AT the time of going to print, as from Monday, May 11, many businesses will be looking to reopen as isolation laws ease off in Spain. Before you zoom off for your first haircut in almost two months or to meet up with your friends for a boozy lunch, there are some things you should think about. STOP: Firstly, do you have your face mask on? With many more people on the street and visiting these places of business, you are putting yourself and others at risk if you are not protected. Spain is a country that kisses hello and goodbye, for now, you should remain two metres apart. The more carefully we treat this de-escalation the more likely it is to succeed. THINK: The family coffee shop on the corner with the best espresso, the little restaurant you had amazing tapas, the local fruit shop with fresh produce, the panaderia that is open all hours on a skeleton staff.
Who will need your money the most? The community has grown together during this crisis and shown that we can care for and respect each other. Now it’s your turn to give back to your community. GO: If we want to be able to carry on enjoying life as we had it before we need those businesses that provide for us, entertain us, welcome us and make people want to live in each town. The first few weeks could mark the closure of some smaller businesses, your visit could pay their staff, their rent or their next delivery. Show them that their service counts. They may have always wanted to own a coffee shop, hairdressers or bar and this health crisis could wipe out their dream. Now is the time to fight for them. Who is your community hero?

Charitable chef
EWN spoke exclusively to Dani Bowler, MasterChef UK contestant and private chef, who has been helping the CDT of Alicante with their solidarity project #AGSolidaria to provide food for families in the area that h a v e b e e n a ff e c t e d b y t h e C o ro n a v i r u s pandemic. The group of around 30 volunteers have been making around 1,200 meals a day and this is the third week of the initiative which will last for another 40 days minimum. There is a team of chefs in the kitchen who have been making dishes like gazpacho for starters and four-cheese macaroni. Also, they have a pro-

Benidorm beaches
BENIDORM’S beaches which are favourites with expats and holidaymakers alike, look set to be open for the summer as the town hall announced a project to get them back in play before July. According to the deescalation time frame set by the Spanish government the last stage should end on June 21, at which time Benidorm Council intends to have its beaches - which attract 40,000 daily at the height of the season open. Mayor, Toni Perez, said one of the ideas on the table is to control the capacity so that social distance can be guaranteed. The council is looking into the possibility of dividing the beach into
different sectors that will make it possible to avoid contagion, “by providing sufficient space for the number of people admitted at that time,” Perez told Alicante Plaza. He said “it should be noted that the beaches gather some 40,000 people on the busiest days, 25,000 in Levante (where there is more tourist accommodation) and 15,000 in Poniente.” But Benidor m has ruled out installing screens to divide plots, arguing heat and lack of a breeze “were sufficient factors to discard this idea”: In addition, it would be difficult to keep up health and hygiene standards from day to day.

Raising spirits ITS doors may be closed to the public, but for weeks, Restaurante Granados in Alfaz del Pi has been offering coffee for free to all health professionals, forces and security forces, cleaning services and workers. And now that members of the public are allowed out for limited walks and individual sports, they are offering their services to them too - with priority given to those on the frontline. A post from the management on We Love Albir Facebook page, explained: “We started with the solidarity coffee initiative early on in the State of Alarm. “We are serving coffee for free to all the people who visit us on the terrace of the restaurant.

BENIDORM Council has offered to help kick start phase one of Spain’s de-escalation. The local authority has offered to work with the hospitality sector in planning their terraces after the Spanish government announced bars, restaurants and cafes can initially only serve 30 per cent of their outside capacity. The council is also offering a free disinfection of accesses, terraces and facades for those who want to open
their doors. He is asking establishments who want to take advantage of this first phase of de-escalation to send their proposals for tables and chairs to Benidorm Council. They will be studied by a council technical team, and also discussed with relevant neighbourhood associations, “to ensure there are future disagreements if changes need to be made to outside

More freedom MORE than 80 towns in the Alicante Province enjoy almost full deconfinement. Municipalities of less than 5,000 people, have different rules to the rest of the province, according to the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, following demand from rural areas. Residents of 83 towns and villages, out of 141, are not be limited to when they take their walks each day under the first stages of de-escalation of State of Alarm measures in Spain. Most of them are concentrated in the Marina Alta, Marina Baixa, part of Alcoy and La Foia de Castalla and Vega Baja areas, where the rules are far more relaxed for strolls and individual physical activity. Here “there is no risk of agglomeration,” said the Valencian Ministry of Health after the announcement was made by the Spanish government. Therefore, residents of many small towns and villages won’t be governed by the parameters established by the government which divide the 17 hours of activity - from 6am to 11pm - into different groups. POSTAL workers in Alicante discovered an explosive device destined for Mallorca while scanning suspicious packages. The Explosives Deactivation Unit (TEDAX-NRBQ) of the Provincial Police Station of Alicante was immediately alerted, and the parcel was isolated.
Explosive parcel National Police have since arrested a 42-year-old Spanish man in the city, who faces charges of possession of explosives and public disorder. Once security measures were put in place, the explosive experts analysed the
package and discovered a 50mm mortar shell, with traces of explosive inside, which “could cause seriously damage during handling and shipping.” Officers of the Provincial Information Brigade of Alicante began an investigation, and contacted the recipient, who lives in Palma, Mallorca. He told investigators he had bought several objects from the same person, “none of which were related to explosives.” The sender had only provided limited details, according to sources, but National Police were eventually able to identify him as a 42-yearold Spanish man living in Alicante City. He was arrested for the alleged offence of possession of explosives and public disorder. His case will be heard at the Alicante Court of First Instance. Meanwhile, the mortar shell will be destroyed by TEDAXNRBQ officers.

Legendary race now called off THE legendary annual vertical ascent of the Gran Hotel Bali in Benidorm, which draws worldclass athletes, is one of the last sporting events in Alicante Province to be cancelled. The event, included in the Towerrunning World Circuit Association, scheduled for June 13, is hailed as one of the ‘most exciting and original’ competitions on the continent. But the organisation has confirmed in a statement it won’t take place this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We apologise for any inconvenience that may have been caused and trust that all of you understand that the decisions have been taken with care and prudence, as advised by health authorities and common sense,” it reads. The Vertical Ascent to the top of the Gran Hotel Bali, which for the last 16 years has attracted more than 500 athletes from around the world, was one of the only events in the sports calendar of the province of Al-

As well as maintaining social distancing, health and education experts are advising sanitiser gel on entering and leaving each classroom, the possible use of face masks, and rotating lunch breaks, as well as staggering start and finish times, so everyone is not arriving or leaving at once. Education centres will also need to be disinfected at least once a day, according to teaching unions, such as CCOO and UGT. They are also insisting on a health and safety plan to avoid schools becoming a focal point of contagion, with measures to protect students, teachers and other staff, as well as all families - particularly the most vulnerable and high-risk groups.

BOTH the Government and Public Service Unions have agreed that administration offices shall be open to the public from May 25 which should coincide with Phase II of the de-escalation process, with a limited capacity and only with a pre-booked appointment; however it will remain open until 9.00pm. This notion has appeared in the electronic agreement between the Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Function, Carolina Darias, and the unions, CSIF, UGT, CCOO and GIG. This has formed part of the framework of the transitional plan towards a new normality as they have incorporated organisational measures for a progressive face-to-face incorporation of public employees of the General State Administration. THE Education Ministry together with the regional governments are exploring a mixed model of online and assisted classes, with fewer students until a Covid19 vaccine is found. At the moment some regions allow around 28 students per class in primary schools, and up to 40 in secondary schools. However, class sizes will have to be cut to ensure social distancing measures to protect against the risk of Covid-19. Given the limited resources available to extend space in schools, the government (both regional and central) is proposing smaller classes with timetables split in half, so students either come in every morning or every afternoon, or on alternate days/weeks. WITH the whole of Spain still in lockdown, many tenants are having a hard time paying the rent. The coronavirus crisis has affected the whole of society and with over three million unemployed it was only time until tenants started to
default on payments. For the vast majority of people with mortgages, the banks have agreed to postpone or freeze payments but there are also thousands in the black economy with Spanish or English landlords that do not even have a

rental agreement, it was all done by a handshake. Herein lies the problem, tenants can’t pay
the rent and the landlords with proper contacts have to wait many months before the courts start up again. Private landlords in the UK without contracts have even a worse scenario as they cannot travel to Spain due to the restrictions. The hospitality industry
is the worst affected by far, waiters, waitresses, chefs, cleaners, even entertainers, the list is endless. It was made clear to EWN by a local real estate agent, it's pointless landlords rushing for eviction because let's face it, who are they going to get to move back in?
Many landlords are prepared to wait; only a few said they were angry and wanted the tenants out. The advice is, sit tight and wait until things start up again, it looks like mid-June will be the tur ning point, with any luck there will be a gradual return to ‘normality.’
Beachgoer defies lockdown A BEACHGOER defying lockdown regulations on when it’s permitted to be outdoors tried to drown a police officer when he told him it was prohibited to be on the sand at that time. The man was enjoying the sun on the beach in Talamanca, Ibiza with his mother and his girlfriend. Rather than listening to the police when they told them to go, the man turned aggressive. “Don’t touch me he shouted,” launching himself at one of the officers and pushing him into the water, the other officer rushing to help her colleague. “Three arrested in Talamanca. One tried to drown a policeman on the beach,” tweeted National Police deputy inspector Alfredo Perdiguero. First Flight Expats on TV
WIZZ AIR: Have started flights going between the Canary Islands and London. THE British Embassy in Madrid have confirmed that Wizz Air have completed their first flight connecting the Canary Islands to London. The low cost airline Wizz Air have successfully completed their flights from Tenerife to London Luton on Sunday May 3, despite its alleged cancelled flights from the Canary Islands and the UK yesterday, Saturday May 2. It has been confirmed the airline's next
scheduled flight will be departing from Tenerife to London on Tuesday May 5. The airline has recently confirmed that there will be ‘enhanced’ health and safety measures amid the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Cabin crew were required to wear masks and gloves on flight and distributed sanitising wipes for passengers. The aircraft will be disinfected overnight and magazines removed from the aircraft.
FOR the thousands of people from the UK who’ve settled in Spain, lockdown has meant much tougher restrictions than their friends and families at home. It’s only been a few days since adults have been allowed to leave their homes for a walk or individual sport, and it was only last week under 14’s were able to have short breaks for exercise - but still under rigid guidelines that police continue to enforce. Three expat households revealed how this has affected them and how they have coped in a televised video interview with ITV news before yesterday’s confinement relief measures. Kathleen and her son Jay relocated from Hampshire to Alicante, and Kathleen revealed
her son has been her rock. The mother and son have tried to have fun, but it hasn’t all been smiles. “I can’t say there have not been hard times, because there has been, but I am certainly glad that we are in this together.” Although they were looking forward to being able to leave the house after weeks of confinement, Kathleen admitted it was an anxious moment. “As exciting as it was, we were really apprehensive, because your whole life has changed in six weeks.” But what has helped them is the daily 8pm applause from their balcony. “After we’ve done our cheer and applause, the
police, fire or ambulance services drive past and wave at you all, so it’s a really nice community feeling. Derek and Michelle moved from Newbury to Murcia on the Costa Calida, to start a new life, and they have nothing but praise for Spain’s approach to the pandemic and their local community. When it comes to keeping themselves occupied, Michelle explained they have the perfect solution. “Because we’re in the entertainment business, we’ve got a full PA system and blast out a few tunes (from the balcony). “We all clap and they can hear it for miles around. Spanish and English all come together, so it’s brilliant.”

Roadmap for travel TOURISM bosses welcomed the news from package holiday company TUI of a planned return to normality. TUI’s CEO Fritz Joussen has called on EU member states to develop a “roadmap for travel” to ensure holidays are still a possibility for this year. Joussen said governments needed to provide a “clear perspective” on tourism within Europe and said a
roadmap would help to open up travel to countries that have made good progress in the battle against Covid-19. He said holidays at home shouldn’t be the only option available for Europeans, while also highlighting that bookings for 2021 were currently at a “favourable level.” Joussen said: “In Germany and Europe, too, travel and holidays
have considerable relevance for people. The traffic on our booking websites is 90 per cent compared to the previous year, although travel is currently not possible. Bookings for 2021 are also at a favourable level. “We must now emerge well from the crisis. Tourism within Europe needs a clear perspective. The EU and the member states should develop a roadmap for

B E I N G o n b o a rd a cruise ship as a member of crew nowadays is a bit like sailing on the Flying Dutchman, the legendary ghost ship doomed to sail the oceans forever. With ports closed to them and no passengers to look after, many of these huge liners are having to stay at sea and just come into ports for what are known as ‘Technical Calls.’ This week, Gibraltar will see four such calls, one a day from May 5 to May 8 from Veendam (owned by the Holland Line), Seabourn Ovation, Seabour n Encore and Seabour n Quest (all owned by Car nival Line). THE Guardia Civil has arrested a 48year-old man in Madrid, although he is originally from Guinea-Bissau, and a self-declared supporter of the Islamic State. The detainee was engaging in hostile rhetoric on Twitter and threatening state institutions and personalities such as King Felipe VI. As reported by the Ministry of Interior, in these comments, the detainee expressed various references to the

have not paid all of what they owe, thanks to the socalled second chance law (RDL Law 1/2015). In these uncertain and economically difficult times, it is very important that this possibility is understood, as in some cases, it may be possible to cancel all debts even if they have not be paid in full. This second chance mechanism provides two procedures or phases: 1. Extrajudicial agreements. In order to cancel the debts, the debtor must have at least tried to reach an outof-court agreement with their creditors, which may consist of a withdrawal from (or reduction of debts) or an extension of time (ie increase in the term for payment). This agreement must be made in accordance with the formalities and require-
ments established by law. Although no agreement may have been reached, trying to do so is essential to allow a debtor to request the subsequent cancellation of unpaid debts. If there is no possibility of agreement, then the second phase will begin: 2. Consecutive Insolvency Process (bankruptcy) If the agreement is not possible, an insolvency proceeding will be initiated in the case of individuals before the court, directly opening the liquidation phase. It is after the liquidation of the assets, when the benefit of the second opportunity can be requested, the law calls it the benefit of exoneration of the unsatisfied liability or debts. To request this forgiveness of the rest of the debts, and be able to start again, the debtor must prove that they
are a ‘good faith debtor’ and have not been convicted of crimes against property, workers’ rights, etc, and the debtor must prove that they have at least attempted an out-of-court settlement (phase 1 above). In addition, the debtor must have paid certain debts against the estate (ie bankruptcy administrator expenses), as well as privileged debts (ie mortgages) and at least 25 per cent of ordinary debts. Or failing that, if the debtor has not been able to pay these, they could apply for benefit of the second opportunity, by agreeing to submit to a payment plan, so that the debtor is seen to have collaborated with the judge and the bankruptcy administrator, and other requisites. If the benefit of the second opportunity is granted, that will mean that the balance of
the unpaid debts will be exonerated or forgiven. The benefit does not apply to maintenance (such as children under a certain age), nor public debt like taxes, etc. Therefore, if you are in an insolvency situation, be aware that you can apply, if you comply with the aforementioned conditions, to the mechanism of the second opportunity. In some cases and depending on the type of debt you have, this can allow you, before or in the bankruptcy or insolvency process, to cancel and end your debts, and start again. FOOTBALL is inching close to a return in Spain with the news that La Liga clubs have been allowed to test players for the coronavirus from this week. The Supreme Sports Council (CSD) said that the Health Ministry has approved its protocol for professional sportsmen and sportswomen to resume individual training at club facilities, including those belonging to football clubs.
La Liga Testing The testing is needed for individual training at football clubs to take place, and is just one step ahead of La Liga trying to finish off its season, which was interrupted in mid-March due to the pandemic.
Reports suggest that club doctors will only be able to administer tests by prescription and only if players have shown some symptoms or been exposed to people who may have the coronavirus.

After this week’s tests, players will be allowed to begin training, individually, in club facilities, with further assessments to be made by the Health Ministry to see if small group, and then full squad training can happen. Once those hurdles have been negotiated successfully, then the option of playing La Liga games behind closed doors might become a reality in the summer.
Emergency appeal THE British Benevolent Fund has launched an emergency appeal to raise funds to deal with the impact of the Coronavirus. The BBF provides financial assistance to UK citizens in Spain and has seen a dramatic increase in numbers and scope of cases being dealt with. Throughout the lockdown, the BBF has remained fully operational and has responded to the surge in requests for financial assistance directly, through the British consular network as well as partner charities across Spain. BARS lying dormant due to the lockdown are becoming infested with beer flies that are getting into the ventilation systems and drains, swamping residents. Hundreds of apartment blocks are suffering from beer flies in their thousands that are becoming pests, requests for help have been flooding into sanitary departments but they are grossly understaffed due to the coronavirus. Families with children already cooped up for weeks now have to suffer a plague of insects flying into their apartments, unable to contact the bar own-
ers, worried parents have been dousing the windows with buckets of disinfectant and squirting fly spray everywhere as that’s all they can buy at the moment. Professional cleaning firms cannot get access to most of the bars as some expats are stuck in the UK, not particularly rushing to get back as they face a desolated tourist market and of course full disinfection of their premises before they even start. Hundreds face denuncias but with the court system clogged up, it will be months if not years before anything comes of it.

King In Tourist Talks SPAIN'S King Felipe has been told that tourism is vital to the country’s recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. The monarch met with the chief of the World Tourism Organisation, Zurab Pololikashvili, in Madrid, and was told that the tourism sector had a massive part to play in economic and social recovery in the face of the current crisis. According to the WTO’s figures, tourism accounts for 12 per cent of the GDP of Spain, which in 2019 received nearly 84 million international tourists, whose expenditure amounted to around €100 billion.

Charity starts at home Reopening soon BENIDORM councillors recently held their first online plenary meeting since lockdown began last March. Broadcast live on the social media, the five-hour session spent two hours discussing the Partido Popular’s proposal that councillors should donate €1,000 from their pay to Caritas. Originally, Ciudadanos suggested that councillors and special advisers could donate 10 per cent of their salaries and, along with the PSOE; the party opposed the PP motion. Income depended on whether coun-
cillors worked full or part-time, they pointed out, and some Opposition councillors earned less than €1,000 a month. An obligatory €1,000 donation could affect their personal finances, Ciudadanos and PSOE spokesmen Juan Balestegui and Ruben Martinez, objected. The motion went through, although it was agreed to add the Red Cross as a beneficiary. Quoting the Local Police’s report, Perez explained that the needs of the local population are already covered by neighbourhood shops and supermarkets. “They comply scrupulously with the Covid-19 access regulations and health measures,” the mayor said. “At a time when travel is still restricted, reopening the markets would increase residents’ journeys inside Benidorm as well those of stallholders entering the town.” Perez also pointed out that mercadillo customers invariably belong to the age group that is most vulnerable to the coronavirus.

Albir - Alfaz NEWS MARINE life is making the most of the State of Alarm, with dolphins sighted off the coast of Albir enjoying having the waters almost entirely to themselves. Alfaz Del Pi Council has shared pictures taken by the Marine Surveillance Service of the Serra Gelada Natural Park on April 29, swimming close to the town’s lighthouse. In addition to their analysis of marine life, the team also released a tufted cormorant found injured. The letters contain a diploma, signed by Calpe’s mayor and Education councillor Rebeca Merchan, recognising that their good behaviour, patience and efforts during their weeks of quarantine have helped to combat the coronavirus.
As well as the diploma, the envelopes - which meet all safety standards - contain a colouring book and coloured pencils. AMJASA: Water company’s president Jose Chulvi with staff AMJASA will allocate €1 million of its 2019 profits to a Social Fund for families affected by the Covid-19 crisis. The board of the municipally-owned company that supplies Javea’s domestic water voted unanimously to use the fund to waive bills or apply rebates for those in a vulnerable position or at risk from social exclusion. Busy Bee STUNG: Police suspect the beehives were taken from a nearby farm. A STATE of Alarm flouter suspected of being a busy bee during lockdown is being investigated after Guardia Civil officers found several hives in his car. They claim the villager in Moaña ‘broke confinement rules to allegedly steal several beehives’ from a neighbouring mountain in Meira, Pontevedra.
According to a statement, a Seprona (Nature Protection Service) patrol stopped a van travelling along secluded tracks in a forest area known as ‘A Cerradiña,’ near his home. On inspecting the vehicle, the officers discovered the man was carrying ‘the components of several hives’ which they suspected had been
stolen from a bee farm close by. The hives were subsequently identified and recognised by the owner of the farm, who was not aware at that point they had been stolen. As well as being arrested for suspected theft, the 41-year-old was reported for breaching State of Alarm mobility restrictions.

Jaws returns A SHARK of between three and four metres in length has seemingly come close to the shore of Calahonda beach on the Costa del Sol on May 3, according to Ideal Granada, which has shared video footage on social media. Its presence is said to be due to the lack of a c t i v i t y i n t h e w a t e r, with a reduction in marine traffic causing the shark to approach the coastline. Calahonda is apparently a common area for shortfin mako sharks, but the species in the clip is not believed to be one of them. The images were taken from the pier on Sunday mor ning, “to the surprise of those who were walking on the beach,” claims Ideal, adding that a canoeist

VIEWS FROM THE H Mani Vehtu, Punjabi Palace THE Punjabi Palace have three Indian restaurants in the southern Costa Blanca at Los Montesinos, Quesada, and Cabo Roig. They’ve already got back into business by setting up a home delivery service, and are looking forward to using their terraces to entice customers back as soon as possible. Mani Vehtu is the manager of their Quesada restaurant, which recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. “It has been very difficult for us but we have al-
ready had a great response from our customers,” Mani said. “The good news is that at Quesada we have a very large terrace which normally can cater for around 60 people, so even with the restrictions, when we are allowed to reopen soon, we will be able to create quite an atmosphere outside.” Mani added: “The uncertainty has meant that it has been difficult to plan ahead, as we like to order and prepare food in advance, but at least we now have a timetable.”

Emerald Isle Targets Monday Return ROBERTO NOBBE of Bar Grizzly’s in Calpe told Euro Weekly News that they plan to reopen on May 11, providing things stay as they are. “If everything goes well, we will open on May 11. We are lucky because of the layout of Bar Grizzly’s, we can use inside and out. But it’s not going to be easy because we can only serve 50 per cent of our clients “We are still making plans and in talks with our lawyers, things are changing every day. These are very difficult times for all businesses, and we are fortunate as we are one of the larger ones. We really look forward to opening up and seeing our customers again.”
THE Emerald Isle on the Orihuela Costa at La Florida is a large complex serving traditional food for all ages, as well as having masses of outdoor space with a giant swimming pool at the centre. It’s also been the ‘go to’ venue for live entertainment, featuring many top performers from the Costa Blanca and the UK. The good news is that the Emerald Isle is planning to reopen to serve drinks this com-
ing Monday (May 11), according to owner Gerald Moran. “I want to be back in busi-
ness as soon as possible,” said Gerald. “I have to make sure that we follow all the rules of social distancing and have been in touch with the Orihuela Local Police to get things totally clear. “I also need the clarity to see how many staff members I can take back on during the different phases of reopening, which will also give me some idea of the amount of stock I need to order.”

HOSPITALITY SECTOR La Sala will reopen soon ONE of the landmarks of dining and entertainment in Banus is La Sala and Chairman of the Group, Ian Radford shared some of his plans for the easing of the State of Alarm lockdown after his first team meeting to discuss the future. Now that the gover nment has indicated that in Phase 1 terraces can be open with 50 per cent capacity, things are easier for the Sala directors and they have decided on the following plan (subject of course to amendment); The Havana 65 Cocktail Bar in the Av Marques del Duero in San Pedro will open for drinks only on May 11. La Sala Banus will open for food and drinks on May 15 as will Villa Toscana just across the road. La Sala by the Beach which relies more heavily on tourist visits will probably open towards the end of May, possibly for weekends initially. Reservations will be required and to keep up-to-date, visit the Sala Group website as the company gears itself to make September the new May.

B y the time we have paid all the outgoings we will be lucky to break even. Luckily we can offer a full takeaway service so we hope that might help us through this extremely difficult period.”

BLACK FLAME Bar, Grill and Carvery won’t be opening its doors on May 11. Heidi and Sam are going to wait a couple of weeks longer, concerned that being able to serve only 50 per cent of their outside tables will not be viable. “We’re not opening until at least May 25, it’s not worth it,” said Heidi, pointing out the rules are still not clear with regards to the distance between tables for example. “We won’t be able to offer our carvery, as you can only serve to the table. Social security payments alone cost thousands a month, and then there is autonomo. “We are in regular contact with customers, and most of them do not want to leave the house just yet, so we would rather wait a couple of weeks.”
FOR El Barril German restaurant in Las Marinas, Denia, it still a little too early to say for sure exactly what date they plan to start serving customers once again, but it will hopefully be within the next three weeks. Ilona said: “At the moment we do not know for sure, but it won’t be May 11. We are talking to our lawyers next week and I think it is going to be more likely to be May 15 when we reopen. “We need to have a lot more information about things like exactly how many tables we can serve and how. Things are complicated and there is a lot to sort out but we look forward to opening.”

Jemma said the impact of having to close her business’s doors and all the uncertainty about how long it would be before she could open up shop again and under what conditions, as well as with the correct safety measures in place, has been an enormous worry. Not only has she had all the concerns as a cafe owner of having to
deal with a crisis which completely paralysed all business, she also feels responsibility for her staff and for her customers, stressing “I don’t want to compromise their safety.” As for what will happen to her business this month and next, Jemma says “it is very much going to depend on the government’s approach to lifting the lockdown and the additional support available through the de-escalation, especially from the staff perspective and the impact on them.”

Very simply it’s a ‘parking lot’ for aircraft and with so many grounded due to the lockdown it is full with planes from many different airlines.

Too much tax
Support for Iberia and Vueling IAG (International Airlines Group) which owns Aer Lingus, British Air ways, Iberia and Vueling as well as a number of smaller airlines is struggling financially following the outbreak of the coronavirus Covid19 pandemic. It has already warned that it may need to lose 12,000 staff from British Airways unless the British government gives it financial support which seems unlikely at the time of writing. It should be remembered that British Airways was actually owned by the British government for decades and prior to privatisation in 1987 it had shed some 23,000 staff

WHEN pension freedoms were in troduced in 2015, it was possible for those over the age of 55 to withdraw money from their defined contribu tion pension pots. The first 25 per cent was tax free but if the pension provider does not hold an uptodate tax code, an ‘emergency tax code’ will be applied which assumes a oneoff payment is actually a monthly one. So far more than £600 million has been refunded by the tax office with an average payment in excess of £3,000 per claimant.

Further to your reply in the EWN of April 23 29 stating that Spanish community law pro hibits communities of property owners from placing surcharges for late payment of community fees, could you please direct me to the section of the horizontal law where this appears? No I can not. This is because the law it YOU AND THE LAW self neither pro IN SPAIN hibits nor empow ers communities to levy surcharges. The law only says that the community can deprive the debtor of the right to vote in the AGM and can go to court against him to recover the debt. So it becomes a matter of what the judges say. For many years, the Spanish courts when challenged ruled that the community could not levy surcharges on the debtors or forbid them the use of services such as the swimming pool. That is why I said that surcharges were forbidden. In recent years, however, some courts have be gun to rule that surcharges may be acceptable, if they are written into the original statutes of the community. So the answer to your question depends on what the court rules in your specific case.

EURO EUR/GBP: Down from £0.89 to £0.87 EUR/USD: Down from $1.11 to $1.08 The euro has come under pres sure over the last month due to a lack of solidarity in the EU over the fiscal response to the coronavirus. So far EU leaders have been un able to agree upon a comprehen sive recovery package, and this has cast some serious doubts over the future of the union, with French President Emmanuel Macron warn ing the coronavirus crisis will be the EU’s moment of truth. But as we come to the end of April, the coronavirus situation in
EURO: Buoyed by prospect of countries starting to reopen their economies. the Eurozone has markedly im proved, with the euro buoyed by the prospect of countries starting to reopen their economies in the coming weeks. However, the road to recovery remains long, and the single curren cy is vulnerable to further losses due to gloomy data. The Eurozone’s upcoming GDP figures are likely to provide particular cause for con cern.
Pound GBP/EUR: Up from €1.11 to €1.14 GBP/USD: Unmoved at $1.24 The pound has traded in a wide range over the past four weeks, mostly in response to the health of Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Sterling dove at the start of April as Johnson was admitted to inten sive care due to complications from contracting the coronavirus.
GBP exchange rates were quick to bounce back however, with the pound being lifted by improving market sentiment and the Prime Minister’s discharge from hospital. Sterling faltered again towards the end of the month as some abysmal UK economic data limited the appeal of the currency once more. Going forward the main focus for GBP investors will be the UK gov ernment’s lockdown exit strategy and when we can expect restric tions to start being eased. US Dollar USD/GBP: Unmoved at £0.80 USD/EUR: Up from €0.89 to €0.91 The US dollar remained well sup ported through most of April as the uncertainty surrounding the coron avirus crisis and fears of a deep global recession kept demand for the safehaven currency high.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT THE BBC truly is a national disgrace. It really is time this biased bunch were reined in and brought under some kind of collective control. Irrespective of the obvious need to pull everyone together and encourage unity against this devastating virus, this organisation continues to take every opportunity to cause unrest and disquiet among the citizens of the UK - ie their recent Panorama offering - unrepentantly doing all they can to turn the whole thing into a political exercise and bring the government into disrepute. Even their reporting of the government managing to reach their promised target of testing was reported through gritted teeth and some kind of endeavour to temper this magnificent effort by coming up with the lame excuse that ‘numbers of the tests had been carried out at home’! When was the last time you

RECENT OFFERING: The BBC need reined in and brought under some kind of collective control. observed this lot actually praise anything this government has done in its handling of the crisis? Well I certainly can’t. These left wing manipulators will never forgive the Conservative Party for the drubbing their leftie pals received at the last election. And it doesn’t end there. Their recent handling and subsequent corruption of the interview of their other arch enemy Donald Trump, really
does merit some kind of legal action. When they gleefully showed the President stating his views on how a virus vaccination could possibly be some derivative of bleach or heat, they made it appear that he had stridden out to the podium and launched into some maniacal mad scientist tirade. What they conveniently edited out was the footage that showed Trump had al-
ready been on stage listening to scientists discussing these very possibilities for some 20 minutes before he made his remarks. He was merely making loose comments regarding what they had already been lectured on by medical experts. Although his reactions were somewhat bumbling, taken in their true context, they were nowhere near as crazed as this biased bunch
attempted to dupe the public into believing. You know what really gets me? These disgruntled jokers actually sit in their multi-million studios of the BBC plotting and conniving how they can manipulate and alter their biased reports to suit their own ends and the British taxpayer is actually footing the bill! Talk about adding insult to injury. The sooner this organisation is replaced by a team of unbiased presenters and directors who simply report the truth and not use their constant outpourings as a means to their own political ends the better. What about a few positive messages of an enemy being slowly but surely overcome? What about an upbeat touch of ‘hope and glory’? Heaven knows the viewing public could certainly do with it. Property market outlook post lockdown by Mark Paddon Building Surveyor
WORKING as a Building Surveyor on the Costa Blanca for over 15 years Mark Paddon has good knowledge of the residential property market in the key geographical areas of EWN readership. Here’s his view on how the health crisis may affect the property market: Just prior to lockdown I was super busy with buyer’s structural surveys at double the normal rate, following the Brexit date. Costa Blanca and Costa Del Sol agents were also busier than normal with a reported 150 per cent increase in business following Brexit. In short, the local market was booming! Travel concerns and flight cancellations, of course, put an abrupt stop to property buyers in midMarch. Whilst some estate agents have seen tentative buyers withdraw from negotiations, many also continue shortlisting properties for property hunters and have numerous deals awaiting completion as
soon as the notaries are operational. The big question is the same everywhere ie how long will this health crisis last? It is a common opinion that if all went back to normal within weeks, the market and demand would bounce back very quickly. If on the other hand flights do not resume for some months, the sector would inevitably be harder hit, with prices potentially dropping and the return of market buoyancy being slower. It is essential however to consider that unusual circumstances also result in some unusual positive factors that will help to counteract the inevitable negatives. 1. People’s dreams don’t change - If someone is planning to invest in Spain, even if their investment capital decreases, they are more likely to downsize and opt for a smart apartment instead of a four bedroomed villa with pool, rather than
scrap plans altogether. 2. Price reductions fire up demand - If a long haul lockdown results in price reductions, this in part compensates for investment capital losses. 3. Life changes, change lives Despite the unfortunate circumstances a lot of working people are actually enjoying this temporary taste of early retirement. For some, there will be a reluctance to return to what they were doing pre-lockdown and for those that were thinking of buying a holiday or retirement home in Spain, some might well make the move sooner rather than later. 4. People with less money seek a lower cost of living - Spain still offers a lower cost of living for Northern Europeans and even nations like the French and Belgians have shown a strong interest in buying property and holidaying in Spain, where their money goes much further.
5. Reinvestment of wealth Whilst the loss of elderly loved ones is very sad, it’s a fact that as a result of the pandemic, some people will inherit early, (I often have clients that are investing money left to them by their parents). Furthermore, whilst bonds and shares have plummeted in value, bricks and mortar have proven to be a relatively safe place to have your money in a crisis of this type. In conclusion, the temporary shutdown actually has some positive aspects that will help offset the negatives and the general consensus for the future of residential property on the Costas is that, whilst exact timings are unknown, provided the Spanish sun still shines when lockdown finishes and air travel resumes, the Costas will remain a favourite for foreign buyers and sales will resume. CONSULAR MATTERS THIS is the title of one of the books written by the author Gabriel García Márquez who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. It is one of the best books that I have read and it reminds me of those endless summer afternoons sitting on the sand at the beach watching the evening fall. I read it when I was still at university studying the last year of my Law degree and I never thought that I would experience a situation that would come anywhere near the epidemic situation in which part of the story of the characters in the book unfolds. And that is why my consular history of recent weeks can be titled alluding to the title of the book by my beloved Colombian writer ‘Collaboration in the times of the Coronavirus.’ The law firm that I run here on the Costa Del Sol ‘Just Law

CONSULAR CORPS OF MALAGA: The members have all worked with each other. Spanish Solicitors’ has been prepared for teleworking and online services for a long time, this is an essential service to society, we lawyers cannot stop our activity, but for a week before the State of Alarm was decreed we had already prepared the Danish Consulate in Malaga, to whose team I dedicated my column last month to face the coronavirus challenge. I take this opportunity
to convey to my readers my satisfaction because having counted the hours spent and the issues resolved in our Consulate, we have been able to effectively deal with the greatest workload that a Danish consulate has ever had in Spain. Today we have to thank the collaboration, camaraderie and friendship of my colleagues from the Consular Corps of Malaga. The
Consular Corps of Malaga is made up of 42 countries and each of them has had its own circumstances and problems to face in order to attend to and resolve the different problems of its citizens. During the coronavirus alarm, the members of the Consular Corps of Malaga have all worked with each other. We have been generous and have worked tirelessly to give support to each

other. We have shared problems, interpretations of the measures adopted, legal news, contact with authorities and any other issues that may have served to help another colleague to solve in the most effective and accurate way the problems which faced the citizens repented by myself and other Consuls. Diplomacy is almost always identified with protocol acts and social and cultural activities, but what underlies it is a dedication to work at critical moments. In fact, that is the foundation of our existence, to be prepared so that in cases of extreme urgency or need we are the link between our citizens and the countries we represent. Today my applause at 8.00pm goes to all the health personnel who have proven to be brave and altruistic, as well as the rest of the groups that make it possible for us to continue having our essential needs covered, and also to my colleagues in the Consular Corps of Malaga.

MONDAY: Woke with a throbbing pain in a big toe. Gout. ‘Uhhhh. This is not good’ I tell Fifi, curled up beside me. Pooch gives me a look that says ‘man up, you big girl’s blouse. Pain’s good. It’s nature’s way of saying you’re not dead.’ I extract a pellet of Compy Supreme lodged between my butt cheeks. Fifi really must learn to stop bringing her dinner into bed. I begin scouring religious websites in search of material for my Freethinker blog. Find an item about a half-witted priest - he looks all of 12 warning people not to ‘idolise’ the NHS. He wants folk to tell MPs that churches must reopen in the midst of the pandemic. I take my blood pressure. Much higher than normal. Reports like these enrage me. Glance into the mirror be-

MASKED UP: I must look for a sexier protective mask. fore I leave home in search of a pharmacy for gout medication. With a mask and dark glasses I look like the Invisible Man. Must search online for a sexier protective mask, preferably one crafted in black leather. Nearest pharmacy shut, so I have to embark on a marathon trek to find one
that’s open. Limp home 90 minutes later after clocking up 6,666 steps. Not used to wearing boots. Feet are torturing me. Tuesday: Gout’s eased. Work for eight hours then go online in search of a fashionable mask. No luck. All the cute ones are designed for kids. But I find one site that sug-
gests that, post-lockdown, millions will continue wearing face coverings, and fashion houses are gearing up to meet the demand. One company that makes chic protective scarves like the one pictured is Polish company Lekko. Wednesday: What joy! Discover that six Miracle of Peru seeds planted on April 7 have sprouted. Years ago I rescued a half-dead plant placed near a dumpster. I nurtured it back to life. It gave thanks by producing shed-loads of seeds, and each summer we’ve been enjoying the fragrant flowers its offspring have been producing. Thursday: Make my first cottage pie in years. Husband Marcus’ eyes light up. ‘Proper nosh for a change,’ he exclaims, and wolfs down a huge helping. In case you’re wondering, no, I don’t serve him Compy Supreme on other days. Friday: The coin-like lithium batteries that power my Inter-
net banking card reader have given up the ghost. Have no idea where to buy replacements during lockdown. While I can get around the problem by entering a variety of passwords and codes to access my account, I won’t be able to turn on the TV if the batteries in the remote die. Saturday: Boredom drives me to tidy up my tool box. I heft the electric drill and wonder whether anything in the apartment demands a hole. I resist the temptation to hold it against my skull to end my quarantine misery. Sunday: Discover a book I haven’t read in years. ‘The Atheist’s Bible’ which has a quote from burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee that’s particularly apt during this pandemic: ‘Praying is like a rocking chair it’ll give you something to do but it won’t get you anywhere.’ The world would be a saner place if we had more people like her.

CONSTRUCTION CRITICISM DEAR Euro Weekly News, I went food shopping to Aldi in La Cala this morning, and I could not believe my eyes. Five construction workmen came into Aldi without masks or gloves and walked around the store rubbing shoulders with each other, picking up food and putting back on the shelves with no gloves on. At the checkout, they were again shoulder to shoulder paying at the till and the Aldi assistant said nothing to them. On leaving the store and going to my car I looked across the road at the construction site and again was surprised to see workmen together, no masks, no gloves. THE idea that the Coronavirus pandemic might have some upsides that could help us live better lives seems guilt-ridden in the face of the destruction and death it has caused. Domestic violence is up, workers are sleeping rough on the streets, and poor families are experiencing a lack of basic needs. Yet in the dark times, there has been some hope. For some of those fortunate enough to have a safe and secure home environment that they can work from, the lockdown has had some unexpected silver linings. Some people with mental health conditions have reported feeling much better since the lockdown started. For those without an underlying mental health diagnosis, the simple factors of more time to sleep, more time with pets and loved ones and not having to deal with the overstimulation of life, have led to a greater sense of general well-being. Results of surveys of over 74,000 people have shown that well-being has risen over the last few weeks, and anxiety levels have fallen for both people with and without existing mental health disorders. While the trend may yet change as the lockdown continues, and absolute levels of anxiety are higher for people with mental illness than for those without, the findings are intriguing. People who are driven by keeping up appearances, productivity, achievement and being there for everyone have found themselves chilling out, landing in a feeling of relief at not having to put on a performance. We have a precious opportunity to think about the ways in which a ‘normal’ life can make people anxious and ill. If we can change the arrangement of the post-pandemic world to prioritise compassion, pay people decently, value essential workers, and to fund our public services properly, perhaps we can hang on to this silver lining.

I have little time for right-wing or left-wing politics, but Labour has been doing nothing more than ask what the general public, those who run shops, have offices and whose jobs are at stake have been doing - and that is what the government see as the way out of lockdown. No doubt this week we will begin to get some answers. As for Leapy Lea’s praise for the Tories - may I remind him that in January and the beginning of February the government did nothing - and I am sure ministers were still fixated with Brexit, as they have been for three years. During the six weeks, they could have put strict controls on our borders to keep the virus out, ordered masses of PPE and started to gear the NHS for the emergency to come. And when they did realise they had to do something they ordered a weak lockdown, nothing like we have endured in Spain and we are now seeing, day after day, the highest new infections and deaths in Europe. For 10 years the Tories ran down the NHS and care homes. Boris needed the NHS to save his life and he had a eureka moment in realising its importance and immigrant nurses who care for him and who his extreme right-wingers in his government would like to see jump through hoops to work in the UK. I will, however, applaud Leapy for his comments about the role religion has played in the spread of the virus. In the Far East, both Muslims and Christians had mass religious assemblies around January and many caught the virus. Muslims went back to Iran where there is a practice of touring shrines and kissing them and Roman Catholics returned to Italy to resume kissing the marble stone of the Madonna in churches and share Communion chalices. You can just imagine how many of the ‘faithful’ were infected and went on to infect others. Then there was a Spain v Italy football match in Milan... the rest is history. WE ALL NEED HELP GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS a child, my mother instilled the importance of kindness, to myself and my brother. I remember her telling us, that if someone is rude, be kind back to them, as they deserve our help. They deserve kindness the most. We were taught to treat everyone equally, and I like to think that I do. There are many forms of kindness, the most powerful, being kindness that requires nothing in return. Kindness that doesn’t require a fanfare, or rounds of applause. Kindness that goes on, each day, all over the world and keeps the earth’s heart pumping. As the lockdown continued, I was inundated by requests from people asking me to join their charities, or help out in some way. I was shocked by the amount of people who contacted me - mainly via social media some pretty aggressively, as if what they were asking me to do was an order, rather than a request. To those I don’t know that contacted me, I offer a tip - if you want to be taken seriously, a private message on Facebook explaining why I ‘must’ do something, or ‘need’ to help, isn’t the way to go. Since moving to Marbella, I befriended a guy called Jesus. We met one very hot day last year, when he was sheltering under a tree from the sweltering afternoon sun. We spoke, and he explained he was living rough. He wouldn’t accept any money, the offer of a beer, or anything at all. Days later, I spotted him again, and decided that perhaps he would feel better about things if I just dropped a small bag of groceries with him, and left it at that. So, that’s what I did. I selected some basic stuff - bread, water, cheese and fruit. I also picked up a toothbrush, toothpaste and hand wipes. He stood up and hugged me. There on a quiet street in Marbella, two strangers became friends, and have remained friends. We catch up during the week and have a coffee. He makes sure I’m okay, and I do the same for him. Of course, lockdown meant we weren’t able to see each other so much. I must say, I missed his wit and his company. I hadn’t seen him in almost a month,
KINDNESS: Requires nothing in return. and I worried for him. Then, as I was going to the supermarket, I spotted him, and returned to surprise him with some goodies. We chatted briefly and promised to catch up properly once we can. My friend took a photo from the car, and I posted it to Facebook, as a simple, gentle reminder to be kind. Some people claimed I was looking for attention, while others told me that they do similar things. For many years, I was involved with many charities, sitting on committees to organise glamorous balls and parties. As I sat in the weekly meetings for these events, I lost my mind. Sitting around discussing how to make their event the best. Wasting time drinking Martinis, discussing guest-lists. I’m aware these events raise serious money, but they bore me. I’ve attended so many, and each time it’s the same thing, people hoping to be photographed for Tatler, or whatever publication is present. As if a photo in a glossy magazine is their reward for their charitable efforts. As if the photograph is their round of applause. As for me seeking attention, trust me, I’ve never had any problem getting it. Most of the time for the wrong reasons, but attention is something I’ve become used to. I do what I do, simply because it feels right. As for applause, save it for real heroes, like the frontline staff who have battled on through this sad time. They deserve our applause. In fact, they deserve so much more.

I didn’t make the list... at all! MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man I watch a lot of news in light of what’s going on in the world and have started making comparisons. The daily update in the UK by the government seems to be dignified, professional, well organised and to the point. The experts have their say then the press ask a few questions and the panel answer them the best they can. I’m not saying that some questions asked are not swerved but the experts all seem to be allowed to give what appears to be factual information. I watch Merkel talk about the German situation - she seems very much on top of the crisis and talks with authority and even Macron looks like he’s doing a good job. Then I turn over and watch the scariest one of them all - the daily Trump show. OMG! This buffoon stands there talking absolute garbage rambling on about the most ridiculous things like using disinfectant as a medicine. He tried to defend his remarks by saying they were
sarcastic. I watched the experts squirming as he said it then he tried to deny it. He contradicts himself, his experts, the WHO and the Governors of many states. I then watch what else is being said in the USA by the Governors of the different states but what happens is I actually don’t take in what they are saying, not because I’m not listening, but because I’m totally distracted by the wonderful ASL interpreters that stand at one side. Whenever I see someone doing sign language I remember a YouTube clip with someone signing at a rap concert and the audience seemed to be taking more notice of her than the artist. Is it just me? This, of course, doesn’t make me grumpy but to be honest I don’t give a monkey’s at the moment. In closing we are no longer spending ‘quality’ time with our loved ones. We are just spending time! In a recent survey in the Senker household, when asked the top 50 people Mrs S would like to spend lockdown with, in a surprising result I didn’t make the list... at all!

Neal is a funeral director and it would be easy to assume that his work may have been the place where he caught the virus but due to the nature of his job he regularly wears PPE, gloves and masks. “I woke up after staying up late one night, I felt hungover but had not drunk. My throat had swollen up like a balloon, I lost all desire to eat, it was so painful.” Neal’s description of the virus is terrifying, “It genuinely felt like an animal was crawling on me, from my throat to get in, then to my head

THERE is evidence that adopting a positive attitude towards life brings happiness, reduces stress levels and improves health. Habits for a positive mindset:

Daily physical exercise is one of the most important factors to maintain a healthy mind. Studies show that exercise reduces stress and anxiety levels, increases energy, moti-
vation and self-esteem. One of the habits to prevent negativity is to make positive affirmations to yourself. Each day you have hundreds of thoughts and some can be negative, to counter these create a list of five positive affirmations that motivate you and practice them every day. Studies indicate that gratitude increases satisfaction and improves relationships. Being grateful for what you have, from the greatest achievements to the smallest details, will help you to value many aspects of your life. Breathing exercises are healthy and beneficial to relax the nervous system and calm mental noise. Exercising contemplation through meditation helps you focus on the moment and see things from a different perspective.
I DISSOCIATE when everything becomes too much. I separate from the world. My brain and mind walks away from each other. What Is Dissociation? Dissociation is, ‘the separation of a group of mental processes or ideas from the rest of the personality, so that they lead an independent existence, as in cases of multiple personality.’ For example, have you ever driven to work and not remembered in the slightest the drive to work? It’s quite possible to write a shopping list in your head while considering all the emails you have to reply to and reminding yourself of your child’s school activities all on your drive. In fact, it’s easy to do all of this and not remember in the slightest your actual drive to work. This is a mild form of dissociation which anyone can experience. When I dissociate because of my bipolar disorder, my consciousness separates from the brain that feels the suffering. When I can’t take the suffering, my mind knows how to do it. For me, it often starts out as an extreme form of distraction from the negative thoughts. I simply think of anything that is unemotional. I do things that are unemotional. I can get through a whole day and not actually remember what happened, I simply just get through it. Over the years, I have succeeded
in tuning out just about the whole world around me. Engage me in a conversation, and sooner or later you will pick up an odd mannerism: My eyes glaze over, I’m unresponsive. I am not present. Literally I am somewhere else. I can hear you speak but I simply cannot listen to the conversation. When the pain becomes too much, I admit to myself that I am suffering, know that it will end, I just push it to the side and sometimes when I do this, I’m alive and I know I’m alive but it doesn’t feel the same as being alive. (That makes per fect sense in my head!!) It’s like looking at everything from far away or through a fog. It’s not what I would call pleasant but it is an escape from the pain - momentarily, anyway. Of course, the pain is just waiting for me once I emerge from the fog. Nevertheless, while dissociation is temporary it can prevent me from taking more per manent steps to end my suffering. Because, after all, when I wake up the next day, I likely won’t feel as wor n out and dragged down. And when I’m back to that state - not in as much pain as before - I appreciate not having taken more permanent action or decisions. I’m not saying it’s right for everyone and certainly too much of it or it being uncontrolled can be bad, I’m just saying it works for me. Have you ever experienced disassociation? IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK JUST DON’T STAY THERE FOR LONG!
DIONE LOCKYER YOU will see so many ‘gurus’ telling you that you should be happy all day ever y day. As a therapist that is known as the REAL, RAW AND HONEST MINDSET MENTOR, there are quite a few choice words I could use, but as this is a respectable newspaper I’ll just say... what a crock of cr*p! There will be days when getting out of bed feels like a mission, when the last thing you want to do is smile. Worry takes over, you feel just... mergh and there’s nothing anyone can say or do to change that. When this happens, do not and I repeat DO NOT put further pressure on yourself! Allow yourself to feel however you want. If you want to cry for absolutely no reason, cry! If you want to scream at the
DAILY CHALLENGES: Take one small step every day. top of your voice to release then scream. If you want to sit in front of the TV and watch rom coms all day, DO IT! It is more than ok to have those off days. Those off days
are the days that actually help us grow. They actually teach us what we don’t want in life, they actually teach us that in order to feel better, we have to think differently.
They show us who and what we want to be or do. They teach us that bad days are not the end of the world as long as we don’t stay there for too long. As a woman who suffered with depression, those off days were frequent. I would wallow around in self-pity for weeks on end, questioning who I was, what I was supposed to be doing, who I was meant to be. The more pressure I put on myself for feeling low, the lower it made me feel, the more depressed I became. It was a vicious circle! When I started studying Anxiety Management and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, I taught myself to release the pressure. If I had a day where I felt low or depressed but still got through that day that was something to celebrate right? I’d managed to
get through the day and to me that was all that mattered. I decided to give myself small, daily challenges to help me overcome the depressed state I was in, they were as follows: I got through today therefore; my challenge for tomorrow is to smile at least once. When i succeeded, it encouraged me to do more... I managed to smile twice today therefore, tomorrow my challenge is I’m going to do my hair and make-up to make myself feel better. Again, it was achieved. One small step every day has tur ned me into the proud, confident and positive Therapist that I am today. Is your glass half full or half empty? ROBERT SHALLIS IS your glass half full or half empty? Many of us have heard this common expression or even used it occasionally. It’s simply a measure of your outlook on life and situations. It determines whether you see things in a positive (half full) or negative (half empty) way, optimistically or pessimistically. So why is it that so many people find it easier to see things in a less positive way? How many times do we hear people say things such as ‘I knew it was going to rain today,’ ‘I had a feeling that my flight was going to be delayed’ And so on. Somebody once said to me. ‘I’m not a pessimist, I’m a realist. If I expect the worst and it doesn’t happen, then that’s a bonus.
HALF EMPTY: Why is it easier to see things in a less positive way? ‘What a way to live each day when there really is no justified reason in doing so. Can you imagine a sportsman adopting such an attitude? What are the real chances of winning at anything with such a mindset? Psychologists tell us that we have around 60-80,000 thoughts a day and 70-80 per cent of those are negative ones. This is a habitual way of being because we live in a negative culture,
marinating ourselves daily with news and media that create anxiety, fear, worry and drama. We simply allow events and people to determine how we feel. We buy in to the drama all too easily, which in most cases is negative. So, it’s easy to see the influences behind the ‘glass half empty’ approach to life. It’s our choice. We can continue to be influenced in a negative way or be influential to oth-
ers in a positive way. The way to begin this, is to take note of yourself, become more aware of your thinking around certain situations. Change that little voice inside your head that tells you ‘no, I can’t’ to ‘yes, I can.’ Start to break those old habits and replace them with positive thoughts until they eventually become the new habitual way of thinking. It will take time and
effort at first but eventually you will start to notice a difference. It’s impossible to think negatively and live positively, it just doesn’t work. The thoughts we allow to occupy our mind can only be changed if we decide to make an effort to change them. So, make an effort, what do you have to lose? One thing I always try to do, is uplift others. Take focus away from yourself and encourage, compliment and instil some happiness and positivity in those around you. Everyone needs some reassurance and belief in themselves at times and by giving that to others, reflects back on how you feel which is a great feeling. It helps them and in turn helps you to start breaking the habit of being your old self. Be mindful that old habits can be difficult to break and new habits take time and effort to form. In a collaboration via Instagram, Brian May, Roger Taylor and Lambert recorded the classic anthem on mobile phones and laptops from their respective homes in London, Cornwall and Los Angeles. The new version is dedicated to ‘frontline warriors fighting coronavirus around the world,’ and has been retitled ‘You are the Champions.’
A post on Queen’s official Facebook page stated that ‘All funds and proceeds from the single will go to supporting the Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organisation (WHO) powered by the United Nations Foundation to support frontline health workers.’ In an interview with the BBC, May said they had changed a few words of the lyrics to show they had medical workers in their minds, “It means that we are all applauding you, because you are now the champions.
