WITH the majority of Spain now having entered Phase 2 of deescalation it is still very surprising to find that the streets are relatively quiet and the businesses that have decided to move ahead and reopen are still not receiving the custom we may have expected. Although people have been very vocal about expressing their need to get out in the streets and return to the bars and coffee shops on social media, now there seems to be some reluctance. It is understandable that residents may have some fears as to what they face outside, but many businesses have gone through extra planning and expense to make their establishments safe for you, the customer. Whether it be marking out spaces to allow social distancing, removing tables to create space, supplying sanitary products or retraining staff on new

health standards, they have gone to this extra trouble not only to

keep their livelihoods going but also to welcome you, the public,

back to the places you enjoyed eating with your family, having a

coffee and a chat with friends or enjoyed taking the children for a

day out. Many beaches are now open, you would think that in itself would have people sprinting from the homes that have imprisoned them the last couple of months, straight for the sea and the sun. Surely that’s one of the main reasons why expats have decided to relocate to Spain, chasing the sun, the relaxed Spanish lifestyle of enjoying things outdoors, tapas, paella, relaxing on the beach, things you won’t find at home. We need to trust in the Health Ministry who have said it is now a safe time for us to leave our homes. We need to give business owners hope and reassurance that their café, restaurant, bar, shop etc will succeed. So let’s get out there and show our support and start to return to a normal life. Let’s appreciate everything we moved to this beautiful country for.

One step beyond BACK TO THE BEACH: Bathers can access the beach but should continue social distancing. AS of Monday, June 1, many more areas of Spain have been able to enjoy taking the next step into Phase Two of the country’s lockdown easing plan. In these regions, the rate of infection of the virus has now dropped to within the criteria that allow further progression through the phase system. Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa announced the good news last Thursday evening, which was a day earlier than planned. This means many rules

have relaxed for residents in these areas, allowing for a continued move towards a normal life. Although these restrictions have eased off, it is important to note that these activities must still be partaken in your own province, unless for work reasons. Shops may now open to 40 per cent capacity and shopping centres have been able to open for the first time since isolation, but with lower capacity in any areas deemed as communal. Bars and restaurants that

had opened but could only use terraces can now invite customers inside as long as they stick to 50 per cent capacity and there is no bar service. Social contact has now been stretched to allow groups of 15 to meet together. However, this does still exclude anybody classed as being vulnerable, elderly or underlying health issues. When it comes to exercise residents no longer need to follow the previous timetable. But, slots of time allocated for the vulnerable should still be adhered to. For the vast majority of people, the news that they can now go to the beach for bathing will be one of the most exciting changes. Swimming pools are also open to 30 per cent capacity and exercise gyms can open for one to one classes by appointment only, these should not include contact sports. Cinemas and theatres have reopened with reduced seating to allow for social distancing measures. As have churches which can welcome up to 50 per cent capacity. In a further move that may bolster the tourism sector hotels have been able to open communal areas but have to respect certain capacity restrictions.

AS you may be aware, negotiations are continuing on the UK’s exit from the EU and some of you have asked what that means for you as UK nationals living in Spain. Please remember that citizens’ rights are already protected by the Withdrawal Agreement, which was ratified by the UK and the EU in January. This guarantees your rights and means that as long as you are legally resident here by the end of 2020: You will be able to continue to live and work in Spain. UK state pensioners will continue to have lifelong healthcare access as long as they remain living in Spain (this also applies to residents who claim a UK state pension in the future) and your UK state pension will continue to be uprated. Therefore, our key message remains to reg-

ister as a resident as soon as you are able. Many of you have contacted us to ask when residency appointments will be available again, given the recent coronavirus lockdown. We understand that in those provinces that have now moved into Phase 2 or 3 of the Spanish government’s de-escalation plan, some offices are opening a limited number of appointments. However, many may not have their appointment systems back up and running yet. You should keep checking the Spanish Public Administration portal (https://sede.ad ministracionespublicas.g ob.es/icpplus/index.html) to see if appointments are available in your area. You may need to be patient as provinces are lifting restrictions at different rates. Some of you have also

HUGH ELLIOTT: UK’s Ambassador to Spain. asked us about the introduction of the TIE (Foreigner Identity Card), the residence document that will explicitly show you have rights under the Withdrawal Agreement. The Spanish authorities have not yet announced when this will be introduced. In the meantime, those registering for the first time will be issued

with the green residency certificate. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I know that because of the suspension of residency appointments during the State of Alarm, many UK nationals are concerned about their ability to obtain the correct documentation before December 31. I want to reassure people on two points.

“If you already have the green residency certificate, your core rights are protected and it remains a valid document, even after the end of the transition period. “If you don’t yet have your green residency certificate there is, likewise, no need for alarm. “We continue to advise people to get an appointment as soon as you can. However, as long as you are living in Spain and can prove you satisfy the legal conditions of residence (ie sufficient income and access to healthcare) by December 31, 2020, your rights are assured even if you are not able to get the physical document by the end of the year.” Another of our key messages continues to be to exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one. For those who are yet to do so, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has provid-

ed information on their website about the Jefaturas Provinciales opening for appointments in those areas that have moved to Phase 2 or 3. Andalucian Museums reopen Products CONSUME ANDALUCIA is a campaign commissioned by the Andalucian government to remind everyone about the sacrifice of farmers, ranchers, and fishermen, who during the State of Alarm have worked to supply the Andalucian, national and world markets. “With the hashtag # ConsumeAndalucia, citizens have the opportunity to demonstrate on social networks their generosity, commitment, solidarity, and gratitude to those who these past weeks worked in silence to guarantee the supply of basic products in the shopping cart. Agriculture, livestock, fishing, and sustainable development were the heroes, and now is the time for recognition and support.” Throughout the crisis supermarkets across Spain experienced the largest rise in sales for years, some quoting a 30 per cent increase, this is now expected to flatten out as people eat out at restaurants and are also able to buy fresh farm produce themselves, a trend the government hopes will continue.

ROQUETAS DE MAR Council has reopened its museums to the public following an exhaustive disinfection of all areas and facilities to guarantee visitors’ health safety. The municipality’s most visited site, the Santa Ana castle, is among the places which opened its doors once more. Popular with both residents and tourists, it can now be visited from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm and from 5-8pm. Members of the public don’t have to book in advance, but there is a limit on the number of people allowed in at one time in accordance with the lockdown de-escalation process rules and regulations. The same measures are in place in the municipal ‘Aula del Mar’ museum and the bullfighting museum.

RESTRICTIONS: A maximum number of 24 people are allowed in the Santa Ana castle at one time.

Taking off again AIR Nostrum and Vueling flights will be taking off from Almeria once more in July. As it stands, Air Nostrum has programmed three connections a week in July between the provincial airport and Madrid and one a day in August. Vueling will be offering a daily service between Almeria and Barcelona. Both airlines stressed they have implemented safety and hygiene measures aimed at preventing a risk of coronavirus infection and recommended by air safety agencies.

Greener mobility EL EJIDO is on the road to more sustainable, environmentally friendly mobility thanks to plans to have 10 electric vehicle charging points in the locality by the end of this year. There is already a charging station with two connections near to the municipal swimming pool on Avenida Perez de Arenaza. A further four, each with a couple of supply sockets, will now be installed in key areas. There will be another one in the vicinity of the pool, one on the boulevard, a third in Balerma and one other in Almerimar. El Ejido mayor Francisco Gongora said the aim is to “encourage the use of this kind of vehicle and therefore contribute to environmental protection by reducing CO2 emissions.”

Caught out

A COUPLE of scuba divers are in trouble after the Guardia Civil caught them illegally netting octopuses on Roquetas de Mar’s Las Salinas beach. Guardia officers had spotted the two divers out in the water. They watched them come out of the sea and take off their wetsuits, then go back in and bring

out two large baskets full of recently caught octopus and load them into a vehicle. The officers proceeded to identify the divers and inspect the catch. It turned out they had in violation of fishing laws captured 25 octopus, five of them immature, and adding up to 30 kilos in total.

A 60-YEAR-OLD paraglider had to be evacuated by helicopter after suffering injuries in an accident in Pulpi at midday on Sunday May 31. The emergency services reported that the 60-yearold came down in a difficult to access area of the

ADRA Council has given the go-ahead for the acquisition of 30 new rubbish skips at a cost of more than €36,000 as part of a plan to reinforce and improve the municipal cleaning service. Shopkeeper pulls shotgun A NIJAR shopkeeper is under arrest for pulling a shotgun on a customer when they got into an argument over the price of watermelon. A Guardia Civil patrol on duty in the Campohermoso area stepped in after noticing a member of the public looking highly agitated. They told the officers they had been buying the fruit from a local shop and when there was a dispute over the cost, the shopkeeper went into a backroom, grabbed a 12-calibre shotgun and aimed it at their chest. Terrified, the customer fled, which is when they

Cycling mapped out THE Junta de Andalucia has mapped out a nearly 100-kilometre tourist cycle route along a stretch of Almeria’s coastline with the aim of encouraging sustainable tourism connected to the Mediterranean. The Junta’s provincial delegate for Development and Infrastructure, Eloisa Cabrera, oversaw the installation in Almeria City of signposts, information panels and markers for the ‘EuroVelo 8’ route, much of which goes through the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. The delegate highlighted the attractions of cycle tourism in Almeria, saying it offers “the best beaches and climate to receive European tourists who are lovers of the outdoors,” while at the same time “encouraging local cycle movement, which is so recommended in these times.”

SPEEDED UP: The provincial administration wants 24 of the projects underway as soon possible to help mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 crisis. ALMERIA’S highway network is set for major i m p ro v e ments under a mult i - m i l l i o n e u ro i n vestment plan, the provincial government has promised. The Diputacion de Almeria is putting a total of €17.2 million into 58 road maintenance and modernisation projects across the province over the next three. The administration says the result will be greater highway safety, better access to and communication between the different municipalities, and improved traffic flow on the 1,200-kilometre network. RESIDENTS and holidaymakers in Mojacar will not have to worry about set times for access to the locality’s beaches or limits on how long they can spend swimming and sunbathing this summer. Commenting on the special measures it has adopted for managing beaches in the face of Covid-19, the council explained that factors like the municipality’s low population

Fake car theft report found out A FA K E c a r t h e f t r e p o r t h a s landed a young Mojacar driver in trouble with the Guardia Civil. The 22-year-old told the Guardia he had left his car parked close to his home, only to find the following morning it was gone. A short time later a patrol found the abandoned vehicle in the Marina de la Torre area. Officers failed to find any signs it had been forced open or damaged, or any fingerprints or other proof pointing to it

having been stolen. What did emerge from the investigation, and from cooperation with the Local Police, was that before the young man told the Guardia his car had been nicked he had been surprised driving at high speed and going the wrong way, and had ignored officers’ instructions. The young man has now admitted he had made a false report and faces charges for fraud.

Giant geode opens ONE of the Costa Almeria’s most important natural attractions, the Pulpi giant geode, is set to reopen to the public on June 12. The reopening of the Rica mine to visit what is one of the biggest gypsum crystals in the world follows a remodelling of the facilities, including the installation of a lift connecting two galleries, and the adoption of new hygiene and safety procedures in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. All vehicles entering the mine area will have to be disinfected via a sprinkler system and all visitors will have to go through a ‘disinfection room,’ where their shoes and hands will be disinfected and their temperatures will be taken. Behind the curtain By Damon Mitchell

GIBRALTAR-based author, Lowri Madoc, is set to publish her first children’s book in June 2020. Euro Weekly News had the chance to speak to Lowri about the first of her six planned books ‘Hetty Backstage,’ which she says is “a semi-autobiographical children’s story about a young girl who follows her famous actor parents around the country’s theatres, TV studios and movie sets on her weekends away from boarding school.” As the daughter of two of Britain’s favourite actors, Ruth and Philip Madoc, Lowri was aware her home life was a little different from that of many of her friends at boarding school. “Growing up, my weekends and holidays were often spent backstage in theatres and on TV and film sets. So, the book actually describes genuine scenarios.” Her parents’ work meant large parts of Lowri’s formative years were spent immersed in sitcoms, game shows, pantos and films, as well as various TV drama series.

From ‘It’s a Knockout’ to ‘Dostoyevsky,’ the exposure couldn’t have been more diverse. Occasionally, but reluctantly, Lowri would be asked to get involved in front of the camera. Funny, yet usually cringey, her credits include ‘Hi-deHi,’ the game show ‘Whose Baby?’ and ‘This is Your Life.’ Not interested in the limelight, Lowri was however captivated by what went on backstage and onset. A f t e r m a n y h o u r s spent with production staff and

house teams, it was little wonder she chose a career in stage management and then theatre management. Lowri is a first-time writer and thinks she has started a “whole new chapter” of her life. “I have enjoyed using the isolation period to do something creative and also got Mum involved to feel like we are doing something t o g e t h e r, s h e w i l l b e doing a special audio version of the book.”

Interest-free loans due to Covid-19 INDIVIDUALS can apply for interest and fee-free loans to cover the rent of their main residence due from April 1, 2 0 2 0 . T h e l o a n s a re expected to benefit around 450,000 families, protecting not only the landlord, but also tenants. The loans will be backed by the government’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), through the country’s official Credit Institute (ICO). So far 11 banks have agreed to offer the loans. They include B a n k i a , S a n t a n d e r, S a b a d e l l , C a j a m a r, Liberbank, Unicaja, Abanca, Bankoa, Laboral Kutxa, Caja Pollença and Caja Ontenient. MITMA expects

more banks to sign up to offer the loans over the coming days. The loans are for people who have seen their income reduced, or who have been laid off from work, as a result of Covid-19 and those with minors or dependents in their care as a result of the crisis,

which is affecting their ability to return to work. The loans will cover a maximum of six months of rent, up to €900 per month from April 1, 2020. The loan can be paid back over a period of six years, with an additional four years, if required.

Naughty Prince A BELGIAN royal family member flouted lockdown rules in southern Spain and then tested positive for the coronavirus. Prince Joachim, who is nephew to Belgium’s King Philippe, went to a house party in Cordoba, and then tested positive afterwards for a mild form of the virus. The young royal is said to have provided the names of 27 people for contact tracing purposes. Joachim arrived in Madrid on May 24 and then took a train to Cordoba, where it is alleged he was met up with his girlfriend. The story has raised eyebrows on a couple of levels. Firstly, the party potentially broke State of Alarm rules on the number of people that could get together under one roof, though the exact number has not been made public. Secondly, Joachim was given permission to travel between different areas of Spain as he was meant to be taking up a placement with an Andalucia area

SPAIN'S poorest people are to get around €500 per month in a basic income plan approved by the government. The scheme has been spurred on by the coronavirus pandemic, and has set the support at roughly half of the minimum wage of €1,108 per month per person. The government says that people aged between 23 and 65 years with assets of less than €16,614, which don’t include their home and certain loans, will be eligible. Deputy Prime Minister, and leader of the left-wing Podemos Party, Pablo Iglesias said: “It is a historic day for our democracy and the fact that the government is going for social justice and that it takes the Con-

UN applauds Spain SPAIN has changed its policy over allowing a Moroccan girl to go to school. The UN child rights committee in Geneva said that the decision to allow the 12-year-old into a primary school in Melilla, Spain’s enclave in North Africa, was a good example in dealing with around

80 similar cases. The decision came six weeks after the UN committee asked Spain to take steps to admit the girl, who was actually born and raised in Melilla, to be admitted into the public education system. The whole issue revolved around the child and her mother being clas-

sified as ‘irregular’ residents, and so she was not allowed to access public schooling. Back in 2018, she joined other youngsters in the same position starting a two-year campaign. That included staging a weekly protest outside the Ministry of Education in Melilla.

On the run DETAINED: Four fleeing refugees.

FOUR fleeing refugees were removed from a long distance coach service between Andalucia and Barcelona for presenting symptoms of the coronavirus. They had escaped as part of a group of six North Africans from a Red Cross centre in the Gaudix area of Granada, and made their way onto the coach. National Police officers waited for the service to arrive at the San Andrés bus station in Murcia City, having received a tip off from the Guardia Civil down south that the escapees were on board.

The coach had 22 passengers on it and police officers wearing PPE safety clothing removed the four suspected virus carriers and sufferers. All of the men on the run were taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia, and it was confirmed that one of them had tested positive for the coronavirus. The coach service operated by the Alsa Company continued to head north to Catalonia, but with the infection confirmed, all of the remaining passengers and the driver faced virus testing and quarantining.

It’s a fresh blow to the north-eastern area of the country that last week saw car-maker Nissan announce plans to shut its Barcelona factory, with the loss of around 3,000 jobs. Rolls Royce move company, Bergen Engines, has been in Tarragona for over 30 years, and is switching the operation to Alicante. Royce’s Spanish marine division was largely acquired by Norwegian-owned Konsgberg Maritime Spain last year, who then moved

their registered office to Alicante. The Catalonia business is said to generate annual sales of €800 million, with the company having an order book of around €450 million. Bergen Engines specialises in making diesel and medium speed petrol engines for merchant ships.

STOLEN VEHICLES: Scene from the ‘Chop Shop.’ AN assembly plant taking stolen vehicles in Madrid has been closed down by the National Police who estimate that the gang of seven who were involved made €600,000 from their activities. The seven men each had their own specific job and between them would steal cars to ord e r, r e m o v e p a r t s which they sold, sent remaining scrap to breakers yards and

even repaired vehicles using the parts from the stolen cars. The investigation started in February of this year when officers heard rumours of the activities of the gang working from a warehouse in the Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares and when they raided the premises, they found three stolen cars. They also discovered that some of the stolen cars weren’t, but were

owned by associates of the gang so as well as theft of genuine vehicles, there was also an insurance scam which saw two individuals (from Romania) claiming theft and receiving payment from insurance companies for cars that went through the warehouse. So far, officers have established 25 alleged criminal acts against those who were arrested.

Pablo Iglesias is the centre of attention due to his encounters with Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo in parliamentary headquarters. To l e d o d e d i c a t e d h e r speech to an attack on the P o d e m o s l e a d e r, c a l l i n g h i m a n “ i m p o s t o r, ” “ l i a r ” and “son of a terrorist.” Iglesias struck back by taking a swipe at her noble status and mockingly referring to her as a “marquise.” Álvarez de Toledo is indeed the Marquise de Casa Fuerte. Now, this is all going on whilst these “leaders” and decision-makers are supposed to be creating a way forward for Spain and

people are struggling through the economic fallout from the health crisis. The tactics are reminiscent of the days of the “two Spains” and show far more of a split than unity. Whilst this is going on Sanchez has now made clear his plan to push for a sixth and final State of Alarm. Union asks BA for answers

THE European Union confirms that it has approved the volume of subsidies granted by Spain to electricity suppliers who operate in the Balearics, the Ca­ nary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla. This financial support falls under the terms of the EU Service of General Eco­ nomic Interest (SGEI) and is granted in order to keep electricity prices similar to those charged in mainland Spain. These subsidies may continue until 2029 except for the Balearics as a new underwater connection with the main­ land is due to go into service in 2025.

Last week saw the release of the UK’s latest flash GDP figure, which fell by ­5.8 per cent, while Germany ­ the Eurozone’s largest economy ­ entered a technical recession. The pound fell to a six­week low of €1.11 against the euro, while the GBP/USD exchange rate fluctu­ ated between highs of $1.21 and

What do you need to look out for? Tuesday will see the release of the UK’s ILO Unemployment Rate report for March. The unemployment rate is ex­ pected to rise from 4 per cent to 4.4 per cent, a result which could keep the pound on the back foot. Bank of England (BoE) Chief Econ­

omist Andy Haldane said that we could see a return to ‘80s levels of unemployment.’ US­China trade developments will continue to drive the US dollar this week. Any signs of deteriorating re­ lations between the two superpow­ ers could prove USD­positive. EUR investors will be focusing on the Eurozone’s latest PMI reports and will be looking for indications that output is starting to recover now that economies in the currency bloc are reopening. Who’d be a politician?

ONE of the many drawbacks of this virus pandemic is that due to shortages of staff, producing a column dealing with current affairs can be most difficult. (In fact the mere continuance of this EWN publication during the crisis is nothing short of a minor miracle, for which all concerned must be highly congratulated!) It does however mean that, due to articles needing to be submitted much earlier than usual, there is a danger of subject matter being ‘old news’ by the time it finds its way into print. I sincerely hope this is not the case with this week’s blurb which was submitted last Friday. It concerns the never ending onslaught of pressure on Mr Cummings to resign or be sacked from the Conservative party. To me the whole unrelenting blitz of left wing media hounding, and indeed the criticism from dissenters in his own party, seemed utterly disproportionate to the actual ‘crime’ he is supposed to have committed; particularly in the light of even more serious accusations being aimed at other political figures, including chip off the old block, Steven Kinnock, Robert Jenrick and that awful SNP

BREXIT: Remainers want to obtain a two-year extension of the transition period. whinger Ian Blackford, who allegedly drove 600 miles from London to Skye some three days after lockdown was declared. So why are the media not chomping after these other lockdown breachers in anything like the relentless fashion they have pursued Mr Cummings? Well, surprise surprise after I dug a little deeper, a word popped up that most of us would

like to consider lost in the mists of time. Yep you’ve guessed it - Brexit! It appears that while both Mr Cummings and Mr Johnson, both leading Brexiteers, were incapacitated with the Corona virus, a number of diehard remainers decided to use this uncertain period to devise a way to obtain a two-year extension of the transition period - due to be decided next month. Although the whole devious,

left wing media assisted plot, is far too complicated for these few lines, it basically meant that if Mr Cummings could be got rid of and the ‘remain’ supporting conservative MPs win a vote of no confidence against Mr Johnson, the chances of getting a two-year extension in June would be greatly enhanced. This would mean the UK would be bound by its obligations and EU international agreements for a further two years, and who knows? Over this period the undemocratic and bitter loser camp would have all that time to work on reversing the Brexit decision. Can you imagine the horror of that!? Thankfully, at the time of writing, they have not, even with the relentless badgering of their media pals, managed to oust Mr Cummings. In the light of this failure, rebel conservative remainers have stepped away from the vote of no confidence idea, knowing too well that should it have failed, their political careers would be over. The Importance of being Resident in Spain CONSULAR MATTERS ONE of things that you hear mentioned in Spain is the word Residencia and Residency. A large number of foreign citizens during the Coronavirus crisis in Spain have found themselves stranded in their home country due to the fact that they did not have re s i d e n c y i n S p a i n , b u t what does it mean to be legally resident in Spain? As Danish Consul for Andalucia and Extremadura and as a lawyer I have received numerous messages from Danish citizens who wanted to retur n to Spain where they have lived for a number of years. Sadly this was not permitted by the Spanish government as they did not have residency and were there-

This is in case even if they were on the padron, had an NIE number or had paid for example property taxes here in Spain. This is the same for other citizens from for example the United Kingdom, and indeed all over the world. In Spain it is law that if you spend more than 183 days in

any year you are resident and you have to pay taxes in Spain. For citizens of the United Kingdom this is something of extreme importance as the UK is in a transition period and will leave the European Union on 31.12.20. At the time of writing no deal has been done between the EU and the UK and this means that UK citi-

zens who are not resident will be limited to stays of 90 days in a 180-day period. They will also need health insurance as the current system of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will come to an end. Of course there may be a deal, but after 30 years as a lawyer I know not to speculate. So what can be done?

Well wherever you are from, if you are living here in Spain you need to get your residency, and for UK citizens you need to be living here in Spain before 31.12.20. The Spanish government has extended the deadline to apply for residencia until June 2021 but as I said you need to be living here before the end of 2020. You will also need to take advice from a lawyer or someone suitably qualified re your tax situation and your Will, as if you are resident you can choose which law applies in the event of your death. Make sure that you take advice re taxes as depending on your particular circumstances one country may be better than another. ON Monday, May 25, police officers in Minnesota received a call to attend a ‘forgery in progress’ after a 46year-old black man, George Floyd, allegedly tried to purchase goods in a shop using a counterfeit $20 note. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers ordered Floyd out of his vehicle and cuffed him. Then he was pinned to the ground and surrounded by four officers, one of whom forced his knee into the back of Floyd’s neck. The officer’s statement said that Floyd had “physically resisted officers,” but many witnesses dispute this claim. Footage of Floyd’s detainment has already gone viral as they were streamed on Facebook Live by bystander Darnella Frazier. The video shows Floyd groaning and repeatedly struggling to say “I can’t breathe” to Derek Chauvin, the officer with his knee on Floyd’s neck. Floyd can be heard telling Chauvin: “I’m about to die. I can’t breathe. Please, the knee in my neck, I can’t breathe.” As the crowds plead with the officers to let him up as he is not resisting arrest, he eventually falls silent and stops moving, however, Chauvin defiantly does not remove his knee until the emergency services arrive. Floyd was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. A police statement states that he appeared to be in ‘medical distress,’ it did not mention that he had been pinned to the ground with the weight of a police officer crushing his airway. I am sure for a lot of people this brings to mind the case of Rodney King, who on March 3, 1991, was violently beaten by LAPD officers during an arrest for leaving the scene of an alleged crime and resisting arrest. These ‘attacks’ are separated by almost 30 years. Has mankind not evolved in the last 30 years? What have we been doing with our time? Have our heads been stuck behind laptops, phones and social media as technology advances, but our own minds, actions and beliefs do not? The four officers involved in Floyd’s killing have all been dismissed. Chauvin has since been charged with his murder. I suppose it was lucky there was somebody there with a mobile phone to record it for social media.

So many thousands of people had their flights cancelled due to Covid-19 it’s obviously not an overnight task to process the refunds, but Ryanair haven’t done themselves any favours and have exacerbated the situation by issuing vouchers in lieu of a refund when a simple email stating refunds will be issued ASAP would have calmed this very emotive issue.

Figure it out Dear Euro Weekly News, Does anybody have a clue as to what on earth has happened with the Spanish Coronavirus figures? One day it was 56 deaths in a day and then all of a sudden it’s 35 within a week. Also, there was some miscount or misinformat i o n i n v o l v i n g a d i ff e re n c e o f 2 , 0 0 0 d e a t h s . . . 2,000!! How can we put our trust in these guys if they cannot even give us the right information? By doing this it will only goad the conspiracy theorists into getting on board. Take manageable bites WORKING from home can be tough, so how can you keep motivated? If you keep putting things off then the ‘Eat the frog’ method might

be for you. This productivity method came from a quote by Mark T wain: ‘Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest

of the day.’ In other words, schedule tasks from hardest to easiest and everything else will seem so much easier. If you are more visual, divide your tasks into categories: To Do, Doing, and Done. Arrange them in a visual way; like post-its on a white board and make sure you check it regularly and remove when complete. If you’re trying to create achievable goals, you could try the timeboxing method which allots specific time slots for specific work in your daily plan. Split up your day into blocks of time with specific tasks; like dedicating a block to answering emails instead of interrupting yourself while you’re in the middle of writing a proposal because your sister called.

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED HOW many times have we heard the words “But you don’t look like someone with a mental illness” … “ Gosh I didn’t know you were Bipolar” ... “What have you got to be depressed for, your life is great!” “Oh sh*t, sorry. I forgot my pink neon mental illness sign at home today, I will make sure to wear it tomorrow!” (little bit of sarcasm to lighten the mood up) Why is it that to be taken seriously, to be listened to people think that you need to look ill? Sometimes a mental illnesses can show physically, of course, like the appearance of somebody struggling with eating disorders or scars made through selfharm. But so much of the time there is nothing physically wrong to see, and you would never know! We have a special super power to hide behind a smile or a laugh, to carry on as normal in front of people and to take the mask off when we are alone. As someone who has self-harmed on and off since the age of 13 years old - and now fast approaching 29 my body is covered in the giveaway marks that cannot be mistaken for anything other than self-harm. But yes, I still feel the need to lie sometimes when someone asks ... “What happened to your arm?” …. “Oh I scratched it whilst gardening at the weekend!”... I have had my fair share of stares, and looks of horror, fear and disgust. The thing about my self-harm though, is not punishment, I don’t feel the need to punish myself, for me it’s a form of release. When you are in such a dark place and you feel numb, to inflict pain is a way of feeling alive and feeling SOMETHING! It does become highly

addictive, once you start it is very hard to stop. It will be nine months this week since I last self-harmed, the thought of it creeps up on me every time I have a slip, but I find distraction straight away and try to fight the urge to inflict physical pain on myself but all of my scars from over the years are still there… still visible… so, to have them pointed out to me, is yet another reminder of the struggle I have to live with every day! Then ignorance sets in. I also struggle with depression, and regular suicidal thoughts, as well as having crippling anxiety (as if all the rest wasn't enough!). If any of this is mentioned, people will look me up and down, with puzzled expressions on their faces, before announcing, “well, I would have never of known, you carry it so well.” But what they fail to understand is that to be ill, you don’t need to look sick. I believe that there is such a risk nowadays that any type of mental illness will not be taken seriously, due to the misconception that people who look okay are okay, and I really hope that people begin to realise that saying to somebody who is ill that they “look fine” or “You’ve got it all, just cheer up” can demean that person and their illness, and prevent them from seeking the help that they need. I also wanted to show anyone who may be struggling that they should not feel as though they do not deserve to be listened to because they aren’t “ill enough” or “look ill.” I really hope that this article encourages people to ask for help as early as possible, and that they will reach out to others so they do not have to suffer alone. I also hope that others reading this will look at the person next to them and just BE KIND, because we never know what someone may be going through! A PERFECTLY preserved ‘archeological treasure’ has been unearthed beneath vines near the city of Verona in Northern Italy. The ancient Roman mosaic was discovered by archeologists in the hills above Negrar di Valpolicella after countless decades of failed attempts. Almost a century previously, the remains of a Roman villa had been found in the area, but in 1922 the dig was abandoned. Last summer, a team from the Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Verona resumed the excavations. After halting during the coronavirus pandemic, the digging began again last week and the discovery was made. Experts say the pristine mosaic floor could date to third century AD, believed to be the date of the remains of the villa on the site. The area is still being excavated to see the full extent of the find.
