VERA is aiming to woo tourists this summer with the promise of a quality, safe holiday destination. ‘In confidence, Vera,’ is the slogan for the council’s new tourism campaign, which the local authority said is all about showing potential visitors the care which the local tourism sector has taken to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic situation. Commenting at the official presentation of the campaign on Friday, Vera Tourism councillor Catiano Soriana said it had been designed to put out a message of safety “in a friendly way,” showing how all the different tourism sector officers have been involved in a major effort to be in a position to offer quality services in which visitors can trust. The councillor also highlighted the emphasis on being able to enjoy the small things “which we missed so much during lockdown,” like taking a dip in a pool, jumping into the sea or enjoying a cool beer by the shore of the Mediterranean. Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco explained the campaign makes up part of the municipal administration’s Economic Reactivation Plan to deal

Also on Friday, Vera officially received the regional government’s ‘Andalucia Segura’ recognition for the municipal beaches. Junta de Andalucia Tourism delegate in Almeria, Jose Luis Delgado Valdivia, took the opportunity of the campaign unveiling to present the local authority with the distinction. He underlined what he said was the effort made by the council and the municipality’s commitment to putting in place procedures to prevent Covid-19 infection and to give beach-goers confidence that Vera Playa is a safe destination.

ALMERIA Council has set local residents the challenge of coming up with their own ideas on how to reactivate the city’s tourism sector. City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez explained members of the public aged 14 and over have until the end of July to put forward proposals for improving and strengthening tourism in Almeria, with three weekends of ‘experiences’ in the provincial capital up for grabs for the best.
People are allowed one shot only, which must be entered via the website: www.turismodealmeria.org/ almeria-challenge. The entry has to be in a PDF format, no more than 30 pages long, and ideally with a video of up to one-minute to go with it. “We want to listen to every citizen’s idea, that they explain it to us, and which we will study with interest, and if they are viable, incorporate them into our promotion plan,” Sanchez said.
Full steam ahead IT is full steam ahead on plans to convert the old Huercal-Overa station standing on what is now a Green Way walking and cycling route into a leisure and outdoor activity hub, Almeria Provincial Council reports. Works have started on the €380,000 project, for which the Diputacion is providing funding under its Municipal Investment Plans. Huercal-Overa Council has announced it will put out to
tender the management of the main building for its use as a restaurant, cafe and museum, plus it will provide local sports clubs with their own space. “We are talking about the restoration of a historic and monumental building in an idyllic environment in a unique natural zone,” commented Diputacion Development deputy Oscar Lira on a visit to the station on Sunday June 5.

In the nick of time IT was a case of just in the nick of time for a dog which Guardia Civil officers hauled to safety after it fell into an irrigation pool in Vicar. The hapless mutt accidentally slipped into the pool on a farm in the early hours of Wednesday morning. By the time the property owner alerted the Guardia Civil the poor creature was exhausted and on the point of drowning after hours of trying to scramble its way out. The depth of the water and the slipperiness of the pool sides made getting the animal out no easy feat. But with ropes and the help of a wooden pallet the officers finally pulled off the rescue.

Summer school up and running MOJACAR’S summer school is now up and running, but in a version adapted to the Covid-19 situation. The council said Culture councillor Raquel Belmonte and Mayor Rosmari Cano had recognised the need for the classes to start up, albeit it in very reduced format, to support working families, many of whom have had a tough time due to the pandemic and lockdown. The number of available places is just 20 rather than the usual 150 and 200 children; facilities like the swimming pool are out of bounds, and other games and activities subject to restrictive

Guided tours AS part of Almeria Council’s strategy of presenting the city as the ideal holiday destination this summer, the city’s Promotion department has unveiled a programme of 59 guided tours and 45 active tourism experiences over the next three months. Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez explained the 59 tours featured in the ‘Tu verano en Almería’ (Your summer in Almeria) programme for July, August and September will be at different times, during the day and in the evening. They will, he said, cover the history of the
city, and take in all the main places of interest, including the Alcazaba fortification. The active experience side to the programme is a link up with 45 companies putting on activities like golf, escape rooms, horse and camel rides and water sports. Echoing earlier comments made by Almeria mayor Ramon Fernandez-Pacheco, the councillor said the city “receives tourists with open arms.” Sanchez also revealed the council is running a promotional drive up until July 10 to attract visitors to Almeria from other parts of Spain.
THE start of Spain’s summer holiday season has brought a growing interest in Mojacar as an uncrowded destination option, the local tourist offices report. The offices, which reopened to the public on June 20, said the number of phone enquiries about

EXPAT-RUN charity Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone, or FACE, has closed down 17 years after it was founded. FACE member Richard Tolman reported with “great sorrow” that it ceased to exist as a charity from July 1. The charity began as an event to raise money for the MacMillan Nurses in the UK, organised by Adele Wrigglesworth at her home in Arboleas, with the help of friends and neigbours. However it was felt that money raised in Spain, should remain in Spain. And so with considerable help from Arboleas Council, FACE was set up with Adele as the first president. Current president Carrie Ann Earl and vice-president Gilly ElliottBinns, have both been with FACE since its inception, and Richard just over 12 years, making them the charity’s three longest serving members. FACE became well-known for its Christmas markets, but more than anything for the going on for nearly €150,000 it has donated to various charities and organisations over the years. Spanish national charities the AECC (Associacion Espanola Contra de Cancer), and ALCER (for renal diseases), have both benefited from FACE’s fundraising efforts. On a more local basis,

POLICE have arrested a 36-year-old from Retamar for pilfering packages from delivery vans during lockdown. The detention follows a surveillance operation in the area on the back of reports from several messenger and postal service employees about robberies from their vehicles while in the locality. Investigators said DRF watched out
ANOTHER 20 lifeguards have joined the Roquetas de Mar lifeguard service on nine municipal beaches, along with an ambulance service. Last week the 20 new recruits had a training session with the Civil Protection coordinator Antonio Padilla and the Roquetas Tourism and Beaches councillor Francisco Barrionuevo on the

He would then hide the stolen packages under the parked van and go back and pick them up after the courier had driven off. Police said the lockdown restrictions and the lack of
people out on the street allowed the thief to get away with it without being noticed. He managed to get his hands on at least 18 packages. He then tried to sell stolen items on online second-hand sales sites. Thanks to exhaustive online searches police have recovered some of the stolen items, including a topof-the-range smartphone and sports shoes.

THE provincial council has teamed up with online travel portal Logitravel to promote the Costa Almeria as a safe holiday destination to national and international tourists. Diputacion de Almeria Tourism deputy Fernando Gimenez explained the promotion is aimed at both direct users of the portal and at the some 800 travel agencies around Spain for which it provides a service. The ‘traveltool’ will provide agencies with information about the destination so they can sell it to their customers. This will be backed up by mailings and newsletters.
The campaign also includes advertising on the portal’s main page and highest visibility sections, and a dedicated page about Almeria with up-todate information on the products, segments and possibilities which the destination offers. The Tourism deputy described the hook up with Logitravel as “one of the most important promotional actions to continue supporting and strengthening a vital sector for the province.” Logitravel has a presence in nine markets, including Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and the UK.
New date A NEW date has been set for the Age Support Almanzora 20’s-style fundraiser. The 1920’s Casino Night to raise money to go towards helping the registered charity support the elderly in the area will now take place on Friday August 14, starting at 7pm. The venue remains the same as that planned
pre-lockdown for the original night at the end of March, Harley’s Bar in Albox, opposite the bowling alley. The organisers say it will be fully air-conditioned for the event. Claire Stoner is the 1920’s vocalist with music provided by Contraband. The event was a sell-out before it was postponed and the tickets are of course still valid. The charity advises that groups of more than four should reserve a table via Ellen Green of Age Support on Facebook or Harley’s. “We have all been looking forward to this event and hope everyone will be in 1920’s dress and have a great night,” the charity’s Liz Carey commented.

The €400,000 Luis Siret park project got back up and running a few weeks back following a paralysis of the works due to the coronavirus lockdown. Improvements are being carried out throughout the 13,000 square metres of the park. They include placing power cables underground, creating a new pathway around the park, installing new children’s play areas, a 20metre long zip line, picnic and pingpong tables and better lighting.

Rehab gym moves THE Huercal-Overa hospital gymnasium for the non-Covid19 patient rehabilitation service is moving to a municipal building while works are being carried out in the Emergencies B observation area of the La Inmaculada where it is normally housed. Huercal-Overa mayor Domingo Fernandez and the manager of the North Almeria Health Area Jose Miguel Medina have signed an agreement under which the local
authority provides free of charge the use of a 131-squaremetre hall on the ground floor of the Monica Sanchez Social Services building. Fernandez made it clear the council is happy to offer “our collaboration and support” to La Inmaculada on measures aimed at improving the hospital facilities. He said the collaboration between both administrations would benefit local residents. THE design for the new Mojacar lighthouse will be in keeping with traditional local architecture, the Almeria Port Authority (APA) promises. The construction, which will be located on Marina de la Torre’s Moro Manco hill, will
A GUARDIA CIVIL raid on a so-called ‘narco block’ in Roquetas de Mar led to the seizure of some 4,200 marihuana plants and the discovery of an illegal cockfighting set-up. Guardia launched operation ‘Hornoplant’ on the back of information about drug trafficking and the cultivation of marihuana in the building in the resort town. Complaints from local residents about the strong smell of marihuana emanating from the block, along with the constant noise of machines, continuous comings and goings of people and materials, and the regular power cuts in the area, all pointed to dodgy goings on. The Guardia also carried out discreet surveillance and monitoring to gather information on the scale of the illegal activities and who was behind it. In the final phase of the operation officers carried out searches of 17 properties used for marihuana cultivation. Then down in the garage they came across a cockfighting pit. They also found 55 fighting cocks and six dogs of breeds classified as potentially dangerous in four illegally built pens near the building. On top of this, there were 48 unauthorised electricity hook-ups and 44 illegal water connections. A 43-year-old from Berja is under arrest for crimes against public health and defrauding the power and water supplies. He is being held in prison awaiting trial. Seven others are under investigation for animal mistreatment. The Guardia said the investigation remains open and further arrests have not been ruled out.

ON Monday July 6 the Spanish Government launched a new residency document for UK nationals who are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement - the Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero or TIE. This means some changes to the appointments process and that anyone registering from now on will be issued with the biometric TIE card, rather than the current green paper document. Spain is one of the first EU countries to bring in a new residency system for British nationals and HMA Hugh Elliott welcomed its introduction. He also clarified what it means for UK nationals in a short video saying: “ We ’ v e s e e n l o t s o f q u e s t i o n s and concerns on social media, so I want to underline two key points. First, I want to assure you that all British nationals, who are legally resident in Spain by the end of this year, will have their rights protected, including the right to live and

NATIONAL Police reported the case of a break-in at a property in the Las Gonzalas area of Almeria City is now solved. A 30-year-old man is under arrest for stealing a water pump and a paint gun with a combined value of more than €1,000 after evidence gathered at the scene of the crime led to the identification of him as the suspected thief. The break-in took place in the middle of May. The property owner told police someone had got into a garage and storeroom. There were clear signs someone had had a rummage through the inside of a car parked inside, although nothing appeared to have been taken. It also looked as though someone had been poking around at the batteries of a lorry, which was also parked there. Both the pump and the paint gun were missing. The arrested man has an extensive police record.
AN investment of more than €500,000 is giving one of the main entrance roads to Carboneras a complete makeover, the council has promised. Carboneras mayor Jose Luis Amerigo Fernandez and Town Planning councillor Pedro Lopez went along last week to see how works on the Avenida de Garrucha are going. The mayor said the busy road will be utterly transformed into a “much nicer space, also for pedestrians.”
Be a good citizen VERA Council has introduced a new by-law aimed at discouraging irresponsible behaviour and protecting public spaces. The Urban Space Protection regulation is designed above all else to “contribute to improving the quality of life of all Vera residents, being the obligation of all citizens to behave correctly in the use of public property and facilities,” Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco commented at the by-law presentation. The by-law covers a number of matters, among them times and rules for rubbish disposal, cleaning up after dogs when they do their business, regulations on camping and acts of vandalism. Presidency and Interior Regimen
councillor Carolina Perez explained that not abiding by the regulations could result in a fine of up to €1,500 in the most serious cases. She said Local Police have “clear orders to sanction anti-social behaviour which leads to a deterioration of our town.” The council is running a public information campaign with the slogan ‘Vera is counting on you, do your bit,’ to inform residents about the main points of the by-law, which will include a mailing of an infor mation leaflet and a fridge magnet to 15,000 homes. Robbery arrest Complete makeover
TRANSFORMATION: The mayor promised the road will become “a much nicer space.” The project, works on which got going in June, includes a new roundabout, pavement, urban furniture and lighting and the creation of parking spaces.
Carboneras Council is contributing some €172,000 to the project, while the rest is being financed by the Almeria Provincial Council. The works are expect-
ed to be completed within a maximum of eight months.
Jobless increase
ALMERIA registered the second highest monthly jobless increase in June in Andalucia. An additional 5,421 people were out of work by the end of last month, according to figures from the Employment, Migration and Social Security Ministry. Among the eight Andalucia provinces only Huelva saw greater growth in jobless numbers, with an additional 7,920. Almeria’s unemployed total stood at 77,581 by the beginning of July. This represents a 7.51 per cent rise on a month earlier and a very substantial 29 per cent increase on the same time last year. By contrast, the average monthly increase for the whole of Andalucia was just 1.14 per cent, and only 0.13 per cent
nationally. The most affected sector in June was agriculture, with 2,900 more people on the dole than in May. This is largely explained by the agriculture season coming to an end. Services was also hard hit. Another 2,257 were out of a job by the month end, the explanation in this case most probably the restrictions stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. More women in Almeria were affected by unemployment than men. They accounted for 2,847 of the total, compared with 2,574 men. Of the 21,558 contracts registered in the province in June, 92 per cent were temporary and just 8 per cent indefinite.

Stop face mask litter

ROQUETAS DE MAR Council is urging tourists and local residents to take care not to litter the resort town’s streets and beaches with used face masks. The local authority’s Environment department has launched a public awareness-raising campaign to highlight the problem of carelessly discarded masks and to get people to dispose of them correctly, preferably in rubbish containers or at home. The Roquetas administration points out masks dumped in rubbish bins on
the street can easily be picked up by the wind and end up in the sea. The Environment department has turned to pedal power as a suitably sustainable way of getting the point across. Bikes towing information panels with the clear message ‘In the rubbish bin or in the sea’ are going up and down promenades and round other visitor hotspots. The aim is to “reach the maximum number of people and develop respect for the environment,” explained the councillor heading the department, Jose Luis Llamas.
GUARDIA CIVIL have recovered a body from a cave in the isolated San Pedro bay on the Nijar coast. According to reports people living in the bay came across the body of a man in his 60’s on the night of Friday July 3 and alerted the authorities. Due to the difficulty in getting to the cave, the recovery was carried

Hoarding millions
ACCORDING to the Bank of Spain, Spaniards are still hoarding around 267,049 million pesetas, which is equivalent to around €1,605 million. Spain’s beloved pesetas disappeared with the arrival of the common currency in the European Union, the euro. Although the younger generations don’t have a trace of memory of it, the older generations are finding it hard to part ways with their old currency. The Spanish have had plenty of time to exchange the old currency for the new one. When the euro began to circulate in Spain from January 1, 2002, Spaniards were given the opportunity to exchange their old currency until March 31 of the same year, while both currencies were allowed to co-exist. They were offered the opportunity again the following June 30. In fact, last March 2019, the Spanish exchanged 1,331 million pesetas in banknotes (€8 million) and 332 million pesetas in coins (€2 million). According to the Bank of Spain, more than 18 years after the euro was put into circulation, the Spanish are still hoarding around 135,604 million pesetas in banknotes (€815 million) and 131,445 million pesetas in coins (€790 million). But this is the very last opportunity to exchange the currency. So if you are still hoarding old pesetas - you now only have until the end of this year to exchange them for euros.

ISN’T it strange that the Xunta de Galicia has decided to close the region of A Mariña (Lugo) due to an outbreak of 100 infected by Covid-19, a move that will affect the 80,000 people who reside in the region, at a time that will overlap the autonomous elections? There are only six days left for the elections in Galicia and the Galicians with the right to vote who have tested positive in A Mariña do not know if they will be able to vote on Sunday, July 12. It will be the Xunta themselves that must clarify this issue, while the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) calls for the suspension of the elections in this area to give every resident a chance to vote. The closure of this region limits the movements of its inhabitants, who are pro-

right to vote. They must come, like any other person, with a mask. Once they vote, they must return to their homes, where they must remain confined for the time estimated by the health authorities. H o w e v e r, a n d i n a c c o r dance with the order of the
Official Gazette of Galicia, which regulates the closure of A Mariña, the movement restrictions cannot affect "the exercise of a fundamental right such as suffrage," so it will be allowed to enter and exit of the region to vote. The BNG met urgently on Monday, July 6, and asked for the elections in the region to be suspended and the mayor of Burela (Lugo), Alfredo Llano, also proposes to postpone the elections in the region. Llano has been openly critical of the five days of confinement and rightly so. Has this new tool (Covid) not only made the government look stronger by leading us through the crisis, but also given them the strength to direct a situation towards their own benefit?

OWNERS of restaurants, bars, and cafÊs across Spain have been counting the cost of not only closing for so long but also of meeting all of the health and hygiene requirements to allow for reopening. Business in some areas is very good and the ability for Spanish residents to move from one province to another is good news, especially in upmarket areas of the Costa del Sol where second homeowners from Madrid and Sevilla are arriving in their droves. Having said this, however, the fact is that everyone in the hospitality sector has lost money which will never be recovered due to the lockdown, but a May court decision in France might be a lifeline for some. Basically, a French restaurant owner app r o a c h e d h i s i n s u r e r, t h e g i a n t A X A g r o u p for lost revenue caused by the pandemic and closure of his four restaurants, but they refused to pay out saying that the policy he had with them did not cover compensation for lost business due to the health crisis. He was convinced that his policy did allow for him to claim, so he sued them in the French Courts and AXA were instructed to pay him the estimated lost revenue for the two months in which he was closed. Whilst there will be an appeal against the Court’s decision, AXA revealed that in some cases (estimated to be about 10 per cent of

its cover for the hospitality sector in France) the wording of the policy could be considered ambiguous and therefore others may also apply for compensation. Precedence means a great deal in international law and whilst the French decision is not binding in Spain, restaurants, bars, and cafĂŠs would be well advised to check their insurance policies and if there is some possibility of a claim, perhaps take legal advice as well.
NOW that quarantine measures have been relaxed and security protocols have been adjusted to cope with the current health crisis, the Ministry of Health has released a new recommendation - no smoking. Setting aside the adverse consequences that smoking poses on your health, the reason they have recommended against this leisure-
ly activity is that smoking could increase your chances of contracting the coronavirus. The Ministry of Health contends that regularly removing and placing your face mask back on to smoke is an easy way to cross-contaminate without realising. Furthermore, the constant touching of the cigarette and its closeness to your mouth and face can also increase your risk of transmitting the disease. Lastly, exhaling small droplets when smoking can also foment the spread of any diseases. Nevertheless, the Ministry contends that if you are going to smoke, you should ensure you wash your hands before and after doing so.

REMDESIVIR: The Ministry of Health in Spain has assured it has enough stocks to treat seriously ill patients with Covid-19 until next October. THE Ministry of Health of Spain has assured it has enough stocks of Remdesivir to treat seriously ill patients with Covid-19 until next October. By the time the stocks run out, the company that manufactures the drug will already have new doses of the treatment available. This is one of the few medicines that has shown to be effective when fighting against the coronavirus. MarĂa JesĂşs Lamas, the director of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, has confirmed
this reserve of stocks after news hit that the United States (the country worst affected by the pandemic worldwide) had purchased the majority of the remaining Remdesivir stocks. Gilead, the manufacturer of this Covid wonder drug, estimates that there will be more treatments available around October, which is when the new production of the drug is ready. A spokesperson has assured that any patients in Spain who have needed access to the drug have had access to it.

WHILST Americans all over the world celebrated Independence Day on July 4, a much smaller group attended the annual remembrance ceremony organised by the International Brigade Memorial Trust in Jubilee Gardens, London. Guest speaker for a much smaller than usual gathering by the International Brigade Memorial was former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn who told the audience that his parents had first met at an event in London held in solidarity with the Spanish AS pubs in England began once again opening their doors to the public, it was a different scene at the Swan Inn pub in Kent, as a car crashed through the front of the building just hours before it was due to reopen after almost four months of lockdown. The owners, Sue and Ray Perkins, were awoken to a loud bang and discovered that a Land Rover had ploughed into the pub, a grade-II listed building.

Drink Driving Three 17-year-old boys were inside the vehicle and were taken to the local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Kent police stated that one of the boys was being investigated for drink-driving and taking the car without consent. The distraught couple had spent many weeks preparing the pub to reopen to the public but
they remained optimistic and still managed to open to the garden to punters.
Outrage A SPANIARD from Galicia who lived in the UK and paid taxes for almost 40 years has sparked outrage amongst Spanish news outlets after a British hospital in Bolton charged him £600. The Galician expat is called Jose Antionio Mallo, he is 74 years of age and he had worked in the UK for almost four decades. Mallo returned to Galicia around 15 years ago but he frequently visits England as his children still live up north. Nevertheless, an indisposition forced Mallo to be admitted into the hospital in Bolton for a total of 24 hours. A very expensive day at the hospital. Despite receiving British Social Security benefits from his retirement fund after 38 years of working in the UK, Mallo was forced to pay up. He did not have his National Health System Card on him, nor could he remember the number. He did have his European Health Card but that was expired, and his Spanish card was rejected on this occasion, unlike previous times. “How can they pay my pension, but not find me in the system!” exclaimed Mallo.
FINANCE BUSINESS EXTRA Government stake THE UK government is investing €420 million to take a percentage in failed satellite firm OneWeb (which went bankrupt in March) as part of its plan to replace the loss of the EU’s Galileo sat-nav system.
Loan guarantees A NEW law has been approved in Spain which will allow the government to commit €50 billion to guarantee bank loans to approved Spanish companies and to help to resurrect other companies which have already declared themselves bankrupt.
Discount properties BANKIA and Haya Real Estate are offering a mix of 4,400 Spanish commercial and domestic properties for sale with discounts of up to 40 per cent from market price provided the transaction is started by the end of this month.
Monkey labour IT is said that monkeys have been trained to pick coconuts for thousands of years in Thailand, but animal rights group PETA has revealed that this still happens and supermarkets around the world have been selling coconut water and oil from such sources. Many have switched from traditional milk products in order to help prevent cruelty to animals, but those people would be horrified to discover that some monkeys are kidnapped when young, kept in horrific conditions and made to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day according to PETA. According to the group, Boots, Morrisons, Waitrose, Ocado and the Co-op in the UK have either suspended sales or undertaken not to sell any of these products sourced from monkey labour again.

Bank of Spain report by John Smith THE Bank of Spain has published its overview of the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic on the Spanish econo my and what it expects for the future. It recognises that the figures ex pected of GDP growth in 2020 will not be reached but highlights the fact that even before the lockdown, growth was sluggish. On the plus side however, it does expect to see a decent bounce back in 2021 and believes that the economy is much stronger than it was in 2008
and should therefore be ready to weather the economic storm quicker and with more resilience than previ ously. It sees a need to recognise the im portance of remote working as prior to the State of Alarm less than 10 per cent of the working population worked from external sites but it be lieves that up to 80 per cent of those not on ERTE worked online during the lockdown. This is a potential future strength for the economy especially if more technology savvy youngsters are able

to find work without having to worry about travel expenses. In the report, the Bank recom mends that the government should encourage employers to move away from short term contracts and to do a great deal to support small business es as a high percentage of all employ ers in Spain have five staff or less. Although not mentioned in the re port, it is clear that the government intends to increase taxes for wealthy individuals and companies to try to recover some of the billions spent in the first half of 2020.

Then we were told that there is a Horizontal Divide on the property, which has to be legally removed. We now need a minor building licence to do some small repairs using a builder. I find that I cannot do this as I am still not paying IBI and because I cannot obtain an AFO. Could you possibly shed some light on a way forward?

Mortgage holiday might mean problem with new loan.
WHEN the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK announced that those suf fering from financial difficul ties during lockdown could apply for a threemonth mortgage holiday (which has since been extended by a further three months) they inferred that this would not affect individuals credit rat ings. Whilst this is technically true, the reality is somewhat different as a number of British borrowers are now finding out as it appears that if they want to apply for a separate loan, they may well be declined because
banks have the option to check their bank statement and see that the mortgage holidays had been taken. According to the BBC, Vir gin Money has said that it will not let use of the mort gage holiday affect its lend ing decisions but other banks and lenders are prov ing to be less amenable. A spokesman for Halifax (part of Lloyds Bank Group) has advised customers to restart mortgage payments for at least three months be fore applying for a loan, so it looks as if what appeared a lifeline at the time might end up as a mixed blessing.

Back at work AT the height of the Covid19 pandemic in Spain, some 3.4 million workers were subject to ERTE (work furlough) but according to a statement by Social Security Minister Jose Luis Escriva by July 1 the fig ures had almost halved. On that date, the number had reduced to 1.75 million workers and the numbers appeared to be dropping by around 5 per cent each week, helped by the fact that the Spanish government was effectively paying compensa tion to companies to take workers back.

Another possibility, being ex pounded by the think tank Reso lution Foundation is that the Treasury should give adults and children free vouchers to spend in the areas most badly affected by the Covid19 pandemic at a possible cost of £30 billion (€32 billion).

I NOTICE the drug fuelled gangs around the UK’s cities are observing the social distancing laws in their own unique fashion. Not wanting to be arrested for breaking the rules, they are now maintaining their distance by shooting people instead of stabbing them! Three recent murders have been implemented by the gun. Pretty soon we will have an incident where an ‘innocent’ hooded looter (an undoubted pillar of society, who was such a lovely son!) gets shot by the police, when all he was actually brandishing at them was a biro pen. The fact that it was pointed from a distance at the police, who had to react in a split second, will have no bearing on the incident whatsoever and some unfortunate police officer will be hauled over the coals, experience severe trauma and probably lose his job, because he didn’t wait to get shot before defending himself! Out will come the omnipotent victim/ racist card and BLM sympathisers will use the incident to demonstrate their grudges across the land. Others will utilise it as an excuse to riot, loot and pillage.

An utterly disproportionate amount of non-white ‘guests’ will appear on the media, which will include multi-millionaire show biz and sports personalities, all lamenting to a suitably sad and extremely sympathetic presenter, how badly they’ve all been treated. Thousands more naïve individuals will ‘take the knee’ and the UK will have taken another step toward the total disintegration of a culture and society that millions of our
ancestors fought and died to create. Sad innit!? One bright occurrence in all of this has actually emanated from the BBC, who last week, somewhat surprisingly, ordered announcers and their guests not to show support or display BLM badges while on air. Apparently they, and a number of other high profile companies, consider the movement has been hijacked for political reasons after members criticised Israel and supported
defunding the police. Well I’ve got news for the BBC; it’s ALWAYS been a political movement. It simply uses the racist card to drum up support and encourage mayhem. I also have news for its supporters. The movement was originally formed by three black lesbian women, who not only insist on LGPT power, but also want to ban all black heterosexual men from ever attaining a position in the BLM leadership. So put that in your macho knee pad and kneel on it! I also notice that SKY has deemed not to implement this ban. Well, with ilk of Alan Bolton and Kay Burley involved, they wouldn’t would they? Thank you all so much for a positive deluge of birthday wishes. To be quite honest, actually managing to hit 40 took me by surprise; 81 is nothing short of ludicrous! Anyway I had a lovely day, apart from arriving home from my daughter’s party to find the dog had eaten my top of the range, sparkling new birthday present electric shaver. DIONE LOCKYER AS the alarm filled our bedroom, my heart sank. Another night of no sleep, it was 6.30am, I felt exhausted and the day hadn’t even started. I’d had yet another nightmare about my husband leaving me for another woman, my children were drowning in a pool and I was unable to save them. I would wake up in a pool of sweat, crying hysterically whilst believing it was true. These dreams were a regular occurrence and would create a negative effect on my whole day. I would start an argument with my husband, accusing him of things that he hadn’t even done whilst becoming an over-protective mother to my boys. I had created a wedge

Are you a slave to your mind? between my family and me but why was I doing it? I was a slave to my mind! We all have a little voice in our head, the inner critic, the voice of destructive thoughts towards ourselves, our internal enemy that can affect our self-esteem and confidence and my internal critic was VERY LOUD! She convinced me that I was not worthy of success, love, or happiness and convinced me I would always fail. I became depressed and knew I needed to change! In 2018, I decided to study how the mind worked using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques. I learned why we all have the inner critic, where it comes from, and how to quieten the noise. How
ABC MODEL: Strengthen and reinforce your beliefs. thoughts become feelings, feelings become behaviours and, behaviours increase further negative thoughts. Our brain’s primary purpose is to protect us, therefore, when we are faced with a situation where there is any doubt, our brain auto-
matically tells us ‘don’t do that, you will fail’ or, ‘If you do this, you will get hurt.’ When this happens, we tend to listen, feel the fear, and convince ourselves that we are not good enough. How Do We Silence Our Inner Critic? A technique that I
teach my clients is called ‘The ABC Model.’ The ABC model not only helps to reinforce the casual relationship between beliefs and consequences but also shows us that consequences often strengthen and reinforce our beliefs, further maintaining our emotion-
al discomfort. What Is The ABC Model? A = Activating Event (A stressful event that leads to negative emotions) B = Beliefs (Negative thoughts, assumptions, judgements, worries, and demands on yourself or others) C = Consequences (What is the emotional, behavioural, and physical consequence of thinking this way?) CoronaMoaners GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY A S w i t h t h e b e s t i ro n y, I ’ l l b e ironic, moaning, about those who moan. Or, the Corona-Moaners, as I call them. For the last 16 weeks, we’ve witnessed all levels of moaning; from those, who felt being ‘trapped at home’ was too much to handle. Those who felt, being unable to go to their favourite restaurants was a ‘liberty.’ To those, who found wearing a simple face mask, was the ‘end of the world.’ And of course, those who felt their lives may end, when they couldn’t get a b l o w d r y. O h y e s , t h e y ’ v e moaned. No matter how many lost their lives to Covid-19, the CoronaMoaners, just couldn’t help themselves. As the daily death toll, spiralled inter nationally, they kept Facebook busy with their rants. Late night chat forums were filled with bonkers conspiracy theories. If one dared disagree, they moaned. Agree, they found something else to moan about. Block them, they moaned, but luckily, we could no longer hear them. Those who moan, love any excuse to do so. It rains they complain, the sun shines, and it’s too hot. For this select few, the dreaded virus was the icing on the cake of negativity. They’re the same type, who spend every waking minute caught up in yawn-full, and certainly questionable, ‘debates’ in the comment sections. No matter the country, it seems the Corona-Moaners, found serious fault with every politician, medical expert, or person, who didn’t share their dreary outlook. Going as far as blaming prime ministers for the ‘handling’ of the outbreak. Of course, in hindsight, yes certain things, could have been handled differently, in certain countries. However, faced with a ravaging, and raging mystery virus, we, the non-moaners, did what we could,
SPARE ME: But I know my hopes are in vain. and even though, we may not have liked it, we get on with it, with tight lips and a brave face. So now, as we emerge into what we call the ‘new normal,’ life feels almost as before. Surely it’s time for the moaning to stop? One would hope. But of course, those who are finally able to have their hair tended to, now moan that they have to wear a face mask while doing so. Those who longed for pasta alla vongole, can’t stand the fact, that hand sanitiser must be used upon entering restaurants. And finally, to those who’ve whinged, moaned and cried, about the fact they may not be able to have their annual twoweek sojourn to the sun. Now that air travel has returned, albeit with restrictions, to the Corona-Moaners, it’s just not the same. And it’s simply not good enough. I look to the sky, and I plead to be spared from these dreadful people, for all eternity. However, as sure as night becomes day, I know my hopes are in vain. Instead, I continue to smile and be grateful, for all we have. And moreover, for the fact that my loved ones are healthy and safe. Keep smiling, keep going, and stay positive. As for the Corona-Moaners, I say, leave them to it. I for one, have far bigger fish to fry.

I don’t think I could handle it. Actually, I don’t think Spain could handle it. People would have to just work on through any virus now or there would be

With every ending conversation, email or text punctuated by a STAY SAFE, are we perpetuating our own worries and also projecting them on others whilst creating a constant circle of being scared. Stay indoors, wear a mask, don’t pay in cash, work from home. The demands are growing and we are ensured that if we do what we are told we will have nothing to worry about. Why should it take the threat of a virus to kill rebellion? Why should laws be created on the spot by people who have never had the experience of solving these problems. With our fear and obedience an obsession has grown, the world is magnified, your every thought and action is magnified. If you breathe outside will you die? Does that person in the street have that KILLER virus? We are desperately painting ourselves into a corner with an endless pot of paint, it’s time to crack a window and breathe. So have we been brainwashed, figures don’t lie, do they? The government would never lie, would it? We are now waiting with baited breath (behind a sweaty mask) for our next order from on high. Let’s hope that it is a habit we can break. It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change. We are now living a new lifestyle. Maybe our next order will be to take back our freedom, to think for ourselves... as long as we stay safe whilst doing it.

Masks mayhem Dear Euro Weekly News, I split my time between the coast where I have an apartment and an inland town where I work. In the hilltop town, absolutely everyone is respecting the restrictions, keeping their distance and using a mask pretty much all the time. Since the start of the pandemic, the town registered not one case of infection. I came down to the coast this morning and went for a coffee in San Pedro Alcántara. I was appalled at the number of people who were acting as if nothing had changed. Many, many people (mainly expats and/or tourists) were not wearing masks in a crowded street where it was impossible to keep any sort of safe distance. In the coffee house, people were entering and queuing without masks and were jostling together. The tables were not being cleared between customers never mind cleaned and disinfected. We did not endure three months of strict lockdown to have it all ruined by a casual disregard for others’ health. A complete lack of consideration and respect means there WILL be a second wave and those of us who have abided by the regulations and whose businesses face enormous problems will be the ones to suffer yet again while the uncaring tourists get to fly home. MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED FIRSTLY, I would like to thank all of the Euro Weekly readers for taking the time to read my column week after week – also for the letters you send in and encouraging comments on Facebook. A big shout out to Michel, Steven and red army at EWN head office for their support and hard work in helping and enabling me to get my story across and help others. I tend to write my columns replacing ‘me’ for ‘we’ - however this week I’m going to write about ME - give an honest insight to Ms Bipolar. These last two weeks I have struggled - yes, really struggled! I have used every bit of my energy and strength to carry on fighting this uphill battle. I have had my doctor on speed dial making tweaks here and there and giving me the professional support I very much needed. But I have also looked after ME… I have laughed w i t h family a n d
friends, I have sunbathed, I have done silly T ikTok dance routines with my daughter, I have gone to bed early, made my bed every single morning and … ‘drum roll… please...’ not had any alcoholic beverages in three weeks!! These little achievements may seem unimportant to most people but to me, they are a reminder that I am still in control and I’m not losing myself to my illness. Just because one day, one week, or more of your life is rough, doesn’t mean things will be that way forever. I know the next couple of weeks will be tough but I also know that I am strong enough to come out of this the other side. I finally understand the gravity of my illness and when I need to ask for help. This disorder can be fatal if not managed properly I’m both a survivor and an advocate. I want to give hope to the millions of people whose lives have been affected by bipolar disorder. I’m living proof that a bipolar disorder diagnosis is not a death sentence. I haven’t just survived, I’ve thrived. And while I’ve had many professional and personal achievements, I’m most proud of my constant recovery. I am unapologetically ME! The wife considered sending for a shrink, but: ‘He don’t eat much, just chicken-feed. And all that peckin’ in the ground don’t hurt nothin’. Heaven knows, we can use the eggs.’ As we ease out of Covid-19 lockdowns I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on how folk are dealing with situations no-one imagined they would ever have to contend with before the pandemic - and it’s been a fascinating exercise, especially with regard to the wearing of face

I liked what I saw, but not so much that I’d spend big bucks on one. On an online American medical supplies store I saw Swarovski masks being sold for $80. But you can pay way more than that. New York City streetwear giant, Supreme, is reportedly flogging some of the most sought-after face masks on the planet. Supreme originally began selling neoprene creations for just over $120, but demand has seen its designs fetching more than $500 on resale
sites. Casting my eyes around the empty streets of Benidorm, sadly depleted of holidaymakers, I noticed numerous stores - Chinese ones in particular - displaying eyecatching arrays of colour ful masks. But I take no comfort from the fact because, no matter how fabulous one’s mask may look, I feel suffocated when I’m in environments where they are mandatory and I begin suffering panic attacks. So, bus rides and visits to food outlets have kept to a minimum. And then there’s the issue of choosing the WRONG mask. In my case one featuring cannabis leaves. I dispensed with it immediately after I was approached on three occasions on a single after noon by separate groups of youngsters asking whether I had any dope to sell.

LA LIGA, the organising body of the top two divisions of Spanish club football, has claimed another win against piracy of its content, joining forces with the Danish Rights Alliance to secure a ruling against the Rojadirecta platform. Denmark’s high court has ruled that Rojadirecta is illegal and must be blocked by Danish ISPs. The Spanish company that administers Rojadirecta, Puerto 80 Projects, appealed an initial ruling claiming that its platform is not illegal as it also legally provides certain content. However, the high court sided with the Danish Rights Alliance and La Liga in their argument that a service dedicated to illegal activities is illegal, regardless of the presence of legal content. Previously, Rojadirecta gained 19,000 Danish visitors in one month, allowing consumers to access live sport such as La Liga matches. Director of the Danish Rights Alliance, Maria Fredenslund, said “This means that there is now access to block services that offer illegal TV and live sports. This is a hugely important development, especially for broadcasters who at great expense pays for exclusive rights to sports content.”
