All they ask is that Spain’s residents follow their instructions for our own good and to respect the lives of the more than 27,000 people that were lost and celebrate the over 150,000 lives that were saved. At the beginning of April Spain ranked the highest in the world for coronavirus fatalities, but due to the quick and carefully planned actions of the country’s very own hero Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, we have managed to drop to sixth place with only 25 fatalities in the last seven days, at the time of going to press. Sanchez enabled us to put our trust in him as he guided us through the crisis to provide the best care for his countrymen and adopted residents. For this, we owe him a great debt and plan to show him by keeping his country alive. Therefore, Euro Weekly News is very excited to say welcome back to Spain’s many visitors. It’s been such a long time since we have seen you and we are happy with the news that the country will accept tourists from June 21. You will be happy to know that the sun is blazing
right now and we have been enjoying the occasional heatwave so what better time to hit the country’s 5,000 miles of coastline and thousands of beaches? It will definitely be a great escape from the rioting and looting being observed in many other countries’ cities just now and a chance to relax after the stress and confusion caused by the Covid crisis. The many fantastic restaurants have been able to open to a larger capacity and are launching special offers to entice you with beautiful fresh seafood, local delicacies and Spain’s famous long list of tapas, full of choices. Of course, you will need something to wash it down with so come and take your pick of refreshing sangria or ice-cold beers in the local bars. The entertainment here is second to none with fla-

Second in Europe NERJA BEACH was voted as the second favourite beach of thousands of travellers, and four other Spanish beaches were in the top 20 - Cala Sa Boadella in Lloret de Mar, Bolonia Beach in Tarifa, Pregonda Beach in Menorca and Platja d’Aro on the Costa Brava. Pasjaca Beach in Croatia was number one. European Best Destinations, based in Brussel, was set up to promote tourism and culture across the EU in conjunction with the EDEN network and more than 300 tourist offices across the European region. They compile the votes of travellers to establish the best destinations to visit. The other Spanish beaches that were recognised were: Calella de Palafrugell, Costa Brava; Cala Agulla Beach, Mallorca; Mitjaneta Beach, Menorca; Ballota Beach, Asturias; Playa de las Teresitas, Tenerife; Tossa de Mar, Costa Brava; The Concha, San Sebastián; Callo del Moro, Mallorca; Ribadesella Beach, Asturias and Cala Macarelleta in Menorca.

A MINOR and a woman were arrested on Tuesday June 16 in Rincon de la Victoria for their alleged involvement in a fire next to an urbanisation in La Cala del Moral. According to sources, several residents saw both people in the area seconds before the fire broke out in an area of scrub and olive trees located in front of a block of flats. At 7.05pm, several people called 112 to report that there was a fire near Calle Sierra de Ronda and that flames were seen within 200 metres of some homes. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished around 11pm. BIN FIRES: A total of six containers were set alight. ACCORDING to eyewitness reports, up to a total of six containers were set alight on Wednesday June 16 morning in Velez-Malaga town centre. Specifically, those located in Plaza de Las Indias and Calle Reñidero. The proximity between both areas suggests that it was the work of an arsonist, something that is not new in the area, since precisely
one year ago, in July 2019, there were several consecutive nights where containers were burned. At that time, the Local Police managed to apprehend a suspect. The fires occurred on Wednesday morning at around 4am, precisely minutes after another fire was registered in an area next to the Los Zamoranos industrial estate.

No mercy FATIMA OFKIR REYES, from Barcelona, is the youngest Spanish prisoner abroad and has just been sentenced to 25 years in prison in Oman. Reyes was arrested at the young age of 18; however, she has now spent her 21st birthday behind bars. Reyes has been refused extradition. Her outside contact is only with her mother, who she speaks to every 15 days. She has confessed to her mother that she often thinks about death and pleads for her to get her out. The young girl was arrested after being caught with seven kilos of morphine in the hotel of an Omani sultanate. Her family have appealed to the King of Spain to use his good relationship with the

Boosting car sales THE government has announced that it plans to scrap old vehicles of more than 10 years old, in a bid to boost car sales and a depressed automotive sector. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also announced subsidies of between €400 and €4,000 towards the purchase of a new car, depending on pollution emissions. In short, the more environmentally friendly it is, the greater the subsidy. According to Sánchez, “the most urgent action is to revive car sales that will reactivate the factories.” Individual or self-employed people buying a vehicle can expect to receive a subsidy of between €400 and €800, depending on how efficient the model is. Despite opposition, those buying a petrol or diesel car will still be subsidised, but not
as much as someone buying an electric/hybrid car. Those buying an ECO car (hybrid or petrol car), will benefit from financial aid of between €600 or €1,000, respectively, towards a new car purchase. However, those buying cars with zero emissions can expect a subsidy of up to €4,000. However, manufacturers and dealers must match the amount provided by the government. Subsidies, however, will exclude the purchase of any vehicle that exceeds 120 grams of CO2 emissions, so most SUVs could be left out. Subsidies also only apply to vehicles costing up to €35,000, or €45,000 for people with reduced mobility or cars without emissions.
Slumping Fashion giant ZARA has been forced to close 1,200 shops worldwide as the Spanish fashion powerhouse finds itself in trouble after losing around 44 per cent (€3.3 billion) of physical sales just from February 1 to April 30. Amancio Ortega is one of the richest fashion tycoons in the world, if not the richest Spanish man in the world. His Inditex brand encompasses an array of fashion brands including Zara, Bershka, Pull and Bear, Stradivarius, Oysho and
more. The fashion industry has also been hard hit by the global pandemic, as their physical stores have been forced to shut and online sales have been slumping. It is understood that a majority of the 1,200 Inditex shops which will close are located in Asia and Europe. However, Inditex has announced that a majority of its employees who have been let off will be offered alternative roles which are more focused on online sales.

School Guidelines SPAIN’S Ministry of Education released on June 11 new guidelines for schools which are set to reopen in September. After months of remote learning and living in some of the harshest lockdown conditions in Europe, a return to school will be welcome to both children and parents alike. Spain’s cautious approach to de-escalating its State of Alarm is to be carried on in the ‘new normal.’ Although children will return to school, it may not be quite the same as they remember before the pandemic hit the country. Classrooms for students in the first four years of primary school will accommodate no more than 20 students. Students will be organised in groups which will be self-contained. Children will be encouraged to wear masks and they are to keep to a distance of 1.5m of others.

Alhambra reopens

YESTERDAY, Wednesday June 17 was the first day in which Granada’s famous tourist attraction, La Alhambra, reopened its doors to accommodate for tourists, but under strict regulations which cater to the coronavirus crisis. Around 70 per cent of its staff is back at work to help guide and service the 4,250 daily visitors, only half of what it is used to accommodating. Capacity for the facility is controlled at the ticket office and with online sales. There is vertical and horizontal signage around the facili-
ty to help ‘sensitise visitors’ about the flow of movement and encourage social distancing. Visitors are able to download the map of the monument via a QR code, which comes with an informative poster about the new rules and recommendations during the visit. The Alhambra has also started a new access system built on transparency and security, in which visitors can enter the monument by showing their personal identification, be it a passport or national ID card

‘Let’s end Bullfighting’ LEWIS HAMILTON’S damning criticism of bullfighting was a red rag to one of the pin-ups of Spain’s bullrings. Cayetano Rivera has hit back at the six-time Formula One champion for his online comments on the Spanish tradition. “Spain, this is truly disgusting," Hamilton posted on Instagram alongside an image put out by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) association of a bull killed in the ring with the message ‘Don’t’ let torture masquerade as culture.’ "Children in Spain learn to torture and kill bulls at the age of 14,” he told his 17 million Instagram followers. “We ask the Ministry of Education to close bullfighting schools immediately, you can help by sharing this request." White King THE very first White Lion to have been born in a Spanish zoo is being looked after by staff as he was rejected by his mother. The lion, which has been named White King by Sevilla zoo keepers, was born on May 31 but was abandoned by its mother after a traumatic birth. White King was born at the Guillena World Park Reserve. Three days later staff were forced to pull him out of the enclosure after being repeatedly snubbed by his mother and suffering with dehydration, hypothermia and hypoglycaemia. Zoo director Juan Luis Malpartida said the lioness, who was brought over from Thailand four years ago, was in labour for two weeks before White King was finally born. Mr Malpartida said the bundle of white fur was being bottle fed and doing well, and getting no end of cuddles from staff.

The pharma firm signed a deal which will see up to 400 million doses of the vaccine being made available to EU member countries. The vaccine, which is being developed by the University of Oxford, will be manufactured by AstraZeneca, who are already looking at ways of scaling-

LOCAL POLICE officers in Sevilla have arrested a reckless driver who was endangering lives as she attempted to drive whilst being under the influence. The combination of alcohol and conflict caused the event to turn violent as she tried to attack her mother and the policemen. This careless 30-year-old woman was reported to the police by her own mother who called to say she was about to drive under the influence. The daughter who was clearly drunk and had admitted to consuming cannabis as well had already begun driving her car when the police arrived to stop her. The officer informed the woman that she must carry out a breathalyser test, which she quickly refused.

‘Andalucia respira’ A MALAGA made ventilator has received a €25,000 donation from Endesa, to help the firm export ventilators to other nations struck by the virus. Together with Enel Group, the electricity and gas company is also offering international management expertise to help export the product. The ventilator was created thanks to the collaboration between professionals and researchers from the Ministry of Health and Families, the Malaga’s Institute of Biomedical Research, UMA and the Progress and Health Foundation. It is now being successfully manufactured by Fujitsu in Malaga. The first 300 units have already been despatched to the Andalucian Health Service, while the rest are being sold across Spain. In addition, there are several countries, particularly in Latin America, such as Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico and Ecuador that have expressed interest in buying the ventilators Endesa wants to help ‘Andalucía Respira’ reach these countries affected by the coronavirus, which is why it has made the donation and offering its expertise to the firm. It also wants to help ‘generate wealth and employment in the province of Malaga.’

In honour of Toxic Beauty cream those who died IN his last formal speech during the State of Alarm, Spanish Prime Minister and President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez announced that Spain will a State Ceremony on July 16 to pay tribute to all those who have died of Covid-19. The event will also recognise all of those who remained on the front line during the pandemic, many of whom, especially health workers, risked their own lives to help others. Attending the ceremony will be King Felipe VI, members of the Spanish Parliament, President of the European Council, Charles Michel, President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, David Sassoli representing the European Parliament, Spanish EU representative Josep Borrell and Director General of the World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. During this parliamentary session, Sánchez expressed his belief that thanks to his government’s actions during the pandemic some 450,000 lives had been saved as well as numerous jobs and the economy, so, he appealed to the opposition parties for unity.

DANGEROUS CREAMS: Woman reported a burning sensation after buying this toxic make-up remover. THE Municipal Police in Madrid has shut down a cosmetic store for selling dangerous beauty creams which caused bur ns when applied. The operation to take down this business, which was operating without a licence and creating hundreds of ‘beauty products’ with unknown substances, began on June 5 after police received a citizen complaint. The victim reported that she had bought a make-up remover cream at a shop in the Usera neighbourhood, on Calle Nicolas Sanchez in Madrid. When she applied the cream,
she noticed a strong stinging sensation which she then realised were burns on her eyelids. The officers went to the establishment to search for the cream and found a long list of infractions were being committed by the Chineseowned business. There were dozens of suspicious containers with unknown solvent contents and false brands. When police asked for justification of where the products were bought, the owners could not provide it. Given the number of infractions, police were forced to shut the shop down whilst analysing the creams to verify if they were toxic or not.

Not Mandatory’ THE Ministry of Interior has clarified that it is not ‘mandator y’ or ‘necessar y’ for police officers in Spain to record the event in which they use their tasers. Body-worn cameras are an effective way of monitoring police behaviour and ensuring they do not take advantage of their position of power. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior has explained that there is no need for officers to record the event given that “there are other systems which can determine the traceability of these devices without having to affect fundamental rights, data protection of the privacy of individuals.”These dangerous guns send 22 electrical pulses through your body; typically causing you to fall on the floor, if you are hit again then this electrical current is doubled. However, Nidec, the company which creates the taser pistols claims that these eapons possess the necessary technology to activate body police cameras automatically when in use. This is a very contentious debate amongst the human rights advocates and police authorities in Spain. For now, authorities have made it clear this is not a necessary practice, but organisations like AmnestyInternational believe in the need for strict and clear protocols when using these weapons.

Happy to Drive in Spain with Foreign Number Plates? FOR many years a significant number of expatriates living in Spain have chosen not to take out residency and have driven cars with foreign number plates, relatively content that they were unlikely to have problems with the authorities. British passport holders who fit into this category need to understand that Brexit has changed everything and now whilst it was possible for members of European Union states to drive a foreign plated car for 180 days out of 365 in Spain, this will no longer be the case when the UK finally exits the EU. Where a vehicle has a manufacturers Certificate of Conformity, the ficha reducida is not required. it will then need an ITV (MOT) test undertaken. Following this, the two taxes are paid, and the car can be registered at Trafico. Illegal demand COVID TEST: Top Madrid restaurant allegedly makes ‘illegal’ demand. A RESTAURANT in Madrid has allegedly demanded that diners must ‘test negative’ for Covid-19 before they are allowed to make a table reservation at its establishment. On Friday June 12 Madrid’s Ginkgo Restaurant & Sky Bar allegedly told a customer it was obligatory to have a Covid-19 test at least 72 hours prior to making a reservation to dine at the restaurant, and test negative for the disease
Furthermore, the establishment is said to have offered the customer the opportunity to have the Covid-19 test at the restaurant at a cost of €55. However, just 24 hours later, the restaurant made an announcement stating that tests are now “voluntary” when making a reservation. Spain’s consumer rights organisation FACUA has pointed out
that this practice is “illegal.” Commenting on the incident, FACUA spokesman Rubén Sánchez stated: “They had to backtrack because - amongst other things - this is illegal. “Establishments have to comply with health and safety rules, such as ensuring safe distances between different groups of diners and, of course, ensuring that waiters attend the public with a mask.”

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Borbon legacy started in 1700 with Felipe V, however, it has not been an easy path for the Royal house, they have been reinstated on four occasions Juan Carlos I being the last. The latest scandals concerning the former King Juan Carlos I were related to offshore funds that
were undeclared and kept in a Swiss bank alleged to be linked to a high-speed rail project in Saudi Arabia. These claims have jeopardised the House of Borbon once again, especially as it has now been revealed that he is untouchable due to Royal inmunnity and have triggered off demands for
a republic from the left. Juan Carlos I, was held in high regard for his role in the transition between the dictatorship and the democracy in Spain, with his high point in 1981 when he made a public television broadcast that became a major factor in the military backing down from a coup d’etat. However, later scandals relating to embezzlement involving his daughter, Cristina, and the infamous
hunting of elephants in Botswana led to a barrage of public criticism that is said to have made the former king abdicate in 2014. Moreover, earlier this year Felipe VI relinquished his inheritance, which has been seen by many in Spain as a form of recognising its immoral origin. The Monarchy in Spain has never gained the same affection from the public as the UK has, part-

ly owing to the fact that there has not been a longstanding monarchy rule but also a dictatorship and a time as a republic. The UK press also favours its Royal family whereas in Spain this is not the case. Alfonso XIII abdicated in 1931 when the republican parties won local elections, which were considered to be a plebiscite on the monarchy. Spain has had two republics which were short-
lived, nevertheless, many voices, especially from the left-wing, will take this opportunity to vindicate a new republic. Podemos leader and Spain’s vice president, Pablo Iglesias, has on many occasions stated his clear vision of the republic and leaders from regional communities such as the Basque Country and Catalonia are more than happy to back the proposal.

Morrisons Possible delay to new shopping pension tiff EVEN though profits for UK supermar‐ ket group Morrisons have remained high during the lockdown, more than one third of shareholders voted against a proposal to reward senior directors with significant increases in pension contributions. It was considered that to receive 19 per cent more than the average 5 per cent was unfair and although the award did receive sufficient votes for it to be carried, the company has decided to re‐ view the situation. It has however ex‐ tended its 10 per cent discount for NHS workers until September.
THERE was jubilation in the Tor‐ remolinos Council chamber when British developer Intu of‐ fered to build a huge new com‐ mercial and leisure park in the town at an estimated cost of €850 million. That was in May last year but finances were clearly a problem for the company as in December it sold its Puerto Venecia shop‐ ping centre in Zaragoza and then another centre in Asturias. The company which relies up‐ on footfall at its UK and Spanish shopping centres as well as rent
from stores has suffered further with closures during the Covid‐ 19 pandemic and now it is re‐ ported that it is having difficul‐ ty in finding nearly €50 million to start works on the roads around the area chosen in order to ensure free movement of ve‐ hicles. One of its partners in this project, the Portuguese Euro‐ fund Group has now indicated that it may well be interested in taking over the entire project which will come as a consider‐ able relief to the Torremolinos
Council which anticipated the creation of more than 4,000 jobs in the area and an influx of some 20 million visitors each year. Intu are not down and out as they still own the prestigious Xanadu centre in Madrid which will soon be back to the ‘new normal’ and has interest or owns some 17 centres in the UK. Time will tell which company will eventually build this new complex, but it currently looks as if it will still go ahead.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Can he divide his 90 days? You implied in a previous column that the 90‐day ‘clock’ for a tourist stay in Spain would only start ticking after the State of Alarm has ended. Does this apply to the 183‐day rule as well? My flight back to the UK has been cancelled four times now so I have stayed much longer than planned, and if I return in the autumn (flights booked long ago) I could now exceed 183 days for the year. Can I subtract the period of lockdown from my time in Spain when measuring against the 183 days? A S (Costa del Sol)
Think for‐ ward, not backward. The YOU AND THE LAW State of Alarm is IN SPAIN now scheduled to end June 21. From that day you have the right to a tourist stay of 90 days during the following 183 days. These days need not be continuous. If you get a flight June 27, say, using up six of your days, you can return in the autumn with 84 days remaining to you. At the end of that time you must leave Spain and you may not return for at least the following 90 days.

Bank looks to the future AS profits start to falter at Spanish bank Santander, it has announced that it will be look‐ ing to strengthen its technolo‐ gy division by hiring staff di‐ rectly. Currently a very high per‐ centage of the work undertak‐ en is outsourced and it is now looking to recruit 3,000 quali‐ fied staff of which 1,000 will work for the bank in Spain. A further 1,000 will be ap‐ pointed in Brazil with the bal‐ ance being shared throughout the Group’s overseas opera‐ tions as Santander looks to up‐ date its online business.
BUSINESS EXTRA Award quashed THE World Bank has stepped in and overturned a compensation claim for €128 million which was awarded against the Spanish government in 2017 following the introduction of a green policy with regards to energy production.

Spain’s debt increases SINCE 2017, Spain’s general government debt (which includes the autonomous re‐ gions) had been steadily decreasing on a quarter by quarter basis. Figures just released by the Bank of Spain show a significant increase to €1.224 trillion (98.9 per cent of Gross Do‐ mestic Product) for the first quarter of
2020. This was 3.5 per cent higher than the last quarter of 2019 and rose even before the lockdown and State of Alarm had in‐ fluenced the results. Second quarter figures will almost cer‐ tainly take the debt above 100 per cent of GDP.

DEMONSTRATIONS: Have created more racial divisions in society than ever before.
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT AS you can probably imagine, this week I truly had no idea where to start. Events taking place this past week or so have left me disgusted, saddened, angry and in utter despair. To me, one thing that has been made perfectly clear is that these BLM demonstrations and riots have managed to create more racial divisions in society than any other movement in living memory. People who previously never had a racist bone in their bodies have been virtually thrown into a mix which is dividing neighbours, breaking down friendships and even causing rifts in families. Racism is now rife. So well done all the marchers protesting against… Yep you’ve guessed it… Racism! To be frank, apart from the horrendous and utterly unacceptable way George Floyd was murdered, it seems pretty obvious to me that to present a vicious, armed robbing thug, who was a career criminal high on drugs, as
an example of black culture, is hardly the brightest way to gain sympathy or support for a cause, however well intentioned. And do you know something? Despite all the protesting and postulating, I’m still not entirely clear what they actually want? The UK is not the USA. In Britain it appears to me that if you are ethnic or black you often seem to have even more opportunities than the white population. Many are chosen for positions specifically because they have these backgrounds! Police recruitment schemes, the BBC and a whole spate of recent TV commercials immediately spring to mind. You certainly don’t see advertisements asking people to apply for positions purely because they are white, the outcry would be humungous! As far as stop and search is concerned, the problem there is that the percentage of criminality, particularly among young black men, is so high it stands to reason they are going to be targeted. I can’t think of a more waste of police time than patting down old white ladies for weapons or drugs.
As for the opposition to a number of statues, these memorials are not exhibited to glorify slavery; they are erected to commemorate the achievements and efforts of historical figures. Ironically many of these ‘plinth occupiers’ are actually responsible for the democratic and liberal society that enables these protests to be allowed in the first place. No this is another blatant attempt to erode and air brush the British heritage and culture out of existence. What they hope to replace it with I can’t imagine! Whatever it turns out to be, you can rest assured it will include no encouragement of free speech, or enjoy the unbiased democratic way of life our ancestors fought and died for. I actually think there is a New World Order approaching, (‘like a thief in the night’!) the instigators of which must be rubbing their hands at the chaos being caused by all this unrest. Get the Onesies out, Orwellian doctrine is on the horizon, and the luvvies, lefties and ‘wokers’ have only themselves to blame. Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

THE Madeleine McCann suspect reportedly linked to the disappearance of other young children h a s r e i g n i t e d i n t e rest in the whole sad story. The same suspect who was ‘discarded’ in 2007 in t h e o r i g i n a l P o rtuguese investigat i o n . H o w e v e r, t h a t investigation failed to consider mobile phone data among a litany of errors. Kate and Gerry McCann have waited 13 years while Madeleine’s disappearance has spawned conspiracy theories, and panic among other parents. And though a new suspect has undeniably reignited interest in their daughter’s case, the British media were hooked from the moment she went missing. Let’s hope this is the end of their ordeal. Everyone has an opinion about the McCanns. Leaving their
children alone was undoubtedly an error of judgement, but they’ve paid the highest price for it. But then, should parents leave their kids in a car when they nip to the shops, or in a pram outside them? But it’s not just about what they did, it’s what the abductor did. And it’s not unusual that a prime suspect tur ns up early in a police investigation and is virtually ignored or ‘discarded.’ This has happened in several c a s e s : t h e Yo r k s h i r e Ripper, Milly Dowler (in Surrey), Rachel Nickell (in Wimbledon) and others. One distinguishing factor in these particular cases is that the eventual offender’s related crimes have included crossing borders into different police regions and, occasionally, different countries. Naturally, there are other criteria that have to be considered such as the expertise of the investigators, their impartiality, their proficiency or motivation (or even lack of finan-
cial resources) that permit them to, or prevent them from, pursuing every line of enquiry to an effective and appropriate conclusion. Factored into this, pressures from senior officers (as in the Jeremy Bamber case), politicians, public opinion and financial cuts can all have implications for the success or failure of an investigation. Hopefully, after all these years of anguish for the McCann family, Madeleine’s abductor is finally identified. It may bring closure of sorts, but the healing of wounds ... never. AS the most simple pleasures of life slowly return, they suddenly feel more fantastic than before. I walked through Marbella on Monday, filled with mixed emotions. On one hand, it’s great to see people reuniting over coffee, or ice cream. Wide smiles and excited chat. Simple daily life, that we now treasure. On the other, to see the large number of businesses that have been forced to close, was shocking. While the world has entered recession, to see it on such a scale, in a town like Marbella, was an eye opener. A week ago, I stopped by a small restaurant, in the centre of town. The owner, a charming lady, explained how she was trying to get customers to return. Trying everything - cutting prices, setting up a home delivery service and such. I could see the panic in her eyes. She explained that people are simply not going out to eat, as people are nervous. I applauded her strength and determination. I assured her I would return soon with friends. Sadly, when I returned just days later, her business was gone. Life is very mixed right now. Again, a story of two sides. On one, we need tourism to restart, but at the same time, we the residents, are extremely lucky to have Marbella so tranquil, as it heads towards mid-June. Most days I hang out at the beach. It’s a dawn till dusk addiction, and one I am reluctant to give up. Long days spent swimming, lunching and snoozing on an almost empty beach. Los Monteros is my HQ, and I love it. My house is on the beach, so it’s as if, all I need, is all I have. Such a fantastic area, and certainly the best beach in Marbella. Social distancing is respected, and all in all, life’s, as the saying goes, a beach. On Wednesday I was craving pizza. Actually, if I’m honest, I crave pizza most days. At a small local restaurant,

As if the pizza was leading me back to Italy, I took a call from my friend Edo in Rome, inviting me to a party next month. But how could I get there? Would the airport be open? I knew that I had to get there, no matter what. Those who know me, know my heart belongs in Italy, especially Rome. A city where I’ve lived for many years. A city that fills me with so much happiness, it almost feels like a Fellini movie. After months of lockdown, just like that, it seems I’ll be at home, in Rome again, soon. My heart pumps at the thought. To reboot local economy, doesn’t have to be dinner at a Michelin restaurant. A simple espresso at a bar is a good place to start. An amazing, inexpensive pizza (or two) is also a good plan. I’m a firm believer in tipping. As we emerge from lockdown, into an uncertain world, these days I find myself over tipping, everywhere I go. Perhaps the universe will return the favour somehow. We live in hope!

DAVID WORBOYS EACH day, the statistics of reported cases and deaths from coronavirus are published by various sources. While each fatality is a meaningful personal tragedy, the figures themselves are meaningless. On June 9 we were asked to believe that, while Belgium had suffered 9,606 deaths from 59,348 cases, Russia had 5,971 from 476,658 cases. There is no doubt about the recent increase in global mortality, but how many of them are a result of the actual measures imposed to combat the coronavirus? These deaths are most likely included in the statistics as caused by viral infection. And to what extent have these measures really been necessary? They have been implemented to the inconvenience of the individual, and have adversely affected our way of life. Society cannot

Living in fear IN LOCKDOWN: It is essential that we proceed with caution. communicate and mix freely; almost every kind of business has been closed and public services suspended. Millions of individuals have been bottled up at home, starved of fresh air, exercise and regular nutrition. They have postponed urgently needed medical treatment, then had to wear masks, and may eventually be forced into vaccination with an unproven drug. It is unfortunately necessary
for health and care workers, dentists, hairdressers and prostitutes to wear masks all the time they are at work. But billions of unaffected people are wearing them in the streets even when driving alone or sitting in their own homes. Used excessively or unnecessarily, this is not merely unhygienic, it is potentially dangerous. In many countries this is possibly the cause of more deaths than corona-virus itself. The damage to the lungs through
lack of proper oxygen and to the immune syst e m through repeatedly inhaling exhaled breath must be incalculable. No wonder so many health workers, bus drivers, waiters, supermarket cashiers and elderly citizens are among the victims. Either they succumb to the virus or are recorded erroneously in its statistics. In Spain, there has been the additional fear of draconian fines and aggressiveness by the police, totally disproportionate to trivial and often wrongly interpreted breaches. Certainly, offenders need to be penalised and deterred from re-offending, and the
laws have been complicated and changing, but many officers have reacted to their confusion by abusing their powers. The huge fines have ruined the futures of numerous offenders. We have seen the plight of Venezuelans leaving the refuge of Colombia to return home to the chaos of their own country for fear of starvation resulting from unemployment. Thousands of Peruvians are leaving Lima to walk back to their families and farms across the mountains for fear of infection. There is evidence of extreme hardship, determination and faith. We have also seen heart-warming acts of charity by Colombian and Peruvian strangers to feed them and help them on their way. The real tragedy is that total lockdown may not have been necessary at all. But we don’t know! This is why it is essential that we proceed with caution.

He was stressed over exams that are set in a whole new way, I was trying to be mum of the year doing everything I can to support him, he was trying to juggle exam studying with every day class, I was trying to juggle a home life, work life balance. He cried... I cried. We both cried together. That night, when everyone

was asleep, I sat at the table on my terrace in tears. I was at my wits end trying to figure out what to do, I held my hands together and I prayed. Universe, please give me some guidance. I’m trying so hard to be the best at all as-
pects of my life but I feel like I’m failing. How can I give everything and everyone my all at the same time. Please, show me or tell me something, anything! I went to bed that night exhausted!
The next day, I promised I would stay calm and in control. I started my day full of positivity. First on the results list (I don’t do to do lists)... Dog poo clear up. The conversation in my head went like this: Dione, leave it until tomorrow, one day won’t hurt. Ahh but you didn’t do it yesterday. Yeah but one more day won’t hurt. Yes it will! I stood up, grabbed the bags and off I went. That’s when i found them; three little baby birds. Universe, I asked for guidance, I asked for help and you send me three birds to take care of. Did you NOT understand that I was telling you I’M GOING TO DROP THE BALLS I’M JUGGLING!! How can I work with my 1:1 clients, run my members group, help my son with his studies, clean
the house, complete my paperwork, complete the actions for my free course AND FEED THREE BIRDS EVERY 20 MINUTES!! Why? Why would you do this to me? What are you trying to teach me? This isn’t a lesson... Or is it? It wasn’t until this morning that it dawned on me. The birds WERE sent for a reason. They WERE a lesson I needed to learn. I add more pressure than I need to. I help so many others but forget about myself. I don’t need to do it ALL in a day. BABY STEPS WILL LEAD TO BIG STEPS. Do one thing at a time. Do each task with love and NEVER be hard on yourself So, if you ever find yourself doing any of the above, stop! Read this and remember how amazing you really are!

Let it all out ARE you feeling the stresses of life? Having problems winding down at the end of the day? Then try these simple mediation exercises. Body Scan Ease tension after a long day. Find a comfortable position and take time to find your calm, steady breath. Become aware of sensations in your body, and begin slow breaths focused on each area. Start with your left toes and left foot, left ankle, calf, knee, thigh
and up to your left hip. If you notice tension, breathe into it, relax on the exhale. Now the right side. Then up to the pelvis, abdomen and lower back, moving up through the torso and heart. From there your fingers, hands, wrists, up the arms, through the shoulders, neck, jaw, temples, ears, eyes, forehead, and skull. Mindful Breathing Practise twice daily to develop focus, attention, clarity and calm.
Sit comfortably with a straight spine and find a slow breath. Count when you exhale and inhale from one to 10 eg inhale one, exhale one; inhale two, exhale two. Upon reaching 10, begin again but count down to one. When you’ve completed this cycle five times, maintain breathing at this calm and consistent pace, for two minutes, imagining your breath flowing through the respiratory system and realising its connection with your body.
SO I have been eating healthy and exercising for eight weeks now, not only am I beginning to see the physical changes to my body but I am also beginning to feel the benefits it is having to my mental health. Whether you’ve just finished a long walk or an exercise routine in the gym, that feeling you get after a good workout is unbeatable. Your body feels energised and your mind feels more focused and less cluttered. For me it releases an instant dash of happiness, but it may do much more than that - it might help prevent or reduce symptoms of my bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder being a condition that causes unusual shifts in mood and energy levels. I either feel very ‘up,’energised at periods of time and v e r y ‘down,’ d e pressed, and hopeless at other times. These mood episodes can affect my energy levels, emotions, and sleep patterns - and it can be very challenging to live with. That adrenaline and feel good feeling after working out it’s a very real feeling, it’s a result of your body producing natural feel-good chemicals. Other easy ways to stay active include: • Changing up your everyday activities, such as taking the stairs instead of the lift or parking a little further away from the entrance to the
supermarket. • Taking your dog for a walk, instead of just letting them out in the garden. • Going for a power-walk along the beach or climbing up and down staircases if you can’t get to a gym. If you don’t enjoy going to the gym or taking exercise classes, try activities that involve being active, like dancing. Many kinds of treatments can ease symptoms - medications, therapy, and living a healthy lifestyle. Exercise alone won’t manage all of your symptoms, but it can make them easier to manage and reduce your risk of other health complications. If something hurts or makes your symptoms more severe, stop those activities and talk to your doctor or professional. Different types of exercise work for different people. Keep trying new ways to stay active, have fun, and find what works for you. I for example struggle with fast weight rep work outs as its pumps me up too much, the adrenaline is just too much for me!! But in these last weeks I have noticed a change in my moods throughout the day, less irritable, I actually have a sleeping pattern (it was non existent before!), my anxiety is less pronounced too. IT was March 1997. I was sat in my chalet at the holiday camp where I was Entertainment Manager in the north of England. It was dark and the rain was teeming down, the wind howling past my window. I had worked for Pontin’s since I was 15 years old. When I put my bluecoat jacket on for the f i r s t t i m e , m y c h i l d h o o d d re a m came true. I loved my job. Now, after 19 years, I was fed up. The prospect of another season filled me with dread. I had just retur ned from two weeks in Tenerife on holiday. After years of hard work I had finally had enough. The winters were cold and lonely. I decided, that night, that I had to get out of the UK once and for all. There had to be something better. I loved my holidays in Spain and decided that, in the morning, I would start to do something about it. I awoke to dark skies and piddling rain that doesn’t give in until you are sopping wet. I made my way through the closed camp to the offices. My friend Phil was chatting on the phone. He was talking to a mutual
friend. Our friend had just taken over as head of entertainment for Airtours holidays. I grabbed the phone and begged him to give me a job. “Get me out of here!” I said. He didn’t believe that I would leave Pontin’s as it ran through my blood, but nevertheless he came to see me that weekend and offered me a massive hotel in Mallorca. Four weeks later I was there and I never looked back. Not once have I thought of moving back to the UK. People often say how lucky we are to be living in Spain. I don’t put it down to luck. I put it down to getting on a plane and not going back. If that phone call hadn’t have happened, I would have been here anyway. It isn’t that complicated to do. If you dream of living here, do it!. Don’t look for reasons why you shouldn’t. Get those bags packed and move that backside and start living the life that you dream of living. If you don’t like it, you can always go back, but I bet you don’t! Just because you have made your bed, it doesn’t mean you have to lie in it forever.

False Friends...the Language of Betrayal SUZANNE MANNERS IN my 30s I moved to Gibraltar. It was my first time living and working abroad. I immediately fell in love with the place and even today one glimpse of the rock and my heart flutters like a pre-teen girl at a Hanson concert. I stayed for six years, had a child and met many weird and wonderful people. I visit often and have plans to move back in the near future. At the end of the six years I understood some Llanito and could speak Spanish reasonably well (better than now) thanks in part to my ‘in-laws’ who spoke to me in Spanish, at first to exclude and finally to include. However, my first ever Spanish sentence fell out of my mouth one drunken night
in what was once Rodolfo’s bar on Watergardens. My ‘friend’ (the quotation marks will become evident) had patiently and kindly (as I thought) taught me how to ask for a particular meal in Spanish. My pronunciation was perfect, I was confident as I approached Joe, the bar’s owner and proudly asked for chicken and chips… Laughter... unfettered... raucous laughter from Joe and from every customer in the bar. My so called friend had sent me like a Wildebeest into the Lion’s den to ask not for chicken but for something utterly NOT chicken (no need to explain to those of you fully aware of the importance of the end letter of a daunting plethora of words). I never again trusted anyone to tell me the correct saying, expression or word in another language. Give me a dictionary or Google Translate any day rather than become the hostage of a
FALSE FRIENDS: Are to be avoided like the plague. friend’s dodgy sense of humour. Even ar med with my phrase book and dictionary I stumble over those false friends... those words that sound like English but are not: Embarazado, constipado etc. I’m ashamed to say I gig-
gle childishly when a student informs me he is ‘constipated’ as he sniffles into a tissue. These are known as ‘false friends’ and are to be avoided like the plague for they will trip you up, humiliate you, upset you and cause misunderstanding and conflict.
‘Mind your speech a little lest you should mar your fortunes,’ quoth the mighty bard and this is no less true of learning to converse in another language. My friend’s betrayal of my trust was quickly forgotten but it has lead me to wonder at the language of betrayal the words we use to betray or to hurt a friend; double cross, stab in the back, to be two faced, to mislead to deceive... all quite violent and unpleasant words and phrases relying mostly on subter fuge and the unwitting trust of the friend about to be betrayed. A study at Cornell University aims to isolate the vocabulary used prior to betrayal as apparently like our ‘false friends’ we trip ourselves up with the words we choose. So beware the friend who utters the phrase ‘honest that is how you ask for chicken’ as he backs away stifling giggles. Toodle pip!

DEAR Euro Weekly, Thank god we are going into Phase 3 but I do wonder why are some bars and restaurants holding off opening until July? I thought they would be desperate to open and get bums on seats and start to recover some money. I saw on your Facebook that you are doing something to help small businesses with advertising which is a good idea as it’s hard to really track who is opening and when and maybe some little places will go unlooked and go bust. It really should be a time for businesses to pull out all the stops. If it was me I would be plastering posters up everywhere to get people to come to my restaurant. SOME readers may have just turned the page every time the McCann parents appeared back in the papers, claiming it was a story with no good outcome, a waste of police resources or sadly that they thought the parents had something to do with their daughter’s disappearance or even death. However, it just goes to show that perseverance can sometimes lead to the discovery of an unturned stone. Last week German authorities identified 43-year-old Christian Brueckner, a German sex offender, as the prime suspect in the little girl’s disappearance. Brueckner, currently in prison in Germany for a drug offence is also appealing a previous conviction for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was abducted Now German police are also looking into if he was involved in the case of a six-year-old German boy, René Hasee, who disappeared in the Algarve in 1996 and fiveyear-old, Inga Gehricke, who disappeared in 2015 near his property in Stendhal, Germany. The authorities are slowly uncovering a list of sexual assaults, child pornography and countless other crimes. How did it take so long to find this man with so many breadcrumbs left behind leading directly to him? He was known in Praia da Luz, he was known to shower children with attention and gifts, friends and ex-girlfriends are now saying they helped him disappear, or heard him hint that he had done something, one even took ownership of his car. Why has it finally taken so long to put this puzzle together? There definitely seems to be more people to blame for hiding this high profile story and luckily for the heartbroken McCann parents it should clear them of any doubt.

Statue of Scouts Founder Robert Baden-Powell to be Pulled down Today over his ‘Nazi Sympathies’ Supporting small businesses. and from what I have seen locally the public has been abiding by them. The medical system appears to have done their job and I have no complaints though I know some have complained about how strict lockdown is and was. The point is they took action to get the job done no matter if some of it was unpopular, they made the hard decisions. In contrast, the UK is a shambles. I am a Conservative supporter but the government has been totally inept and cowardly in their decisions, it is not a popularity contest, making the tough decisions and leadership seems beyond them. The UK is now in the position of more deaths in a week than all 27 EU countries combined. The blame lies at the feet of an impotent, incompetent government. Those who may think I am being ‘disloyal’ to my home country need a reality check. It would be stupid to praise Boris and co for this mess just because they are British. If the cap fits etc. I just hope this dithering and lack of decision making doesn't cost more lives. Clarity, brevity and make the tough decisions, that’s what they are there for. A serious ramble I’m not sure why the right wing Imperialists are getting hung up on statues and street names - If someone put a statue of Jimmy Saville up on our street to commemorate his good works for children’s charity I wouldn’t complain if someone came along now and took it down. They’re red herrings though, who has learnt history from statues or street names, very few I suspect, yet more people will have learnt the terrible history of Colston and the slave trade from the taking down of his statue than ever learned anything about it at school - I looked at the history syllabus for this year and it’s no different than I was taught in the 60’s - basically glorification of the British Empire and all the good work Britain did which is fine, but no mention of all of the really terrible things Britain did during Colonisation / so personally I don’t condone vandalism and I confess it’s getting a bit silly on both sides with right wing extremists due to protest and look for trouble around monuments this weekend, but I care less about statues and street names other than I hope what is being done short term, whether people believe it’s right or wrong might lead to some change in education and the longer term knowledge of future generations - we shouldn’t continue to whitewash history in our education, literature and learning.

I MUST confess I’d never heard of Edward Colston until I saw footage of his statue going headfirst into the River Avon in Bristol on June 7. My immediate reaction was ‘good riddance’ but after a moment’s reflection I thought: ‘No! Black Lives Matter have just destroyed a great pooping place for seagulls.’ In fact, after Colston was toppled, I found a picture on the Internet of a gull perched forlornly on the newly-vacated plinth. A further search revealed hundreds of images of birds roosting on the heads of the Great, the Good and, in the case of Colston, the Downright Despicable. Where would the birds go if these were to be removed? To other perches, naturally, but I find the sight of gulls standing imperiously on

SERVING A PURPOSE: A gull perched on Christian missionary and explorer David Livingstone in Edinburgh. the heads of statues and taking a dump hugely amusing. They appeal to my sense of
the absurd just as Monty Python sketches do. Image-mining also threw up
a photo of a statue of the late great dictator Margaret Thatcher. It has one arm raised and is pointing a finger. The caption reads ‘the river’s over there. I want to go for a swim.’ A few days later, the same picture was used in a petition calling for the statue to be destroyed: ‘Let’s melt it down and make a nice bronze toilet to stick it in a public restroom. I’m sure we can all agree she’ll give more to humanity as a public potty than she actually did in Parliament.’ I signed it immediately for two reasons: No birds would be robbed of a roost as the statue is indoors at the House of Common, and because I have a visceral hatred of a woman who, with her utterly corrupt lackeys, all but destroyed the social fabric of the UK. As I write this, pressure is mounting to have the statue of imperialist and white su-
premacist Cecil Rhodes removed from Oriel College in Oxford. While Rhodes was responsible for the expansion of the British Empire in southern Africa and wanted to rule the world, Colston was a 17th century slave trader and a member of the Royal African Company which transported about 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the Americas. There’s a way, I believe, to defuse the anger raging around statues of loathsome individuals. What I would do is find some budding surrealists to change their faces into something resembling grotesque Picasso paintings, and attach to their plinths prominent plaques explaining just why these characters deserve nothing but contempt. It would be a marvellous way to teach history and combat racism.

The brief ceremonial event traditionally held before formal birthday celebrations start, took place at 11am on June 13 at Windsor Castle. Although Trooping the Colour usually takes place at Buckingham Palace, the scaled-back version had to be moved to Windsor Castle, where the Queen is in isolation with Prince Philip. The small ceremonial event was designed in just two weeks to allow for social distancing among soldiers. The traditional Trooping the Colour event had already been cancelled
due to Covid-19 restrictions. Trooping the Colour ordinarily sees thousands flock to Buckingham Palace, lining the Mall to see the pageantry of the ceremony. However, this year the event meant that guardsmen had to maintain social distancing while standing in ceremonial formation. Although a much quieter birthday than the Queen is used to, there was still sufficient ‘pomp and circumstance’ to make it a memorable day. The Royal Family are spending the rest of the day in quiet celebration of Her Majesty’s 94th birthday, with many members joining the party ‘remotely.’
