Role to play MAYOR of Elche Carlos González has stressed the need for “consumer confidence” for the town’s economic recovery. At a meeting of the newly founded group Hostelería Elche he warned of the importance of avoiding further coronavirus outbreaks, and said “we all have a role to play.” Fifty hoteliers attended the meeting, during which Gonzalez said: “It is crucial that this sector, which is so important for the economy of Elche, is organised and associated with set objectives and collective strategies. “The fact there is now an association makes it easier for us to understand each other, have dialogue, and can set objectives together. “We are all aware that we have just come out of a serious situation and have to work together to achieve recovery.”

The council has also placed information boards explaining the direction which should be followed and enforcing mandatory use of masks. Councillor for Markets, Antonio Vidal, said: “From today, June 30, the Paseo is open at 100 per cent of its capacity, and safety measures must be respected.

“Vendors will have to stay inside the establishments and customers will have to keep the security distance, whenever possible, and will not be able to access the interior of the stalls, but will have to stay in front of them.” The Paseo de la Libertad reopened on May 24 with a capacity of 50 per cent.

Admissions down THE number of patients admitted to Valencian hospitals for coronavirus is down almost 30 per cent this week. On June 29 the Community had not registered any deaths for 24 hours, with just seven positive cases and 20 hospital discharges. On Sunday, June 21, 77 patients were admitted to hospital, with 55 needing hospitalisation on Sunday, June 28 - 22 less admissions in seven days. Minister of Health Ana Barceló said: “These figures show us that more and more people are defeating the virus every day thanks to the tireless work of the health staff.” There are currently 55 coronavirus patients on wards in the Community as a whole, seven of which are in ICU. By province, 27 are in Valencia (three in ICU), 25 in Alicante (three in ICU), and three in Castellon, (one in ICU).

Pre-op protocol

PRE-OP patients in the Murcia region will have to quarantine for seven days before entering the operating room. They will also undergo a PCR test to rule out Covid-19, 48 hours before the operation. In order to guarantee safety measures in the surgical and hospital areas, the Murcia Health Service (SMS) has issued rules and protocols for operations to protect both patients and professionals. Patients will be notified seven days before the operation date and will have to self-isolate during that time. In addition, 48 hours before entering the operating room, a PCR test will be carried out, and so long as the test proves negative, the operation will go ahead. In addition, as part of the strategy to reduce delays caused by the pandemic, outpatient consultations will be encouraged with a maximum response time of seven days in the different specialties.

Andalucia has registered several important blazes in just the last 10 days, one fire in mountains just behind popular Costa Almeria holiday resort Mojacar burning its way through nearly more than 180 hectares in less than 24 hours. And as hot air from the Sahara pushes up temperatures this week, and weather forecasters predict another heatwave will start sweeping across much of the south and centre of the country by the weekend, already tinder dry conditions in much of the country mean wildfires are a real risk. although the demand has decreased since Phases 1 and 2, when soup kitchens, for example, were working at more than twice their usual capacity. Councillor for Equality and Social Rights, Mariano Valera, said “no one has been left behind and we have shown that Elche mobilises with criteria of solidarity in difficult times.”

ELCHE will host a musical tribute to ‘frontline heroes’ who have battled against the coronavirus pandemic. The council is staging a concert by the Orchestra of the Valencian Community on July 3 in the Municipal Park from 9.30pm. Councillor for Culture, Marga Antón, said: “This is our way of thanking the frontline heroes, the health, fire, security and corporate bodies and individuals for their efforts and work to get us out of the pandemic as quickly as possible and their contribution to saving so many lives. “It is simply a gesture of homage and

recognition that will later be completed with a more formal act in the Grand Theatre, but, for now, it is the first step towards recognising all these people for the great sacrifice they have made for everyone.” The Orchestra of the Valencian Community was created in 2006 and is made up of international musicians selected by its founding director and first conductor, Lorin Maazel. The programme for the tribute concert includes works by Domenico Cimarosa, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn. Attendance will be by invitation.

Drastic measures

THE President of Murcia region has warned municipalities face further lockdown if an outbreak which originated with three passengers from Bolivia worsens. After a meeting of the Covid Monitoring Commission in San Esteban, Fernando López Miras said “the situation is worrying” and “drastic measures” are on the table. In light of the increase in cases in recent weeks, the regional government is not ruling out the confinement of certain municipalities. López Miras stressed that if the epidemic returns “it will sink us,” and warned “we run a great risk of going back into confinement which would be difficult to bear for many and that would mean an almost definitive blow to thousands of jobs.” The killer bug has already claimed the lives of 150 people in the region, and the outbreak which originated in Bolivia has infected 32 people in Murcia.

Healthy summer openings TWENTY health centres across Alicante Province will open during the afternoons this summer. Healthcare bosses have announced that centres with 12 doctors or more will stay open until 7pm. The Ministry of Health has agreed the move with UGT union representatives and shared a breakdown of those affected. These are: seven centres in the Alicante-Hospital General health department (Benalúa, Campoamor, Florida, Parque lo Morant, San Blas, San Vicent del Raspeig I and San Vicent del Raspeig II); and one centre in the AlicanteSan Juan health department (Alicante-Hospital Provincial).

In addition, the extension also applies to nine centres in the Elda health department (Elda Acacias, Elda Marina Española, Monovar, Petrer I, Petrer II, Sax, Villena I, Villena II and Centro Sanitario Integrado de Novelda); and three centres in the Elche-Hospital General health department (Altabix, El Raval and San Fermin). In the Valencia Community as a whole, 77 health centres will be open this summer until 7pm. The Health Department stressed it is a matter of “maintaining vigilance over the pandemic and facing up to the return to normality after having had to deal with the State of Alarm as a result of Covid-19.”

Paving the way

TEMPORARY SITE: The plot will house prefabricated classrooms in the interim. ELCHE has paved the way for a new school, preparing a site for temporary classrooms while building takes place. A 5,000 sqm plot has been paved to house the prefabricated classrooms of the La Paz School in Torrellano, so that the old facility can be knocked down and a new one built on the same site. Students will move into the temporary site at the end of the year, when the construction of the new school, which will house 340

students, is expected to start. The new bulding will have 12 primary classrooms, six infant classrooms, a library, dining room and a computer room in response to calls for improvements from Torrellano’s educational community. Mayor Carlos González said after its temporary use as an educational centre, the council intends to use the fabricated plot as a multipurpose centre for sporting and cultural activities in the district.

He added: “It serves as a stimulus in the continuous improvement of the quality of

Investing in towns and cities A TOTAL of €7 million has been budgeted to “continue investing in the regeneration of urban spaces” in Valencia - €1 million more than last year. The immigrants are of Algerian nationality and there were five women and three minors on board. All incoming immigrants are subjected to Covid-19 tests and medical tests which will help determine their health and whether they show any symptoms.

Body found Fatal crash

SPANISH police have launched an investigation after a man’s ‘lifeless body’ was discovered by a dog walker in the Murcia region on Sunday morning, June 28. Close to the victim’s body in Villaricos, Mula, was a vehicle, registered in Cabezo de Torres, which police believe may have belonged to the deceased.

A resident walking his dog at about 8.30am sounded the alarm after he found the victim, who appeared to have fallen a few metres, according to sources. The Guardia Civil said there are “no indications that the death was caused by what are considered natural causes,” and have opened an investigation.

A LORRY driver, 40, has died in a collision with a car in Los Montesinos. Torrevieja Park Fire Brigade freed the victim from his vehicle carrying firewood, but he died at the scene. The driver of the car was unhurt in the crash on the CV-935 on Tuesday morning, June 23.

A WOMAN, 74, has drowned at El Acequión beach in Torrevieja. The Centre for Information and Coordination of Emergency (Cicu) were alerted to a woman who was unconcious having been pulled from the sea. A unit of the SAMU was moved to the site, but despite the medical team carrying out advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres, they were unable to save the woman's life on Saturday morning, June 27. Cicu confirmed a post mortem will determine the cause of death as drowning.

He was investigated following an official complaint from a Cartagena victim of a phishing scam who revealed bank details after receiving an email informing him that he was entitled to an income tax refund. But instead of the expected credit from the tax authorities, he found

that an electrical goods firm had made a charge to his account for a top-of-therange mobile phone. The phone never reached its supposed destination and the delivery firm employee, who was the last person to handle the package, was sacked. It was not the first time this had happened, according to Spanish media sources, and following his arrest he was released pending trial.

E U R O W E E K LY N E W S re cently spoke with David Yo u n g , P r e s i d e n t o f t h e charity Reach Out Ext i e n d e L a M a n o , w h o a re based in Torrevieja. Reach Out are an NGO run by volunteers who help the homeless and the needy. One of the ways they do this is by running a charity shop where proceeds are used to provide for those in need. David contacted EWN after reading an article in another newspaper with regard to aid, provided during the health crisis, in Torrevieja and felt that the local town hall were being discriminatory in their allocation of funds. Another local Spanish charity seemed to be on the receiving end of the lion’s share of the funds. David pointed out “For

nine years we have provided welfare support, food, meals, hygiene facilities to the homeless, and yet we are ignored,” and added “Reach Out have been looking after 100+ homeless for years without a single penny from the government.” David was also very keen to point out what he believes is a great injustice to charity shops in Spain. “At the present time, anything sold in a charity shop in Spain is liable to 21 per cent IVA. “All sales are donations from supporters that have paid 21 per c e n t I VA w h e n originally purchasing the item in a retail or other store.”

Counterfeit medicine A RUSSIAN male has been arrested in Asturias Province accused of illegally manufacturing and selling medicines in Asturias, Alicante and Russia. Officers from the Guardia Civil discovered that this individual had no permits to allow the production of these medicines which sold for between €60 and €80 per unit and after analysis it emerged that the contents were potentially dangerous when taken by humans. When searching his

property, officers discovered 25 kilos of different substances, minerals, vegetables, nutrients, fertilisers, biofertilisers, and other supplements for agricultural use as well as 106 litres of feed additives meant for livestock use. It transpired that all of the ‘medicine’ was prepared in the man’s home using plastic bottles purchased from a pharmaceutical supplier and bearing false labels using the logos and trade names of two real Spanish companies.

When these professionals asked to be paid, the owner of the company told them that there were more health workers who wanted to work and that he had “no reason to make any contract” for them. The three Venezuelan

doctors were residing in Spain on a student visa and were not registered with the Social Security, despite making visits to care homes to treat geriatric patients during the critical days of the pandemic in which more than 7,000 elderly people died in the capital. When the workers complained, the company’s

manager, Eduardo Aragonés, threatened to dismiss them in order to recruit other doctors who were more in need of work and would not mind about working illegally. Besides the lack of legal contracts, complaints against Transamed also include delays in payments and lower salaries.

of Gibraltar on a kayak and were heading towards the coasts of Cádiz. According to police sources, the intervention took place at around 5.00am on Monday June 29 after the kayak had left the Moroccan coast with two immigrants on board. It is unknown whether they are from Morocco or Algeria. Salvamiento Maritimo was called to the scene after receiving an alert from the 112 emergency services in Ceuta which reported the presence of a kayak aimlessly sailing into the distance. There was a great deal of fog at this time and at 5.50am the rescue team found them in good health in front of the San Amaro beach in Ceuta and transported them to the National Police.

Careless owner THE owner of a small Yorkshire terrier has been reported for animal abuse after she left her puppy locked in the car for over four hours in 40-degree weather. The vehicle was parked in direct sunlight with no ventilation whatsoever. According to the Emergency Services, a neighbour in an area of Sevilla alerted authorities about the presence of a small dog locked inside a vehicle. Local Police proceeded to break a window of the car in order to rescue the little Yorkshire terrier who was in a dire state. Officers estimate that although it was 40 degrees outside, inside the car it was at least 50 degrees Celsius. The owner, a 49-year-old woman, was identified and sanctioned for her mistreatment of the animal.

Subhuman conditions A GANG of criminals in Madrid have been arrested for charging migrants, including families with children, around €250 to live in a storage unit. For €250 a month, the migrants were renting out small storage unit rooms without any ventilation and with a shared kitchen. The six individuals responsible for this crime against public health have been arrested for coercion and promotion of illegal immigration. The area was littered with cockroaches, bedbugs and rats. There was only one bathroom per 10 rooms (each room containing multiple people) and only two kitchens which were used in strict shifts. Most of the units were about nine squared metres and shared by three or four people who were coerced into paying €250 without any legal certainties such as a lease. LGBTQI: New law to be introduced. THE Ministry for Equality is taking the first steps towards a law that had until now, remained in Congress pending approval. The law aims to “recognise as a right” the “self-determination of trans people” as well as other measures to protect the LGBTQI community, despite government spokes-person María Jesús Montero, avoiding the debate on Tuesday after internal arguments from PSOE were leaked that seemed to reject

the measure. The right to self-determination will erase the need for a psychological evaluation and the compulsory two-year hormone treatment to be able to change a person’s gender on official documents and is included within the new LGBTQI law as well as the Trans Law proposed by the government in the coalition agreement. Regardless of the reservations within the PSOE party, the General Directorate of Sexual Diversity

and LGBT Rights has presented the ministry’s campaign for Pride 2020, headed by the slogan ‘Now, more than ever, Pride.’ During the presentation, Montero addressed the Trans community “I want you to know that your lives matter and as an institution, we are not going to backpedal. This government will do everything it can to ensure your lives are the same as everyone else’s, dignified, free, and most importantly, happy.”

Bleak future TOUGH times are ahead for Spain as the FMI predicts a 12.8 per cent drop in the country’s economy, the worst in the world. Despite having controlled the pandemic from a health point of view, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez admitted that a “dark horizon” looms over the country’s economy, as the latest forecasts from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) predict a 12.8 per cent drop in Spain’s GDP. Sánchez made the comments during the opening of the videoconference 'United response for Latin America and the Caribbean to Covid-19,' in which Spain brought together leaders from various countries of the region. In his opening remarks, the Prime Minister admitted that the coronavirus pandemic is far from "settled" despite the situation that Spain and Europe are currently experiencing, given the rapid expansion of the virus on the American continent. Sánchez appealed for unity now more than ever to face the “terrible health impact” of the coronavirus and, as a consequence, the “terrible economic and social impact of the pandemic, which has forced economies and governments to take forceful and also courageous decisions.” SOCIAL SECURITY services have reached an agreement with the unions to extend the extraordinary aid for freelancers beyond June 30, which is the date it is meant to expire. The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Jose Luis Escriva, announced on June 25 that after discussing the matter with different union representatives, they will extend aid. Escriva assures that the “extension of the aid that was initially deployed to alleviate

EIGHT OFFICERS: Now in quarantine after being spat at. home but he didn’t stay in quarantine nor did he attend his medical check-up. Since he did not attend a check-up they were not able to repeat the test to see if he had overcome the virus or not. The doctors involved in the case noted that there was no way to locate him and therefore he had not

been subjected to any types of health control. The eight officers who intervened in his arrest, custody and transfer have all been forced to quarantine. They are soon scheduled to undergo a PCR test to determine whether or not they are infected, however, none have been tested yet.

THE Guardia Civil has had to send out a warning to residents in Spain about a new wave of scams which involve people pretending to have a family member held hostage in exchange for money. The scammers try to extort anywhere from €2,000 to €10,000 from the families. For now, the majority of these calls have only been detected in Madrid, however, the police are following up an array of reports. In order to incite fear, the scammers pretend to be the ‘supposed hostage’ and scream for help and money in exchange for their release.

The Guardia Civil urge any members of the public who experience this scam tactic to come forward and report it to the police. They have also released a guideline for residents in case they do suffer from this scam. Tips include: • Do not answer any phone calls from unknown numbers. • Keep calm if you are receiving an extortion call. • Try and let them talk whilst you record the conversation. • Never give any personal details such as names or addresses during the phone call.

Stowaways hide in lorry THE port in the Spanish enclave of Melilla is under constant surveillance by officers of the Guardia Civil instructed to stop migrants from smuggling themselves onto lorries due to catch ferries to the mainland. As a matter of course, they sweep each lorry with

a heartbeat detector and when it reacted positively when they were checking a lorry full of bulk scrap metal, they brought in a canine patrol with a dog that could detect people. It immediately started barking furiously to indicate a discovery but the officers were faced with the

painstaking and potentially dangerous job of moving the scrap metal piece by piece to try to find the stowaways. In the end, they discovered four adults and two children, who were assisted out of their hiding places and found to be undocumented but all were in good health.

In Family for Spain OVER 90 per cent of Spanish families plan to spend their summer holiday in Spain this year, according to a national study carried out by #EnFamiliaPorEspaña (in Family for Spain). The study explores how family behaviours and views regarding holidays have changed since the country’s State of Alarm and lockdown ended. The survey confirmed that 91 per cent of Spanish families plan to spend their summer holidays closer to home, either within the region they live in, on the peninsula or on one of Spain’s islands. Around 64 per cent want to travel to a destination they haven’t travelled to before, ideally combining rural and beach tourism. Surprisingly, the majority will avoid air travel, as 90 per cent plan to travel by car to their holiday destination. HEALTH Authorities have tested residual waste samples from Barcelona and discovered traces of Covid-19 as early as March 2019. Investigators from the University of Barcelona have identified traces of the SARS-Cov-2 virus in samples from wastewater that were recovered from the Barcelona plant in March of 2019. This means that the virus could have been circulating around the area much earlier than authorities expected. The investigators defrosted samples of residual waters which showed that on January 15 the virus was already present, more than 40 days before the first official case of Covid-19 was detected. The coordinator of the project, Albert Bosch, contends that the “SARS-CoV2 genome levels clearly coincided with the evolution of Covid-19 cases in the population,” and that having detected this virus a month in advance, “would have allowed for a better response to the pandemic.”

The Guardia Civil officer, Christian Rios, has assured in various social networks that, after the dramatic episode in Leganes, he and little Izan “are now friends forever.” Rios was enjoying free time with friends in a park when he heard cries for help after Izan had reportedly lost consciousness, according to the Guardia Civil. The worst right wing THE New York Times, has branded Spain’s Vox party as “the worst rightwing party in democracy” as well as the “most dangerous.” The article released by the New York Times is highly critical of Vox and the role it has played during the management of the health crisis. The article touches upon the protests that Vox organised to “demand freedom” when the country was suffering the worst pandemic in modern history which at that point had claimed 27,000 lives. “This image portrays the worst of the rightwing in Spain since the return of democracy, and the most banal and dangerous” informs the article. The author of the text acknowledges that “the Sanchez government failed to handle the coronavirus crisis adequately,” but he also affirms that the protests “are promoted by a political organisation with a vocation for power.” For this reason, the American newspaper contends that this form of protest is “an act of radical opportunism for Vox.”

Loans for European Airlines ONCE again, the boss of Ryanair Michael O’Leary has come out against state support for airlines, this time asking the European Union to question the Dutch Government’s €3.4 billion loan to KLM. Initially, Mr O’Leary had said that Ryanair would tough it out without looking for any government support, but in May, did accept a €670 million loan from Britain, possibly on the ba­ sis that if British Airways and easyJet were going to benefit then his com­ pany might as well join in. Almost every EU member state

that has an airline has either issued a significant loan to help support it or in the case of Germany and Italy there are buy ins and takeovers in­ volved. Greenpeace and other champions of the environment however are not happy with the way things have gone in funding these European airlines, as they believe that a massive opportu­ nity to help save the planet has been ignored. How is annuity taxed? In his book You and the Law in Spain for 2011 David Searl notes that both lifetime and fixed­term annuities have tax reductions. They must be declared in the investment part of the tax form. I have a Swedish an­ nuity with a fixed time of 20 years. I am 80 years old and I have been declaring the annuity as lifetime at 8 per cent. But I think this is wrong. What percentage of the yearly amount should be declared? Second wave fears drive volatility in currency markets

VOLATILE: Amidst growing concerns of a coronavirus resurgence. This has been particularly damag­ ing for the pound. The currency has had to content with Brexit concerns and the Bank of England’s announce­ ment of more stimulus while growing increasingly sensitive to market senti­ ment. Despite the rise in coronavirus cas­ es setting back plans to reopen the US

economy, the US dollar has actually strengthened over the last two weeks as second wave fears have kept the safe­haven currency in strong de­ mand. Meanwhile, the euro has fluctuat­ ed in recent weeks, with Europe’s sol­ id progress towards eradicating the coronavirus being offset by the EU’s

failure to reach an agreement on a re­ covery fund as well as the threat of a transatlantic trade war. What do you need to look out for? Looking ahead, it’s likely the pound will remain on the back foot going for­ ward so long as Brexit progress re­ mains limited and the UK’s coron­ avirus figures remain elevated. Only a few weeks ago PM Boris Johnson had expressed confidence that a deal could be reached by the end of July, but that optimism isn’t shared by many. If the number of UK coronavirus in­ fections continue spiking in specific regions, the prospect of lockdown re­ strictions being reintroduced could weigh on GBP exchange rates. For EUR investors the focus at the start of July will be whether EU lead­ ers are able to agree on the terms of the coronavirus relief fund, with fur­

ther delays likely to undermine the single currency. The next ECB gathering will also be of interest, as will growth and output figures for the Eurozone’s largest economies. Finally, with coronavirus concerns continuing to weigh on market senti­ ment it’s likely we will see the US dol­ lar remain well supported over the coming weeks, although any gains could be tempered as political risks begin to grow. A very serious situation

IT strikes me that most of the the illegal street parties that are being held across the UK’s cities are not being staged as any celebration or gathering of people in pursuit of innocent fun. They are far more sinister than that. These are, particularly in London, mobs of young, predominately black lawbreakers, cocking an arrogant snook at authorities and intentionally flouting the rules to antagonise and provoke the police into more violent confrontation. It will therefore come as no surprise to me to subsequently hear the usual accusations levelled against the police of using ‘unnecessary force’ or the ‘heavy handedness’ we have come to expect. At the time of writing, 120 police have already been injured at these ‘gatherings.’ I can only assume that as yet no ‘innocent party-goers’ have been hurt or you can be rest assured the outcry would have been heard across the nation. This is of course exactly what these shadowy ‘party’ organisers want. They want these events to be the catalyst for the continuation and escalation of their war against the authorities and an excuse to ultimately disrupt and tear asun-

der the very fabric of the UK’s society. This is a very serious situation indeed. If the authorities don’t stop pussy footing around and appeasing those who condone and encourage this revolutionary racial violence, the streets of Britain’s great cities will begin to resemble the Beirut I warned about 30 years ago - and we will also witness the holocaust that a certain politician, far more intelligent and visionary than I prophesised even more years before that!

Talk about dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. The British government is set up like ducks in a fairground shooting gallery, and don’t the lefty media love having a ‘pop.’ It’s really very simple; let the government make a decision and then oppose it! ‘The government wants to set up three-metre distancing.’ Media. ‘We think this is overreacting.’ ‘The government has reduced distancing to one metre.’ Media. ‘This is dangerous and irresponsible.’ ‘The gov-

ernment is imposing total lockdown.’ Media. This is overkill and unnecessary.’ ‘The government wants to reopen some services and ease the lockdown.’ Media. ‘It’s too soon.’ Etc. etc. If you get my drift! The next move is to make sure their main interviewees are opposed to whatever subject they wish to demean, which gives the impression that the majority of the ‘experts’ disagree with the government policies. This results in the viewer beginning to think that the opinions and anti-government rhetoric being constantly aired must be supported by the majority. Although they may disagree, they then begin to doubt their own political beliefs. This is known as brain washing, pure and simple. Well, much to the main Media’s arrogant surprise, these methods didn’t work during the last elections. If they continue to underestimate the public intelligence in their efforts to undermine this government and rebuild their precious Labour party - they won’t work this time either. Just cos you can, you don’t have to MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man OUT for my walk the other day I noticed a restaurant proudly advertising that they specialise in Mexican, Indian and Italian food. I decided this is not a place I would go to eat any of their three specialities. My reasoning is that if I wanted to eat an Indian meal wouldn’t I be better to go to an Indian restaurant that only specialised in Indian food? I would love to know if anyone has been to one of these places and if so what was it like? This pandemic is going to sort out the men from the boys. The few eateries that I have been to have all made noticeable changes - trimmed down menus and more space. I love it. Nothing worse than being so close to the person next to you that you want to join in their conversation. I still insist I get my table with the wobbly leg of course but no more tables in the naughty corner or the loo. The biggest bonus is they are actually pleased to see you and the service is brilliant. Of course they are real-

ising now they need local customers as well as tourists. Saw a talk show the other night and the host was saying that the young should go out and do their thing. Be careful but basically get back to normal as it’s their time. We old have had our time and more or less nature should take its course with us. Meanwhile he’s doing his show in the comfort of his Beverly Hills mansion. If he feels so strongly why doesn’t he insist that he goes back to doing his show live in the studio with an audience who are happy to mingle? Or maybe he won’t because the network would be terrified of the consequences. I also saw someone on the UK news saying it was too soon to open the pubs and a few other places as they wouldn’t feel safe. I’m screaming at the TV - JUST ‘COS YOU CAN, YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO! The government can open up what they like. If you aren’t comfortable don’t go. If you are then go. Simple really. Finally I was really impressed watching 6,000 Americans cheering the POTUS drink a glass of water with one hand and then throwing the glass on the floor. What all world leaders should strive to emulate!

Liberty Seguros raises over € 6,000 for the Paralympic Youth Athletics Promises Team DUE to the pandemic with mandatory social distancing rules and heightened security measures, Liberty Seguros found itself in an unprecedented situation with regard to this year’s Liberty Race. For the first time ever, its flagship event took place online and delighted in achieving its objective of championing diversity and integration through sport. Raising an outstanding €6,333 for the Paralympic Youth Athletics Promises Team, the Liberty Race was once again hailed a resounding success. This year, the Liberty Race saw 3,000 individuals participate in the event with nearly 1,000 users of social media sharing photos across networks and the hashtag #MiCarreraLiberty experiencing an engagement of over 860,000 on Twitter and Instagram alone. The Liberty Race advocates

solidarity and unity whilst raising funds for young athletes with promising potential at sports level who have not yet benefited from the ADOP Plan. This programme is designed to assist elite sportspeople with disabilities in Spain to prepare for the Paralympic Games. As with previous years, funds raised through donations made by the participants of the race will go to the athletes in the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team. Supported by Liberty Seguros, the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team comprises young males and females from all over Spain between the ages of 12 and 20 that are living with physical, visual, or intellectual challenges, such as those with learning disabilities or debilitating conditions such as cerebral palsy. Funds raised through the Liberty Race help the athletes to enhance their level of perfor-

Between 2012 and the present day, the Liberty Race has raised an impressive € 246,333 in total to support these young sportspeople.

DEAR Euro Weekly, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made an excellent job with the coronavirus outbreak but he certainly has not thoroughly thought through the idea of scrapping 10-year-old cars. It may be a good idea for cities and large towns with their higher income and excellent bus service for those unable to replace their vehicle, but that is not the case for everyone nationwide. Has he taken into account the fact that a lot of people in villages and satellite urbanisations do not have that kind of service and are still recovering financially, being on lower incomes, from last September storms. IN the street you can trust yourself to wear a mask, cross the road, go back indoors if people refuse to follow social distancing measures, but what do you do if you are stuck in a 130ft long metal tube going at 575 mph through the sky? There’s nowhere to run. As the first passengers step off flights both in the UK and in Spain there seem to be different sides of the story. One gentleman spoke of no checks on the UK side and a free for all on board the plane where passengers were not allowed to space out and chose to remove masks when they settled in. Another traveller tells of flying into Stansted on a flight where passengers were spaced out, wearing masks and temperature checked upon arrival. Both were with the same low-cost airline…Ryanair. With many people who have been stuck in Spain waiting to see their family for the first time in months and sun worshippers with sights set on the coastal beaches, we would hope EVERY single flight would follow a strict protocol to ensure the safety in both countries and the stop of any spread of infection. So, what is the excuse? Laziness? Or maybe lack of training for staff? If you board a flight and passengers are not following measures you know are strictly important who can you turn to? The passengers themselves may not listen to reason (people don’t often take kindly to being told what to do), the air staff would hopefully be the main choice and keeping an eye on this as a priority or will we see frustrated captains turning back? For your own peace of mind always remember to look after number one, flights are never really the healthiest of places anyway so, keep your mask on, wear gloves, use hand sanitiser and try as best you can to keep your distance. Wash those travelling clothes as soon as you can. But remember it still continues when you hit the ground, for now, let’s all stay safe.

Returning from a fabulous lunch, over which, my husband and I had been discussing the BLM and events in the UK etc, fortunately, we are in total agreement about all aspects of life in the UK at present. I opened the Euro Weekly (your page first of course) and, on reading your column, was totally amazed. Were you sitting unseen at the next table?? You have echoed our thoughts exactly, and those of many others I’m sure. We love the UK, still have a property there and love to visit, but it is changing drastically, and not for the better. This morning, Spectrum radio played Vera Lynn singing There’ll Always Be an England, yes there will but sadly, not as we remember it. Thanks, Leapy for keeping it real. I am astounded at the lack of understanding that Leapy Lee displays when he comments on American politics. His recent commentary called ‘Blaming a Racist Virus’ is rife with errors and bias. The George Soros allegations are an old rightwing trope that no Americans take seriously. Trump’s PR stunt, clearing away peaceful protestors with flash grenades and tear gas for a photo op, has been condemned by such leading military leaders as General Mattis, General Kelly and General Milley, the acting head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. What Lee does not understand is that the brutal killing of George Floyd by white police officers has stirred an awakening of the American conscience. I was always very proud to tell people in other countries that I was English. La Madrague GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS Brigitte Bardot, or perhaps Elvis, said - we’re caught in a trap. At least, I seem to be. And i t ’s a t r a p I f i n d h a rd e r t o e s c a p e w i t h e a c h p a s s i n g d a y. Now that we’re free, and life is there for the taking, it appears that I prefer to stay home. As soon as the gates of life reopened, I was full of enthusiasm. Eager to visit many of my favourite haunts, I soon realised, I longed to be in my garden. Suddenly traffic feels heavy, streets busy, and beaches, well, let’s say, I watch from h o m e . W h y b e s u r ro u n d e d b y people, when I could be poolside with my dog, and a Whipering Angel? Post, for the last few months, has been pretty nondescript. In fact, it’s been a drag. Where once, fun invitations, were my breakfast reading. I mean, who needs to w a t c h d o o m a n d g l o o m o n T V, when you can have, ‘see you soon’ on an invitation. H o w e v e r, s a d l y I ’ d b e c o m e used to, little other than bills, upon bills. Then, as if a ray of glory from days past. This week, the postman arrived with envelopes, too refined, to deliver an electricity bill. All at once, it seems as if everyone wants to host a party. Everything, from stylish days sailing, to charity galas, and all in between. Marbella, and the world, is alive, and ready to party. After months of shorts and trainers, now life requires a dress code. It requires numerous dress codes, worse luck. Too many to consider. I stare at my recently, unpacked, and arranged wardrobe, and I despair. I want to stay in my shorts and Nikes. These days if it requires more than this, I probably won’t b o t h e r. T h e o n l y a d d i t i o n o f change I do make, from time to time, being, Gucci loafers. That’s as far as I’ll go. And, that’s for lunch, ‘proper.’ Things have come to a pretty pass, when I close the wardrobe doors, and RSVP no to parties, that sound, glittering. However, the new me, is in fact, the old me.

GARDENING: I now much prefer the slower pace of life. Before a life of endless social whirl, I was once a very relaxed person. One, who preferred to spend time alone. One, who preferred the beach, to flash bulbs. Having been dislocated from the world, I somehow feel, I now want to remain on the periphery. I want to hold on to the slower pace version of existence, that I’ve lived for the first half of the year. I rise earlier and earlier, as summer unfolds. The birds now waking me at times, that I used to fall home. During lockdown, I found myself doing things, very much out of my norm. I guess, anything was better than sitting around all day, watching endless news reports about the dreaded virus. One task I enjoyed, was taking care of the garden. And as life moves on, I wake very early and I’m in the garden, lost in silence. So lost, that most days our gardener arrives and asks me what I’m doing. While dancing takes place on the terrace almost every night. By midnight, I watch life unfold on Instagram, and I say, let them dance. Let them sleep late. But, I must be up with the lark, or whatever bird it is that wakes me at 04.40.

MOTORING ROAD TEST by Nick Fletcher SUZUKI’S Vitara is a compact SUV which is practical, reliable and relatively affordable and while there is stiff competition in the sector, the Vitara has plenty of pluspoints including its mildhybrid technology and the option of four-wheeldrive. Vitara prices start at €23,669 (£20,849) for the SZ4 trim which includes digital radio and CD player, USB port and Bluetooth connectivity. You also get alloy wheels, cruise control, climate control and automatic wipers. However, many buyers are likely to opt for the SZ-T and SZ5 trim levels which add a more sophisticated touchscreen infotainment system with integrated satnav, smartphone mirroring and a rear view camera. too, and no awkward load lip, though the split-fold rear seats do not lie completely flat. Rivals include the Volkswagen T-Cross and SEAT Arona, but Suzuki has its own loyal following and this latest Vitara will have strong appeal to existing customers and with its revised styling and keen pricing is likely to attract new customers to the brand. Model tested is UK specification and equipment levels and prices may vary in other markets.
