MASKS A MUST
SO, it looks like we should get used to wearing face masks, as just as they are obligatory to wear in Spain during the current State of Alarm measures, they look to play a major part in the forthcoming ‘new normality.’ The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday June 9 the decree of measures for the new normality. In principle, this period will last until there is a vaccine or an effective treatment against Covid-19. Face masks will be mandatory and fines for
failing to comply will be up to €100. The communities must be prepared for another outbreak. However, there will be no movement restriction or limit of people who can meet. Health Minister Salvador Illa has repeated that residents must “learn to live with the virus.” This new stage will begin when the State of Alarm ends on June 21. The control of the Covid19 will rest, in this new normality, on prevention. “Individual responsibility will be key,” said Salvador Illa. Hence rules stated by Illa

passengers. Operators will have to keep the passenger record for four weeks when they have an assigned seat for possible contagion traces. In workplaces, it will have to be ensured that the distance between workers can be kept to 1.5 metres and accesses organised so that there are no concentrations when entering or leaving. Solution for traffic jams WORK started on the new road built to ease traffic flow to Albir. This connects the N-332 main road and the CV753 Camino Viejo de Altea which, despite its name stops short at the entrance to Albir. The road, which includes a new roundabout, will cost an estimated €832,991 and should be completed
within six months, announced Alfaz’s Town Planning councillor Toni Such. Constructing the muchneeded road was preceded by lengthy negotiations with the central government’s Ministry of Public Works and Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion, Such revealed. Building the road re-
quired the compulsory purchase of five plots of land with an area of 9,407 square metres, but despite their nominal value of €130,400, Alfaz Town Hall finally paid out only €7,000, the councillor said. The two-lane road, which joins the CV-753 at the Magic Robin Hood holiday park, will have a hard shoulder on both sides and pavements.
Beach assistants ONE THOUSAND young people will be working as ‘tourist assistants’ on Valencian Community beaches this summer. Ximo Puig, president of the Generalitat Valenciana, announced that the assistants, aged between 18 and 30, will explain health and safety measures that should be observed on the region’s beaches to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
Present on the beaches of 80 Valencian Community municipalities, they will also send feedback to the regional government’s Tourism Board regarding occupancy of the beaches for incorporation in an App for beachgoers. Beach assistants will be assigned to each of the region’s three provinces, according to the needs of each municipality.

MONTPELLIER SNAKE: Only mildly poisonous.
THE Local Police of Elda recently had to remove two poisonous Montpellier snakes from the town centre. The first, a relatively small specimen, was spotted sunning itself on the patio of a house on Calle Espronceda. As it belongs to a protected species, it
was carefully removed and later freed unharmed on the edge of nearby Monte Bolon. Officers were called out again two days later when another, considerably larger, Montpellier snake was seen on the stairs of a wing at the Miguel Servet school.
Again, it was removed without difficulty and released in La Melva, a rural area outside Elda. The Montpellier snake, which is aggressive when cornered, has a painful bite that causes local inflammation, but is only mildly poisonous and not life-threatening.

A GANDIA Local Police officer who was quarantined after testing positive for coronavirus has now tested negative. Thanks to this second result, the security procedures imposed on a group of officers who had been in contact with him have been lifted by the town hall and the local health authorities. According to sources quoted in the local Spanish media, the officer who shared the same shift has also tested negative, to the relief of the town hall. None of Gandia’s Local Police officers have tested positive for the virus throughout the pandemic, and the force can now return to normal, the same sources said.
Interest free debt VILLAJOYOSA Town Council has provisionally approved an amendment of article 6 of the Tax Ordinance on Property and Real Estate Tax which means arrears can be paid in instalments without interest. Taxpayers who are in a situation of vulnerability, with special economic difficulties, can pay the debts in instalments without accruing interest for delay.

ANALYSIS of Calpe’s sewers ‘barely’ detected traces of the coronavirus. A series of analyses carried out by Global Omnium throughout the Valencian Community following agreements with town and city halls which included Calpe and Javea in Alicante Province, as well as Gandia and Valencia City in Valencia. Although the coronavirus is still present in the region’s sewers, levels on May 30 were the lowest since lockdown began in March, Omnium said. The company has not yet published official reports, but sources quoted in the regional Spanish media claimed that analyses at the end of May gave ‘practically zero’ readings for Javea and Calpe. Results were also encouraging for Gandia, a zone with a low incidence throughout the crisis, despite a recentlyconfirmed handful of Covid-19 cases. Ximo Puig, president of the regional government recently visited the Omnium laboratories, accompanied by Ana Barcelo who heads the Valencian Community’s Public Health department. While there, Puig stressed that the Generalitat will act “with maximum prudence” before progressing to Phase Three of the central government’s de-escalation programme.

New home for Dali A TAMARIN monkey found in Calpe some weeks ago, now lives at the AAP Primadomus primates rescue centre in Villena. A British resident spotted the squirrel-sized monkey, now named Dali, wandering near his home on a Calpe urbanisation soon after lockdown was announced. After several days and some failed attempts, he managed to put the animal in a cat-carrier and took it to a nearby vet who found that the monkey, Dali, by then very nervous and screeching loudly, had no microchip or any other form of identification and the vet could also see that its tail was bloody where it had repeatedly bitten itself – common behaviour in primates when they are stressed - but was able to cure its wounds, following instructions from the medical team at Promadomus. Dali has only just arrived at Primadomus owing to State of Alarm regulations but he was in good health, the rescue centre said. His owner has never been traced and Primadomus explained that the tamarin, a native of South America, was probably one of the many exotic animals illegally trafficked and smuggled into Spain.

Rastro returns THE Rastro antiques market of Jalon has opened for the first time since mid-March. There were inevitable differences, owing to anti-coronavirus measures, with only a quarter of the usual number of stalls, and preference given to antiques. “This is a way of returning to the Rastro’s origins, as it began with antiques,” explained Jalon’s Commerce councillor Lore Blasco. “And we’re one of the first of Spain’s Rastros to reopen,” she added. The Saturday Rastro is at the heart of the municipality’s economy and reopening it a priority, although all health and safety measures have been strictly observed. Stallholders also had to fill in new forms, specifying the characteristics of the items they sell.

A HUGE slab of rock weighing several tones broke away from the Les Rotes cliffs in Denia and fell into the sea near the Mena restaurant car park. The remaining section of conglomerate rock, badly eroded by successive storms, was later cordoned-off by Denia’s Local Police.
Palace project A CENTURY after it was declared a National Monument, Oliva’s 13th century ruined Palacio Condal is to be restored. Oliva’s mayor David Gonzalez recently visited the site, whose €12 million makeover will begin with an initial investment of €387,000. Once this has been completed next November, residents and tourists should be able to visit some parts of the precinct, Gonzalez said.

Phased launch FEW reservations and uncertainty over how and when travel can start are putting the brakes on Benidorm’s summer season. Hoteliers’ association Hosbec foresees 25 per cent occupancy ‘at best’ for July, assuming inter-region travel is possible for autonomous communities such as Madrid, one of the Costa Blanca’s principal tourist markets. Big local chains like Magic Costa Blanca, Servigroup and Med Playa are planning a gradual start to the summer season. Magic Costa Blanca will reopen its first Benidorm hotel on June 22, with the remainder on June 29. “It’s going to be an atypical summer,” its vice-president Javier Garcia said. “Many hotels will remain closed.” Servigroup expects a phased reopening of its hotels from July 1 while Med Playa plans to open only two of its seven Benidorm hotels from July 7. The remainder will wait until August, waiting for the arrival of foreign tourists - above all from the UK - once air travel resumes.

More officers FOUR Local Police officers were formally sworn in at Villajoyosa Town Hall. La Vila’s mayor Andreu Verdu congratulated the officers, two male and two female, congratulating them for their good work during some “difficult weeks” where they had to put the lives of the local population before their own. The town hall had begun formalising the incorporation of the new officers into the Local Police earlier this year, Verdu explained, but this had to be delayed “like so many other administrative procedures,” during the State of Alarm.

THE mayor of Alfaz Vicente Arques held an online meeting with the t o w n ’s groups, associations and members of the public. The streamed meeting had 500 viewers as Arques explained the measures introduced to combat the Covid19 crisis and answered
residents’ questions. The local community’s response has been exemplary during the State of Alarm, the mayor said, but emphasised that it was essential to continue using common sense throughout the transition to normality. During the meeting Arques announced
that the local government is working towards revitalising Alfaz’s economy. Some projects are already underway, with others in the pipeline that will allow Alfaz to maintain and defend its position as a healthgiving tourist destination, the mayor declared.
PAQUITA, a woman in her 70’s, was found dead by police at her home in San Juan de Alicante. The body of her partner, Pascual, who appeared to have committed suicide was later discovered in an apartment that the couple owned in Campello. The couple who were unmarried had lived together for many years and had several children from other relationships. Police entered the San Juan home, alerted by worried relatives who had not heard from Paquita from several days. They are now investigating her death as a possible gender violence killing, although initially her body showed no signs of violence, said sources close to the investigation.
Lifeguards back THE lifesaving service has begun on Moraira’s beaches and continues until September 30. The lifeguards and rescue boat are currently present between 11am and 7pm but from July 13 until August 23 this will be increased to 10am and 8pm when the beaches are expected to be at their busiest.

A WOMAN of 48 was helicoptered off Puig Campana after she injured her leg while walking on the mountain. Owing to the inaccessibility of the spot where she slipped and fell, mobilising the Consortium of Fire Brigades helicopter was the only option for evacuating her from Finestrat’s 1,406-metre mountain. The woman, a Santa Pola resident, was winched up into the helicopter and flown to San Vicente, from where she was transferred to hospital.
A MAN of 30 has been remanded after stabbing his p a re n t s i n S a n Vi c e n t e o n Thursday night. Flames spread to the town’s industrial area, threatening the
donations to assist with food vouchers, supplies for the Food Bank and the Gandia Men’s Refuge. “The measures imposed to ensure our safety have taken their toll on some people’s financial circumstances and we aim to help wherever it is needed,” they said. Having begun with pupils at local schools and residents, masks will now be given to the remainder of the local population, explained Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez. “Prevention continues to be the best way of fighting Covid19 and wearing face masks is fundamental,” he said. “The town hall has tried to ensure that all of the registered population has access to this form of protection, beginning with children and adolescents.”

With two simultaneous rapid-charging points that provide enough power for 100 kilometres in 15 minutes, the additional sta-
tion will be particularly useful for the company, which has 16 electric vehicles, said Jose Chulvi who is Amjasa’s president as well as the local mayor. The new charging station is beside the Amjasa offices in Cami Cabanes and can be used 24 hours a day.
NOVELDA-BORN Maje Moreno and her lover Salvador will be tried in October for murdering her husband Antonio Navarro. Both face 40-year prison sentences and this week Valencia’s Upper Court of Justice (TSJ) selected 36 people at random, nine of whom will form the jury that decides whether Maje persuaded Salva to kill her husband in August 2017. Then 27, Maje was a nurse at a private hospital in Valencia City where she met Salva (47), a nursing auxiliary unaware that he had several rivals. Salva, believing Maje was a victim of domestic violence, stabbed Antonio Navarro to death in a carefully planned attack, willingly taking the blame although investigators suspected Maje’s involvement long before their January 2018 arrests. Any of the nine can reject jury duty or be rejected claiming possible media contamination or other circumstances favourable or unfavourable to the accused. Few of the jury will be unaware of the murder’s torrid background, extensively covered and interpreted by the Spanish media who repeatedly refer to Maje as the Black Widow. It is unlikely that she can have a fair trial, her lawyers argue.

By this time, the Guardia Civil officers had noticed a child’s clothes on a clothes dryer and several toys on the floor and the relative admitted that the woman was living there. She was finally persuaded to appear with the child in her arms. The

officers saw that he was in perfect health although he is a ward of the German authorities owing to a psychiatric condition. The mother has now handed over her son, who is temporarily in the care of a children’s centre in Valencia, waiting for the German authorities to take charge of him.

Plasma trials EXCLUSIVE By Damon Mitchell EURO WEEKLY NEWS spoke exclusively with London based Eleisha Rae Kennedy who is currently working with NHS Blood and Transplant. Up until the beginning of the Coronavirus health crisis, Eleisha was working as a tour guide showing tourists around London and places like the British Museum. However, she began to feel ill and decided to self-isolate. Luckily for her, her symptoms passed within around a week. “At that point, tour operators had ceased business due to lack of custom and I found out that the NHS was looking for volunteers for the Nightingale project, so I applied. “When Nightingale hospitals called me back they discussed a position with NHS Blood and Transplant, which I was very happy to take on,” said Eleisha.
FLAGSHIP CLINIC: Looking for antibody levels that may fight the virus. “They were creating a trial where we would take convalescent plasma from people who had had the Covid infection and had recovered in the hope that the subject may have higher antibody levels that may fight the virus,” she explained and went on to say
that “Donors were able to give plasma through a transfusion 28 days after their symptoms had passed. Also, donors were either contacted by the government or had registered for the trial.” Eleisha also spoke of some situations during assessment
where there were not enough antibodies and also that not many women can donate as criteria state the donor must weigh more than 70 kilos and be of a certain height. Also the transfusion is a two-way system, the blood goes out, the machine separates your red cells from the plasma and then puts the red cells back in, to do that you need a large vein and men tend to have larger veins. The trials are taking place at the flagship clinic in the west end of London but are soon to stretch to other pop-up clinics throughout the city. At this moment in time, there are four people receiving treatment and being constantly monitored for improvements. When asked about the positive impact of the work she is doing Eleisha said, “Many of the donors have had a tough time, some have been very ill or lost family members. They really want to help in any way they can. To see that is humbling”

The study showed 10 per cent of people had used a cleaning or disinfecting spray on their bodies, and 6 per cent had inhaled vapour from household cleaners or disinfectants.

The FLOOR CLAUSE as it affects businesses could claim against the floor clause that banks included in their mortgage loans, even in those cases in which the loan was required to be used by the borrower in their professional activity. In this resolution, the
court concedes that, although it is true that it is not generally possible to apply the controls and protection measures provided in the regulations for the protection of consumers and users, in the cases where the borrower is a professional, this does not mean that professionals are totally unprotected against possible abuse from banks. According to the resolution of the Supreme Court, in contracts between professionals, although transparency and abusiveness controls are not applicable, in accordance with the general contracting conditions law, the floor clause must pass the incorporation control established in its article 5. This control in the assessment by the court
suggests that when the borrower gave his consent to sign the loan, he should have been able to know of the inclusion in the contract of the floor clause and therefore its content and consequences. This is how the Supreme Court understands it by establishing that: “For a general condition of the contract to pass the incorporation control, it must be a clause with a clear, concrete and simple wording, which allows a normal grammatical understanding and that the adherent has had a real opportunity to know at the time of entering into the contract. “That means that, besides the parameter of clarity and comprehensibility, the requirement of the possibility of knowl-
edge must concur, since the incorporation control is, fundamentally, a control of knowability.” In this specific case, there was a mortgage loan to acquire a taxi licence. In this loan, the bank included a clause limiting the variability of interest (floor clause), but the bank did not provide the clients with the precontractual documents and the information they were obliged to in accordance with the law (the FIBER). Therefore, the court understood that the floor clause did not pass the incorporation control since the lack of documents and information needed by law to be provided by the bank meant that the clients were not able to know the real existence of the floor clause. Therefore, if you are a

Beyond duty
SHOPLIFTER: Was only trying to feed his family. A POLICE officer paid for a ‘shoplifter’s’ baby food after hearing his financial troubles due to the crisis. Rather than arresting a 35-year-old father who tried to steal four jars of baby food, the policeman paid for the goods and told him to go home. The man was captured on supermarket CCTV cameras in Zarragoza entering the store and going directly to the baby food aisle, where he was seen putting the items in his pocket and looking nervous. As is normal procedure, the police were called.
But as the man explained he is a father who is out of work at the moment, times are hard and he is struggling to feed his family, fellow shoppers apparently took out their purses and offered to pay for the items. A National Police team arrived and spoke to staff, shoppers and the suspect before telling him "to leave, that there is nothing against him." As the would-be shoplifter was leaving the store, one of the officers reportedly paid for the jars of baby food, valued at around €8, and gave them to him.

Knife attack A 36-YEAR-OLD Bolivian w o m a n i s u n d e r a r re s t o n suspicion of killing her ex in a violent knife attack in Madrid. Guardia Civil reportedly detained the woman after she contacted the emergency services in the early hours of June 6 to report her 47-yearold for mer partner, also Bolivian, had stabbed himself in the ribs in an establishment in the Villa del Prado neighbourhood of the city. According to Spanish press, the woman contradicted herself during the course of the call while explaining what supposedly happened, raising the Guardia’s suspicions about her version of the events. AN international gang with many bases in Spain has been broken up with more than 5,000 kilos of hashish seized from a yacht off the coast of Senegal. The whole project started in Mallorca when officers of the Guardia Civil spotted a yacht in the harbour at Palma which they believed may have been involved in the ongoing smuggling of the drug. As more information became available, officers recognised that this was a serious and large group involved in the smuggling
which ran from Africa to Spain and they contacted Frontex (the European Border and Coast Guard Agency), the Italian Police, the Senegalese Police and Navy. A coordinated action against all of those suspected of being part of the drug smuggling group took place in Barcelona, Girona (Blanes and Pontevedra which ended up with 16 arrests. In addition, the Senegalese Navy intercepted the yacht which was carrying 5,140 kilos of hashish.

POLICE in Barcelona have arrested five men after a brutal street robbery in broad daylight. The event took place at 5.45pm on Sunday, June 8, in the city’s Rambla del Raval, when five Moroccan males surrounded and assaulted a passer-by to steal his watch. The victim tried to escape as his attackers can be seen throwing punches at him and pulling him around, causing some of them to fall to the ground. The group of assailants all fled moments later. Mossos d’Esquadra officers who were in the area reportedly witnessed the event and, with the help of other patrols, managed to catch the five suspects and arrest them.

Illegal Pup farm SEPRONA, the Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil suspected that there was an unlicensed puppy farm breeding animals in unsanitar y conditions in Maella, Zaragoza and started an investigation. They discovered that what had once been a far m breeding rabbits had been turned over to breeding dogs by the 69-year-old Briton and a 50-year-old Romanian woman and when they inspected the site, accompanied by council veterinarians, they were horrified at what they found. There were no proper sanitary arrangements and animals were left in cages contaminated with urine and faeces, with little evidence of sufficient food, water or veterinary treatment. They found various drugs, a number of

RENFE’S low-cost high-speed rail will NOT run until a later date. T H E m u c h a n t i c i p a t e d AV L O , a new low-cost version of Renfe’s AVE, connecting Madrid with B a rc e l o n a a t h i g h s p e e d s f o r a fraction of the price, was presumed to begin in April; however this initiative has been put on the back burner due to the coronavirus crisis. The Minister of Transport and Mobility, Jose Luis Abalos, has announced that, at least on a shortterm basis, this new high speed train will have to be postponed to a later date under which new mobility conditions allow for its operation again. The Minister admits that “I don’t find it feasible that we can provide
a ‘low cost’ service during this short space of time” and that “right now with the current issues about social distancing this would be complicated.” A day after the State of Alarm was announced, on March 14, Renfe suspended the inauguration of its new AVLO which was due to begin connecting passengers between Madrid and Barcelona at a low price, yet high speed. In the moment of its suspension, the transport operator had already commercialised around a third of its initial sales for the new service. Due to this suspension of services, the operator was forced to refund customers for their purchases.

Phase 2 MOVIN
WHILST the majority of Spain has already moved to Phase 3, others like Madrid and Barcelona moved to Phase 2 on Monday and both the north and south of Costa Blanca have chosen to remain in Phase 2. In Phase 2, restaurants and bars can now reopen their interior dining areas provided capacity is limited to 40 per cent. Terraces will continue at 50 per cent of capacity. Up to 15 people can now meet for social gatherings but social distancing measures should still be respected between those who don’t live together. Residents are allowed to move freely within their province, including to their second homes. Shops and stores can open independently of their size, but with capacity limited to 40 per cent. Open-air markets are allowed with a third of normal stands. Hotels and tourist accommodations can reopen their common areas, provided capacity is kept to 30 per cent. Cinemas, theatres, auditoriums and culture venues can reopen, with capacity limited to 30 per cent. Shopping centres can open with capacity limited to 40 per cent within shops and 30 per cent in communal areas. Casinos can open at 50 per cent capacity. Open-air concerts are allowed, but the public must be seated, observing social distancing, with capacity at 30 per cent and limited to 400 people. Swimming pools can open at 30 per cent capacity. Places of worship can have 50 per cent capacity. Funerals can take place with a limit of 25 people if outside, and 15 people in closed spaces.

Phase 3 Forward to freedom
FROM Monday, some 25 million people moved into Phase 3 of Spain’s de-escalation from the State of Alarm. The areas that advanced to Phase 3 are: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarre, Aragon, Extremadura, Andalucia, Murcia, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands. The autonomous communities have now been given the power to decide how long this period of de-escalation should last and when State of Alarm ends. In Phase 3, restaurant and bar terraces, which were currently limited to 50 per cent of their capacity, will be able to open up to 75 per cent of capacity. The common areas of the shopping centres may reopen, although with a capacity limit. Socially, in Phase 3 the capacity is increased in social celebrations such as weddings and funerals and there may be up to 150 guests in open spaces and 75 indoors. The wake may have up to 50 attendees outdoors and 25 indoors. And the churches, up to 75 per cent capacity. Nightclubs can now open with a third of their capacity, except in Andalucia. However, there will be no dancing as social distancing measures will still apply. Casinos and gambling halls can also open, with a maximum of 50 per cent of capacity. At this point in time, only those living in Andalucia can travel between provinces. Each autonomous community will also control measures around the reopening of beaches.

IN a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and heads of the autonomous regions and cities, he confirmed the availability of €16 billion to help face the fallout from the coron avirus, Covid19 pandemic. The split will be €9 billion for health, €2 billion for education and €5 billion to assist local economic recovery, al though how much each region is to re ceive has not yet been revealed. It is expected that the money will be distributed between July and December of this year.

Home workers protected IN the new Spain, a huge num ber of workers will continue to be encouraged to work from home, but the government recognises that it will have to in troduce working regulations to ensure no diminution of employ ment rights. For this reason, the Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz has confirmed that her department will be closely examining the situation in order to ensure that those who volun teer to work from home are not discriminated against.
She intends to ensure that there is no loss of income or any rights that they would have ex pected if working in an office or similar location this means no removal of the rights to claim expenses (if they previously ex isted), continued rights to pro motion and professional training and the ability to belong to a trade union or similar organisa tion to represent the individual. There will be a section which deals with working hours and the rights to enjoy rest periods during the day and employers
will need to take into account the individual’s mental health, especially if there is an apparent feeling of isolation. The employer may well benefit from a reduction in costs of hous ing its employees and should see less ‘sick days’ whilst the employ ee should be able to spend more time with the family as commut ing time will be drastically cut and should save travel costs. The downside is that a general time spirit amongst workers may be lost as they no longer physi cally meet and interact.

Who pays for terrace? Are community terraces the whole responsibility of the community? The terraces, according to the original builder, are the responsibility of the commu nity, but several of the houses have a shared terrace and other properties have their own small terrace area. I be lieve the community is only responsible for the tiled roof area, but not the terrace walls. Several of the owners have paid for maintenance of the terrace area out of their own pockets, but other owners claim the community should pay. T H (Costa Blanca) The rule is this: Any thing outside the YOU AND THE LAW walls of the structure IN SPAIN belongs to the com munity. In an apartment building this means the terraces and balconies. In a row of townhouses it means the terraces or in dividual garden areas. This is why an owner must ask the com munity to vote permission to glass in his balcony. He is granted exclusive use of the space, but he does not own it. Who should pay for upkeep? The most usual practice is for the individual owners to pay for upkeep as they have exclusive use of the space. Discuss it at the AGM.

High street closures FOR years Britain’s high streets saw the arrival of numerous corporate chain eateries which were popular for a while, but started to fall out of fashion with the demise of such names as Carluccio’s and Jamie Oliv er’s. Digital banking EXPECT to see a surge in the number of Spaniards who turn to digital banking during 2020 as they have become used to keeping away from bank branches due to their inaccessibility during the lockdown and the ongoing closure of branches.
Safer cars GESTAMP which has plants in Spain, Germany, France and Sweden has secured a €200 million loan from the European Investment Bank in order to allow it to continue research into how to make car bodies lighter and generally safer.

Blaming a racist virus
WHAT these rioter/protester mobs don’t understand, is that every screaming disruption and malicious destruction of public property gains thousands of more votes for Donald Trump! Although the turn out for these demonstrations appears to be extensive, they are a mere fraction of the overall population, most of whom totally abhor this type of mob action; particularly when it is emerging that many are allegedly being financed by billionaire George Soros, as part of his supposed intention to bring anarchy to the USA! Trump’s appearance holding a bible and posing for an impromptu photo call outside the St John’s church was a brilliant PR exercise. To the bible belt and all those convinced that ‘God is on their side,’ plus his statement that he was the ‘President of law and order’ and was prepared to bring in troops to restore this order, would have won him millions of supporters, and to my mind absolutely guaranteed another Whitehouse term. And what are these so called protesters chanting about anyway. Justice? Well just a minute, hasn’t the perpetrator in this case been arrested for murder and three

While we’re about it, what about all the black populace who have committed horrendous murders of white victims? What about the black man Kori Ali Mohamad, who admitted killing four people, as recently as March of this year, simply ‘because they were white’? How easily we
forget the vicious murders of two innocent white people carried out by OJ Simpson, who was initially found not guilty by a jury comprised mainly of black elderly women in what was considered one of the worst miscarriages of justice in recent history. It took a civil unbiased court to subsequently find him guilty, but at no time did we witness hordes of white protesters screaming, looting and baying for blood.
No, I’m afraid that to me racism is a twoway street and those who scream racism the loudest are in fact often the biggest racists of all. It has also recently been established that more ethnic minorities and black people are dying of the Corona disease than white. What hasn’t been made clear is why? We have just witnessed large gatherings of mainly black and ethnic people, completely ignoring the government’s directives in social distancing; in the same way as I reported nearly two months ago, when I observed that even then advice was being ignored by the ethnic communities. Many mosques remained open and some Imams were even telling their followers that it wasn’t their problem and was in fact ‘the wrath of Allah on the infidels’! At the time I wrote that in a few weeks, when they began dropping like flies, they would probably be blaming the indigenous population or the government for their problems. What the World Needs Now... Love GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN a world currently dominated by change, it suddenly feels that we are being forced to realise, what we should have already known. While Coronavirus hit us as something of a ‘delayed surprise,’ the deeply saddening death of George Floyd, is the reality check the world needed, in order to make a united stand against racism and bigotry. The horrific scene, showing the final moments of this poor man’s life, remains deep within our minds and hearts. Watching the news, and the global mixed emotions, leave me stunned. So many people peacefully making a statement, so loud, that even the most hideous racist can hear. Of course there are those who choose to use any situation as an excuse to cause damage. But for now, I concentrate on peace, and hopefully, major positive changes. As for those, who use times like these as an excuse for their criminal behaviour, well, I simply don’t have the mind space. Marbella continues to reopen slowly, and I must say, it has confirmed my suspicion - Spanish people are fantastic. My childhood memories of Ibiza, Marbella and Sotogrande, are filled with smiles. For me, Spain has always been a place driven by its people. Since making it my home last year, I can honestly say, that people are kind, cool, and caring. Of course, there are many who will claim I live through ‘rosé tinted’ glasses, but I feel very welcome in Marbella. A place where people of all nationalities blend together. The glue, being the ever gracious, and smiling Spanish. A nation that manages to be kind, while at the same time passionate. Now, there’s a combination! Routine continues - I still rise early, and run on the beach. Each morning I see more and more people picking rubbish from the sea. Again, as if suddenly, we notice the washed up plastic on the shore. After months of lockdown, our eyes finally open. Last year, I met a group of Swedes, who introduced me to Plogging - picking up plastic as you jog. Bottom line; want to get fit and help the planet? Go plogging. The chiringuitos are alive with the sound of laughter as the sun sets, and it feels like the staff are extra happy to be back.
GROCERY SHOPPING: Is now ‘my thing.’ On Thursday, I had to go grocery shopping, and I made excuses to delay the chore. Strange, as something that used to excite me during lockdown, has somehow become ‘my thing.’ As if somehow, I’ve made it my errand. Anyhow, I hopped into the golf buggy and headed across the motorway to Supersol in El Rosario. I have the art of shopping down. What used to take almost an hour is now achieved within 10 minutes. I left the store to find that the buggy wouldn’t restart. It hadn’t been fully charged before departure. I sat staring at the shopping bags, hoping the Häagen-Dazs wouldn’t melt, when out of nowhere, a Spanish guy approached and asked if I needed help. He explained that he was a gardener and uses golf buggies every day. I wasn’t aware that there’s a built-in jumpstart kit. He knew what to do, and within minutes I was eating the ice cream on Playa Los Monteros. That’s just it, a total stranger, offering help to a total stranger. For no other reason than kindness. While I come from the ‘land of a thousand welcomes,’ I can say that I feel Spain to be one of the most welcoming places I have lived. And while summer 2020 may be slow starter, something tells me it’s going to be fantastic. When you open your eyes, try to see the good in people. Try to always do good for others. See beyond skin colours, sexuality, class. Open your heart, along with your eyes, and trust me, any little things that bug you about the human race, will soon seem pointless. I dedicate this column to anyone who feels they are in the minority. Remember we are not alone. Together love conquers all.

In my opinion, the Chiefs of Police in both the Local Police and Guardia Civil are to be congratulated on the way both forces are carrying out their duties: firm, but friendly, from my limited observations. Lastly, the residents of Águilas, who I also observed fleetingly. They appeared to be acting very responsibly and positively, to the lockdown and are to be commended for this. Clear and sensible Dear Euro Weekly News, I am a British expat who has lived in Spain for many years. During the Coronavirus pandemic, I have been very impressed by the Spanish government’s reaction and lockdown rules that have been employed and the clear and sensible relaxations that are being made now as and when safe to do so. The Spanish residents have all acted in a sensible and law-abiding way too.

AS many people have started to return to their workplaces whilst coronavirus isolation eases off, we must ask are these companies ready? Yes, there are to be new health and sanitary measures put into place to save the spread of any virus but surely there will need to be help in place for the effects on employees’ mental health. Whether it be from being stuck in the house with minimal or no contact with others to loss of family members, having suffered from the virus themselves, to facing a new, changed world and even just the pressure of getting stuck back into projects and actual work. Some may fear the return to normal they have been hoping for. In the two months, they have been out of a work environment people have learned to use their time in different ways, taken up activities that they may not have time for when they return to work, gained new skills or found some kind of peace. These may be things that they will be reluctant to let go of or struggle to continue with. People may now have realised that they can live a life without five coffees at Pret a Manger every day or wardrobes full of clothes. This new normal could now allow people to prioritise lifestyle and well-being over work. Companies should be ready for this, will they meet their employees halfway to ease them back into their role? Will they nurture and value them more in an understanding that we have all been through this together. We must remember that everyone from interns, office staff, managers and CEOs have had to deal with fear and create a new life that is comfortable. Let’s hope with that joint experience comes a mutual respect.

Thanks for action. Contrast this to the shambolic way that Boris Johnson and the British government have reacted and it makes me truly ashamed to be British. The British government is going against a lot of the scientific advice that is being given at the moment and are relaxing the lockdown regulations while the infection and death rate is still too high. There are also a large number of people ignoring the social distancing rules and regulations and it is like a ticking time bomb just waiting to explode into a new and deadly spike of infections. The most worrying point at the moment is if Spain goes ahead as planned to open up to tourism, will there be checks in place on all those coming into the country especially from places like the UK? Will the tourists be policed in the strict manner needed? Tourism is very important to the Spanish economy, I just hope that the resumption is done slowly and carefully so that the country doesn’t get a second spike in infections causing unnecessary pain, death and suffering. Leftie, rightie, Leapy Dear Leapy Lee Why do you call anyone who dares to criticise the current Tory government a ‘leftie’? Surely, in a democracy, anyone has the right, whatever their political leanings, to criticise their government if they feel it has made mistakes. In the current Coronavirus crisis the UK government has left a lot to be desired in their response, yet you are prepared to excuse them by saying they have found themselves in an unprecedented situation, but it is an unprecedented situation for ALL governments of the world and many have tackled it much better. Also, in the light of the Dominic Cummings debacle, more than 50 of the prime minister’s own MPs have criticised his response not to mention thousands of others. Are these all ‘lefties’? Obviously not. Come on Leapy Lee, look at the wider picture and be prepared to snap out of your blinkered right-wing views. Maybe, one day, it might dawn on you that Boris Johnson is totally out of his depth and is a shoddy excuse for a prime minister who tells blatant lies just like his counterpart in America. COMMENTS FROM FACEBOOK The Spanish Government to Announce New Regulations if a Coronavirus Vaccine is not Available How are they going to include the testing as law? There is a human rights law that prevents you from being made to have a treatment that you do not want. And you cannot be discriminated against for that choice. If we are now being told to have a test or we will be discriminated against, it is against Article 6, section 1, of the UNESCO 2005 statement of Bioethics and Human rights. Paul Ash it doesn’t yet. It does say... ‘Among them, all the suspected cases of Covid-19 are obliged to carry out PCR or derived tests.’ That is medical treatment which you can choose not to have and should not be discriminated against if you decide not to have it based on the fact it is not accurate. If the person who won the Nobel prize for inventing RT/PCR testing, Karey Banks Mullis, has himself said that you are not to use the PCR test for diagnosis as it is 81 per cent false positive and cannot differentiate between any of the seven human corona virus ailments, why should it be compulsory to be used and made to be mandatory in the ‘new normal’?

Whatever became of Uri Geller?
I’VE lost count of the number of times that I’ve drained the kitchen sink after a washing up session, only to discover a teaspoon languishing at the bottom. This annoys the hell out of me, but when it happened this week I noticed the spoon was bent almost in half. The thought briefly entered my mind that the ghost of Uri Geller, a man who became a multi-millionaire by convincing people that he could bend spoons and other metal objects with supernatural powers, had wafted into our apartment. This I instantly dismissed because I don’t believe in ghosts - and Geller isn’t dead. But he’s not been much in the news ever since he was exposed as a charlatan as far back as the 70s. The last time I wrote about Geller was in 2012 when I penned a piece about Geller’s appearance as a guest on Talk Radio Europe. The station touted him as ‘a famous psychic and paranormalist’ - a claim that left me fizzing with fury because the re-

BENT SPOON: Is 19 metres long. searchers had clearly done no digging whatsoever into Geller’s background. Had they done so they would have learned that Geller himself dropped claims to such powers years ago. In the November 2007 issue of the magazine Magische Welt (Magic World)
Geller stated: “I’ll no longer say that I have supernatural powers. I am an e n t e r t a i n e r. I w a n t t o d o a g o o d show. My entire character has changed.” It had to change. Geller launched several lawsuits against people who said he was a fraud, and lost them all.
The man who succeeded best in exposing Geller was Canadian magician and gay atheist James Randi. Geller responded by unsuccessfully suing Randi for $15 million. Believing his life would soon end, having been diagnosed with cancer in 2009, Randi said: ‘I want to be cremated, and I want my ashes blown in Uri Geller’s eyes.’ Mercifully he recovered and, at 91, has a clean bill of health. So what is Geller doing now? Well, the 74-year-old has established the Uri Geller Museum in Israel. Due to open in August it has outside its entrance the world’s largest spoon, almost 19 metres long. The interior features - be still my beating heart! - his 1963 Vespa, and sculptures by Salvador Dali. There are also items from David Bowie, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Picasso, and Andy Warhol. You don’t need to be psychic to deduce that it also contains bent spoons - thousands of the things. I would have sent him the one I found in the sink, but I bent it back into shape - without resorting to paranormal methods.

WITH many of us having being stuck behind closed doors for a while and sports equipment shops and gyms closed we need to find a way of getting summer body fit. There are many household items you already have that you can use as makeshift weights or exercise aids. How about filling two water bottles the same size with sand from the beach, pebbles or plain old dirt. The weight will then allow them to be used as dumbells
THE global health crisis has given everybody a little extra stress due to not spending time at work, relationship issues or being cooped up with your family all day. It can become too
so you can crack on with sculpting your guns. A towel or t-shirt can be used as a resistance band if tied in a loop allowing it to be used for your arm and leg workouts. Get climbing those stairs for some cardio or to feel the burn add some food cans to a backpack whilst you do it. If you have a rope long enough you should get skipping for a full-body workout.
Sleep tight much, so it’s possible your sleep may suffer. Anxiety from thinking
you can’t sleep can make things worse. Free your mind and the rest will follow. Try keeping a notebook to write down things you’re worrying about. An overheated body can be disruptive to your sleep. Wear light cottons and make sure your bedroom is kept cool and dark through the night. Physical comfort is critical for sleep, so invest in a decent mattress. Almost half of our life is spent in bed, so it’s worth investing in one that gives the right support and prevents back pain. Eating and drinking before bed can affect sleep. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and sugar and opt for a glass of warm milk or a cup of chamomile tea to induce sleep.
FOR someone looking in from the outside I can only imagine how confusing it must be to understand someone who has Bipolar. If you have a friend or family member living with bipolar disorder, this person may be afraid to share how they really feel. During these emotional highs known as mania - I may become full of energy and overly excited about everything and anything! Sometimes, all you see is a fun, optimistic, and bubbly person - the life of the party. But other times, you may notice erratic and strange behaviours with their joyful mood. I become more talkative, to the point where others can’t get a word in. I also speak fast, or come off as impulsive and easily distracted. I tend to be quite repetitive, telling you the same story a million times! When I’m in a depressive episode, I want to be left alone - but then get lonely and think everyone is avoiding me! I don’t want to go anywhere, see anyone, or do anything. It’s like no matter what I do, I’m doing something wrong. So, the easiest way to feel better is to hide. Seeing everyone carrying on, living their happy little lives is an annoying reminder of my bipolar disorder and how I’ll never have that kind of stability. No matter what it is - I don’t enjoy things because the smallest details annoy me. If friends invite me out, I imagine waiting for the bus, being crammed against people, crowded bars, and all the other negative things. I think of every possible downside of something, which leaves me dreading the idea of doing anything. I analyse every possible worse case scenario. I turn into this grumpy overly obsessive lady!
During these episodes when I think about the future, I don’t like what I see. I can only see more troubles, endless work to keep well, and an endless string of letdowns and failed relationships. But there is also a place inbetween - the middle - between the mania and the depressions there is a small breathing space, I get to catch my breath back, and build up enough energy to roll out the punches the average day gives me! It never lasts for long, so I make the most of it and enjoy it whilst it lasts … I’m not freaking out over small problems, I enjoy the little things, and I’m not loathing the future. I feel normal (my kind of normal!) and it’s how I see myself. I’m not some lunatic running around or some long face lazy slug! I honestly wish I could stay in this mindset all the time, but I know that won’t happen. I’ve accepted that my moods will change on their own. But the most important thing of all is DON’T GIVE UP ON US … We need your guiding light to keep going, keep believing in us. I feel better now it’s off my chest MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man THANKS for the emails about my little stories from my youth and I’ll probably do some more, but for this week at least I need to be grumpy again. We have been walking along the paseo each morning. The instructions are very simple and, in fact for absolute clarification, there are arrows painted on the pavement. If you are walking towards Marbella you walk on one side of the street if you are walking towards Malaga you walk on the other side of the street. (Obviously that’s if you live on the Costa del Sol!) So now I have to stop myself saying to people ‘Oi, you are on the wrong side of the street!’ I’ve seen others do it and the responses haven’t been that pleasant. No-one I’ve seen has said ‘oh dear, I’m so sorry.’ I actually think this should be carried on forever. It’s a bit like shopping in Ikea. Another thing is what’s the etiquette of walking now? If you are walking down a non-one way pavement with your dog
and someone is walking towards you with or without a dog who crosses over or goes into the road? It’s easy when you are driving. If the obstruction is on your side of the road you hold back till the car passes ... or at least you should. But there is no guidance about the pavement situation. Is it a sign of weakness to cross over or is it politeness or is it a game of social distancing chicken to see who caves in first? OK - mask wearing. Wear it or don’t. There’s no point in walking along with it on your chin or dangling from your ear! I have to admit I’m a chin wearer sometimes but have now decided I can’t go out for my walk with a mask on. I wear it round my wrist ready for when I stop. I only really wear one if I’m in a store. Oh and by the way in case nobody has realised it yet, it doesn’t matter how much the locals support their restaurants, bars and cafes, they cannot exist without tourism. Until that starts again this coast is economically in a stranglehold. I went to a local deli yesterday and in the parade were six eateries. Four of them had ‘se vende’ signs in the window and were closed. And that feels better having got all that off my chest!
