Late March and all of April were rainier than usual and had been preceded by torrential Isolated High Altitude Depressions (DANAs) followed by Storm Alicante which hit the coast in late January. Added to this, consumption plummeted during much of the Covid-19 State of Alarm when bars, restaurants, hotels, tourist apartments and second residences were closed and empty. In consequence, levels at the reservoirs that serve the Marina Baja, part

of inland El Comtat and the Gandia area of La Safor are high enough to guarantee water not only during the summer but the remainder of this year and, if rainfall follows its normal pattern, 2021 as well. According to the Confederacion Hidrografica del Jucar (CHJ), responsible for the northern Costa Blanca’s reservoirs and waterways, Beniarres is at 94 per cent capacity with 25.6 cubic hectometres, Villajoyosa’s Amadorio dam is 80 per cent full with 12.6 cubic hectometres and Guadalest on 79 per cent has reserves of 10.2 cubic hectometres.

THE Generalitat allocated €11.224 million for improvements to all 13 of Line 9’s Tram stations and halts, plus five on Line 1. Line 9 covers the Benidorm-Denia route while Line 1 links Luceros in Alicante City with Benidorm. The cash will enable regional rail operator FGV to modify platforms to allow easy access to the new electro-diesel trains but the project includes dismantling the now unused Disco Benidorm halt and replacing the track-bed and rails in Benidorm. Flexible approach to beach use BENIDORM Town Hall increased the number of beach entrances. Following a meeting with Poniente seafront business-owners, Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez agreed to add two more on the Avenida Española beach road. The Levante beach has another access at the end of Avenida Ametlla del Mar in the Rincon de Loix. “As we explained on first presenting the Benidorm Beach Safety plan, this can be adjusted depending on demand and use at any one time,” Beaches councillor Monica Gomez explained. “Last week we increased the beach entrances from 20 to 30 and now we have added another three.” Gomez also revealed plans to extend the blue beach areas used by families and the general public although these already outnumber the green areas reserved for the over-60s. “Bearing in mind the people visiting the beaches during these first weeks and the type of tourist we expect this month, we believed it advisable to increase these blue plots,” Gomez said. The councillor also made it clear that the elderly were not confined to the green areas, but could use the blue zones if they preferred.

Hope for almonds MIREIA MOLLA, regional government’s Agriculture chief, visited Altea to discuss the Xylella Fastidiosa plague. Forty Alicante province mayors attended the meeting as Molla detailed the principal changes in EU directives to combat the plague that has attacked local almond trees, resulting in orders to uproot and destroy tens of thousands of them. Molla explained that instead of eliminating everything within a 100-metre radius of an infected tree, this has been amended to 50 metres. Brussels was also considering finding some use for the wood from removed healthy trees, she added. The Agriculture department head also revealed Generalitat plans to help growers return to economically-viable activity with alternative crops. “We have been able to demonstrate to the EU that our olive trees are not an affected species and these could be one of the options for replanting areas where almonds have been eliminated,” Molla announced. The new Brussels directives come into effect in August and should help to alleviate the existing situation, she said.

Neatly sectioned zones CAMPELLO’S Playa Carrerlamar and Playa Muchavista are divided each day into zones for beachgoers. In the early hours of the morning, tractors separate each beach into three different areas, the first of which is reserved for those wishing to walk at the water’s edge or access the sea for swimming. The second is composed of various fourmetre strips for beachgoers where children - always accompanied by an adult - can also play. The third zone is reserved for chiringuito beach bars, sports and leisure activities, explained Campello’s Beaches councillor Julio Oca. He also made a call for beachgoers to follow the instructions of all authorised personnel and revealed that his department would soon be announcing its formula for controlling beach-capacity on Campello’s many coves.

Ladies who lunched TWENTY ladies of Calpe U3A’S JUGS (Just Us Girls) met recently for lunch at a restaurant on La Fossa beach. There was a big thank-you for Anita Sanchez, the new JUGS group leader, for organising a very successful lunch. They are taking a break for the summer, so the next lunch will be held at another local restaurant on Thursday, September 3.

LA CALA: Three beach entrances with controls at each.

FINESTRAT Town Hall has opened a third entrance to the La Cala beach. “This means we have now covered the beach’s three areas, with access in the centre and at each end,” said David Alarcon, Finestrat Town Hall’s Beaches councillor.

“Coinciding with the tourists’ arrival we can avoid overcrowding and continue to comply with the Covid-19 health and safety measures.” Alarcon also revealed that beachgoers may now take airbeds and other inflatable beach items.

Second outing ROYAL watchers and spotters noticed that during her recent visit to Benidorm, Queen Letizia wore a dress by Adolfo Dominguez, which has been seen before. The previous occasion was a photocall with King Felipe and their daughters Leonor and Sofia in Mallorca’s Marivent Palace in August 2019.

Summer health centres open THE auxiliary summer health centres in Javea, Calpe and Benissa are now open and continue until September 6. The auxiliary centres in La Fosa (Calpe) and El Arenal (Javea) are open from 10am until 6pm on weekdays and from 12 noon to 3pm on Saturdays. The La Fustera auxiliary centre in Benissa opens from 12 noon to 3pm from Monday to Saturday. Elderly and independent THE inland city of Alcoy has more than 3,600 residents who are over 65 and live alone. Roughly half are more than 80 and city hall contacted them during lockdown’s Phase Zero to find out how they were coping and to detect cases of need. The outcome of the phone calls was “entirely positive,” city hall said. Eighty per cent of the elderly assured interviewers that they were well. Thirteen per cent said their situation was “fair” while 3.20 per cent described it as “bad.” Only 11 per cent required further contact and 63 per cent of those calls were follow-ups. The remainder offered information regarding social benefits, help with shopping, doctor’s prescriptions, rubbish collection or psychological attention.

Up and running JALON VALLEY HELP’S totally refurbished shop is now open in Alcalali. The refurbishment was a major project and will provide a muchimproved shopping environment which should help to bring muchneeded additional income enabling the charity to continue all its good work in assisting the most vulnerable in the local community. Elaine Horton, JVH president, thanked Ron for all his work on the project and the builder Miguel Moldovan for his significant contribution. There were also thanks for the volunteers who helped with painting, cleaning and getting the

shop ready to open. “They should all be proud of what they have achieved,” Elaine said. The JVH shop in Orba also opened and business was brisk, although all safety precautions were in place to ensure a safe shopping experience. Unfortunately, opening the charity’s Jalon shop was delayed due to urgent repairs although it will reopen in the very near future. In the meantime, the charity’s van will be near the shop every Friday morning between 10am and 1pm for donations of clean, good quality clothes, household articles, books and other items.

ON Monday July 6 the Spanish Government launched a new residency document for UK nationals who are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement - the Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero or TIE. This means some changes to the appointments process and that anyone registering from now on will be issued with the biometric TIE card, rather than the current green paper document. Spain is one of the first EU countries to bring in a new residency system for British nationals and HMA Hugh Elliott welcomed its introduction. He also clarified what it means for UK nationals in a short video saying: “ We ’ v e s e e n l o t s o f q u e s t i o n s and concerns on social media, so I want to underline two key points. First, I want to assure you that all British nationals, who are legally resident in Spain by the end of this year, will have their rights protected, including the right to live and

A fine situation BETWEEN March 15 and the lifting of the State of Alarm on June 20, Denia’s Local Police issued 1,346 fines for infringing lockdown. According to their own figures, the municipality’s National Police force started proceedings against flouters on 886 occasions between March 15 and May 7. Of 23 arrests, 13 were related to gender violence, the police revealed. During the State of Alarm’s 97 days, 6,876 people were identified and officers stopped 22,144 vehicles on the town’s streets during the period when journeys to other municipalities were vetoed except for work or emergency purposes. Fines continue to be issued, but on a more modest scale, Denia’s Local Police revealed, and centre on not wearing a face mask in enclosed public spaces or where social distancing is not possible.

at the last plenary council meeting but the town’s socialist mayor Enrique Moll stressed that the PSOE voted against it purely on practical grounds. The name-change would have affected at least 12 local business, requiring unwelcome expense during the current crisis, Moll said.

A BUSY Gandia shopping area’s residents are opposing plans to install a mosque in a local building. The Comunidad Islamica la Comunicacion association has asked Gandia’s city hall if the ground floor of a property it hopes to acquire is suitable for conversion into a mosque. According to the local Spanish media, two residents claiming to speak for the majority of their neighbours, declared in a written statement that they do not oppose the centre, “let alone the people who wish to use the building for religious purposes.” Their objections were based on the already busy

Blue Door fever AS the tourist season hots up, it gets harder to find a spot on Javea’s Granadella and Portitxol beaches. Last weekend both were closed to cars by 8.30am and two hours later had reached their respective capacities of 200 and 150 beachgoers. Many of those turned away by the Local Police and Proteccion Civil volunteers had driven from Valencia capital only to be informed that Granadella and Portitxol were full although there

was plenty of space on the Arenal and Muntanyar beaches. Many of those who were disappointed were particularly anxious to take photographs in front of the blue door belonging to a fisherman’s famous cottage on Portitxol beach. This is always popular for envy-provoking selfies on Instagram but visitors preferring to remain in hopes that some beachgoers would leave seen were discouraged and warned that they were in for a long wait.

New look for seafront ALTEA recently signed an agreement with the Environment Ministry to begin the second phase of plans to remodel the seafront. These include transforming the promenade, creating a beach with ‘enviable’ accessibility and moving cars from the heart of the Altea to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, said Urban Development councillor Jose Orozco. “Urban quality, sustainability and mobility” would be watchwords for what Orozco termed the town’s most ambitious project for decades. The next Montgo Golf Society outing was a Stableford competition for the Founder’s Day Trophy. This was sponsored by Russ Peters who could not be present as he is not in Spain, along with many Montgo members, owing to Covid-19. Despite extreme temperatures and humidity there were some particularly good scores, as the winner Geoff Willcock had 40 points. There was only one two, on the 16th by Geoff. It was also good to see Neil Cuming who joined the players for the presentation. He has been receiving chemotherapy in recent months but looked very well.

Beach poison investigation A WATCH is being kept on Campello’s ‘dogs-allowed’ beach at the mouth of the River Seco. The town hall’s Public Safety councillor Rafa Galvañ explained that his department has mounted a special operation to “investigate, detect and fine antisocial behaviour towards pets.” This follows protests on the social media as well as an official complaint from a local woman whose dog died at the end of June. It had eaten “something toxic or poisonous” on the beach, she told police. To verify these claims, the Local Police and the Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit Seprona, are keeping the beach under close surveillance, Galvañ said.

It’s a gas! THE Balearia shipping line’s Bahama Mama, was recently the first ferry to take on liquid natural gas (LNG) in Denia. Two LNG tanker lorries simultaneously refuelled the ship, which was also a first for any installation belonging to the Valencian Community ports authority. The Bahama Mama began operations at the end of June, following re-motoring that was carried out at the Gibdock shipyard in Gibraltar, where the ferry was converted to dual gas-diesel engines. The ferry possesses two gas storage tanks that provide the ship with enough power to cover 750 sea

miles (1,389 kilometres). At present, the Bahama Mama operates between Denia-Ibiza-Palma de Mallorca four times a week although starting tomorrow, July 3, the ferry will be sailing each day, supporting Balearia’s two fast-ferry links to the Islands. The Bahama Mama is Balearia’s fifth gas-powered ship and will shortly be joined by the Sicilia, which is currently being refitted in Portugal. By 2021, Balearia will have spent a total of €380 million on a total of nine re-motored and newly built gaspowered ships, the company revealed.

Science does the trick DNA analysis solved the theft of a litter of Americ a n S t a ff o rd s h i re t e r r i ers in inland Banyeres. Five puppies, each worth up to €600, were taken from their mother last December when they were only three weeks old. The Guardia Civil’s IBIbased ROCA rural crime unit who took over the investigation suspected that with Christmas approaching they could have been sold as presents. They provided Alicante Province’s College of Veterinary Surgeons with photos and details of the stolen litter, asking vets to contact the authorities if they treated any puppy answering their description. In late January, an Alcoy clinic treated a female American Staffy puppy whose owner explained that he bought it for €200 from a person who assured him that it was his own dog.

The dog was confir med as one of the stolen litter a n d t h e s e l l e r, a 2 7 - y e a r old Spanish man from Cocentaina, was arrested and charged with theft. Meanwhile, the Guardia Civil are now trying to trace the other dogs.

REMDESIVIR: The Ministry of Health in Spain has assured it has enough stocks to treat seriously ill patients with Covid-19 until next October. THE Ministry of Health of Spain has assured it has enough stocks of Remdesivir to treat seriously ill patients with Covid-19 until next October. By the time the stocks run out, the company that manufactures the drug will already have new doses of the treatment available. This is one of the few medicines that has shown to be effective when fighting against the coronavirus. María Jesús Lamas, the director of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, has confirmed

this reserve of stocks after news hit that the United States (the country worst affected by the pandemic worldwide) had purchased the majority of the remaining Remdesivir stocks. Gilead, the manufacturer of this Covid wonder drug, estimates that there will be more treatments available around October, which is when the new production of the drug is ready. A spokesperson has assured that any patients in Spain who have needed access to the drug have had access to it.

THE National Police surprised a young man on July 2 whilst he was strangling his girlfriend in a flat in the district of Carabanchel in Madrid. The man was caught red-handed with a dominating stance over the woman and he has now been arrested for it. The incident took place at 1.15am in the morning on Jaibru Street in the Vista Alegre neighbourhood. The National Police branch received a call reporting a violent discussion in the house. When police officers arrived at the scene, they found a 27-year-old Honduran man with his hands around his partner’s neck, who

is 28 years of age. The aggressor was detained in the room and there was blood around the victim which was from a blow she received to the nose, which they think has possibly been fractured. She also suffered from various bruises from previous abuse and the victim was quickly transported to the Emergency Room of a hospital in Madrid. The aggressive detainee has a history of abuse and even a record of attempted homicide in the realm of gendered violence. He now has a report against him for sexual violence and also has a restraining order against the victim.

In fact, last March 2019, the Spanish exchanged 1,331 million pesetas in banknotes (€8 million) and 332 million pesetas in coins (€2 million). According to the Bank

of Spain, more than 18 years after the euro was put into circulation, the Spanish are still hoarding around 135,604 million pesetas in banknotes (€815 million) and 131,445 million pesetas in coins (€790 million). But this is the very last opportunity to exchange the currency. So if you are still hoarding old pesetas you now only have until the end of this year to exchange them for euros.

THE Guardia Civil has arrested 14 Spanish and Moroccan agricultural business owners in Granada, for offences against the rights of migrant workers, where five people have also been charged with encouraging illegal immigration and another four with renting out property unfit for living. The arrest, known as Operation Llano, took place in the municipalities of Zafarraya and Alhama de Granada, where the Guardia Civil reported 38 infractions including illegal immigration for-profit and violation of the right to decent housing. Most agricultural workers in Spain

are migrants, often in irregular situations, who are taken advantage of by employers, as they profit by being able to pay less per hour for workers without legal contracts or registration with the Social Security, and housed in sub-standard accommodation. The Guardia Civil found that many of the migrants were working up to 10 hours straight, with no right to weekly rest, and were paid between €5 and €6 an hour. Many were also housed in tool sheds, without insulation, enduring very high temperatures, with no electricity, drinking water, or toilets.

This damage must also have occurred as a result of the negligent action or omission by the doctor or by circumstances rather than natural causes. A negligent action would be, as mentioned above, supplying the wrong drug. On the other hand, an omission would be the decision not to perform a caesarean operation if considered medically necessary. Finally, there must be a causal relation between the two elements. In other words, the damage suffered must be the result of professional negligence. Can I claim for compensation if I have suffered medical negligence during childbirth or pregnancy?

If the aforementioned requirements are met, the injured party could claim compensation for the damages suffered. A recent ruling by the Criminal Court of Ciudad Real has resulted in the highest compensation award in Spain in a case of medical negligence during childbirth: €5.5 million, as in this case, lack of oxygen during childbirth left the baby quadriplegic. What is the amount of compensation? Currently, in Spain no rule exists to determine the value of damages in medical negligence cases. However, the Supreme Court has compromised and accepts the application of the scale for the valuation of the damages caused in

traffic accidents of Law 35/2015. This scale consists of a series of mathematical tables that relate to the severity of the damage suffered and provides an economic valuation. This method establishes three main pillars to calculate compensation: The damages and consequences suffered, the moral damages and the economic damage suffered. What is the deadline to submit a claim? The term to submit the claim to the courts is one year from the time of the alleged error if the negligence occurred in a public medical centre, by application of the rule of extracontractual liability of article 1968.2 of the Civil Code and five years

if it occurred in a private centre or through the actions of a private doctor, applying here the general rule for contractual liability of article 1964 of the Civil Code. The term will coincide with the day when the damage occurred or from the day the damage was known, or if the injury has consequences from when the final injuries are established. DISPUTE: Suspect wanted revenge on ‘noisy neighbours.’ POLICE in Madrid have arrested a man who allegedly set fire to his own house to ‘get back at his noisy neighbours,’ one of whom died from ‘complications resulting from inhaling smoke.’ The events took place in Carabanchel in the early hours of Monday morning, June 29. Days before, the detained had been accumulating garbage, card-

board and even wheels inside his home, and around 4am, he set fire to the lot and left the house Minutes later, the intense black smoke and heat from the fire had affected the staircase, the patio and other houses. Firefighters were called and extinguished the flames, while paramedics treated two women for slight smoke inhalation at the scene.

A 52-year-old man was taken to the Gomez Ulla Hospital with ‘smoke poisoning and a previous health history.’ A middle-aged woman suffered smoke inhalation, which aggravated other health conditions, and she died two days later. National Police have now arrested the suspect and he will undergo a psychological examination.

Banned eyelashes FRENCH beauty brand Sephora which has a number of outlets in Spain has told animal rights organisation PETA that it will join many other companies in banning the sale of mink eyelashes from its stores. PETA has been running a campaign

against this fashion accessory and targeted the Sephora Group, one of the largest businesses of its kind and after it received 280,000 emails from concerned consumers it gave in. According to the campaign, Sephora incorrectly suggested that their product was

‘cruelty free’ when in fact undercover investigations showed mink being treated badly in special farms and having their necks broken when they were no longer of use. As far as PETA is concerned this is another step forward in reducing cruelty to animals.

THIS year, the President of the Spanish Football, former footballer Luis Rubiales is standing for re-election, but will be opposed by another ex-footballer Antonio Torres who played in the minor leagues before becoming a referee. Mallo returned to Galicia around 15 years ago but he frequently visits England as his children still live up north. Nevertheless, an indisposition forced Mallo to be admitted into the hospital in Bolton for a total of 24 hours. A very expensive day at the hospital. Despite receiving British Social Security benefits from his retirement fund after 38 years of working in the UK, Mallo was forced to pay up. He did not have his National Health System Card on him, nor could he remember the number. He did have his European Health Card but that was expired, and his Spanish card was rejected on this occasion, unlike previous times. “How can they pay my pension, but not find me in the system!” exclaimed Mallo. RYANAIR has stated that it will clear 90 per cent of the backlog by the end of July for people who were unable to travel during lockdown. There have been a huge number of complaints over the company’s failure to pay back customers in a timely manner, (the company says in its contract agreement that it will attempt to pay back any losses in seven days). All airline passengers have the right to either a refund, to rebook, or to accept a voucher for future travel. Customers had said that the time it was taking to refund them was unacceptable, but the company has stated that due to huge demand a backlog had built up,

Colour-coded THE Castillo on the Canfali headland between the Levante and Poniente beaches can now be floodlit in different colours. As well as highlighting the emblematic Castillo, the colours can now celebrate special occasions. This was noticeable the night before the flying visit to Benidorm last week by King Felipe and Queen Letizia when Canfali was lit up with the red and yellow colours of the Spanish flag. POSIDONIA CAMPAIGN: Introducing impacting images. THE Fundacion Oceanografic and Javea’s Tourist department launched their joint Xabia es Posidonia (Javea is Posidonia) campaign. There will be ‘mupi’ panels in the town’s streets and at bus shelters while Projecte Xabia, involving pupils at local schools, is taking a prominent part in the campaign. Images with great visual impact and strong messages have been chosen to bring home to the public the need to protect the underwater meadows of Posidonia (Neptune

Grass). Twenty-five of these are the work of the Javea pupils. “Children provide us with a very different vision,” said the Oceanografic’s Paco Torner, who is also behind the Projecte Xabia. “No-one is more honest than a child.” The Javea is Posidonia campaign continues throughout the summer when many boats moor off the town’s coast, making it vitally important to remind the public of the need to protect the Neptune Grass that is essential to the marine ecosystem.

ISN’T it strange that the Xunta de Galicia has decided to close the region of A Mariña (Lugo) due to an outbreak of 100 infected by Covid-19, a move that will affect the 80,000 people who reside in the region, at a time that will overlap the autonomous elections? There are only six days left for the elections in Galicia and the Galicians with the right to vote who have tested positive in A Mariña do not know if they will be able to vote on Sunday, July 12. It will be the Xunta themselves that must clarify this issue, while the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) calls for the suspension of the elections in this area to give every resident a chance to vote. The closure of this region limits the movements of its inhabitants, who are pro-

Llano has been openly critical of the five days of confinement and rightly so. Monkey labour IT is said that monkeys have been trained to pick coconuts for thousands of years in Thailand, but animal rights group PETA has revealed that this still happens and supermarkets around the world have been selling coconut water and oil from such sources. Many have switched from traditional milk products in order to help prevent cruelty to animals, but those people would be horrified to discover that some monkeys are kidnapped when young, kept in horrific conditions and made to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day according to PETA. According to the group, Boots, Morrisons, Waitrose, Ocado and the Co-op in the UK have either suspended sales or undertaken not to sell any of these products sourced from monkey labour again.

Bank of Spain report by John Smith THE Bank of Spain has published its overview of the effects of the Covid­ 19 pandemic on the Spanish econo­ my and what it expects for the future. It recognises that the figures ex­ pected of GDP growth in 2020 will not be reached but highlights the fact that even before the lockdown, growth was sluggish. On the plus side however, it does expect to see a decent bounce back in 2021 and believes that the economy is much stronger than it was in 2008

They must be declared in the investment part of the tax form. I have a Swedish an­ nuity with a fixed time of 20 years. I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent. But I think this is wrong. What percentage of the yearly amount should be declared? Then we were told that there is a Horizontal Divide on the property, which has to be legally removed. We now need a minor building licence to do some small repairs using a builder. I find that I cannot do this as I am still not paying IBI and because I cannot obtain an AFO. Could you possibly shed some light on a way forward?

Mortgage holiday might mean problem with new loan.

WHEN the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK announced that those suf­ fering from financial difficul­ ties during lockdown could apply for a three­month mortgage holiday (which has since been extended by a further three months) they inferred that this would not affect individuals credit rat­ ings. Whilst this is technically true, the reality is somewhat different as a number of British borrowers are now finding out as it appears that if they want to apply for a separate loan, they may well be declined because

banks have the option to check their bank statement and see that the mortgage holidays had been taken. According to the BBC, Vir­ gin Money has said that it will not let use of the mort­ gage holiday affect its lend­ ing decisions but other banks and lenders are prov­ ing to be less amenable. A spokesman for Halifax (part of Lloyds Bank Group) has advised customers to restart mortgage payments for at least three months be­ fore applying for a loan, so it looks as if what appeared a lifeline at the time might end up as a mixed blessing.

On that date, the number had reduced to 1.75 million workers and the numbers appeared to be dropping by around 5 per cent each week, helped by the fact that the Spanish government was effectively paying compensa­ tion to companies to take workers back.

Another possibility, being ex­ pounded by the think tank Reso­ lution Foundation is that the Treasury should give adults and children free vouchers to spend in the areas most badly affected by the Covid­19 pandemic at a possible cost of £30 billion (€32 billion).

Can’t have everything...

I NOTICE the drug fuelled gangs around the UK’s cities are observing the social distancing laws in their own unique fashion. Not wanting to be arrested for breaking the rules, they are now maintaining their distance by shooting people instead of stabbing them! Three recent murders have been implemented by the gun. Pretty soon we will have an incident where an ‘innocent’ hooded looter (an undoubted pillar of society, who was such a lovely son!) gets shot by the police, when all he was actually brandishing at them was a biro pen. The fact that it was pointed from a distance at the police, who had to react in a split second, will have no bearing on the incident whatsoever and some unfortunate police officer will be hauled over the coals, experience severe trauma and probably lose his job, because he didn’t wait to get shot before defending himself! Out will come the omnipotent victim/ racist card and BLM sympathisers will use the incident to demonstrate their grudges across the land. Others will utilise it as an excuse to riot, loot and pillage.

An utterly disproportionate amount of non-white ‘guests’ will appear on the media, which will include multi-millionaire show biz and sports personalities, all lamenting to a suitably sad and extremely sympathetic presenter, how badly they’ve all been treated. Thousands more naïve individuals will ‘take the knee’ and the UK will have taken another step toward the total disintegration of a culture and society that millions of our

ancestors fought and died to create. Sad innit!? One bright occurrence in all of this has actually emanated from the BBC, who last week, somewhat surprisingly, ordered announcers and their guests not to show support or display BLM badges while on air. Apparently they, and a number of other high profile companies, consider the movement has been hijacked for political reasons after members criticised Israel and supported

defunding the police. Well I’ve got news for the BBC; it’s ALWAYS been a political movement. It simply uses the racist card to drum up support and encourage mayhem. I also have news for its supporters. The movement was originally formed by three black lesbian women, who not only insist on LGPT power, but also want to ban all black heterosexual men from ever attaining a position in the BLM leadership. So put that in your macho knee pad and kneel on it! I also notice that SKY has deemed not to implement this ban. Well, with ilk of Alan Bolton and Kay Burley involved, they wouldn’t would they? Thank you all so much for a positive deluge of birthday wishes. To be quite honest, actually managing to hit 40 took me by surprise; 81 is nothing short of ludicrous! Anyway I had a lovely day, apart from arriving home from my daughter’s party to find the dog had eaten my top of the range, sparkling new birthday present electric shaver. All that Glitters

SUZANNE MANNERS SOMETIMES beauty really is skin deep. Not only that but deceptive too. We give much credit to the beautiful at the expense of the deep. Just recently I have been working on a series of pen and ink drawings based on toxic tropical flowers. These delicate, colour ful and incredibly beautiful plants are deadly to man and beast. The plant in the picture is called a Rosary Pea and the hard seeds have been used for centuries to make beaded necklaces and bracelets. There are stories of jewellers who have died after working with the seeds which kind of begs the question ‘why?’ We are entranced and bewitched by physical beauty and become blind to what is real or dangerous. Nature is excellent at this deception, lulling us into dangerous decisions; we pick the pretty

Paying in cash is a nightmare MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man ANYONE tried to pay cash into a bank lately? If so you’ll know that it’s a nightmare. It’s almost impossible to get them to take your money personally. They want you to stand in the street and pay it in a note at a time. At the moment you can’t even get in the bank without queuing in the street to be let in one at a time. Of course, there is still only one teller working. Mrs S tried a few times and has found that every branch and bank has different rules. One won’t let you pay in after 11am. Another branch of the same bank will let you pay in anytime. One will only let you pay via the machine. But there is a way round this if you just want to give your money to the teller and done with. Let’s say you want to pay in €1,200 . They will say put it in machine. But if you pay in €1,201 they have to take the cash off you as the machine will not take coins. Job done. You don’t

have to stand on display outside where everyone knows what you are doing. Ryanair is at it again. My pal had several trips booked and had to cancel them all. He asked Ryanair for his money back. They said it could be done or they would give him vouchers which could be used at any time. He agreed to vouchers. Once they started taking bookings again he booked his son a flight to come over and tried to use one of the vouchers only to be told that he couldn’t because the voucher was not transferable. He tried to point out that he had the option to get his money back but took the option for vouchers at their request. They, of course, sprouted on about terms and conditions. So folks there is a lesson for you. If you get an option of a refund take it because then you can buy a ticket from any airline and not get tied up in gawd knows how many phone calls, emails and online chats trying to sort out a name change which, by the way, was only the first name as the surname is the same! I spent too much of my precious thoughts on those pointless desires. Thought and time which should have been spent making the best life possible. Doing what I wanted to do instead of trying to gain affirmation from people who meant nothing to me. Age brings wisdom (unfortunately it also brings wrinkles, aching joints and flatulence) and a certain invisibility which at first is confusing but soon becomes liberating. I no longer care what anyone thinks of the way I look. I swim and walk to stay healthy, not slim (that tanker sank a long time ago), I eat salad be-

cause I like salad but I also eat bread and pasta and I drink, not to excess, but to get drunk. The surface is rumpled but underneath I am smooth. Underneath I am beautiful. I paint and write and I paint and write what I want to paint and write (and I am very partial to long ungrammatical sentences). Real beauty is more than skin deep. A beautiful smile in a wrinkled face denoting a wicked sense of humour. A twinkle in the eye that is the prelude to a most wonderful dialogue. We look beyond the surface and discover treasure. Not to look further puts us in danger of a toxic reaction. Belladonna has pretty pink flowers but I wouldn’t want them in my house. So clear away the toxic flowers from your lives no matter how pretty or colourful and dance to your own soundtrack and enjoy being you. Toodle pip !

CoronaMoaners GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY A S w i t h t h e b e s t i ro n y, I ’ l l b e ironic, moaning, about those who moan. Or, the Corona-Moaners, as I call them. For the last 16 weeks, we’ve witnessed all levels of moaning; from those, who felt being ‘trapped at home’ was too much to handle. Those who felt, being unable to go to their favourite restaurants was a ‘liberty.’ To those, who found wearing a simple face mask, was the ‘end of the world.’ And of course, those who felt their lives may end, when they couldn’t get a b l o w d r y. O h y e s , t h e y ’ v e moaned. No matter how many lost their lives to Covid-19, the CoronaMoaners, just couldn’t help themselves. As the daily death toll, spiralled inter nationally, they kept Facebook busy with their rants. Late night chat forums were filled with bonkers conspiracy theories. If one dared disagree, they moaned. Agree, they found something else to moan about. Block them, they moaned, but luckily, we could no longer hear them. Those who moan, love any excuse to do so. It rains they complain, the sun shines, and it’s too hot. For this select few, the dreaded virus was the icing on the cake of negativity. They’re the same type, who spend every waking minute caught up in yawn-full, and certainly questionable, ‘debates’ in the comment sections. No matter the country, it seems the Corona-Moaners, found serious fault with every politician, medical expert, or person, who didn’t share their dreary outlook. Going as far as blaming prime ministers for the ‘handling’ of the outbreak. Of course, in hindsight, yes certain things, could have been handled differently, in certain countries. However, faced with a ravaging, and raging mystery virus, we, the non-moaners, did what we could,

SPARE ME: But I know my hopes are in vain. and even though, we may not have liked it, we get on with it, with tight lips and a brave face. So now, as we emerge into what we call the ‘new normal,’ life feels almost as before. Surely it’s time for the moaning to stop? One would hope. But of course, those who are finally able to have their hair tended to, now moan that they have to wear a face mask while doing so. Those who longed for pasta alla vongole, can’t stand the fact, that hand sanitiser must be used upon entering restaurants. And finally, to those who’ve whinged, moaned and cried, about the fact they may not be able to have their annual twoweek sojourn to the sun. Now that air travel has returned, albeit with restrictions, to the Corona-Moaners, it’s just not the same. And it’s simply not good enough. I look to the sky, and I plead to be spared from these dreadful people, for all eternity. However, as sure as night becomes day, I know my hopes are in vain. Instead, I continue to smile and be grateful, for all we have. And moreover, for the fact that my loved ones are healthy and safe. Keep smiling, keep going, and stay positive. As for the Corona-Moaners, I say, leave them to it. I for one, have far bigger fish to fry.

POSITIVE REALITY DEAR Euro Weekly News, Ok, I am ready for these tourists, bring them on. We can handle it. It will just be a little bit of a shock to the system as our streets and beaches have been quiet for so long. Hopefully, all it can bring is good news. As a business owner, my family are struggling. If we cannot bring any money in over the summer we will be out of here come winter. This will be a great shame as the kids are at school here and their friends are here, this is really our home now. However, I am realistic, I know it could all go down the sink. All we must do is keep pushing on, stay safe and we can all get through this. We are strong enough. Let’s have a successful summer!!! Say a prayer Dear Euro Weekly News, Should I be worried? I see mentions in the Spanish papers and whispers of infections growing again, are we on our way into another lockdown? I don’t think I could handle it. Actually, I don’t think Spain could handle it. People would have to just work on through any virus now or there would be

OUR VIEW Habit forming ARE we now becoming a world controlled by fear. With every ending conversation, email or text punctuated by a STAY SAFE, are we perpetuating our own worries and also projecting them on others whilst creating a constant circle of being scared. Stay indoors, wear a mask, don’t pay in cash, work from home. The demands are growing and we are ensured that if we do what we are told we will have nothing to worry about. Why should it take the threat of a virus to kill rebellion? Why should laws be created on the spot by people who have never had the experience of solving these problems. With our fear and obedience an obsession has grown, the world is magnified, your every thought and action is magnified. If you breathe outside will you die? Does that person in the street have that KILLER virus? We are desperately painting ourselves into a corner with an endless pot of paint, it’s time to crack a window and breathe. So have we been brainwashed, figures don’t lie, do they? The government would never lie, would it? We are now waiting with baited breath (behind a sweaty mask) for our next order from on high. Let’s hope that it is a habit we can break. It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change. We are now living a new lifestyle. Maybe our next order will be to take back our freedom, to think for ourselves... as long as we stay safe whilst doing it.

Masks mayhem Dear Euro Weekly News, I split my time between the coast where I have an apartment and an inland town where I work. In the hilltop town, absolutely everyone is respecting the restrictions, keeping their distance and using a mask pretty much all the time. Since the start of the pandemic, the town registered not one case of infection. I came down to the coast this morning and went for a coffee in San Pedro Alcántara. I was appalled at the number of people who were acting as if nothing had changed. Many, many people (mainly expats and/or tourists) were not wearing masks in a crowded street where it was impossible to keep any sort of safe distance. In the coffee house, people were entering and queuing without masks and were jostling together. The tables were not being cleared between customers never mind cleaned and disinfected. We did not endure three months of strict lockdown to have it all ruined by a casual disregard for others’ health. A complete lack of consideration and respect means there WILL be a second wave and those of us who have abided by the regulations and whose businesses face enormous problems will be the ones to suffer yet again while the uncaring tourists get to fly home. We all have a little voice in our head, the inner critic, the voice of destructive thoughts towards ourselves, our internal enemy that can affect our self-esteem and confidence and my internal critic was VERY LOUD! She convinced me that I was not worthy of success, love, or happiness and convinced me I would always fail. I became depressed and knew I needed to change! In 2018, I decided to study how the mind worked using Cognitive

ABC MODEL: Strengthen and reinforce your beliefs. Behavioural Therapy techniques. I learned why we all have the inner critic, where it comes from, and how to quieten the noise. How thoughts become feelings, feelings

become behaviours and, behaviours increase further negative thoughts. Our brain’s primary purpose is to protect us, therefore, when we are faced with a situation

where there is any doubt, our brain automatically tells us ‘don’t do that, you will fail’ or, ‘If you do this, you will get hurt.’ When this happens, we tend to listen, feel the fear, and convince ourselves that we are not good enough. How Do We Silence Our Inner Critic? A technique that I teach my clients is called ‘The ABC Model.’ The ABC model not only helps to reinforce the casual relationship between beliefs and consequences but also shows us that consequences often strengthen and reinforce our beliefs, further maintaining our emotional discomfort. What Is The ABC Model?

A = Activating Event (A stressful event that leads to negative emotions) B = Beliefs (Negative thoughts, assumptions, judgements, worries, and demands on yourself or others) C = Consequences (What is the emotional, behavioural, and physical consequence of thinking this way?) For example, with green or hazel eyes, try purple based shadows and liners. To make blue eyes brighter, use deep navy and other blues. Those lucky brown-eyed girls can get away with almost any hue. Bright eyes mean

health and beauty, but sometimes they could do with a little boost. Red eyes? Soothing drops will offer an instant pick-meup and put that sparkle back in your eyes. Line your inner rims with a white pencil to make your eyes look brighter, or use black liner at night for the same effect. A yellow-based foundation or eye primer

can really help with red skin around your eyes. If you have deep-set eyes, stick with medium tones on the eyelids, go lighter in the contour, and stress the lash line. Skip colours that are too dark. For close-set eyes, highlight the outer corners and avoid dark shadow on the inner corners. Pull wide-set eyes together with dark shadow in the inner corners. Layering makes eye shadow and eyeliner last. For maximum staying power, use eye primer over your whole eyelid. Then, dust your lids with loose or pressed translucent powder. Apply eye shadow, blend, and apply powder again.

A big shout out to Michel, Steven and red army at EWN head office for their support and hard work in helping and enabling me to get my story across and help others. I tend to write my columns replacing ‘me’ for ‘we’ - however this week I’m going to write about ME - give an honest insight to Ms Bipolar. These last two weeks I have struggled - yes, really struggled! I have used every bit of my energy and strength to carry on fighting this uphill battle. I have had my doctor on speed dial making tweaks here and there and giving me the professional support I very much needed. But I have also looked after ME… I have laughed w i t h family a n d

friends, I have sunbathed, I have done silly T ikTok dance routines with my daughter, I have gone to bed early, made my bed every single morning and … ‘drum roll… please...’ not had any alcoholic beverages in three weeks!! These little achievements may seem unimportant to most people but to me, they are a reminder that I am still in control and I’m not losing myself to my illness. Just because one day, one week, or more of your life is rough, doesn’t mean things will be that way forever. I know the next couple of weeks will be tough but I also know that I am strong enough to come out of this the other side. I finally understand the gravity of my illness and when I need to ask for help. This disorder can be fatal if not managed properly I’m both a survivor and an advocate. I want to give hope to the millions of people whose lives have been affected by bipolar disorder. I’m living proof that a bipolar disorder diagnosis is not a death sentence. I haven’t just survived, I’ve thrived. And while I’ve had many professional and personal achievements, I’m most proud of my constant recovery. I am unapologetically ME! Do I need a Spanish Will?

IT’S a subject that no-one likes talking about - but it is a conversation that everyone needs to have. Have you got your affairs in order if anything should happen to you? Estimates vary, but it is generally agreed that around two thirds of British people do not have a Will. And if a British national who owns assets in Spain dies without a Will, matters can and do - become rather complicated. The Spanish legal system is very different when it comes to the inheritance procedure compared to other countries like the UK. It is also worth noting that Spanish inheritance law also varies from region to region. Legal experts at Sun Lawyers, a Spanish law firm with more than 30 years of experience and several offices across the Costa

MAKING A WILL: Ensures the inheritance procedure is straightforward and less costly. Blanca, say that makes it vital to get the right advice. Its spokesman says: “You really must have a Spanish Will if you have property or any other assets over here. “We recently got a letter from a gentleman about the sad story of his wife passing away and she had not made a Spanish Will

involving her property in this country. “That has sadly seen extra stress for him at a time when he does not need it, and it has also cost him thousands of euros to sort everything out.” Having a Spanish Will ensures that the inheritance procedure is straightforward and less costly.

EU citizens living in Spain, as well as a number of non-EU countries, can now choose whether the law of their home country or their country of residence applies. If a foreign resident dies without leaving a Will or making an official declaration on which law they wish to apply, the law of the country where they resided for the last five years will apply. If your estate is dealt with under Spanish inheritance law, forced heirship rules apply known as the Law of Obligatory Heirs in Spain. This means there are restrictions on how you distribute your estate, as a specific percentage needs to be set aside for certain relatives. If you die without leaving a Spanish Will, the laws of intestate succession apply. In Spanish succession law, this means that the estate will be inherited by the following -

taking into account the Law of Obligatory Heirs: • children of the deceased • if there are no children, the parents • if no children or parents, the surviving spouse • if there are none of these, then the next closest blood relatives (up to a fourth-grade limit in the family tree) • if there are no legal beneficiaries from any of these groups, then the Spanish state inherits the estate! Making a Spanish Will can also help sort out what levels of inheritance tax are likely to be paid. The rules and Spanish inheritance tax rates vary according to the relationship between the donor and beneficiary, although generally unmarried couples and stepchildren pay more tax than spouses and natural children.

Denmark’s high court has ruled that Rojadirecta is illegal and must be blocked by Danish ISPs. The Spanish company that administers Rojadirecta, Puerto 80 Projects, appealed an initial ruling claiming that its platform is not illegal as it also legally provides certain content. However, the high court sided with the Danish Rights Alliance and La Liga in their argument that a service dedicated to illegal activities is illegal, regardless of the presence of legal content. Previously, Rojadirecta gained 19,000 Danish visitors in one month, allowing consumers to access live sport such as La Liga matches. Director of the Danish Rights Alliance, Maria Fredenslund, said “This means that there is now access to block services that offer illegal TV and live sports. This is a hugely important development, especially for broadcasters who at great expense pays for exclusive rights to sports content.”
