WHILST there has been mixed opinion concerning the decision to make people wear face masks in Andalucia when in public, it has to be recognised that the authorities are taking what they believe to be the correct action i n o rd e r t o a v o i d a s i g n i f i c a n t i n c re a s e i n Covid-19 infection. Spanish residents on the Costa del Sol appeared to be more prepared to wear masks from the outset than many expatriates and some organisations involved with hospitality feared that British tourists would be put off by the need to wear masks. As more flights open up (the latest being the reintroduction of easyJet to Gibraltar from Manchester and Gatwick) holidaymakers and second home owners are arriving from the UK and the fact that England will join Scotland in enforcing the wearing of masks in shops from July 24 can only prepare visitors for the requirement on the Costa del Sol. History shows that people adapt and this is very

much the case here along the coast as businesses, hotels, restaurants and places of entertainment continue to open or extend their trading hours. Councils are joining in by ensuring that beaches are clean and welcoming (even though there are limits on capacity) and are quickly arranging for different forms of entertainment to be available either free or at low price. We can’t say we have never had it so good, but we can say things are certainly getting better.

Masks at All Times in Andalucia a mask when practising sports outside, nor when the use of a mask can be counterproductive.
WEDNESDAY, July 15 saw the the new law which has been decreed by the President of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno, enforcing everybody aged six or above to wear a mask at all times
The new policy will ensure that masks be worn at all times when using public spaces, even if the 1.5-metre social distance can be upheld, and even if you are outdoors or indoors. • If you are caught breaking this new regulation you may face fines of up to €100. • This rule is only for individuals aged six or older and will not include people with respiratory distress or illness that may be aggravated by the use of masks. However, you must have medical proof to justify this circumstance. BEACH AND POOL • The masks will be mandatory when taking walks on the beach, however, when you are sat with your social group you will not be forced to wear it, as long as you maintain the 1.5-metre safety distance.
RESTAURANTS AND BARS • In restaurants this rule will be exempt when eating, drinking or smoking for example on a bar terrace. If you are sat at your table with your family or nucleus of friends, you will not have to wear this either. If you are sat by yourself then the same applies you do not have to wear the mask.
AVOID FINES: Residents must remember when travelling, the laws can change. • If you are sat by yourself then the same applies, you do not have to wear the mask. • Furthermore, you do not have to wear a mask when swimming. For example, on your walk from the beach to your car, your mask must be on. • In terms of mask use at the swim-

ACTING in response to a number of requests from residents, the Fuengirola Council has improved the safety of its dog beach by Sohail Castle according to the councillor for Beaches, Javier Hidalgo. Not only are fences being extended along the beach, but a new wooden double gate has been installed to stop small dogs especially from escaping through the open access if let off the lead and this is important as the beach does have a road close by. Fuengirola Council which was recognised as a dog friendly destination by pet organisation TravelGuau has also recently expanded the dog beach by more than 50 per cent to give dogs a massive 3,400 square metres in which to exercise.

Benalmadena on BBC SUE ASPEY, the owner of British restaurant The Wigan Bar in Benalmadena, appeared on BBC Breakfast on July 9, in a live interview to welcome British tourists to the Costa del Sol. Sue who has lived here for 20 years explained to hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt about how safe she feels on the coast. “I believe it’s perfectly safe, we all have our families, we don’t want to have Covid here for any longer, so all the bars and restaurants are sanitising. Somebody comes onto the terrace or into the building and they have to use the sanitiser immediately,” said Sue,

However, just as they were celebrating a successful year Spain’s lockdown kicked in. But owners Lynda Niel and Andy Humble were not about to sit back and watch their business collapse. The couple began offering deliveries, and as many as 50 were being ordered every day. Lynda told Euro Weekly News that “Our Bensons Balti Boxes were a massive hit as customers found they could not find anywhere to get a curry locally. These deliveries kept the business alive.” She went on to point out that, “On Monday, July 10, it will be my 50th birthday and Bensons want to show their gratitude to the com-

easyJet returns to Gibraltar IT has just been announced that easyJet will resume limited flights between Gibraltar, London Gatwick and Manchester. The Manchester flights will initially be on Mondays and Fridays with the first arrival being on July 20. The London Gatwick flights are scheduled for Sundays and Thursdays with this service commencing on July 25. The Gibraltar government has welcomed this news and looks forward to an increase in the number of flights and destinations in the coming months.
No mask, No concert SPANISH Reggaeton artist Omar Montes’ concert due at the Marenostrum Castle Park in Fuengirola, was cancelled after the singer and his companions ignored requests to wear masks while attending a public event. Montes and his entourage were gifting a food donation to the local food bank and were warned that they were required to wear the compulsory face coverings, but they ignored the request and entered the public space without one. The event organisers have claimed that faced with the artist’s irresponsible behaviour and the “dangerous example being set,” they saw it was their “moral duty” to cancel the concert.

Leapy Lee Triumphs in Readers’ Poll DURING the time of lockdown here in Spain and for a short period after, it seemed that the expatriate community were revelling in the concept of a new normal in which neighbours helped and supported each other and joined each other on balconies to applaud the fantastic work of healthcare professionals. However, slowly but surely, as people have spent more time in isolation behind their keyboards and screens, there appears to be an insidious change. On social media, there seems to be a great deal of rather pointless arguments and sniping when people disagree with one opinion or another. It now seems that it’s not just confined to social media as recent defamatory comments made in other newspapers are a prime example of this trend. This has spurred Euro Weekly News on to take a serious look at what we allow to
appear in print. One important question we were forced to ask ourselves concerned long time columnist Leapy Lee and the opinion on whether he says what our readers think or is a reactionary voice of an outdated past.
Euro Weekly, therefore, decided to give our valued readers their say and created a reader’s poll simply asking whether it was time for Leapy to move on or let him have his say. The results were frankly staggering, with a massive
74 per cent approval rating from readers keeping the faith with our long-time controversial columnist. Leapy is his own man, with very strong opinions about a number of things, and although he has lived in Mallorca for several
years, he has never lost his affection for the United Kingdom and this is why he feels so strongly about the fact that it appears to have changed so much over the last few decades. In his younger days he used to spend a lot of time
in Ladbroke Grove during London’s swinging 60s and was a lover of the new music coming out of such clubs as the infamous Mangrove, he had many West Indian friends and joined in at the very first Notting Hill Carnival, which was a melting pot of London’s many cultures. He also enjoyed an eightyear stint in Saudi Arabia which he looks back on with great pleasure and insists he has no problems with immigration or Islam but absolutely can’t stand what he sees as the lack of gratitude and intent to assimilate once a small percentage of first and second-generation immigrants arrive in the UK. Leapy Lee may be Marmite to many but his weekly observations are not likely to either bring the western world to its knees nor inspire a worldwide revolution. Therefore, thanks to you. our readers, Leapy is here to stay!

CHAMP: In Puerto Banus. BRITISH heavyweight boxing world champion is spending a few days in Marbella where he has opened a brand-new shop in Puerto Banus. Known as The Hyde Store The Concept, its very much an urban themed shop and he has teamed up with local entrepreneur Haitham Osman to sell a collection of shoes to the jet set who visit Banus. He has been seen enjoying life in Banus and was also a visitor to nearby Opium Beach in Marbella where he strolled around the club, speaking to fans and posing for selfies.Some Spanish press were negative in their reports as the boxer was not wearing a mask and did not appear able to enforce social distancing because so many people wanted to see him as it was his first visit to the city since 2015. When he returns to the UK, it will be time for his camp negotiates the next defence of his titles, probably against Tyson Fury later this year or early next with the likely venue being Saudi Arabia.

AS restaurants along the coast try to recoup some of their losses caused by the lockdown, lowlife thieves with no thought for anyone but themselves are making it just that bit more difficult. This time the victim was the Beach House Restaurant in Elviria, when an attempt was made to steal
a large number of sun loungers from outside the restaurant. Thanks to the Beach House on-site security guard and police who he was able to alert, the attempt was cut short but not before the thieves managed to make off with a number of the loungers.

The majority of people want to see the economy continue to recover and it is only a few ‘bad apples’ with no social conscience who undertake this kind of anti-social behaviour.

New pergolas AFTER receiving a number of requests from residents, many of them elderly, the Malaga City Council is in the process of installing 50 new pergolas along a stretch of the Paseo Maritimo de Antonio Banderas in the area known as Carretera de Cadiz. With the height of summer approaching, the shade given by these pergolas will be very welcome to those walking along the Paseo and this action follows the introduction of new stone benches which are specially treated to withstand the elements.

World Food Trucks Underwater obstacle AFTER a member of the public alerted the authorities to the fact that a large metal container was buried in shallow waters near the beach of Las Chapas in Marbella, the fire brigade were called in.
Five members of the Marbella Bomberos arrived and using an inflatable boat, a pump and beach tractor tackled the problem of removing the obstacle which was potentially dangerous for bathers.
Divers proceeded to remove sand from the area with a pressure hose and placed a sling around the container to move it to the beach. Once ashore, they were able to safely remove it.

ONCE again, the Boulevard in San Pedro Alcantara will host the Flavours of the World Food Truck extravaganza from Thursday July 16 to Sunday July 19. Entry is free and the food will be served from six different trucks from 7pm each evening with a choice of Cuban cuisine, Wurst, Burgers, Mexican food, Argentinian empanadas and fried chicken. It’s not just food as there will be music each evening, but there will be limited capacity and of course security in order to ensure proper hygiene and social distancing.

THERE was a distinguished visitor to Torremolinos as Secretar y of State for Tourism, Isabel Oliver toured the town to see all that was being done to encourage the return of tourism. Already a major destination for LGTB holidaymakers, it is also family friendly and has just received a number of
awards for the quality of its beaches and the Secretary of State helped to raise the Blue Flag at Los Alamos beach. In addition, the town has received four Q for Quality Awards and according to Mayor JosĂŠ Ortiz is doing all that it can to assist those in the hospitality trade and retailers by encouraging visitors from overseas.

THOUSANDS OF BRITISH EXPATS to receive new residency status S TA R T I N G M o n d a y July 6, 2020, the Directorate General of Migration and the National Police will issue - upon application - a new residency card and, with it, a new residency status s p e c i f i c a l l y c re a t e d pursuant to the Withdrawal Agreement (Part Two), published jointly by the EU and the UK on November 14, 2018. This new residency status sits in between the standard EU-citizens status and the non-EU citizens status and will have its own terms and conditions, in particular in respect to duration of the residency cards (and notably the introduction of a photo on the card). These are the most important points to consider: • UK nationals residents in Spain prior to December 31, 2020 will have the rights to residency, freedom of movement and Social Security as recognised in the W ithdrawal Agreement. Applicants for residency after this

will submit their applications at the Police Station, receiving a permanent 10-year residency card. • Applicants who have been residents for a period above five years but do not have a permanent residency certificate, will submit their applications at the Police Station, receiving a permanent 10-year residency card. • Applicants who have been residents for a period under five years but do have a residency certificate, will submit their applications at the Police Station, receiving a ‘temporary’ five-year residency card. • Applicants who do not have a residency certificate will submit their applications initially at the Foreigners Office and once approved, they will need to request the issuance of their fiveyear validity cards at the Police Station. • UK nationals arriving in Spain after the end date of the transition period (December 31, 2020), will have three months to apply for residency. Where not, the authorities reserve their right to grant extra time to submit the application. • Temporary or extended absences from Spain will not affect the rights under the residency cards.

1 Billion Green Revolution Plan! THE health crisis resulting from the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in global unprecedented economic and social impact. However, there are regions like Andalucia, that want a recovery which also respects the green criteria set by the United Nations in its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the objective of the European Union to achieve a climate-neutral Europe by 2050. The whole of the region will benefit from the plan, thousands will be pulled out of unemployment but most of all hope will be spread across Andalucia - the plan is a vision for the future and now we have one.

Pub Landlord takes measures to the extreme! SOME of the most difficult places to keep a safe distance are the places we want to frequent the most, theatres, cinemas, family gatherings, and of course the big one, the Pub. Most bars and restaurants have put into place protocols to attempt to keep the punters at a safe distance from the staff and each other by marking out the floor into zones, or spreading the tables out more, some have even gone so far as to put up actual plastic barriers on and around the tables! But there is one man who has taken this to what must be called ‘extreme’ measures. Pub Landlord John McFadden is the landlord of the Starr Inn, in the lovely town of St Just, in Cor nwall and he has his own rather unique way of keeping the punters from getting too close to the

tric fence! John was interviewed on America’s CNN network and he told them: “To protect staff, myself and my customers you
have to put in the metre(distancing rule in the UK), rule,” he said. McFadden said he wanted “to put some rope, or chain”
to make sure customers kept back from staff at the bar but couldn’t find suitable equipment. “I thought, this is not going to keep them back,” he said. So instead, he opted for the fence to see “what that does.” For most of the time the electric fence is not switched on, but the punters don’t know that! McFadden said: “It’s not on but it’s got the desired effect that everybody thinks it’s on and they keep well away from it. It’s the fear factor. It’s working very well,” when asked what was the customers’ reaction to the possibility of getting a shock if they got too close to the bar, he said: “It was quite comical. We’re in a rural area so everybody knows what an electric fence is. I got a little sign too on it - ‘electric, danger’.”

Parador Hotels on the up THE state-owned hotel chain, Paradores, is currently experiencing more reservations for July and August than it did last year in 2019, before the health crisis.
As of July 9, the chain has sold 3,179 rooms more than they did during the same time period last year. For the month of July, this means 2,711 more rooms than in 2019,
and in August there are 468 more reserved stays than last year. The publicly owned company highlights that most of their establishments are located in remote places and that they are medium or small in size, making them “the safest tourist destination to spend vacations. “Sales are working very well because the Spanish people trust Paradores. “We are a very reliable destination and we will be exemplary to ensure the safety of our customers and employees. We are very proud that so many people trust us at a time when health and safety are two of the most important elements,” stated the President of Paradores, Oscar Lopez.

Vaccine agreement MODERNA AND ROVI have signed a collaboration agreement for the large-scale manufacture of the modern mRNA candidate vaccine against Covid-19 which will be produced at the Rovi facilities in Madrid The Moderna Chief Technology Operations and Quality Officer, Juan Andres, has announced that “Moderna is committed to helping address the Covid-19 crisis. We are pleased to partner with Rovi to potentially deliver hundreds of millions of doses of the finished mRNA1273 vaccine, once it is approved, and help address the need for a vaccine against Covid-19 worldwide.” As part of the agreement, Rovi will fill the vials

As supposed figureheads of democracy and true freedom of speech, the legislate powers have to be subjected to critics and it is their job to take it and not avoid it by disqualifying the press, reporters or columnists. Mr Iglesias and Spokes-man Pablo Echenique seem to have forgotten that they are no longer TV commentators and that they are now in positions of power. However, they have even created a campaign for the press and reporters who have questioned them with what they deem as uncomfortable questions and coined it the ‘Press Sewers.’ These attitudes are more from totalitarian leaders, as when something disturbs them they will try to eliminate it from the public opinion. Creating space nowadays in the printed press to all types of voices is very expensive and not an easy task as many voices
equal varied opinions which in tur n is sure to, unfortunately, offend. Euro Weekly News, unlike most other press outlets, are totally independent and do not bear any political sign other than that of common sense. H o w e v e r, i t d o e s s e e m t h a t some types of press are uncomfortable with the voices which they are unable to give space to. The bottom line is that common sense must always prevail over that of opinionated columns. Nonetheless, it would not be a community paper nor a democratic free speech paper if this space was not made available to all. A judge has just had to out rule the Catalan Government’s confinement ruling of Lleida, pointing out that only the State of Alar m can confine people and this has to be decreed by the Central Government. What is concer ning is that the way in which the Local Government decided upon this, by either acting upon ignorance or solely a decision to step on the citizens’ basic constitutional rights without further caring about the bigger picture. The worrying outlook is the way that freedom of speech and movement is being handled all around the world which gives the appearance that Covid has given a carte blanche to a totalitarian mandate.

Pesky mosquitos Protest in Madrid flourishing DURING the lockdown, the majority of bullfights in Spain were cancelled and this sector supported by certain councils as well as the Vox political party is appealing for financial support for those in the industry who were affected financially. Animal rights campaigners AnimaNaturalis are totally opposed to any money being given
to what they call the subsidising of animal abuse and arrived in Madrid on July 12 to protest about a plan that the city council has to allocate more than €200,000 towards local bullfights. The organisation has also approached the Minister of Culture, José Manuel Rodríguez Uribe asking that the Spanish government does not give any finance to the
sector but to use its funds for other cultural events and this demand has been echoed by 167,000 people. Bullfighting is due to return to the Estepona bullring on August 1 and tickets are currently on sale, but it is highly likely there will be some form of protest either prior to or on the day of the event by organisations such as AnimaNaturalis.
FACTORS: High temperatures, constant rains and unvisited holiday homes could be behind the increase in tiger mosquito numbers. TIGER mosquitos are flourishing on Spain’s costas, more of the pesky insects buzzing around and biting this spring than for the last five years, according to notifications sent to citizen science app Mosquito Alert. The number of tiger mosquitos registered on the app in the first half of 2020 was 70 per cent up on 2018, up until now the year with the most observations at the beginning of the season. The year with the highest number of observations for a full season remains 2015.
The high temperatures and constant rains this spring created the ideal conditions for the mosquitos to reproduce, but lockdown could also have played a part in pushing up the numbers. With people unable to move around the country under the State of Alarm, holiday homes along the Mediterranean were left uncared for, and the critters could have found more spots to breed, like pots filled with stagnant water. He recommends taking care to treat inflatable pool water and to empty rain water out of any recipients.

Car Sharing UBER in Spain has entered into an agreement with Catalan based company Social Car to operate a car sharing scheme in seven cities throughout Spain although it will still offer drivers with ‘mini cabs.’ The concept of car sharing which sees owners using a website to allow drivers to rent their cars for a set period of time and even Santander bank has launched its own version, Wabi. There are price benefits and also this is seen as a form of sustainability resulting in fewer cars on the road.
Ikea expands SWEDISH Group Ikea has announced that it plans to spend €150 million expanding its business in Spain and expects to employ a further 750 staff in the new outlets. First change will be a move to larger premises in Madrid.
Job losses TWO UK High Street giants, Boots and John Lewis are closing stores and laying off up to 5,300 shop workers and support staff in order to try to save money following the effects of the lockdown and reduced footfall.

Spanish cash machines may be replaced THE future of bank owned and run cash machines in Spain may see a major change post Covid19 as Euro Automatic Cash (EAC), owned jointly by Santander (through its Banco Popular subsidiary) and Credit Mutuel wants to shake up the sys tem. I’m trying to make a point
THE British people are frightened. Many I have spoken to feel lost, adrift and vulnerable. At a time when they need the support and strength of their leaders, the older citizens in particular, feel they have been abandoned to a whole new creed of unfamiliar values and customs that appear to take complete precedence over their own. Is this not a terrible indictment of the UK authorities? Those who are supposed to look after the well-being of the citizens they are paid to protect and serve? Today I was talking to a friend, who told me he was recently attending a local hospital where he entered into a conversation with one of the resident doctors. The subject got around to the Covid virus and specifically as to why there were reports that a considerable proportion of ethnic minorities seemed to be more affected than their white counterparts? The doctor told him that in his, and most of his colleagues’ professional opinion, the reasons were that many from ethnic areas hadn’t followed the directions of the authorities. For some time they had simply carried on as normal, and, re the Leicestershire factory incident, basically taken

hardly any notice whatsoever of social distancing. But this is not the point I am endeavouring to make. My friend also told me that when the doctor began relating these opinions, his voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper and he began looking nervously around, in case he was being overheard. Is that not a frightening and completely unacceptable state of affairs? Here is an intelligent professional
man in an important and respected position, actually afraid to be overheard stating what he considered the truth, in case he is branded a racist and possibly puts his job on the line. And have no doubt whatsoever, had he been overheard by anyone who decided they were ‘offended,’ he would almost certainly become the subject of some form of enquiry and could indeed have lost his job.
Someone really needs to take all this soul destroying, opinion muzzling, racist nonsense by the scruff of the neck and shake some common sense into it. It is being used as a weapon. It is successfully eroding the very spirit of the UK and its people. The expression ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a blatant suppression of free speech. It is plainly confrontational and presents no opportunity of recourse or debate whatsoever. By contrast, woe betide those who choose to quite lawfully display the slogan ‘White lives Matter’ or even ‘All Lives Matter’; they have been chastised and dropped on by the law like a ton of bricks, either for racial incitement or at best far right activism. No wonder the indigenous British public is confused and worried. These double standards need to be addressed and rectified; before it is too late. The people I actually do feel sorry for are the genuine immigrants, who are attempting to integrate and truly are an enriching addition to their new, free and generous country. Want an Apartment on the Beach? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man NINE years after moving here permanently we made the major decision to not have any assets in the UK so we sold our family home there. We purchased a couple of beach apartments to rent here so that we would get a small income from short term holiday rentals. This has worked well for us as we did everything legally - got licences etc and got them up to government spec. Fast forward to the last few months - everything stopped and all the bookings we had cancelled. This wasn’t too much of a problem because most people were happy to rearrange for later on this year or just wait till next year. We, of course, have a booking form which clearly states that the deposit is non-refundable and we recommend that our clients have travel insurance. One or two people asked for their money back. We pointed out the Ts and Cs and said we would gladly provide all the required documentation so they could
claim on their insurance. ‘Oh, we haven’t got any.’ We explained that was their problem. It can’t become our problem and we can’t be the only losers because they haven’t taken travel insurance … can we? So not only have we got empty apartments with no idea when they will rent again, to add insult to injury some toe rag decides to break in and squat for a few days. He used the washing machine, shower, bedrooms, towels, and sheets and nicked the TV on his way out. Here’s a bit of info for you. If someone squats in your place and you don’t report it within 24 hrs they have rights and it’s not just a case of sending the police round to evict them. To be honest though the police were fantastic and after we made a denuncia they sent along a forensic team to check for fingerprints. We once had a burglary in the UK and the police didn’t send anyone as they didn’t have the manpower. They told us to claim on our insurance and gave us a crime number. The insurance company here were brilliant too. They fixed all the locks and helped replace the damaged doors and broken glass. So, anyone want to buy an apartment on the beach?

A life without music, is a life without air
GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY ON Monday afternoon, following lunch at home, I sat in the shade of the trees in my garden, staring out to sea. The announcement of the death of Ennio Morricone, came as something of a jolt. Having always adored his m u s i c , a n d f i l m s c o re s , I l i s tened closely as Radio Clásica played tribute to the Italian maestro. I watched, as people moved slow-paced along the beach, in high temperatures, while yachts glided, to and from Puerto Banùs. Life was calm, and somehow, I felt tears fill my eyes, and roll down my face. The music, moved me in such a way, that I was unable to control my emotion. Of course, there are certain types who will say, to cry is a sign of weakness. I beg to differ. Sometimes the power of music can move us so deeply, and transport us to moments in our lives, that perhaps we had subconsciously forgotten. As if adding to the overall feeling of nostalgia, the radio was slightly out of signal, making it feel even more surreal. I remained in the same spot for the duration of the broadcast, only moving to refill my wine glass. Without doubt, one of the most important figures in music history, his passing made me reflect on the number of wonder ful movies, for which he has created the soundtracks. Cinema Paradiso being my favourite. The music, reminded me of old friends and happy days, which, even though sometimes I may not recall, I carry with me always. Without realising, I sent messages to each of those who crossed my mind. Strangely, but I suppose not surprisingly, they agreed that each time they hear certain pieces, they are reminded of me. I sipped my wine and smiled. My darling mother, has always insisted that we have a family rule Monday is a day of rest. Our family, usually take a long lunch, and allow the week to warm up, before diving in. It’s a rule that I’m more
ON MONDAY: Happy to take it slowly. than happy to abide by. In fact, by taking Monday slowly, the week seems to flow better. In extreme contrast to the tranquility of Monday, on Sunday evening I went for a run at sunset. Heading from Los Monteros to Cabopino, I was shocked, if not angered, to see large groups of people packed into the various chiringuitos. Certain places rammed with dancing people, as DJs pumped out house classics. Don’t get me wrong, as much as I love Morricone, I also adore house music, disco, jazz and opera. However, after a lockdown that felt as if it would never end, to witness such disregard for social distancing rules, my blood boiled. Hundreds of people without a care in the world, and worryingly, bar owners happy to take their cash. Yes, we need the economy to reboot. That much is obvious, but can these people really be so stupid to believe this will end well. A couple of weeks of partying and spending, could easily end with many more months of lockdown, as a second wave develops. You know what they say - stupid is, as stupid does. Hopefully the stupid people will wake up soon, or be forced to do so. I dedicate this column to my dear friend, Princess Hermine de Cler mont-Tonnerre, who passed away this week, following a motorcycle accident earlier this year. You will forever stay in my heart.

HERE is a little question for you! Why do people gossip so much? My question should really be, why do we British gossip so much over here? There is a n e v e r- e n d i n g s w i r l o f Chinese whispers that bec a m e m o re o b v i o u s t h a n ever during the pandemic and the ensuing lockdown. Many had a different take on the lockdown rules without making any checks on official government websites that the information that they were spreading was true. I’m amazed at the number of bars that were reportedly closing down, never to open their doors again. The rumours in most cases have been wrong because the self-same bars are indeed still operating and thankfully serving customers. Maybe we gossip because idle hands make light work. This could very well be the

Gossip and tittle tattle truth. Wherever I have lived, I have heard rumours of new marinas being built and I have lived in a number of places around Spain. Not one of these supposed marinas has come to fruition in all my years as a resident. Underground car parks have been excitedly announced by the hearsay brigade but the diggers have never turned up. When I had a cabaret bar in Tenerife with my Dragtastic partner Barry Pugh, we were the subject of m u c h g o s s i p . We d e cided to close the bar to concentrate on the cabaret circuit without all the rigmarole of stocking a bar and health checks etc. The gossips came flying out of the cupboard with stories of impending doom about our lack of funds, bankruptcy and massive debts to all and sundry. The rumours were far

from the truth and we were able to laugh them off. You are never able to find out who has started the rumour. It has always come from someone else. About 10 years ago I was told by a friend of mine that I had died. Sadly, for the gossips, nobody had told me to stop breathing so I was able to prove them wrong. Again, I just laughed it off. Nowadays, if I hear gossip, I make it my business to find out the truth from the horse’s mouth before it gets out of control. I go to the person or business that is the subject of so much attention and tell them what has reached my ears. That way I will either get the truth or get my ears boxed. There is another option. Don't get involved and KEEP SHTUM! Gossip is the Devil’s radio and I would prefer not to DJ for him!
Pick a charity; any charity
BY NICOLE KING AS was to be expected the plight of many continues in the fall out following the lockdown. Even people who care and want to continue to help the less fortunate find themselves too busy now back at work or lacking volunteers to continue their work. This seems to be the conversation all round. Every charity I talk to has the same story. Margot from the Cudeca shop in Avenida del Mar in Marbella says that from the 34 volunteers she had before Covid-19 shut everything down, only four have returned. Obviously if most of the volunteers are of retirement age they are not flocking up to expose themselves to a situation that is far from under control. Collective calling sent me their list of requirements, which again is mainly for volunteers with tasks ranging from helping with food collections, stocktaking and making food packs to additional people who can drive and deliver the donations. A GOOD START: Volunteering at a food collection at a local shop. comes to a halt. Ana Maria of the Butterfly Children Charity also has the same plea: volunteers please - also for their charity shops and to partake in a new fundraiser we can all join in easily - run to fly - donate €5 to walk or run 5km and nominate five others to do likewise. In times like this we can hopefully pull more together than ever; not only is it better, it may be the only way.
In this instance in particular I’m appealing to our youth. Some charity shops can have helpers as of 14 years of age, fully covered and insured to assist in the shops. If you don’t want to be inside, dogs need walking at Triple A and cages need cleaning, as with all other animal shelters. You can always do a sponsored walk or run to help raise funds for any of the charities, anything

as long as it’s something. There are many things that can be allocated according to age and talents and it will be a rewarding experience that can only enhance your CV, abilities and outlook. As our objective for UNMS2020 is to ensure our teens feel inclusive in our community and find a sense of purpose and belonging, this could be a great first step. Get involved now that your city actually needs you. Many more youngsters will be staying locally this summer so please, please, please, pick a charity and see how you can help. The first orphans in Malaga who will find themselves homeless upon turning 18 will start arriving to live in Marbella later this month. They are eager to find a job and a sense of belonging; getting involved with our charities is a good start. In fact they have already helped out at a food collection last Sunday at Lidl. Similarly if you’re not back at work perhaps you too might like to volunteer for something, you never know who you might meet. So please, all those who are able, pick a charity, any charity.

OUR VIEW Got it infamy THE latest Hollywood blockbuster gracing our screens and our papers seems to be ‘The Life Story of Johnny Depp’ or this is what Depp’s libel case against the Sun newspaper appears to be turning into. For those who have missed any of it, Johnny Depp has accused his ex-wife Amber Heard of being a ‘sociopathic’ abuser and denied that he is a ‘wife-beater,’ as was printed in the Sun. Whilst Heard claims that the actor attacked her, has a severe drink and drugs problem, and flew into fits of jealous rage. Videos and photographs have been used in evidence which in some opinions, look completely staged by Heard to show Depp in a poor light and goad him into interaction. On reading excerpts from the court transcript, Depp has already adopted the role of his Captain Jack character foregoing simple ‘no’s’ and ‘yes’s’ during being grilled about what happened on a flight where it is said he kicked a chair which in turn hit her and choosing to answer: “That’s quite a stretch of her imagination.” Or “No ma’am I wouldn’t,” and when asked about verbally abusing her on the same flight, “Not under those circumstances I would not. There are possibilities where that kind of thing might come out of my mouth depending on what came out of her mouth prior, but I did not go into a rage on the flight in front of all these people.” As for Heard’s role, there are witness statements and recordings that include her saying, “You got hit... but I did not punch you. I did not f**king deck you. I f**king was hitting you.” Also in a quote from Depp, “Amber severed my finger with the second of two thrown vodka bottles at me in the early afternoon of Sunday March 8.” Whatever you take from it, these are dangerous allegations and violence is no laughing matter. If you choose to think that a young lady was trying to build her acting career by marrying a huge star, abusing him until divorce which in turn elevated her profile and leave with some of his money. Well, that’s your decision. You might also think that a drunken, drug-taking rich man made himself an easy target and that made him angry enough to break a bottle of wine and get angry. We all deserve our opinion.

Hi Editor, The call from British residents for the government to use our Army would not be needed if the UK police force did their job properly. Here in Spain, we do not need to resort to using the Army, since the Local Police, National Police and Guardia Civil keep law and order to protect law-abiding citizens. In England, the police politely asked someone trying to burn the Union Jack flag on our London Cenotaph “please desist and come down.” Here in Madrid, we all know what the law enforcement officers would say and do, so I much prefer to live here in relative safety. Power of hope Dear Euro Weekly News, My god!!! Is the council crazy? The most important place in the summer, for tourism, is the beach. Both Lampola and Platgetes are in a condition like I have never seen before in my 22 years as a resident. Lampola especially is a total disgrace. Access to the sea is very nearly impossible. Today I have seen numerous people risking serious injury attempting to enter the water, and my wife and I have had to assist several elderly people, trying with a lot of serious difficulties, to enter and come out of the sea. We have also witnessed many families leaving the area after a very short time, with small children, being denied safe access to the water in the soaring heat of the day. The townsfolk and restaurateurs etc are about to have one of the worst, if not the worst, trading year in recent times and yet the council is doing nothing to help their cause, by allowing the beach to be in this truly disgraceful state. Tourists, if there are any to come, will not be best pleased and this could have a knock-on effect for several years to come. The Blue Flag is flying in total contempt for its meaning. All this aside, the state of some of the approaching streets and the lack of cleaning and removal of sporadic rubbish is also something not to be proud of. DIONE LOCKYER ON July 9, 2020, my f a m i l y ’s l i v e s c a m e crashing down as we had to put our threeyear-old Mastin, Rocco to sleep. Some of you may have the opinion ‘he was just a dog,’ but to us, he was our family! Our baby boy had taught us so much in such a short space of time and I hope it will teach my readers too. It was July 1, 2017 when two bundles of fur entered our home. Whilst we already had five dogs, we had agreed to foster two puppies until I was able to find them their forever homes.

You Have One Life, Are You Living It? I named them Rocco and Bentley. Within the next month, Bentley had a new family to live with. It was then, we decided to adopt Rocco. Life was pretty perfect until we received some bad news. When Rocco was 18 months old, we were advised that he had problems with his back legs and after numerous visits to the vets and scans with a specialist, we were advised that the operation was too risky, with an 80 per cent chance of failure. My heart was broken, however, Rocco looked at me with his Mastin smile, full of slobber, as if to say, “Why are you crying, mum? Can we
go home now, I want to play!” We took him home, where he ran around the land with the pack and not a care in the world. He may have not been able to run like a nor mal dog, but he never let that stop him! He didn’t look at it as a disability, he adapted to his strengths and wasn’t going to let anything get in his way. Dogs can teach us humans so much. No matter what they go through, they will always offer unconditional love. They don’t allow self-doubt, procrastination, or other ROCCO: Dogs can teach us humans so much.

So, the next time you doubt yourself, the next time you procrastinate about your dreams, the next time you allow other people’s opinions get in your way, think of our Rocco. Remember a malnourished pup who was in a terrible state, who was able to find his forever home, who was loved so much and never let anything stop him from living his best life despite his disabilities. Allow his memory to live in each of you and teach you to live your life in the same way!

Healthy minds MOST of us are aware that physical exercise is beneficial for the health of our body and the regular practice of sport has an endless number of external and internal benefits. The external benefits include fat loss, muscle definition and improvement of strength. Whilst internal benefits include cardiovascular health, increased motivation and improved mood.
The combination of both creates an ideal relationship between an active body and a fit brain. Anxiety and depression have been improved in those who include the practice of sport in their daily routine. Numerous studies, confirm that physical exercise is effective in helping to treat or prevent this type of disease. When practising physical activity, the brain releases serotonin which directly influences your mood. Scientists have repeatedly investigated the incidence in the brain of leading an active life and have shown that it greatly improves the ability to concentrate. Studies confirm that the practice of recur-
rent cardiovascular exercise improves this capacity in only a few months. As physical activity encourages the generation of neurons in the hippocampus, the brain area related to memory, it therefore helps to improve memory and keep it intact for longer. The Spanish Society of Neurology reported in 2019 that regular physical exercise has direct effects on learning and memory, and helps to keep the brain in good health in general. Depending on the type of sport you decide to practise you will find different effects. However, they all have a common denominator: comprehensive well-being.

Surviving summer with bipolar Anyone else struggling to keep up with their social life this summer?! MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED I LOVE summer. Lighter evenings, longer days, warmer weather, summer dresses, sunkissed skin. Generally speaking, as seems to be common with most people I speak to when the sun is out, I’m in a better mood. However I find the summer months to be an immense struggle - gatherings, beach days, pool days, BBQ, all of a sudden my social life is quite busy! The lighter evenings and longer days meant more time counting down the hours until it was dark enough to go to sleep, it’s exhausting ! The warmer weather meant more plans to try and not cancel last minute and, as a result, more excuses to make up. I sometimes can’t even muster up the enthusiasm to decide what to wear each day. Perhaps it’s all a little easier to understand in the winter. It’s dark, it’s cold, most people are spending evenings at home not really doing much. If I was having a particularly bad day / week / month, it didn't feel so wrong to get home from work, change into my pyjamas and stay indoors. Yet when summer rolled around, it seemed as though everyone was out and about having the ‘best time ever.’ A n d t h e n there I was,
struggling to keep up. For someone suffering with a mental illness, it can be difficult to watch those around you enjoying themselves. I’d mute group chats so as not to be met with the constant plans. “But it’s such a nice day…” people would say, “you should get out the house, it might cheer you up.” A nice walk on a sunny afternoon might do wonders if I’m just having an ‘off day,’ but this is so much more than just an ‘off day,’ and a sunny afternoon isn’t a cure. Bipolar and anxiety don’t care about the weather, your weekend plans, or the birthday coming up that you’d do anything to be able to enjoy. It doesn’t think to itself ‘summer is here, time for me to disappear for the next few months.’ That isn’t how it works. I’m in the fortunate position of having friends I could be honest with. Friends who would still keep inviting me to things ‘in case I felt up to it’ and didn’t judge me when I stopped replying to messages for days or weeks on end. They’d suggest shorter periods of socialising that felt a lot less daunting, and remind me that they were still around if and when I felt up to going out. They know I don’t like to go out late at night so try to meet up early on the evening. Real friends do this! This summer, I am trying to take each day as it comes and enjoy the good days while they last. I think my own experience has also made me more aware of how others might be feeling, and I’d encourage anyone who thinks a friend might be struggling to try to understand and have a little patience. MAXimum dining pleasure
Laid-back beachside dining. Now for the mains, big plates of chargrilled rib-eye steak with parsley mash, home-made onion rings and extra tasty smoked béarnaise sauce, the biggest chicken schnitzel EWN has ever seen with Israeli salad and the writer’s own miso-glazed salmon with sticky rice and tamarind broth. It was per fect, a lovely, hearty cut of fish, and the miso was as it should be, a glorious glaze instead of an overpow-
ering sauce. The dessert menu was full of wonder ful sounding choices so of course, we dug in. The espresso martini panna cotta was delightfully creamy and not overpowered by the bitter, contrasting coffee, baked lemon cheesecake with lime curd was a smooth, thick mouthful but light on the
stomach, the sweet and tart flavour levelled perfectly. The best, in my opinion, was the chocolate, hazelnut and salted caramel pot, it was divine and served in a jar with chocolate crumble. As our desserts went down our host invited us to cocktails by the poolside bar. The extensive cocktail menu has some classics but many inventive new future favourites like the sweet and heavenly creamy Caramel Baileys Colada which is a dessert in itself and a Parma Violet which ingredients include gin, Maraschino liquor and violet syrup to remind you of the sweets from our childhood. Max Beach wants you to enjoy all the finer things in life and it allows you to take the time to do so. With brilliant service, an extraordinary and exciting menu, and the perfect ambience. AFTER Max Beach in Mijas Costa’s, big reopening this past week, Euro Weekly News decided to check what all the fuss is about. The rock star treatment began when we were greeted at the door with valet parking, a positive assurance that your relaxation was now in somebody else’s hands. Inside, the decor is bright, airy, spacious, and comfortable. The dining room is full and bustling but the waiting staff are attentive and precise. The menu is a mix, but different to one you may have experienced before, a little Italian here, some Moroccan there, a touch of Japanese and a hint of Latin American, all blending well and contemplating each other. EWN’s starters included mixed koftas, the pumpkin and zucchini were soft and flavoursome and the lamb and pistachio heavier and satisfying. Chicken shawarma croquettes with harissa and black garlic yoghurt, which were a hit with a lovely soft and sweet bite and sea bass ceviche with ‘tiger’s milk’ which was a beautiful and colour ful blend of citrus and warmth.
SERIES OF CONCERTS: La Costa de la Musica. MARBELLA Council presents a series of concerts at the Constitution Park Auditorium every Saturday in July and August. The first event on July 18 features the Africa G Project which combines funk, soul, flamenco, electronic and hip hop. July 25 welcomes Marcos Grimaldi & EGipsy which features
two former members of Malaga Flamenco Chill band Chambao. On August 1, it’s the turn of Marbella-born actress and singer Pilar Esteban ‘LaPili’ accompanied by guitarist Tomás García. The blues come to town on August 8 with Eneko Alberdi and the No Solo Blues Band. Local favourite La Negra Mayté the girl

REGULAR readers will know that Chico is often over here with us in our restaurant because he is a close friend. However, it’s been a year or so since he was here as lockdown prevented us all from travelling, so I was really delighted to see his friendly smiley face! The simple words What time is it? It’s Chico time! is remembered across the world as the catch phrase of my friend Chico Slimani (born Yousseph Slimani). Wherever we go I hear people calling out… What time is it? and because
Chico is a born entertainer and people pleaser, he always responds with shouting back… It’s Chico time!! and has a laugh, a dance and a picture taken with them. In the earlier days when I was one of the chefs on TV’s Ready Steady Cook I would stand next to him in shock that so many people knew and loved that catchphrase. People love Chico, he had a No1 hit single knocking Madonna off the No1 spot in 2006 and everyone seems to remember it! I first met Chico at the Hell’s Kitchen TV recording in about 2007. I was going through a divorce and went with a new girlfriend. I wandered over to the seating plan to see where we were going to sit and with whom. At the event there were
FRIENDLY SMILES: Michele, Steven and Chico. many well-known people not least Chef Marco Pierre White and in the kitchen working as Marco’s commis chef was Anthea Turner who I knew well. Anthea spotted me and called out. I went over and she asked if I knew a chocolate mousse recipe because hers had not set. Marco shouted out at her and back into the kitchen she hurried.
As I turned around Chico was behind me, he said, “we are on your table bro!” So, I replied … ”what time is it?” (as you do!) Chico laughed out loud and we became close friends from that day and have always spent quality time together whenever we can. Chico’s wife Danielle is lovely and so intelligent. She really is a mine of information and she keeps my
boy Chico on the rails. Their two children La La and Zac are also heading for fame. La La literally has the voice of an angel, she is only 14 and been accepted into the BRIT school (responsible for stars like Adele and many others). It’s a very special music school and pretty impossible to get in so La La has already been recognised and is on her journey, she is definitely one to look out for! The brief story behind Chico’s scallops is that Chef Raymond Blanc cooked me a scallop in its shell with a pastry lid. It was beautiful but the pity was that I couldn’t eat the pastry on the top because he had covered the top scallop shell with the pastry and it was glued to it. When I got back to my Geranium restaurant in
Cambridge, I recreated the dish replacing the top shell with just a pastry lid and cooked it until crispy. I also changed the sauce to contain truffles. The textures of the crisp pastry and soft baked scallop underneath with creamy truffle sauce are divine! Raymond even admitted that mine was a better version! He said in his soft sexy French accent … “Steven, you cook from the heart and I love that about you!” A few years ago, I served the scallop dish up to Chico and his adorable family as a tasting course, they all said … “Wow!” So, it became the dish that Chico loved most and I re named it Chico time Scallops. So, this week I am letting you into the secret recipe. Scallops cooked in their shells, with truffles sauce… Enjoy!

Chico time Scallops! Ingredients for four • 4 large fresh hand dived scallops in their shell (available from the fish mar kets) • 1 large leek washed and cleaned • 200g salted butter • light olive oil • A tablespoon of chopped fresh dill • ½ glass of Champagne or cava • 2 teaspoons of truffle pieces (available from supermarkets) • A drizzle of truffle oil • Approximately 300g of ready-made puff pastry • 2 egg yolks • A little Maldon salt Method Firstly, prepare the scallops by prizing open the shells with a small knife or oyster knife and remove the flatter of the two halves of shell. This leaves you the scallop sitting in the deeper shell with all the roe and membrane. Remove the roe and membrane with your fingers carefully and wash under

cold water. You should now be able to remove the membrane leaving the red roe intact. Reserve the roe and discard the membrane. Now carefully remove the scallops using a small palate knife and briefly rinse in cold water. Clean the shells or put them
in the dishwasher. Chop the washed leek very finely and fry in a pre-heated pan with half of the butter. Season with a little salt and as they soak up the butter now add the cava. Add the chopped dill and finally stir in the truffle pieces. Reserve this mix. In a dry pre-heated frying pan heated at full temperature add a little olive oil and seal the scallops for a little colour, add the remaining butter and now add the roes. Cook both on one side only for about 30 seconds to one minute, no more. Remove, season and drain on tissue paper. Line up the scallop shells and divide the leek mixture between them evenly. Place the seared scallop coloured side upwards on top of the leek mix and the roe next to it. Drizzle them with the truffle oil. Roll out the pastry to approx 2mm and cover the scallop shells with the pastry. Cut around the pastry so that you have four shells neatly covered in pastry sealed by squeezing the pastry to the shell. Brush the pastry with the egg yolk and season the top with Maldon salt. The scallops can be kept like this in the

fridge for up to 12 hours. Bake in a preheated oven 200ºC until the pastry is lightly golden. Serve them explaining to the guests that they can pull back the pastry and add a little of the creamy truffle sauce, for the full taste experience. For the Truffle sauce • 300ml of thick cream • 1 white onion chopped • 2 cloves garlic peeled and sliced finely • 100g salted butter • 4 teaspoons of truffle pieces • 1 tablespoon truffle oil • Maldon salt Method Simply bring the cream to the boil and add the onion and garlic. Simmer until the cream is nice and thick and add the butter and whisk in. Now pass the sauce through a sieve into a clean pan to remove the garlic and onion pieces. Finally add the truffle pieces to the sauce and whisk in and then add the truffle oil. You can keep the sauce warm on the stove until needed. When needed pour into a small jug and serve poured over the scallops, when the pastry lid is lifted.

THE Blues have successfully overturned their twoyear ban from European club competitions. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that the club are cleared of ‘disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions.’ UEFA issued the ban in February after ruling City had committed ‘serious breaches’ of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016. In delivering the ruling on Monday June 13, CAS said City did “fail to coop-
erate with UEFA authorities” but overturned the decision by UEAF’s club financial control body (CFCB) to ban them. A club spokesman said the decision was “validation of the club’s position and the body of evidence that it was able to present. “The club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered,” he said. UEFA said it noted there was “insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold
all of the CFCB’s conclusions in this specific case and that many of the alleged breaches were time-barred.” The governing body added: “Over the last few years, Financial Fair Play has played a significant role in protecting clubs and helping them become financially sustainable and UEFA and the European Club Association remain committed to its principles.” Cas said also that the fine will be cut from €30m (£26.9m) to €10m (£9m approx).
