National Mourning SPAIN has declared that once all territories are in Phase 1 the nation will have an official 10-day mourning period, the most prolonged length in the history of its democracy. However, many have been left wondering, what does this national mourning mean? One of the

most significant changes will be all the half-mast flags in public buildings and ships. In interior spaces it is common to see the flag appear with a black crepe. Furthermore, there will be a posthumous tribute to symbolise the victims fallen by Covid-19 chaired by the Prime Minister himself.

Special delivery MALAGA’S Local Police helped to deliver a baby in the middle of a street on Sunday evening during the country’s lockdown. The healthy baby boy was bor n thanks to the help of four Local Policemen. Officers Rafael and Juan Carlos were on their way back to base after a false alarm at the end of their shift, when they were notified about a mother about to give birth in the middle of the street. As neither officers have any children

yet, given that Rafael is just 24 years of age, and his colleague Juan Carlos is only 26, two other officers (Carlos and Juan Miguel) jumped in the patrol car as soon as they heard what was happening and arrived on the scene within minutes to help. Thankfully they arrived just in time as the baby was arriving, and able to assist the other two officers. The ambulance arrived shortly after, in time to cut the umbilical cord and transfer mother and baby to hospital.

Good Samaritan recognised EVERY day, an unnamed man has visited the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella wearing a face mask and delivering water, soft drinks and fruit for hospital staff working under difficult circumstances during this coronavirus Covid19 pandemic. There has never been any request for pay-

ment, but the items have been generously donated by this individual who understands the important yet dangerous work the health workers are doing. So touched were they by his support that they made a collection and had a special commemorative plaque produced as their way

of thanking him for his kindness. He was so surprised when they applauded his arrival at the hospital and presented him with his gift that he broke down in tears. Certainly, one individual who has responded positively to the situation that those health workers face every day.

Award Winner THE way that some people have gone out of their way to help their struggling community over the last two months has been mind-blowing. Kara Caradas is one of those people, so it comes as no surprise that she has been nominated for this special recognition award throughout our footprint of Spain - Gibraltar to Valencia and the Balearics. For those who didn’t know her before, she is the fearless leader of the Costa del Sol’s Food Fairies. For many others she is the owner of The Boardwalk in Marbella, and you probably saw her on Sky News, discussing the plight of Costa restaurateurs. In each of these roles, Kara’s massive, caring and giving heart shines through. What motivates her to help those in need? “I have always done it, it’s in my nature. When I was 16 I used to take meals to the homeless in the street,” she told me when she visited us at the Euro Weekly News. Kara also runs a project that finds jobs for children from Malaga orphanages or employs them in the restaurants she and her sisters own. “These children have no rights in the government’s eyes, but if they become employed, then they have a purpose and can later apply for residency,” Kara told me. “The project also helps the children buy school clothes, glasses or save up for a special day at the beach or the Aqua Park, the things other kids take for granted.” I asked if Kara had a mantra that gets her through the day but instead of a mantra she told me a story that pushes her to do her best. “One of the first houses I visited during the crisis was a new mother. As she had not eaten for days her breast milk had dried up so she could not feed her child,” Kara recalled. “To be able to feed both that woman and her baby was enough to make me want to go on helping.” Kara and her family are very close and it’s hard to find a photograph where they are not together. Her sister Penny owns The Harbour and The Playwright restaurants, whereas Charley co-owns The

certainly not have survived the recent crisis, not that you would ever hear Kara say this. Nor could it have been easy to witness, despite knowing that they were bringing joy to so many families. Inez Robinson from Last Chance Animal Rescue, who has worked with Kara many times, was full of praise for her friend. “A few years ago she helped massively

She will go to the ends of the earth to help someone, whether they be animal or human, and her generosity is boundless.” Kara was nominated by the business people of the expat community as the greatest motivator and instigator of similar projects throughout the regions. She is a beautiful personality who radiates good energy and is hopeful that her restaurant, The Boardwalk, will open again soon and she can let her hair down at a big party. However, when the crisis finally passes it will be business as usual for Kara and she won’t stop helping those who need it: “It’s in my nature,” she said simply. Her strength brings to mind another strong and influential woman, Audrey Hepburn who said “As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” The American civil rights activist Rosa Parks once said, “One person can change the world” and on the Costa del Sol, Kara is that one person. She is changing the world constantly for many people, changing their lives for the better. Rosa Parks also said, “Each person must live their life as a model for others” and what better role model than Kara, someone who does her utmost for others and finds happiness through making others happy. Kara brought light when there was darkness, hope where there was fear, unity where there was solitude and a purpose for the whole madness. She is without doubt the holder of the title THE PRINCESS OF THE PEOPLE’S PAPER.

Kara is the name for our new future of sharing and giving. The people along the coast of Spain stand up and salute you KARA CARADAS.

Safe destination THE Tourism Department of the Benalmadena Town Hall has been working redesigning the promotional campaign for the town as a tourist destination. A statement from the department said, “We have rethought our entire tourism strategy in search of capturing a national and family-oriented tourism. We are pleased with the news that places Benalmadena as one of the most wanted destinations since the announcement by the President of the elimination of the mandatory quarantine as of July 1.” It went on to say: “To the British market we want to send a message of complete confidence: Benalmadena is fully prepared for the imminent summer season, we are a safe destination, with a contingency plan to guarantee the safety of visitors to beaches and shops. “Our hotel and restaurant businessmen have made an extraordinary effort to ensure that their businesses comply with all the security requirements recommended by the Ministry of Health.”

Lions still roaring THE President of La Cala de Mijas Lions Club Anita Humphreys, recently presented €200 to Suzie Malt the Coordinator of Mijas Collective Calling. Suzie joined the organisation, which mainly distributes food to the Marbella/Estepona area, so that she could help provide vitally needed support in the Mijas community during this Coronavirus pandemic. She and her helpers

collect and distribute food to 11 families in trouble in the Mijas area and in thanking the Lions she said how grateful she was for this wonderful donation promising that the money will go towards the cost of providing fresh food to these families. Possible revenge shooting A MAN said to be in his early 30’s and possibly British was taken to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella on Monday May 25 having been shot four times in the legs. Whilst infor mation is sparse at the moment, Sur suggests that this could be the first of a number of potential settling of scores between rival criminal gangs who have been ‘in hibernation’ due to the lockdown in Spain. Sadly, the drug gang culture which has reemerged over the past few years, operated mainly by foreigners, could be rearing its ugly head again. Police are investigating and will be taking a statement from the injured man following surgery and will no doubt also interview the person who drove him to hospital.

Age Care is planning to hold its coffee mornings again, albeit having to limit its numbers for social distancing reasons, at a restaurant

It hopes to be able to return to its former meeting place of the International Baptist Church in Calahonda when their extensive refurbishments have been completed. By that time, we all hope this present crisis has abated and a new semblance of normality will prevail.

Charity collaboration AFTER more than two months of closure, Benalmadena’s Cudeca is reopening its charity shops thanks to the collaboration of the community, but many volunteers, who are in ‘at risk’ groups, will not be able to continue helping as they did before. Each shop needs between 20 to 30 volunteers to help three to four hours a week, morning or after-

EURO WEEKLY NEWS spoke exclusively to pharmacist Borja Casado who is the owner and manager of Farmacia Paraiso Estepona. His phar macy has been open throughout the coronavirus crisis seven days a week for 12 hours a day. Borja and his team have worked through people’s panic and worries to bring the best advice and set their customer’s minds at ease with their positive and comforting attitude. Of course, they suffered supply issues at times “We realised that we were running out of masks so I managed to sign a contract with a good supplier to keep us in stock. We sold 20,000 masks in two months,” said Borja. The phar macy was kept up to date with constant information from colleagues and the government “We give recommendations. Ozone desinfection Golf courses open for play IN a major boost for Spain’s golfing holiday sector, most courses on the Costa del Sol, the Costa Almeria and in the rest of Andalucia are now open and ready for play. The RFAG Royal Andalucia Golf Federation reported golfers are teeing off once more on 61 courses in the region’s eight provinces. “After two months of waiting the vast majority of Andalucia’s golf courses are open and ready to receive players after applying all the necessary hygiene, safety and social distancing measures,” the federation said this week. “It’s time to get back to golf, to doing

sport and enjoying nature, to fresh air and the spring sunshine in the best possible setting,” the RFAG enthused. The federation urged golfing enthusiasts to get the clubs back out, telling them, “now is the time to support our courses and to thank them for the enormous effort they have made these long weeks of confinement to maintain our facilities in the best possible condition so that players could return.” Clubs which have already welcomed back players are obviously delighted to be up and running once more.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have opened an investigation into the discovery of a dead body in a car in Mijas. According to police sources, the lifeless body of a 38-year-old Spanish man was found in a car in the El Coto Urbanisation at the early hours of Saturday morning, May 23.

The Health Ministry published an order on Saturday May 23 which lifts the suspension on works in buildings in which people are living, which was brought into force on April 12 in order to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infections. PRISON VIOLENCE: Inmates flooded their cells and barricaded all entrances.

A CORRECTIONAL centre in Cordoba has had a rough 48 hours of violence which began on Saturday May 23 with an attempt to begin a riot in the M10 wing of the prison as the inmates flooded their cells using soapy water and barricaded all entrances with their mattresses. After destroying the furniture, they rallied inmates to ‘rise up’ and

fight the prison officers. However, the guards were able to keep the potential riot under control. The next day prison officers were alerted to a disturbance at around 8.00pm in the isolation wing of the facility. Upon entering the cell from which they suspected a disturbance, the prison officers were attacked with a bucket of water

mixed with bleach which if they had not been equipped with the correct protective material could have seriously injured them. The inmate had a glass shard which he used as a weapon after smashing the light in the ceiling and threatened to kill the officers. After a slight struggle the prisoner was restrained and relocated to solitary confinement.

Statistics have been published which say that 17 per cent of youngsters have felt low during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a larger percentage in economically-struggling families. The stark figures come from a survey conducted by Save the Children in April, at the height of Spain’s State of Alar m lockdown. The second phase of the lockdown de-escalation means that after two and half months, and with temperatures reaching summer-like highs, beach-goers can once again take a dip or catch some rays in all the Canary and Balearic Islands, three provinces in Andalucia, Murcia and Tarragona. RESIDENTS of the Moratalaz district in Madrid clashed during a noisy ‘cacerolada’ protest on May 20. People carrying Spanish flags and banging pots and pans to show their anger at decisions taken by President Pedro Sanchez’s administration came up against a bunch who opposes their protest action. One young man who is against the government ended up in hospital after he got punched. Quick action by members of the public and police officers prevented the incident from getting any worse, but tensions were high. People turned out on the streets in several locations, demanding “freedom” and calling for the national administration to resign. There was a heavy police presence to ensure protestors stayed at least two metres apart from each other and to prevent roads ending up blocked to traffic. There have also been protests over government actions on the pandemic in Spanish cities, including Salamanca, Valencia, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Logroño and Guadalajara.

Setting Sanchez in context

TO THE LIMIT: Sanchez has a win-win attitude.

OTTO VON BISMARCK stated politics is the art of the possible, Mr SĂĄnchez takes this to its limit. On two occasions he won the leadership of his party and just a few months after literally being thrown out by his own party he rose like a phoenix to make a vote of non-confidence against Mr Rajoy (PP leader) and convert himself into the President of Spain. A few months later he also won the General Election and made a coalition Government with Podemos which was the reason that his party had originally rebelled against him. Now four months into his term he has been able to survive five States of Alarms but has once again managed to upset practically everyone, from members of his own party to the unions, the confederation of employers and industry and of course all the opposition parties.

This time he negotiated, in secret, with a political party called Bildu (an antisystem political party) the annulment of the 2012 labour reform. You may at this point ask yourself why would all this bother me? Well, it will make an obvious difference for all expats who work or are employers in Spain. As always Mr Sanchez has a winwin attitude and whatever he does comes out good for him, therefore, he gave a late-night clarification of the deal and tried to alleviate the situation saying it’s not a total deregulation of the law just a partial change. The outlook once again seems to be difficult for Mr Sanchez and it looks very improbable for Mr Sanchez to be able to complete the de-escalation phases as the State of Alarm is essential for this. But for Mr Sanchez anything is possible.

ACCORDING to the Law of Horizontal Property which governs all communities

throughout Spain, only a general meeting of owners can make and approve important community decisions. Any owner, even one in debt, has the right to attend a general meeting of owners. All communities are required to hold at least one ordinary general meeting per year, the AGM. The meeting elects or re-elects a president, members of the committee and appoints an administrator. It approves the community accounts, the annual budget, ordinary and extra-ordinary community fees, changes to the statutes or internal rules and other issues relating to the general interests and wellbeing of the community. after March 14 were suddenly prohibited from holding it. Even though the restrictions have now eased, allowing more people to meet if they choose to, many communities consist of more owners than the confinements permit so the situation remains complicated. The general consensus is; providing there are no changes to the agreements approved at previous general meetings then things should carry on as they are, furthermore and although presidents, members of the committee and the administrator are only legally approved to hold their positions for one year, due to the extra-ordinary circumstances, they too should carry on for the time being. The community budget and consequently the community fees due from each owner approved for 2019 should apply to the 2020 budget and paid according to the communities normal arrangements, monthly, quarterly or annually. Urgent decisions normally requiring a meeting of owners should fall to the president, relevant committee members and the adminis-

trator to decide and if needed, be ratified at the next annual or extra-ordinary general meeting of owners. In short, common sense should prevail. Complications will arise when communities need to approve extra-ordinary community fees, amend statutes pertaining to sensitive issues like the rental of private properties as shortterm tourist accommodation, subjects likely to require a 100 per cent unanimous approval and subjects that often invoke endless hours of argument. In a community of or at a meeting attended by, currently 10 owners or less (depending on the phase) according to the law and the lockdown rules such a meeting could be held and solutions arrived at without too much of a problem. With meetings for larger communities, careful thinking and the encouragement of proxy votes, thereby limiting the number of owners needed to be physically present, would be viable but possibly not popular. However in the event that more owners than the confinements permit want to attend a meeting, the

president will have to cancel it no matter how important it is. Regardless of the numbers, the potential legal fallout is considerable. For example with second homes, every owner has the legal right to participate in a community meeting however if they normally live in another province or outside of Spain currently they cannot. No owner can be obliged to give another owner their proxy and unlike commercial companies in Spain, there is still no legal proviso for communities to hold virtual meetings over the internet. As votes, even emailed proxies, have to be presented physically at any meeting, votes by telephone, WhatsApp, zoom video conference or any other technological means would not be acceptable. Consequently if a meeting was convened, later it could easily be considered illegal and therefore void. On the other hand if such a meeting did go ahead and absolutely no one objected or made a claim in court then there probably wouldn't be a problem. In the meantime stay safe.

British government debts keep growing

THE latest figures from the UK Office of National Statistics (ONS) will make painful reading for the British government and Chancellor Rishi Sunak as borrowing for the month of April 2020 was £62.1 billion (€68.4 billion), the highest amount since records were first kept. It is easily understandable that this need for cash has been caused in the fight against Covid­19 as the government has stepped in to help guarantee furloughed employees wages whilst tax income has fallen by 26.5 per cent when compared to April 2019 receipts.

By John Smith Borrowing in the latest full finan­ cial year (April 2019 to March 2020) is estimated to have been £62.7 bil­ lion (€62.9 billion), £22.5 billion (€24.8 billion) more than in the pre­ vious financial year and as can be seen, April’s borrowings almost equate to the entire borrowing of the previous year. The ONS has indicated that these figures are estimates and will be ad­ justed as more information becomes available, but the inference is that they are likely to be higher rather than lower when finalised.

It was also announced that net public sector debt at the end of April 2020 was £1,887.6 billion (€2,076 bil­ lion) which equates to 97.7 per cent of GDP and it should be remembered that during the last financial crises, Spain was criticised by the European Union when its borrowing exceeded GDP for a while. Once the country has recovered from the virus that has affected so many, the British government is go­ ing to have a very difficult and po­ tentially longer job to try to get the economy back to a healthy condi­ tion.

The administrator is aware the president now has two ‘denuncias’ against him, which could af­ fect his presidency. As a matter of interest should the administrator inform the community owners of this change of circumstances regarding the president? The word denuncia simply means ‘report.’ It does not mean that the president is guilty of any infraction of the law. This would expose him to a possible lawsuit or even criminal charges. It is perfectly possible that these reports will come to nothing. In which case, the circumstances have not changed. If a court has issued a sentence for some offence, that would be another matter because it is in the public record.

O2 and Virgin Media THERE has been a great deal of bank interest in the proposed merger of 02 (a subsidiary of Span­ ish group Telefónica) and Virgin Media (a subsidiary of Liberty Glob­ al) in the UK with oversubscription for the €4.5 billion credit line. The funding is needed to finance the new operation and Spanish Banks Santander, BBVA and Caixa­ Bank have committed to loans as have international banks such as Barclays, BNP Paribas and Gold­ man Sachs. TRADE DEALS: An ebullient Boris Johnson outside No 10.

Using excess power STATE owned organisation ADIF is responsible for managing tracks and railway stations across Spain as well as ensuring there is sufficient electricity to power all of the rolling stock.

As it is generating more electricity than it needs, it has turned its attention to diverting this excess to create charging points for electric cars as there will be a demand for at least

300,000 points within the next 10 years and more than double that number longer term. It is now looking for a commercial partner to install these points.

With a majority in the House of Commons of 80, you would think that the government would be safe from losing any vote, but with some 50 Conservative MPs indicating that they could vote against the govern­ ment over the matter, it could see an embarrassing loss. The other problem is that once Britain leaves the European Union it needs decent trade deals with strong economic partners and Presi­ dent Trump has already warned that the involvement of Huawei could af­ fect a deal with America. It appears therefore that although Boris Johnson can’t simply cut the Chinese company out completely in the short term, he now plans to fin­ ish their involvement by 2023. The American fears are that if in­ structed by the Chinese government, Huawei could conceivably disrupt se­ curity matters not just in the USA but with its friends and partners. There is also some concern that despite China’s apparent acceptance of a style of democracy, those in power are still controlling much of what happens and could easily start another ‘Cold War’ if it suited them.

BUSINESS EXTRA Green deal THE supply of renewable electricity to the nine motorways taken over by the Spanish government and managed by public company Seittsa has been awarded to Endesa. In return for a two-year contract worth €4.36 million, all electricity will be green.

Busy ports PORTS in Spain have not been adversely affected by the lockdown with Cadiz seeing a growth of 14 per cent over the same time last year and Cartagena being the most profitable with turnover of €50 million and profit of €19.3 million.

And have you also noticed how many of these so called intellectuals choose to spout their ‘locked down’ views against a background of shelves stuffed with books? Bearing in mind that most of us have, at the mere push of a button, access to just about every book ever published, is this supposed to instill into us some form of confidence, that those who have access to these ‘libraries’ are the ‘whizzes’ we need to give us the answers to all the tribulations that beset us? Give us a break. I’d like to see any one of them in the shoes of the British government able to do a better job. Most of us can hone in on a couple of problems and decide that we know better; but this situation

UK GOVERNMENT: Needs the public’s encouragement. has presented the government with a whole multitude of unprecedented circumstances. Their decisions and actions have needed to traverse an almost unbelievable spectrum of ongoing difficulties, from the supply of paper masks and new laws to the balanced distribution of billions of pounds in their attempts to keep the country and its citizens from sinking into a morass of economic debt and despair.

Medical conundrums, which include testing and supplies, have created logistical nightmares that would challenge the finest managerial brains in the world. The pure mental strain and responsibilities have been enough to bring any normal bunch of individuals to their knees. Yet, despite the constant nit picking of the left, they have with calm dignity soldiered on, even though their own leader was incapacitated for some

weeks. Well I for one think they deserve far more credit than they are receiving. If anyone needed the encouragement and gratitude of a public they are obviously trying so hard to protect and serve, it is this government. A group of dedicated men and women, who, through no fault of their own, suddenly found themselves, forced into the front line of defence from an invisible attacking pestilence whose sole

enemy is the entire human race. For heavens sake, all of you trying to get brownie points, or reap cheap political advantage from this nightmare should be giving them all the support you can. Anything less makes you a part of the problem and most emphatically not a part of the solution. Another occurrence arising from all this mayhem is the reduction by 57 per cent of out- patients visiting A&E. Assuming around 10 per cent of these are genuine cases of those not wishing to visit for personal reasons, this leaves a huge section of people staying away with other maladies, which must include the drunks, hypochondriacs and the victims of street violence that usually jam the waiting rooms of these vital overworked departments. Let’s hope all these time wasters continue to see some sense when all this gets back to normal. But don’t hold yer breath!

A bit of business with the old man MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE had enough of reading, watching, tracking and everything else about the pandemic so I’ve decided not to write about that for a couple of weeks. What I’ve decided is to tell you a couple of stories that will eventually go into the book that supposedly I will write one day. My dad was a London Eastender. He was a bit of a criminal but not a very good one because he kept getting caught and finished up in prison. In fact, till I was about five I thought he worked in the post office because I always saw him behind a glass partition when mum said we are going to see dad at work today. I also had a lot of ‘Uncles’ that used to come round and discuss a bit of business with the old man. My favourite was Uncle Sammy who always brought me sweets. On one occasion, when I was about seven, he came round with a lor-

ry load of stuff for my dad. After a bit of chit chat my dad said to me that Uncle Sammy was going to Southend and would I like to go with him and get some ice cream and keep him company. I say asked. He actually said to Sammy take the kid with you and buy him an ice cream. So off we went. Sammy delivered the stuff, I got my ice cream and I never gave it another thought until many years later when I was visiting my dad, who, by this time, was very ill with Parkinson’s. I told him I had this vague memory of this outing and asked my dad if my memory was correct. He laughed and said yes it was. I asked why it was funny and he then proceeded to tell me the reason I went. Uncle Sammy was a ridiculous gambler and couldn’t be trusted with money so my dad, in his infinite wisdom, decided that as he didn’t want to deliver this lorry load of stolen property himself he would give Sammy a ‘drink’ for delivering the stuff. He reckoned if he took me he’d have to bring me back and therefore wouldn’t be able to nick the money! Vicki McLeod, Mallorca VICKI, a writer and photographer, wanted to do something creative with her time during the lockdown and so started a Facebook group called ‘Majorca, Mallorca at home together’ a help group to keep people in the community that has become greatly appreciated by those in her community. “I felt a lot of the other groups were very negative and giving out misinformation. I wanted to create a platform where the rules were to be kind and be nice to each other without spreading fear,” said Vicki. She now considers herself the “instigator” or “head girl” among the team of friends who helped her keep the page updated and grow to have 2,500 followers. “Many people have now increased their social circle through the group by sharing good, positive news. I know there are people who are alone who are scheduling their day around the page.” The page has included fun events like pop quizzes, competitions to win vouchers for local struggling businesses, exercise classes and any information that may help.” Vicki is a whirlwind of positive energy and hopes

WE were inundated with nominations for this married couple from Murcia, who created the Facebook page ‘Coronavirus in Spain-Information’ which has been a lifeline for people in their community. Adrian is originally from the UK and Paloma is from Spain, together they manage to translate and convey all the important information coming from the government which has helped to set people’s minds at ease. “When the State of Alarm was announced I uploaded a video I had recorded to my Key Style Properties page pointing

out what the decree meant. There were so many hits it has now reached 31,000 views. I decided to start a page that featured these types of videos and posted them every day for 46 days.” Upon watching the videos you can see how Adrian has built a trusting audience, he is down to earth, upbeat and certainly breaks down the barriers when it comes to firm and sometimes confusing governmental information and delivering it in a positive and comforting manner that dispels any fear. Also, I am currently auctioning off specially made t-shirts to give the proceeds to charity.” It is amazing that the pair have been able to give up so much of their time as they are new parents to four-month-old Lily who has become a star in her own right. They are certainly a selfless and giving family.

Euro Weekly News asked you, the reader, to tell us about the fantastic people who have kept your community together during these trying times. Who has gone out of their way to provide for others? Who has helped make these frightening times more bearable? Who deserves some pampering? We l l , t h e f l o o d g a t e s opened and we have been inundated with emails from our readers so impressed by how certain that the page can continue to be a valuable resource for people that are struggling and even businesses. “The crisis has brought a community closer, until recently I didn’t even know my neighbours three doors down, but now we all come out to clap on our doorsteps and get through it together.”

John Sharples, Costa del Sol JOHN is a whirlwind of energy and humour and could put a smile on anybody’s face. With his personal Facebook page, he posts musings, poems and hilarious videos to lift people’s spirits. EWN received e-mails aplenty from his supporters and fans on the Costa del Sol who believe that he has given them something to look forward to by bringing the community together through entertainment on social media. John was eager to do food deliveries to help needy familes but was aware of the restrictions in movement, he explained, “I would let people know where my car would be parked and leave it unlocked so they could fill it with donated food. Then friends that I know who did the deliveries could pick the donations up from there.” John also runs the What’s on in La Cala de Mijas page where he has kept the community up-to-date with information on the virus and the news unfolding in the hope of dispelling any fear and setting people’s minds at ease. “I love helping people, thousands of people have followed the page now because they know they can get accurate news from there,” said John. Many of his followers would wait patiently for the live bingo he organised where he sent out hundreds of bingo cards for everyone to play, usually 200 or more people. Apart from his online presence, John has been helping different charities. He

has arranged with the local La Cala Lions organisation to provide jigsaws to those who need them to relieve the boredom of lockdown and has been collecting dog and cat food for ACE and taking it to the kennels in his van. John has started slowing the page down now and directed his followers towards the best news sources. “I want the page to get back to letting people know what is going on in the area and also to start helping local businesses and giving them a boost when they need it most.” There is one thing for sure, lockdown would have been very boring on the Costa del Sol had it not been for John Sharples.

Josefina Navarro, Axarquia UPON speaking with Josefina, or Fina as her friends call her, I immediately realised why so many people had been in touch singing her praises. She is a warm, caring woman who goes out of her way to make sure everybody else is ok. She has been a volunteer with the Red Cross in Granada for some time and is very aware of the number of people in need in the area. “There are so many people here who live alone, we help them write letters and try to cheer them up. I also have workshops which help them manage health and emotions,” she said. Many people pointed out how Fina has helped them with setting up in Spain whether it is to do with paperwork

He has stood out among all the members of his community for all the extra work he has done to help them during the health crisis. “When the State of Alarm started I created a small team of five people to help the old people in the a r e a . We w o u l d d o their shopping for them and deliver them face masks. We must have handed out between 30,000 and 40,000 masks to the community,” said George and added, “We also helped with Caritas food donations, delivering food to around 30 families in need.” George, a positive and cheer ful man originally from Mexico moved to Spain with his Scottish wife 19 years ago and brought up their three daughters here. He has not seen any of them since the lockdown began as they were out of town, but that does not stop him from spreading his positivity He has also recently become the secretary for a cat rescue association Kitty Kat Almanzora Valley. “I helped a couple create this association where they gather up street cats and have them treated, take care of their vet’s bills and I help translate all the paperwork.” Having spoken to George it is clear to see why he received so many nominations, he is both humble and grateful and admits that it is just in his nature to help people and he hopes to continue to help them long after the crisis is over.

or finding a home. Which is a little ironic as Fina herself is a political refugee from Venezuela currently trying to gain her own citizenship. When we spoke, Fina was making plans to take a member of the community to the hospital the next day, a man who had to have his foot amputated and she had selflessly been taking him food deliveries and checking up on him. She also has a WhatsApp group that allows her to keep in touch with the residents and greets them cheerfully to lift their spirits. It seems she has always been very caring. “In Venezuela when the doctors came from America to treat the children I would be the interpreter between them and the children’s families to make sure they were getting the correct information.” When the crisis is over Fina will continue helping with the Red Cross and has programmes planned with them. “Afterwards it will be tough but we can all get through it by helping each other.”

Karen Mailing Cowles, Costa Blanca North WHEN the State of Alarm was announced Karen was packing up for the night in her office “I remember it clearly, I got very emotional as it immediately made me realise how many families will go hungry.” That evening I spoke to a friend to work out what we could do. “I know how Spain works, people will not receive food parcels and I was very concerned for those who live day to day not knowing where the next meal is coming from, so we set up a food bank.” At the time Karen also thought it beneficial to have a group of translators on hand as there was so much information coming in that it could have become very confusing. She also began posting videos every day on her Facebook page to let people know what was going on and give messages of hope and support. With the help of her husband, they transformed their garage into a production line and food bank to put together food parcels for families. “The town hall would not allow anybody else in the area, apart from me, to leave the house. This meant that I was single-handedly shopping for and delivering to 56 families.” She also helped organise the fundraising page for Benidorm’s British Businesses Association Food Bank which currently holds €12,713. Through all her work she saw glimmers of positivity and put smiles on the faces of families. She even had one person tell her “Oh my goodness it feels like Christmas” as they were so relieved to receive what they needed.

Karen felt like a mother with an extended family. From it all, she believes it has created a caring community. “My community has been so, so impressive. They have gone above and beyond, all ages came together.” One thing that was especially touching is that along with some children for the village they wrote anonymous ‘notes of hope’ and added them to to the deliveries for the families to find. Karen pointed out that she will continue helping those who have suffered the knockon effects of the crisis “There’s no greater thing than giving,” she said.

MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING IT’S a strange time; out of lockdown but still with so many restrictions and uncertainties regarding what is happening and what’s going to happen next. As it stands at the time of writing we can now at least walk on the beach, as long as we don’t go in the water or sunbathe. We can apparently do aquatic sports… Between the hours of 10am until noon and 7pm to 8pm we should abstain from going anywhere, these hours are set for those over 65 years, the most vulnerable of our community. Also important is to wear our face masks, fines can and will be imposed if we don’t. Chiringuitos, beach bars can now open but only at 50 per cent occupancy, many with the intention to reopen at the beginning of June.

What goes around comes around Even with restaurants and bars open everything will be different but if we all find the plus side we can make the most of it; whatever ‘it’ is. For example, this is a unique moment for us residents to really appreciate and enjoy our beautiful city in peak season WITHOUT all the tourists. Keeping positive is above all the key; not always easy which is why, more than ever, we need be watchful of our friends, neighbours, class and workmates to be ready in case they need a helping hand but don’t dare ask. Undoubtedly it will be even more challenging for businesses to survive so now is also the moment to show appreciation to those companies that went out of their way and above and beyond to support the community during lockdown; they should be prioritised when deciding where to spend our money.

GET INVOLVED: Perhaps things can get better. As with the businesses that already support the #ZeroHero incentive to promote local road traffic safety, they have and are showing the resident community that they are open for more than just your business and that

they consider themselves to be a part of the community and ‘in this’ together; and together we can make anything happen, all positive if we put our minds to it. This brings to mind a suggestion I read on Facebook: if we

see something that isn’t up to standard in a business please speak quietly to the person in charge to comment on what could perhaps be improved rather than take videos to shame them on social media; we have to assume that everyone is trying their best in very novel and perplexing circumstances. This is obviously another moment for our resident community to shine. We can all get involved with something and someone: #BetterTogether and #StrongerTogether, eating, drinking and spending at the places that are run by real people with authentic hearts, maintaining our support of the charities that also depend on us, some desperately and being grateful in the knowledge that if we keep up our good spirits and heart-felt actions, what goes around does come around and perhaps between us, even better than before and even sooner than we think.

Overcoming Procrastination

YOU have a task to complete, it’s important, you need to get it done but you use every excuse to put it off. Does this sound familiar to you? I am the queen of procrastination. Yes me! A qualified mentor who helps men and women all over the world deal with negative mindsets and anxiety issues, yet I procrastinate. Some people associate procrastination as laziness but this is far from the truth. Those who procrastinate actually do so to try and avoid distress yet ironically, it actually increases the stress levels and can have an impact on your health. It can cause lack of sleep, lower your self-esteem and in some cases raise your blood pressure. So why do we do it? It is mainly fear based. Think of the last time you procrastinated. Was the task difficult? Was it time consuming? Did you question your ability? When I was first asked to become a newspaper columnist, I procrastinated

DIG DEEPER: Believe in your ability and tell yourself out loud you CAN do it. all week. I looked for as many things as possible to keep me busy so I could put off my column. I very nearly quit before I had even started. I had to dig deep and get out of my god damn way! I lacked self-belief. It was new to me therefore; I worried if i was good enough. I asked myself the

same question I ask all of my clients; what physical evidence did i have to make this thought true? The answer as always was, absolutely nothing! How could I know I wasn’t good enough unless I actually tried! I kicked my own butt, counted five, four, three, two, one and got on with it.

I’ve loved it ever since! So how do you overcome procrastination? You simply have to get out of your own way. Understand the REAL reasons you’re afraid and ask yourself the same question above. What physical evidence do I have that make my thoughts true? If you need to dig deeper; here are seven easy steps to help you along the way. 1. Do the task for a few minutes when you start something your brain stays alert until you finish. 2. Do the hard task first. 3. Believe in your ability - tell yourself out loud you CAN do it. 4. Manage your environment - Control it, don’t let it control you. 5. Set yourself short deadlines. 6. Model success - find your inspiration. 7. Develop a reward system. What a Day to be Alive GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY WAKING on Monday, I was ready for my ‘new,’ old routine. Out of bed at 6am, a quick shower, a quicker coffee, and it was time to run. One week back to my morning fitness regime, and already I feel that life is somewhat normal. Los Monteros, as the sun rises, is reason enough to be out early. However, the chance to push harder each day, against the pasta and wine diet, is the goal. Of course there’s the added icing on the cake; a cool swim once home. While fitness mode is well and truly on track, I really must work on my pasta intake (note to self). On Tuesday, I had to meet a friend for lunch in Marbella, and while the idea of simply being able to utter those words made me giddy, arriving at Da Bruno, I felt like the cat who got the cream. Paseo Maritimo, just as the Marbella I love - tranquil, friendly and stylish. I adore Da Bruno, and have done for years. With this in mind, I was curious to see how they would adapt to the new normal. I’m glad, but not surprised, to report that everything was done perfectly, in accordance to the guidelines. Awaiting my friend Olivia, I sipped a Campari and soda, while all around me, smiling faces. Each table on the terrace occupied, with fellow diners, who looked as chuffed as me, to be free. Olivia arrived, turned heads, and we air kissed at a social distance, that would make Anna Wintour take notice. Without flinching, I ordered carbonara, only to be asked if I wanted traditional Italian, or a version made with cream. I’m aware that some people opt for a mixed up idea, prepared with a cream sauce. I don’t. Few things bother me, but messing with classic recipes, such as pasta alla carbonara, is sinful. Whoever concocted the con panna, should be reprimanded. Anyhow, more pressing, was the fact I’d eaten more pasta. It was very good. After lunch we strolled the almost empty streets of Marbella, under shady trees, where glamorous ladies chatted, socially distant, of course. All around us, an air of afternoon calm. Most stores remained closed, which was a pity, as

FREEDOM: Life now seems semi-real. we both wanted to buy things. Still, life felt semi-real. Now is the time to reboot the economy. Now is the time to remember, that while we are all on the same yacht, and money’s too tight to mention, a simple coffee at a local café in the morning, is a step in making cash flow, and society come alive. The sooner we adapt correctly and return to life, the better. I know many will probably say they disagree, and base this on the fact that certain people are unable to adhere to simple laws. We must remain positive in the hope that even those who are sadly slow on the uptake, will wake up soon. Yes wearing face masks is horrible. Social distancing, a task. But the rewards are why we are here. Life. As the week came to a close, I realised I only know what day it is, once this column appears. I for one clearly need normality to kick in fast. Looking back over the last 10 weeks, it feels like I’m just coming to the end of a summer holiday. Long days, long lunches, too much food, and way too much wine. I even started smoking cigarettes at one point. Marlboro Menthol. Thankfully I gave that up quick, as I believe menthol cigarettes, or ‘Mintys’ as I call them, have been withdrawn from the market. With my addictive personality, I am now stockpiling whitening toothpaste, paranoid I’ve stained my teeth. The sooner we spend, the sooner we work. As the headline says - it is indeed great to be alive, but let’s remember those who lost lives to Covid-19. Let’s proceed, but with advised caution. Enjoy your freedom.

DEPENDENT NATION DEAR Leapy Lee, I like your articles in EWN, in fact, it is the only bit apart from the puzzles I even bother with. Recently the headlines seem to only portray whining expats, mostly British. Two comments on this week’s article. I predict that there will be a spike in coronavirus in the UK around June 11, approximately 21 days after the end of Ramadan and the following Eid. The other comment is about UK being able to produce anything, This is more or less straight from Sun Tzu. How do you reduce a country’s capabilities and make it subservient? Provide a range of goods to them which is cheaper than their own home-produced goods. Wait 10 years and they will have lost the capability to produce them and many associated goods, their workforce will have a skills gap. Keep supplying enough goods cheaper than homeproduced goods and you eventually arrive at a nation who is dependent and ripe for effective subjugation or is no longer a threat. Coal, steel, and national defence goods need not be the first ones supplied. Look at what we are short of and where it is usually sourced from. Regards A follower

OUR VIEW Every man for himself IT seems reasonable to say the world has been extremely poorly served by those that should have been there to help - but have failed dreadfully. It is reasonable that we have put our government under intense scrutiny and, regrettably, in too many instances they have been found wanting. From selling vital PPE to overseas countries to the delay in ordering a lockdown, our political leaders emerge as well-meaning, hard-working, but extremely incompetent. If ever there was a time for a global organisation to seize control this was it; yet nobody has risen to the challenge. One of the main culprits has to be the World Health Organisation and some very questionable moves from its director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. In late January he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and went on to praise China for “setting a new standard for outbreak control” and commended the nation’s leaders for their “openness to sharing information.” The sinister truth was radically different. In Wuhan, the virus epicentre, Chinese police were busy arresting citizens who dared to tell the truth about the growing pandemic. There is no doubt that the WHO’s shocking lack of action and near collusion with the deceit from China allowed the virus to spread. Meanwhile, the United Nations’ major agencies have issued a graphic warning of a famine of ‘Biblical’ proportions and said this is the greatest challenge the world has faced since the Second World War. However, it has raised only around a quarter of the £3 billion it wants immediately to provide relief to 250 million people worldwide it fears are in imminent risk of starvation. It’s plain to see that when a ship is sinking it’s a case of every man for himself, and therefore it’s hardly surprising that countries across the planet are keeping hold of their cash to look after their own citizens.

May I suggest that if they do not want to wear masks they should stay at home and surely their world does not revolve around drinking in the bars, although it makes them furious that they cannot go there. Pen pals HELLO Leapy, Believe it or not, I have afforded myself time to sit down and read the EWN (May 7-13 ). Seldom do I get inspired to put ‘pen to paper’ about political issues, instead, I spout off to my, long-suffering wife, to vent my frustrations! You could not have spoken truer and wiser words with reference to the, predominantly, left-wing inspired BBC. Personally, I don’t think it stops with the BBC, but it is certainly dominated by them. As tax-paying citizens of a democratic country, we should demand unbiased, informative reporting, and, NOT anti-Conservative party mind games. Everyone is entitled to their political opinions but journalists have a duty to broadcast factual information that is not influenced by their own, or that of the giant organisations who pay their generally over-inflated wages, political persuasions. FACE masks slow the spread of coronavirus, however, they also create humidity, friction and heat which causes irritation. Still, the benefit of viral protection outweighs the temporary risks to your skin. Tweaks to your skincare regimen can help prevent and treat mask-induced issues. Avoid wearing make-up beneath a face mask to prevent further occlusion of the pores. Do, however, apply sunscreen, as UVA and UVB rays can penetrate a mask. One of the most common face mask irritations is acne. Breakouts happen when pressure from the mask traps oil

and skin in the pores. Treatments with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can be worn under a mask to treat stubborn blemishes. Pressure to pores can cause folliculitis which occurs when hair follicles become inflamed and infected. Men should leave a small amount of stubble to prevent ingrown hairs. Avoid the temptation to squeeze bumps, as you might push the infection deeper. Allergic contact dermatitis presents with an itchy, red, flaky rash, often limited to the area of contact. IT’S important to give yourself time to recover and really heal after a mental breakdown, whatever your final diagnosis may be… whether its bipolar, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, etc. Imagine the time it takes to heal a broken bone. If you fell down the stairs and broke your ankle, would you expect to get up and walk within a few days? Probably not. In fact, society would help you take the time you need to heal. “Don’t rush things! Stay off that ankle until it heals. Here, let me help you with that!” The image of your leg in a plaster helps people associate the injury with the need to take it easy and let nature work its magic. Oh, how different it is when we fall off the wagon of life because of a m e n t a l breakdown or in my case after a bipolar episode. We all try to ‘get back to normal’ way too quickly, and often the result is another mood swing to knock us down once again, and it tends to hit us harder than the original episode. Mood swings exhaust the mind and the body. Leaving you feeling weak and exhausted. Mine pick me up and throw me around like a rag doll. And like anyone who goes through a physical illness, I need time to recover in order to get my life back on track. After a mild episode it usually takes me two days to recover, stripping it back to basics with early nights, a no sugar diet, off the fizzy drinks and alcohol! After a bad episode it can make your body feel like it has run a marathon for a while (not that I have

ever ran a marathon, but it’s what I imagine it feeling like!) You’re emotionally and physically worn out. I’ve learned that true healing is not just about getting rid of mood swings; it’s about letting the brain and body get back on track over time. Trying to get back too quickly after such a draining experience can lead to a vicious cycle of never healing fully - and being more susceptible to another collapse. Society expects so much from us. I still expect way too much of myself. If I don’t take the time I need to heal, my bipolar may go away for a while - but it doesn’t go far, and not for long. Mood swings and episodes bash away at my day to day functioning, ability to work, relationship stability, and even my immune system... YES, I know the feeling of “I have to get back to work or I will lose my job!” I wish we could come out of m o o d swings quickly and immedia t e l y pick up our lives, but we rarely do. Years of trying to manage my bipolar with a job and being a mother to a very active seven-yearold have taught me to think of my immediate needs and not to look so far into the future. I have built a life around my bipolar that works for me. When I break - and it happens - I give myself time to heal and get back on track! Olivia’s La Cala reopens! AS Elliott Wright reopened his beautiful venue again, this Monday, May 18, we decided to go down and pay a visit to see how things were going! As for everyone, the pandemic has been a scary time for Elliott and his staff. He relies on seasonal tourism and had spent the winter refurbishing the venue, ready for high season. Olivia’s had only been open a week when lockdown was announced, meaning they had to close again! With nobody knowing what might happen in the near future, it was worrying for his large team. Many venues are still waiting to open, unsure whether it is economically viable yet. Olivia’s staff, however, were relieved to hear Elliott’s decision, and there has been lots of positive feedback. They told us that the community has really come together, and the local support has been wonderful! It was a beautiful sunny day when we arrived, and the customers were

slowly trickling in. There were local business owners enjoying drinks and food. Elliott said that he would, of course, be reciprocating by visiting other local businesses himself. We could see for ourselves, upon arrival, that the staff were providing clients with sanitiser, and taking their temperatures. All of the staff were equipped with gloves and masks. Elliott told us that for now, he

a few tricks up their sleeve, and they definitely still want to hold their annual White Party! Elliott told us that he is hoping that the quarantine regulations will be lifted soon, to not only bring back the tourism but to make it easier for those with second homes. He himself will not be going back to the UK for some time, even though he would love to be able to nip over and see his kids. However, it is just not viable at the moment with the long quarantine measures, especially when trying to run a business. On the plus side, Elliott tells us that he thinks this scary time has brought us all closer together, that there is more unity in the world. So many people are working together, and supporting each other. He says that he can only hope that the world will be a nicer place when we come out the other side. We do too.

IF you have access to the BBC iPlayer then you will have the chance to watch the strangest version of Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky which has been recorded for the series Culture in Quarantine. This version is performed under lockdown by a number of renowned dancers, all of whom are filmed at home dancing in bathtubs which are filled with water. It’s a three-minute special choreographed by New Zealand born dancer Corey Baker and is just one of a number of different pieces on the BBC site including plenty of radio performances which can be down-

loaded easily. If, however you prefer your ballet more mainstream then the English National Ballet are streaming their 2018 version of the full ballet which was filmed in Liverpool and features lead Principals Isaac Hernández as Prince Siegfried and Jurgita Dronina as Odette/Odile. This went online at 9pm Wednesday May 27 and is available to watch until 9pm Friday May 29 at the ENB Facebook page. The company releases regular fulllength ballets each week, but they are only available to view free of charge for 48 hours.

THE famous Caesar salad hails from Mexico! It was first developed in 1924 by Italian born Caesar Cardini and his brother Alex. Cardini owned the Hotel Caesar, located in Tijuana, Mexico. The story goes that the hotel had ran out of food and so Caesar prepared a surprise dish, he took some salad leaves, added garlic, mustard, parmesan and lemon and flamboyantly made the salad at the client’s table giving real theatre to the preparation. It was a huge success and since then has probably become the most famous salad

on the planet! So, the salad isn’t exactly Italian nor does it have any connection with the ancient Roman Emperor Caesar. It is however one of the most delicious salads especially lovely to eat in this hot weather, but I have given it my own little twist by adding grilled sardines and there is a story behind it. Last week was our first taste of freedom after being locked down for over two months and so I invited some friends for a light lunch on the terrace at home. It was a scorching hot day and so I barbecued some chicken which I had marinated in garlic oil and lemon juice and some sardines and served it all with a large Caesar salad. The first time I ever made or even heard of a Caesar salad was when I was working at the Savoy Hotel in London. The sous chef walked into the larder kitchen (which I was in charge of) to give me the daily

FREEDOM: Enjoying a barbecue with some friends at home. update on orders. It was a tiny kitchen behind the main kitchen that prepared all the starters and salads. The sous chef said that Elizabeth Taylor was coming for lunch and she probably would like a Caesar salad, so be prepared he said. I said a Caesar Salad

no problem Chef! What the hell is a Caesar salad I thought!! This was about 1980 and we didn’t have internet in those days so I grabbed a copy of Larousse Gastronomique (which every good kitchen had on a shelf somewhere) and looked it up. It explained the salad and that it contained anchovies and so I went downstairs to the fish section to ask if they had any anchovies. Sure, they said and they handed me the fish wrapped in paper. I prepared all the ingredients and the dressing which was made with raw egg yolk, lemon and mustard and laid it all out including some of the anchovies which I decided I was going to grill. Elizabeth Taylor ordered the Caesar salad as predicted and so I carefully dressed the salad and topped it with grilled anchovies and sent it out on the trolley with a junior waiter.

When the salad was served the restaurant manager immediately checked it and saw this lovely looking salad topped with… sardines!! Apologising he went to remove the salad but Ms Taylor stopped him. “How creative” she said, “I much prefer sardines to anchovies.” And that’s when the famous Caesar salad was re-invented by Chef Steven Saunders! The restaurant manager was furious, the fish section thought it was hilarious as they knew that I wouldn’t know what an anchovy looked like! (I was only about 18). A few weeks later I bumped into the restaurant manager in the kitchen lift and he grinned disapprovingly at me and said … ”How is Senior Cardini’s salad these days?” Wonderful Sir, especially better with the addition of sardines! “Cheeky boy,” he said …” you’ll never get anywhere!”

Senior Cardini’s Caesar Salad ... with Sardines! The original recipe has a raw egg to make the dressing but as this can be dangerous these days, I have replaced it with mayonnaise.

Ingredients 1 romaine lettuce 1 small loaf of yesterday’s (slightly stale) French bread cut into 1cm dice 1 small bottle of good extra virgin olive oil 3 garlic cloves peeled and blanched in boiling water for three minutes 3 garlic cloves blended with 3 or 4 tablespoons of olive oil to create a garlic oil 6 anchovy fillets 8 small sardines scaled and washed 1 whole lemon juiced 1 flat tablespoon of Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 150g fresh par mesan cheese curled with a potato peeler

1 tablespoon of mayonnaise Maldon salt and freshly ground pepper to taste Method Wash the lettuce, spin dry it afterwards so that it has no water left on it and then cut it into approx 1 cm slices and reserve in the fridge. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Put the croutons onto an ungreased baking sheet and brush the croutons with a little garlic oil and season with some Maldon salt and bake until crispy approx 15 minutes then reserve on kitchen paper. Crush the blanched garlic and the anchovies together in a bowl and then add the lemon juice and the Worces-

ter sauce and then the mustard and mix well in. Gradually add two tablespoons of the olive oil and season well with salt and freshly milled black pepper and then finally add the mayonnaise and reserve. Put the lettuce leaves into your salad bowl and then the dressing from the bowl and toss well together. Toss the croutons through the salad and top with curls of fresh parmesan cheese. Grill the sardines whole, with a little olive oil and Maldon salt until cooked and serve them on top of the salad. Drizzle the salad with a little more olive oil and a squeeze of lemon and serve in the centre of the table.

AS I’m writing this, it’s the end of a very historic day. The day the temporary law came into force and it became compulsory we wear these oppressive facemasks in busy public places. I thought I would tell you all about my extremely traumatic experience of Day 1, wearing the ghastly mask… Well, quite Frankly, the new law made sod all difference to me. I’ve happily worn one in public places for the last two months, regardless. It’s not traumatic, oppressive (blah blah) in the slightest. It was the same as any other day! I’m well aware the jury is out on the effectiveness of wearing a mask for yourself. But my theory has always been to act like I have the virus. To put as much of a barrier between myself and frontline staff/public as possible - because I could be an unknown carrier.

HERE comes summer! The air is warming up and it will soon be time for everyone to start lighting up those barbecues. All over Spain, men will be crawling over each other to pop on a pinny and do the cooking! We’ll be inviting friends round to the house for afternoon sessions of cheap booze, burnt bangers and steak that you could use to line the bottom of your shoe. This is one time of the year that the man of the house takes over and does the cooking. It’s the only sport where a fat bald man is God! Let’s just take a look at what really happens! It’s the lady of the house that buys the food. She spends a few hours in the kitchen preparing the salads to go with the meat, a tangy coleslaw or some garlic potatoes. After that, she tenderises the meat and soaks it in various marinades, placing it on a tray with all the utensils laid out. She takes all the food outside and sets it up ready for cooking while the man lazes back in his chair having a beer with the guests.

All of a sudden Mr Masterchef bursts into action. Oh yes, the self-appointed expert takes over. With a swish of his spatula and a flip of his fork the sizzling begins. As the food is cooking the lady brings out the crockery and the bread and lays it all out for everyone. A good time is had by all. Various overcooked meats are piled high like some sort of edible work of art for everyone to help themselves. Once the feast has been finished and the last burger has been eaten, the lady of the house clears away the dishes. Off she goes to the kitchen. The contented throng of guests all praise the man on his cooking skills and thank him for all his hard work. They tell him how difficult it must have been to cook in such extreme heat, poor thing! He then asks his wife how she enjoyed her day off from doing the cooking and when he sees her perplexed reaction he concludes that there is just no pleasing her. Have a great summer and enjoy the barbie folks!

Mask it, or casket? Your choice? The masks are proven to help protect other people. I’ve heard many people moan about wearing them. They say “you can’t breathe properly” - you can, I’ll tell you what - wait until you have Covid, then you’ll really know what it’s like not to breath properly! Other excuses - “it’s a violation of my rights” - so dramatic, what about the rights of those you could infect? “You can choke from your own C02” - ridiculous, I haven’t in the last two months, nor do doctors and nurses; they’re only dangerous if you do high intensity exercise with them on. “I haven’t time to be putting them on and taking them off” - give over, it takes two seconds each move. “Why should I be told what to wear?” - well, there is another choice, you don’t have to wear one if you don’t go out. “You touch your face more” - rubbish. It’s a reminder that you have something on your face and not to touch it.

FACE MASKS: Wearing one is the very least we can do!

“It’s too hot in the sun” - no it’s not, they’re very lightweight and it’s actually better for the skin to have a shield from the sun’s damaging rays. There are more lame excuses I roll my eyes at. Unless you have chronic breathing problems, there are no viable excuses for flouting this law. The sooner the pandemic is completely under control, the sooner we can all go back to enjoying the freedom we miss, and the masks can come off! No one is asking us to go and fight in the trenches or climb up Everest. It’s very easy; stay indoors as much as possible, wash your hands, keep a distance from others when out and if you can’t - wear a mask. It’s a very small effort to help protect the elderly and vulnerable members of society and help prevent healthcare workers treating more sick people. It’s the very least we owe them. Stop being so damn selfish! Wear a mask, or more of them will be in the caskets!

Round the world for cancer EURO WEEKLY NEWS spoke exclusively to Chris O’Hare who, along with his wife Gabriella, is cycling across the world to raise funds for charity Prevent Breast Cancer. The brave and kindhearted couple are currently locked down in Thailand on a beautiful little island called Phi Phi where they can swim to catch their own dinner and their home is a tent erected inside a cave. The couple set out two years ago and have cycled 21,300 km across 27 countries so far. Along the way they have promoted their cause, however, due to the coronavirus crisis limiting people’s income, donations to Prevent

Breast Cancer have dropped drastically. “We have only managed to raise £11,000 so far which the charity is very happy with, but we really feel like we could do more,” said Chris. Prevent Breast Cancer, based in Manchester, is the only UK charity funding ground-breaking research solely aimed at preventing breast cancer

for future generations. EWN first spoke to the couple when they were living in a motor home in Torrox, Malaga Province and training in Spain for their big event. Chris also stressed that “the trip is all self-funded as we sold up in the UK. Every penny that is donated goes directly to the charity.”
