FORTY-NINE hopefuls applied for one of Villajoyosa’s four vacancies - two male, two female - in the town’s Local Police force. Ten of the applicants were women and, like their male counterparts, they must pass six tests. These include fitness, a psychotechnical evaluation, a theory exam, development exercises, knowledge of La Vila’s streets and proficiency in Valenciano. Aspirants must then pass a medical to assess their height, weight, sharp-sightedness, locomotor skills and digestive system. “These tests allow those interested in joining the Local Police to access the selection process,” said Villajoyosa’s mayor Andreu Verdu.

In the swim LA NUCIA resident Natalie Baker is currently in Madrid, training with Spain’s junior Synchronised Swimming Team. The 13-year-old belongs to the La Nucia Club Sincronizada, whose principal trainer is Antia Arias, and this is the first time one of their swimmers has taken part in a training meeting at national level. Natalie was selected to attend last March, after she was included in the 12 best swimmers in the 21st edition of the

Junior and Children’s Artistic Swimming Championships which were held in Castellon shortly before the State of Alarm was announced. Natalie is now training in Buitrago de Lozoya (Madrid) with 11 other synchronised swimmers from all over Spain, but must wait until the start of the next season for confirmation that she will be taking part in the Junior Synchronised Swimming Championships.

Paint job No water shortage CAMPELLO’S municipal cleaning service had to remove red plastic paint covering the head of the sculpture, Niña Leyendo (Girl reading), near the Almadraba beach. Her book and arm had been painted blue, but the vandalism was spotted by the Local Police in the early morning and cleaners soon restored the sculpture to its original state.

WATER has begun to flow spontaneously from Alcoy’s principal aquifer, El Molinar. El Molinar provides around 60 per cent of Alcoy’s domestic water and at present there is no need to use pumps to bring

it to the surface now that the water table has risen, explained city hall’s Public Works and Services councillor Jordi Martinez. This unexpected situation is the result of the persistent rain

that has fallen on 45 days in Alcoy since last January, with an accumulated 432.6 millilitres. Storm Gloria accounted for 184.4 millilitres of the total, which fell over a space of five days, Martinez revealed.

APAD gets its contract DENIA’S Animal Protection Association (APAD) finally won the contract to run the town’s municipal shelter. It was assumed that the association would continue collecting and maintaining Denia’s strays for the municipality as it had done for the last 26 years but a technical error in its tender put it out of the running for the €285,924 town hall contract. Luckily, APAD had a last-minute reprieve when Serproanimal, the other company bidding for the contract, failed to present its paperwork in time. “We are very happy to inform you that after a long period of struggle and insecurity the town hall agreed to award the contract to APAD,” the association announced last week. “APAD has fought for almost 30 years for the welfare of Denia’s animals, practising ‘zero kill’ all this time,” the association declared, expressing gratitude that the local government recognised the importance of animal welfare. The association thanked its members, volunteers, employees and supporters for their backing, with special thanks for the Valencian Community’s Animalist Coordinating Committee, specifically Angela Molina. “Without their help this would not have been possible,” APAD declared.

GIVE AND TAKE FINESTRAT’S Local Police will patrol sections of the CV-767 that were formerly the responsibility of the Guardia Civil. This affects the CV-767 between the Las Cabras and Avenida Finestrat but under the new agreement between both forces, the Local Police will also be responsible for rural roads inside the Finestrat boundary. “Thanks to our strategic location, job creation, the Bulevar shopping area and the town hall’s administrative agility, Finestrat’s growth over the last 10 years has created a continuous urban strip from La Cala as far as the Old Town,” said Finestrat’s mayor Juan Francisco Perez.

All Valencian Community primary care health centres will have “sufficient resources” to trace contacts linked to the trickle of cases, Barcelo said. Together with Covid-19 reinforcements, 422 people have al-

Thanks to a joint programme involving Javea Town Hall, the Generalitat, the Environment Ministry and the Diputacion provincial council the area is recovering from the forest fire that devasted 689 hectares of Granadella land in 2016. The project has a €461,000 budget that involves replanting the zone with fast-going native species to protect the soil

against erosion and accelerate natural regeneration. At the same time, experts are thinning out adult pines, seedling pines and other highly-flammable plants including gorse. The project is restoring and repairing the traditional drystone agricultural terracing which, as well as reducing the erosion encourages growth. This also ties in with a Generalitat project that set aside €300,000 to protect, conserve and maintain the region’s drystone tradition, declared an Asset of Local Relevance in 2016.

Parking paradise VILLAJOYOSA Town Hall has backtracked on an earlier decision to reintroduce paid parking. The contract to manage the municipality’s Zona Azul parking was cancelled last August because the town hall could not take on the concessionary company’s conditions. In May, the local government announced that it would resume paid parking this summer but sources quoted in the local Spanish media revealed that this had been delayed owing to staff and administrative issues resulting from the Covid-19 crisis. Pedestrianising streets like Calle Colon also meant that some former Blue Zones no longer existed, the same sources added. Meanwhile, the much-criticised Zona Naranja parking in the La Cala de Villajoyosa beach area that operates each the summer has also been put on hold, Public Safety and Traffic councillor Isabel Perona confirmed.

First fines due for beachgoers FINES for ignoring the Generalitat’s Beach Assistants on Campello’s beaches will soon be arriving at flouters’ homes. The assistants, present on Valencia region beaches to provide health and safety information, are also there to ensure that beachgoers respect anti-Covid regulations. If these are persistently disregarded, the assistants contact the Local Police, who are authorised to issue fines. Most of the fines, which can reach €600, involved groups of young people who ignored social distancing rules, revealed Campello’s Public Safety councillor Rafa Galvañ. Others insisted on tombstoning from the Llop Mari cliffs, he said. “The attitude of some people endangers their own health and that of others, something that cannot be allowed under any circumstances.” Regulations require that family groups maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 metres, Galvañ pointed out. “Anything less is not allowed, and our beaches are big enough to avoid this kind of situation without problems.”

Not long now JIJONA’S solar power plant will soon be linked to the Iberdrola grid. The energy company is currently enlarging its Jijona substation to distribute output from the photovoltaic plant, which is the Valencian Community’s largest. Work on the plant, which is one kilometre away from the substation, is practically finished and the multi-national X-Elio, which has built it, is footing the €272,837 bill for the Iberdrola connection. X-Helio is already planning a second phase at the Jijona plant and once both are in production solar panels of a 114-hectare site will produce enough energy for 19,000 homes and prevent emissions of 42,460 tons of carbon dioxide.

Thumbs down for fish farm THREE different Villajoyosa Town Hall departments oppose plans to extend the existing fish farm. The Environment, Heritage and Urban Development departments argue that upping production by 43 per would impact negatively on the town and its coast. Increased sediment from uneaten feed and fish droppings would affect the protected underwater meadows of Posidonia Oceanica seaweed that are vital for the marine ecosystem, the Environment department maintained. The Heritage department complained that a bigger fish farm would impair visibility at the La Fonda underwater archaeological site and the wreck of the Bou Ferrer Roman galley. Life savers BENISSA’S Local Police saved the life of a 53-yearold Belgian jogger who had a heart attack while exercising near the Cala del Baldrar. Officers called to the scene used their patrol car’s defibrillator and succeeded in recovering his pulse before the arrival of the ambulance that took him to Denia hospital.

The cost been met by the CSIF union, which represents Local Police officers, in collaboration with Benissa Town Hall, Public Safety councillor Ximo Nadal announced. The 25-hour course for the Valencia region’s Local Police officers

provides specific theoretical and practical instruction that enables them to carry out antidrug controls. This has not been possible until now, owing to lack of training and the necessary technical resources, Nadal explained.

Mystery smell in Calpe WHEN all else fails, readers contact the Euro Weekly News for information, as Olive Carstens did recently. Currently staying in the area near the Hotel Esmeralda, Olive was curious to discover the cause of a bad but intermittent smell of sewage. Asking at the Tourist Info office, they suggested that a subterranean watercourse could be the culprit, an original-sounding theory offering little hope of a rapid solution. Olive told us that her landlady who lives in the Olta mountain area said that she has noticed a bad smell there too. “In fact, everybody you ask has noticed it but nobody knows where it is coming from,” she said. “But don’t get me wrong! We absolutely love Calpe and aren’t complaining.” Olive explained to the Euro Weekly News that she and her husband, who arrived by ferry last winter, had expected to leave at the end of March but their return trip was cancelled on three occasions owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. After speaking to Olive, our local reporter rang Calpe Town Hall who were unaware of any problem but promised to advise the Environment department about the mystery smell.

Road temporarily closed for gas LA NUCIA Town Hall announced that Avinguda Esglesia will be closed until early August while natural gas is installed. The entire avenue will be closed to traffic from the Carretera as far as the Plaza Mayor but adjoining roads including Calle Joaquin Beregnuer, Calle Paradis and Calle La Llosa will also be affected during this period. To alleviate the inevitable problems this

will cause, there is a change of direction for Avenida España, enabling access to the Plaza de los Musicos car park and other roads in this part of the municipality, the town hall explained. While Avinguda Esglesia is closed, the Plaza Mayor can be accessed via Avenida España and Carrer La Llosa, so that it will still be possible to reach the town hall and the church by car.

Leapy Lee Triumphs in Readers’ Poll DURING the time of lockdown here in Spain and for a short period after, it seemed that the expatriate community were revelling in the concept of a new normal in which neighbours helped and supported each other and joined each other on balconies to applaud the fantastic work of healthcare professionals. However, slowly but surely, as people have spent more time in isolation behind their keyboards and screens, there appears to be an insidious change. On social media, there seems to be a great deal of rather pointless arguments and sniping when people disagree with one opinion or another. It now seems that it’s not just confined to social media as recent defamatory comments made in other newspapers are a prime example of this trend. This has spurred Euro Weekly News on to take a serious look at what we allow to

appear in print. One important question we were forced to ask ourselves concerned long time columnist Leapy Lee and the opinion on whether he says what our readers think or is a reactionary voice of an outdated past.

Euro Weekly, therefore, decided to give our valued readers their say and created a reader’s poll simply asking whether it was time for Leapy to move on or let him have his say. The results were frankly staggering, with a massive

74 per cent approval rating from readers keeping the faith with our long-time controversial columnist. Leapy is his own man, with very strong opinions about a number of things, and although he has lived in Mallorca for several

years, he has never lost his affection for the United Kingdom and this is why he feels so strongly about the fact that it appears to have changed so much over the last few decades. In his younger days he used to spend a lot of time

in Ladbroke Grove during London’s swinging 60s and was a lover of the new music coming out of such clubs as the infamous Mangrove, he had many West Indian friends and joined in at the very first Notting Hill Carnival, which was a melting pot of London’s many cultures. He also enjoyed an eightyear stint in Saudi Arabia which he looks back on with great pleasure and insists he has no problems with immigration or Islam but absolutely can’t stand what he sees as the lack of gratitude and intent to assimilate once a small percentage of first and second-generation immigrants arrive in the UK. Leapy Lee may be Marmite to many but his weekly observations are not likely to either bring the western world to its knees nor inspire a worldwide revolution. Therefore, thanks to you. our readers, Leapy is here to stay!

Questions and answers A SPECIALIST company is stopping local Javea residents at random on the street and asking them about their transport habits. Their answers will provide a framework for the future Municipal Urban Mobility Plan that will focus on safety measures, sustainability and regulations for the use of electric scooters and other personal mobility vehicles (VMPs), the town hall explained. Interviewers will be requesting details regarding schedules, itineraries and the type of transport used. “The survey has town hall backing,” municipal sources assured the local population.

Whimsical creatures and characters JAVEA PLAYERS’ summer show will be held in the Casa de Cultura from July 27 until August 1. This is a performance of wellloved pieces from iconic Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, but the Players have asked the audience not to sing along with the performers. “That could sound like caterwauling and spoil the rendition by a real cat!” they said. Due to lockdown and the

problem of rehearsing together, Roger Brown’s show is not quite as originally planned. There are fewer singers and no dancing, but the audience are sure to enjoy the trip down memory lane, whether they’ve seen the shows before or not. Pool rescue FIREFIGHTERS assisted a 22-year-old who suffered multiple injuries in the main pool in Callosa’s Fuentes del Algar. The accident occurred late in the afternoon and, according to Emergency Services sources, he was on the point of drowning as a result of his injuries. Once stabilised, he was immediately transferred by ambulance to the Marina Baja hospital in Villajoyosa.

Two outings for Montgo Golf MONTGO GOLF SOCIETY recently played a Stableford competition for the Mojo Cup. This is sponsored by one of the society’s founder members, John Costigan, who now resides in the UK. There was a relatively small field, mainly due to members not being in Spain, and Alan Lowans was the winner with an excellent 40 points. The weather was still extremely hot and humid, but the Oliva Nova course was holding up well. Montgo Golf Society’s FOLLOWING the suspension of worship imposed during the State of Alarm, Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy churches are reopening. Denia will remain closed until September and Javea will be limited to the Wednesday Eucharist until the same time.

Face mask facts if leaving your community ALTHOUGH wearing a protective face mask is not currently obligatory at all times in the Valencian community, we must stress to anybody venturing outside of this area that this is not the case everywhere. For example, anybody travelling to Andalucia, as of Wednesday, July 15, anyone aged six or older must wear a mask

at all times in public spaces, as this is the new law that has been decreed by the President of the Junta de Andalucia, Juanma Moreno. This new policy will ensure that masks be worn at all times when using public spaces, even if the 1.5-metre social distance can be upheld, and even if you are outdoors. In Andalucia,

masks will be mandatory when taking walks on the beach, however, if you are sat with your social group on your beach beds you will not be forced to wear it, as long as you maintain the 1.5metre safety distance. Furthermore, you do not have to wear a mask when swimming. However, whilst walking from the beach to your car, your mask must be on.

AVOID FINES: Residents must remember when travelling, the laws can change.

In restaurants, this rule will be exempt when eating, drinking or smoking and sat at your table with your family or friends, however once leaving the table to go inside or leaving an establishment you will be required to wear it. Whilst driving a private

vehicle a protective mask will be compulsory if you are travelling with anybody who does not reside with you. In Murcia, wearing a mask is only mandatory when you cannot keep an interpersonal distance of more than 1.5 metres.

The Balearics have also made a ruling that it is mandatory to wear masks in all public spaces except the beach and the pool. If you are caught breaking this new regulation you may face fines of up to ₏100.

Conflict carries on at market TRADERS at Javea’s weekly open-air market once again refused to set up their stalls again in protest at new regulations. Those selling clothes, shoes and household items are incensed that although the State of Alarm has been lifted, they may work the market only on alternate Thursdays. The Javea stalls formerly occupied three different sites but in order to comply with anti-virus measures, all are now grouped in the Plaza de la Constitucion, which has one easily-controlled entrance and exit. This means there is less room for the stalls

and the traders are refusing to set up unless they are all allowed to work every Thursday. “We have had no income for four months and coming here once a fortnight isn’t viable,” declared Sebastian Moreno, speaking for the traders. Meanwhile, the town hall has not authorised this year’s Craft Fair which usually occupies part of the Arenal promenade. Again, it was forced to take this step to prevent the spread of Covid-19, but according to Craft Fair sources quoted in the local Spanish media, all involved are in talks to find a solution.

BODEGA TEULADA: Wines are scooping up prizes.

THERE were more prizes for Bodega Teulada at the prestigious Mezquita de Cordoba wine awards. The bodega’s Distinguit vermouth walked away with a gold medal and the Aula del Vino’s special prize for the best vermouth of the year while there was a silver medal for the bodega’s white wine, Vent de Llebeig. Bodega Teulada had already won three awards in international wine events this year, beginning with a gold medal for their Moscatel Selecto at the

Virtus Awards in Lisbon last February. Cloning Fraud Unsure situation

A MASSIVE police investigation has resulted in the arrest of 94 criminals from across Spain who collaborated to steal over € 5 0 0 , 0 0 0 f ro m v i c tims’ bank accounts. The gang were part of a scheme that saw bank details, obtained by cloning mobile phone SIM chips, being used to access customers’ accounts, thereby allowing the transfer of monies out to

the gang’s own illegal accounts, one of the victims had €240,000 withdrawn. Those arrested are accused of defrauding a total of €504,800 from numerous victims from all over Spain. The operation was carried out in a coordinated way in 16 municipalities and ended with the arrest of 94 people; two other people were investigated but not detained. There were two house

searches, as well as the seizure of a large amount of computer equipment. Those arrested all had different roles in the scam, such as counterfeiters, go-fors (muleteers), and fences (launderers). They have been charged with crimes of fraud, money laundering, membership of a criminal group, and, in some cases, falsification of marriage documents.

THERE are currently 17 children of Spanish jihadis stranded in Syria and Spain is unsure of what to do about the situation. Whereas other European countries have adapted their policies to repatriate these minors and avoid their radicalisation, Spain has no clear cut way to deal with them. Families in Madrid have organised themselves to demand the return of the wives and children of these radicalised Spaniards. Countries like France, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Germany have indeed repatriated the children of these jihadis, up to 63 children and two adult women. Once they return to European soil, the adults must face the justice system

whilst the minors fall back into the custody of grandparents or the social services. The Save the Children branch in Spain has called on the countries of origin to safely repatriate these children and their families as this is part of their humanitarian obligations, outlined in the United Nations Convention of the Rights of Children. Keeping them in this environment makes them prone to the discourse of radicalisation and endangers their lives due to the lack of medicine, education and food in the country. Repatriating the children of the caliphate also helps to resolve this conflict and is positively favourable for international security in the future.

purchase, the contract was extended but included a penalty clause which allowed for the seizure of a €700,000 advance payment by way of penalty. As the purchaser did not proceed but instead attempted to sue their client for breach of contract, White Baos Abogados countersued requiring the termination of the contract due to the buyer’s breach and the retention of the advance paid, in accordance with the penalty clause and the case was won in the Denia Court. The other party lodged an appeal and the Alicante Provincial Court indicated that the penalty clause should be modified proportionally, according to article 1154 of the Civil Code (Cc) which states:

“The Judge will equitably modify the penalty when the main obligation has been partially or irregularly fulfilled by the debtor.” This court indicated that it understood that as part of the price was paid, the contract was partially fulfilled, and the penalty should therefore be modified proportionally, and ruled that part of what was paid by the buyers would be returned to them, indicating that the penalty should not be claimed in its entirety. White Baos went to the Supreme Court, contesting this decision and won as the Appeal Court ruled that the Alicante Provincial Court was wrong, due of the following: The penalties agreed in the contracts fulfilled a liqui-

dating function, therefore, they replace the compensation for damages, thus, it is not necessary to prove the damages suffered, since the parties agree them in advance and by mutual agreement (art. 1152.1 Cc). When a penalty or compensation for non-compliance is agreed, if the noncompliance occurs, in the terms agreed then the penalty clause must be imposed without being modified by a judge. Thus, in this case (the loss of the advance payment), it was confirmed that the buyers did not pay the balance of the purchase price. Therefore, in order to modify the penalty, in accordance with article 1154 Cc, the obligation guaran-

teed (payment of the rest of the price) should have been partially fulfilled, which did not happen in this case. It was not relevant that part of the price had previously been paid, since these payments were already taken into account when agreeing the penalty clause. Twin reflections By Damon Mitchell EURO WEEKLY NEWS recently spoke with Barbra Dean, an expat who is now based in Quesada about a book of poetry she has written with her sister whilst spending time in isolation. Barbra and Lydia are identical twins who have always enjoyed being together. However, they now live in different countries, Barbra in Spain and Lydia in Israel. They thought it would be nice in their later years to do something together especially as a legacy for their families. Barbra pointed out that “Over the years we have both kept diaries and also written professionally for various magazines and newspapers. We hit on the idea of a poetry book as we have composed many poems for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and other events,” and added “We write about life as we see it. The people written about all have a special place in our hearts.” Writing ‘Twin Reflections’ has been a rewarding experience for them both and has brought them closer again through the miles of living apart. Barbra went on to explain that “I was Assistant Fashion Editor in SHE magazine arranging photography and fashion shows. “I also freelanced for many newspapers and magazines. Later on, working for a well-known agony aunt, and answered all her mail.”

She has also been a film extra appearing in many soaps for television, a lot of the time in the background of a pub pretending to drink Barbra has also written a book called ‘The Multicoloured Hat’ which has been translated into Spanish called ‘El Sombrero Multicolor,’ and although written for children, it is suitable for adults too who are learning either language. Cops arrested

OFFICERS ARRESTED: The investigation has been ongoing since 2017.

TWO officers of the Guardia Civil have been detained for allegedly rigging contracts of police uniforms. Operation ‘Grapa’, as it was called saw the arrests of five other people, the main two officers indicted in the fraud are Colonel Juan Antonio Maroto and Lieutenant Colonel Alberto Martín Altube. The arrests are the result of an investigation in 2017, when 14 people - most of them officials - were arrested for rigging public contracts both in the General Directorate of the Police and in the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

The investigations focus on the alleged rigging of public contracts in the General Directorate of the Guardia Civil, where a group of officials allegedly colluded with companies that were the beneficiaries of awards of various contracts, including police uniforms. The facts investigated, if proven, could constitute alleged crimes of a criminal organisation, influence peddling, embezzlement, fraud against public administrations, negotiations forbidden to public officials, prevarication, bribery, and money laundering - potentially leading to prison sentences.

Parador Hotels on the up THE state-owned hotel chain, Paradores, is currently experiencing more reservations for July and August than it did last year in 2019, before the health crisis. As of July 9, the chain has sold 3,179 rooms more than they did during the same time period last year. For the month of July, this means 2,711 more rooms than in 2019, and in August there are 468 more reserved stays than last year. The publicly owned company highlights that most of their establishments are located in remote places and that they are medium or small in size, making them “the safest tourist destination to spend vacations. “Sales are working very well because the Spanish people trust Paradores. “We are a very reliable destination and we will be exemplary to ensure the safety of our customers and employees. TIGER mosquitos are flourishing on Spain’s costas, more of the pesky insects buzzing around and biting this spring than for the last five years, according to notifications sent to citizen science app Mosquito Alert. The number of tiger mosquitos registered on the app in the first half of 2020 was 70 per cent up on 2018, up until now the year with the most observations at the beginning of the season. regulations. Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate, councillor responsible for Mobility and Jose Moreno, Operations Chief for Llorente Bus-Avanza, announced that the buses have been inspected by the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification (Aenor) which certified that the buses meet all health and safety requirements. naor certification are the most exacting in Spain and confirm that the bus-line’s installations and services protect both passengers and employees. Trinquet slip road returns SPAIN’S Ministry of Transport confirmed it will provide a €338,000 connection between the N-332 and Benidorm’s Trinquet area. It was “very good news” declared Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez on the day the announcement appeared in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). The Ministry, responsible for the country’s main roads, will create a joining lane that links Assagador de la Barina with the N-332 for traffic travelling in the direction of Valencia. The Ministry decided to eliminate the existing road slip road between the Trinquet stadium and the main road in September 2015, obliging drivers to make a three-kilometre detour, Perez said. The town hall had been fighting ever since to reinstate the connection which would improve mobility for the entire Huerta neighbourhood, the mayor added.

BEACH MEGAPHONE: Messages will reach all parts of the beach. ALBIR beach now has a public address system. The megaphone’s range is long enough to reach all sectors of the sands, explained Alfaz’s Beaches councillor, Luis Morant. The system complements the health and safety measures introduced when the beach reopened and will remind

beachgoers of the need to observe anti-coronavirus regulations. It will also relay messages from lifesavers and warn those who ignore the red flag which flies when swimming is barred. This megaphone will soon be joined by a CCTV system controlled by Alfaz’s Local Police, Morant revealed.

ALFAZ Town Hall and the APPA animal protection society have renewed their collaboration agreement. As well as rescuing strays APPA, founded in 2014, organises the Festival Canino each year, which promotes finding permanent homes for the dogs and cats that live in shelters or with fosterers. APPA also cooperates with neutering local cats and returning them to their colonies.

DENIA’S Museu de la Mar (Maritime Museum) has reopened to the public. Some changes were made during the lockdown period and there are also some interesting new pieces of 18th century naval artillery, donations that have been retrieved from ships that sank off Denia. One of these, a falconet - a light cannon engraved with animals, reptiles, birds or mythical creatures and used by navies, corsairs and pirates alike - was donated by Vicent Luis

Moncho from El Verger. He found the cannon more than 40 years ago when he was fishing for octopus in the Almadrava bay and offered the find to Denia’s Archeological Museum. The director was unable to accept it, owing to lack of storage space but asked Moncho to hold on to the falconet until there was room for it. He waited almost half a century, but his find now takes pride of place in a central showcase in the Museu de la Mar.

Coming along nicely WORK progresses on the new Triana bridge over the mouth of the Gorgos river on Javea’s Grava beach. Operatives removed the temporary props installed to take the weight of the two huge girders that make up the single span, which replaces the original bridge demolished earlier this year. The bridge platform has now been tarmacked and workmen are currently concentrating on connecting the bridge with the Avenida del Mediterraneo and Paseo de la Marina Española.

Breath of fresh air JAVEA Town Hall has received a €19,126 allocation from the regional government for improvements to the municipal Trinquet installation.

This is where the traditional Valencian ballgame, Pelota, is played and watched by audiences who also like to bet on the outcome of

the matches. The Generalitat grant will be used to renew the Trinquet’s air-conditioning system, explained Javea’s Sports councillor Alberto Tur. The worrying outlook is the way that freedom of speech and movement is being handled all around the world which gives the appearance that Covid has given a carte blanche to a totalitarian mandate.

Car Sharing UBER in Spain has entered into an agreement with Catalan based company Social Car to operate a car sharing scheme in seven cities throughout Spain although it will still offer drivers with ‘mini cabs.’ The concept of car sharing which sees owners using a website to allow drivers to rent their cars for a set period of time and even Santander bank has launched its own version, Wabi. I’m trying to make a point

THE British people are frightened. Many I have spoken to feel lost, adrift and vulnerable. At a time when they need the support and strength of their leaders, the older citizens in particular, feel they have been abandoned to a whole new creed of unfamiliar values and customs that appear to take complete precedence over their own. Is this not a terrible indictment of the UK authorities? Those who are supposed to look after the well-being of the citizens they are paid to protect and serve? Today I was talking to a friend, who told me he was recently attending a local hospital where he entered into a conversation with one of the resident doctors. The subject got around to the Covid virus and specifically as to why there were reports that a considerable proportion of ethnic minorities seemed to be more affected than their white counterparts? The doctor told him that in his, and most of his colleagues’ professional opinion, the reasons were that many from ethnic areas hadn’t followed the directions of the authorities. For some time they had simply carried on as normal, and, re the Leicestershire factory incident, basically taken

hardly any notice whatsoever of social distancing. But this is not the point I am endeavouring to make. My friend also told me that when the doctor began relating these opinions, his voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper and he began looking nervously around, in case he was being overheard. Is that not a frightening and completely unacceptable state of affairs? Here is an intelligent professional

man in an important and respected position, actually afraid to be overheard stating what he considered the truth, in case he is branded a racist and possibly puts his job on the line. And have no doubt whatsoever, had he been overheard by anyone who decided they were ‘offended,’ he would almost certainly become the subject of some form of enquiry and could indeed have lost his job.

Someone really needs to take all this soul destroying, opinion muzzling, racist nonsense by the scruff of the neck and shake some common sense into it. It is being used as a weapon. It is successfully eroding the very spirit of the UK and its people. The expression ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a blatant suppression of free speech. It is plainly confrontational and presents no opportunity of recourse or debate whatsoever. By contrast, woe betide those who choose to quite lawfully display the slogan ‘White lives Matter’ or even ‘All Lives Matter’; they have been chastised and dropped on by the law like a ton of bricks, either for racial incitement or at best far right activism. No wonder the indigenous British public is confused and worried. These double standards need to be addressed and rectified; before it is too late. The people I actually do feel sorry for are the genuine immigrants, who are attempting to integrate and truly are an enriching addition to their new, free and generous country. WITH the ‘new normal’ comes a new style of safety-conscious shopping, one which can either make the experience stressful or reassuring. And as a nosy regional reporter for EWN in the Costa Blanca region, I was eager to see how, or even if, stores have adapted to the ‘new now’ and how it has changed what was once an everyday chore which we gave little thought to. Yorkshire Linen has two outlets on the Costa Blanca - one in Albir and another in Javea. The former is the closest to me, and was one of the first stores to reopen after lockdown, so off I went. The first thing I noticed was a sign in the doorway explaining the rules and regulations I, as a shopper, was expected to adhere to. On walking through the doors, there was no avoiding the hand sanitiser, strategically placed so that entry without use would be nearon impossible. Again, plenty of instructions for use and an explanation that mask wearing is mandatory. Here, it’s important to note that I was conducting a ‘secret shopper’ exercise, so as not to influence the way in which I was greeted and treated by the Yorkshire Linen team, Debbie, Clarissa and Sharon. Immediately, the lovely Debbie clocked whether I had scrubbed up and was wearing my mask, before asking how she could help. She too was wearing a mask and kept her distance. Having concocted a story that I was looking for summer bedding and accessories - which wasn’t strictly untrue - Debbie led me to the area where summer linen and throws are kept and asked me all the relevant questions.

All the while she kept her mask in place and maintained a distance. As we were talking a male customer came into the store, wearing a mask, but he obviously hadn’t cleaned his hands as he was inside far too quickly to have taken the time to use the gel provided. Extremely politely but determinedly, Debbie asked if he had used the sanitiser, and when he informed her that he hadn’t, she asked him if he could kindly follow the protocol and he immediately did so. As I browsed, Debbie tended to the gentleman, and as soon he had paid and left, she disinfected the sales area. It then struck me how clean the whole shop was. The time had now come for me to come clean, and Debbie and Clarissa, who had been helping a couple fit out a bedroom, were great about it. They have obviously adapted to many new situations since reopening on May 11 that it now takes

more than a ‘secret shopper’ to phase them. I was keen to know how they felt about coming back to work while Spain was still in the State of Alarm, although perfectly legally and in line with government regulations. “We were one of the first to reopen in this area, so it was quiet initially,” said Debbie, adding: “We were cautious at first because of the pandemic and the fact we had all been in confinement for weeks. “But management ensured all safety measures were in place and our customers respect the rules, so everybody feels at ease. Wearing the masks all of the time makes you extremely warm, but they are for our, and every one of our customers’ protection.” The nature of Yorkshire Linen’s business also makes

clean their hands regularly.” Despite the restrictions and regulations, I have to say that the Yorkshire Linen staff, with their friendly and reassuring service made mine a very happy shopping experience, and I will be going back to pick up the summer bedding Debbie so professionally recommended.

My farton days are over ‘EAT any more of those and you’ll start looking like one,’ said hubby Marcus as he watched me shell a boiled egg. I snapped ‘It’s precisely because I want to stop looking like Humpty Dumpty that I’m scoffing these things!’ This exchange occurred after my decision to radically change my eating habits. I discovered to my horror that I was having trouble buttoning up all of my lightweight summer shirts. A trip to the nearest clothing store confirmed that, during the Covid-19 lockdown, I had gained weight around my midriff and the only shirts that would fit were XL. Normally I’m a medium. I did better than most during the lockdown because I was accustomed to working from

SWEET TREATS: After constantly munching pastries it’s hardly surprising I put on weight during lockdown. home, but the only exercise I was getting was moving from the computer to the fridge which I’d filled with stuff like cheese dips and chocolate items I’d carefully avoided in the past. Worse still, I developed a taste for pastries, especially the Jesús brand. Given that I was eating heavy dinners at around midnight, and

munching chocolate and fartons at around 6am before going back to bed and sleeping until midday, it’s hardly surprising that I began getting truly out of shape. After the lockdown eased, I typed ‘quick ways to lose weight’ into Google. There I found the Indian Boiled Egg Diet which advised me that the two-

week plan requires you to have a maximum of two boiled eggs per day with other nutritious foods. ‘Eggs are loaded with high-quality proteins vitamins A, D, E, B12 … These nutrients help build muscle mass, improve metabolic rate and brain function, protect you from heart disease and macular degeneration, produce hormones, and

strengthen the immune system. ‘When you consume eggs, you consume proteins, which take longer to digest. Hence, you will feel full for a long duration. The proteins also help build lean muscle mass, which, in turn, helps accelerate your metabolism.’ After vowing to try it, with some trepidation I stepped onto my Huawei ‘smart’ scale - it connects to a phone and tracks all changes in weight, body fat and muscle - and found to my surprise that, between August last year and the end of June 2020, I’d only gained three pounds. But these were concentrated around my midriff, hence the difficulty in buttoning up my shirts. Thanks to five days of the egg diet and some vigorous exercise I’ve shed two of those three pounds, and, by the end of the fortnight, with luck, I should be back to being fit, tanned, sexy and slim. Well, even at 73 one can dream, can’t one?

OUR VIEW Got it infamy THE latest Hollywood blockbuster gracing our screens and our papers seems to be ‘The Life Story of Johnny Depp’ or this is what Depp’s libel case against the Sun newspaper appears to be turning into. For those who have missed any of it, Johnny Depp has accused his ex-wife Amber Heard of being a ‘sociopathic’ abuser and denied that he is a ‘wife-beater,’ as was printed in the Sun. Whilst Heard claims that the actor attacked her, has a severe drink and drugs problem, and flew into fits of jealous rage. Videos and photographs have been used in evidence which in some opinions, look completely staged by Heard to show Depp in a poor light and goad him into interaction. On reading excerpts from the court transcript, Depp has already adopted the role of his Captain Jack character foregoing simple ‘no’s’ and ‘yes’s’ during being grilled about what happened on a flight where it is said he kicked a chair which in turn hit her and choosing to answer: “That’s quite a stretch of her imagination.” Or “No ma’am I wouldn’t,” and when asked about verbally abusing her on the same flight, “Not under those circumstances I would not. There are possibilities where that kind of thing might come out of my mouth depending on what came out of her mouth prior, but I did not go into a rage on the flight in front of all these people.” As for Heard’s role, there are witness statements and recordings that include her saying, “You got hit... but I did not punch you. I did not f**king deck you. I f**king was hitting you.” Also in a quote from Depp, “Amber severed my finger with the second of two thrown vodka bottles at me in the early afternoon of Sunday March 8.” Whatever you take from it, these are dangerous allegations and violence is no laughing matter. If you choose to think that a young lady was trying to build her acting career by marrying a huge star, abusing him until divorce which in turn elevated her profile and leave with some of his money. Well, that’s your decision. You might also think that a drunken, drug-taking rich man made himself an easy target and that made him angry enough to break a bottle of wine and get angry. We all deserve our opinion.

Hi Editor, The call from British residents for the government to use our Army would not be needed if the UK police force did their job properly. Here in Spain, we do not need to resort to using the Army, since the Local Police, National Police and Guardia Civil keep law and order to protect law-abiding citizens. In England, the police politely asked someone trying to burn the Union Jack flag on our London Cenotaph “please desist and come down.” Here in Madrid, we all know what the law enforcement officers would say and do, so I much prefer to live here in relative safety. Power of hope Dear Euro Weekly News, My god!!! Is the council crazy? The most important place in the summer, for tourism, is the beach. Both Lampola and Platgetes are in a condition like I have never seen before in my 22 years as a resident. Lampola especially is a total disgrace. Access to the sea is very nearly impossible. Today I have seen numerous people risking serious injury attempting to enter the water, and my wife and I have had to assist several elderly people, trying with a lot of serious difficulties, to enter and come out of the sea. It was July 1, 2017 when two bundles of fur entered our home. Whilst we already had five dogs, we had agreed to foster two puppies until I was able to find them their forever homes.

I named them Rocco and Bentley. Within the next month, Bentley had a new family to live with. It was then, we decided to adopt Rocco. Life was pretty perfect until we received some bad news. When Rocco was 18 months old, we were advised that he had problems with his back legs and after numerous visits to the vets and scans with a specialist, we were advised that the operation was too risky, with an 80 per cent chance of failure. My heart was broken, however, Rocco looked at me with his Mastin smile, full of slobber, as if to say, “Why are you crying, mum? Can we

go home now, I want to play!” We took him home, where he ran around the land with the pack and not a care in the world. He may have not been able to run like a nor mal dog, but he never let that stop him! He didn’t look at it as a disability, he adapted to his strengths and wasn’t going to let anything get in his way. Dogs can teach us humans so much. No matter what they go through, they will always offer unconditional love. They don’t allow self-doubt, procrastination, or other ROCCO: Dogs can teach us humans so much.

Manchester City back in the Champions League competition! THE BLUES: Their twoyear ban is now over. THE Blues have successfully overturned their twoyear ban from European club competitions. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has announced that the club are cleared of ‘disguising equity funds as sponsorship contributions.’ UEFA issued the ban in February after ruling City had committed ‘serious breaches’ of Financial Fair Play regulations between 2012 and 2016. In delivering the ruling on Monday June 13, CAS said City did “fail to coop-

erate with UEFA authorities” but overturned the decision by UEAF’s club financial control body (CFCB) to ban them. A club spokesman said the decision was “validation of the club’s position and the body of evidence that it was able to present. “The club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered,” he said. UEFA said it noted there was “insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold

all of the CFCB’s conclusions in this specific case and that many of the alleged breaches were time-barred.” The governing body added: “Over the last few years, Financial Fair Play has played a significant role in protecting clubs and helping them become financially sustainable and UEFA and the European Club Association remain committed to its principles.” Cas said also that the fine will be cut from €30m (£26.9m) to €10m (£9m approx).

The 29-year-old will keep his England career alive by staying on home soil, after agreeing a deal with Sale that runs until the end of the 2020/2021 campaign.
