PHASING OUT
WITH the majority of Spain now having entered Phase 2 of de-escalation it is still very surprising to find that the streets are relatively quiet and the businesses that have decided to move ahead and reopen are still not receiving the custom we may have expected. Although people have been very vocal about expressing their need to get out in the streets and return to the bars and coffee shops on social media, now there seems to be some reluctance. It is understandable that residents may have some fears as to what they face outside, but many businesses have gone through extra planning and expense to make their establishments safe for you, the customer. Whether it be marking out spaces to allow social distancing, removing tables to create space, supplying sanitary products or retraining staff on new health standards, they have gone to this extra trouble not only to keep their livelihoods going but also to welcome you, the public, back to the places you enjoyed eating with your family, having a coffee and a chat with friends or enjoyed taking
the children for a day out. Many beaches are now open, you would think that in itself would have people sprinting from the homes that have imprisoned them the last couple of months, straight for the sea and the sun. Surely that’s one of the main reasons why expats have decided to relocate to Spain, chasing the sun, the relaxed Spanish lifestyle of enjoying things outdoors, tapas, paella, relaxing on the beach, things you won’t find at home. We need to trust in the Health Ministry who have said it is now a safe time for us to leave our homes. We need to give business owners hope and reassurance that their café, restaurant, bar, shop etc will succeed. So let’s get out there and show our support and start to return to a normal life. Let’s appreciate everything we moved to this beautiful country for.

One step beyond
BACK TO THE BEACH: Bathers can access the beach but should continue social distancing. A S o f M o n d a y, J u n e 1 , m a n y m o re a re a s o f Spain have been able to enjoy taking the next step into Phase Two of the country’s lockdown easing plan. In these regions, the rate of infection of the virus has now dropped to within the criteria that allow further progression through the phase system. Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa announced the good news last Thursday evening, which was a day earlier than planned. This means many rules have relaxed for residents in these areas, allowing for a continued move to-
wards a nor mal life. Although these restrictions have eased off, it is important to note that these activities must still be partaken in your own province, unless for work reasons. Shops may now open to 40 per cent capacity and shopping centres have been able to open for the first time since isolation, but with lower capacity in any areas deemed as communal. Bars and restaurants that had opened but could only use terraces can now invite customers inside as long as they stick to 50 per cent capacity and there is no bar service. Social contact has now been stretched to allow groups of 15 to meet together. However, this does still exclude anybody classed as being vulnerable, elderly or underlying health issues. When it comes to exercise residents no longer need to follow the previous timetable. But, slots of
time allocated for the vulnerable should still be adhered to. For the vast majority of people, the news that they can now go to the beach for bathing will be one of the most exciting changes. Swimming pools are also open to 30 per cent capacity and exercise gyms can open for one to one classes by appointment only, these should not include contact sports. Cinemas and theatres have reopened with reduced seating to allow for social distancing measures. As have churches which can welcome up to 50 per cent capacity. In a further move that may bolster the tourism sector hotels have been able to open communal areas but have to respect certain capacity restrictions.
Sunday market is back THE fleamarket of Nerja, which is run by the Lions Club, reopened last Sunday. In line with the central government’s directives introduced to stop the spread of coronavirus, there would be 50 stalls instead of the usual 200, explained Nerja’s Commerce councillor Javier Lopez beforehand. The number of people allowed inside the market, which was held between 9am and 2pm, was cut by two-thirds and both cus-
tomers and stallholders were reminded that masks had to be worn. Although the Sunday market reopened, the open-air market held each Tuesday will not begin trading until Malaga Province enters Phase Three or Four, depending on the conditions. This decision came from the stallholders themselves after consultations with the associations representing them, and discussions with Nerja Town Hall.
Free ride
NERJA’S local Verano Azul bus is free for the over-65s and under-12s, who need only show ID to the driver. The measure will remain in place for the duration of the State of Alarm to alleviate the Covid-19 crisis, the town hall said.

Please remember that citizens’ rights are already protected by the Withdrawal Agreement, which was ratified by the UK and the EU in January. This guarantees your rights and means that as long as you are legally resident here by the end of 2020: You will be able to continue to live and work in Spain. UK state pensioners will continue to have lifelong healthcare access as long as they remain living in Spain (this also applies to residents who claim a UK state pension in the future) and your UK state pension will continue to be uprated. Therefore, our key message remains to reg-
ister as a resident as soon as you are able. Many of you have contacted us to ask when residency appointments will be available again, given the recent coronavirus lockdown. We understand that in those provinces that have now moved into Phase 2 or 3 of the Spanish government’s de-escalation plan, some offices are opening a limited number of appointments. However, many may not have their appointment systems back up and running yet. You should keep checking the Spanish Public Administration portal (https://sede.ad ministracionespublicas.g ob.es/icpplus/index.html) to see if appointments are available in your area. The Diputacion puts its case FRANCISCO SALADO, president of the Diputacion, Malaga’s provincial council, stressed the institution’s commitment to Velez-Malaga’s Senda Litoral (Coastal Path). Meanwhile, Salado asked Velez-Malaga Town Hall to correct flaws in the three drafts that it presented to the Diputacion and to to “stop pressuring” the technicians who were supervising the project. Salado also lamented that Velez-Malaga Town Hall was attempting to cover up “five years of inactivity, immobility and obstruction.” The provincial council was unable to authorise VelezMalaga Town Hall’s proposals as these should have included geotechnical studies for the seven bridges included in the path as well as modifications

On the right road LUISA GARCIA CHAMORRO, Motril’s mayor, recently visited the Camino de Las Barreras where the town hall is carrying out improvements. Accompanied by Town Planning and Agriculture councillor Antonio Escamez, the mayor saw first-hand the new section adjoining Rambla de Villa Nueva which will improve communications for local agriculture. The cost of the €31,848 project has been covered by the Programme for the Promotion of Agricultural Employment (PFEA). Motril Town Hall has upgraded five kilometres of rural roads in under a year, pointed out Garcia Chamorro, who stressed the importance of improving access to the
area’s agricultural installations. The town hall would continue the current procedure for rural roads, which begins with approval from the Municipal Agricultural Committee, she confirmed. “It’s understood that growers and farmers themselves, together with municipal officials, should indicate which of the roads are priorities,” she said. The mayor also stressed that collaboration received from all the public administrations had made it possible to carry out the PFEA projects. “This is one of Motril’s principal sources of funding for town hall spending,” Garcia Chamorro added.

Almuñecar’s deputy mayor who is also Maintenance councillor, explained that both have been launched to simplify relations between the administration and the local population and, above all, to introduce rapid communications. “We can be contacted about issues and problems inside the municipality and users can even send us images,” Orce said. “The local government seeks to centralise notifications of defects or problems that members of the public have seen, but Aviso Directo can also be used for suggestions and recommendations.”
FIRSTHAND: Motril’s mayor visits Camino de las Barras ANDALUCIA’S Health service carried out further Covid-19 tests on Almuñecar’s Local Police and Fire Brigade. This was the second round of tests for 57 officers and firefighters following those arranged by Almuñecar Town Hall, explained Francisco Robles Rivas, the town hall’s Public Safety councillor. “These are the collectives that are most AFTER two-and-a-half months in lockdown, Nerja’s caves are no longer closed. Face masks for diabetics THE Sueño Dulce (Sweet Dreams) Association is giving out more than 2,000 face masks to Rincon de la Victoria’s diabetics. The reusable masks have been donated by the Made in Serrania face masks workshop together with the Cosas de Glucosa (Glucose things) and they are being distributed by Rincon de la Victoria’s 15 pharmacies. “We are encouraging all of the municipality’s diabetic population to obtain these masks from their nearest farmacia,” said Miguel An-

GETTING READY: Preparing for sunbathers and swimmers. ALMUÑECAR gave the go-ahead to create a Beaches Management Committee to guarantee safety now they a re i n g e n e r a l u s e again. The Comite Gestor de Playas, which will be responsible for planning and authorising the different services and activities on Amuñecar’s beaches, is composed of Almuñecar’s mayor, Trinidad Herrera and the councillors who head
the various town hall departments involved. Municipal officials are also included, together with the chiefs of the Local Police force and Proteccion Civil as well as the concessionary that provides the beaches’ lifesaving service Thirty-five lifesavers, who are currently being interviewed and selected, will be in their posts for June 12 or June 19, the town hall revealed.
A contingent of 79 beach auxiliaries who have been taken on under the Junta de Andalucia’s Employment Plan are due to arrive on June 15. “The beach auxiliaries will be assisting the Local Police in providing swimmers and beachgoers with information and keeping a check on the number of people using the beach,” Trinidad Herrera explained.

Litterbug anglers THE town hall of Salobreña has threatened to bar anglers from the beaches unless they respect the rules. Fishing from the beaches by anglers possessing a licence has been allowed between 10pm and 9am since the town entered Phase One, although with certain restrictions. As well as respecting social distancing requirements, these included a ban on sharing fishing tackle or eating and drinking utensils while anglers were asked to leave the beach clean and tidy before leaving. Some have been ignoring regulations, Salobreña Town Hall complained, sharing photos of the litter they had left behind, including an abandoned stool. Residents have also protested that others are breaking the rules by fishing during the time which is set aside for walking on the beach. “If this continues, the activity could be banned altogether,” municipal sources warned.
Don’t dump, recycle instead
PUNTO LIMPIO: Recycling made easy in Nerja. NERJA’S Punto Limpio recycling centre now opens from 7am until 9pm on weekdays and between 9am and 1pm on Saturdays. Gema Garcia, the town hall’s councillor for Municipal Services called on residents to act responsibly when ridding themselves of
furniture, mattresses and other belongings that could be recycled. “The free collection service for large household items is now functioning and can be requested by ringing the 952 548 400 Citizens’ Attention number,” Garcia said.
“Leaving these items in the street gives our municipality a bad image and complicates the rubbish collection service,” the councillor added. “I’m asking for everybody’s collaboration in helping to keep Nerja clean.”

Once Spain has finished the State of Alarm and officially entered the ‘new normality,’ King Felipe VI is expected to lead and preside a great official act in memory of the victims.
INDIVIDUALS can apply for interest and fee-free loans to cover the rent of their main residence due from April 1, 2020. The loans are expected to benefit around 450,000 families, protecting not only the landlord, but also tenants. The loans will be backed by the government’s Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), through the country’s SPAIN has changed its policy over allowing a Moroccan girl to go to school. The UN child rights committee in Geneva said that the decision to allow the 12year-old into a primary school in Melilla, Spain’s enclave in North Africa, was a good example in dealing with around 80 similar cases. Right to refund SPAIN’S Ministry of Consumer Affairs is taking legal action against, at least, 17 different airlines in order to inform customers that they may be refunded for their cancelled flights. The head of this governmental department, Alberto Garzon, had already contacted airlines in order to get them to report the rights of their travellers, after the ad-
ministration received many claims stating that their rights to a refund were being denied or exchanged for alternative bonuses. The Ministry is in the process of requesting a cessation action which will be used against these malp r a c t i c e s a s a i r l i n e s are omitting key information from passengers who have paid for tickets they
can no longer enjoy, meaning they have a right to a refund. Furthermore, if any customers have been given a travel voucher without the option of a refund, they can choose to void these vouchers and claim a reimbursement instead.
Plastic Ban IN an effort to become eco-friendlier, Spain has decided it will ban the sale of single use plastics such as disposable cutlery and plates which will begin in July of 2021. The government has decided that on July 3, 2021, and thereafter it will prohibit the sale of cotton swabs (apart from medical use), plastic cutlery, throwaway plates, plastic straws and stirrers in the Spanish marketplace. Furthermore, in order to reduce the use of these plastics, bars and restaurants will be forced to offer free non-bottled water to clients rather than making them order a plastic one. Their objective is to reduce the commercialisation of these plastic single use products by around 50 per cent within the next six years and by 70 per cent in 2030. Instead, it will encourage the use of alternative reusable materials or ecofriendlier non-plastic materials.

MACAQUES: You can look but you mustn’t touch.
THE Gibraltar government has always taken the view that whilst it encourages visitors to enjoy seeing and to a limited extent interacting with the Barbary macaques, it has discouraged them f ro m t o u c h i n g o r otherwise interfering with macaque natural behaviour.
The official line is that not only does it prejudice their health and social structure, but macaques are prone to succumb to human disease. There is of course the legend that should Gibraltar lose its macaque population then Britain in tur n would lose the Rock, so there may be an el-
ement of self-protection in this decision. The government has therefore published a Bill to amend the Animals Act which will make touching or other inter ference with the natural behaviour of macaques an offence except under licence for management, research or veterinary purposes.
Chop shop arrests
STOLEN VEHICLES: Scene from the ‘Chop Shop.’ AN assembly plant taking stolen vehicles in Madrid has been closed down by the National Police who estimate that the gang of seven who were involved made €600,000 from their activities. The seven men each had their own specific job and between them would steal cars to order, remove parts which they sold, sent remaining scrap to breakers yards and even re-
paired vehicles using the parts from the stolen cars. The investigation started in February of this year when officers heard rumours of the activities of the gang working from a warehouse in the Madrid suburb of Alcala de Henares and when they raided the premises, they found three stolen cars. They also discovered that some of the stolen cars weren’t, but were
owned by associates of the gang so as well as theft of genuine vehicles, there was also an insurance scam which saw two individuals (from Romania) claiming theft and receiving payment from insurance companies for cars that went through the warehouse. So far, officers have established 25 alleged criminal acts against those who were arrested.

By Damon Mitchell GIBRALTAR-based author, Lowri Madoc, is set to publ i s h h e r f i r s t c h i l d re n ’s book in June 2020. Euro Weekly News had the chance to speak to Lowri about the first of her six planned books ‘Hetty Backstage,’ which she says is “a semi-autobiographical children’s story about a young girl who follows her famous actor parents around the country’s theatres, TV studios and movie sets on her weekends away from boarding school.” As the daughter of two of Britain’s favourite actors, Ruth and Philip Madoc, Lowri was aware her home life was a little different from that of many of her friends at boarding school. “Growing up, my weekends and holidays were often spent backstage in theatres and on TV and film sets. So, the book actually describes
genuine scenarios.” Her parents’ work meant large parts of Lowri’s formative years were spent immersed in sitcoms, game shows, pantos and films, as well as various TV drama series. From ‘It’s a Knockout’ to ‘Dostoyevsky,’ the exposure couldn’t have been more diverse. Occasionally, but reluctantly, Lowri would be asked to get involved in front of the camera. Funny, yet usually cringey, her credits include ‘Hi-de-Hi,’ the game show ‘Whose Baby?’ and ‘This is Your Life.’ Not interested in the limelight, Lowri was however captivated by what went on backstage and onset. After many hours spent with production staff and front of
house teams, it was little wonder she chose a career in stage management and then theatre management. Lowri is a first-time writer and thinks she has started a “whole new chapter” of her life. “I have enjoyed using the isolation period to do something creative and also got Mum involved to

Free flights to thank health workers IBERIA and Vueling and airport operator AENA are giving away free air tickets to Spain’s health sector workers to thank them for everything they are doing on the coronavirus frontline. The two airlines are gifting 25,000 double air tickets each for 70 different destinations in Spain and Europe and AENA will cover the airport taxes, because “it’s time to care for those who most care for us,” they said in a joint press statement. Pablo Iglesias is the centre of attention due to his encounters with Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo in parliamentary headquarters. Union asks BA for answers
THE European Union confirms that it has approved the volume of subsidies granted by Spain to electricity suppliers who operate in the Balearics, the Ca nary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla. This financial support falls under the terms of the EU Service of General Eco nomic Interest (SGEI) and is granted in order to keep electricity prices similar to those charged in mainland Spain. These subsidies may continue until 2029 except for the Balearics as a new underwater connection with the main land is due to go into service in 2025.

We are aware that, from March 3 to August 4, our six month period as nonresidents is up, but under the circum stances, could we legally stay until November 10? If they do, this would give you 90 days from then, ending in Sep tember. So it seems you must return to the UK before November.

Last week saw the release of the UK’s latest flash GDP figure, which fell by 5.8 per cent, while Germany the Eurozone’s largest economy entered a technical recession. The pound fell to a sixweek low of €1.11 against the euro, while the GBP/USD exchange rate fluctu ated between highs of $1.21 and

Brexit trade talks. Sterling stumbled after David Frost, Britain’s chief Brexit negotiator, said that the two sides had made ‘very little’ progress. Last Wednesday also saw a slew of dire UK economic data, with UK growth falling in the flash estimate for the first quarter. Many analysts believe that the secondquarter will be far worse. Meanwhile, the euro struggled
after Germany’s firstquarter GDP posted its sharpest contraction since the 2008 financial crisis. However, the euro ultimately came out on top as Germany and France moved to reopen their economies. Finally, while the US dollar initial ly benefited from rising USChina trade tensions last week (after US President Donald Trump criticised Beijing’s handling of the coron avirus) poor US retail sales data and rising risk appetite saw USD slide before the weekend. What do you need to look out for? Tuesday will see the release of the UK’s ILO Unemployment Rate report for March. The unemployment rate is ex pected to rise from 4 per cent to 4.4 per cent, a result which could keep the pound on the back foot. Bank of England (BoE) Chief Econ
omist Andy Haldane said that we could see a return to ‘80s levels of unemployment.’ USChina trade developments will continue to drive the US dollar this week. Luciano lives in El Hornillo, “in my case, the impact has been positive, more family time, my wife and I have spent a lot of time playing and enjoying our baby son, I don’t normally see him this much as I work in a music shop every day. I have also dedicated my time to continue learning sound editing, video editing, and have worked on my techniques and skills on bass guitar. I have enjoyed spending more time with my dogs in the campo and it has even given me the time to learn how to cook pizzas at home!”
He is the manager of the Dirty and Happy Dog Centre situated between Quesada and Los Montesinos. The facility was totally closed during the lockdown and that brought bad and good news for him. “We had to stop helping all of the dog owners for two months, and I was on my own on the site, as I had to let two of my colleagues go during the crisis,” said Alex. “On the plus side, the spare time allowed me to set up a whole new set of kennels which once we get a licence through, will give us the

“It hasn’t been easy during the lockdown,” admitted Mallorca resident Ian Grummet. “Not being able to see people and homeschooling the kids has proved to be a challenge, but thankfully I have still been able to get out and about and work. “It’s been much harder for the children staying indoors for such a long time. “Now we are just happy and grateful to be able to see our friends and visit the beaches again.”

Michelle Johnstone, Costa del Sol Michelle and her husband Tony own the ‘Ace of Shades’ which provide shades, blinds and awnings. “We reopened at Phase 1 and up until then, our business had dropped. However, with the extra time I managed to get some confirmation on radio shows I will be working on, that are based in the UK.” Michelle pointed out what the lockdown has done for her community as she lives in a small area where there are only eight houses. “Community spirit has been pulling together, if somebody is going to the shop they get bits for the neighbours. I have been making calls to the vulnerable, just to give them somebody to talk to if they are lonely. “As people will be stuck in Spain they will need shades and mosquito nets, so business is picking up again.”

John Fenton, Costa Blanca North John, a local builder, was completely honest and said the hardest part has been losing the social side of life. “Not being able to go to the pub was defnitely hard. It’s a routine of mine really, finish work and pop into my local for a pint. “It’s not just about drinking, you catch up with everyone. For loads of people, the pub is the social hub and might be the only time they talk to anyone. I’m lucky, I’m not on my own. I feel for people who live alone, they must have felt very isolated during lockdown.
“Not being able to work was difficult for obvious reasons, and being self-employed, I didn’t earn anything. Big incentive to get back to work.”

Graham Jones spends most of the year living in Surrey in the UK, and so has had his stay extended in his holiday home in Torrevieja, since he arrived at the end of February.
“The biggest problem during the crisis has been rearranging flights to return back home and then seeing them cancelled,” said Graham, “Last month I reached the view that I was safer here than anywhere else, and if I have to stay longer, then I’m not bothered any more, especially as everything is reopening.” Like with many single people, loneliness was an issue for Graham during the lockdown. “I like my own company, but two months of it was taking it a bit far,” he chortled.

I am lucky enough that my business is in online sales so I have been able to continue earning and sticking to a day-to-day regime. A family friend from back home in Scotland sadly passed away but they had had underlying health issues and been ill for a while.” Phillipa went on to say that “I do feel positive for what is to come, I feel safer outside now and go to my usual places without major disruption, it’s a learning curve and luckily it seems to be on the up and in hand now.”
Leon Butlin, Costa Blanca South Leon Butlin lives with his partner Maria and their son Leonardo in Los Montesinos, and he says that a very positive aspect of the pandemic lockdown was that he was able to enjoy a lot more quality time with them. “I was involved in some home schooling and it was really good to be with my family,” Leon said. “It was all very much a personal upside to what’s happened over the last few months, and we almost treated it like a very long Christmas holiday.” Leon runs a hair salon and the negative aspect of the
lockdown was clear to him: “It was missing out on seeing people who are my friends, but the return to normal has been very good as my appointment book is full!”

I’ve got a seven-year-old daughter, so needed to be at home for her anyway, and it has been special having extra time together. “But I have felt very anx-

Suzi said: “We have been quite lucky in that respect, being able to work for much of the lockdown, taking all the necessary precautions, obviously. “The biggest challenge for us has been keeping our three children occupied. They are aged eight to 16 and have had to do their homework, which they haven’t wanted to do, so it’s been a case of bribing them to get it done and then we can do fun things, quizzes, making cakes, that sort of thing. “I think we will all appreciate the little things more now, even just going out for a walk together.”

in touch every day almost, but it’s not the same. “And I don’t have a computer, or social media, so talking on the phone is the only way to know how everyone is. “It’s funny how quickly you can get into a new routine though, I’ve been keeping busy decluttering and gardening during lockdown, and have now started venturing out a bit more, only to the shops really at the moment.”

My family own a churreria which had closed down so my father’s income was limited. “Most importantly I have found it hard to see so many people die in the middle of the 21st century by a ‘flu’ and the worst thing is that knowing the situation, the governments of many countries did not take the necessary precautionary measures to inform and make decisions at the time.” Although Jonny has been put in a difficult situation he is hopeful for the future. “As the lockdown is easing off it is giving me a chance to start applying for jobs again, in the meantime
I can help my dad with his business as they have luckily been able to reopen and it is rewarding helping my family with their livelihood.”

Who’d be a politician?
ONE of the many drawbacks of this virus pandemic is that due to shortages of staff, producing a column dealing with current affairs can be most difficult. (In fact the mere continuance of this EWN publication during the crisis is nothing short of a minor miracle, for which all concerned must be highly congratulated!) It does however mean that, due to articles needing to be submitted much earlier than usual, there is a danger of subject matter being ‘old news’ by the time it finds its way into print. I sincerely hope this is not the case with this week’s blurb which was submitted last Friday. It concerns the never ending onslaught of pressure on Mr Cummings to resign or be sacked from the Conservative party. To me the whole unrelenting blitz of left wing media hounding, and indeed the criticism from dissenters in his own party, seemed utterly disproportionate to the actual ‘crime’ he is supposed to have committed; particularly in the light of even more serious accusations being aimed at other political figures, including chip off the old block, Steven Kinnock, Robert Jenrick and that awful SNP

So why are the media not chomping after these other lockdown breachers in anything like the relentless fashion they have pursued Mr Cummings? Well, surprise surprise after I dug a little deeper, a word popped up that most of us would
like to consider lost in the mists of time. Yep you’ve guessed it - Brexit! It appears that while both Mr Cummings and Mr Johnson, both leading Brexiteers, were incapacitated with the Corona virus, a number of diehard remainers decided to use this uncertain period to devise a way to obtain a two-year extension of the transition period - due to be decided next month. Although the whole devious,
left wing media assisted plot, is far too complicated for these few lines, it basically meant that if Mr Cummings could be got rid of and the ‘remain’ supporting conservative MPs win a vote of no confidence against Mr Johnson, the chances of getting a two-year extension in June would be greatly enhanced. This would mean the UK would be bound by its obligations and EU international agreements for a further two years, and who knows? Over this period the undemocratic and bitter loser camp would have all that time to work on reversing the Brexit decision. Can you imagine the horror of that!? Thankfully, at the time of writing, they have not, even with the relentless badgering of their media pals, managed to oust Mr Cummings. In the light of this failure, rebel conservative remainers have stepped away from the vote of no confidence idea, knowing too well that should it have failed, their political careers would be over. The Importance of being Resident in Spain CONSULAR MATTERS ONE of things that you hear mentioned in Spain is the word Residencia and Residency. A large number of foreign citizens during the Coronavirus crisis in Spain have found themselves stranded in their home country due to the fact that they did not have re s i d e n c y i n S p a i n , b u t what does it mean to be legally resident in Spain? As Danish Consul for Andalucia and Extremadura and as a lawyer I have received numerous messages from Danish citizens who wanted to retur n to Spain where they have lived for a number of years. Sadly this was not permitted by the Spanish government as they did not have residency and were there-

fore not allowed to enter Spain at the moment. This is in case even if they were on the padron, had an NIE number or had paid for example property taxes here in Spain. This is the same for other citizens from for example the United Kingdom, and indeed all over the world. In Spain it is law that if you spend more than 183 days in
any year you are resident and you have to pay taxes in Spain. For citizens of the United Kingdom this is something of extreme importance as the UK is in a transition period and will leave the European Union on 31.12.20. At the time of writing no deal has been done between the EU and the UK and this means that UK citi-
zens who are not resident will be limited to stays of 90 days in a 180-day period. They will also need health insurance as the current system of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will come to an end. Of course there may be a deal, but after 30 years as a lawyer I know not to speculate. So what can be done?
Well wherever you are from, if you are living here in Spain you need to get your residency, and for UK citizens you need to be living here in Spain before 31.12.20. The Spanish government has extended the deadline to apply for residencia until June 2021 but as I said you need to be living here before the end of 2020. You will also need to take advice from a lawyer or someone suitably qualified re your tax situation and your Will, as if you are resident you can choose which law applies in the event of your death. Make sure that you take advice re taxes as depending on your particular circumstances one country may be better than another. OFTEN people who hoard things tend to keep meticulous records of events. As somebody who collected everything, until a Damascene moment well into my 70’s, I kept a record of a l l m y f l i g h t s f ro m m y maiden one to Jersey in 1960. Some years ago, I had a massive de-clutter. There were school reports, exam papers, cigarette cards, children’s books, toys, comics, magazines, books, football and concert programmes, dinky toys, bus and train tickets, airline tickets, 78 and LP records, CDs, travel souvenirs, photographs, paintings, coins, stamps, hotel stationery, letters of employment and love letters. Suddenly almost everything had to go. After years of extensive business travel, I had made 730 flights but, if you included

WHEN do disagreements turn from heated debates into abuse? It’s something I’ve given thought to after an odd experience. I feel quite strongly about injustice to others. I am vocal and Quite Frankly, it sometimes gets me into trouble! If someone expresses an opinion that I find abhorrent, I find it extremely hard not to challenge it. I used to be involved with a few online anti-fascist groups, but I haven’t bothered with them for some time. It goes back to the days of the BNP, who are now virtually obsolete. The likes of Tommy Robinson and Britain First had their social media platforms removed too, so it seems a little futile these days. I always felt prejudice

I kept a record of the date, origin, destination and flight number, whilst also saving the tickets. Apart from keeping a diary, I recorded very little else.
The point is that this is nothing compared with the records kept by Rodney and Philip. Rod was a colleague from the same fir m in London in the early 60’s. In both senses of the word he was lothario in extremis, seducing any attractive woman who crossed his path. Rod’s ambition was
to explore the delights offered by every nation on the planet. He was not averse to satisfying two Italian girls in a week, but any opportunity to tick off a ‘new’ country would take precedence. And when he hosted a small party he showed everybody his two maps on the wall. Most of the countries on the map of Europe were shaded in. Poland, and Switzerland were blank which meant that he had not yet achieved a conquest from either of those countries. The map of the world had little drawing pins stuck into various countries, including Japan, Mexico and the Philippines. But Colombia and New Zealand were bare; no joy from there - yet. Had Rod lived on the Isle of Skye rather than in London, this exercise may have presented a greater challenge. Philip, on the other hand,

A few weeks into lockdown, the editor suggested that I write about my condition - Asperger’s. Something positive to read in difficult times, and for readers to get to know me. I had no problem with it because I’m an open person. I also thought it might help someone who’s struggling, like I once did. Then it came, because of previous disagreements about politics, I think. It was only a handful of people online, but these are the types of things that were said after publication: “You wrote this for sympathy” and “go away and take your medication.” I pointed out that I don’t even

self and your Autism.” I was also randomly called a “t**t” for writing about Autistic empathy, bizarre! This is the first time it’s happened and it’s an eye opener. I talked about it with a friend and he said it’s Ableist abuse. Is it? I’ve

Even something you have absolutely no control over - like your race, gender, disability, sexual orientation etc? Then something reminded of an incident with Leapy Lee about a year ago. We’re probably the complete opposites. He wrote an article that angered me and after a debate, I brought his age into it. Is that acceptable? He has control over his opinions, but not his age. I’ve also mocked Tommy Robinson in the past, because he’s very small. Is that acceptable? Even though I find his bullying ways and bigotry repugnant? Probably not. It’s made me think about how I’ve been guilty of prejudice myself. By mocking someone’s age or height. When I had
my Autism questioned and mocked, my first thought was “my God, what if someone else with a condition is reading - it’ll put them off being open.” Well, the same goes for bringing a person’s height or age into a public debate - it could make others who are the same feel inferior. You’re dragging innocent peoples’ feelings into it. So, lessons have been learned! Well, as I’m writing this news is coming in that another unarmed black man in America has died after a brutal arrest. My experience of prejudice, if it was that, seems to pale into insignificance now. Poor man. People question why Black Lives Matter needs to exist too! As a society we still have a long way to go with acceptance. RIP George Floyd. I hope lessons are learned from your death, especially from the man at the top - Trump, who has always seemed to excuse racism.

Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL as a few of you enjoyed my little story last week and everyone else is still writing about Boris, Donny, round trips to Durham to have your eyes tested and the virus, I’ve decided to tell you another story. In the late 60’s and early 70’s when I was just a young whippersnapper I was travelling the UK auctioneering and demonstrating in markets, local Ideal Home exhibitions and fairgrounds. The type of goods I sold were the type that the trader made look like they were the most brilliant things ever, but when you got them home you couldn’t quite get them to work in the same way. I sold and demonstrated so many different things - non-stick frying pans (they slip, they slide, they virtually glide), knives so sharp you could saw through a tin can, then with the same knife slice a piece of bread so thin you could see daylight through it. A chopping machine for making chips and perfect salads and
everything inbetween. There was allegedly a Blackpool landlady who, with this machine, could slice a cucumber so thin she could make it last a whole summer season. I even sold ladies tights that supposedly wouldn’t ladder. All these things were made to look so easy because we practised for hours to make it look easy. One of my favourites was a carpet cleaning kit that actually was just a stick with a piece of plastic on the end with two rollers and two brushes and, of course, a ‘magic’ shampoo that could clean any stain out of any carpet. But the secret was in our preparation. The shampoo was just a very pure teepol diluted with a lot of water. We used sample carpet squares to show how great the kit was, but what nobody knew was they were soaked in shampoo overnight and left to dry. The ‘black shoe polish’ that was rubbed in was, in fact, a black washable dye soaked into a shampoo soaked sponge. I bet some of you even remember the famous ‘Reem Kleen’ Crumb Brush Table Sweeper. All of this was a fantastic introduction to the world of selling and I was taught by the best in the markets. More next week or back to being grumpy - let me know which you prefer.

Get Out Of Your Own Way It’s Time to Take Responsibility
I AM not one of those mentors who tells you your life will be perfect and full of roses, I don’t stroke your ego and tell you how wonderful you are on a daily basis. What’s the point in that? Does it help you overcome your negative mind-set? No! It actually enhances it. If you want sympathy, im not the girl for you. I empathise, I support, I care but I also kick your a*se and teach you how to overcome your current thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Let’s take the current situation we are all in at the moment. Lockdown can be hard for some and I totally get it. You’re lead by fear, by uncertainty and you don’t know what to do. That is fine. None has ever experienced this before therefore, our thoughts can become erratic. We create scenarios in our mind that you convince yourself to be true. But ask yourself; Is this how you want to stay? Do you want to live the rest of your life in fear? Do you want to feel anxious about stepping outside of your
front door? Do you want to feel anger when you read the latest update? I’m pretty certain that the answer is no! So what will you do? Some people love to live on Negative Street. They thrive on other people’s sympathy and have no interest in change. They’re offered help, but decline it each time. If that’s you, that’s fine. If that is how you choose to live, that is entirely up to you, but please be prepared that people in your circle will outgrow you. There are others who live with a negative mind-set and are unsure how to get out of it. I hear you! I too was little miss negative pants. I knew I needed help but was ashamed to ask. I felt it meant i was admitting to failure. I was wrong and if you are feeling like that, you are wrong too! Asking for help shows strength and courage. It’s telling you that you want to live a better life, you want to feel at peace and be happy, but you have to get out of your own way, take responsi-

bility for your actions and physically take that step. You can’t tell yourself you need help and then do nothing about it. You can’t convince yourself you’ll do it tomorrow because tomorrow never comes. If not now, when? That’s what i tell people who initially contact me and say I will do it soon or maybe next week. If you’re not willing to change, nothing will change. You will blink and all of a sudden you’re in your 80s, looking back and saying to yourself I wished I had taken action. Is this how you want to remember your life? Do you want to have regrets? Do you want to feel disappointed with your actions? Or do you want the chance to set yourself free? BEEN in lockdown too long, hardly seen anyone in that time? Maybe you’ve got FOGO (fear of going out), an inc re a s i n g s o c i a l a n d mental anxiety based as much on fear of raising the R rate above one as on just not really knowing how to be around other people, trusting them, any more. As regards the UK, maybe the ‘Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives' lockdown message mantra was ‘too successful’ and left people scared to go out? For some time, class British WhatsApp groups have been at logger heads whether or not children should go back to school as early as June - some parents still determined to keep them at home. Like those still fortunate to have jobs, they’re worried that reopening too
fast and too soon might lead to a second wave of infection. These are the ones puzzled by those demanding an end to precautions when they fear that the virus is still there, there’s no available treatment, cure or vaccine as yet to make anyone safe. The virus is still poorly understood, they feel, and nobody knows for sure how it will develop, whether antibodies might protect if someone’s had it and, if so, for how long. They’re concerned nothing’s actually changed, apart from people’s intolerance of lockdown restrictions, and wherever precautions are dropped, the situation will return to the status quo with more infections. Behind the continuing uncertainty there is lurking, they suspect, a very real problem that will manifest itself during the coming weeks. The whole world may find itself dividing
into the isolators and the ‘couldn’t care less’ folk with a great deal of tension between the two groups. Add to the mix governments and media who either intentionally or unintentionally issue contradictory guidance and commentary and you have a volatile brew. Is it FOGO or is it really HONGO (happiness of not going out)? Or maybe it should just be FOG fear of government (making rules and flouting them. Yes, Dominic, I’m looking at you!). I WAS contacted recently by a magazine, asking if I’d consider doing an ‘At Home’ feature, for an upcoming issue. In the past, I was pretty social, with my antics appearing in various magazines and newspaper columns. Let’s say, I was young and enthusiastic. Lately, I tend to enjoy a more private life. So, even though the girl from the publication was extremely sweet, and almost convincing, I had to say I’d think about it. The idea took me by surprise. With current social distancing rules, how could we possibly do the photoshoot? Aren’t we still in lockdown? Is the idea of this feature considered ‘essential’? Over the years, I’ve been asked to do similar interviews, for newspapers, TV, and magazines, so I know the level of work required. One that stands out, is a fun shoot for Social & Personal magazine. An Irish lifestyle bible, that’s a firm favourite with those who live a fashionable existence. When they asked, it was a no brainer. Apart from being a much respected publication, I also have a long affiliation with it, as at one point, I was the Social Editor. My home at the time in Dublin, was a fantastic mews house, just off Fitzwilliam Square. A place suited to hosting parties, and over the years, featured in a number of interior design publications. Anyhow, on the morning of the shoot, I decided that in order to make things per fect, a dog was required. A friend offered to loan me their one-year-old Dalmatian, Dior. A hyperactive beauty, much like most people I know, she bounded up the stairs and straight onto my, just arranged, silk sofa. Her presence was noticed by the magazine stylist. I can still recall his facial expression, as cushions went to the floor. While the photographer attempted to capture beautiful photos, Dior became a diva. Clambering over tables, knocking picture frames and such, it was difficult to calm her. Short of hopping in the bath, she really was the star. A few hours later, I was exhausted from it all. Due to reunite pooch and owner, at a chic, Italian restaurant, I chose to walk the distance. Approaching bustling Grafton street, I noticed my companion getting nervous. Meanwhile, I was stressed, as people stopped us to
DIOR: Her presence was noticed. take photos. There was only one thing for it - I made a dash for the stylish doors of Brown Thomas. The Grande Dame of fashionable Dublin, selling Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana and such necessities, it felt the perfect place for a girl named Dior. In air-conditioned bliss, elegant shoppers stared, with a mix of awe and disbelief, as a security guard walked us through, and out a side door. With Dior almost strutting, we stopped briefly at Louis Vuitton, to look at sunglasses. Soon after, the magazine was published, and met with applause, mainly by fans of beautiful Dior. I guess it’s true what they say, a dog makes a home. As the last week rolled on, I thought about the importance of print publications. Over half my life has involved them, and each month I look forward to my delivery of must read magazines. Call me old fashioned, but I just don’t find the same pleasure with online. To escape with a magazine is something I treasure. I travel a lot (or used to), and my favourite part of the journey, is having time to catch up on some escapism without interruption. So, realising it’s an honour to be asked, I think I’ll say yes to the magazine request. However, not until after the summer. From experience, heat and photo-shoots don’t mix well. This time I have no need to borrow a dog, as I get a strong feeling my Jack Russell, Henry, would be more than happy to take this leading role. That said, please excuse me as I’m heading to the pool with Vanity Fair, and a cold Aperol Spritz. When you’re at the store, pick up a magazine and treat yourself to some you time. For me, it’s important that we keep so many creative people, well, creative. And for me, it will always be print, over App.

CHARCOAL toothpaste is all the rage for tooth whitening. It is a natural solution for brighter, whiter teeth... but does it actually help? The type of charcoal you find in toothpaste is made of natural materials like wood and coconut shells that are oxidised under extreme heat to make activated charcoal. The process causes it to become more porous and in this state, it is great at absorbing toxins, stains and bacteria. Brushing with activated charcoal aids with halitosis by absorbing the bacteria that causes it. It’s gritty, like baking soda, so it can also be used
to buff the surfaces of your teeth, literally polishing them. As charcoal is abrasive it could wear down the enamel, so don’t use it every session without talking to a dentist. Also, make sure to use very fine charcoal. Activated charcoal can remove surface stains, which means if you have a coffee addiction, this might work wonders. Things like wine or tea stains can be effectively removed with charcoal toothpaste. It won’t, however, have much of an effect on stains from smoking. You’ll need a professional whitener for that.
WORKING from home can be tough, so how can you keep motivated? If you keep putting things off then the ‘Eat the frog’ method might be for you. This productivity method came from a quote by Mark Twain: ‘Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.’ In other words, schedule tasks from hardest to easiest and everything else will seem so much easier. If you are more visual, divide your tasks int o c a t e g o r i e s : To D o , Doing, and Done. Arrange them in a visual way; like post-its on a white board and

EAT DON’T KISS: Nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day. make sure you check it regularly and remove when complete. If you’re trying to create achievable goals, you could try the timeboxing method which allots specific time slots for specific work in your daily plan.
Split up your day into blocks of time with specific tasks; like dedicating a block to answering emails instead of interrupting yourself while you’re in the middle of writing a proposal because your sister called.
HOW many times have we heard the words “But you don’t look like someone with a mental illness” … “ Gosh I didn’t know you were Bipolar” ... “What have you got to be depressed for, your life is great!” “Oh sh*t, sorry. I forgot my pink neon mental illness sign at home today, I will make sure to wear it tomorrow!” (little bit of sarcasm to lighten the mood up) Why is it that to be taken seriously, to be listened to people think that you need to look ill? Sometimes a mental illnesses can show physically, of course, like the appearance of somebody struggling with eating disorders or scars made through selfharm. But so much of the time there is nothing physically wrong to see, and you would never know! We have a special super power to hide behind a smile or a laugh, to carry on as normal in front of people and to take the mask off when we are alone. As someone who has self-harmed on and off since the age of 13 years old and now fast approaching 29 - my body is covered in the giveaway marks that cannot be mistaken for anything other than self-harm. But yes, I still feel the need to lie sometimes when someone asks ... “What happened to your arm?” …. “Oh I scratched it whilst gardening at the weekend!”... I have had my fair share of stares, and looks of horror, fear and disgust. The thing about my self-harm though, is not punishment, I don’t feel the need to punish myself, for me it’s a form of release. When you are in such a dark place and you feel numb, to inflict pain is a way of feeling alive and feeling SOME-
THING! It does become highly addictive, once you start it is very hard to stop. It will be nine months this week since I last self-harmed, the thought of it creeps up on me every time I have a slip, but I find distraction straight away and try to fight the urge to inflict physical pain on myself but all of my scars from over the years are still there… still visible… so, to have them pointed out to me, is yet another reminder of the struggle I have to live with every day! Then ignorance sets in. I also struggle with depression, and regular suicidal thoughts, as well as having crippling anxiety (as if all the rest wasn't enough!). If any of this is mentioned, people will look me up and down, with puzzled expressions on their faces, before announcing, “well, I would have never of known, you carry it so well.” But what they fail to understand is that to be ill, you don’t need to look sick. I believe that there is such a risk nowadays that any type of mental illness will not be taken seriously, due to the misconception that people who look okay are okay, and I really hope that people begin to realise that saying to somebody who is ill that they “look fine” or “You’ve got it all, just cheer up” can demean that person and their illness, and prevent them from seeking the help that they need. I also wanted to show anyone who may be struggling that they should not feel as though they do not deserve to be listened to because they aren’t “ill enough” or “look ill.” I really hope that this article encourages people to ask for help as early as possible, and that they will reach out to others so they do not have to suffer alone. I also hope that others reading this will look at the person next to them and just BE KIND, because we never know what someone may be going through! I WAS never going to be anything but an entertainer. The stage beckoned me as a child and once I’d had a taste of it I was away! I come from a stagey family. My grandfather was what they call a television icon. His name was Bernard Youens and he played the part of Stan Ogden in Coronation Street for over 20 years. It meant that we didn’t get to see a great deal of him because back in those days they had to learn all their lines as though it was being performed in a theatre. These days they have a read-through of the script and then record each part with lots of cuts so the learning process is much easier. Why I am telling you all this? Well, Grandad died back in 1984 but people still remember him with a lot of affection, so much so, that he is featured on the latest second class stamp in the UK.

When I saw the news on the internet I was delighted. It is
such an honour to see his face, along with Jean Alexander (Hil-
da Ogden) on a stamp. My mother was delighted.
I had some postcards made up for her of the stamp so that she could send them to her friends and family. It could have been a different story. When Coronation Street started, grandad was offered a different role in the show. He was given the part of landlady, Annie Walker’s husband, Jack, which he turned down because Corrie was originally only going to be a 13-part series. He was the TV announcer for Granada TV at the time. It was a well-paid and steady job and he had five kids to feed. The show never came off the air and four years later they offered him the part of the lovable layabout Stan Ogden. If he had taken that first part in the show, he would never have been the Icon that he is and would never have been on that stamp all those years after he has passed on.
The Med… Sudocrem for the Soul plagued me in the night. Gone the thoughts of summary executions or exile and creeping stealthily in through the window enter rationality and reasonableness dreaded twins of common sense. Human beings need to rant and rave (my favourite twins). It is our way of making sense of difficult emotions and of opening the safety valve so that we do not implode. For a safe detonation trustworthy friends and family are essential as they will be the ones to listen and then to offer up the common sense twins so that we limit any damage caused by an impetuous declaration or resignation. You should always let the ranter rant themselves out before any interventions take place. The age old advice of ‘walking it off’ has basis in fact. I happily watch as the early exercise junkies windmill about thrusting ar ms and legs into the air, squat-

ting and puffing their way as they burrow like crabs into the sand. Runners check FitBits while ar ms,legs and backpacks flail and the moonstruck gaze mournfully out sur fing the waves until they are further away than the astronauts riding The Dragon.
In the past week the fisher men have reappeared, buoys have been stretched across the water in readiness for the summer onslaught. It is like a great beast awakening… and it is glorious. Since March 14 we have lived inside, bereft of nature and the nor mality
and beauty or ordinary life… and tentatively we are emerging from our isolation ready to fall into the arms of the world (at a two-metre distance of course). My hope is that we remember always what we have done; sheltering from the storm in order to protect those we love and those we do not even know. My hope is that society does remember and becomes kinder and once again in tune with the ebb and flow of tides, the changes of season and the beauty of the natural world. Not many of us will have missed the dirty metro or the crowded shopping centre or polluted city. I end this paean to the Mediterranean with a quote from my favourite poet, EE Cummings. “For whatever we lose (like a you or a me) “It’s always ourselves we find in the sea.” Toodle pip everyone and enjoy Phase 2.

ON Monday, May 25, police officers in Minnesota received a call to attend a ‘forgery in progress’ after a 46year-old black man, George Floyd, allegedly tried to purchase goods in a shop using a counterfeit $20 note. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers ordered Floyd out of his vehicle and cuffed him. Then he was pinned to the ground and surrounded by four officers, one of whom forced his knee into the back of Floyd’s neck. The officer’s statement said that Floyd had “physically resisted officers,” but many witnesses dispute this claim. Footage of Floyd’s detainment has already gone viral as they were streamed on Facebook Live by bystander Darnella Frazier. The video shows Floyd groaning and repeatedly struggling to say “I can’t breathe” to Derek Chauvin, the officer with his knee on Floyd’s neck. Floyd can be heard telling Chauvin: “I’m about to die. I can’t breathe. Please, the knee in my neck, I can’t breathe.” As the crowds plead with the officers to let him up as he is not resisting arrest, he eventually falls silent and stops moving, however, Chauvin defiantly does not remove his knee until the emergency services arrive. Floyd was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. A police statement states that he appeared to be in ‘medical distress,’ it did not mention that he had been pinned to the ground with the weight of a police officer crushing his airway. I am sure for a lot of people this brings to mind the case of Rodney King, who on March 3, 1991, was violently beaten by LAPD officers during an arrest for leaving the scene of an alleged crime and resisting arrest. These ‘attacks’ are separated by almost 30 years. Has mankind not evolved in the last 30 years? What have we been doing with our time? Have our heads been stuck behind laptops, phones and social media as technology advances, but our own minds, actions and beliefs do not? The four officers involved in Floyd’s killing have all been dismissed. Chauvin has since been charged with his murder. I suppose it was lucky there was somebody there with a mobile phone to record it for social media.

So many thousands of people had their flights cancelled due to Covid-19 it’s obviously not an overnight task to process the refunds, but Ryanair haven’t done themselves any favours and have exacerbated the situation by issuing vouchers in lieu of a refund when a simple email stating refunds will be issued ASAP would have calmed this very emotive issue.

Figure it out Dear Euro Weekly News, Does anybody have a clue as to what on earth has happened with the Spanish Coronavirus figures? One day it was 56 deaths in a day and then all of a sudden it’s 35 within a week. Internet trolls: mad, bad and disruptive
BARRY DUKE WHEN I glanced up at the clock and saw it was 3.30am, I realised I’d spent almost three hours playing whack-a-mole with an Inter net troll called John Allman. The fool had been bombarding my Freethinker website with increasingly hysterical comments about the Core Issues Trust (CIT), the ‘gay cure’ outfit that I wrote about in my last column. He was posting comments at the rate of one a minute in support of CIT, and I was binning them just as quickly. Mainly they were lengthy repeats of comments he’d already posted on the subject a grand total of 30 - and I was fast losing patience with a man whose locomotive had clearly come off the tracks. Now the thing about trolls is that they very rarely identify themselves. They insert themselves into various discussions
TROLLS: The world has more than its fair share. with the sole aim of wreaking havoc, and having achieved their aim scuttle off to repeat their antics elsewhere. They are a problem because they have the effect of turning civil discourse in World War III, and nor mal commenters - generally levelheaded and polite - react to
trolls with language that would make a sailor swoon. This leads to another problem. Many sites such as mine have a foul language filter which automatically places comments into a moderation queue if it spots ‘naughty’ words like ‘lesbians,’ ‘Allah’ and, for some weird reason,
‘beer!’ This means I need to moderate comments every 10 minutes or so. You wouldn’t believe how angry folk get when their words of wit and wisdom are held up. But back to Allman. He’s the second of two trolls who’ve identified themselves. The first was a UK evangelist called
Bob Hutton, who got himself banned from commenting on the Freethinker as well as on my Facebook page about 10 years ago. If prizes were given for spamming, he’d get a gold medal. Neither sought to hide their identities because they both imagined they could use my site to promote their respective agendas. Allman wants the world to know that he’s against ‘the queering of schools,’ is fanatically opposed to the EU and has ambitions to be an MP for the Christian Peoples Alliance, which sounds even barmier than the Tooting Popular Front, created for the 70’s Brit sitcom ‘Citizen Smith.’ Hutton, on the other hand, has a burning desire to save all atheists from hell. I wish I could say that I wish them luck with their respective endeavours, but I don’t. The world has more than its fair share of deranged individuals and I flatly refuse to help them spread their hateful beliefs.

A PERFECTLY preserved ‘archeological treasure’ has been unearthed beneath vines near the city of Verona in Northern Italy. The ancient Roman mosaic was discovered by archeologists in the hills above Negrar di Valpolicella after countless decades of failed attempts. Almost a century previously, the remains of a Roman villa had been found in the area, but in 1922 the dig was abandoned. Last summer, a team from the Superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Verona resumed the excavations. After halting during the coronavirus pandemic, the digging began again last week and the discovery was made. Experts say the pristine mosaic floor could date to third century AD, believed to be the date of the remains of the villa on the site. The area is still being excavated to see the full extent of the find.
