BEGINNING OF THE END PRIME MINISTER SANCHEZ has outlined the measures involved in Spain’s de-escalation phase, this entire process has been divided into four separate phases and will last at least a month and a half. This plan will be gradual and moving to the next phase is dependent on the progress of the coronavirus epidemic. To keep control of the virus’s rate of infection each phase lasts a minimum of two weeks, as this is how long it takes to incubate the coronavirus. The de-escalation phases will be applied asymmetrically amongst autonomous communities, however they will all be coordinated by the same central government rules. We currently find ourselves in Phase 0, the preparation stage, which has included some relief measures such as the recent change allowing children out for walks. This will also allow some businesses that operate by appointment to begin to offer services from Monday, May 4, and for restaurants to serve food to take away, said Sánchez. Individual training
and walks will be permitted from Saturday as the prime minister previously hinted. Phase 1 will allow small retail and trade establishments to reopen; terraces will also be allowed to open but at a limited capacity and always when respecting the new protocols. Individuals over the age of 65, the most vulnerable risk group, will be given a designated time to use these shops to ensure safety. Businesses taking advanced bookings can open as well as cultural establishments but with limited capacity and face masks will be strongly recommended when using public transport. Hotels and tourist accommodations will reopen, however all common spaces must be closed. Phase 2 is the intermediate transitional period in which restaurants can begin serving customers inside but at only under strict security measures. Cultural events can restart but with a limit of 40 people in attendance. Phase 3 is the final stage, although face masks will still be recommended, if all measures and coronavirus figures correlate effectively then gen-

WORKERS’ DAY: Now a public holiday on May 1. INTERNATIONAL WORKERS’ DAY is celebrated across the world on May 1 and therefore is more commonly known as May Day. The event was first acknowledged in the 19th century, with the labour movements and trade union growing, several days were selected by the trade unionists as a day for celebrating labour. May 1 was chosen to be Interna-
tional Workers’ Day to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago when there was a general strike for the eight-hour workday. The strike turned into riots that led to the deaths of workers and policemen and the execution of four labour leaders. In the past, the symbolic day was marked by protests and demonstrations across the countries that still had unfair laws re-
garding workers’ rights. However, today it is a national holiday that celebrates the social and economic achievements of workers all across the world. In Spain, it is known as Día del Trabajador or Primero de Mayo. The holiday had actually been banned by the Franco regime in 1937 and was not re-introduced as a public holiday until 1978.

100th birthday PEGGY BLOOMFIELD celebrated her 100th birthday in lockdown, and while she may not have had the huge birthday party family and friends in Moraira have been planning for the last 12 months, volunteers from the Civil Protection swung by with sirens blaring to sing Happy Birthday to her. Val told Euro Weekly News: “Mum was really looking forward to having a party at Saxos in Moraira, with all her friends and family, but now we will have to wait until we can reschedule, maybe later this year.” Peggy is hugely popular in her home town. ELITE soldiers from the Special Operations Command have joined security forces in Benissa to help police State of Alarm measures. The 16 military personnel normally based in the Alferez Rojas Navarrete barracks in Alicante will ‘establish a solid and effective link with local authorities and security forces to assist in surveillance and in the event of possible breaches of confinement.’ The move is part of the ‘Balmis’ operation directed by the Chief of Defence Staff (CHOD) in which a total of 2,500 men and women from the three armies, the Military Emergency Unit (UME) and the Royal Guard are assisting security personnel during the pandemic. Balcony Ordeal AN elderly woman endured a frightening experience after she was stranded outside her home in Elche. Firefighters were called out in the middle of night to help her, after she was heard crying for help from the balcony of her home on Calle Espiridión Porta Requesens. She had gone outside six hours earlier to join in the mass applause for health and emergency staff working during the coronavirus crisis. Unfortunately as she was getting ready to return indoors, she slipped and fell to the ground. She was unable to get up due to her frail state, and her cries for help were not heard. Hours later, a neighbour heard her shouting and called the authorities. An Elche fire crew got into her home to rescue her, and she received treatment for hypothermia at the scene from paramedics.

NEIGHBOURS: Short Story winner Tony Lawton. DESPITE the coronavirus lockdown curtailing U3A Javea activities, many of its 1,200 members have been finding alternative ways of keeping their brains active. One project which proved particularly popular was a Short Story competition, the brainchild of founder member Mike
Frost and his wife Katrina. There was a good response to the idea with a number of people sending in their entries. Finally, a short-list of six was selected. Mike, Katrina together with newly-elected President Mick Cox and his wife Val read all six and a winner was chosen.
The winning story, a Javea-based thriller entitled Neighbours, was written by Tony Lawton. His prize was a meal for two - but Tony generously donated the prize money to U3A Javea’s charity of the year, Make A Smile. The runners-up were: Peter Davies (What Friends Are For), George Thomas (PoW), Jenny Falloon (Master of the Task Force), Tony Henderson (The Typhoon) and Peter Langley (The Call of the Grim Reaper). Frontline testing DENIA Hospital is carrying out more than 3,000 Covid-19 tests on all health personnel and certain patients in 11 different areas this week. This includes all DSD staff in Marina Alta and employees as well as residents of elderly centres in the area. The aim is to guarantee the safety of professionals and patients, and thus protect the rest of the population against possible contaminations. More than 3,000 diagnostic tests to detect antibodies against Covid-19 will be carried out to help control the spread and determine the extent of the contagion. A DSD spokesman said: “The aim is to create the safest possible scenario for the future gradual and orderly resumption of care activity throughout the health department.” The move is part of a global initiative of the Regional Ministry of Universal Health and Public Health and is another of the contingency measures implemented by Marina Salud during the health crisis.

have donated money for food vouchers for those in need and also to the Men’s Refuge in Gandia who were struggling for funds. If anyone in our area is in need - we aim to help
- by working with existing charities or direct to individuals, but we can only do this as long as we have funds to give. We work closely with local Social Services departments who are doing a fantastic job and also the many other charities working in our area. THE beaches of El Campello have been opened for the exclusive use of children up to 14 years old, accompanied by an adult. The town council’s Department of Beaches announced the move on Saturday, April 27, and stressed the beaches can only be used for “a stroll” and only by authorised persons for “a kilometre stretch of the coast.”

Additionally, the asphalt and road markings are now more non-slip than before in the area which has a maximum speed of 10 kph. Hospital reinforcements DENIA Hospital has doubled its staff to protect the health of frontline workers during the coronavirus crisis. The Preventive Medicine and Occupational Health Service (DSD) has been re-
inforced during the pandemic to ensure ‘round the clock’ healthcare at the hospital and nearby health centres. DSD Manager, Luis Carretero, has highlighted the “effort and commitment” of
the health personnel, who he said have adapted incredibly to the constant organisational changes of protocols, forming new teams and performing extraordinary tasks. At present there is a large team of professionals made up of doctors, nurses, technicians in Occupational Risk Prevention and administrative staff dedicated to the prevention, identification, diagnosis and monitoring of all employees with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 infection. The objective of the reinforcements is to guarantee attention 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Among the tasks of this group, specially trained to deal with the coronavirus among DSD professionals, is prevention, through training and constant review of protocols, add diagnostic tests or comprehensive monitoring of the clinic.

VITAL SERVICE: El Campello Town Hall wants to see the frequency extended.
EL CAMPELLO Town Hall has urged the government to ‘immediately’ extend the timetables of a bus that connects with San Juan Hospital so that health workers can get to work. The council addressed the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, to raise the need to increase the intercity bus service that connects this municipality daily with the nearest hospital in San Juan. Councillors stressed “strong restrictions on regular public transport services are having a detrimental affect.”
Specifically, they claim the changes that most affect the people of El Campello at the moment are those that have been implemented on the C-53 line, a service used by a large number health care staff and need it to get to and from work. “The mentioned line has drastically reduced its service since yesterday, April 22, and it is requested that it be restored to normal immediately, since great damage is being done to the most important personnel in these hard times, precisely those who work in essential activities in hospitals,” said the town hall in a statement.

Open market THE Valencian Government will allow popular markets across the region to reopen to sell food and basic essentials from today, Thursday April 30, although the final decision will be left to each local municipality. High quality and cheap produce has been a magnet for British buyers at the well-attended markets throughout the Costa Blanca region, but they were stopped from trading shortly before the State of Alarm started. The Ministry of Health has now introduced a set of conditions after talks with traders, which will allow food stallholders to return to selling. That includes a 2.5-metre gap between the different stalls, and a two-metre distance between people working at the stall and their customers. Stalls can use their regular pitches so long as the distancing limits are clearly marked out and that all the social distancing measures are maintained. Sellers must also keep a distance of two metres between themselves at their pitch and if that is not possible, then only one person can man a business.

Hotel Canino y Felino El Rey de la Casa has been looking after dogs and cats while their owners are carrying out vital work since the beginning of the pandemic, and has now extended its services to others in need. The Department of Women and Equality said victims of gender vio-
lence who are forced to leave their homes during confinement will also have somewhere for their pets to stay. The initiative, which is already being carried out successfully in different parts of the country, is reliant on the altruistic support and collaboration of staff at El Rey de la Casa who make sure pets are well cared for during the health crisis. Brits in custody FIVE Brits have been arrested in Costa Blanca after 230 kilos of marihuana destined for the UK was seized by Benidorm police. The suspects, aged 26 to 41, were arrested in La Nucia as alleged members of a criminal network involved in buying large consignments of marihuana to transport to the UK. Police sources confirmed 230 kilos of the drug was stashed in a ‘hideout’ in La Nucia. At the beginning of the year, the investigators from the Judicial Police Brigade of the Benidorm National Police Station, received information about a possible criminal organisation that might
be operating in the area. The informer told police the gang was shipping large amounts of marihuana to the UK inside freight lorries, hidden amongst legal cargo. The inquiry focused on the now disbanded alleged criminal group, whose members owned various van-type vehicles. Officers discovered the suspects were not the producers of the drug, but they bought large consignments from other traffickers, and organised its delivery overseas. In addition to the drugs, four vehicles and more than â‚Ź15,000 in cash has been seized. The five detainees are due to appear in court.

MULTI-NATIONAL beverage company Coca-Cola has shown its appreciation to El Campello’s altruistic workers, the police, street cleaners, civil protection and social workers for their continued efforts during State of Alarm. Their altruistic efforts have prompted many local businesses to join the wave of solidarity, and the most recent reocgnition has come from Coca-Cola.
Taste the feeling The firm, with a headquarters in Alicante, said it wanted to “take care of those who are taking care of us the most in these difficult times and help those who are having the worst time.” The donation was made to the Local
Police Commissioner in El Campello and from there, will be distributed to the various local government offices. The company has been making similar gestures since the beginning of the health crisis. It not only collaborates with different

administrations, but also with clients and social agents. To date, it has already given away more than 700,000 litres of its drinks to healthcare and security personnel. In addition, Coca Cola has taken part in solidarity initiatives such as ‘Alicante Gastronomica’ through which donations are made to soup kitchens and homeless people.
Dos and Don’ts for PMVs CALPE’s modified bylaws will regulate personal mobility vehicles (PMVs) and, above all, electric scooters. The new regulations stipulate that these vehicles may use bicycle lanes and roads with a 30kph speed limit or residential roads with a 20kph limit. They may not be ridden on pavements, prome-
nades or in parks, except for electric wheelchairs used by those with mobility problems. Groups of hired scooters are limited to six and must be accompanied by a guide while keeping to routes and timetables authorised by the town hall. PMVs “Parking PMVs on pavements is absolutely prohibited,” the town hall an-
nounced, specifying that they should be parked in the spaces allocated for bicycles and motorcycles. As well as respecting traffic and road safety regulations, users should wear helmets, carry the PMV’s technical documentation and have thirdparty insurance cover. Fines for infringements range from €750 to €3,000.

ALFAZ DEL PI Council has confirmed 188 fines have been issued in the town since the State of Alarm began on March 14, all of which were for repeated non-compliance. Councillor for Public Safety, Toni Such, said this figure reflects the social reality, but added “these are the exceptions.” He said: “The limitation of freedom of movement has been, and still is, one of the measures of greatest impact of the state decree. It requires greater police presence in the streets, and neighbours are feeling the proximity of the State Security Forces in these complicated circumstances.” Increased surveillance in Alfaz del Pi - in particular at accesses to the beach means there are five Local Police patrols, 15 Civil Protection volunteers, reinforcements from the Guardia Civil and State Security Forces and Corps. Such made a new call for public responsibility, saying: “We owe it to those who are working in the frontline to adhere to the restrictions.”

POLICE have freed 20 people living in disgusting conditions in a Madrid restaurant. Among the group officers found camping out at the premises in the San Blas district of the city were two babies less than a year old. When officers went in they found Spaniards, Bangladeshis, Colombians, Filipinos, Peruvians, Portuguese, Venezuelans and Hondurans living in tiny areas not fit for human habitation. There were mattresses on the bar, under the kitchen extractor fan and on the back terrace. Each living space was separated by cardboard or plastic. The business owner was trying to make up for being forced to close by making a buck out of people with few financial resources. The victims were made to pay some €400 a month for an area no more than a metre and half long. If they couldn’t come up with the money they were denied access to basic services and made to sleep in even smaller spaces, like the toilet or a freezer chamber. There were even threats to infect them with coron-

Ryanair Rapped AIR carrier Ryanair has been ordered to reverse a series of redundancies by the High Court in Madrid. The company were told to reinstate 224 workers collectively dismissed from four bases in the country. The High Court said the reasons given by the airline for the closures were not good enough. Ryanair said it had instructed its solicitors to appeal the decision. The court said the budget airline must immediately reinstate the workers “in the same working conditions” and with “immediate payment of wages not received” since their contracts were terminated in January. A DAD, who dumped his young son on the hard shoulder, has been arrested after weeks of trying to locate him. The man was driving along the A-44 in Granada on March 19 when he came across a routine State of Alarm police check. But rather than stopping, he sped off in a ‘reckless and dangerous manner,’ forcing a traffic officer to move out of the way to avoid being run over. Police jumped into a patrol car and chased the suspect, who reportedly stopped briefly on the hard shoulder to let a child out, and made off at ‘a crazy speed.’ This bought him a little time as officers immediately went to the aid of the child, left alone on the motorway, while the father pulled off in the direction of the town of Peligros. as well as Lourenza. The resident who photographed the two wolves contacted the Guardia Civil, which together with other authorities, will try to locate them. They have reminded the public that these are
wild animals who, among others, are venturing into more urban areas as there are ‘fewer humans to flee from.’ They add that ‘caution is recommended’ should anybody come across them.

Surprise find A SUPERMARKET shopper in Avila got a huge surprise on Monday when they found an abandoned newborn baby in a trolley. The baby boy, which is no more than a couple of days old, had been wrapped up in a sheet and placed inside a shopping bag, then left in a trolley in the supermarket car-park. A woman overheard the little one’s cries and alerted the staff, who in turn called the emergency services. The baby has now been checked out by paediatricians at a local hospital and National Police posted on Twitter that the baby is in good health. Also, that they have opened an investigation to get to the bottom of the matter.

HOME WITH FAMILY: Chloe, 22 months old, has had a successful heart transplant during pandemic. A TODDLER returned home with a healthy new heart last week. Chloe, 22 months old, was admitted to the Gregorio Marañón Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on December 9, before coronavirus had consumed hospital resources, and now, months later she is back with her family in the town of Pinto. Chloe’s heart transplant is one of 65 organ transplants performed in hospitals in the Community of Madrid since the State of Alarm was declared.
From a ward at the Gregorio Marañón ICU, where Chloe has been since December, her mother told El Mundo she had seen first hand how the coronavirus evolved ‘practically overnight.’ Aside from complications from the transplant itself, she admitted she feared the virus ‘very much’ adding: “We’ve been through a lot of fear. When the new heart arrived from Barcelona, they tested it... otherwise it wouldn’t have been possible.”

A WOMAN was found stabbed to death at her home in Madrid at the weekend and police have arrested her son in connection with her murder. SUMMA 112 mobile ICU arrived at the scene on Saturday April 25 just after 7pm, but were unable to save the victim, who had been stabbed ‘at least five times.’

This will apply to those who are unemployed, in an ERTE, etc and are in a situation of vulnerability subject to the following: - The family unit must not have a joint income higher than €1,613.52, or higher depending on the number of children. - The rental income plus basic expenses (water, electricity, telephone, etc) must be at least 35 per
cent of the net income received by all the members of the family unit. - In addition, the tenant may not be the owner or have the use of another home in Spain. In addition, an extension is agreed for the habitual residency contract which ends during the State of Alarm and up to two months from its end. EASYJET STRUGGLES BUDGET airline easyJet is facing a warning that it could go bust, as flights to Spain remain grounded. As the budget carrier has no services to offer, the focus for easyJet has switched to a massive battle to oust the company’s chairman John Barton and chief executive Johan Lundgren. The shareholder move is being spearheaded by easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou over the company ordering a new fleet of aircraft from Airbus. The cost of the order is £4.5 billion, and Haji-Ioannou claims that it will bank-
rupt easyJet, especially with what’s happening over the coronavirus crisis. He’s the largest shareholder in the company and the showdown vote will take place at a meeting on May 22. Sir Stelios described the current easyJet bosses as “scoundrels.” Not surprisingly, the company wants shareholders to vote against his resolution, and they said that any changes would be damaging. John Barton said: “This is not in the best interests of the company or its shareholders as a whole.”
Snake wrapped round moped The officers had to call in Catalan government rural agents to deal with the unusual discovery for the Catalan capital. “In the last few days we have seen rare images of animals in the city,” the Mossos d’Esquadra posted on Twitter
alongside a photo of the serpent. Earlier this week residents of the village of Val de Lourenza in Galicia contacted the Guardia Civil to report they had spotted two wolves prowling around deserted streets near their houses.

Residents’ Council forgoes their 2020 Budget BENIDORM’S Consejo Vecinal (Residents Council) asked the town hall to use its €500,000 allocation to alleviate the Covid19 crisis. Initially this half-million was allocated to the 2020 Participatory Budget for projects chosen by Benidorm residents themselves. Instead, the Consejo’s Permanent Committee has written to Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez, asking him to donate this money to the families, businesses and self-employed who
have had to cease trading or working during the present pandemic crisis. Perez thanked the Council for their act of generosity “which does them credit and demonstrates their compassion and commitment towards the local population.” The mayor went on to say that the local government had accepted the Consejo Vecinal’s offer and will use the €500,000 to complement the €4 million fund that has been set up to help the local population ride out the Covid-19 storm.
More parking spaces on Poniente beach A CAR PARK on the Poniente beach frontline will help to solve the area’s parking situation. Located at the lower end
of Avenida Xixo, this unsurfaced plot of land has been used during times of peak occupation but there will now be asphalted
spaces for 200 cars, announced Benidorm’s mayor Toni Perez. The area will soon have an additional 120 parking spaces once the new roads included in the Actuacion Numero 1 Poniente project are opened and connect the Poniente promenade with Via Parque. “Soon we shall be bringing some respite to La Cala’s parking problems, especially near the promenade until the new car park-lookout is completed,” Benidorm mayor Toni Perez said. Perez explained that the town hall was taking advantage of the absence of pedestrians and a significant reduction in the number of vehicles on the roads to carry out work that would have been difficult in pre-lockdown conditions.

Stepping up ALBIR resident Jean Calvert has raised an impressive €3,229 after walking 15,000 steps, which equates to around 12km, without leaving her home on Sunday. Traditionally, the fiestas take place immediately after Easter but rather than hold them later this year, it was decided to postpone the celebrations until 2021. “This is a decision we did not want to take but we must be sensible and responsible about the situation,” said Teulada-Moraira’s Fiestas councillor Aitor Llobell. “This is not a year for fiestas for many reasons, above all health reasons,” he declared. “All resources have to go towards alleviating the health, social and economic crisis that Covid-19 has caused. This means a break with tradition, but it is inevitable.”
TEULADA-MORAIRA will not have to put out to tender the contract for collecting the town’s rubbish and cleaning its streets. Three companies appealed against the town hall’s failure to award a €43.9 million contract to an outside firm and its decision to retain municipally-owned Teumo. The predecessors to the three-party-coalition at the town hall had begun procedures to put the contract out to tender shortly before losing the May 2019 municipal elections. The present town hall voted to save €247,759 by not outsourcing the services provided by Teumo, which then resulted in the appeal to the Contract Appeals Tribunal by the three companies competing for the contact. The Tribunal, which belongs to Spain’s Finance ministry Hacienda, has now rejected the appeal and confirmed the legality of the town hall’s decision.

Information ranges from online training programmes by official bodies and tourism associations to details of help for financial problems caused by Spain’s nationwide lockdown. Given the present volume of information and regulations, Javea’s Tourism department is sifting out and putting online information of real interest to professionals. It will also contact businessowners by post with news and updates of interest. Javea’s Tourism councillor Toni Miragall stressed that tourism professionals have all the town hall’s support at this difficult time and that his department is following the evolution of the situation and health directives in order to offer a safe tourist destination to everybody wanting to visit Javea.

Fatal accident WELCOME HOME: But tragedy unfolds quickly. A COVID-19 patient in Mexico was accidentally shot dead during a celebration to welcome him home after being released from hospital. Friends and family of the victim were so delighted to have the recovered coronavirus patient home; one of them began shooting into the air. But as can be seen
from the video which has gone viral, their joy quickly turns to horror as the tragedy unfolds. The images show two men getting out of a vehicle. One of them shoots in the air again and again, and then appears to have problems firing the gun. As the victim carries his bag of personal belongings towards his
home to be welcomed by family members, neighbours and friends, he is fatally struck in the head by a bullet and falls to the floor. Relatives try to help the victim, while the shooter appears to be frozen. According to local press reports, nothing could be done to save the man’s life.

Therefore, I have made myself more available to help people, and provide resources where they can go to get help.” When isolation is over what do you plan to do? “As a survivor of domestic violence, I know how important it is to not feel alone when you have experienced abuse, so I will continue to provide that safe emotional place for anyone who needs it.”

HOLLIE NEWELL moved to Turre when she was just 18 and qualified as a Zumba teacher a year later. Hollie, who has a dance and fitness background, points out that “our bodies aren’t on lockdown, so we can still keep ourselves fit during quarantine. “It’s hard not having a normal everyday routine,” Hollie admits, “but some way we have to make the most of it. “Always try to find the positive in every-
thing.” Thanks to social media Hollie is able to share her love of movement and exercise with others. “I have been recording Zumba videos for people to work out at home whenever they like: no obligations, nice, casual and fun. “The aim is to keep the body and mind working while we are not allowed out.”

MARIA WILSON is a passionate fundraiser for local cancer charities through her group Maria and the Pink Ladies. As a cancer survivor herself, Maria has been in the vanguard to get people to take up early cancer screening tests, which is also promoted through her involvement in the AACC charity based in Playa Flamenca. Maria says on Facebook: “One thing this whole Covid-19 situation has taught me is that we have one life to live. This is not a practice run for the future, this is it! The material things we invest in, are left behind only to be discarded.” She added that she’s enjoying spending more time with her husband Carl, as their busy commitments meant that going on holiday was the best way to fully concentrate on each other.

It told shareholders only that it was ineligible but declined to explain why, although it also advised that it has settled a €674 million dispute with the Belgian tax authority appar ently making a modest payment on ly. A SPANISH nonexecutive director of the Bank of East Asia (BEA), Isidro Fainé Casas, has resigned from his position due to the coronavirus pan demic and the distance between Spain and Hong Kong. He is the chairman of the board of trustees of the Caixa d’Estalvis i Pen sions de Barcelona ‘la Caixa’ Banking Foundation, a company shareholder. Sr Fainé explained that it has be come increasingly difficult to devote the time and effort necessary amid the current situation, but the bank has engaged him as a special advisor.

Yes, they will. The validity of Spanish YOU AND THE driving permits LAW IN SPAIN that expire during the State of Alarm has been extended through the State of Alarm and for 60 days after the lockdown ends. This means that, if the lockdown is extended into May or even until June, you will have 60 days from the end of the period to renew your driving licence. This comes as part of a relief package passed by the government that includes extension for vehicle inspections, visas for for eigners, mortgage extensions and foreclosures, rental contracts, and many other administrative deadlines. Even so, it is wise to check on these measures regularly because they are modified from time to time.

Dyson order cancelled WHEN it was announced that James Dyson had been asked by Prime Minister Boris Johnson to produce 10,000 ventilators for the NHS there were numerous accusations of nepotism. BUSINESS EXTRA UK bailout TATA STEEL which employs 12,000 people in the UK has appealed for a £500 million (€575 million) bailout from the British government so that it can stay in business. The matter is under consideration by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Spain’s budget DESPITE all of the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus Covid19 pandemic, the European Union still requires member states to submit their annual budgets for review. The Spanish government has done this and is looking for a lenient view from Brussels.

GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY I REMEMBER a time when social media was a bit of fun. Even if I was taking a few days in the country, away from it all, Facebook still made me feel good. Looking at others posting their smiling photos, made me smile. It wasn’t so long ago, that people posted happy photos of them lunching with friends at beach clubs, or dancing at glamorous events. These days, my feed is filled with angry posts from people who are clearly struggling with being trapped at home. People I had assumed were light-hearted, and above resorting to online arguments over who claims to know more about Covid-19, politics, or religion. It’s as if suddenly, everyone is an expert on all things Chinese, having sourced their knowledge on Wikipedia. I drew the line and ended the call, when one FaceTime caller told me that my beloved Jack Russell, Henry, would be seen as a canapé in China. It’s as if ‘wine-o’clock’ starts earlier each day, and the rants too. Normal people, shouting at their phones, in an argument with themselves, as nobody really cares about what you’re saying. At numerous points during the week, I was almost ready to hit delete profile, just to escape. On the subject of escape, I stare at my diary, filled with endless cancelled plans. Cannes Film Festival - No. Monaco Grand Prix - No. Royal Ascot - No. The list of my usual summer, goes on, and each event has a red line through
BASE CAMP: Today my bed is my world. it. Over the years, these dates have given some structure, to a season otherwise filled with little more than the beach. Luckily, my house is right on the beach, so I won’t have far to go this year. Summer 2020 will be a very localised situation. As the week rolled on, I found myself setting up base camp from my bed. It’s as if everything I need is now located by my bed. If I’m downstairs and can’t find my, phone, glasses, diary, lighter, dog... chances are they’re at, or in my bed. I had to conduct a conference call on Thursday afternoon, and of course as the stressful work call went on, I found myself saying things like “I won’t leave my desk until we find a solution.” Leave my desk? I hadn’t even got any trousers on. I was in bed! I now rise early, swim, work out, make coffee and it’s back to bed. Some days, when I feel like it, I even take lunch in bed. I binge watch Netflix in bed. I write newspaper articles in bed. Bed is now Caput Mundi, and just like Marco Anneo Lucano who claimed it to be Rome in 61AD, for me, bed is now my great empire, from which I oversee work, banking, dining, and the greatest lockdown past time of all, sleep. Over the coming days, before getting into a heated row on Facebook, with people who don’t deserve your time, stop. Ask yourself, is there something else I could be doing? Read a book, tend to the garden, clean your pool. Anything is better than bad energy. Stay safe / stay sane x

BARRY DUKE WHEN I first became aware of the hatred unleashed against China by America’s imbecile of a President my immediate thought was that the vast majority using social media to parrot his demands for a boycott of Chinese products were using phones and computers made or assembled in the very country they want to see punished for the Covid-19 pandemic. Indeed, it’s been reported that the hypocrite Trump has TWO iPhones! I then took stock of all the items I own that are made or assembled in China: my MP3 player, my iPhone, my iPad, my iMac, my Barclays card reader that gives me access to online banking, my vaping machines my … I could carry on all day. If I were to trash them all, I would instantly render myself both joyless and unemployed, for my livelihood depends on affordable top quality communication

Had they done some rudimentary research before venting their hysteria they would have discovered just how dependent we all are on Chi-
nese products and technology. According to a February, 2020, commodity.com report China has been the world’s biggest exporter of goods since 2009. The country overtook the US in 2013 as the largest trading nation in the world. Apart from computers and smartphones, the products we get from China include tea, rice, potatoes, cotton, furniture, knitted clothing, vehicles, medical apparatus and footwear. Calls to boycott Chinese prod-
ucts aren’t confined to Europe and America. India, for example, has also seen a steep rise in antiChinese sentiment. This in a country which is one of the world’s biggest importers of Chinese goods. It is also reliant on China for meeting its solar equipment demand. In 2018-19, China exported well above 60 per cent of electronic products and components and over 80 per cent of antibiotics to India. And in Japan over 90 per

cent of the coffins sold come from China. While boycott calls are just plain dumb given that there are so few alternatives, demands that people should spurn Chinese shops and restaurants are nothing short of despicable. Chinese business owners and their families are suffering as much as everyone else affected by the pandemic - if not more so. Media reports say that Chinese districts are being given a wide berth, and racism is surfacing all over the globe. Here’s just one example: an ice cream shop in Rome taped a sign to its door in English and Chinese that said ‘due to international safety measures all people coming from China are not allowed access to this place.’ Let me make one thing crystal clear. I think China’s record on human rights stinks, but my real contempt is reserved for companies, seeking ever bigger profits, that have transferred the manufacture of their products to a country infamous for cheap labour and deplorable working conditions. But hey folks, that’s capitalism for you.

A CAFFEINE DREAM DEAR Euro Weekly, Thanks for keeping me going. I can’t wait to get back outside, I am genuinely missing random human contact. Before the lockdown I would be moaning about too many people in the street, the Spaniards congregating in the middle of small pavements for a family chat, nobody covering the tills on Mercadona when it’s busy, you know the regular moany old man stuff. Now I just can’t wait to see people in the street, children playing in the parks again, angry rushes along the high street to get home to my dog after work. It’s funny the things you take for granted that you miss. Hopefully, it will continue to make me feel differently. OUR VIEW Wild love FEW are lucky enough to go into the wild these days. Under lockdown, our horizons have shrunk. Beloved nature reserves and glorious national parks must wait until the quarantine is lifted. Yet it seems the wild is coming to us. In Barcelona, a snake is wrapped around a parked motorbike engine. In Puerto Banus, dolphins swim among the boats in the port. In Alhaurin, even wolves have been spotted and large jellyfish float through Venice’s now clear canals. Animals are moving into the spaces that humans have vacated, and we are unusually receptive to their arrival. When days seem so indistinct, the appearance of a new bird outside the window suddenly seizes our attention. Birdsong is clearer now that the traffic has hushed. With quieter roads, the death toll of furry creatures is guaranteed to fall. Grass verges, left uncut, will provide a home for wildflowers and a breeding ground for bugs and insects. Heavy machinery is parked up, leaving nests undisturbed. Animal appearances seem to bring such joy to human hearts that some tales of returning wildlife have been exaggerated or confected. However, much work to protect wildlife has slowed or stopped due to social distancing measures, and the dog shelters and horse sanctuaries, often strapped for cash, are under increased pressure. In developing countries, the absence of tourism and monitoring groups may give free rein to poachers who will see no more need to obey quarantine rules. People already living close to the edge may be forced to exploit nature to survive as their work disappears. When the pandemic is finally over, wildlife may vanish as fast as it emerged, we may not really notice so we should enjoy it while we can.

I’ve never responded to any article in any media even though I’ve become increasingly infuriated by the sensationalism, fake news, hysteria, and unbalanced minority driven reporting by so many mainstream journalists in the last three years. But the above article did it for me, so I’m addressing my concerns to yourself as one of the only sane voices in an increasingly insane media, maybe you could spread some sanity. When we embed the media in a military conflict it places risk and burden on the units and soldiers involved, but it’s justified as it’s essential for the public to know what is happening on the front line and for the military to know the public understands their role and hardship. Covid-19 is a war and no different, when we emerge from the far side of this crisis the authorities and the public will be desperate to analyse and learn from every aspect of what happened. The health service will be desperate to show the world the warlike conditions they worked under, the hardships they faced, and the superhuman effort it took from everyone to manage an impossible situation and save lives. Ross Kemp is a world-class investigative journalist and we should be applauding his efforts to report on the crisis. To have no insight at the end of the crisis would be a travesty. Regards Pete D

ALTERNATIVE STEPS: Over the counter options come with some side effects. THE onset of spring means the beginning of the dreaded hay fever season, bringing symptoms including watery eyes, an itchy throat and frequent sneezing. Whilst over the counter medicines often help to reduce symptoms, alternative steps can also be taken for more natural relief. Here are some options: 1. Quercetin Quercetin can help to reduce inflammation and inhibits the release of histamine, stopping the reaction in its tracks. To up the quercetin in your diet, opt

for foods including berries, parsley, onions, and peppers. 2. Biotin Biotin is a B vitamin which helps maintain the healthy function of mucous membranes. Try consuming more fish, egg yolks, avocados, green leafy vegetables and nuts to get your recommended dose. 3. Herbal teas Green tea, chamomile, elderflower, ginger, peppermint and anise limit the effects of hay fever. They will also help to keep you hydrated. 4. Probiotics Healthy gut flora is essen-
tial for a strong immune system. Contactless Hay fever sufferers who wear contact lenses may notice the vision through their lenses can appear smeary and eyes can generally feel uncomfortable which can be calmed down with contact lensfriendly eye drops. Wearing prescription glasses can prevent pollen from getting into your eyes.
INTRUSIVE thoughts are thoughts that pop in to your head which are beyond your control and can become obsessive. They are thoughts that you do not want, and obsessions that you certainly would rather not have! It is something I have learned to deal with over the years, it can be anything from an unwanted image or a scenario that plays in your mind that can cause so much upset and can be very hard to manage or eliminate. The hardest one I feel like I have had to deal with to date is ‘losing the closest person to me,’ it’s a thought that creeps in, can be very graphic and very upsetting. It can pop up out of nowhere. I haven’t found a way to get rid intrusive thoughts, however there are ways I have been shown through therapy to cope with the unwanted thoughts: 1) You need to recognise if the thought is truly intrusive. Are you obsessing over something you don’t want to? Is the thought popping up
at times when it doesn’t make any sense? Is it upsetting you? 2) Acknowledge these thoughts when they happen. Tell yourself it is your mind producing these thoughts and try to distract yourself. 3) Take a deep breath. If you practise meditation, this a brilliant time to take 10 minutes out to practise it. Give yourself time. 4) Don’t judge your thoughts. Understand that these thoughts are part of your illness, so there isn’t any need to feel guilty, they aren’t wanted thoughts! 5) Try and replace the thought. This is the tricky part, try and think of a ‘happy’ or ‘positive’ thought. It’s easier said than done! But remember that these thoughts are created in your mind, they are not truly what you think or are not truly a part of you. Intrusive thoughts can happen to everyone. It’s how you cope with them that defines how much they’ll rule your life. In the end, it’s absolutely crucial that you work with a professional to find out how to help you cope with intrusive thoughts if you are finding it is having a negative affect on your day to day life. DIONE LOCKYER IT’S not enough that we are in lockdown, but now us mums have to be teachers too! I hear you mumma’s. The first day, I was completely organised. The alarm was set, the laptop and books were neatly on the table, the timetable was neatly written using different colours, and everything was going to be fine. My son woke up on time, sat at the table, completed his work with only a few questions he needed help with and before i knew it, the day was complete! Wow! I can really do this, home schooling is a doddle, or so I thought!!! Fast forward to the end of the first week and things weren’t so dandy. My son was less motivated, the snooze button was pressed, the work got harder and OH MY GOD

HOME SCHOOLING: Take it one day at a time. WHERE’S THE WINE!!! We had arguments, we had strops, we had complete meltdowns. What the hell am I doing, I’m no teacher, i hated algebra when i was at school
so how on earth can I teach it to my son? I’m not even fluent in Spanish, he attends a Spanish school I don’t understand, I can’t, i cant... I JUST CANT!!! The tears started to roll, i felt
as if i was failing as a parent, was my son going to be left behind? Was my son going to struggle when the schools reopen? Then it hit me, like a saucepan to the face Mums, WE ARE NOT TRAINED TEACHERS! We haven’t been to college or university to study how to teach our kids so why on earth are we putting so much pressure on ourselves? Secondly, this is new to our children too! They’re not used to the situation we are in, they look at their homes as a place to feel safe, a place to have fun, a place of calm. They have spent six long weeks stuck at home with a mum or dad who picks up the wine every time they hear the words... SCHOOL WORK. Give them and yourselves a break! Take it one day at a time. Whether your child completes
five hours or one hour’s worth of work, celebrate it. If your child is feeling overwhelmed and simply cannot face a day of home schooling, teach them something fun. Teach them life skills. Cooking, reading, home exercise, anything to put a smile on their beautiful faces. The reality is, the lack of workload will not affect their adult life, it will not stop them from getting their dream job. It will not stop them from living a successful life. They will catch up, they will succeed, they will be happy! The lockdown and pandemic will be talked about for years; don’t let your children or yourself look back on it with dread, hurt or frustration. Create wonderful memories and look back on this moment with nothing but love and a smile. I raise a glass to all parents. We’ve got this!

BIRTHDAY CARDS: From across the UK. CAPTAIN Tom Moore has received 120,000 birthday cards wishing him well and thanking him for his incredible fundraising feat. The Second World War veteran has turned down offers of gifts and instead asked for them to go to coronavirus sufferers. Tom set out to raise £1,000 for NHS Communities by doing laps of his garden before his 100th birthday April 30. After passing that target in less than 24 hours, donations continued to pour in with support. Tom captured the country’s hearts and Brits decided to send off birthday cards. Now Bedford School, near the veteran’s home, has filled its school
hall with thousands of cards from across the country. A special telegram message from the Queen is planned for his birthday on Thursday. The aerial flypast with a Spitfire salute which had been organised to mark Captain Tom Moore’s 100th birthday has been cancelled over fears it will attract crowds amid the coronavirus lockdown. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were among the voices praising Cpt Moore for his incredible fundraiser, with Prince William hailing the Second World War veteran as a ‘one-man fundraising machine.’
HOLLYWOOD star and allround good guy Tom Hanks has sent a touching letter and a very meaningful gift to a young Australian lad, who wrote to tell him he was being bullied because of his name - Corona. Eight-year-old Gold Coast schoolboy Corona De Vries penned a letter to the actor after he and his wife Rita Wilson both went down with Covid-19 while in Queensland and spent several weeks recovering in hospital. Corona asked if the couple were OK and told the Oscar winner he liked his name, but that kids at his school were calling him “coronavirus” and it made him feel “sad and angry.” Hanks replied with a letter beginning “Dear Friend Corona” and words of encouragement he bashed
out on a typewriter. “Your letter made my wife and I feel so wonderful! Thank you for being such a good friend - friends make friends feel good when they are down,” he told him. “You know, you are the only person I’ve ever known to have the name Corona - like the ring around the sun, a crown,” he added. “You’ve got a friend in me!” Hanks hand wrote at the end in a reference to his role as Woody in the Toy Story films. The star also sent the lad a Corona-branded typewriter he had used during his quarantine in Australia, saying: “I thought this typewriter would suit you. “Ask a grown-up how it works. And use it to write me back.”
