PM Pedro Sanchez is fighting for Spain and has publicly slammed Boris Johnson’s decision to introduce a quarantine for travellers returning to the UK. “The decision to impose a mandatory 14-day quarantine (10 days was being muted at the time of going to press) on travellers entering the UK from Spain and to warn Britons against travelling to the country is an error based on incorrect epidemiological reasoning,” said Sanchez. Speaking on Spanish TV on Monday night, July 27, the PM said much of the country, a hotspot for UK tourists, had a lower infection rate than the UK. Last year, British

Gomez also said that it was easy to understand why there have been so many complaints. “People want to enjoy the beach but we are having to deal with a pandemic, and safety has to come first.”

TOWN HALL: Javea’s mayor and councillors met hospitality industry representatives. OWNERS of businesses linked to the hospitality and leisure industry recently visited Javea Town Hall to discuss health and safety measures. Javea mayor Jose Chulvi, Public Safety councillor Pepa Gisbert and Health councillor Rita Berruti pointed out that many Covid-19 outbreaks in the Valencian Community and elsewhere in Spain were linked to clubs, pubs and discos as well as family gatherings where protection measures were relaxed. “It is essential that business-owners take the situation seriously and play their part in preventing the spread of the virus,” Chulvi said. There could be no repetition of recent inci-

dents that had resulted in town hall fines, the mayor warned, as he called on the local hospitality trade to stem behaviour incompatible with the health crisis that Spain still faces. Police presence and controls has been increased in Javea’s nightlife zones to help prevent overcrowding outside pubs and clubs and to fine those flouting Valencia’s face mask regulations. “We have to go hand-in-hand in combatting Covid-19,” Chulvi said. “Any outbreak would involve procedures that will drag us all down, affecting the local population and the economy,” he declared.

Influx of boat people SEVENTY-NINE migrants reached the Costa Blanca during a 12-hour period between Friday and Saturday last week. They arrived in six different dinghies, presumably launched from a peopletraffickers’ mothership, and were intercepted by the Guardia Civil in Benidorm, Villajoyosa, Moraira, Calpe, Alicante and Santa Pola. The six minors aboard the boats included a baby of nine months but all the children and adults - who claimed to be Algerians - appeared to be in good health, said Red Cross sources. The organisation also carried out PCR coronavirus tests and will transfer the migrants to the field hospital in Alicante City where they will be isolated for two weeks.

Partying does no favours NIGHTLIFE was responsible for the spike in the Valencian Community’s Covid19 cases during the first month of ‘new normality.’ According to official Generalitat figures, cases originating in pubs, clubs and discos account for 10 per cent of the region’s outbreaks, but practically half of its positive cases. There are currently 35 outbreaks in the region, with 22 located in Valencia Province, seven in Alicante and six in Castellon. Fifteen were linked to family gatherings, while four originated in ‘social’ surroundings. Three outbreaks were linked to hospitals, two were classed as ‘imported’ while another in Rotova (Valencia) lacked official details. Thirty-two of the 35 outbreaks led to 207 positive cases while the three others were responsible for 197 contagions. In other words, the 8.5 per cent of the outbreaks caused 48.7 per cent of the region’s positive Covid-19 cases. Gandia was responsible for 114 positive cases, Peñiscola for 59 and Santa Pola for 24. The Generalitat’s Health department responded by closing down Gandia’s nightlife venues and carrying massive PCR tests in the two other municipalities. Epidemiologists explained that tracing contacts at family or social gatherings is relatively easy, but much more complicated in clubs, pubs and discos.

It is almost exactly five years since the line between Calpe and Denia was closed on safety grounds during a €130 million modernisation project that had already made track and signalling improvements as far as Calpe. Renovating the 11 kilometres of track between Calpe and Teulada has now been completed following a €17 million outlay that included installing monitoring systems on the rehabilitated Quisi and Ferrandet viaducts which were built more than a century ago. Javea water re-established A BREAKDOWN at Javea’s desalination plant left some residents without water for days. The problem originated in a leak in the pipe that injects the desalinated water into the general distribution network although municipally-owned water company, Amjasa, delivered water in cistern lorries while repairs were carried out. Talking to the local Spanish media, Javea mayor Jose Chulvi explained that at the height of the breakdown in the supply, essential services were maintained in the most-populated areas. “Only 15 per cent of households were affected,” Chulvi said. The mayor agreed photos of residents lining up to fill buckets from the cistern lorries did not present an image of Javea at its best and apologised to the local population for the inconvenience caused. He also commented that had the fault occurred in November “no-one would have been any the wiser,” while calling for a responsible use of water. “Javea has 1,500 swimming pools and that means brutal water consumption.”

A more than OK evening ALCALALI’S bullring hosted its first summer event with a concert by the renowned OK Band for Jalon Valley Help (JVH). The JVH went to a great deal of trouble ensuring that everyone could have a super night out, even though they had to meet social distancing as well as track and trace requirements. Elaine Horton, JVH president, said she was impressed by the way that more than 150 partygoers followed the conditions set by Alcalali’s mayor and the charity itself. This first fundraising night in these turbulent times raised a desperately-needed €2,400 that is vital if the charity is to keep going. Everyone had a splendid night out and the OK Band were up to their usual high standard although it was a shame that no dancing was allowed. “Let’s hope the next event with the Entertainers at Los Arcos, Pedreguer, will be equally successful,” JVH said. NUDIST BEACH: Now being used by clothed beachgoers. TEXTILES - clothed beachgoers - are invading the Costa Blanca’s nudist beaches. As local authorities control popular beaches to ensure social distancing introduced to stop the spread of Covid-19, beachgoers are looking elsewhere. This is the case with Villajoyosa’s Raco del Conill beach, traditonally a nudist beach. According to the provincial Spanish press, the

number of ‘textiles’ has multiplied on La Vila’s Raco del Conill, with queues of cars waiting to park at the 160-metre wide beach each day. Although nothing prevents clothed beachgoers from using Raco del Conill, there is a long tradition of mutual respect that until now has left it to the nudists while ‘textiles’ went to other nearby coves. No longer. Covid-19 timetables, quotas and prior reservations combined

to encourage beachgoers determined to do their own thing look further afield, even if it means invading a nudist beach.

This will eliminate the existing problems of trying to make a doctor’s appointment and never, apparently, being able to get through. “Members of the public can use the 965 648 604 number to make a doctor’s or nurse’s appointment or to clear up any administration doubt,” Marina Salud said. The service operates Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm, but for emergencies it will be necessary to ring each health centre’s Urgencias number,” the health company added. Denia Hospital’s number to make an appointment or deal with administrative procedures is 966 429 000 from 8am until 8pm, Monday to Friday.

Call for responsibility GENERALITAT president Ximo Puig asked for “extra responsibility” on the part of the public. It was essential to maximise measures to combat the recent spike in Covid-19 cases, Puig said: “Masks, distancing, hygiene, fresh air. For you and for us all. “We are at a crucial moment for our region’s present and future,” the president declared. “The virus is still here, it hasn’t gone,” Puig warned, urging people to return to the same levels of individual responsibility that they demonstrated during the worst moments of the emergency. “In some cases, we have lost our respect for the virus and that is an error we have to put right,” the president stated. He also warned that the regional government would not hesitate to adopt stringent measures if necessary. “We must protect ourselves from the virus and consolidate the reactivation of the economy,” Puig said. On an encouraging note, he pointed out that the Valencian Community has more trackers and tracers than any other Spanish region. The health authorities can carry out 14,000 PCR tests daily and analysing wastewater to monitor the coronavirus has been extended to more municipalities. With more medical staff, three auxiliary hospitals and more ICU beds, the Valencian Community is now better prepared to detect the virus, isolate cases, protect the population and attend to those needing hospitalisation, Puig affirmed. “But we can’t allow ourselves to relax. There is no point in ignoring the instructions of the health authorities and experts, because anyone failing through their own carelessness, makes us all fail,” he said.

World War II airman reaches 100 JOHN RUSSELL was guest of honour at a celebratory lunch organised by the Aircrew Association Costa Blanca for his 100th birthday. John, a former RAF aircrew member and a life member of the Royal Airforces Association (RAFA), now lives in Javea. He was born on July 25 in Sheffield and volunteered for aircrew training in June 1940 when he was just 19. A varied career followed, during which John flew many operations during the Second World War,

including two sorties in support of the famous Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942. He also flew on one of the last, key operational sorties that dropped equipment and supplies to the Resistance, northwest of Cannes, on September 4, 1944. After operations in Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia, supporting the partisans, John celebrated VE Day 1945 in Egypt. Demobilised in 1947, John rejoined the RAF in 1951. After retiring in 1969

THE Covid-19 pandemic is making life extremely difficult for Jalon Valley ARC. This small animal charity covers the Vall de Pop towns and the charity tries to answer calls for assistance with abandoned animals, many of which are kittens. In addition, ARC’s president Matt Curtis-Mason, a well-known Costa Blanca North entertainer, broke his leg just as things were picking up after lockdown. Unable to work for six weeks, this is affecting the financial support he gives to ARC, leaving his wife Sally to do all the animal care and work. Currently ARC is looking after 27 cats and kittens, with another four expected for fostering next week.

Girls and boys together VILLAJOYOSA’S Technical Services is repairing and renovating eight washrooms at the Ermita and Poble Nou schools. Waterpipes, taps, handbasins and lavatories, as well as wall and floor tiles, are being replaced during the €12,000 project. Sexes are no longer separated at the Ermita primary school, and all washrooms are mixed. This was done at the request of the school management, which wishes to introduce “coeducation and coexistence” at all educational levels.

Storm Gloria memento VALENCIA’S regional government, the Generalitat, funded repairs to the underwater sewage outlet off Moraira damaged by Storm Gloria last January. Sewage treated at Teulada-Moraira’s treatment plant (EDAR) is carried far out to sea via pipeline but during periods of torrential rain this also receives excess water from storm drains. A section of damaged pipeline that was discovered floating on the surface, one kilometre offshore once the bad weather had abated, has now been replaced. The €466,105 repairs, which began three months ago concluded at the beginning of the month and are now being tested.

An expensive 1.45-km journey for Maria MARIA, a 65-year-old who lives in Godella (Valencia,) recently received notification of a €601 fine. The sanction was imposed on March 25 when she took food to her daughter, a doctor and the mother of children aged four and

one, who lives in neighbouring Rocafort and works at the Arnau de Vilanova hospital. “She had just come off duty so I decided to take them something to eat,” Maria told Levante newspaper.

As she was about to leave the food, the Local Police stopped her and asked what she was doing out in the street. Her daughter saw what was going on left the house and tried to explain, but to no avail. Maria

must now pay €601 for a ‘serious offence’ and flouting State of Alarm travel restrictions. She intends to pay up promptly to be eligible for a 50 per cent reduction but is indignant at the “lack of understanding and

common sense.” Maria’s daughter has been to Rocafort’s Local Police to complain: “But to top it all they told me I should be grateful they hadn’t fined my mother €1,500 instead,” she seethed.

Man, 88, found

THE Guardia Civil located an 88-year-old Dutch national who had been missing for almost 24 hours from his Jalon home. A friend raised the alarm at 6pm on Friday July 24 after she found that he was not at home and although he had gone out earlier that day, his keys, walker and shopping bags were all there, she told police. The search by led by the Jalon and Calpe Guardia Civil officers, a handler with a sniffer dog, and an Air Service helicopter, lasted for 20 hours before he was found

Don’t stop the music in Teulada-Moraira PUPILS at the Teulada-Moraira music conservatoire will not be charged fees for the State of Alarm period. All parties on the local council voted unani-

mously to waive half of pupils’ March fees and all of April and May’s. Carlos Martinez, Education councillor and also the conservatoire’s director, explained that the town hall wanted to

support music education, while ensuring that pupils would still have access to their lessons, despite the “difficult” economic situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Honour for local JAVEA now has a public space that recalls Vicent de Gracia, famous for crafting the locally-quarried piedra tosca sandstone. The Javea master stonemason (1885-1962) was responsible for the pulpit in Sant Bertomeu parish church, the crest over the entrance to the town hall building, municipal fountains and the Cross whose canopy was recently adapted to comply with Spain’s Historical Memory Law. Fittingly, the Javea Town Hall decided that the little square which houses the Cross and the Loreto fountain will now be known as Plaza del Mestre Tosquer Vicent de Gracia. “We are duty bound to re-encounter people like Vicente de Gracia and draw attention to someone who personified art,” said Javea’s mayor Jose Chulvi at the dedication ceremony. “He was a modest and honest person who, despite the circumstances, used his talents to do extraordinary things.”

ECJ decision opens door to claim against banks even if you have signed an agreement to waive future actions over floor clause The decision of July 9, 2020, by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in the case C452 / 18 has recently been published and opens the possibility to claim in court for the mortgage floor clause, even if some form of amended agreement has been reached with the Bank.

CARLOS BAOS WE CAN HELP YOU AS many of you will know, when the banks began to lose the mortgage floor rates court cases and solid court precedents began to be established, the banks began to contact their clients, offering to change their mortgage loans to fixed rate ones, or even lowering the floor clause, or the minimum interest to pay. Many of these agreements were signed without the advice of a Spanish lawyer and a number of bank clients, who were not legally advised, were not even aware that they had a floor clause, or the thousands of euros that it cost them. In these contracts (novations or modifications of existing mortgage loans), worded as novation contracts or out-of-court agreements, banks re-

quired their clients to renounce the right to take further legal action after signing the agreement. What the ECJ says in this judgement, which is significant because it differs from what was stated by the Spanish Supreme Court, is that: 1. It is possible that a null clause (mortgage floor) may be renewed and modified by means of an agreement between consumer and a bank, only as long as the consumer knew that the clause was null and non-binding and that he freely entered into it and informedly consented its modification. 2. The clauses themselves contained in floor clause modification agreement could be considered abusive, if they are not transparent and have been imposed by the bank. 3. In the case of waivers of legal actions that were contained in these agreements, to determine if they are valid, the information

provided by the bank must be considered as well as its consequences, and must be a waiver on an existing dispute only. 4. The CJEU points out that the waivers of legal actions related to future disagreements are simply abusive and do not bind the consumer. Therefore, if you were affected by a mortgage floor clause rate, and signed an agreement with your bank, to modify your mortgage loan and convert it into a fixed rate loan, or to lower the floor clause, and in the same agreement, you renounced the right to make any later claim against the bank, then in accordance with this ECJ court ruling, you have additional rights. This means that you could claim for the cancellation of the floor clause and the money overpaid, provided that you can prove that the agreement you reached with the bank is abusive because it is not transparent, and if it was not explained to you that the floor clause could be abusive and not applicable, or the legal consequences of the waiver of legal actions, etc. If this is your case, and you want to claim for your mortgage floor clause, even if you have signed an agreement with your bank, contact us (www.whitebaos.com) and we will help you. O N We d n e s d a y, J u l y 22, the detectors of t h e S M A RT p ro j e c t s a w a f i re b a l l s o a r over southern Spain’s sky at over 220,000 kilometres per hour. The Institute of Astrophysics of Andalucia registered the fireball from astronomical observatories of Sevilla and Calar Alto in Almeria. As reported by the chief investigator of the SMART project, Jose María Madiedo, who is part of the Institute of Astro-

physics of Andalucia (IAACSIC), the fireball was recorded at 3.49am on July 22. The phenomenon occurs when a rock from a comet enters the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 220,000 kilometres per hour. The collision with the atmosphere at this enormous speed caused the rock to become incandescent and generate a fireball that soared at an altitude of about 120 kilometres above the Gulf of

Cadiz; from there it advanced in a north westerly direction, becoming extinct at about 75 kilometres above sea level. The detectors of the SMART project operate within the framework of the Southwest Europe Fireball and Meteor Network (SWEMN), which aims to continuously monitor the sky in order to record and study the impact against the Earth’s atmosphere of rocks from different objects of the Solar System.

Benidorm BENIDORM Town Hall’s Social Welfare department promised a 50 per cent increase for the Prestaciones Economicas Individuales (PET) emergency fund. This will help to cover needs that crop up between now and the end of this year. “The Covid-19 health crisis has increased the urgent cases that are covered by this kind of help,” Social Welfare councillor Angela Llorca revealed. “The entire allocation was used up by July, even though this was €75,000 more than we spent in 2019,” she said. “We have made a Budget modification to inject another €230,000 into the PET fund, which is going up from €450,000 to €680,000.” Llorca went on to explain that the extra cash has come from funds set aside for the fourth phase of plans to remodel the old Hogar del Camarada building. “Our priority is assisting vulnerable members of the population,” the councillor said. “We decided to delay the project and dedicate these funds to social purposes as we did when the municipality launched its aid plan to help ease the effects of Covid-19 on local families.”

This time the Atresmedia-Boomerang production company chose the access road to the Sierra Helada national park, prompting Benidorm mayor Toni Perez to comment that this was one of the resort’s most in-demand locations for all types of productions. “It has a road that is closed to traffic with spectacular views of Benidorm from the heart of the national park,” Perez said. Four arrests were made on land but two other crew members who jumped overboard had not been located at the time of writing. The smugglers’ boat was boarded at 3.30am by Customs officers from the Arao patrol boat who discovered that the vessel was loaded with more

than 130 packages of hashish weighing a total of 4.3 tons. Parallel to the Customs’ operation, four people were arrested on land, revealed sources close to the case which, although the hashish haul took place in Calpe, is being handled by a San Javier (Murcia) court.

CALPE Town Hall took on average three to15 days to settle suppliers’ bills during the second quarter of this year. This is one of the best figures since 2014, the town hall’s Audit department announced.

When the economic crisis was at its height this extended to 1,000 days in some cases, although by the third quarter of 2015 this had been reduced to 44 85 days. The local government is complying with govern-

Today’s workshop Neptune Grass meadows focuses on the offshore meadows of Posidonia Oceanica (Neptune Grass) and the seaweed’s vital role in maintaining marine life and protecting Moraira’s beaches. The August workshop is called ‘Let’s stop climate change’ and explains to participants the effects of climate change on the coast’s populated areas and how Posidonia helps to counteract by functioning as a carbon dioxide flow channel.

THE fabulous Sherrie Hewson - hit show Benidorm favourite - took time out of an incredibly busy schedule to talk exclusively to EWN about her passion for Spain, her lockdown experiences and plans for the future. She is a household face having appeared in every popular daytime soap, including Coronation Street, Emmerdale and the relaunch of Crossroads, as well as being part of the Carry On team and a long-standing fixture on Loose Women. But the iconic British sitcom Benidorm - which ran for 10 series - has a special place in her heart. “I love Benidorm, and Alfaz del Pi, Albir and Altea, but I haven’t been back since we finished recording more than two years ago.

“There is literally something for everybody in Benidorm. It’s fantastic for children and is home to one of the best beaches in the world. I also find the history and stories about Benidorm fascinating.” Sherrie’s passion for the resort was shared by her parents who spent a lot of time in Benidorm in the 60’s, and introduced their daughter to Spain’s charms. “I fell in love with Flamenco when I was 14 while on holiday with my mother and brother in Tossa de Mar. They were practising on huge boards on the beach. That was my first love of Spain and Flamenco and have been fascinated ever since.” So much so, that while filming in Benidorm, Sherrie and the

As I left the cubicle, she was still there waiting, she wanted a picture outside too. I have so many funny and fond memories. “I can’t wait to go back. I miss opening the curtains in the morning and saying to myself ‘there’s Spain.’ I love the warmth

It’s a very difficult time in Benidorm at the moment, well everywhere, and we would all be there if we could to support the businesses.” Sherrie had a painful and difficult lockdown herself, losing her beloved brother Brett, and having to spend confinement alone at her home in Lancashire - separated from daughter Keeley Boyd and her grandchildren. “That was so hard, Keeley and I are stuck to each other like

glue. We are always together. If they moved to Australia, I would go too. I hate being apart from them.” “They are the reason I live. I have had a truly long career and I am very grateful for it, but my family are my reason for living.” Sherrie has indeed enjoyed an illustrious career, and is showing no signs of slowing down having embarked on a new project online. Wonderbirds Show is an online chat show which has amassed almost two million views in just 10 weeks, and is hosted by Sherrie and friends Harriet Thorpe, Debbie Arnold and Dee Anderson. Guests have included Paul O’Grady, Gok Wan, Ann Mitchell and Brenda Blethyn. “The idea initially came about as something to do during lockdown,” said Sherrie. “We were talking one day and said ‘let’s do an online show.’ We realised everyone must have been feeling the same as us, lonely, sad and scared. We thought this would be a great way to entertain and include people. “It’s different to Loose Women, which I’ve been doing for 16 years, as we have no restrictions because we are online. We stay away from politics and keep it light and entertaining.” A ‘risque’ version aired on Wednesday July 29. Despite four shows a week, Sherrie still finds time to write for Yours, and together with Dee, created an animated version of Wonderbirds accompanied by a book. “It’s really exciting, and the feedback from the show has been fantastic.” Here’s hoping Sherrie finds time to fit in a visit to her beloved Benidorm - we’d love to have her back!

Increased bilateral trade AN agreement between Turkey and Spain should result in an increase in bilateral trade from €11 billion to €20 billion according to Turkish Trade Minister Ruhsar Pekcan. The minister said “We can boost joint trade in various sectors such as automotive, clothing, iron and steel, electronic, furniture and food.” She also encouraged Spanish companies to submit proposals with regards to railway projects as they have proven their ability and experience in other countries. In addition, both ministers agreed in a conference call to work together in third party countries.

Spanish Fishing Fleet SPAIN’S fishing fleets don’t just operate in the Mediterranean as there are a number of vessels all over the world, including Seychelles, where they search for big catches of tuna. One company uses West African crew but at the latest change over, 97 out of 207 new crew were tested positive for Covid-19 and their vessels were impounded and used to quarantine the active cases. This has resulted in lower catches and increased medical, travel and transport costs according to a company spokesperson.

Undercover Investigation BUSINESSMAN Mike Ashley, owner of the Frasers Group, Sports Direct and Newcastle United is rarely out of the news and this time it is sug­ gested that his company is paying workers at its warehouse less than the minimum wage. Five years ago, The Guardian newspaper undertook an undercov­ er investigation into the warehouse in Shirebrook Mansfield which it is suggested prompted the company to review its working practices and workers did receive an element of back pay.

Now the newspaper has sent in another undercover team and whilst acknowledging that things have got better, there is an allegation that workers there may once again not be paid the legal minimum wage. In what is possibly a tenuous ob­ servation, The Guardian reporter has suggested that because the staff are not paid for their 30­minute breaks during the day and allegedly are not allowed out of the ware­ house during those breaks, it could be that they should receive addi­ tional payment.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

A Frasers Group spokesman told The Guardian that its warehouse workers did not have to be paid for the breaks and that the business had “no rule preventing staff leav­ ing the warehouse during a rest break.” It also acknowledged The Guardian article in a statement to the Stock Exchange saying “We of course take any comments about our workplace conditions very seri­ ously and will investigate them as appropriate, in line with all applica­ ble laws and regulations.”

THE mayor of Toledo, Milagros Tolón welcomed the Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz to the City Hall for the formal installation of Toledo as the European Capital of So­ cial Economy. THE largest department store chain in Europe, Spain’s El Corte Inglés tradi­ tionally holds its annual shareholders meeting at the end of August, but brought the date forward to Sunday July 26 with the majority of shareholders attending digi­ tally. Two major matters to be raised will be a reduction in the dividend to be paid to a total of €37.5 million and a decision to incorporate its subsidiary, clothing brand Sfera into the main compa­ ny for strategic reasons. There is little likelihood of job losses for the brand which operates 71 stores in

Spain and Portugal and has a number of franchises around the world. Unlike many other Euro­ pean stores, El Corte Inglés follows a policy of running merged companies both within its department stores as well as leaving them as standalone retail units which include Bricor, Hiper­ cor, Supercor plus the new Sfera in order to take ad­ vantage of smaller outlets. Overall profits for the fi­ nancial year (March 2019 to February 2020) are up by just over 20 per cent and represent the most success­ ful year of trading since 2010.

Airbus interest rates THE Trump administration has been on the warpath against EU member states giving supposed ‘subsidies’ to Airbus to the detriment of Boeing and has threatened new sanctions by way of im­ port tariffs. EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan believes that the decision by Airbus to pay higher interest on loans should resolve the situation but has indicated that the European Union is ready to impose its own sanctions if the US does not accept this compromise and reminded America that the EU believes that it subsidises Boeing. was Spain’s turn to take up the rotating presidency of the Luxembourg Declara­ tion which was initiated in 2015 and seeks to strengthen enterprises that are involved in the social sector in the European Union. This was confirmed by the minister in her speech where she highlighted the importance of the task and be­ lieved that Toledo would fulfil its role perfectly.

BUSINESS IN THE Almeria Property Finder, Albox “WE are busier now than before lockdown, and sales are good,” Almeria Property Finder owner Cathie Saunders told EWN. Even during the lockdown period, the agency had plenty of work and sales continued. The only changes as a result of the health crisis have been the social distancing, mask wearing and sanitising procedures, and viewings are now “a little different.” Demand from buyers is currently so buoy-

ant that Cathie’s main concern is having enough new properties on the books to meet that. In fact Cathie puts the boom in business down to the Covid-19 situation. “Buyers are more focused and more determined to find a property than at the beginning of the year. “A lot of people who were on the fence due to Brexit have now had time to think about it and have decided to just go for it.”

Costa del Sol by the demand for both flooring and furniture and from their point of view people are visiting with the intention to buy rather then just to look around. CRAIG LONGSTAFF and his wife Nicola from Fishy Fishy, in Moraira, have a positive take on the situation “Although our terrace has been cut to 50 per cent capacity, allowing only six tables, we have seen a drop from being 50 or 60 per cent down to 20 per cent. However, I don’t think this summer will get back to normal,” said Craig who also pointed out that “It’s not too bad, one change is that Nicola and I have had to go from only working three or four hours a day to now working eight to 10 hours a day. Our staff are now all off ERTE, but down to the only hours we are able to pay them.” When asked about the news of quarantine for UK travellers he said “We haven’t seen the effects of it yet, but friends from other businesses have already had cancellations,” and added, “We will get by as we are a family business, but unfortunately some businesses will not survive.”

Pedro Salvat, Toldos Guardamar THE lockdown had a very significant impact on Toldos Guardamar, the company’s director Pedro Salvat told EWN, especially because a good many of their customers are British, Belgian or other foreign nationalities. The many orders they had before the State of Alarm came into force had to be held on “standby” due to the restrictions. Now however the team is twice as busy as before lockdown. Not that they were idle during the lockdown. In fact far from it. Paid for out of its

own pocket, the company produced face masks, which the team delivered to people’s houses, not only to their customers, but to anyone who got in touch with them. Some 6,000 in all,

completely free of charge. They also took people items like gloves and hydroalcoholic gel. It was the company’s contribution to the fight against Covid-19, Pedro

Costa Blanca South said. Yet another gesture during lockdown was offering anyone working in law enforcement, firefighters and medical staff a whopping 50 per cent discount on all their products. One difference for Toldos Guardamar in the new normal has been the decision to offer the special offers it would normally have run earlier in the year now in the summer months so that customers can take advantage. Their usual top quality service remains the same as ever.

MORE than a month after Spain’s long, and for many tough, State of Alarm came to an end and the lockdown was lifted, the Euro Weekly News has been speaking to businesses to find out how they are getting on in the ‘new normal.’ We wanted to know what is different. How does the situation for businesses of all kinds now compare with how things were going before the Covid-19 pandemic impacted on pretty much every aspect of daily life? Have companies had to make a lot of changes to how they operate, or are things rolling along much as they used to?

Olive Properties, Bedar

BUSINESS for estate agency Olive Properties is different now from February, says company coowner Joanne Desmond, but the current situation seems really positive. “We are having a huge volume of enquiries,” Joanne told EWN. “Obviously not all clients can travel yet. However, things look very promising and clients are keen to get here. We are seeing an increase in people visiting and the demand is high.” In terms of changes which Olive Properties has undergone as a result of the pandemic, again it is all for the good. “We were quieter, but it gave us the time to do the jobs we were too busy to do before,” Joanne said. “We have fine-tuned the business over the last three months and organised things. We feel more efficient as a team as a result. “We did virtual viewings and videos, which resulted in sales during lockdown, and we are still offering this service and will continue to as a new avenue.” Joanna is optimistic about the rest of 2020. “As a business we are now ready for a positive and busy second half of the year. We are experiencing a lot of interest from foreign buyers, and Spanish also. We feel the end of the year will be very busy and will make up for the quieter months we experienced. We are full of energy and already busy!”

Michelle Johnstone Costa del Sol THE last time we spoke with Michelle who with husband Tony operates Ace of Shades, she was a bit worried about the future as there were a number of restrictions of the work that the company could undertake. Now however she says that they are extremely busy thanks to the heat, mosquitoes and sadly some burglaries and they can’t install screens, awnings and shutters quickly enough. There will be fewer holiday home owners arriving from the UK, but Michelle is very optimistic about the future and the fact that there is still a large potential market for the company.

Harris Furnishings, Pedreguer Costa Blanca North JAYNE HARRIS who owns Harris Furnishings, a furniture retail and reupholstering business in Pedreguer with husband Dave, said, “We have been extremely busy since reopening. I think because people have been stuck indoors critiquing their homes so when they could get out they were ready for a change. “Everything here is working fine, we are following health measures which is reassuring to customers as they know that they are in a safe place. Our retail side has been quieter but this is actually the quietest time for that sector each year, so there is not much change,” said Jayne. She added, “I do think that the news over the weekend will affect business as 50 per cent of our customers are people travelling here from the UK who have holiday homes.”

Paul Garrod, Solar Solutions Costa Blanca South Spain “EVERYONE has been affected by the three-month lockdown,” Solar Solutions Spain’s Paul Garrod says, but the main issue for his company after the State of Alarm came to an end was getting hold of stock. The restrictions on transport and movement meant shipping came to a halt. The situation is now getting back to normal, Paul explained, and Solar Solutions Spain is busy and working the same way as before the pandemic. But Paul admits that recent fresh outbreaks of the virus have got him concerned another lockdown could happen. “If there’s a second wave it will be worse than the first,” he believes, adding, “people need to adhere to the rules.”

People were nervous at first but once they realised they were in a

Steve Brooks, Swift Removals Costa Blanca South SWIFT REMOVALS was very busy pre-lockdown, the company’s Steve Brooks told EWN. When the State of Alarm came into force there were two weeks when the company wasn’t allowed to operate, but then government authorisation as a transporter of essential items allowed the firm to continue working. The problem, Steve explained, was that while clients’ belongings could be moved, people themselves had to stay put. The result was very crowded Swift Removals’ warehouses until the restrictions were eased. Business is now 80 per cent back to normal, Steve reported. “We’re very lucky. We have a lot of local work, moving people around Spain.” Steve says the recent outbreaks make the future an unknown. “You can’t control the future, so you just have to see what tomorrow brings.”

THE name Big M Promotions is synonymous with Martyn Wood who has been promoting live events on the Costa del Sol for many years. Speaking to him about the new normality highlights a problem that has affected so many promoters and entertainers in Spain as basically, his diary which was originally full for the spring and summer of this year is empty. He has one event, the Celtic Night in the Mijas Pueblo Auditorium on August 8 and then nothing at the moment until November, but he is keeping cheerful and hoping things will get easier soon.

HOMELESS: PC ‘morons’ recommend referring to people living on the streets as ‘outdoor urban dwellers.’ Cabinet holding a meeting to discuss whether the less militant Germans may be offended if we referred to the perpetrators as Nazis? We’re in a war here and the sooner our pathetic naive leaders come to terms with it, the sooner we may have just a chance of finishing up with our culture and heritage intact. Political Correctness will be the death knoll of the West. Just recently a children’s

entertainer friend of mine was instructed to no longer refer to his audience as Girls and Boys! What the hell does he do when he wants audience participation from different genders? Ask for the ‘not sures’ to come up on stage!? I believe we’ve confused our youngsters quite enough already, without turning their light entertainment into some adult LGBT conflict. I personally think it’s a form of child abuse. If I were at the helm I would seriously be

pursuing some form of prosecution. At this point I’d just like to throw in a few more PC changes recommended by similar morons. Homeless people should be referred to as ‘Outdoor Urban Dwellers.’ Bisexual prostitutes become ‘Equal Opportunity Sex Workers.’ The poor are ‘Economically Marginalised.’ Being drunk is ‘Chemically Inconvenienced.’ Criminals are ‘Behaviorally Challenged.’ Fat people, ‘Metabolic Overachievers.’ Housewives, ‘Domestic Engineers.’ Illegal aliens, ‘Undocumented Migrants.’ And so on. Makes you lose the will don’t it? Excuse me while I go off to get severely chemically inconvenienced! Said my final goodbye to my dear friend Geoffrey Kenion this week. The ceremony was held in the picturesque tranquility of Soller cemetery and was attended by many of his close friends and family. His loving wife Sallyann oversaw the whole occasion with a wonderful dignified serenity and children Simon, Joseph, Rachel and Ella, all delivered moving tributes to their Dad. Keep calm, dear, he’s only a drag queen BARRY DUKE DECADES ago a London gay bar staged Sunday afternoon tea dances that attracted a sizeable number of fellas in extravagant frocks who showed how waltzes and tangos and jives REALLY ought to be done. The London gatherings so enthralled me that I asked a friend to come along one Sunday. He reacted as though I’d invited him to superglue his butt to a toilet seat. ‘Noooo!’ he exclaimed. ‘I’m terrified of men in drag.’ What reminded me of those deliciously camp Sunday afternoons was a message I received via Facebook from UK-based friend Alice Williams. She drew my attention to a man I’d never heard of - William Dorsey Swann, a pioneering gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, he was

ACTIVIST MOMMY: Hates drag queens. occurred to me that there has to be a term for an irrational fear of men in women’s clothing. After all, there’s chorophobia (fear of dancing), consecotaleophobia (fear of chopsticks), arachibutyrophobia (fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth), koumpounophobia (fear of buttons) and, most bizarre of all, hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia (fear of the number 666). But nothing to describe drag queens jitters. Maybe, you’re thinking, that’s because people aren’t panicked

by drag queens. Wrong! Many have posted accounts on the Internet of their personal dread of transvestites and transexuals. Virtually all freely admit their fears are irrational. But some people actually detest drag queens with such passion that they actively promote hatred and violence against them. Perhaps the most ghastly of these is deranged American Elizabeth Johnson who uses her ‘Activist Mommy’ blog to identify drag events and exhort fellow Christian sociopaths to disrupt

such gatherings. Covid-19, with its accompanying social distancing rules, have more or less shut the woman up because right now there are no drag events to attack. But once things get back to normal, she will no doubt be back on her soapbox, shrieking about drag queens, gay marriage and all the other things that run contrary to her vile faithbased beliefs. Roll on the day when a cure is found for the brain-destroying virus they call religion.

OUR VIEW Knee jerk reaction

THE weekend brought a shock, sharp turnaround in the decision the UK government made about lifting quarantine measures by an action to reinstate them, leaving British travellers and Spanish businesses reeling. The decision was made due to two days of high numbers of infection across Spain that were mainly seen in Catalonia. As Monday arrived and the UK had firmly put their foot down Spanish authorities reassured that these outbreaks were under control. Just as Brits were becoming accustomed to following the health measures in Spain and their panic began to dissipate, Boris Johnson’s own panic set in and a decision seems to have been made without sufficient time to allow people to even take in what is happening. Sure, he could be making the right decision, he could be protecting his people. If this is the case we should definitely be giving him a virtual pat on the back instead of shooting him down or attacking him. Some might also see an ulterior motive in that the government made the decision to protect themselves from any further derision with the way they handle the virus in the early stages. In making this decision have they added another nail in the coffin for Spain’s tourism industry? If so, will this drag the UK’s travel industry with it? Spain’s Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol were understandably seeing lower numbers than recent years gracing their beaches and bars, but companies had begun to find ways of working round that. Many had sunk the last of their money into remodelling to cover for safety measures in the gamble that it would pay off and lucky for some it had. Maybe we should take a little time and ask that if our governments are just as confused as we are and can make such urgent and overreactive decisions, is there a chance they could easily lift it again before the week is through?

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I have to say that I entirely agree with Kevin Park (Issue 1827) about visitors not bothering about wearing masks or social distancing. They march down the middle of the pavement crowded together and we have to move out of the way, very often into the road. Twice this week, I have gone into the centre of Fuengirola for shopping purposes. I was truly shocked and angered that so many people are simply not taking this virus seriously. Not only young people but older couples and whole families with no protection at all. And unfortunately, KP is quite right: they were all foreign tourists. Nearly all Spanish people, including visitors, were wearing masks and staying apart. This was mid-morning: what on earth must it be like at night when folk have had a few drinks? How many more deaths do they need in order to realise that this virus is still around? We, who live here, have abided by the rules for over three months. We didn’t go out except for essential shopping, we didn’t meet up with friends or family and so many businesses couldn’t survive and went bust. We didn’t go through all that for some uncaring, irresponsible visitors to come along and ruin it all again. Just imagine if the Costa del Sol had to

Defend your right HI Leapy, I am a frequent visitor to Spain (I have an apartment in Fuengirola) and a regular reader of your EWN column. I do not necessarily agree with all that you write, only about 95 per cent of it, but defend your right of freedom of speech to say it. I remember you as a pop singer in my youth (that dates me) but you have excelled yourself as a journalist, controversial at times, but always writing what some people are afraid to even think. I must put you on the same pedestal as Richard Littlejohn of the Daily Mail, both of you reaching a far greater audience than me just talking to my mates. It’s time more people listened to the pair of you and said enough of this BLM, woke or whatever minority group (aided and abetted by rent-a-crowd) is shouting the loudest. I didn’t bother booking another one as I knew all this uncertainty would continue. In addition, the health risks either way have yet to be proven. Of course I feel sorry for those affected. However, the writing has been on the wall for some time and people continued to book. I’d leave overseas travel until next year if it is non-essential. The uncertainty is unhealthy. Time to fold and leave the table.

These new rules require increased mask use, but for glasses wearers they can create unexpected challenges. Between March and May, there was a 640 per cent increase in online searches in Spain for how to tackle the problem of glasses steaming up. That is why Giles Edmonds, Specsavers clinical services director, is sharing his simple advice to keep vision clear while staying safe. Specsavers Ópticas’ top tips when wearing glasses and

face masks: 1. Stop slipping by wrapping the string of the face mask around the sides of your glasses, rather than your ears - just make sure you’re careful when

taking off your glasses as your mask will be attached. 2. If you can (and it’s comfortable), pull your mask further up your nose and place glasses on top. This will help seal the

mask around your nose, stopping the warm air from your breath escaping and steaming up your lenses. 3. Try using a piece of surgical tape to hold your mask in

place on the bridge of your nose and give your specs additional grip. Mr Edmonds says: “There are a few difficulties people face when it comes to wearing a face mask while also wearing glasses. One of the most common complaints is that glasses can get steamed up, making it more difficult to see. Wherever possible, particularly for healthcare staff and other key workers, our advice is to wear contact lenses. But we appreciate this is not the best option for everyone. “If that isn’t an option, you need to make sure the face mask fits tightly around your nose and cheeks as this reduces the amount of breath escaping and causing condensation on the lenses.”

LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp awarded League Managers Association Sir Alex Ferguson Manager of the Year trophy. Klopp guided Liverpool to their first-ever Premier League title and the first title in England’s top flight in 30 years this season, after leading the Reds to a Champions League crown in 2018-19. Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It was thoroughly deserved. The performance level of your team was outstanding. Your personality runs right through the whole club. THE whole of the next football season in England could be played in front of reduced capacities says a senior government adviser. The first pilots for the return of crowds to sporting events in England took place with a cricket friendly at The Oval on Sunday, July 26, and additional test events are taking place at Edgbaston, the World Snooker Championship and Glorious Goodwood in the next week. Professor Calder said: “We need to know, actually, does it matter if you’re shouting, how far will those droplets spread?” But the Professor, who has chaired the cross-sport working group with government and health officials on the return to sport - has said that events are highly unlikely to have full capacity crowds this year. “I would be very surprised if we could get full stadia back this year,” he said. “Realistically I think it probably will need a vaccine and also a high take-up rate of that vaccine before we can really see full capacity stadia.” He also revealed that experiments are underway to assess whether droplet spread is increased by chanting and singing, and therefore whether there may be a greater risk of coronavirus transmission. “At a football or a rugby match, the fans are going to be shouting and chanting and singing, I hope, and we need to be sure that the people in front of them are as safe as possible.”
