NEW STAGE: Face masks look to play a major part in the new normality.

SO, it looks like we should get used to wearing face masks, as just as they are obligatory to wear in Spain during the current State of Alarm measures, they look to play a major part in the forthcoming ‘new normality.’ The Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday June 9 the decree of measures for the new normality. In principle, this period will last until there is a vaccine or an effective treatment against Covid-19. Face masks will be mandatory and fines for failing to comply will be up to €100. The

communities must be prepared for another o u t b r e a k . H o w e v e r, there will be no movement restriction or limit of people who can meet. Health Minister Salvador Illa has repeated that residents must “lear n to live with the virus.” This new stage will begin when the State of Alarm ends on June 21. The control of the Covid-19 will rest, in this new normality, on prevention. “Individual responsibility will be key,” said Salvador Illa. Hence rules stated by Illa live on TV such as the use of face masks

when it is not possible to maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres with other people in public or private places and the repetitive insistence to take care of “hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette” in addition to “common sense,” which is regularly reiterated by the director of the Centro de Emergencias Sanitaria, Fernando Simón.

Even without restrictions on mobility, those responsible for public transport must take measures to avoid crowds of passengers. Operators will have to keep the passenger r e c o rd f o r f o u r w e e k s when they have an assigned seat for possible contagion traces. In workplaces, it will have to be ensured that the distance be-

tween workers can be kept to 1.5 metres and accesses organised so that there are no concentrations when entering or leaving.

Motril’s Dog Beach THE dog friendly beach in Motril’s Playa El Cable has been temporarily shut down as part of authority recommendations which limits the access of pets in bathing areas which is a preventative measure which falls under the Covid-19 restrictions. The new rules establish the prohibition of dogs, or any other types of animals, accessing and staying on the beach and the entire coastline, including bathing areas. The only exception to this rule is for guide dogs. This restriction is even applied to the dog beach and will be enforced for as long as necessary due to the health crisis. Jose Lemos, the deputy mayor for Tourism, has announced that this decision has been taken in order to “prioritise the health of visitors and residents” and to ensure the largest capacity on the Motril beaches, which must always respect the two-metre safety distances.

Festival Postponed

WEEKEND BEACH FESTIVAL: Torre del Mar music event postponed until 2021. THE Weekend Beach Festival in Spain’s Torre del Mar has released a statement letting fans and customers know that the music event has been postponed to June 30 July 2 of 2021. The festival has had to postpone its event due to the unexpected health crisis caused by the coro-

navirus pandemic. All tickets will remain valid; however, refunds may also be requested up to two weeks after June 6. The promoters have promised to ensure that they will not let down any punters and the entire lineup, minus Paulo Londra, will be featured again next year along-

side some new additions. The organisation would like to remind residents that the festival is an important economic contributor and employer in the region. Last year the festival accommodated 150,000 people, brought in more than €8 million and created more than 1,000 jobs.

Nerja’s Cave MALAGA’S famous tourist attraction, the caves of Nerja, is now open for individuals to come and witness its beauty and splendour. The capacity has been limited and entrance will be stagnated amongst families, with a five-metre distance between groups. The facility will use a state-of-theart camera which measures visitor’s temperatures before entering the caves in order to discard entry from anyone with a fever. Furthermore, they have installed hydro-alcoholic gel points and gloves as well as floor markings to encourage social distancing. The cave was inaugurated on June 12 in 1960, which means it is quickly approaching its 60th birthday. Opening hours are from 10.00am to 4.00pm but these will be extended to 7.00pm after June 23.

TOURIST ATTRACTION: Open again to the public.

Free Wifi THE Plaza de la Constitución, the Paseo del Altillo in Almuñecar, and the Plaza de la Independecia in La Herradura are the three public spaces in the municipality that already have free Wi-Fi, thanks to the new EUfunded programme called WiFi4EU. To use the service, residents connect to an open wireless network called ‘WiFi4EU,’ and then a portal will appear on their mobile device (tablet, mobile or laptop). “To access the internet for a limited time but free of cost, the user must first register. The connection time per user will be 12 hours,” explained Rafael Caballero Jiménez. Almuñecar was one of the 510 Spanish municipalities to have Wi-Fi financed by the EU with an amount of €15,000.

Beach Supervisors

IMPORTANT WORK: The beaches are to be patrolled. BEACH supervisors in Rincon de la Victoria have begun to patrol the beaches in order to ensure all residents are complying with the safety measures enacted as a result of the Covid-19 health crisis. This service will be carried out with a total of 10 supervisors who are distributed along the beaches of the municipality. The team also has a coordinator who is in direct contact with the town hall.

Their working hours will be from 12.00pm to 8.00pm from June 5 to July 5 and they will work daily from Monday to Sunday. The beach councillors have informed them of the “important work that they must carry out,” as their objective is to “inform and raise awareness amongst the population” about complying “with the regulations to minimise the risk of transmission in the beach and maritime areas.”

Axarquia Hospital THE Axarquia Hospital now boasts a portable radiology machine, an important donation from Endesa, to help in their fight against the Covid-19 crisis. This donation is part of the electric utility company’s pledge to help the nation fight against the coronavirus crisis. This initiative has provided services, equip-

ment, and infrastructure to hospitals across Spain including the Ronda Hospital in Malaga. This high-resolution equipment uses internal batteries and can therefore be mobilised with ease, which makes it especially useful in emergency situations when patients cannot be transferred to the radiology room.

New Equipment THE mayor of Velez-Malaga’s town hall and councillor of Security have delivered new work equipment to the Local Police force for summer. This new equipment has been provided to adapt to the summer season and new hygienic-sanitary protocols at work. The shipment includes 100 pairs of summer trousers, 241 short-sleeved polo shirts, and 33 helmets, alongside protective material, allowing them to do their jobs with the maximum security guarantees.

Cancelled Ferias VELEZ-MALAGA’S town hall has taken on the recommendations from Spain’s central government and decided to cancel all ferias and Romerias this year. The General Directorate of Public Health and the Junta de Andalucia have recommended that municipalities cancel their summer celebrations as they may pose a threat to the safety of residents due to the coronavirus crisis. The mayor, Antonio Moreno Ferrer, has announced that in order to guarantee citizen security and avoid uncontrollable crowds, Velez-Malaga will not host any ferias or Romerias. The municipality assures that responsibility and prevention are essential tools to avoid possible outbreaks of the virus.

More specifically this encompasses walking and bathing along the streams of the river Chillar which goes towards Los Cahorros. Fresh, untreated water is considered to be high risk for transmitting coronavirus therefore this is prohibited.

Together with other Axarquia mayors, Moreno Ferrer took part in a recent Zoom meeting with the provincial council’s president, Francisco Salado. The Velez mayor said afterwards that he hoped the new ruling came into effect without delay to benefit the local population, particularly regard-

Moreno asked the Diputacion to send the necessary documents and instructions to town hall auditors so that each municipality received their allocations as soon as possible. Fatal Explosion Water Park opens

The Aquavelis water park in Torre del Mar, Velez-Malaga, has opted for a slightly later opening date which is Saturday, July 4.

Criminal Gang GUARDIA CIVIL in Malaga have arrested a criminal group who specialised in robbing houses and establishments across the province. Police have arrested 10 people who were allegedly involved in at least 19 assaults across various homes, bars, and restaurants in Axarquia. Operation ‘Rutero’ lasted several months and concluded that the criminals, who illegally occupied houses in Alcaucin, used their own vehicles to commit various thefts, however, they also rented vans when stealing larger objects. Their theft was varied and included items such as: home appliances, tools and decorative furniture. They stored the items in the squatter houses and used the black market to sell them. Sometimes they kept the stolen valuables to decorate their home.

VARIOUS ARRESTS: Operation ‘Rutero’ lasted several months. One of the robberies this group committed was when a member posed as police in order to access a home, however, they were not credible enough and had to escape by jumping over a high wall which caused an injury to his leg.

18,000 Kilos NATIONAL POLICE in Axarquia have conducted operation Guerrero with success, a large drug bust resulting in over 18,000 plants being seized. The plantation was in the municipality of Velez-Malaga, more specifically crops were spread across five greenhouses in Cajiz. National Police have arrested six individuals, four of which are family members, for the crimes of drug trafficking and pertaining to a criminal gang. If distributed across Europe the street value of these plants could equate to around €43,399,400 if three harvests were sold each year.

Library Hours New Digital Advancements ALMUEÑECAR’S Jesus Serrano library has extended its opening hours and customer service times in accordance with the beginning of Phase 3 in Granada. The opening hours are now 9.00am to 2.00pm and 5.00pm to 9.00pm from Monday to Friday. They will also open on Saturday mornings from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Crossing the straits Brutal ANDALUCIA President Juanma Moreno has raised concerns about allowing this year’s so-called ‘Crossing the Straits’ operation, when North Africans living in Spain and elsewhere in Europe go through Spanish ports to get back home for the summer holidays. POLICE in Barcelona have arrested five men after a brutal street robbery in broad daylight. The event took place at 5.45pm on Sunday, June 8, in the city’s Rambla del Raval, when five Moroccan males surrounded and assaulted a passer-by to steal his watch. The victim tried to escape as his attackers can be seen throwing punches at him and pulling him around, causing some of them to fall to the ground. The group of assailants all fled moments later. Mossos d’Esquadra officers who were in the area reportedly witnessed the event and, with the help of other patrols, managed to catch the five suspects and arrest them.

Beyond duty SHOPLIFTER: Was only trying to feed his family. A POLICE officer paid for a ‘shoplifter’s’ baby food after hearing his financial troubles due to the crisis. Rather than arresting a 35-year-old father who tried to steal four jars of baby food, the policeman paid for the goods and told him to go home. The man was captured on supermarket CCTV cameras in Zarragoza entering the store and going to the baby food aisle, where he was seen putting the items in his pocket and looking nervous. As is normal procedure, the police were called.

But as the man explained he is a father who is out of work at the moment, times are hard and he is struggling to feed his family, fellow shoppers took out their purses and offered to pay for the items. A National Police team arrived and spoke to staff, shoppers and the suspect before telling him "to leave, that there is nothing against him." As the wouldbe shoplifter was leaving the store, one of the officers reportedly paid for the jars of baby food, valued at around €8, and gave them to him.

Knife attack A 36-YEAR-OLD Bolivian w o m a n i s u n d e r a r re s t o n suspicion of killing her ex in a violent knife attack in Madrid. Guardia Civil reportedly detained the woman after she contacted the emergency services in the early hours of June 6 to report her 47-year-old former partner, also Bolivian, had stabbed himself in the ribs in an establishment in the Villa del Prado neighbour hood of the city. According to Spanish press, the woman contradicted herself during the course of the call while explaining what supposedly happened, raising the Guardia’s suspicions about her version of the events. Plasma trials By Damon Mitchell EURO WEEKLY NEWS spoke exclusively with London based Eleisha Rae Kennedy who is currently working with NHS Blood and Transplant. Up until the beginning of the Coronavirus health crisis, Eleisha was working as a tour guide showing tourists around London and places like the British Museum. However, she began to feel ill and decided to selfisolate. Luckily for her, her symptoms passed within around a week. “At that point, tour operators had ceased business due to lack of custom and I found out that the NHS was looking for volunteers for the Nightingale project, so I applied. “When Nightingale hospitals called me back they dis-

cussed a position with NHS Blood and Transplant, which I was very happy to take on,” said Eleisha. “They were creating a trial where we would take convalescent plasma from people who had had the Covid infection and had recovered in the hope that the subject may have higher antibody levels that may fight the virus,” she explained and went on to say that “Donors were able to give plasma through a transfusion 28 days after their symptoms had passed. Also, donors were either contacted by the government or had registered for the trial.” Eleisha also spoke of some situations during assessment where there were not enough antibodies and also that not many women can donate as criteria state the donor must weigh more than 70 kilos and be of a certain

IN a virtual meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and heads of the autonomous regions and cities, he confirmed the availability of €16 billion to help face the fallout from the coron­ avirus, Covid­19 pandemic. The split will be €9 billion for health, €2 billion for education and €5 billion to assist local economic recovery, al­ though how much each region is to re­ ceive has not yet been revealed. Home workers protected IN the new Spain, a huge num­ ber of workers will continue to be encouraged to work from home, but the government recognises that it will have to in­ troduce working regulations to ensure no diminution of employ­ ment rights. For this reason, the Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz has confirmed that her department will be closely examining the situation in order to ensure that those who volun­ teer to work from home are not discriminated against.

She intends to ensure that there is no loss of income or any rights that they would have ex­ pected if working in an office or similar location ­ this means no removal of the rights to claim expenses (if they previously ex­ isted), continued rights to pro­ motion and professional training and the ability to belong to a trade union or similar organisa­ tion to represent the individual. There will be a section which deals with working hours and the rights to enjoy rest periods during the day and employers

will need to take into account the individual’s mental health, especially if there is an apparent feeling of isolation. The employer may well benefit from a reduction in costs of hous­ ing its employees and should see less ‘sick days’ whilst the employ­ ee should be able to spend more time with the family as commut­ ing time will be drastically cut and should save travel costs. The downside is that a general time spirit amongst workers may be lost as they no longer physi­ cally meet and interact.

Who pays for terrace? Are community terraces the whole responsibility of the community? The terraces, according to the original builder, are the responsibility of the commu­ nity, but several of the houses have a shared terrace and other properties have their own small terrace area. I be­ lieve the community is only responsible for the tiled roof area, but not the terrace walls. Several of the owners have paid for maintenance of the terrace area out of their own pockets, but other owners claim the community should pay. In a row of townhouses it means the terraces or in­ dividual garden areas. This is why an owner must ask the com­ munity to vote permission to glass in his balcony. He is granted exclusive use of the space, but he does not own it. Who should pay for upkeep? Phase 2 MOVIN

WHILST the majority of Spain has already moved to Phase 3, others like Madrid and Barcelona moved to Phase 2 on Monday and both the north and south of Costa Blanca have chosen to remain in Phase 2. In Phase 2, restaurants and bars can now reopen their interior dining areas provided capacity is limited to 40 per cent. Terraces will continue at 50 per cent of capacity. Up to 15 people can now meet for social gatherings but social distancing measures should still be respected between those who don’t live together. Residents are allowed to move freely within their province, including to their second homes. Shops and stores can open independently of their size, but with capacity limited to 40 per cent. Open-air markets are allowed with a third of normal stands. Hotels and tourist accommodations can reopen their common areas, provided capacity is kept to 30 per cent. Cinemas, theatres, auditoriums and culture venues can reopen, with capacity limited to 30 per cent. Shopping centres can open with capacity limited to 40 per cent within shops and 30 per cent in communal areas. Casinos can open at 50 per cent capacity. Open-air concerts are allowed, but the public must be seated, observing social distancing, with capacity at 30 per cent and limited to 400 people. Swimming pools can open at 30 per cent capacity. Places of worship can have 50 per cent capacity. Funerals can take place with a limit of 25 people if outside, and 15 people in closed spaces.

Phase 3 Forward to freedom

FROM Monday, some 25 million people moved into Phase 3 of Spain’s de-escalation from the State of Alarm. The areas that advanced to Phase 3 are: Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, La Rioja, Navarre, Aragon, Extremadura, Andalucia, Murcia, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands. The autonomous communities have now been given the power to decide how long this period of de-escalation should last and when State of Alarm ends. In Phase 3, restaurant and bar terraces, which were currently limited to 50 per cent of their capacity, will be able to open up to 75 per cent of capacity. The common areas of the shopping centres may reopen, although with a capacity limit. Socially, in Phase 3 the capacity is increased in social celebrations such as weddings and funerals and there may be up to 150 guests in open spaces and 75 indoors. The wake may have up to 50 attendees outdoors and 25 indoors. And the churches, up to 75 per cent capacity. Nightclubs can now open with a third of their capacity, except in Andalucia and the Balearic Islands. However, there will be no dancing as social distancing measures will still apply. Casinos and gambling halls can also open, with a maximum of 50 per cent of capacity. At this point in time, only those living in Andalucia can travel between provinces. Each autonomous community will also control measures around the reopening of beaches.

Blaming a racist virus

MOBS PROTESTING: Including the malicious destruction of public property.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT WHAT these rioter/ protester mobs don’t understand, is that every screaming disruption and malicious destruction of public property gains thousands of more votes for Donald Trump! Although the turn out for these demonstrations appears to be extensive, they are a mere fraction of the overall population, most of whom totally abhor this type of mob action; particularly when it is emerging that many are allegedly being financed by billionaire George Soros, as part of his supposed intention to bring anarchy to the USA! Trump’s appearance holding a bible and posing for an impromptu photo call outside the St John’s church was a brilliant PR exercise. To the bible belt and all those convinced that ‘God is on their side,’ plus his statement that he was the ‘President of law and order’ and was prepared to bring in troops to restore this order, would have won him millions of supporters, and to my mind

absolutely guaranteed another Whitehouse term. And what are these so called protesters chanting about anyway. Justice? Well just a minute, hasn’t the perpetrator in this case been arrested for murder and three other police officers also accused of aiding and abetting? What sort of ‘justice’ do these people want - a public lynching? While we’re about it, what about all the black populace who have committed horrendous murders of white victims? What about the black man Kori Ali Mohamad, who admitted killing four people, as recently as March of this year, simply ‘because they were white’? How easily we forget the vicious murders of two innocent white people carried out by OJ Simpson, who was initially found not guilty by a jury comprised mainly of black elderly women in what was considered one of the worst miscarriages of justice in recent history. It took a civil unbiased court to subsequently find him guilty, but at no time did we witness hordes of white protesters screaming, looting and baying for blood. No, I’m afraid that

to me racism is a two- way street and those who scream racism the loudest are in fact often the biggest racists of all. It has also recently been established that more ethnic minorities and black people are dying of the Corona disease than white. What hasn’t been made clear is why? We have just witnessed large gatherings of mainly black and ethnic people, completely ignoring the government’s directives in social distancing; in the same way as I reported nearly two months ago, when I observed that even then advice was being ignored by the ethnic communities. Many mosques remained open and some Imams were even telling their followers that it wasn’t their problem and was in fact ‘the wrath of Allah on the infidels’! At the time I wrote that in a few weeks, when they began dropping like flies, they would probably be blaming the indigenous population or the government for their problems. I am also interested in the causes of thousands of deaths and the resulting responses. For those of us not uncomfortable with the word ‘God,’ it could be a warning from above that we need to bring to a rapid halt the pollution and destruction of our planet; to be more considerate to each other; to desist from animal cruelty, abuse and confinement; to reverse the continuing increase in intolerance, crime and drug abuse; and to strive for greater financial and racial equality for all. Sadly, from the outbreak in late February, apart from a better awareness of the needs of the elderly the poor and the vulnerable,

Rule by Fear

NORMAL LIFE: It may be a while before we get back to normality. there is little evidence that we have learned anything. Is there a connection between the virus and 5G installations

and is it engineered by the richest and most powerful 1 per cent in order to subjugate the rest of us? If so, is this to be achieved through the administration of a compulsory universal vaccine which could subdue the human race into submission?

If that were the case, as hundreds of millions of livelihoods have been disrupted or threatened by lockdown and the global economy is in freefall, only the one percent with wealth and influence would survive. The rest of us would be controlled, not by arms, but by science and technology; confined, not as caged birds, but by lockdown; subjugated, not as the inhabitants of Gaza and North Korea, but by poverty. I am not discounting the real and tragic existence of hundreds of thousands of fatalities and serious illnesses. We have seen the horrific scenes in hospitals and witnessed the suffering of those infected. Almost all of us, however, are ruled by a fear of contamination which is probably grossly exaggerated or even unjustified. I think the complacent

behaviour of Presidents Trump, Bolsonaro and Putin, as well as Boris Johnson, is highly irresponsible. These ‘leaders’ initially told us there was nothing much to worry about, which is clearly untrue, and then, in panic, took belated action based on dubious advice. Their countries are certainly paying a heavy price. While serious measures needed to be implemented, have they been appropriate? To what degree has total lockdown been the right solution? Its result is massive unemployment, loss of livelihood, increased poverty, hunger and disease, mental illness, postponement of medical treatment and universal fear. Although Europe is edging towards a kind of normality, I believe it will be two years before we live our lives as we did in 2019.

The Power of Hope ROBERT SHALLIS ALBERT EINSTEIN once said: ‘Learn from yesterday, live for today, HOPE for tomorrow.’ With the world experiencing so much pain, uncertainty and confusion at present, the word ‘Hope’ once again has been called to duty. But is hope just a word we use half-heartedly when we are trying to hold on to something less negative out of desperation, or can it really make a difference? It’s actually a very powerful thing as it can inspire us, uplift us and help us get through those difficult and challenging times. Sometimes, just holding on to a little hope when everything around us can seem hopeless is not an easy thing to do when so many people prefer to hold on to despair.

POWERFUL WORD: You’ll soon find it to be a much healthier, positive and practical alternative. Hope is magical, it is a positive use of our imagination, the vision of a better outcome and has the ability to turn dreams into reality. Today most of us are hoping for a better world and a brighter future. It’s important that we continue to do so as it can help make each day seem more bearable during such testing times. It gives us the strength to carry on and push forward.

Living without hope isn’t really living, but of course it’s our choice. Optimism or pessimism? We are free to decide. Hope and despair have allies, faith and fear. Faith and fear are interesting as they both require that you believe in something you cannot see. So, hope itself requires an element of faith which is believing in something without evidence.

The substance of faith is hope. We can easily be driven by our fears however, we can also be driven by our hopes and beliefs, which most would agree is a more effective and positive way to live each day. It can sometimes be difficult to change our perspective but if you’re tired of that all too familiar feeling of doom and gloom which can often overwhelm us

especially in today’s current climate, try practising hope. Try focusing on a different ending to the story. Life is an open book, instead of predicting the worst, use the miraculous and amazing strength and power of hope to help change the chapters. So, let’s hold on to that powerful word . Let it become part of you and a way of being. You’ll soon find it to be a much healthier, positive and practical alternative. Simply put, hope is what you would like to happen. What would you like to happen? Don’t lose sight of hope, it is surely a better way to live, it helps you get to where you want to be and creates that shining light at the end what can sometimes seem like a never-ending dark tunnel? La Concha mountain hike LA CONCHA is the highest mountain in the city of Marbella, it sits within the southernmost part of the Sierra Blanca mountain range. There are two main routes leading to La Concha. First is from Istan, and the second being El Regufio De Juanar. The walk is simple; however it is necessary to be prepared, bring water, sunscreen, snacks and a mobile phone. If you do not feel safe going on your own due to lack of experience, hiring a guide is possible, many companies offer to take you up safely. I feel better now it’s off my chest MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man THANKS for the emails about my little stories from my youth and I’ll probably do some more, but for this week at least I need to be grumpy again. We have been walking along the paseo each morning. The instructions are very simple and, in fact for absolute clarification, there are arrows painted on the pavement. If you are walking towards Marbella you walk on one side of the street if you are walking towards Malaga you walk on the other side of the street. (Obviously that’s if you live on the Costa del Sol!) So now I have to stop myself saying to people ‘Oi, you are on the wrong side of the street!’ I’ve seen others do it and the responses haven’t been that pleasant. No-one I’ve seen has said ‘oh dear, I’m so sorry.’ I actually think this should be carried on forever. It’s a bit like shopping in Ikea. Another thing is what’s the etiquette of walking now? If you are walking down a non-one way pavement with your dog

and someone is walking towards you with or without a dog who crosses over or goes into the road? It’s easy when you are driving. If the obstruction is on your side of the road you hold back till the car passes ... or at least you should. But there is no guidance about the pavement situation. Is it a sign of weakness to cross over or is it politeness or is it a game of social distancing chicken to see who caves in first? OK - mask wearing. Wear it or don’t. There’s no point in walking along with it on your chin or dangling from your ear! I have to admit I’m a chin wearer sometimes but have now decided I can’t go out for my walk with a mask on. I wear it round my wrist ready for when I stop. I only really wear one if I’m in a store. Oh and by the way in case nobody has realised it yet, it doesn’t matter how much the locals support their restaurants, bars and cafes, they cannot exist without tourism. Until that starts again this coast is economically in a stranglehold. I went to a local deli yesterday and in the parade were six eateries. Four of them had ‘se vende’ signs in the window and were closed. And that feels better having got all that off my chest!

Welcome to the New Normal

GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY IN a world currently dominated by change, it suddenly feels that we are being forced to realise, what we should have already known. While Coronavirus hit us as something of a ‘delayed surprise,’ the deeply saddening death of George Floyd, is the reality check the world needed, in order to make a united stand against racism and bigotry. The horrific scene, showing the final moments of this poor man’s life, remains deep within our minds and hearts. Watching the news, and the global mixed emotions, leave me stunned. So many people peacefully making a statement, so loud, that even the most hideous racist can hear. Of course there are those who choose to use any situation as an excuse to cause damage. But for now, I concentrate on peace, and hopefully, major positive changes. As for those, who use times like these as an excuse for their criminal behaviour, well, I simply don’t have the mind space. Marbella continues to reopen slowly, and I must say, it has confirmed my suspicion - Spanish people are fantastic. My childhood memories of Ibiza, Marbella and Sotogrande, are filled with smiles. For me, Spain has always been a place driven by its people. Since making it my home last year, I can honestly say, that people are kind, cool, and caring. Of course, there are many who will claim I live through ‘rosé tinted’ glasses, but I feel very welcome in Marbella. A place where people of all nationalities blend together. The glue, being the ever gracious, and smiling Spanish. A nation that manages to be kind, while at the same time passionate. Now, there’s a combination! Routine continues - I still rise early, and run on the beach. Each morning I see more and more people picking rubbish from the sea. Again, as if suddenly, we notice the washed up plastic on the shore. After months of lockdown, our eyes finally open. Last year, I met a group of Swedes, who introduced me to Plogging - picking up plastic as you jog. Bottom line; want to get fit and help the planet? Go plogging. The chiringuitos are alive with the sound of laughter as the sun sets, and it feels like the staff are extra happy to be back.

GROCERY SHOPPING: Is now ‘my thing.’ On Thursday, I had to go grocery shopping, and I made excuses to delay the chore. Strange, as something that used to excite me during lockdown, has somehow become ‘my thing.’ As if somehow, I’ve made it my errand. Anyhow, I hopped into the golf buggy and headed across the motorway to Supersol in El Rosario. I have the art of shopping down. What used to take almost an hour is now achieved within 10 minutes. I left the store to find that the buggy wouldn’t restart. It hadn’t been fully charged before departure. I sat staring at the shopping bags, hoping the Häagen-Dazs wouldn’t melt, when out of nowhere, a Spanish guy approached and asked if I needed help. He explained that he was a gardener and uses golf buggies every day. I wasn’t aware that there’s a built-in jumpstart kit. He knew what to do, and within minutes I was eating the ice cream on Playa Los Monteros. That’s just it, a total stranger, offering help to a total stranger. For no other reason than kindness. While I come from the ‘land of a thousand welcomes,’ I can say that I feel Spain to be one of the most welcoming places I have lived. And while summer 2020 may be slow starter, something tells me it’s going to be fantastic. When you open your eyes, try to see the good in people. Try to always do good for others. See beyond skin colours, sexuality, class. Open your heart, along with your eyes, and trust me, any little things that bug you about the human race, will soon seem pointless. I dedicate this column to anyone who feels they are in the minority. Remember we are not alone. Together love conquers all.

LOCKDOWN is causing mounting tensions in the UK as surveys show people have not only drunk more and gained weight but turned on neighbours flouting restrictions. According to TV broadcaster Kirstie Allsopp, lockdown has turned Brits into a nation of snoopers: “Every day somebody accuses me of something I haven’t done!” The end of lockdown and the ‘new nor mal’ are increasingly visible on the horizon - some pubs are serving takeaway pints, Mr Whippy is being enjoyed on beaches - and Brits may be planning for life outside the work-fromhome bubble, but they won’t be giving up the new national hobby easily: snooping. Occasionally even a little l i g h t d o b b i n g . To t h e council, to the police or on social media.

The problem with ‘lockdown hawks’ is that this type of behaviour strengthens the feelings of those who resent lockdown, while not being at all helpful to the many in the middle who are doing their best, but whose circumstances do not quite match any scenario imagined by either their neighbours or the rule-makers. Maybe too many ‘non-essential’ workers enjoying their furlough holiday have too much time on their hands? With no intellectual pursuits to occupy them, what else is there to do apart from wandering far and wide like robots or spying on their neighbours? H o w e v e r, s p y i n g o n others is far from new in Britain. The Department for Work and Pensions has been receiving innumerable dobbing-in phone calls for decades from people positive they’re better informed of their neighbour’s medical or disabled condition than it is. The net-curtaintwitching phenomenon

seems part of the national character. An ugly part. But it’s not all bad n e w s . Videos with titles like ‘how to’ and ‘step-bystep’ are being viewed for 65 per cent longer than this time last year. WITH many of us having being stuck behind closed doors for a while and sports equipment shops and gyms closed we need to find a way of getting summer body fit. There are many household items you already have that you can use as makeshift weights or exercise aids. How about filling two water bottles the same size with sand from the beach, pebbles or plain old dirt. The weight will then allow them to be used as dumbells

so you can crack on with sculpting your guns. A towel or t-shirt can be used as a resistance band if tied in a loop allowing it to be used for your arm and leg workouts. cent mattress. Almost half of our life is spent in bed, so it’s worth investing in one that gives the right support and prevents back pain. Eating and drinking before bed can affect sleep. Avoid stimulants like caffeine and sugar and opt for a glass of warm milk or a cup of chamomile tea to induce sleep.

FOR someone looking in from the outside I can only imagine how confusing it must be to understand someone who has Bipolar. If you have a friend or family member living with bipolar disorder, this person may be afraid to share how they really feel. During these emotional highs known as mania - I may become full of energy and overly excited about everything and anything! Sometimes, all you see is a fun, optimistic, and bubbly person - the life of the party. But other times, you may notice erratic and strange behaviours with their joyful mood. I become more talkative, to the point where others can’t get a word in. I also speak fast, or come off as impulsive and easily distracted. I tend to be quite repetitive, telling you the same story a million times! When I’m in a depressive episode, I want to be left alone but then get lonely and think everyone is avoiding me! I don’t want to go anywhere, see anyone, or do anything. It’s like no matter what I do, I’m doing something wrong. So, the easiest way to feel better is to hide. Seeing everyone carrying on, living their happy little lives is an annoying reminder of my bipolar disorder and how I’ll never have that kind of stability. No matter what it is - I don’t enjoy things because the smallest details annoy me. If friends invite me out, I imagine waiting for the bus, being crammed against people, crowded bars, and all the other negative things. I think of every possible downside of something, which leaves me dreading the idea of doing anything. I analyse every possible worse case scenario.

I turn into this grumpy overly obsessive lady! During these episodes when I think about the future, I don’t like what I see. I can only see more troubles, endless work to keep well, and an endless string of letdowns and failed relationships. But there is also a place inbetween the middle - between the mania and the depressions there is a small breathing space, I get to catch my breath back, and build up enough energy to roll out the punches the average day gives me! It never lasts for long, so I make the most of it and enjoy it whilst it lasts … I’m not freaking out over small problems, I enjoy the little things, and I’m not loathing the future. I feel normal (my kind of normal!) and it’s how I see myself. I’m not some lunatic running around or some long face lazy slug! I honestly wish I could stay in this mindset all the time, but I know that won’t happen. I’ve accepted that my moods will change on their own. The key to understanding this illness is it’s unpredictable - not the person suffering it, but the illness. I am not unpredictable, but my illness is. Take it one day at a time with your loved one. Have patience. Healing and understanding the illness doesn’t happen overnight, and it’s completely normal to worry about your loved one during their mania and depressive episodes. But the most important thing of all is DON’T GIVE UP ON US … We need your guiding light to keep going, keep believing in us. A quote from my mum when I became really ill eight years ago : “All the time I had hope, I said it for you, and thought it for you even when I knew you had none. I fought to feel it for you, knowing that if I doubted even one single moment you would slip away and the second chance we had with you would be lost.” Love Ms Bipolar x

Facebook is a part of my daily life and I LOVE IT!

The Ginger Cat of Anxiety SUZANNE MANNERS MY mother died last October. Since then I have woken every morning with ‘butterflies’ in my stomach and an overwhelming feeling of dread. Of course I Googled all this and discovered, somewhat surprisingly, that butterflies in the stomach were a symptom of grief and not nerves or an undigested slice of cheese. Our bodies are amazing, not just for their dexterity, but for the interconnectedness of the whole mass, flesh, blood, bone and tiny cells shunted along by bubbles of oxygen and constantly snapping electrical charges. The brain controls all this and what the brain receives the body feels ; mis-

ery loves company as they say. Anxiety and depression will eventually have physical side effects on the body which is why doctors recommend exercise or a good stiff walk rather than a stiff drink. My grief manifests itself in anxiety for my family and for our future. I am no spring chicken and a very keen sense of my own mortality rears its mocking head at regular intervals impatiently tapping its watch. When this happens I do indeed try to ‘walk it off’ with varying degrees of success. Churchill suffered periodic bouts of crippling depression which he called his ‘black dog.’ I don’t have a ‘black dog.’ My manifestation of anxiety is a ginger cat who meows loudly for food while sitting by a full bowl and who surreptitiously knocks objects onto the floor while looking at me with narrowed eyes.

GINGER CAT: Hopefully it will grow bored with me. The ‘ginger cat’ is flea bitten and snaggle-toothed. A feral being devoid of any gentleness. The ‘ginger cat’ wakes me up at night, sits on my chest and breathes fish fumes into my face. Cats are contrary creatures and the ‘ginger cat’ is no different. It will react in ways that cause confusion

and anger. Don’t drink to excess while you are comatose, it will pee in your shoe. Avoiding it will ear n you a sharp swipe and a scratch and don’t leave your valuable sense of worth on the shelf because it will knock it off with devilish abandon. The best way to deal with

it is to confront the beast head on. Don’t show fear, it thrives on that, invite it in and feed it cream and cheese and speak soft words to it until, lulled by lactose, it sleeps... at which point you grab it by the scruff of the neck and throw it in the cat basket. Show it who the alpha To m i s i n t h e r e l a t i o n s h i p , acknowledge its presence, but do not let it own you (I do love a good metaphor and am very partial to the odd analogy, as you may have gathered). Winston managed to get his ‘black dog’ to heel and went on to govern the country through a war so I am damn sure I can keep the ginger cat under control and not indulge it or spoil it and hope that eventually it will grow bored of me and slink off back into the bushes where it belongs. Clear and sensible Dear Euro Weekly News, I am a British expat who has lived in Spain for many years. During the Coronavirus pandemic, I have been very impressed by the Spanish government’s reaction and lockdown rules that have been employed and the clear and sensible relaxations that are being made now as and when safe to do so. The Spanish residents have all acted in a sensible and law-abiding way too.

AS many people have started to return to their workplaces whilst coronavirus isolation eases off, we must ask are these companies ready? Yes, there are to be new health and sanitary measures put into place to save the spread of any virus but surely there will need to be help in place for the effects on employees’ mental health. Whether it be from being stuck in the house with minimal or no contact with others to loss of family members, having suffered from the virus themselves, to facing a new, changed world and even just the pressure of getting stuck back into projects and actual work. Some may fear the return to normal they have been hoping for. In the two months, they have been out of a work environment people have learned to use their time in different ways, taken up activities that they may not have time for when they return to work, gained new skills or found some kind of peace. These may be things that they will be reluctant to let go of or struggle to continue with. People may now have realised that they can live a life without five coffees at Pret a Manger every day or wardrobes full of clothes. This new normal could now allow people to prioritise lifestyle and well-being over work. Companies should be ready for this, will they meet their employees halfway to ease them back into their role? Will they nurture and value them more in an understanding that we have all been through this together. We must remember that everyone from interns, office staff, managers and CEOs have had to deal with fear and create a new life that is comfortable. Let’s hope with that joint experience comes a mutual respect.

The British government is going against a lot of the scientific advice that is being given at the moment and are relaxing the lockdown regulations while the infection and death rate is still too high. There are also a large number of people ignoring the social distancing rules and regulations and it is like a ticking time bomb just waiting to explode into a new and deadly spike of infections. The most worrying point at the moment is if Spain goes ahead as planned to open up to tourism, will there be checks in place on all those coming into the country especially from places like the UK? Will the tourists be policed in the strict manner needed? Tourism is very important to the Spanish economy, I just hope that the resumption is done slowly and carefully so that the country doesn’t get a second spike in infections causing unnecessary pain, death and suffering. Whatever became of Uri Geller?

I’VE lost count of the number of times that I’ve drained the kitchen sink after a washing up session, only to discover a teaspoon languishing at the bottom. This annoys the hell out of me, but when it happened this week I noticed the spoon was bent almost in half. The thought briefly entered my mind that the ghost of Uri Geller, a man who became a multi-millionaire by convincing people that he could bend spoons and other metal objects with supernatural powers, had wafted into our apartment. This I instantly dismissed because I don’t believe in ghosts - and Geller isn’t dead. But he’s not been much in the news ever since he was exposed as a charlatan as far back as the 70s. The last time I wrote about Geller was in 2012 when I penned a piece about Geller’s appearance as a guest on Talk Radio Europe. The station touted him as ‘a famous psychic and paranormalist’ - a claim that left me fizzing with fury because the researchers had clearly done no dig-

ging whatsoever into Geller’s background. Had they done so they would have learned that Geller himself dropped claims to such powers years ago. In the November 2007 issue of the magazine Magische Welt (Magic World) Geller stated: “I’ll no longer say that I

have supernatural powers. I am an entertainer. I want to do a good show. My entire character has changed.” It had to change. Geller launched several lawsuits against people who said he was a fraud, and lost them all.

The man who succeeded best in exposing Geller was Canadian magician and gay atheist James Randi. Geller responded by unsuccessfully suing Randi for $15 million. Believing his life would soon end, having been diagnosed with cancer in 2009, Randi said: ‘I want to be cremated, and I want my ashes blown in Uri Geller’s eyes.’ Mercifully he recovered and, at 91, has a clean bill of health. So what is Geller doing now? Well, the 74-year-old has established the Uri Geller Museum in Israel. Due to open in August it has outside its entrance the world’s largest spoon, almost 19 metres long. The interior features - be still my beating heart! - his 1963 Vespa, and sculptures by Salvador Dali. There are also items from David Bowie, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, Picasso, and Andy Warhol. You don’t need to be psychic to deduce that it also contains bent spoons - thousands of the things. I would have sent him the one I found in the sink, but I bent it back into shape - without resorting to paranormal methods.

Rescued A BRITISH man who was trapped in a well in Bali for six days has been rescued. According to reports, 29-year-old Jacob Roberts was being chased by a dog when he fell into a four-metre-deep near empty reservoir, breaking his leg. His shouts for help were eventually heard by a farmer feeding his cows in Pecatu village, who contacted emergency services. Speaking after the rescue on June 6, South Kuta police chief Yusak Agustinus Sooai said the Brit looked “thin and injured.” He was taken to a hospital nearby for treatment.
