VIVA ESPAÑA WITH Covid-19 finally beginning to dissipate as residents adhere to strict protective measures the Spanish government now consider the country a safe zone. All they ask is that Spain’s residents follow their instructions for our own good and to respect the lives of the more than 27,000 people that were lost and celebrate the over 150,000 lives that were saved. At the beginning of April Spain ranked the highest in the world for coronavirus fatalities, but due to the quick and carefully planned actions of the country’s very own hero Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, we have managed to drop to sixth place with only 25 fatalities in the last seven days, at the time of going to press. Sanchez enabled us to put our trust in him as he guided us through the crisis to provide the best care for his countrymen and adopted residents. For this, we owe him a great debt and plan to show him by keeping his country alive. Therefore, Euro Weekly News is very excited to say welcome back to Spain’s many visitors. It’s been such a long time since we have seen you and we are happy with the news that the country will accept tourists from June 21. You will be happy to know that the sun is blazing right now and we have been enjoying the occasional heatwave so what better time to hit the country’s 5,000 miles of coastline and thousands of beaches? It will definitely be a great escape from the rioting and looting being observed in many other countries’ cities just now and a chance to relax after the stress and confusion caused by the Covid crisis. The many fantastic restaurants have been able to open to a larger capacity and are launching special offers to entice you with beautiful fresh seafood, local delicacies and Spain’s famous long list of tapas, full of choices. Of course, you will need something to wash it down with so come and take your pick of refreshing sangria or

A SUMMER programme of activities has been put together to promote personal development and social integration after a long period of confinement due to the coronavirus pandemic. Social Rights councillor, Mariano Valera, announced his department has worked with the Community Revitalisation Service Elx Conviu to put together a series of events for July aimed at people over 18. “Workshops, walks around the town and

MATING: Flamingos reproducing in Torrevieja for the first time. FLAMINGOS are breeding at Torrevieja salt lagoon for the first time since their activities began being monitored. Although the distinctive water birds can be seen all year round in the wetlands south of Alicante, successful reproduction has only been recorded on a few occasions: in Santa Pola in 1973, 1975 and 2002, and in El Hondo in 1997 and 1998. About 1,000 pairs of flamingos have been found in the central area of the salt lake in Torrevieja and it is estimated
there are now 600 chicks - a sight never seen in this location before. The breeding colony is located in a very remote area, so an exact figure won’t be known until the chicks leave the site and the nests can be counted. Early May, staff from the Ministry of the Environment and from the Salinas noted the construction of flamingo nests in the central area that divides the salt mines. A discreet surveillance plan was established over the incipient colony, so they would have the necessary tranquillity to breed.
Flu campaign A MASS flu vaccination campaign is being brought forward in Valencia due to a ‘risk of Covid-19 resurgence.’ President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig has stressed “it is necessary to be able to differentiate the autumn flu from the coronavirus.” The Ministry of Health intends to make the initiative as broad as possible to reach all vulnerable sectors. Piug said it is important the flu and coronavirus are not confused this autumn, as they have similar symptoms, adding, “vaccination is how we fight more effectively against the flu, which leaves thousands dead every year.” “We want to speed up the process and bring forward the deadlines” for the regular vaccination campaign, said Puig, who insisted on the urgent need to achieve immunity against Covid-19. The president added he will seek a “more intense” campaign to “clearly discern both diseases.”

Back on the banks THE complete lockdown March 14 brought to an abrupt halt the Torrevieja’s Carp-R-Us club’s match calendar for the year. Spokesman Steve Fell said: “Gradually, as the lockdown was relaxed we were able to start thinking about when we could start fishing again, initially on a non-competitive basis.” It was while making these plans the club discovered that fishing is not considered a sport and falls in with hunting. Tourism drive ORIHUELA is aiming for a hole in one after launching a nationwide promotional campaign to boost golf tourism in the Vega Baja area. Entitled ‘Orihuela Golf Experience, Health Guarantee,’ the campaign will appear on radio, television and press nationally and regionally during June, July and August, as well as digital portals. Councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, said: “We consider the Vega Baja to be the core of the province’s golf offer, as Orihuela has five golf courses, Vistabella Golf, Villamartin Golf Club, Las Ramblas Golf Club, Las Colinas Golf & Country Club and the Real Club de Golf Campoamor Resort.” A promotional video can be viewed through the YouTube channel of Orihuela Tourism, and combines the courses with other tourist attractions, monuments and beaches. It was filmed using a drone during the months of confinement. The Foreigners’ Office in Orihuela Costa, which has been providing telephone assistance to expats throughout the State of Alarm will reopen Wednesday July 1. INVESTMENT: Project to repair water damaged roads. A QUARTER OF A MILLION EUROS is being ploughed into repairing flood damaged roads in Costa Blanca’s Torre Pacheco. The Ministry of Development and Infrastructure has begun reconstruction work of six roads which run through the town and were damaged by torrential rains last September. The scheme is one of 70 projects which the regional administration is carrying out to repair the road network after Dana wreaked havoc, at a
cost of €4.5 million. José Antonio Fernández Lladó of the General Directorate of Roads, together with town mayor, Antonio León, visited the site of the first phase of the scheme on Friday June 12, which involves the reconstruction of the banks and verges. Fernández Lladó said “European aid will help to finance these emergency expenses that both the autonomous community and Murcia Region’s town halls affected by Dana storm have had to face.”

Moving on THE larger markets in Murcia are reopening this week. Puente Tocinos market resumed activity on Monday, June 15, and the stalls of the Sangonera la Verde market will be set up on Saturday, June 20. “A technical committee made up of the Market, Police, Fire, Civil Protection, Personnel and Traffic and Transport services will delimit the spaces and capacities to guarantee safety and prevent contagion and will favour the installation of the greatest possible number of stalls,” the City Council said in a statement. “And throughout the week, technicians will continue with the work and analysis at the two big markets of Fama, which has 600 stalls, and Santa Maria de Gracia, which will open before the end of June.”
€1m aid for business MAZARRON Council has allocated €1 million aid for SMEs, shops and self-employed hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic. Deputy head of Finance, Ginés Campillo, said: “In the coming days, an Information Office, Grants and Subsidies will be opened in order to inform citizens about the various measures of economic and social assistance to address the crisis developed by the Covid-19.”

Solid study THE oncology department at Cartagena’s hospital university is taking part in a nationwide study analysing lung cancer and Covid-19 infection. The aim of the research is to find out if patients with a tumour and coronavirus have a worse prognosis or a higher probability of hospital admission. The Medical Oncology Service of the Santa Lucia General University Hospital is part of the ambitious SOLID clinical study of the Spanish Lung Cancer Group (GECP). The study seeks to find out if patients with lung cancer and Covid-19 infection have a higher mortality rate. It will also make it possible to check the rate of patients who develop antibodies to the virus after their infection, as well as to determine the duration of these antibodies as a method of protection against future re-infections. The SOLID study of 1,000 lung cancer patients was launched due to an absence of scientific data on the impact of Covid-19 on people with the disease, despite nearly 30,000 new cases per year.

HUGE LOSSES: Valencia region’s tourist apartment sector has been hit hard by the health crisis. THE tourist apartment sector is holding out for last minute reservations after losing €55 million due to cancelled fiestas and Easter campaign. Manuel Espinar, president of the Valencia Federation of Hotel and Catering Businesses confirmed the financial impact on the tourist apartment industry, and said businesses “are hoping that last minute bookings will be the lifeline from which to survive the most complicated summer in living memory, much more difficult than in the worst times of the 2007 crisis.”
Meanwhile, Luis Martí, president of the Confederation of Tourist Businesses of the Region, pointed out that for the moment “90 per cent of the hotels are closed,” reports Las Provincias. He asked “why are they going to open if there are no clients, if nobody travels to Valencia? This is an unprecedented situation for which the sector was not prepared.” However, the tourist accommodation sector hopes that “little by little everything will return to normal” and that current data is not really relevant.

Balcony rescue FIREFIGHTERS rescued a woman who took refuge on her balcony in Santiago de la Ribera on the Costa Blanca as fire ripped through her home on Friday June 12. The Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios y Salvamento de la Región de Murcia (CEIS) confirmed the house was ‘burnt out.’ The 112 emergency services received a call at 11.26am from the homeowner, and Local Police, Guardia Civil, CEIS firemen and ambulance with medical personnel from the Civil Protection Service of San Javier were sent to the scene. Firefighters rescued the woman and extinguished the fire, which started in the kitchen. The affected woman did not need medical assistance but was said to have been in shock.

Sad end Everybody to search welcome THE body of a visually impaired man was found in a reservoir on Monday morning (June 15) after an extensive overnight search in Totana. The 50-year-old, well known in the area as an ONCE lottery salesperson, was reported missing on Sunday afternoon after going for a walk early that morning and not returning home. The Guardia Civil, Local Police, the Air Rescue group from the Consortium for Fire Extinction and Rescue, the region's canine rescue units and Civil Protection began a search, with the help of volunteers. And just after 9am on Monday morning, his body was discovered by a water delivery driver in a reservoir next to the Camino de Hondales, close to where the search began. The cause of death is unknown at the moment and the Guardia Civil’s Judicial Police is investigating. Mayor, Juan José Cánovas, has contacted the family to offer support, who are said to be ‘deeply grateful’ for the work carried out by emergency services and neighbours involved in the search.
THE Valencian Community has no intention of restricting the arrival of tourists from other regions. Speaking earlier this week, Generalitat president Ximo Puig said there were no health motives for this type of veto. Nor, he told the Spanish media, was the regional government competent to make that type of decision. After lifting of the State of Alarm on June 21 there will in any case be no more restrictions on travel inside Spain, Puig pointed out. Attack on partner POLICE in Cartagena arrested a 32-year-old after his partner was violently beaten and threatened with a knife in front of a young child. Neighbours in the San Felix area called 112 to report an alleged case of domestic violence on Wednesday night, June 10. Local Police officers went to the property and arrested the 32-year-old on suspicion of beating his partner and threatening her with a knife in front of a child, who he allegedly ‘shook’ during the heated discussion.

Women freed POLICE have made 15 arrests and freed five women forced into prostitution in Cartagena. The criminal organisation was not only involved in the sexual exploitation of the women, but also in drug trafficking at home during the State of Alarm. According to reports, the five females were living in the basement of the house used as a brothel, under strict control and surveillance, and were watched by video surveillance cameras throughout the day. An investigation began in December, and officers discovered the detainees were using a method that they called ‘Telecoca’ to deal various types of drugs such as cocaine, hashish and marihuana during confinement, in addition to the sexual exploitation of women lured to Spain under false pretences and forced into prostution.
AN elderly man from Torre Pacheco suffered burns to his arms and chest after fainting and landing on a glass-ceramic hob while cooking. The Guardia Civil’s Public Safety Prevention unit received a call from the exwife of the 73-year-old man, who said that he had been talking to her for several days over the phone, saying that he was not feeling well and suffering from dizziness and heart problems. She said he was “uttering unintelligible words,” and later not responding to her calls. Officers went to the property, jumped a two-metre perimeter wall and found the front door open. They found the pensioner on the floor struggling to breath, in an agitated state and with burns to his arms and chest.

Get pedalling PILAR GOMEZ MAGAN, spokeswoman for the Ciudadanos party, called on Torrevieja Town Hall to create a municipal bicycle service. Cycling offered quality of life, it cut down on pollution and reduced the dangers of traffic, but the town’s existing network of cycle lanes needed to be extended and improved, Gomez said. The Ciudadanos spokeswoman also pointed out that Torrevieja required specific spaces for parking bicycles in central and strategic areas of the town. Gomez Magan suggested that Torrevieja Town Hall should join the Red de Ciudades por la Bicicleta (Network of bicycle-friendly municipalities), as this would promote the use of bicycles and boost improvements to infrastructure. The network also possessed the Bicicregistro which, with the cooperation of the Local Police and town halls played an important part in tracing lost bicycles and listing those that have been located, the councillor added.
Come out to play THERE is confusion in many municipalities regarding children’s play areas. With the arrival of Phase Three in the State of Alarm de-escalation process, playgrounds can reopen but parents were unsure about restrictions on the number of children using them at any one time. Will these be cleaned more frequently than in the past, they wanted to know.
Play areas in some towns are still cordoned off, others are accessible but on the first morning of Phase Three, some were empty of children while others were full. Many parents were also wary of letting their children use the slides and swings. In Crevillente, Public Spaces councillor Noemi Candela explained to the Spanish media that playgrounds should function at 75 per cent of
their capacity. Equipment had been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected beforehand but the health and safety measures introduced to stop the spread of Covid-19 still needed to be observed in play areas, the councillor explained. Everybody accessing a playground should wear a mask, including children over six, and a 1.5-metre distance should be maintained from others.

Bones identified A fatal SKELETAL remains found last month in Murcia belong to 71year-old Petra Lara, a post-mortem has confirmed. The remains were found by a walker on the banks of the Segura River at La Contraparada on May 5, and a violent death has been ruled out by the Institute of Forensic Medicine. The pensioner left her home in Molina de Segura at 7.30am on March 17, 2018, without any money. Three hours later her family reported her as missing and she was immediately classed as ‘a high-risk disappearance.’ On the first day, more than 100 neighbors, family and friends joined a search operation coordinat-

A WOMAN, 69, and her dog have been killed in an explosion at her home in Orihuela Costa. The cause of the explosion at 8.40am on Friday, June 12, is still unknown. However, the Provincial Fire Brigade suspect the victim may have suffered from Diogenes Syndrome judging by the accumulation of bags, items and waste hoarded inside the property, which they say may have accelerated the spread of the fire. Torrevieja Fire Brigade was despatched to the blaze at the house in Calle Amadeo Vives on the Villamartin urbanisation, where they managed to rescue the woman from inside the property. She sustained serious injuries and was treated by a SAMU medical team but died at the scene. One of her dogs was also killed, and a firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and had to be hospitalised.

THE Ministry of Interior has clarified that it is not ‘mandatory’ or ‘necessary’ for police officers in Spain to record the event in which they use their tasers. Body-worn cameras are an effective way of monitoring police behaviour and ensuring they do not take advantage of their position of power. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior has explained that there is no need for officers to record the event given that “there are other systems which can determine the traceability of these devices without having to affect fundamental rights, data protection of the privacy of individuals. ”These dangerous guns send 22 electrical pulses through your body; typically causing you to fall on the floor, if you are hit again then this electrical

A MIDDLE-AGED man from Salamanca has been hospitalised with CrimeanCongo hemorrhagic fever and infection after being bitten by a tick. He is still very sick and in a critical condition at the
Salamanca Clinic Hospital. Nine other people who have had contact with him are also under observation. The Minister of Health of Castille and Leon, Veronica Casado, has explained that the patient was bitten
at the end of May in a pine forest in the province of Salamanca. However, the infection wasn’t confirmed until June 10. The patient is reported to be suffering from very high temperatures and strong muscle pains. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a viral disease and common symptoms include fever, muscle pains, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding. With the Coronavirus pandemic still around,
many people may think that this is the next epidemic, but that’s not the case, assure health experts. In fact, this is just the fifth CCHF case in Spain since 2016, with the first case ever registered back in 2010 in Extramadura. However, Casado warns that if you are in an area like a pine forest where ticks are present, it’s best to wear a shirt with sleeves, and trousers instead of shorts, as well as insect repellent to prevent any bites.

Critical from Tick bite Dramatic Accident
FATAL CRASH: Car plunged over cliff and was left hanging precariously. A 22-YEAR-OLD woman has died and three passengers injured after their car plunged over a cliff in Girona, and were left hanging precariously during the early hours of June 11. Two passengers managed to free themselves from the wreck, but firefighters were forced to secure the car and rescue the remaining trapped occupants in a dramatic rescue. The driver died and tested positive for alcohol, according to Radio Palamós sources. The horrifying crash occurred after taking a roundabout at Palamos campsite, instead of making the bend, the driver continued in a straight line and drove straight over the cliff. Palamos Local Police, several teams of firefighters and the Emergency Medical System (SEM) were called to the scene, and immediately fixed the car in place to prevent it from falling further. Two of the injured passengers were taken to the Josep Trueta hospital in Girona and a third to the Hebron Valley hospital in Barcelona, according to the Local Police in Palamos.

FATIMA OFKIR REYES, from Barcelona, is the youngest Spanish prisoner abroad and has just been sentenced to 25 years in prison in Oman. Reyes was arrested at the young age of 18; however, she has now spent her 21st birthday behind bars. Reyes has been refused extradition. Her outside contact is only with her mother, who she speaks to every 15 days. She has confessed to her mother that she often thinks about death and pleads for her to get her out. The young girl was arrested after being caught with seven kilos of morphine in the hotel of an Omani sultanate. Her family have appealed to the King of Spain to use his good relationship with the Omani Royal family to help them. Initially, Reyes lawyers were negotiating a three-year sentence, two years of which had already been carried out. However, things took a turn for the worse as the Sultan Qabus passed away and was replaced

Boosting car sales FINANCIAL AID: Spain’s PM proposes to help individuals and the self-employed to buy a new car. THE government has announced that it plans to scrap old vehicles of more than 10 years old, in a bid to boost car sales and a depressed automotive sector. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also announced subsidies of between € 4 0 0 a n d € 4 , 0 0 0 t o w a rd s t h e p u r chase of a new car, depending on pollution emissions. In short, the more environmentally friendly it is, the greater the subsidy. According to Sánchez, “the most urgent action is to revive car sales that will reactivate the factories.” Individual or self-employed people buying a vehicle can expect to receive a subsidy of between €400 and €800, depending on how efficient the model is. Despite opposition, those buying a petrol or diesel car will still be
subsidised, but not as much as someone buying an electric/hybrid car. Those buying an ECO car (hybrid or petrol car), will benefit from financial aid of between €600 or €1,000, respectively, towards a new car purchase. However, those buying cars with zero emissions can expect a subsidy of up to €4,000. H o w e v e r, m a n u f a c t u r e r s a n d dealers must match the amount provided by the government. Subs i d i e s , h o w e v e r, w i l l e x c l u d e t h e purchase of any vehicle that exceeds 120 grams of CO2 emissions, so most SUVs could be left out. Subsidies also only apply to vehicles costing up to €35,000, or €45,000 for people with reduced mobility or cars without emissions.

White King THE very first White Lion to have been born in a Spanish zoo is being looked after by staff as he was rejected by his mother. The lion, which has been named White King by Sevilla zoo keepers, was born on May 31 but was abandoned by its mother after a traumatic birth. White King was born at the Guillena World Park Reserve. Three days later staff were forced to pull him out of the enclosure after being repeatedly snubbed by his mother and suffering with dehydration, hypothermia and hypoglycaemia. Zoo director Juan Luis Malpartida said the lioness, who was brought over from Thailand four years ago, was in labour for two weeks before White King was finally born. Mr Malpartida said the bundle of white fur was being bottle fed and doing well, and getting no end of cuddles from staff.

Slumping Fashion giant ZARA has been forced to close 1,200 shops worldwide as the Spanish fashion powerhouse finds itself in trouble after losing around 44 per cent (€3.3 billion) of physical sales just from February 1 to April 30. Amancio Ortega is one of the richest fashion tycoons in the world, if not the richest Spanish man in the world. His Inditex brand encompasses an array of fashion brands including Zara, Bershka, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, Oysho and more. The fashion industry has also been hard hit by the global pandemic, as their physical stores have been forced to shut and online sales have been slumping. It is understood that a majority of SPAIN’S Ministry of Education released on June 11 new guidelines for schools which are set to reopen in September. Happy to Drive in Spain with Foreign Number Plates?

FOR many years a significant number of expatriates living in Spain have chosen not to take out residency and have dri-
ven cars with foreign number plates, relatively content that they were unlikely to have problems with the authorities.
British passport holders who fit into this category need to understand that Brexit has changed everything and now whilst it was possible for members of European Union states to drive a foreign plated car for 180 days out of 365 in Spain, this will no longer be the case when the UK finally exits the EU. Then you have to register your vehicle or get rid of it. Many may assume that it’s worth taking a risk but the recent seizing of Gibraltar registered cars during lockdown by the Guardia Civil as Gibraltarian workers who have residences in Spain but have never registered the cars in Spain are a perfect example of what could happen. Police Officers don’t need to be brain surgeons to recognise a foreign number plate and it is easy
to stop the driver and demand their papers which may well show that they are residents rather than holiday makers. It can be quite a confusing operation, particularly if you don’t read and speak Spanish, so the use of a local third party to undertake the work for you may be worth considering. Where a vehicle has a manufacturers Certificate of Conformity, the ficha reducida is not required. it will then need an ITV (MOT) test undertaken. A MALAGA made ventilator has received a €25,000 donation from Endesa, to help the firm export ventilators to other nations struck by the virus. Together with Enel Group, the electricity and gas company is also offering international management expertise to help export the product. The ventilator was created thanks to the collaboration between professionals and researchers from the Ministry of Health and Families, the Malaga’s Institute of Biomedical Research, UMA and the Progress and Health Foundation. It is now being successfully manufactured by Fujitsu in Malaga.

DANGEROUS CREAMS: Woman reported a burning sensation after buying this toxic make-up remover. THE Municipal Police in Madrid has shut down a cosmetic store for selling dangerous beauty creams which caused burns when applied. The operation to take down this business, which was operating without a licence and creating hundreds of ‘beauty products’ with unknown substances, began on June 5 after police received a citizen complaint. The victim reported
that she had bought a make-up remover cream at a shop in the Usera neighbourhood, on Calle Nicolas Sanchez in Madrid. When she applied the cream, she noticed a strong stinging sensation which she then realised were burns on her eyelids. The officers went to the establishment to search for the cream and found a long list of infractions were being committed
by the Chinese-owned business. There were dozens of suspicious containers with unknown solvent contents and false brands. When police asked for justification of where the products were bought, the owners could not provide it. Given the number of infractions, police were forced to shut the shop down whilst analysing the creams to verify if they were toxic or not.

COVID TEST: Top Madrid restaurant allegedly makes ‘illegal’ demand. A RESTAURANT in Madrid has allegedly demanded that diners must ‘test negative’ for Covid-19 before they are allowed to make a table reservation at its establishment. On Friday June 12 Madrid’s Ginkgo Restaurant & Sky Bar allegedly told a customer it was obligatory to have a Covid-19 test at least 72 hours prior to making a reservation to dine at the restaurant, and test negative for the disease Furthermore, the establishment is said to have offered the customer the opportunity to have the Covid19 test at the restaurant at a cost of €55.
However, just 24 hours later, the restaurant made an announcement stating that tests are now “voluntary” when making a reservation. Spain’s consumer rights organisation FACUA has pointed out that this practice is “illegal.” Commenting on the incident, FACUA spokesman Rubén Sánchez stated: “They had to backtrack because - amongst other things - this is illegal. “Establishments have to comply with health and safety rules, such as ensuring safe distances between different groups of diners and, of course, ensuring that waiters attend the public with a mask.”

Mother’s love LOCAL POLICE officers in Sevilla have arrested a reckless driver who was endangering lives as she attempted to drive whilst being under the influence. The combination of alcohol and conflict caused the event to turn violent as she tried to attack her mother and the policemen. This careless 30-year-old woman was reported to the police by her own mother who called to say she was about to drive under the influence. The daughter who was clearly drunk and had admitted to consuming cannabis as well had already begun driving her car when the police arrived to stop her. The officer informed the woman that she must carry out a breathalyser test, which she quickly refused. The incident soon took a more violent turn as the driver tried to attack her own mother. The officers stepped in to avoid this happening; however, the drunken woman punched an officer in the throat. She was immediately arrested and charged with crimes against road safety as well as driving under the influence.

Human trafficking
HUMAN TRAFFICKING: Twelve arrests made in connection with an international human trafficking network. THE Mossos d’Esquadra in Barcelona has conducted 12 arrests, the majority of which were of Sub-Saharan and Moroccan nationality who formed part of an international human trafficking network. Searches have been carried out in the provinces of Burgos and Barcelona, as well as overseas. Police carried out three searches in Portugal, two in Germany and one in the Netherlands. Almost 1,000 victims
have been identified in this operation, including women and children. Two kilos of marihuana were seized and around €500,000 in profits was also retained from the criminal network. The operation has been ongoing since 2018 when Guardia Civil officers identified a criminal gang who was in charge of transporting a high number of undocumented migrants to France. The victims included
many pregnant women and children who were recruited to work irregularly and were transferred from Spain to France, Belgium and Germany. The fees for transporting them to these European countries would typically range from €500€750. The criminals were ruthless when it came to payments and were even known to abandon minors during the trips if they could not pay the full amount indebted to them.

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Borbon legacy started in 1700 with Felipe V, however, it has not been an easy path for the Royal house, they have been reinstated on four occasions Juan Carlos I being the last. The latest scandals concerning the former King
Juan Carlos I were related to offshore funds that were undeclared and kept in a Swiss bank alleged to be linked to a high-speed rail project in Saudi Arabia. These claims have jeopardised the House of Borbon once again and triggered off demands for a
republic from the left. Juan Carlos I, was held in high regard for his role in the transition between the dictatorship and the democracy in Spain, with his high point in 1981 when he made a public television broadcast that became a major factor in the military backing down from a coup d’etat. However, later scandals relating to embezzlement involving his daughter, Cristina, and the infamous
hunting of elephants in Botswana led to a barrage of public criticism that is said to have made the former king abdicate in 2014. Moreover, earlier this year Felipe VI relinquished his inheritance, which has been seen by many in Spain as a form of recognising its immoral origin. The Monarchy in Spain has never gained the same affection from the public as the UK has, part-

ly owing to the fact that there has not been a longstanding monarchy rule but also a dictatorship and a time as a republic. The UK press also favours its Royal family whereas in Spain this is not the case. Alfonso XIII abdicated in 1931 when the republican parties won local elections, which were considered to be a plebiscite on the monarchy. Spain has had two republics which were short-
lived, nevertheless, many voices, especially from the left-wing, will take this opportunity to vindicate a new republic. Podemos leader and Spain’s vice president, Pablo Iglesias, has on many occasions stated his clear vision of the republic and leaders from regional communities such as the Basque Country and Catalonia are more than happy to back the proposal.

One of its partners in this project, the Portuguese Euro fund Group has now indicated that it may well be interested in taking over the entire project which will come as a consider able relief to the Torremolinos

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he divide his 90 days? You implied in a previous column that the 90day ‘clock’ for a tourist stay in Spain would only start ticking after the State of Alarm has ended. Does this apply to the 183day rule as well? My flight back to the UK has been cancelled four times now so I have stayed much longer than planned, and if I return in the autumn (flights booked long ago) I could now exceed 183 days for the year. Can I subtract the period of lockdown from my time in Spain when measuring against the 183 days? A S (Costa del Sol)
Think for ward, not backward. The YOU AND THE LAW State of Alarm is IN SPAIN now scheduled to end June 21. From that day you have the right to a tourist stay of 90 days during the following 183 days. These days need not be continuous. If you get a flight June 27, say, using up six of your days, you can return in the autumn with 84 days remaining to you. At the end of that time you must leave Spain and you may not return for at least the following 90 days.

BUSINESS EXTRA Award quashed THE World Bank has stepped in and overturned a compensation claim for €128 million which was awarded against the Spanish government in 2017 following the introduction of a green policy with regards to energy production.

Figures just released by the Bank of Spain show a significant increase to €1.224 trillion (98.9 per cent of Gross Do mestic Product) for the first quarter of
2020. This was 3.5 per cent higher than the last quarter of 2019 and rose even before the lockdown and State of Alarm had in fluenced the results. Second quarter figures will almost cer tainly take the debt above 100 per cent of GDP.

The UK is not the USA
AS you can probably imagine, this week I truly had no idea where to start. Events taking place this past week or so have left me disgusted, saddened, angry and in utter despair. To me, one thing that has been made perfectly clear is that these BLM demonstrations and riots have managed to create more racial divisions in society than any other movement in living memory. People who previously never had a racist bone in their bodies have been virtually thrown into a mix which is dividing neighbours, breaking down friendships and even causing rifts in families. Racism is now rife. So well done all the marchers protesting against… Yep you’ve guessed it… Racism! To be frank, apart from the horrendous and utterly unacceptable way George Floyd was murdered, it seems pretty obvious to me that to present a vicious, armed robbing thug, who was a career criminal high on drugs, as an example of black culture, is hardly the brightest way to gain sympathy or support for a cause, however well intentioned. And do you know something? Despite all the protesting and postulating, I’m still not entirely clear what they actually want? The UK is not the USA.
DEMONSTRATIONS: Have created more racial divisions in society than ever before. In Britain it appears to me that if you are ethnic or black you often seem to have even more opportunities than the white population. Many are chosen for positions specifically because they have these backgrounds! Police recruitment schemes, the BBC and a whole spate of recent TV commercials immediately spring to mind.
You certainly don’t see advertisements asking people to apply for positions purely because they are white, the outcry would be humungous! As far as stop and search is concerned, the problem there is that the percentage of criminality, particularly among young black men, is so high it stands to reason they are going to be tar-
geted. I can’t think of a more waste of police time than patting down old white ladies for weapons or drugs. As for the opposition to a number of statues, these memorials are not exhibited to glorify slavery; they are erected to commemorate the achievements and efforts of historical figures. Ironically many of these ‘plinth occupiers’ are actually responsible for the democratic and liberal society that enables these protests to be allowed in the first place. No this is another blatant attempt to erode and air brush the British heritage and culture out of existence. What they hope to replace it with I can’t imagine! Whatever it turns out to be, you can rest assured it will include no encouragement of free speech, or enjoy the unbiased democratic way of life our ancestors fought and died for. I actually think there is a New World Order approaching, (‘like a thief in the night’!) the instigators of which must be rubbing their hands at the chaos being caused by all this unrest. Get the Onesies out, Orwellian doctrine is on the horizon, and the luvvies, lefties and ‘wokers’ have only themselves to blame. Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

First Stop Italia... Next Stop, the World GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS the most simple pleasures of life slowly return, they suddenly feel more fantastic than before. I walked through Marbella on Monday, filled with mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s great to see people reuniting over coffee, or ice cream. Wide smiles and excited chat. Simple daily life, that we now treasure. On the other, to see the large number of businesses that have been forced to close, was shocking. While the world has entered recession, to see it on such a scale, in a town like Marbella, was an eye opener. A week ago, I stopped by a small restaurant, in the centre of town. The owner, a charming lady, explained how she was trying to get customers to return. Trying everything - cutting prices, setting up a home delivery service and such. I could see the panic in her eyes. She explained that people are simply not going out to eat, as people are nervous. I applauded her strength and determination. I assured her I would return soon with friends. Sadly, when I returned just days later, her business was gone. Life is very mixed right now. Again, a story of two sides. On one, we need tourism to restart, but at the same time, we the residents, are extremely lucky to have Marbella so tranquil, as it heads towards mid-June. Most days I hang out at the beach. It’s a dawn till dusk addiction, and one I am reluctant to give up. Long days spent swimming, lunching and snoozing on an almost empty beach. Los Monteros is my HQ, and I love it. My house is on the beach, so it’s as if, all I need, is all I have. Such a fantastic area, and certainly the best beach in Marbella. Social distancing is respected, and all in all, life’s, as the saying goes, a beach. On Wednesday I was craving pizza. Actually, if I’m honest, I crave pizza most days. At a small local restaurant,
ITALY: Where my heart belongs. Picassa Pizza in El Rosario, I found the best pizza I’ve eaten in years. Chef Ángel is the man you need to know, if you want great pizza. I don’t know how it happened, but I arrived home with two. Well you know, cold pizza for breakfast is always a treat. As if the pizza was leading me back to Italy, I took a call from my friend Edo in Rome, inviting me to a party next month. But how could I get there? Would the airport be open? I knew that I had to get there, no matter what. Those who know me, know my heart belongs in Italy, especially Rome. A city where I’ve lived for many years. A city that fills me with so much happiness, it almost feels like a Fellini movie. After months of lockdown, just like that, it seems I’ll be at home, in Rome again, soon. My heart pumps at the thought. To reboot local economy, doesn’t have to be dinner at a Michelin restaurant. A simple espresso at a bar is a good place to start. An amazing, inexpensive pizza (or two) is also a good plan. I’m a firm believer in tipping. As we emerge from lockdown, into an uncertain world, these days I find myself over tipping, everywhere I go. Perhaps the universe will return the favour somehow. We live in hope!

It should be short and to the point MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I AM pleased to say we are now in Phase 3 of the lockdown de-escalation and things are getting back to a bit of normality. I’ve spent I don’t know how many weeks being nagged by the wife, the kids and my friends which is quite acceptable. But now I’ve had enough because my phone now wants to get involved. Siri starts the day asking if I want to know the local weather. I’ve never asked her for that information. My health App tells me that I’m not doing as many steps as I did last week. Oh really? What’s it got to do with you? I ask my Prime music to play me a song and it then tells me that the version I subscribe to doesn’t have that song. OK fair enough but then it gives me the rub down by telling me the other, more expensive, version has 50 million songs I can choose from. It then proceeds to play me a song
that it thinks I will like. The truth is I don’t like it. I want the song I asked for and because I’m paranoid I think they do it just to wind me up. My food App tells me I’ve nearly hit my calorie count for the day and I haven’t even finished my breakfast yet! I will have to search and find out how to switch these things off. The problem is you have to opt out of so many things instead of opting in. So of course with nowhere to go I’ve been watching a lot more TV than usual. Friends have been recommending series to watch. I do love a bit of TV but mostly I like movies. I can’t be arsed to watch a TV series that goes on for 12 weeks because if I’ve got two or three going at the same time I just forget what’s going on. So I wait ‘til they finish then binge watch them which is much better. But what’s happening now is they don’t know when to finish. Some just do one series too many. Killing Eve for instance should have quit at series 2. My biggest gripe though is that some of these six or eight episoders are just being dragged out and should just be a two-hour movie and done with. Like my articles short and to the point.

Closure for the McCanns - Finally?

THE Madeleine McCann suspect reportedly linked to the disappearance of other young children has reignited interest in the w h o l e s a d s t o r y. T h e same suspect who was ‘discarded’ in 2007 in the original Portuguese inv e s t i g a t i o n . H o w e v e r, that investigation failed to consider mobile phone data among a litany of errors. Kate and Gerry McCann have waited 13 years while Madeleine’s disappearance has spawned conspiracy theories, and panic among other parents. And though a new suspect has undeniably reignited interest in their daughter’s case, the British media were hooked from the moment she went missing. Let’s hope this is the end of their ordeal. about the McCanns. Leaving their children alone was undoubtedly an error of judgement, but they’ve paid the highest price for it. But then, should parents leave their kids in a car when they nip to the shops, or in a pram outside them? But it’s not just about what they did, it’s what the abductor did. And it’s not unusual that a
prime suspect turns up early in a police investigation and is virtually ignored or ‘discarded.’ This has happened in several cases: the Yo r k s h i r e R i p p e r, M i l l y Dowler (in Surrey), Rachel Nickell (in Wimbledon) and others. One distinguishing factor in these particular cases is that the eventual offender’s related crimes have includ-
ed crossing borders into different police regions and, occasionally, different countries. Naturally, there are other criteria that have to be considered such as the expertise of the investigators, their impartiality, their proficiency or motivation (or even lack of financial resources) that per mit them to, or prevent them from, pursuing every line of
enquiry to an effective and appropriate conclusion. Factored into this, pressures from senior officers (as in the Jeremy Bamber case), politicians, public opinion and financial cuts can all have implications for the success or failure of an investigation. Hopefully, after all these years of anguish for the McCann family, Madeleine’s abductor is finally identified. It may bring closure of sorts, but the healing of wounds ... never. DEAR Euro Weekly, Thank god we are going into Phase 3 but I do wonder why are some bars and restaurants holding off opening until July? I thought they would be desperate to open and get bums on seats and start to recover some money. I saw on your Facebook that you are doing something to help small businesses with advertising which is a good idea as it’s hard to really track who is opening and when and maybe some little places will go unlooked and go bust. It really should be a time for businesses to pull out all the stops. If it was me I would be plastering posters up everywhere to get people to come to my restaurant. I mean even before the virus, I was constantly seeing certain shops changing hands every six months. Let’s hope they can keep some to last for a long time. Geoff Sullivan Marbella

SOME readers may have just turned the page every time the McCann parents appeared back in the papers, claiming it was a story with no good outcome, a waste of police resources or sadly that they thought the parents had something to do with their daughter’s disappearance or even death. However, it just goes to show that perseverance can sometimes lead to the discovery of an unturned stone. Last week German authorities identified 43-year-old Christian Brueckner, a German sex offender, as the prime suspect in the little girl’s disappearance. Brueckner, currently in prison in Germany for a drug offence is also appealing a previous conviction for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was abducted Now German police are also looking into if he was involved in the case of a six-year-old German boy, René Hasee, who disappeared in the Algarve in 1996 and fiveyear-old, Inga Gehricke, who disappeared in 2015 near his property in Stendhal, Germany. The authorities are slowly uncovering a list of sexual assaults, child pornography and countless other crimes. How did it take so long to find this man with so many breadcrumbs left behind leading directly to him? He was known in Praia da Luz, he was known to shower children with attention and gifts, friends and ex-girlfriends are now saying they helped him disappear, or heard him hint that he had done something, one even took ownership of his car. Why has it finally taken so long to put this puzzle together? There definitely seems to be more people to blame for hiding this high profile story and luckily for the heartbroken McCann parents it should clear them of any doubt.

The medical system appears to have done their job and I have no complaints though I know some have complained about how strict lockdown is and was. The point is they took action to get the job done no matter if some of it was unpopular, they made the hard decisions. In contrast, the UK is a shambles. I am a Conservative supporter but the government has been totally inept and cowardly in their decisions, it is not a popularity contest, making the tough decisions and leadership seems beyond them. The UK is now in the position of more deaths in a week than all 27 EU countries combined. The blame lies at the feet of an impotent, incompetent government. Those who may think I am being ‘disloyal’ to my home country need a reality check. It would be stupid to praise Boris and co for this mess just because they are British. They are much better than reading a boring list printed in other places that you easily forget. At least the colourful images stick in your mind. BREAKING NEWS: UK Plunging Into Widely Expected Recession Spain will be even worse as unemployment levels will reach unprecedented levels. VIEWPOINT By EWN columnist - John Sharples. A serious ramble I’m not sure why the right wing Imperialists are getting hung up on statues and street names - If someone put a statue of Jimmy Saville up on our street to commemorate his good works for children’s charity I wouldn’t complain if someone came along now and took it down. They’re red herrings though, who has learnt history from statues or street names, very few I suspect, yet more people will have learnt the terrible history of Colston and the slave trade from the taking down of his statue than ever learned anything about it at school - I looked at the history syllabus for this year and it’s no different than I was taught in the 60’s - basically glorification of the British Empire and all the good work Britain did which is fine, but no mention of all of the really terrible things Britain did during Colonisation / so personally I don’t condone vandalism and I confess it’s getting a bit silly on both sides with right wing extremists due to protest and look for trouble around monuments this weekend, but I care less about statues and street names other than I hope what is being done short term, whether people believe it’s right or wrong might lead to some change in education and the longer term knowledge of future generations - we shouldn’t continue to whitewash history in our education, literature and learning.

The brief ceremonial event traditionally held before formal birthday celebrations start, took place at 11am on June 13 at Windsor Castle. Although Trooping the Colour usually takes place at Buckingham Palace, the scaled-back version had to be moved to Windsor Castle, where the Queen is in isolation with Prince Philip. The small ceremonial event was designed in just two weeks to allow for social distancing among soldiers. The traditional Trooping the Colour event had already been cancelled
due to Covid-19 restrictions. Trooping the Colour ordinarily sees thousands flock to Buckingham Palace, lining the Mall to see the pageantry of the ceremony. However, this year the event meant that guardsmen had to maintain social distancing while standing in ceremonial formation. Although a much quieter birthday than the Queen is used to, there was still sufficient ‘pomp and circumstance’ to make it a memorable day. The Royal Family are spending the rest of the day in quiet celebration of Her Majesty’s 94th birthday, with many members joining the party ‘remotely.’
