GENERALITAT president Ximo Puig declared that there are no plans for blanket closures throughout the Valencian region. Neither the Costa Blanca nor anywhere else would return to lockdown although Puig admitted the possibility of closing “premises or certain areas.” The regional president was talking last Sunday in Morella (Valencia) at a homage to the 23 people living there who died from Covid-19. “This isn’t a question of black or white,” Puig said. Outbreaks have oc-
curred in safe places where people were letting their guard down at family gatherings and celebrations or nightlife venues. It was vital to promote “maximum responsibility” amongst individuals and business-owners, Puig stressed. A day earlier, the Generalitat president had announced that police controls would be stepped up over the weekend to ensure that anti-virus health and safety regulations were respected in pubs and discos. neither he nor the region’s Health chief Ana Barcelo, saw grounds for closing them down. In an interview given to the Informacion and Levante newspapers at the weekend, Ana Barcelo said that she doubted the economy could withstand another lockdown. She also rejected closing nightlife venues and
pointed out that young people would only look for alternative. “The answer isn’t restriction, but awareness,” she declared. Barcelo was also reluctant to predict a Covid-19 “second wave” but confirmed that the regional government was more than ready to cope with one if necessary.

Explanations needed Marina Baja water guaranteed
LES CANYADES: Campello residents have complained for years about smell and pollution. CAMPELLO councillors voted to ask the Generalitat’s General Advisory Council (CJC) to clarify modifications to the Les Canyades landfill contract. There was no desire to repeat the errors of an installation that failed ‘from the outset’ to achieve environmental and rubbish treatment targets, they agreed. The motion was put forward and supported by the Ciudadanos, PSPV, EU, Podemos and REDcv parties, although the EU spokesman was absent ‘for justified reasons.’ The Partido Popular and Vox, who control the town hall in coalition with Ciudadanos, abstained. Julio Oca (Cs), the town hall’s Environ-
ment councillor, defended the motion requested by the Asociacion de Afectados por el Vertedero. This group of residents living near Les Canyades, who are directly affected by the site’s bad smells and polluted air, wants the CJC to clarify contradictions in its reports. On July 31 last year, the CJC concluded there were no grounds for amending the landfill concessionary’s contract. Two months later, the council said there were “no obstacles.” “Things aren’t being done well, or at least not as well as they should be regarding topics as sensitive as our residents health and well-being,” Oca declared.
INCREASED rainfall during the first half of the year has guaranteed the Marina Baja’s water supply for 2020. Reserves were not depleted over Easter and the following months, as hotels, holiday apartments and second homes were closed during lockdown, explained Jaime Berenguer, the Marina Baja Water Consortium’s director and engineer. Torrential rain in January, followed by above-average rainfall in March and April brought 550 millilitres of rain - the Marina Baja’s average annual rainfall - in just six months Berenguer said. Storm Gloria classed as a DANA (Isolated High Altitude Depression) - also had a downside, as hydraulic infrastructure in the Consortium’s seven member towns suf-
fered significant damage last January, with some still awaiting repairs. Toni Perez, Consortium spokesman as well as Benidorm’s mayor, called on the central government to increase spending in this respect.
The Amadorio and Guadalest reservoirs need dredging to increase their capacity, said Perez, who recommended constructing new deposits where excess water could be stored, instead of having to send it downstream to the sea.
Re-think on beach capacity JAVEA councillors approved a motion confirming definitive capacities set out in the town’s Covid-19 contingency plan for beaches. These are higher than originally announced, with Arenal’s capacity rising from 2,000 to 5,025. Granadella has been increased from 200 to 603, while Portitxol-La Barraca can now hold 475 beachgoers compared with 150. Cala Blanca has a quota of 150, while La Grava remains unchanged with 225. Primer Muntyanar (El Benissero) can now hold 779 people and Segon Muntanyar 200.

Thank the climate ALICANTE Province’s benign climate could have helped to put the brakes on Covid19 in Alicante Province last spring. This theory was put forward by a joint report on the expansion of Covid-19 by Alicante University and Elche’s Miguel Hernandez (UMH) that was quoted in the local Spanish media. Researchers found there were fewer contagions in low-lying and warm parts of the country with high minimum temperatures, explained Jorge Olcina, one of the report’s authors and Professor of Regional Geographic Analysis at Alicante University. This explained the province’s lower incidence of Covid-19 last spring, compared with Madrid or the Basque Region where temperatures were lower, Olcina said. The report stressed the role that the human factor played in spreading Covid-19 through the different zones that were analysed, but concluded that “environmental and atmospheric factors contributed elements that could aggravate or, conversely, slow down the intensity of the pandemic.” Olcina also pointed out that the period under analysis coincided with the lockdown when mobility had practically no effect on the spread of the coronavirus. “It made more sense to match it to meteorological and geographical factors,” he said.

Surprise packets JAVEA’S Guardia Civil recovered packages containing 17 kilos of hashish from the seabed in Cala Sardinera. They were spotted by the occupants of a pleasure boat who immediately alerted the authorities. The packages were brought to the surface with collaboration from the Red Cross who used their rescue boat to ferry out the Guardia Civil officers to the place where they had been seen. An investigation is now underway to determine the origin of the drug, which could have been dumped deliberately to be picked up later or was possibly thrown overboard when the smugglers feared they were at risk of drawing the authorities’ attention. NOISE from a generator in a squatters’ villa is keeping the residents of three Denia residential complexes awake at night. The power company cut off the villa’s electricity some time ago, but instead of reconnecting the supply the occupants installed generators. “For days now we have had to put up with a deafening noise that

Julio Oca and Rafa Galvañ, respective councillors for Beaches and Public Safety, commented that families and groups of friends are organising dinners on the beaches or simply enjoying the cool of the evening, frequently staying longer than the stipulated 12 midnight. Beaches are closed between midnight and 7am, Oca and Galvañ explained, so that operatives and their machinery can clean and parcel-out the sands to provide the social distancing that is needed to stop the spread of Covid19.

Town hall offers incentives FINESTRAT councillors approved a proposal to reduce ICIO building licence fees. Discounts will range from 20 per cent to 80 per cent depending on the type of building, Finestrat’s mayor Juan Francisco Perez explained. The town hall hopes in this way to create more employment and put up more buildings for social purposes on municipally owned land, including a much-needed Instituto high school or a day centre. A public building like the Instituto would be eligible for the largest 80 per cent ICIO discount, with a 50 per cent reduction for a privately built day centre or residential care home. The mayor pointed out that the town hall was offering “very significant” discounts on licences for multi-million projects. “This is ambitious and very important because we are giving businesses an incentive to continue investing in our town,” Perez said. “What’s more we are focusing on employment, which is the best kind of social benefit there is during this sociohealth crisis.”

LAB NUCIA: Opened a year ago. VOTING for the world’s best new buildings has now ended. La Nucia’s Lab Nucia business laboratory is on the shortlist for an Architizer A+Award in the Best Government or Municipal Building category. Lab Nucia, which opened a year ago, was co-financed by the provincial council, the Diputacion, and La Nucia Town Hall. The avantgarde building,
already an architectural reference point at national and international level, was designed by Jose Luis Campos of Crystalzoo, an Alicante City architectural studio. The awards from the USbased architectural website, Architezer, are regarded as ‘Architecture’s Oscars’ and should Lab Nucia win the prestigious prize, it will not be the first time
for the Jose Luis Campos or for La Nucia. In 2016 La Nucia Town Hall’s Bello Horizonte Administrative Office - also designed by Campos - won Architizer’s Best Public Office of the Year award. Fingers are being crossed in La Nucia with hopes that Lab Nucia can beat buildings in Canada, the US, Sweden, and France.

computer access, others because they need help in translating or understanding the documents,” Residents’ councillor Martine Mertens said. “Sometimes those with mobility or health problems have also delayed regularising their situation,” she added. The councillor also explained that residents with green cards can exchange this for a TIE (Foreign Identity card) by following the ‘Switching from Green Certificate of Residency to a TIE’ instructions on the www.asociacionbab elia.org website. Crates carted off Name-change in Jalon
RECYCLING POINT: A €750 fine for anti-social dumping. JAVEA’S Local Police traced and sanctioned the person who dumped dozens of plastic crates at the P u n t Ve rd re c y c l i n g point. The town hall then had to hire a specialist company to remove ‘industrial quantities’ of crates from the recycling point on the Javea-Jesus Pobre road. As well as a €750 fine, the perpetrator also had to pay the cost of removing the crates. Javea Town Hall announced that it was
stepping up vigilance at all the town’s Punt Verd recycling spots in a bid to put an end to ‘inconsiderate’ behaviour. “This gives the municipality an appalling image and makes it more difficult for responsible citizens to use the recycling points,” said Javea’s Services councillor Kika Mata. The councillor also pointed out that the collaboration of the local population was “fundamental” in keeping the town tidy and avoiding antisocial actions.
JALON councillors voted in favour of renaming Avenida del Rey Juan Carlos I. This will now revert to the road’s original name of Avenida del Pla de la Sequia. “This was already discussed some months ago but acquired more importance following reports regarding the Rey Emerito,” a Jalon Town Hall statement announced, without referring to the scandal surrounding the finances of Juan Carlos who abdicated in favour of his son Felipe in 2014.

A BOAT with 11 migrants was spotted on Sunday August 2 five nautical miles (approximately nine kilometres) off the Sierra Helada. The boat, whose occupants said they were Algerians, was intercepted by the Guardia Civil and eventually landed at Benidorm’s Cala del Tio Ximo. From here they were taken to the port where they were attended by
the Red Cross who said later that they all appeared to be in good health, including two minors. PCR tests were carried out and the migrants then transferred to the field hospital attached to Alicante City’s General Hospital, where more tests will be carried out. So far it is not known if any of the 11 latest arrivals have Covid-19 although the provincial
Spanish media confirmed that according to unofficial sources, some of the migrants who arrived recently on Tabarca tested positive for the coronavirus. Ninety-nine Algerians in eight separate boats have arrived on the Costa Blanca between July 25 and August 2, landing in Calpe, Teulada, Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Alicante City, Tabarca and Santa Pola.
Summer lunch for Men’s Dining Group CALPE U3A Men’s Dining Group met in central Calpe for their latest meal. After the enforced lockdown and the group’s restart last month, this time the choice was a pub with British beer and traditional fare, although the wine was definitely Spanish. Seven members enjoyed great conversations, friendly service and good food. Although they dined in the shade, the weather was very hot and the landlord knew how important it was to swiftly refresh their glasses.

BENITACHELL Town Hall recently detailed its plans for rehabilitating Edificio Capellets, now municipal property. The regional government’s Reconstruim Pobles (Rebuilding towns) programme has provided €500,000 in funding which will be used to convert the Capelletes block.
This will have a new Tourism Office on the ground floor, with administrative offices and multifunction rooms on the upper floors. Ruben Martinez Dalmau, who heads the regional government’s Housing and Bioclimatic Architecture department and is a Generalitat vicepresident, recently visited
Benitachell, where the local mayor Miguel Angel Garcia and councillors explained their plans for the building. “It’s very important to us that you are helping in this way,” Garcia told the Housing chief. “The town has a very large deficit regarding infrastructure,” the mayor said.

ROBERT ROWLANDS, now a Calpe resident, knows more than the average person about the Baker Street Robbery. Thanks to him, the police knew early only that a bank was being broken into somewhere in London on the night of Saturday, September 11, 1972. Robert, who was staying in his parents’ Wimpole Street flat at the time, owned an extremely powerful ex-US army radio, he explained to the Euro Weekly News. Without warning, this began transmitting walkie-talkie broadcasts between a lookout perched on a rooftop somewhere in London and a group of men tunnelling into a bank below him. Robert immediately rang the police who did not believe him but, when he insisted, suggested that he recorded the broadcasts. He later had an unproductive visit from six unifor med police from the Marylebone police station. Frustrated, he then rang Scotland Yard on the legendary Whitehall 1212 number. Officers there were more prepared to accept his story and told Robert with some complacency that it was

always wiser to call in the Met. They too visited the house, learning from the walkie-talkie exchanges that the gang’s attempts to penetrate the vault had to be delayed owing to fumes from their equipment. Robert was unable to understand the police’s slowness in locating the gang and their willingness to search
the 750 London streets with a bank, although he knew from the radio’s frequency that it was within a onemile radius of Wimpole Street. In fact, a patrol did pass the Lloyds Bank branch in Baker Street, but was spotted by the lookout who raised the alar m, prompting everyone to down tools.
Police did eventually act on his suggestion that they sent out one of the GPO vans that trawled the streets detecting unpaid television licences, but by then the transmissions had stopped and the gang had flown. Their haul from the ransacked safety deposit boxes was worth €30 million in today’s money and allegedly contained compromising photographs of the late Princess Margaret and actorcriminal John Bindon. The Baker Street bank robbery could never have been pulled off today, Robert said. Lack of police coordination was incredible, not least the way that reports of loud noises from an adjoining restaurant that night were not linked to the break in. But the MI5 D-Notice slapped on the whole affair at the time, did exist and so, almost certainly did those compromising photos of the Queen’s sister. This also raises the question of whether the police were the bunglers that they appeared. Was it possible that they wanted the robbery to succeed in order to destroy the evidence of Princess Margaret’s indiscretions?

According to Spanish media reports, the company maintained that its product was “susceptible to comparison” with Gandia’s Safe Beach Kits and asked the town hall to “desist immediately” from promoting them. It was within its rights, the Madrid company warned, to start legal proceedings, including damages,
against the town hall. Municipal sources revealed that it has distributed more than 3,000 kits to date, with Gandia’s beaches full of families using the kits. The town hall also pointed out that in the past beachgoers marked out their chosen plot with towels, clothes or other items and the Safe Beach Kit was intended merely to provide a hassle-free way of maintaining social distancing.

DANIEL FAUS, whose partner Alejandra Garcia is charged with murdering his eight-year-old foster son Dominique, withdrew his private accusation against her. No reasons were given although Spanish media sources commented that he still visits Garcia, who is remanded in prison. He is also said to take their own biological daughter - who was born in jail - to visit her. According to initial evidence from Garcia who was 30 at the time, Dominique died during a break-in at the Elda apartment she shared with his foster father in August 2017. Both she and the child were attacked, she
claimed, and Dominique, who was autistic, died as a result. Inconsistencies in her story prompted an investigation lasting several months, leading to her arrest in May 2018 when she was four months pregnant. Police investigators claim that Garcia strangled her partner’s foster son and invented her complicated break-in story to cover the murder. Dominique usually lived with his foster mother, who had left Faus some time before, but was holidaying when he died. The trial will take place in November and the Public Prosecutor has recommended a reviewable life sentence.

Calling all cat-lovers PLANS are underway in Benitachell to control, and look after, the town’s cat colonies. Health councillor Isa Garrido, Local Police officers, the vet Veronica Catala and several vol-
unteers met recently to coordinate ways of controlling the local cat population. An initial meeting was held last October when it was decided to join forces to carry out a steril-
isation programme and since then the network of volunteers has increased. There are now collaborators in practically all Benitachell areas and on urbanisations who help to look after and feed existing colonies. Thanks to the progress made, the possibility was discussed of creating an official cat protection association in the municipality. Bureaucratic procedures and red tape are now being dealt with and another meeting will be arranged for September, to continue working in this direction. Vestiges of the past VILAMUSEU is supervising rehabilitation of the La Llobeta watermill that adjoins the Amadorio riverbed. A specialist firm is clearing vegetation whose roots were affecting the mill buildings, which are protected as an Asset of Local Relevance and are now being restored. It is the first step towards opening the complex to the public, as the mill was previously cordoned-off owing to its bad state. plained, including the tunnels that carried water below the building to the millwheel. This was driven by water from the Les Puntes irrigation channel, which can still be seen and was in use until the early 20th century.

A NEW species of dragonfly has been located in the River Cazuma in Bicorp (Valencia). Biologist Javier Barona found the new species in 2017 while working on a Valencian Community investigation into the
threatened insects in the Escalona river basin. Barona explained that the Bicorp discovery has specific genetic and anatomic characteristics distinguishing it from the Valencian Community’s 66 other dragonfly
species or the 80 or so that exist in Spain. Owing to its origins, it has been named Onychogomphus cazuma and is believed to be the first European dragonfly to be detected since the 18th century.
Texas Scramble in Oliva THIRTY-ONE players, including two guests, Richard Pike and Viv Bacon, turned out for Pego Golf Society’s competition 1 at Oliva Nova Golf. As expected for late July, it was a very warm day, which reflected in some of the scores. There were no Twos, so it’s a rollover to next week, but Nearest the Pin on Hole 16 went to Richard Pike with 45 centimetres, although incredibly he missed the putt. Nearest the Pin on Hole 3 went to Colin Foster. “Unless we wear masks in the pho-

BANK robbers used explosives to blow up an ATM machine at an Els Poblets bank in the early hours of the morning. The explosion was so fierce that it destroyed the façade of the Banco Sabadell branch, launching huge glass shards like ‘missiles’ against the building that faced it, police sources revealed later.

The same gang used an identical method to rob an ATM at the Gran Alacant commercial centre in Santa Pola three weeks ago and, possibly another in Torrent
(Valencia), not long before the State of Alarm was announced last March. CCTV footage later showed several people, all with their faces hidden by masks. Ini-
tially it looked as though they had approached the ATM to withdraw money, while they were in fact putting the explosives in place, sources said afterwards.
Face mask flouters in numbers GANDIA’S Local Police fined 1,039 people for not wearing face masks between July 18 and July 28. This corresponded to the same period when the regional government’s Health department ordered the closure of Gandia’s discos and pubs following a Covid-19 outbreak that originated in night-time venues. This also coincided with the legal obligation of wearing masks indoors and outside even when social distancing was possible, with the prospect of a €100 fine for non-compliance. press, face mask flouters fell roughly into two groups, the first of which were 17 to 25-year-olds who were usually fined at night. The second group were adults of between 45 and 55, and the majority were fined either in the late afternoon or early evening. There were also sanctions for
112 hospitality trade businesses for putting out more terrace tables than they were entitled to, with another six for ignoring capacity limitations. Gandia Town Hall has also warned that there will be no letup in patrols or fines over the next few days.

ARRESTED: The woman was transferred to the police station and brought to justice. THE Local Police in Sevilla have arrested a 44-year-old woman for allegedly stabbing her ex-partner on Calle Evangelista, in Triana. The crazed woman was in breach of a 300-metre restraining order. During the incident, several officers appeared at the scene, although the neighbours noticed that the attacker, and the party she had attacked, had already left. A few metres away, they located the victim, a 59-year-old man, sitting on the ground with a bloody arm, asking for help. The victim had been stabbed in the chest and arm with his ex-partner, the at-
tacker, standing beside him. The police officers managed to separate them after which the male quickly fled the scene. However, he was found and transferred to the nearest hospital centre to be treated for his wounds. The incident occurred despite the fact that the aggressor has a restraining order against her ex-partner. She is strictly prohibited from approaching him within a 300-metre radius, a procedure that was confirmed in a court of Sevilla. Once arrested, the woman was transferred to the police station and brought to justice.

AFTER a series of scandalous leaks about ex-King Juan Carlos’ corruption, the former head of the Royal family has decided to exile himself and leave Spain. This decision has been taken to help his son, the current reigning monarch, King Felipe VI rule without scandal. A series of alleged corrupt and immoral actions have come to light over the past few months, bringing with it reputational damage to the monarchy in Spain. The former king expressed his decision to move in a statement which was issued on Monday.
In the letter, he conveys that “his desire to be of service to Spain” is exactly what “inspired” his “reign” and that “in the face of public repercussion that is generated due to past events of” his “private life,” he has taken the “thoughtful decision to move, at this time, outside of Spain.” This decision has not been taken lightly “but with great serenity” and the former King who reigned upon Spain for “almost 40 years” contends that he has “always wanted the best for Spain and the Crown.”
Police Officer Run Over A NATIONAL POLICE officer was run over last Wednesday by thieves who tried to escape from a robbery in La Cañada, Real Madrid. The thieves were trying to break into the Cañada Re-
al when they encountered a patrol from the San Blas Police Station who were on another call where they were in the process of recovering a stolen vehicle. Seeing the chase, the officers tried to intercept the thieves but it was impossible for them because of the speed at which the car was moving. One of the officers fired several shots when he saw that he was going to be run over, but the robbers just aimed directly at him. The Samur-Civil Protection Medical Team treated
the injured officer for pelvic trauma and transferred him to the Gregorio Marañón Hospital, according to Efe Emergencias Madrid. Rescuers also assisted the two thieves with gunshot wounds, although their injuries were not serious. The first, a 34-year-old man, had two gunshot wounds to his legs and was taken to Hospital 12 de Octubre. The other involved, a 35-year-old individual, was wounded in the inner limb and the arm and was taken to the La Paz Hospital.

Honouring victims ALMERIA City’s cathedral was the setting on the evening of July 29 for a moving funeral mass for the 53 people in the province who have lost their lives to Covid-19. Bishop Adolfo Gonzalez Montes presided over the celebration of the Eucharist in a service attended by many of Almeria’s dignitaries, among them local, provincial, regional and national politicians and representatives from the police, Guardia Civil, the army and the navy. Also present were members of the victims’ families. “They are a lot of victims, but even if it had only been one we would have been here,” the Almeria provincial council president Javier A Garcia told Spanish press. “More than ever we are with the 53 victims who could not overcome Covid-19 and their fami-
lies, in their memory and in their honour,” commented Junta de Andalucia provincial delegate Maribel Sanchez. “That it serves so we never forget that this society can fight against any pandemic, and the one we still have, so not one more life is lost.” Almeria City mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco described the ceremony as a “sign of respect and mourning for the people who have lost their lives in this pandemic, as well as for their families and their loved ones, and for those who are ill and fighting against the virus in the hospitals and at home.” The religious act was also for “all those people who have lost their businesses and jobs and who have been hammered by this crisis, with the hope we will regain the normality we enjoyed before as soon as possible,” the mayor added.
AN increasing number of Brits have flocked from the United Kingdom to Europe amidst the chaos of Brexit, and unsurprisingly Spain is the favourite destination among Brits. Although the UK voted to leave Europe over four years ago now, there is still a great deal of uncertainty as to how and when this will officially happen. Data from OECD, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and development, shows that from 2016 to 2018, a total of 73,642 people migrated from Britain to EU states. This is much more than the 56,832 people who migrated from the years 2008 to 2015. Brits have not only chosen to migrate, but they have also chosen to take on citizenship in an EU country. Last Sunday, several medical sources
confirmed that the leaders of the health centre informed the police that the Belgian couple had not arrived for their scheduled testing. Therefore, the matter has now fallen into the authorities’ hands and will be considered as a crime against public health. The officers are now working tirelessly as they attempt to track them down, as there is a likely chance that they could both be infected with the coronavirus.
A HEARTLESS mother in Spain’s Toledo has been arrested for leaving her two-yearold locked in a car during the suffocating heatwave experienced over recent days. A neighbour in the capital of Castilla-La
Mancha saw how the mother left her twoyear-old inside the vehicle in direct sunlight during 40-degree weather with the windows closed. Thanks to a nearby witness and their call to the 092 emergency services, the boy was
rescued from the vehicle. The Local Police had to break the car windows to rescue the minor who suffered from dehydration. The woman was arrested for leaving her two-year-old locked in a car and abandoning a minor.

LAST Friday, July 31, Pedro Sanchez had a meeting with the 17 Presidents from the Autonomous Regions at the 21st Confere n c e o f R e g i o n a l P re s i dents which concentrated on the management of resources covered by the European Recovery Fund, and on the Covid-19 health crisis. Many presidents asked for common actions to be taken regarding Covid health and safety as currently there is no coordination or unification between regions which can be confusing for both residents and those travelling into different areas. As soon as Spain entered the ‘New Normality’ the central government ceded all the competencies back to the Autonomous Regions. know the details which each region has decreed concerning Covid health and safety measures. H o w e v e r, w e f i n d o u r selves with 17 different systems. Unfortunately, the virus, like the general public, doesn’t understand these differences. If we also add the factor
that the 17 presidents are making statements which are confusing and creating sensationalist headlines and general misleading news on social media platforms, there is a much larger problem. Overall there was no consensus with the Health and Safety measures.
On the other hand, Mr Sanchez did state that the Central government would handle the recovery fund that was coming from Europe, in this case, the 17 presidents were keen to handle their own budgets. Just like the budget from Europe, it would be logical to think that the central
gover nment coordinated the so-called ‘New Normality’ until we are back to the old normal. Considering that, it would be much easier for the general public to understand. At the plenary session of the conference, Sánchez stated that an Inter-ministerial Committee will be set up chaired by the President of the Government. He also specified that a Recovery Fund Monitoring Unit will be set up at the Office of the Presidency of the Government and a highlevel group will structure public-private collaboration. The Minister for the Treasury will head up the sector conference with the regional governments and cities, to establish multi-tier collaboration. Local authorities will also be able to take part in this governance process.

Support for UK nationals in Spain through major information campaign and one-to-one assistance INFORMATION CAMPAIGN THE UK Government has launched a public information campaign across Europe to help UK nationals prepare for the end of the UK’s transition period on December 31. UK nationals living in Spain will receive information about specific actions they need to take to keep their rights and access to services in Spain, including around residency, healthcare, driving licences and passports. The campaign will use multiple channels - including Facebook, digital media and newspaper and radio advertising - in urging people to take necessary action to protect their rights so that they can continue living, working and travelling in Europe after the transition period.
This builds on the work the British Embassy and Consulates have already been doing to support UK Nationals in Spain. Hugh Elliott, British Ambassador to Spain is one of several British Ambassadors from across Europe, who is featured in a video encouraging UK nationals to take action which can be found here. UK Nationals Support Fund Following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, three organisations in Spain have received funding to provide practical support to at-risk UK nationals to complete their residency applications in Spain and secure their rights under the UK-EU
Withdrawal Agreement. Age in Spain, Babelia and Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (IOM) are each receiving government funding to support those who need additional help to complete the paperwork required for residency applications. This may include pensioners, people with disabilities, those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language translation or interpretation. British Ambassador Hugh Elliott welcomed the initiative: “Supporting UK nationals is one of our highest priorities and the assistance available through this fund builds on the support that we are already providing at the British Embassy and through our network of consulates. We are delighted that this project will help the most vulnerable UK nationals get the support they need to protect their residency rights and continue to live safely here in Spain. “UK nationals should visit our Living in Guides on gov.uk where they can find more information on the steps they need to take and how to access support.” This project is funded by the UK Government as part
of the UK National Support Fund (UKNSF), which has made available a total of £3 million for charities and organisations to provide practical support for UK nationals living in the EU. Residents in countries including Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy and Poland will also benefit. The services available for people who need this additional support include: • answering questions about residency applications, such as the documents required and application procedure • guiding individuals through the process, if necessary • supporting people facing language barriers or difficulty accessing technology IOM will cover Andalucia, Madrid and Murcia, Babelia will cover Alicante, and Age in Spain will cover Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. There will also be information provided through the organisations’ websites and helplines, which will be available for people across Spain. Barbara moved FORMER EastEnders star Dame Barbara Windsor has been placed in full-time residential care after her Alzheimer’s worsened during lockdown. Scott Mitchell, her husband of 20 years, has said he had reluctantly acted on the advice of her neurologist, but the decision had still been immensely painful. Speaking of the day he left Dame Barbara at the home, Mr Mitchell said: “I feel I’m on an emotional rollercoaster. I walk around, trying to keep busy, then burst into tears. It feels like a bereavement. “It’s always been my biggest fear that one day I would have to take her somewhere and she’d be thinking: ‘Why would he do this to me?’ That fear has become a reality. It’s something I never wanted. I’ll never forget the feeling of emptiness. I felt

Benidorm Double trouble AVOIDING the demolition of the two Gemelos 28 tower blocks in the Rincon de Loix is beginning to look complicated. Last-gasp hopes of reaching a solution through Valencia’s Court of Mediation and Arbitration foundered as the procedure ordered earlier this year by the region’s Upper Court of Justice (TSJ) came to an end. In 2012 the Supreme Court upheld the TSJ’s decision to cancel planning permission for the two 22storey buildings with 168 apartments. This was granted by the regional government of the day in 2005 but the TSJ, and later the Supreme Court, agreed that the blocks encroached on public right-
of-way land on the maritime strip. Carrying out the sentence, which derived from legal proceedings brought by a private individual, has been pending ever since. The developers and some proprietors have fought to prevent the demolition. So, too, has the Generalitat which would have to pay the €100 million cost of demolishing the buildings and removing thousands of tons of rubble. All involved maintain that demolition is impracticable and sources close to the case, quoted in the local Spanish media, revealed that the Administration is likely to claim that it would also be environmentally inviable.

Brit stands trial for alleged rape AN extradited Briton awaits sentencing by the Alicante High Court after being tried for rape. The case goes back to July 2008 when he and a friend allegedly raped a British girl. The friend, who returned to Spain and stood trial in 2014, was acquitted by the Alicante High Court. Although the accused admitted meeting the young woman in a pub, he maintained his innocence and denied the attack which he supposedly carried out in the early hours of the morning on the Levante Beach while a friend restrained her. If found guilty he faces a nine-year sentence recommended by the Fiscal (Public Prosecutor) or 10 years requested by the private accusation. At the end of the trial he was released with the consent of the court, the Fiscal and the private accusation on the grounds that he had been imprisoned for some time before the hearing to ensure that he finally reached court.

CALPE’S electric personal mobility vehicle (PMV) by-laws come into force on August 14. Although this covers all single-seat PMVs, these principally affect electric scooters. These will be barred from pavements, parks and promenades, with an exception made for persons with mobility problems who use an electric wheelchair. PMVs will be allowed to use cycle lanes, streets with a 30 kilometre per hour speed limit and residential roads with a 20 kilometre per hour limit. Scooters may not be parked on pavements,
but should use the spaces reserved for bicycles and mopeds. They may not be attached to trees, lampposts or any other urban fixture. Groups organised by hire firms should be limited to six and must be accompanied by a guide. Users should be over 16 or licensed to use a moped, must wear a helmet and carry proof of third-party insurance on them. Anyone failing to comply with the rules risks a fine of between €750 and €3,000, depending on the type of infraction, Calpe Town Hall warned.

A temporary solution has been found to solve beachgoers’ parking problems during the summer season, Teulada-Moraira Town Hall’s Urban Development Vicenta Ferrando announced. Following talks with the owners of an unused parcel adjoining Calle Puerto Espindola and Calle Puerto Espasante, it has been agreed that the plot can be used to alleviate the ongoing parking problems at El Portet. Municipal employees have now cleared the plot of weeds and vegetation but have left the pine needles that cover the ground, as these will help to lay the dust, the town hall explained.

Resources under diagnosis TEULADA-MORAIRA Town Hall is assessing its Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals. Agenda 2030 is global commitment to eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable development by 2030 “that noone is left behind” according to the UN. The Sustainable Development Goals are intended as a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.” In Teulada-Moraira, the assessment
process is in the hands of the town hall’s Environment department and will determine progress made on reaching targets. This is being carried with a SWOT strategic planning technique that will identify Teulada-Moraira’s existing resources that could be used in each area under examination or allocated to related activities. “Citizen Participation is essential as local knowledge, information, suggestions and proposals are involved,” the town hall said.
Rapid action stemmed fire damage WHAT could have been a disastrous fire in a Teulada-Moraira agricultural area near residential properties was soon controlled. The alarm was raised at approximately 4.15pm when smoke was reported in the Cami de l’Ombria, with Teulada-Moraira’s Local Police and Proteccion Civil the first to arrive at the scene. There was immediate backup from local fire brigades and two forest-firefighting units assisted by two Generalitat firefighting aircraft. The fire was under control by 6.30pm but although two hectares of agricultural terracing were affected by the blaze, no-one was injured and there were no material losses.

Drugs baby’s aunt arrested JUDICIAL POLICE officers at Calpe’s Guardia Civil post arrested the aunt of a baby who tested positive for cocaine and hashish. The aunt was detained after the criminal investigation unit concluded that the parents of the nine-month-old girl were not responsible for the incident. At the time of writing, the child was out of danger but remained in Denia hospital where she was taken for tests while the regional government’s Equality and Inclusive Policies department decided whether it
was safe to return her to her parents. Because they were working, the baby was left with her aunt, a Spanish woman of 33 who was celebrating a birthday party at a rented Calpe villa where only women and children were present. The aunt noticed that the baby had taken a cigarette packet from the floor and put part of its contents in her mouth. Aware that there were drugs inside, the woman rushed her to A and E at Denia hospital where urine and blood tests revealed that there were ‘relevant quantities’ in her body.

Home Delivery CHINESE owned UnionPay International, said to have the world’s largest customer base, has entered into an agreement with Barcelona delivery group Glovo. Founded in 2015 and operating in 22 countries, Glovo is a fast delivery company specialising in take-away food and now UnionPay International customers in Spain and Portugal can use their cards through the Glovo App. With no delivery fees until August 15, the card is used widely by Asian students in Europe and is beginning to attract a number of Spanish based consumers.

Spanish Economy in Recession WHILST analyst and government economists expected that Spain would suffer serious economic problems in the first half of 2020, many have been surprised at the size of the drop in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) has released infor mation showing that the actual fall in the second quarter of the year was 18.5 per cent, much greater than the forecast 16.6 per cent which was in itself worrying. When you consider the incredi ble way in which the Spanish econ
omy had grown for 24 consecutive quarters and was approaching its situation prior to the 2008 eco nomic crisis, this is not good news. Looking forward and taking into account the first two quarters re sults, the end of 2020 sees a 22 per cent drop and Spain is entering in to the deepest recession it has known. There was some hope of a tourist recovery when Britain opened the ‘safe corridor’ but the imposition shortly after of the need to selfquarantine when re turning to the UK from Spain has

seriously affected the situation. Certainly, holidaymakers and second home owners from other parts of Europe are visiting the country, but the British do repre sent the largest percentage of visi tors and therefore any recovery will be marred by the nonappear ance. One area of good news is that whilst acknowledging that 2020 will have to be something of a write off economically, the Span ish government will receive grants from the European Union and be lieves that 2021 will see the return to economic growth.

Since 2015 I have kept a file on the UKSpain tax treaty of 2013 and the controversy about declara tions of civil service pensions, whether from June 12, 2014, or January 1, 2015. Which is it? Now I have been hit with a penalty of €2,180 for allegedly NOT declaring my public service pension for 2014. Given that I only received £7,000 in that period it seems extraordinary. The appeal to Ha cienda is exhausting and has been going on since Novem ber 2019. David’s answer to an earlier enquiry omits the possibility of invoking Article 25, which HMRC has recom mended. My income is the Public Service pension and UK state pension, the same income as in 2014. For 2019 they refunded me €5.60! They continue to deduct the penalty amount monthly from my bank account. I B (Costa del Sol) The tax agency fi YOU AND THE LAW nally declared that IN SPAIN the treaty was in ef fect for all of 2014. Invoking Article 25 will not help. If the tax agency has al ready garnisheed your bank account, your legal recourse is to initiate a ‘contenciosoadministrativo’ procedure, in which a citizen acts against the state. My own case took three and a half years.

NEW VEHICLES: Some of the huge fleet. FOR some time there has been significant disquiet on the Rock over the number of new cars taking up space in what are supposed to be pub lic car parks near the centre, but the Gibraltar government has struck a £20 million deal to sell space and release central parking. Local firm, the Bassadone Automotive Group has agreed terms for the acquisition of two large areas, with one comprising the entire lower level underground car park and part of the upper level un derground parking at the Lath bury Sports Facility well away from the congested centre. The other is part of the Eu
ropa Business Centre at the Dockyard, adjacent to the new premises being redevel oped by the Bassadone Group to house its new showrooms, offices and warehouses. In addition, the govern ment has been advised by the Bassadone Group that it in tends to relocate part of its in ternational business from Por tugal to the new premises at the Dockyard, thus allowing it to take advantage of secure storage facilities close to its highly specialised workshops. Bassadone currently em ploys 320 staff in Gibraltar and this will increase with the opening of the new facility and transfer of business.
Spanish Uzbek Friendship AN Agreement of Coopera tion for trade and econom ic relations has been en tered into between the Embassy of Uzbekistan and the Madridbased Eurasian Business Alliance. The intention is to pro mote Uzbekistan as a suit able trading partner for Spanish companies and to share information with each other about potential business opportunities in each other’s region. The first area of cooper ation will see an attempt to attract Spanish investors to the implementation of a project for production of functional, dietary and ba by food using European technologies in the Khorezm region.
Waterstones faces problems BRITAIN’S largest high street bookseller Water stones is reportedly due to make a number of redun dancies in its London head office according to the Bookseller periodical. Having climbed out of losses following the 2008 crisis and overcome com petition from Amazon and other online book sellers, the company is now facing challenges caused by the lockdown. It opened its Covent Gar den store in June, but after just a week it has to close a g a i n d u e t o l a c k o f c u s tomers and most of its uni versity sites are still inop erative.
Charging Spain’s green vehicles The project, which will be implemented over the next four years, will make it possi ble to roll out a total of 8,500 charging points for hybrid or electric vehicles. The first 2,000 charging
points will be installed this year on the main motorway network and in Spain’s princi pal urban areas, with the aim of covering 15,000 kilometres to include towns and cities with over 35,000 residents.
This will provide electric ve hicle drivers with charging points every 100 kilometres and charging infrastructure in the country’s main towns and cities. The remainder of the sta
tions will be installed gradually over the next three years until 2023, reaching 8,500 publicly accessible charging points. All of these will be on roads or in public car parks with open ac cess for drivers.

Latest currency news After dropping at the start of July, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has re covered ground over the last couple of weeks, with GBP/EUR moving from 1.09 to 1.11. EUR/GBP has fluctuated between 0.89 and 0.91. GBP/USD, meanwhile, stormed from 1.24 to 1.31 and EUR/USD ral lied from 1.12 to 1.18. What’s been happening? While the Euro has been benefit ing from broadbased weakness in the US dollar, the common currency came under pressure as July drew to a close. New coronavirus worries in Spain
EURO: The common currency came under pressure at the end of July. and the latest Eurozone GDP figures put the euro under pressure, with the German growth data providing particular cause for concern. The German GDP release re vealed a largerthanexpected con traction in the second quarter. The Eurozone’s largest economy also slid in to deflation in July. The Eurozone as a whole suffered a record slump in growth in the sec
ond quarter of 2020. The Pound, on the other hand, has enjoyed a resurgence despite ongoing speculation about the UK leaving the EU without a deal at the end of the year. Sterling’s strength was derived from some endofmonth flows as well as the broad weakness of many of its peers. What do you need to look out
for? Next week one of the biggest cat alysts of movement in the GBP/EUR exchange rate will be the Bank of England’s (BoE) latest policy deci sion. While the Monetary Policy Com mittee (MPC) isn’t expected to make any changes, GBP investors will be keeping a close eye on the bank’s forward guidance. Any clear indication of negative interest rates could dent demand for the pound. Further Sterling movement could be inspired by July’s finalised PMI release. Confirmation that UK busi ness activity soared to a fiveyear high would be poundpositive. The Euro, meanwhile, may also edge higher if the Eurozone’s own final PMI releases for July are up wardly revised. However, the real focus for EUR
investors will be Germany’s latest industrial data. If German factory orders and in dustrial production continued to ex pand at a solid pace in June the Eu ro could recoup losses against the Pound and continue its march high er against the US dollar. It’s extremely precarious
ON the eve of Eid, which is loosely the Muslim equivalent of Christmas, the British government announced they were relocking down selected areas of the UK. It was not rocket science to realise that on closer inspection, these were in the main, parts of the country where the residents were predominately Muslim or ethnic. For regular readers, I don’t need to reiterate a column of many weeks ago, where I reported that a number of these areas were simply ignoring the government warnings and indeed in some cases being told not to worry because this virus ‘could not harm a hair of true believers’ and was merely ‘Allah’s revenge on the Infidels!’ This latest government order ordained that for at least another two weeks those living in these areas would not be allowed to meet up in each other’s homes or gardens. This of course is precisely what is customary during the Eid celebrations. Frankly, to me these instructions were so obviously directed at the Muslim population I thought the government had either finally grown a pair, or were in fact so naïve and knuckle headed they thought

it wouldn’t be noticed. Ha! Some ‘opes. I could actually hear the screams of ‘discrimination’ and ‘racism’ from here. Lo and behold a few hours later, in a hasty move that reeked of total panic, there was another governmental decree. They had now decided to reverse a recent directive in these areas and also re – ban the public from all sporting events, including indoor gyms, dance studios, bowling alleys, water parks, casinos and swim-
ming pools. Weddings would also once again be restricted to 30 people. In other words any establishment that the indigenous locals could have attended for a little social enjoyment were having their imminent opening permissions rescinded - thereby putting everyone in the same miserable boat, which neatly (or clumsily!) sidestepped any accusations of the government singling out any particular section of the population.
In other words, because of the lack of compliance and flouting of the regulations by a few super spreaders, the whole of the local population have been made to suffer, purely to avoid certain sections of the populace feeling picked on or becoming ‘offended.’ To me it’s the weak, capitulatory appeasement of a lily livered government that is actually the most disquieting. It also proves how assured they are that the beleaguered silent majority would be afraid to raise even a peep of discontent. No, the fact is that until we get some truly patriotic strength at the top, the future of the country and culture our ancestors fought to preserve is extremely precarious indeed. As a final word, and although I don’t always agree with many of his right wing views, I also found it disgraceful that last week Tommy Robinson and his family had to flee the country of his birth because his home had suffered an arson attack and they were in fear of their lives. BARRY DUKE BACK in 1981, Thatcher’s Employment Secretary Norman Tebbit - every inch as abhorrent a creature as she was - responded to the then unemployment crisis by suggesting that people get on their bikes and look for work. At that time around 2.5 million were unemployed. After the 1981 riots in Handsworth and Brixton, Tebbit responded to a suggestion that rioting was a natural reaction to unemployment: ‘I grew up in the ‘30s with an unemployed father. He didn’t riot. He got on his bike and looked for work, and he kept looking till he found it.’ So he became known as ‘On yer bike’ Tebbit, a term that - to this very day - clings to the reactionary old fool like dung to a duvet. But now ‘on yer bike’ has - thanks to the bumbling buffoon the UK now
has for a Prime Minister - taken a new twist. Johnson, as part of an attempt to bribe Brits to lead healthier lifestyles, has shaken the Magic Money Tree to finance a £2 billion cycling and walking scheme. This appalls me because I believe folk should take personal responsibility for their lifestyle choices. But tragically nowadays self-control and the exercise of willpower are outmoded concepts. Millions have been conditioned to think that it’s the job of bureaucrats to manipulate every aspect of their lives from cradle to grave. The consequence has been a complete surrender of personal responsibility to a grotesque nanny state. Yet many believe that the government should have even greater power. I almost fell off my chair this week when I saw this headline on the Premier

motions on fattening products and outlawing supermarkets from tempting shoppers with unhealthy snacks at checkouts and store entrances. Maitland-Carew told PCN that the campaign is ‘a good start but it can’t stop there. You have to show them what a healthy way of eating looks like, so perhaps positive ads would be a good replacement.’ If we’ve reached the stage where people - having capitulated to a system that’s all but destroyed independence and respect for one’s self and others - now need to be shown the difference between snacking on raw carrots, celery and the likes, and bloody great bags of crisps, then no amount of public funding will reverse the trend. Mark my words, the war against obesity will prove as futile as the idiotic, multi-trillion pound war on drugs.

WITH many national surveys giving President Donald Trump’s Democratic challenger a double-digit lead, this polarising president’s assault on decency has unified America - across boundaries of race, class and partisan politics - against him. Probably something no American president has ever achieved. Trump has now made more than 20,000 false or misleading claims as president, according to the Washington Post’s Fact Checker tally. It took Trump just 827 days to top 10,000 false and misleading claims, an average of 12 claims a day. What’s more, according to the Post, he averaged fewer than five false

the book is “made up of lies and fake stories.” But shortly after the decision, he alleged on Twitter that John Bolton “broke the law by releasing Classified Information (in massive amounts).” Problem is, if the book is nothing but fiction, how can any of the information in it be ‘Classified’? Next, we have a tell-all memoir by President Donald Trump’s niece who describes her uncle as a fraud and bully, a “narcissist” who now allegedly “threatens the life of every American.” And more bad news. A yet-to-be-published, tell-all book by Trump’s exlawyer Michael Cohen will reportedly provide

World we live in is a strange place MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I DON’T like the new normal and, as many of my friends will tell you, I wasn’t that partial to the old normal! If I want to go out to eat I am now being served by a sweaty person in a mask which is sometimes over the nose and sometimes isn’t. The chef is sweating like a ….... fill in your own offensive, politically incorrect remark here. I left one place as sweat was obviously dripping onto the food he was preparing. It’s 40 degrees. He has a hat and mask and goggles on. Not entirely his fault but I’ll use the salt sachet on the table for seasoning if it’s ok with you. Then there seems to be a bit of an attitude problem around too. I ordered the bill in one place and got it pretty quick but waited nearly 15 minutes for change. It was way over the tipping amount so I wasn’t going to leave it. Finally I went over and asked why it was taking so long and was told in no uncertain terms that the waiter was serving on his own and
the other six staff there couldn’t use the till. No sorry - just the usual ‘if there weren’t so many customers trying to get served I could get on with my job’ attitude. Another question is who do I listen to about this Covid stuff? Do I listen to the doctors and scientists that have spent years studying for degrees in epidemiology and then years working in laboratories and hospitals doing research on every infectious disease known to mankind and treating patients with the most terrible illnesses? Or do I listen to the conspiracy theorists whose uncle’s brother’s sister’s aunt has it on very good authority that, according to someone they know, who has read loads of stuff on the internet, social media and the rantings of Trump’s new guru Dr Stella Immanuel or Katie Hopkins, that we are just being fooled by the Illuminati to let them inject us with a tracking device? I’m still sticking with the experts. You, of course, can do as you wish. The world we now live in is a very strange place. For instance, if you are driving down the road and see a magnificent tree you don’t stop and admire it. But if there is a terrible car crash you slow down to see what’s happening. Social media is a car crash.

ON Friday, July 31, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced his intention to ban the Chinese social network TikTok in the country, which Washington views with suspicion for reasons of national security. For those who don’t know what TikTok is, it is a social networking app that mostly shows short videos of children and many celebrities lip synching to songs or creating some actually pretty good dance moves. It is developed by ByteDance, based in Beijing and has achieved great success among the public, but at the same time it is claimed to have raised great doubts about the security of user’s data and links with the Chinese Communist Party. Tension between the US and China has increased in recent months fuelled by the Covid pandemic, for which the two countries blame each other. “As for TikTok, we are going to ban it in the United States,” Trump said in remarks to reporters, and added, “I have that authority. I can do it with an executive order.” Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted that the Trump administration was considering restricting access to TikTok in the States given the possibility that Beijing is using the social network as a means to monitor and distribute propaganda. After an hour of trying the app this writer saw no evidence of any propaganda, but quite a lot of funny pranks and families coming enjoying using it together. Surely this is just another example of Trump’s huffy baby rouine? TikTok general manager in the United States, Vanessa Pappas, warned on Saturday that the Chinese network has no plans “to go anywhere,” in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement to veto it. Pappas stated in her message that they are proud of the 1,500 workers they have in the USA and that they will create another 10,000 jobs over the next three years. “We don’t plan to go anywhere. TikTok is home to creators and artists to express their ideas and connect with people from different backgrounds. We are proud of everyone who calls TikTok home.”

Monday to Friday there is no need to set our alarms since at 8am the leaf blower begins his assault on our ears and by the time he has blown the leaves etc from one end of the street to the other, we are fully awake. Maybe they are proud to announce noisily that they are working, but like thousands of others living here in peaceful retirement, I am not amused. Gone are the days of the brush and dustpan operator quietly cleaning the street, while we gradually wake up to the sound of birdsong. Now, where did I put my earplugs! As I put my purchases on the belt, the family behind me, (French, two adults and two teenagers, the lads both had their masks around their neck!), started to put their purchases on the belt just behind mine. I put up my hand and gestured to the distance lines on the floor, to which they just looked and carried on loading up the belt. I pointed again, and then the cashier also told them to stop and pointed to the floor to bring to their attention the warnings, they still carried on! She then left the till and walked round to them and pulled back the trolley to the line. No surprise Dear Euro Weekly, It’s not surprising that there is a large reduction in the number of people visiting Spain for a holiday from the UK. Regulations and government advice at both ends are confusing, restrictive and seemingly frequently changing, so we don’t know whether it’s advisable to go to Spain, what restrictions we will find, whether or not there are lockdowns if there are quarantines at either end, whether hotels are open when we arrive, etc, etc. Who would want to go on holiday when such confusion and concern exists? I knew I had to do something as I was slowly pushing away everyone I loved and I was about to lose it all. So how exactly do you quieten the noise? Can you set yourself free from a negative mindset? But the question is, why? Our ego (or as I like to name her, the witch), feeds off self-doubt and fear. She can be a residue of childhood experiences - automatic patterns of neural firing stored in our brains and dissociated from the memory of the events they are trying to protect us from. If you try to ignore the voice or even dismiss it altogether, It can take charge of your whole life, enabling you to become a slave to the mind. This, in turn, will allow you to believe that the outside world is dangerous and that you need to obey her rules for living in order to survive and avoid pain. You will live your life existing rather than living! So how can you quieten the noise? Step 1 - I would like you to look at your end goal. What is it you would like to achieve? Think of your current goal, your dream. What does it look like?
Where are you when you achieve this goal? Who is the first person to share it with? Now take a moment to align with this next question. How does it feel to achieve your goal? Feel every emotion possible for the next minute. How do you feel? You’re smiling, right? You know what it feels like to reach your goal. You can see your success and know what it feels like. You can feel what it can do for you and your families life? 321... The ego has started. Am I right? Just as you picture everything you want to achieve, that is when she starts! Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. Step 2 - Acknowledge and understand your thoughts Write down everything, word for word that your ego/witch, is telling you. It is important to be completely honest here. You need to
share EXACTLY what the voice is telling you. Next to each statement, write the following, what physical evidence do I have that makes this thought true? The answer to be ZERO! There is no physical evidence to stop you from being successful. The only evidence you have is FEAR. Fear of failing, fear of judgement, fear of other people’s opinions, fear from past experiences. It is time to face those fears... Name one step you can take today that will bring you closer to your goal. Don’t think of the outcome. Ignore the ‘what if.’ Just give me one step, right now, without thinking about it. What can you do today that will get you closer to your goal? THOSE who have followed my articles will know I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was 21 years old. This is what I’ve learnt, over nearly nine years of trying to manage a mental illness alongside a job. • ‘I have,’ not ‘I am’ When I was first diagnosed with bipolar, it became my life. There is so much more to me than my diagnosis. • Shame can make logical people seem irrational There is still so much stigma about mental illness. If you feel like part of who you are will lead to work colleagues assuming you’re not capable of doing your job, you keep it private. With the right support you can thrive at anything. Honesty is the best policy! • Managing anxiety and stress is like a second job Sometimes, I feel like I have two fulltime jobs. The one I’m paid for, and the one I do to manage my mental health. My brain has taken on the job of an anti-virus software package, monitoring my stress levels and making sure they don’t reach a critical stage. It means I don’t have to worry about getting so stressed that I might end up in the early stages of mania. Selfcare is so important. • Kindness and em-
pathy: YES. Pity: HECK , NO. The best managers I’ve had have had the following qualities: good listeners, prepared to see the best in people and encouraging. Doesn’t sound too much to ask, does it? For most people, a bad manager doesn’t affect their health. Yet if I don’t get the right support, I struggle to do a good job. What no-one wants is pity, because that’s crushing. Mental illness can crush someone’s self-esteem. There have been times when I felt I was being handled as if I was an unexploded bomb that might go off at any moment. That can lead to a vicious cycle of low expectation equalling poor performance. Being a good boss means being able to have difficult conversations. I’d far rather a boss/manager found a tactful way to be honest with negative feedback than shied away from confrontation. • Talking about it helps Reluctance to talk about our feelings is famous nowadays. People are scared to show any sort of emotion. But how we feel has a huge bearing on our output and work performance. Otherwise, psychologists who coach top athletes would be out of a job. Just being about to talk about mental health at work and it not be a big deal is a huge release. Because the more we talk about it, the less of a big deal it becomes. SUZANNE MANNERS YES I know Spain is hot and yes I know it is summer... but really... so soon. Is it me or is it hotter this year? A tad sweatier perhaps? Maybe my post menopausal body is finding it harder to adapt and my ability to control my own temperature is abating (although why I expect to be able to control anything in 2020 is a joke). I dutifully swim in the olympic sized public pool three times a week emerging from the chlorinated water sanctified and self congratulatory with aching muscles and a holier than thou strut from pool to shower (actually more of a stiff lope). Momentarily refreshed and when I say momentarily I mean mere nano seconds of refreshment before the sweat returns. My state of being since menopause jumped up and licked me all over my face with its liverish tongue has been characterised by dampness... and

SELF-PORTRAIT: It frightened even me! heat... heat that begins in the centre of the earth and emerges like a geyser from the top of my
head emitting not only steam, but rage and quick tears and the occasional foray into online shop-
ping for Desigual bags and Lalique jewellery, none of which I can comfortably afford. Due to financial constraints and the loss of my job the online shopping has been relegated like an overpaid footballer to the nether regions of my life...a place full of bad choices and unfortunate clothing. However the other symptoms of later womanhood stick around like an unwanted suitor (minus the flowers and bad sex) jumping out at me in moments of weakness. The unbound rage is a difficult one, especially when caused by nothing more than an odd shaped egg or a not quite cold glass of Cava. I have tried to be analytical about it, to explore the reason behind the rage and the extreme reaction created (which due to my overriding politeness mostly consists of a range of facial contortions and hands clamped over my mouth) but then the ‘Who gives a flying…’ symptom races in to save the day. Mostly the people around me tend not to notice (luckily or they
would not be around me much longer) but then most post menopausal women suffer from the least researched symptom, the sudden and dramatic invisibility that pops up and nestles in on your 50th birthday... so in fact nobody notices anyway... job done. At the height of my hot flushes I would dash out of shops, my face a glowing beacon lighting up the surrounding area, muttering nonsensical phrases and trying bravely to mop up the sweat, along with my eyebrows, which I still find difficult to keep on my face. The search for waterproof make-up has reached the stage of alchemy worthy of the keenest Necromancer. My bathroom is like a Hogwarts’ potion lab and my face a shining Picasso with shades of Dali. This heat serves to revive dormant symptoms. The menopause is like Pennywise the clown, once destroyed it continues to lurk inside the storm drain of the over-50 woman’s thickening but invisible body like a middle aged psychopath. Toodle pip!

Who Let the Dogs Out? GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY A S t h e s u m m e r t e m p e r a t u re s soar, so too does my desire to run further each day. I’m staying around the 16km mark, and having to rise earlier each day, to do so. If someone wonders if global warming is a myth, come live in Spain and find out. This year is considerably hotter than last. Out by 6.30am, and bored of my usual run along the beach, I decided to mix things up. Up hill to be exact, into the mountains, of Los Altos de Los Monteros. While the terrain is almost vertical, I find it exhilarating, if not hard going. You know what they say, no pain, no gain. As temperatures tip 30ºC by 7am, if I was to require a sponsor for my routine, it would have to be San Pellegrino. The views from up high are fantastic, and somewhat uninterrupted. Somewhat, until you realise you’re being chased by a pack of crazed guard dogs. While the saying goes - dog is man’s best friend, the dogs that escaped from a vast hillside villa, were clearly not interested in being my friend. Over the thumping sounds of Run DMC, I heard them get closer and felt them on my heels. Pretty much like the beginning of The Italian Job, either side of the road, met with a sheer drop, I had little choice, other than to turn and face their snarling faces. Growing up in a house where dogs were as important, if not more so, than most people, I’m very used to handling even the angriest. As we all know, the worst thing to show any potential enem y , i s f e a r. F r o m d e e p w i t h i n , I shouted so loudly, I’m sure the fishermen in Morocco could hear. The dogs stopped in their tracks. I stood still, and without hesitation commanded that they back off. Slowly, but surely, they calmed and became almost fear ful. I stood in the middle of the road, nervous, but in control. Well, until a Swiss registered Mercedes G-wag-
A DOG: Is known as man’s best friend. on almost killed all of us, as it ploughed downhill at F1 speed. Luckily the speeding jeep was just the trick I needed to make a serious run for it. Not stopping until I was safely home. As the afternoon rolled on, I decided I couldn’t allow these dogs to roam freely. What if I wasn’t so lucky? What if they attacked a young child, or caused a car crash. I went to the Local Police, who shook their heads and explained it was more likely a matter for SATE in Puerto Banús. All I wanted to do was send a simple message to the owners of the villa, regarding the situation. Why is everything here always so complicated? By now, temperatures were higher and Banús is a place I avoid at all costs, especially post midday. So, instead I returned home and had a swim. That evening as I played ball with my ever happy Jack Russell, Henry, I realised that just like people, not all dogs are kind. However, when faced with angry, or negative people, we have two choices - allow them to take power, or stand tall and take the power back. If that fails, run. Run for your life.

Closed borders and residencia, a Bridge under Troubled Waters CONSULAR MATTERS AS consul for Denmark and a lawyer on the coast, I have come across an important issue for EU citizens living here in Spain. As an EU citizen, you are o f c o u r s e f re e t o t r a v e l without restriction and this has always been the case. However, I apologise in advance as I am going to mention Brexit and the coronavirus in this article. The problem that occurred during the Coronavirus lockdown was that Spain closed its borders and people who weren’t Spanish citizens, residents, or cross border workers weren’t allowed to travel to Spain, of course, these people
had previously enjoyed the right to move freely throughout the European Union. Rightly or wrongly a number of citizens of Denmark and the United Kingdom amongst others had been living in Spain without being residents here. This meant that they were effectively blocked from returning to their permanent home in Spain if they happened to be in another country when the lockdown was announced. Had they been residents in Spain, or had their residencia then this would not have been a problem as they would have been allowed to return. Spain did have a very harsh lockdown so they would have had their movements massively restricted on their return. In the news, some EU countries and the British government
NO ENTRY: Borders were closed during lockdown. has announced that anyone returning from Spain has to undergo a 14 day quarantine period. In addition, a number of flights have been cancelled. Well, there is nothing that can be done to avoid the travel restrictions, but to avoid being effectively stuck in one country being unable to return to Spain I would advise everyone who is living here in Spain to apply for residencia. Remember to note that if you
stay for more than 183 days in Spain you become a tax resident. We have helped a number of citizens and clients with residencia. I would advise that you are very careful with people calling themselves advisors or consultants as they may not be a qualified gestor or a lawyer. As Consul I recommend you instruct a qualified professional. Now lastly Brexit, well the United Kingdom has left the EU
and the transition period will end on December 31, 2020. If you have a holiday home here in Spain there is nothing to worry about as long as you are happy spending 90 days or less in Spain in 180 days. If you live here you need to apply for residencia or residency. If you are British you can still apply for residency next year but the requirements will be more onerous. So if you are already living here you should apply for residency if you haven’t already and if you are in a position to move before the end of 2020 please do so. Remember you can rent or buy a property. Please be aware of unscrupulous people involved in renting and sales and always take advice from an independent lawyer regarding a lease or a property purchase.

Simply being yourself. To understand how important, you are is to firstly know how unique you are. Scientists tell us that the odds of you being born as you, are around one in 400 trillion. There is not another person on earth like you, adding significance to your very existence, there is only one of you out of 7.8 billion people living today.!! Many of us look up to others
even try to emulate them. It is not a bad thing to follow the good examples but to actually try and be anyone different to who you are will only result in you feeling and being second best. Be your own individual self! You can only act like the person you conceive yourself to be, so hold your head up high, understand that to be you is nothing short of a miracle. The importance of being you is fuelled by being ‘true to yourself’ and therefore being at ease with yourself. Try not to hold on to what others think of you, this will just inhibit and hold you back from being the genuine you. Make the choice to let go. Spend less time doing and more time being, take time out to really appreciate who you really are, start being who you really want to be. If you feel there are any changes to be made, make them. This is not only empowering and liberating, but can transform you, enabling you to be become less influ-
enced by the actions of others to become more influential. Understanding that you are important and stepping into this new powerful role can really make a difference to those around you. A simple smile, a compliment even an act of kindness, could completely change a person’s day or even their life, so why not be that person to influence others. Your importance to others counts, it extends to everything you do which becomes a reflection of who you are. It’s not important to be better than anyone else but to progress and become a better version of yourself each and every day. The more important you feel, the more credible you feel, so put it to good use. You matter more than you think! I USED to live on the island o f Te n e r i f e . I l o v e d t h e place. I had homes in both the north and south of the i s l a n d . M o u n t Te i d e , t h e highest peak in Spain, dominates the island. I could s e e i t f ro m m y b e d ro o m window when I lived in the town of La Orotava. The island was formed from volcanic eruptions over history. Everyone who lives in Tenerife knows that the volcano is only dormant. It could go off and lose its head at any moment although it would probably be a minor eruption. The last time it had a blast was in 1909 and one person died because they got too close to the fumes. Mount Vesuvius in Italy is a completely different story. This

peii and Herculaneum. These days, Pompeii is still being excavated and it is a major tourist attraction. This does not mean that the area is safe. Vesuvius could erupt at any time but it doesn’t stop the lo-
cal people from continuing their lives there. I feel that there are similarities to the Covid-19 virus scare that we are going through. It has happened and it has killed people but we are still carrying
on with our lives. It has destroyed families but there are many who carry on living their lives under the possible threat that it may return. I personally feel that we have to carry on. We have to move forward. It is too easy to shrink away and hide. That is not living. Living is enjoying life. Truly enjoying life is living life to the full. I completely understand that there are a number of folks who are too scared to go back to their normal routines. I also know that a great deal of a fair amount of people are feeling vulnerable. They may have medical issues that make them an easy target for the virus. Whatever issues we have to take into account on a personal level we must also not lose sight of the fact that we have to live our lives as though every day were our last. It is far too easy to forget that. So, it’s masks on and out we go and let’s see what another beautiful day brings our way!

T h e F i e s t a h a s been a familiar site on our roads for decades and with a myriad of body, trim and engine options, it truly does o ff e r s o m e t h i n g f o r everyone. The halo model has to be the ST with its hardcore sporting looks, racy interior and an engine note to match. Classic fast Fords have been in the ascendancy for some years and with new fast Fords like the Fiesta ST it’s not hard to see why. Range prices start from €13,051 (£16,640) for the lead-in Trend model and my sporting ST model is offered in two trims simply named ST-1 and ST-2

Ford Fiesta ST priced at €24,499 (£21,775) and €26,753 (£24,325) respectively. Both versions are mechanically identical and only the standard equipment level differentiates the two models. Power comes from a three-cylinder 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine that develops 200 CV/HP and propels the car from 0 to 100 kmh (62 mph) in 6.5 seconds, yet 7L/100km in combined driving shows just how useable the ST is in daily commuting. Standard fare includes

FOOTBALL: Arsenal beat London rivals Chelsea to win the FA Cup! ARSENAL beat London rivals Chelsea to win the FA Cup inside an almost empty Wembley on Saturday afternoon. Mikel Arteta’s side came from behind to win 2-1 in a game that rounds off a domestic season like no other. Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice after Christian Pulisic had put Frank Lampard’s men in front. Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic was sent off after what proved to be Arsenal’s winner for two bookable offences. Arsenal’s tally of FA Cup wins now stands at 14 - more than any other English club. Aubameyang went on to lift the famous trophy - but not before dropping it. It is their fourth FA Cup in seven seasons. Arteta has now won the competition as both Arsenal captain and

Second was Alan Lowans with 38 points followed by Ros Fletcher and George Braddick both on 37 points. Ros also won nearest the pin in
two on the 18th, unfortunately as no one managed the 2nd in two shots but luckily for him, Keith Cottrell won a card draw. Gordon’s son Nick, and Shane Fitzsimmons were welcomed as guests and Nick took the best guest prize with 31 points. This competition always looks for the best dressed Yorkshire man with the prize going to a very smart Geoff Willcock in his flat cap and wearing a white Yorkshire rose. Next week’s competition is a stableford sponsored by Robin Thatcher.
