NO TO HOTEL A PETITION to put a stop to plans for a fourstar hotel in the Cabo de Gata natural park, one of the last remaining undeveloped areas of Spain’s Mediterranean coast and the jewel in Almeria’s natural crown, is gaining momentum. By the morning of Tuesday June 30 more than 110,000 people had put their name to the online campaign urging the Andalucia regional government to think again on its approval of the project in the park’s Genoveses Bay, less than a week after the petition was launched. The Junta de Andalucia gave the green light to plans to convert the socalled ‘Cortijo Las Chiqueras’ located about a kilometre back from the

The ruling says it is ‘compatible’ with the regulations governing the protected area, after having rejected the company’s original ideas in 2017.

But environmental groups like Ecologistas en Accion Almeria, Grupo Ecologista Mediterraneo, Salvemos Mojacar and Amigos del Parque, as well as the EQUO Spanish Green Party, argue the initiative does not fit with the preservation of the park. On Monday, representatives of the groups presented new arguments

against the project at the headquarters of the Junta’s Agriculture, Fishing and Sustainable Development Territorial Delegation in Almeria City. “However much the effort to make it sustainable and respectful of the environment, it will always have an impact,” the anti-hotel petition states. The petition also main-

tains that if the hotel does go ahead it will set a dangerous precedent. “If today we allow a ho-

tel with 30 rooms, tomorrow there will be another who wants to do the same with 50, and then another with 100, and in the end this such special area which already has too many visitors in summer will become even more crowded.” “The priority should be not allowing the park to become overcrowded and protecting the flora and fauna.” It ends, “Together we will preserve this paradise so it does not end up becoming a little Benidorm.”

Winner on brilliant form THE final of the Cabrera Lawn Bowls Club’s Bob Wright Singles competition saw winner Brian Willerton on brilliant form. Brian beat Colin (Deano) Jones, who like Brian played great bowls throughout the entire competition, 21-7 with five ends to spare. It was Colin’s third consecutive final, quite an achievement on its own and for which he deserved congratulations, the club pointed out, while describing Brian as a “worthy winner.” The Bob Wright Singles is a play by date competition, which got underway in November last year. The winners are the players who are the first to 21. It is an event for members who have

REPRESENTATIVES from the FAAM Almeria Federation of Associations for Disabled Persons have been in Adra to check the municipal beaches are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Beaches councillor Elisa Fernandez and Functional Diversity councillor Patricia Berenguel accompanied the FAAM delegation on their visit to the Censo, El Carboncillo, San Nicolas and Sirena Loca beaches. Among the specific measures they have been creating access points with walkways to make it easier to get to the seashore, setting up shaded areas and providing amphibious chairs and crutches. Fernandez also pointed out the

council has reinforced lifeguard and lifesaving services, which she said would benefit beach-goers who have reduced mobility. The FAAM visit was part of the collaboration agreement between the local authority and the federation, which includes providing the necessary infrastructure on beaches to improve accessibility and remove physical obstacles to this collective. This summer meanwhile the council has adapted its beach plan to the new reality of the coronavirus situation, like establishing entry and exit points for each beach to reduce physical contact between beach-goers to a minimum.

Andalucia has registered several important blazes in just the last 10 days, one fire in mountains just behind popular Costa Almeria holiday resort Mojacar burning its way through nearly more than 180 hectares in less than 24 hours. And as hot air from the Sahara pushes up temperatures this week, and weather forecasters predict another heatwave will start sweeping across much of the south and centre of the country by the weekend, already tinder dry conditions in much of the country mean wildfires are a real risk. Just the smallest spark at this time of year can set off a fire which in no time at all is blazing out of control. It could be a natural phenom-

enon like lightning which ignites undergrowth, but in many cases it is mankind’s actions which are the cause.

In the same way that society is doing its bit to prevent a risk of Covid-19 infections, so too can common sense and a feeling of responsibili-

ty towards others help reduce the likelihood of wildfires breaking out, and the potential threat to lives and property.

For example: • Avoid smoking in forests or countryside. •Don’t throw cigarette butts out a car window onto the roadside. • Don’t burn rubbish. • Don’t leave or toss flammable materials onto outside ground. • If you light a campfire make sure it is well away from trees, grass and leaves and prevent sparks from flying out and triggering a fire. •When putting out a campfire make sure it is totally extinguished and cover the area around the fire with earth or stones. • Don’t leave any rubbish lying around in the countryside. • Don’t let off fireworks or firecrackers near areas which could catch light. • Don’t have outdoor barbecues in in the countryside.

ALMERIA Council has spoken out for LGBTI rights at an act which saw the unfurling of a giant rainbow coloured flag in the city centre. Staged in front of the School of Arts on Saturday to mark Sunday’s International LGBTI Pride Day, the event included a reading out of a manifesto. City Promotion councillor Carlos Sanchez called on all institutions to work together to gain more rights for the LGBTI community and to prevent situations of violence and inequality. LGBTI Pride Day should be “increasingly more fiesta and less demands,” the

councillor said. Sanchez explained the Covid-19 pandemic had prevented what would have been the third year of an extensive programme of events and a multi-colour parade through the provincial capital’s streets from going ahead, but said that did not make “raising the voice for the rights of the LGTBI community and celebrating diversity less important.” Saturday’s act had the support of the Almeria provincial council, the Junta de Andalucia and several different organisations.

Sevilla flights relaunch THE Almeria-Sevilla flight is relaunched on July 1 with connections four days a week. The return of the service follows an agreement between the Junta de Andalucia’s Development, Infrastructure and Land Planning department and the airline Air Nostrum. There are seven return flights a week altogether: two a day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and one on Sundays. In August this will be reduced to four return flights every week, one on each

day. There will be a revision of the flight frequencies in September according to demand. Before the State of Alarm resulted in the suspension of the connection between the two cities on March 16 there were 11 flights a week. The Sevilla-Almeria route was declared a Public Service in 2009 and started operating in January of the following year. The service sets back the Andalucia regional government more than €2 million a year.

TWO of the Costa Almeria Anglican churches are set to reopen their doors to worshippers on July 5 having closed under the coronavirus crisis lockdown. He described the mayor’s written answer as “vague.” “There are no concrete plans,” he told EWN, clearly exasperated. “The meeting ended without any concrete proposals. Most participants were therefore rightly disillusioned because there is no solution for the foreseeable future.”

TEMPERATURES are expected to start dipping in Almeria on Thursday after hot air sweeping in from the Sahara this week has pushed up the thermometers in the Levante and Almanzora areas of the province. The Almanzora and Levante are forecast to escape the worst of a new heatwave which will hit much of southern and central Spain from Sunday onwards.

The Andalucia Infoca wildfire prevention service reported that 49 forest officers split into seven groups, with four fire engines fighting the flames from the ground. The effort to put out the fire from the air involved eight helicopters and six planes, two of them amphibian aircraft. Fortunately, Infoca said, the wind was blowing the smoke away from properties. No mobile EXPAT residents in Limaria in Arboleas claim a lack of mobile phone coverage in their area could put lives at risk. “We are about 200 permanent residents, most of whom are eldery people, who need a reliable telephone connection,” JeanClaude Pinoy told the Euro Weekly News. He cited a recent incident as “proof” not having coverage can be “life-threatening.” An elderly man fell while out walking. When after 45 minutes a passer-by noticed him they were unable to connect to the 112 emergency services number. Jean-Claude explained several years ago residents filed a petition with the council to address the mobile coverage issue “without consequence,” and recently sent a registered letter to the administration. On June 12 a group of around 30 residents met with the Arboleas mayor to discuss the issue. The mayor told the expats they have the coun-

season. On Sunday June 21 a fire broke out in the Sierra Cabrera near the Mojacar coast, burning through more than 180 hectares of mountains, mainly in Turre. Just a few days later there was a wildfire in the Serrata area of Nijar. Firefighters had it under control within four hours.

Hot pursuit A BERJA teenager is under arrest on gender violence charges for physically attacking his underage girlfriend. Guardia Civil, working in collaboration with Berja Local Police, went looking for 18-year-old AA after the girl appeared at the police station with several injuries to report the assault. Officers spotted the young man prowling around the area. He made a run for it, with officers in hot pursuit. They eventually caught up with the teenage and detained him.

Standing up for gender diversity CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA has taken a stand for gender diversity in events to mark International LGBTI Pride Day on June 28. Cuevas Social Well-being and Equality councillor Melchora Caparros, accompanied by mayor Antonio Fernandez Liria and the rest of the councillors and town hall staff read out a commemorative manifesto in front of the building on Monday morning in an expression of the local authority’s support for the freedom and sexual diversity of all

people. The awareness-raising acts began with the release of multi-coloured biodegradable balloons, which the council said was a symbol designed to “give visibility” to the LGBTI community. Also on Monday June 29 in the morning, a rainbow coloured flag was unfurled from the town hall balcony. New this year among the initiatives to mark the day has been the creation of the ‘Wall of Equality and Diversity’ near the municipal multi-purpose warehouse.

HUERCAL-OVERA castle reopened its doors to the public on Wednesday July 1 with Covid-19 contagion protection measures in place. The council said the monument is open to small groups of visitors from Monday to Thursday between 7.30pm and 9.30pm, with obligatory social distancing and hygiene precautions. “We are opening the doors to our

Signalling soon A NEW lighthouse in Mojacar Playa could be sending out signals to ships sailing along the province’s Levante coast by early next year. Almeria Port Authority (APA) President Jesus Caicedo has told Mojacar mayor Rosa Maria Cano the intention is to start construction of the lighthouse on Marina de la Torre’s Moro Manco hill in the autumn and for it to be operational within the first few months of 2021. First for safety distinction

ESSENTIAL: Costa Almeria coastal destinations have to present an image of safety, hygiene and quality services, the Andalucia Tourism delegate stressed. ADRA’S beaches have become the first in Almeria to gain the regional government’s ‘Andalucia Segura’ distinction for compliance with health authority Covid19 safety regulations and requirements. The safety recognition goes to the town’s El Carboncillo, El Censo, San Nicolas and Sirena Loca beaches, all of which have also earned Blue Flags for quality once again. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes said he was delighted “because it is the fruit of the efforts we have made to care for and protect our beaches. “They are in the best condition, for both Adra residents and those who visit us,” he added. The mayor pointed out that having the Andalucia Segura stamp serves as a tourist

attraction and a benefit to the image of the municipality, “demonstrating that Adra is a town which offers guarantees, and for that we are grateful.” The Junta de Andalucia Tourism delegate in Almeria Jose Luis Delgado described the distinction “as proof of the excellence of our coast,” pointing out that in current times it is “essential to present an image of safety, hygiene and quality services on the Almeria coast.” The recognition certifies that Adra complies with safety regulations and requirements established by the World Health Organisation and the Junta de Andalucia’s Health department. Also, that recommendations and protocols stipulated by health authorities are being followed on all four of the beaches.

Village investment SERVICES and infrastructure in four Almanzora municipalities are benefiting from a more than €500,000 investment. The cash allocation for modernisations and improvements in Albanchez, Cobdar, Lijar and Oria is managed by the Almeria provincial council under the PFEA Rural Employment Development Plan, and is also creating 5,000 working days in the four localities. The most extensive works are being carried out in Oria. They include upgrades to the Social Hall, putting down paving on a number of roads, smartening up the Ogarite public laundry and environmental maintenance. Among the projects in Lijar are park and garden maintenance and works on the Filabres-Llano Jaraiz Rural Public

School. Weeding, pruning and clearing green zones are one of the main focuses of attention in Cobdar. There will also be painting works in areas like the municipal swimming pool and the Plaza de la Cruz, while new fencing will go up in the recreation area. Various works will be carried out in Albanchez, among them the instalment of a wooden railing on the Pilar hill and a series of improvement to the Calle Real outdoor exercise area. Diputacion de Almeria PFEA deputy Matilde Diaz paid a recent visit to the four localities to see how the works were coming along. The deputy described the PFEA as “one of the most powerful tools the Diputacion has to create employment in the smallest municipalities.”

Keep an Eye out VERA Council has created a special public safety group to keep an eye out for anti-social behaviour on the town’s streets. Part of the Local Police force, the GIV Vera Intervention Group is focusing particularly on the most crowded areas, events and nightlife ‘hotspots,’ in the hope that the police presence will deter any delinquents. The group is made up

of five experienced officers, one official, and has the support of a canine support unit for their work in preventing the consumption of drugs in public areas, checking people and vehicles and patrolling at large public events. The team members have their own distinctive black uniform and beret, and are equipped with anti-disturbance materials and cameras.

They also have their own van kitted out with basic public safety equipment. They patrol as a group rather than in pairs like the other police units. Vera Public Safety councillor Alfonso Garcia explained this is the first specialised group of its kind in the region, and said it would contribute to reinforcing safety in both Vera town and on the coast, and at municipal mass events.

HISTORIC documentation relating to the origin of the construction of Adra’s landmark ‘Puente del Rio’ bridge now form part of the municipal archives. Local resident Maria Jose Mullor decided to donate the ledgers from the years 1934 to 1954 to Adra Council after finding them abandoned. Last week the council members formally accepted the donation with

the inventory of municipal property, give an insight into the development of Adra over the last century, the council said. The local authority also expressed the hope that before too long the ledgers will be put on show to the public when the Covid-19 pandemic situation allows.

SUPPORT: The council unanimously backed the new rule. A 38-YEAR-OLD from El Ejido is under arrest for a beating which left the victim in hospital for more than a week. It was the victim who reported the violent incident to the Guardia Civil. They said they had been set upon by one or two individuals in the neighbourhood where they live. The investigations confirmed the victim was treated for serious injuries in the Poniente hospital for eight days. As to the motive for the beating, the Guardia established there was no previous relationship between

the victim and the detainee, but that the suspect and his brother, who both live in the area, were known to be violent and troublemakers.

The Guardia said their investigation remains open and that further arrests for taking part in the assault were possible.

ADRA Council has told dog owners they must clean up their pooches’ pee. The local authority has made it obligatory for dog owners to use a sanitiser bottle to dilute their dogs’ urine if they piddle in the street. Hence owners taking their pets out for walkies now have to go equipped not only with a bag to pick up doggie doo, but also with what the council specifies should be “a bot-

tle of water mixed with vinegar or any non-soapy sanitising products, which is neither corrosive or toxic.” The rule comes under a modification to the Adra by-law on Animal Ownership and Protection, and got the administration’s unanimous backing. Animal Protection councillor Elisa Fernandez explained the measure had been agreed with animal protection organisations, “hence it takes into ac-

count their considerations and concerns.” The council said it will be running an awareness-raising campaign via social media, signs, public information radio ads, and through giving out materials. “Public health and hygiene is always priority for the council and this measure also means a considerable improvement for the image of our town,” affirmed Adra mayor Manuel Cortes.

Photography for a worthy cause IMAGES captured by local photographers will create an artistic route around the streets of Carboneras this summer and raise money for a worthy cause at the same time. Organised by the Carboneras Photography Group in collaboration with the council, the Foto Carboneras 2020 initiative is aimed at raising money for the local branch of the Caritas charity. Some 20 photographers are donating works to go on show. The idea is that local businesses pay €30 to acquire and exhibit the photos, preferably outside. Anyone who then takes a shine to a work is able to get a laminat-

ed copy for €50. Every cent raised will go to Carboneras Caritas. Culture and Social Policy councillor Vanesa Fuentes highlighted the value of a project she said gave both Carboneras residents and visitors to the area an opportunity to “enjoy culture on the street through incredible images which reflect our natural and cultural heritage from an artistic perspective.” Fuentes pointed out the initiative was also a way of supporting local traders and small businesses, while coming together to contribute to a good cause at a time when it was more necessary than ever due to the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Back to ‘normal’ HUERCAL-OVERA’S municipal Adolfo Suarez is back to ‘normal,’ with everything, including children’s playgrounds and outdoor fitness areas, open. But due to the coronavirus pandemic the council has implemented some changes. The local authority has established the pertinent protocol and is implementing the relevant health and safety measures. These include disinfections of facilities and the reduction of maximum user numbers to one person for every four metres. The Huercal-Overa councillors for Public Works and Sustainable development, for Services and Infrastructure, and for Urban Planning and Environment, Blas Sanchez, David Siles and Francisco Jose Lopez, paid a visit to the park this week to check the implemented measures are functioning as they are supposed to. David Siles pointed out that while a minimum of one disinfection daily is necessary to open the Adolfo Suarez’s facilities, the council is carrying out

The local authority is now working on disinfecting and organising the rest of HuercalOvera’s parks and children’s play areas so they can also be reopened.

Trapped and killed A LANDSLIDE trapped and killed a labourer working on laying pipes in Velez-Blanco on Friday, the Andalucia regional government’s 112 emergency service reported. The call came through in the early evening that a worker was trapped in a ditch on the Balsa de Lara lane. Guardia Civil, the Levante firefighting service, Local Police and Velez-Blanco Civil Protection rushed to the scene, while an EPES health emergencies team flew in by helicopter. Sadly, the emergencies team could only confirm the death of the 51-year-old. Firefighters rescued the body from the ditch.

Summer pool opening THE Huercal-Overa summer swimming pool is reopening to the public on Friday July 3, with strict rules on hygiene and social distancing. The health of people using the pool and of staff is the top priority, the local authority stressed. “Hence we have established the necessary protocols for disinfection, hygiene and health adaptions and distancing measures,” explained Sports and Health councillor Blas Sanchez, who visited the pool last week with Culture councillor Belen Martinez to finalise details on the reopening of the centre with municipal technicians. “We are continuing with the opening of dif-

ferent municipal facilities, returning little by little to normality with the resumption of sports activities and leisure opportunities for residents” the Sports councillor added. Illegal rave stopped GUARDIA CIVIL frustrated plans to stage an illegal rave in Pechina at what had been a set for Hollywood movie Exodus and the phenomenally successful TV series Game of Thrones. Guardia launched an investigation on the back of information from members of the public that a dance party was being organised in the area. Officers set up a surveillance operation and stopped a vehicle with three people inside heading for the spot. This Bishop, Juan Antonio Reig Pla, is well- known for his strict ‘morality’ and aversion to both homosexuality and sex outside marriage. In a controversial Good Friday Mass, the Bishop of Alcala even proclaimed that homosexuals “will find themselves in hell.” The bishop is renowned for his scandalous comments and remarks about the enemies which include contraceptives, lust, abortion, sex out of wedlock and homosexuals. Now, social media users on Twitter have decided to call him out for his abusive comments and some even go to say that “the Bishop of Alcala de Henares was born in the wrong millennium.” Another user @Im_Just_Based argued that these comments make the world very grateful to know that the Catholic Church barely has any power left. He also notes that if they did have any power, he is sure that they would enforce dress codes just like a jihadist would.

Subhuman conditions A GANG of criminals in Madrid have been arrested for charging migrants, including families with children, around €250 to live in a storage unit. The operation revealed the subhuman conditions which these 61 migrants were subjected to live in. For €250 a month, the migrants were renting out small storage unit rooms without any ventilation and with a shared kitchen.

The six individuals responsible for this crime against public health have been arrested for coercion and promotion of illegal immigration. The area was littered with cockroaches, bedbugs and rats. There was only one bathroom per 10 rooms (each room containing multiple people) and only two kitchens which were used in strict shifts. Most of the units were about nine squared metres and shared by three or four people who were coerced into paying €250 without any legal certainties such as a lease. Some of the larger units were partitioned with cardboard and plastic boards in order to make the space as profitable as possible.

Invaded by squatters A GROUP of squatters has taken over a nurse’s home in Barcelona after she was out working a long shift during the coronavirus health crisis. The victim of this latest squatter debacle is Pilar, a 62-year-old nurse, who like all health professionals, has been forced to work extremely long shifts during the health crisis. During one of her shifts, she returned to her home only to find that it had been invaded by squatters whilst she was out saving lives. In a heartfelt

Careless owner THE owner of a small Yorkshire terrier has been reported for animal abuse after she left her puppy locked in the car for over four hours in 40-degree weather. The vehicle was parked in direct sunlight with no ventilation whatsoever. According to the Emergency Services, a neighbour in an area of Sevilla alerted authorities about the presence of a small dog locked inside a vehicle. Local Police proceeded to break a window of the car in order to rescue the little Yorkshire terrier who was in a dire state. Officers estimate that although it was 40 degrees outside, inside the car it was at least 50 degrees Celsius. The owner, a 49year-old woman, was identified and sanctioned for her mistreatment of the animal.

The Guardia Civil officer, Christian Rios, has assured in various social networks that, after the dramatic episode in Leganes, he and little Izan “are now friends forever.” Rios was enjoying free time with friends in a park when he heard cries for help after Izan had reportedly lost consciousness, according to the Guardia Civil. gone into cardiorespiratory arrest, so the quick-thinking officer immediately gave Izan a heart massage until he began to recover, while waiting for the emergency services. Sources from the Armed Institute said that, according to the medical assistance, the baby’s condition could have been due to an episode of “sudden infant death,” as the little boy was not suffering from any other condition and was in perfect health.

The family of Tom Petty, who died in 2017, warned President Trump not to use I Won’t Back Down at the Tulsa rally. During this time, we’ve seen GBP/EUR slump from 1.11 to 1.09 and EUR/GBP climb to 0.91. Meanwhile, GBP/USD has plunged from 1.25 to 1.22, whilst EUR/USD has traded between $1.11 and $1.13. What’s been happening? Fresh coronavirus outbreaks in countries like China and Germany, as well as a startling spike in cases in the US, has rocked currency markets through the second half of June, amid fears of a second wave of infections.

Second wave fears drive volatility in currency markets

VOLATILE: Amidst growing concerns of a coronavirus resurgence. This has been particularly damag­ ing for the pound. The currency has had to content with Brexit concerns and the Bank of England’s announce­ ment of more stimulus while growing increasingly sensitive to market senti­ ment. Despite the rise in coronavirus cas­ es setting back plans to reopen the US

economy, the US dollar has actually strengthened over the last two weeks as second wave fears have kept the safe­haven currency in strong de­ mand. Meanwhile, the euro has fluctuat­ ed in recent weeks, with Europe’s sol­ id progress towards eradicating the coronavirus being offset by the EU’s

failure to reach an agreement on a re­ covery fund as well as the threat of a transatlantic trade war. What do you need to look out for? Looking ahead, it’s likely the pound will remain on the back foot going for­ ward so long as Brexit progress re­ mains limited and the UK’s coron­ avirus figures remain elevated. Only a few weeks ago PM Boris Johnson had expressed confidence that a deal could be reached by the end of July, but that optimism isn’t shared by many. If the number of UK coronavirus in­ fections continue spiking in specific regions, the prospect of lockdown re­ strictions being reintroduced could weigh on GBP exchange rates. For EUR investors the focus at the start of July will be whether EU lead­ ers are able to agree on the terms of the coronavirus relief fund, with fur­

ther delays likely to undermine the single currency. The next ECB gathering will also be of interest, as will growth and output figures for the Eurozone’s largest economies. Finally, with coronavirus concerns continuing to weigh on market senti­ ment it’s likely we will see the US dol­ lar remain well supported over the coming weeks, although any gains could be tempered as political risks begin to grow. A very serious situation

IT strikes me that most of the the illegal street parties that are being held across the UK’s cities are not being staged as any celebration or gathering of people in pursuit of innocent fun. They are far more sinister than that. These are, particularly in London, mobs of young, predominately black lawbreakers, cocking an arrogant snook at authorities and intentionally flouting the rules to antagonise and provoke the police into more violent confrontation. It will therefore come as no surprise to me to subsequently hear the usual accusations levelled against the police of using ‘unnecessary force’ or the ‘heavy handedness’ we have come to expect. At the time of writing, 120 police have already been injured at these ‘gatherings.’ I can only assume that as yet no ‘innocent party-goers’ have been hurt or you can be rest assured the outcry would have been heard across the nation. This is of course exactly what these shadowy ‘party’ organisers want. They want these events to be the catalyst for the continuation and escalation of their war against the authorities and an excuse to ultimately disrupt and tear asun-

der the very fabric of the UK’s society. This is a very serious situation indeed. If the authorities don’t stop pussy footing around and appeasing those who condone and encourage this revolutionary racial violence, the streets of Britain’s great cities will begin to resemble the Beirut I warned about 30 years ago - and we will also witness the holocaust that a certain politician, far more intelligent and visionary than I prophesised even more years before that!

Talk about dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. The British government is set up like ducks in a fairground shooting gallery, and don’t the lefty media love having a ‘pop.’ It’s really very simple; let the government make a decision and then oppose it! ‘The government wants to set up three-metre distancing.’ Media. ‘We think this is overreacting.’ ‘The government has reduced distancing to one metre.’ Media. ‘This is dangerous and irresponsible.’ ‘The gov-

ernment is imposing total lockdown.’ Media. This is overkill and unnecessary.’ ‘The government wants to reopen some services and ease the lockdown.’ Media. ‘It’s too soon.’ Etc. etc. If you get my drift! The next move is to make sure their main interviewees are opposed to whatever subject they wish to demean, which gives the impression that the majority of the ‘experts’ disagree with the government policies. This results in the viewer beginning to think that the opinions and anti-government rhetoric being constantly aired must be supported by the majority. Although they may disagree, they then begin to doubt their own political beliefs. This is known as brain washing, pure and simple. Well, much to the main Media’s arrogant surprise, these methods didn’t work during the last elections. If they continue to underestimate the public intelligence in their efforts to undermine this government and rebuild their precious Labour party - they won’t work this time either. La Madrague GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS Brigitte Bardot, or perhaps Elvis, said - we’re caught in a trap. At least, I seem to be. And i t ’s a t r a p I f i n d h a rd e r t o e s c a p e w i t h e a c h p a s s i n g d a y. Now that we’re free, and life is there for the taking, it appears that I prefer to stay home. As soon as the gates of life reopened, I was full of enthusiasm. Eager to visit many of my favourite haunts, I soon realised, I longed to be in my garden. Suddenly traffic feels heavy, streets busy, and beaches, well, let’s say, I watch from h o m e . W h y b e s u r ro u n d e d b y people, when I could be poolside with my dog, and a Whipering Angel? Post, for the last few months, has been pretty nondescript. In fact, it’s been a drag. Where once, fun invitations, were my breakfast reading. I mean, who needs to w a t c h d o o m a n d g l o o m o n T V, when you can have, ‘see you soon’ on an invitation. H o w e v e r, s a d l y I ’ d b e c o m e used to, little other than bills, upon bills. Then, as if a ray of glory from days past. This week, the postman arrived with envelopes, too refined, to deliver an electricity bill. All at once, it seems as if everyone wants to host a party. Everything, from stylish days sailing, to charity galas, and all in between. Marbella, and the world, is alive, and ready to party. After months of shorts and trainers, now life requires a dress code. It requires numerous dress codes, worse luck. Too many to consider. I stare at my recently, unpacked, and arranged wardrobe, and I despair. I want to stay in my shorts and Nikes. These days if it requires more than this, I probably won’t b o t h e r. T h e o n l y a d d i t i o n o f change I do make, from time to time, being, Gucci loafers. That’s as far as I’ll go. And, that’s for lunch, ‘proper.’ Things have come to a pretty pass, when I close the wardrobe doors, and RSVP no to parties, that sound, glittering. However, the new me, is in fact, the old me.

GARDENING: I now much prefer the slower pace of life. Before a life of endless social whirl, I was once a very relaxed person. One, who preferred to spend time alone. One, who preferred the beach, to flash bulbs. Having been dislocated from the world, I somehow feel, I now want to remain on the periphery. I want to hold on to the slower pace version of existence, that I’ve lived for the first half of the year. I rise earlier and earlier, as summer unfolds. The birds now waking me at times, that I used to fall home. During lockdown, I found myself doing things, very much out of my norm. I guess, anything was better than sitting around all day, watching endless news reports about the dreaded virus. One task I enjoyed, was taking care of the garden. And as life moves on, I wake very early and I’m in the garden, lost in silence. So lost, that most days our gardener arrives and asks me what I’m doing. While dancing takes place on the terrace almost every night. By midnight, I watch life unfold on Instagram, and I say, let them dance. Let them sleep late. But, I must be up with the lark, or whatever bird it is that wakes me at 04.40.

Just cos you can, you don’t have to MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man OUT for my walk the other day I noticed a restaurant proudly advertising that they specialise in Mexican, Indian and Italian food. I decided this is not a place I would go to eat any of their three specialities. My reasoning is that if I wanted to eat an Indian meal wouldn’t I be better to go to an Indian restaurant that only specialised in Indian food? I would love to know if anyone has been to one of these places and if so what was it like? This pandemic is going to sort out the men from the boys. The few eateries that I have been to have all made noticeable changes - trimmed down menus and more space. I love it. Nothing worse than being so close to the person next to you that you want to join in their conversation. I still insist I get my table with the wobbly leg of course but no more tables in the naughty corner or the loo. The biggest bonus is they are actually pleased to see you and the service is brilliant. Of course they are real-

ising now they need local customers as well as tourists. Saw a talk show the other night and the host was saying that the young should go out and do their thing. Be careful but basically get back to normal as it’s their time. We old have had our time and more or less nature should take its course with us. Meanwhile he’s doing his show in the comfort of his Beverly Hills mansion. If he feels so strongly why doesn’t he insist that he goes back to doing his show live in the studio with an audience who are happy to mingle? Or maybe he won’t because the network would be terrified of the consequences. I also saw someone on the UK news saying it was too soon to open the pubs and a few other places as they wouldn’t feel safe. I’m screaming at the TV - JUST ‘COS YOU CAN, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO! The government can open up what they like. If you aren’t comfortable don’t go. If you are then go. Simple really. Finally I was really impressed watching 6,000 Americans cheering the POTUS drink a glass of water with one hand and then throwing the glass on the floor. What all world leaders should strive to emulate!

The Mind Of A Troll

DIONE LOCKYER TROLL - In internet slang, a troll is a person who starts flame wars or upsets people on the internet by posting inflammatory and digressive, extraneous, or off topic messages with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses. Trolling is becoming more and more common these days, but why do people actually troll and what do they gain from it? ATTENTION!! It doesn’t matter whether it is negative or positive, people who troll sites are so desperate for attention that they will go to any length to achieve it. They may suffer from a lack of confidence or other negative mindset issues yet are too scared to face them. Many people do not like to admit to their flaws, they see it as a weakness. To change your mindset

takes work and commitment, for some that is too hard therefore, the easier option is to point the finger at others in judgement. When pointing the finger and seeing a weakness in others it relieves you from dealing with your own issues. Sometimes it even makes you feel better about yourself and your situation, but this feeling is very short lived. Before you know it, you are back to looking at yourself in disappointment and the only way out is to... 1) Take action and address your own issues or 2) Continue to judge others and troll As a successful public figure and newspaper columnist, I am open wide to trolls yet I am rarely affected by them. Yes, I receive the odd nasty email or comment but it doesn’t last for long. Why?

I STARVE THEM FROM OXYGEN!! Their oxygen is the attention they crave. Trolls love nothing more than a reaction. They thrive on an argument and almost get excited when they are aware they have created hurt or anger towards others. Take my column last week as a per fect example. I purposely gave it a controversial title because I wanted to see who actually reads a whole column as opposed to those who form an opinion purely

over the title. I received an email from a reader advising me how disgusting I was about fat shaming. She continued her email by actually fat shaming me. This person hadn’t even read the column. If she had, she would have known I was actually doing the complete opposite. She had no intention of reading it, she wanted to troll me. I starved her of her oxygen by not giving her the attention she thought she would receive. What I did do

was show empathy, whilst giving facts and was clear that there would be no further communication. However, if she ever wanted to change her mindset I would be more than happy to help her. She replied with further abuse because she wanted a reaction from me. She didn¡t get it, so she soon gave up! Today’s technology gives trolls a platform. They can hide behind a keyboard, with a fake profile and minimal chance of being caught. It is easy to allow them to get to you. It is easy to respond in anger and frustration. But remember, that is EXACTLY what they want. If you want trolls to become history, a thing of the past, starve them from their oxygen. Either kill them with kindness or even better, don’t react at all. Once their oxygen is removed, they can no longer breathe and will have to give up.

If we all do our part, little by little the economy will recover on the basis of safe and responsible tourism and with the appropriate business strategies for future projections that will make us reinvent ourselves as tourism that offers in addition to the sun and the beach, the quality of life that we en-

joy in the south, in a responsible way adhering to the new conditions. We must change the mindset and be aware that the coronavirus has come to stay for a time, until an effective vaccine is found, so in the meantime, responsibly applying hygiene and social distancing mea-

sures. If we achieve that, for residents and tourists, we will continue to be one of the best places where we can spend our holidays, or living here in Spain because it is a privilege to enjoy our mild and bright winters or the summer holidays where freedom replaces the clock that marks the schedules. If all together we can make it possible we will continue enjoying our paradise, simply by wearing a mask, washing your hands and maintaining the social distance of 1.5 metres, never before in the history of humanity, has such a serious problem had such an affordable solution. DEAR Euro Weekly, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made an excellent job with the coronavirus outbreak but he certainly has not thoroughly thought through the idea of scrapping 10-year-old cars. It may be a good idea for cities and large towns with their higher income and excellent bus service for those unable to replace their vehicle, but that is not the case for everyone nationwide. Has he taken into account the fact that a lot of people in villages and satellite urbanisations do not have that kind of service and are still recovering financially, being on lower incomes, from last September storms. IN the street you can trust yourself to wear a mask, cross the road, go back indoors if people refuse to follow social distancing measures, but what do you do if you are stuck in a 130ft long metal tube going at 575 mph through the sky? There’s nowhere to run. As the first passengers step off flights both in the UK and in Spain there seem to be different sides of the story. One gentleman spoke of no checks on the UK side and a free for all on board the plane where passengers were not allowed to space out and chose to remove masks when they settled in. Another traveller tells of flying into Stansted on a flight where passengers were spaced out, wearing masks and temperature checked upon arrival. Both were with the same low-cost airline…Ryanair. With many people who have been stuck in Spain waiting to see their family for the first time in months and sun worshippers with sights set on the coastal beaches, we would hope EVERY single flight would follow a strict protocol to ensure the safety in both countries and the stop of any spread of infection. So, what is the excuse? Laziness? Or maybe lack of training for staff? If you board a flight and passengers are not following measures you know are strictly important who can you turn to? The passengers themselves may not listen to reason (people don’t often take kindly to being told what to do), the air staff would hopefully be the main choice and keeping an eye on this as a priority or will we see frustrated captains turning back? For your own peace of mind always remember to look after number one, flights are never really the healthiest of places anyway so, keep your mask on, wear gloves, use hand sanitiser and try as best you can to keep your distance. Wash those travelling clothes as soon as you can. But remember it still continues when you hit the ground, for now, let’s all stay safe.

De-stress your skin STRESS is the leading factor of disease within our bodies and our skin is our largest organ, therefore it’s paramount to keep damage at bay during anxiety-ridden times.

Stress can play havoc with your hormones. Cortisol is released in response to stress and is the enemy of collagen. It attacks the connective tissue that keeps your face firm.

Anxiety can also cause us to make certain facial expressions, such as frowning which can leave wrinkling on the forehead and eyes. Be aware of holding facial expressions when stressed. Breathe in deeply, and as you exhale, imagine your face becoming relaxed and smooth. Meditation is also helpful, even if you have just a few moments. Lack of hydration is typically a wrinkle culprit, so make sure you consume at least eight glasses of pure water each day to prevent dry skin and to eliminate toxins. Lack of beauty sleep can cause fluid to gather under your lower eyelid resulting in droopy bags. Also. Those who sleep face down can expect puffiness due to gravity. At least eight hours of sleep is a must. Shut off any electronic devices an hour before you go to sleep.

treatment for some symptoms of mental health conditions. Or they can refer your relative to a psychiatrist. They might not want to visit their GP. They may not think they are unwell, not realise a GP can help, understand they need help but feel too embarrassed or frightened to talk to a doctor. Speaking to a professional and opening up about how you are feeling can be quite a scary situation. There are some things you could tell the person you’re worried about. • You can go with them to a doctor’s appointment to support them if they don’t want to go alone. • Many mental health problems can be treated. They might be worried they will have to go to hospital. • GP notes are confidential. This means the doctor can’t share information with anyone else unless they agree to it. The GP may have to share information with others if they feel someone is at risk of harmi n g t h e m selves. Y o u , yourself, may worry that you aren’t doing enough to help them but believe me, offering emotional support is really valuable. Listen to them, offer them reassurance, stay calm, be patient, do not make assumptions. Write to me your thoughts or any tips you may have experienced when helping someone through difficult times. WHEN I was a kid I was enthralled by the adventures o f B re r R a b b i t a n d B re r Bear and the Disney movie ‘Song of the South.’ The film has not been shown again in cinemas or on television for decades because it is believed that it has racist connotations. The lead figure in the movie is an old, black, bearded plantation labourer called Uncle Remus who relates his stories of magical animals to a young boy called Jonny who was about to run away from his grandmother’s plantation. I struggle to find anything that is racist about this delightful movie. All of the Brer Rabbit stories take place after 1848 when slavery was abolished. The Uncle Remus character merely works on the plantation and is free to leave at any time he wishes. Many years later Disney theme parks have a ride

have decided to revamp the ride completely and theme it on their popular movie, ‘The Princess and the Frog.’ I can't for the life of me understand

why they would want to waste their money doing this. There is nothing wrong with the theme of the ride the way it is. This is yet another way of

trying to wipe history away. In July 2017, after being inaugurated as a Disney Legend, the Whoopi Goldberg expressed a desire for Song of the South to be re-released publicly to American audiences. Surely they should listen to this amazingly talented black actress. The movie ‘Song of the South’ has also been placed as the 67th greatest animated film of all time by the online film critics society. I know that I’m not the only one who is getting sick and tired of all this pseudo-racism. The do-gooders are having the time of their lives. They are so busy running around and censoring the past that they aren’t looking to the future. Surely it is time to deal with real racism. It’s time to make sure that people are treated equally regardless of their colour, race, religion or sexual orientation. It’s time to stop all this nonsense and get on with the real problems of racism in our society.

Is there life beyond lockdown?

IT’S no secret that lockdown has affected people in different ways. There a re t h o s e w h o h a v e d e spised every second. Those who couldn’t wait to go shopping in crowde d p l a c e s l i k e B i c e s t e r, get on a plane, see friends in large groups. Then, there are others who are just a different personality type. Those who enjoy meeting up with friends, but either singly or in small groups. They couldn’t imagine anything worse than visiting Bicester! It’s interesting that when lockdown and its ‘success’ is discussed, people mention Norway where the geography and weather make partial lockdown almost a way of life. Norwegians themselves say: “What lockdown? This is normal.” Now look at the World

Their income depends on services to all of us - otherwise they face the prospect of an extremely lean summer. FORMER neighbour Gertrude - well into her eighties and with a voice like a wood shredder due to a lifetime of heavy smoking - stunned me a few years back by asking ‘Where can I buy cigs that won’t damage my health?’ She’d just been out to buy 40 Marlboros and was horrified to notice that her favourite brand now bore grisley health warnings. She’d slung them back at the assistant, saying she didn’t want cigarettes that were dangerous, and could she please have the old ones that were safe. I explained to Gertrude that cigarettes had always posed a health threat, but it was only in 2008 that the UK government insisted that graphic warnings be put on

HEALTH HAZARD: Medicated cigarettes used to be endorsed. the packets. ‘Bullpucky,’ she wheezed. Then, after a lengthy coughing fit, added ‘I can remember the days when doctors recommended smoking, and even prescribed them for asthma sufferers.’

While I did recall seeing vintage ads depicting doctors and dentists endorsing various brands I thought Gertrude’s fags-for-asthmatics claim was pure fantasy. Boy, was I ever wrong! I fact-checked her claim

and found an article in the US National Library of Medicine that infor med me that ‘throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the inhalation of fumes from burning preparations of stramonium, lobelia, tobacco, and potash became increasingly popular amongst asthmatics and their physicians throughout the world.’ One renowned asthma sufferer was French novelist Marcel Proust, who, after trying a variety of cures and even changing his diet, could get no relief - until he began smoking asthma cigarettes. So delighted was he that in 1901 he wrote to his mum to say he’d finally found something that actually worked. The article went on to say ‘it is interesting to reflect that until the 20th century doctors paid little attention to smoking as a health hazard, pre-

ferring instead to emphasise the perceived health benefits of tobacco and other inhaled substances, and that medicated cigarettes marketed for respiratory complaints continued to be endorsed, and smoked, by doctors until well after the Second World War.’ When I was 21, after having had my tonsils removed by a leading South African ear, nose and throat specialist, the first thing I did after regaining consciousness was to light a Lucky Strike. But I hurriedly stubbed it out when I saw the surgeon enter the ward. ‘No need to do that, dear boy’ he said, ‘smoking is great for the throat. Do you mind if I have one of yours?’ A couple of years later lung cancer ushered him into an early grave and I gave up the habit - until vaping came along.

Drivers can choose between three drive modes, depending on their preferences. The top speed is electronically limited to 93mph to preserve the energy stored in the 50 kWh battery and the range. A 100 kW DC fast-charging system allowing charging 80 per cent of the battery in just 30 minutes is standard equipment. It will be on sale from late summer 2020 and available in retailers from early 2021.
