BEGINNING OF THE END PRIME MINISTER SANCHEZ has outlined the measures involved in Spain’s de-escalation phase, this entire process has been divided into four separate phases and will last at least a month and a half. This plan will be gradual and moving to the next phase is dependent on the progress of the coronavirus epidemic. To keep control of the virus’s rate of infection each phase lasts a minimum of two weeks, as this is how long it takes to incubate the coronavirus. The de-escalation phases will be applied asymmetrically amongst autonomous communities, however they will all be coordinated by the same central government rules. We currently find ourselves in Phase 0, the preparation stage, which has included some relief
measures such as the recent change allowing children out for walks. This will also allow some businesses that operate by appointment to begin to offer services from Monday, May 4, and for restaurants to serve food to take away, said Sánchez. Individual training and walks will be permitted from Saturday as the prime minister previ-

Phase 1 will allow small retail and trade establishments to reopen; terraces will also be allowed to open but at a limited capacity and always when respecting the new protocols. Individuals over the age of 65, the most vulnerable risk group, will be given a designated time to use these shops to ensure
safety. Businesses taking advanced bookings can open as well as cultural establishments but with limited capacity and face masks will be strongly recommended when using public transport. Kids Let Out CHILDREN were allowed out for a walk with their parents last weekend, in a relaxing of the State of Alarm rules. The main points of the law are that youngsters aged 14 and under can only go out with an adult between 9.00am and 9.00pm, and the walk cannot be more than than a kilometre from their home, which is why an ID with an address on is compulsory at all times if you go outside. Some beach areas were also reopened like at Santa Pola, but many others remained closed, at least for the time being. Local reports suggested that the overwhelming number of new walkers were keeping to the rules.

Bar Owners Wait
HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY: Decisions have to be made on how to reopen. COSTA BLANCA bar owners are anxiously hoping for a reopening date, as the Costa del Sol has said that it wants the hospitality trade back in business at the end of May. Spain’s bar and restaurant sector has taken a gigantic hit during the State of Alarm, but it has received a big boost from the southern Andalucia region calling for its reopening in their area from May 25. The Madrid government though has the crucial final decision on how the lockdown rules will be phased out, including when bars and restaurants will reopen. With that in mind, Andalucia’s President Juanma Moreno has made the
formal suggestion over the reopening date to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. That also follows what Sanchez said over the possibility of different regions of the country moving at different speeds in easing out of the lockdown. His response will be keenly looked at by the hospitality industry across the Costa Blanca, who had to close their doors over six weeks ago. Some towns in the area have already been looking at how terraces could be changed around to take account of social distancing rules. Reduced or even totally-waived terrace rentals have been promised to bars and restaurants once they are allowed to reopen.
DRINKS producer, CocaCola, who have a production base in Alicante, have donated free drinks to essential workers in El Campello. The company said it wanted to “take care of those who are taking care of us in these difficult times and help those who are having the worst time.” The supplies were handed over to El Campello Local Police, who then distributed the fizzy gifts. Coca-Cola has already given away more than 700,000 litres of its drinks to people in the front line of the battle against Covid-19. In addition, the company has taken part in solidarity initiatives such as ‘Al-

NORWEGIAN AIR has launched a new campaign to encourage customers to look forward to the post-isolation era if they want to fly to AlicanteElche airport on the Costa Blanca. The Scandinavian airline has introduced what it has labelled as Norwegian Gift Cards, which can be bought with a specified credit and
then exchanged for airline tickets in
the future. The cards will be valid throughout the year of purchase as well as the following year. Up to 150 gift cards may be exchanged for airline tickets to any destination to which Norwegian flies, including Alicante-Elche.
LOCAL ice cream shop owners and makers have asked the Spanish government to see if they can sell their products on a takeaway basis. The National Association of Artisan Ice Cream Makers wants production to be restarted and sales to resume. It claims that the ice cream sector is at a disadvantage compared to other food producers. supermarket in the town. A source claims she ‘was creating confusion and social alarm among the population.’ The store’s management reported the damage the
message was causing, and claimed a fall in customers. The Guardia eventually identified the offender through several of her contacts who had received the message.
Cooking Up Help A DAILY meal service is being cooked up for needy people across the Costa Blanca in the kitchens of the Centro de Desarrollo Turístico (CdT) in Alicante and Torrevieja. The CdTs normally host courses in hotel management and other forms of tourist business training, but have now cooked and distribute meals to local charities and soup kitchens aimed at poverty-hit people. The idea was created by local restaurant owners and award-winning chefs under the umbrella name of Alicante Gastronomic Solidarity.

Around a thousand meals are cooked each day with some of the delivery points including the Solidarity Food Centre in Torrevieja and the DYA ambulance station in Elche.

Getting Ready COSTA BLANCA’S tourism information bosses have drawn up a Covid-19 contingency plan for its offices so that ‘nobody is left behind when we can reopen.’ The hard-hit sector is still in limbo with no official reopening date, but the network wants to be ready to act as soon as bars, restaurants and hotels can open their doors. Regional Tourism chief, Francesc Colomer, said “the goal we have set is that the entire Tourist Info Network of 190 offices can apply this plan,” to reassure tourists and help in the recovery of the industry. The Covid-19 contingency plan has been drawn up by the Quality and Innovation Committee of the Tourist Info Network, in which 43 technical specialists represent 25 municipalities across the Costa Blanca. The plan is flexible and offers a ‘dynamic way to respond at all times to the health, legal, economic and social circumstances that affect the sector during the health alert.’ It features a list of guidelines over staying safe for both businesses and tourists.
Pandemic Casualty ORIHUELA’S big La Reconquista and Moors and Christians celebrations in July have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Uncertainty over what the health situation would be like in the summer has led to organisers deciding on an early announcement. Orihuela Council said they sympathised with everybody involved in the planning of the fiestas, and hoped they would come back bigger and better next year.

Kids Getting Restless CHILDREN in Spain are showing big behavioural changes because of the lockdown, according to a Costa Blancabased study. Mireia Orgilés and Jose Pedro Espada from Elche’s Miguel Hernández University have conducted the first survey of its kind in Spain of youngsters during the State of Alarm period. They’ve also brought children from Italy into the mix, and the research saw 1,143 parents of youngsters aged between three to 18 years of age, taking part. The figures conclude that 89 per cent of Spanish parents

FIVE British nationals, aged between 26 and 41, were arrested on the Costa Blanca for allegedly being part of gang that bought large amounts of marihuana which would then be taken to the UK. A total of 230 kilos of the drug was stashed in a ‘hideout’ in La Nucia. The National Police in Benidorm began their inquiries into the gang earlier in the year after getting a tip-off about what was going on.

Brits in Drugs Swoop The informer told officers that the group was shipping large amounts of marihuana inside freight lorries, hidden amongst legal cargo. The inquiry focused on the gang members who owned various van-type vehicles. Officers discovered that the suspects
were not the producers of the drug, but that they bought large consignments from other traffickers, and organised its delivery overseas. In addition to the drugs, four vehicles and more than €15,000 in cash were seized.

Lockdown Rape A WOMAN was allegedly raped by her boyfriend as they were confined to their home during the lockdown quarantine in the Mar Menor area. A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Guardia Civil on sexual assault charges after the attack at their home in Los Alcázares. The victim, aged 21 years, had been living at the same address for a month, and she was abused after she had smoked some cannabis. She managed to escape her boyfriend’s clutches and called for help. The woman was examined at Los Arcos hospital in San Javier, where a doctor confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

A BIG programme of home mask deliveries has been taking place in San Miguel de Salinas. Around 7,000 residents live in the municipality and the local council have appealed for people to help them hand the masks out. The authority has also asked for urbanisa-
tion presidents and committees to let them know how many people are actually living in the area, as many properties are empty holiday homes. Pilar de la Horadada last week began handing out 35,000 masks, whilst Callosa de Segura started home distribution on Monday April 27.
EARLY risers may have felt the tremors of a low intensity earthquake in the Gran Alacant area last Friday morning (April 24). The epicentre was some four kilometres from the shore and struck at around 4.30am.
Shut Out SOME 5.6 per cent of residents in the Valencian Community are living in confinement with no street view during the State of Alarm, according to a survey done by the property portal Idealista. The figure rises to 7.9 per cent across the whole of Spain. Within the Valencia region, the province most affected by this type of ‘interior home’ situation is Castellon, with 6.6 per cent of its housing stock having no views at all. Alicante Province fares much better at 3 per cent. By national regions, Madrid has the highest percentage of homes with no views at 15.4 per cent.

MANY BARS: May never be able to reopen. WITH no imminent end in sight for the lockdown measures in the hospitality ind u s t r y, s o m e b a r s i n t h e Costa Blanca area may never reopen. Many bars rely on summer income to get them through the leaner winter months in seasonal areas like Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa. No foreign visitors, let alone home-based customers, means that some businesses will struggle to reopen eventually. The British owner of two bars in the Torrevieja area, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the Euro Weekly News:
”We are running a food delivery service from one of the bar kitchens, but that’s just bringing in peanuts, compared to our regular trade. “I have to pay two sets of rent and though the gover nment has got a payments holiday scheme, I am looking at the prospect of returning in the autumn at the earliest after losing my summer customers. “I might have to draw a line under everything.” The ‘For Sale’ and ‘For Rent’ signs may once again become a familiar sight, like in the recession over a decade ago, as permanent time on some bars is called once again.

Water Drops Down A LACK of tourists is causing the Costa Blanca to dry up in its use of water, according to official usage figures. With empty bars, hotels, and restaurants, as well as nobody using holiday rental accommodation, figures across Alicante Province show a massive average fall of 30 per cent in water consumption since the State of Alarm started. The drop is even more dramatic in the Benidorm area with a 45 per cent reduction in water taps being turned on. The average consumption drop in the south of Costa Blanca area is registered at 20 per cent, but as in the case of Benidorm, coastal areas like Torrevieja, Guardamar, and the Orihuela Costa are seeing larger reductions.

Panics A GUARDAMAR drug trafficker swallowed his own stash of drugs, after authorities spotted them on him. The 41-year-old Spaniard was arrested after his car was stopped by Guardia Civil officers on suspicion of breaking the State of Alarm rules. The man was distinctly nervous when officers started to ask him questions and they noticed some strange lumps underneath his clothes around his abdomen. He uncovered seven plastic bags of cocaine, but instead of handing them over, he started to shout and swallowed the packets, in addition to hitting one of the officers. He was taken to Torrevieja Hospital, and after the packs had worked their way through his system, he was charged with drug trafficking and assault.

Conning health workers out of cash
A FRAUDSTER who passed himself off as a doctor to con cash out of medical staff at a Madrid hospital is under arrest. Officers intercepted the suspect during a police control.
At the time he was carrying a medical uniform and an ID card in the name of a supposed immunology service specialist at the hospital in the national capital. Investigations revealed he had been
seen on several occasions at the hospital and had allegedly tried to collect money from health workers, which he said was to buy personal protection materials. Investigators also discovered he has a
record for scams. It emerged that on this occasion he had been operating with another young man, who also pretended to be a doctor, and who police said they have still not identified.

This strategy is based primarily on scrupulous compliance with security and prevention measures and on guaranteeing the provision of sufficient protective material for all staff, according to the public company. Correos’ return to normality plan contemplates three phases. The first involves expanding customer service from 9.30am to 12.30pm to 8.30am to 2.30pm. The second phase will mean that the main offices will extend their hours to the usual morning and afternoon hours, that is, from Monday to

AIR carrier Ryanair has been ordered to reverse a series of redundancies by the High Court in Madrid. The company were told to reinstate 224 workers collectively dismissed from four bases in the country. The High Court said the reasons given by the airline for the closures were not good enough. Ryanair said it had instructed its solicitors to appeal the decision. The court said the budget airline must im-
mediately reinstate the workers “in the same working conditions” and with “immediate payment of wages not received” since their contracts were terminated in January. Ryanair dismissed the employees, who worked at bases in Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, and at Girona on the mainland, after announcing it planned to close the four hubs due to delays in the delivery of grounded Boeing 737 MAX planes.

EASYJET STRUGGLES BUDGET airline easyJet is facing a warning that it could go bust, as flights to Spain remain grounded. As the budget carrier has no services to offer, the focus for easyJet has switched to a massive battle to oust the company’s chairman John Barton and chief executive Johan Lundgren. The shareholder move is being spearheaded by easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou over the company ordering a new fleet of aircraft from Airbus. The cost of the order is £4.5 billion, and Haji-Ioannou claims that it will bankrupt easyJet, especially with what’s happening over the

The officers broke into the villa on Sunday afternoon and discovered the participants dancing and drinking on the premises, breaching the measures imposed in the Royal Decree. The Guardia Civil received a complaint on Sunday afternoon about a resident hosting an outdoor party in a house located in a remote rural area belonging to the municipality of Sant Josep de sa Talaia in ibiza. Several patrols from both the Local Police and the Guardia Civil travelled to the location, and when they arrived in the area they found a sign advertising the party at the entrance towards the garden. In addition to the guests, there was also a catering service and a disc jockey hired to liven up the afternoon for the attendees. The host of the party has been arrested for breaking lockdown rules.

Surprise find A SUPERMARKET shopper in Avila got a huge surprise on Monday when they found an abandoned newborn baby in a trolley. The baby boy, which is no more than a couple of days old, had been wrapped up in a sheet and placed inside a shopping bag, then left in a trolley in the supermarket car-park. A woman overheard the little one’s cries and alerted the staff, who in turn called the emergency services. The baby has now been checked out by paediatricians at a local hospital and National Police posted on Twitter that the baby is in good health. Also, that they have opened an investigation to get to the bottom of the matter.

Inhuman conditions POLICE have freed 20 people living in disgusting conditions in a Madrid restaurant. Among the group officers found camping out at the premises in the San Blas district of the city were two babies less than a year old. When officers went in they found Spaniards, Bangladeshis, Colombians, Filipinos, Peruvians, Portuguese, Venezuelans and Hondurans living in tiny areas not fit for human habitation. There were mattresses on the bar, under the kitchen extractor fan and on the back terrace. Each living space was separated by cardboard or plastic. The business owner was trying to make up for being forced to close by
making a buck out of people with few financial resources. The victims were made to pay some ₏400 a month for an area no more than a metre and half long. If they couldn’t come up with the money they were denied access to basic services and made to sleep in even smaller spaces, like the toilet or a freezer chamber. There were even threats to infect them with coron-
avirus, police said. The owner claimed he was a Covid19 carrier and coughed and sneezed over the plates and other items if he found them eating. Both the restaurant boss and the owner of the property, who police said
was aware of what was going on, are under arrest. They face charges for abetting irregular immigration, coercion and crimes against public health. Police also said the investigation remains open and have not ruled out there being others involved.

THE coronavirus pandemic has altered many normal occurrences in our reality, now migrants are tr ying to flee from a Covid-ridden Spain back to their home countries. Retur ning home in the midst of a global pandemic has become an almost impossible mission which is fueling human trafficking networks. For example, at the end of March, a group of about 100 Moroccans embarked on two inflatable boats to return illegally to their country and bypass the restrictions decreed to stop the virus from spreading both in Spain and in Morocco. Each passenger paid around €5,400 for the trip, which ended on a beach in Larache, in northwestern Morocco. According to police sources, the price of a place on a boat from the Moroccan coast to Spain, that is, the opposite route, ranges between €400 and €1,000. An internal report of the European Commission illustrates the flexibility of the mafias: “Migrant smugglers show extreme flexibility and adaptability of their criminal businesses, and are now also organising irregular trips of Moroccan migrants fleeing from the Covid-19 in the opposite direction, that is, from Spain to Morocco,” the document cites. Domestic Violence THE Minister of Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska assures that Spain has intensified prevention and protection actions for potential victims of domestic violence during lockdown. Since the beginning of the State of Alarm police forces have arrested 4,142 people accused of genderbased violence. Furthermore, calls concerning domestic violence to the emergency number, 061, have almost doubled in the month of April. “We have not lowered our intensity in the fight against gendered violence,” claimed Marlaska as he clarified that officers had already processed 153,730 cases of all kinds and arrested 4,142 individuals for domestic abuse. Marlaska has also highlighted the reinforcement and success of the Alertcops mobile application which allows victims to communicate and send alerts to the police when they are in danger.

HOLLYWOOD star and all-round good guy Tom Hanks has sent a touching letter and a very meaningful gift to a young Australian lad, who wrote to tell him he was being bullied because of his name Corona. Eight-year-old Gold Coast schoolboy Corona De Vries penned a letter to the actor after he and his wife Rita Wilson both went down with Covid-19 while in Queensland and spent several weeks recovering in hospital. Corona asked if the couple were OK and told the Oscar winner he liked his name, but that kids at his school were calling him “coronavirus” and it made him feel “sad and angry.” Hanks replied with a letter beginning “Dear Friend Corona” and
words of encouragement he bashed out on a typewriter. “Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful! Thank you for being such a good friend friends make friends feel good when they are down,” he told him. “You know, you are the only person I’ve ever known to have the name Corona - like the ring around the sun, a crown,” he added. “You’ve got a friend in me!” Hanks hand wrote at the end in a reference to his role as Woody in the Toy Story films. The star also sent the lad a Corona-branded typewriter he had used during his quarantine in Australia, saying: “I thought this typewriter would suit you. “Ask a grown-up how it works. A SPANISH nonexecutive director of the Bank of East Asia (BEA), Isidro Fainé Casas, has resigned from his position due to the coronavirus pan demic and the distance between Spain and Hong Kong. He is the chairman of the board of trustees of the Caixa d’Estalvis i Pen sions de Barcelona ‘la Caixa’ Banking Foundation, a company shareholder. Sr Fainé explained that it has be come increasingly difficult to devote the time and effort necessary amid the current situation, but the bank has engaged him as a special advisor.

Yes, they will. The validity of Spanish YOU AND THE driving permits LAW IN SPAIN that expire during the State of Alarm has been extended through the State of Alarm and for 60 days after the lockdown ends. This means that, if the lockdown is extended into May or even until June, you will have 60 days from the end of the period to renew your driving licence. This comes as part of a relief package passed by the government that includes extension for vehicle inspections, visas for for eigners, mortgage extensions and foreclosures, rental contracts, and many other administrative deadlines. Even so, it is wise to check on these measures regularly because they are modified from time to time.

BUSINESS EXTRA UK bailout TATA STEEL which employs 12,000 people in the UK has appealed for a £500 million (€575 million) bailout from the British government so that it can stay in business. The matter is under consideration by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Zoe Parsons AS a strong, business owner, how have you got through the health crisis? “As a Counsellor who helps people who have experienced narcissist or domestic abuse, unfortunately, the need for my services has increased. Therefore, I have made myself more available to help people, and provide resources where they can go to get help.” When isolation is over what do you plan to do? “As a survivor of domestic violence, I know how important it is to not feel alone when you have experienced abuse, so I will continue to provide that safe emotional place for anyone who needs it.”
“PERHAPS it’s fortunate that I have an inbuilt preservation reserve, having spent three years in a hospital cot and learning to walk again aged seven,” muses PAWS-PATAS animal charity PR and fundraising coordinator Chrissie Cremore on why she’s doing alright under the health crisis restrictions. “Keep positive with a sense of humour,” is Chrissie’s lockdown survival tip.

We’ve created a restaurant WhatsApp group for our staff, which is great... all offering support to each other, helping through bad days and having lots of giggles.
HOLLIE NEWELL moved to Turre when she was just 18 and qualified as a Zumba teacher a year later. Hollie, who has a dance and fitness background, points out that “our bodies aren’t on lockdown, so we can still keep ourselves fit during quarantine. “It’s hard not having a normal everyday routine,” Hollie admits, “but some way we have to make the most of it. “Always try to find the positive in every-
thing.” Thanks to social media Hollie is able to share her love of movement and exercise with others. “I have been recording Zumba videos for people to work out at home whenever they like: no obligations, nice, casual and fun. “The aim is to keep the body and mind working while we are not allowed out.”
Kelly Jordan, Teacher AS a strong woman living in Spain how have you been wearing your crown during the crisis? “I haven’t really stopped, I am a teacher in an English school so have been doing online classes for my students as this crisis can’t allow them to get behind. I also have an Instagram food page so have
been making new creations with the limited fresh produce I can find.” What are you looking forward to after the lockdown is lifted? “When I get out of lockdown I want to make a meal for my friends with all the new recipes I have tried and am looking forward to seeing the school kids.”

MARIA WILSON is a passionate fundraiser for local cancer charities through her group Maria and the Pink Ladies. As a cancer survivor herself, Maria has been in the vanguard to get people to take up early cancer screening tests, which is also promoted through her involvement in the AACC charity based in Playa Flamenca. Maria says on Facebook: “One thing this whole Covid-19 situation has taught me is that we have one life to live. This is not a practice run for the future, this is it! The material things we invest in, are left behind only to be discarded.” She added that she’s enjoying spending more time with her husband Carl, as their busy commitments meant that going on holiday was the best way to fully concentrate on each other.

Indeed, it’s been reported that the hypocrite Trump has TWO iPhones! I then took stock of all the items I own that are made or assembled in China: my MP3 player, my iPhone, my iPad, my iMac, my Barclays card reader that gives me access to online banking, my vaping machines my … I could carry on all day. If I were to trash them all, I would instantly render myself both joyless and unemployed, for my livelihood depends on affordable top quality communication

The country overtook the US in 2013 as the largest trading nation in the world. Apart from computers and smartphones, the products we get from China include tea, rice, potatoes, cotton, furniture, knitted clothing, vehicles, medical apparatus and footwear. Calls to boycott Chinese prod-
ucts aren’t confined to Europe and America. India, for example, has also seen a steep rise in antiChinese sentiment. This in a country which is one of the world’s biggest importers of Chinese goods. It is also reliant on China for meeting its solar equipment demand. In 2018-19, China exported well above 60 per cent of electronic products and components and over 80 per cent of antibiotics to India. And in Japan over 90 per

While boycott calls are just plain dumb given that there are so few alternatives, demands that people should spurn Chinese shops and restaurants are nothing short of despicable. Chinese business owners and their families are suffering as much as everyone else affected by the pandemic - if not more so. Media reports say that Chinese districts are being given a wide berth, and racism is surfacing all over the globe. Here’s just one example: an ice cream shop in Rome taped a sign to its door in English and Chinese that said ‘due to international safety measures all people coming from China are not allowed access to this place.’ Let me make one thing crystal clear. I think China’s record on human rights stinks, but my real contempt is reserved for companies, seeking ever bigger profits, that have transferred the manufacture of their products to a country infamous for cheap labour and deplorable working conditions. But hey folks, that’s capitalism for you.

Having time to change ROBERT SHALLIS
GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY I REMEMBER a time when social media was a bit of fun. Even if I was taking a few days in the country, away from it all, Facebook still made me feel good. Looking at others posting their smiling photos, made me smile. It wasn’t so long ago, that people posted happy photos of them lunching with friends at beach clubs, or dancing at glamorous events. These days, my feed is filled with angry posts from people who are clearly struggling with being trapped at home. People I had assumed were light-hearted, and above resorting to online arguments over who claims to know more about Covid-19, politics, or religion. It’s as if suddenly, everyone is an expert on all things Chinese, having sourced their knowledge on Wikipedia. I drew the line and ended the call, when one FaceTime caller told me that my beloved Jack Russell, Henry, would be seen as a canapé in China. It’s as if ‘wine-o’clock’ starts earlier each day, and the rants too. Normal people, shouting at their phones, in an argument with themselves, as nobody really cares about what you’re saying. At numerous points during the week, I was almost ready to hit delete profile, just to escape. On the subject of escape, I stare at my diary, filled with endless cancelled plans. Cannes Film Festival - No. Monaco Grand Prix - No. Royal Ascot - No. The list of my usual summer, goes on, and each event has a red line through
BASE CAMP: Today my bed is my world. it. Over the years, these dates have given some structure, to a season otherwise filled with little more than the beach. Luckily, my house is right on the beach, so I won’t have far to go this year. Summer 2020 will be a very localised situation. As the week rolled on, I found myself setting up base camp from my bed. It’s as if everything I need is now located by my bed. If I’m downstairs and can’t find my, phone, glasses, diary, lighter, dog... chances are they’re at, or in my bed. I had to conduct a conference call on Thursday afternoon, and of course as the stressful work call went on, I found myself saying things like “I won’t leave my desk until we find a solution.” Leave my desk? I hadn’t even got any trousers on. I was in bed! I now rise early, swim, work out, make coffee and it’s back to bed. Some days, when I feel like it, I even take lunch in bed. I binge watch Netflix in bed. I write newspaper articles in bed. Bed is now Caput Mundi, and just like Marco Anneo Lucano who claimed it to be Rome in 61AD, for me, bed is now my great empire, from which I oversee work, banking, dining, and the greatest lockdown past time of all, sleep. Over the coming days, before getting into a heated row on Facebook, with people who don’t deserve your time, stop. Ask yourself, is there something else I could be doing? Read a book, tend to the garden, clean your pool. Anything is better than bad energy. Stay safe / stay sane x
DURING such unprecedented times, we are all undoubtedly experiencing some drastic changes in how we live. None of us could have predicted that only a few weeks ago, our everyday lives would be impacted in so many ways; physically, mentally and financially. Martin Luther King once said “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.” That statement is certainly worth some thought. It is all too easy to bury one’s head in the sand and let the emotions of fear and worry render us stationary. It’s all too easy to buy into the drama of conspiracy theories and fake news, which in turn only adds to the negative energy around us. So, to move forward, interestingly enough, we actually first need to take a small step back and be grateful for what many of us still have right now; health, family, friends. Acknowledging the good that’s still in your life, hard as it may seem at the moment, can be uplifting. One important thing to appreciate and focus on, which so many of us have never had before, is ‘time.’ Time is the most valuable and precious asset you can acquire and it is our choice to do with it what we wish. Every day we hear of people stepping up with acts of kindness and of course the amazing heroic efforts of key workers and those in the health service, caring for others on a daily
TIME: An important thing to appreciate and focus on. basis. Although, we are not all in a position to do this, but what we can do, is make the most of the time we have. We can take this time to reflect on our lives and make the changes we feel necessary. With accessibility to materialism taken away from us so suddenly, we could question if we really needed it in the first place, was it making us happy or did we just simply take for granted what we had before the world stopped? With every change, there also brings opportunity. Time being the opportunity in this case, enabling us to look at ourselves and ask; what have we learnt and what would we do differently next time. We could even ask ourselves honestly whether we are proud of how we have been living our lives. We have a chance to revaluate what really matters and to make a fresh start once we are able to commence with getting back on track. It’s a window of opportunity to
spend time with ourselves and decipher what is important in life and is it bringing a degree of happiness. We may not be able to change the current situation but we can certainly change our attitude around it and begin to focus on the positive. If not for ourselves we can hold that positive space for others who may need some encouragement and hope. Happiness has many factors, one of which is contributing to others which many of us have the time to do so at present. There are only so many tomorrows, so now is an ideal time to make a decision, to take action, make the change, move forward and become a better version of yourself. Once these challenging times have passed, it will be about the person you decided to become that will define you and make a difference not just to you but to those around you. A CAFFEINE DREAM DEAR Euro Weekly, Thanks for keeping me going. I can’t wait to get back outside, I am genuinely missing random human contact. Before the lockdown I would be moaning about too many people in the street, the Spaniards congregating in the middle of small pavements for a family chat, nobody covering the tills on Mercadona when it’s busy, you know the regular moany old man stuff. Now I just can’t wait to see people in the street, children playing in the parks again, angry rushes along the high street to get home to my dog after work. It’s funny the things you take for granted that you miss. Hopefully, it will continue to make me feel differently. I don’t miss the beggars or being shoulder barged by ignorant people, but I do miss my favourite coffee! Yours in need of a good cuppa. Frank Dollimore Los Boliches

OUR VIEW Wild love FEW are lucky enough to go into the wild these days. Under lockdown, our horizons have shrunk. Beloved nature reserves and glorious national parks must wait until the quarantine is lifted. Yet it seems the wild is coming to us. In Barcelona, a snake is wrapped around a parked motorbike engine. In Puerto Banus, dolphins swim among the boats in the port. In Alhaurin, even wolves have been spotted and large jellyfish float through Venice’s now clear canals. Animals are moving into the spaces that humans have vacated, and we are unusually receptive to their arrival. When days seem so indistinct, the appearance of a new bird outside the window suddenly seizes our attention. Birdsong is clearer now that the traffic has hushed. With quieter roads, the death toll of furry creatures is guaranteed to fall. Grass verges, left uncut, will provide a home for wildflowers and a breeding ground for bugs and insects. Heavy machinery is parked up, leaving nests undisturbed. Animal appearances seem to bring such joy to human hearts that some tales of returning wildlife have been exaggerated or confected. However, much work to protect wildlife has slowed or stopped due to social distancing measures, and the dog shelters and horse sanctuaries, often strapped for cash, are under increased pressure. In developing countries, the absence of tourism and monitoring groups may give free rein to poachers who will see no more need to obey quarantine rules. People already living close to the edge may be forced to exploit nature to survive as their work disappears. When the pandemic is finally over, wildlife may vanish as fast as it emerged, we may not really notice so we should enjoy it while we can.

He said pets can get infected and ‘there’s no evidence that the virus is transmitted from pets to humans but anything is possible.’ That’s a bit scary. In need of a cuppa.
I’ve never responded to any article in any media even though I’ve become increasingly infuriated by the sensationalism, fake news, hysteria, and unbalanced minority driven reporting by so many mainstream journalists in the last three years. But the above article did it for me, so I’m addressing my concerns to yourself as one of the only sane voices in an increasingly insane media, maybe you could spread some sanity. When we embed the media in a military conflict it places risk and burden on the units and soldiers involved, but it’s justified as it’s essential for the public to know what is happening on the front line and for the military to know the public understands their role and hardship. Covid-19 is a war and no different, when we emerge from the far side of this crisis the authorities and the public will be desperate to analyse and learn from every aspect of what happened. The health service will be desperate to show the world the warlike conditions they worked under, the hardships they faced, and the superhuman effort it took from everyone to manage an impossible situation and save lives. Ross Kemp is a world-class investigative journalist and we should be applauding his efforts to report on the crisis. To have no insight at the end of the crisis would be a travesty. Regards Pete D

YOU CAN FEEL NORMAL

LAST week I ranted about antivaxxers and the Corona virus. It was followed by me discussing my Autism/Asperger’s, briefly. It’s not something I tend to talk about in detail normally. But as I’m writing a column. Perhaps it’s about time I did. So here goes… I was diagnosed late 30’s. I’d already guessed so a year or so before. What lead me to suspect I had Asperger’s Syndrome was someone on a reality TV show, of all things. He described himself as almost identical in the way he thought and acted. The penny dropped. I’d always felt ‘different.’ In primary school this wasn’t a bad thing. I was the daft kid and popular. I had obsessions, but they manifested themselves in silly TV shows or toys. I wouldn’t have stood out as Autistic, because I wasn’t the stereotypical introvert. I was shy out of my comfort zone, but I had many friends. I was happy and laughed my way through most of childhood. It felt safe. Then high school. Straight away I felt out of my depth. I was completely over-

FEELING DIFFERENT: You’re not alone. whelmed with the size of the place and all the new faces. The sounds - like the crowds of students moving down the corridors seemed deafening. There was no structure - a different classroom for each lesson, different faces every time. I still had
my small group of quirky friends I was comfortable with. But you do spend your majority of the time in the classrooms. Hitting teens was hard. I wasn’t ready to grow up. I still felt like the daft kid in primary school. So, I faked it. Not uncommon in Autistic girls, they call it ‘masking’ and it’s exhausting. I also developed an eating disorder at around 15. Again, not uncommon in Autistic girls. I lost a little weight to be told how good I looked. Well, I didn’t stop there! Because typical of someone with Autism, I became obsessed. I left school after achieving very little. I missed most of the final year because I’d fallen behind. By this time I was experiencing what I now recognise as anxiety. A panicky feeling which forced me to protect myself by zoning out, what is known
as ‘shutdowns.’ Lessons were too stressful. Further education and work were up and down. I tended to excel in jobs where I worked on my own initiative. The eating disorder dissipated towards my early 20’s. Life generally from then on was good. But I still felt like an alien. There were still situations I couldn’t handle too. Shopping centres for, example. The panicky feeling would come back. If I couldn’t leave straight away, I’d start to feel frightened. I couldn’t identify with the way other females thought either. But I got married and started a family. I did all the normal things that are expected of us, but still felt very detached from the human race. Then came that realisation. My new obsession became Autism! The diagnosis wasn’t a shock, because I’d already become a mini expert in the topic. So there you go. It’s not something I want to define me. But it’s part of me. Apparently, there’s many undiagnosed adults out there. So even if just one person identifies with this and that penny drops for them too, I’m glad I wrote it. Because once you realise why you’re not ‘normal’ you feel more normal. You’re not alone. Next week it’s back to ranting!

INTRUSIVE thoughts are thoughts that pop in to your head which are beyond your control and can become obsessive. They are thoughts that you do not want, and obsessions that you certainly would rather not have! It is something I have learned to deal with over the years, it can be anything from an unwanted image or a scenario that plays in your mind that can cause so much upset and can be very hard to manage or eliminate. The hardest one I feel like I have had to deal with to date is ‘losing the closest person to me,’ it’s a thought that creeps in, can be very graphic and very upsetting. It can pop up out of nowhere. I haven’t found a way to get rid intrusive thoughts, however there are ways I have been shown through therapy to cope with the unwanted thoughts: 1) You need to recognise if the thought is truly intrusive. Are you obsessing over something you don’t want to? Is the thought popping up
at times when it doesn’t make any sense? Is it upsetting you? 2) Acknowledge these thoughts when they happen. Tell yourself it is your mind producing these thoughts and try to distract yourself. 3) Take a deep breath. If you practise meditation, this a brilliant time to take 10 minutes out to practise it. Give yourself time. 4) Don’t judge your thoughts. Understand that these thoughts are part of your illness, so there isn’t any need to feel guilty, they aren’t wanted thoughts! 5) Try and replace the thought. This is the tricky part, try and think of a ‘happy’ or ‘positive’ thought. It’s easier said than done! But remember that these thoughts are created in your mind, they are not truly what you think or are not truly a part of you. Intrusive thoughts can happen to everyone. It’s how you cope with them that defines how much they’ll rule your life. In the end, it’s absolutely crucial that you work with a professional to find out how to help you cope with intrusive thoughts if you are finding it is having a negative affect on your day to day life. The alarm was set, the laptop and books were neatly on the table, the timetable was neatly written using different colours, and everything was going to be fine. My son woke up on time, sat at the table, completed his work with only a few questions he needed help with and before i knew it, the day was complete! Wow! I can really do this, home schooling is a doddle, or so I thought!!! Fast forward to the end of the first week and things weren’t so dandy. My son was less motivated, the snooze button was pressed, the work got harder and OH MY GOD

HOME SCHOOLING: Take it one day at a time. WHERE’S THE WINE!!! We had arguments, we had strops, we had complete meltdowns. What the hell am I doing, I’m no teacher, i hated algebra when i was at school
so how on earth can I teach it to my son? I’m not even fluent in Spanish, he attends a Spanish school I don’t understand, I can’t, i cant... I JUST CANT!!! The tears started to roll, i felt
as if i was failing as a parent, was my son going to be left behind? Was my son going to struggle when the schools reopen? Then it hit me, like a saucepan to the face Mums, WE ARE NOT TRAINED TEACHERS! We haven’t been to college or university to study how to teach our kids so why on earth are we putting so much pressure on ourselves? Secondly, this is new to our children too! They’re not used to the situation we are in, they look at their homes as a place to feel safe, a place to have fun, a place of calm. They have spent six long weeks stuck at home with a mum or dad who picks up the wine every time they hear the words... SCHOOL WORK. Give them and yourselves a break! Take it one day at a time. Whether your child completes
five hours or one hour’s worth of work, celebrate it. If your child is feeling overwhelmed and simply cannot face a day of home schooling, teach them something fun. Teach them life skills. Cooking, reading, home exercise, anything to put a smile on their beautiful faces. The reality is, the lack of workload will not affect their adult life, it will not stop them from getting their dream job. It will not stop them from living a successful life. They will catch up, they will succeed, they will be happy! The lockdown and pandemic will be talked about for years; don’t let your children or yourself look back on it with dread, hurt or frustration. Create wonderful memories and look back on this moment with nothing but love and a smile. I raise a glass to all parents. We’ve got this!

BARRY DUKE WHEN I first became aware of the hatred unleashed against China by America’s imbecile of a President my immediate thought was that the vast majority using social media to parrot his demands for a boycott of Chinese products were using phones and computers made or assembled in the very country they want to see punished for the Covid-19 pandemic. Indeed, it’s been reported that the hypocrite Trump has TWO iPhones! I then took stock of all the items I own that are made or assembled in China: my MP3 player, my iPhone, my iPad, my iMac, my Barclays card reader that gives me access to online banking, my vaping machines my … I could carry on all day. If I were to trash them all, I would instantly render myself both joyless and unemployed, for my livelihood depends on affordable top quality communication

Clearly those who rushed to their made-in-China keyboards to express Sinophobia after the Covid-19 outbreak hadn’t engaged what can only be laughingly called their brains. Had they done some rudimentary research before venting their hysteria they would have discovered just how dependent we all are on Chi-
nese products and technology. According to a February, 2020, commodity.com report China has been the world’s biggest exporter of goods since 2009. The country overtook the US in 2013 as the largest trading nation in the world. Apart from computers and smartphones, the products we get from China include tea, rice, potatoes, cotton, furniture, knitted clothing, vehicles, medical apparatus and footwear. Calls to boycott Chinese prod-
ucts aren’t confined to Europe and America. India, for example, has also seen a steep rise in antiChinese sentiment. This in a country which is one of the world’s biggest importers of Chinese goods. It is also reliant on China for meeting its solar equipment demand. In 2018-19, China exported well above 60 per cent of electronic products and components and over 80 per cent of antibiotics to India. And in Japan over 90 per
cent of the coffins sold come from China. While boycott calls are just plain dumb given that there are so few alternatives, demands that people should spurn Chinese shops and restaurants are nothing short of despicable. Chinese business owners and their families are suffering as much as everyone else affected by the pandemic - if not more so. Media reports say that Chinese districts are being given a wide berth, and racism is surfacing all over the globe. Here’s just one example: an ice cream shop in Rome taped a sign to its door in English and Chinese that said ‘due to international safety measures all people coming from China are not allowed access to this place.’ Let me make one thing crystal clear. I think China’s record on human rights stinks, but my real contempt is reserved for companies, seeking ever bigger profits, that have transferred the manufacture of their products to a country infamous for cheap labour and deplorable working conditions. But hey folks, that’s capitalism for you.
