denmark and the United Kingdom amongst others had been living in Spain without being residents here. This meant that they were effectively blocked from returning to their permanent home in Spain if they happened to be in another country when the lockdown was announced. Had they been residents in Spain, or had their residencia then this would not have been a problem as they would have been allowed to return. Spain did have a very harsh lockdown so they would have had their movements massively restricted on their return. In the news, some EU countries and the British government
NO ENTRY: Borders were closed during lockdown. has announced that anyone returning from Spain has to undergo a 14 day quarantine period. In addition, a number of flights have been cancelled. Well, there is nothing that can be done to avoid the travel restrictions, but to avoid being effectively stuck in one country being unable to return to Spain I would advise everyone who is living here in Spain to apply for residencia. Remember to note that if you
stay for more than 183 days in Spain you become a tax resident. We have helped a number of citizens and clients with residencia. I would advise that you are very careful with people calling themselves advisors or consultants as they may not be a qualified gestor or a lawyer. As Consul I recommend you instruct a qualified professional. Now lastly Brexit, well the United Kingdom has left the EU
and the transition period will end on December 31, 2020. If you have a holiday home here in Spain there is nothing to worry about as long as you are happy spending 90 days or less in Spain in 180 days. If you live here you need to apply for residencia or residency. If you are British you can still apply for residency next year but the requirements will be more onerous. So if you are already living here you should apply for residency if you haven’t already and if you are in a position to move before the end of 2020 please do so. Remember you can rent or buy a property. Please be aware of unscrupulous people involved in renting and sales and always take advice from an independent lawyer regarding a lease or a property purchase.

Not funny! Dear Euro Weekly News, Having just read your article about the consideration of closing French borders, I experienced an incident in Mercadona yesterday. Having obeyed the rules all through lockdown I stood behind the line at the checkout waiting for the people in front to pack, pay and move away.

ON Friday, July 31, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced his intention to ban the Chinese social network TikTok in the country, which Washington views with suspicion for reasons of national security. For those who don’t know what TikTok is, it is a social networking app that mostly shows short videos of children and many celebrities lip synching to songs or creating some actually pretty good dance moves. It is developed by ByteDance, based in Beijing and has achieved great success among the public, but at the same time it is claimed to have raised great doubts about the security of user’s data and links with the Chinese Communist Party. Tension between the US and China has increased in recent months fuelled by the Covid pandemic, for which the two countries blame each other. “As for TikTok, we are going to ban it in the United States,” Trump said in remarks to reporters, and added, “I have that authority. I can do it with an executive order.” Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted that the Trump administration was considering restricting access to TikTok in the States given the possibility that Beijing is using the social network as a means to monitor and distribute propaganda. After an hour of trying the app this writer saw no evidence of any propaganda, but quite a lot of funny pranks and families coming enjoying using it together. Surely this is just another example of Trump’s huffy baby rouine? TikTok general manager in the United States, Vanessa Pappas, warned on Saturday that the Chinese network has no plans “to go anywhere,” in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement to veto it. Pappas stated in her message that they are proud of the 1,500 workers they have in the USA and that they will create another 10,000 jobs over the next three years. “We don’t plan to go anywhere. TikTok is home to creators and artists to express their ideas and connect with people from different backgrounds. We are proud of everyone who calls TikTok home.”

Monday to Friday there is no need to set our alarms since at 8am the leaf blower begins his assault on our ears and by the time he has blown the leaves etc from one end of the street to the other, we are fully awake. Maybe they are proud to announce noisily that they are working, but like thousands of others living here in peaceful retirement, I am not amused. Gone are the days of the brush and dustpan operator quietly cleaning the street, while we gradually wake up to the sound of birdsong. Now, where did I put my earplugs! As I put my purchases on the belt, the family behind me, (French, two adults and two teenagers, the lads both had their masks around their neck!), started to put their purchases on the belt just behind mine. I put up my hand and gestured to the distance lines on the floor, to which they just looked and carried on loading up the belt. I pointed again, and then the cashier also told them to stop and pointed to the floor to bring to their attention the warnings, they still carried on! She then left the till and walked round to them and pulled back the trolley to the line. No surprise Dear Euro Weekly, It’s not surprising that there is a large reduction in the number of people visiting Spain for a holiday from the UK. Regulations and government advice at both ends are confusing, restrictive and seemingly frequently changing, so we don’t know whether it’s advisable to go to Spain, what restrictions we will find, whether or not there are lockdowns if there are quarantines at either end, whether hotels are open when we arrive, etc, etc. Who would want to go on holiday when such confusion and concern exists? World we live in is a strange place MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I DON’T like the new normal and, as many of my friends will tell you, I wasn’t that partial to the old normal! If I want to go out to eat I am now being served by a sweaty person in a mask which is sometimes over the nose and sometimes isn’t. The chef is sweating like a ….... fill in your own offensive, politically incorrect remark here. I left one place as sweat was obviously dripping onto the food he was preparing. It’s 40 degrees. He has a hat and mask and goggles on. Not entirely his fault but I’ll use the salt sachet on the table for seasoning if it’s ok with you. Then there seems to be a bit of an attitude problem around too. I ordered the bill in one place and got it pretty quick but waited nearly 15 minutes for change. It was way over the tipping amount so I wasn’t going to leave it. Finally I went over and asked why it was taking so long and was told in no uncertain terms that the waiter was serving on his own and
the other six staff there couldn’t use the till. No sorry - just the usual ‘if there weren’t so many customers trying to get served I could get on with my job’ attitude. Another question is who do I listen to about this Covid stuff? Do I listen to the doctors and scientists that have spent years studying for degrees in epidemiology and then years working in laboratories and hospitals doing research on every infectious disease known to mankind and treating patients with the most terrible illnesses? Or do I listen to the conspiracy theorists whose uncle’s brother’s sister’s aunt has it on very good authority that, according to someone they know, who has read loads of stuff on the internet, social media and the rantings of Trump’s new guru Dr Stella Immanuel or Katie Hopkins, that we are just being fooled by the Illuminati to let them inject us with a tracking device? I’m still sticking with the experts. You, of course, can do as you wish. The world we now live in is a very strange place. For instance, if you are driving down the road and see a magnificent tree you don’t stop and admire it. But if there is a terrible car crash you slow down to see what’s happening. Social media is a car crash.

DROP THE EGO Depression hit and the walls were closing in. I knew I had to do something as I was slowly pushing away everyone I loved and I was about to lose it all. So how exactly do you quieten the noise? Can you set yourself free from a negative mindset? Hell yes! I studied hard for two years, I put everything into practice, I tested any different techniques, and now, I am here to show you how!!! We all have ‘voices’ inside our heads commenting on our moment-to-moment experiences, the quality of our past decisions, mistakes we could have avoided, and what we should have done differently. These voices can be really mean and make a bad situation much worse. The voice will always criticise and beat you down at every given opportunity. But the question is, why? Our
ego (or as I like to name her, the witch), feeds off self-doubt and fear. She can be a residue of childhood experiences - automatic patterns of neural firing stored in our brains and dissociated from the memory of the events they are trying to protect us from. If you try to ignore the voice or even dismiss it altogether, It can take charge of your whole life, enabling you to become a slave to the mind. This, in turn, will allow you to believe that the outside world is dangerous and that you need to obey her rules for living in order to survive and avoid pain. You will live your life existing rather than living! So how can you quieten the noise? Step 1 - I would like you to look at your end goal. What is it you would like to achieve? Think of your current goal, your dream. What does it look like? Where are you when you achieve this goal?
Who is the first person to share it with? Now take a moment to align with this next question. How does it feel to achieve your goal? Feel every emotion possible for the next minute. How do you feel? You’re smiling, right? You know what it feels like to reach your goal. You can see your success and know what it feels like. You can feel what it can do for you and your families life? 321... The ego has started. Am I right? Just as you picture everything you want to achieve, that is when she starts! Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. Step 2 - Acknowledge and understand your thoughts Write down everything, word for word that your ego/witch, is telling you. It is important to be completely honest here. You need to share EXACTLY what the voice is telling you. Next to each statement, write
the following, what physical evidence do I have that makes this thought true? The answer to be ZERO! There is no physical evidence to stop you from being successful. The only evidence you have is FEAR. Fear of failing, fear of judgement, fear of other people’s opinions, fear from past experiences. It is time to face those fears... Name one step you can take today that will bring you closer to your goal. Don’t think of the outcome. Ignore the ‘what if.’ Just give me one step, right now, without thinking about it. What can you do today that will get you closer to your goal? If you feel you will need more guidance, a hand holding approach and want to discuss your mental blocks in more detail, I am here to help. Getting a good night’s sleep A REFRESHING night’s sleep is essential to our health and indeed our beauty regimes (tired bags under the eyes just are not sexy) and although each individual’s actual requirements can be different, it is normally recommended to get between seven and nine hours sleep per night. There are ways to get a good night’s kip. Try to get into a routine with the same bedtime and wake up time, even on the weekends. Your body will then adopt this pattern and you will be ready for sleep at the right time. A relaxing, routine before bedtime will enable you to wind down
ready to go to bed. Daily exercise can help you to be tired when it’s time to go to sleep. Your bedroom should be free from any noise or light that could disturb your sleep. Check your room for noises or other distractions. This includes a bed partner’s sleep disruptions such as snoring. Consider using blackout curtains, eyeshades and earplugs. Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. You will feel more refreshed and this will reduce aches and strains in the morning. Avoid bright light in the evening and expose yourself to sunlight in the morn-
ing. This will keep your circadian rhythms in check. Alcohol, cigarettes and caffeine can disrupt sleep as can eating big or spicy meals which can cause discomfort from indigestion that can make it hard to sleep. Switch off your mobile phone, television and computer well before bedtime, they invariably stimulate the brain, making it harder to get to sleep. If you can’t sleep, go into another room and do something relaxing until you feel tired. If you’re still having trouble sleeping, don’t hesitate to speak with your doctor or find a sleep professional.

The halo model has to be the ST with its hardcore sporting looks, racy interior and an engine note to match. Classic fast Fords have been in the ascendancy for some years and with new fast Fords like the Fiesta ST it’s not hard to see why. With six manual gears to work your way through, it not only looks the part but very much drives it too. It shares all the practical virtues of the more sedate Fiestas with space, folding seats and sensible running costs. The bright colours, snazzy interiors and driveability is what sets the ST apart.

THE LC Coupe is one of the most striking and innovative cars Lexus has built, its elegant and powerful styling widely acclaimed as a masterpiece of modern vehicle design. Lexus’ flagship coupe has always aimed to provide ‘even sharper, more refined’ performance, ever since its original concept.
Sharp and refined delivery Changes introduced for the 2021 model year deliver greater responsiveness, handling stability and agility, strengthening the driver’s feeling of being directly connected to the car and delivering an exhilarating driving experience. To achieve its goals, Lexus has made changes to the LC’s suspension system, saving weight and improving ride and handling quality. Adjustments have also been made to LC 500h’s Multi-Stage Hybrid system and the LC 500’s 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission. The coupe’s steering has also been revised and the brakes have been tuned to communicate a better feel to the driver.
Changes to the LC’s front and rear suspension have reduced the car’s unsprung weight by around 10kg, thanks to the use of forged aluminium for the lower arms; thinner, hollow anti-roll bars; and a new high-strength material for the coil springs. The springs themselves have been made stronger (increasing in pressure from 1,200 MPa to 1,300 MPa). The weight reduction contributes to the coupe’s dynamic performance, while further updates to the suspension to give a
softer stroke add to the stronger feel the driver has of the car being firmly planted on the road. In the front suspension, the electronic shock absorbers have been reprogrammed for a longer stroke, while the rigidity of the bound stoppers (front and rear) has been optimised, giving a smoother performance with less disturbance from fluctuations in the road surface. By adjusting the roll rigidity
of the anti-roll bars, Lexus has also improved the LC’s turn-in manoeuvrability, giving more linear response and again promoting a sense of unity between car and driver. Lexus has used big data to improve the drive force characteristics of the LC 500’s 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, to achieve even more faithful responses to the driver’s intentions. continuous acceleration. The technical adjustments also yield smoother acceleration and allow for an automatic downshift to second gear (instead of third) when braking to take a corner. The revised LC 500h benefits from a new control in the high-voltage lithium-ion hybrid battery that increases its operating range and allows more torque to be developed by the electric motor. This helps provide more powerful acceleration. For example, even with moderate pressure on the accelerator pedal, there is 90 Nm more torque output and battery output rises up to 17 kW, while vehicle speed increases by an extra 4 km/h after 4.5 seconds.
