However, to enter the new normality and help get Spain back on track with its typical tourism and livelihood we need to show the world that we live in a safe environment and welcome visitors with open arms. The best way to show them this is if we, the residents, make the next step, the step outside. We need to support the local businesses that keep the tourism sector alive. Businesses have already tried to reopen but with low footfall, it has pushed them back into hiding reinforcing the fear they have of failing. We should not let them fail. We want them to come back

Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez has assured there will be a holiday season this summer and the government has proposed to lift quarantine requirements for international tourists from July 1. So, if they are coming, now is the time to get ready, let’s give them something to enjoy when they get here after these months of confusion. Something to lift their spirits and something to show that we have won the war against this virus. We have come so far and worked so hard to reach this point, that it would be foolish to take a step in the wrong direction. Working together is of utmost importance so we can ensure that Spain is a safe destination for all our families, loved ones, and friends to come and visit or live in.

National Mourning SPAIN has declared that once all territories are in Phase 1 the nation will have an official 10-day mourning period, the most prolonged length in the history of its democracy. However, many have been left wondering, what does this national mourning mean? One of the

most significant changes will be all the half-mast flags in public buildings and ships. In interior spaces it is common to see the flag appear with a black crepe. Furthermore, there will be a posthumous tribute to symbolise the victims fallen by Covid-19 chaired by the Prime Minister himself.

Kickstart trade MORE than 300 traders and shops in Oliva have been offered online training to reactivate local commerce. Oliva Town Council is offering six free digital training workshops to the town’s traders as part of measures announced by Councillor of Commerce, Yolanda Balaguer, last week to reactivate local trade. Organised in collaboration with the

Association of Oliva Traders, ACCO, the aim is to “provide digital tools and strategies to Oliva retailers in order to adapt the local business to the new needs arising from the Covid-19 health crisis by means of its digitalisation.” The initiative started on May 26, and an online application form to take part will be published on the council’s website and ACCO social networks.

SME support ALICANTE Provincial Council has allocated €94,000 of a €6 million budget to Javea Council to help small to medium businesses and selfemployed ‘suffering due to the pandemic.’ The aim is “to avoid, as far as possible, the closing of businesses and to increase employment,” said the local authority, which will be responsible for processing and awarding the grants to potential beneficiaries.

Award Winner THE way that some people have gone out of their way to help their struggling community over the last two months has been mind-blowing. Kara Caradas is one of those people, so it comes as no surprise that she has been nominated for this special recognition award throughout our footprint of Spain - Gibraltar to Valencia and the Balearics. For those who didn’t know her before, she is the fearless leader of the Costa del Sol’s Food Fairies. For many others she is the owner of The Boardwalk in Marbella, and you probably saw her on Sky News, discussing the plight of Costa restaurateurs. In each of these roles, Kara’s massive, caring and giving heart shines through. What motivates her to help those in need? “I have always done it, it’s in my nature. When I was 16 I used to take meals to the homeless in the street,” she told me when she visited us at the Euro Weekly News. Kara also runs a project that finds jobs for children from Malaga orphanages or employs them in the restaurants she and her sisters own. “These children have no rights in the government’s eyes, but if they become employed, then they have a purpose and can later apply for residency,” Kara told me. “The project also helps the children buy school clothes, glasses or save up for a special day at the beach or the Aqua Park, the things other kids take for granted.” I asked if Kara had a mantra that gets her through the day but instead of a mantra she told me a story that pushes her to do her best. “One of the first houses I visited during the crisis was a new mother. As she had not eaten for days her breast milk had dried up so she could not feed her child,” Kara recalled. “To be able to feed both that woman and her baby was enough to make me want to go on helping.” Kara and her family are very close and it’s hard to find a photograph where they are not together. Her sister Penny owns The Harbour and The Playwright restaurants, whereas Charley co-owns The

certainly not have survived the recent crisis, not that you would ever hear Kara say this. Nor could it have been easy to witness, despite knowing that they were bringing joy to so many families. Inez Robinson from Last Chance Animal Rescue, who has worked with Kara many times, was full of praise for her friend. “A few years ago she helped massively

She will go to the ends of the earth to help someone, whether they be animal or human, and her generosity is boundless.” Kara was nominated by the business people of the expat community as the greatest motivator and instigator of similar projects throughout the regions. She is a beautiful personality who radiates good energy and is hopeful that her restaurant, The Boardwalk, will open again soon and she can let her hair down at a big party. However, when the crisis finally passes it will be business as usual for Kara and she won’t stop helping those who need it: “It’s in my nature,” she said simply. Her strength brings to mind another strong and influential woman, Audrey Hepburn who said “As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.” The American civil rights activist Rosa Parks once said, “One person can change the world” and on the Costa del Sol, Kara is that one person. She is changing the world constantly for many people, changing their lives for the better. Rosa Parks also said, “Each person must live their life as a model for others” and what better role model than Kara, someone who does her utmost for others and finds happiness through making others happy. Kara brought light when there was darkness, hope where there was fear, unity where there was solitude and a purpose for the whole madness. She is without doubt the holder of the title THE PRINCESS OF THE PEOPLE’S PAPER.

Wild boar crashes dent after a wild boar crossed her path on the AP-7 at Ondara. The driver was transferred to the Francesc de Borja Hospital in Gandia. At around 7.20am, a similar acci-

BUSY WEEKEND: Alicante police closed bars and fined restaurants. POLICE in Alicante closed three bars and fined nine restaurants in the city for breaching Phase 1 regulations on Saturday night. In a statement, the local authority said: “The Security Department of the City Council reports that in the operation organised at the weekend by the Local Police of Alicante, on Saturday, a total of 31 complaints for disobedience were received, of which about 20 were for not keeping the distance between groups and not wearing the mandatory safety mask in violation of State of Alarm measures to address the Covid-19 pandemic.

Late opening BARS, restaurants and hotels in Benidorm can now keep their terraces open for an extra two hours after the town hall authorised an extension until 1am. Establishments have had to close at 11pm in Phase 1 until now. The move was agreed after a meeting between the Department of Commerce and professional associations Abreca-Cobreca during which members “verified the excellent performance by companies and residents with regards to the schedules and regulations.” But essentially, the agreement and the extension of opening times was driven by the decision of the Generalitat Valenciana not to apply for passage on to Phase 2, which had been planned by the hospitality sector. The Department of Commerce encourages businesses and the public to “maintain compliance with the measures of self-protection and continue with the civic behaviour of employers and neighbours to complete the transition of this phase.”

Wave of support APPLICATIONS to become volunteers in El Campello's Civil Protection are on the up and four new recruits have already joined the crew. It appears the "decisive role of support to the community... has unleashed a wave of public and sincere gratitude towards the volunteers of the Civil Protection detachment of El Campello," said the council in a statement. As a result, in recent weeks four people have joined as new volunteers, three of them for the duration of the pandemic and a fourth with a firm decision to stay. "As many requests await their imminent incorporation into the service," said Councillor for Security, Rafa Galvañ.

The postponement will benefit the 424 registered establishments, which can request a deferment for invoices issued between May and August. towns and cities is “fundamental” to promote and guarantee an intelligent and safe tourism, “and will be a protagonist in the relaunch of a key sector, both for its economic weight and its contribution to social and territorial cohesion.” The DTI Network was established in February 2019 to promote a new framework of reference to strengthen the competitiveness of the Spanish tourism model. El Campello will now be eligible for specific subsidies that are annually granted by the Autonomous Secretary of Tourism.

SINCE El Campello entered Phase 1 of Spain’s de-escalation on May 18, the number of fines for failing to comply with the rules of State of Alarm has plummeted. According to Security Councillor, Rafa Galvañ (PP), “the recovery of part of the freedom of movement and the partial opening of shops and terraces, has gone hand in hand with strict compliance by the population and businesses.” In the last seven days, a dozen sanc-

tions have been imposed, mainly for swimming in the sea, lying on the beach or for some isolated gatherings of of people without masks. From March 14 until today, Galvañ said “the proposals for sanctions sent to the Government Sub-delegation amount to 379.” The council “congratulates citizens for their behaviour” and calls for “maintaining the level of public collaboration to curb the health pandemic.”

Crash hotspot AN Alicante road has been named as one of the top five accident hotspots in Spain according to new survey by the Linea Direct Foundation. The study places a section of the CV-821, which runs from San Vicente del Raspeig to Santa Faz, among the most dangerous in the country. Parts of the CV-821 has one of the highest concentration of accidents on conventional roads, according to data from 2018. The section from kilometre 5 to 8 registered 11 accidents with 11 victims, all of whom were slightly injured, according to the report. The study calculates average daily traffic intensity and the accident rate and points out that the road in Alicante ‘crosses urban areas with the consequent risk for pedestrians, has incorporations and crossings, limits between 50 and 80 km/h and high traffic of motorcycles.’

Curtain call A COSTA BLANCA couple have called it a day after two months of streamed performances to keep spritis high in Vall de Pop during lockdown. With the move into Phase 1 on May 11, Vall de Pop U3A members Jo and Pete Cleary brought their innings of 57 different costumes and different songs streamed online to an end on May 10, with a final performance as ‘themselves.’ Every day since March 15, the couple have put on their make-up and costume and performed a different song to keep everyone entertained. Travel quarantine won’t last SPAIN’S Tourism minister Reyes Maroto declared that the quarantine period for foreign arrivals would not outlast the State of Alarm. Speaking during an Onda Cero interview, Maroto urged foreign tourists, especially those from France and Germany to visit Spain. Her statement was a indirect comment on France’s Environment minister Elisabeth Borne who recommended shunning Spain this summer owing to border controls and quarantine. THE coronavirus is killing many more poorer people in Spain, compared to the wealthy. That’s according to a survey in the northeast region of Catalonia produced by a health inequality group. The study by a regional health department institute cross-checked Catalonia’s coronavirus cases and fatalities up to May 7 against age and incomes. In the 45 to 64 age range, the study showed a mortality rate of 100 per 100,000

Grandparents can’t wait to hug grandkids GRANDPARENTS in Spain can’t wait until they can give their grandchildren a hug once again when the lockdown finally comes to an end, a new study shows. The survey of over-55s by a leading nappy manufacturer revealed that enforced confinement at home and physical separation from their families have made grandmas and granddads around the country miss their grandkids more than anything else. No less than 83 per cent said what they most want to do when the coronavirus crisis situation is eventually under control is to cuddle the grandchildren, while 66 per cent are looking forward to giving the grandkids a kiss. Psychologist Silvia Alava explained to Spanish press that grandparents “are reference figures for their grandchildren because they give them love, tenderness, confidence and time. “Hugging and physical contact are essential for them and others,” she said. Grandparents taking part in the survey were asked what it is about their children which makes them happy. Interestingly some 45 per cent of survey participants said they believed their main role in their grandchildren’s lives is to spoil them and make them feel loved.

The couple set out two years ago and have cycled 21,300 kms across 27 countries so far. Along the way they have promoted their cause, however, due to the coronavirus crisis limiting people’s in-

come, donations to Prevent Breast Cancer have dropped drastically. “We have only managed to raise £11,000 so far which the charity is very happy with, but we really feel like we could do more,” said Chris. Prevent Breast Cancer, based in Manchester, is the only UK charity funding ground-break-

ing research solely aimed at preventing breast cancer for future generations. EWN first spoke to the couple when they were living in a motor home in Torrox, Malaga Province and training in Spain for their big event. Chris pointed out that “being close to Malaga airport meant that Gabriella was able to

fly home to the UK to receive her treatment.” Gabriella had sadly been diagnosed with breast cancer and had undergone a double mastectomy and was receiving chemothera-

For these purposes, it should be understood that a few days ago, on May 5, 2020, the consolidated text of the Spanish Bankruptcy Law (RDL 1/2020), which includes the rules of private international law in its articles 721 and following, was approved. In addition, the REGULATION (EU) 2015/848 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of May 20, 2015 on insolvency proceedings must also be taken into account. In relation to the recognition of foreign insolvency proceedings in Spain and the coordination of insolvency proceedings

that can be opened in Spain with those opened abroad, article 721 of the Spanish bankruptcy law, says it will not be applied when there is a lack of reciprocity or cooperation on the part of the authorities of the corresponding country. International jurisdiction In principle, according to article three of the European regulations, the courts of the Member State within the territory of which the centre of the debtor’s main interests is situated shall have jurisdiction to open insolvency proceedings (‘main insolvency proceedings’). The centre of main interests shall be the place where the debtor conducts the administration of its interests on a regular basis. In the case of a company or legal person, it would normally be considered the address of the

registered office whilst for an individual undertaking an independent business or professional activity, it would be the principal place of business. For cases involving individuals, it would usually be their habitual residence In addition, with regards to the possibility of opening another secondary or territorial insolvency proceeding, the regulation states that other countries (other than where the centre of main interests is located) may open insolvency proceedings with respect to the debtor, provided that the debtor has an establishment within that country. Likewise, it is relevant to point out that the Spanish bankruptcy law in article 743 foresees the possibility of recognising the administrator, insolvency practitioner or representative of the bankrupt or insolvent entity, appointed in the

main bankruptcy process abroad, with the same functions recognised in accordance to the rules of the country where the bankruptcy was commenced, provided that Spanish law is respected in the exercise of such activity. Lockdown depression SPAIN’S children are suffering increased levels of depress i o n c a u s e d b y t h e c o ro n avirus lockdown according to a leading children’s charity. Statistics have been published which say that 17 per cent of youngsters have felt low during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a larger percentage in economically-struggling families. The stark figures come from a survey conducted by Save the Children in April, at the height of Spain’s State of Alar m lockdown. Save the Children said its April findings had an upside over the lockdown in that many families RESIDENTS of the Moratalaz district in Madrid clashed during a noisy ‘cacerolada’ protest on May 20. People carrying Spanish flags and banging pots and pans to show their anger at decisions taken by President Pedro Sanchez’s administration came up against a bunch who opposes their protest action.

tensions were high. People turned out on the streets in several locations, demanding “freedom” and calling for the national administration to resign. There was a heavy police presence to ensure

protestors stayed at least two metres apart from each other and to prevent roads ending up blocked to traffic. There have also been protests over government actions on the pandemic in Spanish cities, including Salamanca, Valencia, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Logroño and Guadalajara.

Is time running out for tax-free pension transfers? With all that’s been going on, it is easy to forget that the Brexit transition period is still due to end in just a few months, on 31 December. Reassuringly, if you are lawfully settled in Spain before then, you will be able to enjoy uninterrupted residence rights. But with no certainty beyond 2021, there are still many unknowns. If you are already retired or planning to retire, this is the time to review your pension options - before the rules potentially change.

The option to transfer overseas Transferring to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) can consolidate several UK pensions under one tax-efficient roof and unlock other benefits. As well as immunity from UK taxation on income and gains, you could enjoy more freedom to vary income and draw funds in your currency of choice, with more estate planning flexibility. Currently, most expatriates in the EU can transfer to a QROPS

completely tax-free, but there are two key situations in which tax is payable. First, if your combined UK pension benefits exceed the UK’s lifetime allowance (LTA) - currently £1,073,100 - you would face a 25% tax penalty on anything transferred over the limit, even if you are non-UK resident. Once in a QROPS, funds would never be subject to LTA charges again. Second, if you transfer to a QROPS based outside the

EU/EEA (European Economic Area), the UK applies a 25 per cent ‘overseas transfer charge’ on the whole transferred amount. While expatriates can escape this tax by transferring to a QROPS based in an EU/EEA country, this may change with Brexit.

What you need to consider Without a guarantee that tax-free transfers will continue, it is sensible for anyone considering transferring to act sooner rather than later. Timing is especially important as the process for pension transfers can take several months.

A closing tax-free window? As Brexit eliminates Britain’s EU commitments, including freedom of movement for capital, the Treasury gains more scope to recoup revenue from UK nationals abroad. Many expect this will prompt wider penalties on pension transfers, even within the EU. While the government has reassured that expatriates will keep the right to make overseas transfers post-Brexit, it has stopped short of making any tax promises. However, the legislation for the overseas transfer charge already includes the ability to capture all transfers - the government would just need to remove the EU/EEA exclusion.

However, it cannot be overemphasised that transferring is not appropriate for everyone. Also, all QROPS are not the same there are differences between providers and jurisdictions that can affect the benefits. Alternative investment structures could offer expatriates in Spain comparable benefits to QROPS, so take personalised, regulated advice to establish the most suitable approach for you. Pensions are likely to play an important part in your long-term financial security, so it is crucial to only use a fully authorised and regulated provider. An alarming number of people have lost retirement savings through pension scams or by reinvesting in

failed, unregulated investments that offer no protection. Your adviser should take into account your unique circumstances, income requirements, goals and tolerance for risk - as well as the cross-border tax implications - to establish the right solution for you and your family. Even if transferring is not right for you, with still so much uncertainty ahead, now is the time to review your pension arrangements so you can secure the retirement of your choice in Spain, whatever Brexit brings. EL FARO: Popular walking route. EL FARO, Albir’s Lighthouse is now totally accessible for all members of the public. Until now it has been possible to cover the 2.5-kilometre route in a wheelchair but it was more difficult to reach the picnic areas and rest areas. These have now been paved with anti-slip surfaces thanks to cooperation between Alfaz’s town hall, the regional government’s Environment department

and the management of the Sierra Helada national park where the Lighthouse is located. All slopes and unevenness are signposted and both Alfaz Town Hall, the Sierra Helada park’s employees and the Generalitat have worked together to eliminate the former restrictions which prevented those with mobility problems from accessing all sections of the El Faro route.

Big donation SOCIAL volunteers in Alfaz received 1.5 tons of food and hygiene supplies from the Guardia Civil in Altea. The Guardia Civil officers have been raising money for those most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, providing a total of more than five tons of provisions distributed in Altea, La Nucia and Polop as well as Alfaz.

Still in touch ALFAZ Town Hall continues to maintain direct contact with the municipality’s foreign residents and groups and associations with online meetings. During the latest of these virtual encounters, Other Nationalities councillor Martine Mertens as usual gave out information, listened to suggestions and cleared up doubts, practically all them related to the Covid-19 crisis. “It’s necessary to provide clear and direct information to residents regarding de-escalation, the different phases and what is recommendable and what is not, always with general well-being in mind,” Mertens said. Many of Alfaz’s nonSpanish residents are elderly and it was the town hall’s obligation to be especially receptive at present, the councillor added. Her next online meeting will be held during the first week of June, Mertens announced, while thanking the groups and associations for their support and collaboration which was so important in helping to overcome the present crisis.

Don’t throw it THE Education departments in Alfaz and parents’ associations at the town’s five state schools are launching an IT equipment bank. This will provide a supply of the appliances that have become vital for children’s schoolwork since schools closed during the State of Alarm. “Very often equipment that we no longer use ends up in the rubbish when it could be given a second chance,” said Alfaz’s Education councillor Dolores Albero. The project has three fundamental social, environmental and economic aspects, Albero said. Socially it unites donors and pupils, environmentally the scheme promotes recycling and it helps economically because all the donated mobile phones, tablets, laptops and computers will be reconditioned or repaired locally.

Head-on crash

THE road between Javea’s Pinosol and Cami Vell de Granadella was temporarily closed following a collision between two vans. Together with the Local Police and an ambulance, the fire brigade was sent to the scene although it was not necessary, as originally feared, to free the drivers. Although one man was injured, a check-up revealed that his injuries were not serious.

Aggressive brawl

PRISON VIOLENCE: Inmates flooded their cells and barricaded all entrances. A CORRECTIONAL centre in Cordoba has had a rough 48 hours of violence which began on Saturday May 23 with an attempt to begin a riot in the M10 wing of the prison as the inmates flooded their cells using soapy water and barricaded all entrances with their mattresses. After destroying the furniture, they rallied inmates to ‘rise up’ and

fight the prison officers. However, the guards were able to keep the potential riot under control. The next day prison officers were alerted to a disturbance at around 8.00pm in the isolation wing of the facility. Upon entering the cell from which they suspected a disturbance, the prison officers were attacked with a bucket of water

mixed with bleach which if they had not been equipped with the correct protective material could have seriously injured them. The inmate had a glass shard which he used as a weapon after smashing the light in the ceiling and threatened to kill the officers. After a slight struggle the prisoner was restrained and relocated to solitary confinement.

AIR TRAVEL: Airlines are getting ready to start flying again. RYANAIR and easyJet are gearing up for a return with new air travel guidelines for passengers using Spanish airports. The guidelines have been issued by the European Union to keep passengers and aircrew safe when services resume after the coronavirus pandemic travel restrictions are lifted. Ryanair plan to operate 40 per cent of their normal schedule from July, whilst easyJet on May 21 announced some mainly do-

mestic services will resume principally based on the UK and France will resume in mid-June. The EU report says that “Passengers are recommended to practise distancing, hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and use medical face masks, and to declare their Covid19 related status before receiving their boarding pass. “Passengers will also be asked to provide contact information to allow for

‘track and trace’ if someone on a particular flight later tests positive for Covid-19,” it added. The EU recommended particular air filter systems that have been shown to be resistant to coronavirus particles and stated: “Aeroplane operators and airport operators should collaborate to ensure that passengers are not kept on board an aircraft without proper ventilation for longer than 30 minutes.”

The outlook once again seems to be difficult for Mr Sanchez and it looks very improbable for Mr Sanchez to be able to complete the de-escalation phases as the State of Alarm is essential for this. But for Mr Sanchez anything is possible.

I wanted to create a platform where the rules were to be kind and be nice to each other without spreading fear,” said Vicki. She now considers herself the “instigator” or “head girl” among the team of friends who helped her keep the page updated and grow to have 2,500 followers. “Many people have now increased their social circle through the group by sharing good, positive news. I know there are people who are alone who are scheduling their day around the page.” The page has included fun events like pop quizzes, competitions to win vouchers for local struggling businesses, exercise classes and any information that may help.” Vicki is a whirlwind of positive energy and hopes

WE were inundated with nominations for this married couple from Murcia, who created the Facebook page ‘Coronavirus in Spain-Information’ which has been a lifeline for people in their community. Adrian is originally from the UK and Paloma is from Spain, together they manage to translate and convey all the important information coming from the government which has helped to set people’s minds at ease. “When the State of Alarm was announced I uploaded a video I had recorded to my Key Style Properties page pointing

out what the decree meant. There were so many hits it has now reached 31,000 views. I decided to start a page that featured these types of videos and posted them every day for 46 days.” Upon watching the videos you can see how Adrian has built a trusting audience, he is down to earth, upbeat and certainly breaks down the barriers when it comes to firm and sometimes confusing governmental information and delivering it in a positive and comforting manner that dispels any fear. The page now has 11,

000 followers and Adrian and Paloma aren’t looking to wind things up when the crisis cools off. “I would like to keep the page as an informative guide to Spain. I have already started on some tutorials and would like to cover parts of Spanish lifestyle. Also, I am currently auctioning off specially made t-shirts to give the proceeds to charity.” It is amazing that the pair have been able to give up so much of their time as they are new parents to four-month-old Lily who has become a star in her own right. They are certainly a selfless and giving family.

Euro Weekly News asked you, the reader, to tell us about the fantastic people who have kept your community together during these trying times. Who has gone out of their way to provide for others? Who has helped make these frightening times more bearable? Who deserves some pampering? We l l , t h e f l o o d g a t e s opened and we have been inundated with emails from our readers so impressed by how certain that the page can continue to be a valuable resource for people that are struggling and even businesses. “The crisis has brought a community closer, until recently I didn’t even know my neighbours three doors down, but now we all come out to clap on our doorsteps and get through it together.”

John Sharples, Costa del Sol JOHN is a whirlwind of energy and humour and could put a smile on anybody’s face. With his personal Facebook page, he posts musings, poems and hilarious videos to lift people’s spirits. EWN received e-mails aplenty from his supporters and fans on the Costa del Sol who believe that he has given them something to look forward to by bringing the community together through entertainment on social media. John was eager to do food deliveries to help needy familes but was aware of the restrictions in movement, he explained, “I would let people know where my car would be parked and leave it unlocked so they could fill it with donated food. Then friends that I know who did the deliveries could pick the donations up from there.” John also runs the What’s on in La Cala de Mijas page where he has kept the community up-to-date with information on the virus and the news unfolding in the hope of dispelling any fear and setting people’s minds at ease. “I love helping people, thousands of people have followed the page now because they know they can get accurate news from there,” said John. Many of his followers would wait patiently for the live bingo he organised where he sent out hundreds of bingo cards for everyone to play, usually 200 or more people. Apart from his online presence, John has been helping different charities. He

has arranged with the local La Cala Lions organisation to provide jigsaws to those who need them to relieve the boredom of lockdown and has been collecting dog and cat food for ACE and taking it to the kennels in his van. John has started slowing the page down now and directed his followers towards the best news sources. “I want the page to get back to letting people know what is going on in the area and also to start helping local businesses and giving them a boost when they need it most.” There is one thing for sure, lockdown would have been very boring on the Costa del Sol had it not been for John Sharples.

Josefina Navarro, Axarquia UPON speaking with Josefina, or Fina as her friends call her, I immediately realised why so many people had been in touch singing her praises. She is a warm, caring woman who goes out of her way to make sure everybody else is ok. She has been a volunteer with the Red Cross in Granada for some time and is very aware of the number of people in need in the area. “There are so many people here who live alone, we help them write letters and try to cheer them up. I also have workshops which help them manage health and emotions,” she said. Many people pointed out how Fina has helped them with setting up in Spain whether it is to do with paperwork

He has stood out among all the members of his community for all the extra work he has done to help them during the health crisis. “When the State of Alarm started I created a small team of five people to help the old people in the a r e a . We w o u l d d o their shopping for them and deliver them face masks. We must have handed out between 30,000 and 40,000 masks to the community,” said George and added, “We also helped with Caritas food donations, delivering food to around 30 families in need.” George, a positive and cheer ful man originally from Mexico moved to Spain with his Scottish wife 19 years ago and brought up their three daughters here. He has not seen any of them since the lockdown began as they were out of town, but that does not stop him from spreading his positivity He has also recently become the secretary for a cat rescue association Kitty Kat Almanzora Valley. “I helped a couple create this association where they gather up street cats and have them treated, take care of their vet’s bills and I help translate all the paperwork.” Having spoken to George it is clear to see why he received so many nominations, he is both humble and grateful and admits that it is just in his nature to help people and he hopes to continue to help them long after the crisis is over.

When we spoke, Fina was making plans to take a member of the community to the hospital the next day, a man who had to have his foot amputated and she had selflessly been taking him food deliveries and checking up on him. She also has a WhatsApp group that allows her to keep in touch with the residents and greets them cheerfully to lift their spirits. It seems she has always been very caring. “In Venezuela when the doctors came from America to treat the children I would be the interpreter between them and the children’s families to make sure they were getting the correct information.” When the crisis is over Fina will continue helping with the Red Cross and has programmes planned with them. “Afterwards it will be tough but we can all get through it by helping each other.”

Karen Mailing Cowles, Costa Blanca North WHEN the State of Alarm was announced Karen was packing up for the night in her office “I remember it clearly, I got very emotional as it immediately made me realise how many families will go hungry.” That evening I spoke to a friend to work out what we could do. “I know how Spain works, people will not receive food parcels and I was very concerned for those who live day to day not knowing where the next meal is coming from, so we set up a food bank.” At the time Karen also thought it beneficial to have a group of translators on hand as there was so much information coming in that it could have become very confusing. She also began posting videos every day on her Facebook page to let people know what was going on and give messages of hope and support. With the help of her husband, they transformed their garage into a production line and food bank to put together food parcels for families. “The town hall would not allow anybody else in the area, apart from me, to leave the house. This meant that I was single-handedly shopping for and delivering to 56 families.” She also helped organise the fundraising page for Benidorm’s British Businesses Association Food Bank which currently holds €12,713. Through all her work she saw glimmers of positivity and put smiles on the faces of families. She even had one person tell her “Oh my goodness it feels like Christmas” as they were so relieved to receive what they needed.

Karen felt like a mother with an extended family. From it all, she believes it has created a caring community. “My community has been so, so impressive. They have gone above and beyond, all ages came together.” One thing that was especially touching is that along with some children for the village they wrote anonymous ‘notes of hope’ and added them to to the deliveries for the families to find. Karen pointed out that she will continue helping those who have suffered the knockon effects of the crisis “There’s no greater thing than giving,” she said.

FINANCE Laptop pricing WITH the lockdown in Spain, there has been a considerable increase in demand for laptops and many feared that this would lead to a rise in price as manufacturers took ad­ vantage of the situation. The director general of Lenovo Iberia, (a Chinese company which took over IBM’s PC business and is now the largest seller of laptops in the world), Alberto Ruano has said that the company will not increase prices unless the price of compo­ nents it uses goes up.

British government debts keep growing

THE latest figures from the UK Office of National Statistics (ONS) will make painful reading for the British government and Chancellor Rishi Sunak as borrowing for the month of April 2020 was £62.1 billion (€68.4 billion), the highest amount since records were first kept. It is easily understandable that this need for cash has been caused in the fight against Covid­19 as the government has stepped in to help guarantee furloughed employees wages whilst tax income has fallen by 26.5 per cent when compared to April 2019 receipts.

By John Smith Borrowing in the latest full finan­ cial year (April 2019 to March 2020) is estimated to have been £62.7 bil­ lion (€62.9 billion), £22.5 billion (€24.8 billion) more than in the pre­ vious financial year and as can be seen, April’s borrowings almost equate to the entire borrowing of the previous year. The ONS has indicated that these figures are estimates and will be ad­ justed as more information becomes available, but the inference is that they are likely to be higher rather than lower when finalised.

It was also announced that net public sector debt at the end of April 2020 was £1,887.6 billion (€2,076 bil­ lion) which equates to 97.7 per cent of GDP and it should be remembered that during the last financial crises, Spain was criticised by the European Union when its borrowing exceeded GDP for a while. Once the country has recovered from the virus that has affected so many, the British government is go­ ing to have a very difficult and po­ tentially longer job to try to get the economy back to a healthy condi­ tion.

The word denuncia simply means ‘report.’ It does not mean that the president is guilty of any infraction of the law. This would expose him to a possible lawsuit or even criminal charges. It is perfectly possible that these reports will come to nothing. In which case, the circumstances have not changed. If a court has issued a sentence for some offence, that would be another matter because it is in the public record.

O2 and Virgin Media THERE has been a great deal of bank interest in the proposed merger of 02 (a subsidiary of Span­ ish group Telefónica) and Virgin Media (a subsidiary of Liberty Glob­ al) in the UK with oversubscription for the €4.5 billion credit line. The funding is needed to finance the new operation and Spanish Banks Santander, BBVA and Caixa­ Bank have committed to loans as have international banks such as Barclays, BNP Paribas and Gold­ man Sachs. Using excess power STATE owned organisation ADIF is responsible for managing tracks and railway stations across Spain as well as ensuring there is sufficient electricity to power all of the rolling stock.

As it is generating more electricity than it needs, it has turned its attention to diverting this excess to create charging points for electric cars as there will be a demand for at least

300,000 points within the next 10 years and more than double that number longer term. It is now looking for a commercial partner to install these points.

Commons of 80, you would think that the government would be safe from losing any vote, but with some 50 Conservative MPs indicating that they could vote against the govern­ ment over the matter, it could see an embarrassing loss. The other problem is that once Britain leaves the European Union it needs decent trade deals with strong economic partners and President Trump has already warned that the involvement of Huawei could affect a deal with America. It appears therefore that although Boris Johnson can’t simply cut the Chinese company out completely in the short term, he now plans to fin­ ish their involvement by 2023. The American fears are that if in­ structed by the Chinese government, Huawei could conceivably disrupt se­ curity matters not just in the USA but with its friends and partners. There is also some concern that despite China’s apparent acceptance of a style of democracy, those in power are still controlling much of what happens and could easily start another ‘Cold War’ if it suited them.

BUSINESS EXTRA Green deal THE supply of renewable electricity to the nine motorways taken over by the Spanish government and managed by public company Seittsa has been awarded to Endesa. In return for a two-year contract worth €4.36 million, all electricity will be green.

Busy ports PORTS in Spain have not been adversely affected by the lockdown with Cadiz seeing a growth of 14 per cent over the same time last year and Cartagena being the most profitable with turnover of €50 million and profit of €19.3 million.

And have you also noticed how many of these so called intellectuals choose to spout their ‘locked down’ views against a background of shelves stuffed with books? Bearing in mind that most of us have, at the mere push of a button, access to just about every book ever published, is this supposed to instill into us some form of confidence, that those who have access to these ‘libraries’ are the ‘whizzes’ we need to give us the answers to all the tribulations that beset us? Give us a break. I’d like to see any one of them in the shoes of the British government able to do a better job. Most of us can hone in on a couple of problems and decide that we know better; but this situation has presented the gov-

UK GOVERNMENT: Needs the public’s encouragement. ernment with a whole multitude of unprecedented circumstances. Their decisions and actions have needed to traverse an almost unbelievable spectrum of ongoing difficulties, from the supply of paper masks and new laws to the balanced distribution of billions of pounds in their attempts to keep the country and its citizens from sinking into a morass of economic debt and despair. Medical conundrums, which

include testing and supplies, have created logistical nightmares that would challenge the finest managerial brains in the world. The pure mental strain and responsibilities have been enough to bring any normal bunch of individuals to their knees. Yet, despite the constant nit picking of the left, they have with calm dignity soldiered on, even though their own leader was incapacitated for some weeks. Well I for one think they

deserve far more credit than they are receiving. If anyone needed the encouragement and gratitude of a public they are obviously trying so hard to protect and serve, it is this government. A group of dedicated men and women, who, through no fault of their own, suddenly found themselves, forced into the front line of defence from an invisible attacking pestilence whose sole enemy is the

entire human race. For heavens sake, all of you trying to get brownie points, or reap cheap political advantage from this nightmare should be giving them all the support you can. Anything less makes you a part of the problem and most emphatically not a part of the solution. Another occurrence arising from all this mayhem is the reduction by 57 per cent of out- patients visiting A&E. Assuming around 10 per cent of these are genuine cases of those not wishing to visit for personal reasons, this leaves a huge section of people staying away with other maladies, which must include the drunks, hypochondriacs and the victims of street violence that usually jam the waiting rooms of these vital overworked departments. Let’s hope all these time wasters continue to see some sense when all this gets back to normal. But don’t hold yer breath!

A very narrow escape

DEPENDENT NATION DEAR Leapy Lee, I like your articles in EWN, in fact, it is the only bit apart from the puzzles I even bother with. Recently the headlines seem to only portray whining expats, mostly British. Two comments on this week’s article. I predict that there will be a spike in coronavirus in the UK around June 11, approximately 21 days after the end of Ramadan and the following Eid. The other comment is about UK being able to produce anything, This is more or less straight from Sun Tzu. How do you reduce a country’s capabilities and make it subservient? Provide a range of goods to them which is cheaper than their own home-produced goods. Wait 10 years and they will have lost the capability to produce them and many associated goods, their workforce will have a skills gap. Keep supplying enough goods cheaper than homeproduced goods and you eventually arrive at a nation who is dependent and ripe for effective subjugation or is no longer a threat. Coal, steel, and national defence goods need not be the first ones supplied. Look at what we are short of and where it is usually sourced from. Regards A follower

OUR VIEW Every man for himself IT seems reasonable to say the world has been extremely poorly served by those that should have been there to help - but have failed dreadfully. It is reasonable that we have put our government under intense scrutiny and, regrettably, in too many instances they have been found wanting. From selling vital PPE to overseas countries to the delay in ordering a lockdown, our political leaders emerge as well-meaning, hard-working, but extremely incompetent. If ever there was a time for a global organisation to seize control this was it; yet nobody has risen to the challenge. One of the main culprits has to be the World Health Organisation and some very questionable moves from its director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. In late January he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and went on to praise China for “setting a new standard for outbreak control” and commended the nation’s leaders for their “openness to sharing information.” The sinister truth was radically different. In Wuhan, the virus epicentre, Chinese police were busy arresting citizens who dared to tell the truth about the growing pandemic. There is no doubt that the WHO’s shocking lack of action and near collusion with the deceit from China allowed the virus to spread. Meanwhile, the United Nations’ major agencies have issued a graphic warning of a famine of ‘Biblical’ proportions and said this is the greatest challenge the world has faced since the Second World War. However, it has raised only around a quarter of the £3 billion it wants immediately to provide relief to 250 million people worldwide it fears are in imminent risk of starvation. It’s plain to see that when a ship is sinking it’s a case of every man for himself, and therefore it’s hardly surprising that countries across the planet are keeping hold of their cash to look after their own citizens.

Pen pals HELLO Leapy, Believe it or not, I have afforded myself time to sit down and read the EWN (May 7-13 ). Seldom do I get inspired to put ‘pen to paper’ about political issues, instead, I spout off to my, long-suffering wife, to vent my frustrations! You could not have spoken truer and wiser words with reference to the, predominantly, left-wing inspired BBC. Personally, I don’t think it stops with the BBC, but it is certainly dominated by them. As tax-paying citizens of a democratic country, we should demand unbiased, informative reporting, and, NOT anti-Conservative party mind games. Everyone is entitled to their political opinions but journalists have a duty to broadcast factual information that is not influenced by their own, or that of the giant organisations who pay their generally over-inflated wages, political persuasions. Save your face VIRAL PROTECTION: Create humidity and friction which causes irritation.

FACE masks slow the spread of coronavirus, however, they also create humidity, friction and heat which causes irritation. Still, the benefit of viral protection outweighs the temporary risks to your skin. Tweaks to your skincare regimen can help prevent and treat mask-induced issues. Avoid wearing make-up beneath a face mask to prevent further occlusion of the pores. Do, however, apply sunscreen, as UVA and UVB rays can penetrate a mask. One of the most common face mask irritations is acne. Breakouts happen when pressure from the mask traps oil

and skin in the pores. Treatments with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can be worn under a mask to treat stubborn blemishes. Pressure to pores can cause folliculitis which occurs when hair follicles become inflamed and infected. Men should leave a small amount of stubble to prevent ingrown hairs. Avoid the temptation to squeeze bumps, as you might push the infection deeper. Allergic contact dermatitis presents with an itchy, red, flaky rash, often limited to the area of contact. Take breaks from wearing your mask, but only when it is safe to do so.

Make-up measures THERE are currently no published studies that examine how long the virus can live on or in cosmetic products. However, studies suggest that the virus can live on plastic sur faces

for up to 72 hours. So, plastic make-up tubes, bottles and compacts can be a concer n for transmission of the virus. Given that cosmetics are one of the germiest

items we use, there’s no doubt they are subject to contamination. This is especially true of lip products which makes it important to clean and store them carefully. Mascara, eyeshadow and eyeliner are also at risk, as they interact directly with the eye area. This makes it important to approach eye make-up products of all kinds with caution, and leave them at home if possible. If you have been sick or suffered from symptoms of Covid-19, then you must throw away all cosmetics that have been used. If you have fully recovered from Covid-19 and want to practise better hygiene habits going forward, take the time to disinfect your products daily in order to decrease your risk for contamination.

It’s a marathon not a sprint! Healing for the long run MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED

IT’S important to give yourself time to recover and really heal after a mental breakdown, whatever your final diagnosis may be… whether its bipolar, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, etc. Imagine the time it takes to heal a broken bone. If you fell down the stairs and broke your ankle, would you expect to get up and walk within a few days? Probably not. In fact, society would help you take the time you need to heal. “Don’t rush things! Stay off that ankle until it heals. Here, let me help you with that!” The image of your leg in a plaster helps people associate the injury with the need to take it easy and let nature work its magic. Oh, how different it is when we fall off the wagon of life because of a mental breakdown or in my case after a b i p o l a r episode. We all try to ‘get back to normal’ way too quickly, and often the result is another mood swing to knock us down once again, and it tends to hit us harder than the original episode. Mood swings exhaust the mind and the body. Leaving you feeling weak and exhausted. Mine pick me up and throw me around like a rag doll. And like anyone who goes through a physical illness, I need time to recover in order to get my life back on track. After a mild episode it usually takes me two days to recover, stripping it back to basics with early nights, a no sugar diet, off the fizzy drinks and alcohol! After a bad episode it can make your body feel like it has run a marathon for a while (not that I have

ever ran a marathon, but it’s what I imagine it feeling like!) You’re emotionally and physically worn out. I’ve learned that true healing is not just about getting rid of mood swings; it’s about letting the brain and body get back on track over time. Trying to get back too quickly after such a draining experience can lead to a vicious cycle of never healing fully - and being more susceptible to another collapse. Society expects so much from us. I still expect way too much of myself. If I don’t take the time I need to heal, my bipolar may go away for a while - but it doesn’t go far, and not for long. Mood swings and episodes bash away at my day to day functioning, ability to work, relationship stability, and even my immune system... YES, I know the feeling of “I have to get back to work or I will lose my job!” I wish we could come out of m o o d swings quickly and immedia t e l y pick up our lives, but we rarely do. Years of trying to manage my bipolar with a job and being a mother to a very active seven-year-old have taught me to think of my immediate needs and not to look so far into the future. I have built a life around my bipolar that works for me. When I break - and it happens - I give myself time to heal and get back on track! AS I’m writing this, it’s the end of a very historic day. The day the temporary law came into force and it became compulsory we wear these oppressive facemasks in busy public places. I thought I would tell you all about my extremely traumatic experience of Day 1, wearing the ghastly mask… Well, quite Frankly, the new law made sod all difference to me. I’ve happily worn one in public places for the last two months, regardless. It’s not traumatic, oppressive (blah blah) in the slightest. It was the same as any other day! I’m well aware the jury is out on the effectiveness of wearing a mask for yourself. But my theory has always been to act like I have the virus. To put as much of a barrier between myself and frontline staff/public as possible - because I could be an unknown carrier.

Mask it, or casket? Your choice? The masks are proven to help protect other people. I’ve heard many people moan about wearing them. They say “you can’t breathe properly” - you can, I’ll tell you what - wait until you have Covid, then you’ll really know what it’s like not to breath properly! Other excuses - “it’s a violation of my rights” - so dramatic, what about the rights of those you could infect? “You can choke from your own C02” - ridiculous, I haven’t in the last two months, nor do doctors and nurses; they’re only dangerous if you do high intensity exercise with them on. “I haven’t time to be putting them on and taking them off” - give over, it takes two seconds each move. “Why should I be told what to wear?” - well, there is another choice, you don’t have to wear one if you don’t go out. “You touch your face more” - rubbish. It’s a reminder that you have something on your face and not to touch it.

FACE MASKS: Wearing one is the very least we can do!

“It’s too hot in the sun” - no it’s not, they’re very lightweight and it’s actually better for the skin to have a shield from the sun’s damaging rays. There are more lame excuses I roll my eyes at. Unless you have chronic breathing problems, there are no viable excuses for flouting this law. The sooner the pandemic is completely under control, the sooner we can all go back to enjoying the freedom we miss, and the masks can come off! No one is asking us to go and fight in the trenches or climb up Everest. It’s very easy; stay indoors as much as possible, wash your hands, keep a distance from others when out and if you can’t - wear a mask. It’s a very small effort to help protect the elderly and vulnerable members of society and help prevent healthcare workers treating more sick people. It’s the very least we owe them. Stop being so damn selfish! Wear a mask, or more of them will be in the caskets!

A bit of business with the old man MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I’VE had enough of reading, watching, tracking and everything else about the pandemic so I’ve decided not to write about that for a couple of weeks. What I’ve decided is to tell you a couple of stories that will eventually go into the book that supposedly I will write one day. My dad was a London Eastender. He was a bit of a criminal but not a very good one because he kept getting caught and finished up in prison. In fact, till I was about five I thought he worked in the post office because I always saw him behind a glass partition when mum said we are going to see dad at work today. I also had a lot of ‘Uncles’ that used to come round and discuss a bit of business with the old man. My favourite was Uncle Sammy who always brought me sweets. On one occasion, when I was about seven, he came round with a lorry load of stuff for my dad. After a bit of chit

chat my dad said to me that Uncle Sammy was going to Southend and would I like to go with him and get some ice cream and keep him company. I say asked. He actually said to Sammy take the kid with you and buy him an ice cream. So off we went. Sammy delivered the stuff, I got my ice cream and I never gave it another thought until many years later when I was visiting my dad, who, by this time, was very ill with Parkinson’s. I told him I had this vague memory of this outing and asked my dad if my memory was correct. He laughed and said yes it was. I asked why it was funny and he then proceeded to tell me the reason I went. Uncle Sammy was a ridiculous gambler and couldn’t be trusted with money so my dad, in his infinite wisdom, decided that as he didn’t want to deliver this lorry load of stolen property himself he would give Sammy a ‘drink’ for delivering the stuff. He reckoned if he took me he’d have to bring me back and therefore wouldn’t be able to nick the money!
