Phase 1 allows us to go and visit friends and family in their homes, to give them a hug and tell them how much they mean to us in person after months of video calls. You can now take a long walk on the beach or in the countryside and take in the beauty of your surroundings after months of being pent up inside. You can pop into your neighbour hood busi-

Phase 1 vs Phase 2 MOST of Spain is currently in Phase 1 of the de-escalation plan, however, some areas such as La Gomera or El Hierro are currently in Phase 2. Seeing as regulations are constantly changing under new decrees, it is important to know the difference on what you are allowed to do within your phase and what you cannot do. Neither in Phase 1 or Phase 2 can you leave the province, mobility between provinces is still prohibited and is expected to recommence at a later date. In Phase 1 family and friends can hold reunions at homes, within the same province, of up to 10 people. These meetings should not include any vulnerable risk groups. Funerals and wakes will also be allowed for a limited number of people, 15 if its open-air and 10 if it’s in a

There will be preferential hours for customers over the age of 65. Street markets will commence with a quarter of its usual stalls and capacity
will be capped at 30 per cent. Also, in Phase 1 is the reopening of bars and restaurants’ terraces which is capped at 50 per cent. Phase 2 will be quite similar to Phase 1, the main difference being that it will accommodate for more people by increasing maximum
capacities. Places of worship and shops will amplify their capacity from 30 per cent to 50 per cent. Restaurants and bars with over 70sqm will begin serving clients inside at 30 per cent capacity and with table service only. Shopping centres will also re-open but at 40 per cent capacity but with no
common spaces. Theatres and cinemas will also reopen at 30 per cent capacity. The newest regulation to be announced under this phase is the reopening of swimming pools and beaches, which will also be controlled. Pools will be capped at 30 per cent capacity and beaches will have to ensure a two-metre distance between individuals. The maximum number of people allowed at the beach as a group is 15, unless these all live together. It is important to note that with these added freedoms comes an added sense of responsibility which we as citizens of a community must uphold. If sanitary conditions worsen or populations act irresponsibly then there is a possibility of being either held back in the same phase or even demoted to the previous phase.
Support in a crisis
A GROUP of expats from all nationalities, the Bilingüe El Campello Association, have made a further donation of food and hygiene products. The association has 225 members from 21 different nationalities living in the town, as well as Spaniards interested in learning English. The donation was presented to volunteers from the Civil Protection on behalf of Cáritas, which supports vulnerable people and families. Basic necessities are in great demand by the most vulnerable families, such as nappies, soups and sauces, coffee, milk, and cans of precooked food. First taste of Freedom THE nation has been almost at a standstill since the State of Alarm was announced on March 14. Imposed confinement forced us all to face unprecedented challenges, as we waited patiently to move towards a new normality - the first step to which came in the form of Phase 1 as half of the Costa Blanca North region were given new freedoms last Monday. So how has the last week been for those allowed to take walks, visit family (within the same health district) and other little things that were previously taken for granted. Mother-of-four, Fran Paxman is surprised how little her life has changed in the last week. “We couldn't wait for the news we were in Phase 1, I think we all thought everything would go back to normal, but to be honest not a lot has changed. “The kids are teenagers so they understand the situation, but other than getting out for exercise, they are carrying on as before. They are studying from home and constantly on their phones. “I work from home anyway, and don’t really go out drinking so other than going for a walk and shopping, I

I will feel more confident when we are in Phase 2 and 3.” Paul Head said the highlight of the last week has been catching up with friends. “My work means I’m always on the internet and social media, so I’ve been keeping in touch, but being able to meet up, even for an hour for a pint has been fantastic.
“The first time in a bar, well outside, felt quite strange after two months, but it was good to feel a bit more normal.” Family mediator Stuart Hanson won’t be rushing out in Phase 1 having contracted coronavirus and being bedridden for three weeks. “The virus is still out there and I will be taking the same precautions as before, everybody should. I spent three weeks in bed, it was horrible. I was exhausted, it was mainly massive fatigue and shortness of breath, but I’m young, fit and
healthy so it was a huge shock. What worries me is catching it again. “We live in a beautiful little village near Altea and have noticed a lot more people about. But at the moment there’s no vaccine and no real treatment for coronavirus, so I’ll be staying in for the time being. “I think until there’s a vaccine, it’s the least we can do for society.” Sue Nutbrown, President of Guardian Angels which supports single parents, is continuing to do what she has been doing throughout lockdown, supporting others. “Guardian Angels can’t go into lockdown, and in fact during this period we have taken on new clients and and we will continue to support our existing members.” She will also have time to meet friends made during lockdown. “On the first day of lockdown, knowing loneliness would potentially be a major factor for people, I set up a Facebook group called ‘Beat the virus and cabin fever.’ It’s a discussion group sharing jokes, memes, competitions and genuinely bringing people together and new friendships have been made.”
City Close to collapse A little normality links HOSPITAL and city links have been extended in El Campello, after Vectalia announced it’s increasing the frequencies of the intercity bus lines 21 and C53. The company, which runs the intercity bus service informed the council that with the entry of the health area in Phase 1 of deescalation, it is increasing the frequencies of lines 21 (El Campello-Alicante) and C53, which links to the San Juan hospital. Both lines saw their daily services reduced by up to 50 per cent from mid-April, and from Monday, May 18, they have resumed 70 per cent activity.
AN animal shelter ‘on the verge of collapse’ in La Nucia on the Costa Blanca is appealing for help rehoming ‘more animals than ever.’ Jessica Gommans, councillor for Animal Protection, said there are currenty 130 dogs and 70 cats to be rehomed: “Unfortunately during the State of Alarm the abandonment of dogs has continued with the handicap that the adoption service could not be restarted, due to the lack of mobility of people. “This has caused the animal shelter to have more dogs than ever before, close to collapse.

REOPENED: Benitachell’s Wednesday market. A LEVEL of normality has been restored in Benitachell as its Wednesday market reopened last week after nine weeks closure, with security measures in place. The council said: “The day passed with absolute normality and the safety rules were respected.” At the accesses, shoppers were given masks, hydroalcoholic gel and gloves and social distancing measures were marked clearly. Only food stalls are opening, offering fruit, veg and meats.

Javea U3A donation boosts charity GENEROUS Javea U3A members have donated a whopping €2,125 to its charity of the year, Make A Smile, to help them continue to function during the coronavirus pandemic. The money is made up of €685 of refunds from day trips, which Travel Group members decided to give to charity rather than take it back. It included one donation of €940 from one couple, who handed over the entire payment from the Cordoba trip, which was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Free parking ALFAZ DEL PI Council has begun preparing a plot of 3,000 sqm to create 190 new parking spaces next to the town’s commercial area in the central Avenida del País Valencia. Councillor for Urban Planning, Toni Such, said the project “will expand the current parking capacity of 2,315 places for public use. “The new public gravel parking lot has fixed boundaries and will be signposted and illuminated for its imminent opening. This work is in line with the urban development strategy laid down by the local government, through the improvement, fitting out or refurbishment of urban spaces for the use and enjoyment of the public, as well as promoting improvements in the area of mobility. With this new car park, Alfaz del Pi will have “2,500 free public parking spaces,” added Such.

VILLAJOYOSA Town Council will be given €144,779 by Alicante Provincial Council to provide aid and social benefits to the most vulnerable within the community amid coronavirus pandemic. This is part of a scheme to provide subsidies to municipalities with populations of
30,000 upwards. Asun Lloret, councillor for Social Welfare and Equality, said “there are many families who contact the Social Services every day asking for help and this allocation will allow us to strengthen the aid programmes of the town hall for these families.”
Marina emergency THE National Police, four Guardia Civil vehicles, an ambulance and a doctor's car were called to an incident at Mascarat on may 14 morning. Just before 11am, eye witnesses saw a rescue dinghy head off towards Albir coastline before returning, followed by a convoy of emergency
vehicles. It appears somebody "got into trboule" at sea. Eye witnesses were moved away from the scene as somebody appeared to be transferred to the ambulance at around 11.20am. No further information has been released.

Phased opening THE Cristóbal Zaragoza Municipal Library in Villajoyosa reopens its doors on Monday, May 18. For the moment, it will only be for returns, and from May 25 books can be borrowed on request. The library is currently open from 9am to 2pm, for loan returns, given the large volume of books not returned due to the State of Alarm. Once returned will then be quarantined for 14 days. At the movies DENIA Drive-In cinema - the oldest in Spain - is the first to show movies on the big screen again. To adapt to the new situation and de-escalation measures, management reduced the capacity to 30 per cent and food and drinks from the bar are served directly to the cars. With the big distributors closed and without premieres, the cinema broadcast films chosen by customers, said Carlos Miralles, founder and owner of the Drive-In in Denia. He compared the emotion of reopening to “that night of June 9, 1979, when after much work and effort, I fulfilled my dream
of opening this mythical drivein cinema, the oldest in Spain.” After a bleak two months, Miralles' screen was the first in Spain to screen movies again. “We have never closed for so long in the last four decades. These two months have been a tragedy for me. We want films that make us happy and that’s why we’re opening up,” he told Nius. One hundred moviegoers, mostly families and couples, from the inside of around 30 cars, were the first to enjoy the return of the cinema. “I hope this is the revival of our drive-in cinema,” Carlos said.

EL CAMPELLO has created coastline lanes to open up parts of the sea for water sports only in Phase 1 of de-escalation. The ‘channels’ have been lined out at Rincon de la Zofra, in front of the Montecarlo building, and CentroCarrer la Mar, in front of Calle Hernán Cortés, “so that professionals, members of the federation and amateurs over the age of 14 can swim in the sea.”
They must swim alone, and respect a safety distance of two metres between them. It will be compulsory for swimmers to wear a “particularly visible coloured cap” and carry inflatable swimming buoy. “Without these, access to the swimming areas, which are subject to specific schedules, will not be allowed,” said the council. “It is also allowed to practise surfing, rescue
and first aid, kayaking, canoeing or assimilated and sports rowing in individual boats. “But it is still forbidden to practise sport fishing or hunting with or without a boat, and motor boats cannot be used either.” Police will be especially vigilant to make sure the public comply with the rules, and the red flag will remain raised “because swimming is prohibited along the entire coast.”

Flood relief
FLOOD ALLEVIATION: The stretch is asphalted before normal traffic is restored. FLOOD prevention measures have been completed in Costa Blanca’s Finestrat, spelling the end of diversions. The council said the project is the “biggest hydraulic improvement scheme” carried out in the town, which will divert rainwater “from the historic centre to the River Antxero, thus avoiding the flooding that has previously occurred in the sports area of La Foia during intense rainfall.” Once the hydraulic work was finished, a 180-metre section of the road was asphalted to restore traffic and eliminate temporary detours. Finestrat mayor, Juan Francisco Pérez, visited the Cantereria district
with council representatives and said: “With this work we have the guarantee that the rainwater goes directly to the river, thus solving the problems of flooding that we suffered in this area every time it rained heavily. “And after several months of execution of the work, traffic has also been restored. So we are grateful for the patience and understanding of residents during this time.” The project cost €445,000, paid for through an agreement with the water service concessionaire, Hidraqua. And the town hall is now working on a €200,000 redevelopment project of the quarrying area.
Head trauma Tentative A 78-YEAR-OLD who went missing in Alicante last Friday night, May 15, was found on Sunday morning with head injuries and suffering from hypothermia. He was transferred to the General Hospital of Alicante where his condition is described as serious. The elderly man disappeared from his home in the La Vall d’Alcalà and was found by the Guardia Civil ‘conscious but in a serious condition.’ The search team included members of the GC del Vergel, Seprona del Vergel, GC de Gata de Gorgos, the GC Calpe Company, the Cynological Service and the Air Service of the GC Valencia, the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Team (EREIM) of the GC Onteniente, as well as firemen and a team of volunteers from the area. No further details have been released.

According to the employers’ association Hosbec, the opening of hotels in the province is ‘testimonial’ of the situation, with ‘only around 1 per cent of the total doing so.’ General Secretary, Nuria Montes, told Alicante Plaza, that the response has been minimal, with only four of the 366 hotels associated with Hosbec deciding to reopen, although there are several more non-associated establishments that have opened in Alicante City and Alcoy.

FRONTLINE FUNDRAISERS: Officers raised enough money to buy 1,500 kilos of basic necessities for those in need. WHILE protecting the local community on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic, the Guardia Civil in Altea has also been fundraising. And this week, officers donated more than 1,500 kilos of food and hygiene products bought with money collected, to the Alfaz del Pi Volunteers to distribute to the town’s most vulnerable. Alfaz mayor, Vicente Arques, together with councillor for Social Welfare, Marisa Cortés, thanked Borja Fernández, lieutenant of the Guardia Civil of Altea “for this extraordinary gesture.”
They praised “each and every one of the members of the Guardia Civil who, while fighting from the first moment in the front line against the coronavirus, and watching over our security, have raised funds and purchased food and hygiene products to distribute among the populations of l’Alfaz del Pi, Altea, La Nucia and Polop.” Ten delivered the aid to Alfaz Volunteers, in a van loaned by the company Centauro, “which we also have to thank for their collaboration,” said the mayor. He added: “This gesture will serve to alleviate the bad time being experienced by many families in our region.”

Health workers suffering PTSD BURNOUT: One in four hospital health workers reported they feel emotionally exhausted.
MORE than half of Spain’s health staff working in hospitals during the coronavirus crisis have symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and 80 per cent are suffering from anxiety, a new study reveals. Preliminary results from an investigation carried out by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Work Psychology and Safety Studies Laboratory show that 53 per cent of hospital health workers display symptoms compatible with PTSD and 79.5 per cent have symptoms of anxiety, of which 21.2 per cent could be severe cases. The study is based on the experience of 1,243 health workers at different hospitals. Nine out of 10 work in Madrid, Spain’s worst affected area by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Study authors Dr Lourdes Luceño Moreno and Jesus Martin Garcia concluded that depression is another issue. Just over 50 per cent of those taking part in the study have symptoms. Of these, 5.6 per cent could be severe. One in four reported they were emotionally exhausted. At the same time, more than 80 per cent said they like working in their profession and nearly one in four showed ‘high levels of resilience.’ The investigators concluded that psychological support for health workers is advisable, warning that if there were to be a second wave of the virus “we will find ourselves dealing with emotionally damaged professionals and with a health system without the capacity to respond.”

Temperature checks THE Spanish government has announced that all arrivals at Spanish airports are to have their temperatures checked on arrival. The measure, published in the official bulletin, will last until June 15 but could be extended beyond this date. In a move that severely affects the already beleaguered tourism industry; the new regulation coincides with the extension on the restrictions on non-essential travel for people coming into Spanish territory, which will be in place for another month. It also comes on the same day that the 14-day quarantine for international visitors came into effect in Spain. It is estimated that only a small number of coronavirus infections

FAKE EMAIL: Pretends to come from the DGT. A NEW hoax is circulating on the internet under the guise of Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) telling people via an email that they have been fined for a motoring offence. Hackers are now using the fake notification to con users to sharing their private details like bank accounts by clicking on a link. The DGT has advised that it does not use emails to notify drivers about fines nor does it use the kind of very blunt language that has been observed in the malicious mailing, which at first glance looks realistic. When the fake email is sent, the unsuspecting motorist sees the message with the subject ‘Pay your Fine.’ The actual email details where and when the offence was allegedly committed, and then he or she is directed to click on a link to get more information. The Internet Security Office says that clicking the link allows for the download of a malicious file that can infect a computer and be used in the future for hacking purposes.

The Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss flight offer to Spain will increase from 14 to 61 connections a week between June 1 and 14. Reservations are already being taken for the services connecting the two Balearic Islands and Valencia with the two northern European countries. Eurowings will be offering five weekly flights to Mallorca from Cologne, five from Dusseldor f, and four from Munich and two services a week between Dusseldorf and Ibiza. Swiss is flying four times a week from

Your ITV Explained Spain’s borders stay closed FOR many residents in Spain, lockdown has happened at an unfortunate time, driving licences and ITVs have expired and exceptions to these expiry dates have been made until now. Under Phase 1, if your ITV has expired you can make a booking at the closest centre. You must arrive with necessary protective gear such as face masks and gloves, as well as ensuring you have a pre-booked appointment. The government has given individuals a 30-day extension to their ITV if it expired during lockdown, as well as an additional 15-day grace peri-
od for each week that has passed in quarantine. Therefore, to work out how long before you must renew your ITV simply add 30 days to the expiry date, along with 15 additional days of every week in quarantine. For example, if your ITV expired in Week 1 of quarantine, from March 14 to 20 then you have 30 days to renew alongside an additional 15 days. If it expired in Week 2 of quarantine, from March 21 to 27, then you have 30 days to renew alongside an additional 30 days. Week 3 March 28 to April 3 would be 30 days to renew and an additional 45 days.

It will all depend on what you agree. If you do not reach an agreement and there are children who would be considered minors, the use of the habitual residence is normally granted to whoever has custody of the minors. In cases of shared custody, the Judge will decide who is granted the use of the home, taking into account the best interests of the minor. In the event that there are no minors, the Judge may, in some cases, grant the use of the family home to a spouse who is considered in a situation of special vulnerability, even if the other spouse is the owner of the property. If I divorce my partner in Spain, without having reached an agreement,
will I automatically be awarded joint custody of my children? No, joint custody is not automatically applied, even if it has been requested for in court. If there is no agreement between the parties, the Judge will decide, after analysing the specific circumstances of the case. If the spouses are expatriates living in Spain and one returns to their country of origin, in which courts should the petition for divorce or separation be filed? Regulation 2019/1111 of the European Union establishes that the courts where the divorce should be processed will be those of the state where there is a habitual residence. In other words, regardless of the nationality, if the last family
address was in Spain, in principle the divorce should be started in Spain. If the father or mother leaves home, is he/she obliged to pay support for the children? Yes, as it is an obligation of the parent who does not have custody and a right of the children. But the obligation only arises when child support has been agreed between the parents, or set by a Court, therefore, it does not arise directly and the amount involved must be declared and fixed by a judge or between the two parties. Can I request a modification of the divorce or separation agreement or court decision with regards to alimony to my former spouse, or financial support for my children if I have been affected by the crisis

THE number of Britons registered on Benidorm’s municipal Padron has increased by 4 per cent. The figure was quoted in Benidorm en Cifras 2020 (Benidorm in Numbers) a two-yearly compilation of the town’s statistics, which would normally have been presented at the end of March had the coronavirus not intervened. This year’s edition reveals that Spanish-born residents account for 65.3 per cent of Benidorm’s population compared with 66.6 since 2018. The number of Britons has risen by 4 per cent, which the town hall attributed to the campaigns reminding them of the need to be fully legal by the time that the UK has left the European Union at the end of this year.

BAR TERRACES: Open once more, but with strict rules. SOUND levels on Benidorm’s bar and restaurant terraces have been limited to background music at present. Bar, restaurant and pub associations Abreca, Cobreca and Ociobal reached an agreement to keep the volume down during the first phase of de-escalation from the coronavirus lockdown. “After several meetings with the three associations, we have established sound levels during terrace opening hours which end at 11pm,”
Lorenzo Martinez, Public Safety and Commerce councillor, announced. “As they do throughout the year, the Local Police will be controlling sound levels on the terraces to ensure that these remain within the agreed limits.” The Local Police vigilance is combined with that of Commerce inspectors who are visiting reopened establishments to check that they are complying with the health and safety measures applied by the Health authorities, the councillor said.
Lights, camera, and action! NOT only bars and shops came back to life in Benidorm during Phase One of the government’s de-escalation programme. They were joined by the Benidorm Film Office (BFO) with production companies requesting information and authorisation to shoot once more inside the town and, above all, the town’s beaches. This was the case with the full-length film Ama, which was interrupted on the afternoon of March 13 when the central government announced the State of Alarm. “Last January we commented that we were starting what promised to be the BFO’s best year ever, with numerous important national and international productions,” said Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez. “Some of these were interrupted by the State of Alarm and had to be temporarily suspended.” Nevertheless, he was confident that Benidorm would continue to attract production companies now that the decision to authorise filming rests with town halls, Perez declared.

Shutters went up with “uncertainty, fear and many preventive health measures to win the confidence of shoppers” but most of the town’s 1,842 commercial and services establishments remained closed because the Covid-19 pandemic meant there were no tourists to buy their products, AICO said. “There are two defined types of shops in Benidorm,” the association explained. “Those that depend 100 per cent on tourism and account for 60 per cent of stores and the remainder which cater to residents as well as tourists.” The majority of those that have opened are located in the town centre, the Old Town and residential neighbourhoods, AICO pointed out. “With beaches to remain closed and inter-province travel barred until Phase Three of de-escalation is introduced on June 8, opening a business without clients is not profitable.”
Better communications TWO roads connecting the Poniente beach and Avenida Alcalde Vicente Perez Devesa are now open to traffic. They are included in the TM Grupo’s 60,000-square metre development on land that has been zoned to build residential and hotel properties as well as the two roads linking the Poniente beach promenade with Via Parque.
One road runs parallel to the Las Lomas urbanisation while the other follows the site of the former Camino Rajarell. Both of the new roads are joined by a third. The two principal roads have bicycle lanes that are three metres wide, while the town hall has planted more than 300 trees, 40 of which were saved from other sites.

NORWAY DAY: A very different celebration this year for Alfaz.
ALFAZ ran up the Norwegian flag last Sunday at 8am from the town hall balcony. Alfaz’s mayor Vicente Arques and the town hall’s Other Nationalities councillor Martina Mertens and a member of Alfaz’s Norwegian community were present at the simple institutional act. They also read out an official message that was rebroadcast at 12 noon during the online celebration of Norway’s most important fiesta, Constitution Day.
Usually all Alfaz residents would be involved in a day of celebrations but the State of Alarm continues to bar crowded gatherings and the town’s Norwegian Community must spend most of the day indoors. There has been a strong Norwegian presence in Alfaz for 50 years, with more than 2,700 Norwegians registered on Alfaz’s Padron. The true number is round 8,000 and all residents are “perfectly integrated” municipal sources said.
Deep clean A LOCAL company has cleaned Alfaz’s 22 taxis, using ozone as a protective measure against the Covid-19 virus. Filling a car with the anti-viral, anti-bacterial gas can disinfect it in 10 minutes, reaching places that cannot be accessed by manual cleaning.

The association wants to encourage the community to express - in Spanish or English their experiences, yearnings, joys and hopes during these uncertain times that the Covid-19 pandemic has caused. Looking ahead to June 8 PLANS are being made to guarantee social distancing on Albir beach once this reopens. If Alfaz progresses to Phase Three of the central gover nment’s de-escalation programme, sunbathing and swimming should recommence on June 8, the town hall explained. Future strategies were discussed in a video call by the town hall’s Beaches department, the municipal biologist, a representative from the contracted life-saving service, and the beach-bed concessionary. The latter described plans to reorganise the layout of the sun-loungers as well as measures that included specific points to access the beach dependent on whether beachgoers plan to use the public space or hire a sunbed. These will have to be disinfected after each use and also under discussion was the method and products that would be used to carry this out.

But You’ll Have to Hurry, The WORKING FROM HOME DURING the recent coronavirus crisis many people found that they had to work from home. Initially this may have been quite a shock to the system, but many companies have found some surprising efficiencies in this approach. These efficiencies not only applied to the business in general, but also to the individual worker. Twitter has recently announced that post Covid-19, home working will continue indefinitely. But don’t think this option applies only to large companies, small companies with even two or three employees can benefit greatly by investing in permanent teleworking.
WELL RESEARCHED There have been many studies going back as far as 2000 about working from home and how it affects efficiency and individual welfare. It has become very clear that the benefits are substantial to both parties even before the coronavirus crisis. You might think that the phenomenon of working from home known as teleworking is a new one, but the research goes back nearly 20 years with studies being carried out all around the world. What the studies from 20 years ago can’t consider is modern software and hardware available today, but the principles are extremely well established. They have been refined over the years and with the introduction of better internet we are now in the era of making all the studies a more viable option. FROM AN EMPLOYER’S PERSPECTIVE The big advantage for employers is that overall, people are more productive. A recent report published in Inc.com showed that staff worked 1.6 days more every month. But there are also hidden advantages. You need less office space so lower rent, less electricity and people don’t get caught in traffic on the way to work. Of course, there are some downsides, the biggest being the cost of setting up. Staff need to be trained how to do it and there are costs in ensuring staff have good internet and the right equipment. There are also costs on the business side for ensuring security (VPNs, GDPR) and making sure backups are done centrally. You may even need to invest in a centralised Customer Relation Database (CRM) and a Virtual PBX phone system.
GOVERNMENT GRANTS AVAILABLE The Valencian Government has already implemented a scheme where you could get a grant of up to 40 per cent on your investment in setting up home working. As mentioned in the headline, you’ll need to make your initial submission by May 26, 2020.

working from home gives them a better work life balance. Often, they can integrate important family issues that occur during the day into their workday. Working from home gives them that flexibility. Additionally, many employees recognised that the commute to work no longer exists, this is perceived as work time, so they view this as included in their workday. An unexpected advantage is that employees report less distractions and are better able to focus and concentrate on the tasks at hand which means they can get through their work quicker. What they do miss however is the social interactions and this is why it’s important for employees to recognise the need to hold regular team meetings over the phone or by video conference and not just rely on messages and emails to communicate.

But if you can take a major per cent of those cars off the road pollution is reduced significantly and we have recently seen the wonderful pictures of major cities without the polluted atmosphere above them. Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Covid-19 crisis is causing a major distancing between Spanish society and its political representatives. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had intended to push Congress for a 30-day extension of the State of Alarm to ‘cover until the end of the de-escalation.’ However, Sánchez has not received the back up he had hoped for and has had to settle for another 15 days, which is the period for which the State of Alarm has been extended since it was decreed on March 14. Sánchez explained that, since it is a “completely different phase,” it will have modifications towards the “institutional de-escalation.” For this, he was negotiating with the Catalonia and Basque parties for their votes of agreement, but has been

Spain’s electorate seems to have little memory of this and the political parties know this therefore they could push for general elections and once all the important positions have been negotiated just another reboot.

EVEN though there are some indus tries that have benefited from the Covid19 pandemic such as suppli ers of plastic sheets for safety screens, even they are suffering. According to the British Plastics Federation, some firms aren’t likely to be able to supply the necessary acrylics until the end of July and as more shops and offices open, so the demand just keeps increasing. As organisations like Uber and mini cab firms are now trialling the addition of screens in their cars, the supply situation can only get worse.

Spanish car industry facing problems IT would appear that one of the first major losses of industrial pro duction in Spain will come in the vehicle production industry. Japanese newspaper Nikkei sug gests that when it reveals its latest results on May 28, Nissan will an nounce the closure of its lossmak ing factory in Barcelona and the transfer of production to France. Last year the Spanish arm pro duced some 55,000 commercial ve hicles and small lorries but has been working to only a small per centage of capacity for some time. Concurrent to this, the French

LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they block use of pool? In our community we have several different forms of action against the nonpayers of community fees, such as not allowing them to vote at the AGM. My questions are: 1. Is it legal to disable the electronic key to the pool and garden area for nonpaying owners? 2. Yes, it can be made ‘legal’ by amending the original statutes of the community to include the prohibition of pool access. 3. No, the Property Registry will not reject the amendment. All of the above depends on court decisions and not laws. This is why I put ‘legal’ between quotation marks. One court has ruled that pool access can be prohibited if it is written in the statutes. And, yes, you can amend your statutes by a unanimous vote. This is highly unlikely.

Another large loan THE Spanish construction compa ny OHL has entered into an agree ment with a number of banks to borrow €140 million in order to protect its liquidity. As is becoming more common with large loans, a condition was that it should be substantially guaranteed by the Official Credit Institute (ICO) which is an arm of Spain’s government and it has ac cepted a 70 per cent risk. The loan is due to be repaid the end of October 2021 by which time the company expects busi ness to return to normal.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NUMBERS seem to be at the top of the priority list among the politicians and media these days. Numbers of deaths here, numbers of cases there, percentages of victims from this area, how the UK numbers compare with other countries. The whole sorry debacle is beginning to resemble some macabre international lottery competition. As I write this, I have a half an eye on SKY news and, lo and behold, the announcer is giving out more numbers, namely the number of deaths in care homes. Well of course these particular sums truly are shocking. We are all terribly saddened by the number of elderly patients succumbing to this awful disease. But why are we so surprised at the high death toll among the most vulnerable in our society? After all is this not the whole point? It is a proven fact that those who live in care homes are far less likely to survive this

awful virus than others who are younger and more healthy. I have found myself in a quite a few care homes over the years and have been surprised (or not!) that the homes depict-
ed on the media always seem to show highly efficient modern units, all computerised, with pristine environments and facilities, run by highly efficient and articulate staff. ‘The only reason for
the high rate of deaths in these establishments,’ spout many of those desperately striving to gain political points, ‘is the government’s failure to provide enough PPE equipment.’ But it’s not the only reason is it? Having experienced the heartbreak of two beloved parents, who finally had to be moved to care homes, I can assure you that they are not all as wonderful as the media would like us to believe. There are thousands of these lucrative private care homes scattered throughout the country, and quite a number that I have experienced are a positive disgrace. While vainly searching for somewhere to place my dear Dad and later my Mum, I was appalled by the conditions in a whole host of these places. Many of them stank of urine. I saw others that were grubby and badly run by completely incompetent staff. Not a few
were run by immigrants, mainly from Pakistan, who, after taking advantage of government schemes to buy large houses, had brought all their relatives over to live in half of the house, while the ‘residents’ lived in the other half and were often tended by some of these relatives who had no qualifications whatsoever. The speed that this virus could have run rampant through these poorly run establishments doesn’t bear thinking about PPE equipment or not. No I truly am fed up with the way the media tries to twist the news to suit their political leanings or merely to pick up ratings by the promotion of sensationalism. Ah well. Go safe everyone. FREEDOM FIGHTER DEAR Euro Weekly News, Please don’t take away my one hour in the evening for exercise! I am in remission from lung cancer, and very vulnerable, and the 7-8pm hour to take a walk safely and get some fresh air is a saviour for me, after nearly eight weeks of not leaving the house at all, I do enjoy my evening walk, knowing there will not be 100s of people out walking and putting my health at risk! At 8pm when I make my way home there are literally 100s of people and lunatics racing past on bikes, and not adhering to social distancing rules, and it would be very unsafe for me to walk amongst all these people. I may be over 70, but one hour in the evening to walk is not too much to ask, surely? I am over 70, but just as important as every other member of society! And I wait all day for 7pm to come, so I can go out for some fresh air. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE LITTLE BIT OF FREEDOM YOU HAVE GIVEN ME!!!!!! Normal people have a choice of eight hours in which to take their exercise, children have a choice of seven hours, and over 70’s have a choice of just
OUR VIEW Soft touch DESPITE becoming the worst-hit country in Europe, Boris Johnson seems to be enjoying the peak of his popularity curve. Italy and the UK are the two European nations most badly affected by Covid-19. Italians, who constitute a sizeable community in the UK, are heartbroken that the British people are suffering the same fate as their home country. Some have taken to social media to chastise the ‘reluctance’ and ‘naivety’ of the PM when it came to containing the pandemic, despite having watched the Covid-19 hell unfold in Italy. When a lockdown was eventually enforced in the UK, many Italians couldn’t understand why people in Britain were allowed to jog, go for a walk or simply leave home without showing papers to the police. When Britain recently became the country with the worst coronavirus death toll in Europe, many Italians grieved in shock. To others, it was only to be expected given the UK’s relaxed lockdown. Italians are now leaving the UK in droves to go back to their home country, according to the Italian embassy in London. The initially soft Covid-19 approach of the UK government generated a great deal of fear among Italians, and they decided it made more sense to leave. Just like the Brits, Italians are enormously proud of their healthcare system, which, not surprisingly, was mentioned by Johnson as an example of an excellent healthcare system unable to cope with the waves of victims from the pandemic. Of course, every country has made its own mistakes against this invisible enemy. Italy made huge ones. Yet many in Italy are still wondering why the UK didn’t act immediately against the virus after the immense suffering in southern Europe. This has now generated a sort of general scepticism and distrust toward the British authorities among Italian citizens.

Pleasure in power Dear Euro Weekly News, I hope I am wrong. It is my feeling that Bill Gates knows that this pandemic was just a trial run to see who obeys the lockdown and who didn’t. How long people stayed in their homes before they rebelled. What ages were involved and what types of people? How effective was their control of the media and use of AI to remove videos that were against the status quo? The next pandemic will probably be very soon as they will not want the countries affected to recover economically. It will probably be a mutated version of CV and they will seed it in areas where it will spread the fastest and kill the most people. This time what the virus does not kill, food shortages will. The fact that Bill Gates is already warning us as he did the last time that another pandemic is on the cards it will happen because he will make sure it does. This psychopath takes pleasure in his power to create fear and panic on a greater level than Stalin, Mao and Hitler especially as he will be responsible for its release. But this time the vaccine will magically appear and will be ready with some form of microchip or identity system ready to inject the world population for the coming One World Government. It’s very hard for the tourism sector here to see another country, whose virus profile is very similar to Spain, take a lead. I hope there may be a rethink to assist the economy here progressing. I can understand the reluctance to accept overseas visitors, but the world is currently grinding to a halt. Surely there are measures that can be taken to introduce overseas visitors which that can keep the potential health impact to a minimum. We’ve made great progress so far and it would be good to think we could show the world the way and make it a success.

For three hours people around the globe hung on to every word that came out of this buffoon’s mouth when he was interviewed on London Real, a ‘digital freedom’ channel set up through a crowdfunding campaign to allow conspiracy theorists to air all manner of outlandish ideas. ‘Son of God’ Icke, who believes the Royal Family are ‘reptilian-human hybrids’ and that Jews bankrolled Hitler, insists the Covid-19 pandemic is a cover for a murderous global cabal bent on establishing a fascist World Order by using 5G transmissions to engineer

WHEN you’re feeling down in the dumps, chances are you’ll respond one of two ways. Yo u might hide away at home not wanting to speak to anyone. Or you may reach out to friends, unloading your worries on to them. Neither approach is wrong! Whichever way you go, it may be difficult to understand those who act differently than you do when they’re feeling fragile. Here’s why you might be inclined to reach out or hideaway. Reaching Out When a thousand worries weigh on your brain, sometimes the only way to relieve pressure is by letting off steam. Per haps you invite your bestie over for a takeaway, a sad movie, and a long cry. Or maybe you rant, unloading all of your worries on your mum. You might even type a long email to a trusted friend, laying bare all your worries. Talking through your fragile feelings with a trusted friend or loved one works much like talk therapy, discussing your anxieties helps you sort out your true feelings. But letting off too much steam isn’t healthy, either. If your venting comes out as rage, or you’re thinking obsessively over an idea or choice, your health may be at risk so make sure your venting remains constructive. How to help someone who reaches out If your friend is going through a difficult time, offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. Ignore the
temptation to offer advice - now isn’t the time for multitasking with some Candy Crush or Facebook. But if you suspect their troubles run deeper, encourage them to seek professional help, speak to a doctor. Hiding away Hiding out under the covers can seem like the only option when you’re feeling sad. Besides, every time you step out into society, it feels like taking a risk. Will you cry in public? Will you say yet another stupid thing that worsens your bad mood? In certain situations, wallowing is acceptable - give yourself time to heal after something bad happens. There’s no shame in an extended break from the big scary world. The more you fold in on yourself, the more difficult it becomes to reach out for help from a friend or a therapist. How to help someone that just wants to hide away If you’re worried about a f r i e n d who has dropped off the face of the p l a n e t , tread carefully. Not everyone is receptive to a suggestion that might be dealing with a condition like depression. Waiting for them to reach out may be the best strategy. But if you haven’t heard from them in a while, consider sending a message. Let them know you care and want to talk to them. Don’t push the issue, but leave an opening for further communication. To be honest I’m just fed up with it MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man WELL we nearly got out and about except we live in Malaga Province so I’m grumpy about that. To be honest I’m so fed up with it all I’m just going to let them get on with it. I’m sure someone understands it all. The only thing I would say to all governments is stop making this worldwide disaster so partisan. Stop trying to score points. If something needs to be passed to save lives don’t just block it because it was suggested by the ‘other side.’ America is by far the worst and I think Spain has a few problems. Maybe there should be cross party committees to stop this happening. Just an idea. During this time of being at home I’ve been making a lot of calls via Facetime, WhatsApp, Skype and Zoom which mostly is fine but it does wind me up if the person I’m talking to is doing something else like walking around the room at the same time making me feel like
I’m on a rocking boat. Or they place the phone in such a way that I spend half the time staring at their forehead or up their nose. If you don’t know how to turn your camera on don’t make a video call at all - voice will do fine thanks. As far as Zoom is concerned it’s also a good idea to learn how to use it before you disrupt the rest of the group by pressing all the buttons on the bottom of the screen. We use Zoom for a group of us that all have the same Orthostatic Tremor problem. We are all around 70ish so you can imagine the chaos of trying to work out how not to talk over each other. But we are getting there and the fact is this is going to be the way to have meetings for the foreseeable future. Is anyone else having problems getting to see a doctor? I have had to renew my prescriptions by phone and cannot even get to talk to my diabetic doctor. My neumologist would only talk to me by phone. How can she tell how I am without a physical check-up? The daft thing was she left a prescription in reception so I had to drive to pick it up. The car park was virtually empty but they still charged me to park there!

MEMORY BOX GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY WHEN I moved to Marbella last April, I travelled light. Extremely, light. I have been known to require a separate car for my luggage, on many occasions. However, the move to Spain was one I was unsure of, so my full wardrobe didn’t arrive with me. The idea to make Spain my base, was met with uncertainty over whether it would suit. Meanwhile, life remained busy with social engagements, so I used the stores of Puerto Banus to fill in the gaps. After long deliberations over Marbella being the right place, my wardrobe and other deliveries arrived in December, but had yet to be opened and arranged. As it rained, I opened the third box, of 11, and out fell old photographs, and press cuttings. I had to make a gin and tonic. Sitting on my hall floor, surrounded by chaos, I was transported back in time. My mind racing, as I rummaged deeper in the treasure chest. In fairness, the majority of the photos remain a mystery, as my old life was filled with memory loss, rather than memories. Most were taken at parties, or fashion shows. Funnily, some were of me on the catwalk. I remember one night being asked to walk in a show, alongside my dear friend, the late, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. I arrived pretty drunk, following a long lunch, to find that Tara had cheekily missed her flight. Told I would have to walk out solo, I froze. A room packed with guests and media, I felt self-aware. I felt wasted. Somehow, the team dressed me and sent me out onto a runway that seemed to go on forever. I stood, dressed in Gucci, legs operating like jelly, and stared out into the darkness. All I could see was the long road ahead. To the sound of Chic, I Want Your love, I strutted, well, more likely stumbled along. Arriving at the end of the catwalk, I posed for photographers for longer than required. I think I was just relieved to have made it, without falling over. Turning, I bumped straight into the next model, knocking the poor girl off her Fendi heels. Everyone laughed, I died a little, immediately sobered up and we kept going. In life when we mess up, we have to keep going. What’s the alternative?
CAT WALK: Strutting my stuff. And that’s what we have to do right now - keep going. Writing this, on day 63 of lockdown, I feel confused. With still so much ‘normality’ to return, when and how, will it happen? Who knows, we simply must wake each day, and continue. While many things feel surreal, still so many people are hoping for a well-earned holiday. Rather than live in limbo, perhaps it’s time to consider spending our chill time closer to home. Possibly, because I live in one of Europe’s busiest tourist destinations, I receive many messages from people, asking if Marbella will reopen and be ready for their planned July visit. Will the airports be operating? Listen, I have absolutely no idea. All I will say, is if this is something that’s seriously troubling you, perhaps consider a new plan. In the same way that I may not be able to travel to Italy, France or Ireland, you may not be able to come here. So, I am looking at the option to spend the summer between Marbella and Ibiza. My family spent a lot of time on Isla Blanca in the late 70’s, and this year I imagine it will be a similar vibe. A chilled, relaxed island, rather than a hedonistic party paradise. For me, the updates regarding air travel and border openings feel a little confusing and unsure, so why waste time living in hope? Look at options that are achievable and book them. As I began to open box number four, I realised, that real memories, even when most are a blur, are the best thing we have. This is a good time to sit, think, laugh, and at the end of the day, be grateful. As we’ll be free to make new memories soon.

Here the demand for lockdown restrictions to be eased has focused on Britain’s twin obsessions of recycling and gardening: the opening of council tips and garden centres. Washington officials were “furious” to learn UK police had put an international wanted notice out for Anne Sacoolas, the American woman charged over 19-year-old Harry’s death last year, the Mail on Sunday reports.

last year. Anne Sacoolas, 42, the wife of a US intelligence official based at RAF Croughton, claimed diplomatic immunity after the crash and was able to return to her home country. She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in December, but an extradition request submitted by the Home Office was rejected by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in January, a decision the State Department has since described as “final.”

the EU compromised. According to the Mail on Sunday, if no compromise is reached at the next meeting between the two sides at the end of May, then the indications were that Britain would simply walk away and leave without a deal.

ITALIANS angry over the lack of help from the EU during the Coronavirus Crisis are demanding a vote to leave the block. Italy was the first country in Europe to be placed on strict lockdown as it struggled to cope with the spread of Covid19. Its European neighbours largely looked on and did nothing to help relieve the burden. Months later as the lockdown is slowly lifted and Italians begin to tentatively venture out, there is growing concern over the economic impact of the crisis. The discontent among Italians has given way to rising support for the idea of an independent Italy outside of the EU. A survey of 1,000 Italians carried out in April by Tecne showed 42 per cent would like to see their country break ties with Brussels. This marked a jump from 26 per cent in November 2018.
