Wa l k f o r L i f e A r boleas is a registered charity that helps people affected by cancer and in financial need, of all ages and nationalities within a 25-kilometre radius of the locality. The charity raises money through donations and events, the main one being the annual six or three-kilometre walk around Arboleas. Covid-19 meant the 2020 walk could not go ahead, but instead there was the 6k Any Wa y C h a l l e n g e . P e o ple could walk, run, swim, do it on a treadmill or cycle the distance without gathering in groups.

Stuart Copeland was one of the people who walked the sixkilometre route, doing it on his own in just under an hour. Ceri Norman walked it with her husband. A r b o l e a s To w n H a l l staff, including the mayor and Local Police officers, also walked the six kilometres, as did Ovie Ojiri and his gym members in just under an hour. ‘Paul the Pool,’ his wife Anna Bedford and their daughters Imogen and Alannah did six kilometres a day over six days, doi n g t h e Wa l k f o r Life route on the last day. Melanie Rayner ran it in 38 minutes.
Mick and Jane Thomas completed their six-kilometre walk in stages, Angela and Phil Kendal did theirs in in their local rambla and Nigel Bradder did 12 kilometres on his Elliptigo. Eighty-four-year-old Jean Bye did a threekilometre walk very early in the morning to avoid the heat. Anji and Craig Badley walked 20 kilom e t r e s , w h i l e Tr u d y Sailes completed six hours weeding. Carly Flitney walked six kilometres every morning for six days around Saliente Alto. Andrea Hollings and the Dawn Chorus Walkers completing an amazing 600 kilome-
tres between them. M a r i a Wa l t e r d i d s i x kilometres around Cerro Gordo, and Jacqui and Rob Allen ran six kilometres, three times a week, every week in June. Alan Pearce did two kilometres in the pool, two walking and two on his exercise bike. Holman Blackburn walked six kilometres to the rubbish bins and back wearing ankle weights. Judi BedfordKeogh swam six kilometres in total within a month, and Claire Harper swam six kilometres every week for six weeks in her pool, the distance from Arboleas to Villaricos.

Masks at All Times in Andalucia W E D N E S D AY, J u l y 1 5 s a w t h e t h e n e w l a w which has been decreed by the President of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno, enforcing everybody aged six or above to wear a mask at all times. The new policy will ensure that masks be worn at all times when using public spaces, even if the 1.5-metre social distance can be upheld, and even if you are outdoors or indoors. • If you are caught breaking this new regulation you may face fines of up to €100. • This rule is only for individuals aged six or older and will not include people with respiratory distress or illness that may be aggravated by the use of masks. However, you must have medical proof to justify this circumstance. BEACH AND POOL • The masks will be mandatory when taking walks on the beach, however, when you are sat with your social group you will not be forced to wear it, as long as you maintain the 1.5-metre safety distance. • If you are sat by yourself then the same applies, you do not have to wear the mask. • Furthermore, you do not have to wear a mask when swimming. For example, on your walk from the beach to your car, your mask must be on. • In terms of mask use at the swimming pool, the rules are similar. They do not have to be worn when swimming or when you are sat on your towel, but they will be mandatory when you are walking around the facility. SPORTS • You will not be forced to wear a mask when practising sports outside, nor when the use of a mask can be counterproductive.
Beaches boast safety stamp FIVE Cuevas del Almanzora beaches now boast the Andalucia regional government stamp for safety. The Quitapellejos in Palomares, Villaricos’ Siret cove and main beach, Pozo del Esparto and the El Calon beach have all merited the ‘Andalucia Segura’ (Safe Andalucia) distinction, identifying them as locations which comply with World Health Organisation safety measures for dealing with Covid-19. Gaining the safety recognitions from the Junta de Andalucia’s Tourism regional ministry is proof of its
“commitment to the safety and health of all beach-goers, and everyone who enjoys the locality’s coves and beaches,” Cuevas council affirmed. The local authority said its aim is for Spanish and foreign tourists to choose the municipality as a holiday destination. It is currently immersed in an intensive tourism promotional campaign, highlighting the locality’s cultural and archaeological attractions, active tourism opportunities and cuisine, in addition to its offer of sun and sea.
RESTAURANTS AND BARS • In restaurants this rule will be exempt when eating, drinking or smoking for example on a bar terrace. If you are sat at your table with your family or nucleus of friends, you will not have to wear this either. If you are sat by yourself then the same applies you do not have to wear the mask. WAKES This protocol has been introduced in order to stifle the
growth of outbreaks across the region. Another of the measures is reducing the maximum capacity at wakes, which will now only cater to a total of 25 people if it is outdoors, or 10 if it is indoors. DRIVING • Furthermore, a mask will be compulsory when driving your private vehicle if there are people who do not live with you in the car.

Rock and a hard place A BEACH-GOER had to be helicoptered to safety on Sunday after he found himself stuck between a rock and a hard place in the Costa Almeria’s Cabo de Gata natural park on Sunday. Maritime Rescue said the alert came through from the 061 emergency service at 12.30 midday that a bather had got into trouble trying to get out of the sea in Rodalquilar in what were rough conditions. He managed to scramble onto a rocky ledge, where churning waves left

He is electronically chipped, very friendly and answers to the name of Wilson. His owner is a 79-year-old gent who is beside himself as he has lost him in the vicinity of

Virtual promotion Shows go on SHOWS are going on in Vera this summer, with a complete cultural programme of free events lined up for the coming months. There is music, magic, theatre, dance, storytelling, puppet shows and circus in different outdoor venues like the Plaza Mayor in Vera town and the seafront promenade. The council said this allowed for compliance with health authority recommendations on preventing the spread of Covid-19 while at the same time making the most of the summer weather. Commenting at the cultural schedule presentation on Friday, Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco said it has been designed for “all tastes and ages, with the intention of being another leisure option for the summer nights.” Culture councillor Maria Manuela Caparros and Festivities councillor Amparo Garcia described the summer season as an opportunity to “regain the confidence of people in

THE provincial government has been promoting the attractions of the Costa Almeria as a safe holiday destination at a tourism fair, albeit virtually. Organised by Viajes El Corte Ingles, the Vecisa Tourism virtual event gave the Diputacion the opportunity to highlight the province’s selling point as one of the areas in Spain with a relatively low rate of Covid-19 infections to some 5,000 participating travel agents and to potential travellers around the country. Leapy Lee Triumphs in Readers’ Poll DURING the time of lockdown here in Spain and for a short period after, it seemed that the expatriate community were revelling in the concept of a new normal in which neighbours helped and supported each other and joined each other on balconies to applaud the fantastic work of healthcare professionals. However, slowly but surely, as people have spent more time in isolation behind their keyboards and screens, there appears to be an insidious change. On social media, there seems to be a great deal of rather pointless arguments and sniping when people disagree with one opinion or another. It now seems that it’s not just confined to social media as recent defamatory comments made in other newspapers are a prime example of this trend. This has spurred Euro Weekly News on to take a serious look at what we allow to
appear in print. One important question we were forced to ask ourselves concerned long time columnist Leapy Lee and the opinion on whether he says what our readers think or is a reactionary voice of an outdated past.
Euro Weekly, therefore, decided to give our valued readers their say and created a reader’s poll simply asking whether it was time for Leapy to move on or let him have his say. The results were frankly staggering, with a massive
74 per cent approval rating from readers keeping the faith with our long-time controversial columnist. Leapy is his own man, with very strong opinions about a number of things, and although he has lived in Mallorca for several
years, he has never lost his affection for the United Kingdom and this is why he feels so strongly about the fact that it appears to have changed so much over the last few decades. In his younger days he used to spend a lot of time
in Ladbroke Grove during London’s swinging 60s and was a lover of the new music coming out of such clubs as the infamous Mangrove, he had many West Indian friends and joined in at the very first Notting Hill Carnival, which was a melting pot of London’s many cultures. He also enjoyed an eightyear stint in Saudi Arabia which he looks back on with great pleasure and insists he has no problems with immigration or Islam but absolutely can’t stand what he sees as the lack of gratitude and intent to assimilate once a small percentage of first and second-generation immigrants arrive in the UK. Leapy Lee may be Marmite to many but his weekly observations are not likely to either bring the western world to its knees nor inspire a worldwide revolution. Therefore, thanks to you. our readers, Leapy is here to stay!

Respect for the oceans ADRA Council is taking a stand on respecting the world’s oceans and marine life. Once again the local authority has joined the Blue Flag Med Week initiative promoted by the ADEAC Environmental Education and Consumer Association, which involves activities to clean up the seas and to raise awareness about marine rubbish. Different entities in 10 countries take part in the initiative, although due to the Covid-19 pandemic, participatory activities will not be as usual this year. Adra Council is collaborating on getting across messages on sustainability, the correct management of waste and the environmental care of the oceans, with images illustrating the problems stemming from sea pollution and the consequences for marine fauna. The administration is putting out on social media images on issues like microplastics, cigarette butts, coronavirus-related trash, biodiversity, beach safety, floating marine rubbish and environmental education.

Population record THE population of the Costa Almeria capital has reached a new record, going past the 200,000 mark for the first time. The city council has this week confirmed the number of registered residents by the beginning of this year stood at 201,780, or 2,130 more than at the start of 2019. This puts Almeria among the 30 most populated localities in Spain, the city authority reported. Of the city’s current inhabitants, 98,857 are men and 102,923 are women. Approximately one in five residents are aged under 18. The number of foreigners living in the city has increased by 1,646 to 23,437. Of these just 4,673 are from other European Union member-states, down from 4,893.

The councillor said these were measures in addition to those the local authority has already implemented with the same objective, “at a time when after the health crisis we are facing an economic crisis.”

THE provincial council has announced tie-ins with two well-known travel portals to promote the attractions of the Costa Almeria as a holiday destination to their combined nine million users. The agreements with Destinia and Atrapalo runs until September, and will, according to the Diputacion, “further strengthen bookings made by national and international market tourists during the summer season, in which the province of Almeria is shaping up as one of the most attractive and safest destinations in the country.” The agreements include positioning actions and direct advertising on the portals and their social media platforms, as well as a guarantee of a minimum number of bookings, the provincial administration explained. Almeria Tourism deputy Fernando Gimenez said the portals tie-ins, along with the agreements with Eurosport on promoting the region during the broadcast of the French

Infrastructure investment INFRASTRUCTURE in Chirivel is undergoing upgrades thanks to a €2 6 5 , 0 0 0 i n v e s t m e n t i n the municipality as part of the PFEA rural employment development plan. The Almeria provincial council said the works includes reforms to the market, the village streets and to parks and gardens, creating 2,400 working days in all. The administration also explained the works come under its Progama Acelera aimed at boosting the construction sector and at helping to maintain and create jobs. Diputacion PFEA deputy Matilde Diaz paid a recent visit to Chirivel, where accompanied by local mayor Jose Torregrosa she went to see how the moder nisation works are going. The provincial council said this means the Costa Almeria will reach 153 million homes. The Diputacion’s agreement with Eurosport includes TV ads during Roland-Garros and 2,000 sixsecond ‘mini-spots’ which Eurosport for France will show during the broadcast of ATP World Tour tournaments. In addition, Eurosport journalists will produce content on the province’s natural resources, cuisine and places for practising sport for the channel’s social media in France and Spain, and there will be two five-minute programmes promoting Almeria and featuring a top French tennis player. Tragic day IN TROUBLE: Neither bather was able to make it back to shore. TWO bathers tragically lost their lives on the same day on the Costa Almeria after struggling to swim back to shore. The first death was on Thursday morning on July 9 in Las Negras in Nijar. The Junta de Andalucia’s 112 Emergencies service reported it received a call at around 11am warning there was a man about 50 metres off shore who was clearly in trouble. Guardia Civil, Civil Protection, Local Police and a health emergency team rushed to his assistance. They managed to get him out of the water and practised CPR, but were un-
able to resuscitate him. That afternoon, a call came through reporting another bather in much the same situation as the first, but this time in the sea in front of Rodalquilar’s El Playazo beach. A Maritime Rescue helicopter and a Guardia Civil speed boat joined the rescue effort. Nijar Civil Protection said they got the 46-yearold man to the shore and carried out CPR before the helicopter evacuated him to the airport, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to hospital. Sadly, the health authorities later confirmed he had passed away.

Violent robbery arrest GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a 35-year-old suspected robber who barged his way into a property in Roquetas de Mar and seriously injured the two occupants who were at
home at the time. The victims, two middle-aged men, reported that the assailant set upon them the minute one of them opened the front door to him. The attacker managed to snatch both of the men’s wallets and a mobile phone. He then set about hitting them in the face and stomach, causing such serious injuries the pair needed treatment in the Poniente hospital emergencies department. Afterwards he ran off. The Guardia Civil said that thanks to information gleaned from interviews with possible witnesses and provided by the victims, investigators identified the suspect. The victims confirmed the identification from a photo recognition. This led to the arrest within 48 hours of the assault and theft.

THE Almeria provincial council has announced an investment of more than €750,000 on upgrades to different stretches of the Almanzora Valley highway network. Works like resurfacing and new signalling are set to be carried out on sections of roads in Albanchez, Albox, Seron, Alcontar and Cantoria. The Diputacion explained the investment comes under its ‘Programa Acelera’ aimed at speeding up investment in provincial towns and villages and providing cash injections
for construction and associated businesses at what have been difficult times due to the pandemic. The administration said the idea is to contribute to the maintenance and creation of jobs through projects which improve provincial infrastructure and local authority’s public services. Quality beaches THREE blue flags and four Q Tourism Quality flags are now flying on the beaches of Carboneras. The council said the distinctions are testament to the high environmental standards and levels of services and facilities on this stretch of the provincial coast. The El Ancon, Las Marinicas and the Los Barquicos-Los Cocones beaches have both blue and Q flags, while El Corral has the latter alone.
Speaking at the official raising of the flags last week, Carboneras mayor Jose Luis Amerigo expressed his satisfaction at the beaches gaining the recognitions in a year when sun and sand-seeking tourists are particularly looking for locations where they can be sure there is strict compliance with health and hygiene measures. “The flags mean an added value at this time,” he commented.
Pulpi attractions PULPI Council and the Isla de Terreros Tourism Association have been showing off the local attractions to representatives of tourist offices in the region. The aim of the so-called ‘Fam Trip’ was to give tourist office staff the chance to see and experience what Pulpi has to offer in person so they are in a better position to make excursion recommendations to visitors to their localities. On this occasion, tourist office personnel from Mojacar, El Ejido, Almeria City and Aguilas in Murcia took part. They started off with a guided tour of Pulpi’s geological phenomenon, the giant gypsum geode. The group also went to the castle and to the beaches of San Juan de los Terreros.

Emergencies reinforcement MOVING FORWARD
A NEW 061 health emergency centre in Vera town will start operating on July 20, covering localities throughout the eastern Levante region of the Costa Almeria. The Junta de Andalucia’s Health and Familes department has set up the base to provide reinforced urgent
assistance to patients in Cuevas del Almanzora, Antas, Los Gallardos, Turre, Pulpi, Huercal-Overa, Mojacar and Garrucha, as well as Vera. Attached to the Vera medical centre, the centre will be staffed by a nurse and a health emergencies ex-

EXPECTATION: The Junta de Andalucia president said the Almanzora highway project should be completed by the end of 2023. THE Almanzora highway will be fully up and running by the end of 2023 if everything goes according to plan, Junta de Andalucia President Juanma Moreno announced during his visit to Almeria on Wednesday. Speaking at the inauguration of the final part of the Vera to Garrucha road to be made into two lanes each way, Moreno revealed the project for the La Con-
cepcion to the Mediterraneo motorway stretch of the Almanzora highway has now been put out to tender for €33 million. The Junta president acknowledged that the completion of the project to make the entire length of the road running from Fines to the A-7 motorway is something residents and businesses in the area are eager to see as soon as possible. He described the high-
way as “very important for the region and strategic in the infrastructure of this province.” Moreno also took the opportunity to refer to what he said is the “Andalucia government’s unswerving backing of and commitment to Almeria Province and the improvement of its infrastructure, this being a key aspect for the province to develop its business, logistical and international muscle.”

Vaccine agreement MODERNA AND ROVI have signed a collaboration agreement for the large-scale manufacture of the modern mRNA candidate vaccine against Covid-19 which will be produced at the Rovi facilities in Madrid The Moderna Chief Technology Operations and Quality Officer, Juan Andres, has announced that “Moderna is committed to helping address the Covid-19 crisis. We are pleased to partner with Rovi to potentially deliver hundreds of millions of doses of the finished mRNA1273 vaccine, once it is approved, and help address the need for a vaccine against Covid-19 worldwide.” As part of the agreement, Rovi will fill the vials

Parador Hotels on the up THE state-owned hotel chain, Paradores, is currently experiencing more reservations for July and August than it did last year in 2019, before the health crisis. As of July 9, the chain has sold 3,179 rooms more than they did during the same time period last year. For the month of July, this means 2,711 more rooms than in 2019, and in August there are 468 more reserved stays than last year. The publicly owned company highlights that most of their establishments are located in remote places and that they are medium or small in size, making them “the safest tourist destination to spend vacations. “Sales are working very well because the Spanish people trust Paradores. “We are a very reliable destination and we will be exemplary to ensure the safety of our customers and employees. We are very proud that so many people trust us at a time when health and safety are two of the most important elements,” stated the President of Paradores, Oscar Lopez.

Cops arrested
OFFICERS ARRESTED: The investigation has been ongoing since 2017.
TWO officers of the Guardia Civil have been detained for allegedly rigging contracts of police uniforms. Operation ‘Grapa’, as it was called saw the arrests of five other people, the main two officers indicted in the fraud are Colonel Juan Antonio Maroto and Lieutenant Colonel Alberto Martín Altube. The arrests are the result of an investigation in 2017, when 14 people - most of them officials - were arrested for rigging public contracts both in the General Directorate of the Police and in the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
The investigations focus on the alleged rigging of public contracts in the General Directorate of the Guardia Civil, where a group of officials allegedly colluded with companies that were the beneficiaries of awards of various contracts, including police uniforms. The facts investigated, if proven, could constitute alleged crimes of a criminal organisation, influence peddling, embezzlement, fraud against public administrations, negotiations forbidden to public officials, prevarication, bribery, and money laundering - potentially leading to prison sentences.

As supposed figureheads of democracy and true freedom of speech, the legislate powers have to be subjected to critics and it is their job to take it and not avoid it by disqualifying the press, reporters or columnists. Mr Iglesias and Spokesman Pablo Echenique seem to have forgotten that they are no longer TV commentators and that they are now in positions of power. However, they have even created a campaign for the press and reporters

who have questioned them with what they deem as uncomfortable questions and coined it the ‘Press Sewers.’ These attitudes are more from totalitarian leaders, as when something disturbs them they will try to eliminate it from the public opinion. Creating space nowadays in the printed press to all types of voices is very expensive and not an easy task as many voices equal varied opinions which in turn is sure to, unfortunately, offend. A judge has just had to out rule the Catalan Government’s confinement ruling of Lleida, pointing out that only the State of Alarm can confine people and this has to be decreed by the Central Government. What is concerning is that the way in which the Local Government decided upon this, by either acting upon ignorance or solely a decision to step on the citizens’ basic constitutional rights without further caring about the bigger picture. The worrying outlook is the way that freedom of speech and movement is being handled all around the world which gives the appearance that Covid has given a carte blanche to a totalitarian mandate.

Car Sharing UBER in Spain has entered into an agreement with Catalan based company Social Car to operate a car sharing scheme in seven cities throughout Spain although it will still offer drivers with ‘mini cabs.’ The concept of car sharing which sees owners using a website to allow drivers to rent their cars for a set period of time and even Santander bank has launched its own version, Wabi. There are price benefits and also this is seen as a form of sustainability resulting in fewer cars on the road.
Ikea expands SWEDISH Group Ikea has announced that it plans to spend €150 million expanding its business in Spain and expects to employ a further 750 staff in the new outlets. First change will be a move to larger premises in Madrid.

Then we found that the house had never been registered for IBI, the real estate tax. We employed a lawyer to request registration for IBI. We spent thousands of euros on measurements and satellite fix ing. Then we were told that there is a Horizontal Divide on the property, which has to be legally removed. We now need a minor building licence to do some small repairs using a builder. I find that I cannot do this as I am still not paying IBI and because I cannot obtain an AFO. Spanish cash machines may be replaced THE future of bank owned and run cash machines in Spain may see a major change post Covid19 as Euro Automatic Cash (EAC), owned jointly by Santander (through its Banco Popular subsidiary) and Credit Mutuel wants to shake up the sys tem. It believes that due to its size, it is in a position to offer a cheaper ser vice to banks than they can manage if running their own cash machines and it has a vision of purchasing the rights to supply bank machines and then consolidate them. I’m trying to make a point
THE British people are frightened. Many I have spoken to feel lost, adrift and vulnerable. At a time when they need the support and strength of their leaders, the older citizens in particular, feel they have been abandoned to a whole new creed of unfamiliar values and customs that appear to take complete precedence over their own. Is this not a terrible indictment of the UK authorities? Those who are supposed to look after the well-being of the citizens they are paid to protect and serve? Today I was talking to a friend, who told me he was recently attending a local hospital where he entered into a conversation with one of the resident doctors. The subject got around to the Covid virus and specifically as to why there were reports that a considerable proportion of ethnic minorities seemed to be more affected than their white counterparts? The doctor told him that in his, and most of his colleagues’ professional opinion, the reasons were that many from ethnic areas hadn’t followed the directions of the authorities. For some time they had simply carried on as normal, and, re the Leicestershire factory incident, basically taken

hardly any notice whatsoever of social distancing. But this is not the point I am endeavouring to make. My friend also told me that when the doctor began relating these opinions, his voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper and he began looking nervously around, in case he was being overheard. Is that not a frightening and completely unacceptable state of affairs? Here is an intelligent professional
man in an important and respected position, actually afraid to be overheard stating what he considered the truth, in case he is branded a racist and possibly puts his job on the line. And have no doubt whatsoever, had he been overheard by anyone who decided they were ‘offended,’ he would almost certainly become the subject of some form of enquiry and could indeed have lost his job.
Someone really needs to take all this soul destroying, opinion muzzling, racist nonsense by the scruff of the neck and shake some common sense into it. It is being used as a weapon. It is successfully eroding the very spirit of the UK and its people. The expression ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a blatant suppression of free speech. It is plainly confrontational and presents no opportunity of recourse or debate whatsoever. By contrast, woe betide those who choose to quite lawfully display the slogan ‘White lives Matter’ or even ‘All Lives Matter’; they have been chastised and dropped on by the law like a ton of bricks, either for racial incitement or at best far right activism. No wonder the indigenous British public is confused and worried. These double standards need to be addressed and rectified; before it is too late. The people I actually do feel sorry for are the genuine immigrants, who are attempting to integrate and truly are an enriching addition to their new, free and generous country. A life without music, is a life without air
GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY ON Monday afternoon, following lunch at home, I sat in the shade of the trees in my garden, staring out to sea. The announcement of the death of Ennio Morricone, came as something of a jolt. Having always adored his m u s i c , a n d f i l m s c o re s , I l i s tened closely as Radio Clásica played tribute to the Italian maestro. I watched, as people moved slow-paced along the beach, in high temperatures, while yachts glided, to and from Puerto Banùs. Life was calm, and somehow, I felt tears fill my eyes, and roll down my face. The music, moved me in such a way, that I was unable to control my emotion. Of course, there are certain types who will say, to cry is a sign of weakness. I beg to differ. Sometimes the power of music can move us so deeply, and transport us to moments in our lives, that perhaps we had subconsciously forgotten. As if adding to the overall feeling of nostalgia, the radio was slightly out of signal, making it feel even more surreal. I remained in the same spot for the duration of the broadcast, only moving to refill my wine glass. Without doubt, one of the most important figures in music history, his passing made me reflect on the number of wonder ful movies, for which he has created the soundtracks. Cinema Paradiso being my favourite. The music, reminded me of old friends and happy days, which, even though sometimes I may not recall, I carry with me always. Without realising, I sent messages to each of those who crossed my mind. Strangely, but I suppose not surprisingly, they agreed that each time they hear certain pieces, they are reminded of me. I sipped my wine and smiled. My darling mother, has always insisted that we have a family rule Monday is a day of rest. Our family, usually take a long lunch, and allow the week to warm up, before diving in. It’s a rule that I’m more
ON MONDAY: Happy to take it slowly. than happy to abide by. In fact, by taking Monday slowly, the week seems to flow better. In extreme contrast to the tranquility of Monday, on Sunday evening I went for a run at sunset. Heading from Los Monteros to Cabopino, I was shocked, if not angered, to see large groups of people packed into the various chiringuitos. Certain places rammed with dancing people, as DJs pumped out house classics. Don’t get me wrong, as much as I love Morricone, I also adore house music, disco, jazz and opera. However, after a lockdown that felt as if it would never end, to witness such disregard for social distancing rules, my blood boiled. Hundreds of people without a care in the world, and worryingly, bar owners happy to take their cash. Yes, we need the economy to reboot. That much is obvious, but can these people really be so stupid to believe this will end well. A couple of weeks of partying and spending, could easily end with many more months of lockdown, as a second wave develops. You know what they say - stupid is, as stupid does. Hopefully the stupid people will wake up soon, or be forced to do so. I dedicate this column to my dear friend, Princess Hermine de Cler mont-Tonnerre, who passed away this week, following a motorcycle accident earlier this year. You will forever stay in my heart.

Want an Apartment on the Beach? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man NINE years after moving here permanently we made the major decision to not have any assets in the UK so we sold our family home there. We purchased a couple of beach apartments to rent here so that we would get a small income from short term holiday rentals. This has worked well for us as we did everything legally - got licences etc and got them up to government spec. Fast forward to the last few months - everything stopped and all the bookings we had cancelled. This wasn’t too much of a problem because most people were happy to rearrange for later on this year or just wait till next year. We, of course, have a booking form which clearly states that the deposit is non-refundable and we recommend that our clients have travel insurance. One or two people asked for their money back. We pointed out the Ts and Cs and said we would gladly provide all the required documentation so they could
claim on their insurance. ‘Oh, we haven’t got any.’ We explained that was their problem. It can’t become our problem and we can’t be the only losers because they haven’t taken travel insurance … can we? So not only have we got empty apartments with no idea when they will rent again, to add insult to injury some toe rag decides to break in and squat for a few days. He used the washing machine, shower, bedrooms, towels, and sheets and nicked the TV on his way out. Here’s a bit of info for you. If someone squats in your place and you don’t report it within 24 hrs they have rights and it’s not just a case of sending the police round to evict them. To be honest though the police were fantastic and after we made a denuncia they sent along a forensic team to check for fingerprints. We once had a burglary in the UK and the police didn’t send anyone as they didn’t have the manpower. They told us to claim on our insurance and gave us a crime number. The insurance company here were brilliant too. They fixed all the locks and helped replace the damaged doors and broken glass. So, anyone want to buy an apartment on the beach?

OUR VIEW Got it infamy THE latest Hollywood blockbuster gracing our screens and our papers seems to be ‘The Life Story of Johnny Depp’ or this is what Depp’s libel case against the Sun newspaper appears to be turning into. For those who have missed any of it, Johnny Depp has accused his ex-wife Amber Heard of being a ‘sociopathic’ abuser and denied that he is a ‘wife-beater,’ as was printed in the Sun. Whilst Heard claims that the actor attacked her, has a severe drink and drugs problem, and flew into fits of jealous rage. Videos and photographs have been used in evidence which in some opinions, look completely staged by Heard to show Depp in a poor light and goad him into interaction. On reading excerpts from the court transcript, Depp has already adopted the role of his Captain Jack character foregoing simple ‘no’s’ and ‘yes’s’ during being grilled about what happened on a flight where it is said he kicked a chair which in turn hit her and choosing to answer: “That’s quite a stretch of her imagination.” Or “No ma’am I wouldn’t,” and when asked about verbally abusing her on the same flight, “Not under those circumstances I would not. There are possibilities where that kind of thing might come out of my mouth depending on what came out of her mouth prior, but I did not go into a rage on the flight in front of all these people.” As for Heard’s role, there are witness statements and recordings that include her saying, “You got hit... but I did not punch you. I did not f**king deck you. I f**king was hitting you.” Also in a quote from Depp, “Amber severed my finger with the second of two thrown vodka bottles at me in the early afternoon of Sunday March 8.” Whatever you take from it, these are dangerous allegations and violence is no laughing matter. If you choose to think that a young lady was trying to build her acting career by marrying a huge star, abusing him until divorce which in turn elevated her profile and leave with some of his money. Well, that’s your decision. You might also think that a drunken, drug-taking rich man made himself an easy target and that made him angry enough to break a bottle of wine and get angry. We all deserve our opinion.

Here in Spain, we do not need to resort to using the Army, since the Local Police, National Police and Guardia Civil keep law and order to protect law-abiding citizens. Both Lampola and Platgetes are in a condition like I have never seen before in my 22 years as a resident. Lampola especially is a total disgrace. Access to the sea is very nearly impossible. Today I have seen numerous people risking serious injury attempting to enter the water, and my wife and I have had to assist several elderly people, trying with a lot of serious difficulties, to enter and come out of the sea. We have also witnessed many families leaving the area after a very short time, with small children, being denied safe access to the water in the soaring heat of the day. The townsfolk and restaurateurs etc are about to have one of the worst, if not the worst, trading year in recent times and yet the council is doing nothing to help their cause, by allowing the beach to be in this truly disgraceful state. Tourists, if there are any to come, will not be best pleased and this could have a knock-on effect for several years to come. The Blue Flag is flying in total contempt for its meaning. All this aside, the state of some of the approaching streets and the lack of cleaning and removal of sporadic rubbish is also something not to be proud of. The Spanish Society of Neurology reported in 2019 that regular physical exercise has direct effects on learning and memory, and helps to keep the brain in good health in general. Depending on the type of sport you decide to practise you will find different effects. However, they all have a common denominator: comprehensive wellbeing.
I LOVE summer. Lighter evenings, longer days, warmer weather, summer dresses, sunkissed skin. Generally speaking, as seems to be common with most people I speak to when the sun is out, I’m in a better mood. However I find the summer months to be an immense struggle - gatherings, beach days, pool days, BBQ, all of a sudden my social life is quite busy! The lighter evenings and longer days meant more time counting down the hours until it was dark enough to go to sleep, it’s exhausting ! The warmer weather meant more plans to try and not cancel last minute and, as a result, more excuses to make up. I sometimes can’t even muster up the enthusiasm to decide what to wear each day. Perhaps it’s all a little easier to understand in the winter. It’s dark, it’s cold, most people are spending evenings at home not really doing much. If I was having a particularly bad day / week / month, it didn't feel so wrong to get home from work, change into my pyjamas and stay indoors. Yet when summer rolled around, it seemed as though everyone was out and about having the ‘best time ever.’ A n d t h e n there I was,
struggling to keep up. For someone suffering with a mental illness, it can be difficult to watch those around you enjoying themselves. I’d mute group chats so as not to be met with the constant plans. “But it’s such a nice day…” people would say, “you should get out the house, it might cheer you up.” A nice walk on a sunny afternoon might do wonders if I’m just having an ‘off day,’ but this is so much more than just an ‘off day,’ and a sunny afternoon isn’t a cure. Bipolar and anxiety don’t care about the weather, your weekend plans, or the birthday coming up that you’d do anything to be able to enjoy. It doesn’t think to itself ‘summer is here, time for me to disappear for the next few months.’ That isn’t how it works. I’m in the fortunate position of having friends I could be honest with. Friends who would still keep inviting me to things ‘in case I felt up to it’ and didn’t judge me when I stopped replying to messages for days or weeks on end. They’d suggest shorter periods of socialising that felt a lot less daunting, and remind me that they were still around if and when I felt up to going out. They know I don’t like to go out late at night so try to meet up early on the evening. Real friends do this! This summer, I am trying to take each day as it comes and enjoy the good days while they last. I think my own experience has also made me more aware of how others might be feeling, and I’d encourage anyone who thinks a friend might be struggling to try to understand and have a little patience. I discovered to my horror that I was having trouble buttoning up all of my light-weight summer shirts. A trip to the nearest clothing store confirmed that, during the Covid-19 lockdown, I had gained weight around my midriff and the only shirts that would fit were XL. Normally I’m a medium. I did better than most during the lockdown because I was

SWEET TREATS: After constantly munching pastries it’s hardly surprising I put on weight during lockdown. accustomed to working from home, but the only exercise I was getting was moving from the computer to the fridge which I’d filled with stuff like cheese dips and chocolate items I’d carefully avoided in the past. Worse still, I developed a taste for pastries, especially the Jesús brand. Given that I was eating heavy dinners at around mid-
night, and munching chocolate and fartons at around 6am before going back to bed and sleeping until midday, it’s hardly surprising that I began getting truly out of shape. After the lockdown eased, I typed ‘quick ways to lose weight’ into Google. There I found the Indian Boiled Egg Diet which advised me that the two-week plan requires you to
have a maximum of two boiled eggs per day with other nutritious foods. ‘Eggs are loaded with high-quality proteins vitamins A, D, E, B12 … These nutrients help build muscle mass, improve metabolic rate and brain function, protect you from heart disease and macular degeneration, produce hormones, and strengthen the immune system.
‘When you consume eggs, you consume proteins, which take longer to digest. Hence, you will feel full for a long duration. The proteins also help build lean muscle mass, which, in turn, helps accelerate your metabolism.’ After vowing to try it, with some trepidation I stepped onto my Huawei ‘smart’ scale - it connects to a phone and tracks all changes in weight, body fat and muscle - and found to my surprise that, between August last year and the end of June 2020, I’d only gained three pounds. But these were concentrated around my midriff, hence the difficulty in buttoning up my shirts. Thanks to five days of the egg diet and some vigorous exercise I’ve shed two of those three pounds, and, by the end of the fortnight, with luck, I should be back to being fit, tanned, sexy and slim. Well, even at 73 one can dream, can’t one?

ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher THE Citroen C1 has been around for some years in the crowded city car class but the current model is still a significant contender, scoring well for its keen pricing, smart looks and easy driving dynamics. C1 is priced from €12,000 (£10,810) and comes in three and five-door form, all models using the same engine, a 1.0-litre threecylinder petrol unit offering 71 hp, and mated to a standard five-speed gearbox. It’s a frugal engine delivering average fuel economy of 20.8 kpl (58.8 mpg), though the downside of that is a slow 0-100 kph time of 14.0 seconds. Top speed is 200 kph (100 mph) and emissions are 108 g/km. Out and about, the C1 has a light-touch easy-drive feel which makes it agile for parking. Overall it has a smooth pleasant driving ambiance and is especially nimble in urban traffic. Revised styling gives the C1 a chic appearance and it has perhaps a touch more youthful personality than rivals such as the Hyundai10 and Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 108. Inside, the cabin can accommodate four adults with adequate head, shoulder and leg room.
Boot space is 196 litres, small by class standards, but it can be expanded by dropping the rear seats to create 780 litres though the load floor is not flat. On the plus side, there are large door pockets, a useful bin in the centre console and a roomy glovebox. On the entry level Touch model, standard kit is limited but does include remote locking and powered front windows, LED running lights, a USB point, auto emergency braking, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring. To get features such as automatic air-conditioning and connectivity you have to move up the range. For those on a limited budget or for people who perhaps want a city car as a second-car runabout, the C1 makes a lot of sense. It looks stylish, is neat and nimble, offers low running costs and has excellent fuel economy.

Manchester City back in the Champions League competition! THE BLUES: Their twoyear ban is now over. THE Blues have successfully overturned their twoyear ban from European club competitions. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that the club are cleared of ‘disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions.’ UEFA issued the ban in February after ruling City had committed ‘serious breaches’ of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016. In delivering the ruling on Monday June 13, CAS said City did “fail to coop-
erate with UEFA authorities” but overturned the decision by UEAF’s club financial control body (CFCB) to ban them. A club spokesman said the decision was “validation of the club’s position and the body of evidence that it was able to present. “The club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered,” he said. UEFA said it noted there was “insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold
all of the CFCB’s conclusions in this specific case and that many of the alleged breaches were time-barred.” The governing body added: “Over the last few years, Financial Fair Play has played a significant role in protecting clubs and helping them become financially sustainable and UEFA and the European Club Association remain committed to its principles.” Cas said also that the fine will be cut from €30m (£26.9m) to €10m (£9m approx).
Manu moves to Sale MANU TUILAGI has completed his switch from Leicester Tigers to Gallagher Premiership rivals Sale Sharks. The 29-year-old will keep his England career alive by staying on home soil, after agreeing a deal with Sale that runs until the end of the 2020/2021 campaign. The 43-cap England centre was a free agent after rejecting a 25 per cent pay cut and leaving Leicester Tigers, the club he joined as a teenager. Tuilagi was sacked by Leicester last week following his decision not to sign a new contract on reduced terms in line with the league’s revised salary cap rules. Talks between Tuilagi, Sale and
Leicester on Friday confirmed the centre was a free agent and available to sign immediately, with an agreement reached over the weekend for him to become the latest high-profile addition at the AJ Bell Stadium. “We contacted Manu’s agent and Leicester Tigers last week to discuss the player’s current position,” said Sale rugby director Diamond. “After discussions on Friday, all parties Leicester Tigers, Manu Tuilagi and Sale Sharks - agreed the player was a free agent and able to enter into negotiations with another club.”
