PR IME M I NI S T ER SANCHEZ has outlined the measures involved in Spain’s de-escalation phase, this entire process has been divided into four separate phases and will last at least a month and a half. This plan will be gradual and moving to the next phase is dependent on t h e p ro g re s s o f t h e coronavirus epidemic. To keep control of the
virus’s rate of infection each phase lasts a minimum of two weeks, as this is how long it takes to incubate the coronavirus. The de-escalation phases will be applied asymmetrically amongst autonomous communities, however they will all be coordinated by the same central gover nment rules. We c u r re n t l y f i n d ourselves in Phase 0, the preparation stage, which has included some relief measures such as the recent change allowing children out for walks. This will also allow some businesses that operate by appointment to begin to offer services from Monday, May 4, and for restaurants to serve food to take away, said Sánchez. Individual training and walks will be permitted from Saturday as the prime minister previously hinted.

small retail and trade establishments to reopen; terraces will also be allowed to open but at a limited capacity and always when respecting the new protocols. Individuals over the age of 65, the most vulnerable risk group, will be given a designated time to use these shops to ensure safety. Businesses taking advanced bookings can open as well as cultural establishments but with limited capacity and face masks will be strongly recommended when using public transport. Hotels and tourist accommodations will reopen,
however all common spaces must be closed. Phase 2 is the intermediate transitional period in which restaurants can begin serving customers inside but at only under strict security measures. Cultural events can restart but with a limit of 40 people in attendance. Phase 3 is the final stage, although face masks will still be recommended, if all measures and coronavirus figures correlate effectively then general mobility across the country will be more flexible. Further more, maximum capacity at establishments will be increased to 50 per cent.

UP THE WORKERS! Touching act of solidarity
WORKERS’ DAY: Now a public holiday on May 1. INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ DAY is celebrated across the world on May 1 and therefore is more commonly known as May Day. The event was first acknowledged in the 19th century, with the labour movements and trade union growing, several days were selected by the trade unionists as a day for celebrating labour.
May 1 was chosen to be International Workers’ Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago when there was a general strike for the eight-hour workday. The strike turned into riots that led to the deaths of workers and policemen and the execution of four labour leaders. In the past, the symbolic day was marked by protests and demonstrations across
the countries that still had unfair laws regarding workers’ rights. However, today it is a national holiday which celebrates the social and economic achievements of workers all across the world. In Spain, it is known as Día del Trabajador or Primero de Mayo. The holiday had actually been banned by the Franco regime in 1937 and was not re-introduced as a public holiday until 1978.

A NINE-YEAR old lad in Almeria had put coronavirus patients before himself in a lovely example of how the health crisis can bring out the very best in people. Young Manu has donated his tablet to the provincial capital’s Torrecardenas hospital so that people being treated there for the virus can be in touch with their families, which he has presented to staff along with a very sweet letter. He writes about how it was ‘a dream come true’ to be allowed out for the first time on Sunday after 42 days of lockdown confinement in his home to get some fresh air and

GENEROUS GESTURE: Almeria City mayor said the donation makes health workers’ jobs “easier and more effective.” THE millionaire Saudi boss of the top football club in Almeria has donated vital equipment to the region’s principal hospitals. Turki Al-Sheikh put €1.2 million into the UD Almeria Foundation to be used for helping the province fight coronavirus. The mobile X-ray machine for the Torrecardenas in Almeria City and the monitors for the Poniente in El Ejido and the La Inmaculada in Huercal-Overa are part of this initiative.
Almeria mayor Ramon FernandezPacheco described the donation as an “enormous gesture of generosity,” and said it provided health workers with the latest equipment which is “going to make their work easier and more effective.” Junta de Andalucia government delegate Maribel Sanchez underlined the solidarity of the football club with the province and said the donation “gives oxygen to Almeria’s health service.”

THREE people smugglers are in an Almeria prison after a small boat with 35 illegal North African immigrants on board was rescued just off the provincial coast. The just eight-metre long and two-metre wide craft had set off from a Moroccan beach to try and reach Spain, but was intercepted six nautical miles to the east of Cabo de Gata. Investigations into which of the group had been skippering the craft began once the immigrants were safely on dry land and had received the necessary assistance, leading to the identification of the trio. Police said one, 28-year-old Moroccan national KZ, had acted as the contact with the organisation behind the people smuggling operation.

The third detainee, a 45year-old of Algerian origin, shared steering duties with the 34-year-old and had responsibility for the GPS and compass. According to police each of the immigrants paid some €3,500 for their passage to Spain. The three arrested men have been charged with a crime against the rights of foreign citizens and are being held behind bars awaiting trial.
Multi-million economy reboot plan THE Almeria government has unveiled a €111 million plan to reboot the coronavirus crisis-hit provincial economy. ‘Plan Almeria’ features six investment programmes aimed at the province’s 103 municipalities and new measures for the start of lockdown de-escalation, which will remain in place to deal with the Covid-19 situation. Diputacion de Almeria President Javier A Garcia promised “the whole province will benefit” from what he explained is a major management strategy and reorganisation of the 2020 budget based on the concerns of the provincial mayors, social entities and trade unions. A large chunk of the money will go toward supporting the self-employed, both directly and via local authorities, to stepping up investment in towns and villages, and to reestablishing the activity of the construction industry and associated businesses. Also to financing the municipal expenses stemming from dealing with the coronavirus pandemic and to supporting the most vulnerable households. “There will be significant investment in promoting Almeria’s tourism, trade, culture, cinema and products,” the Diputacion president said. “This government team has worked on a very complex and necessary planning to adapt the 2020 budget to the current needs.”

Champion wins a long fight STAFF working on the frontline of the war against coronavirus at Huercal-Overa hospital had a good reason to celebrate as one of their patients was finally well enough to leave the intensive care unit after a two-week battle to survive. The Macael butcher was moved into the ICU after developing complications. Sharing the video on social media of their local resident making his triumphant departure from the unit, Macael council described him as a “champion.”
Wildfire rips through 10 hectares

A WILDFIRE ripped through 10 hectares of hilly countryside in Cuevas del Almanzora. Firefighters from the Turre and Albox stations, assisted by a transport and extinction helicopter and a Ministry of Agriculture Kamov helicopter with a 4,500-litre capacity, battled the blaze until the early hours of the morning after it broke out at round 2.30pm last Thursday in the Olla area of the municipality. Strong gusts of wind hampered efforts to douse the flames. After some six hours the teams had stablised the wildfire, but it wasn’t until around 2.30am on Friday that it was fully extinguished, the Andalucia Plan Infoca firefighting service reported on social media.
Lockdown de-escalation guide IN anticipation of a de-escalation of the lockdown restrictions in the not too distant future the Almeria provincial government has prepared guidelines for councils, consortiums and local authority associations to make sure they are fully prepared for the easing of the restrictions. The Digital Guide on Covid-19 Preventative Management is aimed at ensuring all the guarantees and measures are in place in accordance with World Health Organisation recommendations to prevent the spread of coronavirus among public sector workers.

“The information is essential to be able to implement organisational, hygiene and technical measures,” he said. “We want to guarantee that all personnel have up-to-date information and training to prevent contagion from the first day the de-confinement starts.” The guide covers matters like protecting staff, dealing with contacts, specific orientations for essential workers, and possible psychosocial issues stemming from the health crisis. Thief posing as plain-clothes cop cuffed A THIEF who posed as a plainclothes cop to fool his victims in Almeria is under arrest. The case dates back to November last year. A couple reported that a man had come
up to them in their car. He told them he was a non-uniformed p o l i c e o f f i c e r a n d o rd e r e d them to hand over a mobile phone. At this point he revealed he
was carrying a knife and made off on a moped with the phone. Now five months later the real police have identified and detained the robber.
Vera opens beaches to kids VERA has opened up its beaches for children to walk and play, the first municipality in the Levante region of Almeria Province to do so. Posting on Facebook, the council stressed that the rules set out by the Spanish government must be followed at all times. A maximum of three children up to the age of 14 are
now allowed out for an hour a day between 9am and 9pm accompanied by an adult they share a home with to get fresh air and exercise, going no further than a kilometre from their homes and practising social distancing. The local authority reminded residents that only families living within a kilometre of the coast are able to go to the beaches and that bathing in the sea is prohibited.

Turtle in safe hands
EXOTIC: An increase in sightings. AN exotic, invasive species of turtle is in safe hands after a resident of Balerma spotted the creature wandering down one of the town’s streets. Guardia Civil handed over the semi-aquatic Florida Galapagos turtle to the Arco amphibian and reptile conservation centre in Taberno. The Guardia said the species is catalogued in Spain as representing a serious threat to native species. The Guardia also reported an increase in sightings of both native and exotic species of animals in urban areas since the State of Alarm came into force due to the lack of human presence, and reminded the public to call 062 to deal with any incidents.
Fake goods seized GUARDIA CIVIL have discovered some 52,000 items of fake goods with a market value of more than €4.5 million at Almeria port. The haul, the biggest of its kind at the port, was the result of a threemonth investigation in collaboration with the Tax Agency customs officers. The Guardia said they located the fake items in inspections of containers mixed up with legal merchandise to make it more difficult for them to be detected.

Funky kids’ face masks CHILDREN in Vera are getting funky face masks to encourage them to do their bit to help stop the spread of the coronavirus now they are allowed out for fresh air and exercise for an hour a day. The local council is this week, with the help of the municipality’s Civil Protection, going house-to-house giving out 2,000 hygienic masks for juniors made by a group of local volunteers in materials bound to appeal to young tastes. The masks have been individually packaged following a heat treatment and disinfection, and come in sizes for two age ranges: three to seven years and eight to 11. Each mask can be used for a week, following hygiene rules on washing with soap and applying the steam of an iron,

Underground cockfight stopped GUARDIA CIVIL stepped in and stopped an underground cockfight from going ahead in Adra. A passing patrol in the Puente del Rio district of the town which went to check out why there was a gathering of people and vehicles on a plot of ground despite the lockdown restrictions discovered the illegal fight was about to get underway. The group had set up a large paddling pool and covered the floor with artificial grass. Officers found seven cockerels in cages and artificial spurs aimed at wounding the opponent bird. They also came across veterinary materials, including medications with no prescription, and 27 flower pots of marihuana. Several of the group tried to make off

Summer events off SUMMER events are off in Adra, the local council has announced. All the events lined up for between now and September which would attract large gatherings have been cancelled due to the risk of coronavirus contagion. This means the theatre festival, local fiestas, concerts, shows and events at the cultural centre are not happening. The decision was a unanimous one, agreed at an extraordinary videoconference meeting on Monday of the spokespersons of all the political groups represented on the administration and presided over by Adra mayor Manuel Cortes. The council stressed protecting public health was the priority and the move was based on
health authority recommendations. At the same time, the authority made the point that the decision would be revised and modified in accordance with national government indications and the phases of the eventual lockdown restrictions de-escalation, to which the municipality will have to adapt. One event which is still not definitively cancelled is the Juergas Rock Festival 2020, programmed for August 6, 7 and 8. The council said both it and the company organising the event were working on the assumption it will not be going ahead, but they are waiting on “clear and definitive instructions” from the Spanish government about the restrictions which will be established in coming weeks.

Terrorist fighter arrested ONE of Europe’s most wanted Daesh foreign terrorist fighters has been arrested in Costa Almeria. The Egyptian national, who spent several years in the SyrianIraqi conflict zone, had entered Spain illegally and was hiding out in a rented apartment in Almeria’s provincial capital. A police specialist anti-terrorism investigation, in collaboration with the Central Intelligence Agency and with international cooperation, had been working on the possibility that the Egyptian was planning to sneak into Europe via Spain. Investigators tracked his entry to the Almeria coast from North Africa and his subsequent movements, leading to the raid on the Almeria City flat and his detention. Two other individuals living in the same property have also been arrested. Police said they are working on identifying the pair and verifying their relationship with foreign terrorist fighters, or FTFs. It is not clear yet whether they too are combatants returning from

SIEZED: Police found marihuana, large amounts of cash and guns. FIVE members of the same family are under arrest for drug trafficking. Police detained the Vicar-based clan members following nearly two months of investigations, focused to begin with on an individual with a criminal record for drug-related crimes. Surveillance operations confirmed police suspicions he was part of an organised set-up dedicated to growing and selling marihuana. Police identified a property in Vicar on which air-conditioning units were running 24-hours a day. The original suspect, along with two others, was seen coming and going and always taking extreme security
measures. Two raids led to three arrests. In the home of the couple police said were the clan leaders, they seized more than €7,000 in cash and three guns. In the other raid officers found nearly 500 marihuana plants. Information gleaned from the first phase of the operation put investigators on to another property being used as an indoor cannabis plantation in El Ejido and a fourth detention for crimes against public health and power supply fraud. Police caught up with and arrested the individual they identified as the clan boss’s right-hand man a month later.

Chloe’s new heart
HOME WITH FAMILY: Chloe, 22 months old, has had a successful heart transplant during pandemic. A TODDLER returned home with a healthy new heart last week. Chloe, 22 months old, was admitted to the Gregorio Marañón Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on December 9, before coronavirus had consumed hospital resources, and now, months later she is back with her family in the town of Pinto.
Chloe’s heart transplant is one of 65 organ transplants performed in hospitals in the Community of Madrid since the State of Alarm was declared. From a ward at the Gregorio Marañón ICU, where Chloe has been since December, her mother told El Mundo she had seen first hand how
the coronavirus evolved ‘practically overnight.’ Aside from complications from the transplant itself, she admitted she feared the virus ‘very much’ adding: “We’ve been through a lot of fear. When the new heart arrived from Barcelona, they tested it... otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible.”

Ryanair Rapped AIR carrier Ryanair has been ordered to reverse a series of redundancies by the High Court in Madrid. The company were told to reinstate 224 workers collectively dismissed from four bases in the country. The High Court said the reasons given by the airline for the closures were
not good enough. Ryanair said it had instructed its solicitors to appeal the decision. The court said the budget airline must immediately reinstate the workers “in the same working conditions” and with “immediate payment of wages not received” since their contracts were terminated
in January. Ryanair dismissed the employees, who worked at bases in Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, and at Girona on the mainland, after announcing it planned to close the four hubs due to delays in the delivery of grounded Boeing 737 MAX planes.

The baby boy, which is no more than a couple of days old, had been wrapped up in a sheet and placed inside a shopping bag, then left in a trolley in the supermarket car-park. Inhuman Wolves spotted conditions IMPACT OF LOCKDOWN: Wolves are venturing into more urban areas as ‘there are less humans to flee from.’
WHILE the nation is confined to their homes since State of Alarm was declared, wild animals are making the most of the freedom as one resident found out when she saw two wolves strolling down
the street of a village in Galicia. According to La Voz de Galicia, these animals usually roam the area between the municipalities of Trabada, Barreiros and Ribadeo, as well as Lourenza.
The resident who photographed the two wolves contacted the Guardia Civil, which together with other authorities, will try to locate them. They have reminded the public that these are
A DAD, who dumped his young son on the hard shoulder, has been arrested after weeks of trying to locate him. The man was driving along the A-44 in Granada on March 19 when he came across a routine State of Alarm police check. But rather than stopping, he sped off in a ‘reckless and dangerous manner,’ forcing a traffic officer to move out of the way to avoid being run over. Police jumped into a patrol car and chased the suspect, who reportedly stopped briefly on the hard shoulder to let a child out, and made off at ‘a crazy speed.’ This bought him a little

POLICE have freed 20 people living in disgusting conditions in a Madrid restaurant. Among the group officers found camping out at the premises in the San Blas district of the city were two babies less than a year old. When officers went in they found Spaniards, Bangladeshis, Colombians, Filipinos, Peruvians, Portuguese, Venezuelans and Hondurans living in tiny areas not fit for human habitation. There were mattresses on the bar, under the kitchen extractor fan and on the back terrace. Each living space was separated by cardboard or plastic. The business owner was trying to make up for being forced to close by making a buck out of people with few financial resources. The victims were made to pay some €400 a
month for an area no more than a metre and half long. If they couldn’t come up with the money they were denied access to basic services and made to sleep in even smaller spaces, like the toilet or a freezer chamber. There were even threats to infect them with coronavirus, police said. The owner claimed he was a Covid-19 carrier and coughed and sneezed over the plates and other items if he found them eating. Both the restaurant boss and the owner of the property, who police said was aware of what was going on, are under arrest. They face charges for abetting irregular immigration, coercion and crimes against public health. Police also said the investigation remains open and have not ruled out there being others involved.

Returning home in the midst of a global pandemic has become an almost impossible mission which is fueling human trafficking networks. For example, at the end of March, a group of about 100 Moroccans embarked on two inflatable boats to return illegally to their country and bypass the restrictions decreed to stop the virus from spreading both in Spain and in Morocco. Each passenger paid around €5,400 for the trip, which ended on a beach in Larache, in northwestern Morocco. According to police sources, the price of a place on a boat from the Moroccan coast to Spain, that is, the opposite route, ranges between €400 and €1,000. An internal report of the European Commission illustrates the flexibility of the mafias: “Migrant smugglers show extreme flexibility and adaptability of their criminal businesses, and are now also organising irregular trips of Moroc-

Snake wrapped round moped WHILE Spain’s coronavirus crisis lockdown has kept people indoors and traffic off the roads, wildlife has been venturing out of its usual habitat and into the country’s towns and cities. In one of the latest examples, Catalan police found a snake wrapped round a moped in in the Sant Marti district of Barcelona. The officers had to call in Catalan government rural agents to deal with the un-
usual discovery for the Catalan capital. “In the last few days we have seen rare images of animals in the city,” the Mossos d’Esquadra posted on Twitter alongside a photo of the serpent. Earlier this week residents of the village of Val de Lourenza in Galicia contacted the Guardia Civil to report they had spotted two wolves prowling around deserted streets near their houses.

Domestic Violence THE Minister of Interior, Fernando GrandeMarlaska assures that Spain has intensified prevention and protection actions for potential victims of domestic violence during lockdown. Since the beginning of the State of Alarm police forces have arrested 4,142 people accused of genderbased violence. Furthermore, calls concerning domestic violence to the emergency number, 061, have almost doubled in the month of April. “We have not lowered our intensity in the fight against gendered violence,” claimed Marlaska as he clarified that officers had already processed 153,730 cases of all kinds and arrested 4,142 individuals for domestic abuse. Marlaska has also highlighted the reinforcement and success of the Alertcops mobile application which allows victims to communicate and send alerts to the police when they are in danger.

EASYJET STRUGGLES EASYJET: Flights to Spain remain grounded. BUDGET airline easyJet is facing a warning that it could go bust, as flights to Spain remain grounded. As the budget carrier has no services to offer, the focus for easyJet has switched to a massive battle to oust the company’s chairman John Barton and chief executive Johan Lundgren. The shareholder move is being spearheaded by easyJet founder Sir Stelios HajiIoannou over the company ordering a new fleet of aircraft from Airbus. The cost of the order is £4.5 billion, and Haji-Ioannou claims that it will bankrupt
easyJet, especially with what’s happening over the coronavirus crisis. He’s the largest shareholder in the company and the showdown vote will take place at a meeting on May 22. Sir Stelios described the current easyJet bosses as “scoundrels.” Not surprisingly, the company wants shareholders to vote against his resolution, and they said that any changes would be damaging. John Barton said: “This is not in the best interests of the company or its shareholders as a whole.”

Hollie, who has a dance and fitness background, points out that “our bodies aren’t on lockdown, so we can still keep ourselves fit during quarantine. “It’s hard not having a normal everyday routine,” Hollie admits, “but some way we have to make the most of it. “Always try to find the positive in every-
thing.” Thanks to social media Hollie is able to share her love of movement and exercise with others. “I have been recording Zumba videos for people to work out at home whenever they like: no obligations, nice, casual and fun. “The aim is to keep the body and mind working while we are not allowed out.”

As a cancer survivor herself, Maria has been in the vanguard to get people to take up early cancer screening tests, which is also promoted through her involvement in the AACC charity based in Playa Flamenca. A SPANISH nonexecutive director of the Bank of East Asia (BEA), Isidro Fainé Casas, has resigned from his position due to the coronavirus pan demic and the distance between Spain and Hong Kong. He is the chairman of the board of trustees of the Caixa d’Estalvis i Pen sions de Barcelona ‘la Caixa’ Banking Foundation, a company shareholder. Sr Fainé explained that it has be come increasingly difficult to devote the time and effort necessary amid the current situation, but the bank has engaged him as a special advisor.

Yes, they will. The validity of Spanish YOU AND THE driving permits LAW IN SPAIN that expire during the State of Alarm has been extended through the State of Alarm and for 60 days after the lockdown ends. This means that, if the lockdown is extended into May or even until June, you will have 60 days from the end of the period to renew your driving licence. This comes as part of a relief package passed by the government that includes extension for vehicle inspections, visas for for eigners, mortgage extensions and foreclosures, rental contracts, and many other administrative deadlines. Even so, it is wise to check on these measures regularly because they are modified from time to time.

Dyson order cancelled WHEN it was announced that James Dyson had been asked by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to produce 10,000 ventilators for the NHS there were numerous accusations of nepotism. UK grant loophole TIM FARRON MP has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer complaining that there is a loophole which is allowing second home owners to claim millions of pounds from the fund intended

BUSINESS EXTRA UK bailout TATA STEEL which employs 12,000 people in the UK has appealed for a £500 million (€575 million) bailout from the British government so that it can stay in business. The matter is under consideration by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Spain’s budget DESPITE all of the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus Covid19 pandemic, the European Union still requires member states to submit their annual budgets for review. The Spanish government has done this and is looking for a lenient view from Brussels.
Opening advice IN anticipation of an eventual reopening of non-essential stores in the UK, the British Retail consortium has been working with different unions to draw up guidelines to help shops to minimise risk to staff and customers when reopening takes place.

completely organised. The alar m was set, the laptop and books were neatly on the table, the timetable was neatly written using different colours, and everything was going to be fine. My son woke up on time, sat at the table, completed his work with only a few questions he needed help with and before i knew it, the day was complete! Wow! I can really do this, home schooling is a doddle, or so I thought!!! Fast forward to the end of the first week and things weren’t so dandy. My son was less motivated, the snooze button was pressed, the work got harder and OH MY GOD WHERE’S THE WINE!!! We had arguments, we had strops, we had complete meltdowns. What the hell am I doing, I’m no teacher, i hated algebra when i was at school so how on earth can I teach it to my son? I’m not even fluent in Spanish, he attends a Spanish school I don’t understand, I
PHOENIX PROGRAMMES: Helping clients’ addictions. can’t, i cant... I JUST CANT!!! The tears started to roll, i felt as if i was failing as a parent, was my son going to be left behind? Was my son going to struggle when the schools re-open? Then it hit me, like a saucepan to the face Mums, WE ARE NOT TRAINED TEACHERS! We haven’t been to college or university to study how to teach our kids so why on earth are we putting so much pressure on ourselves? Secondly, this is new to our children too! They’re not used to the situation we are in, they look at their homes as a place to feel safe, a place to have fun, a place of calm. They have spent six long weeks stuck at home with a mum or dad who picks up the wine every time they hear the words... SCHOOL WORK. Give them and yourselves a break! Take it one day at a
time. Whether your child completes five hours or one hour’s worth of work, celebrate it. If your child is feeling overwhelmed and simply cannot face a day of home schooling, teach them something fun. Teach them life skills. Cooking, reading, home exercise, anything to put a smile on their beautiful faces. The reality is, the lack of workload will not affect their adult life, it will not stop them from getting their dream job. It will not stop them from living a successful life. They will catch up, they will succeed, they will be happy! The lockdown and pandemic will be talked about for years; don’t let your children or yourself look back on it with dread, hurt or frustration. Create wonderful memories and look back on this moment with nothing but love and a smile. I raise a glass to all parents. We’ve got this!

Intrusive thoughts and mental health: MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED
INTRUSIVE thoughts a re thoughts that pop in to your head which are beyond your control and can become obsessive. They are thoughts that you do not want, and obsessions that you certainly would rather not have! It is something I have learned to deal with over the years, it can be anything from an unwanted image or a scenario that plays in your mind that can cause so much upset and can be very hard to manage or eliminate. The hardest one I feel like I have had to deal with to date is ‘losing the closest person to me,’ it’s a thought that creeps in, can be very graphic and very upsetting. It can pop up out of nowhere. I haven’t found a way to get rid intrusive thoughts, however there are ways I have been shown through therapy to cope with the unwanted thoughts: 1) You need to recognise if the thought is truly intrusive. Are you obsessing over something you don’t want to? Is the thought popping up
at times when it doesn’t make any sense? Is it upsetting you? 2) Acknowledge these thoughts when they happen. Tell yourself it is your mind producing these thoughts and try to distract yourself. 3) Take a deep breath. If you practise meditation, this a brilliant time to take 10 minutes out to practise it. Give yourself time. 4) Don’t judge your thoughts. Understand that these thoughts are part of your illness, so there isn’t any need to feel guilty, they aren’t wanted thoughts! 5) Try and replace the thought. This is the tricky part, try and think of a ‘happy’ or ‘positive’ thought. It’s easier said than done! But remember that these thoughts are created in your mind, they are not truly what you think or are not truly a part of you. Intrusive thoughts can happen to everyone. It’s how you cope with them that defines how much they’ll rule your life. In the end, it’s absolutely crucial that you work with a professional to find out how to help you cope with intrusive thoughts if you are finding it is having a negative affect on your day to day life. Hay fever season THE onset of spring means the beginning of the dreaded hay fever season, bringing symptoms including water y eyes, an itchy throat and frequent sneezing. Whilst over the counter medicines often help to reduce symptoms, alternative steps can also be taken for more natural relief. Here are some options: 1. Quercetin Quercetin can help to reduce inflammation and inhibits the release of histamine, stopping the reaction in its tracks. To up the quercetin in your diet, opt for foods including berries, parsley, onions, and peppers. 2. Biotin Biotin is a B vitamin which helps maintain the healthy function of mucous membranes. Try consuming more fish, egg yolks, avocados, green leafy vegetables and nuts to get your recommended dose. 3. GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY I REMEMBER a time when social media was a bit of fun. Even if I was taking a few days in the country, away from it all, Facebook still made me feel good. Looking at others posting their smiling photos, made me smile. It wasn’t so long ago, that people posted happy photos of them lunching with friends at beach clubs, or dancing at glamorous events. These days, my feed is filled with angry posts from people who are clearly struggling with being trapped at home. People I had assumed were light-hearted, and above resorting to online arguments over who claims to know more about Covid-19, politics, or religion. It’s as if suddenly, everyone is an expert on all things Chinese, having sourced their knowledge on Wikipedia. I drew the line and ended the call, when one FaceTime caller told me that my beloved Jack Russell, Henry, would be seen as a canapé in China. It’s as if ‘wine-o’clock’ starts earlier each day, and the rants too. Normal people, shouting at their phones, in an argument with themselves, as nobody really cares about what you’re saying. At numerous points during the week, I was almost ready to hit delete profile, just to escape. On the subject of escape, I stare at my diary, filled with endless cancelled plans. Cannes Film Festival - No. Monaco Grand Prix - No. Royal Ascot - No. The list of my usual summer, goes on, and each event has a red line through
BASE CAMP: Today my bed is my world. it. Over the years, these dates have given some structure, to a season otherwise filled with little more than the beach. Luckily, my house is right on the beach, so I won’t have far to go this year. Summer 2020 will be a very localised situation. As the week rolled on, I found myself setting up base camp from my bed. It’s as if everything I need is now located by my bed. If I’m downstairs and can’t find my, phone, glasses, diary, lighter, dog... chances are they’re at, or in my bed. I had to conduct a conference call on Thursday afternoon, and of course as the stressful work call went on, I found myself saying things like “I won’t leave my desk until we find a solution.” Leave my desk? I hadn’t even got any trousers on. I was in bed! I now rise early, swim, work out, make coffee and it’s back to bed. Some days, when I feel like it, I even take lunch in bed. I binge watch Netflix in bed. I write newspaper articles in bed. Bed is now Caput Mundi, and just like Marco Anneo Lucano who claimed it to be Rome in 61AD, for me, bed is now my great empire, from which I oversee work, banking, dining, and the greatest lockdown past time of all, sleep. Over the coming days, before getting into a heated row on Facebook, with people who don’t deserve your time, stop. Ask yourself, is there something else I could be doing? Read a book, tend to the garden, clean your pool. Anything is better than bad energy. Stay safe / stay sane x

Pause for Understanding WELL it’s been a strange Easter, but much of the strangeness is actually of particular relevance for the Easter message. So the fact that most churches were empty on Easter Sunday, normally the busiest service in the year, was extremely apt as, on that first Easter day, it was the emptiness, not of a Church, but of a tomb, that gave the day its particular significance. So, strange yes, but significant too, as Christians throughout the World use the situation to remind ourselves that the unease we may feel with churches being empty, is but a pale reflection of the unease felt by so many on that first Easter morning when it was discovered that the tomb into which the body of Jesus had been hastily buried just three days earlier, was now empty; his body had simply vanished and nobody could give any logical or acceptable explanation as to how or why this had happened. So yes, we could empathise with the sense of loss and uncertainty felt by so many on that morning nearly 2000 years ago. But beyond that, I would suggest we experienced many other
similar emotions over the ensuing days. So I guess many of us have been worried or afraid, wondering where all this would lead, looking at everyone we passed in the street or supermarket for fear of a sneeze or cough, which could infect in these uncertain times. So yes, many of us were quite literally locked in, absolutely avoiding contact with anyone else. And all of this is so similar to the description of the disciples in the days and weeks after the crucifixion of Jesus. So, John’s Gospel tells us that the disciples were together, locked in a room for fear of the authorities when Jesus came and stood with them. I’ve often previously wondered about this; why were they so afraid? And why locked in together? Well I certainly understand a little better now and our experiences these past few weeks seem to have made this story become more real and meaningful for me. Jesus came to meet these disciples, locked in with their fear, and I guess he can meet us too, despite our being locked in with our fears, concerns and worries.

It’s not a case of one size fits all MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man BECAUSE of the situation at the moment I don’t switch my phone off at night as I have children and grandchildren in the UK and, in case of emergencies, they can get hold of me 24/7. What I don’t have it on for is so Vodafone send me messages at 4am in the morning on a regular basis. Surely a communications company this size can work out that I’m not going to be interested in getting a free phone, unlimited roaming, which, at the moment is as useful as a chocolate teapot or, in fact, any offers at that hour of the day! There are so many rules at the moment and I appreciate that the government is doing its best, but unfortunately it’s not a case of one size fits all. I wonder why in the UK you can do some exercise, but here you can’t? It would make such a difference if you could get out for 30 minutes and just stretch your legs. It seems a little strange that if you don’t have a dog or
a young child you can’t go out except to do essential shopping. I happen to live up in the hills and am able to walk my dog once a day. Mrs S does the other walk. When I’m out I see maybe one other person walking their dog. But to be honest I don’t understand that they aren’t taking into consideration that everyone needs to exercise, not just dogs and children. Is it just me or do you all feel that we have stepped out of reality and into another dimension? I feel like we are all now starring in a sci-fi movie. You know the one - the disaster movie that always starts with an expert or scientist being ignored by the government with some ulterior motive usually motivated by power or money or both. So what did I do to just give myself a boost? I decided to watch a movie and my choice was, wait for it, a 2011 film called Contagion which is about a pandemic that starts in Asia. The reason I watched it is I remember watching it when it came out and thinking it was all a bit far-fetched but after watching it again I couldn’t believe that if shown now it would be a documentary and not sci-fi. So now I’m going to watch Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman just to cheer myself up again.

Touching letter HOLLYWOOD star and allround good guy Tom Hanks has sent a touching letter and a very meaningful gift to a young Australian lad, who wrote to tell him he was being bullied because of his name - Corona. Eight-year-old Gold Coast schoolboy Corona De Vries penned a letter to the actor after he and his wife Rita Wilson both went down with Covid-19 while in Queensland and spent several weeks recovering in hospital. Corona asked if the couple were OK and told the Oscar winner he liked his name, but that kids at his school were calling him “coronavirus” and it made him feel “sad and angry.” Hanks replied with a letter beginning “Dear Friend Corona” and words of en-
couragement he bashed out on a typewriter. “Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful! Thank you for being such a good friend friends make friends feel good when they are down,” he told him. “You know, you are the only person I’ve ever known to have the name Corona - like the ring around the sun, a crown,” he added. “You’ve got a friend in me!” Hanks hand wrote at the end in a reference to his role as Woody in the Toy Story films.
