MASKS RULE

THE argument about wearing face masks has been settled in the Valencian Community. Like it or not, neither residents nor visitors have a choice because wearing them is obligatory until further notice. As temperatures soar, wearing a face mask is an ordeal for the fit and healthy and although people with respiratory problems are excused, this is a Catch 22 situation as they are the most likely to end up in the ICU if they contract Covid-19. Valencia’s health authorities have at least announced that they need not be worn on terraces if there is no food on the table, on the beach, at swimming pools or in open country-

side when social distancing can be guaranteed. In addition, masks with valves are prohibited. Those questioning their effectiveness were silenced soon after the Valencia Region’s Health chief Ana Barcelo announced the decision to impose masks whether or not social distancing is viable. “Face masks are the only Covid-19 vaccine at present,” declared the regional gover nment’s vice-president Monica Oltra afterwards. And until that vaccine arrives, they are our sole protection.

Cala Baeza closed to swimmers CAMPELLO’S Environment department is c u r re n t l y a n a l y s i n g seawater at Cala Palmeretes and Cala Baeza. Samples will be compared with analyses presented by opposition parties and action taken depending on the results, announced Environment councillor Julio Oca. Although these have yet to arrive, Oca insisted that pollution in samples obtained at Cala Palmeretes by the RED party did not in any case indicate that pollution was caused by sewage. Irate queues on Levante beach BOOKING a space on Benidorm’s Levante beach for the following day now begins at 9am. This applies to the www.benidormbeachsafety.es app and the three seafront kiosks for those booking in person, said Benidorm’s Beaches councillor Monico Gomez. According to Gomez, it is also possible to reserve one of the 1,552 spaces for same day, although not every beachgoer in the lengthening queues on the Levante promenade would agree with this. “This is disgraceful,” a Zaragoza resident complained to the local Spanish media as he waited in the

queue in the Rincon de Loix. Back (almost) to normal STALLS selling shoes, clothing and other items have returned to Altea’s Tuesday market. Things have changed since the State of Alarm, however, this section of the open-air mercadillo has since relocated to the Basseta-Centro car park in central Altea. “Stallholders preferred to put off their return until they could do so in this part of the town,” explained the town hall’s Commerce councillor Miguel de la Hoz.

Alternative Alfaz-Albir route CONSTRUCTION began on the N-322 roundabout giving access to Albir via the Camino Viejo de Altea. “There will be a notable advance for mobility, with another direct link between the town centre and Albir,” said Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques. The €800,000 project will take approximately six months, he revealed when visiting the site near the Magic Robin Hood Holiday Park. Urban Development councillor Toni Such who was also present, together with Technical Services councillor Oscar Perez, explained that the new road will have two four-metre lanes as well as a hard shoulder on either side and a pavement. Procedures and paperwork before work could begin were “very complicated,” Such admitted. Permission was required from the Ministry of Public Works in Madrid and Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion. The town hall also had to compulsorily purchase 9,407 square metres of privately-owned land.Once in use, the new road should reduce traffic flow between the town centre and Albir’s coastal strip by 12 per cent, offering an alternative to the Cami de la Mar and Avenida de l’Albir, the town hall estimates.

Denia’s Beaches councillor Pepe Domenech announced that this summer his department will be distributing 2,000 ashtrays to beachgoing smokers in hopes that they will use these, instead of leaving cigaretteends - which take 10 years to biodegrade - in the sand.

THE Alicante High Court confirmed the decision to shelve further investigation into Kirsty Maxwell’s death. Kirsty, 27 and from Livingstone (West Lothian), was only recently married herself. She had joined a friend’s hen party in Benidorm but died on her first night in the resort after falling from the 10th storey of an apartment building. The room she fell from was not her own, but that of five men from Nottingham whom the provincial

High Court cleared of any wrongdoing. Kirsty had slept on the ninth floor of the Avenida Almeria building after consuming ‘10 alcoholic drinks’ and at 7am went up to the 10th floor where her friends were staying, the Appeals Tribunal concluded. Still affected by the alcohol, she ‘voluntarily’ entered the wrong room, where she was probably frightened to find herself in the presence of five men. Believing her only es-

Tram picks up A TOTAL of 493,004 people used the Tram in June. Not surprisingly, given that the State of Alarm was not lifted until June 21, this was 61.67 per cent lower than during the same period in 2019. Line Two between Luceros in the centre of Alicante City and San Vicente had more passengers than any other line, with 196,568 users. Line Three, which links Luceros with Campello had 83,825 while Line Four between Luceros and Plaza La Coruña had 66,596.

The Line Nine connection between Benidorm and Denia - much of which is covered by bus during modernisation work - was used by 24,053 people. Line Five between Porta del Mar and Plaza La Coruña had the fewest users with 17,984 passengers. Luceros was the most-used station with 72,140 passengers, followed by Mercado (45,364) and San Vicente (29,173) while Benidorm trailed behind in fourth place with 25,031. Friday, June 26, was the Tram’s busiest day on all lines, with a total of 23,653 passengers.

Bull-running with conditions BULL-RUNNING will be different this year. The Valencian Community’s official bulletin, Diari Oficial, announced that from now until December 31 these fiestas must comply with the health and safety regulations brought in to stop the spread of coronavirus. Bull-running is allowed in permanent or temporary bullrings, cordoned-off installations with vertical barriers, tiered seats and the enclosed cadafales where participants take shelter from the bull. All precincts must have an independent entrance and exit, which rules out bous al carrer events which are held in closed-off public streets.

All those present in the lower section of bull-running installations who have direct access to the bullring are regarded as participants and, according to regulations, should be provided with a wristband.

They must wear face masks except when they are actually facing the bull. Spectators occupying tiered seats must wear face masks at all time, with distancing between each person, but

if the seating zone is not clearly defined, the organisers are obliged to mark out personal spaces for each person. Nor may the public move between the seating area and the lower section.

Fines for flouters EVEN before the Generalitat issued the order for blanket use of face masks, Denia’s Local Police fined 68 flouters. Seventeen fines were issued between June 21, when the State of Alarm was lifted, and June 30 in situations where social distancing could not be guaranteed in public. The remaining 51 sanctions were issued between July 1 and July 16. At €100 per fine, this means a €6,800 windfall for Denia Town Gall although Local Police sources explained that face mask flouters were always given a warning first.

The fatal accident occurred at 3pm and the driver of the other vehicle later tested positive for drugs and alcohol. “The town is in shock,” indignant Pinoso mayor Lazaro Azorin said afterwards. “The accident could have been avoided because the speed limit is clearly marked.”

THE regional government’s Director General for Sport, Josep Miquel Moya, recently visited Altea’s remodelled Pelota court at the municipal sports complex. Pelota is the Valencia ballgame and the long, narrow court, resembling a street where it would originally have been played, was in fact already in use months ago. Altea’s Sports councillor Pere Barber explained that Moya’s planned visit to see the results of the Generalitat-funded €90,000 facelift had to be delayed owing to the coronavirus State of Alarm. “The pelota court isn’t being used much at the moment, owing to the health crisis, but

THERE will be no craft stalls this summer on the seafront at Javea port. On a lower scale CALPE Council’s last plenary meeting approved an environmental and territorial strategy plan modifying construction guidelines. This will directly affect the Ifach, La Fossa and El Saladar sectors, explained Calpe’s Urban Development and Territory councillor, Juan Manuel del Pio. The local government intends to “homogenise” Calpe’s urban landscape and prevent high-rise blocks from springing up “sporadically,” Del Pino said. The councillor revealed that thanks to the modifications, a 30-storey building project has been reconverted into two buildings of 15 floors.

Near the port there will now be two buildings with 19 floors instead of a planned tower block with 32, which will blend in with adjoining buildings with 17 or 18 floors, Del Pino added. The six-hour council session also touched on the Baños de la Reina archaeological site, with Del Pino warning that it was no longer viable to compensate the three owners with 15,016 square metres of El Saladar building land. The town hall cannot acquire the Baños de la Reina land valued at €9.5 million on its own, Del Pino said. “The Diputacion, the Generalitat and the central government should pitch in too.”

Hybrids for Campello CAMPELLO Council voted almost unanimously to acquire new patrol cars for the Local Police. Only the RED and Podemos parties voted against the proposal to lease two vehicles which, in line with the town hall’s commitment to the environment and sustainability, will be hybrid. His department was gradually modernising the fleet of Local Police vehicles, Public Safety councillor Rafa Galvañ said. The town hall had opted to spend €98,000 on a fouryear leasing contract as this included maintenance and servicing for vehicles that cover an average 160,000 kilometres each year and whose use was also four years.

Family meet ups TWO new Covid outbreaks have been detected on Costa Blanca, both of which originated from family meet ups. Family meet ups have been the main cause of outbreaks across Spain. One of the outbreaks has occurred in Benidorm with four cases, the other outbreak is in Peñiscola and has three positive cases of the coronavirus. The Ministry of Health has now gotten into contact with people close to the families and retraced their steps to inform them. The outbreak detected in Gandia has slowly grown to encompass a total of 20 new positive cases. Including these three outbreaks, there have been 15 in total across the Valencian Community since June 24. Apart from these cas-

Jihadi probe THE Guardia Civil have arrested a young man in Costa Blanca’s San Vicente del Raspeig (Alicante) for allegedly spreading jihadist propaganda, created by Daesh, t h ro u g h v i d e o g a m e platforms. According to police sources, the detainee developed an intense use of editing and disseminating jihadi content on various internet platforms where chatrooms on weapons and online games stood out.

In his propaganda, he was showing a great affinity for the most violent of terrorist groups, Daesh, also known as ISIS. The terrorist sympathiser managed to infiltrate various forums as an admin and he broadcasted multimedia like videos and informative posters for the creation, use and handling of illegal weapons. The detainee had also accumulated various police records, both from being at home and at school. Sources confirm that the detainee was al-

‘Day without a swimsuit’ or the ‘Optional swimsuit’ comes from the Association for the Development of Naturism. It dates back to 2003 when an agreement was signed with the said entity for the use of the Casa de Campo swimming pool. More specifically, the agreement referred to the period from September 2003 to May 2004 and established a schedule from 11.30 to 14.30 ‘exclusively for this association’ to bathe nude in the pool. The idea was relaunched in the summer of 2010 at the José María Cagigal facilities and in 2015 at the Lago facilities, this time without exclusivity on the part of the association. Similar initiatives have also been carried out in other non-municipal swimming pools in Madrid.

On the beach, this includes parcelled sandbanks, controlled surveillance, limited capacities, and beach vigilantes who ensure beachgoers are complying with the new protocols. However, certain beaches have taken this to a next level. The Alicante Town Hall has banned smoking on all of its beaches and coves. A BBC spokeswoman said: “We remain committed to Andrew Neil’s indepth interviews (as well as the Budget, US Election and other Specials). The Andrew Neil Show will not be returning but we’re in discussions about a new interview series on BBC One. “Politics Live, which is currently only airing on Wednesdays because of the pandemic, will return four days a week from Monday to Thursday. However, Neil is not expected to present the show on a regular basis.” Victoria Derbyshire’s BBC Two programme has also been axed and it was previously announced that the programmes, Newsnight, 5Live and Today would be affected as a part of the slimming down of the political schedule and to make room for programmes aimed at a younger audience. The 70 job cuts announced today come on top of the 450 announced earlier this year, taking the total number of job losses up to 520.

Unwanted visitors BENIDORM Town Hall will pay a specialist firm €22,000 to solve the problems caused by seagulls. Some years back, Benidorm Town Hall was concerned that the town was in danger of being overrun by pigeons, and now it wants to discourage persistent seagulls from nesting in local buildings. They benefited during lockdown when there were fewer people around to disturb them and plans to bring in specialists were held up as the contract could not be put out to tender until the de-escalation process began. “We had it all prepared last March but

the pandemic stopped us,” explained Benidorm’s Environment councillor Monica Gomez. “Seagulls, which are a common sight all along the Costa Blanca, are a difficult species to control, she added. They eat whatever they can find in the street and rubbish dumps as well as the fish discarded by the fishing fleet, all of which facilitates their over-population,” Gomez said. “Seagulls pose no danger to the public,” the councillor stressed. “In fact when attacks have occurred, this was precisely because people got too close to their chicks,” she pointed out.

Phoney phones in Benidorm AN investigation into fake mobile phones that began in Benidorm led to a warehouse in Cartagena (Murcia). Members of the National Police’s Judicial Police - equivalent to Britain’s CID - launched an enquiry after receiving Local Police reports that a Benidorm shop was selling fake branded phones and accessories. Finding that the distributor had delivered the phones and other items without invoices or paperwork, police eventually traced the supplier to Cartagena. Here they found 1,400 fake phones, wireless headphones, USB cables and mobile phone cases. The warehouse manager, the only person involved in the scam, was arrested and later released after being charged with offences against industrial property laws.

Help for the hard-hit ALFAZ Town Hall has allocated €79,172 for the selfemployed and small business owners hit by the Covid-19 crisis. Help is available for

those with social and fiscal residences that were registered in Alfaz on or before March 14, 2020 and whose normal operations were interrupted by

the State of Alarm. Those who continued working during lockdown but whose earnings or turnover were reduced by at least 50 per cent during April and May are also eligible for town hall aid. “This is meant to reactivate the local economy and help our local businesses that have been affected so badly by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Alfaz’s Finance councillor Jose Plaza. The grants will help to pay the rent of premises or cover water and electricity bills, consultancy fees and bank interest amongst other things, Plaza explained. The town hall aid will be available once the announcement and conditions have been published in Alicante Province’s Official Bulletin, and applicants will have 30 days in which to put in a claim.

Fumigation underway in Albir ALFAZ Town Hall began the third phase of its fumigation campaign to rid the town of insects and vermin. Work is continuing throughout this week in the Albir area, on schedule with his department’s habitual programme, announced Urban Development councillor Toni Such. The timetable occasionally varies owing on weather conditions, said Such, who emphasised that these campaigns were “very necessary” at this time of the year to ensure that the town’s sewers were in a good, and hygienic, condition. Mediaeval recycling SANT BERTOMEU, Javea’s 16th century fortress church is giving up old secrets during emergency repairs. Archaeologists found that pottery jars had been used to fill the space between the apse and the dome, a common architectural practice at that time. This is the oldest part of the structure, where work began prior to the arrival of Domingo de Urteaga, who oversaw subsequent construction and was also involved in building the Lonja market in Valencia City. Javea’s municipal archaeologist Joaquim Bolufer explained that the used 14th and 15th century storage jars were probably made in Paterna (Valencia). Broken pieces from larger pots have also been found, including one with a detailed drawing of a mediaeval ship.

Mortgage charge decision GOOD news for many home owners in Spain as the European Court of Justice has ruled that many charges made by banks in respect of the cost of arranging mortgages are abusive and must be stopped. In theory therefore all those who paid such costs are due for refunds and future mortgage costs will in the main be for the banks to cover. There is however one caveat and that is if national law requires the person taking the mortgage to pay the costs, then that is allowed.

Bank borrowing THE Bank of Spain has revealed that Spanish banks borrowed more than €196 billion from the European Central Bank in June which is an 11.6 per cent increase over May and is the highest level of borrowing since November 2013.

Accused of Impropriety AN organisation known as the Good Law Project has raised sufficient public funding to appoint a top firm of London barristers to take action against Michael Gove Minister for the Cabinet Office and Dominic Cummings Chief Adviser to the Prime Minister. What is known as a pre­action proto­ col letter was sent to the pair alleging that there have been irregularities in the placing of government contracts with a small public relations company called Public First. Put simply, the directors of the com­ pany are known to be friends of both

men and indeed they either worked with Cummings or for Gove in the past and they were awarded a contract worth £840,000 (€920,000) to under­ take research work on Covid­19. According to the Guardian newspa­ per, government work is legally re­ quired to be put out for competitive tender to ensure the best qualified com­ pany is appointed, unless there are ex­ ceptional circumstances, such as an un­ foreseen emergency. A fixed­term annuity of 20 years pays tax on YOU AND THE LAW 25 per cent of the IN SPAIN yearly income. If you receive €20,000 each year from your fixed­term annuity, you will be taxed on €5,000. You declare this income in the invest­ ment part of the tax return. For investment income up to €6,000, the tax rate is 19 per cent, so this would draw tax of €950. However, you can deduct your personal minimo vital from your total income. If you are 80 years old, this reduction is €8,100. You can also apply this reduction to your Swedish pen­ sion income. You need a 2018 law book and a Spanish tax advi­ sor.

FINANCE, BUSINESS & LEGAL ATLANTIA, the Italian toll road compa­ ny which owns Spanish equivalent Abertis has been told by the Italian Government that if it wishes to contin­ ue to operate, it will need to give up an Italian subsidiary Autostrade. To make matters worse however, offi­ cials of all of the unions who have staff working for Abertis in Spain have called for a series of strikes on the Spanish mo­ torways during July and August. They argue that as Abertis is not en­ tering into new agreements concerning members’ employment rights and pay, they have no other course of action than to call out all 1,300 employees on strike. The intention is to target four week­ ends at the height of summer where staff will not be collecting tolls on any road managed by Abertis which repre­ sents about half of all of the Spanish toll roads. Nation of whingers

WHAT a sad nation of whingers the UK has become. Imagine trying to govern a bunch of people who do nothing but moan? To me Boris and Co have the most unenviable task o f t r y i n g t o re m a i n p o p u l a r a n d whip up enthusiasm from a population who seem to have almost lost the will to live; but then who can really blame them? Over the years, the indigenous citizens have been swamped with illegal immigrants, torn apart with acts of terrorism, and watched their neighborhoods demolished and razed to the ground. They have experienced faceless skyscraper rehousing with different cultures they don’t understand and been consistently accused of racism. They have seen crimes of violence soar to record levels, observed the demise of free speech and all but lost their own identities. With the country now being throttled by the coronavirus and surrounded by a whole host of ‘experts,’ who deliver up far more answers than questions, is it no wonder the people are desperately seeking out someone to blame? This week however, when the mayor of Leicester at-

tempted to pass the buck and blame the government for his local ‘slave labour’ factories which were deemed responsible for a new ‘spike’ in the Covid-19 pandemic, Boris, in a move that to me reeked of someone heartily sick of being blamed for just about everything, decided to turn over the whole responsibility of dealing with local outbreaks onto the councils themselves. Brilliant. It’s about time both officials and

the citizens, who have grown to expect the ‘nanny state’ to pander to their every whim, grew a pair and began to take responsibility for their own actions. Well done Boris. Now you can blame them when they make a total cock up of it all. Twice I have visited South Africa. The first during apartheid and then some years later after it had been abolished. I remember, during my second visit, laughing to myself about one of the country’s new

directives suggesting that you should no longer request a white coffee but preferably ask for a coffee with milk. How ridiculous is that I thought? Thank God that could never happen in the UK. Wrong! It now appears that some of these insecure trouble makers actually want the word white eliminated from just about everything, Whitehaven, Whitechurch, Snow White; the whole shebang. It doesn’t even end there. In the States they are actually campaigning to change the name of the White House. And do you know something, with the help of the luvvies and appeasing political correct mob; they could one day quite possibly get their way. You honestly couldn’t make it up. No wonder the true British populace never stops moaning. With the lily livered politicians and authorities frightened to do anything in case they ‘offend’ someone, moaning and griping is just about all they’ve have left! Because right now there’s a worldwide epidemic of separation anxiety among dogs, but cats suffer it too. Some of them recognise me and come rushing up for a snog and a cuddle. I recoil and snap: ‘Where are your masks? Have you not heard of social distancing?’ They look hurt and retreat. I feel really bad. Saturday: Mount the scales. Joyfully discover that the boiled egg diet I wrote about last week is having an effect. I’ve shed two pounds in five days. But I won’t be happy until people start calling me Twiglet.

It’s not rocket science! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I HAVE an Amazon account with £100 credit on it. I don’t use the UK site much as if I need anything it’s cheaper to get it delivered from Amazon.es obviously. So I contacted them, which is no easy thing. I’m going to go off at a tangent here. Why is it so difficult to speak to anyone from any large company? It’s almost impossible these days. You get offered so many different ways to contact them. The one that bugs me most is FAQ. Am I really the only person that wants to know about this problem? Then being asked did this help ... no it didn’t ‘cos you didn’t answer my question. Anyway, I did, after many attempts, get a response to my question which was can I transfer my £100 credit to Amazon.es. After all, I sign in with the same email address and password so they know it’s me. They even email me to tell me I’ve logged on to another Amazon site. The answer was no you can’t, end of. I tried to contact them again to ask why, con-

sidering the size of the company and the things they can do including have driverless cars, but I got no further response. Surely it’s not rocket science to let me use my 100 quid on any Amazon site I’m on. I was very pleased that my daughter, Dr S, came to visit for a couple of weeks. When I collected her from the airport there was no cuddle and we both sat in the car with our masks on and for five or six days she didn’t even give her daddy a kiss. We had a fabulous couple of weeks and when she went home on Saturday, Mrs S made her a packed lunch as we were not sure if there would be food available at the airport or on the plane. In her lunch pack was a metal fork and there was a long discussion on the security implications and how would she eat it if they confiscated the ‘weapon.’ Anyway she boarded and sent us a text that no-one at security was interested in her fork, but they did make her take off her sandals and I’m talking about wafer thin almost flip floppy type of things and x-ray them. Nice to see that airport security hasn’t lost its priorities. I could understand if they were crocs. Anybody wearing them should be arrested immediately!

OUR VIEW Social U-turn

THE health crisis has brought with it many different and magnified social changes. As it began and we all faced a new experience of isolation. Locked in our houses away from the world and any chance of infection. During this time neighbours reached out to each other by congregating on their balconies at night to clap the efforts of the health service, groups were created to deliver food to the homeless or helpless and positive actions sprung from a great fear restoring some people’s faith in mankind. We were all desperate to get out of our confines. What happened? Over the last month, this has deteriorated. Upon our release from captivity, things have descended into worldwide mania. Rioting, murders, economic collapse and a U-turn into negativity. Facebook and Twitter are full of personal attacks and arguments with people who are really not educated enough in how to handle medical, human rights or economic matters. Sure, we can all have an opinion but if we know that we ourselves do not know all the facts, shouldn’t we allow others to have theirs too. The world is turning ugly. People are beginning to retreat back to their houses, why? If they are to leave their houses they are to follow certain restrictions that make them uncomfortable, like wearing a mask, standing in queues two metres apart or not being able to enjoy other people’s company. Maybe they will be caught in a riot, maybe somebody else will not be following health measures making them feel threatened. Is there a happy medium? Should people be allowed to make their own choices? The wearing of face masks is such an all-consuming topic just now but nobody has the power to challenge the government’s decision on the mandatory measures concerning these. WHO is sitting on the fence, even though their official statement shows that these masks can be more dangerous for certain members of the public. The main thing we need to focus on is that we cannot get through this crisis alone. Together we are stronger. Tearing each other apart will not get us any further forward. A time of global weakness is not the time to tackle all the world’s problems at once. Remember, divided we stand, together we fall.

DEAR Euro Weekly, This most unfortunate tale started on Wednesday morning at about 09.15 when I rushed into Ferreteria Lopez on Mojacar beach for some urgent (it always is) plumbing stuff. I was then confronted by a gent who, rightfully, but very gruffly, asked me ‘where is your face mask,’ which I had, in the rush, completely forgotten to wear, although it sits ready to use, on my car’s passenger seat. ‘I forgot’ I replied, which was then met with a stream of verbal abuse, followed by, it beggars belief, physically attacking me with a one-inch connector hose that he grabbed from the nearby display, all the while proclaiming he was ‘English.’ I raised my arm in defence, took two steps back, in trying to defuse the situation. Beyond belief DEAR Euro Weekly, I live with a person (platonic) who is a Cuban transexual, born a man and known as Samanta she had her unemployment benefit stopped as her passport is out of date. Before she could renew, as not many unemployed have €215 to stay as a man or over €400 to change sex lying about, she suffered a serious life-threatening stroke culminating in three months in hospital. She has been home nine days and is wheelchair-bound, needs constant care and is now being refused both benefit and Cruz Roja food parcels as her padrón are out of date. Add to this my incredible story of unemployment and lack of benefits, it is clear to me Spain is ignoring both European law and human rights. I am disgusted beyond belief at the treatment she has had but how can you send someone home with no medicine, no food or money in the house and not knowing if there was even anyone to help with basic needs, never mind a professional carer which she now gets for one hour a day Monday to Friday. You say party. I say for sure! GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IT’S no secret that I like to part y. I n f a c t , I m a d e a c a r e e r out of it. Once upon a time, I was known to attend up to four or five parties per night, stopping by each to air-kiss and be photographed, before moving on to the next, with the help of my ever smiling, and patient chauffeur, Chris. Usually landing in whatever nightclub was the hottest ticket in town, by 2am. I must say, it’s a time that remains pretty much a b l u r, b u t a l o n g t h e w a y I m a d e some great friends. An era that was certainly showered with way too many cocktails. Most times the only way to recall where I’d been and with whom, was to pick up magazines like Tatler, or read the social columns of newspapers. As 2020 unfolded, I made a concious decision to get more sleep and stay away from the busy social scene of Marbella. Little did I know, that the universe had a plan in place to ensure none of us could sip martinis a t s t y l i s h p a r t i e s . We w e r e u n able to even go to a local bar for a glass of wine. As I’ve said b e f o r e , w h i l e M a rc h r o l l e d i n t o April, and on to May, I stared at my diary and saw it filled with cancelled events and special occasions. The only for m of entertainment on offer - Netflix and chill. And I don’t mean the fun kind of chill, I mean stay home and accept it, while binge watching shows that did little to light my fire. Anyhow, the first party I was able to attend post lockdown, was worth the wait. Famed interior designer, and my NBF, Nezha Kanouni, invited a select group of Marbella’s finest, to the opening of her latest store, on the Golden Mile. I’ve always been a lover of interior design, so to meet someone as cool, and terminally chic as Nehza was fantastic. Her taste is impeccable,

PARTY TIME: Catching up with old friends. and while I didn’t really have a chance to check out everything, due to great conversations with old friends and a whole lot of air-kissing, I have an appointment to retur n to select certain pieces for my home. The party gave me the chance to meet some really great new friends from Marbella, as well as catching up with one of my oldest pals, the ever stunning and effervescent Virginia Macari. We’ve been friends for too long to recall, but have been living our lives via WhatsApp for the last few months. The party moved on to the super chic, Mamzel for supper and drinks. If you haven’t already visited this stunning venue nestled in the hills, I suggest you do so pronto. Nezha is responsible for the design of the restaurant, and it is of course, epic. A triumph! It’s the first time in months that I danced and laughed, and possibly drank too much wine. But the slight headache the following morning was worth it. A night that began with a Negroni at the Marbella Club and ended with a swim in my pool at 3am. It certainly feels more like the Marbella I’ve loved for many years.

Benidorm Summer Nights THERE is a series of musical nights at the Julio Iglesias auditorium in Benidorm with some top Spanish musicians and bands playing. Tonight (Thursday July 23) it’s the turn of Spanish/Lebanese violinist Ara Malikian who returns to the Costa Blanca to play his hugely popular, yet culturally diverse blend of music. He can’t be pigeonholed as his musical tastes range from Classical to Flamenco through to Rock and he has performed with numerous international orchestras and names including Sting. Tickets cost from €38 online. On Saturday July 25, the auditorium sees an acoustic session from Coque Mala, former frontman with Los Ronaldos and now well-regarded as an actor although he has released nine solo albums over the years. Tickets are for tables of three or four and cost from cost from €70 to €104 plus booking fee. There is a month’s wait until August 25 when it’s time for rock music as New Wave band from Madrid, Los Secretos make an acoustic stop as they celebrate 40 years in

the business. Currently they are concentrating on a softer sound which pays tribute to many of their influences from the UK and US music scenes and table tickets cost from €98 to €126. Finally, on August 29, as part of their nationwide acoustic tour Amaral will be entertaining in their inimitable way. Former drummer and now singer Eva Amaral and guitarist Juan Aguirre met in 1992 in Zaragoza and soon after this meeting formed the band that went on to become one of the biggest selling groups in Spain with their unusual mix of pop, rock and folk music. Tickets for tables at this concert cost from €108 to €144 and as with all other concerts there will be additional booking fees to pay. There will be social distancing rules in place and a need to arrive with masks and even the performers are acting in accordance with the new normal by not having large road crews which is why they have changed their acts to allow for acoustic performances. IT is very difficult to know what will happen in the next few months but some entertainment organisations such as the Benidorm Palace are planning long term and have already announced that on Sunday April 18, 2021, they will host an evening with the Manfreds. Manfred Mann was the stage name of a South African organist who put together a band of the same name which had a

huge number of hit singles during the 60’s and having got together again to celebrate a birthday, they decided in 1991 (without the Mann himself) to go back on the road. Original Manfred Mann members Paul Jones, Mike Hugg and Tom McGuinness, and former member Mike d’Abo, are joined by Rob Townsend, formerly of Family, on drums, Marcus Cliffe on bass and Simon Currie on

saxophone and flute, as the latest new line-up of the group. The Manfreds will be performing many of their hits, including Do Wah Diddy Diddy, one of the most popular and instantly recognisable songs of the 60’s, and still the biggest audience pleaser at their concerts, along with a mix of jazz and blues covers and tracks from their individual solo albums. Tickets are available from the Benidorm Palace box office at €30 and there will be support act with a Bay City Rollers tribute band. Other events planned for 2020 (subject to Covid19 rules) include The Chicago Blues Brothers show on October 11, the annual Elvis Fiesta on November 1 and the Magic of Motown, November 22.

ON December 31 last year, Chinese media reported for the first time on an outbreak of viral pneumonia in the city of Wuhan. Seven months on, how dramatically Covid-19 has changed the world! And now up pops David Cameron, claiming that the World Health Organisation doesn’t work and proposing a new body to sound the alar m about pandemics earlier. It’s a good observation, even if his pro-

posed solution - the new ‘Global Virus Surveillance Organisation’ - is just another name for the same organisation. It wouldn’t work, because it would be dogged by the same institutional failures as the UN, a body so immersed in cultural and moral relativism that it sees nothing amiss with handing a country like Saudi Arabia a key human rights role. For many, the WHO is already in the pocket of China, as would be the proposed GVSO. But didn’t the UK have an early warning in the way that the outbreak began in China

and then travelled to Italy? The fact that the UK took the decision to do nothing until it had already spread throughout the country was why there were so many fatalities compared with most of Europe and the rest of the world. Too slow and completely unprepared for testing, tracking and PPE. Those that haven’t performed better than the UK (especially the US and Brazil) have come off worse since they decided to take minimal action for purely economic reasons. It’s not another global body that’s called for. It’s a hyper-

efficient UK gover nment and a WHO that isn’t afraid of upsetting the status quo. But all the best, Dave, in getting the international community to collaborate, on anything. Fiat Tipo S-Design ROAD TEST by Mark Slack Y O U d o n ’t s e e m a n y Tipos running around in a Fiat landscape dominated by the smaller and much more chic 500. The Tipo occupies the other end of the Fiat spectrum: it packs lots of goodies into a spacious and practical car where any hint of bling is resisted in pursuit of value for money. So, you can’t escape solid and shiny black plastic in the cabin, from dash top to door panels. You need to dig deeper to find the Tipo’s stronger points, of which there are several, with standard equipment high on the list. My UK specification test model - the 1.4 T-Jet S-Design five-door - is priced at

€21,550 and comes with 18 inch alloy wheels, upholstery in a mix of fabric and leather, dark tinted windows and xenon headlights, along with automatic climate control and satellite navigation. Add-in cruise control, electric windows all round, DAB radio and Bluetooth, remote central locking and autonomous emergency braking, rear view camera and electric lumbar support for the driver’s seat and this is a well equipped car. Power comes from a 1.4-litre petrol engine

that takes the T ipo to the benchmark 100 km/h in just over 9.5 seconds while returning 8.2 litres per 100 km. The range offers a slightly less powerful petrol engine and a diesel option. Body styles encompass hatchback, saloon and estate. The range in Spain starts from €16,100 or just €10,306, with various promotions on offer, for the lead in Easy model. It also does a decent job of enjoying a corner or two, although at the expense of a ride that only really settles on the smoothest of road surfaces. The Tipo is the kind of car for drivers who want sensible, comfortable and practical daily transport and there is nothing wrong with that, and the Tipo fits the bill perfectly.
