PHASING OUT WITH the majority of Spain now having entered Phase 2 of de-escalation it is still very surprising to find that the streets are relatively quiet and the businesses that have decided to move ahead and reopen are still not receiving the custom we may have expected. Although people have been very vocal about expressing their need to get out in the streets and return to the bars and coffee shops on social media, now there seems to be some reluctance.
It is understandable that residents may have some fears as to what they face outside, but many businesses have gone through extra planning and expense to make their establishments safe for you, the customer. Whether it be marking out spaces to allow social distancing, removing tables to create space, supplying sanitary products or retraining staff on new health standards, they have gone to this extra trouble not only to keep their livelihoods going but also to welcome you, the public, back to the places
A young family enjoying the beach. you enjoyed eating with your family, having a coffee and a chat with friends or enjoyed taking the children for a day out. Many beaches are now open, you would think that in itself would have
people sprinting from the homes that have imprisoned them the last couple of months, straight for the sea and the sun. Surely that’s one of the main reasons why expats have decided to relocate
to Spain, chasing the sun, the relaxed Spanish lifestyle of enjoying things outdoors, tapas, paella, relaxing on the beach, things you won’t find at home. We need to trust in the Health Ministry who have said it is now a safe time for us to leave our homes. We need to give business
owners hope and reassurance that their café, restaurant, bar, shop etc will succeed. So let’s get out there and show our support and start to return to a normal life. Let’s appreciate everything we moved to this beautiful country for.

BACK TO THE BEACH: Bathers can access the beach but should continue social distancing.
A S o f M o n d a y, J u n e 1, many more areas of Spain have been able to enjoy taking the next step into P h a s e Tw o o f t h e c o u n t r y ’s l o c k d o w n easing plan. In these regions, the rate of infection of the virus has now dropped to within the criteria that allow further progression through the phase system. Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa announced the good news last Thursday evening, which was a day earlier than planned. This means many rules have relaxed for residents in these areas, allowing for a continued move towards a normal life. Although these restrictions have eased off, it is important to note that these activities must still be partaken in your own
province, unless for work reasons. Shops may now open to 40 per cent capacity and shopping centres have been able to open for the first time since isolation, but with lower capacity in any areas deemed as communal. Bars and restaurants that had opened but could only use terraces can now invite customers inside as long as they stick to 50 per cent capacity and there is no bar service. Social contact has now been stretched to allow groups of 15 to meet together. Howeve r, t h i s d o e s s t i l l e x clude anybody classed as being vulnerable, elderly or underlying health issues. When it comes to exercise residents no longer need to follow the previous timetable. But, slots of time allo-
cated for the vulnerable should still be adhered to. For the vast majority of people, the news that they can now go to the beach for bathing will be one of the most exciting changes. Swimming pools are also open to 30 per cent capacity and exercise gyms can open for one to one classes by appointment only, these should not include contact sports. Cinemas and theatres have reopened with reduced seating to allow for social distancing measures. As h a v e c h u rc h e s w h i c h can welcome up to 50 per cent capacity. In a further move that may bolster the tourism sector hotels have been able to open communal areas but have to respect certain capacity restrictions.

AS you may be aware, negotiations are continuing on the UK’s exit from the EU and some of you have asked what that means for you as UK nationals living in Spain. Please remember that citizens’ rights are already protected by the Withdrawal Agreement, which was ratified by the UK and the EU in January. This guarantees your rights and means that as long as you are legally resident here by the end of 2020: You will be able to continue to live and work in Spain. UK state pensioners will continue to have lifelong healthcare access as long as they remain living in Spain (this also applies to residents who claim a UK state pension in the future) and your UK state pension will continue to be uprated. Therefore, our key message remains to reg-
ister as a resident as soon as you are able. Many of you have contacted us to ask when residency appointments will be available again, given the recent coronavirus lockdown. We understand that in those provinces that have now moved into Phase 2 or 3 of the Spanish government’s de-escalation plan, some offices are opening a limited number of appointments. However, many may not have their appointment systems back up and running yet. You should keep checking the Spanish Public Administration portal (https://sede.ad ministracionespublicas.g ob.es/icpplus/index.html) to see if appointments are available in your area. You may need to be patient as provinces are lifting restrictions at different rates. Some of you have also

Hunting tiger mosquitoes THE Environment department of Finestrat is fumigating public areas to eliminate tiger mosquitoes. Operatives are currently focusing on storm drains, the La Cala stream, Font del Moli, the Bassa de L’Hambra water deposit, Font de Carre park and other humid areas. Once completed, the fumigation team will move on to Finestrat’s urbanisations and rural areas under a programme that continues until September. The town hall is also distributing leaflets, available from municipal offices, informing the public of easy ways to prevent the mosquitoes from breeding. Recycling on wheels THE mobile Ecoparque returns to the River Algar car park in Altea this Saturday, June 6, between 9am and 1pm. Owing to demand for the mobile recycling service from other municipalities, the Ecoparque will now visit the town every two weeks. The Ecoparque reaches Altea la Vieja on June 12 between 6.30pm and 8pm at the Centro Cultural and Altea la Vella school car park and, again, will return at fortnightly intervals.
PROMENADE: With directions to follow. THE Infrastructure department of Campello has finished marking the Carrer la Mar promenade with directions for pedestrians to follow. The promenade signage is the second phase of the town hall’s plan to guarantee social distancing for pedestrians, although Infrastructures councillor Julio Oca explained that work will not start on the Muchavista area until directions are added to the open-air market and municipal buildings open to the public.

DONATION: €1,000 in supplies for the La Nucia and Alfaz food banks. THE U3A Marina Baja’s president Anthony Coles recently met representatives from the La Nucia and Alfaz food banks. Together they spent €500 on vital supplies for each bank which was made possible by the charity fundraising that U3A Marina Baixa members contribute to throughout the year.
The committee meet this week with the necessary social distancing, but admitted that it looked as though there would be no General Meeting for the foreseeable future. U3A meetings could recommence September and members will be kept informed through secretary Joan Flint’s emails and reports from the press officer.
Bee off! ALICANTE City’s fire brigade removed a swarm of 3,000 bees from inside a Vistahermosa shopping centre. Six firefighter specialists dressed in protective clothing, who found the swarm in soundproofing material in a storeroom adjoining the shop, took an hour to remove and transfer the protected species to a more suitable location.

More accidents
LA CARRASQUETA: Popular with speedloving motorcyclists. THE town hall of Jijona appealed for urgent help in policing the winding Carrasqueta mountain pass. Five motorcycle accidents were recently reported there in seven days and the Local Police have received complaints that bikers are exceeding the speed limit and ignoring the need for social distancing. “Residents are alarmed at the behaviour and the misuse of the road by some motorcyclists,” Jijona’s mayor Isabel Lopez protested to the central government’s sub-delegation to Alicante Province.
More police patrols are needed on the mountain road at weekends and public holidays, she said. Lopez described the problem of bikers using the La Carrasqueta as “historic” with a long list of serious and sometimes fatal smashes. “The majority of motorcycle accidents in the municipality occurred on the same section of the La Carrasqueta road long before the State of Alarm,” the mayor said. “But the situation has become considerably worse now that lockdown measures are being eased,” she added.
THE Rotary Club of Alicante donated €2,000 to Monforte del Cid to complement school meal grants during the State of Alarm. Keep right on ALCOY City Hall launched a campaign reminding pedestrians to use their righthand pavement and always keep to the right. “This contributes to a smooth transition to the new normality, enabling a correct use of public spaces and minimising the risk of Covid-19 contagions,” a city hall statement explained. The municipal recommendations also pointed out that if a pedestrian walks on the left, he or she must always give way to those on the right. Neither should they impede
other pedestrians, city hall said. The only exceptions to keeping to the right are at some zebra crossings, traffic lights or getting into a vehicle. City hall is announcing the measures on the social media and local broadcasting channels as well as the printed and digital press. Volunteers from Proteccion Civil, the Red Cross and the Forest Firefighting Group (ACIF) are also on the streets, informing residents of de-escalation safety measures, including the need to keep to the right.
OAC reopens CALPE’S Public Attention Office (OAC) is open once again between 8am and 4.30pm from Monday to Friday. It is necessary to make an appointment beforehand on the www.calp.es/es/oac/cita-previa website and users should wear face masks and observe social distancing.
Help arrived mally covers part - or all - of the cost of school meals for vulnerable children, some families have found it hard to make ends meet during the State of Alarm. Although grants have continued for pupils receiving a 100 per cent subsidy, this ceased for those in
the 94 per cent and 82 per cent category until Rotary Club Alicante stepped in to help solve the problem. Maria Dolores Berenguer, Monforte’s mayor, afterwards thanked the association for their gesture of solidarity: “Some people are having a truly bad time right now,” she said.

Open and shut case THE PSPV-PSOE opposition party called on Calpe’s mayor, Ana Sala, to reopen Calle Pintor Sorolla to traffic. Vehicles were banished from part of this road to prevent over-crowding and ensure that pedestrians can maintain the required distance. The move also aims to boost local shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, but the PSPV claimed that closing the street had the opposite effect. The town hall did not assess the situation correctly and did not discuss closing the street beforehand with business-owners. “This has had no effect on the hospitality trade, shops or residents and has created problems for drivers,” the PSPV claimed. “The road should reopen, as there is no point in pedestrianising this section,” the communique insisted.

New normal REOPENED: ‘New normal’ as La Vila’s beaches reopen. AS Villajoyosa’s beaches reopened, the first day was pronounced normal by Mayor Andreu Verdu. The beach was cleaned early that morning, while accesses and beach equipment was disinfected in a routine that will be repeated each morning and afternoon, said Beaches councillor Jose Carlos Gil.

MOFTAG stays in touch
MASKED COMMITTEE: Anita Becker, Barbara Anderson, Jenny Godfrey, Eileen Brain and Molly Lambie. THE Moftag Club of Calpe has maintained contact with its 49 members throughout the Coronavirus lockdown. Even though there were no weekly meetings and social events, Moftag’s seven-member committee took a different group of members each week, phoning to see if they needed anything and generally just cheering them up and lifting their spirits. Members as far afield as Australia, France, Scotland, Wales and England received voice messages via WhatsApp or emails, keeping them in touch with their friends in Calpe.
Moftag was also able to donate 100 Mas y Mas food vouchers, each for €10, for Caritas to give to needy people in Calpe. Now that restrictions have been eased slightly, the committee is thinking of organising small groups to meet for coffee each week, to keep members in touch and to promote the friendship that Moftag encourages. Benidorm plays it safe THE beaches of Benidorm will not reopen until June 15 at the earliest. The decision was taken from the point of view of “prudence and caution” and a sense of responsibility, he explained. From the moment Benidorm’s beaches were cordoned off on March 14, the town hall has been planning how to reopen

THE National Police arrested a Polish man of 34, wanted in his own country for drug trafficking. He was detained during a routine State of Alarm check on vehicles which served the double purpose of stemming the wave of robberies in the Denia area, police sources revealed.

Fugitive caught More setbacks
Stopping the car that he was driving and identifying him, the National Police officers discovered that a European warrant requesting his arrest and extradition had been issued against him.
He stood trial and received a four-year sentence in Poland for possessing large amounts of amphetamines, cocaine and marihuana, but fled the country immediately after the hearing.
THE town hall of San Juan confirmed that restoring Torre Ansaldo, interrupted by the coronavirus crisis, will eventually go ahead. Work was due to start last March and should have been completed by May but had to be postponed owing to the pandemic. The Ansaldo tower was originally built in the late 15th century as part of the coastal defence system and is one of the oldest in the network although residential, agricultural and religious buildings

No lockdown on gender violence CALLS to Women’s Centre helplines received an average 145 calls each day after the March 14 State of Alarm announcement. In all, the Valencian Community centres received 9,953 calls, of which 4,321 came from Valencia Province, 5,163 from Alicante and 1,417 from Castellon. A further 52 came from other regions. Maria Such, director general of the Valencian Institute for Women, revealed that 20 per cent of the calls 1,439 - came from a family member, friend, neighbour or member of the public aware that a woman was being subjected to gender violence. The fact that a person other than the
victim herself was prepared to ring the helplines, demonstrated a greater awareness of gender violence, Such pointed out. At the beginning of the State of Alarm lockdown, the Generalitat’s Equality and Inclusive Policies department launched a campaign, publicising the helplines for gender violence victims, Such said. The campaign also called on those close to potential victims to keep an especial watch during lockdown, she added: “Many women were accompanied 24 hours a day with their abuser and had problems in calling the helplines.”

Flouters still flouting
DENIA: Flouters just can’t keep away.
THROUGHOUT last weekend, Denia’s Local Police fined those ignoring Phase 1 a n d P h a s e 2 re strictions. Fine weather encouraged visits from residents from other provinces and regions, banned during Phase One and Phase Two of Spain’s de-escalation programme. The Local Police began detecting and fining would-be tourists last Friday and contin-
ued over the weekend. Most were intercepted on the Cervantes promenade and in the Les Marines area where many second residences are located. Vehicles included a family of two adults and two children from another autonomous region unable to prove that they were living in Denia since before the State of Alarm decree, resulting in fines for the adults. The occupants of an-
other car, who did not habitually live together and were not wearing face masks, were stopped and fined as they left the motorway when the police rejected their explanation that they were picking up a friend. Neither was there sympathy for a lone swimmer at the Bovetes beach who explained that he knew this was not yet allowed but he was hot “and needed to cool down.”

Sour outlook for local fruit NINETY PER CENT of Alicante Province’s cherry crop has been lost, the Asaja agricultural growers’ union announced. The absence of casual labour, transport difficulties when lockdown was at its strictest and bad weather have ruined this year’s harvest, the union said. Cherries, together with nisperos - which have also suffered this year - are two of the province’s principal stone-fruit crops and an important source of income for inland towns and villages. Growers producing the denominationprotected Montaña de Alicante cherries said they have never seen anything like this year’s campaign, which was the worst they can remember after rain throughout April rotted the blossom. The Marina Baja’s nispero crop was affected by four or five days in early May
ALICANTE CHERRIES: Few around this year. when temperatures reached 30 degrees. With insufficient time to bring in the overripe fruit, the Marina Baja produced a total of 10,000 tons instead of the expected 13,000. Lorries taking nisperos to Italy, their principal importer, had to return empty, which raised transport costs, while the open-air markets, the usual outlet for less-than-perfect fruit, only recently reopened.
High-risk summer THE Generalitat has allocated €80 million to fighting forest fires this summer. The firefighting campaign will continue until November with 1,000 professionals trained to act once a fire is detected. The budget and number of firefighters are similar to last year’s announced Gabriela Bravo, who heads the regional government’s Interior and Justice Department. The Interior and Justice Principal also pointed out that owing to the Covid19 health crisis; more tourists were expected in
the Valencian Community’s inland and mountain areas. Meanwhile Diego Martin, director-general of the Generalitat’s Fire Prevention department, announced that another 500 people will be employed as firewatchers this summer. Martin also revealed that work continued throughout lockdown on clearing woodland paths and roads that were affected by last winter’s storms and whose good condition is vital both for preventing and controlling fires.
Police raid NATIONAL POLICE officers swooped on Elda’s Tafalera district following a tipoff that marihuana was being grown there. The raid followed confirmation by officers from the Judicial Police criminal investigation unit that the tip-off was correct, and that the growers had also made illegal water and electricity connections. This led to a search of three properties in the m a r g i n a l i s e d neighbourhood, resulting in two arrests and the confiscation of 26 kilos of marihuana buds and growing equipment. The detainees, both Spanish and both aged 61, were taken up before the judge on drugs charges as well as defrauding the energy and water supply companies.

THE Royal family of Spain held a minute of silence in honour of the victims who have passed as a result of the coronavirus crisis on the first day of national mourning. King Felipe VI, the Queen Letizia, and their two daughters, all stood outside the royal palace dressed in black with a half mast flag in the background to honour those victims lost by the coronavirus. This act of remembrance has also occurred in numerous town halls and institutions across the nation, marking the first day of national mourning in the country. Apart from this homage, all social media profiles of the royal family appear with a black crepe to symbolise mourning. The royal decree which declared a peri-
od of national mour ning entered into force on May 27 and will last until tomorrow Friday June 5. Once Spain has finished the State of
Alarm and officially entered the ‘new normality,’ King Felipe VI is expected to lead and preside a great official act in memory of the victims.
The loans will cover a maximum of six months of rent, up to €900 per month from April 1, 2020. The loan can be paid back over a period of six years, with an additional four years, if required.

By Damon Mitchell GIBRALTAR-based author, Lowri Madoc, is set to publ i s h h e r f i r s t c h i l d re n ’s book in June 2020. Euro Weekly News had the chance to speak to Lowri about the first of her six planned books ‘Hetty Backstage,’ which she says is “a semi-autobiographical children’s story about a young girl who follows her famous actor parents around the country’s theatres, TV studios and movie sets on her weekends away from boarding school.” As the daughter of two of Britain’s favourite actors, Ruth and Philip Madoc, Lowri was aware her home life was a little different from that of many of her friends at boarding school. “Growing up, my weekends and holidays were often spent backstage in theatres and on TV and film sets. So, the book actually describes
genuine scenarios.” Her parents’ work meant large parts of Lowri’s formative years were spent immersed in sitcoms, game shows, pantos and films, as well as various TV drama series. From ‘It’s a Knockout’ to ‘Dostoyevsky,’ the exposure couldn’t have been more diverse. Occasionally, but reluctantly, Lowri would be asked to get involved in front of the camera. Funny, yet usually cringey, her credits include ‘Hi-de-Hi,’ the game show ‘Whose Baby?’ and ‘This is Your Life.’ Not interested in the limelight, Lowri was however captivated by what went on backstage and onset. After many hours spent with production staff and front of LIFE ON THE ROAD: Lowri’s weekends were spent backstage in theatres and on film sets.

One factor is that the bidders have told MasMovil that they are not planning any changes in the direction of the operation, or in the management and staffing.
Free flights to thank health workers IBERIA and Vueling and airport operator AENA are giving away free air tickets to Spain’s health sector workers to thank them for everything they are doing on the coronavirus frontline. The two airlines are gifting 25,000 double air tickets each for 70 different destinations in Spain and Europe
and AENA will cover the airport taxes, because “it’s time to care for those who most care for us,” they said in a joint press statement. The tickets are for doctors, nurses, auxiliary nurses, porters, cleaners and transport staff, among others, working in hospitals, health centres and care
homes during the Covid-19 crisis. The tickets are for flights between June 22 and September 30. The health workers are free to choose the person who travels with them. Applications are via the Iberia and Vueling websites until the 15th of the month, or until the tickets run out.

Save tax in the case of double inheritances each and which has a value of about €200,000. They made Wills naming each other as heirs and then me. My father passed away in Spain 10 years ago and my mother recently in March 2020.
How should I consider the situation with regards to inheritances and probate in Spain? Should I inherit all from my mother or from my father and mother? We should say, that this question has particular significance especially in relation to the inheritance tax to be paid in Spain. Until relatively recently, the interpretation of the Spanish tax authorities was that in this case there would be two inheritances: 1) your father’s inheritance, for which your mother as heir (represented by you as she died) would inherit from your father 50 per cent of the house (€ 100,000). 2) your mother’s inheritance, for which you would inherit 100 per cent of all the assets, including those inherited by her from your father, that is, you would inherit
the whole house from your mother (€ 200,000), and you would have to pay Inheritance or Succession taxes, although in the Valencian Community, children do not pay Inheritance Tax for the first €100,000. But now, it could be understood that you have inherited directly from your father 50 per cent of the house (his part), and from your mother, her 50 per cent which means that you will not be paying inheritance taxes in Spain, as the value would be €100,000 in each inheritance The legal justification of this is found in article 1.006 of the Civil Code that establishes that: “At the death of the heir without accepting or repudiating the inheritance, the same right that he had will pass to his heirs.”
Therefore, it can be understood that if your mother never accepted your father’s inheritance, her rights to inherit will pass to you, so, you will inherit directly from your father (in the position that your mother had). This interpretation has been confirmed by the Spanish Supreme Court, which has modified its previous court precedents. So, in reality as your mother did not accept the inheritance, she did not acquire any property and therefore, there is no inheritance tax to be paid and the transfer of the right to accept your father’s inheritance (Ius Delationis) from your mother to you, does not mean that you inherit from your mother 50 per cent of the property that belonged to your father, but that you receive the right to ac-
cept the inheritance from your father on behalf of your mother. This concept is very important, so that in the case of double inheritances when an heir dies without accepting an inheritance, from the tax point of view it could represent an important inheritance tax saving, since a double transmission of inheritance is avoided, in relation with your father’s estate that would be inherited directly by you. lion, with the company having an order book of around €450 million. Bergen Engines specialises in making diesel and medium speed petrol engines for merchant ships.

basic income plan approved by the government. The scheme has been spurred on by the coronavirus pandemic, and has set the support at roughly half of the minimum wage of €1,108 per month per person. The government says that people aged between 23 and 65 years with assets of less than €16,614, which don’t include their home and certain loans, will be eligible. Deputy Prime Minister, and leader of the leftwing Podemos Party, Pablo Iglesias said: “It is a historic day for our democracy and the fact that the gover nment is going for social justice and that it takes the Constitution seriously.” The money the gover nment will hand out will depend on the number of family members, but will not go over the €1,105 monthly figures. The handout will cover around 2.3 million people in Spain at an annual cost of €3 billion.

SPAIN’S Ministry of Consumer Affairs is taking legal action against, at least, 17 different airlines in order to inform customers that they may be refunded for their cancelled flights. The head of this governmental department, Alberto Garzon, had already contacted airlines in order to get them to re-
port the rights of their travellers, after the administration received many claims stating that their rights to a refund were being denied or exchanged for alternative bonuses. The Ministry is in the process of requesting a cessation action which will be used against these malpractices as airlines
are omitting key information from passengers who have paid for tickets they can no longer enjoy, meaning they have a right to a refund. Furthermore, if any customers have been given a travel voucher without the option of a refund, they can choose to void these vouchers and claim a reimbursement instead.
Plastic Ban
IN an effort to become ecofriend l i e r, S p a i n h a s d e c i d e d i t will ban the sale of single use plastics such as disposable cutlery and plates which will begin in July of 2021. The government has decided that on July 3, 2021, and thereafter it will prohibit the sale of cotton swabs (apart from medical use), plastic cutlery, throwaway plates, plastic straws and stirrers in the Spanish marketplace. Furthermore, in order
to reduce the use of these plastics, bars and restaurants will be forced to offer free non-bottled water to clients rather than making them order a plastic one. Their objective is to reduce the commercialisation of these plastic single use products by around 50 per cent within the next six years and by 70 per cent in 2030. Instead, it will encourage the use of alternative reusable materials or eco-friendlier non-plastic materials.
A BELGIAN royal family member flouted lockdown rules in southern Spain and then tested positive for the coronavirus. Prince Joachim, who is nephew to Belgium’s King Philippe, went to a house party in Cordoba, and then tested positive afterwards for a mild form of the virus. The young royal is said to have provided the names of 27 people for contact tracing purposes. Joachim arrived in Madrid on May 24 and then took a train to Cordoba, where it is alleged he was met up with his girlfriend. The story has raised eyebrows on a couple of levels. Firstly, the party potentially broke State of Alarm rules on the number of people that could get together under one roof, though the exact number has not been made public. Secondly, Joachim was given permission to travel between different areas of Spain as he was meant to be taking up a placement with an Andalucia area

Planned CV-753 takeover THE town hall of Alfaz hopes to incorporate two kilometres of the CV-753 into the municipality’s own network of roads. Urban Development and Transport councillor Toni Such announced that the town hall has now approached Alicante’s provincial council, the Diputacion, explaining that this section of the Cami Vell d’Altea road affects three different projects inside Albir. The section in question crosses a developed residential and commercial area and ceding this would also prevent “unnecessary bureaucratic duplications,” Such said. “We also want to improve safety on the CV-753 between the Trinquet roundabout and Albir Gardens, as at present the road is not safe for pedestrians or cyclists,” the councillor added. The town hall hopes to construct 5.5-metre pavements on either side of the road as well as a cycle lane connecting with those of Benidorm’s, Such revealed.

A 12-YEAR-OLD boy in Granada sadly lost his life, at around 12.50pm on Saturday May 30, when a solar panel in Alfacar fell on top of him. Neighbours called the emergency services, warning the Public Company of Health Emergencies that the minor had been crushed by a solar panel. The accident happened on a site on Avenida Principe Felipe
de Alfacar which the Guardia Civil and Local Police have already moved all potential hazards from. The operators at the scene were only able to confirm the tragic death of a minor, who was ultimately crushed by the force of the solar panel, without disclosing any further infor mation regarding the circumstances under which the accident happened.
SHORTLY after announcing the closure of the Nissan factory in Barcelona, which effectively means letting go of 2,800 employees, many workers gathered outside the gates on Thursday, May 28, to protest and burnt tyres in hopes of sparking a reaction from Nissan. Unions have warned that they will not stand for the company’s closure plans. A Vice-President of economic affairs in Spain, Nadia Calviño, has assured that they are willing to look for “an alternative solution” to help the workers.

UN applauds Spain SPAIN has changed its policy over allowing a Moroccan girl to go to school. The UN child rights committee in Geneva said that the decision to allow the 12-year-old into a primary school in Melilla, Spain’s enclave in North Africa, was a good example in dealing with around
80 similar cases. The decision came six weeks after the UN committee asked Spain to take steps to admit the girl, who was actually born and raised in Melilla, to be admitted into the public education system. The whole issue revolved around the child and her mother being clas-
sified as ‘irregular’ residents, and so she was not allowed to access public schooling. Back in 2018, she joined other youngsters in the same position starting a two-year campaign. That included staging a weekly protest outside the Ministry of Education in Melilla.

On the run DETAINED: Four fleeing refugees.
FOUR fleeing refugees were removed from a long distance coach service between Andalucia and Barcelona for presenting symptoms of the coronavirus. They had escaped as part of a group of six North Africans from a Red Cross centre in the Gaudix area of Granada, and made their way onto the coach. National Police officers waited for the service to arrive at the San Andrés bus station in Murcia City, having received a tip off from the Guardia Civil down south that the escapees were on board.
The coach had 22 passengers on it and police officers wearing PPE safety clothing removed the four suspected virus carriers and sufferers. All of the men on the run were taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia, and it was confirmed that one of them had tested positive for the coronavirus. The coach service operated by the Alsa Company continued to head north to Catalonia, but with the infection confirmed, all of the remaining passengers and the driver faced virus testing and quarantining.

THE second largest fish in the sea, the Basking Shark, also known as a Cetorhinus maximus, has been increasingly sighted in the Mediterranean Sea as the Coronavirus and Storm Gloria have brought them ever so close to the shore. There are several reasons for their proximity and prominence, one being the vast decrease in human activity witnessed as a knock-on
effect of the health crisis. As everyone has been quarantined, there have been still waters inviting sharks to come closer to the shore where they usually stray far away from. Furthermore, Storm Gloria, experienced in January of this year could have also caused tides to shift, bringing more plankton to the area and subsequently causing sharks to drift closer.

Chop shop arrests
STOLEN VEHICLES: Scene from the ‘Chop Shop.’ AN assembly plant taking stolen vehicles in Madrid has been closed down by the National Police who estimate that the gang of seven who were involved made €600,000 from their activities. The seven men each had their own specific job and between them would steal cars to ord e r, r e m o v e p a r t s which they sold, sent remaining scrap to breakers yards and
even repaired vehicles using the parts from the stolen cars. The investigation started in February of this year when officers heard rumours of the activities of the gang working from a warehouse in the Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares and when they raided the premises, they found three stolen cars. They also discovered that some of the stolen cars weren’t, but were
owned by associates of the gang so as well as theft of genuine vehicles, there was also an insurance scam which saw two individuals (from Romania) claiming theft and receiving payment from insurance companies for cars that went through the warehouse. So far, officers have established 25 alleged criminal acts against those who were arrested.

Pablo Iglesias is the centre of attention due to his encounters with Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo in parliamentary headquarters. To l e d o d e d i c a t e d h e r speech to an attack on the P o d e m o s l e a d e r, c a l l i n g h i m a n “ i m p o s t o r, ” “ l i a r ” and “son of a terrorist.” Iglesias struck back by taking a swipe at her noble status and mockingly referring to her as a “marquise.” Álvarez de Toledo is indeed the Marquise de Casa Fuerte. Now, this is all going on whilst these “leaders” and decision-makers are supposed to be creating a way forward for Spain and

people are struggling through the economic fallout from the health crisis. The tactics are reminiscent of the days of the “two Spains” and show far more of a split than unity. Whilst this is going on Sanchez has now made clear his plan to push for a sixth and final State of Alarm. He has finally been able to make a deal with the ERC, Catalonian party who previously abstained from backing one extension and voted against other extensions. However, this deal is not only to give autonomous leaders their power back, it looks as though they may have some kind of deal in the pipeline that will benefit them over the coming months. T h e B a s q u e p a r t y , P N V, have also given the go-
ahead with their support of the State of Alarm. Sanchez said during his request on Sunday that his country needed two more weeks of lockdown until June 21 “to finish with the pandemic once and for all.” Congress were due to meet on Wednesday June 3 to vote on the extension and should it go ahead it will mean that from June 21 the State of Alar m should end and with it the lockdown, allowing residents to move freely throughout their regions and from July 1, they should be able to move throughout the whole of Spain.

Luciano lives in El Hornillo, “in my case, the impact has been positive, more family time, my wife and I have spent a lot of time playing and enjoying our baby son, I don’t normally see him this much as I work in a music shop every day. I have also dedicated my time to continue learning sound editing, video editing, and have worked on my techniques and skills on bass guitar. I have enjoyed spending more time with my dogs in the campo and it has even given me the time to learn how to cook pizzas at home!”
He is the manager of the Dirty and Happy Dog Centre situated between Quesada and Los Montesinos. The facility was totally closed during the lockdown and that brought bad and good news for him. “We had to stop helping all of the dog owners for two months, and I was on my own on the site, as I had to let two of my colleagues go during the crisis,” said Alex. “On the plus side, the spare time allowed me to set up a whole new set of kennels which once we get a licence through, will give us the

“It hasn’t been easy during the lockdown,” admitted Mallorca resident Ian Grummet. “Not being able to see people and homeschooling the kids has proved to be a challenge, but thankfully I have still been able to get out and about and work. “It’s been much harder for the children staying indoors for such a long time. “Now we are just happy and grateful to be able to see our friends and visit the beaches again.”

Michelle Johnstone, Costa del Sol Michelle and her husband Tony own the ‘Ace of Shades’ which provide shades, blinds and awnings. “We reopened at Phase 1 and up until then, our business had dropped. However, with the extra time I managed to get some confirmation on radio shows I will be working on, that are based in the UK.” Michelle pointed out what the lockdown has done for her community as she lives in a small area where there are only eight houses. “Community spirit has been pulling together, if somebody is going to the shop they get bits for the neighbours. I have been making calls to the vulnerable, just to give them somebody to talk to if they are lonely. “As people will be stuck in Spain they will need shades and mosquito nets, so business is picking up again.”

John Fenton, Costa Blanca North John, a local builder, was completely honest and said the hardest part has been losing the social side of life. “Not being able to go to the pub was defnitely hard. It’s a routine of mine really, finish work and pop into my local for a pint. “It’s not just about drinking, you catch up with everyone. For loads of people, the pub is the social hub and might be the only time they talk to anyone. I’m lucky, I’m not on my own. I feel for people who live alone, they must have felt very isolated during lockdown.
“Not being able to work was difficult for obvious reasons, and being self-employed, I didn’t earn anything. Big incentive to get back to work.”

Graham Jones spends most of the year living in Surrey in the UK, and so has had his stay extended in his holiday home in Torrevieja, since he arrived at the end of February.
“The biggest problem during the crisis has been rearranging flights to return back home and then seeing them cancelled,” said Graham, “Last month I reached the view that I was safer here than anywhere else, and if I have to stay longer, then I’m not bothered any more, especially as everything is reopening.” Like with many single people, loneliness was an issue for Graham during the lockdown. “I like my own company, but two months of it was taking it a bit far,” he chortled.

I am lucky enough that my business is in online sales so I have been able to continue earning and sticking to a day-to-day regime. A family friend from back home in Scotland sadly passed away but they had had underlying health issues and been ill for a while.” Phillipa went on to say that “I do feel positive for what is to come, I feel safer outside now and go to my usual places without major disruption, it’s a learning curve and luckily it seems to be on the up and in hand now.”
Leon Butlin, Costa Blanca South Leon Butlin lives with his partner Maria and their son Leonardo in Los Montesinos, and he says that a very positive aspect of the pandemic lockdown was that he was able to enjoy a lot more quality time with them. “I was involved in some home schooling and it was really good to be with my family,” Leon said. “It was all very much a personal upside to what’s happened over the last few months, and we almost treated it like a very long Christmas holiday.” Leon runs a hair salon and the negative aspect of the
lockdown was clear to him: “It was missing out on seeing people who are my friends, but the return to normal has been very good as my appointment book is full!”

in touch every day almost, but it’s not the same. “And I don’t have a computer, or social media, so talking on the phone is the only way to know how everyone is. “It’s funny how quickly you can get into a new routine though, I’ve been keeping busy decluttering and gardening during lockdown, and have now started venturing out a bit more, only to the shops really at the moment.”

My family own a churreria which had closed down so my father’s income was limited. “Most importantly I have found it hard to see so many people die in the middle of the 21st century by a ‘flu’ and the worst thing is that knowing the situation, the governments of many countries did not take the necessary precautionary measures to inform and make decisions at the time.” Although Jonny has been put in a difficult situation he is hopeful for the future. “As the lockdown is easing off it is giving me a chance to start applying for jobs again, in the meantime

Union asks BA for answers
THE European Union confirms that it has approved the volume of subsidies granted by Spain to electricity suppliers who operate in the Balearics, the Ca nary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla. This financial support falls under the terms of the EU Service of General Eco nomic Interest (SGEI) and is granted in order to keep electricity prices similar to those charged in mainland Spain. These subsidies may continue until 2029 except for the Balearics as a new underwater connection with the main land is due to go into service in 2025.

Can they stay longer? My husband and I have been in Spain since March 3 and planned to go back to the UK on March 17, but the lockdown happened on March 16. We were offered a new flight April 2 but that was cancelled. Now we are booked for November 10. We would prefer to stay un til then as we have our own place. Our main concern is if flights become available from July, would we have to take one? We are aware that, from March 3 to August 4, our six month period as nonresidents is up, but under the circum stances, could we legally stay until November 10? After 90 days, you must leave Spain for at least 90 days. To answer your question, the Spanish government is trying to extend the legal State of Alarm until the end of June. If they do, this would give you 90 days from then, ending in Sep tember. So it seems you must return to the UK before November.

Last week saw the release of the UK’s latest flash GDP figure, which fell by 5.8 per cent, while Germany the Eurozone’s largest economy entered a technical recession. The pound fell to a sixweek low of €1.11 against the euro, while the GBP/USD exchange rate fluctu ated between highs of $1.21 and

Meanwhile, the euro struggled
after Germany’s firstquarter GDP posted its sharpest contraction since the 2008 financial crisis. However, the euro ultimately came out on top as Germany and France moved to reopen their economies. Finally, while the US dollar initial ly benefited from rising USChina trade tensions last week (after US President Donald Trump criticised Beijing’s handling of the coron avirus) poor US retail sales data and rising risk appetite saw USD slide before the weekend. What do you need to look out for? Tuesday will see the release of the UK’s ILO Unemployment Rate report for March. The unemployment rate is ex pected to rise from 4 per cent to 4.4 per cent, a result which could keep the pound on the back foot. Bank of England (BoE) Chief Econ
omist Andy Haldane said that we could see a return to ‘80s levels of unemployment.’ USChina trade developments will continue to drive the US dollar this week. Any signs of deteriorating re lations between the two superpow ers could prove USDpositive. EUR investors will be focusing on the Eurozone’s latest PMI reports and will be looking for indications that output is starting to recover now that economies in the currency bloc are reopening. Who’d be a politician?
ONE of the many drawbacks of this virus pandemic is that due to shortages of staff, producing a column dealing with current affairs can be most difficult. (In fact the mere continuance of this EWN publication during the crisis is nothing short of a minor miracle, for which all concerned must be highly congratulated!) It does however mean that, due to articles needing to be submitted much earlier than usual, there is a danger of subject matter being ‘old news’ by the time it finds its way into print. I sincerely hope this is not the case with this week’s blurb which was submitted last Friday. It concerns the never ending onslaught of pressure on Mr Cummings to resign or be sacked from the Conservative party. To me the whole unrelenting blitz of left wing media hounding, and indeed the criticism from dissenters in his own party, seemed utterly disproportionate to the actual ‘crime’ he is supposed to have committed; particularly in the light of even more serious accusations being aimed at other political figures, including chip off the old block, Steven Kinnock, Robert Jenrick and that awful SNP
BREXIT: Remainers want to obtain a two-year extension of the transition period. whinger Ian Blackford, who allegedly drove 600 miles from London to Skye some three days after lockdown was declared. So why are the media not chomping after these other lockdown breachers in anything like the relentless fashion they have pursued Mr Cummings? Well, surprise surprise after I dug a little deeper, a word popped up that most of us would
like to consider lost in the mists of time. Yep you’ve guessed it - Brexit! It appears that while both Mr Cummings and Mr Johnson, both leading Brexiteers, were incapacitated with the Corona virus, a number of diehard remainers decided to use this uncertain period to devise a way to obtain a two-year extension of the transition period - due to be decided next month. Although the whole devious,
left wing media assisted plot, is far too complicated for these few lines, it basically meant that if Mr Cummings could be got rid of and the ‘remain’ supporting conservative MPs win a vote of no confidence against Mr Johnson, the chances of getting a two-year extension in June would be greatly enhanced. This would mean the UK would be bound by its obligations and EU international agreements for a further two years, and who knows? Over this period the undemocratic and bitter loser camp would have all that time to work on reversing the Brexit decision. Can you imagine the horror of that!? Thankfully, at the time of writing, they have not, even with the relentless badgering of their media pals, managed to oust Mr Cummings. In the light of this failure, rebel conservative remainers have stepped away from the vote of no confidence idea, knowing too well that should it have failed, their political careers would be over. Internet trolls: mad, bad and disruptive
BARRY DUKE WHEN I glanced up at the clock and saw it was 3.30am, I realised I’d spent almost three hours playing whack-a-mole with an Inter net troll called John Allman. The fool had been bombarding my Freethinker website with increasingly hysterical comments about the Core Issues Trust (CIT), the ‘gay cure’ outfit that I wrote about in my last column. He was posting comments at the rate of one a minute in support of CIT, and I was binning them just as quickly. Mainly they were lengthy repeats of comments he’d already posted on the subject a grand total of 30 - and I was fast losing patience with a man whose locomotive had clearly come off the tracks. Now the thing about trolls is that they very rarely identify themselves. They insert themselves into various discussions
TROLLS: The world has more than its fair share. with the sole aim of wreaking havoc, and having achieved their aim scuttle off to repeat their antics elsewhere. They are a problem because they have the effect of turning civil discourse in World War III, and nor mal commenters - generally levelheaded and polite - react to
trolls with language that would make a sailor swoon. This leads to another problem. Many sites such as mine have a foul language filter which automatically places comments into a moderation queue if it spots ‘naughty’ words like ‘lesbians,’ ‘Allah’ and, for some weird reason,
‘beer!’ This means I need to moderate comments every 10 minutes or so. You wouldn’t believe how angry folk get when their words of wit and wisdom are held up. But back to Allman. He’s the second of two trolls who’ve identified themselves. The first was a UK evangelist called
Bob Hutton, who got himself banned from commenting on the Freethinker as well as on my Facebook page about 10 years ago. If prizes were given for spamming, he’d get a gold medal. Neither sought to hide their identities because they both imagined they could use my site to promote their respective agendas. Allman wants the world to know that he’s against ‘the queering of schools,’ is fanatically opposed to the EU and has ambitions to be an MP for the Christian Peoples Alliance, which sounds even barmier than the Tooting Popular Front, created for the 70’s Brit sitcom ‘Citizen Smith.’ Hutton, on the other hand, has a burning desire to save all atheists from hell. I wish I could say that I wish them luck with their respective endeavours, but I don’t. The world has more than its fair share of deranged individuals and I flatly refuse to help them spread their hateful beliefs.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, I can’t help but ask how on earth can Leapy back the Prime Minister. He has changed ‘the goalposts’ to fit in with Dominic Cummings’ actions. I read the open letter from the lady whose 14-year-old son died. No comparison to Cummings’ ‘do as he thought fit,’ with total disregard for the UK citizens. I have totally lost faith in the UK government. Both Boris and Cummings should go. Moira Masson

ON Monday, May 25, police officers in Minnesota received a call to attend a ‘forgery in progress’ after a 46year-old black man, George Floyd, allegedly tried to purchase goods in a shop using a counterfeit $20 note. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers ordered Floyd out of his vehicle and cuffed him. Then he was pinned to the ground and surrounded by four officers, one of whom forced his knee into the back of Floyd’s neck. The officer’s statement said that Floyd had “physically resisted officers,” but many witnesses dispute this claim. Footage of Floyd’s detainment has already gone viral as they were streamed on Facebook Live by bystander Darnella Frazier. The video shows Floyd groaning and repeatedly struggling to say “I can’t breathe” to Derek Chauvin, the officer with his knee on Floyd’s neck. Floyd can be heard telling Chauvin: “I’m about to die. I can’t breathe. Please, the knee in my neck, I can’t breathe.” As the crowds plead with the officers to let him up as he is not resisting arrest, he eventually falls silent and stops moving, however, Chauvin defiantly does not remove his knee until the emergency services arrive. Floyd was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. A police statement states that he appeared to be in ‘medical distress,’ it did not mention that he had been pinned to the ground with the weight of a police officer crushing his airway. I am sure for a lot of people this brings to mind the case of Rodney King, who on March 3, 1991, was violently beaten by LAPD officers during an arrest for leaving the scene of an alleged crime and resisting arrest. These ‘attacks’ are separated by almost 30 years. Has mankind not evolved in the last 30 years? What have we been doing with our time? Have our heads been stuck behind laptops, phones and social media as technology advances, but our own minds, actions and beliefs do not? The four officers involved in Floyd’s killing have all been dismissed. Chauvin has since been charged with his murder. I suppose it was lucky there was somebody there with a mobile phone to record it for social media.

So many thousands of people had their flights cancelled due to Covid-19 it’s obviously not an overnight task to process the refunds, but Ryanair haven’t done themselves any favours and have exacerbated the situation by issuing vouchers in lieu of a refund when a simple email stating refunds will be issued ASAP would have calmed this very emotive issue.

Figure it out Dear Euro Weekly News, Does anybody have a clue as to what on earth has happened with the Spanish Coronavirus figures? One day it was 56 deaths in a day and then all of a sudden it’s 35 within a week. Also, there was some miscount or misinformat i o n i n v o l v i n g a d i ff e re n c e o f 2 , 0 0 0 d e a t h s . . . 2,000!! How can we put our trust in these guys if they cannot even give us the right information? By doing this it will only goad the conspiracy theorists into getting on board. I understand the French are at it too and each of their papers reports a different figure. Who can we turn to for this information, it is creating panic when all we want is reassurance. I personally think it is good advice. People in the UK are saying that the government didn’t do enough, although some people in the UK carried on without masks and then they blame the government for the high number of deaths. Now nobody seems to be wearing them.

British Expats on Spain’s Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca say they would rather stay at home than move to Phase 2 of the lockdown! I agree with them, it is too early to predict the demise of such a huge catastrophe as Covid. We live quite near to some beautiful beaches, but we can catch the sun in our garden just as easily and without any worries. I urge everyone not to be complacent too soon. xx

The Importance of being Resident in Spain CONSULAR MATTERS ONE of things that you hear mentioned in Spain is the word Residencia and Residency. A large number of foreign citizens during the Coronavirus crisis in Spain have found themselves stranded in their home country due to the fact that they did not have re s i d e n c y i n S p a i n , b u t what does it mean to be legally resident in Spain? As Danish Consul for Andalucia and Extremadura and as a lawyer I have received numerous messages from Danish citizens who wanted to retur n to Spain where they have lived for a number of years. Sadly this was not permitted by the Spanish government as they did not have residency and were there-

This is in case even if they were on the padron, had an NIE number or had paid for example property taxes here in Spain. This is the same for other citizens from for example the United Kingdom, and indeed all over the world. In Spain it is law that if you spend more than 183 days in
any year you are resident and you have to pay taxes in Spain. For citizens of the United Kingdom this is something of extreme importance as the UK is in a transition period and will leave the European Union on 31.12.20. At the time of writing no deal has been done between the EU and the UK and this means that UK citi-
zens who are not resident will be limited to stays of 90 days in a 180-day period. They will also need health insurance as the current system of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will come to an end. Of course there may be a deal, but after 30 years as a lawyer I know not to speculate. So what can be done?
Well wherever you are from, if you are living here in Spain you need to get your residency, and for UK citizens you need to be living here in Spain before 31.12.20. The Spanish government has extended the deadline to apply for residencia until June 2021 but as I said you need to be living here before the end of 2020. You will also need to take advice from a lawyer or someone suitably qualified re your tax situation and your Will, as if you are resident you can choose which law applies in the event of your death. Make sure that you take advice re taxes as depending on your particular circumstances one country may be better than another. CHARCOAL toothpaste is all the rage for tooth whitening. It is a natural solution for brighter, whiter teeth... but does it actually help? The type of charcoal you find in toothpaste is made of natural materials like wood and coconut shells that are oxidised under extreme heat to make activated charcoal. The process causes it to become more porous and in this state, it is great at absorbing toxins, stains and bacteria. Brushing with activated charcoal aids with halitosis by absorbing the bacteria that causes it. It’s gritty, like baking soda, so it can also be used
to buff the surfaces of your teeth, literally polishing them. As charcoal is abrasive it could wear down the enamel, so don’t use it every session without talking to a dentist. Also, make sure to use very fine charcoal. Activated charcoal can remove surface stains, which means if you have a coffee addiction, this might work wonders. Things like wine or tea stains can be effectively removed with charcoal toothpaste. It won’t, however, have much of an effect on stains from smoking. You’ll need a professional whitener for that.

I was taught by the best in the market MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL as a few of you enjoyed my little story last week and everyone else is still writing about Boris, Donny, round trips to Durham to have your eyes tested and the virus, I’ve decided to tell you another story. In the late 60’s and early 70’s when I was just a young whippersnapper I was travelling the UK auctioneering and demonstrating in markets, local Ideal Home exhibitions and fairgrounds. The type of goods I sold were the type that the trader made look like they were the most brilliant things ever, but when you got them home you couldn’t quite get them to work in the same way. I sold and demonstrated so many different things - non-stick frying pans (they slip, they slide, they virtually glide), knives so sharp you could saw through a tin can, then with the same knife slice a piece of bread so thin you could see daylight through it. A chopping machine for making chips and perfect salads and
everything inbetween. There was allegedly a Blackpool landlady who, with this machine, could slice a cucumber so thin she could make it last a whole summer season. I even sold ladies tights that supposedly wouldn’t ladder. All these things were made to look so easy because we practised for hours to make it look easy. One of my favourites was a carpet cleaning kit that actually was just a stick with a piece of plastic on the end with two rollers and two brushes and, of course, a ‘magic’ shampoo that could clean any stain out of any carpet. But the secret was in our preparation. The shampoo was just a very pure teepol diluted with a lot of water. We used sample carpet squares to show how great the kit was, but what nobody knew was they were soaked in shampoo overnight and left to dry. The ‘black shoe polish’ that was rubbed in was, in fact, a black washable dye soaked into a shampoo soaked sponge. I bet some of you even remember the famous ‘Reem Kleen’ Crumb Brush Table Sweeper. All of this was a fantastic introduction to the world of selling and I was taught by the best in the markets. More next week or back to being grumpy - let me know which you prefer.

These are the ones puzzled by those demanding an end to precautions when they fear that the virus is still there, there’s no available treatment, cure or vaccine as yet to

make anyone safe. The virus is still poorly understood, they feel, and nobody knows for sure how it will develop, whether antibodies might protect if someone’s had it and, if so, for how long. They’re concerned nothing’s actu-

there is lurking, they suspect, a very real problem that will manifest itself during the coming weeks. A PERFECTLY preserved ‘archeological treasure’ has been unearthed beneath vines near the city of Verona in Northern Italy. The ancient Roman mosaic was discovered by archeologists in the hills above Negrar di Valpolicella after countless decades of failed attempts. Almost a century previously, the remains of a Roman villa had been found in the area, but in 1922 the dig was abandoned. Last summer, a team from the Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Verona resumed the excavations. After halting during the coronavirus pandemic, the digging began again last week and the discovery was made. Experts say the pristine mosaic floor could date to third century AD, believed to be the date of the remains of the villa on the site. The area is still being excavated to see the full extent of the find.
