Who will need your money the most? The community has grown together during this crisis and shown that we can care for and respect each other. Now it’s your turn to give back to your community. Administration offices to open BOTH the Government and Public Service Unions have agreed that administration offices shall be open to the public from May 25 which should coincide with Phase II of the de-escalation process, with a limited capacity and only with a prebooked appointment; however it will remain open until 9.00pm. This notion has appeared in the electronic agreement between the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Carolina Darias, and the unions, CSIF, UGT, CCOO and GIG. This has formed part of the framework of the transitional plan towards a new normality as they have incorporated organisational measures

Expats pitching in to keep food banks stocked THE coronavirus crisis and the lockdown have hit many families in Almeria very hard indeed. The enforced closure of businesses and the paralysis of everyday life has left many people out of work and a lot of households in a very vulnerable position. The province’s food banks have become more vital than ever in what are unprecedented and very uncertain times, and expat communities are pitching in to make sure families struggling to get by do not want for basic supplies. The Dames in Spain Mojacar is one association which has responded to the call for help from the Mojacar Red Cross for food and donations to help less fortunate locals. The Dames’ committee unanimously agreed to make a donation of €300. The Almanzora Group of Friends is another which has done its bit. The group donated €100 from the money raised from its 2019 charity quiz to each of the two Albox Cari-

To the rescue IT was Guardia Civil to the rescue when a boat being used by professional divers working on the Dalias desalination plant ended up drifting dangerously close to rocks in front of the Guardia Viejas castle in El Ejido in strong winds. The Guardia’s provincial maritime service ‘Rio Almanzora’ patrol boat headed out as soon as the call came in about the boats’ predicament, the team telling the four crew members to put on their life jackets and to try and stay calm until they got to them. After a highly complicated manoeuvre in rough seas and strong gusts of wind, the Guardia patrol managed to hook a line to the stricken craft and tow it back to Almeria port.

The Vera and District Lions has meanwhile expanded its food support programme under the current crisis situation to support local people in need. The club regularly supports the Vera and Turre Food Banks with financial and food dona-

t i o n s throughout the year. As part of this the Lions have the support of Iceland store in Vera, with a donation trolley by the checkout to accept donations of dried and tinned foods to benefit the Vera Food Bank. The

trolley features the Lions logo and is highly visible. The organisation urges shoppers to do their bit to help out by buying extra items in store and dropping them in the trolley on their way out. The Vera Lions has also increased its financial support to Vera Food Bank and donated €500 each to Mojacar Red Cross and to Arboleas and Zurgena councils to support

their food supply programmes. On top of this they have approached a further seven municipalities in the district to find out whether their food support programmes need financial support from the club. The club has also now secured a food donation basket by the checkout at Thomas’ Supermarket in Mojacar Playa to accept food donations on behalf of the Mojacar Red Cross. April 26 was the date Vera Lions had planned to run its annual Party in the Park fundraising day, now postponed until later in the year. In recognition of this it has now launched a gofundme page to raise funds to support the extended food support programme. Seafront prom reopens Health worker Covid-19 testing underway MOJACAR’S seafront promenade reopened on Saturday for residents living within a kilometre’s distance to take walks and do exercise under the lockdown de-escalation. The local council’s announcement followed the Spanish government’s decision earlier in the week to allow citizens outside for a

daily hour of fresh air within specific time slots dictated by their age to stroll or to do physical activities like running or cycling. The local authority also announced that the locality’s beaches remain closed for the moment, but will reopen depending on the evolution of the coronavirus health crisis.

RAPID Covid-19 testing of health workers got underway in Almeria last week. The Junta de Andalucia’s Health and Families Territorial Delegation started on the first 2,000 tests for public medical sector staff in the province’s three different health districts. Spirit-lifting entertainment A BRITISH expat songbird pensioner has been keeping up her neighbours’ spirits during the long weeks of confinement with weekly concerts from the rooftop of her Los Gallardos home. Anne Anstey, 79, has been singing on stage all her life, so it seemed quite natural to her to put on a free show to bring some cheer at these dark and uncertain coronavirus times. Every Saturday at 2pm she has been setting up her PA system and belting out tunes for a good hour for the entire Huerta Nueva residential community. “We’re all suffering from stress at the moment, and people needed lifting up, especially as a lot of the residents here are el-

Originally from Bristol, Anne performed with bands back in the UK, and here in Almeria she regularly sings at fundraising events for the Turre-based Stepping Stones carers’ support group under her ‘entertainment name’ Anne Rogers, a tribute to her husband, who she describes as her “backbone.” The coronavirus State of Alarm lockdown has put the fundraising appearances on hold for the moment, but Anne plans to carry on with the rooftop per formances, at least until social activities return to some kind of normality.

Would-be thief jailed for assault A WOULD-BE thief is behind bars for assaulting three Guardia Civil officers when they arrested him for attempted robbery in Berja. The JUCIL Justice for the Guardia Civil association reported that the incident last month left officers from the Berja and Laujar de Andarax stations with injuries, prompting a Berja court to order that the defendant identified as OR, who had also been breaking lockdown restrictions, be held in prison without bail. The defendant appealed the court’s decision, but an Almeria provincial court overruled the appeal and ratified the decision to hold

DEMAND: The JUCIL Justice for the Guardia Civil association wants to see better protection measures for officers. OR in jail, Spanish press reports. The judges concluded that while the case related to a crime which is

not normally categorised by the law as serious, given the defendant is a foreigner there was a significant flight risk, according to Spanish press. JUCIL said it regretted the assault on the officers, and reported that in the last four months its legal services have acted on nine cases in the province involving the arrest of the suspected aggressors and assaults on 17 officers. The association said that in most of the cases officers had been injured and called for the adoption of sufficient measures to ensure they were protected in the line of duty.

Beach service extension request CUEVAS DE ALMANANZORA Council has asked the Junta de Andalucia for an extension to the authorisation for offering holiday period services on the municipality’s beaches for the period 2016-2019 to include this year due to the exceptional coronavirus crisis situation. The local authority said the aim is to extend the concessions to the concerns awarded the right to offer the services in the authorisation, The administration explained this would be a measure to “minimise the social impact” of the crisis and affecting the whole country, and help to “facilitate the recovery of economic activity as soon as the health situation improves.” The council said the measure would also help “prevent a negative impact on jobs and the viability of companies stemming from the suspension of public contracts.”

THE Almeria provincial government has unveiled plans to create a permanent tribute to coronavirus victims. A grand monument in Senes will serve as “a place of perpetual homage and memory,” the administration said. Diputacion President Javier A Garcia explained the idea is to stage a competition for design ideas with the assistance of the Almeria College of Architects, once the necessary procedures have been put in place for preparing the site and it is known how many hectares will be available. “Our best recognition in this health crisis is for the victims of this terrible pandemic who we will never forget,” Garcia commented. “Hence the gover nment of the province

The provincial government has put up billboards featuring a huge ‘Gracias!’ at the main accesses to hospitals, agricultural zones and logistical hubs in recognition of the work of health sector personnel and workers in key services like farming, law enforcement and transport. Diputacion de Almeria spokesman Fernando Gimenez underlined the “commitment and sacrifice” of the key sectors, which have intensified their work throughout the

State of Alarm, as well as the responsible attitude of the population. Gimenez underlined the importance of Almeria’s agricultural sector. “While countries have been under lockdown, the Almeria countryside and the transport workers have guaranteed the supply of fruit and vegetables to supermarkets throughout the European market.” He had words of praise too for Social Services staff, the province’s care home workers, cleaning and rubbish collection service employees, as well as for Almeria’s Local Police officers, firefighters, Civil Protection groups and State Security forces.

Quite a haul! GUARDIA CIVIL have seized one heck of a hashish haul on an Adra beach. The anti-drug operation led to the location of 2,640 kilos of the drug wrapped up in 88 bundles just as the traffickers were unloading it in the middle of the night. They scattered when the law arrived, but didn’t get far. The operation netted the arrest of 10 members of the gang, which the Guardia said was dedicated to drug trafficking on a grand scale. The Guardia also seized a van, a 4x4 and more than 1,000 litres of fuel in 54 cannisters.

STEPPED UP: Police have intensified checks on pharmacies and businesses providing essential services since the State of Alarm came into force. A WOULD-BE thief is under arrest after police caught him redhanded smashing the glass of a pharmacy vending machine to try and steal the contents in Almeria City. Police said the 30year-old tried to get away, but officers arrested him in a nearby street a few minutes later. Ever since the coronavirus State of Alarm came into force on March 14, Almeria National Police have stepped up checks on establishments provid-

ing essential services. In the case of pharmacies, police said contacts with sector professionals have been increased to listen to their demands in relation to security with the aim of preventing or at least minimising attempted thefts. Police reported they are communicating with and monitoring an average of 10 establishments a day in the provincial capital and in El Ejido, in addition to carrying out preventative patrols at all different times.

GUARDIA CIVIL are investigating an individual in Huercal-Overa suspected of stealing a customer’s credit card details and running up a large bill in online shopping. The victim claims that charges for purchases they had not made and messages requesting authorisation for payments of up to €1,000 starting appearing af-

Hope for reopening geological marvel PULPI Council is hoping to reopen its giant geode to the public in the not too distant future. The geological marvel is one of the biggest gypsum crystals in the world, and has attracted some 40,000 visitors since it was opened up to the public for guided tours at the beginning of last August. The Rica mine housing geode has been closed since the end of February for improvement works, and the local authority is now looking to

THE British Embassy in Madrid have confirmed that Wizz Air have completed their first flight connecting the Canary Islands to London. The low cost airline Wizz Air have successfully completed their flights from Tenerife to London Luton on Sunday May 3, despite its alleged cancelled flights from the Canary Islands and the UK yesterday, Saturday May 2. It has been confirmed the airline's next

scheduled flight will be departing from Tenerife to London on Tuesday May 5. The airline has recently confirmed that there will be ‘enhanced’ health and safety measures amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Cabin crew were required to wear masks and gloves on flight and distributed sanitising wipes for passengers. The aircraft will be disinfected overnight and magazines removed from the aircraft.

FOR the thousands of people from the UK who’ve settled in Spain, lockdown has meant much tougher restrictions than their friends and families at home. It’s only been a few days since adults have been allowed to leave their homes for a walk or individual sport, and it was only last week under 14’s were able to have short breaks for exercise - but still under rigid guidelines that police continue to enforce. Three expat households revealed how this has affected them and how they have coped in a televised video interview with ITV news before yesterday’s confinement relief measures. Kathleen and her son Jay relocated from Hampshire to Alicante, and Kathleen revealed

her son has been her rock. The mother and son have tried to have fun, but it hasn’t all been smiles. “I can’t say there have not been hard times, because there has been, but I am certainly glad that we are in this together.” Although they were looking forward to being able to leave the house after weeks of confinement, Kathleen admitted it was an anxious moment. “As exciting as it was, we were really apprehensive, because your whole life has changed in six weeks.” But what has helped them is the daily 8pm applause from their balcony. “After we’ve done our cheer and applause, the

police, fire or ambulance services drive past and wave at you all, so it’s a really nice community feeling. Derek and Michelle moved from Newbury to Murcia on the Costa Calida, to start a new life, and they have nothing but praise for Spain’s approach to the pandemic and their local community. When it comes to keeping themselves occupied, Michelle explained they have the perfect solution. “Because we’re in the entertainment business, we’ve got a full PA system and blast out a few tunes (from the balcony). “We all clap and they can hear it for miles around. Spanish and English all come together, so it’s brilliant.”

Nationalist parties from the Basque Country and Catalonia have already stated they will vote against it. The only possibility Sanchez has is if the PP seconds his proposal and they have already said they think there is no need for an extension.” He went on to point out that “If the State of Alarm is not extended, apart from causing an institutional crisis the phases which were announced would not be valid, and after May 11 each region would have to implement their own deescalation. “Andalucia, for example, is run by the PP and their proposal was more ambitious with the opening of businesses, on the other hand, the Valencian region is run by PSOE and theirs would be more in line with the main government.”

FOOTAGE of Civil Protection volunteers and councillors drinking wine in the street in Galicia has caused outrage on social networks. The group were seen clinking glasses while listening to music at the headquarters of the Motoclub Betanzos Cultural and Sports Association,

which was given over to the Civil Protection during the coronavirus crisis to give them a base. The images have caused upset because they were reportedly taken ‘on the same day that 13 coronavirus positives were registered at the local hospital in Betanzos.’ One of the councillors

Handle With Care AN Alicante man has been arrested by the National Police for trying to send a mortar grenade in the post. The investigation began with an emergency call from security staff about a suspicious package they scanned in the city, which they believed had something dangerous in it. A bomb disposal team deactivated the device, which was a 50mm mortar grenade, and could have caused serious damage if it had detonated. Police officers managed to locate where the package was meant to gone to, namely to an address in Palma de Mallorca. The Palma resident admitted to buying other non-dangerous items from the man in Alicante, who was then arrested for the crimes of possession of explosives and public disorder.

The detainee was engaging in hostile rhetoric on Twitter and threatening state institutions and personalities such as King Felipe VI. THE British Benevolent Fund has launched an emergency appeal to raise funds to deal with the impact of the Coronavirus. The BBF provides financial assistance to UK citizens in Spain and has seen a dramatic increase in numbers and scope of cases being dealt with. Throughout the lockdown, the BBF has remained fully operational and has responded to the surge in requests for financial assistance directly, through the British consular network as well as partner charities across Spain. Jaws returns A SHARK of between three and four metres in length has seemingly come close to the shore of Calahonda beach on the Costa del Sol on May 3, according to Ideal Granada, which has shared video footage on social media. Its presence is said to be due to the lack of a c t i v i t y i n t h e w a t e r, with a reduction in marine traffic causing the shark to approach the coastline. Calahonda is apparently a common area for shortfin mako sharks, but the species in the clip is not believed to be one of them. The monarch met with the chief of the World Tourism Organisation, Zurab Pololikashvili, in Madrid, and was told that the tourism sector had a massive part to play in economic and social recovery in the face of the current crisis. According to the WTO’s figures, tourism accounts for 12 per cent of the GDP of Spain, which in 2019 received nearly 84 million international tourists, whose expenditure amounted to around €100 billion.

They’ve already got back into business by setting up a home delivery service, and are looking forward to using their terraces to entice customers back as soon as possible. Mani Vehtu is the manager of their Quesada restaurant, which recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. “It has been very difficult for us but we have al-

ready had a great response from our customers,” Mani said. “The good news is that at Quesada we have a very large terrace which normally can cater for around 60 people, so even with the restrictions, when we are allowed to reopen soon, we will be able to create quite an atmosphere outside.” Mani added: “The uncertainty has meant that it has been difficult to plan ahead, as we like to order and prepare food in advance, but at least we now have a timetable.”

La Sala Banus will open for food and drinks on May 15 as will Villa Toscana just across the road. La Sala by the Beach which relies more heavily on tourist visits will probably open towards the end of May, possibly for weekends initially. Reservations will be required and to keep up-to-date, visit the Sala Group website as the company gears itself to make September the new May.

Heidi and Sam are going to wait a couple of weeks longer, concerned that being able to serve only 50 per cent of their outside tables will not be viable. “We’re not opening until at least May 25, it’s not worth it,” said Heidi, pointing out the rules are still not clear with regards to the distance between tables for example. “We won’t be able to offer our carvery, as you can only serve to the table. Social security payments alone cost thousands a month, and then there is autonomo. “We are in regular contact with customers, and most of them do not want to leave the house just yet, so we would rather wait a couple of weeks.”

FOR El Barril German restaurant in Las Marinas, Denia, it still a little too early to say for sure exactly what date they plan to start serving customers once again, but it will hopefully be within the next three weeks. Ilona said: “At the moment we do not know for sure, but it won’t be May 11. We are talking to our lawyers next week and I think it is going to be more likely to be May 15 when we reopen. “We need to have a lot more information about things like exactly how many tables we can serve and how. Things are complicated and there is a lot to sort out but we look forward to opening.”

Jemma said the impact of having to close her business’s doors and all the uncertainty about how long it would be before she could open up shop again and under what conditions, as well as with the correct safety measures in place, has been an enormous worry. Not only has she had all the concerns as a cafe owner of having to

deal with a crisis which completely paralysed all business, she also feels responsibility for her staff and for her customers, stressing “I don’t want to compromise their safety.” As for what will happen to her business this month and next, Jemma says “it is very much going to depend on the government’s approach to lifting the lockdown and the additional support available through the de-escalation, especially from the staff perspective and the impact on them.”

Too much tax

Support for Iberia and Vueling IAG (International Airlines Group) which owns Aer Lingus, British Air­ ways, Iberia and Vueling as well as a number of smaller airlines is struggling financially following the outbreak of the coronavirus Covid­19 pandemic. It has already warned that it may need to lose 12,000 staff from British Airways unless the British government gives it financial support which seems unlikely at the time of writing. It should be remembered that British Airways was actually owned by the British government for decades and prior to privatisation in 1987 it had shed some 23,000 staff

WHEN pension freedoms were in­ troduced in 2015, it was possible for those over the age of 55 to withdraw money from their defined contribu­ tion pension pots. The first 25 per cent was tax free but if the pension provider does not hold an up­to­date tax code, an ‘emergency tax code’ will be applied which assumes a one­off payment is actually a monthly one. So far more than £600 million has been refunded by the tax office with an average payment in excess of £3,000 per claimant.

The law only says that the community can deprive the debtor of the right to vote in the AGM and can go to court against him to recover the debt. So it becomes a matter of what the judges say. For many years, the Spanish courts when challenged ruled that the community could not levy surcharges on the debtors or forbid them the use of services such as the swimming pool. That is why I said that surcharges were forbidden. In recent years, however, some courts have be­ gun to rule that surcharges may be acceptable, if they are written into the original statutes of the community. So the answer to your question depends on what the court rules in your specific case.

EURO EUR/GBP: Down from £0.89 to £0.87 EUR/USD: Down from $1.11 to $1.08 The euro has come under pres­ sure over the last month due to a lack of solidarity in the EU over the fiscal response to the coronavirus. So far EU leaders have been un­ able to agree upon a comprehen­ sive recovery package, and this has cast some serious doubts over the future of the union, with French President Emmanuel Macron warn­ ing the coronavirus crisis will be the EU’s moment of truth. But as we come to the end of April, the coronavirus situation in

Sterling dove at the start of April as Johnson was admitted to inten­ sive care due to complications from contracting the coronavirus.

GBP exchange rates were quick to bounce back however, with the pound being lifted by improving market sentiment and the Prime Minister’s discharge from hospital. Sterling faltered again towards the end of the month as some abysmal UK economic data limited the appeal of the currency once more. Going forward the main focus for GBP investors will be the UK gov­ ernment’s lockdown exit strategy and when we can expect restric­ tions to start being eased. US Dollar USD/GBP: Unmoved at £0.80 USD/EUR: Up from €0.89 to €0.91 The US dollar remained well sup­ ported through most of April as the uncertainty surrounding the coron­ avirus crisis and fears of a deep global recession kept demand for the safe­haven currency high.

These gains have been tempered somewhat however by US jobless claims, as they revealed that US un­ employment has skyrocketed by a staggering 25 million people since the start of the coronavirus pan­ demic. The US dollar has begun to taper off in recent days as a more posi­ tive mood falls upon markets on the expectation that countries will continuing reopening their economies. Looking ahead, demand for the US dollar will likely continue to sub­ side so long as the global coron­ avirus outbreak continues to show signs of having peaked. LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THE BBC truly is a national disgrace. It really is time this biased bunch were reined in and brought under some kind of collective control. Irrespective of the obvious need to pull everyone together and encourage unity against this devastating virus, this organisation continues to take every opportunity to cause unrest and disquiet among the citizens of the UK - ie their recent Panorama offering - unrepentantly doing all they can to turn the whole thing into a political exercise and bring the government into disrepute. Even their reporting of the government managing to reach their promised target of testing was reported through gritted teeth and some kind of endeavour to temper this magnificent effort by coming up with the lame excuse that ‘numbers of the tests had been carried out at home’! When was the last time you

Well I certainly can’t. These left wing manipulators will never forgive the Conservative Party for the drubbing their leftie pals received at the last election. And it doesn’t end there. Their recent handling and subsequent corruption of the interview of their other arch enemy Donald Trump, really

When they gleefully showed the President stating his views on how a virus vaccination could possibly be some derivative of bleach or heat, they made it appear that he had stridden out to the podium and launched into some maniacal mad scientist tirade. What they conveniently edited out was the footage that showed Trump had al-

ready been on stage listening to scientists discussing these very possibilities for some 20 minutes before he made his remarks. He was merely making loose comments regarding what they had already been lectured on by medical experts. Although his reactions were somewhat bumbling, taken in their true context, they were nowhere near as crazed as this biased bunch

attempted to dupe the public into believing. You know what really gets me? These disgruntled jokers actually sit in their multi-million studios of the BBC plotting and conniving how they can manipulate and alter their biased reports to suit their own ends and the British taxpayer is actually footing the bill! Talk about adding insult to injury. The sooner this organisation is replaced by a team of unbiased presenters and directors who simply report the truth and not use their constant outpourings as a means to their own political ends the better. What about a few positive messages of an enemy being slowly but surely overcome? What about an upbeat touch of ‘hope and glory’? Heaven knows the viewing public could certainly do with it. CONSTRUCTION CRITICISM DEAR Euro Weekly News, I went food shopping to Aldi in La Cala this morning, and I could not believe my eyes. Five construction workmen came into Aldi without masks or gloves and walked around the store rubbing shoulders with each other, picking up food and putting back on the shelves with no gloves on. At the checkout, they were again shoulder to shoulder paying at the till and the Aldi assistant said nothing to them. On leaving the store and going to my car I looked across the road at the construction site and again was surprised to see workmen together, no masks, no gloves. THE idea that the Coronavirus pandemic might have some upsides that could help us live better lives seems guilt-ridden in the face of the destruction and death it has caused. Domestic violence is up, workers are sleeping rough on the streets, and poor families are experiencing a lack of basic needs. Yet in the dark times, there has been some hope. For some of those fortunate enough to have a safe and secure home environment that they can work from, the lockdown has had some unexpected silver linings. Some people with mental health conditions have reported feeling much better since the lockdown started. For those without an underlying mental health diagnosis, the simple factors of more time to sleep, more time with pets and loved ones and not having to deal with the overstimulation of life, have led to a greater sense of general well-being. Results of surveys of over 74,000 people have shown that well-being has risen over the last few weeks, and anxiety levels have fallen for both people with and without existing mental health disorders. While the trend may yet change as the lockdown continues, and absolute levels of anxiety are higher for people with mental illness than for those without, the findings are intriguing. People who are driven by keeping up appearances, productivity, achievement and being there for everyone have found themselves chilling out, landing in a feeling of relief at not having to put on a performance. We have a precious opportunity to think about the ways in which a ‘normal’ life can make people anxious and ill. If we can change the arrangement of the post-pandemic world to prioritise compassion, pay people decently, value essential workers, and to fund our public services properly, perhaps we can hang on to this silver lining.

During the six weeks, they could have put strict controls on our borders to keep the virus out, ordered masses of PPE and started to gear the NHS for the emergency to come. And when they did realise they had to do something they ordered a weak lockdown, nothing like we have endured in Spain and we are now seeing, day after day, the highest new infections and deaths in Europe. For 10 years the Tories ran down the NHS and care homes. Boris needed the NHS to save his life and he had a eureka moment in realising its importance and immigrant nurses who care for him and who his extreme right-wingers in his government would like to see jump through hoops to work in the UK. I will, however, applaud Leapy for his comments about the role religion has played in the spread of the virus. In the Far East, both Muslims and Christians had mass religious assemblies around January and many caught the virus. Muslims went back to Iran where there is a practice of touring shrines and kissing them and Roman Catholics returned to Italy to resume kissing the marble stone of the Madonna in churches and share Communion chalices. You can just imagine how many of the ‘faithful’ were infected and went on to infect others. Then there was a Spain v Italy football match in Milan... the rest is history. WE ALL NEED HELP GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS a child, my mother instilled the importance of kindness, to myself and my brother. I remember her telling us, that if someone is rude, be kind back to them, as they deserve our help. They deserve kindness the most. We were taught to treat everyone equally, and I like to think that I do. There are many forms of kindness, the most powerful, being kindness that requires nothing in return. Kindness that doesn’t require a fanfare, or rounds of applause. Kindness that goes on, each day, all over the world and keeps the earth’s heart pumping. As the lockdown continued, I was inundated by requests from people asking me to join their charities, or help out in some way. I was shocked by the amount of people who contacted me - mainly via social media some pretty aggressively, as if what they were asking me to do was an order, rather than a request. To those I don’t know that contacted me, I offer a tip - if you want to be taken seriously, a private message on Facebook explaining why I ‘must’ do something, or ‘need’ to help, isn’t the way to go. Since moving to Marbella, I befriended a guy called Jesus. We met one very hot day last year, when he was sheltering under a tree from the sweltering afternoon sun. We spoke, and he explained he was living rough. He wouldn’t accept any money, the offer of a beer, or anything at all. Days later, I spotted him again, and decided that perhaps he would feel better about things if I just dropped a small bag of groceries with him, and left it at that. So, that’s what I did. I selected some basic stuff - bread, water, cheese and fruit. I also picked up a toothbrush, toothpaste and hand wipes. He stood up and hugged me. There on a quiet street in Marbella, two strangers became friends, and have remained friends. We catch up during the week and have a coffee. He makes sure I’m okay, and I do the same for him. Of course, lockdown meant we weren’t able to see each other so much. I must say, I missed his wit and his company. I hadn’t seen him in almost a month,

KINDNESS: Requires nothing in return. and I worried for him. Then, as I was going to the supermarket, I spotted him, and returned to surprise him with some goodies. We chatted briefly and promised to catch up properly once we can. My friend took a photo from the car, and I posted it to Facebook, as a simple, gentle reminder to be kind. Some people claimed I was looking for attention, while others told me that they do similar things. For many years, I was involved with many charities, sitting on committees to organise glamorous balls and parties. As I sat in the weekly meetings for these events, I lost my mind. Sitting around discussing how to make their event the best. Wasting time drinking Martinis, discussing guest-lists. I’m aware these events raise serious money, but they bore me. I’ve attended so many, and each time it’s the same thing, people hoping to be photographed for Tatler, or whatever publication is present. As if a photo in a glossy magazine is their reward for their charitable efforts. As if the photograph is their round of applause. As for me seeking attention, trust me, I’ve never had any problem getting it. Most of the time for the wrong reasons, but attention is something I’ve become used to. I do what I do, simply because it feels right. As for applause, save it for real heroes, like the frontline staff who have battled on through this sad time. They deserve our applause. In fact, they deserve so much more.

There will be days when getting out of bed feels like a mission, when the last thing you want to do is smile. Worry takes over, you feel just... mergh and there’s nothing anyone can say or do to change that. When this happens, do not and I repeat DO NOT put further pressure on yourself! Allow yourself to feel however you want. If you want to cry for absolutely no reason, cry! If you want to scream at the top of your voice to release then scream. If you want to sit in front of the TV and watch rom coms all day, DO IT! It is more than ok to have those off days. Those off days are the days that actually help us grow. They actually teach us what we don’t want in life, they actual-

DAILY CHALLENGES: Take one small step every day. ly teach us that in order to feel better, we have to think differently. They show us who and what we want to be or do. They teach us that bad days are not the end of the world as long as we don’t stay there for too long. As a woman who suffered with depression, those off days were frequent. I would wallow around in self-pity for weeks on end, questioning who I was, what I was supposed to be doing, who I was meant to be. The more pressure I put on myself for feeling low, the lower it made me feel, the more depressed I became. It was a vicious circle! When I started studying Anxiety Management and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I taught myself to release the pressure. If I had a day where I felt low or depressed but still got through that day that was some-

thing to celebrate right? I’d managed to get through the day and to me that was all that mattered. I decided to give myself small, daily challenges to help me overcome the depressed state I was in, they were as follows: I got through today therefore; my challenge for tomorrow is to smile at least once. When i succeeded, it encouraged me to do more... I managed to smile twice today therefore, tomorrow my challenge is I’m going to do my hair and make-up to make myself feel bett e r. It’s quite possible to write a shopping list in your h e a d while considering all the emails you have to reply to and reminding yourself of your child’s school activities all on your drive. In fact, it’s easy to do all of this and not remember in the slightest your actual drive to work. This is a mild form of dissociation which anyone can experience. When I dissociate because of m y b i p o l a r d i s o r d e r, m y c o n sciousness separates from the brain that feels the suffering. When I can’t take the suffering, my mind knows how to do it. For me, it often starts out as an extreme form of distraction from the negative thoughts. I simply think of anything that is unemotional. I do things that are unemotional. I can get through a whole day and not actually remember what happened, I simply just get through it. Over the years, I have succeeded in tuning out just about the

whole world around me. Engage me in a conversation, and sooner or later you will pick up an odd mannerism: My eyes glaze over, I’m unresponsive. I am not present. Literally I am somewhere else. I can hear you speak but I simply cannot listen to the conversation. When the pain becomes too much, I admit to myself that I am suffering, know that it will end, I just push it to the side and sometimes when I do this, I’m alive and I know I’m alive but it doesn’t feel the same as being alive. (That makes per fect sense in my head!!) It’s like looking at everything from far away or through a fog. It’s not what I w o u l d c a l l pleasant but it is an escape from the pain - momentarily, anyway. Of course, the pain is just waiting for me once I emerge from the fog. Nevertheless, while dissociation is temporary it can prevent me from taking more permanent steps to end my suffering. Because, after all, when I wake up the next day, I likely won’t feel as worn out and dragged down. And when I’m back to that state not in as much pain as before - I appreciate not having taken more permanent action or decisions. I’m not saying it’s right for everyone and certainly too much of it or it being uncontrolled can be bad, I’m just saying it works for me. Have you ever experienced disassociation? CONSULAR MATTERS THIS is the title of one of the books written by the author Gabriel García Márquez who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. It is one of the best books that I have read and it reminds me of those endless summer afternoons sitting on the sand at the beach watching the evening fall. I read it when I was still at university studying the last year of my Law degree and I never thought that I would experience a situation that would come anywhere near the epidemic situation in which part of the story of the characters in the book unfolds. And that is why my consular history of recent weeks can be titled alluding to the title of the book by my beloved Colombian writer ‘Collaboration in the times of the Coronavirus.’ The law firm that I run here on the Costa Del Sol ‘Just Law

Consular Corps of Malaga is made up of 42 countries and each of them has had its own circumstances and problems to face in order to attend to and resolve the different problems of its citizens. During the coronavirus alarm, the members of the Consular Corps of Malaga have all worked with each other. We have been generous and have worked tirelessly to give support to each

We have shared problems, interpretations of the measures adopted, legal news, contact with authorities and any other issues that may have served to help another colleague to solve in the most effective and accurate way the problems which faced the citizens repented by myself and other Consuls. Diplomacy is almost always identified with protocol acts and social and cultural activities, but what underlies it is a dedication to work at critical moments. In fact, that is the foundation of our existence, to be prepared so that in cases of extreme urgency or need we are the link between our citizens and the countries we represent. Today my applause at 8.00pm goes to all the health personnel who have proven to be brave and altruistic, as well as the rest of the groups that make it possible for us to continue having our essential needs covered, and also to my colleagues in the Consular Corps of Malaga.

do its best to ensure we never know. Wuhan is clearly in the frame and slowly the focus is starting to shift from the wet market to the laboratory. Was it poor biosecurity or something more sinister and a subsequent Chinese government coverup? Either way, rich material for a dramatised documentary. Did anyone watch ‘Chernobyl’? State coverups, state lies, state mishandling of everything, to the detriment of hundreds of thousands. Ring any

bells? Countries need to be held accountable for such atrocities. But will they? Don’t bank on any answers soon - if ever. As the world throws up many more questions than answers, we’re just going to have to wait - just like for a vaccine - for quite a long time. Remember what Winston Churchill said after that other battle, El Alamein? “This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”
