WITH Covid-19 finally beginning to dissipate as residents adhere to strict protective measures the Spanish government now consider the country a safe zone. All they ask is that Spain’s residents follow their instructions for our own good and to respect the lives of the more than 27,000 people that were lost and celebrate the over 150,000 lives that were saved. At the beginning of April Spain ranked the highest in the world for coronavirus fatalities, but due to the quick and carefully planned actions of the country’s very own hero Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, we have managed to drop to sixth

place with only 25 fatalities in the last seven days, at the time of going to press. Sanchez enabled us to put our trust in him as he guided us through the crisis to provide the best care for his countrymen and adopted residents. THE Beach and Tourist Infrastructure councillor of Campello Julio Oca called on beachgoers to use the walkways correctly. The walkways that give access to all Campello beaches are marked with an arrow indicating whether they should be used to access or leave the beach. Despite the signs,
Julio Oca admitted the majority of people are not yet using them correctly. “We are still at the first phase of the measures we are introducing but it would be preferable for beachgoers to use the walkways in the right direction,” he said. “This would avoid obstructing other users and guarantee correct distancing.”
The Beaches and Infrastructure department is continuing throughout this week to continue marking the walkways and putting up signs on Campello’s beaches and coves. These detail the regulations introduced to halt Covid-19, announced Oca, emphasising that these include a ban on smoking on the beach.

Bad for grapes HAIL in inland Medio Vinalopo has damaged the area’s principal crop of dessert grapes. Worst-affected were early varieties Aspe, Monforte Del Cid and Novelda, where growers reported losses of between 30 per cent and 40 per cent. In contrast, Agost has also seen losses to this year’s grape harvest although
this was due to rabbits eating the young shoots. “One of the worst plagues for years was seen in 2019,” the Asaja agricultural union told the local Spanish media, attributing the huge number to the lockdown period during the State of Alarm when hunting was banned.

LAST weekend, before the June 15 reopening of Benidorm’s beaches, Mayor Toni Perez revealed the town hall’s Beach Safety plan. To guarantee their secure use, the Levante and Poniente beaches have been split into 20 sectors, 12 giving free access to the sands. These are divided into 5,122 plots measuring 16 square metres which can be used by up to four peo-
ple. Plots are grouped in a green zone for the over70’s and a blue zone for other age groups although Perez stressed that the elderly may access blue zones if they prefer. Eight sectors were allocated to the Beaches concessionary, which can install 5,578 sunbeds, 875 fewer than in the past. Perez clarified that the concessionary’s contract had been modified to incorporate the new condi-
Name-change THE town hall of Pedreguer intends to remove Juan Carlos I’s name from a local street. Father of the present king, Felipe VI, he abdicated in his son’s favour in 2014 and is now under investigation to clarify accusations of illegal and undeclared - commissions linked to Spain’s contract to build the MedinaMecca high speed railway in Saudi Arabia. The town hall’s announcement coincided with a similar motion from the anti-system party CUP which also wants a popular vote to choose a new name for the street. The town hall revealed that it was already investi-
gating the procedures for removing the name of Juan Carlos. These involve approval from a plenary council meeting, a circular letter to properties on the street and Correos, a statement to Spain’s Statistics Institute (INE) and a notification to the Catastro property register. The town hall revealed the name change will also affect the 276 registered occupants of Avenida Juan Carlos I’s 106 properties when renewing ID cards or driving licences. Standing orders will have to be modified at banks and, in the case of businesses, web pages and printed matter.

Back to nature PLANS to reopen Denia Castle to the public on June 15 have been delayed, the town hall explained. This has been put back to June 26 owing to the weeds that grew unchecked while the castle was closed during lockdown. These are now being removed, but there is also an abundance of seagull droppings which require ‘intensive’ cleaning, especially on handrails and information panels. Work is progressing, municipal sources said, but will take until June 26, municipal sources said.

Looking at the Schengen and EU states, the following rules currently apply to UK citizens (although there are some exceptions): Countries allowing free entry with no quarantine Belgium, Ger many,
Italy, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland. Countries allowing free entry with 14-day quarantine Austria, Bulgaria, Estonia, France, Greece, Ireland (unless entering from Northern Ireland), Latvia, Romania, Slovenia. Countries currently not allowing entry for UK citizens Croatia (unless there is a valid reason to travel), Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Slovakia (unless holding a negative Covid-19 test less than 96 hours old).
Sports return Boar clash THE sports complex in La Nucia has reopened to the public although, like the last three months, the first day was atypical. The installation opened at 6.30am but closed at 2.30pm for the Levante-Sevilla La Liga match which was played behind closed doors at the Camilo Cano stadium. All the Valencia-based team’s remaining 20192020 league matches will be played in La Nucia and possibly some of 2020-2021 season, as its own Ciutat de Valencia stadium is still being renovated. Initially it appeared that UK travellers would not be allowed to enter Spain on June 21 as it was believed that only Schengen members were to be welcome (except for Portugal which has chosen to wait until July 1). U3A, the New Normal VERITY WADDELL, president of Calpe U3A organised a meeting for all local U3A presidents. This was well-attended with representatives from Denia, Javea, Teulada-Moraira and Vall de Pop. The meeting, which Verity chaired and hosted on Zoom, was received with much enthusiasm as it was two years since a meeting for presidents, although originally this was intended to be an annual event. As all U3As operate slightly differently, it was interesting to compare and exchange ideas, while the ‘new normal’ and how to deal with it was a big topic for discussion. Wendy Down, vicepresident of U3A Calpe pointed out that as more members are recruited from the next generation of retirees, they will be more computer-savvy. Using the internet for communicating and for groups will become more popular, she predicted.
A 59-YEAR-OLD motorcyclist was admitted to Gandia hospital with injuries to his chest and shoulder after a collision with a wild boar. The accident occurred on the CV-675 road at 6.30am and the victim was later pronounced in a stable condition by hospital sources.

Facebook saves the day A GROUP of cyclists, thirsty after a mountain run, stopped recently for drink at a Benitachell bar. Going outside afterwards, one of them was horrified to discover that his German-made Canyon Strive mountain bike, worth €3,700, had gone. He reported the bike as missing to the Guardia Civil the next morning, also spreading the word and uploading a photo of the bike on his social media pages. At mid-day he received a message from a Teulada-Moraira resident, who said he had just seen a group of boys with an identical bike. The Local Police and Guardia Civil were alerted and after checking up on the TeuladaMoraira group, found that the bicycle was the same, matching the details and documentation they had been given. The bicycle was soon returned to its rightful owner, but meanwhile the 20-year-old who took it has been detained and charged with theft.

Blue Flags are flying high THE beaches of the Valencian community received 134 Blue Flags this year, of which 86 went to Alicante Province resorts. Thirty-two of these correspond to municipalities in the l’Alacanti area which, despite its name, does not include Alicante City as well as the Marina Baja and Marina Alta. The European Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) awards Blue Flags to beaches that meet its standards regarding conservation, accessibility, hygiene standards and the quality of its services on the beaches, marinas and yacht clubs. This year no beaches in these three areas lost their flags, while Albir has retained its coveted Blue Flag for 33 consecutive years since the awards were first introduced in 1987. Generalitat’s knuckles rapped SPAIN’S Supreme Court upheld an earlier sentence rescinding some articles in the regional government’s Institutional Use of Valenciano decree. Earlier, Valencia’s Upper Court of Justice (TSJ) revoked some of the articles included in the decree on the grounds that this excluded Spanish. The regional govern-
ment’s legal advisers, Abogacia de la Generalitat and STEPV-IV union representing teachers lodged an appeal against the TSJ decision, hoping that some of the revoked articles could be readmitted. These included the obligatory use of Valenciano for data processing and for signage used in official buildings and public roads. Tenders for regional gov-
ernment contracts would have needed to be submitted in Valenciano and public sector employees would have been obliged to address each other in the regional language. Had the decrees questioned articles gone ahead they would have ‘completely’ prevented the coexistence of the Spanish language within the Administration.
A very special birthday ESTHER SANCHEZ GOMIS celebrated her 100th birthday in the Marina Baja town of Orxeta. The town hall marked the special day with a small fiesta, while observ ing all the necessary health and safety measures. “We would have liked a biggeer fiesta but the present situation obliged us to organise a more intimate event, although we still wanted to celebrate this important day with Esther,” said Orxeta’s mayor, Jose Vicente Ferriz. “Their years of accumulated experience and wisdom oblige us to treat our elders with love and we are filled with happiness to see Esther so full of health and energy,” Ferriz declared.

Memory restored
THE Asociacion de Familiares de Represaliados por el Franquismo (ARFO) has been formally constituted in Oliva. The launch was attended by Oliva’s mayor David Gonzalez, the town hall’s Democratic Memory councillor Josep Escriva, deputy mayor Ana Morell and the municipal spokeswoman for the Compromis party, Yolanda Balaguer. This was followed by the ARFO’s first meeting where Gonzalez and Escriva were guests of honour, as they emphasised the municipality’s commitment to recovering Oliva’s past. “Founding ARFO is an important milestone because it is the Valencian Community’s first association to be constituted with terms that refer to the relatives of those who suffered reprisals after the Civil War,” Josep Escriva declared. ARFO’s principal objective is to restore the town’s democratic memory, explained the association’s president, Teresa Llopis. “This memory belongs to us all and has nothing to do with political colours,” she said. “As democrats we are obliged to recover and pay homage to that part of our history, as other countries do in Europe and the rest of the world.”

Nine-month sentence THE Supreme Court’s Military Section confirmed a nine-month sentence for a Guardia Civil member who insulted a superior in Gandia. “You are damned inept, a useless s**t you wouldn’t use for a wad in a shotgun,” the Guardia Civil told the corporal he was patrolling with. Both belonged to the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Unit, Seprona, and came across an irrigation channel which was filled with water that smelt of sewage. The corporal declined to investigate further, prompting the other’s diatribe, which he recorded and presented to his superior office at the Guardia Civil post.

IFACH: Complicated rescue in a beachless area.
THE reopening of Calpe’s beaches coincided with the rescue of a swimmer in difficulties near the Peñon de Ifach. Calpe’s lifesaving service, Local Police, Guardia Civil and Fire Brigade converged at Roca Plana after the 112 Emergency Services were alerted when a 23-year-old was seen struggling to emerge from the rough sea. Although the red flag that bans swimming had been hoisted at the adjoining El Raco beach, one of
t h e l i f e g u a rd s w e n t i n t o t h e s e a and, after reaching the young man, gave him a rescue buoy to keep him afloat until the lifesavers’ boat arrived. At the time of the rescue, lifeguards were present on the Cantal-Roig, Fossa and Arenal beaches but starting on Monday June 15, the service will include the El Raco and Puerto Blanco beaches where they will be on duty between 11am and 7pm throughout the summer.
ANOTHER five volunteers enrolled in Proteccion Civil in Benitachell. They join the local group in carrying out fire-watching in the town’s wooded areas, providing backup for the Local Police and fire brigade, helping with crowd-control and attending emergencies. Benitachell’s Public Safety councillor Maria Jose Ivars and Proteccion Civil expressed satisfaction with the results of the latest recruitment campaign. “We are very glad to welcome five more people into our great family and I am sure that they will enjoy being volunteers,” the local Proteccion Civil chief declared. “Helping others is very gratifying,” he added.
It’s pool time THE three municipal swimming pools of Alcoy reopen on June 29 for the summer. They will remain open until August 30 and provide temporary employment for 20 people, including lifesavers and ticket-office attendants.

More access ALTEA is to have another entrance to the L’Espigo beach, announced Infrastructures councillor Roque Ferrer. It will give direct access to l’Espigo from the section of promenade that links the Garganes stream and the Algar river-mouth. This has been carried out following repeated requests from residents wanting to reach the beach from this part of the seafront. “Work should be finished by the start of the summer season and in any case it will have neither visual nor environmental impact,” Ferrer said. “Having received several requests for a new access to the l’Espigo and after studying the zone and the different possibilities, we approached the

U3A Vall del Pop eases forward AS Spain and the Vall del Pop slowly emerge from lockdown, U3A leaders are looking closely at what can be offered to members. Thispo must still comply with the Covid-19 rules and with so many activities taking place in municipal halls, there is no way forward at present. The U3A Vall del Pop president, Bob Welham, is hoping the new normality will enable the first General Assembly of the new 2020-2021 to take place in September, with more news on this to follow nearer the time. Most of the U3A groups intend to resume in September, although the Sugarcraft group continues to meet and the Canasta group should restart after the end of June. Schoolkids get their ‘orla’ photos THE town hall of La Nucia allocated €3,000 for group graduation photos for pupils at local infant, primary and secondary schools. Education councillor Sergio Villalba revealed that the town hall also cooperated with technical input and equipment so that pupils did not forgo their traditional ‘orla’ photos. La Nucia Town Hall continued to support both education and families by collaborating with this important milestone in pupils’ lives, Villalba said, although this year’s was atypical owing to the Covid-19 crisis.

LA FUSTERA beach in Benissa has received a double distinction. The beach has a Blue Flag for meeting the exacting standards required by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and was recognised by the Association for Environmental Education and Consumer Affairs (ADEAC), co-founder of FEE which manages its Spanish programme. La Fustera has received ADEAC’s
ALTHOUGH the Charity Shop of Calpe has been closed for more than 12 weeks it has still supported the local community. During a time when help was most needed, the Charity Shop donated €4,000 in vouchers for fresh food that were split evenly between Caritas and Calpe’s Red Cross.
Thematic Distinction for the excellence of its lifesaving service, making it one of the four safest beaches in Spain, along with Conil de la Frontera (Cadiz), Miramar (Valencia) and Sanxenxo (Pontevedra). The beach’s lifeguards carry out regular rescue drills, are equipped with rapid intervention boat and vehicles and provide an assisted seabathing service for those with mobility problems.
Lockdown donations The shop is unlikely to reopen until September, partly for safety reasons but also due to a flood which damaged the ceiling and ruined much of the stock.
The charity therefore urgently needs donations of clothes, shoes, household items and small pieces of furniture. These can be dropped off at the shop on Monday and Thursday mornings between 10am and 12 noon in Galerias Mar Azul on Avenida Gabriel Miro.

White King THE very first White Lion to have been born in a Spanish zoo is being looked after by staff as he was rejected by his mother. The lion, which has been named White King by Sevilla zoo keepers, was born on May 31 but was abandoned by its mother after a traumatic birth. White King was born at the Guillena World Park Reserve. Three days later staff were forced to pull him out of the enclosure after being repeatedly snubbed by his mother and suffering with dehydration, hypothermia and hypoglycaemia. Zoo director Juan Luis Malpartida said the lioness, who was brought over from Thailand four years ago, was in labour for two weeks before White King was finally born. Mr Malpartida said the bundle of white fur was being bottle fed and doing well, and getting no end of cuddles from staff.

COVID VACCINE: The deal will see up to 400 million doses being made available. BRITISH drugmaker AstraZeneca signed a contract to supply the EU region with its potential vaccine against Covid-19. The pharma firm signed a deal which will see up to 400 million doses of the vaccine being made available to EU member countries. The vaccine, which is being developed by the University of Oxford, will be manufactured by AstraZeneca, who are already looking at ways of scaling-
up the operation. The vaccine is to be supplied on a not-for-profit basis during the pandemic and deliveries will start by the end of the year. ‘Andalucia respira’ A MALAGA made ventilator has received a €25,000 donation from Endesa, to help the firm export ventilators to other nations struck by the virus. Together with Enel Group, the electricity and gas company is also offering international management expertise to help export the product. The ventilator was created thanks to the collaboration between professionals and researchers from the Ministry of Health and Families, the Malaga’s Institute of Biomedical Research, UMA and the Progress and Health Foundation. It is now being successfully manufactured by Fujitsu in Malaga. The first 300 units have already been despatched to the Andalucian Health Service, while the rest are being sold across Spain. In addition, there are several countries, particularly in Latin America, such as Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Ecuador that have expressed interest in buying the ventilators Endesa wants to help ‘Andalucía Respira’ reach these countries affected by the coronavirus, which is why it has made the donation and offering its expertise to the firm. It also wants to help ‘generate wealth and employment in the province of Malaga.’
Forced to Close THE Urban Guard in Barcelona was forced to limit the access to four different beaches on Saturday June 13 after they all reached 80 per cent capacity (the maximum al-
lowed during the de-escalation plan). Sources from the city council have explained that, after reaching maximum occupation, incoming bathers were prevent-
ed from accessing these beaches to avoid dangerous crowds. In two of the closed beaches the permitted limit was reached at around 5.00pm, and the remaining beaches the maximum capacity was reached at around 6.15pm. The influx of beachgoers is controlled by a series of sensors which calculate the occupied volume of the beaches and can be consulted in real-time on the city council web: https://www.barcelona.ca t/ca/que-pots-fer-abcn/banys-i-platges. Once the beach reaches maximum occupation, 80 per cent, the sensors will activate the information mechanism, letting residents know that this beach is already full. Boosting car sales THE government has announced that it plans to scrap old vehicles of more than 10 years old, in a bid to boost car sales and a depressed automotive sector. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also announced subsidies of between € 4 0 0 a n d € 4 , 0 0 0 t o w a rd s t h e p u r chase of a new car, depending on pollution emissions. In short, the more environmentally friendly it is, the greater the subsidy. According to Sánchez, “the most urgent action is to revive car sales that will reactivate the factories.” Individual or self-employed people buying a vehicle can expect to receive a subsidy of between €400 and €800, depending on how efficient the model is. Despite opposition, those buying a petrol or diesel car will still be
subsidised, but not as much as someone buying an electric/hybrid car. Those buying an ECO car (hybrid or petrol car), will benefit from financial aid of between €600 or €1,000, respectively, towards a new car purchase. However, those buying cars with zero emissions can expect a subsidy of up to €4,000. H o w e v e r, m a n u f a c t u r e r s a n d dealers must match the amount provided by the government. Subs i d i e s , h o w e v e r, w i l l e x c l u d e t h e purchase of any vehicle that exceeds 120 grams of CO2 emissions, so most SUVs could be left out. Subsidies also only apply to vehicles costing up to €35,000, or €45,000 for people with reduced mobility or cars without emissions.

‘Let’s end Bullfighting’ LEWIS HAMILTON’S damning criticism of bullfighting was a red rag to one of the pin-ups of Spain’s bullrings. Cayetano Rivera has hit back at the six-time Formula One champion for his online comments on the Spanish tradition. “Spain, this is truly disgusting," Hamilton posted on Instagram alongside an image put out by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) association of a bull killed in the ring with the message ‘Don’t’ let torture masquerade as culture.’ "Children in Spain learn to torture and kill bulls at the age of 14,” he told his 17 million Instagram followers. “We ask the Ministry of Education to close bullfighting schools immediately, you can help by sharing this request." Battle for eviction
Mossos d’Esquadra. A GROUP of neighbours in Barcelona got together to physically and verbally confront a flat of young migrants they say are responsible for robberies and attacks on the elderly in hopes of expelling them from the apartment and out of town. This incident quickly became tense when more than a dozen neighbours in Premia de Mar, Barcelona, went to a flat full of young migrants and physically tried to get them out. The Mossos d’Esquadra were alerted to a fight in the Avenida Luis Companys which involved stone-throwing and tried to intervene. The Mossos confirmed that the group of neighbours had managed to enter the flat and cause significant damage; how-
ever, the police presence did little to intimidate the neighbours who were rallied up. All this commotion led to various clashes between the group of assailants and the police, as five officers were left injured. The Mossos helped move the three young occupants from the assaulted flat to another location, although no arrests were made, the police have opened an investigation in order to identify the attackers. According to local sources, this group of neighbours considered themselves to be a sort of vigilante watch group in the area. Their intention was to hold the migrants accountable for the increase of robberies and assaults on the elderly in the area.

Human trafficking THE Mossos d’Esquadra in Barcelona has conducted 12 arrests, the majority of which were of Sub-Saharan and Moroccan nationality who formed part of an international human trafficking network. Searches have been carried out in the provinces of Burgos and Barcelona, as well as overseas. Police carried out three searches in Portugal, two in Germany and one in the Netherlands. Almost 1,000 victims have been identified in this operation, including women and children. Two kilos of marihuana were seized and around
€500,000 in profits was also retained from the criminal network. The operation has been ongoing since 2018 when Guardia Civil officers identified a criminal gang who was in charge of transporting a high number of undocumented migrants to France. The victims included many pregnant women and children who were recruited to work irregularly and were transferred from Spain to France, Belgium and Germany. The fees for transporting them to these European countries would typically range from €500€750.

In today’s article, we want to infor m consumers and clients of banks in Spain, that if they took out life insurance with their bank and paid the premium in advance and at the start of the mortgage loan, if the loan has been cancelled for any reason (even lack of payment), it is very possible that they could recover part of the premium paid although
unfortunately banks do not normally inform their customers of this possibility. In legal terms, it is logical, that if you pay an amount of money for life insurance to cover you for a certain period of time, if the loan is cancelled, the premium that you have paid in advance has not been consumed in its entirety, since for part of the length of the loan, you will not have the insurance coverage, as the loan has been cancelled early. Many banks argue that this possibility of claiming for the proportional refund of the life insurance premium linked to the mortgage, in the event of an early cancellation, is only possible when the loan is
paid in advance, but not when the loan is terminated for lack of the client’s payment, but they are wrong. As stated by the Provincial Court of Barcelona in the decision 724/2018, it must be understood that the insured has the right to be returned the proportional part of the corresponding insurance premium in the event of early cancellation of the loan. This is the case if the loan ends due to nonpayment of the instalments, unless it is specified in the insurance contract that in case of non-payment the client would not be entitled to such refund. Even if that was the case, denying this possibility would be an abusive clause, since an in-
surer cannot pretend to stop the coverage without allowing the insured to recover the part of the premium for the time where the insurance coverage is not in place, independently of the reason of the cancellation of the mortgage. COVID TEST: Top Madrid restaurant allegedly makes ‘illegal’ demand. A RESTAURANT in Madrid has allegedly demanded that diners must ‘test negative’ for Covid-19 before they are allowed to make a table reservation at its establishment. On Friday June 12 Madrid’s Ginkgo Restaurant & Sky Bar allegedly told a customer it was obligatory to have a Covid-19 test at least 72 hours prior to making a reservation to dine at the restaurant, and test neg-
ative for the disease Further more, the establishment is said to have offered the customer the opportunity to have the Covid-19 test at the restaurant at a cost of €55. However, just 24 hours later, the restaurant made an announcement stating that tests are now “voluntary” when making a reservation. Spain’s consumer rights organisation FACUA has pointed out
that this practice is “illegal.” Commenting on the incident, FACUA spokesman Rubén Sánchez stated: “They had to backtrack because - amongst other things - this is illegal. “Establishments have to comply with health and safety rules, such as ensuring safe distances between different groups of diners and, of course, ensuring that waiters attend the public with a mask.”

No mercy FATIMA OFKIR REYES, from Barcelona, is the youngest Spanish prisoner abroad and has just been sentenced to 25 years in prison in Oman. Reyes was arrested at the young age of 18; however, she has now spent her 21st birthday behind bars. Reyes has been refused extradition. Her outside contact is only with her mother, who she speaks to every 15 days. She has confessed to her mother that she often thinks about death and pleads for her to get her out. The young girl was arrested after being caught with seven kilos of morphine in the hotel of an Omani sultanate. Her family have appealed to the King of Spain to use his good relationship with the

A MIDDLE-AGED man from Salamanca has been hospitalised with CrimeanCongo hemorrhagic fever and infection after being bitten by a tick. He is still very sick and in a critical condition at the
Salamanca Clinic Hospital. Nine other people who have had contact with him are also under observation. The Minister of Health of Castille and Leon, Veronica Casado, has explained that the patient was bitten
at the end of May in a pine forest in the province of Salamanca. However, the infection wasn’t confirmed until June 10. The patient is reported to be suffering from very high temperatures and strong muscle pains. Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a viral disease and common symptoms include fever, muscle pains, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding. With the Coronavirus pandemic still around,
many people may think that this is the next epidemic, but that’s not the case, assure health experts. In fact, this is just the fifth CCHF case in Spain since 2016, with the first case ever registered back in 2010 in Extramadura. However, Casado warns that if you are in an area like a pine forest where ticks are present, it’s best to wear a shirt with sleeves, and trousers instead of shorts, as well as insect repellent to prevent any bites.

FATAL CRASH: Car plunged over cliff and was left hanging precariously. A 22-YEAR-OLD woman has died and three passengers injured after their car plunged over a cliff in Girona, and were left hanging precariously during the early hours of June 11. Two passengers managed to free themselves from the wreck, but firefighters were forced to secure the car and rescue the remaining trapped occupants in a dramatic rescue. The driver died and tested positive for alcohol, according to Radio Palamós sources. The horrifying crash occurred after taking a roundabout at Palamos campsite, instead of making the bend, the driver continued in a straight line and drove straight over the cliff. Palamos Local Police, several teams of firefighters and the Emergency Medical System (SEM) were called to the scene, and immediately fixed the car in place to prevent it from falling further. Two of the injured passengers were taken to the Josep Trueta hospital in Girona and a third to the Hebron Valley hospital in Barcelona, according to the Local Police in Palamos.

Having to comply with social distancing regulations will entail lower takings, argued Benidorm mayor Toni Perez, and waiving the Costas fee would help to offset concessionaries’ losses.
OVER the last 18 months, more than 5,000 documents, files and tourist leaflets have been added to the Municipal Archive. These may now be viewed by the public by appointment, said Benidorm’s Historic Heritage councillor Ana Pellicer. “A municipal archive is very useful not only for historic research but also for the functioning of the local administration,” she explained. “In many cases it can help private individuals and companies with their activities.” The archive now contains documents related to Art, Culture and Tourist Promotion between 1974-1978 as well as tax regulations from 1963 until 1991.
Under surveillance WATER company Hidraqua and Benidorm Town Hall will monitor the resort’s wastewater to detect the possible presence of SARS-CoV-2. This is the virus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, and Dinaspsis - the innovation centre belonging to Hidraqua and parent company SUEZ - will follow the evolution of the virus in Benidorm’s wastewater. This will give early warning of a new outbreak, explained Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez as he announced the Covid-19 City Sentinel project. “Benidorm is working constantly to find the solutions that will allow it to position itself as a safe and innovative tourism model adapted to the new reality,” Perez said. “Launching Sentinel is another example of these efforts.” The collaboration of experts headed by Dr Albert Bosch, an internationally-recognised specialist in aquatic virology adscribed to the University of Barcelona, guarantees the validation of the samples taken from Benidorm’s sewers, the mayor added. Benidorm was the first Valencian Community municipality to use this highly developed method, he pointed out. “Furthermore, it is brought here by a group with more than 20 years’ experience in this type of epidemiological scrutiny of wastewater,” he added.
The archive also contains digitalised 12 official registers and the minutes of council meetings. The earliest goes back to 1732 and they continue, although at irregular intervals, until 1903. “These tomes are essential to preserving the history of Benidorm, but it is also important that they are available to the public,” the councillor said.
Four men hospitalised A BRAWL between two Benidorm clans ended with four people in Villajoyosa hospital. The same four were also arrested and charged with affray and causing bodily harm. The National Police were called to the rundown but soon-to-be-developed Armanello area as the fight escalated and what sources close to the case described as “blunt force weapons” were used. Two men, one with “considerable head injuries,” were sent directly to Villajoyosa while two others, initially taken to Benidorm’s health centre, were later transferred to the hospital. At least five National Police, Local Police and Guardia Civil patrol cars were spotted parked outside the hospital where officers were posted to prevent further trouble between the warring clans as relatives visited their injured family members.

ALL CHANGE: Vicente Arques and councillors visit the Forum. ALFAZ’S mayor Vicente Arques recently visited the Forum Mare Nostrum senior citizens’ complex, which changed hands not long ago. Arques, Health and Social Welfare councillor, Marisa Cortes, and Other Nationalities councillor, Martine Mertens, were met and shown round by the president of the Forum’s board of directors, Emilio Vidal, and the manager Rafa Miro.
The Forum, built 20 years ago, has 237 apartments and 287 residents, the majority of whom are British, with others from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Norway and although only a few from Spain. Subdued event for Sports Schools ALMOST 1,000 children attended Alfaz’s municipal sports schools during 2019-2020 school year. They have taken part in activities covering 22 different areas which have included athletics, chess, breakdance, golf, the Valencian ballgame and tennis. Usually there would have been an end-of-term fiesta at the municipal sports centre attended by more than 2,000 including instructors, participants and their families. Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the closing act had to be a simple ceremony held in the grounds of the municipal swimming pool with the presence of Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques, Sports councillor Oscar Perez and representatives from the municipal schools. Instead of the usual formal presentation of diplomas, these were given out to each schools’ representative who will later present them to the pupils.

THE electricity bill of the town hall of Calpe fell to €45,587 between January 1 and May 4. Almost 14 per cent less than 2019’s first quarter, this was partly due to closing most municipal offices and buildings during the State of Alarm. The municipality’s energy-saving plan also
played an important part in the savings after streetlamps were reduced by a third in some districts, following a General Services review. After evaluating where reduced lighting would have the least impact on residents, streetlighting was reduced along the Princesa de Asturias environmental walk,
which was closed to the public when lockdown measures were at their strictest, as well as the promenades, Avenida de Rumania and Avenida Generalitat.
Tax break COUNCILLORS of Calpe voted in favour of reducing the rubbish-collection tax for local businesses by 30 per cent to assist them in relaunching the local economy after months of inactivity during lockdown.

DANGEROUS CREAMS: Woman reported a burning sensation after buying this toxic make-up remover. THE Municipal Police in Madrid has shut down a cosmetic store for selling dangerous beauty creams which caused burns when applied. The operation to take down this business, which was operating without a licence and creating hundreds of ‘beauty products’ with unknown substances, began on June 5 after police received a citizen complaint. The victim reported
that she had bought a make-up remover cream at a shop in the Usera neighbourhood, on Calle Nicolas Sanchez in Madrid. When she applied the cream, she noticed a strong stinging sensation which she then realised were burns on her eyelids. The officers went to the establishment to search for the cream and found a long list of infractions were being committed
by the Chinese-owned business. There were dozens of suspicious containers with unknown solvent contents and false brands. When police asked for justification of where the products were bought, the owners could not provide it. Given the number of infractions, police were forced to shut the shop down whilst analysing the creams to verify if they were toxic or not.

Slumping Fashion giant ZARA has been forced to close 1,200 shops worldwide as the Spanish fashion powerhouse finds itself in trouble after losing around 44 per cent (€3.3 billion) of physical sales just from February 1 to April 30. Amancio Ortega is one of the richest fashion tycoons in the world, if not the richest Spanish man in the world. His Inditex brand encompasses an array of fashion brands including Zara, Bershka, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, Oysho and more. The fashion industry has also been hard hit by the global pandemic, as their physical stores have been forced to shut and online sales have been slumping. It is understood that a majority of SPAIN’S Ministry of Education released on June 11 new guidelines for schools which are set to reopen in September. After months of remote learning and living in some of the harshest lockdown conditions in Europe, a return to school will be welcome to both children and parents alike. Spain’s cautious ap-

Happy to Drive in Spain with Foreign Number Plates? FOR many years a significant number of expatriates living in Spain have chosen not to take out residency and have driven cars with foreign number plates, relatively content that they were unlikely to have problems with the authorities. British passport holders who fit into this category need to understand that Brexit has changed everything and now whilst it was possible for members of European Union states to drive a foreign plated car for 180 days out of 365 in Spain, this will no longer be the case when the UK finally exits the EU. Then you have to register your vehicle or get rid of it. Many may assume that it’s worth taking a risk but the recent seiz-

ing of Gibraltar registered cars during lockdown by the Guardia Civil as Gibraltarian workers who have residences in Spain but have never registered the cars in Spain are a per fect example of what could happen. The percentage of value levied as tax is either zero, 4.75 per cent, 9.75 per cent or between 14.75 per cent and 16.9 per cent depending on the region of Spain where the car is to be registered and is based on the CO2 emissions. Additionally, you will need to pay road tax (IVTM) which is set
by each town hall, so the cost varies To register your vehicle, you will need an engineer’s inspection which produces a ficha reducida which is not a mechanical inspection, but verification of the vehicle’s characteristics. Where a vehicle has a manufacturers Certificate of Conformity, the ficha reducida is not required. it will then need an ITV (MOT) test undertaken. Following this, the two taxes are paid, and the car can be registered at Trafico. Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Borbon legacy started in 1700 with Felipe V, however, it has not been an easy path for the Royal house, they have been reinstated on four occasions Juan Carlos I being the last. The latest scandals concerning the former King Juan Carlos I were related to offshore funds that
were undeclared and kept in a Swiss bank alleged to be linked to a high-speed rail project in Saudi Arabia. These claims have jeopardised the House of Borbon once again, especially as it has now been revealed that he is untouchable due to Royal inmunnity and have triggered off demands for
a republic from the left. Juan Carlos I, was held in high regard for his role in the transition between the dictatorship and the democracy in Spain, with his high point in 1981 when he made a public television broadcast that became a major factor in the military backing down from a coup d’etat. However, later scandals relating to embezzlement involving his daughter, Cristina, and the infamous
hunting of elephants in Botswana led to a barrage of public criticism that is said to have made the former king abdicate in 2014. Moreover, earlier this year Felipe VI relinquished his inheritance, which has been seen by many in Spain as a form of recognising its immoral origin. The Monarchy in Spain has never gained the same affection from the public as the UK has, part-

ly owing to the fact that there has not been a longstanding monarchy rule but also a dictatorship and a time as a republic. The UK press also favours its Royal family whereas in Spain this is not the case. Alfonso XIII abdicated in 1931 when the republican parties won local elections, which were considered to be a plebiscite on the monarchy. Spain has had two republics which were short-
lived, nevertheless, many voices, especially from the left-wing, will take this opportunity to vindicate a new republic. Podemos leader and Spain’s vice president, Pablo Iglesias, has on many occasions stated his clear vision of the republic and leaders from regional communities such as the Basque Country and Catalonia are more than happy to back the proposal.

Morrisons Possible delay to new shopping pension tiff EVEN though profits for UK supermar ket group Morrisons have remained high during the lockdown, more than one third of shareholders voted against a proposal to reward senior directors with significant increases in pension contributions. It was considered that to receive 19 per cent more than the average 5 per cent was unfair and although the award did receive sufficient votes for it to be carried, the company has decided to re view the situation. It has however ex tended its 10 per cent discount for NHS workers until September.
THERE was jubilation in the Tor remolinos Council chamber when British developer Intu of fered to build a huge new com mercial and leisure park in the town at an estimated cost of €850 million. That was in May last year but finances were clearly a problem for the company as in December it sold its Puerto Venecia shop ping centre in Zaragoza and then another centre in Asturias. The company which relies up on footfall at its UK and Spanish shopping centres as well as rent
from stores has suffered further with closures during the Covid 19 pandemic and now it is re ported that it is having difficul ty in finding nearly €50 million to start works on the roads around the area chosen in order to ensure free movement of ve hicles. One of its partners in this project, the Portuguese Euro fund Group has now indicated that it may well be interested in taking over the entire project which will come as a consider able relief to the Torremolinos
Council which anticipated the creation of more than 4,000 jobs in the area and an influx of some 20 million visitors each year. Intu are not down and out as they still own the prestigious Xanadu centre in Madrid which will soon be back to the ‘new normal’ and has interest or owns some 17 centres in the UK. Time will tell which company will eventually build this new complex, but it currently looks as if it will still go ahead.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he divide his 90 days? You implied in a previous column that the 90day ‘clock’ for a tourist stay in Spain would only start ticking after the State of Alarm has ended. Does this apply to the 183day rule as well? My flight back to the UK has been cancelled four times now so I have stayed much longer than planned, and if I return in the autumn (flights booked long ago) I could now exceed 183 days for the year. Can I subtract the period of lockdown from my time in Spain when measuring against the 183 days? A S (Costa del Sol)
Think for ward, not backward. The YOU AND THE LAW State of Alarm is IN SPAIN now scheduled to end June 21. From that day you have the right to a tourist stay of 90 days during the following 183 days. These days need not be continuous. If you get a flight June 27, say, using up six of your days, you can return in the autumn with 84 days remaining to you. At the end of that time you must leave Spain and you may not return for at least the following 90 days.

Bank looks to the future AS profits start to falter at Spanish bank Santander, it has announced that it will be look ing to strengthen its technolo gy division by hiring staff di rectly. Currently a very high per centage of the work undertak en is outsourced and it is now looking to recruit 3,000 quali fied staff of which 1,000 will work for the bank in Spain. BUSINESS EXTRA Award quashed THE World Bank has stepped in and overturned a compensation claim for €128 million which was awarded against the Spanish government in 2017 following the introduction of a green policy with regards to energy production.

Spain’s debt increases SINCE 2017, Spain’s general government debt (which includes the autonomous re gions) had been steadily decreasing on a quarter by quarter basis. Figures just released by the Bank of Spain show a significant increase to €1.224 trillion (98.9 per cent of Gross Do mestic Product) for the first quarter of
2020. This was 3.5 per cent higher than the last quarter of 2019 and rose even before the lockdown and State of Alarm had in fluenced the results. Second quarter figures will almost cer tainly take the debt above 100 per cent of GDP.

Finance lessons from Dennis the Menace THE Bank of England is teaming up with TES (formerly the Times Educational Supplement) and Beano Studios to launch in July the Money and Me course for children aged from five to 11. The UK is not the USA
AS you can probably imagine, this week I truly had no idea where to start. Events taking place this past week or so have left me disgusted, saddened, angry and in utter despair. To me, one thing that has been made perfectly clear is that these BLM demonstrations and riots have managed to create more racial divisions in society than any other movement in living memory. People who previously never had a racist bone in their bodies have been virtually thrown into a mix which is dividing neighbours, breaking down friendships and even causing rifts in families. Racism is now rife. So well done all the marchers protesting against… Yep you’ve guessed it… Racism! To be frank, apart from the horrendous and utterly unacceptable way George Floyd was murdered, it seems pretty obvious to me that to present a vicious, armed robbing thug, who was a career criminal high on drugs, as an example of black culture, is hardly the brightest way to gain sympathy or support for a cause, however well intentioned. And do you know something? Despite all the protesting and postulating, I’m still not entirely clear what they actually want? The UK is not the USA.
DEMONSTRATIONS: Have created more racial divisions in society than ever before. In Britain it appears to me that if you are ethnic or black you often seem to have even more opportunities than the white population. Many are chosen for positions specifically because they have these backgrounds! Police recruitment schemes, the BBC and a whole spate of recent TV commercials immediately spring to mind.
You certainly don’t see advertisements asking people to apply for positions purely because they are white, the outcry would be humungous! As far as stop and search is concerned, the problem there is that the percentage of criminality, particularly among young black men, is so high it stands to reason they are going to be tar-
geted. I can’t think of a more waste of police time than patting down old white ladies for weapons or drugs. As for the opposition to a number of statues, these memorials are not exhibited to glorify slavery; they are erected to commemorate the achievements and efforts of historical figures. Ironically many of these ‘plinth occupiers’ are actually responsible for the democratic and liberal society that enables these protests to be allowed in the first place. No this is another blatant attempt to erode and air brush the British heritage and culture out of existence. What they hope to replace it with I can’t imagine! Whatever it turns out to be, you can rest assured it will include no encouragement of free speech, or enjoy the unbiased democratic way of life our ancestors fought and died for. I actually think there is a New World Order approaching, (‘like a thief in the night’!) the instigators of which must be rubbing their hands at the chaos being caused by all this unrest. Get the Onesies out, Orwellian doctrine is on the horizon, and the luvvies, lefties and ‘wokers’ have only themselves to blame. Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

The Power of Hope ROBERT SHALLIS ALBERT EINSTEIN once said: ‘Learn from yesterday, live for today, HOPE for tomorrow.’ With the world experiencing so much pain, uncertainty and confusion at present, the word ‘Hope’ once again has been called to duty. But is hope just a word we use half-heartedly when we are trying to hold on to something less negative out of desperation, or can it really make a difference? It’s actually a very powerful thing as it can inspire us, uplift us and help us get through those difficult and challenging times. Sometimes, just holding on to a little hope when everything around us can seem hopeless is not an easy thing to do when so many people prefer to hold on to despair.
POWERFUL WORD: You’ll soon find it to be a much healthier, positive and practical alternative. Hope is magical, it is a positive use of our imagination, the vision of a better outcome and has the ability to turn dreams into reality. Today most of us are hoping for a better world and a brighter future. It’s important that we continue to do so as it can help make each day seem more bearable during such testing times. It gives us the strength to carry on and push forward. Living without hope isn’t really
living, but of course it’s our choice. Optimism or pessimism? We are free to decide. Hope and despair have allies, faith and fear. Faith and fear are interesting as they both require that you believe in something you cannot see. So, hope itself requires an element of faith which is believing in something without evidence. The substance of faith is hope. We can easily be driven by
our fears however, we can also be driven by our hopes and beliefs, which most would agree is a more effective and positive way to live each day. It can sometimes be difficult to change our perspective but if you’re tired of that all too familiar feeling of doom and gloom which can often overwhelm us especially in today’s current climate, try practising hope.
Try focusing on a different ending to the story. Life is an open book, instead of predicting the worst, use the miraculous and amazing strength and power of hope to help change the chapters. So, let’s hold on to that powerful word . Let it become part of you and a way of being. You’ll soon find it to be a much healthier, positive and practical alternative. Simply put, hope is what you would like to happen. What would you like to happen? Don’t lose sight of hope, it is surely a better way to live, it helps you get to where you want to be and creates that shining light at the end what can sometimes seem like a never-ending dark tunnel? DEAR Euro Weekly, Thank god we are going into Phase 3 but I do wonder why are some bars and restaurants holding off opening until July? I thought they would be desperate to open and get bums on seats and start to recover some money. I saw on your Facebook that you are doing something to help small businesses with advertising which is a good idea as it’s hard to really track who is opening and when and maybe some little places will go unlooked and go bust. It really should be a time for businesses to pull out all the stops. If it was me I would be plastering posters up everywhere to get people to come to my restaurant. I mean even before the virus, I was constantly seeing certain shops changing hands every six months. Let’s hope they can keep some to last for a long time. Geoff Sullivan Marbella

SOME readers may have just turned the page every time the McCann parents appeared back in the papers, claiming it was a story with no good outcome, a waste of police resources or sadly that they thought the parents had something to do with their daughter’s disappearance or even death. However, it just goes to show that perseverance can sometimes lead to the discovery of an unturned stone. Last week German authorities identified 43-year-old Christian Brueckner, a German sex offender, as the prime suspect in the little girl’s disappearance. Brueckner, currently in prison in Germany for a drug offence is also appealing a previous conviction for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was abducted Now German police are also looking into if he was involved in the case of a six-year-old German boy, René Hasee, who disappeared in the Algarve in 1996 and fiveyear-old, Inga Gehricke, who disappeared in 2015 near his property in Stendhal, Germany. The authorities are slowly uncovering a list of sexual assaults, child pornography and countless other crimes. How did it take so long to find this man with so many breadcrumbs left behind leading directly to him? He was known in Praia da Luz, he was known to shower children with attention and gifts, friends and ex-girlfriends are now saying they helped him disappear, or heard him hint that he had done something, one even took ownership of his car. Why has it finally taken so long to put this puzzle together? There definitely seems to be more people to blame for hiding this high profile story and luckily for the heartbroken McCann parents it should clear them of any doubt.

The medical system appears to have done their job and I have no complaints though I know some have complained about how strict lockdown is and was. The point is they took action to get the job done no matter if some of it was unpopular, they made the hard decisions. In contrast, the UK is a shambles. I am a Conservative supporter but the government has been totally inept and cowardly in their decisions, it is not a popularity contest, making the tough decisions and leadership seems beyond them. The UK is now in the position of more deaths in a week than all 27 EU countries combined. The blame lies at the feet of an impotent, incompetent government. Those who may think I am being ‘disloyal’ to my home country need a reality check. It would be stupid to praise Boris and co for this mess just because they are British. If the cap fits etc. I just hope this dithering and lack of decision making doesn't cost more lives. Clarity, brevity and make the tough decisions, that’s what they are there for. VIEWPOINT By EWN columnist - John Sharples. A serious ramble I’m not sure why the right wing Imperialists are getting hung up on statues and street names - If someone put a statue of Jimmy Saville up on our street to commemorate his good works for children’s charity I wouldn’t complain if someone came along now and took it down. They’re red herrings though, who has learnt history from statues or street names, very few I suspect, yet more people will have learnt the terrible history of Colston and the slave trade from the taking down of his statue than ever learned anything about it at school - I looked at the history syllabus for this year and it’s no different than I was taught in the 60’s - basically glorification of the British Empire and all the good work Britain did which is fine, but no mention of all of the really terrible things Britain did during Colonisation / so personally I don’t condone vandalism and I confess it’s getting a bit silly on both sides with right wing extremists due to protest and look for trouble around monuments this weekend, but I care less about statues and street names other than I hope what is being done short term, whether people believe it’s right or wrong might lead to some change in education and the longer term knowledge of future generations - we shouldn’t continue to whitewash history in our education, literature and learning.

Think of the poor birds
BARRY DUKE I MUST confess I’d never heard of Edward Colston until I saw footage of his statue going headfirst into the River Avon in Bristol on June 7. My immediate reaction was ‘good riddance’ but after a moment’s reflection I thought: ‘No! Black Lives Matter have just destroyed a great pooping place for seagulls.’ In fact, after Colston was toppled, I found a picture on the Internet of a gull perched forlornly on the newly-vacated plinth. A further search revealed hundreds of images of birds roosting on the heads of the Great, the Good and, in the case of Colston, the Downright Despicable. Where would the birds go if these were to be removed? To other perches, naturally, but I find the sight of gulls standing imperiously on

the absurd just as Monty Python sketches do. Image-mining also threw up
a photo of a statue of the late great dictator Margaret Thatcher. It has one arm raised and is pointing a finger. The caption reads ‘the river’s over there. I want to go for a swim.’ A few days later, the same picture was used in a petition calling for the statue to be destroyed: ‘Let’s melt it down and make a nice bronze toilet to stick it in a public restroom. I’m sure we can all agree she’ll give more to humanity as a public potty than she actually did in Parliament.’ I signed it immediately for two reasons: No birds would be robbed of a roost as the statue is indoors at the House of Common, and because I have a visceral hatred of a woman who, with her utterly corrupt lackeys, all but destroyed the social fabric of the UK. As I write this, pressure is mounting to have the statue of imperialist and white su-
premacist Cecil Rhodes removed from Oriel College in Oxford. While Rhodes was responsible for the expansion of the British Empire in southern Africa and wanted to rule the world, Colston was a 17th century slave trader and a member of the Royal African Company which transported about 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the Americas. There’s a way, I believe, to defuse the anger raging around statues of loathsome individuals. What I would do is find some budding surrealists to change their faces into something resembling grotesque Picasso paintings, and attach to their plinths prominent plaques explaining just why these characters deserve nothing but contempt. It would be a marvellous way to teach history and combat racism.

MELTDOWN: Do one thing at a time. was asleep, I sat at the table on my terrace in tears. I was at my wits end trying to figure out what to do, I held my hands together and I prayed. Universe, please give me some guidance. I’m trying so hard to be the best at all aspects of my life but I feel like I’m failing. How can I give every-

Yeah but one more day won’t hurt. Yes it will! I stood up, grabbed the bags and off I went. That’s when i found them; three little baby birds. Universe, I asked for guidance, I asked for help and you send me three birds to take care of. Did you NOT understand that I was telling you I’M GOING TO DROP THE BALLS I’M JUGGLING!! How can I work with my 1:1 clients, run my members group, help my son with his studies, clean the house, complete my paperwork, complete the actions for my free course
AND FEED THREE BIRDS EVERY 20 MINUTES!! Why? Why would you do this to me? What are you trying to teach me? This isn’t a lesson... Or is it? It wasn’t until this morning that it dawned on me. The birds WERE sent for a reason. They WERE a lesson I needed to learn. I add more pressure than I need to. I help so many others but forget about myself. I don’t need to do it ALL in a day. BABY STEPS WILL LEAD TO BIG STEPS. Do one thing at a time. Do each task with love and NEVER be hard on yourself So, if you ever find yourself doing any of the above, stop! THE Madeleine McCann suspect reportedly linked to the disappearance of other young children has reignited interest in the w h o l e s a d s t o r y. T h e same suspect who was ‘discarded’ in 2007 in the original Portuguese investigation. However, that investigation failed to consider mobile phone data among a litany of errors. Kate and Gerry McCann have waited 13 years while Madeleine’s disappearance has spawned conspiracy theories, and panic among other parents. And though a new suspect has undeniably reignited interest in their daughter’s case, the British media were hooked from the moment she went missing. Let’s hope this is the end of their ordeal. Everyone has an opinion about the McCanns. Leav-

ing their children alone was undoubtedly an error of judgement, but they’ve paid the highest price for it. But then, should parents leave their kids in a car when they nip to the shops, or in a pram outside them? But it’s not just about what they did, it’s what the abductor did. And it’s not unusual that a
prime suspect turns up early in a police investigation and is virtually ignored or ‘discarded.’ This has happened in several cases: the Yorkshire Ripper, Milly Dowler (in Surrey), Rachel Nickell (in Wimbledon) and others. One distinguishing factor in these particular cases is that the eventual offender’s related crimes have in-
cluded crossing borders into different police regions and, occasionally, different countries. Naturally, there are other criteria that have to be considered such as the expertise of the investigators, their impartiality, their proficiency or motivation (or even lack of financial resources) that permit them to, or prevent them
from, pursuing every line of enquiry to an effective and appropriate conclusion. Factored into this, pressures from senior officers (as in the Jeremy Bamber case), politicians, public opinion and financial cuts can all have implications for the success or failure of an investigation. Hopefully, after all these years of anguish for the McCann family, Madeleine’s abductor is finally identified. It may bring closure of sorts, but the healing of wounds ... never. The brief ceremonial event traditionally held before formal birthday celebrations start, took place at 11am on June 13 at Windsor Castle. Although Trooping the Colour usually takes place at Buckingham Palace, the scaled-back version had to be moved to Windsor Castle, where the Queen is in isolation with Prince Philip. The small ceremonial event was designed in just two weeks to allow for social distancing among soldiers. The traditional Trooping the Colour event had already been cancelled
due to Covid-19 restrictions. Trooping the Colour ordinarily sees thousands flock to Buckingham Palace, lining the Mall to see the pageantry of the ceremony. However, this year the event meant that guardsmen had to maintain social distancing while standing in ceremonial formation. Although a much quieter birthday than the Queen is used to, there was still sufficient ‘pomp and circumstance’ to make it a memorable day. The Royal Family are spending the rest of the day in quiet celebration of Her Majesty’s 94th birthday, with many members joining the party ‘remotely.’
