MASKS A MUST SO, it looks like we should get used to wearing face masks, as just as they are obligatory to wear in Spain during the current State of Alarm measures, they look to play a major part in the forthcoming ‘new normality.’ The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday June 9 the decree of measures for the new normality. In principle, this period will last until there is a vaccine or an effective treatment against Covid19. Face masks will be mandatory and fines for failing to comply will be up to €100. The communities must be prepared for another outbreak. However, there will be no movement restriction or limit of people who can meet. Health Minister Salvador Illa has repeated that residents must “learn to live with the virus.” This new stage will begin when the State of Alarm ends on June 21. Expats raise thousands EXPATS in Mojacar’s La Parata have raised thousands for the local Red Cross for their work supporting needy families particularly hard hit by the coronavirus crisis. On June 5 the La Parata Mojacar fundraising team presented a cheque for €3,867 to Red Cross, Mojacar President Conchi and Vice-President Isobel, where they were joined by Mojacar Council head of Maintenance and Services Martin Montoya. The funds came from sponsorships and donations generated from the ‘Briggsy & Claysy Show.’ The 30minute live Facebook broadcast from La Parata every morning over eight weeks during lockdown included a news slot. The idea was the brainchild of Rob Briggs, ably supported by his partner Penny Clayton. Their dedication to lifting the spirits of people both near and far with song

RBL social meetings THE Mojacar Branch of the Royal British Legion reports it is starting low level social activities while observing Spain’s Covid-19 infection prevention regulations. Mojacar RBL said the social meetings “enable the branch to keep their members fully aware of the current restrictions, and enable the members to get together and share their experiences of life in the Mojacar area during these troubled times.” The branch is holding a coffee morning at the Continental Hotel in Mojacar Playa on Thursday June 18 at 11am, and says non-members are welcome to pop in for coffee. TUI and Ryanair return TUI and Ryanair international holiday flights will be returning to the Costa Almeria next month. Almeria airport has reported that the TUI Group will be restarting

its connections between the province and Birmingham, Bristol, London, Manchester and Brussels in July with the same frequencies as before flights were halted due to the coronavirus crisis. This means one service a week to each of the UK airports, and three flights a week between Almeria and the Belgian capital in July and August and two in September. Ryanair will meanwhile be flying between Almeria and five European destinations. The Irish low-cost airline will operate twice weekly services between the province and Brussels, Dublin, London and Manchester. There will also be one flight a week between Almeria and Milan. A third company to confirm it is coming back to Almeria is Luxair. The airline will relaunch its route connecting the province and Luxembourg.

Phase 3

Forward to freedom

FROM Monday, some 25 million people moved into Phase 3 of Spain’s de-escalation from the State of Alarm. The areas that advanced to Phase 3 are: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarre, Aragon, Extremadura, Andalucia, Murcia, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands. The autonomous communities have now been given the power to decide how long this period of de-escalation should last and when State of Alarm ends. In Phase 3, restaurant and bar terraces, which were currently limited to 50 per cent of their capacity, will be able to open up to 75 per cent of capacity. The common areas of the shopping centres may reopen, although with a capacity limit. Socially, in Phase 3 the capacity is increased in social celebrations such as weddings and funerals and there may be up to 150 guests in open spaces and 75 indoors. The wake may have up to 50 attendees outdoors and 25 indoors. And the churches, up to 75 per cent capacity. Nightclubs can now open with a third of their capacity, except in Andalucia. However, there will be no dancing as social distancing measures will still apply. Casinos and gambling halls can also open, with a maximum of 50 per cent of capacity. At this point in time, only those living in Andalucia can travel between provinces. Each autonomous community will also control measures around the reopening of beaches.

FIREFIGHTERS have once again been lending a hand on the efforts to disinfect the streets in the busiest areas of Adra. The members of the Poniente fire service focused particularly on seafront promenades, areas around health centres and roads used by the greatest number of people.

Lighting the way ILLUMINATED signs have been put up at pedestrian crossings at two of the points on the main road going into Cuevas del Almanzora to improve safety. The council said the local residents had been calling for the crossings on the N-332 near the bus stop and at the crossroads at the entrance to the town centre to be lit up due to the hundreds of people who use them every day and the constant traffic on the road. There are also the secondary school, a supermarket and a block of flats in the same area. The local authority passed on the demand to the Junta de Andalucia, which has responsibility for the road.

Back where she belongs A TURTLE is back in her natural habitat on the Costa Almeria after several months recovering from swallowing plastic. Members of the Equinac marine life rescue association assisted by the Guardia Civil Maritime Service released Teresa the loggerhead sea turtle back into the sea last week. Equinac reported that Teresa had been treated at its Almerimar centre for a severe case of pneumonia as well as for ingesting a large amount of plastic materials. The association said conditions were perfect on the day for reintroducing the turtle to the sea, which in Equinac’s care has doubled its body weight and made a full recovery. PULPI Council has called on the Junta de Andalucia to make the giant geode and the mine which houses the geological marvel to be awarded natural monument status. The request, which got the unanimous backing of the local authority, sets out the need to establish “rules and basis for the protection and correct use of the Pulpi geode, the Rica Mine and surroundings, with

Market reopening ADRA’S popular street market is reopening on Saturday June 13 with limits on the number of shoppers and stalls. Police nab cash thief POLICE nabbed a thief just after he threatened an El Ejido shop owner and made off with €600. The victim called the police and reported a man armed with a sharp object had stolen her cash. As soon as police officers had got a description of the man they set about looking for him. Within minutes they came across an individual matching the description in a nearby street. It turned out the object he’d used was a knife sharpener. Police charged the suspect, identified as 30-yearold J S S, with violent robbery and intimidation.

Unemployment up ALMERIA was the only province in Andalucia where unemployment went up in May. Last month ended with another 2,727 people out of work in Almeria and put the provincial jobless total at 72,160, figures from the SEPE State Employment Public Service revealed. This represents an increase of 3.93 per cent on April, and is a whopping 23.13 per cent more than in the same month last year. By contrast, Andalucia-wide there was a dip in the jobless figures of 0.94 per cent in May, or 9,210 less people out of work than a month earlier. Some of the rise in unemployment in Almeria was down to the end of the provincial agricultural campaign, accounting for 878 of the newly out of work, but 2,070 were service sector workers. On the positive side, 382 jobs were created in the province’s construction sector over the month.

DISAGREEMENT: An individual got into an argument with the bar owner and his sons. A BAR brawl in El Ejido ended with injuries and arrests. Several Guardia Civil and USECIA Citizen Safety Unit patrols, along with Local Police, sped to the establishment in the Norias de Daza area after a call came through reporting a fight involving a bunch of individuals. The officers found one person on the floor with various injuries to their head, back and limbs, some of

which were stab wounds requiring urgent medical assistance. It turned out they had got into an argument with the bar owner and his two sons. Officers identified the trio, all of whom had also got hurt in the altercation. The Guardia said the incident resulted in the detention of the father and sons, who all had police records, and a fourth individual on assault charges.

Antibody levels low ONLY 2.5 per cent of Almeria’s population has had Covid-19 and developed antibodies to the virus, a study reveals. This compares with a national average rate of 5.2 per cent. The findings come from the second round of the Carlos III Health Institute-led national study on the seroprevalence of coronavirus. A total of 63,564 people took part in the study across Spain, carried out May 18 and June 1.

House blaze rescue QUICK-THINKING Guardia Civil officers rescued a woman trapped by a blaze at her home in La Mojonera. They found the woman lying on the ground in the porch and locked in behind metal railings. Acting as speedily as they could, the officers forced open a gate, and

with the help of fire extinguishers to give them a way through, got inside the property though the garage and got her outside. She was taken by ambulance to the Poniente hospital in El Ejido. Firefighters from the Bomberos del Poniente service managed to completely extinguish the fire in the two-storey house.

FOUR North Africans a re u n d e r a r re s t f o r trying to smuggle dozens of illegal immigrants into Costa Almeria. The four men were skippering two boats, one with 18 Algerians on board and one carrying a group of 17 Moroccans, which the Spanish authorities found drifting off the provincial coast. Police said each immigrant had handed over the equivalent of between €1,500 and €2,000. They were then given different days for meeting at nightfall on beaches in Oran and Sidi Dejoud to set out for Spain. Up until the beginning of the Coronavirus health crisis, Eleisha was working as a tour guide showing tourists around London and places like the British Museum. However, she began to feel ill and decided to selfisolate. Luckily for her, her symptoms passed within around a week. “At that point, tour operators had ceased business due to lack of custom and I found out that the NHS was looking for volunteers for the Nightingale project, so I applied. “When Nightingale hospitals called me back they discussed a position with

plasma through a transfusion 28 days after their symptoms had passed. Also, donors were either contacted by the government or had registered for the trial.” Eleisha also spoke of some situations during assessment where there were not enough antibodies and also that not many women can donate as criteria state the donor must weigh more

than 70 kilos and be of a certain height. Also the transfusion is a two-way system, the blood goes out, the machine separates your red cells from the plasma and then puts the red cells back in, to do that you need a large vein and men tend to have larger veins. The trials are taking place at the flagship clinic in the west end of London but are soon to stretch to other pop-up clinics throughout the city. At this moment in time, there are four people receiving treatment and being constantly monitored for improvements. When asked about the positive impact of the work she is doing Eleisha said, “Many of the donors have had a tough time, some have been very ill or lost family members. They really want to help in any way they can. To see that is humbling”

WORKING in collaboration, the Guardia Civil and National Police have arrested a gang consisting of eight men who specialised in impersonating police and robbing other criminal organisations. The joint investigation started last year when a Colombian individual was stopped by a group claiming to be police officers who violently robbed the man. Officers soon discovered two similar violent attacks in Madrid and

Street chase identified the group which consisted of Spanish, Colombian, French and Venezuelan individuals and concluded that they were very wellequipped which allowed them to impersonate officers. When a raid went ahead at their warehouse and homes, two

of the men tried to escape and were chased through the streets of Madrid, placing civilians in danger, ramming several cars and injuring an officer. Items seized included uniforms, badges, firearms, ammunition, handcuffs and various tools. The members of the gang have been charged with a string of offences including robbery with violence, illegal detention, impersonating police, possession of illegal weapons and attacking a police officer.

RENFE’S low-cost high-speed rail will NOT run until a later date. T H E m u c h a n t i c i p a t e d AV L O , a new low-cost version of Renfe’s AVE, connecting Madrid with B a rc e l o n a a t h i g h s p e e d s f o r a fraction of the price, was presumed to begin in April; however this initiative has been put on the back burner due to the coronavirus crisis. The Minister of Transport and Mobility, Jose Luis Abalos, has announced that, at least on a shortterm basis, this new high speed train will have to be postponed to a later date under which new mobility conditions allow for its operation again. The Minister admits that “I don’t find it feasible that we can provide

a ‘low cost’ service during this short space of time” and that “right now with the current issues about social distancing this would be complicated.” A day after the State of Alarm was announced, on March 14, Renfe suspended the inauguration of its new AVLO which was due to begin connecting passengers between Madrid and Barcelona at a low price, yet high speed. In the moment of its suspension, the transport operator had already commercialised around a third of its initial sales for the new service. Due to this suspension of services, the operator was forced to refund customers for their purchases.

Croc search still on A PROFESSIONAL tracker has cast doubt on witness reports of a crocodile cruising a river. Local Police and the Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil (Seprona) are trying to locate a oneand-a-half metre crocodile sighted in the area of Pesqueruela, in the Simancas district of Valladolid after various people claimed to have

seen the reptile. But on Monday, June 8, a professional tracker from Chelonia Association for Conservation, Research and Planning of Natural Resources, Fernando Gómez, said tracks found on the banks of Pesqueruela, “do not correspond, in any case, to a large reptile.” He said that the evidence observed so far, footprints and remains

of a semi-devoured fish “do not correspond with the trail that a large reptile would leave.” But in a statement obtained by Efe and El Norte de Castilla, he added “that does not mean it is not there.” With regards to the remains of the fish found, Gómez said it is more likely to have been an otter which ate it. However, the search is still underway.

IN a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and heads of the autonomous regions and cities, he confirmed the availability of €16 billion to help face the fallout from the coron­ avirus, Covid­19 pandemic. The split will be €9 billion for health, €2 billion for education and €5 billion to assist local economic recovery, al­ though how much each region is to re­ ceive has not yet been revealed. It is expected that the money will be distributed between July and December of this year.

Home workers protected IN the new Spain, a huge num­ ber of workers will continue to be encouraged to work from home, but the government recognises that it will have to in­ troduce working regulations to ensure no diminution of employ­ ment rights. For this reason, the Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz has confirmed that her department will be closely examining the situation in order to ensure that those who volun­ teer to work from home are not discriminated against.

She intends to ensure that there is no loss of income or any rights that they would have ex­ pected if working in an office or similar location ­ this means no removal of the rights to claim expenses (if they previously ex­ isted), continued rights to pro­ motion and professional training and the ability to belong to a trade union or similar organisa­ tion to represent the individual. There will be a section which deals with working hours and the rights to enjoy rest periods during the day and employers

will need to take into account the individual’s mental health, especially if there is an apparent feeling of isolation. The employer may well benefit from a reduction in costs of hous­ ing its employees and should see less ‘sick days’ whilst the employ­ ee should be able to spend more time with the family as commut­ ing time will be drastically cut and should save travel costs. The downside is that a general time spirit amongst workers may be lost as they no longer physi­ cally meet and interact.

Who pays for terrace? Are community terraces the whole responsibility of the community? The terraces, according to the original builder, are the responsibility of the commu­ nity, but several of the houses have a shared terrace and other properties have their own small terrace area. I be­ lieve the community is only responsible for the tiled roof area, but not the terrace walls. Several of the owners have paid for maintenance of the terrace area out of their own pockets, but other owners claim the community should pay. He is granted exclusive use of the space, but he does not own it. Who should pay for upkeep? Blaming a racist virus

WHAT these rioter/protester mobs don’t understand, is that every screaming disruption and malicious destruction of public property gains thousands of more votes for Donald Trump! Although the turn out for these demonstrations appears to be extensive, they are a mere fraction of the overall population, most of whom totally abhor this type of mob action; particularly when it is emerging that many are allegedly being financed by billionaire George Soros, as part of his supposed intention to bring anarchy to the USA! Trump’s appearance holding a bible and posing for an impromptu photo call outside the St John’s church was a brilliant PR exercise. To the bible belt and all those convinced that ‘God is on their side,’ plus his statement that he was the ‘President of law and order’ and was prepared to bring in troops to restore this order, would have won him millions of supporters, and to my mind absolutely guaranteed another Whitehouse term. And what are these so called protesters chanting about anyway. Justice? Well just a minute, hasn’t the perpetrator in this case been arrested for murder and three

While we’re about it, what about all the black populace who have committed horrendous murders of white victims? What about the black man Kori Ali Mohamad, who admitted killing four people, as recently as March of this year, simply ‘because they were white’? How easily we

forget the vicious murders of two innocent white people carried out by OJ Simpson, who was initially found not guilty by a jury comprised mainly of black elderly women in what was considered one of the worst miscarriages of justice in recent history. It took a civil unbiased court to subsequently find him guilty, but at no time did we witness hordes of white protesters screaming, looting and baying for blood.

No, I’m afraid that to me racism is a twoway street and those who scream racism the loudest are in fact often the biggest racists of all. It has also recently been established that more ethnic minorities and black people are dying of the Corona disease than white. What hasn’t been made clear is why? We have just witnessed large gatherings of mainly black and ethnic people, completely ignoring the government’s directives in social distancing; in the same way as I reported nearly two months ago, when I observed that even then advice was being ignored by the ethnic communities. Many mosques remained open and some Imams were even telling their followers that it wasn’t their problem and was in fact ‘the wrath of Allah on the infidels’! At the time I wrote that in a few weeks, when they began dropping like flies, they would probably be blaming the indigenous population or the government for their problems. Clear and sensible Dear Euro Weekly News, I am a British expat who has lived in Spain for many years. During the Coronavirus pandemic, I have been very impressed by the Spanish government’s reaction and lockdown rules that have been employed and the clear and sensible relaxations that are being made now as and when safe to do so. The Spanish residents have all acted in a sensible and law-abiding way too.

OUR VIEW Mutual respect

AS many people have started to return to their workplaces whilst coronavirus isolation eases off, we must ask are these companies ready? Yes, there are to be new health and sanitary measures put into place to save the spread of any virus but surely there will need to be help in place for the effects on employees’ mental health. Whether it be from being stuck in the house with minimal or no contact with others to loss of family members, having suffered from the virus themselves, to facing a new, changed world and even just the pressure of getting stuck back into projects and actual work. Some may fear the return to normal they have been hoping for. In the two months, they have been out of a work environment people have learned to use their time in different ways, taken up activities that they may not have time for when they return to work, gained new skills or found some kind of peace. These may be things that they will be reluctant to let go of or struggle to continue with. People may now have realised that they can live a life without five coffees at Pret a Manger every day or wardrobes full of clothes. This new normal could now allow people to prioritise lifestyle and well-being over work. Companies should be ready for this, will they meet their employees halfway to ease them back into their role? Will they nurture and value them more in an understanding that we have all been through this together. We must remember that everyone from interns, office staff, managers and CEOs have had to deal with fear and create a new life that is comfortable. Let’s hope with that joint experience comes a mutual respect.

Thanks for action. Contrast this to the shambolic way that Boris Johnson and the British government have reacted and it makes me truly ashamed to be British. The British government is going against a lot of the scientific advice that is being given at the moment and are relaxing the lockdown regulations while the infection and death rate is still too high. There are also a large number of people ignoring the social distancing rules and regulations and it is like a ticking time bomb just waiting to explode into a new and deadly spike of infections. The most worrying point at the moment is if Spain goes ahead as planned to open up to tourism, will there be checks in place on all those coming into the country especially from places like the UK? Will the tourists be policed in the strict manner needed? Tourism is very important to the Spanish economy, I just hope that the resumption is done slowly and carefully so that the country doesn’t get a second spike in infections causing unnecessary pain, death and suffering. Leftie, rightie, Leapy Dear Leapy Lee Why do you call anyone who dares to criticise the current Tory government a ‘leftie’? Surely, in a democracy, anyone has the right, whatever their political leanings, to criticise their government if they feel it has made mistakes. In the current Coronavirus crisis the UK government has left a lot to be desired in their response, yet you are prepared to excuse them by saying they have found themselves in an unprecedented situation, but it is an unprecedented situation for ALL governments of the world and many have tackled it much better. COMMENTS FROM FACEBOOK The Spanish Government to Announce New Regulations if a Coronavirus Vaccine is not Available How are they going to include the testing as law? There is a human rights law that prevents you from being made to have a treatment that you do not want. And you cannot be discriminated against for that choice. If we are now being told to have a test or we will be discriminated against, it is against Article 6, section 1, of the UNESCO 2005 statement of Bioethics and Human rights. Paul Ash it doesn’t yet. It does say... ‘Among them, all the suspected cases of Covid-19 are obliged to carry out PCR or derived tests.’ That is medical treatment which you can choose not to have and should not be discriminated against if you decide not to have it based on the fact it is not accurate. If the person who won the Nobel prize for inventing RT/PCR testing, Karey Banks Mullis, has himself said that you are not to use the PCR test for diagnosis as it is 81 per cent false positive and cannot differentiate between any of the seven human corona virus ailments, why should it be compulsory to be used and made to be mandatory in the ‘new normal’?

Sleep tight THE global health crisis has given everybody a little extra stress due to not spending time at work, re-

lationship issues or being cooped up with your family all day. It can become too

much, so it’s possible your sleep may suffer. Anxiety from thinking you can’t sleep can make things worse. Free your mind and the rest will follow. Try keeping a notebook to write down things you’re worrying about. An overheated body can be disruptive to your sleep. Wear light cottons and make sure your bedroom is kept cool and dark through the night. Physical comfort is critical for sleep, so invest in a decent mattress. Almost half of our life is spent in bed, so it’s worth investing in one that gives the right support and prevents back pain. Eating and drinking before bed can affect sleep. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and sugar and opt for a glass of warm milk or a cup of chamomile tea to induce sleep.

A day in our shoes: Understanding What It Feels Like MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED FOR someone looking in from the outside I can only imagine how confusing it must be to understand someone who has Bipolar. If you have a friend or family member living with bipolar disorder, this person may be afraid to share how they really feel. During these emotional highs known as mania - I may become full of energy and overly excited about everything and anything! Sometimes, all you see is a fun, optimistic, and bubbly person - the life of the party. But other times, you may notice erratic and strange behaviours with their joyful mood. I become more talkative, to the point where others can’t get a word in. I also speak fast, or come off as impulsive and easily distracted. I tend to be quite repetitive, telling you the same story a million times! When I’m in a depressive episode, I want to be left alone but then get lonely and think everyone is avoiding me! I don’t want to go anywhere, see anyone, or do anything. It’s like no m a t t e r what I do, I’m doing something wrong. So, the easiest way to feel better is to hide. Seeing everyone carrying on, living their happy little lives is an annoying reminder of my bipolar disorder and how I’ll never have that kind of stability. No matter what it is - I don’t enjoy things because the smallest details annoy me. If friends invite me out, I imagine waiting for the bus, being crammed against people, crowded bars, and all the other negative things. I think of every possible downside of something, which leaves me dreading the idea of doing anything. I analyse every possible worse case scenario.

I turn into this grumpy overly obsessive lady! During these episodes when I think about the future, I don’t like what I see. I can only see more troubles, endless work to keep well, and an endless string of letdowns and failed relationships. But there is also a place inbetween - the middle - between the mania and the depressions there is a small breathing space, I get to catch my breath back, and build up enough energy to roll out the punches the average day gives me! It never lasts for long, so I make the most of it and enjoy it whilst it lasts …I’m not freaking out over small problems, I enjoy the little things, and I’m not loathing the future. I feel normal (my kind of normal!) and it’s how I see myself. I’m not some lunatic running around or some long face lazy slug! I honestly wish I could stay in this mindset all the time, but I know that won’t happen. I’ve accepted that my moods will change on their own. The key to understanding this illness is it’s unpredictable not the person suffering it, but the illness. I am not unpredictable, but my illness is. Take it one day at a time with your loved one. Have patience. Healing and understanding the illness doesn’t happen over night, and it’s completely nor mal to worry about your loved one during their mania and depressive episodes. But the most important thing of all is DON’T GIVE UP ON US … We need your guiding light to keep going, keep believing in us. A quote from my mum when I became really ill eight years ago : “All the time I had hope, I said it for you, and thought it for you even when I knew you had none. I fought to feel it for you, knowing that if I doubted even one single moment you would slip away and the second chance we had with you would be lost.” Love Ms Bipolar x
