A C O S TA B L A N C A community is behind what has become a national initiative to help in the fight against Covid-19 with the potential to raise almost €2 million. ‘The Last Peseta’ appeal was launched by a group of people from Elche, known as Vida Collective, which now has the backing of the council and is about to spread its reach across Spain offering us all the chance to do our bit. The idea behind the solidarity initiative is to collect all of those forgotten pesetas tucked away in drawers and under beds, and change them for euros before they are wiped out completely on December 31. And it’s not just #YoMeCorono which will benefit, the pro-
ceeds will also be shared between the Fundacion Lucha Contra el Sida (Fight Against AIDS Foundation) and Feder (Spanish Federation of Rare Diseases). One of the founders of the appeal, Emilio Fernández, said the i d e a c a m e a b o u t when the deadline for exchanging pesetas was announced, having been replaced by the euro in March 2020. “Our goal is to improve the society in which we live and solve problems, even more so in times like the one we currently find ourselves in.” Emilio added: “We

gether those few coins that we all have, we can do something great.” Pledging Elche Council’s support to the scheme, Councillor Mariano Valera said: “We must support campaigns which are born in our town and extend to the rest of Spain. “According to the

so let’s look for those pesetas that are lost in drawers and join this solidarity initiative.” Collection boxes are already in place across Elche, and over the next week or so, will be placed in various points in towns and cities across Spain. La Mata, and after a great job by the councillor of Mercados, we are opening with 35 food and cleaning stalls. “As happens at the weekly market in Torrevieja, the use of masks is mandatory for both customers and
merchants, and local police security devices and civil protection volunteers will be present.” The market will have all security guarantees and capacity control, and there will be signage to indicate social distancing rules.

Ready for anything ORIHUELA’S mayor Emilio Bascuñana and Emergencies councillor Victor Valverde recently revealed the municipality’s emergency strategies for this summer. “We are doing everything within our reach to regain the confidence of the local population and visitors so that services and activities which generate jobs and are part of our way of life can return to normal,” Bascuñana declared. As this is a joint undertaking by the Emergencies department and Proteccion Civil, Bascuñana and Valverde were accompanied at the presentation by Proteccion Civil coordinator Pepe Andugar. Three more people have been assigned to Proteccion Civil duties, complementing the four who are already available and will be reinforced by volunteers each weekend throughout the summer, Valverde explained. Their principal tasks will centre on firewatching and fire-prevention in the wooded areas of Sierra de Orihuela, Sier-

VISIT ELCHE and the Department of Environment are busy promoting the move after it was agreed by the local government board, with the “aim of eliminating tobacco consumption in this virgin coastal area of the municipality.” Councillor Esther Díez, said: “This is an informative, non-sanctioning action to promote healthy lifestyle habits and respect for our environment.” The objective is to “help people enjoy a life without tobacco,” encourage ex-
emplary behaviour by the adult population that positively influences children and to respect the environment. Signs will be dotted around the area to raise public awareness and there will be a campaign to run alongside the implementation of the changes. Díez added: “Making Elche a green municipality includes promoting this healthy lifestyle and raising awareness about the negative effects of tobacco on human health and the pollution it produces on our natural resources.”

A WOUNDED loggerhead turtle found itself stranded on a beach in Elche, to the surprise and concern of beachgoers who immediately went to its aid. The chelonian had numerous injuries after becoming entangled in fishing nets and tackle. Bathers on Carabassí beach in Elche tried to do their best for the stricken turtle before Local Police arrived and took over. The protocol for stranded animals was activated and the turtle has since been transferred to Oceanogràfic de València where it will be cared for and helped on the road to recovery.

SPANGLES Ladies’ Harmony Chorus has made its comeback after lockdown with an appearance on Spanish TV. Despite a planned trip to compete in Belgium being cancelled, the San Javier-based chorus management team and musical director set about keeping the chorus engaged during what was to be 15 weeks of isolation. Valerie Lynch had just taken over as Musical Director, and the qualified vocal coach and trained opera singer, offered one-to-one coaching on a voluntary basis and almost every member of the chorus signed up. They had a weekly ‘Happy Hour’ Zoom meeting and many took part in a virtual chorus tag and a full virtual version
of John Lennon’s Imagine which they released to great acclaim. They then searched for an outdoor venue to rehearse and decided on Kinita Restaurant & Beach Club in San Javier. Renovated by its new owners, Kinita, with its backdrop of the Mar Menor, is an idyllic place to rehearse and Murcia 7 TV was keen to film Spangles rehearsing. Baritone, Conchita, stole the show with her lively and funny interview, even getting the interviewer to audition for the chorus, and the 15-minute Spangles spot was televised last week. Mask facts if leaving your community ALTHOUGH wearing a protective face mask is not currently obligatory at all times in the Valencian community, we must stress to anybody venturing outside of this area that this is not the case everywhere. For example, anybody travelling to Andalucia, as of Wednesday, July 15, anyone aged six or older must wear a mask at all times in public spaces, as this is the new law that has been decreed by the President of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno. This new policy will ensure that masks be worn at all times when using public spaces, even if the 1.5-metre social distance can be upheld, and even if you are outdoors. In Andalucia, masks will be mandatory when taking walks on the beach, however, if you are sat with your social group on your beach
beds you will not be forced to wear it, as long as you maintain the 1.5-metre safety distance. Furthermore, you do not have to wear a mask when swimming. However, whilst walking from the beach to your car, your mask must be on. In restaurants, this rule will be exempt when eating, drinking or smoking and sat at your table with your family or friends, however once leaving the table to go inside or leaving an establishment you will be required to wear it.
Whilst driving a private vehicle a protective mask will be compulsory if you are travelling with anybody who does not reside with you. In Murcia, wearing a mask is only mandatory when you cannot keep an interpersonal distance of more than 1.5 metres. The Balearics have also made a ruling that it is mandatory to wear masks in all public spaces except the beach and the pool. If you are caught breaking this new regulation you may face fines of up to €100.

ORGANIC GROWTH THE agricultural sector in the Valencia region, like others, is going through a major crisis and many farmers are looking for new outlets. One of these is organic production which, in the first half of the year, has significantly increased across the region. So much so that this type of crop now accounts for more than 18.2 per cent of the entire produce with more than 8,800 hectares occupied with organic crops. And the growth is being attributed to public demand for healthier products. Héctor López, an organic producer from the Vall d’Albaida region, has been working in this sector for more than 25 years. He told Las Provincias that “during the months of confinement we have noticed an increase in sales of more than 40 per cent. People have opted for better products to

Resurge fears GPs in Valencia have warned health centres are not ready for a Covid-19 flare-up. The Forum of Primary Care Doctors of the Valencian Community (Fomap-CV) surveyed 611 family doctors and paediatrics, and found that 67 per cent believe their clinic ‘is not prepared for a Covid19 outbreak.’ Meanwhile, 86 per cent claim they have not received the ‘technological resources’ promised by the Conselleria de Sanidad to carry out telematic consultations after the health crisis. Spokeswoman and president of the Valencian Society for Family and Community Medicine (Sovamfyc), María Ángeles
Medina, said the results reflect the “disappointment and lack of confidence” of doctors. In addition, a third of the doctors surveyed said they have never been given a written protocol regarding de-escalation in Primary Care, with 38 per cent saying they have, although not from the beginning of the pandemic. Only 17 per cent said they have a ‘clear and concise’ protocol. When asked if they have had sufficient and adequate protection material to deal with the pandemic, 72 per cent replied ‘currently’ and 18 per cent said they have ‘never’ had enough.

Leapy Lee Triumphs in Readers’ Poll DURING the time of lockdown here in Spain and for a short period after, it seemed that the expatriate community were revelling in the concept of a new normal in which neighbours helped and supported each other and joined each other on balconies to applaud the fantastic work of healthcare professionals. However, slowly but surely, as people have spent more time in isolation behind their keyboards and screens, there appears to be an insidious change. On social media, there seems to be a great deal of rather pointless arguments and sniping when people disagree with one opinion or another. It now seems that it’s not just confined to social media as recent defamatory comments made in other newspapers are a prime example of this trend. This has spurred Euro Weekly News on to take a serious
look at what we allow to appear in print. One important question we were forced to ask ourselves concerned long time columnist Leapy Lee and the opinion on whether he says what our readers think or is a reactionary voice of an outdated past. Euro Weekly, therefore, decided to give our valued
readers their say and created a reader’s poll simply asking whether it was time for Leapy to move on or let him have his say. The results were frankly staggering, with a massive 74 per cent approval rating from readers keeping the faith with our long-time controversial columnist. Leapy is his own man,
with very strong opinions about a number of things, and although he has lived in Mallorca for several years, he has never lost his affection for the United Kingdom and this is why he feels so strongly about the fact that it appears to have changed so much over the last few decades. In his younger days he
used to spend a lot of time in Ladbroke Grove during London’s swinging 60s and was a lover of the new music coming out of such clubs as the infamous Mangrove, he had many West Indian friends and joined in at the very first Notting Hill Carnival, which was a melting pot of London’s many cultures. He also enjoyed an eight-year stint in Saudi Arabia which he looks back on with great pleasure and insists he has no problems with immigration or Islam but absolutely can’t stand what he sees as the lack of gratitude and intent to assimilate once a small percentage of first and second-generation immigrants arrive in the UK. Leapy Lee may be Marmite to many but his weekly
observations are not likely to either bring the western world to its knees nor inspire a worldwide revolution. Therefore, thanks to you. our readers, Leapy is here to stay!

A FIGHT broke out on the metro in Valencia after a passenger bluntly refused to put a mask on even when all the other passengers were wearing theirs. The man, reportedly a Nigerian immigrant, of approximately 30 years of age, shrugged his shoulders when asked by other passengers on the packed train to don his mask on Saturday, July 11. After repeated requests, someone pressed the alarm button and an inspector was quickly on the scene. This is when it all kicked off, for no apparent reason the man lashed out at the inspector and reacted violently to the request, the situation worsened as other male passengers on the train tried to help out. Commuters looked on in disbelief as the group banged against the sides of the train as it navigated swiftly towards the next stop, many reportedly thought there must have been more to it and even theorised it could be terror-related!

ORIHUELA MAYOR: Emilio Bascuñana is calling for meeting with regional government. ORIHUELA’S mayor has called for an emergency meeting amid ‘heavy weather’ fears. Emilio Bascuñana has requested a meeting with the President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, to deal with two ‘major issues’ affecting Orihuela and the region of the Vega Baja. He wants to discuss the Plan Vega Renhace and the Territorial Action Plan, relating to the development of the municipality. Bascuñana said he “hopes the meeting will take place as soon as possible because it has been 10 months since storm DANA and we are concerned about the arrival of other
weather threats that may come in two months, and the fact that no infrastructure has been carried out to prevent further damage.” Also on the agenda will be a report from the Consell Valencià de Cultura, which has been rejected by Orihuela Council. The mayor added: “This report needs to be reviewed and meet its objective, it would be a pity not to do so and lose a historic opportunity. “The historical, artistic and cultural heritage of Orihuela must be recognised, cared for and managed as it deserves to contribute all its potential as a dynamic element of activity and employment.”

ALL HANDS ON DECK: Nine planes and helicopters were involved in extinguishing the fires. UP to 150 emergency personnel were involved in tackling two separate forest fires, one of them inaccessible by land, in the Cerro Gordo area of Caravaca de la Cruz in Murcia region. The 112 Region of Murcia received more than 100 calls alerting them to ‘a large column of smoke’ in the area on Thursday, July 9, from 2.10pm. Firefighters from the Consortium for Fire Fighting and Rescue of the Region of Murcia were despatched along with environmental officers, forest brigade helicopter and
brigade, Rapid Intervention Unit, Local Police and Civil Protection volunteers. Two amphibious planes were also requested from the Ministry while the air resources coordination plane of the General Directorate for Citizen Security and Emergencies was later replaced by an Albacete coordination plane. In total, nine aerial resources were pulled in to extinguish the flames. All access to the area was cut off while emergency services contained the fires.
Life savers THE efforts of four Spanish cops who saved the life of a heart attack victim in Valencia will be officially recognised. The town hall of Betera has unanimously approved the individual ‘public congratulation’ of four Local Police officers who resuscitated the 27year-old. The official recognition will be made by the Generalitat Valenciana
in honour of ‘a service of extraordinary difficulty or importance, which showed relevant professional and civic qualities.’ Councillor for Police, Julio Inés, praised the actions carried out by Officers Ana María Palacios, Juan Martínez, Francisco Pons and Carlos de la Llave. The events occurred on January 2, 2020. The rapid action of the officers, who gave the victim a cardiac massage and used a defibrillator to restore his heartbeat, “made it possible for the young man to recover his vital signs and not suffer serious consequences,” said Inés. SAMU then arrived and took the victim to a nearby hospital.
Cop spat A PLAIN-CLOTHES cop in Murcia was spat at while arresting a suspected thief who allegedly warned him he “was going to make him lose his job.” The 21-year-old, who has reportedly been arrested more than 20 times for theft, is accused of stealing €35 from a shop, which the officer apparently found on his possession. The owner of the establishment claims the detainee, known as MB, entered the shop, went to the till and took the cash before fleeing. A police source said that because he has been arrested so many times, he knows all of the officers, even in plainclothes, and has insulted them in the street in the past.

For the people of the city, it seems incomprehensible that bars, restaurants and cafes in the normally bustling Plaza de la Virgen would close their doors in August, but this is the case with many saying they will then sit it out and wait for the economy to revive. Fani Zhu is the owner of Aromas del Espresso and told Las Provincias that “merchants of Chinese origin do not usually close for vacations and are always there to serve the public,” but added that “when that limit is reached, it is because something is wrong.” She told the Spanish newspaper: “In August
we will close because income is low and the effort does not compensate.” She has already begun reducing opening hours “because few meals were being served.” Meanwhile, Juan Tamarit of Vintara Tavern, said he “won’t close because it is difficult to reenter an ERTE, but the billing is only 30 per cent and I have had to remove 20 products from the menu.” He said he has drawn up a new menu and has “removed paella because there are no tourists.” The only meats offered are steak and tapas, “because I have had to send the food to a soup kitchen.” Raquel Rodríguez from the Bretonne Annaper creperie told the newspaper “for the first time in 15 years I will have to partially open in August. I will close during the day and open from 7pm.”

Shark pup births VALENCIA Oceanografic has announced the largest aquarium in Europe's very first birth of eight grey sharks. The pups belong to Mama Alice who has lived at Valencia Oceanografic since 2003, weighs 100 kilos and is about two and a half meters long. Both mum and pups are said to be "perfect condition", although staff had to take rapid action to ensure the newborns - with an average weight of 1.4 kilos and measuring around 45 cm - were not preyed on by other species. A Facebook post reads: "The quick intervention of our professionals, who activated the protocol of action and urgent control, saved them from a possible attack from other animals. "The eight small, five females and three males, have been moved to the quarantine area where they have already started eating. This birth has been quite a biological event!!"

Bathers at risk SWIMMERS continue to ignore Covid-19 warnings and flock to fresh water springs in Mula, Murcia, prompting council calls for security and surveillance. Bathers have been advised to avoid Fuente Caputa, due to the risk of coronavirus contagion, but ‘hundreds of people continue to be reckless’ every weekend, despite a lack of security measures. Predator caught A CONVICTED sexual predator has been arrested in Cartagena, Murcia, for the alleged sexual abuse of a 13year-old girl. According to sources, the detainee, already has five restraining orders for crimes against five victims, four of them minors. According to the National Police, the 45year-old had known the alleged victim since February 2019, and had apparently abused her ‘repeatedly.’ It was during one assault in a courtyard the girl’s screams for help alerted several neighbours. Sources claim the detainee ‘accessed his minor victims through deception, and deliberately caused encounters’ with the girls, ‘all selected from their social, neighbourhood and family environment.’

Diver found
SEARCH: The body of missing 18-year-old was discovered in Aguilas.
THE body of a missing diver, 18, has been found on a beach in Aguilas, Murcia, after an overnight search. Divers from the Special Group of Underwater Activities of the Guardia Civil recovered the deceased’s lifeless body on Sunday morning, July 12, after an air and sea search. The Emergency Coordination Centre 112 received a call at 9.28pm on Saturday, July 11,
warning there were two people having trouble getting out of the water off the coast of Matalentisco. A 30-year-old male was rescued and attended by 061 health personnel at the scene. A search party involving 30 Local Police officers and Civil Protection set about trying to find the missing teenager, with the help of a General Directorate of Emergencies helicopter,
Guardia Civil vessels, Red Cross and Maritime Rescue. As the search progressed, the air rescue group from the Fire and Rescue Consortium of the Region of Murcia and divers from the Special Group of Underwater Activities of the Guardia Civil were called in. The young man’s body was found at 10.08am near Cape Rocoso, south of Cocon beach, on the coast of Aguilas.

Parador Hotels on the up THE state-owned hotel chain, Paradores, is currently experiencing more reservations for July and August than it did last year in 2019, before the health crisis. As of July 9, the chain has sold 3,179 rooms more than they did during the same time period last year. For the month of July, this means 2,711 more rooms than in 2019, and in August there are 468 more reserved stays than last year. The publicly owned company highlights that most of their establishments are located in remote places and that they are medium or small in size, making them “the safest tourist destination to spend vacations. “Sales are working very well because the Spanish people trust Paradores. “We are a very reliable destination and we will be exemplary to ensure the safety of our customers and employees. MODERNA AND ROVI have signed a collaboration agreement for the largescale manufacture of the modern mRNA candidate vaccine against Covid19 which will be produced at the Rovi facilities in Madrid The Moderna Chief Technology Operations and Quality Officer, Juan Andres, has announced that “Moderna is committed to helping address the Covid-19 crisis. We are pleased to partner with Rovi to potentially deliver
hundreds of millions of doses of the finished mRNA-1273 vaccine, once it is approved, and help address the need for a vaccine against Covid-19 worldwide.” As part of the agreement, Rovi will fill the vials and acquire a new production line as well as the equipment for the formulation, filling, automatic visual inspection and labelling to support the production of hundreds of millions of doses of the candidate vaccine if all goes to plan.
In principle, this will serve to supply markets outside the United States as early as 2021. Rovi will also hire additional personnel to carry out manufacturing and production operations. The lab has assured, “Rovi’s experience as a global manufacturer of pharmaceuticals and its expertise in filling and finishing will be an important collaboration for us in establishing dedicated supply chains that can meet the needs of different countries and regions.”

Prison drama A PRISON guard almost lost an arm saving an inmate who appeared to have hung himself at Murcia’s Campos del Rio jail. According to workers’ association, Tu abandono me puede matar, the guard’s arm ‘could have been torn off’ as he prevented the ‘inmate from being decapitated by a mechanical door.’ The association confirmed that on Friday, July 10, the prison official entered an isolation area where he found the inmate ‘hanging with sheets from bars of his cell.’ As the guard put his arm through the bars to undo the sheets, the me-

OFFICERS ARRESTED: The investigation has been ongoing since 2017.
TWO officers of the Guardia Civil have been detained for allegedly rigging contracts of police uniforms. Operation ‘Grapa’, as it was called saw the arrests of five other people, the main two officers indicted in the fraud are Colonel Juan Antonio Maroto and Lieutenant Colonel Alberto Martín Altube. The arrests are the result of an investigation in 2017, when 14 people - most of them officials - were arrested for rigging public contracts both in the General Directorate of the Police and in the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).
The investigations focus on the alleged rigging of public contracts in the General Directorate of the Guardia Civil, where a group of officials allegedly colluded with companies that were the beneficiaries of awards of various contracts, including police uniforms. The facts investigated, if proven, could constitute alleged crimes of a criminal organisation, influence peddling, embezzlement, fraud against public administrations, negotiations forbidden to public officials, prevarication, bribery, and money laundering - potentially leading to prison sentences.

Twin reflections By Damon Mitchell EURO WEEKLY NEWS recently spoke with Barbra Dean, an expat who is now based in Quesada about a book of poetry she has written with her sister whilst spending time in isolation. Barbra and Lydia are identical twins who have always enjoyed being together. However, they now live in different countries, Barbra in Spain and Lydia in Israel. They thought it would be nice in their later years to do something together especially as a legacy for their families. Barbra pointed out that “Over the years we have both kept diaries and also written professionally for various magazines and newspapers. We hit on the idea of a poetry book as we have composed many poems for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and other events,” and added “We write about life as we see it. The people written about all have a special place in our hearts.” Writing ‘Twin Reflections’ has been a rewarding experience for them both and has brought them closer again through the miles of living apart.
Barbra went on to explain that “I was Assistant Fashion Editor in SHE magazine arranging photography and fashion shows. “I also freelanced for many newspapers and magazines. Later on, working for a wellknown agony aunt, and answered all her mail.” She has also been a film extra appearing in many soaps for television, a lot of the time in the background of a pub pretending to drink Barbra has also written a book called ‘The Multicoloured Hat’ which has been translated into Spanish called ‘El Sombrero Multicolor,’ and although written for children, it is suitable for adults too who are learning either language. Cloning Fraud Unsure situation

A MASSIVE police investigation has resulted in the arrest of 94 criminals from across Spain who collaborated to steal over € 5 0 0 , 0 0 0 f ro m v i c tims’ bank accounts. The gang were part of a scheme that saw bank details, obtained by cloning mobile phone SIM chips, being used to access customers’ accounts, thereby allowing the transfer of monies out to
the gang’s own illegal accounts, one of the victims had €240,000 withdrawn. Those arrested are accused of defrauding a total of €504,800 from numerous victims from all over Spain. The operation was carried out in a coordinated way in 16 municipalities and ended with the arrest of 94 people; two other people were investigated but not detained. There were two house
searches, as well as the seizure of a large amount of computer equipment. Those arrested all had different roles in the scam, such as counterfeiters, go-fors (muleteers), and fences (launderers). They have been charged with crimes of fraud, money laundering, membership of a criminal group, and, in some cases, falsification of marriage documents.
THERE are currently 17 children of Spanish jihadis stranded in Syria and Spain is unsure of what to do about the situation. Whereas other European countries have adapted their policies to repatriate these minors and avoid their radicalisation, Spain has no clear cut way to deal with them. Families in Madrid have organised themselves to demand the return of the wives and children of these radicalised Spaniards. Countries like France, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany have indeed repatriated the children of these jihadis, up to 63 children and two adult women. Once they return to European soil, the adults must face the justice system
whilst the minors fall back into the custody of grandparents or the social services. The Save the Children branch in Spain has called on the countries of origin to safely repatriate these children and their families as this is part of their humanitarian obligations, outlined in the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Children. Keeping them in this environment makes them prone to the discourse of radicalisation and endangers their lives due to the lack of medicine, education and food in the country. Repatriating the children of the caliphate also helps to resolve this conflict and is positively favourable for international security in the future.

Pub Landlord takes measures to the extreme! SOME of the most difficult places to keep a safe distance are the places we want to frequent the most, theatres, cinemas, family gatherings, and of course the big one, the Pub. Most bars and restaurants have put into place protocols to attempt to keep the punters at a safe distance from the staff and each other by marking out the floor into zones, or spreading the tables out more, some have even gone so far as to put up actual plastic barriers on and around the tables! But there is one man who has taken this to what must be called ‘extreme’ measures. Pub Landlord John McFadden is the landlord of the Starr Inn, in the lovely town of St Just, in Cor nwall and he has his own rather unique way of keeping the punters from getting too close to the

tric fence! John was interviewed on America’s CNN network and he told them: “To protect staff, myself and my customers you
have to put in the metre(distancing rule in the UK), rule,” he said. McFadden said he wanted “to put some rope, or chain”
to make sure customers kept back from staff at the bar but couldn’t find suitable equipment. “I thought, this is not going to keep them back,” he said. So instead, he opted for the fence to see “what that does.” For most of the time the electric fence is not switched on, but the punters don’t know that! McFadden said: “It’s not on but it’s got the desired effect that everybody thinks it’s on and they keep well away from it. It’s the fear factor. It’s working very well,” when asked what was the customers’ reaction to the possibility of getting a shock if they got too close to the bar, he said: “It was quite comical. We’re in a rural area so everybody knows what an electric fence is. I got a little sign too on it - ‘electric, danger’.”

THE Mossos d’Esquadra in Catalonia have arrested a 45-year-old man who sold computers only to hack into the webcams and record customers. The police identified this resident of Vallbona d’Anoia after linking him directly to the complaint of a woman, who in late January, had reported that someone was controlling the camera on her laptop. The victim had bought two computers from the man who had picked them up from a landfill and resold them. The police verified that the computers had a hidden programme installed which could be used to record videos and photographs. They found evi-

dence that it was the creepy computer seller who was controlling this function. Once they were able to search the seller’s house, they found a large number of computers and equipment; therefore they do not rule out that there are more victims of this perverted scheme. Shortly after purchasing the computer, the victim found a series of images and videos of her, that the seller had taken without her noticing, and this confirmed that she had a hidden programme installed in the device. After learning of this chilling incident, the officers intervened a large number of telephones and computer equipment from the vendor’s home.
Tragic accident
FATAL ACCIDENT: Three elderly women have passed away. THREE elderly women who were taking a walk in the municipality of Gomecello, Salamanca, died after being hit by a vehicle on July 8. The accident occurred at kilometre 220 of the National 620 road. All three women died at the scene and emergency services could do nothing to save their lives when they arrived. The driver of the vehicle, a 38-year-old man had been tested for alcohol and drugs, but the results came back negative. Police do not rule out the fact that the women could have been walking out past the shoulder of the road without wearing reflective vests. The three women, Pilar, Loli and Julia were all widows and residents of Pedrosillo El Ralo. Every day the trio would go out for a walk together.

As supposed figureheads of democracy and true freedom of speech, the legislate powers have to be subjected to critics and it is their job to take it and not avoid it by disqualifying the press, reporters or columnists. Mr Iglesias and Spokesman Pablo Echenique seem to have forgotten that they are no longer TV commentators and that they are now in positions of power. However, they have even created a campaign for the press and reporters

who have questioned them with what they deem as uncomfortable questions and coined it the ‘Press Sewers.’ These attitudes are more from totalitarian leaders, as when something disturbs them they will try to eliminate it from the public opinion. The worrying outlook is the way that freedom of speech and movement is being handled all around the world which gives the appearance that Covid has given a carte blanche to a totalitarian mandate.

Car Sharing UBER in Spain has entered into an agreement with Catalan based company Social Car to operate a car sharing scheme in seven cities throughout Spain although it will still offer drivers with ‘mini cabs.’ The concept of car sharing which sees owners using a website to allow drivers to rent their cars for a set period of time and even Santander bank has launched its own version, Wabi. There are price benefits and also this is seen as a form of sustainability resulting in fewer cars on the road.

Spanish cash machines may be replaced THE future of bank owned and run cash machines in Spain may see a major change post Covid19 as Euro Automatic Cash (EAC), owned jointly by Santander (through its Banco Popular subsidiary) and Credit Mutuel wants to shake up the sys tem. It believes that due to its size, it is in a position to offer a cheaper ser vice to banks than they can manage if running their own cash machines and it has a vision of purchasing the rights to supply bank machines and then consolidate them. I’m trying to make a point
THE British people are frightened. Many I have spoken to feel lost, adrift and vulnerable. At a time when they need the support and strength of their leaders, the older citizens in particular, feel they have been abandoned to a whole new creed of unfamiliar values and customs that appear to take complete precedence over their own. Is this not a terrible indictment of the UK authorities? Those who are supposed to look after the well-being of the citizens they are paid to protect and serve? Today I was talking to a friend, who told me he was recently attending a local hospital where he entered into a conversation with one of the resident doctors. The subject got around to the Covid virus and specifically as to why there were reports that a considerable proportion of ethnic minorities seemed to be more affected than their white counterparts? The doctor told him that in his, and most of his colleagues’ professional opinion, the reasons were that many from ethnic areas hadn’t followed the directions of the authorities. For some time they had simply carried on as normal, and, re the Leicestershire factory incident, basically taken

hardly any notice whatsoever of social distancing. But this is not the point I am endeavouring to make. My friend also told me that when the doctor began relating these opinions, his voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper and he began looking nervously around, in case he was being overheard. Is that not a frightening and completely unacceptable state of affairs? Here is an intelligent professional
man in an important and respected position, actually afraid to be overheard stating what he considered the truth, in case he is branded a racist and possibly puts his job on the line. And have no doubt whatsoever, had he been overheard by anyone who decided they were ‘offended,’ he would almost certainly become the subject of some form of enquiry and could indeed have lost his job.
Someone really needs to take all this soul destroying, opinion muzzling, racist nonsense by the scruff of the neck and shake some common sense into it. It is being used as a weapon. It is successfully eroding the very spirit of the UK and its people. The expression ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a blatant suppression of free speech. It is plainly confrontational and presents no opportunity of recourse or debate whatsoever. By contrast, woe betide those who choose to quite lawfully display the slogan ‘White lives Matter’ or even ‘All Lives Matter’; they have been chastised and dropped on by the law like a ton of bricks, either for racial incitement or at best far right activism. No wonder the indigenous British public is confused and worried. These double standards need to be addressed and rectified; before it is too late. The people I actually do feel sorry for are the genuine immigrants, who are attempting to integrate and truly are an enriching addition to their new, free and generous country. Do I need a Spanish Will?
IT’S a subject that no-one likes talking about - but it is a conversation that everyone needs to have. Have you got your affairs in order if anything should happen to you? Estimates vary, but it is generally agreed that around two thirds of British people do not have a Will. And if a British national who owns assets in Spain dies without a Will, matters can and do - become rather complicated. The Spanish legal system is very different when it comes to the inheritance procedure compared to other countries like the UK. It is also worth noting that Spanish inheritance law also varies from region to region. Legal experts at Sun Lawyers, a Spanish law firm with more than 30 years of experience and several offices across the Costa
MAKING A WILL: Ensures the inheritance procedure is straightforward and less costly. Blanca, say that makes it vital to get the right advice. Its spokesman says: “You really must have a Spanish Will if you have property or any other assets over here. “We recently got a letter from a gentleman about the sad story of his wife passing away and she had not made a Spanish Will
involving her property in this country. “That has sadly seen extra stress for him at a time when he does not need it, and it has also cost him thousands of euros to sort everything out.” Having a Spanish Will ensures that the inheritance procedure is straightforward and less costly.
EU citizens living in Spain, as well as a number of non-EU countries, can now choose whether the law of their home country or their country of residence applies. If a foreign resident dies without leaving a Will or making an official declaration on which law they wish to apply, the law of the country where they resided for the last five years will apply. If your estate is dealt with under Spanish inheritance law, forced heirship rules apply known as the Law of Obligatory Heirs in Spain. This means there are restrictions on how you distribute your estate, as a specific percentage needs to be set aside for certain relatives. If you die without leaving a Spanish Will, the laws of intestate succession apply. In Spanish succession law, this means that the estate will be inherited by the following -
taking into account the Law of Obligatory Heirs: • children of the deceased • if there are no children, the parents • if no children or parents, the surviving spouse • if there are none of these, then the next closest blood relatives (up to a fourth-grade limit in the family tree) • if there are no legal beneficiaries from any of these groups, then the Spanish state inherits the estate! Making a Spanish Will can also help sort out what levels of inheritance tax are likely to be paid. The rules and Spanish inheritance tax rates vary according to the relationship between the donor and beneficiary, although generally unmarried couples and stepchildren pay more tax than spouses and natural children.

My farton days are over BARRY DUKE ‘EAT any more of those and you’ll start looking like one,’ said hubby Marcus as he watched me shell a boiled egg. I snapped ‘It’s precisely because I want to stop looking like Humpty Dumpty that I’m scoffing these things!’ This exchange occurred after my decision to radically change my eating habits. I discovered to my horror that I was having trouble buttoning up all of my lightweight summer shirts. A trip to the nearest clothing store confirmed that, during the Covid-19 lockdown, I had gained weight around my midriff and the only shirts that would fit were XL. Normally I’m a medium. I did better than most during the lockdown because I was accustomed to working from
SWEET TREATS: After constantly munching pastries it’s hardly surprising I put on weight during lockdown. home, but the only exercise I was getting was moving from the computer to the fridge which I’d filled with stuff like cheese dips and chocolate items I’d carefully avoided in the past. Worse still, I developed a taste for pastries, especially the Jesús brand. Given that I was eating heavy dinners at around midnight, and
munching chocolate and fartons at around 6am before going back to bed and sleeping until midday, it’s hardly surprising that I began getting truly out of shape. After the lockdown eased, I typed ‘quick ways to lose weight’ into Google. There I found the Indian Boiled Egg Diet which advised me that the two-
week plan requires you to have a maximum of two boiled eggs per day with other nutritious foods. ‘Eggs are loaded with high-quality proteins vitamins A, D, E, B12 … These nutrients help build muscle mass, improve metabolic rate and brain function, protect you from heart disease and macular degeneration, produce hormones, and
strengthen the immune system. ‘When you consume eggs, you consume proteins, which take longer to digest. Hence, you will feel full for a long duration. The proteins also help build lean muscle mass, which, in turn, helps accelerate your metabolism.’ After vowing to try it, with some trepidation I stepped onto my Huawei ‘smart’ scale - it connects to a phone and tracks all changes in weight, body fat and muscle - and found to my surprise that, between August last year and the end of June 2020, I’d only gained three pounds. But these were concentrated around my midriff, hence the difficulty in buttoning up my shirts. Thanks to five days of the egg diet and some vigorous exercise I’ve shed two of those three pounds, and, by the end of the fortnight, with luck, I should be back to being fit, tanned, sexy and slim. Well, even at 73 one can dream, can’t one?

Want an Apartment on the Beach? MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man NINE years after moving here permanently we made the major decision to not have any assets in the UK so we sold our family home there. We purchased a couple of beach apartments to rent here so that we would get a small income from short term holiday rentals. This has worked well for us as we did everything legally - got licences etc and got them up to government spec. Fast forward to the last few months - everything stopped and all the bookings we had cancelled. This wasn’t too much of a problem because most people were happy to rearrange for later on this year or just wait till next year. We, of course, have a booking form which clearly states that the deposit is non-refundable and we recommend that our clients have travel insurance. One or two people asked for their money back. We pointed out the Ts and Cs and said we would gladly provide all the required documentation so they could
claim on their insurance. ‘Oh, we haven’t got any.’ We explained that was their problem. It can’t become our problem and we can’t be the only losers because they haven’t taken travel insurance … can we? So not only have we got empty apartments with no idea when they will rent again, to add insult to injury some toe rag decides to break in and squat for a few days. He used the washing machine, shower, bedrooms, towels, and sheets and nicked the TV on his way out. Here’s a bit of info for you. If someone squats in your place and you don’t report it within 24 hrs they have rights and it’s not just a case of sending the police round to evict them. To be honest though the police were fantastic and after we made a denuncia they sent along a forensic team to check for fingerprints. We once had a burglary in the UK and the police didn’t send anyone as they didn’t have the manpower. They told us to claim on our insurance and gave us a crime number. The insurance company here were brilliant too. They fixed all the locks and helped replace the damaged doors and broken glass. So, anyone want to buy an apartment on the beach?

OUR VIEW Got it infamy THE latest Hollywood blockbuster gracing our screens and our papers seems to be ‘The Life Story of Johnny Depp’ or this is what Depp’s libel case against the Sun newspaper appears to be turning into. For those who have missed any of it, Johnny Depp has accused his ex-wife Amber Heard of being a ‘sociopathic’ abuser and denied that he is a ‘wife-beater,’ as was printed in the Sun. Whilst Heard claims that the actor attacked her, has a severe drink and drugs problem, and flew into fits of jealous rage. Videos and photographs have been used in evidence which in some opinions, look completely staged by Heard to show Depp in a poor light and goad him into interaction. On reading excerpts from the court transcript, Depp has already adopted the role of his Captain Jack character foregoing simple ‘no’s’ and ‘yes’s’ during being grilled about what happened on a flight where it is said he kicked a chair which in turn hit her and choosing to answer: “That’s quite a stretch of her imagination.” Or “No ma’am I wouldn’t,” and when asked about verbally abusing her on the same flight, “Not under those circumstances I would not. There are possibilities where that kind of thing might come out of my mouth depending on what came out of her mouth prior, but I did not go into a rage on the flight in front of all these people.” As for Heard’s role, there are witness statements and recordings that include her saying, “You got hit... but I did not punch you. I did not f**king deck you. I f**king was hitting you.” Also in a quote from Depp, “Amber severed my finger with the second of two thrown vodka bottles at me in the early afternoon of Sunday March 8.” Whatever you take from it, these are dangerous allegations and violence is no laughing matter. If you choose to think that a young lady was trying to build her acting career by marrying a huge star, abusing him until divorce which in turn elevated her profile and leave with some of his money. Well, that’s your decision. You might also think that a drunken, drug-taking rich man made himself an easy target and that made him angry enough to break a bottle of wine and get angry. We all deserve our opinion.

Hi Editor, The call from British residents for the government to use our Army would not be needed if the UK police force did their job properly. Here in Spain, we do not need to resort to using the Army, since the Local Police, National Police and Guardia Civil keep law and order to protect law-abiding citizens. In England, the police politely asked someone trying to burn the Union Jack flag on our London Cenotaph “please desist and come down.” Here in Madrid, we all know what the law enforcement officers would say and do, so I much prefer to live here in relative safety. Power of hope Dear Euro Weekly News, My god!!! Is the council crazy? The most important place in the summer, for tourism, is the beach. Both Lampola and Platgetes are in a condition like I have never seen before in my 22 years as a resident. Lampola especially is a total disgrace. Access to the sea is very nearly impossible. Today I have seen numerous people risking serious injury attempting to enter the water, and my wife and I have had to assist several elderly people, trying with a lot of serious difficulties, to enter and come out of the sea. We have also witnessed many families leaving the area after a very short time, with small children, being denied safe access to the water in the soaring heat of the day. The townsfolk and restaurateurs etc are about to have one of the worst, if not the worst, trading year in recent times and yet the council is doing nothing to help their cause, by allowing the beach to be in this truly disgraceful state. Tourists, if there are any to come, will not be best pleased and this could have a knock-on effect for several years to come. The Blue Flag is flying in total contempt for its meaning. All this aside, the state of some of the approaching streets and the lack of cleaning and removal of sporadic rubbish is also something not to be proud of. One in four cancer patients treated with immunotherapy has a more effective and less toxic progress
ALICANTE, July 6, 2020. One in four cancer patients who undergo immunotherapy treatment has a more effective and less toxic progress, likewise continues to have good outcome years after going into remission, as stated by Dr Antonio Brugarolas, head of Cancer Platform at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja. Clinical studies conducted over the past five years have shown the significant effect of immunotherapy on the survival of cancer patients and it is transforming the lives of many patients while opening the door to further research. A s f o r which type of cancer, im-
munotherapy can be applied, Dr Joseba Rebollo, a specialist from Cancer Platform at Quirónsalud Alic a n t e a n d T o r r e v i e j a , explains that, although it can be applied to all types of tumours, it is head and neck, lung, bladder, kidney, breast, melanoma, skin cancer, liver cancer, lymphomas or leukaemias that are showing the best outcomes in the studies. “This benefit,” points out Dr Rebollo, “has been observed in the metastatic stage and in many cases also in the early stage of these tumours, which has led to a high expectation that it can be introduced in earlier stages of
the disease and increase the chances of cure.” How does immunotherapy work? Drugs used in immunotherapy are administered intravenously over repeated sessions every two or three weeks. “These drugs,” says Dr Brugarolas, “are responsible for generating an immune system reaction against tumours leading to the destruction of tumours, this reaction does not occur naturally in cancer patients because the tumour prevents it.” In addition to the immunotherapy drugs marketed by the industry, new specific immunotherapy
treatments are being developed that use cells from the patient’s own immune system to fight cancer. cure if administered on a standalone basis,” says the head of the Cancer Platform at Quirónsalud Alicante and Torrevieja. “It does increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy, certainly helps to cure many cancers and undoubtedly improves the quality of life of patients. “What is truly essential is to have a multidisciplinary approach in cancer treatments and to understand that a single speciality does not cover the entire procedure, instead different departments must work with a patient simultaneously and permanently, collaborating with each other.”

HOLIDAY DESTINATION: Santa Pola has launched a summer campaign to attract national tourists. SANTA POLA’S Tourism Council has launched a promotional campaign to attract national tourists to the beautiful fishing and tourist municipality on the Costa Blanca. The ‘Santa Pola Te Espera’ campaign joins others carried out this year: #SantaPolaTeCuida, highlighting the safety and hygiene of the establishments, and #SantaPolaTeLoLleva, to promote take away and delivery as ‘formulas for gastronomic diversification.’ #SantaPolaTeEspera will initially seek to attract tourists from the province of Alicante, Murcia and other areas around Santa Pola, while a second phase will be geared towards the rest of Valencia, and inland areas such as Albacete, Madrid and Castilla La Mancha. Mostly online, the campaign consists

C1 is priced from €12,000 (£10,810) and comes in three and five-door form, all models using the same engine, a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit offering 71 hp, and mated to a standard five-speed gearbox. It’s a frugal engine delivering average fuel economy of 20.8 kpl (58.8 mpg), though the downside of that is a slow 0-100 kph time of 14.0 seconds. Top speed is 200 kph (100 mph) and emissions are 108 g/km. Out and about, the C1 has a light-touch easy-drive feel which makes it agile for parking. On the open road, ride quality is comfortable and cornering is poised. At speed there is a little more

Citroen C1 Touch engine and wind noise than some rivals, but it is not too intrusive. Overall it has a smooth pleasant driving ambiance and is especially nimble in urban traffic. Revised styling gives the C1 a chic appearance and it has perhaps a touch more youthful personality than rivals such as the Hyundai10 and Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 108. Inside, the cabin can accommodate four adults with adequate head, shoulder and leg room. Boot space is 196 litres, small by class standards, but it can be expanded by dropping the rear seats to create 780 litres though the load floor is not flat. On the entry level Touch model, standard kit is limited but does include remote locking and powered
front windows, LED running lights, a USB point, auto emergency braking, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring. To get features such as automatic air-conditioning and connectivity you have to move up the range. For those on a limited budget or for people who perhaps want a city car as a second-car runabout, the C1 makes a lot of sense. It looks stylish, is neat and nimble, offers low running costs and has excellent fuel economy.

Manchester City back in the Champions League competition! THE BLUES: Their twoyear ban is now over. THE Blues have successfully overturned their twoyear ban from European club competitions. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that the club are cleared of ‘disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions.’ UEFA issued the ban in February after ruling City had committed ‘serious breaches’ of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016. In delivering the ruling on Monday June 13, CAS said City did “fail to coop-
erate with UEFA authorities” but overturned the decision by UEAF’s club financial control body (CFCB) to ban them. A club spokesman said the decision was “validation of the club’s position and the body of evidence that it was able to present. “The club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered,” he said. UEFA said it noted there was “insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold
all of the CFCB’s conclusions in this specific case and that many of the alleged breaches were time-barred.” The governing body added: “Over the last few years, Financial Fair Play has played a significant role in protecting clubs and helping them become financially sustainable and UEFA and the European Club Association remain committed to its principles.” Cas said also that the fine will be cut from €30m (£26.9m) to €10m (£9m approx).
