‘HEROES of the pandemic’ have been honoured in Elche with the presentation of a commemorative plaque to resident Cecilio Velasco, who beat the killer bug after a two month battle. Local journalist and writer, Monica Carrillo, has also been awarded the 2020 Honourable Mention for ‘personifying a key group during the epidemic in her work as an informer.’ The honour and award presentation was organised by Vinalopó Hospital in its 10th Defenders of Health Tribute event. The ceremony marked ‘the gratitude of an entire society towards its health personnel, who have fought in the front line against the coronavirus despite the risks.’ Councillor for Health, Mariola Galiana, the MD of the Department of Health of Vinalopó, Rafael Carrasco, and director of Primary Attention of the Department of Health of the General Hospital, Carlos de Gregorio, attended the event, along with health staff and patients. “Thank you to the health personnel for being there, taking care of us and watching over each one of us,” said Galiana, referring to the “battle against an invisible enemy” waged by assistants, nurses and doctors. Galiana remembered “all those who have suffered, both those who have overcome it and those who have not and their families.”

Hailed hero HERO HAILED: Samba saved an elderly woman’s life. SAMBA COULIBALY is a 44-year-old immigrant who arrived in Spain from Mali around 17 years ago, now he is being hailed a hero by friends and colleagues after he saved a woman’s life. Samba was able to rescue a 70-year-old woman who was flailing from the third floor of a building in Santiago El Mayor in Murcia. According to Samba, who works in a fruit and vegetable warehouse, he was walking past the apartment blocks when he heard people shouting for help, without thinking twice Samba climbed up to her apartment as he knew that the firefighters would not get there on time and that she was going to fall.

Thankfully Samba was walking past in the right place at the right time because on looking neighbours argued that the lady’s husband could not hold her up in place for much longer. With Samba’s help, the husband was able to bring his wife, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, back to safety. She allegedly tried to leave her home through the window when she found the door was closed. Samba says he acted on instinct and that he had never climbed to those heights before, the adrenaline was pumping and thankfully he was able to save the woman’s life. He has now been hailed a hero.

those who teach English, music, art, religion, and even those who serve children with special educational needs will not be able to access different classes, nor will schoolchildren be able to leave it. So that the tutors will be in charge of assuming training in multiple subjects. Also, specialist teachers ‘can give classes to each group through the use of technologies that the centre has or acquires (for example, use of a digital whiteboard, projector or videoconference).’

Ambulance aid LOS ALCAZARES Town Hall has decided to assume the expense of an ambulance to provide service to the area, estimated at a cost of more than €145,000, after the suspension of the agreement with the Murcian Health Service (SMS) by the regional government. This was announced at a press conference, last week, by the mayor of Los Alcazares, Mario Cervera, who pointed out that the subsidy for this item has been withdrawn because the new contractor of the SMS ambulance service is not required by contract to locate a vehicle in Los Alcazares, which increases waiting times from five to 15 minutes. The socialist mayor asserted that “a life is worth much more than €145,000 and, despite all the inconveniences we have, I will not allow any resident to be in danger and not have guaranteed minimum health services.” Cervera confessed that in recent months he has held meetings and conversations with the Minister of Health and the manager of SMS, requesting that “a historic demand, such as the launch of a 24-hour SUAP in Los Alcazares, become a reality.”

Beach patrols ELCHE has beefed up beach patrols as thousands flock to its nine kilometres of coastline. Throughout June, beachgoers have been enjoying Elche’s beautiful beaches, but with the summer season officially launched on July 1, a contingency plan is only now being implemented with 35 daily lifeguards and nine ‘controllers’ in place until mid-September. Elche Council has

awarded the €330,000 contract of safeguarding its beaches to Unar Group which offered five more lifeguards, half an hour more service daily, four extra days, possibly the last weekends of September, and five more control chairs for Elche beaches. The coastline service, which also includes two rescue boats and the provision of two ambulances, started on July 1.

Deep cleaning ASPE Town Hall has completed an extensive disinfection programme in schools and educational facilities across the town. Measures to combat the spread of coronavirus have been carried out in schools, institutes, Peñas Blancas Nursery School and Youth House. Similar treatments have been carried out in municipal facilities since mid-March, but a ‘special disinfection’ process has been extended to all schools, youth centres and educational facilities. ON Monday July 6 the Spanish Government launched a new residency document for UK nationals who are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement - the Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero or TIE. This means some changes to the appointments process and that anyone registering from now on will be issued with the biometric TIE card, rather than the current green paper document. Spain is one of the first EU countries to bring in a new residency system for British nationals and HMA Hugh Elliott welcomed its introduction. He also clarified what it means for UK nationals in a short video saying: “ We ’ v e s e e n l o t s o f q u e s t i o n s and concerns on social media, so I want to underline two key points. First, I want to assure you that all British nationals, who are legally resident in Spain by the end of this year, will have their rights protected, including the right to live and

A STUDY prepared by the Ministry of Health, together with the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), the National Statistics Institute (INE), and the autonomous communities, has concluded that 1.6 per cent of the Murcia population has suffered from Covid-19, a percentage lower than the 5.2 per cent of the national average. The objective of the work, which began on April 27 and has been carried out in three waves, has been to estimate the prevalence of infection of the new coronavirus in Spain by determining antibodies against the virus by

Fire starters THREE youths have been arrested in connection with a forest fire in Murcia’s El Menjú de Cieza. They are accused of deliberately starting a fire in mid-June which destroyed 2,000 sqm of forest and 400 sqm of agricultural land. The blaze occurred in a forest plot in El Menjú, a recreational area on the right bank of the river Segura which is frequently used by walkers as the path links Abarán and Cieza. After burning pine, brush and other native species, the flames spread into agricultural land and several helicopters and fire units were mobilised. Officers from the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) and the Environmental Crimes Investigation Brigade (BRIDA) of the CARM, carried out an ‘exhaustive ocular inspection’ in the areas where both fires started, and established they had been set intentionally. Witnesses reported seeing several young people away from the scene and after police investigations, three minors have been charged with the crimes of arson and fire damage.

ASPE POOL: Reopening with restrictions. ASPE is reopening its pool and gym with restrictions and by appointment only. The Sports Department of Aspe Town Hall is opening the Tomás Martínez Urios swimming pool and gymnasium on Monday, July 6, with 33 per cent capacity. Users will have to comply with established hygiene protocols, such as temperature checks, mask wearing,

ELCHE’S Covid-19 crisis food bank has closed having collected almost 80,000 kilos of food for the vulnerable during the pandemic. The campaign has come to an end with the final presentation of 4,000 kilos of supplies by Elche’s Festive Association of Moros and Christians. Representatives from the ‘kilo fiesta’ scheme met with councillor for Festivals, Mariola Galiana and councillor for Social Rights, Mariano Valera to thank all those who have supported the project to alleviate the social emergency caused by the pandemic. The 4,000 kilos of food was added to the 75,000 kilos given to the food bank set up by the Elche Council and DYA.

BRUSSELS has released its latest economic forecasts for EU member states, and the situation is looking dire for Spain. According to these forecasts, the Spanish GDBP is expected to fall by 10.9 per cent and by 2022 it will only partially recover with a growth of 7.1 per cent. The unprecedented impact of the crisis and the suspension of activity during the first half of the year has ultimately brought these figures down for Spain, especially so as the country is heavily reliant on the services sector. This new 10.9 per cent drop is 1.5 points lower than what Brussels had calculated in May. The

THE Algerian immigrant who fled from the Covid cluster he created after arriving at Cartagena has been found hiding in Andalucia. The 25-year-old fled from the government enforced quarantining by tying his sheets together and escaping through the hospital window. The youngster was found in Escombreras, only four kilometres away from the hospital he was first forced to quarantine in. Last Sunday July 5, a whopping 108 Algerian immigrants arrived to the Murcian coasts, eight of them arriving with the coronavirus. After they tested positive for the virus, they were forced to undergo a A WOMAN and her five-year-old son were found dead in a hostel in Madrid, according to the investigations, the mother had killed herself after suffocating the child. The mother and child had only been staying at the hostel for two days and had not caused any problems. It was the owner of the Levante Hostel

However, the hospitals do not have police outside monitoring the quarantine which is how the young migrant managed to escape by tying his sheets together and jumping out of the window of a fourth floor.

several houses. The German businesswoman created the company Siam Partner SA, which received a loan from Juan Carlos I ‘to buy two houses in Villars,’ according to her state-

ments, which also include a house in London valued at €5.6 million, with another €4 million spent on refurbishments. Larsen stated that the King had given her £1.5 million towards the purchase of the house, but that this was a ‘donation’ in her favour. She also assured the courts that the donation for almost €65 million she received from Juan Carlos in 2012 was out of ‘gratitude and love,’ something her lawyer had already stated last March, distancing herself from the possible interpretation of money laundering. In fact, last March 2019, the Spanish exchanged 1,331 million pesetas in banknotes (€8 million) and 332 million pesetas in coins (€2 million). According to the Bank

of Spain, more than 18 years after the euro was put into circulation, the Spanish are still hoarding around 135,604 million pesetas in banknotes (€815 million) and 131,445 million pesetas in coins (€790 million). But this is the very last opportunity to exchange the currency. So if you are still hoarding old pesetas you now only have until the end of this year to exchange them for euros.

THE Guardia Civil has arrested 14 Spanish and Moroccan agricultural business owners in Granada, for offences against the rights of migrant workers, where five people have also been charged with encouraging illegal immigration and another four with renting out property unfit for living. The arrest, known as Operation Llano, took place in the municipalities of Zafarraya and Alhama de Granada, where the Guardia Civil reported 38 infractions including illegal immigration for-profit and violation of the right to decent housing. Most agricultural workers in Spain

are migrants, often in irregular situations, who are taken advantage of by employers, as they profit by being able to pay less per hour for workers without legal contracts or registration with the Social Security, and housed in sub-standard accommodation. The Guardia Civil found that many of the migrants were working up to 10 hours straight, with no right to weekly rest, and were paid between €5 and €6 an hour. Many were also housed in tool sheds, without insulation, enduring very high temperatures, with no electricity, drinking water, or toilets.

Three Radical Jihadis arrested THE police in Badalona, Catalonia, arrested three radical jihadis as part of an operation against terrorism. The three detainees, whose nationality has not been revealed, resided in the same block of flats in the La Salut neighbourhood, on Calle Calderón de la Barca. According to police sources, the three dedi-

cated their time to recruiting and radicalising other Muslims. Police decided to arrest them after observing that they were ‘quite radicalised’ and posed as an imminent risk to society. Officers searched their house, where they seized various materials, including documentation and a computer.

Memory Law THE gover nment is preparing to finalise a legally irrevocable ‘Memory’ Law that will come into force at the end of the year that will include the withdrawal of posthumous awards and decorations. The new Historical Memory Law, which is still open to contributions until July 11, aims to become a legally irrevocable text against which it will be difficult to appeal and will be taken to a Council of Ministers to be approved and enforced before the end of the year. The first vice-president of the government and minister of Democratic Memory, Carmen Calvo, wants to take the law further than the bill approved by Zapatero in

Enforced confinement THE public health authority in the Balearic Islands ordered the enforced solitary confinement of a traveller from Barcelona with Covid-19. The individual decided to visit the island of Ibiza, despite being diagnosed with coronavirus by PCR just a few days before travel, confirmed the health authority. Once the authorities were notified of the situation, the individual was transferred to a local hospital for enforced confinement. The decision to enforce quarantine was a unanimous one made by the local judge, health authorities, the National Police and Guardia Civil.

Divorces Outweigh Weddings LAWYERS in Spain are afraid that 2020 marks the first year in which the number of divorces outweighs the number of weddings. Weddings are already on the downfall as 2019 marked the lowest number for unions since 2014. According to the National Statistics Institute, last year only 165,578 marriages were officiated. Fake condoms THE Mossos d’Esquadra in Barcelona have reported the administrators of two wholesale drug companies for the distribution of fake condoms and have sent out a warning to residents who may have purchased them to not use. These products are counterfeit and their sale may constitute a crime against the public health as well as a crime against industrial property. The investigation began in the middle of May when the Department of Health and Pharmaceutical Control alerted the Mossos that a supermarket in Barcelona could be selling fake condoms. The supermarket, located in Travessera de Les Corts in Barcelona, was reported for selling fake condoms under the Durex brand. More specifically, the questionable batch of products has product information in Spanish and Portuguese, the expiry date is marked 2024-05, and the batch number is 1000221414. This product has been distributed since the end of 2018 and it is estimated that more than 15,000 boxes have been sold. The Mossos have penalised the administrators of these two distribution companies.

THE Ministry of Health of Spain has assured it has enough stocks of Remdesivir to treat seriously ill patients with Covid-19 until next October.

By the time the stocks run out, the company that manufactures the drug will already have new doses of the treatment available. This is one of the few medicines that

has shown to be effective when fighting against the coronavirus. María Jesús Lamas, the director of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, has confirmed this reserve of stocks after news hit that the United States (the country worst affected by the pandemic worldwide) had purchased the majority of the remaining Remdesivir stocks. Gilead, the manufacturer of this Covid wonder drug, estimates that there will be more treatments available around Oct o b e r, w h i c h i s w h e n the new production of the drug is ready. A spokesperson has assured that any patients in Spain who have needed access to the drug have had access to it.

THE National Police surprised a young man on July 2 whilst he was strangling his girlfriend in a flat in the district of Carabanchel in Madrid. The man was caught red-handed with a dominating stance over the woman and he has now been arrested for it. The incident took place at 1.15am in the morning on Jaibru Street in the Vista Alegre neighbourhood. The National Police branch received a call reporting a violent discussion in the house. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found a 27-year-old Honduran man with his hands around his partner’s neck, who

is 28 years of age. The aggressor was detained in the room and there was blood around the victim which was from a blow she received to the nose, which they think has possibly been fractured. She also suffered from various bruises from previous abuse and the victim was quickly transported to the Emergency Room of a hospital in Madrid. The aggressive detainee has a history of abuse and even a record of attempted homicide in the realm of gendered violence. He now has a report against him for sexual violence and also has a restraining order against the victim.

China points to Spain CHINESE officials have insisted that any investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic should not be confined just to China and point to Spain as an alternative source bringing back memories of the Spanish flu. The statements came ahead of a World Health Organisation ‘scoping mission’ to China, to establish a platform to trace the emergence of Sars-Cov-2. Senior government health adviser Wang Guangfa referenced research in Barcelona which detected Covid-19 in a wastewater sample from March 2019 to suggest any investigation into its origins should look at Spain. Independent experts have slammed the research as flawed and contradictory to strong evidence suggesting the virus started in China in late 2019. Director of the UCL Genetics Institute in London Professor Francois Balloux said: “The most plausible explanation is sample mixup/contamination.”

DISPUTE: Suspect wanted revenge on ‘noisy neighbours.’ POLICE in Madrid have arrested a man who allegedly set fire to his own house to ‘get back at his noisy neighbours,’ one of whom died from ‘complications resulting from inhaling smoke.’ The events took place in Carabanchel in the early hours of Monday morning, June 29. Days before, the detained had been accumulating garbage, card-

board and even wheels inside his home, and around 4am, he set fire to the lot and left the house Minutes later, the intense black smoke and heat from the fire had affected the staircase, the patio and other houses. Firefighters were called and extinguished the flames, while paramedics treated two women for slight smoke inhalation at the scene.

A 52-year-old man was taken to the Gomez Ulla Hospital with ‘smoke poisoning and a previous health history.’ A middle-aged woman suffered smoke inhalation, which aggravated other health conditions, and she died two days later. National Police have now arrested the suspect and he will undergo a psychological examination.

Scam Hackers THE cybersecurity company, Cybereason, has warned of the latest cybercrime that hackers are using in order to steal your personal and bank details. The malicious code originated from Asia and is capable of stealing information from the victim’s android phone. This virus can access your stored contacts, bank information and application data. The scam starts with a text message in which the attacker impersonates a recognisable and international courier company, such as US Postal, Royal Mail, Deutsche Post or Swiss Post. The SMS is accompanied by a link. If the receiver clicks on the hyperlink, they will be redirected to a page where they will be asked to download the application on its Android version. The problem is that this ‘app’ has been previously developed by cybercriminals with the aim of hiding FakeSpy inside, the malicious spyware. Cybersecurity experts recommend distrusting all emails, SMS and WhatsApp that we receive and are, supposedly, signed by companies.

Coronavirus study THE Carlos III Institute of Health has today published the final report of the seroprevalence study in Spain. Besides the conclusion that only 5.2 per cent of the population has suffered from coronavirus, the study also revealed that 14 per cent lost their antibodies within just a few weeks. In the study, over 68,000 people underwent serological testing, otherwise known as antibody tests, which determine whether someone has had the virus by the level of antibodies present in their blood. The research was conducted in three rounds: the first ran from April 27 to May 11, the second from May 18 to June 1, and the third from June 6 to June 22. Around 14.4 per cent of the people who had antibodies in Round 1 had already lost them in Round 3. The percentage of people

Monkey labour IT is said that monkeys have been trained to pick coconuts for thousands of years in Thailand, but animal rights group PETA has revealed that this still happens and supermarkets around the world have been selling coconut water and oil from such sources. Many have switched from traditional milk products in order to help prevent cruelty to animals, but those people would be horrified to discover that some monkeys are kidnapped when young, kept in horrific conditions and made to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day according to PETA. According to the group, Boots, Morrisons, Waitrose, Ocado and the Co-op in the UK have either suspended sales or undertaken not to sell any of these products sourced from monkey labour again.

Bank of Spain report by John Smith THE Bank of Spain has published its overview of the effects of the Covid­ 19 pandemic on the Spanish econo­ my and what it expects for the future. It recognises that the figures ex­ pected of GDP growth in 2020 will not be reached but highlights the fact that even before the lockdown, growth was sluggish. On the plus side however, it does expect to see a decent bounce back in 2021 and believes that the economy is much stronger than it was in 2008

Mortgage holiday might mean problem with new loan.

WHEN the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK announced that those suf­ fering from financial difficul­ ties during lockdown could apply for a three­month mortgage holiday (which has since been extended by a further three months) they inferred that this would not affect individuals credit rat­ ings. Whilst this is technically true, the reality is somewhat different as a number of British borrowers are now finding out as it appears that if they want to apply for a separate loan, they may well be declined because

banks have the option to check their bank statement and see that the mortgage holidays had been taken. According to the BBC, Vir­ gin Money has said that it will not let use of the mort­ gage holiday affect its lend­ ing decisions but other banks and lenders are prov­ ing to be less amenable. A spokesman for Halifax (part of Lloyds Bank Group) has advised customers to restart mortgage payments for at least three months be­ fore applying for a loan, so it looks as if what appeared a lifeline at the time might end up as a mixed blessing.

Can’t have everything...

I NOTICE the drug fuelled gangs around the UK’s cities are observing the social distancing laws in their own unique fashion. Not wanting to be arrested for breaking the rules, they are now maintaining their distance by shooting people instead of stabbing them! Three recent murders have been implemented by the gun. Pretty soon we will have an incident where an ‘innocent’ hooded looter (an undoubted pillar of society, who was such a lovely son!) gets shot by the police, when all he was actually brandishing at them was a biro pen. The fact that it was pointed from a distance at the police, who had to react in a split second, will have no bearing on the incident whatsoever and some unfortunate police officer will be hauled over the coals, experience severe trauma and probably lose his job, because he didn’t wait to get shot before defending himself! Out will come the omnipotent victim/ racist card and BLM sympathisers will use the incident to demonstrate their grudges across the land. Others will utilise it as an excuse to riot, loot and pillage.

An utterly disproportionate amount of non-white ‘guests’ will appear on the media, which will include multi-millionaire show biz and sports personalities, all lamenting to a suitably sad and extremely sympathetic presenter, how badly they’ve all been treated. Thousands more naïve individuals will ‘take the knee’ and the UK will have taken another step toward the total disintegration of a culture and society that millions of our

ancestors fought and died to create. Sad innit!? One bright occurrence in all of this has actually emanated from the BBC, who last week, somewhat surprisingly, ordered announcers and their guests not to show support or display BLM badges while on air. Apparently they, and a number of other high profile companies, consider the movement has been hijacked for political reasons after members criticised Israel and supported

defunding the police. Well I’ve got news for the BBC; it’s ALWAYS been a political movement. It simply uses the racist card to drum up support and encourage mayhem. I also have news for its supporters. The movement was originally formed by three black lesbian women, who not only insist on LGPT power, but also want to ban all black heterosexual men from ever attaining a position in the BLM leadership. So put that in your macho knee pad and kneel on it! I also notice that SKY has deemed not to implement this ban. Well, with ilk of Alan Bolton and Kay Burley involved, they wouldn’t would they? Thank you all so much for a positive deluge of birthday wishes. To be quite honest, actually managing to hit 40 took me by surprise; 81 is nothing short of ludicrous! Anyway I had a lovely day, apart from arriving home from my daughter’s party to find the dog had eaten my top of the range, sparkling new birthday present electric shaver. It will just be a little bit of a shock to the system as our streets and beaches have been quiet for so long. Hopefully, all it can bring is good news. As a business owner, my family are struggling. I don’t think I could handle it. Actually, I don’t think Spain could handle it. People would have to just work on through any virus now or there would be

With every ending conversation, email or text punctuated by a STAY SAFE, are we perpetuating our own worries and also projecting them on others whilst creating a constant circle of being scared. Stay indoors, wear a mask, don’t pay in cash, work from home. The demands are growing and we are ensured that if we do what we are told we will have nothing to worry about. Why should it take the threat of a virus to kill rebellion? Why should laws be created on the spot by people who have never had the experience of solving these problems. With our fear and obedience an obsession has grown, the world is magnified, your every thought and action is magnified. If you breathe outside will you die? Does that person in the street have that KILLER virus? We are desperately painting ourselves into a corner with an endless pot of paint, it’s time to crack a window and breathe. So have we been brainwashed, figures don’t lie, do they? The government would never lie, would it? We are now waiting with baited breath (behind a sweaty mask) for our next order from on high. Let’s hope that it is a habit we can break. It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change. We are now living a new lifestyle. Maybe our next order will be to take back our freedom, to think for ourselves... as long as we stay safe whilst doing it.

Masks mayhem Dear Euro Weekly News, I split my time between the coast where I have an apartment and an inland town where I work. In the hilltop town, absolutely everyone is respecting the restrictions, keeping their distance and using a mask pretty much all the time. Since the start of the pandemic, the town registered not one case of infection. I came down to the coast this morning and went for a coffee in San Pedro Alcántara. I was appalled at the number of people who were acting as if nothing had changed. Many, many people (mainly expats and/or tourists) were not wearing masks in a crowded street where it was impossible to keep any sort of safe distance. In the coffee house, people were entering and queuing without masks and were jostling together. The tables were not being cleared between customers never mind cleaned and disinfected. We did not endure three months of strict lockdown to have it all ruined by a casual disregard for others’ health. A complete lack of consideration and respect means there WILL be a second wave and those of us who have abided by the regulations and whose businesses face enormous problems will be the ones to suffer yet again while the uncaring tourists get to fly home. DIONE LOCKYER AS the alarm filled our bedroom, my heart sank. Another night of no sleep, it was 6.30am, I felt exhausted and the day hadn’t even started. She convinced me that I was not worthy of success, love, or happiness and convinced me I would always fail. I became depressed and knew I needed to change! In 2018, I decided to study how the mind worked using Cognitive

ABC MODEL: Strengthen and reinforce your beliefs. Behavioural Therapy techniques. I learned why we all have the inner critic, where it comes from, and how to quieten the noise. How thoughts become feelings, feelings

become behaviours and, behaviours increase further negative thoughts. Our brain’s primary purpose is to protect us, therefore, when we are faced with a situation

where there is any doubt, our brain automatically tells us ‘don’t do that, you will fail’ or, ‘If you do this, you will get hurt.’ When this happens, we tend to listen, feel the fear, and convince ourselves that we are not good enough. How Do We Silence Our Inner Critic? A technique that I teach my clients is called ‘The ABC Model.’ The ABC model not only helps to reinforce the casual relationship between beliefs and consequences but also shows us that consequences often strengthen and reinforce our beliefs, further maintaining our emotional discomfort. What Is The ABC Model?

A = Activating Event (A stressful event that leads to negative emotions) B = Beliefs (Negative thoughts, assumptions, judgements, worries, and demands on yourself or others) C = Consequences (What is the emotional, behavioural, and physical consequence of thinking this way?)
