Yes, you have to be socially aware, but shops are opening (with some now staying open on Sundays as well), restaurants and bars are greeting guests and, in some parts, they are having to turn away business because of the number who want to just enjoy being out. Music is back, with coun-
cils along the Costa promoting free concerts and in the case of both Marenostrum and Starlite, the organisers have managed to adjust to the fact that international performers simply won’t be able to make it, but there are hundreds of quality Spanish entertainers of all types ready to step in. The sun is shining, the beaches are accessible and if anything, are safer than ever before with properly trained lifeguards and good quality facilities and if you are sensible, there is always a stretch of accessi-

ble beach somewhere which isn’t overcrowded. We have emerged from the worst and the human race is resilient, so with more hotels opening, drivein cinemas and the will to make the best of things, the Costa del Sol is a pretty good place to be.

Remembering a Next issue Very Special Figure by John Smith STEPHEN BROOKSBANK was a special person who was known as a caring and committed Christian who was recognised for his dedication to helping others whenever he could and the fact that he didn’t see obstacles just solutions. He passed away quite suddenly at the end of May and his friends at Age Concern Marbella and San Pedro Alcantara decided to celebrate his life rather than grieve his loss by holding a lunchtime get together at the Alabardero Restaurant in San Pedro. A very large turn out reminisced about their friendship with Stephen and President of the Age Concern Group, Tom Burns gave a short speech about the man who he called one of the three most im-

It was Stephen who literally stopped Tom in the street and after asking if he was British (and accepting that it was actually much better that he was Irish) persuaded and cajoled him into forming the Age Concern Marbella Group. stories about the positive and friendly manner in which he undertook everything in his life and his Pastor also gave a moving speech concerning the man that he knew and led all of those present in a prayer for his soul, but also for those who were his friends and family.

Marenostrum COUNCILLOR for Culture, Rodrigo Romero, has confirmed that Marenostrum Fuengirola Limited Edition starts this weekend with concerts from Antílopez on Saturday, July 11 and the Petit Caviar y Viva la Vida show featuring Omar Montes accompanied by Moncho Chavea and Original Elías, on Sunday July 12. Both performances will take place at the Sohail Castle, which will open its doors at 8.30pm with the performances starting two hours later and tickets are still available at the festival website www.marenostrumfuengiro la.com. All proper hygiene measures will be taken, masks are required and there will be seats along with waiter service for those who want a drink or a bite to eat and the route to regularly disinfected toilets will be marked out. OH NO: The humans are flocking! BATHERS on Santa Ana Beach in Benalmadena were surprised and delighted when they suddenly spotted a very healthylooking Flamingo taking a paddle! It seemed totally unphased by the number of people on the beach and must have been looking for nearby Flamingo Beach, although where it came from is something of a mystery. This is just another ex-
ample of the way that wildlife along the Costa del Sol seemed to lose some of its fear of mankind during the lockdown as there was so little human activity for so long. Wild boar which can be very dangerous, especially if protecting their young, are being seen in more and more urban areas from Benahavis to Fuengirola and the latest report was of a family with three young at Triana

There were sightings of deer on a beach in Estepona, Iberian Ibex on the road from Ronda and even the once threatened Iberian Lynx are multiplying in the wilds of Andalucia. Whilst it is encouraging to see the appearance of wildlife, it must be hoped that they will not become too trusting of humans but remain free and wild.

New dog beach Blue Flags collected
DOG BEACH: Dogs will probably need to be muzzled. The Benalcan dog beach was originally due to open on June 1 but this was postponed because of the need to ensure that it could meet all post pandemic hygiene requirements and reportedly due to objections from a nearby holiday resort. Despite all of this, dog owners can expect positive news in the not too distant future.
THE Spanish political party Partido Animalista (PACMA) which exists to support animal rights and the environment has taken the timely step to remind the country of the situation of the Mijas Donkey Taxis. It observes that the lockdown had mixed blessings for the animals as they were not used to transport tourists around the hilly Mijas Pueblo but at the same time were kept for long periods in what PACMA contend are totally unsuitable conditions where they were crammed into small spaces with little room to move. Last weekend, alerted by the number of complaints received from members of the public, a Guardia Civil vessel was in the vicinity, ensuring that sensible speeds were observed and that bathers and those in smaller vessels were safe.

MORE than 850 people have signed a petition asking that the Benalmadena Council take act i o n t o c re a t e a d o g f r i e n d l y beach for residents and visitors. The organiser of the petition has revealed that following a meeting with the local Delegate for Beaches, she has been told that this matter is certainly due for serious consideration.
FUENGIROLA Council has now received its four Blue Flags which it will be able to proudly fly over the beaches of Los Boliches-Las Gaviotas, Castillo, Fuengirola and Carvajal. With four Blue Flag beaches awarded by the Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), the council can boast that it has some of the top beaches on the Costa del Sol. National Police triumph THERE was a success for the National Police as they tracked down and arrested a British man who had been on the run from the UK authorities since 2016. A European arrest warrant had been issued for the fugitive who was accused of killing a 19-year-old student who was caught in the crossfire of a street shooting between two rival
gangs in Blackburn, Lancashire in May 2016. Working closely with the British police, officers discovered that the man had originally travelled to Portugal and then using his brother’s passport, moved to Huelva and after painstaking research they traced his movements to the Mijas area and officers started routine checks in all local hotels.
Happily, they pinpointed that he was residing in Fuengirola and arrested him outside the building as British police had warned that he may be armed and dangerous. Thanks to the hard work of the National Police, the alleged criminal who is wanted for murder in the UK will shortly be returned to Britain to face charges in court.

New Health Centre Safety measures
FOLLOWING the poster campaign (see EWN 1826) demanding that something be done about the health centre in San Pedro Alcantara, Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz appeared in the town alongside a representative of the Andalucian Health Service to confirm that a decision had been made. Work should start within the next few weeks and is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will be of a standard and size to be expected for a town of San Pedro’s size. The existing health centre which is somewhat run down will be kept as a satellite of the new centre which will be triple the size of the existing building and will allow a larger staff to be able to devote more time to each patient.
MALAGA UNDERGROUND: Passengers using the Metro can purchase masks and hand sanitiser from vending machines located in five stations.
THE city of Malaga’s Metro has installed vending machines selling masks and hand sanitiser in five of its 17 stations. This is intended to facilitate the availability of masks, as their use is now mandatory on public transport. The masks available in the machines are the disposable types
and are sold in packages of five units for €4. The hand sanitiser is a 100ml bottle and costs €2.5. Passengers on the Malaga underground network can now purchase these products at five stations: Palacio de Los Deportes, La Luz-La Paz, El Perchel, Carranque, and Ciudad de la Justicia.
The installation of the vending machines is part of the set of measures implemented by Malaga Metro in recent months to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection, which also include the daily disinfection of trains and facilities, the automatic opening of train doors and efficient signposting to facilitate transit.

Driver flees after accident POLICE in Marbella were called to a major accident in the tunnel under San Pedro Alcantara on the evening of July 5 when a car turned over whilst travelling towards Marbella. The crash did not appear to have been caused by a collision with another vehicle, but no reason has yet been discovered for the accident as the driver and passengers (if any) fled the scene before police and emergency services arrived.

ON Monday July 6 the Spanish Government launched a new residency document for UK nationals who are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement - the Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero or TIE. This means some changes to the appointments process and that anyone registering from now on will be issued with the biometric TIE card, rather than the curre n t g re en p a p e r document. Spain is one of the first EU countries to bring in a new residency system for British nationals and HMA Hugh Elliott welcomed its introduction. He also clarified what it means for UK nationals in a short video saying: “We’ve seen lots of questions and concerns
on social media, so I want to underline two key points. First, I want to assure you that all British nationals, who are legally resident in Spain by the end of this year, will have their rights protected, including the right to live and work here, and lifelong access to healthcare for UK state pensioners, including those who claim a pension in the future. “And second, whether you already have the green residency certificate - A4 or credit card-sized version - or in the future the TIE, they are equally valid in demonstrating your residence status and your rights as a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement. Preparing meals for those in need. THE company responsible for supplying water to residents in Benahavis, is working with the Red Cross to try to raise funds to allow the charity to continue to assist those in difficulty due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Aguas de Benahavis will donate €1 for each new customer who registers in the virtual customer area of its website (www.aguas debenahavis.es) before the end of September 2020. By registering in the
customer area, the users of Aguas de Benahavis may manage and review their contracts, check their water consumption, download bills and generally oversee their accounts with the company. Although this offer will not result in a large donation to the charity, every euro helps as Spain’s Red Cross has assisted more than 2.4 million vulnerable people in the country and mobilised more than 49,000 volunteers at its 1,400 special centres.
BUILDING APPROVED: New project can now go ahead.
THE Marbella Council in the form of San P e d ro d e p u t y m a y o r Javier García and municipal spokesman Félix Romero, has announced that building will take place on an area of land measuring 59,298 square metres which runs parallel to the A7 opposite Linda Vista. With a one-year time span and a significant
financial investment, the builders will need to install a water supply, sewers, electricity, gas connections and telecommunication lines to satisfy the demand from 355 new homes which will be apartments built no higher than four floors. In addition, there will be an area reserved for sporting activities and a further area to
allow for social gatherings as well as green space and a new roundabout to help calm likely traffic which is already busy in that area. The other good news for the town is that there will be almost 500 parking spaces and the recently reprieved 061 service will have its headquarters in the new development.

Wake Up and Smell the Chocolate THE Estepona Council which created the Orquidario Botanical Park has now reported that its Stanhopea trigrina orchid from Mexico has flowered and its main characteristic is the chocolate-like aroma. This is a rare bloom to have in a collection as it is a very demanding plant in terms of care and very sensitive to temperature. It needs cold winters and heat during the summer months, as well as intense light throughout the year. The flower of the Stanhopea trigrina is large and light yellow with flecks of deep maroon. Its flowering lasts a few days and one of its peculiarities is that it gives off an aroma similar to chocolate.

Hit and run POLICE have arrested the hit and run driver who allegedly killed the wellknown cyclist and athlete on Malaga’s motorway. Top cyclist Mario Zumaquero was killed in the early hours of July 5 at around 6.60am on the A-7 motorway, in the direction of Cadiz. Thanks to huge social media response to help find the driver who allegedly fled from the scene after the fatal collision, Local Police were able to track the driver down to a nearby neighbourhood. Torre taxis A ROUND TABLE discussion was held in Torremolinos to discuss the future of taxis and their drivers in the new normal. Present were Mayor José Ortiz García, councillor for Transport, Antonio Ruiz and Chief Inspector of the Local Police, Salvador Serra who discussed a number of matters with local taxi driver’s representatives. Uppermost in their discussions was the need for the drivers to continue to operate safely and in accordance with hygiene regulations to ensure safety of passengers and continued income for the drivers.Also on the agenda was increasing the number of taxi ranks and the need for some form of standard uniform.

Fans had been hopeful for a rescheduled gig and tickets sales sites had kept tight-lipped as to what was going to happen. However, Eventbrite, a US-based ticketing website released a statement from

Cruel conditions THE Guardia Civil in Malaga has carried out an extensive operation to save the lives of hundreds of animals who were neglected and subjected to cruel living conditions. ‘Operation Vulnere’ has been carried out and so far, there are 41 people under investigation and 164 animals have been rescued. Furthermore, more than 200 actions have been carried out in relation to the inspection of private kennels, livestock farms, and zoological spaces. During this time the Nature Protection Service and
Guardia Civil have found 723 administrative infractions related to animal welfare. These include poor sanitary and hygienic conditions, lack of food and water, as well as lack of veterinary assistance. Most of the rescued animals have been dogs, although horses and other exotic species have also been seized. In total 164 animals have been saved and now they have been placed in the capable hands of

SPAIN has a number of rappers who have been highly successful in the country as well as in Latin and South America and local artist, Famel Fernandez will be performing in Estepona on the Paseo Maritimo on August 13. This is a free event under the banner 100 per cent Estepona but as an added bonus, there will be the addition of a contest known in Spain as Batalla de Gallos (Battle of the Roosters) where amateur rappers and MCs aged between 14 and 35 can participate. The winner will receive a €200 prize and the chance to record one of their songs whilst the runner up will be awarded €100 by a jury of those who understand the genre and points will be given for dynamism, wit, vocabulary, spontaneity and lyrics. Anyone who wishes to take part needs to submit a video of a performance via the website at www.estepona.es by August 1, where all rules are also displayed.

Clearance sale at SSD THE Registered Charity SSD (Spanish Stray Dogs) has two charity shops located on the port of Duquesa. During the month of July they are running a mammoth clearance sale. Thanks to the generosity of local people making donations, the shop is a bit overwhelmed. There is a new manager, making sweeping changes, and the idea is to move the stock as quickly as possible to make more space. After necessary overheads, all profit goes to helping stray and abandoned dogs. One shop is filled with clothing and accessories. All the clothes displayed are clean and of good quality. The other shop is filled with hardware, toys and general bric-a-brac. Again, this is of good quality. The shop is open 10am to 2pm Monday to Saturday each week, including Bank Holidays. New autobiography LOCAL restaurateur and long-time Spanish resident, Garry Waite, has just had his second book published. The first, a novel based in Spain, The Warm War was reprinted in 2018, but this tome is an autobiographical look at his life in two halves: Starting from his early years in the UK until his present day on the Costa del Sol. The story of an ordinary chap, from an ordinary background who made some not so ordinary choices in life: As someone who decided to move to Spain in the early 80’s and was determined to stay for the duration, put him in the almost pioneering sphere. A time when there were less than maybe 5,000 expats living in Spain it was a sort of fledgling ‘club.’ It was never easy and when things were great, they were phenomenal, but when they were bad -they were bad! Later years have not treated our protagonist well, so what was the solution? Pack up and go back to a country for which he had no particular longing and to an uncertain life to which he did not any longer belong. After all he had now lived in Spain

WILL THEY VOTE?: Region closed after an outbreak of 100 infected by Covid-19.
Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL ISN’T it strange that the Xunta de Galicia has decided to close t h e re g i o n o f A M a r i ñ a ( L u g o ) d u e t o a n o u t b re a k o f 1 0 0 i n fected by Covid-19, a move that w i l l a ff e c t t h e 8 0 , 0 0 0 p e o p l e who reside in the region, at a time that will overlap the autonomous elections? There are only six days left for the elections in Galicia and the Galicians with the right to vote who have tested positive in A Mariña do not know if they will be able to vote on Sunday, July 12. It will be the Xunta themselves that must clarify this issue, while the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) calls for the suspension of the elections in this area to give every resident a chance to vote. The closure of this region limits the movements of its inhabitants, who are prohibited from entering and leaving the health district except for work and other just cause. Of course, residents are not restricted in their movements and the closure of A Mariña does not imply house confinement. According to the Health Councillor of the Xunta, Jesús Vázquez Almuiña, all those who have a
PCR that confirms that they are infected with coronavirus will not be able to vote. Their close contacts, already numbered 1,200, and who have a negative PCR, will be able to exercise their right to vote. They must come, like any other person, with a mask. Once they vote, they must return to their homes, where they must remain confined for the time estimated by the health authorities. H o w e v e r, a n d i n a c c o rd a n c e with the order of the Official Gazette of Galicia, which regulates the closure of A Mariña, the movement restrictions cannot affect "the exercise of a fundamental right such as suffrage," so it will be allowed to enter and exit of the region to vote. RYANAIR REFUNDS: There have been a huge number of complaints. RYANAIR has stated that it will clear 90 per cent of the backlog by the end of July for people who were unable to travel during lockdown. There have been a huge number of complaints over the company’s failure to pay back customers in a timely
manner, (the company says in its contract agreement that it will attempt to pay back any losses in seven days). All airline passengers have the right to either a refund, to rebook, or to accept a voucher for future travel. Customers had said
International Brigade Memorial WHILST Americans all over the world celebrated Independence Day on July 4, a much smaller group attended the annual remembrance ceremony organised by the International Brigade Memorial Trust in Jubilee Gardens, London. Guest speaker for a much smaller than usual gathering by the International Brigade Memorial was former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn who told the audience that his parents had first met at an event in London held in solidarity with the Spanish Republican cause. The ceremony remembers the more than 2,500 activists from Britain, Ireland and the then colonies who travelled to Spain to fight on behalf of the Republican side against General Franco. During his speech which was recorded, Mr Corbyn referred to the many statues and memorials being taken down and explained that this was one that was most appropriate and showed historical solidarity for those struggling for peace.

Outrage A SPANIARD from Galicia who lived in the UK and paid taxes for almost 40 years has sparked outrage amongst Spanish news outlets after a British hospital in Bolton charged him £600. The Galician expat is called Jose Antionio Mallo, he is 74 years of age and he had worked in the UK for almost four decades. Mallo returned to Galicia around 15 years ago but he frequently visits England as his children still live up north. Nevertheless, an indisposition forced Mallo to be admitted into the hospital in Bolton for a total of 24 hours. A very expensive day at the hospital. Despite receiving British Social Security benefits from his retirement fund after 38 years of working in the UK, Mallo was forced to pay up. He did not have his National Health System Card on him, nor could he remember the number. He did have his European Health Card but that was expired, and his Spanish card was rejected on this occasion, unlike previous times. “How can they pay my pension, but not find me in the system!” exclaimed Mallo. Extended measures
THE government has agreed to extend its ban on cutting off water or light supplies during the health crisis and now this social measure will last until September. More than 200,000 households have reaped the benefits of this measure which was adopted at the beginning of quarantine. Several measures which fall under the ‘social shield’ will be extended until September 30 as these policies aim to protect the most vulnerable families. More specifically, the extended measures include the ban on cutting off electricity, gas and water supplies to Spain’s most vulnerable families, which was adopted in March and will be extended until September 30. According to governmental figures, In the two months following its approval, more than 200,000 homes benefited from this guarantee of supplies. Another extension will be the suspension of payment obligations derived from credit contracts that do not have a mortgage guarantee; this will stay on until September 30 too. Ultimately, the Executive has agreed to extend the timeframe for applications in regard to the moratorium on mortgage debt. It can now be claimed until September 29.

RIGHT ROYAL WELCOME SPAIN’S monarchs, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, recently visited Benidorm as they tour the country’s autonomous regions. They arrived to a rapturous welcome but Felipe and Letizia were not there solely to enjoy enthusiastic applause. They met and listened to hoteliers, tourism professionals and businessmen as well as trade union officials who are fighting to get the resort back on its feet again as it emerges from the Covid-19 crisis. Toni Mayor, president of the Hosbec hoteliers’ association, revealed afterwards that they described the complicated situation to the royal couple, and emphasised that saving tourism must be a priority. China points to Spain ahead of a World Health Organisation ‘scoping mission’ to China, to establish a platform to trace the emergence of Sars-Cov-2. Senior government health adviser Wang Guangfa referenced
research in Barcelona which detected Covid-19 in a wastewater sample from March 2019 to suggest any investigation into its origins should look at Spain. Independent experts
have slammed the research as flawed and contradictory to strong evidence suggesting the virus started in China in late 2019. Director of the UCL Genetics Institute in London Professor Francois Balloux said: “The most plausible explanation is sample mix-up/contamination.”

DISPUTE: Suspect wanted revenge on ‘noisy neighbours.’ POLICE in Madrid have arrested a man who allegedly set fire to his own house to ‘get back at his noisy neighbours,’ one of whom died from ‘complications resulting from inhaling smoke.’ The events took place in Carabanchel in the early hours of Monday morning, June 29. Days before, the detained had been accumulating garbage, cardboard and even wheels inside his home, and around 4am, he set fire to the lot and left the house Minutes later, the intense black smoke and heat from the fire had affected the staircase, the patio and other houses. Firefighters were called and extinguished the flames, while paramedics treated two women for slight smoke inhalation at the scene. A 52-year-old man was taken to the Gomez Ulla Hospital with ‘smoke poisoning and a previous health history.’A middle-aged woman suffered smoke inhalation, which aggravated other health conditions, and she died two days later. National Police have now arrested the suspect and he will undergo a psychological examination.
Hoarding millions

ACCORDING to the Bank of Spain, Spaniards are still hoarding around 267,049 million pesetas, which is equivalent to around €1,605 million. Spain’s beloved pesetas disappeared with the arrival of the common currency in the European
Union, the euro. Although the younger generations don’t have a trace of memory of it, the older generations are finding it hard to part ways with their old currency. The Spanish have had plenty of time to exchange the old currency for the new one. When the euro began to circulate in Spain from January 1, 2002, Spaniards were given the opportunity to exchange their old currency until March 31 of the same year, while both currencies were allowed to co-exist. They were offered the opportunity again the fol-
lowing June 30. In fact, last March 2019, the Spanish exchanged 1,331 million pesetas in banknotes (€8 million) and 332 million pesetas in coins (€2 million). According to the Bank of Spain, more than 18 years after the euro was put into circulation, the Spanish are still hoarding around 135,604 million pesetas in banknotes (€815 million) and 131,445 million pesetas in coins (€790 million). But this is the very last opportunity to exchange the currency. So if you are still hoarding old pesetas you now only have until the end of this year to exchange them for euros.

Scam Hackers THE cybersecurity company, Cybereason, has warned of the latest cybercrime that hackers are using in order to steal your personal and bank details. The malicious code originated from Asia and is capable of stealing information from the victim’s android phone. This virus can access your stored contacts, bank information and application data. The scam starts with a text message in which the attacker impersonates a recognisable and international courier company, such as US Postal, Royal Mail, Deutsche Post or Swiss Post. The SMS is accompanied by a link. If the receiver clicks on the hyperlink, they will be redirected to a page where they will be asked to download the application on its Android version. The problem is that this ‘app’ has been previously developed by cybercriminals with the aim of hiding FakeSpy inside, the malicious spyware. Cybersecurity experts recommend distrusting all emails, SMS and WhatsApp that we receive and are, supposedly, signed by companies.

Monkey labour IT is said that monkeys have been trained to pick coconuts for thousands of years in Thailand, but animal rights group PETA has revealed that this still happens and supermarkets around the world have been selling coconut water and oil from such sources. Many have switched from traditional milk products in order to help prevent cruelty to animals, but those people would be horrified to discover that some monkeys are kidnapped when young, kept in horrific conditions and made to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day according to PETA. According to the group, Boots, Morrisons, Waitrose, Ocado and the Co-op in the UK have either suspended sales or undertaken not to sell any of these products sourced from monkey labour again.

Bank of Spain report by John Smith THE Bank of Spain has published its overview of the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the Spanish econo my and what it expects for the future. It recognises that the figures ex pected of GDP growth in 2020 will not be reached but highlights the fact that even before the lockdown, growth was sluggish. On the plus side however, it does expect to see a decent bounce back in 2021 and believes that the economy is much stronger than it was in 2008
and should therefore be ready to weather the economic storm quicker and with more resilience than previ ously. It sees a need to recognise the im portance of remote working as prior to the State of Alarm less than 10 per cent of the working population worked from external sites but it be lieves that up to 80 per cent of those not on ERTE worked online during the lockdown. This is a potential future strength for the economy especially if more technology savvy youngsters are able

to find work without having to worry about travel expenses. In the report, the Bank recom mends that the government should encourage employers to move away from short term contracts and to do a great deal to support small business es as a high percentage of all employ ers in Spain have five staff or less. Although not mentioned in the re port, it is clear that the government intends to increase taxes for wealthy individuals and companies to try to recover some of the billions spent in the first half of 2020.

I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent. But I think this is wrong. What percentage of the yearly amount should be declared? Then we were told that there is a Horizontal Divide on the property, which has to be legally removed. We now need a minor building licence to do some small repairs using a builder. I find that I cannot do this as I am still not paying IBI and because I cannot obtain an AFO. Could you possibly shed some light on a way forward?

Mortgage holiday might mean problem with new loan.
WHEN the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK announced that those suf fering from financial difficul ties during lockdown could apply for a threemonth mortgage holiday (which has since been extended by a further three months) they inferred that this would not affect individuals credit rat ings. Whilst this is technically true, the reality is somewhat different as a number of British borrowers are now finding out as it appears that if they want to apply for a separate loan, they may well be declined because
banks have the option to check their bank statement and see that the mortgage holidays had been taken. According to the BBC, Vir gin Money has said that it will not let use of the mort gage holiday affect its lend ing decisions but other banks and lenders are prov ing to be less amenable. A spokesman for Halifax (part of Lloyds Bank Group) has advised customers to restart mortgage payments for at least three months be fore applying for a loan, so it looks as if what appeared a lifeline at the time might end up as a mixed blessing.

Back at work AT the height of the Covid19 pandemic in Spain, some 3.4 million workers were subject to ERTE (work furlough) but according to a statement by Social Security Minister Jose Luis Escriva by July 1 the fig ures had almost halved. On that date, the number had reduced to 1.75 million workers and the numbers appeared to be dropping by around 5 per cent each week, helped by the fact that the Spanish government was effectively paying compensa tion to companies to take workers back.

Another possibility, being ex pounded by the think tank Reso lution Foundation is that the Treasury should give adults and children free vouchers to spend in the areas most badly affected by the Covid19 pandemic at a possible cost of £30 billion (€32 billion).

I NOTICE the drug fuelled gangs around the UK’s cities are observing the social distancing laws in their own unique fashion. Not wanting to be arrested for breaking the rules, they are now maintaining their distance by shooting people instead of stabbing them! Three recent murders have been implemented by the gun. Pretty soon we will have an incident where an ‘innocent’ hooded looter (an undoubted pillar of society, who was such a lovely son!) gets shot by the police, when all he was actually brandishing at them was a biro pen. The fact that it was pointed from a distance at the police, who had to react in a split second, will have no bearing on the incident whatsoever and some unfortunate police officer will be hauled over the coals, experience severe trauma and probably lose his job, because he didn’t wait to get shot before defending himself! Out will come the omnipotent victim/ racist card and BLM sympathisers will use the incident to demonstrate their grudges across the land. Others will utilise it as an excuse to riot, loot and pillage.

An utterly disproportionate amount of non-white ‘guests’ will appear on the media, which will include multi-millionaire show biz and sports personalities, all lamenting to a suitably sad and extremely sympathetic presenter, how badly they’ve all been treated. Thousands more naïve individuals will ‘take the knee’ and the UK will have taken another step toward the total disintegration of a culture and society that millions of our
ancestors fought and died to create. Sad innit!? One bright occurrence in all of this has actually emanated from the BBC, who last week, somewhat surprisingly, ordered announcers and their guests not to show support or display BLM badges while on air. Apparently they, and a number of other high profile companies, consider the movement has been hijacked for political reasons after members criticised Israel and supported
defunding the police. Well I’ve got news for the BBC; it’s ALWAYS been a political movement. It simply uses the racist card to drum up support and encourage mayhem. I also have news for its supporters. The movement was originally formed by three black lesbian women, who not only insist on LGPT power, but also want to ban all black heterosexual men from ever attaining a position in the BLM leadership. So put that in your macho knee pad and kneel on it! I also notice that SKY has deemed not to implement this ban. Well, with ilk of Alan Bolton and Kay Burley involved, they wouldn’t would they? Thank you all so much for a positive deluge of birthday wishes. To be quite honest, actually managing to hit 40 took me by surprise; 81 is nothing short of ludicrous! Anyway I had a lovely day, apart from arriving home from my daughter’s party to find the dog had eaten my top of the range, sparkling new birthday present electric shaver. They may be equally surprised by rumours she may publish the ultimate strategic leadership book this summer. Provisional title: ‘MAY I lead you to the (Br)exit - Ten Tips for Purpose-Driven and Collegial Leadership’ (I made this bit up but you get the idea). Probably leadership book of the year, haha! But then some would say, if her predecessors have done this sort of thing, why shouldn’t she? What’s

Strong and stable on the lucrative lecture circuit worse, Blair managing to buy a multi-million pound property soon after leaving office? Clegg getting millions at Facebook? Or a Chancellor who became a newspaper editor (with no journalistic experience) in addition to numerous other jobs? Some leaders (a certain US president comes to mind) seem to think that their occupying the top job is akin to winning some sort of TV talent show, with the ‘winner’ cashing in on leaving. We’ve seen a number of unedifying examples of this, with the result that the integrity of the office is further diminished.
I was never a huge fan of Theresa May as PM, nor during her time as Home Secretary. However everything is relative. If asked, who would you rather be in charge of managing the current pandemic, I don’t doubt there are some who might even choose May over Johnson ... So, all things considered, I

Paying in cash is a nightmare MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man ANYONE tried to pay cash into a bank lately? If so you’ll know that it’s a nightmare. It’s almost impossible to get them to take your money personally. They want you to stand in the street and pay it in a note at a time. At the moment you can’t even get in the bank without queuing in the street to be let in one at a time. Of course, there is still only one teller working. Mrs S tried a few times and has found that every branch and bank has different rules. One won’t let you pay in after 11am. Another branch of the same bank will let you pay in anytime. One will only let you pay via the machine. But there is a way round this if you just want to give your money to the teller and done with. Let’s say you want to pay in €1,200 . They will say put it in machine. But if you pay in €1,201 they have to take the cash off you as the machine will not take coins. Job done. You don’t
have to stand on display outside where everyone knows what you are doing. Ryanair is at it again. My pal had several trips booked and had to cancel them all. He asked Ryanair for his money back. They said it could be done or they would give him vouchers which could be used at any time. He agreed to vouchers. Once they started taking bookings again he booked his son a flight to come over and tried to use one of the vouchers only to be told that he couldn’t because the voucher was not transferable. He tried to point out that he had the option to get his money back but took the option for vouchers at their request. They, of course, sprouted on about terms and conditions. So folks there is a lesson for you. If you get an option of a refund take it because then you can buy a ticket from any airline and not get tied up in gawd knows how many phone calls, emails and online chats trying to sort out a name change which, by the way, was only the first name as the surname is the same! Firstly, you shouldn’t become an MP before the age of 30 so you build up some life experience. Secondly, whilst you are an MP, you shouldn’t have another job, consultancy, directorship or whatever to keep things open and transparent.

CoronaMoaners GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY A S w i t h t h e b e s t i ro n y, I ’ l l b e ironic, moaning, about those who moan. Or, the Corona-Moaners, as I call them. For the last 16 weeks, we’ve witnessed all levels of moaning; from those, who felt being ‘trapped at home’ was too much to handle. Those who felt, being unable to go to their favourite restaurants was a ‘liberty.’ To those, who found wearing a simple face mask, was the ‘end of the world.’ And of course, those who felt their lives may end, when they couldn’t get a b l o w d r y. O h y e s , t h e y ’ v e moaned. No matter how many lost their lives to Covid-19, the CoronaMoaners, just couldn’t help themselves. As the daily death toll, spiralled inter nationally, they kept Facebook busy with their rants. Late night chat forums were filled with bonkers conspiracy theories. If one dared disagree, they moaned. Agree, they found something else to moan about. Block them, they moaned, but luckily, we could no longer hear them. Those who moan, love any excuse to do so. It rains they complain, the sun shines, and it’s too hot. For this select few, the dreaded virus was the icing on the cake of negativity. They’re the same type, who spend every waking minute caught up in yawn-full, and certainly questionable, ‘debates’ in the comment sections. No matter the country, it seems the Corona-Moaners, found serious fault with every politician, medical expert, or person, who didn’t share their dreary outlook. Going as far as blaming prime ministers for the ‘handling’ of the outbreak. Of course, in hindsight, yes certain things, could have been handled differently, in certain countries. However, faced with a ravaging, and raging mystery virus, we, the non-moaners, did what we could,
SPARE ME: But I know my hopes are in vain. and even though, we may not have liked it, we get on with it, with tight lips and a brave face. So now, as we emerge into what we call the ‘new normal,’ life feels almost as before. Surely it’s time for the moaning to stop? One would hope. But of course, those who are finally able to have their hair tended to, now moan that they have to wear a face mask while doing so. Those who longed for pasta alla vongole, can’t stand the fact, that hand sanitiser must be used upon entering restaurants. And finally, to those who’ve whinged, moaned and cried, about the fact they may not be able to have their annual twoweek sojourn to the sun. Now that air travel has returned, albeit with restrictions, to the Corona-Moaners, it’s just not the same. And it’s simply not good enough. I look to the sky, and I plead to be spared from these dreadful people, for all eternity. However, as sure as night becomes day, I know my hopes are in vain. Instead, I continue to smile and be grateful, for all we have. And moreover, for the fact that my loved ones are healthy and safe. Keep smiling, keep going, and stay positive. As for the Corona-Moaners, I say, leave them to it. I for one, have far bigger fish to fry.

BY NICOLE KING THIS week I’ve been to see a possible apartment for our first Malaga orphans who will be turning 18 and finding themselves homeless. We are looking for ‘virtual adoptions’ for the first five children to be otherwise living on the street by the end of July. Can you help? Marbella already is home to many people who join together to make our own little families, so welcoming these orphans here, makes sense. It also makes sense to seize the moment and get our local businesses and charities involved with our own local teens, also often abandoned and left to their own devices, perhaps just for lack of other options? We also have a very active charitable community on the Coast so between us we can not only help these children find their way but also cover the

I order a prawn curry and get chicken. I order my size of shoes on the internet and get a completely different size and colour. The best one was the time that I booked into a hotel room which had no bed in it. Oh yes I did! They had been replacing the furniture and somehow my room was missed. A few years in La Cala De Mijas I woke up to find that overnight, the number of my house had changed from six to number 10. The council had done it during the early hours. This all started when I was a kid. I was given a portable record player for Christmas which exploded quite spectacularly when I plugged it in.

They help newly emancipated boys, girls, adolescents, and their families. Boys and girls in family centres with few resources; supervised boys and girls; families with lack of re-

This commitment with the most disadvantaged children and youth and their families makes them the perfect allies to achieve our ‘self-sufficient circular support system’ with an existing infrastructure that helps us move quickly. Family and community is the best way to ensure a safe environment. For those who don’t have the ideal family, we can embrace them within our community and offer them every opportunity. For those who do have everything they need, this is also a great way to help others around you and have them close enough to feel the benefit. They do say that charity beings at home….

POSITIVE REALITY DEAR Euro Weekly News, Ok, I am ready for these tourists, bring them on. We can handle it. It will just be a little bit of a shock to the system as our streets and beaches have been quiet for so long. Hopefully, all it can bring is good news. As a business owner, my family are struggling. If we cannot bring any money in over the summer we will be out of here come winter. This will be a great shame as the kids are at school here and their friends are here, this is really our home now. Say a prayer Dear Euro Weekly News, Should I be worried? I see mentions in the Spanish papers and whispers of infections growing again, are we on our way into another lockdown? I don’t think I could handle it. Actually, I don’t think Spain could handle it. People would have to just work on through any virus now or there would be

With every ending conversation, email or text punctuated by a STAY SAFE, are we perpetuating our own worries and also projecting them on others whilst creating a constant circle of being scared. Stay indoors, wear a mask, don’t pay in cash, work from home. The demands are growing and we are ensured that if we do what we are told we will have nothing to worry about. Why should it take the threat of a virus to kill rebellion? Why should laws be created on the spot by people who have never had the experience of solving these problems. With our fear and obedience an obsession has grown, the world is magnified, your every thought and action is magnified. If you breathe outside will you die? Does that person in the street have that KILLER virus? We are desperately painting ourselves into a corner with an endless pot of paint, it’s time to crack a window and breathe. So have we been brainwashed, figures don’t lie, do they? The government would never lie, would it? We are now waiting with baited breath (behind a sweaty mask) for our next order from on high. Let’s hope that it is a habit we can break. It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change. We are now living a new lifestyle. Maybe our next order will be to take back our freedom, to think for ourselves... as long as we stay safe whilst doing it.

Masks mayhem Dear Euro Weekly News, I split my time between the coast where I have an apartment and an inland town where I work. In the hilltop town, absolutely everyone is respecting the restrictions, keeping their distance and using a mask pretty much all the time. Since the start of the pandemic, the town registered not one case of infection. I came down to the coast this morning and went for a coffee in San Pedro Alcántara. I was appalled at the number of people who were acting as if nothing had changed. Many, many people (mainly expats and/or tourists) were not wearing masks in a crowded street where it was impossible to keep any sort of safe distance. In the coffee house, people were entering and queuing without masks and were jostling together. The tables were not being cleared between customers never mind cleaned and disinfected. We did not endure three months of strict lockdown to have it all ruined by a casual disregard for others’ health. A complete lack of consideration and respect means there WILL be a second wave and those of us who have abided by the regulations and whose businesses face enormous problems will be the ones to suffer yet again while the uncaring tourists get to fly home. It’s not a death sentence! MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED FIRSTLY, I would like to thank all of the Euro Weekly readers for taking the time to read my column week after week – also for the letters you send in and encouraging comments on Facebook. A big shout out to Michel, Steven and red army at EWN head office for their support and hard work in helping and enabling me to get my story across and help others. I tend to write my columns replacing ‘me’ for ‘we’ - however this week I’m going to write about ME - give an honest insight to Ms Bipolar. These last two weeks I have struggled - yes, really struggled! I have used every bit of my energy and strength to carry on fighting this uphill battle. I have had my doctor on speed dial making tweaks here and there and giving me the professional support I very much needed. But I
have also looked after ME… I have laughed with family and friends, I have sunbathed, I have done silly T ikTok dance routines with my daughter, I have gone to bed early, made my bed every single mor ning and … ‘drum roll… please...’ not had any alcoholic beverages in three weeks!! These little achievements may seem unimportant to most people but to me, they are a reminder that I am still in control and I’m not losing myself to my illness. Just because one day, one week, or more of your life is rough, doesn’t mean things will be that way forever. I know the next couple of weeks will be tough but I also know that I am strong enough to come out of this the other side. I finally understand the gravity of my illness and when I need to ask for help. This disorder can be fatal if not managed properly I’m both a survivor and an advocate. I want to give hope to the millions of people whose lives have been affected by bipolar disorder. I’m living proof that a bipolar disorder diagnosis is not a death sentence. I haven’t just survived, I’ve thrived. And while I’ve had many professional and personal achievements, I’m most proud of my constant recovery. I am unapologetically ME! DIONE LOCKYER AS the alarm filled our bedroom, my heart sank. Another night of no sleep, it was 6.30am, I felt exhausted and the day hadn’t even started. I’d had yet another nightmare about my husband leaving me for another woman, my children were drowning in a pool and I was unable to save them. I would wake up in a pool of sweat, crying hysterically whilst believing it was true. These dreams were a regular occurrence and would create a negative effect on my whole day. Are you a slave to your mind? between my family and me but why was I doing it? I was a slave to my mind! We all have a little voice in our head, the inner critic, the voice of destructive thoughts towards ourselves, our internal enemy that can affect our self-esteem and confidence and my internal critic was VERY LOUD! She convinced me that I was not worthy of success, love, or happiness and convinced me I would always fail. I became depressed and knew I needed to change! In 2018, I decided to study how the mind worked using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques. I learned why we all have the inner critic, where it comes from, and how to quieten the noise. How
ABC MODEL: Strengthen and reinforce your beliefs. thoughts become feelings, feelings become behaviours and, behaviours increase further negative thoughts. Our brain’s primary purpose is to protect us, therefore, when we are faced with a situation where there is any doubt, our brain auto-
matically tells us ‘don’t do that, you will fail’ or, ‘If you do this, you will get hurt.’ When this happens, we tend to listen, feel the fear, and convince ourselves that we are not good enough. How Do We Silence Our Inner Critic? A technique that I
teach my clients is called ‘The ABC Model.’ The ABC model not only helps to reinforce the casual relationship between beliefs and consequences but also shows us that consequences often strengthen and reinforce our beliefs, further maintaining our emotion-
al discomfort. What Is The ABC Model? A = Activating Event (A stressful event that leads to negative emotions) B = Beliefs (Negative thoughts, assumptions, judgements, worries, and demands on yourself or others) C = Consequences (What is the emotional, behavioural, and physical consequence of thinking this way?) If you would like to learn how to use this method in detail, my mindset course, ‘From A Negative Attitude to a Life of Gratitude’ will be released on August 30. EWN chose a selection of dishes from the delicious snack menu, which included heavenly cheesy quesadillas, massive home-made spring rolls and tasty chicken skewers with peanut satay sauce. To wash it all down the frozen Pornstar Martini was the perfect selection from
an exciting list of soothing and refreshing cocktails. Kara must have heard the rumour that EWN has a sweet tooth and nailed it with a brilliant selection that included sticky toffee pudding, chocolate fondant and the favourite... banoffee pie! Kara and her team kept all in attendance thoroughly entertained along with a little help from ‘Ed’ and we heartily joined in for a singalong. Unforgettable flavour THE Harbour Marbella is now officially open and Euro Weekly News had the pleasure of tasting dishes from the fantastic menu they have on offer, not to mention the sampling of refreshing and inventive cocktails. The restaurant owned by Penny and Marc Quinlan sits elevated above the harbour and allows great views of the boats and across the shore of the coast. Upon entering the dining hall is beautifully decorated, airy, fresh with a live lobster tank and a great selection of fresh fish on display. A long wooden bar adorned with brass follows the nautical feel as do the staff’s pristine captain’s uniforms.

The menu is to die for, every bit of thought and attention has been put into both the ingredients of the dishes and their presentation. Upon speaking to Marc you can tell why, he is a real food lover and details the processes of cooking certain dishes, the exact ingredients to
use, textures and flavours. He knows what he is talking about. Upon trying such delights as the huge steamed mussels in a Thai green curry broth and prawn wonton with sautéed cabbage and ginger butter sauce EWN was completely blown away by the
pièce de résistance, the slow-braised beef cheeks with wild mushroom and truffle risotto, full of flavours and such soft melt in your mouth beef. The Harbour is constantly creating and refining their cocktail list and Penny took us through some of their new creations such as
their gin infused with blueberry and basil and the electric blue Octopussy served in a wonder ful octopus-shaped glass. Their set lunch menu is available from 1pm until 6pm, when you can enjoy two courses for €20 or three courses for €25, which includes a drink and in EWN’s opinion after you have

This week Celebrity Chef from Ready Steady Cook & Fellow Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of The Little Geranium in La Cala helps his wife Michele cook on Come Dine with Me.

A COUPLE of years ago Michele was asked if she would go on Channel 4’s Come Dine with Me. As you may know Michele is a ballet dancer a fitness and Pilates instructor, my partner and wife but not really a cook! Channel 4 sold the idea to us as a show that would showcase our little restaurant and that kind of publicity is great for us. For those of you that don’t know Michele … well she can’t cook! To be honest it’s not that she can’t but that she won’t (Can’t cook won’t cook!) and doesn’t need to, be-
ing married to me! So, when she told me that she had been chosen I asked what she would like to cook. She immediately said Lasagna, that’s because her father is Italian and she knows how to make a great lasagna. She asked me what to do as a starter and I thought that Burrata was a good idea. Burrata is a fresh Italian cow milk cheese (occasionally buffalo milk) made from mozzarella and cream. It can also be a mozzarella filled with butter or a mixture of butter and cream. This explains the original meaning of the word burrata literally ‘buttered’ in Italian. So, something very Italian and I gave it a twist by coating the burrata in panko breadcrumbs
COME DINE WITH ME: An interesting mix of people were on the show.
(Japanese dried breadcrumbs) and deep frying them and then serving with marinated Italian tomatoes and basil oil. It really is a delicious dish. For dessert I suggested a type of Tiramisu made from mascarpone cream with fresh cherries keeping the Italian theme, an easy dish to prepare and very tasty.
We tried the dishes out a couple of times at home and even threw a dinner party with Michele cooking the dishes, she seemed to have the winning formula! Michele’s lasagne is excellent especially when it’s made with great quality mince and I had ordered excellent aged Scottish beef mince for
her to use on the show. An interesting mix of people were on the show and it was a really good show, but the Little Geranium was never mentioned on the transmitted show and unless you knew Michele you would not have known who she was! Sadly, Michele came joint second beaten by a
dish made by John Sharples well-known from his great work at Legends in La Cala. I was recently talking with my friend Dave James who runs Global Radio here in Spain and he said that he was on it a few years ago. He is good friends of Beverley Craven who has gone through the trauma of breast cancer. She sang her hit song Promise me on his show. It was so beautiful everyone cried! Dave is another one who can’t cook, won’t cook and I’m always cooking for him and his lady Elena here at The Little Geranium, they are a lovely couple. So, if you are looking for something a little special or different, do try this panko crumbed burrata served with basil oil, the flavours are amazing….

Panko fried Burrata, marinated Italian tomatoes, basil oil Ingredients for four • 2 balls of burrata Mozzarella (cut in half for four) • 6 tablespoons of panko breadcrumbs • 6 tablespoon plain flour • 3 whole eggs beaten • 4 juicy ripe Italian tomatoes with skins removed • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1 heaped tablespoon of sugar or a flat tablespoon of honey • 3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar • 2 tablespoons of chopped fresh basil Maldon salt For the Burrata Whisk the eggs and pour into a clean bowl. Put the flour in a separate bowl and the breadcrumbs in another separate bowl. Line the bowls up in the following order from left to right: flour, egg and breadcrumbs. The key is maintaining one dry hand

and one wet hand. Using your dry hand, place the burrata in the flour and dredge thoroughly; shake off excess. Using the same hand, gently place it in the egg mixture. With your (soon-to-be) wet hand, submerge the burrata fully and ensure that the entire ball is coated. With the same hand shake off the excess and gently place it in the breadcrumbs. With your dry hand, roll the bur-
rata until fully coated in breadcrumbs. Place on a tray lined with paper tissue. When ready to fry, gently lower the burrata in the hot oil (190ºC) and fry in your deep fryer until golden brown, usually one minute. Put on a tray lined with paper tissue and season with Maldon salt whilst still hot. For the tomatoes Score the tomatoes with a sharp knife and place in a pan of boiling water for 10 seconds then immediately remove and chill in iced water. Now remove the skins. Slice the skinless tomatoes into at least three slices each and place in a bowl or tray. Mix the olive oil, vinegar, sugar or honey and salt together and pour over the tomatoes. Add the chopped basil and reserve in the fridge for at least two hours For Basil Oil • Ingredients • 1 large bunch of basil • 1 large bunch parsley • Approx half a bag of washed spinach
• 500ml of Virgin olive oil Bring a saucepan of water to the boil Drop in the basil, parsley and spinach and leave for 10 seconds. Remove with slotted spoon and immediately chill in iced water Leave for 30 seconds in iced water then remove and literally wring out the water Pour the olive oil into your food processor and add the herbs. Whizz on full power for at least three to five minutes until all the green has come out of the herbs into the oil. Pass through a sieve into plastic squirty bottles and reserve To construct dish Remove the tomatoes from marinade onto a clean dry cloth and season with a little Maldon salt Place three slices of tomato into each bowl Place the crispy fried burrata on top of the tomatoes and drizzle with the basil oil. Serve immediately.
