THE Área Sanitaria Este MalagaAxarquia are to carry out the campaign ‘Verano Saludable en la Axarquia,’ with the objective of informing the population about health care in the summer. The campaign will last until August 15 and will let people know about the importance of sun protection, hydration, photosensitivity of some medicines, care against heat and prevention of accidents in places of bathing and leisure, among other subjects. The activities, adapting to the preventive measures against Covid-19, will be carried out through the use of different communication channels, such as social networks and videos, and with the participation of experts on the subject: health care professionals, promoters of good health and professionals from other sectors, who will contribute their experience to allow everybody to enjoy a summer in the healthiest way. Throughout the summer period, the campaign messages will be broadcast across different media.
THE new normal is beginning to take shape on Spain’s Costa del Sol. While not yet on a full international level, tourists are returning to resorts in the region, and the high streets, beaches, bars and restaurants are busier, though health and safety remains a priority. And on a hugely positive note, two thirds of Malaga Province workers placed on temporary employment regulation (ERTE) due to the coronavirus pandemic have already returned to their jobs. CAMPAIGN: Informing the population about health care in the summer. The campaign has arrived just in time as the province leads the highest temperatures recorded in Andalucia and even at a national level.

provinces, including Malaga and said it has chosen to accelerate the investments planned this year ‘to contribute to the economic recovery.’ To help things along the way closer to home, the Spanish government and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) have come to a decision concerning the handing over of financial surpluses. Effectively, the agreement means that the National Treasury will be borrowing for 10 years, 65 per cent of all municipality money held by way of savings, but it will allow the towns and cities to keep 35 per cent towards Covid-19 recovery.
Specifically, it was in Velez-Malaga where thermometers reached 45.6 degrees after three in the afternoon. There is also the ‘Plan for the Prevention of the Effects of Excessive Temperatures on Health’ that the Ministry of Health offers each year with general advice on the high summer temperatures in our Axarquia. This plan continues until September 15 and is aimed especially at the most vulnerable population, such as those over 65 years of age, those with chronic health conditions, people with a severe mental disorder, children under four years of age and people who work or carry out physical activities exposed to the sun. COUNCILLOR for the Elderly of Nerja, Elena Gálvez, and the councillor for Transport, Francis Arce, has announced that free bus vouchers are now available for people over 65 and for children under the age of 12 years, from the Oficina de Mayores located in front of the town hall. THE person in charge of the Amigos del Mar Costa Tropical Association, Anne Zipse, has presented a campaign “to make the Cerro Gordo Natural Area known to local people and visitors, the species, and above all, the rules for responsible use of this protected area,” stated Anne Zipse. The campaign is called ‘Info-Bici del Mar’ and is a “mobile information booth, run by volunteers from the Amigos del Mar Association from now on and during the summer season on the La Herradura promenade,”
said the head of Amigos del Sea. The Info-Bici del Mar campaign is a free service, to be provided in Spanish and English. From the Amigos del Mar Association, “we are aware that the more you know a place, the more you like it, the more you like it, the more you want to protect it. Safety limits MOTRIL Town Hall has decided to limit the capacity of all municipally owned spaces, facilities and buildings, both interior and exterior, intended for leisure, culture, sports, shows, meetings, conferences or any other type of social event to two thirds of the allowed and, in any case, never more than 250 people. The decision has been taken in view of the outbreaks and infections that have occurred after the State of Alarm and the different phases of de-escalation. Among the measures adopted by the local Executive, the Provincial Health Delegation of the Andalucian Government in Granada was officially requested to double the number of trackers destined for Motril and the south health district in order to establish traceability of infections and prevent new infections. The local government also issued the appropriate instructions to the Local Police to intensify control and surveillance measures to control the closing times of the terraces and compliance with the capacity of the terraces and nightlife venues, as well as the correct use of masks. The measures adopted also affect the Municipal Residence for the Elderly of San Luis, where family visits have been restricted.

VEHICLES: New tools that allow for more effective work to man pedestrian areas. VELEZ-MALAGA Town Hall has presented the incorporation of four segway vehicles for the Local Police, with the aim of equipping them with new tools that allow for more effective work to man pedestrian areas.
Velez-Malaga mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, presented these vehicles which will be used for two and a half months on a rental basis to test their effectiveness. They will be used in the centre of VelezMalaga and on the promenade of
Caleta de Vélez and Torre del Mar. The officers using these vehicles have received a training course on them. The segways hold six hours of battery, and thanks to their lightness and tyres they are suitable to be used on the beach.

Alzheimer’s aid THE plenary session of Rincón de la Victoria Town Hall has approved the proposal by the Department of Social Welfare and the Association of Alzheimer’s Caregivers and Patients (Asalbez) to urge the government to accelerate the implementation of the Plan Nacional de Alzheimer y otras demencias 20192023. Councillor for Social Welfare, Elena Aguilar, maintains a direct collaboration with Asalbez through periodic meetings to establish and develop lines of communication to improve the service and quality of life of its users and relatives. The Association of Relatives and Patients with Alzheimer’s Bezmiliana offer information and guidance as well as holding workshops aimed at slowing down the progression of the disease. They have cognitive, behavioural and sensory workshops from Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm.

Moto madness RESIDENTS of an area of Torre del Mar have complained that its streets have become an illegal racing circuit for months. The residents have affir med that “there are a series of cars and especially motorcycles, this happens every day and almost at any time. We do not under-
stand how a residential area can be used as racing circuits.” This area is on the o u t s k i r t s o f To r r e d e l Mar, its streets are wide and there is not a lot of traffic. Residents report that excessive noise, loud exhausts, and illegal racing occur almost d a i l y . T h e r e f o r e , t h e y believe that putting
speed bumps in the area would be a solution. “If they placed speed bumps before the zebra crossings, these bikers would not be able to run and therefore there would not be as much noise.” These facts have been brought to the attention of the Local Police, so far there has been no solution.

THE beaches of Calabajío, El Pozuelo and the western area of San Cristóbal beach in Almuñecar, and La Playita, next to Punta de la Mona, were recorded as completely full by noon last Sunday, August 2, as access was regulated, according to Security councillor Francisco Robles Rivas. The good weather encouraged
thousands of people to move to the beaches of Almuñecar and La Herradura this first weekend of August. These are the areas that first completed the capacity allowed to try to guarantee the distancing measures required by Covid. In the aforementioned beaches and areas, the auxiliaries were forced to divert bathers to other larger beaches.

BAD BEHAVIOUR: Motril Local Police gave out 37 sanctions. THE Motril Local Police have followed the instructions issued by the local government team of the town hall to curb any behaviour that may pose a risk of increased infections by coronavirus in the town. The local government already warned on Saturday that control and surveillance measures would be intensified to avoid drinking on public roads, control the closing times of the terraces and compliance with the capacity of the terraces and leisure venues at night, as well as the correct use of masks in open and closed spaces. The police investigation has resulted in a total of 37 sanctions on residents for breaching the obligation to wear a mask. Among the premises for which a sanction is proposed, nine have been denounced for failing to comply with the closing hours, six for an excessive occupation of the public thoroughfare by the terraces, one for not having the required occupation licence for the terrace and another one for performing a concert, an activity that did not have a permit nor can be carried out at the current health time.

British Red Cross IT was in 1859 that Swiss philanthropist Henry Dunant saw for himself the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in Italy and decided that he had to do something to relieve the suffering that soldiers and civilians had to cope with. In 1863 he founded the Red Cross Society and in 1864 his ideas were incorporated into the Geneva Convention which still survives to the present day. The year 2020 sees the 150th anniversary of the British Red Cross which was created following the brutality of the Franco Prussian War and it became a society under Royal Charter in 1908 and continues to be closely connected with the Royal Family as the Queen is Patron and Prince Charles President. Nowadays it is not so involved with the armed forces (although the Ministry of Defence owns the rights to the actual Red Cross), but is involved in assisting all of those in need in both the UK and across the world.

T H E p o l i c e a re c u r re n t l y o n t h e hunt for a Belgian couple who were meant to take a PCR test to determine whether they suffered from the coronavirus or not. The Belgian couple were expected to show up at the Barbanza Hospital in A Coruña, in Galicia, however, they failed to show up and now the police are on the hunt to track them down. Last Sunday, several medical sources
confirmed that the leaders of the health centre informed the police that the Belgian couple had not arrived for their scheduled testing. Therefore, the matter has now fallen into the authorities’ hands and will be considered as a crime against public health. The officers are now working tirelessly as they attempt to track them down, as there is a likely chance that they could both be infected with the coronavirus.
A HEARTLESS mother in Spain’s Toledo has been arrested for leaving her two-yearold locked in a car during the suffocating heatwave experienced over recent days. A neighbour in the capital of Castilla-La
Mancha saw how the mother left her twoyear-old inside the vehicle in direct sunlight during 40-degree weather with the windows closed. Thanks to a nearby witness and their call to the 092 emergency services, the boy was
rescued from the vehicle. The Local Police had to break the car windows to rescue the minor who suffered from dehydration. The woman was arrested for leaving her two-year-old locked in a car and abandoning a minor.

WORK being carried out in several streets located in the heart of the San Miguel neighbourhood of Almuñecar has exposed a large Roman wall that is thought to have been from the first centur y. In addition to showing the original layout of the Roman town, it demonstrates how the current houses of the old town of the aforementioned were built on top of these ancient structures, serving as foundations, as reported by the municipal archaeologist, Eva Ilurquieta The wall, which is located on Calle San Miguel Alto, between Plaza Eras del Castillo and Calle San Miguel, is about 14 metres long and serves as a foundation for a building. In addition, luxurious Roman pottery called terra sigillata has been discovered. “For now, the finding has been documented and incorporated into yet another chapter in the rich history of the ancient city of Almuñecar,” said Eva Ilurquieta, who is closely monitoring the work.

THE Court of First Instance and Instruction number 1 of Torrox has issued an order for the opening of a trial against the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo and his councillor for Urbanismo y Vivienda, Mari Nieves Atencia as well as against seven businessmen in the construction sector for the case of the illegal landfill of the Río de la Miel, which operated irregularly between June 1998 and September 2016. The prosecutor last February requested a sentence of two
years in prison and 18 months of disqualification for the Nerja councillor for these events. The same sentence is requested by the Public Ministry for the councillor for Urbanismo y Vivienda, as well as for the seven entrepreneurs in the construction sector of the easternmost town in the province who will sit in the dock of a Criminal Court of the Malaga capital in the coming months. For the councillors, the prosecutor asks for a fine of €7,300 and for employers of €18,250.
Job training THE Deputy Mayor and Delegate for Employment and Training, Beatriz González, has launched a course on ‘Limpieza de superfi-
cies y desinfección de espacios abiertos’ in Almuñecar. The course, in which 17 students can participate, is aimed at un-
employed people belonging to groups such as: long-term unemployed people, young people under 30, people over 55, people with disabilities, immigrants, people belonging to minorities, victims of gender violence, other disadvantaged groups or people in vulnerable situations accredited by a report from Servicios Sociales. The new training proposal, which lasts 425 hours and runs until December in the Aula Municipal de Formación, is held from Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm. Once completed, students will be able to obtain a scholarship, while they will be able to carry out professional practices in companies.

Although the UK voted to leave Europe over four years ago now, there is still a great deal of uncertainty as to how and when this will officially happen. In an attempt to avoid the negative consequences of the UK leaving the EU, many Brits have started to take matters into their own hands and migrate to other European countries. Data from OECD, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and development, shows that from 2016 to 2018, a total of 73,642 people migrated from Britain to EU states. This is much more than the 56,832 people who migrated from the years 2008 to 2015. Brits have not only chosen to migrate, but they have also chosen to take on citizen-

UK nationals living in Spain will receive information about specific actions they need to take to keep their rights and access to services in Spain, including around residency, healthcare, driving licences and passports. The campaign will use multiple channels including Facebook, digital media and newspaper and radio advertising - in urging people to take necessary action to protect their rights so that they can continue living, working and travelling in Europe after the transition period. This builds on the work the British Embassy and Consulates have already been doing to support UK Nationals in Spain. Hugh Elliott, British Ambassador to Spain is one of several British Ambassadors from across Europe, who is featured in a video encouraging UK nationals to take action which can be found here. UK Nationals Support Fund Following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, three organisations in Spain have received funding to provide practical support to at-risk UK nationals to complete their residency applications in Spain and secure their rights under the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement. Age in Spain, Babelia and Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (IOM) are each receiving government funding to support those who need additional help to complete the paperwork required for residency applications. This may include pensioners, people with disabilities, those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language translation or interpretation.
British Ambassador Hugh Elliott welcomed the initiative: “Supporting UK nationals is one of our highest priorities and the assistance available through this fund builds on the support that we are already providing at the British Embassy and through our network of consulates. We are delighted that this project will help the most vulnerable UK nationals get the support they need to protect their residency rights and continue to live safely here in Spain. “UK nationals should visit our Living in Guides on gov.uk where they can find more information on the steps they need to take and how to access support.” This project is funded by the UK Government as part of the UK National Support Fund (UKNSF), which has made available a total of £3 million for charities and organisations to provide practical support for UK nationals living in the EU. Residents in countries including Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy and Poland will also benefit. The services available for people who need this additional support include: • answering questions about residency applications, such as the documents required and application procedure • guiding individuals through the process, if necessary • supporting people facing language barriers or difficulty accessing technology IOM will cover Andalucia, Madrid and Murcia, Babelia will cover Alicante, and Age in Spain will cover Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. There will also be information provided through the organisations’ websites and helplines, which will be available for people across Spain. LAST Friday, July 31, Pedro Sanchez had a meeting with the 17 Presidents from the Autonomous Regions at the 21st Conference of Regional Presidents which concentrated on the management of res o u rc e s c o v e re d b y t h e European Recovery Fund, and on the Covid-19 health crisis. Many presidents asked for common actions to be taken regarding Covid health and safety as currently there is no coordination or unification between regions which can be confusing for both residents and those travelling into different areas. As soon as Spain entered the ‘New Normality’ the central government ceded all the competencies back to the Autonomous Regions. H o w e v e r, a s s e e n t h e s e days if you happen to travel

around Spain you must know the details which each region has decreed concerning Covid health and safety measures. H o w e v e r, w e f i n d o u r selves with 17 different systems. Unfortunately, the virus, like the general public, doesn’t understand these differences.
If we also add the factor that the 17 presidents are making statements which are confusing and creating sensationalist headlines and general misleading news on social media platforms, there is a much larger problem. Overall there was no consensus with the Health and

In this case therefore never a truer phrase has been uttered and those who have misappropriated it would be more believable if they came up with their own tag line.

Safety measures. On the other hand, Mr Sanchez did state that the Central government would handle the recovery fund that was coming from Europe, in this case, the 17 presidents were keen to handle their own budgets. Just like the budget from Europe, it would be logical
to think that the central gover nment coordinated the so-called ‘New Normality’ until we are back to the old normal. Considering that, it would be much easier for the general public to understand. At the plenary session of the conference, Sánchez stated that an Inter-ministerial Committee will be set up chaired by the President of the Government. He also specified that a Recovery Fund Monitoring Unit will be set up at the Office of the Presidency of the Government and a high-level group will structure public-private collaboration. The Minister for the Treasury will head up the sector conference with the regional governments and cities, to establish multi-tier collaboration. Local authorities will also be able to take part in this governance process.

UK House Prices Jump ONE of Britain’s largest mortgage lenders Nationwide has reported that house prices in the UK saw their biggest jump in 11 years. On average prices across the country have risen by 1.7 per cent in July which was far higher than economists in a Reuters poll had anticipated. To support this, the Bank of England revealed that mortgage approvals had quadrupled during June as compared to the previous month, although this was still lower than in previous years but the signs were promising.
Home Delivery CHINESE owned UnionPay International, said to have the world’s largest customer base, has entered into an agreement with Barcelona delivery group Glovo. Founded in 2015 and operating in 22 countries, Glovo is a fast delivery company specialising in take-away food and now UnionPay International customers in Spain and Portugal can use their cards through the Glovo App. With no delivery fees until August 15, the card is used widely by Asian students in Europe and is beginning to attract a number of Spanish based consumers.

Spanish Economy in Recession WHILST analyst and government economists expected that Spain would suffer serious economic problems in the first half of 2020, many have been surprised at the size of the drop in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE) has released infor mation showing that the actual fall in the second quarter of the year was 18.5 per cent, much greater than the forecast 16.6 per cent which was in itself worrying. When you consider the incredi ble way in which the Spanish econ
omy had grown for 24 consecutive quarters and was approaching its situation prior to the 2008 eco nomic crisis, this is not good news. Looking forward and taking into account the first two quarters re sults, the end of 2020 sees a 22 per cent drop and Spain is entering in to the deepest recession it has known. There was some hope of a tourist recovery when Britain opened the ‘safe corridor’ but the imposition shortly after of the need to selfquarantine when re turning to the UK from Spain has

seriously affected the situation. Certainly, holidaymakers and second home owners from other parts of Europe are visiting the country, but the British do repre sent the largest percentage of visi tors and therefore any recovery will be marred by the nonappear ance. One area of good news is that whilst acknowledging that 2020 will have to be something of a write off economically, the Span ish government will receive grants from the European Union and be lieves that 2021 will see the return to economic growth.

Can he fight tax agency? Since 2015 I have kept a file on the UKSpain tax treaty of 2013 and the controversy about declara tions of civil service pensions, whether from June 12, 2014, or January 1, 2015. Which is it? Now I have been hit with a penalty of €2,180 for allegedly NOT declaring my public service pension for 2014. Given that I only received £7,000 in that period it seems extraordinary. The appeal to Ha cienda is exhausting and has been going on since Novem ber 2019. David’s answer to an earlier enquiry omits the possibility of invoking Article 25, which HMRC has recom mended. My income is the Public Service pension and UK state pension, the same income as in 2014. For 2019 they refunded me €5.60! They continue to deduct the penalty amount monthly from my bank account. I B (Costa del Sol) The tax agency fi YOU AND THE LAW nally declared that IN SPAIN the treaty was in ef fect for all of 2014. Invoking Article 25 will not help. If the tax agency has al ready garnisheed your bank account, your legal recourse is to initiate a ‘contenciosoadministrativo’ procedure, in which a citizen acts against the state. My own case took three and a half years.

THE European Investment Bank (EIB) and Spanish energy company Endesa are joining forces to promote electric mo bility in Spain. To this end, the EU bank will provide the Spanish company with €35 million in financing for the installation of electric charging stations across the entire country.

NEW VEHICLES: Some of the huge fleet. FOR some time there has been significant disquiet on the Rock over the number of new cars taking up space in what are supposed to be pub lic car parks near the centre, but the Gibraltar government has struck a £20 million deal to sell space and release central parking. Local firm, the Bassadone Automotive Group has agreed terms for the acquisition of two large areas, with one comprising the entire lower level underground car park and part of the upper level un derground parking at the Lath bury Sports Facility well away from the congested centre. The other is part of the Eu
ropa Business Centre at the Dockyard, adjacent to the new premises being redevel oped by the Bassadone Group to house its new showrooms, offices and warehouses. In addition, the govern ment has been advised by the Bassadone Group that it in tends to relocate part of its in ternational business from Por tugal to the new premises at the Dockyard, thus allowing it to take advantage of secure storage facilities close to its highly specialised workshops. Bassadone currently em ploys 320 staff in Gibraltar and this will increase with the opening of the new facility and transfer of business.
Spanish Uzbek Friendship AN Agreement of Coopera tion for trade and econom ic relations has been en tered into between the Embassy of Uzbekistan and the Madridbased Eurasian Business Alliance. The intention is to pro mote Uzbekistan as a suit able trading partner for Spanish companies and to share information with each other about potential business opportunities in each other’s region. The first area of cooper ation will see an attempt to attract Spanish investors to the implementation of a project for production of functional, dietary and ba by food using European technologies in the Khorezm region.
Waterstones faces problems BRITAIN’S largest high street bookseller Water stones is reportedly due to make a number of redun dancies in its London head office according to the Bookseller periodical. Having climbed out of losses following the 2008 crisis and overcome com petition from Amazon and other online book sellers, the company is now facing challenges caused by the lockdown. It opened its Covent Gar den store in June, but after just a week it has to close a g a i n d u e t o l a c k o f c u s tomers and most of its uni versity sites are still inop erative.
Charging Spain’s green vehicles The project, which will be implemented over the next four years, will make it possi ble to roll out a total of 8,500 charging points for hybrid or electric vehicles. The first 2,000 charging
points will be installed this year on the main motorway network and in Spain’s princi pal urban areas, with the aim of covering 15,000 kilometres to include towns and cities with over 35,000 residents.
This will provide electric ve hicle drivers with charging points every 100 kilometres and charging infrastructure in the country’s main towns and cities. The remainder of the sta
tions will be installed gradually over the next three years until 2023, reaching 8,500 publicly accessible charging points. All of these will be on roads or in public car parks with open ac cess for drivers.

Latest currency news After dropping at the start of July, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has re covered ground over the last couple of weeks, with GBP/EUR moving from 1.09 to 1.11. EUR/GBP has fluctuated between 0.89 and 0.91. GBP/USD, meanwhile, stormed from 1.24 to 1.31 and EUR/USD ral lied from 1.12 to 1.18. What’s been happening? While the Euro has been benefit ing from broadbased weakness in the US dollar, the common currency came under pressure as July drew to a close. New coronavirus worries in Spain
EURO: The common currency came under pressure at the end of July. and the latest Eurozone GDP figures put the euro under pressure, with the German growth data providing particular cause for concern. The German GDP release re vealed a largerthanexpected con traction in the second quarter. The Eurozone’s largest economy also slid in to deflation in July. The Eurozone as a whole suffered a record slump in growth in the sec
ond quarter of 2020. The Pound, on the other hand, has enjoyed a resurgence despite ongoing speculation about the UK leaving the EU without a deal at the end of the year. Sterling’s strength was derived from some endofmonth flows as well as the broad weakness of many of its peers. What do you need to look out
for? Next week one of the biggest cat alysts of movement in the GBP/EUR exchange rate will be the Bank of England’s (BoE) latest policy deci sion. While the Monetary Policy Com mittee (MPC) isn’t expected to make any changes, GBP investors will be keeping a close eye on the bank’s forward guidance. Any clear indication of negative interest rates could dent demand for the pound. Further Sterling movement could be inspired by July’s finalised PMI release. Confirmation that UK busi ness activity soared to a fiveyear high would be poundpositive. The Euro, meanwhile, may also edge higher if the Eurozone’s own final PMI releases for July are up wardly revised. However, the real focus for EUR

It’s extremely precarious
ON the eve of Eid, which is loosely the Muslim equivalent of Christmas, the British government announced they were relocking down selected areas of the UK. It was not rocket science to realise that on closer inspection, these were in the main, parts of the country where the residents were predominately Muslim or ethnic. For regular readers, I don’t need to reiterate a column of many weeks ago, where I reported that a number of these areas were simply ignoring the government warnings and indeed in some cases being told not to worry because this virus ‘could not harm a hair of true believers’ and was merely ‘Allah’s revenge on the Infidels!’ This latest government order ordained that for at least another two weeks those living in these areas would not be allowed to meet up in each other’s homes or gardens. This of course is precisely what is customary during the Eid celebrations. Frankly, to me these instructions were so obviously directed at the Muslim population I thought the government had either finally grown a pair, or were in fact so naïve and knuckle headed they thought

it wouldn’t be noticed. Ha! Some ‘opes. I could actually hear the screams of ‘discrimination’ and ‘racism’ from here. Lo and behold a few hours later, in a hasty move that reeked of total panic, there was another governmental decree. They had now decided to reverse a recent directive in these areas and also re – ban the public from all sporting events, including indoor gyms, dance studios, bowling alleys, water parks, casinos and swim-
ming pools. Weddings would also once again be restricted to 30 people. In other words any establishment that the indigenous locals could have attended for a little social enjoyment were having their imminent opening permissions rescinded - thereby putting everyone in the same miserable boat, which neatly (or clumsily!) sidestepped any accusations of the government singling out any particular section of the population.
In other words, because of the lack of compliance and flouting of the regulations by a few super spreaders, the whole of the local population have been made to suffer, purely to avoid certain sections of the populace feeling picked on or becoming ‘offended.’ To me it’s the weak, capitulatory appeasement of a lily livered government that is actually the most disquieting. It also proves how assured they are that the beleaguered silent majority would be afraid to raise even a peep of discontent. No, the fact is that until we get some truly patriotic strength at the top, the future of the country and culture our ancestors fought to preserve is extremely precarious indeed. As a final word, and although I don’t always agree with many of his right wing views, I also found it disgraceful that last week Tommy Robinson and his family had to flee the country of his birth because his home had suffered an arson attack and they were in fear of their lives. Closed borders and residencia, a Bridge under Troubled Waters CONSULAR MATTERS AS consul for Denmark and a lawyer on the coast, I have come across an important issue for EU citizens living here in Spain. As an EU citizen, you are of course free to travel without restriction and this has always been the case. However, I apologise in advance as I am going to mention Brexit and the coronavirus in this article. The problem that occurred during the Coronavirus lockdown was that Spain closed its borders and people who weren’t Spanish citizens, residents, or cross border workers weren’t allowed to travel to Spain, of course, these people
had previously enjoyed the right to move freely throughout the European Union. Rightly or wrongly a number of citizens of Denmark and the United Kingdom amongst others had been living in Spain without being residents here. This meant that they were effectively blocked from returning to their permanent home in Spain if they happened to be in another country when the lockdown was announced. Had they been residents in Spain, or had their residencia then this would not have been a problem as they would have been allowed to return. Spain did have a very harsh lockdown so they would have had their movements massively restricted on their return. In the news, some EU countries and the British government has announced that anyone

Well, there is nothing that can be done to avoid the travel restrictions, but to avoid being effectively stuck in one country being unable to return to Spain I would advise everyone who is living here in Spain to apply for residencia. Remember to note that if you stay for more than
183 days in Spain you become a tax resident. We have helped a number of citizens and clients with residencia. I would advise that you are very careful with people calling themselves advisors or consultants as they may not be a qualified gestor or a lawyer. As Consul I recommend you instruct a qualified professional. Now lastly Brexit, well the United Kingdom has left the EU
and the transition period will end on December 31, 2020. If you have a holiday home here in Spain there is nothing to worry about as long as you are happy spending 90 days or less in Spain in 180 days. If you live here you need to apply for residencia or residency. If you are British you can still apply for residency next year but the requirements will be more onerous. So if you are already living here you should apply for residency if you haven’t already and if you are in a position to move before the end of 2020 please do so. Remember you can rent or buy a property. Please be aware of unscrupulous people involved in renting and sales and always take advice from an independent lawyer regarding a lease or a property purchase.

Not funny! Dear Euro Weekly News, Having just read your article about the consideration of closing French borders, I experienced an incident in Mercadona yesterday. Having obeyed the rules all through lockdown I stood behind the line at the checkout waiting for the people in front to pack, pay and move away.

ON Friday, July 31, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced his intention to ban the Chinese social network TikTok in the country, which Washington views with suspicion for reasons of national security. For those who don’t know what TikTok is, it is a social networking app that mostly shows short videos of children and many celebrities lip synching to songs or creating some actually pretty good dance moves. It is developed by ByteDance, based in Beijing and has achieved great success among the public, but at the same time it is claimed to have raised great doubts about the security of user’s data and links with the Chinese Communist Party. Tension between the US and China has increased in recent months fuelled by the Covid pandemic, for which the two countries blame each other. “As for TikTok, we are going to ban it in the United States,” Trump said in remarks to reporters, and added, “I have that authority. I can do it with an executive order.” Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hinted that the Trump administration was considering restricting access to TikTok in the States given the possibility that Beijing is using the social network as a means to monitor and distribute propaganda. After an hour of trying the app this writer saw no evidence of any propaganda, but quite a lot of funny pranks and families coming enjoying using it together. Surely this is just another example of Trump’s huffy baby rouine? TikTok general manager in the United States, Vanessa Pappas, warned on Saturday that the Chinese network has no plans “to go anywhere,” in response to President Donald Trump’s announcement to veto it. Pappas stated in her message that they are proud of the 1,500 workers they have in the USA and that they will create another 10,000 jobs over the next three years. “We don’t plan to go anywhere. TikTok is home to creators and artists to express their ideas and connect with people from different backgrounds. We are proud of everyone who calls TikTok home.”

Monday to Friday there is no need to set our alarms since at 8am the leaf blower begins his assault on our ears and by the time he has blown the leaves etc from one end of the street to the other, we are fully awake. As I put my purchases on the belt, the family behind me, (French, two adults and two teenagers, the lads both had their masks around their neck!), started to put their purchases on the belt just behind mine. I put up my hand and gestured to the distance lines on the floor, to which they just looked and carried on loading up the belt. I pointed again, and then the cashier also told them to stop and pointed to the floor to bring to their attention the warnings, they still carried on! She then left the till and walked round to them and pulled back the trolley to the line. No surprise Dear Euro Weekly, It’s not surprising that there is a large reduction in the number of people visiting Spain for a holiday from the UK. Regulations and government advice at both ends are confusing, restrictive and seemingly frequently changing, so we don’t know whether it’s advisable to go to Spain, what restrictions we will find, whether or not there are lockdowns if there are quarantines at either end, whether hotels are open when we arrive, etc, etc. Who would want to go on holiday when such confusion and concern exists? Another question is who do I listen to about this Covid stuff? Do I listen to the doctors and scientists that have spent years studying for degrees in epidemiology and then years working in laboratories and hospitals doing research on every infectious disease known to mankind and treating patients with the most terrible illnesses? Or do I listen to the conspiracy theorists whose uncle’s brother’s sister’s aunt has it on very good authority that, according to someone they know, who has read loads of stuff on the internet, social media and the rantings of Trump’s new guru Dr Stella Immanuel or Katie Hopkins, that we are just being fooled by the Illuminati to let them inject us with a tracking device? I’m still sticking with the experts. You, of course, can do as you wish. The world we now live in is a very strange place. For instance, if you are driving down the road and see a magnificent tree you don’t stop and admire it. But if there is a terrible car crash you slow down to see what’s happening. Luckily the speeding jeep was just the trick I needed to make a serious run for it. Not stopping until I was safely home. As the afternoon rolled on, I decided I couldn’t allow these dogs to roam freely. What if I wasn’t so lucky? What if they attacked a young child, or caused a car crash. I went to the Local Police, who shook their heads and explained it was more likely a matter for SATE in Puerto Banús. All I wanted to do was send a simple message to the owners of the villa, regarding the situation. Why is everything here always so complicated? By now, temperatures were higher and Banús is a place I avoid at all costs, especially post midday. So, instead I returned home and had a swim. That evening as I played ball with my ever happy Jack Russell, Henry, I realised that just like people, not all dogs are kind. However, when faced with angry, or negative people, we have two choices - allow them to take power, or stand tall and take the power back. If that fails, run. Run for your life.

World we live in is a strange place
I DON’T like the new normal and, as many of my friends will tell you, I wasn’t that partial to the old normal! If I want to go out to eat I am now being served by a sweaty person in a mask which is sometimes over the nose and sometimes isn’t. The chef is sweating like a ….... fill in your own offensive, politically incorrect remark here. I left one place as sweat was obviously dripping onto the food he was preparing. It’s 40 degrees. He has a hat and mask and goggles on. Not entirely his fault but I’ll use the salt sachet on the table for seasoning if it’s ok with you. Then there seems to be a bit of an attitude problem around too. I ordered the bill in one place and got it pretty quick but waited nearly 15 minutes for change. It was way over the tipping amount so I wasn’t going to leave it. Finally I went over and asked why it was taking so long and was told in no uncertain terms that the waiter was serving on his own and

While the saying goes - dog is man’s best friend, the dogs that escaped from a vast hillside villa, were clearly not interested in being my friend. Over the thumping sounds of Run DMC, I heard them get closer and felt them on my heels. Pretty much like the beginning of The Italian Job, either side of the road, met with a sheer drop, I had little choice, other than to turn and face their snarling faces. Growing up in a house where dogs were as important, if not more so, than most people, I’m very used to handling even the angriest. As we all know, the worst thing to show any potential enem y , i s f e a r. F r o m d e e p w i t h i n , I shouted so loudly, I’m sure the fishermen in Morocco could hear. The dogs stopped in their tracks. I stood still, and without hesitation commanded that they back off. Slowly, but surely, they calmed and became almost fear ful. I stood in the middle of the road, nervous, but in control. Well, until a Swiss registered Mercedes G-wag-

The only people likely to be impressed are those of the same persuasion. This is basic psychology.

WITH many national surveys giving President Donald Trump’s Democratic challenger a double-digit lead, this polarising president’s assault on decency has unified America across boundaries of race, class and partisan politics - against him. Probably something no American president has ever achieved. Trump has now made more than 20,000 false or misleading claims as president, according to the Washington Post’s Fact Checker tally. It took Trump just 827 days to top 10,000 false and misleading claims, an average of 12 claims a day. What’s more, according to the Post, he averaged fewer than five false

I have noticed on television that, since lockdown, almost everybody interviewed from their homes via video-link is posing in front of a background of rows of bookshelves, thus creating an image of erudition. Everything is so obviously contrived. Richard Branson loves posing before the cameras, with or without female company and in numerous different situations. He hardly needs to score points, so this may be just for the innocent kind of
fun affordable only to the rich. Posers love writing, reading, talking and thinking about themselves. How they are perceived by others is what matters. They are obsessed with their image, photos of themselves and, mainly in the case of women, wearing clothing acceptable to those they need to impress. But, under neath the veneer of confidence, they tend to be stressed - searching desperately for some kind
of acceptance. Appreciation of art, gastronomy or any kind of culture is to be encouraged, but the culture vulture can be a poser on the lookout for an opportunity to impress. “I love that scene in ‘Fidelio’ where Leonore reveals her identity.” “Of course, what Camus was getting at was the futility and danger of totalitarianism.” “To me, the Chassagne-Montrachet has the edge because of its smoky presence.” Many who appear intelligent and nor mal to other people are in fact acting a part. For much of their lives they are not themselves, because they feel they are being watched - being scrutinised. They live behind a veil of smugness and are in constant fear of that veil being penetrated. Whether or not they are ‘successful,’ they feel they need to pose as being endowed with one or more of the following: intelligence, knowledge, wealth, status, experience or physical appeal.

lies and fake stories.” But shortly after the decision, he alleged on Twitter that John Bolton “broke the law by releasing Classified Information (in massive amounts).” Problem is, if the book is nothing but fiction, how can any of the information in it be ‘Classified’? Next, we have a tell-all memoir by President Donald Trump’s niece who describes her uncle as a fraud and bully, a “narcissist” who now allegedly “threatens the life of every American.” And more bad news. A yet-to-be-published, tell-all book by Trump’s ex-lawyer Michael Cohen will reportedly provide ‘graphic and unflattering details about
the President’s behaviour behind closed doors,’ including descriptions of his ‘pointedly anti-Semitic remarks’ as well as ‘virulently racist remarks’ against former President Barack Obama and Nelson Mandela. Trouble is, Trump can’t see any further ahead than the next election. He’s that short-sighted. Maybe he should take time out for a brief trip to Barnard Castle to check his eyesight... DROP THE EGO ton of bricks. I felt trapped, in a very dark place with no way out. Depression hit and the walls were closing in. I knew I had to do something as I was slowly pushing away everyone I loved and I was about to lose it all. So how exactly do you quieten the noise? Can you set yourself free from a negative mindset? Hell yes! I studied hard for two years, I put everything into practice, I tested any different techniques, and now, I am here to show you how!!! We all have ‘voices’ inside our heads commenting on our moment-to-moment experiences, the quality of our past decisions, mistakes we could have avoided, and what we should have done differently. These voices can be really mean and make a bad situation much worse. The voice will always criticise and beat you down at every given opportunity.
But the question is, why? Our ego (or as I like to name her, the witch), feeds off self-doubt and fear. She can be a residue of childhood experiences - automatic patterns of neural firing stored in our brains and dissociated from the memory of the events they are trying to protect us from. If you try to ignore the voice or even dismiss it altogether, It can take charge of your whole life, enabling you to become a slave to the mind. This, in turn, will allow you to believe that the outside world is dangerous and that you need to obey her rules for living in order to survive and avoid pain. You will live your life existing rather than living! So how can you quieten the noise? Step 1 - I would like you to look at your end goal. What is it you would like to achieve? Think of your current goal, your dream. What does it look like?
Where are you when you achieve this goal? Who is the first person to share it with? Now take a moment to align with this next question. How does it feel to achieve your goal? Feel every emotion possible for the next minute. How do you feel? You’re smiling, right? You know what it feels like to reach your goal. You can see your success and know what it feels like. You can feel what it can do for you and your families life? 321... The ego has started. Am I right? Just as you picture everything you want to achieve, that is when she starts! Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal. Step 2 - Acknowledge and understand your thoughts Write down everything, word for word that your ego/witch, is telling you. It is important to be completely honest here. You need to
share EXACTLY what the voice is telling you. Next to each statement, write the following, what physical evidence do I have that makes this thought true? The answer to be ZERO! There is no physical evidence to stop you from being successful. The only evidence you have is FEAR. Fear of failing, fear of judgement, fear of other people’s opinions, fear from past experiences. It is time to face those fears... Name one step you can take today that will bring you closer to your goal. Don’t think of the outcome. Ignore the ‘what if.’ Just give me one step, right now, without thinking about it. What can you do today that will get you closer to your goal? After the 1981 riots in Handsworth and Brixton, Tebbit responded to a suggestion that rioting was a natural reaction to unemployment: ‘I grew up in the ‘30s with an unemployed father. He didn’t riot. He got on his bike and looked for work, and he kept looking till he found it.’ So he became known as ‘On yer bike’ Tebbit, a term that - to this very day - clings to the reactionary old fool like dung to a duvet. But now ‘on yer bike’ has - thanks to the bumbling buffoon the UK now

Johnson, as part of an attempt to bribe Brits to lead healthier lifestyles, has shaken the Magic Money Tree to finance a £2 billion cycling and walking scheme. This appalls me because I believe folk should take personal responsibility for their lifestyle choices. But tragically nowadays self-control and the exercise of willpower are outmoded concepts. Millions have been conditioned to think that it’s the job of bureaucrats to manipulate every aspect of their lives from cradle to grave. The consequence has been a complete surrender of personal responsibility to a grotesque nanny state. Yet many believe that the government should have even greater power. I almost fell off my chair this week when I saw this headline on the Premier

Maitland-Carew told PCN that the campaign is ‘a good start but it can’t stop there. You have to show them what a healthy way of eating looks like, so perhaps positive ads would be a good replacement.’ If we’ve reached the stage where people - having capitulated to a system that’s all but destroyed independence and respect for one’s self and others - now need to be shown the difference between snacking on raw carrots, celery and the likes, and bloody great bags of crisps, then no amount of public funding will reverse the trend. Mark my words, the war against obesity will prove as futile as the idiotic, multi-trillion pound war on drugs.

ARSENAL beat London rivals Chelsea to win the FA Cup inside an almost empty Wembley on Saturday afternoon. Mikel Arteta’s side came from behind to win 2-1 in a game that rounds off a domestic season like no other. Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice after Christian Pulisic had put Frank Lampard’s men in front. Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic was sent off after what proved to be Arsenal’s winner for two bookable offences. Arsenal’s tally of FA Cup wins now stands at 14 more than any other English club. Aubameyang went on to lift the famous trophy - but not before dropping it. It is their fourth FA Cup in seven seasons. Arteta has now won the competition as both Arsenal captain and manager. Football

THE Mini Pre-Season tournament being hosted by Walking Football League newcomers Benahavis was brought to a halt last night after someone called the police to say no masks were being worn. Police ordered referee James Owen to stop the game in progress and everyone was ordered out of the ground. Around 30 spectators and players waiting to play did put masks on, but the police insisted on everyone leaving. No fines were issued. At that stage in the tournament Racing Benahavis were beating Malaga (ex Smiles) 60’s 1-0 when the police stepped in. Malaga 50’s are looking to lead the tournament having won their first two games. The retur n will be held at the Finca Naundrup complex in two weeks time. The Finca is private therefore spectators are allowed with restrictions.
