PM Pedro Sanchez is fighting for Spain and has publicly slammed Boris Johnson’s decision to introduce a quarantine for travellers retur ning to the UK. “The decision to impose a mandatory 14day quarantine (10 days was being muted at the time of going to press) on travellers entering the UK from Spain and to warn Britons against travelling to the country is an error based on incorrect epidemiological reasoning,” said Sanchez. Speaking on Spanish TV on Monday night, July 27, the PM said much of the country, a hotspot for UK tourists,
had a lower infection rate than the UK. Invest in education Health THE region of Murcia will receive €73 million of the €2,000 million from the financial aid that the central government will allocate to the autonomous communities to meet the costs generated by the coronavirus in the educational system, as assured by the PSRM PSOE in a statement. The socialist mayors in the region of Murcia have asked the regional government to invest part of that amount in hiring more teachers and the cleaning and disinfection of educational centres. The council members have demanded that the community explain “what it is going to do” with this financial aid and recalled that the PSOE and “the whole” educational community have been asking the community president, Fernando López Miras, for weeks, for the “same commitment” that the central government has shown with this extraordinary fund. In this sense, they have said that, without good educational planning, the problem of conciliation will “worsen even more” in the case of possible outbreaks, for which reason it has also asked the López Miras to make the necessary resources available. “The virus is still among us, and in these extraordinary circumstances, the Ministry of Education must give a response

THE Torrevieja Health Department will soon be 15 years old, managed, under administrative concession, by the Ribera Salud group. Although prolonging the public-private collaboration contract is a decision of the Valencian government, Ribera Salud wish to continue collaborating in the management with a commitment to investment, employment, quality of care, lower waiting lists and security for the next six years, valued at €40 million. New homes THE green light has been given to the construction of 64 new homes in Orihuela. The Local Government Board of Governors has approved the urban development licence for the basic project for the construction of four buildings for 62 homes in PERI Las Filipinas. In addition members agreed a further application for two family homes with swimming pools in Calle Fontanella. A proposal by the Department of Infrastructure to update the sewerage tariff was also given the go ahead, and the €212,000 refurbishment of the IES Gabriel Miró building was awarded to Ingeniería Natural, Agua y Medio Ambiente SL.

TWO HURT: The biker reportedly lost control and hit a guardrail. TWO people were injured when a motorbike crashed into a guardrail in Pinoso. The accident occurred on the CV-840 road (km 25.5), at the well-known ‘tia Adela’ bends. According to Local Police, the motorcyclist lost control of the vehicle, causing the two occupants to fall to the ground and crash into the guardrail on Friday, July 24. The 20-year-old driver suffered leg injuries while the passenger, 17, sustained scratches, also to her leg. Both were conscious at the scene and taken to a nearby hospital. NATIONAL POLICE in Elche have arrested five young people for immobilising a suburban train travelling between Murcia and Alicante. When the controller reproached them for travelling without a ticket, they reportedly used the emergency lever, forcing the train to stop in order to avoid a collision between the different trains on the track. Officers set up a ‘continuous surveillance system’ in Callosa de Segura to locate, identify and arrest the group. The minors, of Spanish and Moroccan nationality, are accused of the crimes of public disorder by accessing a suburban train without paying for a ticket and activating the emergency lever stopping the convoy on the tracks, paralysing the service until the company’s operators were able to re-establish circulation, causing serious damage to

An expensive 1.45km journey MARIA, a 65-year-old who lives in Godella, Valencia, recently received notification of a €601 fine. The sanction was imposed on March 25 when she took food to her daughter, a doctor and the mother of children aged four and one, who lives in neighbouring Rocafort and works at the Arnau de Vilanova hospital. “She had just come off duty so I decided to take them something to eat,” Maria told Levante newspaper. As she was about to leave the food, the Local Police stopped her and asked what she was doing out in the street. Her daughter saw what was going on, left the house and tried to explain, but to no avail. Maria must now pay €601 for a ‘serious offence’ and flouting State of Alarm travel restrictions. She intends to pay up promptly to be eligible for a 50 per cent reduction but is indignant at the “lack of
understanding and common sense.” Maria’s daughter has been to Rocafort’s Local Police to complain: “But to top it all they told me I should be grateful they hadn’t fined my mother €1,500 instead,” she seethed.

Hammer attack ROSALÍA HM, the woman brutally attacked with a hammer in Cartagena, allegedly at the hands of her husband, is still in hospital in a very serious condition, according to health sources. Hours after the attack, the 62-year-old woman was operated on in the Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia, where surgeons worked hard to save her life. Meanwhile, her husband, Juan MG, remained in the cells of the Comisaría of the National Police, after trying to kill her. It was the suspect
himself who notified authorities by phone what he had done. In his call, the man detailed that his wife was badly injured and requested urgent medical attention. He also confessed that he himself had hit his wife with a hammer. In addition to National Police officers, health workers attended the home and on seeing the serious injuries to the woman’s head due to trauma, decided to transfer her to the Virgen de la Arrixaca. She was first taken to ICU and from there to the operating room.

VIETNAMESE PIGS: An exotic species classified as invasive. THE Alicante Guardia Civil carried out several actions last week related to wild animal species, invasive species or those not native to Spain and others, hunted illegally. The Patrulla del Servicio de Protección a la Naturaleza of Elche seized two Vietnamese pigs, a species classified as invasive - and a wild boar, illegally caught, that the owner had kept as a pet. Apparently, the wild boar came from poaching and had injuries to the muzzle, probably related to the stress caused by being locked up. The Vietnamese pigs are an exotic
species classified as invasive (due to their uncontrolled and damaging expansion of wild ecosystems), so their possession is prohibited. An investigation was carried out for alleged violations of the Hunting Law of the Valencian Community and the Natural Heritage and Biodiversity Law, for the possession of species included in the Spanish Catalogue of Invasive Exotic Species. The alleged poacher was also denounced for the lack of authorisation for a zoological area and for lacking an administrative licence for small poultry farms for self-consumption.

Health spending THE region of Murcia has reduced its spending on public health per inhabitant by almost 10 per cent, according to Amnesty International. Regional spokesperson for human rights organisation, Joaquín Sánchez, blames both the regional and central authorities for this, claiming: “There has been no commitment to investment in health, which has led to a deterioration in the conditions of the population more vulnerable like older people.” Amnesty International recommends that the central and regional authorities “give urgent priority to increasing budgetary allocations for the National Health System and prioritise investment in primary care in the allocation of resources,” among other measures.

John, a former RAF aircrew member and a life member of the Royal Airforces Association (RAFA), now lives in Javea. He was born on July 25 in Sheffield and volunteered for aircrew training in June 1940 when he was just 19. A varied career followed, during which John flew many operations during the Second World War, including two sorties in support of the famous Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942. He also flew on one of the last, key operational sorties that dropped equipment and supplies to the Resistance, northwest of Cannes, on Sep-

After retiring in 1969 he spent some years working as an executive for a company in East Anglia, before moving to Javea in 1986. NIGHTLIFE was responsible for the spike in the Valencian Community’s Covid-19 cases during the first month of ‘new normality.’ According to official Generalitat figures, cases originating in pubs, clubs and discos account for 10 per cent of the region’s outbreaks but practically half of its positive cases. There are currently 35 outbreaks in the region, with 22 located in Valencia Province, seven in Alicante and six in Castellon. Fifteen were linked to family gatherings, while four originated in ‘social’ surroundings. Three outbreaks were linked to hospitals, two were classed as ‘imported’ while another in Rotova (Valencia) lacked official details. Thirty-two of the 35 outbreaks led to 207 positive cases while the three others were responsible for 197 contagions. In other words, 8.5 per cent of the outbreaks caused 48.7 per cent of the region’s positive Covid-19 cases. Gandia was responsible for 114 positive cases, Peñiscola for 59 and Santa Pola for 24. The Generalitat’s Health department responded by closing down Gandia’s nightlife venues and carrying massive PCR tests in the two other municipalities. Epidemiologists explained that tracing contacts at family or social gatherings is relatively easy but more complicated in clubs, pubs and discos.

No escape A CLOSE EYE: Admitted to the Hospital General Universitario for observation.
NATIONAL POLICE officers in Alicante, Elche and Benidorm are keeping a close eye on immigrants admitted to the Hospital General Universitario, in Elche, in the worry that they may try to make an escape attempt. The immigrants, who arrived in different boats to the coast of various towns in the province of Alicante, now number more than 100 people, who do not want to be confined to hospital facilities. During the past weekend, there were moments of tension, with an attempted riot by the more than
100 people who remain in the medical centre. At first, they had been admitted to the hospital emergency room to undergo observation where samples were taken for a PCR test. Later, they were transferred to the tents of the field hospital, where they will remain in quarantine for 15 days. If they show negative for Covid-19 they will be assigned somewhere to move them. Meanwhile, the National Police officers have reinforced surveillance, leaving the police stations of Alicante, Elche and Benidorm to a minimum.
Call for responsibility GENERALITAT president Ximo Puig asked for “extra responsibility” on the part of the public. It was essential to maximise measures to combat the recent spike in Covid-19 cases, Puig said: “Masks, distancing, hygiene, fresh air. For you and for us all. “We are at a crucial moment for our region’s present and future,” the president declared.
“The virus is still here, it hasn’t gone,” Puig warned, urging people to return to the same levels of individual responsibility that they demonstrated during the worst moments of the emergency. “In some cases, we have lost our respect for the virus and that is an error we have to put right,” the president stated. He also warned that the regional government would not hesitate to adopt stringent measures if necessary. “We must protect ourselves from the virus and consolidate the reactivation of the economy,” Puig said. On an encouraging note, he pointed out that the Valencian Community has more trackers and tracers than any other
Spanish region. The health authorities can carry out 14,000 PCR tests daily and analysing wastewater to monitor the coronavirus has been extended to more municipalities. With more medical staff, three auxiliary hospitals and more ICU beds, the Valencian Community is now better prepared to detect the virus, isolate cases, protect the population and attend to those needing hospitalisation, Puig affirmed. “But we can’t allow ourselves to relax. There is no point in ignoring the instructions of the health authorities and experts, because anyone failing through their own carelessness, makes us all fail,” he said.

THE Diputación de Alicante will allocate around €300,000 this year to collaborate with the town halls of the province in carrying out fly and mosquito pest control treatments. A total of 93 towns will benefit from this measure, essential to avoid pests and protect the ecosystem. This plan, which is new to 2020 has been opened to towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants and focuses on the development of disinfection processes in those areas that, due to the special characteristics of their territory, register a greater presence of culicids
(mosquitoes) and simúlidos (black flies). In the Vega Baja region, towns such as Albatera, Algorfa, Benijofar, Dolores and Formentera del Segura, among others, will receive aid. “We have increased the finances available for this service by €100,000 in order to reach those areas where until now no action was taken and to reinforce actions on possible sources of insect problems since these can become a major health problem,” explained the deputy responsible for the area, Miguel Ángel Sánchez.
Raise awareness PILAR DE LA HORADADA Council’s department of Women and Equality has embarked on a campaign to raise awareness among the population about the uses and operation of the 016 number and assure people the town is a safe place to spend the holidays alone or with family. Based on data from the Ministry of Equality, calls to 016 have increased during the health crisis so “it is vital that everyone knows how to act if they witness or are a victim of gender violence.” ‘Si tiras la toalla que sea en la playa’ (If you throw in the towel, let it be on the beach), is an initiative that encourages people to visit Pilar de la Horadada beaches and demonstrate that the town is actively trying to be a town free of gender violence. Plastic project A SCHOOL initiative to reduce the daily use of plastics has led to a European award for a school in Orihuela. The Network of European Eco-Schools has awarded the Hurchillo Public School for its environmental and educational project ‘Desplastifícate’ in which the council’s environmental department participates.
Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, said: “This is the second year we have participated in this important programme which raises awareness among schoolchildren about the importance and necessity of reducing the use of plastic, and if we use it, it should be done in the most environmentally friendly way possible with specific recycling.”

Despite four shows a week, Sherrie still finds time to write for Yours, and together with Dee, created an animated version of Wonderbirds accompanied by a book.

TOTANA in Murcia has been forced back into Phase 1 of the de-escalation after a significant rise in coronavirus cases. The emergency lockdown was ordered in Totana on Thursday, July 23, after 55 people tested positive after attending a late-night music event in the town the previous night. Police roadblocks were set up all around Totana and people who had contact with anyone from the music event are being traced. Emergency measures mean entry and exit into the municipality is now prohibited, its day centres will be closed and visits to the residences will be restricted. Health centres will be closed, except for care related to the pandemic.

IMMIGRANTS: Some tested positive for Covid-19. HUNDREDS of immigrants arrived on the coasts of Murcia over the weekend, some of whom have tested positive for coronavirus. The Guardia Civil and Salvamiento Martimo helped 418 immigrants cross over into Spain’s coasts between Friday, July 24 and Sunday. There were 31 paddle boats arriving at Murcia, most of the migrants are men from Algeria. According to sources from the government delegation, 13 boats arrived with 186 immigrants on board on Friday. Whilst on Saturday, 18 boats ar-
rived with a total of 232 people on board. So far, two of the immigrants have tested positive for coronavirus after PCR tests were carried out and they have both been transferred to a health centre. For this reason, all of the immigrants have been quarantined. The occupants of the boats were transferred to the Escombreras dock (Cartagena), where they were attended to by the Red Cross. These Red Cross workers check the state of health of the hundreds of migrants and provide them with assistance, clothing and feeding.

10 day quarantine QUARANTINE ‘to be cut to 10 days for holidaymakers returning to the UK from Spain’ after backlash from travel firms and businesses. The quarantine period for people arriving from Spain or other countries with high coronavirus levels is at present 14 days. This period could reportedly be cut to 10 days under plans being looked at by ministers as EWN went to press. Returning travellers would need to quarantine for eight days before being tested, under new plans being considered. After that they would only need to remain in quarantine for another two days should they test negative, according to government sources. It is understood that ministers are also thinking of instructing everyone who has returned from Spain since July 23 to get tested. It comes as the government was told to get a grip on summer holiday ‘confusion’ after the Balearic and Canary Islands were added to the list of places where only essential travel should take place. The government is also considering telling everyone who has come into the UK from Spain since July 23, including returning holidaymakers, to take a coronavirus test, the report added. Britain dealt a new blow to Spain on Monday, July 27, by extending guidance advising against

Walking in fear PET owners in Cartagena claim they are walking their dogs “in fear” after finding pieces of meat laced with sharp objects on the ground in areas frequented by people exercising their pets. One resident, María José Pastor, said she went out to walk her dog as normal on Sunday, July 19, when the animal stopped to eat what appeared to be ‘pieces of sausage.’ Pastor told La Opinion de Murcia: “I took it out of his mouth and when I opened the meat I realised that inside there were several metal staples.” She immediately contacted her neighbours, urging them to “start looking for more pieces and prevent any dog in the area from suffering any damage.” Another resident, Joaquín M, added that “this is not the first time this has happened. “A few months ago we found pieces of sausage that contained nails inside. We go out with our dogs “in fear as we don’t know if they will do it again,” said Pastor. Both pet owners live in Calle Sabadell which has a wooded area ‘where it is common to see dogs moving around all day.’ “In our street alone, there are 15 of us

Soaring trade THERE’S a staycation boom as 14 million Brits have been told to stay at home amid Spain’s quarantine bombshell. Widespread cancellations of foreign holidays have been reported as bookings for UK breaks soar amid fears other countries may follow suit with Spain and be axed from the government’s safe travel list. Staycations are now booming again as Brits shun overseas trips amid chaos over the quarantine order imposed on Saturday, July 25, for those returning from Spain. Bookings for UK breaks have soared as holidaymakers fear that other countries including France, Germany and Croatia could soon be axed from the safe travel list also. In another blow to Spain’s tourism industry, the Foreign Office last night advised against all but essential travel to the Balearic and Canary Islands, in line with mainland Spain - despite pleas to exempt tourism hotspots such as Mallorca, Ibiza and Tenerife where infection rates are lower. However, just one person has been fined by police for breaching quaran-tine rules after arriving from overseas, figures from police forces in England and Wales show. Watchdog
groups say that the monitoring of quarantined arrivals is a “sham” and authorities just do not have the manpower to enforce the rules. There was also fury after the government said holidaymakers unable to claim sick pay during the 14-day self-isolation should claim benefits instead. Tourism chiefs slated that decision and regarded it as “outrageous” as potential holidaymakers looking to book for Spain now would be put off altogether. TUC chief Frances O’Grady said: “No one should suffer financially for following official advice to quarantine.” Some 14 million Brits are now said to be playing it safe and choosing a UK break before the schools reopen in September. An overwhelming amount of holidaymakers when asked by travel agents in the UK where they would rather go on holiday to said Spain. Tourism chiefs warned reimposing quarantine would be the “final nail in the coffin” for many in the industry. All hopes are pinned on a quick end to quarantine altogether, otherwise, Spain will take years to recover.

Cases skyrocket Mandatory move AFTER being used for walks, as a mere excuse to leave the house, the rate of animal abandonment in Spain has skyrocketed after lockdown. Ana Mula, a lawyer specialised in animal law and a spokesperson for the Institute for Public Policy on Animal Protection, has insisted that “people fraudulently acquired the animals to be able to go out on the public roads.” More specifically, the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RCSS) calculated that around 5,000 dogs have been abandoned, an average increase of around 50 per cent. These figures allude to the fact that the animal has been “treated as a mere tool to satisfy a need.” This makes abandoning them much easier because they are not seen as a conscious part of your family unit but rather as an object that has satisfied your need. In fact, now after the de-escalation phase and with the arrival of summer, “cases of abandonment are already being detected,” explains Mula.

This is a sad reality backed up by the data provided by the RCSS. According to the organisation, the abandonment of dogs has increased by 25 per cent since the start of the de-escalation. Only at the end of last May - during the first weeks in which mobility restrictions were relaxed across most provinces around 2,000 abandonments were registered in Spain. Furthermore, the fact that
shelters were closed during the quarantine caused people who wanted a pet to turn to online sales. This kept the demand for purchased animals up, further increasing the number of animals in Spain. Mula insists that they are “fraudulent” acquisitions that, in many cases, come from illegal farms where the conditions that the animals are kept in are “terrible.”
IN the latest coronavirus news, Madrid makes masks mandatory and they also want the use of Covid passports throughout the community. The Government of the Community of Madrid has finally made the use of the mask mandatory at all times and in all places. They have also limited groups in social circles to a maximum of 10 people at a time, both indoors and on terraces. Madrid has recommended limiting family gatherings to that same number. In addition, by September, Madrid wants to establish a pioneering policy which includes a ‘Covid passport’ that can be reflected on the health card. This will help to identify all of the individuals who have overcome the disease and are unable to infect or be infected. Lastly, it will limit its nightlife industries, only allowing them to stay open until 1.30 in the
morning. It will also be doubling inspections and increasing the number of trackers from 180 trackers to 360 in this first phase, “although these will be increased if deemed necessary.” This new regulation will be enforced on Thursday. According to the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Ayuso, this protocol has been adopted in order to limit the spread of the virus and to relaunch the economy. The adoption of mandatory masks makes Madrid one of the last regions to enforce this new protocol. Apart from the Canary Islands, almost the whole of Spain has chosen to make masks mandatory at all time. As for tracking the potential cases - according to the Minister of Health, the Community is currently monitoring almost 10,000 people for possible contacts in relation to the 11 outbreaks which are currently active.

Soaring fireball
FIREBALL: Soars over southern Spain.
ON Wednesday, July 22, the detectors of the SMART project saw a fireball soar over southern Spain’s sky at over 220,000 kilometres per hour. The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalucia registered the fireball from astronomical observatories of Sevilla and Calar Alto in Almeria. As reported by the chief investigator of the SMART project, Jose María Madiedo, who is part of the Institute of Astro-
physics of Andalucia (IAACSIC), the fireball was recorded at 3.49am on July 22. The phenomenon occurs when a rock from a comet enters the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 220,000 kilometres per hour. The collision with the atmosphere at this enormous speed caused the rock to become incandescent and generate a fireball that soared at an altitude of about 120 kilometres above the Gulf of
Cadiz; from there it advanced in a north westerly direction, becoming extinct at about 75 kilometres above sea level. The detectors of the SMART project operate within the framework of the Southwest Europe Fireball and Meteor Network (SWEMN), which aims to continuously monitor the sky in order to record and study the impact against the Earth’s atmosphere of rocks from different objects of the Solar System.

Hit and run A DEAD woman and injured teen were left in a ditch after a hit and run scandal in Spain’s Madrid. The horrific crash occurred at kilometre six of the M-404, passing through the town of El Alamo. According to the 112 Emergency services from the Community of Madrid and the Guardia Civil, the 18-year-old girl was been seriously injured. The first warning the emergency services received was a call at 8.15am on Monday, July 27. They were notified of the presence of two bodies left in a ditch on the M404. The medical emergencies team rushed to the area, however, they could only confirm the death of the woman. She had several injuries, compatible with a hit and run, only thought to have hap-

A DOMESTIC cat has become the UK’s first definite case of an animal testing positive for Covid19. “The Chief Veterinary Officer has confirmed that the virus responsible for Covid-19 has been detected in a pet cat in the UK,” the government announced in a statement issued on Monday, July 27. The statement goes on to explain that the infection was confirmed last
Wednesday, July 22 following tests at the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) laboratory in Weybridge. The government reported that this is the first confirmed case of an animal infection with the coronavirus strain in the country, but stressed, “there is no evidence to suggest that the animal was involved in transmission of the disease to its owners or that pets or other domestic animals are able to transmit the virus to people.” The most likely scenario according to the statement is that the cat caught the virus from its owners, who had tested positive for Covid-19. Both the owners and the cat have made full recoveries and no other animals or people living in the home were infected. The statement points out there have been “a very small number of confirmed cases in pets in other countries in Europe, North America and Asia.” But the Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss made it clear that these cases are “very rare.” She also pointed out that infected animals have so far shown only mild clinical signs and have recovered within days. Medical Director at Public Health England Yvonne Doyle echoed Middlemass’s views, saying, the UK case “should not be a cause for alarm.” She reminded the public that the Public Health England general advice on fighting coronavirus is to wash hands regularly, including before and after contact with animals. The UK case has been reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health.

TECHNICAL MASK: Is waterproof and reusable. PORTUGAL has created the first miracle mask against Covid which inactivates the virus. A collaboration between several Portuguese companies and scientific and academic centres has allowed the development of a mask that inactivates the virus that causes Covid-19, endorsed by the João Lobo Antunes Molecular Medicine Institute in Lisbon (iMM). On Saturday, July 25, the project leaders announced that the mask, called MOxATech, has been on sale since April, but its ability to inactivate the virus has only just been confirmed by a series of tests carried out by the iMM. The protective equipment has a coating that neutralises the virus when Covid comes into contact with it. This mask has
been developed thanks to the collaboration between the textile manufacturer Adalberto, the retail company MO, Sonae Fashion, the CITEVE technology centre, iMM and the Universidade do Minho. The virologist of the iMM Pedro Simas, who coordinated the tests, assured that the tests carried out “have shown an effective inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 even after 50 washes, observing a 99 per cent viral reduction after one hour of contact with the tissue.” The mask, developed with a technical fabric, integrates several different layers, which are waterproof and reusable. It boasts of a certification from the French Direction Générale des Entreprises that accredits the mask with particle retention of 96 per cent, even after 50 washes.

Increased bilateral trade AN agreement between Turkey and Spain should result in an increase in bilateral trade from €11 billion to €20 billion according to Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan. The minister said “We can boost joint trade in various sectors such as automotive, clothing, iron and steel, electronic, furniture and food.” She also encouraged Spanish companies to submit proposals with regards to railway projects as they have proven their ability and experience in other countries. In addition, both ministers agreed in a conference call to work together in third party countries.
Spanish Fishing Fleet SPAIN’S fishing fleets don’t just operate in the Mediterranean as there are a number of vessels all over the world, including Seychelles, where they search for big catches of tuna. One company uses West African crew but at the latest change over, 97 out of 207 new crew were tested positive for Covid-19 and their vessels were impounded and used to quarantine the active cases. This has resulted in lower catches and increased medical, travel and transport costs according to a company spokesperson.

THE largest department store chain in Europe, Spain’s El Corte Inglés tradi tionally holds its annual shareholders meeting at the end of August, but brought the date forward to Sunday July 26 with the majority of shareholders attending digi tally. Two major matters to be raised will be a reduction in the dividend to be paid to a total of €37.5 million and a decision to incorporate its subsidiary, clothing brand Sfera into the main compa ny for strategic reasons. There is little likelihood of job losses for the brand which operates 71 stores in
Spain and Portugal and has a number of franchises around the world. Unlike many other Euro pean stores, El Corte Inglés follows a policy of running merged companies both within its department stores as well as leaving them as standalone retail units which include Bricor, Hiper cor, Supercor plus the new Sfera in order to take ad vantage of smaller outlets. Overall profits for the fi nancial year (March 2019 to February 2020) are up by just over 20 per cent and represent the most success ful year of trading since 2010.

Airbus interest rates THE Trump administration has been on the warpath against EU member states giving supposed ‘subsidies’ to Airbus to the detriment of Boeing and has threatened new sanctions by way of im port tariffs. EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan believes that the decision by Airbus to pay higher interest on loans should resolve the situation but has indicated that the European Union is ready to impose its own sanctions if the US does not accept this compromise and reminded America that the EU believes that it subsidises Boeing. was Spain’s turn to take up the rotating presidency of the Luxembourg Declara tion which was initiated in 2015 and seeks to strengthen enterprises that are involved in the social sector in the European Union. This was confirmed by the minister in her speech where she highlighted the importance of the task and be lieved that Toledo would fulfil its role perfectly.

Calorie Count on UK Menus by John Smith THE British Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to attack obesity, not just in c h i l d re n b u t i n a d u l t s a s well. He is reportedly planning on pass ing a law requiring all places that sell food (including takeaways) and em ploy 250 staff or more to display the number of calories in each dish on their menus. It is possible that this will then be extended to included alcoholic drinks
AZORA, a private equity real estate manager, has raised €680 million for the launch of a new fund, Azora European Hotel & Lodging, FCR. It now has €1.5 billion to invest in leisure hotel opportunities across Europe, despite (or perhaps
at some time in the future. The rationale behind this is that statistics suggest that those who are significantly overweight represented 8 per cent of those treated in inten sive care units for Covid19 and this was a much higher percentage than other groups of patients. In addition, it is believed that those eating out consume up to 10 per cent more calories than they would if eating at home, so the de cision to make clear the number of calories in each meal would allow diners to make an informed choice

BUSINESS IN THE Almeria Property Finder, Albox “WE are busier now than before lockdown, and sales are good,” Almeria Property Finder owner Cathie Saunders told EWN. Even during the lockdown period, the agency had plenty of work and sales continued. The only changes as a result of the health crisis have been the social distancing, mask wearing and sanitising procedures, and viewings are now “a little different.” Demand from buyers is currently so buoy-
ant that Cathie’s main concern is having enough new properties on the books to meet that. In fact Cathie puts the boom in business down to the Covid-19 situation. “Buyers are more focused and more determined to find a property than at the beginning of the year. “A lot of people who were on the fence due to Brexit have now had time to think about it and have decided to just go for it.”

Costa del Sol by the demand for both flooring and furniture and from their point of view people are visiting with the intention to buy rather then just to look around. Their biggest problem is obtaining stocks as many of their suppliers are not working at full capacity, but apart from that, they have no reason to complain.

CRAIG LONGSTAFF and his wife Nicola from Fishy Fishy, in Moraira, have a positive take on the situation “Although our terrace has been cut to 50 per cent capacity, allowing only six tables, we have seen a drop from being 50 or 60 per cent down to 20 per cent. However, I don’t think this summer will get back to normal,” said Craig who also pointed out that “It’s not too bad, one change is that Nicola and I have had to go from only working three or four hours a day to now working eight to 10 hours a day. Our staff are now all off ERTE, but down to the only hours we are able to pay them.” When asked about the news of quarantine for UK travellers he said “We haven’t seen the effects of it yet, but friends from other businesses have already had cancellations,” and added, “We will get by as we are a family business, but unfortunately some businesses will not survive.”
Pedro Salvat, Toldos Guardamar THE lockdown had a very significant impact on Toldos Guardamar, the company’s director Pedro Salvat told EWN, especially because a good many of their customers are British, Belgian or other foreign nationalities. The many orders they had before the State of Alarm came into force had to be held on “standby” due to the restrictions. Now however the team is twice as busy as before lockdown. Not that they were idle during the lockdown. In fact far from it. Paid for out of its
own pocket, the company produced face masks, which the team delivered to people’s houses, not only to their customers, but to anyone who got in touch with them. Some 6,000 in all,
completely free of charge. They also took people items like gloves and hydroalcoholic gel. It was the company’s contribution to the fight against Covid-19, Pedro
Costa Blanca South said. Yet another gesture during lockdown was offering anyone working in law enforcement, firefighters and medical staff a whopping 50 per cent discount on all their products. One difference for Toldos Guardamar in the new normal has been the decision to offer the special offers it would normally have run earlier in the year now in the summer months so that customers can take advantage. Their usual top quality service remains the same as ever.
MORE than a month after Spain’s long, and for many tough, State of Alarm came to an end and the lockdown was lifted, the Euro Weekly News has been speaking to businesses to find out how they are getting on in the ‘new normal.’ We wanted to know what is different. How does the situation for businesses of all kinds now compare with how things were going before the Covid-19 pandemic impacted on pretty much every aspect of daily life? Have companies had to make a lot of changes to how they operate, or are things rolling along much as they used to?
Olive Properties, Bedar

BUSINESS for estate agency Olive Properties is different now from February, says company coowner Joanne Desmond, but the current situation seems really positive. “We are having a huge volume of enquiries,” Joanne told EWN. “Obviously not all clients can travel yet. However, things look very promising and clients are keen to get here. We are seeing an increase in people visiting and the demand is high.” In terms of changes which Olive Properties has undergone as a result of the pandemic, again it is all for the good. “We were quieter, but it gave us the time to do the jobs we were too busy to do before,” Joanne said. “We have fine-tuned the business over the last three months and organised things. We feel more efficient as a team as a result. “We did virtual viewings and videos, which resulted in sales during lockdown, and we are still offering this service and will continue to as a new avenue.” Joanna is optimistic about the rest of 2020. “As a business we are now ready for a positive and busy second half of the year. We are experiencing a lot of interest from foreign buyers, and Spanish also. We feel the end of the year will be very busy and will make up for the quieter months we experienced. We are full of energy and already busy!”
Michelle Johnstone Costa del Sol THE last time we spoke with Michelle who with husband Tony operates Ace of Shades, she was a bit worried about the future as there were a number of restrictions of the work that the company could undertake. Now however she says that they are extremely busy thanks to the heat, mosquitoes and sadly some burglaries and they can’t install screens, awnings and shutters quickly enough. There will be fewer holiday home owners arriving from the UK, but Michelle is very optimistic about the future and the fact that there is still a large potential market for the company.

Harris Furnishings, Pedreguer Costa Blanca North JAYNE HARRIS who owns Harris Furnishings, a furniture retail and reupholstering business in Pedreguer with husband Dave, said, “We have been extremely busy since reopening. I think because people have been stuck indoors critiquing their homes so when they could get out they were ready for a change. “Everything here is working fine, we are following health measures which is reassuring to customers as they know that they are in a safe place. Our retail side has been quieter but this is actually the quietest time for that sector each year, so there is not much change,” said Jayne. She added, “I do think that the news over the weekend will affect business as 50 per cent of our customers are people travelling here from the UK who have holiday homes.”

Paul Garrod, Solar Solutions Costa Blanca South Spain “EVERYONE has been affected by the three-month lockdown,” Solar Solutions Spain’s Paul Garrod says, but the main issue for his company after the State of Alarm came to an end was getting hold of stock. The restrictions on transport and movement meant shipping came to a halt. The situation is now getting back to normal, Paul explained, and Solar Solutions Spain is busy and working the same way as before the pandemic. But Paul admits that recent fresh outbreaks of the virus have got him concerned another lockdown could happen. “If there’s a second wave it will be worse than the first,” he believes, adding, “people need to adhere to the rules.”

People were nervous at first but once they realised they were in a

When the State of Alarm came into force there were two weeks when the company wasn’t allowed to operate, but then government authorisation as a transporter of essential items allowed the firm to continue working. The problem, Steve explained, was that while clients’ belongings could be moved, people themselves had to stay put. The result was very crowded Swift Removals’ warehouses until the restrictions were eased. Business is now 80 per cent back to normal, Steve reported. “We’re very lucky. THE name Big M Promotions is synonymous with Martyn Wood who has been promoting live events on the Costa del Sol for many years. Speaking to him about the new normality highlights a problem that has affected so many promoters and entertainers in Spain as basically, his diary which was originally full for the spring and summer of this year is empty. What a load of lily livered, intelligence insulting humbuggery. Listen up, you PC riddled bunch of utter clowns. If some toe rag attacks or blows up a bunch of innocent civilians screaming ‘Allah Akbar, ‘or ‘death to the infidels’ the perpetrator is an Islamist involved in the execution of Jihad. OK? HOMELESS: PC ‘morons’ recommend referring to people living on the streets as ‘outdoor urban dwellers.’ Cabinet holding a meeting to discuss whether the less militant Germans may be offended if we referred to the perpetrators as Nazis? If it quacks like one and walks like one it is one, ok? We’re in a war here and the sooner our pathetic naive leaders come to terms with it, the sooner we may have just a chance of finishing up with our culture and heritage intact. Political Correctness will be the death knoll of the West. Just recently a children’s
entertainer friend of mine was instructed to no longer refer to his audience as Girls and Boys! What the hell does he do when he wants audience participation from different genders? Ask for the ‘not sures’ to come up on stage!? I believe we’ve confused our youngsters quite enough already, without turning their light entertainment into some adult LGBT conflict. I personally think it’s a form of child abuse. If I were at the helm I would seriously be
pursuing some form of prosecution. At this point I’d just like to throw in a few more PC changes recommended by similar morons. Homeless people should be referred to as ‘Outdoor Urban Dwellers.’ Bisexual prostitutes become ‘Equal Opportunity Sex Workers.’ The poor are ‘Economically Marginalised.’ Being drunk is ‘Chemically Inconvenienced.’ Criminals are ‘Behaviorally Challenged.’ Fat people, ‘Metabolic Overachievers.’ Housewives, ‘Domestic Engineers.’ Illegal aliens, ‘Undocumented Migrants.’ And so on. Makes you lose the will don’t it? Excuse me while I go off to get severely chemically inconvenienced! Said my final goodbye to my dear friend Geoffrey Kenion this week. The ceremony was held in the picturesque tranquility of Soller cemetery and was attended by many of his close friends and family. His loving wife Sallyann oversaw the whole occasion with a wonderful dignified serenity and children Simon, Joseph, Rachel and Ella, all delivered moving tributes to their Dad. OUR VIEW Knee jerk reaction
THE weekend brought a shock, sharp turnaround in the decision the UK government made about lifting quarantine measures by an action to reinstate them, leaving British travellers and Spanish businesses reeling. The decision was made due to two days of high numbers of infection across Spain that were mainly seen in Catalonia. As Monday arrived and the UK had firmly put their foot down Spanish authorities reassured that these outbreaks were under control. Just as Brits were becoming accustomed to following the health measures in Spain and their panic began to dissipate, Boris Johnson’s own panic set in and a decision seems to have been made without sufficient time to allow people to even take in what is happening. Sure, he could be making the right decision, he could be protecting his people. If this is the case we should definitely be giving him a virtual pat on the back instead of shooting him down or attacking him. Some might also see an ulterior motive in that the government made the decision to protect themselves from any further derision with the way they handle the virus in the early stages. In making this decision have they added another nail in the coffin for Spain’s tourism industry? If so, will this drag the UK’s travel industry with it? Spain’s Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol were understandably seeing lower numbers than recent years gracing their beaches and bars, but companies had begun to find ways of working round that. Many had sunk the last of their money into remodelling to cover for safety measures in the gamble that it would pay off and lucky for some it had. Maybe we should take a little time and ask that if our governments are just as confused as we are and can make such urgent and overreactive decisions, is there a chance they could easily lift it again before the week is through?

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I have to say that I entirely agree with Kevin Park (Issue 1827) about visitors not bothering about wearing masks or social distancing. They march down the middle of the pavement crowded together and we have to move out of the way, very often into the road. Twice this week, I have gone into the centre of Fuengirola for shopping purposes. I was truly shocked and angered that so many people are simply not taking this virus seriously. Not only young people but older couples and whole families with no protection at all. And unfortunately, KP is quite right: they were all foreign tourists. Nearly all Spanish people, including visitors, were wearing masks and staying apart. This was mid-morning: what on earth must it be like at night when folk have had a few drinks? How many more deaths do they need in order to realise that this virus is still around? We, who live here, have abided by the rules for over three months. We didn’t go out except for essential shopping, we didn’t meet up with friends or family and so many businesses couldn’t survive and went bust. We didn’t go through all that for some uncaring, irresponsible visitors to come along and ruin it all again. Just imagine if the Costa del Sol had to

Defend your right HI Leapy, I am a frequent visitor to Spain (I have an apartment in Fuengirola) and a regular reader of your EWN column. I do not necessarily agree with all that you write, only about 95 per cent of it, but defend your right of freedom of speech to say it. I remember you as a pop singer in my youth (that dates me) but you have excelled yourself as a journalist, controversial at times, but always writing what some people are afraid to even think. I must put you on the same pedestal as Richard Littlejohn of the Daily Mail, both of you reaching a far greater audience than me just talking to my mates. It’s time more people listened to the pair of you and said enough of this BLM, woke or whatever minority group (aided and abetted by rent-a-crowd) is shouting the loudest. There should be a national poll as per the one carried out by EWN re your column. Do the British public want to put up with this rubbish? Keep up the good work, the mouthpiece of the majority of us. Stranded in Spain - ‘Devastated’ Newlywed Couple React to UK Quarantine Rules Both my March and May holidays were cancelled. I didn’t bother booking another one as I knew all this uncertainty would continue. In addition, the health risks either way have yet to be proven. Of course I feel sorry for those affected. However, the writing has been on the wall for some time and people continued to book. I’d leave overseas travel until next year if it is non-essential. The uncertainty is unhealthy. Time to fold and leave the table.

ing so you may find that one of the easiest ways to listen in your home is by using a smart speaker. A market leader is currently selling the latest version of their model for under €40 and earlier versions can be bought for less. The speaker connects by Wifi to your internet router and once set up, you just have to tell it to play Talk Radio Europe. If you have a smart phone or tablet, you download the corresponding App which takes you through the setup process but if you don’t possess one, you can still set this up from their website. They may have well put a photo of me next to that definition in Wikipedia!! I have been so scared of growth and have allowed procrastination to delay my dreams. Last week, I had a complete meltdown. That’s right, a qualified and experienced Mindset Mentor, stood in front of the fridge, with the door wide open, with my head in my hands, I sobbed! I thought it was a delay in mourning the passing of my dog, or the fact, one of my other dogs had killed my favourite stray cat that I fed, but it was neither! It was fear I have been working on the content of my free five days, women only masterclass and full eightweek course for three months and I was scared of releasing it! The
MASTERCLASS: You will be wecomed with open arms. voice in my head had started again... What if no one joined in? What it it was a flop? What if I failed? I am amazing at helping others, but sometimes I forget to take my own advice. It again fell down to the worry of other people’s opinions. I feared being spoken about
negatively, I feared being judged, I wanted to quit! What would quitting achieve? Absolutely nothing! Quitting is the easy option. Quitting is NOT in my dictionary. There was no way on God’s earth that I was going to sit here in 20 years’ time and say to myself, “I wish I had done that!!” It was time to reach out to my trusted best friend, My journal. Put pen to paper and write down my feelings and fears. Next to each fear, I asked the same question that I ask my clients, What physical evidence do I have that makes this fear a reality? The answer... ZERO! There was no evidence at all! I decided it was time to get over myself! I set up the event, added the content and with butterflies in my tummy, I released it. This was it. The moment I feared, yet I faced it come what may. Within 24 hours, 84 women had requested to join and the num-
bers are increasing daily! The voice was wrong, but then I knew that really. I just allowed it to become louder than my beliefs. My whole point to this week’s column is split into two topics: 1. If you are a businesswoman, please do not be afraid to admit to your fears. Share your flaws, you do not need to paint that perfect picture 24/7. There is no such thing as perfect. Be proud of your imperfections as that is what makes you grow. 2. To any woman who is reading this. You’ve got this! Life isn’t a rehearsal, so don’t act as if it is. Achieve that dream, push through your fears and give the big middle finger to anyone who says you can’t! UNMASKED: Hacks to prevent specs steaming and slipping Specsavers Ópticas shares top tips for wearing glasses with face masks FACE MASKS are now as important an item as our keys and wallet when we’re leaving the house, as they must now be worn in all public spaces, even when social distancing can be respected. These new rules require increased mask use, but for glasses wearers they can create unexpected challenges. Between March and May, there was a 640 per cent increase in online searches in Spain for how to tackle the problem of glasses steaming up. That is why Giles Edmonds, Specsavers clinical services director, is sharing his simple advice to keep vision clear while staying safe. Specsavers Ópticas’ top tips when wearing glasses and face masks: 1. Stop slipping by wrapping the string of the face mask

mask will be attached. 2. If you can (and it’s comfortable), pull your mask further up your nose and place glass-

ing up your lenses. 3. Try using a piece of surgical tape to hold your mask in place on the bridge of your nose and give your specs additional grip. Mr Edmonds says: “There are a few difficulties people face when it comes to wearing a face mask while also wearing glasses. One of the most common complaints is that glasses can get steamed up, making it more difficult to see. Wherever possible, particularly for healthcare staff and other key workers, our advice is to wear contact lenses. But we appreciate this is not the best option for everyone. “If that isn’t an option, you need to make sure the face mask fits tightly around your nose and cheeks as this reduces the amount of breath escaping and causing condensation on the lenses.”
Sleep tight ALTHOUGH summer in Spain certainly has many things going for it, when it comes to getting a decent night’s sleep three out of four people in the country have problems according to a survey by INFITO Phytotherapy Investigation Centre. The higher temperatures and longer daylight hours change circadian rhythms within the body and this, European Sleep Research Society member Doctor Rafael del Rio explained, can cause difficulty getting to sleep or

broken nights. When we go to bed our body temperature drops to encourage sleep, and extreme temperatures whether hot or cold can make it harder to get to sleep or wake us up in the night. To avoid this, Del Rio recommends the temperature in the bedroom should be between 18 and 22 ºC with humidity levels of between 50 and 70 per cent. Use air con to cool the room down before bed time but don’t leave it on all night.
Other tips include drinking at least 1.5 litres of water per day to stay hydrated, having dinner two hours before bedtime, taking a cold shower before going to bed, sticking to normal routines and avoiding alcohol and caffeine before bed. Sleeping pills should be avoided if possible; however, meditation, relaxation and breathing techniques and plant-based remedies from the chemist can be useful for those still having trouble sleeping.

ONCE again, Moon World Records is able to launch its Rhapsody of Queen spectacular on a Spanish tour. It’s a new show featuring the greatest songs produced by Queen and Freddie Mercury performed by a cast of international singers, a great rock band and powerful staging. Music is important and that is guaranteed, but what makes this so special is the exceptional staging, fantastic visuals and great sound quality in a show that lasts 160 minutes and will leave the audience exhausted, but exhilarated. There will be two nights at the Teatro Principal Alicante on October 1 and 2 and then a further night at El Batel in Cartagena on October 9 and tickets may be purchased online.
THE city of Alicante is hosting a number of musical events under the heading Magic Nights for the seventh year, this time at the Castillo de Santa Bárbara rather than the original choice of Finca Jardines de Abril as there will be reduced capacity and strict hygiene rules. The recently remodelled Museum of the Reconquest will be visited on Saturday, August 29 and this will be of particular interest for those who enjoy the Moors and Christians Festivals as there will be an explanation of the Reconquest in Orihuela, the legend of the Armengola and the subsequent Teodomiro Pact.

Victor Villegas Auditorium THERE is still a lot of confusion as to whether performances in large enclosed concert halls will go ahead in the near future and this has affected the Murcia Symphony Orchestra which had hoped to start its 2020/2021 season in September. All concerts that they were due to play at the Victor Villegas Auditorium in Murcia City have been suspended although there will be three solo performances as part of the Beethoven celebrations in October, November and December. The venue is currently taking bookings for other events and performers with the next show being on September 5 with tickets costing from €25 to €42. Featured artist will be Amaia Romero whose March concert had to be postponed due to lockdown but she will now be undertaking a 14-date tour to promote her 2019 album which was recorded last year in Argentina and Chile. Amaia as she is more commonly known won the ninth edition of Operación Triunfo and went on to represent Spain alongside Alfred García at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest but finished in 23rd place. Just 21, she has appeared on stage with many wellknown artists including performing a duet at a U2 concert with Bono and although mainly a pop singer, she has also performed in a flamenco style.

It performs in perky enough fashion, with a 172 kmh top speed and reaches the benchmark 100kmh in 11.2 seconds. Not the fastest
of times but on the road it doesn’t feel slow. The same 1.0 litre-sized engine is also available with 115 horsepower/cv and is in my view a better choice. The petrol range is topped by a 1.5 litre unit with 150 horses/cv. There is also a single 1.6 litre diesel engine option. Inside there is plenty of space for driver and front seat passenger and for a rear seat that won’t set adults complaining about legroom. The tailgate lifts to reveal a practical sized luggage area made better with fold-down rear seating. Specification levels are competitive with the lead in model having Bluetooth, auto headlights, a 16.5-centimetre colour touchscreen, cruise control, auto dimming rear view mirror, air conditioning, DAB radio and alloy wheels. So little to complain there. It all adds up to a very competitive, well-built and rather stylish addition to your garage.

THE whole of the next football season in England could be played in front of reduced capacities says a senior government adviser. The first pilots for the return of crowds to sporting events in England took place with a cricket friendly at The Oval on Sunday, July 26, and additional test events are taking place at Edgbaston, the World Snooker Championship and Glorious Goodwood in the next week. Professor Calder said: “We need to know, actually, does it matter if you’re shouting, how far will those droplets spread?” But the Professor, who has chaired the cross-sport working group with government and health officials on the return to sport - has said that events are highly unlikely to have full capacity crowds this year. “I would be very surprised if we could get full stadia back this year,” he said. “Realistically I think it probably will need a vaccine and also a high take-up rate of that vaccine before we can really see full capacity stadia.” He also revealed that experiments are underway to assess whether droplet spread is increased by chanting and singing, and therefore whether there may be a greater risk of coronavirus transmission. “At a football or a rugby match, the fans are going to be shouting and chanting and singing, I hope, and we need to be sure that the people in front of them are as safe as possible.”
