PRIME MINISTER SANCHEZ has outlined the measures involved in Spain’s de-escalation phase, this entire process has been divided into four separate phases and will last at least a month and a half. This plan will be gradual and moving to the next phase is dependent on the progress of the coronavirus epidemic. To keep control of the virus’s rate of infection each phase lasts a minimum of two weeks, as this i s h o w l o n g i t t a k e s t o i n c u b a t e t h e c o ro n avirus. The de-escalation phases will be applied asymmetrically amongst autonomous communities, however they will all be coordinated by the same central government rules. We currently find ourselves in Phase 0, the preparation stage, which has included some relief measures such as the recent change allowing children out for walks. This will also allow some businesses that operate by appointment to begin to offer services from Monday, May 4, and for restaurants to serve food to take away, said Sánchez. Individual training and walks will be permitted from Saturday as the prime minister previously hinted. INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ DAY is celebrated across the world on May 1 and therefore is more commonly known as May Day. The event was first acknowledged in the 19th century, with the labour movements and trade union growing, several days were selected by the trade unionists as a day for celebrating labour. May 1 was chosen to be International Workers’ Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket

Phase 1 will allow small retail and trade establishments to reopen; terraces will also be allowed to open but at a limited capacity and always when respecting the new protocols. Individuals over the age of 65, the most vulnerable risk group, will be given a designated time to use these shops to ensure safety. Businesses taking advanced bookings can open as well as cultural establishments but with limited capacity and face masks will be strongly recommended when using public transport. Hotels and tourist accommodations will reopen, however all common spaces must be closed. Phase 2 is the intermediate transitional period in which restaurants can begin serving customers inside but at only under strict security measures. Cultural events can restart but with a limit of 40 people in attendance. Phase 3 is the final stage, although face masks will still be recommended, if all measures and coronavirus figures correlate effectively then general mobility across the country will be more flexible. Furthermore, maximum capacity at establishments will be increased to 50 per cent.

New normality THE plan for the transition to the new normality that the Prime Minister, Pedro Sรกnchez, has presented this Tuesday, contemplates a deescalation of confinement and an economic revival with a different pace in each province, depending on the health and epidemiological situation. Although the Executive has not set specific dates for each phase, it has advanced that the intention is to extend it at most until the end of June, just before the strong summer season begins. Although no specific dates have been set, there is an approximate calendar. The four phases of the transition to the new normal plan will run until the end of June. A minimum period of two weeks will pass between each phase, which will be extended if the markers indicate so. On May 4, all the territories will enter Phase 0 except the Balearics and Canaries, which will enter Phase 1.

Air fair price hike AIRLINES hiked up prices on flights between the Balearic Islands and the Spanish mainland by as much as 22 per cent after the national government approved increasing residents’ travel discount from 50 to 75 per cent. This was the conclusion reached by the CNMC National Markets and Competition Commission following a study carried out at the request of the Spanish and Balearic governments. The CNMC calculated that the rise in air fares was even higher for residents, at almost 40 per cent, while for non-residents the increase was 7 per cent. At the same time, from when

Family troubles A PALMA teenager got himself in trouble with the law for threatening his own father with a machete. Spanish press reported the 17-yearold had spent the night out, and when he went back home in the early morning told his parents he was going back out to sell his moped. The ensuing argument got so violent that the police were called out. When the patrol got to the property they found the parents and the son in the street. The officers asked the son to get the documentation for the bike, but then heard the father shouting for help. He told them his son had pushed and threatened him with the machete, leading to the youngster’s arrest for violence with the family.

Covid patient stopped from doing a runner POLICE stepped in to stop a coronavirus patient trying to do a runner from a health centre in Mallorca capital Palma. The man had tested positive for Covid-19, but was asymptomatic and wanted to go. He managed to escape outside, so National Police were called in. When officers got there they found staff remonstrating with the escapee outside to try and persuade him to go back indoors and to let them call an ambulance to take him to the city’s Son Espases hospital. He refused. But an officer went up behind him and prevented him from getting away. The ambulance was called and he was transferred to the hospital.

ARRESTED: The woman attacked another woman in the park with a frying pan. A 48-YEAR old woman is under arrest for bashing someone with a frying pan in a park in Mallorca capital Palma. A police patrol headed to the park in the Foners district of the city on Saturday afternoon after a member of the public called in a suspected assault on a woman. When officers arrived they found the victim slumped on a bench with blood on her face and head, and immediately called an ambulance. It later emerged she needed stitches for a cut to her forehead and had suffered a pos-

sible broken nose. The victim told police her aggressor had whacked her with the frying pan for no reason. Her version of events was reportedly backed up by a number of others who were around at the time, one saying she had seen the two women arguing the day before. Another witness claimed both women dossed in the park and that they had at another time seen the supposed aggressor with a knife in her hands, Spanish press said. The 48-year-old faces assault charges.

Lucky escape! THERE was a lucky escape for a young Mallorca driver when his car got caught in a raging torrent on a country lane in Pollensa following last week’s intense downpours. A local resident who realised what had happened managed to throw a rope to him so he could get himself out the vehicle to safety before it was

swept away. The young motorist was uninjured, but his wheels did not fare so well. The force of the swollen stream pushed the car for nearly a kilometre until it got wedged under a bridge. The incident occurred on the Cami de Can Roig close to the border with Alcudia when the young man was driving over the Font de

Malany stream. The car proved to be no match for the volume of water which had come up onto the road and fell into the stream itself. The northern area of Mallorca was particularly hammered by the rain last week, and Local Police blocked vehicle access to a number of rural lanes as streams overflowed up and out onto road level.

Much to Pedro’s surprise, a convoy of patrol cars with lights flashing and sirens parked up in front of his apartment, then officers got out and sang him happy birthday. The emotion of the moment all proved a little too much, and Pedro teared up. Officers also gifted him a police t-shirt and bracelet. “Your emotion fills us with pride. We wish you every happiness on the day of your birthday as on all the others, and we send you every strength to confront your illness,” the police tweeted to Pedro.

THE Balearic Island construction sector has called on public administrations to “get on with it” to help speed up the recovery from the coronavirus crisis. Balearic Constructors’ Association President Eduardo Lopez warned that rapid and effective action from the administrations is needed “to avoid the sector being completely paralysed in two or three months.” What’s needed now, according to the association president, is “efficiency” and “dedication,” and the allocation of “sufficient means to correct the inefficiency we are currently suffering.” Lopez particularly highlighted the issue of granting works licences and authorisations to occupy public spaces, and all the bureaucratic and administrative procedures which municipal councils, the islands’ administrations and the Balearic government must

POOPING in a Palma park and threatening police officers after he was caught got a lockdown breaker nicked. When police came across the 62year-old doing his business in the island capital’s Ses Estacions park, which was closed off to the public under State of Alarm regulations, he turned nasty and tried to hit one officer with a crutch. Also in Palma, police were called out to the Son Roca neighbourhood due to an altercation. According to reports a 59-year-old man had tried to wrench a grill off the window of the home of a family member who owed him money. The angry 59-year-old threatened some of the neighbours

RYANAIR: Told to reinstate workers. AIR carrier Ryanair has been ordered to reverse a series of redundancies by the High Court in Madrid. The company were told to reinstate 224 workers collectively dismissed from four bases in the country. The High Court said the reasons given by the airline for the closures were not good enough. Ryanair said it had instructed its solicitors to appeal the decision. The court said the budget airline must immediately reinstate the workers “in the same working conditions” and with “immediate payment of wages not received” since their contracts were terminated in January. Ryanair dismissed the employees, who worked at bases in Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, and at Girona on the mainland, after announcing it planned to close the four hubs due to delays in the delivery of grounded Boeing 737 MAX planes.

Son arrested

A WOMAN was found stabbed to death at her home in Madrid at the weekend and police have arrested her son in connection with her murder. SUMMA 112 mobile ICU arrived at the scene on Saturday April 25 just after 7pm, but were unable to save the victim, who

had been stabbed ‘at least five times.’ The Guardia Civil has arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly stabbing his mother, 60, to death in the town of Manzanares El Real, sources confirmed. A murder team is now trying to establish a motive for the death.

EASYJET STRUGGLES BUDGET airline easyJet is facing a warning that it could go bust, as flights to Spain remain grounded. As the budget carrier has no services to offer, the focus for easyJet has switched to a massive battle to oust the company’s chairman John Barton and chief executive Johan Lundgren. The shareholder move is being spearheaded by easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou over the company ordering a new fleet of aircraft from Airbus. The cost of the order is £4.5 billion, and Haji-Ioannou claims that it will bank-

rupt easyJet, especially with what’s happening over the coronavirus crisis. He’s the largest shareholder in the company and the showdown vote will take place at a meeting on May 22. Sir Stelios described the current easyJet bosses as “scoundrels.” Not surprisingly, the company wants shareholders to vote against his resolution, and they said that any changes would be damaging. John Barton said: “This is not in the best interests of the company or its shareholders as a whole.”

EX-FOOTBALL player and sports commentator Michael Robinson, who revolutionised the way of analysing football in Spain during the 1990s with his live broadcasts, died on Tuesday April 28 at his home in Marbella. Since being diagnosed with myeloma in the autumn of 2018, Michael Robinson wanted to make use of his own best therapy to fight the disease: his sense of humour. However, when giving his last interview in quarantine, his humour had disappeared: “I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but they have not given me hope,” he said

Returning home in the midst of a global pandemic has become an almost impossible mission which is fueling human trafficking networks. For example, at the end of March, a group of about 100 Moroccans embarked on two inflatable boats to return illegally to their country and bypass the restrictions decreed to stop the virus from spreading both in Spain and in Morocco. Each passenger paid around €5,400 for the trip, which ended on a beach in Larache, in northwestern Morocco. According to police sources, the price of a place on a boat from the Moroccan coast to Spain, that is, the opposite route, ranges between €400 and €1,000. An internal report of the European Commission illustrates the flexibility of the mafias: “Migrant smugglers show extreme flexibility and adaptability of their criminal businesses, and are now also organising irregular trips of Moroccan migrants fleeing from the Covid-19

Domestic Violence THE Minister of Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska assures that Spain has intensified prevention and protection actions for potential victims of domestic violence during lockdown. Since the beginning of the State of Alarm police forces have arrested 4,142 people accused of gender-based violence. Furthermore, calls concerning domestic violence to the emergency number, 061, have almost doubled in the month of April. “We have not lowered our intensity in the fight against gendered violence,” claimed Marlaska as he clarified that officers had already processed 153,730 cases of all kinds and arrested 4,142 individuals for domestic abuse. Marlaska has also highlighted the reinforcement and success of the Alertcops mobile application which allows victims to communicate and send alerts to the police when they are in danger.

In one of the latest examples, Catalan police found a snake wrapped round a moped in in the Sant Marti district of Barcelona. The officers had to call in Catalan government rural agents to deal with the unusual discovery for the Cata-

lan capital. “In the last few days we have seen rare images of animals in the city,” the Mossos d’Esquadra posted on Twitter alongside a photo of the serpent. Earlier this week residents of the village of Val de Lourenza in Galicia contacted the Guardia Civil to report they had spotted two wolves prowling around deserted streets near their houses.

Surprise find A SUPERMARKET shopper in Avila got a huge sur-

prise on Monday when they found an abandoned newborn baby in a trolley. The baby boy, which is no more than a couple of days old, had been wrapped up in a sheet and placed inside a shopping bag, then left in a trolley in the supermarket car-park. A woman overheard the little one’s cries and

alerted the staff, who in turn called the emergency services. The baby has now been checked out by paediatricians at a local hospital and National Police posted on Twitter that the baby is in good health. Also, that they have opened an investigation to get to the bottom of the matter.

Two week review AFTER having a surprisingly successful week post-Easter break, it flipped and flopped between poll position and back of the pack this week. Against top tier major currencies sterling really flagged, with an average loss of 0.5%. However, compared with a month ago, the pound is still an average of 3.4% firmer. PM Boris Johnson left hospital and retreated to Chequers, his country residence, to fully recover. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab is still de facto leader, and announced a three week extension to the lockdown. The Office for Budgetary Responsibility (OBR) sees the UK economy shrinking by 13% in 2020, and a persistent shortage of PPE for hospital and care staff either was or was not exacerbated by political distancing from the EU, with supplies from elsewhere having appeared disorganised. Another setback for sterling came in the form of Brexit, with the Foreign Office insisted that December 31 remains the deadline for ending the Brexit transition period, trade deal or no deal.

A slightly below-average per formance by the euro left it 0.2% below the other major currencies and flat against the Swiss franc. The euro strengthened by a third of a cent against sterling. The focus has been on the European Council and what collective financial recovery package could be agreed on Thursday’s meeting. The Canadian economic data all related to March or earlier, so failed to reflect the full impact of the global shutdown. Wholesale sales for February rose 0.7% for a third monthly gain. Retail sales for the same month were only affected to a “negligible” extent by the pandemic, increasing by a monthly 0.3%. Inflation slowed markedly from 2.2% to 0.9%, driven by lower energy prices. The new housing price index was up by 0.9% in the year to March and was apparently unaffected by Covid-19.

Ineligible for loan

THE Frasers Group, whose owner Mike Ashley set up JD Sports and owns House of Fraser, Evans Cycles and Jack Wills has been refused a coronavirus loan by the British gov­ ernment. It told shareholders only that it was ineligible but declined to explain why, although it also advised that it has settled a €674 million dispute with the Belgian tax authority appar­ ently making a modest payment on­ ly. Mr Ashley is a controversial figure who also owns Newcastle United Football Club which he is reportedly trying to sell.

This means that, if the lockdown is extended into May or even until June, you will have 60 days from the end of the period to renew your driving licence. This comes as part of a relief package passed by the government that includes extension for vehicle inspections, visas for for­ eigners, mortgage extensions and foreclosures, rental contracts, and many other administrative deadlines. Even so, it is wise to check on these measures regularly because they are modified from time to time.

Zoe Parsons AS a strong, business owner, how have you got through the health crisis? “As a Counsellor who helps people who have experienced narcissist or domestic abuse, unfortunately, the need for my services has increased. Therefore, I have made myself more available to help people, and provide resources where they can go to get help.” When isolation is over what do you plan to do? “As a survivor of domestic violence, I know how important it is to not feel alone when you have experienced abuse, so I will continue to provide that safe emotional place for anyone who needs it.”

“PERHAPS it’s fortunate that I have an inbuilt preservation reserve, having spent three years in a hospital cot and learning to walk again aged seven,” muses PAWS-PATAS animal charity PR and fundraising coordinator Chrissie Cremore on why she’s doing alright under the health crisis restrictions. “Keep positive with a sense of humour,” is Chrissie’s lockdown survival tip.

HOLLIE NEWELL moved to Turre when she was just 18 and qualified as a Zumba teacher a year later. Hollie, who has a dance and fitness background, points out that “our bodies aren’t on lockdown, so we can still keep ourselves fit during quarantine. “It’s hard not having a normal everyday routine,” Hollie admits, “but some way we have to make the most of it. “Always try to find the positive in every-

thing.” Thanks to social media Hollie is able to share her love of movement and exercise with others. “I have been recording Zumba videos for people to work out at home whenever they like: no obligations, nice, casual and fun. “The aim is to keep the body and mind working while we are not allowed out.”

been making new creations with the limited fresh produce I can find.” What are you looking forward to after the lockdown is lifted? “When I get out of lockdown I want to make a meal for my friends with all the new recipes I have tried and am looking forward to seeing the school kids.”

MARIA WILSON is a passionate fundraiser for local cancer charities through her group Maria and the Pink Ladies. As a cancer survivor herself, Maria has been in the vanguard to get people to take up early cancer screening tests, which is also promoted through her involvement in the AACC charity based in Playa Flamenca. Maria says on Facebook: “One thing this whole Covid-19 situation has taught me is that we have one life to live. This is not a practice run for the future, this is it! The material things we invest in, are left behind only to be discarded.” She added that she’s enjoying spending more time with her husband Carl, as their busy commitments meant that going on holiday was the best way to fully concentrate on each other.

IN a battle to save his presidency this November, Trump is busy scapegoating the World Health Organisation to mask his own deadly inaction in the USA. Similarly, in an attempt to perk up the flagging economy, he’s accused by US governors of making “delusional” and “dangerous” statements to roll-back safe, stay-at-home restrictions without a robust and widespread system of testing in place. How to make an election drama out of a crisis: Trump has never met a crisis he couldn’t turn into a campaign opportunity. His thin skin, his constant personal attacks, his ability to drive divisions between people and promote infighting to deflect criticism from himself, his willingness to blame others for his failures, but to take credit for their achievements... are all typical exam-

ples of Trumpism. His playground tactic of redirecting accusations of misconduct back at his accuser is especially childish, petty… and surprisingly effective. You’d think pseudo-reality shows such as ‘The Apprentice’ were unscripted, but I’m beginning to wonder. Given The Donald’s less than masterly way with words, how could he ever have got the job? A CAFFEINE DREAM DEAR Euro Weekly, Thanks for keeping me going. I can’t wait to get back outside, I am genuinely missing random human contact. Before the lockdown I would be moaning about too many people in the street, the Spaniards congregating in the middle of small pavements for a family chat, nobody covering the tills on Mercadona when it’s busy, you know the regular moany old man stuff. OUR VIEW Wild love FEW are lucky enough to go into the wild these days. Under lockdown, our horizons have shrunk. Beloved nature reserves and glorious national parks must wait until the quarantine is lifted. Yet it seems the wild is coming to us. In Barcelona, a snake is wrapped around a parked motorbike engine. In Puerto Banus, dolphins swim among the boats in the port. In Alhaurin, even wolves have been spotted and large jellyfish float through Venice’s now clear canals. Animals are moving into the spaces that humans have vacated, and we are unusually receptive to their arrival. When days seem so indistinct, the appearance of a new bird outside the window suddenly seizes our attention. Birdsong is clearer now that the traffic has hushed. With quieter roads, the death toll of furry creatures is guaranteed to fall. Grass verges, left uncut, will provide a home for wildflowers and a breeding ground for bugs and insects. Heavy machinery is parked up, leaving nests undisturbed. Animal appearances seem to bring such joy to human hearts that some tales of returning wildlife have been exaggerated or confected. However, much work to protect wildlife has slowed or stopped due to social distancing measures, and the dog shelters and horse sanctuaries, often strapped for cash, are under increased pressure. In developing countries, the absence of tourism and monitoring groups may give free rein to poachers who will see no more need to obey quarantine rules. People already living close to the edge may be forced to exploit nature to survive as their work disappears. When the pandemic is finally over, wildlife may vanish as fast as it emerged, we may not really notice so we should enjoy it while we can.

I’ve never responded to any article in any media even though I’ve become increasingly infuriated by the sensationalism, fake news, hysteria, and unbalanced minority driven reporting by so many mainstream journalists in the last three years. But the above article did it for me, so I’m addressing my concerns to yourself as one of the only sane voices in an increasingly insane media, maybe you could spread some sanity. When we embed the media in a military conflict it places risk and burden on the units and soldiers involved, but it’s justified as it’s essential for the public to know what is happening on the front line and for the military to know the public understands their role and hardship. Covid-19 is a war and no different, when we emerge from the far side of this crisis the authorities and the public will be desperate to analyse and learn from every aspect of what happened. The health service will be desperate to show the world the warlike conditions they worked under, the hardships they faced, and the superhuman effort it took from everyone to manage an impossible situation and save lives. It’s not a case of one size fits all MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man BECAUSE of the situation at the moment I don’t switch my phone off at night as I have children and grandchildren in the UK and, in case of emergencies, they can get hold of me 24/7. What I don’t have it on for is so Vodafone send me messages at 4am in the morning on a regular basis. Surely a communications company this size can work out that I’m not going to be interested in getting a free phone, unlimited roaming, which, at the moment is as useful as a chocolate teapot or, in fact, any offers at that hour of the day! There are so many rules at the moment and I appreciate that the government is doing its best, but unfortunately it’s not a case of one size fits all. I wonder why in the UK you can do some exercise, but here you can’t? It would make such a difference if you could get out for 30 minutes and just stretch your legs. It seems a little strange that if you don’t have a dog or a young

child you can’t go out except to do essential shopping. I happen to live up in the hills and am able to walk my dog once a day. Mrs S does the other walk. When I’m out I see maybe one other person walking their dog. But to be honest I don’t understand that they aren’t taking into consideration that everyone needs to exercise, not just dogs and children. Is it just me or do you all feel that we have stepped out of reality and into another dimension? I feel like we are all now starring in a sci-fi movie. You know the one - the disaster movie that always starts with an expert or scientist being ignored by the government with some ulterior motive usually motivated by power or money or both. So what did I do to just give myself a boost? I decided to watch a movie and my choice was, wait for it, a 2011 film called Contagion which is about a pandemic that starts in Asia. The reason I watched it is I remember watching it when it came out and thinking it was all a bit far-fetched but after watching it again I couldn’t believe that if shown now it would be a documentary and not sci-fi. So now I’m going to watch Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman just to cheer myself up again.

Intrusive thoughts and mental health: MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED

INTRUSIVE thoughts are thoughts that pop in to your head which are beyond your control and can become obsessive. They are thoughts that you do not want, and obsessions that you certainly would rather not have! It is something I have learned to deal with over the years, it can be anything from an unwanted image or a scenario that plays in your mind that can cause so much upset and can be very hard to manage or eliminate. The hardest one I feel like I have had to deal with to date is ‘losing the closest person to me,’ it’s a thought that creeps in, can be very graphic and very upsetting. It can pop up out of nowhere. I haven’t found a way to get rid intrusive thoughts, however there are ways I have been shown through therapy to cope with the unwanted thoughts: 1) You need to recognise if the thought is truly intrusive. Are you obsessing over something you don’t want to? Is the thought popping up at times when it

doesn’t make any sense? Is it upsetting you? 2) Acknowledge these thoughts when they happen. Tell yourself it is your mind producing these thoughts and try to distract yourself. 3) Take a deep breath. If you practise meditation, this a brilliant time to take 10 minutes out to practise it. Give yourself time. 4) Don’t judge your thoughts. Understand that these thoughts are part of your illness, so there isn’t any need to feel guilty, they aren’t wanted thoughts! 5) Try and replace the thought. This is the tricky part, try and think of a ‘happy’ or ‘positive’ thought. It’s easier said than done! But remember that these thoughts are created in your mind, they are not truly what you think or are not truly a part of you. Intrusive thoughts can happen to everyone. It’s how you cope with them that defines how much they’ll rule your life. In the end, it’s absolutely crucial that you work with a professional to find out how to help you cope with intrusive thoughts if you are finding it is having a negative affect on your day to day life. GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY I REMEMBER a time when social media was a bit of fun. Even if I was taking a few days in the country, away from it all, Facebook still made me feel good. Looking at others posting their smiling photos, made me smile. It wasn’t so long ago, that people posted happy photos of them lunching with friends at beach clubs, or dancing at glamorous events. These days, my feed is filled with angry posts from people who are clearly struggling with being trapped at home. People I had assumed were light-hearted, and above resorting to online arguments over who claims to know more about Covid-19, politics, or religion. It’s as if suddenly, everyone is an expert on all things Chinese, having sourced their knowledge on Wikipedia. I drew the line and ended the call, when one FaceTime caller told me that my beloved Jack Russell, Henry, would be seen as a canapé in China. It’s as if ‘wine-o’clock’ starts earlier each day, and the rants too. Normal people, shouting at their phones, in an argument with themselves, as nobody really cares about what you’re saying. At numerous points during the week, I was almost ready to hit delete profile, just to escape. On the subject of escape, I stare at my diary, filled with endless cancelled plans. Cannes Film Festival - No. Monaco Grand Prix - No. Royal Ascot - No. The list of my usual summer, goes on, and each event has a red line through

BASE CAMP: Today my bed is my world. it. Over the years, these dates have given some structure, to a season otherwise filled with little more than the beach. Luckily, my house is right on the beach, so I won’t have far to go this year. Summer 2020 will be a very localised situation. As the week rolled on, I found myself setting up base camp from my bed. It’s as if everything I need is now located by my bed. If I’m downstairs and can’t find my, phone, glasses, diary, lighter, dog... chances are they’re at, or in my bed. I had to conduct a conference call on Thursday afternoon, and of course as the stressful work call went on, I found myself saying things like “I won’t leave my desk until we find a solution.” Leave my desk? I hadn’t even got any trousers on. I was in bed! I now rise early, swim, work out, make coffee and it’s back to bed. Some days, when I feel like it, I even take lunch in bed. I binge watch Netflix in bed. I write newspaper articles in bed. Bed is now Caput Mundi, and just like Marco Anneo Lucano who claimed it to be Rome in 61AD, for me, bed is now my great empire, from which I oversee work, banking, dining, and the greatest lockdown past time of all, sleep. Over the coming days, before getting into a heated row on Facebook, with people who don’t deserve your time, stop. Ask yourself, is there something else I could be doing? Read a book, tend to the garden, clean your pool. Anything is better than bad energy. Stay safe / stay sane x

Touching letter HOLLYWOOD star and allround good guy Tom Hanks has sent a touching letter and a very meaningful gift to a young Australian lad, who wrote to tell him he was being bullied because of his name - Corona. Eight-year-old Gold Coast schoolboy Corona De Vries penned a letter to the actor after he and his wife Rita Wilson both went down with Covid-19 while in Queensland and spent several weeks recovering in hospital. Corona asked if the couple were OK and told the Oscar winner he liked his name, but that kids at his school were calling him “coronavirus” and it made him feel “sad and angry.” Hanks replied with a letter beginning “Dear Friend Corona” and words of en-

couragement he bashed out on a typewriter. “Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful! Thank you for being such a good friend friends make friends feel good when they are down,” he told him. “You know, you are the only person I’ve ever known to have the name Corona - like the ring around the sun, a crown,” he added. “You’ve got a friend in me!” Hanks hand wrote at the end in a reference to his role as Woody in the Toy Story films. The star also sent the lad a Corona-branded typewriter he had used during his quarantine in Australia, saying: “I thought this typewriter would suit you. “Ask a grown-up how it works. And use it to write me back.”
