CONFUSED.COM? READY TO OPEN?: Store floors marked for social distancing. DESPITE Spain’s slow but steady progress in deescalating out of the coronavirus health crisis, there is still a lot of confusion felt by residents in confinement about what rules apply, where they apply and to whom they apply. Thankfully measures are beginning to relax however, finding out which measures apply in which stage has been a headache for many. Firstly, the government said it would only de-escalate by provinces, and this has been the case in Andalucia, however, in other areas of the nation provinces have been allowed to deescalate by sanitary districts.
Why has the entirety of Malaga, which only has one sanitary district that does not comply with Phase 1 criteria, been forced to remain in Phase 0? Instead, territories in Valencia and Alicante with a higher incidence of the virus have been allowed to de-escalate separately. Not only this, but the constant backtracking on rules and regulations has also proven confusing, to say the least. Initially, the new driving regulations were only applicable to residents in Phase 1, now they apply to Phase 0 as well. At one point, bars and restaurants were only allowed to open their terraces to accommodate 30 per cent of usual customers, after facing backlash they changed this to 50 per cent. Similarly, going to a residence in the same province was only allowed in Phase 2, after facing controversy this has been amended to Phase 1. It begs the question, how are these regulations being created and enforced? How much backlash must a regulation face before being adapted? What is the final say? These are important questions that business owners and customers must know the answers to if
they plan on contributing to the economy and re-activating the notion of ‘new normality.’

Clearing Up Confusion
EXERCISE: Is permitted in bothphases but at regulated times. Can I go to church or my place of worship? No if you are in Phase 0 this will be
closed. Yes, if you are in Phase 1. Can I travel in the car with my family?
Individuals in both Phase 0 and Phase 1 are now allowed to travel with members of their household in the same private vehicle, without using masks and occupying all seats available. However, if you are travelling with a non-household member you must wear a face mask and respect the maximum distance between passengers. Can I go out to do exercise? Yes, in both phases exercise is allowed, however, you must abide to your designated time slot. Children under the age of 14 (accompanied by an adult): From 12.00pm to 7.00pm Individuals over the age of 70: From 10.00am to 12.00pm and from 7.00pm to 8.00pm Individuals over 14 but under 70: From 6.00am to 10.00am and from 8.00pm to 11.00pm Can I take my children out? Yes, in both phases, either to accompany you to do activities permissible under your phase or during the designated exercise hours. When taking your child out for exercise this must be done by a single parent and only a maximum of three children can go out under the supervision of one parent.

TO make things a little simpler during this complicated time, we have developed an easy to read guide about what you can and can’t do during your deescalation phase: Can I travel to go and see my family or friends? No, if you are in Phase 0 you are not allowed to visit friends or family at their homes. Yes, if you are in Phase 1, you are permitted to hold small social gatherings of up to 10 people, but this must be within the same province. You are not allowed to travel outside of your province to visit anyone. Can I go to the bar/restaurant? No, if you are in Phase 0, bars and restaurants will remain closed to the public, however, you can go and pick up food to take away and eat at home. Yes, if you are in Phase 1, then bars and restaurants with open terraces will be open but at a limited capacity and correct hygiene measures should be abided to. Can I go to the hairdressers? Yes, no matter what phase you are in, businesses which take prior appointments will be open, all you need to do is book in advance.

MALAGA Province, which includes the whole of the Costa del Sol, was denied permission to move to Phase 1 of de-escalation by Spain’s PM Pedro Sanchez and the Ministry of Health this past weekend. Andalucia’s request for Malaga to be allowed to move to Phase 1 by health district with additional restrictions, which would have allowed some municipalities to move to Phase 1, was also denied. Although Malaga was very close to meeting the conditions set by the Ministry of Health in terms of the number of available beds and the rate of new Covid-19 cases, they simply didn’t fulfil all the set criteria and health markers, “to cope with a new wave of cases,” according to the Ministry of Health. One of the health markers includes having two available ICU (intensive care unit) hospital beds per 100,000 inhabitants, as well as between 37 and 40 available regular hospital beds per 100,000 inhabitants.
THERE was an appeal at Iceland in Puerto Banus where Lily Van Tongeren on behalf of the Triple A animal charity Marbella asked for donations. Triple A were in need of cleaning products, disinfectant and paper towels in order to help keep the accommo-

Social saviours THE ‘Recogida Solidaria de Alimentos’ campaign in Torremolinos has had a great success, in which the total sum of non-perishable food has exceeded 20 tons of weight. The organisation, carried out by the Cruz Roja Torremolinos, la Hermandad de Marineros Nuestra Señora del Carmen de la Carihuela, Falsa Realidad, Protección Civil, Servicios Operativos and Servicios Sociales of Torremolinos Town Hall, has been WITH the easing of the lockdown, Age Care is even busier as the hospitals and clinics are beginning to readmit and re-arrange appointments that were previously changed. The volunteer drivers are making sure the clients are able to attend their appointments, whether it is in Benalmadena, CARE or the Costa del Sol. At the same time, Age Care is providing hot meals to the homeless and

deployed by numerous supermarkets in the municipality, finding a huge example of solidarity from the residents of Torremolinos. The collection of a large quantity of food and basic goods which residents had left at different collection points was carried out on Friday May 8 and Saturday, May 9. All items will be used for the most vulnerable families in the municipality, hit by the social, health and economic crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pedro Sánchez will meet with the committee that directs the de-escalation plan tomorrow, Friday May 15. Minister of Health, Salvador Illa explained that he expects reports from each community for that day. Although the local and regional authorities consider that this week of delay may have been detrimental to Malaga, what the rest of Andalucia is showing is that the economic reincorporation of commerce and restoration is gradual.
Good News THE Health Delegation of the Andalucian Government has stated that putting newspapers in stands both inside a premise or even on the street is perfectly acceptable. The Health Delegation highlighted a statement from the World Health Organisation, which says: “the risk of transmission of the Covid-19 by printed paper is ‘infinitely insignificant,’ so picking up a newspaper to read or leaf through it by one or more people, whether at home or in a public establishment, is safe and is not a cause of contagion.”

OFFICERS from the Local Police in Marbella have been patrolling parts of the Paseo Maritimo with Civil Protection volunteers covering up signs showing that bicycles are no longer allowed to travel on them as part of a new council initiative. There is now an alterna-
tive route for cyclists of almost three kilometres, which will run through Avenida Ricardo Soriano to Calle Camilo José Cela to avoid crowds. In addition, special pedestrian lanes will be marked out in an effort to maintain some form of social distancing especially at busy times such as the weekends.
Coast footbridge divides two towns IN order to comply with regulations concerning movement during lockdown and following advice from Local Police, the towns of Manilva and Casares have now closed the footbridge on the coastal walk which unites the two municipalities. Although the bridge has been left open during the State of Alarm, as more people are allowed to be out exercising it was considered appropriate to enforce the rules until such time as the two towns enter a phase which allows visits.
Sad death A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl died suddenly last Thursday on a street in the Malaga neighbourhood of El Palo. The events took place on May 7 on Calle Almagro y Cárdenas, behind the football field of El Palo. The emergency services received several calls about the incident. The first to arrive at the scene were Local Police officers, who asked for radio support and demanded a resuscitator. The El Palo health centre, which is located a few metres from where the events occurred, despatched a doctor and a nurse to assist the girl
on the spot, working in the patrol car. Medical workers at the scene tried to resuscitate the girl for more than half an hour. Finally, it was decided to evacuate her by ambulance to the Maternal Hospital, but on the way to the health centre, she passed away. Apparently, the little girl, was Julen Roselló’s cousin, the twoyear-old Spanish boy who fell 70m into a narrow shaft near Totalán in Málaga, on January 13, 2019. The shaft, illegally excavated, was 110m deep and had a diameter of 25cm.

Dip in the sea WATCHERS from balconies in Fuengirola have become accustomed to police beach patrols on specialised quad bikes riding across the golden sands. They have been witnessed travelling at 40mph at times charging across the long beach and sometimes even more as the police surge up and down endorsing the regulations, but on Wednesday May 6 one officer got a bit carried away as he ditched his THE National Police closed down a bar in Malaga City after they surprised more than a dozen people inside who were blatantly just standing at the bar listening to music and drinking. The raid took place on May 11 when a call to the National Police alerted that there was a hotel establishment open to the public in the area of the Poligono Santa Teresa. A patrol travelled to the

With the arrival of more cops to the scene and the grua, the attraction brought great laughter as crowds surrounded the area to watch, but police checked their watches and started issuing fines to the watchers for being out too early. Help for the vulnerable MIJAS Food Bank has confirmed that it distributes food to around 300 vulnerable families each week, in collaboration with the Red Cross. The recently raised funds of around €264,128 will continue to help feed vulnerable families that have been financially affected by the pandemic, confir med Mijas Town Hall mayor, Josele González. “We want to thank the volunteers who continue to work with the food bank during this complicated time, and attend to the needs of hundreds of families that have been left without any income as a result of the crisis,” stated González. He also confir med that the number of people needing food supplies has multiplied in just a matter of a few weeks. However, thanks to various contributions from business donations to individual gestures, the Mijas Food Bank has managed to raise over €260,000 to be able to meet

A rapid response
IT was only on Saturday May 9 that a resident in the Xarblanca Urbanisation of Marbella posted a complaint on social media about what used to be a pleasant pond in the middle of the Xarblanca Park. According to this person, even the ducks won’t go into the pond as it is so polluted with at least one dead bird, a great deal of dirt and because it is now stagnant,
it is a breeding ground for mosquitos. Children are now returning to the park which is easily accessible and some of the wooden fencing around the pond is missing. Impressively, someone on Marbella Council must have read this complaint and within 48 hours a worker had arrived and started to treat the area in order to dispose of the mosquitos.

Volunteers close ovens AFTER allowing volunteers to cook food in their homes for those in need in the Estepona/Marbella area, councils have now decided that for health reasons this should not be allowed and unless the cooks stop, they could be given significant fines. At least families were receiving hot food for up to seven weeks and charities are now only able to deliver basic groceries which is better than nothing. Collective Calling is now appealing for donations of eggs, flour, milk, rice, tinned fish, chick peas, lentils, pasta, butter, tomato frito, cooking oil and potatoes from which they can make family grocery packs. Malaga’s Beaches
THE mayor of Benalmadena, Victor Navas, has asked the Junta de Andalucia to open all beaches in Malaga at the same time, which under the deescalation plan are expected to open on May 25. Navas has stressed the importance of having a “uniform and harmonised” reopening of beaches on the
coast so that “there is no competition between municipalities but rather a clear date for preparing beaches.” Navas also asked that the Andalucian Health Service be in charge of the analysis and sanitary control of beaches as “the municipalities do not have the capacity to do this.”

CONTROVERSIALLY, former mayor of Marbella and local PSOE leader José Bernal has given his support to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his government in deciding not to allow Malaga Province to enter Phase 1 of the lockdown easing. His opinion is that it is important to ensure that the health of all residents in the province is protected and that the decision was one made on the basis of sensible technical detail.
Bernal challenged current Marbella mayor Ángeles Muñoz to be less of a defeatist and to promote the city as an even safer destination once the lockdown is eventually eased. He also took the opportunity to remind the Marbella Council that the Costa del Sol is not a Partido Popular possession and that towns such as Benalmadena and Mijas which have PSOE councils are coping better and offering greater help to their residents.

IN the small print of the Official State Bulletin order approved this Saturday, May 9, the government has included a prohibition regarding sales at physical shops, which will affect the more relaxed opening of shops in Phase 1. However, this measure will only affect physical stores as it aims to avoid crowds and an over-saturation of people. “This restriction will not affect sales or sale promotions made through the websites” states the order. Neither employers nor large operators understand the meaning of the measure, which they describe as ‘incongruous.’ This measure was established to give an opportunity to smaller businesses

THE National Police have arrested a gang of safe-crackers suspected of stealing a gold bar and high-end jewellery during a lockdown crime spree. According to the police, the seven ‘highly professional’ suspects

specialised in overriding security systems using ‘frequency inhibitors and oxyfuel torches’ to open safes. They have been charged with seven burglaries in Zamora and Madrid. The gang, all from
Madrid targeted a jewellers, a DIY store and five companies before and during the State of Alarm lockdown. After sabotaging alarms they managed to steal €155,000, a gold bar and jewellery.
ARRIVING IN SPAIN: People must spend two weeks in isolation. TRAVEL agencies, tour operators, and transport companies are now obligated to inform potential holidaymakers and travellers about the new quarantine measures when selling tickets destined towards any Spanish territories. “People coming from abroad must quarantine for 14 days following their arrival,” stated the Official State Bulletin on Tuesday, May 12. This order established by the Ministry of
Health, which comes into force at 12.00am on May 15, aims to enforce a quarantine for people arriving in Spain from abroad, at least until the State of Alarm lasts. It establishes that any person who travels to Spain from abroad, regardless if they are Spanish or foreign, must be quarantined for two weeks either ‘at home or accommodation, and must limit their movements’ to certain activities such as ‘ac-
quisition of food, pharmaceuticals, access to health centres or due to force majeure.’ The transborder workers, transporters and crews are exempt from this standard, ‘provided they have not been in contact with people diagnosed with Covid19.’ Airlines must also provide a Passenger Location Card for passengers to fill in upon arrival in case they must be located once they have entered Spain.

SPAIN’S notorious Franco era henchman and torturer, nicknamed ‘Billy the Kid,’ has died of Covid-19 at the age of 73 on May 7 in Madrid. Antonio González Pacheco was given the nickname of the cowboy outlaw after his habit of spinning a gun on his finger. Regarded as one of the worst torturers in the General Franco dictatorship, he was never charged thanks to the
Amnesty Law of 1977, which granted immunity to crimes committed from the Spanish Civil War through to the mid-70’s. González served as a police officer in Madrid under the Franco regime and in 1975, after Franco’s death, he joined the police’s anti-terrorism unit, where he led a campaign against the Basque terrorist group ETA. In 2013, an Argentinian court issued an international arrest warrant on 13 counts of torture as
part of an investigation into Franco-era crimes that included disappearances, forced labour, murders, stolen children, and unlawful detention. That bid failed a year later; the High Court in Madrid rejected an extradition request, saying that any crimes that had been committed had passed. Boost to domestic tourism WITH the prospect of a holiday season of closed borders, restricting overseas travel and threats of quarantines, Spain’s travel agencies have stressed the importance of catering to local tourism. The Corporate Association of Specialised Travel Agencies (Acave), the main employer in the sector in Spain with more than 500 associated agencies, has urged the government to boost the promotion of domestic tourism “in order to save
some of the summer season and the period after that until the end of the year.” They argue priority must be given to local tourist packages, organised through its agencies to adhere to strict government health regulations. The fight for European aid will be important, Acave told El Periodico, as well as the amount to be distributed. The issue of opening of borders is being discussed this week at European level.
But in the meantime, the president of the Spain’s Business Confederation of Hospitality (CEHE), José Luis Yzuel, said the tourism sector is facing a real “reconversion in its purest form.” He says while the Spanish government has not gone as far as Germany, where VAT has been lowered for establishments “because the sector in Spain is so large that it is doubtful that something like this will be possible here,” other measures have been put in place.

Travel Ban Extension SPAIN and its European Union fellow countries are set to keep a nonessential travel ban going for potential visitors trying to get in from outside the region. The European Commission has asked for formal approval to extend the limitation for another month, which would take it through to June 15. The proposal has to be officially rubberstamped by the leaders of each EU member country. Despite progress in the fight against Covid19 within individual countries, the EU Commission says that it wants to make sure that travel will not spread the virus into its area. The Commission added that the priority was reopening up borders between its members ahead of the rest of the world. Spain is a member of the so-called Schengen area, which allows free movement across the borders of other European countries like France.

Airport charges LOW COST carrier Ryanair has demanded that Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, scraps airport charges in Spain. The Irish company has also said that they “want to resume flights as soon as possible,” once travel restrictions have been lifted. Ryanair is annoyed that they have to pay parking fees for their stranded planes across the Spanish airport network operated by state-owner Aena. Ryanair’s argument is that their planes cannot go anywhere else, and though Aena has given them a sixmonth interest free delay on paying the fees, the company says the charge
doesn’t make any sense. Ryanair’s Eddie Wilson said: “It’s unjustified as our aircraft are immobilised and parked at airports due to the Spanish government’s travel restrictions.” Wilson added that he fully supported the Madrid government’s measures to fight the coronavirus, but said that Aenaoperated airports “should not be allowed to make any benefit out of the crisis at the expense of airlines that are in a difficult situation due to travel restrictions.” He also pointed out that most EU airports had waived fees, and added that if Aena didn’t then it “would be up to Pedro Sanchez and the government to do so.”

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil in Barcelona have arrested a Moroccan citizen for his association to the terrorist group Daesh. The investigation was coordinated with the help of Moroccan DGST and the FBI. The detainee had been showing clear signs of radicalisation and affinity with the terrorist group Daesh for four years now. His radicalisation was discreetly carried out both in a physical and virtual sense and he had never been identified as a critical actor. However, during the State

Brink of collapse SPAIN’s new car sales plummeted this year to an all-time low of 4,163 units in April, following a 69.3 per cent tumble in the previous month, as the country was under lockdown and dealerships were closed during the month as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak. After a few phone calls to car dealerships, it became apparent that people are simply not buying new models, preferring instead to hold on to their old ones. The problem is that it has a massive knock-on effect across the whole of the Spanish economy and not just for the manufacturers. It affects the distributors, the drivers, the workforces, and the hundreds of smaller but essential workshops dotted around Spain that produce bespoke parts. In the back they discovered two recently caught Bluefin Tuna with a combined weight of 199 kilos but when questioned, the driver of the vehicle was
unable to produce any acceptable documentation showing that the fish had been caught legally. Bluefin Tuna are valuable commodities but are protected by annual quotas both in Spain and off the coast of Gibraltar as they regularly cross the Straits from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. In this case the fish were confiscated and donated to a Malagabased charity.
Water Safety
SAFETY: Measures in place. THE Spanish National Research Council has conducted a report regarding the safety of bathing in the sea or pools during the coronavirus crisis and ruled that transmitting the virus in this environment is ‘highly unlikely.’ It warns that social distancing should be respected even when enjoying recreational activities in the water. Risk in swimming pools and spas will be less likely due to disinfecting agents which are used to avoid contamination by the influx of users and ‘should be sufficient to deactivate the virus.’ The most worrying factor is the presence of the coronavirus in the water of rivers, lakes and pools of untreated fresh water, in which case the coronavirus has greater chances of surviving and precautionary measures must be taken to avoid crowds.

According to the ratings agency, the company faces the reality of the maturity of bonds worth €800 million in the latter part of next year and it fears that the bet ting company could end up in default as it already has liquidity problems. Codere has called in a specialist firm of advisers to try to help it renegotiate its
debts, but even if its betting shops open within the next few weeks, if there are no significant sporting events for customers to bet on, then cash flow will be more of a trickle. Lack of liquidity coupled with the fact that lenders may well be more interested in backing larger enterprises with greater assets means Codere which employs some 12,000 staff could be in trouble.

Bitcoin devaluation EVERY four years the value of crypto currency bitcoin is halved in a deliberate effort to slow down the number of coins ‘mined.’ At the onset of the coronavirus Covid19 pandemic the value of a single bitcoin dropped to $4,200 (€3,876) but now a few days be fore the devaluation, it has jumped back to just below $10,000 (€9,232). Lenders return £100 million IN 2010, the newly formed Metro Bank Plc became the f i r s t n e w U K h i g h s t re e t bank to launch in 150 years and all went well at first. Initially a privately owned bank, it launched on the stock exchange and by 2018, share prices rose to almost £40 (€46) but the revelation of a major accounting error saw shares plummet and the resignation of its two founders. Not a rescue SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has warned that loans of €540 billion to be made by the Eurogroup to member states are not a bailout but credit lines to help each
government’s economy. The money is coming from two sources with the European ‘bailout’ fund (ESM) inputting €240 billion, the European Investment Bank is
funding €200 billion. A further €100 billion will be given by the European Commission in order to support measures such as paid furloughs known in Spain as ERTE.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I CANNOT personally join in the condemnation and leftie gloating over the British government’s handling of the PPE dilemma. With the growing pressure and need for more and more supplies it is plainly obvious that ministers have been searching far and wide for ways of obtaining these lifesaving pieces of equipment. After all, who would have thought that Turkey of all places would have some means of producing vast amounts of these vital medical items? A number of other countries in the world, seeing a chance of a quick profit, have turned their hand to manufacturing these supplies, is it no wonder that much of it is inferior or not fit for purpose? The most despicable country of all of course is China. With its vast manufacturing ‘robot’ manufacturing capabilities the Chinese are pouring all their efforts into churning out as much

MEDICAL SUPPLIES: Many countries are now manufacturing these. PPE and breathing equipment as possible. Millions of tons are being manufactured from their factories, many of which are springing up virtually overnight. They are hawking their products around the world and, according to reports, ‘customers’ are being given 15 minutes to make decisions on millions of
pounds worth of goods or else it gets offered to someone else! This is a disgraceful state of affairs. It’s almost a take it or leave it scenario. And what about the moral issues? The country responsible for the whole debacle is making billions from the victims of their actions. That’s like demolishing
someone’s house without their permission and charging the owners for rebuilding. What they should be doing is donating all their products free of charge. At least this would go some way to making amends for this scourge of death and misery they have released on the world. Well don’t hold your breath for that scenario; they’re too busy making sure they’re all fir mly on board before the world’s economy ‘gangplank’ plunges into the water. Five weeks ago I wrote that the ethnic areas of the UK cities weren’t taking a blind bit of notice of the gover nment’s advice for social distancing or staying indoors. Mosques were still open and some Imams were telling their followers the virus was ‘not their problem’ and was ‘Allah’s revenge on the Infidel.’ I said at the time that when they began to drop like flies, it
would be a whole different story. Well it’s happened hasn’t it? It is now being reported that those from ethnic communities have up to four times the chance of dying from the virus than their white counterparts. They actually are trying to insinuate that this disease has some kind of racist connotations! What a load of old codswallop. The only reason there are more people dying from the ethnic communities is because the majority consider themselves totally alien from the rules and regulations that govern the country they live in. End of. I do not of course include those from these communities working in the front lines. These are the givers. Unfortunately they are a very small percentage of their compatriots. In addition, most of the calls we have been receiving are from clients wonderi n g

We d o u n d e r stand why people are ringing to make sure as it’s a worrying time and people are more anxious. “Our advice, as always, is if someone loses a friend or loved one, ring us first. As long as you have a plan with us, we will take care of everything and if not, we can give you advice and point you in the right direction.” She added: “These are unprecedented times; it can be difficult to reach out to people who are grieving because there are different stages to grief. It’s just important to let them know they are not alone.” Emma has seen a lot of change in attitudes towards death over the years, and even more so now, in the midst of the pandemic. “Death is on people’s minds now, it’s not as taboo a subject as it once was, and people are more open to talking about and planning ahead for it. “It’s important to put an End of Life plan in place, not just because of the pandemic, but also because of Brexit. “We have found that with Brexit and now the pandemic, people are understandably worried as many longstanding companies have gone into administration. I can assure everyone that we have an independent Trust Fund in place to safeguard your plan purchase against this situation occurring.”

PERSONAL IMPACT HEALTH INSURANCE Specialist, Victoria, is also hands on throughout the crisis, advising and reassuring clients and others who need assistance. While she and the rest of the team have maintained a presence throughout the State of Alarm, she says how it has affected her personally. “My life has changed a lot due to lockdown,” said Victoria. “I have a five-year-old son, He’s at home with my husband. “It’s been hard not being able to go out with my boy. It was his birthday last month and he obviously wanted to see his friends. “He has been fantastic and very understanding of this overwhelming situation. His
school did an amazing job and explained everything before it closed, and we reinforced the message at home too. In truth it’s hard for him to understand in full because he can’t physically see it.” But Emma says she feels lucky and privileged. “The confinement side of lockdown has not really had much of an impact on me. I am fortunate to be able to adapt to a situation and changes in circumstance. “We are all now in a new world and we are all doing our jobs differently and to the best of our ability. “My team and I are concentrating on helping other people who are in a much less fortunate position.”

UNLIKE here in Spain where lockdown is gradually being lifted, more than a quarter of Brits don’t want any restrictions eased in the UK according to a recent poll. Why? Just as hard to understand is what is regarded elsewhere as ‘essential services.’ In France, it’s chocolate and cheese shops. In the USA, it’s gun shops (sales surging to record levels) and marihuana dispensaries. As for the UK, before lockdown, pasta, hand gel and toilet rolls were the must-have items. Now it’s hair dye, gym/tech/DIY equipment and booze. Have you found a new hobby or skill during lock-
down? Exercise, DIY or hair dyeing? You may not be able to swing a cat, but you can still shape up at home promise TV fitness trainers. All you need to emerge from self-isolation fighting fit, full of fitness tips and exercises to do in a confined space. And we’re constantly prodded everywhere to complete that DIY project, learn Italian, improve our cookery skills via online Cordon Bleu courses! With all the cooking tips and recipes, it sometimes feels a bit like we’re all competing in a national episode of ‘Ready Steady Cook.’ As for me, apart from helping an elderly neighbour, I’m currently busy working (remotely) with my good friend, the actor Rayner Bourton, on converting the balance of my novels into audiobooks. Rayner created the role of ‘Rocky’ in the original

She has long per for med and supported charitable work and during these extraordinary circumstances she has both inspired and supported her community via The Food Fairies project, rallying individuals and businesses to donate, volunteer and contribute to some of the most vulnerable in her area. Martin Hamilton, Costa Blanca South “He has done more for his community and surrounding areas throughout the lockdown. Apart from keeping both shops open throughout the lockdown by taking orders for customers to collect. He has entertained us all every morning with his comedy acts taking off well-known singers and dressing up to look like them. I’m 74 yrs old and live alone but he is the highlight of my day which has given me the strength to get through each day. He has also

Josefina Navarro, Granada “Fina is a refugee here in Spain but has always looked out for everyone she meets. She has shepherded many of us expats through immigration hurdles, house-hunting and other aspects of daily life, always with an enormous smile on her tiny self. The moment we were allowed outdoor activity, she came to my home with her shopping trolley to pick up some groceries. She took them off to a nearby family in need while swaddled up in her makeshift protective gear. She is a ray of light for all around her.” - Steve Corlew
“Fina was a volunteer at the Red Cross before the lockdown, but she has doubled down on her work since. While others were afraid to leave their homes, Fina risked her own health to work. “A friend of ours had his foot amputated last December. He has been shut in alone during this time, Fina not only gets medicines, groceries, and other services for him, but she stands outside his apartment to check up on him. “Even if she is not directly assist-

Trish Kelly, Kelly’s Bar, Monte Duquesa “During lockdown, Trish has been a godsend to her elderly customers (who she helps all throughout the year, as well as now). Trish is known for her kind heart, during the past year she has visited patients in hospital and taken food to her elderly customers. Now she has ‘upped her game.’ “She cooks 50 to 100 meals roughly a week for St George’s charity collective who have been feeding people who can’t support themselves. She has arranged for food parcels, bought masks, visors and gloves for community members.
Alison Bramwell, Mojacar “She has not only done so much for the community of Mojacar before the Covid-19 Crisis with her ceaseless charity work of helping the MACS Charity, but for all of us who have been stuck indoors for the past eight weeks, now going into our ninth with her Fitness and Exercise Workouts being posted via Facebook and email. She has truly kept us on our toes with her daily workouts of Zumba, Dance, Pilates and Stretch routines making it fun for All of
us yet a vital part for us to be able to stay fit and healthy whilst in lockdown. Not only has she been doing this but has also offered her services to any of us who have found ourselves in need of help during this trying time.” - Jan Crossfield

Saloua Sfar, Mallorca “I would like to nominate Saloua Sfar who owns a small restaurant, Ma Maison, in Palma De Mallorca. She cooks and has just two staff. “Visiting the local soup kitchen, she was dismayed to learn that they didn’t have enough food and were turning people away even hungry babies. “Most are not homeless, but desperately in need, because of the pandemic. She has raised the money and is providing baby food and free meals to many, many people. “Every Christmas she raises money and enlists the help of other chefs to cook for over 500 children and provide them with gifts. “The woman has a heart of gold and deserves some sort of acknowledgement. I hope you choose her.” - Barbara Jago
“I would like to nominate our golf Society president Mr Neil Kinrade. “Neil has set up a community in Playa Flamenca to help families around the area. He has helped at least 10 families whether it’s paying their bills, rent or sending food parcels. He also helps with medical expenses for people that can’t afford it.
“He donated funds to the staff of our bar as he knew they were waiting over seven weeks for payment from the government. We have a team of five and he has asked for no recognition or payment in return. “He is a genuine guy and a caring soul, even if he didn’t win I think it would be nice to recognise people like Neil for all their hard work.” - Laura Delaney
Jorge González, Cantoria “All this, whilst being a mother to six children (all grown up, but still local and a grandmother to Leo who is one in a couple of weeks. “Her stepmother was cremated and she couldn’t attend the funeral in the UK and her father has had Coronavirus. CORONA CHAMELEONS GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY THE universe sometimes returns an ex, just to see if you’re still stupid. That’s what happened to me last week, when I was contacted, via WhatsApp chat. There wasn’t so much of a chat, instead, I was asked if I wanted to have sex again. I didn’t bother to reply, I deleted the message and laughed. Apart from the fact that said ex is in Monaco, and I’m in Marbella, the very idea that I wanted to share as much as an espresso, let alone a bed, made my stomach turn. An hour or so later, I was watching a movie and could hear my phone beeping from another room. Eventually, I went to investigate more similar messages, all from the same sender, filed in my phone as ‘Don’t Answer!’ I realised, I’m happy to be single. However, it threw up the question of what I’ll do next. If lockdown is to continue, one way or another, for the foreseeable future, perhaps I should take my friend Raf’s advice, and snoop on the dating apps. It’s a long time since I ventured into the strange world of dating apps, and last time, I recall it was a minefield. So many odd people - some desperate, some angry, some scarily crazy. I’m sure I fit into one of those categories, lord knows which one, but I couldn’t take it seriously. I checked, and so many people, all ready to chat. However, some, like the aforementioned ex, went straight to sex. I know people use apps for hookups, and that’s all good. But, basic, boring people, demanding XXX photos, without offering as much a clear face photo. Come on! Don’t get me wrong, I’m confident, but after nine weeks in lockdown, eating pasta, it would require Mario Testino to take my photos, if I wasn’t going to scare people. Then there are those who insist their photos are recent, even though they are clearly taken at bars, restaurants, or clubs, which have been closed for years. Surely, a recent photo is necessary, if we’re going to move past ‘hello.’ What next, we chat for months before meeting, and when we do, they’ve aged 20 years, gained 15 kilos, and somehow lost their hair? These, are what I call the Corona
STRANGE FEELING: To finally be free. Chameleons - a new breed of online daters, or online fakers, who create a whole new world, and image for themselves, as they know they have little, or no chance of meeting anytime soon. After just one hour of this bizarre world, I decided it wasn’t for me, deleted the apps and opened more wine. Like most, I had really missed my morning run. Admittedly, some days, the only way to move my ass and do it, was to reward myself with breakfast at The Marbella Club afterwards. When the government announced that exercise was permitted, I was like a giddy child at Christmas. So much so, I went to bed early, in order to be ready to go at 6am. My house is directly on the beach, and having spent the last two months staring out to sea, to finally be free was a strange feeling. I ran as fast as I could along the water’s edge, listening to Dimitri from Paris. Breathing the fresh morning air and realising, that the real world is waiting for us. All of nature, having been left alone, now in excessive bloom. Strangers, smiling as we pass. Perhaps, Covid lockdown has been something of a reset button from the universe. Having been locked away, suddenly I notice so many beautiful people running by. Marbella, I salute you. Who needs online, when we have real life? Remember, the universe who sends the ex back into your life, is the same one, who sends you many great opportunities each day. Now is the time to open our eyes, and most certainly our hearts.

Lessons from the past FRANKLY SPEAKING

FOR those of you that know me, you’ll know that I’m very passionate about certain subjects. Injustice being one of them. Racism and bigotry are in there too. I think this could be connected to my condition - Asperger’s Syndrome, that I’ve mentioned in previous articles. The other adult Autistics I have come across seem to share similar feelings regarding fairness and equality. We are thought of as having no empathy too! I strongly disagree with that - we have plenty, too much sometimes. We’re even thought of as aloof. My husband jokingly calls me ‘The Ice Queen’ because he says I’m cold! Well, at least I stay fresh in the summer! We do have emotions, but don’t always show them how you’d expect. There’s many misconceptions about us, I don’t think Rain Man helped either - that damn film! When I tell people I have Asperger’s Syndrome, some presume I’m a mathematical genius. Quite frankly, maths has never even been my strong point! I also think some of my opinions could come from my family history. My Jewish great grandfather escaped Lithuania before the Holocaust. Had he waited a few years; he probably wouldn’t have survived. As a family we’ve never held racist or bigoted views. I don’t think it’s a coincidence,
given what we were told about our heritage. Something that’s bothering me now is the derogatory language used about Chinese people. I appreciate the government in China have made mistakes regarding Covid19. But I’m seeing some people call for a total boycott of Chinese trade. This even includes the Chinese businesses here in Spain! It’s so unreasonable some Chinese immigrants were here before us. I fail to see how you can blame people for mistakes a government have made in a country they no longer belong to! This must be a worrying time for them. They must be aware of the hostility. It bothers me to think of people feeling frightened and unwelcome. I think of how terrified the Jewish people in Europe must have been, even before they were persecuted. There were warning signs and that’s why my great grandfather left to settle in the UK. He escaped the same fear, resentment, suspicion and paranoia. This is their home and they are no more responsible for the virus than we are. I for one will continue to use the Chinese shops - isn’t there always something we need in them?! Chinese food is delicious too, I won’t be giving that up in a hurry! Once normal life resumes, I think we should do our best to support everyone in our community, including the Chinese. We’re all in this together. I’m proud to belong to a coast that’s a melting pot of so many races, cultures and interesting people. Long may it continue!

Happy Lockdown Birthdays
MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING AT 9.04 I received a message from Hannah Lopez (Murray), friend and presenter at Talk Radio. It read ‘Happy birthday - I can’t post on your wall for some reason? Have you changed your settings…?’ There have been many a time I also tried to post on a friend’s page and couldn’t so on those occasions I also sent a private message to the person in question to wish them a happy day. However it never occurred to me that per haps they didn’t know people couldn’t openly congratulate them and I didn’t know to tell them or that it would even make a difference. Thanks to Hannah I now know better. Enthused by the message I decided to see what the settings were; I didn’t think I had changed anything and wasn’t really sure where to look, but I thought I’d give it a go. It actually took me quite a while to work out; I think I finally found it was

somewhere in profile settings and it had something to do with letting others post on our timeline, not a big deal once you know how. As soon as I changed the setting the messages started and they kept on coming! It really did help make the day extra special and to think that I’ve
been missing out on all this excitement since 2012 when I opened the account! It’s a silly thing perhaps but knowing that people take the time to wish us well is a very special thing and I want to savour and appreciate the moment.
I am still floating on a cloud of happiness . I am so blessed to have received so much love, also via private messages, by WhatsApp, SMS, emails, Instagram and I even had a few actual phone calls! I remember years back my dear friend Ana Marie told me how when she lost her brother at an early age she had realised how lucky we are to be a year older each year, this is not something to complain about or dread; quite the contrary. With each year that passes I remember her words and give thanks for simply being alive, an opportunity to live another day, another year. May is always a big month for us: my grandmother’s birthday was on May 1, exactly a week before my mum, her daughter, on May 8. My birthday is on May 6 and my daughter exactly one week after that, yesterday in fact, May 13. So happy, happy, happy birthday to my baby girl and a very merry ‘unbirthday’ to everyone else ☺ Life is precious and certainly worth celebrating, every day.

UP until a month ago, we had become completely accustomed to full, constantly topped up supermarket shelves. We could get whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted it. But did we ever actually stop to consider what it took to produce food or where the constant flow came from? Food had become a commodity we no longer had to fight for, it was readily available. However, when the Coronavirus pandemic slapped the world in the face it put certain things, like the need for food, into perspective. Faced with stripped supermarket shelves, closed bakeries, coffee shops and restaurants, reality bit. Some of those in isolation were robbed of their packaged sandwich breakfast, ready meals from supermarkets and easy alternatives from the kebab shop and had to try something new, cooking from scratch, getting inventive and fending for themselves. In doing so nine out of 10 adults report that they are more aware of how much food they are wasting, and over a third of consumers are throwing out less than before the crisis struck. We are learning to value food as well as learning to value our own abilities to handle change and survive. However, we cannot allow ourselves to become complacent. When we return to normality we must carry over this new respect for food and ultimately our new respect for survival.

DEAR Euro Weekly News, The hours given to different age groups of the community is just not working. On the first day that children with a parent were allowed out it seemed like every child was out enjoying themselves, a week on, they have six hours to exercise, where have they all gone, our promenade is now deserted between the hours of 12 and 6, however b e t w e e n 6 a m a n d 1 0 a m t h e s a m e a re a s a re crowded, not only with the designated age group but also some children and very many over 70’s who obviously can’t wait until 10 am to take their exercise. T he t o wn c e nt re w a s a s b u s y a s b e f o re t h e lockdown at midday today, social distancing has d i s a p p e a re d . S h o r t m e m o r i e s ! ! Think twice Dear Euro Weekly, I booked a flight with Ryanair from Alicante to London Gatwick in March. I also booked a hotel and airport parking. I took out Ryanair insurance. The week before I was due to travel I started coughing and felt unwell. On the advice of the Spanish medical contact service, I was advised not to travel, I didn’t. I h a v e emailed them on another two occasions since. Again, no reply. Ryanair is a money-making organisation who think nothing for their customers. The flights were £124.39. HAIR often plays a critical role in forming a woman’s identity, so it should come as no surprise that female hair loss can have a major effect on self-esteem, mood and confidence. Some people experience hair loss at a pace that’s more rapid t h a n u s u a l , h o w e v e r, hair loss due to hormones, stress, iron and diet-related causes is generally reversible. Menopause Before and during menopause, hormonal changes affect hair growth, particularly due to a decrease in estrogen and progesterone. Female pattern hair loss is more common during that period, and could even relate to hair loss from androgens (male hormones) depending on the woman’s genet-
ics. There are suggestions that anti-androgen hormones can help, as well as iron supplements. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can be beneficial in hair loss too, by slowing it down or stopping it completely. Thyroid Irregularities The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating our metabolism, and it’s usually the first thing a doctor will look at if you have issues with weight changes or hair loss. Thyroid hormones are released in the body, regulating everything from breathing to temperature, body weight and hair growth. Nutrition and thyroid disease can affect the release of those hormones, and low thyroid hormones, also
known as hypothyroidism, can cause reversible alopecia and eyebrow thinning. With proper medication to support the thyroid, the hair loss can be completely reversed. Anaemia Iron deficiency is another of the most common causes of hair loss in women. Low iron stores can force hair into a rest phase, resulting in increased shedding and reduced density. Iron deficiency is quite common if you’ve experienced sudden weight loss or on a vegan diet. Iron is used both for hair production and red blood cell production. The body prioritises the red blood cell production, so if it has a limited amount of iron intake, the first thing to be affected is the hair.
WE hear this phrase being used quite a lot with recent events - the ‘New Normal’.’ So what is it like having bipolar and adjusting to your ‘new normal’?! Having bipolar is a game changer, but you still have the power to decide where to set your goalposts for a fulfilling future. It took a long time for me to come to terms with and accepting the fact that I have a mental illness . But lately, I have been looking beyond my bipolar. With the skills and support to manage my symptoms, I am ready to make the most of my life and my abilities. There’s an end to saying ‘I survived the day.’ Now I’m more focused on what I can do to thrive. I’m not necessarily letting go of my struggle with bipolar disorder, but I am learning to thrive inside of it... I feel more optimistic than I have in a long time. In other words, I am embracing this ‘new normal.’ Basic milestones like keeping a routine, keeping your home organised and staying in contact with friends and family can begin to feel out of reach, being physically fit and healthy. A bipolar diagnosis doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to your hopes and dreams with patience, commitment, and a plan for setting realistic goals you can achieve anything you set out to do. It might take a little longer, and you might need some motivation to get there. Letting go It’s important to take the time, to give yourself the time to be sad before mov-
ing on to make adjustments, before thinking about how you can have a really happy life. When I stopped comparing myself to others , my ‘new normal’ became less painful. I let go of the past and the ‘what ifs’ ‘what if I had done it differently.’ You can’t change the past, but you can change how your ‘today’ is going to be. Keep it real Lower your expectations too much and you’ll stay stuck. Aim too high and failure is almost certain. You need a just-right plan where you want to go with what you’re capable of right now. When a goal starts to take over someone’s time day or night, takes priority over having good relationships, or costs too much money or energy, that’s when you should worry. Sometimes you need to tone things down a little bit, keep it real. A new path Start by being more gentle with, and accepting of, yourself… to a certain extent, we all live wanting other people’s respect, but that craving can be more intense if you’re feeling insecure. A good way to set new goals is to look back at the ones you’ve already met, a lot of times they’ll be things that, six months before, you didn’t think you could do. Just because I have this illness doesn’t mean I have to feel sorry for myself and I don’t want other people to feel sorry for me, either. THE board of the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola, has decided to cancel the remainder of its 2019/2020 season. Even though it is likely that at some stage during the mid-point of the year, it would be allowed to reopen, it would be with a reduced capacity. The board said “our greater concern is the health of our staff, volunteers, performers and audiences and we believe that the virus is not yet controlled
to a degree where we could ensure a safe environment in which to operate.” The theatre seasons run from September to early June so it is hoped that the 2020/2021 season can go ahead as planned with Evita the blockbuster musical cancelled from this season being slotted in. So much depends upon government policy as there is always a need for casting and rehearsal well before the actual shows take place.
THE Harry Potter franchise took the world by storm and made author J K Rowling a multi-millionaire and she has now invited various actors to read chapters from the iconic books to entertain children and parents during the lockdown. The first chapter of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is being read by Harry Potter himself, actor Daniel Radcliffe online at the ‘Harry Potter at Home’ website. Other narrators, include Eddie Redmayne, from the spin-off films Fantastic Beasts, which

Free Lloyd Webber Musicals FOR those that were disappointed that they couldn’t see Evita live at the Salon Varietes Theatre in Fuengirola, there are chances to enjoy top musicals free of charge and this Friday, May 15, it’s the turn of Cats. Andrew Lloyd Webber has created a YouTube channel The Show Must Go On and every Friday at 8pm (Spanish time), one of his musicals is being presented free of charge for 48 hours. Forget the recent film, this version was recorded at London’s Adelphi Theatre in 1998 and stars Elaine Paige, Ken Page, Sir John Mills and Michael Gruber. There are plenty of other musicals and plays available from different sites in the UK and USA so use your time to find a favourite.
I didn’t make the list... at all! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I watch a lot of news in light of what’s going on in the world and have started making comparisons. The daily update in the UK by the government seems to be dignified, professional, well organised and to the point. The experts have their say then the press ask a few questions and the panel answer them the best they can. I’m not saying that some questions asked are not swerved but the experts all seem to be allowed to give what appears to be factual information. I watch Merkel talk about the German situation - she seems very much on top of the crisis and talks with authority and even Macron looks like he’s doing a good job. Then I turn over and watch the scariest one of them all - the daily Trump show. OMG! This buffoon stands there talking absolute garbage rambling on about the most ridiculous things like using disinfectant as a medicine. He tried to defend his remarks by saying they
were sarcastic. I watched the experts squirming as he said it then he tried to deny it. He contradicts himself, his experts, the WHO and the Governors of many states. I then watch what else is being said in the USA by the Governors of the different states but what happens is I actually don’t take in what they are saying, not because I’m not listening, but because I’m totally distracted by the wonderful ASL interpreters that stand at one side. Whenever I see someone doing sign language I remember a YouTube clip with someone signing at a rap concert and the audience seemed to be taking more notice of her than the artist. Is it just me? MY father has always loved to barbecue and as a boy we had many BBQs with friends and neighbours but dad was always in charge. In fact, most of my fun memories as a boy are attached somehow to a BBQ! Dad still cooks on the barbie and he is 84. But 8 + 4 = 12 and he has the mental age of a 12-year-old when it comes to living life! My mother passed away almost seven years ago and left a huge hole. However, he insists on enjoying life (and why not!) especially with his 50-something girlfriend Sandra, who he says Mum would approve of! I am not so sure about that dad, but yes, your BBQs are legendary! Some years ago, when I was doing the TV cookery shows, I was approached by a company that manufactures chef’s unifor ms. They
asked me to help design a new range for them to make chef’s gear a bit more fun especially for the event companies that had loads of garden parties. I wanted to make them more stylish, lighter with lots of pockets, easy to take off, easy to wash and quick to dry. Most chef’s jackets were uncomfortably heavy cotton in those days and took ages to dry. It was to be called the Steven Saunders Gour met Chef’s Collection. But in the background someone special had a hand in it. My close friend David Emanuel who is a famous wedding dress designer, had introduced me to a designer colleague of his called Lee McQueen, you might know him as Alexander McQueen. I met him with David in Quo Vadis in London, one of Marco Pierre White’s restaurants. They were drinking upstairs in the bar with the legendary Bob Geldorf who looked a bit worse for wear! I got Lee’s number after chatting enthusiastically about my new chef’s clothes range and then I asked my PR lady Vicky, to give him a
call. We met in London to discuss ideas. It was 1994, I had just started the Ready Steady Cook show and Lee was working in London (that was before Givenchy poached him). Lee wasn’t that interested to be fair. He said that he wanted to help and could see the market for work clothes evolving but he had loads on preparing for a fashion show and had recently been approached by the Spice Girls wanting a new look, but had turned them down. But what he did do was sketch what he thought the chef’s jackets should look like. It was a basic but beautiful pencil sketch of a shirt with vegetables, carrots with tops, artichokes and asparagus featured on them. The sketch of an artichoke coming from someone who couldn’t cook was remarkable! Afterwards Lee and I went to a local bar somewhere near Savile Row where he was excited to tell me about his Jack the Ripper designer collection for the forthcoming fashion show. I left thinking great guy, friggin’ weird designs, but hey that’s fashion, I guess!

So, I had a sketch of a fun looking chef’s jacket in my pocket and some ideas (I wish I had kept the sketch!). I remember saying to the company’s manufacturing designer team, we must have carrots, bright orange carrots with their greens. They thought I was bonkers! But they were manufactured as requested and then heavily marketed and advertised throughout various catering journals.
A few weeks later, I called the company and asked about the sales of the range. Not much they said about 25 sets that’s all. I ordered my dad a jacket and had David Saunders Executive Chef inscribed onto it. He was over the moon when he got it and said he would wear it at every BBQ! That was about 26 years ago, he still wears it and loves it, for sure it has survived the test of time. But one thing I never told him was who was behind it. Not because I was hiding it, but because Lee wasn’t that well known back then and dad wouldn’t have known him. Then recently I watched a video of my dad that he sent me and he was wearing the jacket, I thought…crikey I should tell him the story! I am really pleased that you still wear the jacket dad and here is the story behind it and a great recipe for fantastic spare ribs! The key to this recipe is that the ribs are part cooked in stock to soften and flavour them, but finished on the BBQ for that fantastic crusty and smoky finish. It’s a really easy recipe to follow and everyone will love them!

Steven’s easy but perfect Sticky BBQ Ribs Ingredients (serves two) 1 full rack back pork ribs (approx 1.5 kilos) 1 heaped tablespoon of chicken bouillon granules (or 2 chicken stock cubes) Approx 1.5 litres of chicken stock 3 cloves of garlic peeled and crushed For the Sticky Glaze 1 tbsp tomato ketchup 2 tbsp barbecue sauce 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce To make the glaze simply mix all the ingredients well together
Method 1. Pre heat oven to 160ºC in fan oven 2. Pre-heat the BBQ 3. Pour the chicken stock into a deep saucepan enough to cover the whole rack of ribs folded to fit the pan. Add the garlic. 4. Bring to the boil and keep on a rapid simmer for at least one hour 5. They should feel tender but not be falling apart. 6. Cut the full rack into halves between the bones. 7. Now put the two halves
of pork ribs onto your BBQ and colour both sides generously tur ning every minute or so. Get a nice crusty colour to them which gives them a great smoky flavour. 8. When the ribs are brown, carefully lift off the BBQ and put them onto a roasting tray. 9. Coat with the sticky glaze neatly all over with a spoon and roast for 30 minutes in the pre-heated oven. 10. Serve with a salad or some new season asparagus and garlic crushed new potatoes.

BARRY DUKE IT’S 2025. I still have a goatee and moustache, but they are no longer immaculately groomed. What’s the point as I am no longer allowed to show my face in public? For this I have to thank Professor Amanda Berk, of England’s Health Protection Agency. She invented a ‘smart’ full face and body covering to avoid repeats of pandemics such as Covid19. This was immediately adopted by disease control centres across the globe. Clerics representing religions that castigate women for dressing ‘immodestly’ were jubilant after the Berkquarantina - or ‘berka’ for short - was introduced, but they started kicking up holy hell after they realised the garment was mandatory for ALL sexes. Human rights activists were also dismayed by the garment, for not only does it have an inbuilt tracking device but also

When a member of the Human Disease Tracking Force arrived to hand over my ‘berka’ and closely watched me wriggle into it, I quipped ‘does my bum look big in this?’ He snapped: ‘Sir, if I had a euro for every time I’ve heard that, I’d be a very rich man.’
