AFTER almost 100 days in the State of Alarm, months of fear, uncertainty and confinement across Spain have come to an end and the Costas have reawakened with a new energy and determination to build a better new normal. After such a long period of inactivity, flights are landing in Spain without quarantine, there’s movement across borders and provinces, children can play in parks and the economy can start to get back on its feet. There has never been a more crucial time to take
the bull by the horns and MAKE the future happen. The global pandemic thrust the country into an unprecedented era that has hit the Costas hard, but now they are braced and ready to welcome locals and tourists alike. The regions are awash with excellent restaurants, bars and cafes offering a typically friendly Spanish service. And local shops and businesses will now be relying on us to help them rebuild and stay afloat, hoping that money that wasn’t spent during shut down will rejuvinate trade.

WE did it. We followed the instructions of our President, Pedro Sanchez, regardless of our political inclinations and by doing what we should we went from being one of the world’s most dangerous countries to one of the safest. Regardless of nationality, we came together and did everything asked of us, living for 98 days in a world that only weeks before we didn’t know existed. We closed our businesses, locked up our children, shielded our elderly and vulnerable, facing a frightening world of social distancing with remarkable dignity in our masks and gloves. Each night at 8pm we applauded those keeping us safe and we formed amazing self-sacrificing groups who cooked, baked, shopped and delivered for others with no thought for themselves. We showed tolerance and compassion as we queued for anything and everything and if we worried about our families’ health, finances and futures, we
worried in silence. As businesspeople we, too, suffered financially but as an essential business we had to continue despite high overheads and little income. Now, after 98 days, the State of Alarm has been lifted and our lifeline to businesses along the coasts of Spain has been restored. “Welcome, we have missed you, and we need you,” we say to returning visitors because we might not be tourist-based but our clients are. We, too want a busy landscape of bars, restaurants, beaches and hotels where visitors receive the best service they have ever had. We want them to buy properties, bring their skill sets here and their families. We want them to rebook in August and October and to come back at Christmas. More than anything else we want our wonderful business community to stop suffering. We don’t want to see any more closures, just busy and contented owners who are being rewarded
for their patience and dedication in preventing Covid-19 from robbing more lives while their own were put on hold. As a business community we have weathered recessions, but nothing like that of 2008 and no sooner did we emerge than we were confronted first by Brexit and then by Covid-19. Life will never be the same again, but we are convinced that doesn’t mean this year can’t be turned around. It will be hard and worrying at times, but we are made of tough stuff, us expats, and as pioneers and entrepreneurs we know we shall get through. Good luck to every single business-owner out there: we wish you every success in the New Now. And we are sure that by the end of the year we will be toasting together, celebrating because we all made it through. Good luck, everyone, and remember: we WILL do this!

New face CAMPELLO mayor, Juanjo Berenguer, and Public Safety councillo,r Rafa Galvañ, welcomed the new lieutenant who now heads the local Guardia Civil headquarters. Identified only as Daniel in official handouts, he replaces Lieutenant Cordero who has been transferred to Alicante City after many years of service in his hometown.
Summer nights BENIDORM’S cycle of open-air concerts, Benidor m Summer Nights, begins this month and continues throughout August. They will be held in the Aiguera park’s Julio Iglesias Auditorium, with room for between 400 and 800 people, announced Events and Festivals councillor Jesus Carrobles. “Festivals and musical event are without doubt a hallmark of Benidorm’s tourist offer, which is why it’s important to maintain them while adapting to the new circumstances and guaranteeing safety,” he said. “This new for mat will reduce the number of spectators, but not the quality,” Carrobles insisted.
“When planning these events we have taken all health directives into account while guaranteeing the safety of the public, employees and artists without forgoing the quality and comfort of great nights filled with music and humour.” The councillor went on to explain that everybody would have their temperature taken before accessing the auditorium. There will be no bar service, Carrobles added, although waiters would be on hand to take orders via an App. As well as the usual sanitising hand gel, the entire precinct will be disinfected before and after each event, he said.

Clean, green energy BY 2030 at least 90 per cent of the energy produced by the Valencian Community should be clean and green. This is the Generalitat’s goal, said regional president Ximo Puig, who recently visited Jijona where the Valencian Community’s largest solar plant is located. In July, the Consell the Generalitat’s Cabinet - will introduce legislation removing the red tape that has discouraged firms from setting up more photovoltaic installations like Jijona’s, Puig revealed. Multinational X-Elio persisted in constructing the Jijona plant despite a complex process requiring the participation of eight sections belonging to three different Generalitat departments, the

station - with funds provided by the multinational - so that it may connect to the main grid. A second phase is in the pipeline, with work expected to begin at the end of next year.
Between them, the two solar plants covering an area of 114 hectares will produce enough green energy for 19,000 homes while preventing emissions of 42,460 tons of carbon dioxide.
Students revise in peace THE study room at La Vila’s municipal library has reopened, reverting to its July and August timetable of 8.30am-2pm. Local students again have somewhere to revise for their exams in peace after the months of
lockdown, although the study room now holds only three-quarters of its normal capacity. With the end of the State of Alarm, the library’s multimedia room is also open from 8.30am-2pm, again with
three-quarters of the usual number of people. Computers may be used for a maximum of 30 minutes and gloves and masks are obligatory in both rooms.

THE U3A Marina Baixa Wine and Dine Group are back in business. After many weeks of inactivity, 18 members of the Wine and Dine Group met for a delicious meal in Albir, while observing the

Damped down PROTECCION CIVIL volunteers in Alcoy are locating wooded zones on the outskirts of the city with large numbers of poplars. Together with forest firefighters and fire-prevention units they are hosing down accumulations of the poplars’ inflammable seeds that are an added threat in an area where forest fire is always a risk.
THE Teulada-Moraira and Benitachell Water Consortium allocated €300,000 for repairs to the network that supplies individual properties. After eight years of inactivity and deteriorated infrastructure in need of repairs, the consortium’s board of directors agreed that 68 per cent of the €300,000 would go to TeuladaMoraira and 32 per cent to Benitachell. The division was based on the number of properties in each municipality, the length of its distribution network and the needs of each town. “This agreement marks a ‘before’ and ‘after’ for the consor-
tium,” said Benitachell’s mayor Miguel Angel Garcia and Teulada-Moraira mayor Rosa Vila, the consortium’s president and vice-president. The pact means that each town hall will now be independent and can act individually and rapidly when and where necessary. Garcia and Vila emphasised the need for a reliable network, especially for two municipalities whose populations soar during the high season. They also drew attention to the good relationship between both town halls and their willingness to work together to invest in improvements each year.

Beach outing marred by fall A FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Russian was injured as he fell while using a cliff path to reach Cala Del Testos in Benitachell. He had come with his family from Carcaixent (Valencia) where they live to spend the day at the beach. The Moraig beach is still closed for repairs to damage caused by Storm Gloria last January and the Russian family, like others visiting Benitachell, opted for the harder-to-access Dels Testos cove which must be reached by a steep path. Benitachell’s Local Police were first on the scene and gave the boy first aid before he was airlifted by a helicopter belonging to the Alicante Consortium of Fire Brigades and transferred to hospital.

Summer parking THE town hall of Altea announced that the usual summer parking timetable now applies in the Old Town. Until September 15, parking there is restricted daily between 7pm to 3am, principally affected Calle Sant Josep, Calle Sant Miquel and the Portal Vell. Holders of a resident’s card may drive in the Old Town during these hours and Traffic councillor Miguel de la Hoz reminded residents to renew expired cards. Poll points the way JALON residents voted in an informal poll to redesign the town centre, giving priority to pedestrians. More than 400 people took part online or in writing in Jalon Participa 2020 and the majority were in favour of creating a green space in the Plaza de la Iglesia without traffic and priority for those on foot. They also said they would prefer Calle la Vir-
gen to remain as it is. Regarding the situation of the vulnerable older generation more help at home was required, according to those looking after people with disabilities. Most needed more than three hours of attention from carers and the aspect which most concerned them was personal hygiene. “The large of number of participants demon-
strates their concerns regarding these topics that are so important to Jalon’s future,” said the local mayor Joan Miquel Garces. CCTV giveaway THE Guardia Civil detained a 37-year-old man in Villajoyosa, accused of breaking into four homes and stealing televisions. He was also charged with taking other objects including credit cards which he used for purchases in local shops, but investigators finally identified him after he took a €2,000 bicycle from a campsite, unaware that this was recorded on CCTV cameras.

Private path had to go ROSA MARIA CASTELLVI, Baroness de Torres-Torres, owns the much-photographed house perched over Javea’s Cala Sardinera. The house has been used as a backdrop for Dior and Zara videos and adverts amongst others but four years ago the town hall ordered the baroness to remove a set of steps built into the cliff face that leads to the cove below. These have now been removed, together with a septic tank and paving installed at another of her properties, an old fisherman’s cottage just above the beach that is used as a summerhouse. The private path, bordered with railings and lighting, was installed on land covered by a protection order and could not be legalised owing to the zone’s environmental and scenic value, the town hall explained. An application must be made to coastal authorities, Costas, to legalise the cottage although this is unlikely to be met with a demolition order, municipal sources revealed.

An atypical San Juan
SPAIN might have entered New Normal mode, but this year’s San Juan Night celebrations were very different. Practically all Costa Blanca town halls closed their beaches on the night of June 23-24 to prevent the huge crowds that gather each year, re-enacting old rituals to bring good fortune, ensure fertility and guarantee good crops.
This year there were no bonfires to jump on the beaches of Campello, Villajoyosa, Finestrat, Benidor m, Albir, Altea, Moraira, Benitachell and Denia, no jumping over waves three, seven or nine times depending on the locality - for luck and happiness. There were three exceptions on norther n Costa Blanca beaches, as Calpe, Benissa
and Javea allowed the public to visit the beaches, while respecting social distancing, although bonfires and fiestas were still vetoed. In Javea’s case beach fiestas are not a custom, but a watch was kept instead in the Old Quarter, as in other Valencian Community towns where San Juan bonfires are lit and the old rituals observed.
More demand than space

Second-best COVID-19 has interrupted fieldwork at Alcoy’s El Salt paleolithic site. The site is located at the back of the villa where the Alcoy-born poet Juan GilAlbert spent each summer and excavations have been carried out there every August for more than 30 years. El Salt finds indicate that the site was occupied between 45,000 and 60,000 years ago but although excavations are ruled out, co-director of the project, assisted by three pupils will study and catalogue finds inside Gil-Albert’s villa, which is now municipally-owned.

Reflections on lockdown THE Calpe U3A committee is asking members to contribute their experiences during lockdown. “They may have funny stories of things that happened to them or their family,” said Calpe U3A’s vice-president Wendy Down. “What exercises did they do to keep fit and active, what TV films did they watch, what books did they read? Or there could be sad moments to share,” Wendy explained. “Poems celebrating the Spanish health service or the NHS, something inspirational or, conversely, something depressing. Jokes, emotions, feelings, the good days, the bad days. The ways they found to cope with lockdown. Others will have been taking photos they can share.” It is not necessary to be a great writer, Wendy emphasised. “Just put it down in your own words. more than 10 years. As life returns to normal the regional government is gradually resuming interrupted projects, and the Architecture and Rehabilitation department recently confirmed that it will restore the old building, which needs a new roof as well as underpinning.
PATROLLING Guardia Civil officers from El Vergel received an urgent call to attend a house fire in Els Poblets. Arriving at the semi-detached property they found the occupants, a mother and her son of six, in the garden. The fire had started in the kitchen, she explained, and despite the dense smoke, the officers managed to enter the house to turn off the electricity at the mains. The electrical panel was located in the kitchen near the origin of the fire, a frying pan full of oil that had been left on the lighted hob, they said afterwards. Re-entering with a garden hose, the Guardia Civil officers found that the flames had by then damaged the cooker hood and kitchen units, but had the fire under control before the arrival of firefighters and the Local Police.

THE Public Health councillor of Campello Rafa Galvañ revealed that the town hall is acquiring 45,000 face masks. As it will not always be possible for people to maintain the 1.5-metre safety distance required by the ‘new normality,’ masks will be given to all the local population, Galvañ explained.

risks, Galvañ said. A further 4,000 reusable face masks for children will be sent to local schools once these reopen. It has yet to be decided how best to distribute the masks, Galvañ admitted, although the town hall has ruled out the door-to-door deliveries that have caused problems in other municipalities.

So it continues today and so it will remain until a Borbon king apologies to the Socarrats (The Burnt) for his ancestor’s infamy.

THE bells of Sant Josep church in central Gandia recently woke nearby residents in the middle of the night. Like most urban Spanish churches, the bells are silenced between 10pm and 7pm but recently began tolling at 2.30am and continued non-stop for the next 30 minutes. People living nearby advised Gandia’s Local Police as some were con-

The bells! The bells! cerned that they could be hearing an alarm triggered by an attempted theft. The Local Police contacted the parish priest, Fr Priscilio Ruiz, who found that a fault in the church clock had affected
the computer programme controlling the bells. He called a technician who had to climb a ladder to the top of the belfry to silence the tolling by cutting the cable to the computer-linked mecha-
nism controlling Sant Josep’s bells. Fr Ruiz said later to the local Spanish media that this was the first time anything similar had occurred during all his years as Sant Josep’s parish priest.
Post-lockdown millionaire’s golf PEGO GOLF SOCIETY returned to Oliva Nova Golf after the longest layoff ever, as the last meeting was held on March 10. The course was in superb condition, as was to be expected with no-one playing for nearly two months, added to which travel restrictions prevented the majority of Pego members from travelling to Oliva, as most live in Alicante Province. The lucky few who were able to play experienced ‘millionaire’s golf’ as the course was

Heartbreaking Saving seals in Santander ON Thursday June 18, the Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE) reported that the abandonment of dogs in the country has increased by 25 per cent since the start of the de-escalation period. Spain is one of the worst countries in Europe regarding the abandonment of pets, as each year 140,000 cats and dogs are left
on the streets. The RSCE communicated that at the end of May about 2,000 dogs were abandoned in Spain. This period coincides with the first two weeks of the de-escalation plan as well as the emergence of summer and the end of the State of Alarm. The RSCE warned of a 50 per cent rise in the
Pedal Boat rescue WHEN a report was received by the volunteer fire brigade in Tossa de Mar that a diver was in difficulty and needed assistance, no proper rescue boat was immediately available. The diver could only be reached by sea and the firemen decided that his health was more important than their dig-
nity so they borrowed two kayaks and a tourist pedal boat to get to him. Happily, they were able to offer basic medical assistance until a rescue boat arrived at which time he was transferred via the pedal boat and then taken by emergency services to a medical centre for

THE Anima Naturalis charity and pressure group in Spain has taken up the rights of seals, sea lions and penguins in a mini zoo in the city of Santander. Many have been shocked by pictures of injured sea lions and penguins and in at least one case a dead seal wrapped in a rubbish bag whilst another is covered in moss floating
in stagnant water. Following their campaign, the matter is now before the Santander Council and the charity will be undertaking a review of the birds and sea creatures with a view to proving that they are neglected so that the animals may be removed to safe accommodation and the mini zoo closed down.

A FAMILY of four who has been living in Spain for five years and currently resides just outside Barcelona have been left in dire straits and let down by the very system they put their faith in. Euro Weekly News spoke directly with the couple who cannot be named for legal reasons. They are a mixedrace gay couple who have two sons, now seven and eight, broth-
e r s b y m o t h e r, w h o were adopted seven years ago. The eldest is also of mixed race and they both have only ever known Spanish life and attended school in Spain, and this is their home. The couple are urgently trying to raise funds in order to keep a roof over their heads. Unfortunately, they have been left penniless by a corrupt lawyer who they trusted to manage their legal affairs with re-
gards to a legal battle against homophobia, racism and bullying. When moving to Spain they followed all legal steps - registering residency, paying taxes, putting their sons into a local school. However, a short while ago they realised that the lawyer they had hired had not filed any paperwork as requested and, on his own admission, had been negligent in legal cases and, as such, is responsible for the family’s massive loss. Whilst also trying to set up a business in Spain, with socalled aid from the same lawyer, they lost all of their financial security and home, along with all family possessions without notice. Unfortunately, since then, they have had to rely on the support of

friends and local charities to keep a roof over their heads. The couple have sold everything possible and are now down to their last week of free accommodation before being put on to the streets.
“We have tried all angles to get help and we have run dry, as it seems our official residency was not filed properly by our lawyer and, as such, this has meant we have no support from the Catalan
gover nment even though they have helped with food vouchers, school fees etc for which we are so grateful,” said one of the partners. Their friend Marina has set up a GoFundMe page ‘Support a family with legal costs and homelessness’ to raise money to support them regarding accommodation and legal fees. Right of preferential purchase of neighbouring land that they can purchase adjacent land if it has been sold to a third party. To explain, if you buy
or sell what is considered rustic land in Spain, direct neighbours will have the right to purchase the property from the new b u y e r, a s l o n g a s t h e requirements mentioned in Spanish Civil Code (Cc) are met, in the article 1523 first paragraph: “The owners of the adjacent lands will also have the right to retract when it comes to the sale of a rustic property whose size does not exceed one hectare.” Therefore, the conditions to have this right to obtain the neighbour’s property, are: 1. That he must be the owner of the adjacent land or plot.
2. The property transferred must be rustic and must not exceed 10,000 square metres. 3. This right may not be exercised, if the plots are separated by streams, ditches, ravines, roads and other apparent rights in benefit to other plots. Tourists are gearing up to return to Spain this summer, but the Balearic government has now announced that clubs will not reopen for the 2020 season. A report from Spanish press suggests clubs will remain shuttered for this year’s season, and possibly into 2021. Clubs were initially given the green light to open this month from Spain’s national government during the

CORREOS, the national courier service has launched it’s first-ever LGBTQ stamp in commemoration of Pride month which features a subtle homage to the Costa del Sol. The month of June is typically referred to as ‘pride,’ a month in which Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer people celebrate their history and community. The official Pride Day is celebrated on June 28 and therefore Correos has joined the rest of the world in celebrating this event. Will UK assets invite a bigger tax bill after Brexit? While Brexit itself will not affect the double tax agreements that determine which country has the right to tax expatriates, two key changes are set to happen from 2021 that may change your tax treatment. First, UK assets will no longer be EU/European Economic Area (EEA) assets. In some cases, this means they may stop receiving favourable tax treatment abroad. Second, the UK government will no longer be bound by EU freedom of movement rules for capital, giving them more scope to tax nonresidents. Even without Brexit, once you are living abroad it is sensible to review whether holding on to UK assets is still in your best interests. UK property The UK has gradually increased the tax burden on property for overseas residents. For example, after years without capital gains tax liability, ‘non-resident capital gains tax’ (NRCGT) started applying to nonUK residents selling UK residential

The UK government could easily extend this to EU transfers once no longer bound by the bloc’s rules. If you

ONCE LOTTERY: Mayor Toni Perez tries his luck. THE ONCE lottery has now returned to Spain’s streets. Benidorm’s mayor, Toni Perez recently visited the newly-opened ONCE stands, accompanied by Anabel Morente, director of the local branch. Perez drew attention to the commendable work that the ONCE carries out to make life easier for the visually impaired. Perez also drew attention to the ongoing close collaboration between the town hall and the organisation to bring total accessibility to local streets, citing the pedestrian crossings that are specially designed not only for those with sight problems, but also those with hearing difficulties.
THE Education department of Benidorm is organising a Summer Educational Support Programme (PAEV) for 56 primary pupils. “This will assist children who need extra help to be well-placed when they start the next school year,” said Education councillor Maite Moreno. This was doubly important after schools were closed owing to the pandemic, she said. “Having received the new directives from the Health authorities, we de-
cided to go ahead with this programme although it will be different from other years owing to the ‘new normal’ caused by Covid19.” Groups of between eight and 10 children split into two morning shifts at the Ausias March school to guarantee social distancing. As well as Maths, Spanish, Valenciano and English, there will be help with study techniques, verbal and mathematical reasoning and attention games, Moreno announced.

Albir - Alfaz NEWS New life for unwanted devices THE Norwegian School Costa Blanca donated five laptops to Alfaz’s Banco de Dispositivos Informaticos (IT Devices Bank). The laptops are ready to use and four of the school’s 260 pupils recently presented them to Alfaz’s Education councillor, Dolores Albero, and Other Nationalities councillor, Martine Mertens. They were accompanied by the school’s director Jorid Skinnehaugen Myhre and Robert Amine, who serviced the computers. Alfaz’s IT Bank was created to cover the needs of new teaching methods that emerged during the State of Alarm and required pupils studying at home to have computers or tablets. Recycling computers, tablets and phones by recycling instead of throwing them away also makes social and sustainable use of them, Dolores Albero said. RESIDENTS from Calpe can help to decide the future of unbuilt land classified for development. The town hall’s Territory councillor Juan Manuel Del Pino intends to ask the local population if they want these last remaining plots to be declassified and protected in a break with the municipality’s development policies over the last 40 years.
An official communique from the town hall explained that between now and September, they will have the opportunity to give their opinions regarding the Rafol I, Rafol II, Pla Feliu I, Pla Feliu II, Garduix I and Garduix II. The enquiry will be open to residents, collectives, institutions, local political parties and the landowners, municipal sources said.

Questions Firefighters at the ready answered TEULADA-MORAIRA’S SIT information and processing offices dealt with more than 2,800 enquiries between June 1 and 14. Closed during Phase Zero and Phase One of the State of Alarm de-escalation programme, all SIT employees returned to the offices in Moraira and Teulada on entering Phase Two. Although most enquiries were still dealt with over the phone, there were 450 by-appointment personal consultations at La Senieta and Avenida Santa Catalina offices in Moraira and Teulada. Most queries were related to the municipal Padron, practically all of them from non-Spanish residents. Others wanted information regarding electronic signatures and grants or official aid as well as general information relating to the municipality.

VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS: Carry out great work during fires and floods. THE Balcon al Mar Volunteer Firefighters began their summer firewatching and fire-prevention duties in Javea’s southern areas. The group, attached to the Vecinos Hispanofilos Association (IVHS), starts the season with new volunteers as well as improved vehicles together with more equipment and material. They will now keep a fire watch each night with an operative on call at their headquarters 24 hours a day, ready to mobilise the firefighters when needed.
Javea mayor Jose Chulvi, accompanied by Public Safety councillor Pepa Gisbert recently visited the volunteers to thank them for their “great work” not only in forest fire prevention but also during floods. Owing to the growing frequency of emergencies resulting from bad weather, the volunteers have acquired specific equipment enabling them to remove fallen branches and trees as well as water pumps and waders for bailing out accumulated water.
Councillors set an example PARTIDO POPULAR councillors in Teulada-Moraira donated 50 per cent of their town hall salaries during the Covid-19 crisis. “The Teulada-Moraira PP chose to donate to Caritas, as it helps many
of the people in our municipality who are having a hard time and it is active both in Teulada and Moraira,” a party communique announced. “We made this donation of more than €2,000
because politicians should also play their part financially. Deeds are more important than words and those in public office should be the first set an example,” the party statement continued.
Beach plan revealed THE town hall of Javea is limiting the number of people on its beaches this summer. Totals for Javea’s principal beaches have been based on their dimensions, Beaches councillor Toni Miragal revealed. Assuming that each person occupies four square metres of sand, a maximum of 2,000 will be allowed on the Arenal beach, he said. The Grava beach will hold 225 people, with 200 on Granadella and 150 on the Portitxol-Barraca beach. There are no plans for a reservations system and beaches occupation will be based on time of arrival, controlled by the security guards engaged by the town hall. As in previous years, barriers give access to Granadella and Portitxol but beachgoers visiting bars and restaurants will be allowed through even when the beaches are full if there are sufficient parking spaces. There will be no trenet tourist train down to the Granadella as the limited number of beachgoers means that there should be no parking problems Miragall said. He stressed that these quotas could be modified once the town hall sees how occupation evolves or according to directives from the Health authorities.

Facelift for Health centre reopens historic building THE regional government included Javea’s Casa de los Xolbi in grants for rehabilitating urban buildings of historic or cultural value. Once located inside the town walls at the Roques, Loreto and Escola crossroads, the exterior of the 15th century building which is now municipal property, remains relatively unchanged despite 18th and 19th century modifications. Rehabilitating the building, parts of which are in a precarious condition, will cost €1 million. The Generalitat’s Housing and Bioclimatic Architecture department is drawing up plans for restoring Casa de los Xolbi which should be completed this year. The next step will involve obtaining 2021 Budget commitment for the project which, as this is more than €500,000, will be co-financed by Javea Town Hall.
MORAIRA’S health centre reopened at the beginning of this week. It was closed shortly after the State of Alarm decree and Marina Salud, which provides the Marina Alta’s healthcare, announced that it has reopened, while scrupulously observing all health measures required by the national and regional governments. The Moraira centre now opens Mondays, Wednes-
days and Fridays between 8am and 8pm, although the paediatrician is based in Teulada only. Appointments must always be made beforehand on 965 739 080. This same timetable applies to emergencies but patients requiring emergency attention outside these hours should go to the Teulada health centre where there is a 24-hour A & E service.
Lights Action Sound POSSIBLY what it takes for Javea Players to put on a performance is not always fully appreciated by the audience. One of their Sound team has retired, so the Players are looking for a replacement technician. “Do you have any experience? Outbreak CORONA ALERT: Traveller from Madrid to Bolivia known as an ‘index case.’ A SMALL outbreak is being investigated in Murcia which, according to the Ministry of Health, has stemmed from a traveller who journeyed from Madrid to Bolivia. Although there are only 11 people who have tested positive in the province of Murcia, there are currently around 50 people in quarantine. All of these people share a common thread: they all had contact with this man who travelled from Bolivia; this is known as an ‘index case.’ The Epidemiology branch of the Ministry of Health has detected that 11 peo-
ple who tested positive had come into contact with the traveller from Bolivia. An additional 50 individuals have been placed in quarantine and are being followed up by primary care physicians although the first cases were detected as early as June 17. In Murcia, there are currently 87 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus. Amongst other issues, the arrival of imported cases is very troubling and even more so as 100 international flights landed on Sunday June 21 in Spain, marking the first day into the ‘new normality.’

Company Reducing carbon emissions faked likes FACEBOOK has announced that it has not only banned the Madridbased MGP25 Cyberint Services for placing likes on Instagram accounts for profit but will also be taking action against the company. It believes that the company created a special computer tool to gen erate likes in order to boost interest in the clients it represented. A spokesperson for Facebook said “The defendant’s service was designed to evade Instagram’s restrictions against fake engagement by mimicking the Instagram official app in the way that it connected to our systems.”
THE John Lewis Partnership, which owns department stores and Wait rose supermarkets in the UK has an nounced that it is stepping up its commitment to reducing carbon emissions by building a dedicated biomethane gas filling station. This will enable its largest heavy goods vehicles to use a lowcarbon alternative to diesel and in addition, it plans to stop using fossil fuels across its entire 4,800 strong trans port fleet by 2030. The new biomethane gas filling station will be built in conjunction with Air Liquide and will open at the
Partnership’s head office in Bracknell in December 2020, making it the business’s first onsite gas filling sta tion. It will facilitate the conversion of the Bracknell Waitrose fleet to biomethane and complement gas filling stations already in use near to John Lewis and Waitrose regional distribution centres in Leyland, Lan cashire, and in Northampton. Serving some 120 Waitrose heavy goods vehicles, the lorries will run on biomethane made from food waste and food processing waste materials rather than diesel which will reduce CO2 emissions by 80 per cent.
Over the next seven years, it is es timated the Bracknell site alone will save over 70,000 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to the carbon footprint produced by over 13,000 UK house holds. Another addition will be the introduction of 1,750 electric vans alongside 750 refrigerated trailers converted from diesel to electric dri ve. In addition, the Partnership’s 1,300 strong car fleet will become 100 per cent electric and any remain ing vehicles that could not be con verted to biomethane or electric will use hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biodiesel.

for the extension of the State of Alarm, the prime minister had agreed to pledge €2.5 billion in ICO (state) bank guarantees. Most of the balance of €1.75 billion is also being made as loans so the tourism sector will simply increase its debt and hope for the best.

It will all be too late
AS you read this, thousands of black men, women and children are being slaughtered and enslaved in Nigeria. Black genocide is still a daily occurrence in many parts of the world and black youngsters are being killed on our streets in ever increasing numbers. All in all it is an appalling and utterly tragic situation. But why are we seeing no demonstrations concerning these issues? Where are all the marchers and BLM protests? What’s happened to all the black leaders appearing in the media, decrying the situation and urging governments to ‘do something’? Personally I only discovered most of these facts with research. So can anyone please enlighten me why it is that black lives only appear to really matter when members of the white community are involved? It simply doesn’t make sense; unless there is some ulterior motive afoot! Ah well, only time and tide will answer that question. What is more worrying is the amount of air time the main stream media gives to those who support these ‘causes.’ On the social media, over the last few weeks, numerous, often extremely articulate members of the black commu-

nity have appeared, decrying the BLM movement and its methods. Intelligent black and ethnic men and women of all ages have been putting forward strong arguments as to why they actually don’t feel oppressed at all and affirming that all opportunities are there for both black and white, with many praising the system and the societies that have made them successful. Why don’t we see
any of these people on the main stream? Why aren’t some of them given the same amount of air time that the decriers and dissenters receive? Well I’ll tell you why, the left wing media are the pawns and propaganda outlets of the money men; the true shadowy manipulators of the societies we live in. It is also the reason that large conglomerates, often inexplicably seem to have leftist
leanings. This is because left wing policies higher benefits, nationalisation etc, encourage people to rely more on the state, which in turn makes the peasants more manageable. Most of the problems that beset the general public stem from money, or the lack of it. But those who control unlimited amounts, and I’m talking billions or even trillions, have a whole different agenda. The only achievement these mega rich investors crave is power. Running the world and its citizens becomes their overriding priority. To achieve their ambitions they first need to sever the roots, lower moral and bring chaos, division and hardship to the masses. Well they are already succeeding in that. And rest assured there is a great deal more to come. All I can say is heaven help our gullible children. They are the unsuspecting, mostly unpaid, and utterly naïve army of these aspiring New World dictators. Sadly, by the time they realise, it will all be too late. Another Leapy rant? Losing a family companion AROUND a month ago I had to say a very sad goodbye to my baby boy, a member of our family, my friend always at my side. It was a very difficult time anyway and added into that the current crisis, it was problematic to find a vet to do as we wanted and have his final moments with us at home after eating his favourite meal. In the end we had to take Chalkie to the clinic, both myself and my family were absolutely heartbroken as we had to say our goodbyes and choose who would be with him. For anyone that has lost a pet recently I wanted to share this poem with you.

BARRY DUKE THE shriek my mother emitted when she saw her blue-in-the-face darling dangling upside down and being thwacked on the back by a huge black hand set all the china in the house rattling. Filled with fury and fear, mum screamed at John, the family gardener: ‘What the hell are you doing?’ At that point a marble shot out of my gullet, ricocheted off the floor and put a neat little hole in a nearby window. ‘I just saved Barry’s life,’ mumbled John as he backed out of the hallway. I’m sorry I came into the house, madam, but I heard him choking.’ I got the marble lodged in my throat back in 1952 when I was five, and most likely would have died had the young African not acted so swiftly. His apology for entering the house was understandable. In South Africa, in that era, very few black male servants were allowed into white homes, but housemaids or ‘girls’ as they were demeaningly called even if they were north of 50 were tolerated as they weren’t seen as a threat

BLM: This is important to me. to white women. Seven years later I was rescued by an African who spotted me lying bleeding in the street. I’d been pelted with rocks by a gang of white Bibletoting churchgoers - not kids, but adults! - who assumed that, because I’d been spotted near a synagogue, I was Jewish. My rescuer snatched me up and, cradling me in his arms, carried me to the local hospital. Taken together, these incidents instilled in me a great respect and affection for Africans while all around me people loathed them. Sadly, just as gay people were forced into self-hatred and fear by ignorance and bigotry, many blacks came to regard their colour as a vicious trick of nature. Blue’ (1929): What did I do to be so black and blue … I’m white inside but that don’t help my case / My only sin is in my skin … Black Lives Matter is important to me because I have seen first-hand what happens when people believe the opposite. But I think the destruction of statues of long-dead imperialists and slave-traders is a dangerous distraction and plays directly into the hands of fascists. What needs toppling are living people using their positions of privilege and power to please white supremacists - evil egomaniacs like Trump who had BLM protesters tear-gassed so he could stand outside a church to brandish a book which has caused humanity more suffering than any other: the ‘holy’ Bible.

ALL LIVES MATTER DEAR Euro Weekly, I don’t always agree with Leapy, but this week, he is right. Black lives matter, but so do the lives of people of any colour. The removal of statues of historical figures involved in the slave trade, only tells one side of the story. Black tribes, have rounded up and sold slaves from other tribes, for centuries, to Arabs, before whites became involved, so black people should take some of the blame for this deplorable exploitation of their own people. Historical events, cannot be changed, but also cannot be erased, we should all move on in mutual respect for each other. Yours Sincerely Ed Naughton

Have neither of them a job? They need to find work and rent a flat and put a roof over those boys heads otherwise they will end up losing the children too. A legal case could take months, maybe years and a lot of money. The priority is to take care of the family first and for this you need an income from work, a flat to live in and food on the table. Only then when you are secure can you go after the lawyer. BLM: Be respectful.
OUR VIEW The bigger picture DURING the Covid isolation period in Spain it was very, very rare to see homeless people on the street any longer. You would get to see the same old faces in doorways or outside supermarkets but they disappeared. When I eventually did see one, I was walking home from work as I am classed as an essential worker, there were two known homeless men and the police passed by without giving them a second glance. These men were local, they had no safety masks and am pretty sure they weren’t using hand sanitiser. What it made me think is that if there was the possibility of ridding the streets of homeless people and beggars now, during a health crisis, surely that means that the space is constantly available to shelter and provide for them. Local sports stadiums were said to be at capacity from sheltering them and various ordinary homeless shelters. Now, most of these people survive on handouts from the public and during the pandemic, there was also no public in the streets, no holidaymakers. How did they manage? I did fear that they would be an easy target for the virus and also that it sadly may kill a huge number of them off. However, I am happy to say that since the virus has begun to disappear, those faces have reappeared. A friend, I suppose you could call him, Jose Luis, survived through the virus, sleeping in the streets with nobody to collect coppers from, he had not been able to get a space in the local stadium. In talking to him recently it did bring up the point that if the government can provide them with basic food and the means to stay alive and shelter during a crisis, why can they not do this any other time when these people are suffering, ill and dying? Is it something that will change because of this realisation? Let’s hope so.

bias, the interviews conducted on BBC breakfast TV have been deeply embarrassing, acceptance of everything the government ministers have said and questioning nothing. Regarding the Panorama programme, I found it very interesting and nostalgic that a government could count a pair of protective gloves as two pieces of PPE, it took me back to the time I used to watch on our black and white TV with my late parents the Fugitive on Sunday night where Dr Richard Kimble searched for a one-armed man every episode to prove his innocence. It would be informative if Leapy Lee could list all the things the Johnson government has done right to combat this pandemic, may I be bold enough to suggest a rather short column. It’s Pride Month
An Open Book J U N E i s o ff i c i a l l y P r i d e Month. A time to promote equality, awareness and visibility to the LGBTQ community. As we are living in the era of the coronavirus, traditional Pride events have been inevitably cancelled. It’s made me reflect on my own experiences of attending Pride events and what we all can do to commemorate and advocate this important month. Pride events are often seen as a celebration when in fact they are a form of activism. The genesis of Pride Month was a consequence of the Stonewall Riots. On June 28, 1969, members of the LGBT community at the Stonewall Inn finally reacted following a police raid. It became a seminal moment, spear heading the gay rights movement. When I think back to my first Pride event in 2005, I was

aware of its historical importance, I was part of an LGBT youth group in Manchester. Our job was to design a float that would subsequently be part of the Manchester Pride march. We were an overzealous group. A fearless tight unit. We were given a workspace to use at the Manchester Art Gallery to design our float under the supervision of one of
the gallery workers. If I remember rightly, he was a bit of an interloper and often told us off for having our music on too loud. Despite having been teenagers, there was an emotional maturity amongst us. We all unpacked our experiences of bullying, prejudice and ostracisation whilst working on our project. In retrospect, our group became the
manifestation of a collective. There were transgender teenagers, who felt safe in our environment, after having spent too long providing relentless explanations. Romantic relationships flourished in the run-up to the march and I also met my late friend, Zoe. Pride events eventually become imbued with your most meaningful memories.
Living in a global pandemic may have thwarted many cultural and social events, however, it has provided an essence of community. We can use this month to keep on educating one another about what Pride Month means for many of us. Education can be entertaining, and I recommend watching the Netflix documentary, The Death and Life of Marsha P Johnson. It follows the suspicious death of Johnson, a transgender activist in New York, whose body was found in the Hudson River in 1992. Additionally, Australian stand-up comedian Hannah Gadsby’s show Nanette, also on Netflix is a hilarious insight into Gadsby’s life. From coming out as a lesbian to being mistaken as a man, treating many taboo subjects with wit, dignity and intelligence. If none of the above whets your appetite, there is always Madonna. Knowing Right From Wrong With Bipolar Disorder Is a bipolar person conscious about what is right and wrong at the time they do something wrong?
FOR some women, shaving irritation is a big problem meaning that they can only shave every other day. A safety razor is the best thing for achieving a smooth shave. Two important points for shaving are that it is essential to avoid using soap and never try to shave with dry skin. With the right amount of pressure, you can have an irritation-free experience without having to shave a couple of times. Hair grows in all directions so, remember, you don’t always have to shave upwards, try shaving in different directions.
Some plastic razors will not allow you to shave with the grain in the same direction as your hair is growing. You will find that with a proper safety razor, you don’t have to shave over the area again and again. The main cause of irritation is too much pressure between the razor and your skin. Keep a light touch and hold back on the pressure over areas like shins, kneecaps, and ankles to avoid cuts. Angle your razor at about 30 degrees from your skin and hold your skin taught with one hand as you shave.
THE answer is a YES and NO… depends on the person, and how severely ill they might have been at the time the behaviour happened. For many of us living with bipolar disorder we can experience psychotic episodes at some point during our illness. Psychosis involves loss of touch with reality. So during that time, someone with bipolar disorder may be acting under the hallucinations or delusions. Under these circumstances, we aren’t aware of our actions. Bad sleeping patter ns or insomnia, is a common problem for people with bipolar disorder. Sleep is extremely important, and sleep disturbance most often triggers mood episodes. I monitor my sleeping, and over the years h a v e learned that on my third night of disruptive sleep or lack of sleep I should start to worry and also mention it to a family member. Its also important to distinguish what kind of sleeping problem you are having, is it trying to fall asleep but unable to ? or is it that feeling of ‘not needing to sleep,’ or is it just feeling tired constantly… That feeling of tiredness is usually linked to the depressive side of bipolar whereas the not needing to sleep can be linked to the ma-
nia side. When manic, your sense of boundaries are screwed. That filter that most people use and have in place no longer exists. You can come across as rude or harsh. Also during the mania ,I also don’t fully remember how down I feel during the depressive times, which can be hard for your loved ones to know where exactly you are in your cycle. One day you’re full of life and the next you can be down in the dumps. However being bipolar should not be a get-out-of-jailfree card. We usually manage to hide the worst side of ourselves from people that don’t truly know us, as we tend to be on ‘edge’ and only feel comfortable and s a f e around people that do know the REAL us, so we do have a degree of control over our actions and behaviour, however we don’t often know right from wrong in that split moment, usually when everything settles down we can see reason. THE UK will switch to Apple and Google technology for its Covid-19 test-and-trace app, its home-grown system was not working well enough on Apple’s iPhone. The test and trace programme is reportedly key to reopening the country but has been dogged by problems. The app developed by the National Health Service (NHS) was initially expected to be rolled out nationwide in May but did not materialise. Dido Harding, head of the test-and-trace programme, and Matthew Gould, chief executive of the health service’s technology unit NHSX said “We have agreed to share our own innovative work ... with Google and Apple, while using their solution to address some of the specific technical
