WITH Covid-19 finally beginning to dissipate as residents adhere to strict protective measures the Spanish government now consider the country a safe zone. All they ask is that Spain’s residents follow their instructions for our own good and to respect the lives of the more than 27,000 people that were lost and celebrate the over 150,000 lives that were saved. At the beginning of April Spain ranked the highest in the world for coronavirus fatalities, but due to the quick and carefully planned actions of the country’s very own hero Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, we have managed to drop to sixth place with only 25 fatalities in the last seven days, at the time of going to press. Sanchez enabled us to put our trust in him as he guided us through the crisis to provide the best care for his countrymen and adopted residents. For this, we owe him a great debt and plan to show him by keeping his country alive. Therefore, Euro Weekly News is very excited to say welcome back to Spain’s many visitors. It’s been such a long time since we have seen you and we are happy with the news that the country will accept tourists from June 21. You will be happy to know that the sun is blazing right now and we have been enjoying the occasional heatwave so what better time to hit the country’s 5,000 miles of coastline and thousands of beaches? It will definitely be a great escape from the rioting and looting being observed in many other countries’ cities just now and a chance to relax after the stress and confusion caused by the Covid crisis. The many fantastic restaurants have been able to open to a larger capacity and are launching special offers to entice you with beautiful fresh seafood, local delicacies and Spain’s famous long list of tapas, full of choices.

Green light for road THE Diputacion de Almeria has given the green light to a nearly €9 million spend on upgrades to the province’s road network. The move is part of the provincial council’s €54 million ‘Plan Almeria’ aimed at promoting social and economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, and specifically to activate investment in towns and provide business for construction and auxiliary companies. According to the Diputacion the investment allows for an acceleration in the process of putting 24 highway modernisation projects out to tender, covering some 60 kilometres of road in more than 30 different municipalities throughout Almeria. The main works include repairing and improving road surfaces, updated markers and improvements to roundabouts. TWO kittens abandoned in Roquetas de Mar are safe and well thanks to kind-hearted Guardia Civil officers. They were out on duty when they heard the tiny cats’ distressed-sounding mews. As soon as the officers finished the job they had to do they started to search for the kittens. They eventually found one of the little creatures under a car. But the mews from the other were coming from inside the engine. The officers set about finding the vehi-

New team line-up THE new mayor of Huercal-Overa has named his council team lineup. Domingo Fernandez explained the local authority positions are organised into three main areas. First Deputy-Mayor Jose Diego Lopez heads Culture, Knowledge and Social Well-being, which encompasses health, sport, youth, tourism, education, training and equality, among others. Monica Navarro is Second Deputy-Mayor, and oversees Economic Management and Employment Training, which includes finance, European programmes and institutional relations. The Third Deputy-Mayor is Blas Sanchez, whose area is Territory Management. This covers matters like public works, infrastructure, sustainable development, urban planning and the environment. “The distribution of the councillorships had been done with the conviction that the councillors are going to do great work in the different areas,” Fernandez commented. “All our councillors are people defined by their dedication and capacity for work, and with them we are going to carry on making

BEACH monitors have been taking up their posts on Costa Almeria coastline as part of efforts to ensure the province’s beaches are free of risk of the spread of Covid-19 this season. The Junta de Andalucia has contracted 660 of the beach control assistants for Almeria. Their main tasks are to ensure beach-goers and bathers comply with regulations and conditions for using beaches in the circumstances created by the pandemic: social distancing, maximum capacity limits and hygiene and safety measures. The regional government delegate for Health and Families, Juan de Belmonte Cruz, joined

In Vera, as well as in the province’s 12 other coastal localities, the beach assistants have been kitted out with equipment including masks, gloves, sunglasses, sun protection cream, a white cap, blue shorts and a Junta de Andalucia polo shirt with the slogan ‘Playas Seguras’ (Safe Beaches), on the back. They are also provided with a smartphone with internet, email, WhatsApp and access to the Junta de Andalucia’s 112 emergency service application.
Helping most vulnerable ADRA Council and the local branch of the Red Cross have signed an agreement to consolidate and strengthen assistance to vulnerable groups following a long history of the two institutions working together. Mayor Manuel Sanchez underlined the importance of the agreement at what he described as “a crucial time,” and praised the Red Cross for all their efforts. In return the Red Cross local assembly president Alicia Sanchez thanked the council for its commitment. “It is going to allow us to carry on helping those who are going through these difficult times and cover such basic needs as food and medication.” The agreement is focused on people affected by isolation and confinement, residents in a situation of energy poverty, the disabled and elderly, women and families with children with social difficulties and the homeless. It also applies to people affected by ERTE temporary suspensions of job contracts or job losses.

Cruise to boost shopping VERA Council is offering a Mediterranean cruise for two as top prize in a competition aimed at boosting shopping in local businesses. The initiative is part of a council campaign “to reactivate and boost activity in the locality’s local businesses, helping to cushion the blow of the drastic reduction in income brought about by the halt due to coronavirus,” explained councillor Ana Lourdes Ramirez. Vera mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco urged residents to “prioritise Vera’s small and medium-sized businesses,” describing them as “an essential element of life in our town and a key piece in economic de-

All set for summer THE beaches along the Cuevas Del Almanzora coast are set for the start of the summer, the local council says. The local authority’s Works and Services department has finalised the efforts to get the municipality’s 17-kilometres of coastline, which includes Villaricos and Palomares, ready to receive visitors from this week onwards now the season is officially underway. Works went on for a fortnight to ensure the beaches and facilities were all prepared, and above all else that cleanliness and safety are guaranteed. The council explained
the works included thorough cleans of all toilet modules, preparing modules for lifeguard posts and repairs to viewing points and access to beaches. It also explained that the cleaning service will this year be doubled for the duration of the holiday season and that there will be a person permanently assigned to the continuous disinfection of the toilet modules. The council said it is allocating some €100,000 extra this year to beach cleaning services and safety to ensure the public can “continue enjoying safe beaches, free of Covid-19.”
The competition covers shopping in either Vera town or Vera Playa, not including large supermarkets. Shoppers have to spend a minimum of €40, which can be made up of various purchases in different outlets. Receipts with the participant’s name, ID and phone number on the back have to be deposited in an urn next to Vera Tourist Office or in the business where they bought from before September 3. The draw for the winners will be the following day. Other competition prizes include a weekend break for two with spa session in a hotel in Rodalquilar and a €100 voucher for shopping in Vera outlets.
Quick-thinking Airlift A QUICK-THINKING offduty Guardia Civil officer proved to be an invaluable help to a woman who fell and hurt herself quite seriously in a street in Laujar de Andarax. The officer happened to be on Calle Villa Espesa, which is currently undergoing works, when he saw the middle-aged woman stumble and fall to the ground. She suffered an open fracture to her ar m, which was bleeding profusely. The officer dashed over and immediately whipped off his t-shirt to wrap round the wound and stem the

MARITIME RESCUE airlifted a solo sailor off his yacht in Almerimar waters on Sunday after he trapped his hand while carrying out a manoeuvre, the Emergencias 112 service reported. The crew flew the injured 57-year-old to Almeria airport, where following Maritime Rescue’s notification of the situation an ambulance was waiting to rush him to a city hospital.
Counterfeit cash bust POLICE in El Ejido have arrested two people after they tried to pay for a top-ofthe-range mobile phone with eight counterfeit €100 notes. A police patrol went to the shop after staff detected the cash could be fake. The officers determined that the bills did indeed lack some of the security measures inserted into authentic notes and were in fact high quality replicas. The two detainees face charges for falsification of cash, stamps and watermarks and fraud.

A ROQUETAS DE MAR local is in trouble with the law for pilfering water melon from a greenhouse in El Ejido. Guardia Civil arrested the 48-year-old as one of three suspects who cut their way into the greenhouse and got away with 30 melons. The owner reported he had surprised them collecting the fruit inside his property. He managed to note down the number plate of their car before the vehicle disappeared. Guardia investigations allowed them to identify and locate one of the suspects; the robbery victim also identified him from a photo recognition. The search is still on for the other two.

Body found after fire A BODY has been found in a shack following a wildfire in Roquetas de Mar on June 11. Members of the emergency services who took part in the effort to douse the blaze made the gruesome discovery in the structure located next to an abandoned water deposit after the flames had been extinguished. No details have been released about the identity of the body. The Emergencias 112 service reported the fire broke out at about 1pm in vegetation next to greenhouses near to the A-1051 and a commercial centre.

Social distancing crowd control VERA Council is taking on private security personnel to control the number of people going into the local authority’s public assistance office and to ensure social distancing is maintained at all times. Public Safety councillor Alfonso Garcia said the move is aimed at “offering greater safety guarantees” in the face of the risk of Covid-19 infection for both municipal employees and for the members of the public who use the office to sort out adminis-
trative matters. The councillor pointed out that in recent days there have been high numbers of people going to the office due to the backlog created by the coronavirus crisis lockdown. Garcia explained the private security personnel will “contribute to the reinforcement of the existing municipal security as the Local Police officers who currently carry out these functions will be able to attend to other matters related to public safety.”

Home Free premises torched for good causes by ex A 45-YEAR-OLD man is under arrest for torching his former girlfriend’s home in what is effectively a shanty town on the outskirts of Almeria City. She suffered minor injuries in the fire. Police tracked down and detained the suspect about three kilometres away from the burning shack in the La Goleta area in the provincial capital’s Almadrabillas Park. There was a restraining order in place against the 45-year-old prohibiting him from going near his ex or from contacting her. As well as a charge for gender-based violence, the authorities have also charged him with breaching an order.
HUERCAL-OVERA Council is providing free municipal premises for good causes. The council has signed an agreement with four local non-profit associations which gives them the use of the space at no charge: the Virgin del Rio Association for the Disabled: the ASTEA autism association, the Alzheimer Association and the Cuna Del Bolillo bobbin lace association. Huercal-Overa mayor Francisca Fernandez explained the agreement “guarantees municipal support and the legal security of both parties for carrying out the activities contemplated in the associations’ social aims.” These are groups, the mayor said, “which carry out commendable and committed work in our, town, raising awareness about and supporting collectives such as people with a disability or who are affected by some kind of illness or disorder.” She also explained that the agreement would also be signed with other social associations, and residents’ and cultural groups. In addition, she pointed out that the local authority has included in this year’s budget project a round of subsidies for different non-profit entities. They are able to present projects for the activities they plan to carry out over the year in which they would like the local council to collaborate with a financial contribution.

THE Costa Almeria capital is the cheapest tourist city in Spain for a bed for the night but the priciest for a beer, according to Rastreator rankings. The analysis of the country’s 10 most touristy cities revealed that seven nights in a three-star hotel in the centre of Almeria City sets back visitors an average of €314, or €44 a night. This is 38 per cent below the national average. Yet the price of a beer in the provincial capital is 35 per cent higher than the average for Spain at typically €6 a litre.

Almeria provincial council president Javier A Garcia received Ana Garcia Segundo at the Diputacion offices last week, where he presented her with the official flag which she will take with her to the competition final in Castellon on July 25. The young law student told the Diputacion president how excited she is to be representing Almeria and how proud she is of her home province. Garcia told Ana to “never lose your essence, as that is what lasts,” adding,

GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested a 55-year-old man from Olula del Rio over a fire in the garage of a residential block in the same locality, causing €70,000 worth of damage. Inspections of the garage allowed investigators to gather clues and determine where the fire began. Subsequent investigations, during which there was a reconstruction of the events, then led to the identification of the suspected fire starter. According to the Guardia, the 55-year-old
had been aiming to cause harm to one of the building’s residents, and with whom he’d been having fallouts for years. The Guardia also reported the detainee has a record for threat with firearms and causing bodily harm. The investigation revealed he had been on the scene at the time of the fire and when the emergency services were battling to put out the flames. Not only that, but he had tried to dissuade firefighters from going into the location of the fire.
Hard work rewarded THE renewal of all the blue flag quality recognitions for Adra’s beaches this summer is the reward for all the hard work over the last year, said local mayor Manuel Cortes. For the second year in a row there will be Blue Flags flying on the El Carboncillo, El Censo, San Nicolas and Sirena Loca beaches. The ADEAC Environmental and Consumer Education Association has also awarded the symbol of quality to Adra’s San Nicolas trail once again. This is the only trail in Almeria Province to have the distinction, and is the result, the mayor said, of the local council’s efforts on recovering and highlighting the value of old tracks and coastal paths. Cortes has also revealed that the local authority is going to request the Junta de Andalucia award Adra the ‘segura’ (safe) symbol conceded to municipalities which offer guarantees for the tourism sector.
In the final phase of the investigation the Guardia tracked down the suspect and charged him.
Neo-Nazi ‘clan’ bust GUARDIA CIVIL have arrested nine members of a Costa Almeria Neo-Nazi gang for inciting hate and racial violence. The Guardia said the 18 to 28-year-olds detained in Antas and Garrucha were all members of the socalled ‘Antas Klan,’ a violent, far-right youth group. In the Guardia’s words, the organisation “set up clandestine patrols, which roved round at night, filling the streets with flyers with messages of hate and violence against the Muslim community.” The Guardia operation also resulted in the dismantling of a drug sales set-up in Antas. The gang members used the proceeds from the illegal sales to fund their activities. The nine now face charges for inciting hate and violence against a minority “for racist, xenophobic and Islamophobic” reasons, membership of a criminal group, unlawful association and drug trafficking. Raids on properties led to the seizure of a knife, knuckle dusters and nearly 500 radical content flyers and posters, as well as marihuana and other drugs.

No mercy FATIMA OFKIR REYES, from Barcelona, is the youngest Spanish prisoner abroad and has just been sentenced to 25 years in prison in Oman. Reyes was arrested at the young age of 18; however, she has now spent her 21st birthday behind bars. Reyes has been refused extradition. Illegal demand A RESTAURANT in Madrid has allegedly demanded that diners must ‘test negative’ for Covid19 before they are allowed to make a table reservation at its establishment. On Friday June 12 Madrid’s Ginkgo Restaurant & Sky Bar allegedly told a customer it was obligatory to have a Covid-19 test at least 72 hours prior to making a reservation to dine at the restaurant, and test negative for the disease Furthermore, the establishment is said to have offered the customer the op-

A mother’s love LOCAL POLICE officers in Sevilla have arrested a reckless driver who was endangering lives as she attempted to drive whilst being under the influence. The combination of alcohol and conflict caused the event to turn violent as she tried to attack her mother and the policemen. This careless 30-year-old woman was reported to the police by her own mother who called to say she was about to drive under the influence. The daughter who was clearly drunk and had admitted to consuming cannabis as well had al-
ready begun driving her car when the police arrived to stop her. The officer informed the woman that she must carry out a breathalyser test, which she quickly refused. The incident soon took a more violent turn as the driver tried to attack her own mother. The officers stepped in to avoid this happening; however, the drunken woman punched an officer in the throat. Therefore, she was immediately arrested. She was charged with crimes against road safety as well as driving under the influence.

Boosting car sales
FINANCIAL AID: Spain’s PM proposes to help individuals and the self-employed to buy a new car. THE government has announced that it plans to scrap old vehicles of more than 10 years old, in a bid to boost car sales and a depressed automotive sector. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also announced subsidies of between €400 and €4,000 tow a rd s t h e p u rc h a s e o f a n e w c a r, d e p e n d i n g o n p o l l u t i o n emissions. In short, the more environmentally friendly it is, the greater the subsidy. According to Sánchez, “the most urgent action is to revive car sales that will reactivate
the factories.” Individual or self-employed people buying a vehicle can expect to receive a subsidy of between €400 and €800, depending on how efficient the model is. Despite opposition, those buying a petrol or diesel car will still be subsidised, but not as much as someone buying an electric/hybrid car. Those buying an ECO car (hybrid or petrol car), will benefit from financial aid of between €600 or €1,000, respectively, towards a new car
purchase. H o w e v e r, t h o s e b u y i n g c a r s with zero emissions can expect a subsidy of up to €4,000. However, manufacturers and dealers must match the amount provided by the gove r n m e n t . S u b s i d i e s , h o w e v e r, will exclude the purchase of any vehicle that exceeds 120 grams of CO2 emissions, so most SUVs could be left out. Subsidies also only apply to vehicles costing up to €35,000, or €45,000 for people with reduced mobility or cars without emissions.

White King THE very first White Lion to have been born in a Spanish zoo is being looked after by staff as he was rejected by his mother. The lion, which has been named White King by Sevilla zoo keepers, was born on May 31 but was abandoned by its mother after a traumatic birth. White King was born at the Guillena World Park Reserve. Three days later staff were forced to pull him out of the enclosure after being repeatedly snubbed by his mother and suffering with dehydration, hypothermia and hypoglycaemia. Zoo director Juan Luis Malpartida said the lioness, who was brought over from Thailand four years ago, was in labour for two weeks before White King was finally born. Mr Malpartida said the bundle of white fur was being bottle fed and doing well, and getting no end of cuddles from staff.

Happy to Drive in Spain with Foreign Number Plates? FOR many years a significant number of expatriates living in Spain have chosen not to take out residency and have driven cars with foreign number plates, relatively content that they were unlikely to have problems with the authorities. British passport holders who fit into this category need to understand that Brexit has changed everything and now whilst it was possible for members of European Union states to drive a foreign plated car for 180 days out of 365 in Spain, this will no longer be the case when the UK finally exits the EU. Then you have to register your vehicle or get rid of it. Many may assume that it’s worth taking a risk but the recent seiz-

The value is not market value except in rare cases but is supplied via the Hacienda (tax office) tables which are much less than market value. The percentage of value levied as tax is either zero, 4.75 per cent, 9.75 per cent or between 14.75 per cent and 16.9 per cent depending on the region of Spain where the car is to be registered and is based on the CO2 emissions. Additionally, you will need to pay road tax (IVTM) which is set
by each town hall, so the cost varies To register your vehicle, you will need an engineer’s inspection which produces a ficha reducida which is not a mechanical inspection, but verification of the vehicle’s characteristics. Where a vehicle has a manufacturers Certificate of Conformity, the ficha reducida is not required. it will then need an ITV (MOT) test undertaken. Following this, the two taxes are paid, and the car can be registered at Trafico. This will allow you to obtain Spanish number plates, insure the car here in Spain and drive it without worry (This article is for information only and should not be taken as legal advice)
Not ‘Mandatory’
THE Ministry of Interior has clarified that it is not ‘mandatory’ or ‘necessary’ for police officers in Spain to record the event in which they use their tasers. Body-worn cameras are an effective way of moni-
toring police behaviour and ensuring they do not take advantage of their position of power. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior has explained that there is no need for officers to record
the event given that “there are other systems which can determine the traceability of these devices without having to affect fundamental rights, data protection of the privacy of individuals.”These dangerous guns send 22 electrical pulses through your body; typically causing you to fall on the floor, if you are hit again then this electrical current is doubled. However, Nidec, the company which creates the taser pistols claims that these weapons possess the necessary technology to activate body police cameras automatically when in use. This is a very contentious debate amongst the human rights advocates and police authorities in Spain. For now, authorities have made it clear this is not a necessary practice, but organisations like Amnesty International believe in the need for strict and clear protocols when using these weapons.

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Borbon legacy started in 1700 with Felipe V, however, it has not been an easy path for the Royal house, they have been reinstated on four occasions Juan Carlos I being the last. The latest scandals concerning the former King
Juan Carlos I were related to offshore funds that were undeclared and kept in a Swiss bank alleged to be linked to a high-speed rail project in Saudi Arabia. These claims have jeopardised the House of Borbon once again and triggered off demands for a
republic from the left. Juan Carlos I, was held in high regard for his role in the transition between the dictatorship and the democracy in Spain, with his high point in 1981 when he made a public television broadcast that became a major factor in the military backing down from a coup d’etat. However, later scandals relating to embezzlement involving his daughter, Cristina, and the infamous
hunting of elephants in Botswana led to a barrage of public criticism that is said to have made the former king abdicate in 2014. Moreover, earlier this year Felipe VI relinquished his inheritance, which has been seen by many in Spain as a form of recognising its immoral origin. The Monarchy in Spain has never gained the same affection from the public as the UK has, part-

ly owing to the fact that there has not been a longstanding monarchy rule but also a dictatorship and a time as a republic. The UK press also favours its Royal family whereas in Spain this is not the case. Alfonso XIII abdicated in 1931 when the republican parties won local elections, which were considered to be a plebiscite on the monarchy. Spain has had two republics which were short-
lived, nevertheless, many voices, especially from the left-wing, will take this opportunity to vindicate a new republic. Podemos leader and Spain’s vice president, Pablo Iglesias, has on many occasions stated his clear vision of the republic and leaders from regional communities such as the Basque Country and Catalonia are more than happy to back the proposal.

Morrisons Possible delay to new shopping pension tiff EVEN though profits for UK supermar ket group Morrisons have remained high during the lockdown, more than one third of shareholders voted against a proposal to reward senior directors with significant increases in pension contributions. It was considered that to receive 19 per cent more than the average 5 per cent was unfair and although the award did receive sufficient votes for it to be carried, the company has decided to re view the situation. It has however ex tended its 10 per cent discount for NHS workers until September.
THERE was jubilation in the Tor remolinos Council chamber when British developer Intu of fered to build a huge new com mercial and leisure park in the town at an estimated cost of €850 million. That was in May last year but finances were clearly a problem for the company as in December it sold its Puerto Venecia shop ping centre in Zaragoza and then another centre in Asturias. The company which relies up on footfall at its UK and Spanish shopping centres as well as rent
from stores has suffered further with closures during the Covid 19 pandemic and now it is re ported that it is having difficul ty in finding nearly €50 million to start works on the roads around the area chosen in order to ensure free movement of ve hicles. One of its partners in this project, the Portuguese Euro fund Group has now indicated that it may well be interested in taking over the entire project which will come as a consider able relief to the Torremolinos
Council which anticipated the creation of more than 4,000 jobs in the area and an influx of some 20 million visitors each year. Intu are not down and out as they still own the prestigious Xanadu centre in Madrid which will soon be back to the ‘new normal’ and has interest or owns some 17 centres in the UK. Time will tell which company will eventually build this new complex, but it currently looks as if it will still go ahead.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he divide his 90 days? You implied in a previous column that the 90day ‘clock’ for a tourist stay in Spain would only start ticking after the State of Alarm has ended. Does this apply to the 183day rule as well? My flight back to the UK has been cancelled four times now so I have stayed much longer than planned, and if I return in the autumn (flights booked long ago) I could now exceed 183 days for the year. Can I subtract the period of lockdown from my time in Spain when measuring against the 183 days? A S (Costa del Sol)
Think for ward, not backward. The YOU AND THE LAW State of Alarm is IN SPAIN now scheduled to end June 21. From that day you have the right to a tourist stay of 90 days during the following 183 days. These days need not be continuous. If you get a flight June 27, say, using up six of your days, you can return in the autumn with 84 days remaining to you. At the end of that time you must leave Spain and you may not return for at least the following 90 days.

Currently a very high per centage of the work undertak en is outsourced and it is now looking to recruit 3,000 quali fied staff of which 1,000 will work for the bank in Spain. BUSINESS EXTRA Award quashed THE World Bank has stepped in and overturned a compensation claim for €128 million which was awarded against the Spanish government in 2017 following the introduction of a green policy with regards to energy production.

Spain’s debt increases SINCE 2017, Spain’s general government debt (which includes the autonomous re gions) had been steadily decreasing on a quarter by quarter basis. Figures just released by the Bank of Spain show a significant increase to €1.224 trillion (98.9 per cent of Gross Do mestic Product) for the first quarter of
2020. This was 3.5 per cent higher than the last quarter of 2019 and rose even before the lockdown and State of Alarm had in fluenced the results. Second quarter figures will almost cer tainly take the debt above 100 per cent of GDP.

The UK is not the USA
AS you can probably imagine, this week I truly had no idea where to start. Events taking place this past week or so have left me disgusted, saddened, angry and in utter despair. To me, one thing that has been made perfectly clear is that these BLM demonstrations and riots have managed to create more racial divisions in society than any other movement in living memory. People who previously never had a racist bone in their bodies have been virtually thrown into a mix which is dividing neighbours, breaking down friendships and even causing rifts in families. Racism is now rife. So well done all the marchers protesting against… Yep you’ve guessed it… Racism! To be frank, apart from the horrendous and utterly unacceptable way George Floyd was murdered, it seems pretty obvious to me that to present a vicious, armed robbing thug, who was a career criminal high on drugs, as an example of black culture, is hardly the brightest way to gain sympathy or support for a cause, however well intentioned. And do you know something? Despite all the protesting and postulating, I’m still not entirely clear what they actually want? The UK is not the USA.
DEMONSTRATIONS: Have created more racial divisions in society than ever before. In Britain it appears to me that if you are ethnic or black you often seem to have even more opportunities than the white population. Many are chosen for positions specifically because they have these backgrounds! Police recruitment schemes, the BBC and a whole spate of recent TV commercials immediately spring to mind.
You certainly don’t see advertisements asking people to apply for positions purely because they are white, the outcry would be humungous! As far as stop and search is concerned, the problem there is that the percentage of criminality, particularly among young black men, is so high it stands to reason they are going to be tar-
geted. I can’t think of a more waste of police time than patting down old white ladies for weapons or drugs. As for the opposition to a number of statues, these memorials are not exhibited to glorify slavery; they are erected to commemorate the achievements and efforts of historical figures. Ironically many of these ‘plinth occupiers’ are actually responsible for the democratic and liberal society that enables these protests to be allowed in the first place. No this is another blatant attempt to erode and air brush the British heritage and culture out of existence. What they hope to replace it with I can’t imagine! Whatever it turns out to be, you can rest assured it will include no encouragement of free speech, or enjoy the unbiased democratic way of life our ancestors fought and died for. I actually think there is a New World Order approaching, (‘like a thief in the night’!) the instigators of which must be rubbing their hands at the chaos being caused by all this unrest. Get the Onesies out, Orwellian doctrine is on the horizon, and the luvvies, lefties and ‘wokers’ have only themselves to blame. Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

First Stop Italia... Next Stop, the World GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS the most simple pleasures of life slowly return, they suddenly feel more fantastic than before. I walked through Marbella on Monday, filled with mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s great to see people reuniting over coffee, or ice cream. Wide smiles and excited chat. Simple daily life, that we now treasure. On the other, to see the large number of businesses that have been forced to close, was shocking. While the world has entered recession, to see it on such a scale, in a town like Marbella, was an eye opener. A week ago, I stopped by a small restaurant, in the centre of town. The owner, a charming lady, explained how she was trying to get customers to return. Trying everything - cutting prices, setting up a home delivery service and such. I could see the panic in her eyes. She explained that people are simply not going out to eat, as people are nervous. I applauded her strength and determination. I assured her I would return soon with friends. Sadly, when I returned just days later, her business was gone. Life is very mixed right now. Again, a story of two sides. On one, we need tourism to restart, but at the same time, we the residents, are extremely lucky to have Marbella so tranquil, as it heads towards mid-June. Most days I hang out at the beach. It’s a dawn till dusk addiction, and one I am reluctant to give up. Long days spent swimming, lunching and snoozing on an almost empty beach. Los Monteros is my HQ, and I love it. My house is on the beach, so it’s as if, all I need, is all I have. Such a fantastic area, and certainly the best beach in Marbella. Social distancing is respected, and all in all, life’s, as the saying goes, a beach. On Wednesday I was craving pizza. Actually, if I’m honest, I crave pizza most days. At a small local restaurant,
ITALY: Where my heart belongs. Picassa Pizza in El Rosario, I found the best pizza I’ve eaten in years. Chef Ángel is the man you need to know, if you want great pizza. I don’t know how it happened, but I arrived home with two. Well you know, cold pizza for breakfast is always a treat. As if the pizza was leading me back to Italy, I took a call from my friend Edo in Rome, inviting me to a party next month. But how could I get there? Would the airport be open? I knew that I had to get there, no matter what. Those who know me, know my heart belongs in Italy, especially Rome. A city where I’ve lived for many years. A city that fills me with so much happiness, it almost feels like a Fellini movie. After months of lockdown, just like that, it seems I’ll be at home, in Rome again, soon. My heart pumps at the thought. To reboot local economy, doesn’t have to be dinner at a Michelin restaurant. A simple espresso at a bar is a good place to start. An amazing, inexpensive pizza (or two) is also a good plan. I’m a firm believer in tipping. As we emerge from lockdown, into an uncertain world, these days I find myself over tipping, everywhere I go. Perhaps the universe will return the favour somehow. We live in hope!

THE Madeleine McCann suspect reportedly linked to the disappearance of other young children has reignited interest in the whole sad story. The same suspect who was ‘discarded’ in 2007 in the original Portuguese investigation. However, that investigation failed to consider mobile phone data among a litany of errors. Kate and Gerry McCann have waited 13 years while Madeleine’s disappearance has spawned conspiracy theories, and panic among other parents. And though a new suspect has undeniably reignited interest in their daughter’s case, the British media were hooked from the moment she went missing. Let’s hope this is the end of their ordeal. Everyone has an opinion about the McCanns. Leaving their children alone was undoubtedly an error of judgement, but they’ve paid the highest price for it. But then, should parents leave their kids in a car when they nip to the shops, or in a pram outside them? But it’s not just about what they did, it’s what the abductor did. And it’s not unusual that a prime suspect turns up early in a police investigation and is virtually ignored or ‘discarded.’ This has happened in several cases: the York-
shire Ripper, Milly Dowler (in Surrey), Rachel Nickell (in Wimbledon) and others. One distinguishing factor in these particular cases is that the eventual offender’s related crimes have included crossing borders into different police regions and, occasionally, different countries. Naturally, there are other criteria that have to be considered such as the expertise of the investigators, their impartiality, their proficiency or motivation (or even lack of financial resources) that permit them to, or prevent them from, pursuing every line of enquiry to an effective and appropriate conclusion. Factored into this, pressures from senior officers (as in the Jeremy Bamber case), politicians, public opinion and financial cuts can all have implications for the success or failure of an investigation. Hopefully, after all these years of anguish for the McCann family, Madeleine’s abductor is finally identified. It may bring closure of sorts, but the healing of wounds ... never. The Power of Hope ROBERT SHALLIS ALBERT EINSTEIN once said: ‘Learn from yesterday, live for today, HOPE for tomorrow.’ With the world experiencing so much pain, uncertainty and confusion at present, the word ‘Hope’ once again has been called to duty. But is hope just a word we use half-heartedly when we are trying to hold on to something less negative out of desperation, or can it really make a difference? It’s actually a very powerful thing as it can inspire us, uplift us and help us get through those difficult and challenging times. Sometimes, just holding on to a little hope when everything around us can seem hopeless is not an easy thing to do when so many people prefer to hold on to despair.
POWERFUL WORD: You’ll soon find it to be a much healthier, positive and practical alternative. Hope is magical, it is a positive use of our imagination, the vision of a better outcome and has the ability to turn dreams into reality. Today most of us are hoping for a better world and a brighter future. It’s important that we continue to do so as it can help make each day seem more bearable during such testing times. It gives us the strength to carry on and push forward. Living without hope isn’t really
living, but of course it’s our choice. Optimism or pessimism? We are free to decide. Hope and despair have allies, faith and fear. Faith and fear are interesting as they both require that you believe in something you cannot see. So, hope itself requires an element of faith which is believing in something without evidence. The substance of faith is hope. We can easily be driven by
our fears however, we can also be driven by our hopes and beliefs, which most would agree is a more effective and positive way to live each day. It can sometimes be difficult to change our perspective but if you’re tired of that all too familiar feeling of doom and gloom which can often overwhelm us especially in today’s current climate, try practising hope.
Try focusing on a different ending to the story. Life is an open book, instead of predicting the worst, use the miraculous and amazing strength and power of hope to help change the chapters. So, let’s hold on to that powerful word . Let it become part of you and a way of being. You’ll soon find it to be a much healthier, positive and practical alternative. Simply put, hope is what you would like to happen. What would you like to happen? Don’t lose sight of hope, it is surely a better way to live, it helps you get to where you want to be and creates that shining light at the end what can sometimes seem like a never-ending dark tunnel? DEAR Euro Weekly, Thank god we are going into Phase 3 but I do wonder why are some bars and restaurants holding off opening until July? I thought they would be desperate to open and get bums on seats and start to recover some money. I saw on your Facebook that you are doing something to help small businesses with advertising which is a good idea as it’s hard to really track who is opening and when and maybe some little places will go unlooked and go bust. It really should be a time for businesses to pull out all the stops. If it was me I would be plastering posters up everywhere to get people to come to my restaurant. SOME readers may have just turned the page every time the McCann parents appeared back in the papers, claiming it was a story with no good outcome, a waste of police resources or sadly that they thought the parents had something to do with their daughter’s disappearance or even death. However, it just goes to show that perseverance can sometimes lead to the discovery of an unturned stone. Last week German authorities identified 43-year-old Christian Brueckner, a German sex offender, as the prime suspect in the little girl’s disappearance. Brueckner, currently in prison in Germany for a drug offence is also appealing a previous conviction for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was abducted Now German police are also looking into if he was involved in the case of a six-year-old German boy, René Hasee, who disappeared in the Algarve in 1996 and fiveyear-old, Inga Gehricke, who disappeared in 2015 near his property in Stendhal, Germany. The authorities are slowly uncovering a list of sexual assaults, child pornography and countless other crimes. How did it take so long to find this man with so many breadcrumbs left behind leading directly to him? He was known in Praia da Luz, he was known to shower children with attention and gifts, friends and ex-girlfriends are now saying they helped him disappear, or heard him hint that he had done something, one even took ownership of his car. Why has it finally taken so long to put this puzzle together? There definitely seems to be more people to blame for hiding this high profile story and luckily for the heartbroken McCann parents it should clear them of any doubt.

A serious ramble I’m not sure why the right wing Imperialists are getting hung up on statues and street names - If someone put a statue of Jimmy Saville up on our street to commemorate his good works for children’s charity I wouldn’t complain if someone came along now and took it down. They’re red herrings though, who has learnt history from statues or street names, very few I suspect, yet more people will have learnt the terrible history of Colston and the slave trade from the taking down of his statue than ever learned anything about it at school - I looked at the history syllabus for this year and it’s no different than I was taught in the 60’s - basically glorification of the British Empire and all the good work Britain did which is fine, but no mention of all of the really terrible things Britain did during Colonisation / so personally I don’t condone vandalism and I confess it’s getting a bit silly on both sides with right wing extremists due to protest and look for trouble around monuments this weekend, but I care less about statues and street names other than I hope what is being done short term, whether people believe it’s right or wrong might lead to some change in education and the longer term knowledge of future generations - we shouldn’t continue to whitewash history in our education, literature and learning.

Liberty Seguros raises over € 6,000 for the Paralympic Youth Athletics Promises Team DUE to the pandemic with mandatory social distancing rules and heightened security measures, Liberty Seguros found itself in an unprecedented situation with regard to this year’s Liberty Race. For the first time ever, its flagship event took place online and delighted in achieving its objective of championing diversity and integration through sport. Raising an outstanding €6,333 for the Paralympic Youth Athletics Promises Team, the Liberty Race was once again hailed a resounding success. This year, the Liberty Race saw 3,000 individuals participate in the event with nearly 1,000 users of social media sharing photos across networks and the hashtag #MiCarreraLiberty experiencing an engagement of over 860,000 on Twitter and Instagram alone. The Liberty Race advocates
solidarity and unity whilst raising funds for young athletes with promising potential at sports level who have not yet benefited from the ADOP Plan. This programme is designed to assist elite sportspeople with disabilities in Spain to prepare for the Paralympic Games. As with previous years, funds raised through donations made by the participants of the race will go to the athletes in the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team. Supported by Liberty Seguros, the Paralympic Athletics Promises Team comprises young males and females from all over Spain between the ages of 12 and 20 that are living with physical, visual, or intellectual challenges, such as those with learning disabilities or debilitating conditions such as cerebral palsy. Funds raised through the Liberty Race help the athletes to enhance their level of perfor-

Between 2012 and the present day, the Liberty Race has raised an impressive € 246,333 in total to support these young sportspeople.

breathe into it, relax on the exhale. Now the right side. Then up to the pelvis, abdomen and lower back, moving up through the torso and heart. From there your fingers, hands, wrists, up the arms, through the shoulders, neck, jaw, temples, ears, eyes, forehead, and skull. Mindful Breathing Practise twice daily to develop focus, attention, clarity and calm. Sit comfortably with a straight spine and find a slow breath. Count when you exhale and inhale from one to 10 eg inhale one, exhale one; inhale two, exhale two. Upon reaching 10, begin again but count down to one. When you’ve completed this cycle five times, maintain breathing at this calm and consistent pace, for two minutes, imagining your breath flowing through the respiratory system and realising its connection with your body.

Whether you’ve just finished a long walk or an exercise routine in the gym, that feeling you get after a good workout is unbeatable. Your body feels energised and your mind feels more focused and less cluttered. For me it releases an instant dash of happiness, but it may do much more than that - it might help prevent or reduce symptoms of my bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder being a condition that causes unusual shifts in mood and energy levels. I either feel v e r y ‘up,’energised at periods of time and very ‘down,’ d e pressed, a n d hopeless at other times. These mood episodes can affect my energy levels, emotions, and sleep patterns - and it can be very challenging to live with. That adrenaline and feel good feeling after working out it’s a very real feeling, it’s a result of your body producing natural feelgood chemicals. Other easy ways to stay active include: • Changing up your everyday activities, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift or park-
ing a little further away from the entrance to the supermarket. • Ta k i n g y o u r d o g f o r a walk, instead of just letting them out in the garden. • Going for a power-walk along the beach or climbing up and down staircases if you can’t get to a gym. If you don’t enjoy going to the gym or taking exercise classes, try activities that involve being active, like dancing. Many kinds of treatments can ease symptoms - medications, therapy, and living a healthy lifestyle. Exercise alone won’t manage all of your symptoms, but it can make them easier to manage and reduce your risk of other health complications. If something hurts or makes your symptoms more severe, stop those activities and talk to your doctor or professional. Different types of exercise work for different people. Keep trying new ways to stay active, have fun, and find what works for you. I for exa m p l e struggle with fast weight rep work outs as its pumps me up too much, the adrenaline is just too much for me!! But in these last weeks I have noticed a change in my moods throughout the day, less irritable, I actually have a sleeping pattern (it was non existent before!), my anxiety is less pronounced too. The brief ceremonial event traditionally held before formal birthday celebrations start, took place at 11am on June 13 at Windsor Castle. Although Trooping the Colour usually takes place at Buckingham Palace, the scaled-back version had to be moved to Windsor Castle, where the Queen is in isolation with Prince Philip. The small ceremonial event was designed in just two weeks to allow for social distancing among soldiers. The traditional Trooping the Colour event had already been cancelled
due to Covid-19 restrictions. Trooping the Colour ordinarily sees thousands flock to Buckingham Palace, lining the Mall to see the pageantry of the ceremony. However, this year the event meant that guardsmen had to maintain social distancing while standing in ceremonial formation. Although a much quieter birthday than the Queen is used to, there was still sufficient ‘pomp and circumstance’ to make it a memorable day. The Royal Family are spending the rest of the day in quiet celebration of Her Majesty’s 94th birthday, with many members joining the party ‘remotely.’
