The administration was reacting to Jet2’s announcement on Monday night that it was suspending its flights and holiday programme for the Costa Almeria from July 28 to August 16. POLICE in Almeria arrested a woman facing a 10-year prison sentence in France for drug trafficking. The fugitive from French justice was caught out when she went to renew her ID in the provincial capital. Police discovered there was an arrest warrant and extradition request for the 25year-old when they checked her details. A court in Bordeaux sentenced the

Fugitives tracked down woman to a decade behind bars for her part in a French-Spanish drug trafficking network which distributed hashish all over Spain. The French authorities busted the gang in October 2017 when they intercepted a van carrying 130 kilos of the

drug on the border at Irun in the Basque Country. Almeria police detained another of the gang members, also fleeing French justice, in Roquetas de Mar in April. Also in recent days, Almeria police

discovered a second fugitive from justice, this time Romanian. He was staying in a hotel in the provincial capital. The Romanian authorities issued a European arrest warrant for 27-yearold RAP for breaking into a garage in the town of Gherla in June 2015 and stealing two chainsaws and other electrical tools. He was sentenced to two years and two months in prison.

ARGUMENT: Ecologists say the go-ahead for the project could open the way to further constructions in the park. NEARLY 200,000 people have signed a petition opposing plans to convert a rural property into a 30-room hotel in the Cabo de Gata natural park. Celine Feutry’s petition against the plans for the four-star establishment in the Genoveses bay has the support of five provincial ecological groups. On Tuesday morning Celine and representatives from Ecologistas en Accion, Amigos del Parque, Genoveses Sin Hotel,

Grupo Ecologista Mediterraneo and Equo handed over copies of the petition at the Andalucia regional government’s Agriculture delegation in Almeria while simultaneously another group presented copies to Nijar Town Hall. “What more do the Junta de Andalucia and Nijar Council need to list to us,” Genoveses Sin Hotel posted on social media. The Junta de Andalucia has decided the project to turn the so-called ‘Cortijo Las Chiqueras’ in front

of the bay into a hotel with swimming pool and parking for 70 cars is environmentally viable and compatible with the regulations governing the protected area. But ecologists fear the go-ahead for the project could lead to further constructions in the park and too many people visiting the area. THE Costa Almeria is being promoted as a destination in more than 700 travel agencies thanks to a collaboration between the provincial council and a global tour operator. Diputacion Tourism deputy Fernando Gimenez underlined the importance of the collaboration with Avoris, which comes under the administration’s ‘Programa Promo’ aimed at boosting the province’s tourism sector. He said it meant travel sector professionals will be offering the Costa Almeria to their customers as “a strong option for enjoying their holidays. “Almeria Province brings together all the ingredients to create an attractive destination for all kinds of public, even more so at this time of year thanks to the quality of our beaches, the inland offer and our tourism

Miss World Spain crown ALMERIA law student Ana Garcia Segundo is the new Miss World Spain. The 23-year-old took the 2020 crown at a gala staged in Marina D’Or in Castellon on Saturday night after three elimination rounds which saw the contenders whittled down from 20 to 10 and then five. She was also named Miss Top Model. In the run up to the contest Ana spoke about what it meant to her to be representing Almeria. In a meeting with the Almeria Provincial Council president she said she felt excited and proud, and told local Spanish press it was “a great honour.” She also made it clear whatever happened she was determined to continue with her studies. Almeria designer Sergi Regal created the exclusive designs Ana wore for the event.

There will also be a weeklong emission of an Almeria promotional video in the 700 Rhodasol and Bedto You agencies. The Diputacion collaboration with Avoris comes in addition to agreements on promoting the Costa Almeria as a destination with online travel portals Logitravel, Destinia and Atrapalo.

Dog pee campaign

ENCOURAGEMENT: The council has been giving out bags and bottles for dealing with doggies’ deposits. ADRA Council has launched a campaign to get dog owners to clean up their pets’ pee from public places or face a possible fine. The ‘De paseo con tu mascota… perro, bolsa y botella,’ translating as ‘Walking your pet… dog, bag, bottle,’ is all about raising awareness and pressing upon owners the importance of not going out with their pooches without something to clear up the animals’ ‘deposits’ and a sanitiser bottle to rinse where doggies urinate. The initiative follows Adra Council’s decision to modify the municipal by-law on pet ownership and protection. Coming into force within the next few weeks will

be the obligation to use non-soapy and non-toxic products to dilute dogs’ urine. Failure to comply with the regulations on clearing up after dogs carries potential fines of between €75 and €500. Animal Protection councillor Elisa Fernandez called on residents to do their bit. She said the council is trying to increase the cleanliness of the town, but that it is “a matter for everyone.” To encourage people to follow the rules and contribute to public hygiene, the local authority has been giving out the bags and bottles from an information stand set up in the Puerta del Mar plaza next to the town hall.

Good start to season IT’S been a good start to the summer holiday season in Mojacar thanks to a strong offer of safety, peace and quiet and strict disinfection and control measures on beaches, in shops and in public spaces, the local council reports. The Municipal Tourist Office said that more than 1,700 people had dropped by the office and information point on the beach over the first fortnight of July. In terms of visitors from other regions of Spain, the greatest numbers were from Madrid, other parts of Andalucia, Valencia, Catalonia, Castilla y Leon, the Basque Country, Navarra and Murcia. There was also an increase in the number of visitors from Aragon and Asturias to the locality. Foreign tourists in Mojacar this month come mainly from France, Belgium and the UK. The tourist office said enquiries by phone and email were also up. The vast majority have been consultations about rules and safety controls on the municipal beaches. The council highlighted the attraction of Mojacar not having any time restrictions in place for beaches, along with the large number of beach assistants and lifeguards and the cleaning and disinfection service. According to the local authority many of this year’s national and foreign tourists are first-time visitors to Mojacar, maintaining they have chosen the locality over more crowded coastal destinations. At the same time, the tourist office has detected less visitors who were visiting Mojacar as one of a number of places on their holiday itinerary. Hotel occupation figures also make for positive reading. For the approximately 2,000 places on offer in three and four-star hotels, occupation levels are as high as 80 to 85 per cent at weekends, although the average stay is three to five nights. There has also been a rise in interest in holiday apartments, with stays of a full fortnight. In addition, visits to the Mojacar Tourism portal have risen since, the council said. The most searched for content relates to beaches. The council’s latest promotional ‘For you peace and quiet, choose Mojacar’ video has meanwhile reached an audience of more than 420,000.

Bird catchers caught out THE Almeria Guardia Civil are investigating seven people for capturing wild finches in violation of nature protection and hunting laws. The investigations relate to three incidents in different locations. A tip off from a member of the public led officers to the Los Pilares area of Hijate in Alcontar, where they found four individuals with a two-metre long mesh net and two birds tied to the ground to act as decoys. The Guardia also found three birds in cages. None had identification rings and there was no documentation to prove ownership. Officers seized all the paraphernalia the four had for the

cers set free. The third incident was in Alcolea. Two people hid among reeds when they saw the Guardia patrol. The officers found a parked car nearby, and spread out the sort of items

used for furtively hunting finches. The Guardia kept the car under surveillance, stepping forward to get the pair to identify themselves when they emerged from their hiding place and approached the vehicle.

Tracked down Building up construction POLICE have tracked down a teenager suspected of stealing from a jeweller’s in Almeria and in three other cities in Spain. The hit on Almeria was at the end of June. The thief used the same method as in robberies in Malaga, Marbella and Zaragoza. He entered shops with a newspaper or some kind of document. When he had what he wanted within reach he used his ‘prop’ to cover it, then scooped it up undetected. In the Almeria robbery he got away with some 60 gold chains. Police reported that a careful analysis of prints and DNA left at the scene, the robbery victim’s detailed description of the young man, along with close collaboration with other police forces, led to the identification of the 18-year-old Colombian and his arrest in Badalona in Barcelona.

THE Almeria provincial government is aiming to build up the region’s construction sector. The Diputacion has given the green light to the first round of its ‘Programa Coopera’ financial assistance for local councils to employ self-employed construction workers or small building companies. In this first block the administration is investing more than €2.6 million in 113 projects in 88 municipalities.

Baby dolphin Rail line concerns doesn’t make it A BABY dolphin which beached in Cuevas del Almanzora tragically did not make it, despite the b e s t e ff o r t s o f t h e Equinac marine life rescue association. An Equinac team rushed to help the little creature in El Calon after a member of the public reported the situation to 112 at lunchtime on July 22. The association said the dolphin was just a few days old, with its umbilical cord still visible, but its mother nowhere to be seen. It was also very thin, and suffering convulsions. Equinac posted on social media that while it is difficult to save dolphins in these cases as they are usually at death’s door, they decided to try. An Equinac vet rehydrated it and administered a

ALMERIA Council is not happy about how works on constructing the city’s AVE high-speed rail line are going. The city administration reported that Mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco held a meeting this week with Jose Carlos Tejada, the coordinator of the Almeria Mesa del Ferrocarril platform for organisations and institutions pushing for improvements to the province’s rail infrastructure, at which they shared their “concern” over “delays” in the works. Both Fernandez-Pacheco and Tejada, along with Town Planning councillor Ana Martinez Labella, agreed that the works on the city’s high-speed rail line are “now more than ever a priority for Almeria.”

The council also criticised what it maintained is a lack of response from the Transport Ministry to two requests for meetings to discuss the situation on national government works and projects which affect Almeria, including the renovation of the city’s old railway station. The mayor had harsh words for Transport Minister Jose Luis Abalos. The city council head said it is “urgent” the ministry “provides us with answers on outstanding matters with the city because silence is not going to resolve the problems or clarify uncertainties. He added, “It is not the mayor the minister is turning his back on, but the more than 200,000 residents who live in Almeria.”

Snake keeper charged A MAN who kept more than a dozen snakes in his Roquetas de Mar home, some of them poisonous, is facing charges for breaking flora and fauna protection laws. Guardia Civil opened an investigation into the snake owner based on information that a person was keeping reptiles, some of them protected species and several potentially dangerous, in a property in the locality. ‘Operation Reptileman’ led to a search of the premises. The Guardia said that some of the snakes have venom so toxic that enough of it could kill someone. Catching some of the snakes was pretty tricky. The Guardia particularly mentioned the cobras,

commenting that their movements are so quick it was difficult to get a hold of and handle them, and meaning they had to exercise extreme caution. The Guardia reported the owner either lacked documentation proving his ownership of the reptiles or produced papers which did not coincide with the creatures in his possession.

THREE months after it closed its doors due to the Covid-19 lockdown, Almeria has reopened its doors to visitors. Tourist visits resumed last Thursday. The cathedral reported in a post on social media that it is participating in the ‘Yo Apoyo Turismo Nacional’ (I Support National Tourism) initiative along with dozens of other monuments across Spain. The aim, the cathedral explained, is to encourage the public to support national tourist destinations, “not only to discover the beauty and heritage which the national territory offers, but to support the sector, our country’s great economic engine, and assist its recovery after this unprecedented crisis.” The cathedral maintained that health

Jobs up for grabs

OPPORTUNITY: The funds will generate employment “at a very necessary time,” the mayor commented. ADRA Council is set to receive funding to employ more than 40 people under a regional government initiative. The local authority has signed up to the Junta de Andalucia Plan for the Activation, Promotion and Recovery of Employment, also known as Plan AIRE. This means it will get €410,000 for creating jobs. “These funds are going to

generate employment opportunities for all ages at a very necessary time, which will be a benefit to the whole town,” commented Adra mayor Manuel Cortes. At the same time, the mayor pointed out, “it will allow us to reinforce the services provided by the council, and as a result, to continue working for a better municipality.” Adra Employment coun-

cillor Antonio Sanchez explained the contacts will be for full-time work for between six to eight months. People will be taken on for jobs including cleaning, painting, maintenance, carpentry, bricklaying and administration. Applicants for the posts have to be registered with the SAE Andalucia Employment Service. The plan is divided into three lines of employment according to age group. Some €195,000 is earmarked for jobless 18 to 29year-olds and €127,000 for those aged 30 to 44. A third line, with an allocation of €88,000, is for long-term unemployment aged between 45 and 64. They must have been registered with the SAE for at least 180 days over the previous nine months. The SAE will send two candidates for each post after initial interviews and a selection of the best candidates. Factors to be taken into consideration are whether candidates are unemployed who live in Adra and if they have been affected by the Covid-19 crisis.

THE police unit assigned to the Junta de Andalucia has reported a beekeeper for unintentionally triggering the wildfire which ripped through some 200 hectares of the Sierra Cabrera mountains in the Mojacar-Turre area in June, according to Spanish press. The reports say a police investigation into the cause of the blaze in collaboration with environment officers from the BIIF Forest Fire Investigation Brigade determined that the point of origin was the remains of a demolished rural property where there had been beehives. Also, that they found signs with the apiary code next to the scorched hives. Initial data reportedly suggested the fire was set off by the incorrect handling of the hives, but the BIIF technical report pointed to negligence in the apiary activities, and the most likely cause was a spark from a bee smoker. In addition, the reports maintain officers found other apiaries in the same area with the same codes as on the burnt signs and noted that new hives had recently been

Fernandez underlined the importance of the project for the municipality, “which will finally have a building to house our municipal music school.” The mayor said the works are expected to be finished next year, with a view to having the school up and running in September 2021. The original project for the school has in fact been modified. The council said changes include fresher-look flooring, improvements to the school surroundings and the construction of an additional office. Once completed the three-storey building will also have nine classrooms, an audition hall and a teachers’ room.

That was my first love of Spain and Flamenco and I’ve been fascinated ever since. “I can’t wait to go back to Spain. Guests have included Paul O’Grady, Gok Wan, Ann Mitchell and Brenda Blethyn. “The idea initially came about as something to do during lockdown,” said Sherrie. “We were talking one day and said ‘let’s do an online show.’ We realised everyone must have been feeling the same as us, lonely, sad and scared. We thought this would be fun and a great way to entertain and include people. Despite four shows a week, Sherrie still finds time to write for Yours, and together with Dee, created an animated version of Wonderbirds accompanied by a book.

Follow the rules THE Transport Secretary Grant Shapps himself will have to quarantine for two weeks when he returns from a holiday to Spain. The Department for Transport has confirmed that the politician flew to Spain recently and will have to follow his own rule change when he returns! The change of rules has thrown thousands of holidays into chaos, including that of the minister’s. Spain’s Canary and the Balearic Islands were not covered by the advice to avoid travel to the mainland, but holidaymakers retur ning to Britain from these islands will still be subject to quarantine for 14 days on their return.

A DOMESTIC cat has become the UK’s first definite case of an animal testing positive for Covid-19. “The Chief Veterinary Officer has confirmed that the virus responsible for Covid-19 has been detected in a pet cat in the UK,” the government announced in a statement issued on Monday, July 27.

ed that this is the first confirmed case of an animal infection with the coronavirus strain in the country, but stressed, “there is no evidence to suggest that the animal was involved in transmission of the disease to its owners or that pets or

other domestic animals are able to transmit the virus to people.” The most likely scenario according to the statement is that the cat caught the virus from its owners, who had tested positive for Covid-19. Both the owners and the cat have made full recoveries and no other animals or people living in the home were infected. The statement points out there have been “a very small number of confirmed cases in pets in other countries in Europe, North America and Asia.” But the Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss made it clear that these cases are “very rare.” She also pointed out that infected animals have so far shown only mild clinical signs and have recovered within days. Medical Director at Public Health England Yvonne Doyle echoed Middlemass’s views, saying, the UK case “should not be a cause for alarm.” She reminded the public that the Public Health England general advice on fighting coronavirus is to wash hands regularly, including before and after contact with animals. The UK case has been reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health.

AFTER being used for walks, as a mere excuse to leave the house, the rate of animal abandonment in Spain has skyrocketed after lockdown. Ana Mula, a lawyer specialised in animal law and a spokesperson for the Institute for Public Policy on Animal Protection, has insisted that “people fraudulently acquired the animals to be able to go out on the public roads.” More specifically, the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RCSS) calculated that around 5,000 dogs have been abandoned, an average increase of around 50 per cent. These figures allude to the fact that the animal has been “treated as a mere tool to satisfy a need.” This makes abandoning them much easier because they are not seen as a conscious part of your family unit but rather as an object that has satisfied your need. In fact, now after the de-escalation phase and with the arrival of summer, “cases of abandonment are already being detected,” explains Mula.

This is a sad reality backed up by the data provided by the RCSS. According to the organisation, the abandonment of dogs has increased by 25 per cent since the start of the de-escalation. Only at the end of last May - during the first weeks in which mobility restrictions were relaxed across most provinces around 2,000 abandonments were registered in Spain. Furthermore, the fact that

shelters were closed during the quarantine caused people who wanted a pet to turn to online sales. This kept the demand for purchased animals up, further increasing the number of animals in Spain. Mula insists that they are “fraudulent” acquisitions that, in many cases, come from illegal farms where the conditions that the animals are kept in are “terrible.”

THE travel industry is again thrown into chaos after Jet2 cancels all flights and holiday packages to mainland Spain for the next three weeks. The company said that as of Tuesday, July 28, flights and holidays will be suspended until August 16 after the UK government took Spain off the ‘air bridge’ list sparking chaos for holiday Brits. Jet2 had previously said it would continue to run its scheduled programme of flights. A statement from Jet2 said: “Following the latest government advice regarding travel to mainland Spain from the UK, we have taken the decision to suspend our flights and holidays programme to Costa de Almeria, Alicante, Malaga and Murcia from July 28 up to and including August 16.” Jet2 is so far continuing to operate their scheduled programme to and from the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands and it says their “usual terms and conditions apply.” The airline is following tour operator TUI which also announced

Jet2 are now urgently contacting customers on holiday in mainland Spain to “advise them of their options regarding flying back to the UK.” The tour operator has asked customers not to call them. In a statement, the company said: “We urge the government to provide the industry with clarity so that we can keep our all-important customers up-to-date and informed.”

Widespread cancellations of foreign holidays have been reported as bookings for UK breaks soar amid fears other countries may follow suit with Spain and be axed from the government’s safe travel list. Staycations are now booming again as Brits shun overseas trips amid chaos over the quarantine order imposed on Saturday, July 25, for those returning from Spain. Bookings for UK breaks have soared as holidaymakers fear that other countries including France, Germany and Croatia could soon be axed from the safe travel list also.

Soaring trade In another blow to Spain’s tourism industry, the Foreign Office last night advised against all but essential travel to the Balearic and Canary Islands, in line with mainland Spain - despite pleas to exempt tourism hotspots such as Mallorca, Ibiza and Tenerife where infection rates are lower. However, just one person has been fined by police for breaching quarantine rules after arriving from overseas, figures from police forces in England and Wales show.

Watchdog groups say that the monitoring of quarantined arrivals is a “sham” and authorities just do not have the manpower to enforce the rules. There was also fury after the government said holidaymakers unable to claim sick pay during the 14-day self-isolation should claim benefits instead. Tourism chiefs slated that decision and regarded it as “outrageous” as potential holidaymakers looking to book for Spain now would be put off altogether. TUC chief

MIRACLE COVERING PORTUGAL has created the first miracle mask against Covid which inactivates the virus. A collaboration between several Portuguese companies and scientific and academic centres has allowed the development of a mask that inactivates the virus that causes Covid-19, endorsed by the João Lobo Antunes Molecular Medicine Institute in Lisbon (iMM). On Saturday, July 25, the project leaders announced that the mask, called MOxATech, has been on sale since April, but its ability to inactivate the virus has only just been confirmed by a series of tests carried out by the iMM. The protective equipment has a coating that neutralises the virus when Covid comes into contact with it. This mask

has been developed thanks to the collaboration between the textile manufacturer Adalberto, the retail company MO, Sonae Fashion, the CITEVE technology centre, iMM and the Universidade do Minho. The virologist of the iMM Pedro Simas, who coordinated the tests, assured that the tests carried out “have shown an effective inactivation of SARS-CoV2 even after 50 washes, observing a 99 per cent viral reduction after one hour of contact with the tissue.” The mask, developed with a technical fabric, integrates several different layers, which are waterproof and reusable. It boasts of a certification from the French Direction Générale des Entreprises that accredits the mask with particle retention of 96 per cent, even after 50 washes.

Increased bilateral trade AN agreement between Turkey and Spain should result in an increase in bilateral trade from €11 billion to €20 billion according to Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan. The minister said “We can boost joint trade in various sectors such as automotive, clothing, iron and steel, electronic, furniture and food.” She also encouraged Spanish companies to submit proposals with regards to railway projects as they have proven their ability and experience in other countries. In addition, both ministers agreed in a conference call to work together in third party countries.

Spanish Fishing Fleet SPAIN’S fishing fleets don’t just operate in the Mediterranean as there are a number of vessels all over the world, including Seychelles, where they search for big catches of tuna. One company uses West African crew but at the latest change over, 97 out of 207 new crew were tested positive for Covid-19 and their vessels were impounded and used to quarantine the active cases. This has resulted in lower catches and increased medical, travel and transport costs according to a company spokesperson.

Undercover Investigation BUSINESSMAN Mike Ashley, owner of the Frasers Group, Sports Direct and Newcastle United is rarely out of the news and this time it is sug­ gested that his company is paying workers at its warehouse less than the minimum wage. Five years ago, The Guardian newspaper undertook an undercov­ er investigation into the warehouse in Shirebrook Mansfield which it is suggested prompted the company to review its working practices and workers did receive an element of back pay.

Now the newspaper has sent in another undercover team and whilst acknowledging that things have got better, there is an allegation that workers there may once again not be paid the legal minimum wage. In what is possibly a tenuous ob­ servation, The Guardian reporter has suggested that because the staff are not paid for their 30­minute breaks during the day and allegedly are not allowed out of the ware­ house during those breaks, it could be that they should receive addi­ tional payment.

A Frasers Group spokesman told The Guardian that its warehouse workers did not have to be paid for the breaks and that the business had “no rule preventing staff leav­ ing the warehouse during a rest break.” It also acknowledged The Guardian article in a statement to the Stock Exchange saying “We of course take any comments about our workplace conditions very seri­ ously and will investigate them as appropriate, in line with all applica­ ble laws and regulations.”

THE largest department store chain in Europe, Spain’s El Corte Inglés tradi­ tionally holds its annual shareholders meeting at the end of August, but brought the date forward to Sunday July 26 with the majority of shareholders attending digi­ tally. Two major matters to be raised will be a reduction in the dividend to be paid to a total of €37.5 million and a decision to incorporate its subsidiary, clothing brand Sfera into the main compa­ ny for strategic reasons. There is little likelihood of job losses for the brand which operates 71 stores in

Spain and Portugal and has a number of franchises around the world. Unlike many other Euro­ pean stores, El Corte Inglés follows a policy of running merged companies both within its department stores as well as leaving them as standalone retail units which include Bricor, Hiper­ cor, Supercor plus the new Sfera in order to take ad­ vantage of smaller outlets. Overall profits for the fi­ nancial year (March 2019 to February 2020) are up by just over 20 per cent and represent the most success­ ful year of trading since 2010.

I personally think it’s a form of child abuse. If I were at the helm I would seriously be

pursuing some form of prosecution. At this point I’d just like to throw in a few more PC changes recommended by similar morons. Homeless people should be referred to as ‘Outdoor Urban Dwellers.’ Bisexual prostitutes become ‘Equal Opportunity Sex Workers.’ The poor are ‘Economically Marginalised.’ Being drunk is ‘Chemically Inconvenienced.’ Criminals are ‘Behaviorally Challenged.’ Fat people, ‘Metabolic Overachievers.’ Housewives, ‘Domestic Engineers.’ Illegal aliens, ‘Undocumented Migrants.’ And so on. Makes you lose the will don’t it? Excuse me while I go off to get severely chemically inconvenienced! Said my final goodbye to my dear friend Geoffrey Kenion this week. The ceremony was held in the picturesque tranquility of Soller cemetery and was attended by many of his close friends and family. His loving wife Sallyann oversaw the whole occasion with a wonderful dignified serenity and children Simon, Joseph, Rachel and Ella, all delivered moving tributes to their Dad. GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY OK, I’m just going to come out with it if I hold a door for you and you haven’t got the decency to say thank you, shame on you. Basic human manners are still very much noticeable by their absence. Sad to say, it’s always snooty females who are the culprits of this social crime. Recently, I hosted a dinner at home for some friends, and over the course of the evening, it became something of a focus group meeting. The subject - what, in 2020, really bothers you? We laughed at some points, and scowled at others. Some, such as the ungrateful door holding, being as old as water, while other points far more modern. Anyhow, I decided to let you know what really bothers us at this moment in time. The group made up of Spanish, Italian, Irish and English. Male and female - aged between 30 and 50. In no particular order - People who use far too much perfume. Men who dine shirtless at beachclubs. Women who wear short shorts, past the age of 25. Those who are unable to correctly hold a knife and fork. People who travel to foreign countries, yet refuse to try local cuisine. Mothers pushing baby buggies directly at you, as they take over the pavement. People who get photographed next to super cars they clearly don’t own. People who wear face masks with their noses uncovered. Girls who screech and scream when they meet. People who clearly carry fake handbags, with serious attitude. Those who are unable to hold their alcohol. Snobbery. Badly behaved kids in restaurants. People who refuse to clean up after their dogs. People who tell you how much their car / watch / shoes etc cost. People who pout in photographs. People who walk along the street with their phone call on loudspeaker. People who don’t look up from

their phone, whilst walking on the street. People who can’t pronounce certain words that they frequently use. Usually designer brand names. People who make a big deal about being in the ‘Priority Queue’ when boarding an airplane. People who vape. People who forget an item at the supermarket checkout, and then rush off for 10 minutes returning with numerous items. People with fake food allergies. Name droppers. Middle aged women who dress like their daughters. Of course, there were many more, but sadly as I sipped my first espresso the following morning, and attempted to ignore the staggering number of empty wine bottles, ready for recycling, I was unable to recall them. Furthermore, as I tried to decipher the drunken scribbles of notes we had made while in midflow the previous night, I realised that per haps another thing that bothers me, is how my own handwriting has deteriorated so badly over time. These days it’s an artfor m that has been replaced by one’s ability to type quickly into a phone. I have decided that it’s time I began to practise writing letters once again. Yes, it may take me some time, but at least it will keep me out of trouble.

BUSINESS IN THE Almeria Property Finder, Albox “WE are busier now than before lockdown, and sales are good,” Almeria Property Finder owner Cathie Saunders told EWN. Even during the lockdown period, the agency had plenty of work and sales continued. The only changes as a result of the health crisis have been the social distancing, mask wearing and sanitising procedures, and viewings are now “a little different.” Demand from buyers is currently so buoy-

ant that Cathie’s main concern is having enough new properties on the books to meet that. In fact Cathie puts the boom in business down to the Covid-19 situation. “Buyers are more focused and more determined to find a property than at the beginning of the year. “A lot of people who were on the fence due to Brexit have now had time to think about it and have decided to just go for it.”

Costa del Sol by the demand for both flooring and furniture and from their point of view people are visiting with the intention to buy rather then just to look around. Their biggest problem is obtaining stocks as many of their suppliers are not working at full capacity, but apart from that, they have no reason to complain.

CRAIG LONGSTAFF and his wife Nicola from Fishy Fishy, in Moraira, have a positive take on the situation “Although our terrace has been cut to 50 per cent capacity, allowing only six tables, we have seen a drop from being 50 or 60 per cent down to 20 per cent. However, I don’t think this summer will get back to normal,” said Craig who also pointed out that “It’s not too bad, one change is that Nicola and I have had to go from only working three or four hours a day to now working eight to 10 hours a day. Our staff are now all off ERTE, but down to the only hours we are able to pay them.” When asked about the news of quarantine for UK travellers he said “We haven’t seen the effects of it yet, but friends from other businesses have already had cancellations,” and added, “We will get by as we are a family business, but unfortunately some businesses will not survive.”

Pedro Salvat, Toldos Guardamar THE lockdown had a very significant impact on Toldos Guardamar, the company’s director Pedro Salvat told EWN, especially because a good many of their customers are British, Belgian or other foreign nationalities. The many orders they had before the State of Alarm came into force had to be held on “standby” due to the restrictions. Now however the team is twice as busy as before lockdown. Not that they were idle during the lockdown. In fact far from it. Paid for out of its

own pocket, the company produced face masks, which the team delivered to people’s houses, not only to their customers, but to anyone who got in touch with them. Some 6,000 in all,

completely free of charge. They also took people items like gloves and hydroalcoholic gel. It was the company’s contribution to the fight against Covid-19, Pedro

Costa Blanca South said. Yet another gesture during lockdown was offering anyone working in law enforcement, firefighters and medical staff a whopping 50 per cent discount on all their products. One difference for Toldos Guardamar in the new normal has been the decision to offer the special offers it would normally have run earlier in the year now in the summer months so that customers can take advantage. Their usual top quality service remains the same as ever.

MORE than a month after Spain’s long, and for many tough, State of Alarm came to an end and the lockdown was lifted, the Euro Weekly News has been speaking to businesses to find out how they are getting on in the ‘new normal.’ We wanted to know what is different. How does the situation for businesses of all kinds now compare with how things were going before the Covid-19 pandemic impacted on pretty much every aspect of daily life? Have companies had to make a lot of changes to how they operate, or are things rolling along much as they used to?

Olive Properties, Bedar

BUSINESS for estate agency Olive Properties is different now from February, says company coowner Joanne Desmond, but the current situation seems really positive. “We are having a huge volume of enquiries,” Joanne told EWN. “Obviously not all clients can travel yet. However, things look very promising and clients are keen to get here. We are seeing an increase in people visiting and the demand is high.” In terms of changes which Olive Properties has undergone as a result of the pandemic, again it is all for the good. “We were quieter, but it gave us the time to do the jobs we were too busy to do before,” Joanne said. “We have fine-tuned the business over the last three months and organised things. We feel more efficient as a team as a result. “We did virtual viewings and videos, which resulted in sales during lockdown, and we are still offering this service and will continue to as a new avenue.” Joanna is optimistic about the rest of 2020. “As a business we are now ready for a positive and busy second half of the year. We are experiencing a lot of interest from foreign buyers, and Spanish also. We feel the end of the year will be very busy and will make up for the quieter months we experienced. We are full of energy and already busy!”

Michelle Johnstone Costa del Sol THE last time we spoke with Michelle who with husband Tony operates Ace of Shades, she was a bit worried about the future as there were a number of restrictions of the work that the company could undertake. Now however she says that they are extremely busy thanks to the heat, mosquitoes and sadly some burglaries and they can’t install screens, awnings and shutters quickly enough. There will be fewer holiday home owners arriving from the UK, but Michelle is very optimistic about the future and the fact that there is still a large potential market for the company.

And what specific changes have businesses had to introduce? Has the effect of the coronavirus situation simply been negative, or have there in fact been some positives, prompting businesses to look at how they could be doing things better? We also asked businesses where they think we go from here. Covid-19 has thrown the world into uncertain times, but what’s clear is that the business community here in Spain is resilient and motivated to move forward.

Harris Furnishings, Pedreguer Costa Blanca North JAYNE HARRIS who owns Harris Furnishings, a furniture retail and reupholstering business in Pedreguer with husband Dave, said, “We have been extremely busy since reopening. I think because people have been stuck indoors critiquing their homes so when they could get out they were ready for a change. “Everything here is working fine, we are following health measures which is reassuring to customers as they know that they are in a safe place. Our retail side has been quieter but this is actually the quietest time for that sector each year, so there is not much change,” said Jayne. She added, “I do think that the news over the weekend will affect business as 50 per cent of our customers are people travelling here from the UK who have holiday homes.”

Paul Garrod, Solar Solutions Costa Blanca South Spain “EVERYONE has been affected by the three-month lockdown,” Solar Solutions Spain’s Paul Garrod says, but the main issue for his company after the State of Alarm came to an end was getting hold of stock. The restrictions on transport and movement meant shipping came to a halt. The situation is now getting back to normal, Paul explained, and Solar Solutions Spain is busy and working the same way as before the pandemic. But Paul admits that recent fresh outbreaks of the virus have got him concerned another lockdown could happen. “If there’s a second wave it will be worse than the first,” he believes, adding, “people need to adhere to the rules.”

Policlinica Omega, Campello DUSTY ATKINSON from Policlínica Omega, in Campello, was keen to point out that “as we are in healthcare we have been very much in demand as our clients wish to see their psychologist or nutritionist. Also, we offer Covid testing so that people can see if they have been infected with the virus and this has understandably been extremely popular.” She added, “We were very well prepared when we opened and put in place all the health measures required. People were nervous at first but once they realised they were in a

Steve Brooks, Swift Removals Costa Blanca South SWIFT REMOVALS was very busy pre-lockdown, the company’s Steve Brooks told EWN. When the State of Alarm came into force there were two weeks when the company wasn’t allowed to operate, but then government authorisation as a transporter of essential items allowed the firm to continue working. The problem, Steve explained, was that while clients’ belongings could be moved, people themselves had to stay put. The result was very crowded Swift Removals’ warehouses until the restrictions were eased. Business is now 80 per cent back to normal, Steve reported. “We’re very lucky. We have a lot of local work, moving people around Spain.” Steve says the recent outbreaks make the future an unknown. “You can’t control the future, so you just have to see what tomorrow brings.”

Samantha Bayley SAMANTHA runs her own business The Painted Kitchen where she renovates existing kitchens and also works with husband Joe who supplies completely new kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Her feeling is that generally, business is quite good as during lockdown people fell out of love with their kitchens and are now looking for a change.

THE name Big M Promotions is synonymous with Martyn Wood who has been promoting live events on the Costa del Sol for many years. Speaking to him about the new normality highlights a problem that has affected so many promoters and entertainers in Spain as basically, his diary which was originally full for the spring and summer of this year is empty. He has one event, the Celtic Night in the Mijas Pueblo Auditorium on August 8 and then nothing at the moment until November, but he is keeping cheerful and hoping things will get easier soon.

EASY HORSE CARE “Maybe you can’t change the world by saving one horse, but you can change the whole world for the horse that you save.” - Sue Weeding, Easy Horse Care Co-founder THE last few months have been challenging for everyone, no matter where you are or what you do, but for one couple, to some extent it has had to be life carrying on as normal. There has been no rest for Rod and Sue Weeding as they have continued to battle through against all the odds and care for the 122 horses, ponies and donkeys they have in their care in these ever challenging and difficult times. The couple founded the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, a registered charity, in 2008 and their lives have taken a path they could never have envisaged back then. Turning their peaceful Rojales finca into a rescue centre they have taken in all sorts of animals from cats and chickens to pigs and peacocks. The horrific stories which come with these animals, such as starvation, malnutrition, injury, abandonment and abuse come at an emotional cost to both Rod and Sue who encounter such atrocities all too often. But it is the financial burden that the pair undertake which is incomprehensible for most, with the horses costing around €4,800 per week on food alone. The Centre works closely with the local authorities including the National Police, Guardia Civil and SEPRONA and is well respected and recognised across the Costa

Blanca and further afield, regularly receiving calls from the authorities asking for help and assistance in rescuing equines. Rod and his trusty 25-year-old vehicle is on call 24-7 and has been called upon to go to Murcia and Andalucia to assist in rescues. Yet, despite the tremendous and invaluable work Easy Horse Care does, it remains un-

supported financially. Despite years of pleas and requests it receives no funds and relies entirely on donations and money coming from its charity shops and open days. The severe and extended lockdown in Spain has put unprecedented pressure on its resources, with shops closed for so long and forcing the ending of its Open Days; now replaced by the new Daily Tours. It has had to rely on donations only for the last four months as all other means of income were severed, and lack of funds meant they had to let go of the few paid workers they had. With an average cost of €40 per week to feed each horse, the financial pressures are immense: “These last few months have seen the arrival of two new donkeys and two horses,” said Sue: “One of the donkeys came with many problems, including malnutrition, worms, neglected feet, painful infection due to untreated wounds and both donkeys had to be castrated. Sue adds: “We have had tremendous support from our growing team of volunteers, who have worked with us to keep the fields clean (no easy task in this hot weather), help with the feeds, grooming, and with our new daily tours. We are so very grateful to them and to our media team who have helped to update our Facebook and public relations. Also, our shops have reopened, and we are so thankful to our shop volunteers and for the delivery and collection of furniture team. “Also a special thank you to the Albox Corner Shop for their incredible support and the money they have raised for the rescue centre that helped us keep going through lockdown. Also to Dorothea, our vet and Enrique the Farrier, and a huge ‘thank you’ to all the public who continue to follow, support and donate to us. We could not survive without you!”

THE weekend brought a shock, sharp turnaround in the decision the UK government made about lifting quarantine measures by an action to reinstate them, leaving British travellers and Spanish businesses reeling. The decision was made due to two days of high numbers of infection across Spain that were mainly seen in Catalonia. As Monday arrived and the UK had firmly put their foot down Spanish authorities reassured that these outbreaks were under control. Just as Brits were becoming accustomed to following the health measures in Spain and their panic began to dissipate, Boris Johnson’s own panic set in and a decision seems to have been made without sufficient time to allow people to even take in what is happening. Sure, he could be making the right decision, he could be protecting his people. If this is the case we should definitely be giving him a virtual pat on the back instead of shooting him down or attacking him. Some might also see an ulterior motive in that the government made the decision to protect themselves from any further derision with the way they handle the virus in the early stages. In making this decision have they added another nail in the coffin for Spain’s tourism industry? If so, will this drag the UK’s travel industry with it? Spain’s Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol were understandably seeing lower numbers than recent years gracing their beaches and bars, but companies had begun to find ways of working round that. Many had sunk the last of their money into remodelling to cover for safety measures in the gamble that it would pay off and lucky for some it had. Maybe we should take a little time and ask that if our governments are just as confused as we are and can make such urgent and overreactive decisions, is there a chance they could easily lift it again before the week is through?

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I have to say that I entirely agree with Kevin Park (Issue 1827) about visitors not bothering about wearing masks or social distancing. They march down the middle of the pavement crowded together and we have to move out of the way, very often into the road. Twice this week, I have gone into the centre of Fuengirola for shopping purposes. I was truly shocked and angered that so many people are simply not taking this virus seriously. Not only young people but older couples and whole families with no protection at all. And unfortunately, KP is quite right: they were all foreign tourists. Nearly all Spanish people, including visitors, were wearing masks and staying apart. This was mid-morning: what on earth must it be like at night when folk have had a few drinks? How many more deaths do they need in order to realise that this virus is still around? We, who live here, have abided by the rules for over three months. We didn’t go out except for essential shopping, we didn’t meet up with friends or family and so many businesses couldn’t survive and went bust. We didn’t go through all that for some uncaring, irresponsible visitors to come along and ruin it all again. Just imagine if the Costa del Sol had to

I thought it was a delay in mourning the passing of my dog, or the fact, one of my other dogs had killed my favourite stray cat that I fed, but it was neither! It was fear I have been working on the content of my free five days, women only masterclass and full eightweek course for three months and I was scared of releasing it! The

I am amazing at helping others, but sometimes I forget to take my own advice. It again fell down to the worry of other people’s opinions. I feared being spoken about

negatively, I feared being judged, I wanted to quit! What would quitting achieve? Absolutely nothing! Quitting is the easy option. Quitting is NOT in my dictionary. There was no way on God’s earth that I was going to sit here in 20 years’ time and say to myself, “I wish I had done that!!” It was time to reach out to my trusted best friend, My journal. Put pen to paper and write down my feelings and fears. Next to each fear, I asked the same question that I ask my clients, What physical evidence do I have that makes this fear a reality? The answer... ZERO! There was no evidence at all! I decided it was time to get over myself! I set up the event, added the content and with butterflies in my tummy, I released it. This was it. The moment I feared, yet I faced it come what may. Within 24 hours, 84 women had requested to join and the num-

bers are increasing daily! The voice was wrong, but then I knew that really. I just allowed it to become louder than my beliefs. My whole point to this week’s column is split into two topics: 1. If you are a businesswoman, please do not be afraid to admit to your fears. Share your flaws, you do not need to paint that perfect picture 24/7. There is no such thing as perfect. Be proud of your imperfections as that is what makes you grow. 2. To any woman who is reading this. You’ve got this! Life isn’t a rehearsal, so don’t act as if it is. Achieve that dream, push through your fears and give the big middle finger to anyone who says you can’t! that people with a certain variation of the PDSS2 gene don’t need to consume as much coffee to get a caffeine hit. Those without the variation metabolise caffeine more quickly and as a result, are more likely to want to drink more coffee. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Trieste, Italy, studied the DNA of around 3,000 coffee drinkers in the Netherlands and Italy. Participants were asked to complete a survey about how many cups they had each day. It found Italian people with the DNA variation, on average, drank one less cup of coffee a day than those without it and it was slightly less in the Netherlands for those with the variation. According to research group Mintel, the amount of money being spent on coffee in the UK alone should reach £4 (€4.6) billion in 2020. Many consumers purchase their caffeine shot from high street coffee shops with Costa Coffee being the most popular followed by Starbucks and having spotted another market McDonald’s is catching up fast. Since 2015, annual sales have increased by £1 (€1.15) billion and the average drinker has drifted away from the high street café to specialist coffee shops.

When asked during a White House press briefing on Tuesday about the federal prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell for her alleged role in recruiting, grooming and sexually abusing underage girls, President Donald Trump responded, “I just wish her well, frankly.” To reassure me that I wasn’t hallucinating to this bizarre response to the arrest of Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged accomplice, Trump said it again: “I wish her well.” Maxwell has been charged with helping Jeffrey Epstein commit serious and grotesque crimes relating to the sexual abuse of children. Trump was personal friends with and used to party with Epstein. Trump once declared, “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy. He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.” I don’t care what you Trump supporters think of me. You cannot tell me these are

words you want to hear coming from the POTUS. He absolutely raving insane. It is also outrageous that he has White House press conferences and talks about the pandemic without having either of his medical experts on stage with him. A fellow doctor said the other day that, in the world of infectious diseases, Anthony Fauci is like a God. His knowledge is second to none. But obviously there is only room for one God to be at the lectern answering questions. Trouble is Trump’s answers are mostly lies and if not an out and out lie they are simply wrong. Even Fox, his friendly news channel, ripped his lies to pieces. When being interviewed by Chris Wallace he simply called Trump out on every lie he told and there were quite a few. He has done a complete 180 on mask wearing. The list of rubbish he talks is endless. The only time he seems to make any sense is when reading off a tele prompter. Even then he reads like a child stumbling over words and repeating himself. When challenged he will use his favourite phrase ‘lots of people have said.’ He never actually says who they are. So bring it on folks trying to defend him, to me he is a dangerous man and time will tell who’s right.

LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp awarded League Managers Association Sir Alex Ferguson Manager of the Year trophy. Klopp guided Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League title and the first title in England’s top flight in 30 years this season, after leading the Reds to a Champions League crown in 2018-19. THE whole of the next football season in England could be played in front of reduced capacities says a senior government adviser. The first pilots for the return of crowds to sporting events in England took place with a cricket friendly at The Oval on Sunday, July 26, and additional test events are taking place at Edgbaston, the World Snooker Championship and Glorious Goodwood in the next week. Professor Calder said: “We need to know, actually, does it matter if you’re shouting, how far will those droplets spread?” But the Professor, who has chaired the cross-sport working group with government and health officials on the return to sport - has said that events are highly unlikely to have full capacity crowds this year. “I would be very surprised if we could get full stadia back this year,” he said. “Realistically I think it probably will need a vaccine and also a high take-up rate of that vaccine before we can really see full capacity stadia.” He also revealed that experiments are underway to assess whether droplet spread is increased by chanting and singing, and therefore whether there may be a greater risk of coronavirus transmission. “At a football or a rugby match, the fans are going to be shouting and chanting and singing, I hope, and we need to be sure that the people in front of them are as safe as possible.”
