There has never been a more crucial time to take

The regions are awash with excellent restaurants, bars and cafes offering a typically friendly Spanish service. And local shops and businesses will now be relying on us to help them rebuild and stay afloat, hoping that money that wasn’t spent during shut down will rejuvinate trade.

BUSINESSES in Orihuela are invited to apply for a share of €400,000 aid to try to alleviate the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic. After months of closure and an uncertain future, the town council’s Department of Commerce has pooled cash from a number of departments to support traders and avoid closures. We followed the instructions of our President, Pedro Sanchez, regardless of our political inclinations and by doing what we should we went from being one of the world’s most dangerous countries to one of the safest. Regardless of nationality, we came together and did everything asked of us, living for 98 days in a world that only weeks before we didn’t know existed. We closed our businesses, locked up our children, shielded our elderly and vulnerable, facing a frightening world of social distancing with remarkable dignity in our masks and gloves. Each night at 8pm we applauded those keeping us safe and we formed amazing self-sacrificing groups who cooked, baked, shopped and delivered for others with no thought for themselves. We showed tolerance and compassion as we queued for anything and everything and if we worried about our families’ health, finances and futures, we
Back to life A 15-YEAR-OLD boy in Alcalatén in Valencia was brought back to life through Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) after drowning in a pool. According to the Centre for Emergency Information and Coordination, the teenager was rescued and brought back to life. He was rendered unconscious and appeared to have drowned whilst swimming in the pool with his friends. The incident occurred at around 6pm on Saturday, June 20, in the municipality of l’Aclora when the minor was unconsciously brought out of the pool and aided by the emergency services. The boy’s companions had begun the basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres, which were carried on by the Primary Care physician and the basic life support health team. Once the emergency team arrived, they performed advanced CPR and other recovery techniques which managed to bring the teenager back to life. The boy was evacuated by helicopter to the Castellon General University Hospital as he showed symptoms of drowning.

New schedule ORIHUELA Council has amended its schedule of priority for pedestrians. Over the last few weeks, the main streets were pedestrianised from 8pm to allow for safe social distancing. It has now been agreed to amend this, and pedestrians will be given priority from 9pm to 11.30pm. The council said: “This schedule will apply to the pedestrian route that Orihuela has had in place since May 22, to promote mobility and distance between people in order to prevent the spread of the Covid-19.”

We, too want a busy landscape of bars, restaurants, beaches and hotels where visitors receive the best service they have ever had. We want them to buy properties, bring their skill sets here and their families. We want them to rebook in August and October and to come back at Christmas. More than anything else we want our wonderful business community to stop suffering. We don’t want to see any more closures, just busy and contented owners who are being rewarded for their patience and dedication

Parking solution
MOTOR home parking to be regulated in Mazarron in response to complaints about a lack of facilities. The council is working on a new ordinance on parking areas and is inviting residents and associations to contribute to the plans. The local authority intends to approve a municipal ordinance that will regulate parking areas and service areas for motor homes and “approved housing vehicles” throughout to regulate the stay and movement of these vehicles throughout the town. Mazarron has seemingly seen an increase in users in recent years, together with a surge in complaints. The council says it wants to “achieve adequate coexistence and maintenance of certain areas of the Mazarrón municipal district” to address the issue. And the public is invited to submit their views forward between June 22 and July 9, on the council's website mazarron.es, to open a process of citizen participation.

Be-cycling scheme POLICE in Murcia have put unclaimed stolen and recovered bicycles to good use and given them to the region’s Association for Refugees and Migrants though the rightful owners can reclaim them at any time. The National Police delivered several bikes to PAREM, having been in storage at the El Carmen District Police Station for some time. Officers tried to locate the legitimate owners ‘by all possible means,’ but given the unlikelihood of finding many of them, it was decided ‘to use them in solidarity.’ When these bicycles are being used rather than discarded, if anyone recognises them as their own,

Both over the limit POLICE in Murcia arrested two drink drivers after a crash involving a car and a scooter in Beniajan. The Local Police were called to the scene last Thursday June 18 on a small road in the town, and immediately tested the rider and the motorist after they both showed signs of intoxication. They both tested positive, while the scooter rider was also found to be under the influence of drugs and lacked a driving licence.

Overturned car TWO young people were injured, one seriously, when their car overturned outside Torre Pacheco in Murcia. The male and female, both 19, were travelling in Torre Pacheco, shortly before 9am on Monday, June 22, when for unknown reasons, the driver lost control and crashed. Both were trapped inside the car, and once emergency services had rescued them from the wreck, they were transferred to separate hospitals. The young man was taken to Los Arcos del Mar Menor hospital, while the woman was taken to Virgen de la Arrixaca in Murcia. One of them is said to have been ‘seriously hurt.’ The 112 emergency centre received a call from a passerby at 8.47am who reported an overturned car with two occupants calling for help. LocaPolice, ambulances and medical personnel from the Management of Urgencies and Sanitary Emergencies 061 and firefighters from the Consortium of Fire Extinction and Rescue of the Region of Murcia were mobilised.
Disciplined cop after explaining he was “concerned” about the situation and “the large number of infections” that existed at that time. He also reportedly suggested establishing shifts and fixed pairs among the 17 officers that were working at that time. The officer seemingly told his sergeant that if he caught coronavirus, “he and the lieutenant would be responsible,” although he denies raising his voice. In mid-April, the officer, who reportedly suffers from Chrohn’s disease and diabetes, again re-
quested the implementation of measures, but his superiors told him to “stop with the protocols” and go to his doctor to sign a medical discharge. In the end, his bosses decided to discipline the officer over a “lack of consideration or impropriety with the superiors.” The officer, who defends his actions in a letter to the Directorate General of the Guardia Civil, claiming he has not committed “any disciplinary offence,” has asked the Lieutenant Instructor to close the file “without imposing a sanction.”

Wish granted A MAN with a slightly disturbing wish in Murcia saw it come true after he was sent to jail after committing three crimes in one night. According to news sources, the 41year-old man suffers from drug addiction. During the State of Alarm, he was arrested various times but released. However, last week his wish came true as he committed three violent robberies in one night and was sent to jail. The first was at the Reina Sofia hospital when he pushed a woman onto the floor as she was going to her work and snatched her mobile phone. The second robbery happened at a taxi rank in the Carmen neighbourhood. The thief demanded the driver give him all of his money whilst he was holding a large knife, however, he was unsuccessful as the driver deflected the weapon and the thief ran. Finally, the detainee allegedly committed a robbery at a petrol station on the El Palmar highway. When police found the suspect, he was pleading that the officers arrest him and lock him up, or else he would continue with his criminal activity as this was how he would fuel his drug addiction.

A happy ending POLICE managed to rescue a wild boar trapped in a canal in Murcia using novel methods. The animal had fallen into the Tajo-Segura post-transfer canal on Thursday, June 18, and was unable to get out despite its best efforts. Officers from Archena Guardia Civil were de-
termined to devise a way to rescue the boar so that it wouldn’t drown, and with the help of a rope, managed to haul it from the water and set it free. Officers claimed it “wasn’t easy, and the boar had to be convinced” but the drama had a happy ending.

Dos and Don’ts for e-scooters ALMORADI Town Hall has revealed its regulations for escooters and other personal mobility vehicles (PMVs). The bylaw bars scooters from pavements and ‘recommends’ not using them in the town’s squares and parks. PMVs may carry only one person and should be used for transporting shopping, butane bottles or other objects, although this does not apply to the vehicles of persons with reduced mobility. Unlike many other Costa Blanca municipalities, Almoradi only ‘recommends’ taking out third party insurance, while helmets are recommended, but are obligatory only for under-16s and the more powerful Type A or Type B scooters. All PMVs must have reflectors, lights and a bell and should not be used while talking on a mobile or wearing headphones. Users are also liable to be tested for alcohol or drugs. Alfonso Garcia, Almoradi’s councillor responsible for the municipality’s Local Police emphasised the “great work” carried out by the local force which has been working on the project for some months. For the first two weeks, police will be informing the public of the scooter regulations but will later begin fining infractions. THREE farm thieves’ efforts proved fruitless and landed them in custody on the Costa Blanca after police found 600 kilos of stolen peaches in their car. As part of an operation against agricultural thefts, Murcia Guardia Civil stopped a ‘suspicious vehicle’ in Cieza, and were amazed to find it jam packed with the three detainees and fruit. EL HONDO: A haven for birds and sport for huntsmen. FRICTION continues between environmentalists and the hunters who use El Hondo national park. The Friends of the Southern Alicante Wetlands Association (AHSA) criticised the regional government, which it accused of “forgetting” hunting reforms in the area. AHSA pointed out in
the Spanish media that last November the Generalitat’s Environment department announced that it would modify technical plans for hunting on wetlands’ reserves in the south of Alicante Province. According to AHSA’s Sergio Arroyo, that this declaration was made after several teals, shot by huntsmen, were found dead in El Hondo. At an El Hondo board meeting attended by an AHSA representative it was agreed that quotas would be adjusted, and night hunting reduced by an hour. Six months later, AHSA claimed that it has yet to learn about these changes.

€22 million recovery budget SOME €22 million has been budgeted to promote economic recovery, modernise public spaces and create jobs in Elche. Mayor Carlos González said the council has already pledged €5.6 million to deal with the social emergency and promote economic recovery, with a further €16 million earmarked. “Thanks to this modification, we have set up the ‘Reactiva’T Elx’ aid for small businesses and self-employed workers; we have eliminated the table and chair tax; we have allocated more aid to pay property tax and water for the most vulnerable families and have increased the items for social emergency aid and food vouchers,” said González, adding that a further €1 million will be budgeted to “continue supporting trade, restaurants and hotels through rental aid.” In addition, a significant investment will be made to reactivate public works “to generate wealth and employment.” The mayor said: “This year we plan to allocate more than €15 million to works that, in addition to improving and modernising public spaces, will give a significant boost to the construction sector and, as a result, to job creation.”

Warehouse blaze MURCIA firefighters tackled a blaze at a vehicle warehouse close to an ITV centre in Mazarron last Thursday afternoon, June 18. Several witnesses called the Emergency Coordination Centre 112 RM at around 2pm alerting them to a fire at the building in Calle La Pinilla road on RM-E19 in Mazarron. The Coordinator of the Consortium of Fire and Rescue Services for the Region of Murcia despatched firefighters from three stations, Alhama de Murcia, Lorca and Mazarron. At the same time Mazarron Local Police and Red Cross health workers were sent to the scene, and the Guardia Civil was notified. The fire was extinguished at just after 5pm and there were no injuries reported.
Farewell to the force AFTER helping to pave the way for women on the force, Cartagena’s first fem a l e L o c a l P o l i c e o ff i c e r completed her last shift last week. Mari Carmen Garrido joined the police in 1980, and after 40 years serving the Cartagena community, her colleagues gathered to say goodbye. She said: “I did not expect to cry nor this farewell from my colleagues, I am seeing that they appreciate me and they will miss me, just as I will miss them. In the end it is a whole life together.” Councillor for Public Safety, Juan Pedro Torralba, highlighted the retiring officer’s great career, and said she is “very much loved by her colleagues” and had seen many changes in the force. A lease of life AN old football ground will welcome crowds again in Los Alcazares as it’s transformed into a drive-thru cinema for the summer. The disused pitch, which was abandoned after being washed away several times by floods, will screen movies on Friday nights at 10pm throughout July and August. The town hall aims to recreate ‘a drive-in cinema in the purest American style of the 1950s.’ A council spokesperson said: “The difficult circumstances that the country is going through due to Covid-19 prevent us from being able to carry out other kinds of summer activities in which large numbers of people gather, such as standing concerts and other kinds of traditional festivities. “For this reason, José Carlos Castejón, councillor of Fiesta, is working on other alternatives so that the residents of Los Alcazares have options for leisure.” The exact films and dates will be released shortly.

Lack of Battle plan protection VALENCIA’S Ministry of Health has been accused of failing to provide protection for frontline personnel during the Covid-19 pandemic. The health union CSIF has denounced the Conselleria de Sanidad for the alleged crimes of ‘misconduct by omission and negligent homicide,’ claiming health personnel were not given adequate protective equipment during the coronavirus crisis. And the complaint will now be heard in the region’s Superior Court of Justice (TSJ). A report from the Court of Instruction number 2 of Valencia, which has transferred the case to the higher court, states “the complaint should be admitted and referred to the Superior Court of Justice given the capacity of the person denounced,” adding the union’s “main mission is the defence of workers.” On April 15, CSIF filed a criminal complaint against the Ministry of Health due to “the lack of protection for health care personnel,” reports Las Provincias. The union explained in its complaint that “despite the recommendations of WHO, the declaration of international health emergency, the recommendations of the Ministry of Health in this regard and the writings presented by CSIF, the Ministry of Health incurred in an obvious inactivity.”

A MADRID resident has tragically fallen to his death after locking himself out of his second home. The 54-year-old had left his keys inside his thirdfloor apartment on an urbanisation in Denia, and tried to get in by climbing over his neighbour’s balcony on Thursday, June 18. But according to sources, he lost his footing, managed to hold on to the railing of the second-floor balcony before fatally falling to the ground. The Local Police tried to resuscitate the victim with a defibrillator, and ambulances from SAMU and Basic Life Support (BLS) as well as the fire brigade were called to the scene, but they couldn’t save the victim.
Family dispute year-old son’s ‘numerous’ wounds are said to be less critical. According to reports, the suspect, 52, who was treated for a gash on his leg, recently attempted to self-harm

The incident took place shortly after 4pm on Thursday, June 19, at an urbanisation in Calle Maestro José Garberí Serrano. The 112 service received several emergency calls alerting them to a dispute, and patrols from the National and Local Police of Alicante were sent to the scene, as well as two ambulances. When they arrived, they found the woman in a ‘serious condition,’ while the son had cuts on his hands and arms. Once the woman was stabilised, she and her son were taken to a nearby hospital. The Judicial Police Brigade has launched an investigation.

Artichokes as art for some time has made efforts to obtain protected Designation of Origin or Protected Geographical Indication status for the local product, Gomariz said. Artichokes are one of the most profitable Vega Baja crops, thanks to the fertile soil of Dolores and other municipalities close to the El Hondo, although most of this year’s production was lost during last September’s floods caused by the Isolated High Altitude Depression (DANA). A €17,000 SCULPTURE is to be installed at the roundabout on the road linking Dolores and San Fulgencio. The sculpture features artichokes, the Vega Baja’s traditional crop, explained Dolores’ mayor Manuel Gomariz. The project was first discussed with local businessmen and associations three years ago with the aim of highlighting an emblem of the Vega Baja in general and Dolores in particular, he revealed. Doors shut as precaution THE confirmation an expat has tested positive for Covid-19 in the tiny Costa Almeria village of Piedra Amarilla in Partaloa has prompted local two British-run bars and a community centre to keep their doors shut until July 3 as a precaution. Partaloa Council reported the news a coronavirus case had been detected in the locality on Friday June 19, but reassured residents the situation was “under control” and that the health authorities were studying who the man had been in contact with in accordance with protocols. Outbreak A SMALL outbreak is being investigated in Murcia which, according to the Ministry of Health, has stemmed from a

PUBLIC pools in Elche will be making a splash from this weekend. The council has announced the town’s eight municipal pools will open on Saturday, June 27, with the new safety measures to protect against a resurge of Covid-19 cases. Only the Palmerales pool may take a few days longer to be back in action due to ‘some technical problems.’ Councillor for Sports, Vicente Alberola, said that this summer’s season will see the pool closed between 2pm and 4pm to carry out disinfection measures. “The regulations allow the use of up to 75 per

UNDER LOCKDOWN: It’s back to Phase two. AFTER only one day of Spain lifting its State of Alarm, authorities on Monday June 22 announced that three districts in Aragon would be going back to stage two lockdown
measures. The districts of Cinca Medio, Bajo Cinca, and La Litera in northeastern Spain have returned to phase two of Spain’s lockdown plan, that puts much stricter limits on capacity in public spaces and shrinks the size of gatherings. Sira Repolles, Aragon’s health minister said, “The infection situation has changed rapidly in some areas.” He told a press conference. “The emergence of new cases has multiplied by about 15 times
in recent days in these areas.” Regional health authorities have been in charge of the coronavirus response, since Spain’s State of Alarm was lifted. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has said, “Unless the country is under a State of Alarm, travel cannot be broadly limited. Therefore authorities are recommending people avoid entering or leaving the affected areas, however they cannot legally forbid them to do so.”

Ceremony boycott ADDRESSING potential voters in Galicia prior to their July 12 election, Vox President, Santiago Abascal has said that his party will not take part in the State Ceremony due to take place on July 16 in honour of those who died in the pandemic and essential workers who risked everything. According to Abascal, the President of the Spanish government Pedro Sánchez is using this as an excuse to try to justify the actions of what he called a "criminal" government which he believes hid the real number of those who died. He went further by saying that the best tribute to those who suffered was the bringing of justice to the “criminal” government, especially as the whole of Spain was already in mourning for those who died.

CORREOS, the national courier ser vice has launched it’s first-ever LGBTQ stamp in commemoration of Pride month which features a subtle homage to the Costa del Sol. The month of June is typically referred to as ‘pride,’ a month in which Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people celebrate their history and community. The official Pride Day is celebrated on June 28 and therefore Correos has joined the rest of the world in celebrating this event. Saving seals in Santander THE Anima Naturalis charity and pressure group in Spain has taken up the rights of seals, sea lions and penguins in a mini zoo in the city of Santander. Many have been shocked by pictures of injured sea lions and penguins and in at least one case a dead seal wrapped in a rubbish bag whilst another is covered in moss floating
in stagnant water. Following their campaign, the matter is now before the Santander Council and the charity will be undertaking a review of the birds and sea creatures with a view to proving that they are neglected so that the animals may be removed to safe accommodation and the mini zoo closed down.
Nowhere to party THE Ibiza government has announced that clubs will not reopen this summer, according to reports. Tourists are gearing up to return to Spain this summer, but the Balearic government has now announced that clubs will not reopen for the 2020 season. A report from Spanish press suggests clubs will remain shuttered for this year’s season, and possibly into 2021. Clubs were initially given the
green light to open this month from Spain’s national government during the ‘third phase’ of opening after lockdown, but the island’s biggest clubs confirmed they are to remain shuttered. Despite the Spanish government’s approval, the Balearic Islands president, Francina Armengo, ordered the clubs to remain shut, citing outbreaks of coronavirus in other countries due to the reopening of nightlife. If the clubs were to open, the regu-
lations regarding capacity, no dancing, and dance floors to be covered with tables, and masks being in use where social distancing isn’t possible would make opening extremely difficult financially. Tourism is one of the most crucial industries in Spain, especially in Ibiza. Spain welcomes approximately 80 million tourists a year, with the industry providing over 12 per cent of the country’s GDP.

Euro Weekly News spoke directly with the couple who cannot be named for legal reasons. They are a mixedrace gay couple who have two sons, now seven and eight, brothers by mother, who were adopted seven years ago. The eldest is also of mixed race and they both have only ever known Spanish life and attended school in Spain, and this is their home. The couple are urgently trying to raise funds in order to keep a roof over their heads. However, a short while ago they realised that the lawyer they had hired had not filed any paperwork as requested and, on his own admission, had been negligent in legal cases and, as such, is responsible for the family’s massive loss. Whilst also trying to set up a business in Spain, with so-called aid from the same lawyer, they lost all of their financial security and home, along with all family possessions without notice. Unfortunately, since then, they have had to rely on the support of friends and local charities to keep a roof over their heads. The couple have sold everything possible and are now down to their last week of free accommodation before being put on to the streets. “We have tried all angles to
get help and we have run dry, as it seems our official residency was not filed properly by our lawyer and, as such, this has meant we have no support from the Catalan gover nment even though they have helped with food vouchers, school fees etc for which we are so grateful,” said one of the partners. Their friend Marina has set up a GoFundMe page ‘Support a family with legal costs and homelessness’ to raise money to support them regarding accommodation and legal fees. Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL HAVING seen the viral video of a police officer in Hackney, London on the ground being attacked by youths who don’t seem to care about any consequence, one can’t help but think that the balance between democracy and freedom are being pushed to the limits in the UK. Policing by consent and not by force is the philosophy by which the UK has always tried to uphold the law. However, as pointed out by our man in the know when it comes to Spanish politics and rights, Jose Maria Rodrigo “The public respect towards the police in the last couple of weeks is shocking from a Spanish point of view and reflects a political problem which is clearly reflected in society. The Local Police, as their name points out are close to the communities and police by consent. The National Police are focused in larger towns and cities and deal with harder types of
crime and riots. It is their job to police by force when the situation requires them to maintain the status quo between democracy and freedom for all. The Guardia Civil is perhaps the most versatile of the three as they will take the role of Local Police in the villages and back up the National Police when needed in riots. Everybody in Spain has been able to see how these forces’ no nonsense attitude to policing has guaranteed a lockdown which has seen excellent results, making residents feel safe. To be able to police by consent there has to be a balance between communities and its police and from a Spanish point of view “the UK politicians have had a counter-productive attitude towards long running issues which have been reflected these past weeks on the streets of Britain,” said Jose Maria.

Will UK assets invite a bigger tax bill after Brexit? While Brexit itself will not affect the double tax agreements that determine which country has the right to tax expatriates, two key changes are set to happen from 2021 that may change your tax treatment. First, UK assets will no longer be EU/European Economic Area (EEA) assets. In some cases, this means they may stop receiving favourable tax treatment abroad. Second, the UK government will no longer be bound by EU freedom of movement rules for capital, giving them more scope to tax nonresidents. Even without Brexit, once you are living abroad it is sensible to review whether holding on to UK assets is still in your best interests. UK property The UK has gradually increased the tax burden on property for overseas residents. For example, after years without capital gains tax liability, ‘non-resident capital gains tax’ (NRCGT) started applying to nonUK residents selling UK residential

Transfers to EU/EEA-based QROPS are currently tax-free for EU residents, but there is a 25% ‘overseas transfer charge’ for other transfers. The UK government could easily extend this to EU transfers once no longer bound by the bloc’s rules. If you
are considering transferring, take regulated advice now – pensions paperwork is a lengthy process and there is limited time before the transition period ends. put out the blaze alongside teams of forest firefighters. The steep terrain made it impossible to get fire engines near to the flames.
The intensity of the blaze was such it tur ned the evening sky in Mojacar a bur nt orange, while the smoke could be seen as far away as Aguilas in Murcia. Infoca reported it was a tough night. Some 150 firefighters worked tirelessly until morning to stop the ‘difficult to fight’ fire advancing further, helicopters and planes rejoining the efforts when the light came up. After an anxious 24 hours, there was relief for local residents by midday on Monday when Infoca reported the wildfire was under control. Firefighting teams remained working on Tuesday to ensure nothing was still smouldering. There were no reports anyone was hurt in the fire or of damage to property, but two families were evacuated from their homes as a precaution. ON Thursday June 18, the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE) reported that the abandonment of dogs in the country has increased by 25 per cent since the start of the de-escalation period. Spain is one of the worst countries in Europe regarding the abandonment of pets, as each year 140,000 cats and
dogs are left on the streets. The RSCE communicated that at the end of May about 2,000 dogs were abandoned in Spain. This period coincides with the first two weeks of the de-escalation plan as well as the emergence of summer and the end of the State of Alarm. The RSCE warned of a
50 per cent rise in the demand for puppies amid a pandemic, that is, “about 5,000 dogs who, in many cases, were instrumentalised as a means of going for a walk, entertaining children or creating a greater bond by having more time to be together.� These puppies are now likely to have been abandoned to fend for themselves.

Violent rampage Test and trace KALUA, the monkey at Kanpur Zoo in India, is fond of liquor and eating meat, however, this addiction caused him to go on a violent rampage, killing one person and injuring 250 more. The primate, who will remain in a cage for a long period of time after this incident, was raised by an occultist who was very fond of alcohol and who would feed the monkey atypical food. When this man died, Kalua developed a dangerous withdrawal syndrome from not being able to satisfy his addiction.
They soon found him on the streets of Mirzapur where he lived, attacking anyone who crossed his path, Kalua had already bitten more than 30 children when he was caught by the Mirzapur Forest Department team. The monkey attacked anyone who would approach, but especially women and children whom he launched at and chased. Several children have had to undergo plastic surgery after the animal tore at their faces. The vet at the centre assures that they began to give him vegetarian food after learning of his case, but that his habits did not change.
Suspect arrested THAMES VALLEY police have identified the suspect responsible for the fatal stabbings at the Reading park terror incident on Saturday, June 20. The suspect is be-
lieved to be a 25-yearold Libyan asylum seeker named Khairi Saadallah. The Thames Valley Police’ Counter Terrorism Policing have declared the stabbing attack as a terror incident.
The attack resulted in three fatalities and several other people injured requiring hospital treatment. The investigation is now being handled by the UK’s counter-terrorism police.
THE UK will switch to Apple and Google technology for its Covid-19 test-and-trace app, its home-grown system was not working well enough on Apple’s iPhone. The test and trace programme is reportedly key to reopening the country but has been dogged by problems. The app developed by the National Health Service (NHS) was initially expected to be rolled out nationwide in May but did not materialise. Dido Harding, head of the test-and-trace programme, and Matthew Gould, chief executive of the health service’s technology unit NHSX said “We have agreed to share our own innovative work ... with Google and Apple, while using their solution to address some of the specific technical challenges identified through our
Google/Apple app to be used in the UK. rigorous testing.” The original system was used and positive tests numbered over 85,000 people but of those over 25 per cent couldn’t be contacted. The spin from officials was that they admitted that the change of tack on the app was unplanned, but denied that it was a setback. But Apple and Google’s model has frustrated the government as they are putting the privacy of customers over the technologies’
usefulness. The U-turn happened after the NHS app, which was being tested on the Isle of Wight off the southern coast of England, was found to work well on Google’s Android operating systems, but not on Apple iPhones. However, Britain wants further improvements to the Google-Apple platform, meaning that the original hope of a launch last May is set to be missed by months rather than weeks.

THE John Lewis Partnership, which owns department stores and Wait rose supermarkets in the UK has an nounced that it is stepping up its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by building a dedicated biomethane gas filling station. This will enable its largest heavy goods vehicles to use a lowcarbon alternative to diesel and in addition, it plans to stop using fossil fuels across its entire 4,800 strong trans port fleet by 2030. The new biomethane gas filling station will be built in conjunction with Air Liquide and will open at the
Partnership’s head office in Bracknell in December 2020, making it the business’s first onsite gas filling sta tion. It will facilitate the conversion of the Bracknell Waitrose fleet to biomethane and complement gas filling stations already in use near to John Lewis and Waitrose regional distribution centres in Leyland, Lan cashire, and in Northampton. Serving some 120 Waitrose heavy goods vehicles, the lorries will run on biomethane made from food waste and food processing waste materials rather than diesel which will reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent.
Over the next seven years, it is es timated the Bracknell site alone will save over 70,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the carbon footprint produced by over 13,000 UK house holds. Another addition will be the introduction of 1,750 electric vans alongside 750 refrigerated trailers converted from diesel to electric dri ve. In addition, the Partnership’s 1,300 strong car fleet will become 100 per cent electric and any remain ing vehicles that could not be con verted to biomethane or electric will use hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biodiesel.

It will all be too late
AS you read this, thousands of black men, women and children are being slaughtered and enslaved in Nigeria. Black genocide is still a daily occurrence in many parts of the world and black youngsters are being killed on our streets in ever increasing numbers. All in all it is an appalling and utterly tragic situation. But why are we seeing no demonstrations concerning these issues? Where are all the marchers and BLM protests? What’s happened to all the black leaders appearing in the media, decrying the situation and urging governments to ‘do something’? Personally I only discovered most of these facts with research. So can anyone please enlighten me why it is that black lives only appear to really matter when members of the white community are involved? It simply doesn’t make sense; unless there is some ulterior motive afoot! Ah well, only time and tide will answer that question. What is more worrying is the amount of air time the main stream media gives to those who support these ‘causes.’ On the social media, over the last few weeks, numerous, often extremely articulate members of the black commu-

nity have appeared, decrying the BLM movement and its methods. Intelligent black and ethnic men and women of all ages have been putting forward strong arguments as to why they actually don’t feel oppressed at all and affirming that all opportunities are there for both black and white, with many praising the system and the societies that have made them successful. Why don’t we see
any of these people on the main stream? Why aren’t some of them given the same amount of air time that the decriers and dissenters receive? Well I’ll tell you why, the left wing media are the pawns and propaganda outlets of the money men; the true shadowy manipulators of the societies we live in. It is also the reason that large conglomerates, often inexplicably seem to have leftist
leanings. This is because left wing policies higher benefits, nationalisation etc, encourage people to rely more on the state, which in turn makes the peasants more manageable. Most of the problems that beset the general public stem from money, or the lack of it. But those who control unlimited amounts, and I’m talking billions or even trillions, have a whole different agenda. The only achievement these mega rich investors crave is power. Running the world and its citizens becomes their overriding priority. To achieve their ambitions they first need to sever the roots, lower moral and bring chaos, division and hardship to the masses. Well they are already succeeding in that. And rest assured there is a great deal more to come. All I can say is heaven help our gullible children. They are the unsuspecting, mostly unpaid, and utterly naïve army of these aspiring New World dictators. Sadly, by the time they realise, it will all be too late. Another Leapy rant? Listen, do you want to know a secret?
GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY DON’T you hate it, when someone tells you they have big n e w s , b u t t h e n g o o n t o s a y, they can’t say more? Well, this week, I’m that person. I have huge news. Massive. Life changing. Alas, I’m the one who c a n ’t s a y. K e e p i n g s e c re t s i s something I’ve been used to, for most of my adult life. In the past, I’ve written social diaries, for many newspapers and magazines. While the articles were mainly about my life, from time to time, I was asked to write about others. A task, I hope, I always treated fairly. As someone who’s been written about, rather a lot, I chose to report on the good that people were up to. I mean, if you’re going through a break-up, or divorce, does it really need to be splashed across the media? Certainly not. Over time, I found myself gathering so many secrets, and tit-bits of information about people. Sometimes, prominent - from politicians, to high-profile socialites. Sometimes, mind blowing stories. Other times, not so much. Mostly, I didn’t want the information, but I heard it nonetheless. Over the years, I found myself being approached by strangers in nightclubs at 4am, pleading that I never write about them. Some, sending bottles of Champagne to my table. Bottles that remained as untouched, as those who purchased them. The bottles, as they weren’t required. The purchasers, as I had no idea who they were. One Monday afternoon, an ‘unknown purchaser,’ approached my table in a restaurant. His point - to remind me how he’d sent ‘vintage Champagne’ at 4am, the previous Saturday. Before I realised, he purchased more, and joined myself and my friend, at our tiny table for two. Eventually, explaining, he was a “humble car salesman, who mixed in high society” (I kid you not). I drank his pop, and accepted his line, “please never write about
SECRETS: I hope I can keep mine. me.” Yet, here I am. After years of keeping, or probably, discarding secrets, I was a pro. However, as the week unfolded, I found it more difficult to keep my secret. At dinner, with my best friend, after ‘one for the road,’ I broke my silence. The response utter chaos. Then, endless questions. Questions, followed by Champagne. Yes, thankfully my secret, is good news. In fact, it’s the best. But enough about me. H o w a r e y o u h o l d i n g u p ? Yo u know, we’ve cleared over one hundred Corona Days. This evening, applaud yourself. Eat the pasta, raise a ‘Vera Lynn.’ Think of the last few months. Think of the good that’s come of our down time. Days when we managed to catch up on ourselves. Reading the books we received for Christmas, or spending real time with loved ones. It’s been a forced existence, but one I hope you’ve embraced. Tough times, can bring emotions we may have chosen to ignore. Sometimes, these feelings m a k e u s s t r o n g e r. I c a n s a y , emerging from this unusual era, I feel alive. If I can keep my secret for another week, well let’s see... We all have secrets, but as you know - bad news travels fast. For good news, one must wait.

Losing a family companion AROUND a month ago I had to say a very sad goodbye to my baby boy, a member of our family, my friend always at my side. It was a very difficult time anyway and added into that the current crisis, it was problematic to find a vet to do as we wanted and have his final moments with us at home after eating his favourite meal. In the end we had to take Chalkie to the clinic, both myself and my family were absolutely heartbroken as we had to say our goodbyes and choose who would be with him. For anyone that has lost a pet recently I wanted to share this poem with you.

Asleep in My Heart If I could have but one more day, We’d walk again our favourite way, Two friends together as before, But no, alas, you’re no more. No ball to throw, no bowl to fill, Your lead hangs limp, your toys lie still, No welcome home, no peaceful snore, An empty space upon the floor. If I could hold you once again, I’d kiss your head, I’d call your name, I’d whisper gently as we part… You’re safe asleep within my heart. Goodbye Baby boy.

A MAN who had been queueing since 5.30am for the 10am opening of IKEA insisted it was a nobrainer. “Last week we queued for three hours to get access to the council tip to chuck out all the junk and tat we wanted rid of during lockdown,” he moaned. “And now we need to queue for another three hours to replace it with more junk and tat.” Traffic jams and long queues built up, sometimes for hours, outside most of the UK’s recycling centres before they reopened for the first time since lockdown. And with the recent reopening in England of nonessential shops, you have to wonder just how many of those in the winding queues at big stores and retail parks - a 40 per cent increase in footfall moaned as well. But moaning about it all is just part of the habit. Sitting in your car on the M25 for five hours on a scorchingly hot Bank Holiday weekend going nowhere falls into the same category. You’d have imagined this confinement might have made those inclined to this sort of ritual reflect on things a bit.

Fear of Sharks and the ‘New Norman’ SUZANNE MANNERS MY local public swimming pool has reopened to much rejoicing from the flabby flat dwelling hoards, myself included. Even better is the new online appointment system which in one foul swoop eradicates the pre-swim stress of whether or not the lanes will be chock full. The system is very civilised, the swimmer chooses a date and time from the list. Your temperature is taken and off one plunges into the fresh chlorinated water of the 50-metre outdoor pool. Utter bliss! Swimming allows me to free my mind and to work through anxieties or problems in much the same way as a good long walk along the beach… except for one very clear difference... fear of sharks! As my thoughts eddy and
SWIMMING: Allows me to free my mind ... except for fear of sharks! flow, the lizard part of my brain sits up like an over caffeinated Meerkat and starts to search out dangers. I have a fear of deep water. I don't like not knowing what lurks beneath me. Now you might think that a public pool would allay those
fears. The rational part of my brain understands that there is no possible entry route for the much maligned prehistoric fish and that the likelihood of being attacked by one whilst floating on the water’s surface watching the bored soccaristas
watching the swimmers is nonexistent. However this does not prevent a momentary and vivid flash of the first scene of jaws hurling itself into my mind and having a good kick around. I remind myself that the dark shape beneath me is the change in tiles (although last week it was an old man wearing flippers and a mask!). Human beings are deftly fooled by their imaginations and mine is probably weirder than most and deeply affected by my late mother’s love of slasher movies when I was a child. I see dead people... and serial killers... and dodgy clowns and monsters and when wet, great hulking sharks with lots of teeth. This weird imagination of mine likes to sit on my shoulder and whisper sweet nothings into my ear at most inappropriate moments. My eyes glaze over and I smirk knowingly. I have been told it gives me a look of intense concentration
and deep thinking, whereas in reality I am probably pondering the likelihood of Batman ever asking Robin to marry him. I have an almost Pavlovian response to puns, malapropisms and misheard lyrics. The latest of which is the constant repetition of the phrase the new normal which my mind has now twisted into the ‘new Norman.’ As a consequence I have now invented a whole new person called Norman who has just had an epiphany and changed his entire outlook on life. In my world he has quit his job teaching Geography and is now lazing on a tropical island making friendship bracelets for the tourists. Norman is a new man and is a happy hippy. Good for Norman I think whenever I hear how this or that is the new normal. As a sideline BTW Norman makes necklaces from shark’s teeth. Toodle pip!

It’s all wrong in so many ways MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WE are now supposedly living in the new ‘normal’ but in fact the world has now officially gone bonkers. There are demonstrations all over the world supporting Black Lives Matter which, of course, is a legitimate, worthy and correct cause. But what doesn’t do these demos any good is the looting and violence that entails by, what looks to me, like outside influence. I saw many kids smashing windows and cars with skate boards. The perpetrators were all different races, but they didn’t seem to be there except to cause havoc. Then you have Trump getting troops using tear gas and rubber bullets to wade through a perfectly peaceful demonstration so that the lunatic Donny can have a photo taken with a Bible outside a boarded up church. We also have the situation where an episode of Fawlty Towers has been removed because of racism. Little Britain removed too for its racist overtones. No mention about the mockery of a dis-
abled person in a wheelchair. Racism is a terrible thing. I am Jewish and have had to deal with it my whole life. I still have an anti-Semitic neighbour that will make some remark every time our paths cross. A reference to ‘you lot’ or calling me a ‘4 by 2’ or a mention of camps. If you are going to get rid of racist stuff in the arts, you must get rid of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice because of the Shylock character. This was Hitler’s favourite play and was played on the radio two nights after Kristallnacht in 1938 to show how bad Jews were. Let’s not forget Charles Dickens. We have to get rid of Oliver Twist with Fagin portrayed as a thieving Jew. That’s racist isn’t it? Othello was played by Orson Welles with a black face. Let’s ban that too. And of course there are both versions of the Jazz Singer. The original has Al Jolson using black make up and the remake with Neil Diamond and his black face. The diabolical performance by Lord Laurence Olivier with his prosthetic nose and ridiculous accent. All wrong in so many ways. Of course, I don’t actually think any of this should be banned at all. I’m just trying to make a point. It never offended me. I watched it all and that’s where it ended. Even my anti-Semitic neighbour I just dismiss as an ignorant twunt.

I’m sorry I came into the house, madam, but I heard him choking.’ I got the marble lodged in my throat back in 1952 when I was five, and most likely would have died had the young African not acted so swiftly. South Africa, in that era, very few black male servants were allowed into white homes, but housemaids - or ‘girls’ as they were demeaningly called even if they were north of 50 were tolerated as they weren’t seen as a threat to white women. Seven years later I was rescued by an African who spotted me lying bleeding in the street. I’d been pelted with

ALL LIVES MATTER DEAR Euro Weekly, I don’t always agree with Leapy, but this week, he is right. Black lives matter, but so do the lives of people of any colour. The removal of statues of historical figures involved in the slave trade, only tells one side of the story. Black tribes, have rounded up and sold slaves from other tribes, for centuries, to Arabs, before whites became involved, so black people should take some of the blame for this deplorable exploitation of their own people. Have neither of them a job? They need to find work and rent a flat and put a roof over those boys heads otherwise they will end up losing the children too. A legal case could take months, maybe years and a lot of money. The priority is to take care of the family first and for this you need an income from work, a flat to live in and food on the table. Only then when you are secure can you go after the lawyer. BLM: Be respectful.
OUR VIEW The bigger picture DURING the Covid isolation period in Spain it was very, very rare to see homeless people on the street any longer. You would get to see the same old faces in doorways or outside supermarkets but they disappeared. When I eventually did see one, I was walking home from work as I am classed as an essential worker, there were two known homeless men and the police passed by without giving them a second glance. These men were local, they had no safety masks and am pretty sure they weren’t using hand sanitiser. What it made me think is that if there was the possibility of ridding the streets of homeless people and beggars now, during a health crisis, surely that means that the space is constantly available to shelter and provide for them. Local sports stadiums were said to be at capacity from sheltering them and various ordinary homeless shelters. Now, most of these people survive on handouts from the public and during the pandemic, there was also no public in the streets, no holidaymakers. How did they manage? I did fear that they would be an easy target for the virus and also that it sadly may kill a huge number of them off. However, I am happy to say that since the virus has begun to disappear, those faces have reappeared. A friend, I suppose you could call him, Jose Luis, survived through the virus, sleeping in the streets with nobody to collect coppers from, he had not been able to get a space in the local stadium. In talking to him recently it did bring up the point that if the government can provide them with basic food and the means to stay alive and shelter during a crisis, why can they not do this any other time when these people are suffering, ill and dying? Is it something that will change because of this realisation? Let’s hope so.

Some plastic razors will not allow you to shave with the grain in the same direction as your hair is growing. You will find that with a proper safety razor, you don’t have to shave over the area again and again. The main cause of irritation is too much pressure between the razor and your skin. Keep a light touch and hold back on the pressure over areas like shins, kneecaps, and ankles to avoid cuts. REMODELLING: Mayor of Torrevieja unveils new look Floating Museums. PREPARATIONS are well underway for the grand opening of Torrevieja’s Floating Museums following an investment of €37,000. A ‘comprehensive refurbishment’ of signs, posters, paintings throughout the museum esplanade, as well as the installation of hygienic and sanitary measures, were unveiled by town mayor, Eduardo Dolon, this week. All of the posters, explaining rules and timetables, and of all the exhibition pieces at the Floating Museums, are labelled in Spanish and English, with a new feature being the installation of a photocall in the entrance
area of the submarine. Likewise, all the sunshades have been replaced by the waiting areas for the Patrol boat, the S-61 Submarine ‘Dolphin,’ as well as at the school and rest area. And for the first time the museum has a total of 21 boats of all types (navy, fishing and sporting) on display for visits. The mayor said the remodelling was much-needed after “several years without maintenance” and said the Floating Museums will be open within the next fortnight, from 9.30am to 2pm.
