ALMUÑECAR’S first Third Age centenary, Emilia Fernández Jerónimo, has celebrated her 100th birthday in style. The town hall organised a special birthday party, inviting her family from across Spain, and presented the ‘illustrious neighbour’ with a plaque and a bouquet of flowers. The Third Age complex resident was born in the neighbouring town of Jete on July 7, 1920, and married Almuñecar resident Antonio Rivas Alba before they emigrated to Argentina. Boat Half a million rescue euros on sport

THE Maritime Service rescued four immigrants from near the coast of Granada and took them to the port of Motril where they were attended by Red Cross. The males of Maghreb origin were travelling in a boat 3.5 metres long, which was intercepted the Guardia Civil’s external surveillance system about 5.5 miles from Cape Sacratif, in Torrenueva Costa, at 9.30am on Tuesday, July 7. According to Efe sources, all are in good physical condition and none of those rescued required ‘specific attention.’ All four men have now been placed in the care of the National Police, who have transferred them to police facilities in Motril.

Cash free car parks CREDIT: Ayuntamiento de Velez-Malaga

INVESTMENT: Councillor J Hipólito Gómez announces the council’s initiatives. VELEZ-MALAGA has invested half a million euros in the last year improving sports facilities in the town. Councillor for Sports and Youth, J Hipólito Gómez, explained that “in the commitment to continuously improve services, pools and sports facilities in

the municipality, over €530,000 has been spent in the last 12 months.” In addition, 1,143 places on training courses aimed at young people to help improve access to the labour market will also be offered. Gómez added: “In the last year have reached

23,000 municipal users of our facilities, 3,000 more than the previous season. The number of people participating in various activities has also increased considerably, with more than 800 users per month in room activities and 2,300 users per month in the pool.” The council has opened new facilities, built next to the indoor pool in VelezMalaga, which offers Indoor Cycle activities and the number of Functional Training sessions have also been increased. Summer camps and other seasonal activities have been upped and new turf will be installed at the Vivar Tellez stadium.

NEW machines for credit card payments have been installed in Almuñecar car parks San Cristóbal and Velilla. Since the car parks opened nine years ago, payment could only be made in cash, with the maximum denomination being €20, which led to complaints from users. Councillor for Security and Traffic, Francisco Robles Rivas, said: “The new ATMs have been installed in these underground car parks in order to meet the demand that users have been making for some time. “The new ATMs, which represent an investment of almost €30,000, are equipped with a credit card payment system so that users can pay comfortably and in line with conditions brought about by the pandemic.” He added: “In both car parks, whose current rates are very low, a proposal has been made to amend the ordinance regulating summer season tickets where demand exceeds supply. In winter, the opposite occurs, and therefore, to encourage residents to use the car park, season tickets of €32 per month will be proposed.”

Beach access AN assisted bathing service for people with mobility problems will be activated in Motril’s beaches next week. The service, provided by the Red Cross, has been adapted to the regulations, and so it

must be booked in advance and users must be accompanied. Two monitors will be on hand at the access point next to Villa Astrida to access Playa Granada on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week, between 12 noon and 8pm, until August 31. The service is aimed at people with functional diversity, the elderly, young people or children with reduced mobility, people with disabilities, people with pathologies, etc. José Lemos, of Coastal Development, Tourism and Beaches, said: “We want to promote assisted bathing on the beach for people and contribute to their well-being and improve their quality of life, accessing the enjoyment of outdoor activities and bathing in the sea.” To book the service, visit the Motril Town Hall Tourist Office or call 958 825 481.

NERJA Town Hall will receive €295,870 from the Andalucian Government to undertake around 30 contracts, framed in the Plan for Activation, Promotion and Recovery of Employment, AIR, for unemployed people affected by the coronavirus crisis. This was stated by Carmen Sánchez Sierra, Territorial Delegate for Employment in Malaga, at a press conference last week with the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo. The selection of personnel will be made by the town hall itself from among the candidates sent by the Andalucian Employment Service. The subsidised amount is distributed by age brackets, €126,131 for young people between 18 and 29 years old, €90,570 for people between 30 and 44 years old, and €79,178 for over 45 years old.

THE President of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Axarquia, José Juan Jiménez has signed the service contract with the manager of the AcciónMK company, Manuela Aránega, who will be in charge of the promotion campaign ‘Axarquía Costa del Sol, ganas de verte’ through social networks. This will last until December 31 with the aim of attracting new visitors to the region. The social media management project is based on the creation of a ‘turismo axarquiacostadelsol’ profile on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. In addition to publications, weekly content will be generated and a bi-monthly contest will be organised to boost social networks with the aim of reaching a wider audience. The objective is to relaunch the Axarquia destination with half a dozen actions that affect the excellence of the region, the quality of its services and the safety of this holiday destination in the face of the pandemic.

Big budget A NEW film by the Malaga director Macarena Astorga, named ‘La Casa del Caracol,’ has begun filming and includes many settings and landscapes from the Axarquia region. Since the director has chosen natural ‘sets,’ locations as different as the cliffs of MaroCerro Gordo and the Pyrenees of Axarquia, in Alfarnatejo, appear in the film. They have even stopped at the Mondron district. The director wanted to show the different variety of landscapes, and avoid the typical beach movies filmed on the Costa del Sol. The budget for this film, which marks the debut in the direction of Macarena Astorga, the psychological horror-thriller ‘La Casa del Caracol,’ amounts to €2.4 million.

Beaches blocked TWO of the five coastal towns in Axarquia suffered an avalanche of bathers on their beaches on Sunday, July 5.

Another 20 beaches throughout the province also exceeded the numbers recommended for social distancing to fight the coronavirus. Specifically, throughout Nerja, five beaches reached 100 per cent of their capacity: Calahonda, Caletilla, Carabeo, Carabeillo and Maro (in the latter, the barrier that allowed vehicle access was closed; this was also done at the start of the de-escalation, June

21). It so happens that they are beaches with a reduced capacity as they are not large areas. In addition, throughout the day there was also high occupancy in Nerja and Rincón de la Victoria. The town halls are the ones that have the competence in their contingency plans to establish the limits of capacity and to ensure these are complied with through the Local Police or the Proteccion Civil.

ON Monday July 6 the Spanish Government launched a new residency document for UK nationals who are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement - the Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero or TIE. This means some changes to the appointments process and that anyone registering from now on will be issued with the biometric TIE card, rather than the current green paper document. Spain is one of the first EU countries to bring in a new residency system for British nationals and HMA Hugh Elliott welcomed its introduction. He also clarified what it means for UK nationals in a short video saying: “ We ’ v e s e e n l o t s o f q u e s t i o n s and concerns on social media, so I want to underline two key points. First, I want to assure you that all British nationals, who are legally resident in Spain by the end of this year, will have their rights protected, including the right to live and

THE use of sensors in farming can allow farmers to know if a crop is being over irrigated or, on the contrary, is suffering from water stress, and even if is enduring excess heat.

However, the University of Malaga and the agrarian transformation society Trops, which is the largest marketer of avocado and mango of national origin, are working to advance the

use of data and artificial intelligence to monitor tropical crops, which in the province have become a key pillar of agriculture. The project, which lasts until December 2021, will have special importance for tropical crops in Axarquia and the Granada coast, as it will be a tool available to Trops technicians for advanced monitoring of these crops, according to Aldana. The project carried out by UMA and Trops, called TROPICAL-IA, seeks to create an advanced artificial intelligence microservice software platform that supports the monitoring of tropical crops and enables rapid decisionmaking. Among other things is the early detection of pests and diseases or to determine the optimal harvest time of a plantation.

New autobiography LOCAL restaurateur and long-time Spanish resident, Garry Waite, has just had his second book published. The first, a novel based in Spain, The Warm War was reprinted in 2018, but this tome is an autobiographical look at his life in two halves: Starting from his early years in the UK until his present day on the Costa del Sol. The story of an ordinary chap, from an ordinary background who made some not so ordinary choices in life: As someone who decided to move to Spain in the early 80’s and was determined to stay for the duration, put him in the almost pioneering sphere. A time when there were less than maybe 5,000 expats living in Spain it was a sort of fledgling ‘club.’ It was never easy and when

THE flamenco singer, Juan Pinilla, presented his latest album ‘Humana Raíz,’ which is his fifth album, on Saturday, July 4, at the El Majuelo Park auditorium. Pinilla was in charge of opening the great musical concert at the open-air auditorium, conditioned with the pertinent sanitary measures to fight Coronavirus. The record work ‘Humana Raíz’ is composed by lyrics by Juan Pinilla himself and he was accompanied on stage by guitars, David Caro and Antonio de Luz, guitars, Javier Rabadán, percussion and the special collaboration of bailaora Anabel Brown. Juan Pinilla, a well-known and beloved singer in Almuñecar and La Herradura where he has coordinated the Manuel ‘El Ruso’ Memorial, has been distinguished, among others, with the Mining Lamp of the La Unión Mine Festival, considered one of the awards most important in flamenco and dedicated to workers who are victims of workplace accidents.

WILL THEY VOTE?: Region closed after an outbreak of 100 infected by Covid-19.

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL ISN’T it strange that the Xunta de Galicia has decided to close t h e re g i o n o f A M a r i ñ a ( L u g o ) due to an outbreak of 100 infected by Covid-19, a move that w i l l a ff e c t t h e 8 0 , 0 0 0 p e o p l e who reside in the region, at a time that will overlap the autonomous elections? There are only six days left for the elections in Galicia and the Galicians with the right to vote who have tested positive in A Mariña do not know if they will be able to vote on Sunday, July 12. It will be the Xunta themselves that must clarify this issue, while the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) calls for the suspension of the elections in this area to give every resident a chance to vote. The closure of this region limits the movements of its inhabitants, who are prohibited from entering and leaving the health district except for work and other just cause. Of course, residents are not restricted in their movements and the closure of A Mariña does not imply house confinement. According to the Health Councillor of the Xunta, Jesús Vázquez Almuiña, all those who have a

PCR that confirms that they are infected with coronavirus will not be able to vote. Their close contacts, already numbered 1,200, and who have a negative PCR, will be able to exercise their right to vote. They must come, like any other person, with a mask. Many have switched from traditional milk products in order to help prevent cruelty to animals, but those people would be horrified to discover that some monkeys are kidnapped when young, kept in horrific conditions and made to pick up to 1,000 coconuts a day according to PETA. Bank of Spain report by John Smith THE Bank of Spain has published its overview of the effects of the Covid­ 19 pandemic on the Spanish econo­ my and what it expects for the future. It recognises that the figures ex­ pected of GDP growth in 2020 will not be reached but highlights the fact that even before the lockdown, growth was sluggish. On the plus side however, it does expect to see a decent bounce back in 2021 and believes that the economy is much stronger than it was in 2008

and should therefore be ready to weather the economic storm quicker and with more resilience than previ­ ously. It sees a need to recognise the im­ portance of remote working as prior to the State of Alarm less than 10 per cent of the working population worked from external sites but it be­ lieves that up to 80 per cent of those not on ERTE worked online during the lockdown. They must be declared in the investment part of the tax form. I have a Swedish an­ nuity with a fixed time of 20 years. I find that I cannot do this as I am still not paying IBI and because I cannot obtain an AFO. Could you possibly shed some light on a way forward?

Mortgage holiday might mean problem with new loan.

WHEN the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK announced that those suf­ fering from financial difficul­ ties during lockdown could apply for a three­month mortgage holiday (which has since been extended by a further three months) they inferred that this would not affect individuals credit rat­ ings. Whilst this is technically true, the reality is somewhat different as a number of British borrowers are now finding out as it appears that if they want to apply for a separate loan, they may well be declined because

banks have the option to check their bank statement and see that the mortgage holidays had been taken. According to the BBC, Vir­ gin Money has said that it will not let use of the mort­ gage holiday affect its lend­ ing decisions but other banks and lenders are prov­ ing to be less amenable. A spokesman for Halifax (part of Lloyds Bank Group) has advised customers to restart mortgage payments for at least three months be­ fore applying for a loan, so it looks as if what appeared a lifeline at the time might end up as a mixed blessing.

Another possibility, being ex­ pounded by the think tank Reso­ lution Foundation is that the Treasury should give adults and children free vouchers to spend in the areas most badly affected by the Covid­19 pandemic at a possible cost of £30 billion (€32 billion).

I NOTICE the drug fuelled gangs around the UK’s cities are observing the social distancing laws in their own unique fashion. Not wanting to be arrested for breaking the rules, they are now maintaining their distance by shooting people instead of stabbing them! Three recent murders have been implemented by the gun. Pretty soon we will have an incident where an ‘innocent’ hooded looter (an undoubted pillar of society, who was such a lovely son!) gets shot by the police, when all he was actually brandishing at them was a biro pen. The fact that it was pointed from a distance at the police, who had to react in a split second, will have no bearing on the incident whatsoever and some unfortunate police officer will be hauled over the coals, experience severe trauma and probably lose his job, because he didn’t wait to get shot before defending himself! Out will come the omnipotent victim/ racist card and BLM sympathisers will use the incident to demonstrate their grudges across the land. Others will utilise it as an excuse to riot, loot and pillage.

Thousands more naïve individuals will ‘take the knee’ and the UK will have taken another step toward the total disintegration of a culture and society that millions of our

ancestors fought and died to create. Sad innit!? One bright occurrence in all of this has actually emanated from the BBC, who last week, somewhat surprisingly, ordered announcers and their guests not to show support or display BLM badges while on air. Apparently they, and a number of other high profile companies, consider the movement has been hijacked for political reasons after members criticised Israel and supported

defunding the police. Well I’ve got news for the BBC; it’s ALWAYS been a political movement. It simply uses the racist card to drum up support and encourage mayhem. I also have news for its supporters. The movement was originally formed by three black lesbian women, who not only insist on LGPT power, but also want to ban all black heterosexual men from ever attaining a position in the BLM leadership. So put that in your macho knee pad and kneel on it! I also notice that SKY has deemed not to implement this ban. Well, with ilk of Alan Bolton and Kay Burley involved, they wouldn’t would they? Thank you all so much for a positive deluge of birthday wishes. To be quite honest, actually managing to hit 40 took me by surprise; 81 is nothing short of ludicrous! Anyway I had a lovely day, apart from arriving home from my daughter’s party to find the dog had eaten my top of the range, sparkling new birthday present electric shaver. CoronaMoaners GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY A S w i t h t h e b e s t i ro n y, I ’ l l b e ironic, moaning, about those who moan. Or, the Corona-Moaners, as I call them. For the last 16 weeks, we’ve witnessed all levels of moaning; from those, who felt being ‘trapped at home’ was too much to handle. Those who felt, being unable to go to their favourite restaurants was a ‘liberty.’ To those, who found wearing a simple face mask, was the ‘end of the world.’ And of course, those who felt their lives may end, when they couldn’t get a b l o w d r y. O h y e s , t h e y ’ v e moaned. No matter how many lost their lives to Covid-19, the CoronaMoaners, just couldn’t help themselves. As the daily death toll, spiralled inter nationally, they kept Facebook busy with their rants. Late night chat forums were filled with bonkers conspiracy theories. If one dared disagree, they moaned. Agree, they found something else to moan about. Block them, they moaned, but luckily, we could no longer hear them. Those who moan, love any excuse to do so. It rains they complain, the sun shines, and it’s too hot. For this select few, the dreaded virus was the icing on the cake of negativity. They’re the same type, who spend every waking minute caught up in yawn-full, and certainly questionable, ‘debates’ in the comment sections. No matter the country, it seems the Corona-Moaners, found serious fault with every politician, medical expert, or person, who didn’t share their dreary outlook. Going as far as blaming prime ministers for the ‘handling’ of the outbreak. Of course, in hindsight, yes certain things, could have been handled differently, in certain countries. However, faced with a ravaging, and raging mystery virus, we, the non-moaners, did what we could,

Paying in cash is a nightmare MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man ANYONE tried to pay cash into a bank lately? If so you’ll know that it’s a nightmare. It’s almost impossible to get them to take your money personally. They want you to stand in the street and pay it in a note at a time. At the moment you can’t even get in the bank without queuing in the street to be let in one at a time. Of course, there is still only one teller working. Mrs S tried a few times and has found that every branch and bank has different rules. One won’t let you pay in after 11am. Another branch of the same bank will let you pay in anytime. One will only let you pay via the machine. But there is a way round this if you just want to give your money to the teller and done with. Let’s say you want to pay in €1,200 . They will say put it in machine. But if you pay in €1,201 they have to take the cash off you as the machine will not take coins. Job done. You don’t

have to stand on display outside where everyone knows what you are doing. Ryanair is at it again. My pal had several trips booked and had to cancel them all. He asked Ryanair for his money back. They said it could be done or they would give him vouchers which could be used at any time. He agreed to vouchers. Once they started taking bookings again he booked his son a flight to come over and tried to use one of the vouchers only to be told that he couldn’t because the voucher was not transferable. He tried to point out that he had the option to get his money back but took the option for vouchers at their request. They, of course, sprouted on about terms and conditions. So folks there is a lesson for you. If you get an option of a refund take it because then you can buy a ticket from any airline and not get tied up in gawd knows how many phone calls, emails and online chats trying to sort out a name change which, by the way, was only the first name as the surname is the same! I’ll let you know what happens. Thanks for all the emails. It’s nice to know you enjoy my weekly grumps.

So now, as we emerge into what we call the ‘new normal,’ life feels almost as before. Surely it’s time for the moaning to stop? One would hope. But of course, those who are finally able to have their hair tended to, now moan that they have to wear a face mask while doing so. Those who longed for pasta alla vongole, can’t stand the fact, that hand sanitiser must be used upon entering restaurants. And finally, to those who’ve whinged, moaned and cried, about the fact they may not be able to have their annual twoweek sojourn to the sun. Now that air travel has returned, albeit with restrictions, to the Corona-Moaners, it’s just not the same. And it’s simply not good enough. I look to the sky, and I plead to be spared from these dreadful people, for all eternity. However, as sure as night becomes day, I know my hopes are in vain. Instead, I continue to smile and be grateful, for all we have. And moreover, for the fact that my loved ones are healthy and safe. Keep smiling, keep going, and stay positive. As for the Corona-Moaners, I say, leave them to it. I for one, have far bigger fish to fry.

he was bullied by his drunken father, who was his first musical tutor and who beat him and locked him in the cellar every time he made a mistake. His beloved mother died a lingering death while several siblings did not survive infancy. From early childhood he suffered intestinal problems

and was dyslexic - unable to read or write properly. At 24 he developed a lung infection and then started hearing a buzzing noise in his ears. At 34 he had a fever for several months, abscesses in jaw and finger and a septic foot. For the rest of his life, his hearing suffered a gradual deterioration until he be-

came completely deaf by the time he was 46. If the onset of deafness to anybody is a terrible affliction, imagine the repercussions for a musician and composer. And in Beethoven’s case music went way beyond a means to earn a living or to make a name for himself. It was the very reason for his existence and he had so much he wanted to understand about humanity, the spirit and the universe. He wanted to share this with mankind and he sensed that he could communicate his discoveries in a way that transcended speech through his music. He became lonely and his love affairs were unhappy; he never married nor had children. But, despite this, he could transmit love and joy through music. Such was his refusal to be defeated that, in his last 10 years, totally deaf, he produced much of

the greatest music ever conceived. By this time, he had become deeply spiritual and produced the mass, Missa Solemnis. There followed two more of the greatest of their genres; the Opus 131 String Quartet and of course, the monumental Ninth symphony. At its premiere Beethoven, in the front row, was unable to hear the thunderous applause behind him. He was motioned to turn round to face the rapturous audience. His only opera, Fidelio, is believed, in many respects, to be the greatest of all operas, because the emotional depth of its story of triumph over adversity could only have been conceived and expressed by somebody who has faced and overcome so much suffering. The courage, resilience and ultimate glory of the man, Beethoven, is hugely uplifting.

Strong and stable on the lucrative lecture circuit worse, Blair managing to buy a multi-million pound property soon after leaving office? Clegg getting millions at Facebook? Or a Chancellor who became a newspaper editor (with no journalistic experience) in addition to numerous other jobs? Some leaders (a certain US president comes to mind) seem to think that their occupying the top job is akin to winning some sort of TV talent show, with the ‘winner’ cashing in on leaving. We’ve seen a number of unedifying examples of this, with the result that the integrity of the office is further diminished.

I was never a huge fan of Theresa May as PM, nor during her time as Home Secretary. However everything is relative. If asked, who would you rather be in charge of managing the current pandemic, I don’t doubt there are some who might even choose May over Johnson ... So, all things considered, I don’t have a problem with

this. She got the job, did the time and is entitled to capitalise on the experience. Howe v e r, I ’ d a l s o l i k e t o make the following recommendations. Firstly, you shouldn’t become an MP before the age of 30 so you build up some life experience. Secondly, whilst you are an MP, you shouldn’t have another job, consultancy, directorship or whatever to keep things open and transparent. After all, you’re paid

to be an MP, to work in the Commons and on behalf of your constituents, NOT yourselves. End of rant. Next, umm, ‘scandal,’ please! It’s not a death sentence! MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED FIRSTLY, I would like to thank all of the Euro Weekly readers for taking the time to read my column week after week – also for the letters you send in and encouraging comments on Facebook. A big shout out to Michel, Steven and red army at EWN head office for their support and hard work in helping and enabling me to get my story across and help others. I tend to write my columns replacing ‘me’ for ‘we’ - however this week I’m going to write about ME - give an honest insight to Ms Bipolar. These last two weeks I have struggled - yes, really struggled! I have used every bit of my energy and strength to carry on fighting this uphill battle. I have had my doctor on speed dial making tweaks here and there and giving me the professional support I very much needed. But I

have also looked after ME… I have laughed with family and friends, I have sunbathed, I have done silly T ikTok dance routines with my daughter, I have gone to bed early, made my bed every single mor ning and … ‘drum roll… please...’ not had any alcoholic beverages in three weeks!! These little achievements may seem unimportant to most people but to me, they are a reminder that I am still in control and I’m not losing myself to my illness. Just because one day, one week, or more of your life is rough, doesn’t mean things will be that way forever. I know the next couple of weeks will be tough but I also know that I am strong enough to come out of this the other side. I finally understand the gravity of my illness and when I need to ask for help. This disorder can be fatal if not managed properly I’m both a survivor and an advocate. I want to give hope to the millions of people whose lives have been affected by bipolar disorder. I’m living proof that a bipolar disorder diagnosis is not a death sentence. I haven’t just survived, I’ve thrived. And while I’ve had many professional and personal achievements, I’m most proud of my constant recovery. I am unapologetically ME! POSITIVE REALITY DEAR Euro Weekly News, Ok, I am ready for these tourists, bring them on. We can handle it. It will just be a little bit of a shock to the system as our streets and beaches have been quiet for so long. Hopefully, all it can bring is good news. As a business owner, my family are struggling. If we cannot bring any money in over the summer we will be out of here come winter. This will be a great shame as the kids are at school here and their friends are here, this is really our home now. However, I am realistic, I know it could all go down the sink. All we must do is keep pushing on, stay safe and we can all get through this. We are strong enough. Let’s have a successful summer!!! I don’t think I could handle it. Actually, I don’t think Spain could handle it. People would have to just work on through any virus now or there would be

OUR VIEW Habit forming ARE we now becoming a world controlled by fear. With every ending conversation, email or text punctuated by a STAY SAFE, are we perpetuating our own worries and also projecting them on others whilst creating a constant circle of being scared. Stay indoors, wear a mask, don’t pay in cash, work from home. The demands are growing and we are ensured that if we do what we are told we will have nothing to worry about. Why should it take the threat of a virus to kill rebellion? Why should laws be created on the spot by people who have never had the experience of solving these problems. With our fear and obedience an obsession has grown, the world is magnified, your every thought and action is magnified. If you breathe outside will you die? Does that person in the street have that KILLER virus? We are desperately painting ourselves into a corner with an endless pot of paint, it’s time to crack a window and breathe. So have we been brainwashed, figures don’t lie, do they? The government would never lie, would it? We are now waiting with baited breath (behind a sweaty mask) for our next order from on high. Let’s hope that it is a habit we can break. It takes 21 days to make a habit and 90 days to make it a permanent lifestyle change. We are now living a new lifestyle. Maybe our next order will be to take back our freedom, to think for ourselves... as long as we stay safe whilst doing it.

Masks mayhem Dear Euro Weekly News, I split my time between the coast where I have an apartment and an inland town where I work. In the hilltop town, absolutely everyone is respecting the restrictions, keeping their distance and using a mask pretty much all the time. Since the start of the pandemic, the town registered not one case of infection. I came down to the coast this morning and went for a coffee in San Pedro Alcántara. I was appalled at the number of people who were acting as if nothing had changed. Many, many people (mainly expats and/or tourists) were not wearing masks in a crowded street where it was impossible to keep any sort of safe distance. In the coffee house, people were entering and queuing without masks and were jostling together. The tables were not being cleared between customers never mind cleaned and disinfected. We did not endure three months of strict lockdown to have it all ruined by a casual disregard for others’ health. A complete lack of consideration and respect means there WILL be a second wave and those of us who have abided by the regulations and whose businesses face enormous problems will be the ones to suffer yet again while the uncaring tourists get to fly home. Heaven knows, we can use the eggs.’ As we ease out of Covid-19 lockdowns I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on how folk are dealing with situations no-one imagined they would ever have to contend with before the pandemic - and it’s been a fascinating exercise, especially with regard to the wearing of face

I liked what I saw, but not so much that I’d spend big bucks on one. On an online American medical supplies store I saw Swarovski masks being sold for $80. But you can pay way more than that. New York City streetwear giant, Supreme, is reportedly flogging some of the most sought-after face masks on the planet. Supreme originally began selling neoprene creations for just over $120, but demand has seen its designs fetching more than $500 on resale

sites. Casting my eyes around the empty streets of Benidorm, sadly depleted of holidaymakers, I noticed numerous stores - Chinese ones in particular - displaying eyecatching arrays of colour ful masks. But I take no comfort from the fact because, no matter how fabulous one’s mask may look, I feel suffocated when I’m in environments where they are mandatory and I begin suffering panic attacks. So, bus rides and visits to food outlets have kept to a minimum. And then there’s the issue of choosing the WRONG mask. In my case one featuring cannabis leaves. I dispensed with it immediately after I was approached on three occasions on a single after noon by separate groups of youngsters asking whether I had any dope to sell.

Ibrahimovic May Retire after AC Milan Victory THE 38-year-old striker hinted at retirement after AC Milan’s comeback win against Juventus on Tuesday July 7. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suggested he could retire at the end of the season, the Swedish forward spoke after Milan’s comeback win over Serie A leaders Juventus on Tuesday night and hinted that he would make an announcement soon. Ibrahimovic joined Milan in January as a free agent after his contract at LA Galaxy expired, and has been impressive since returning to Italy. He has found the net six times from 13 games across all competitions, with two of those coming in his last two league games.
